Preferred Solution: R50e-How can i boot or install operating software by using external hard disk or cd/dvd ram?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: R50e-How can i boot or install operating software by using external hard disk or cd/dvd ram?

sohailkm, welcome to the forum,

you can normally reinstall by pressing the blue Access IBM at start up button which will then boot into the hidden partition allowing a recovery to factory settings.
If this no longer works you can use the internal cd/dvd drive or external drives; in this case you will need to change the boot order in BIOS by pressing F1 when starting and select the Start Up menu.

I turned on my computer and got this message '"boot device not found please install an operating system on your hard drive."'.... Please can someone tell me what to do?

Answer:how to install an operating system on my hard disk

The message that you are receiving means that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to buy a new one.  You should buy one the same size or larger than the one being replaced to assure that the Recovery media works with it. For future reference, when requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

That means the hard drive has failed.  Replace the hard drive and then reinstall Windows.  If it was me, I would install Windows 10.  I really dislike Windows 8 or 8.1.  It might mean you need to purchase Windows 10, however.

jeanieq88 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about multiple problems with your laptop and wanted to help -- but need more information. Without your detailed product number, I can not confirm whether or not HP has Win10 drivers for your PC, so please follow the directions in this link to find the detailed product number of your PC: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0001If that is not possible, then look for a sticker on the PC that includes the product number and post that here.  If the battery is removable, the sticker is likely to be in the battery compartment. Also, need to know what Windows version your PC is running. We need that information because troubleshooting steps are different for the various Windows OSs.Here is a link on how to find that info:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/which-operating-systemIF it's running Win10, did it come with that preinstalled? If not, what was the prior OS of the PC? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Answer:Using an external hard drive to boot a different operating system?

Hello.

I don't mean to put a wet blanket on your idea, but most would say no...can't boot from an external hard drive. However...hope runs eternal...check the guides forum and you will see there are some who say, "yes you can." Unfortunately I can't remember the different authors names, but one specifically said he couldn't get a specific hard drive to run only on the original computer, as the original topic of one guide, but he tried a different means and got it to boot....on most computers, not just the original.
I'm trying to do something very similar to your idea, unfortunately I'm not well versed in DOS and boot systems so it is slow going for me.

I've installed the Windows 7 RTM but cannot boot without the DVD in the drive. I even deleted the partition, created and formated and then reinstalled.

I've tried making Disk 0 the first boot device in the bios and I've tried running:

Bootrec /FixMBR
Bootrec /FixBoot

from the command prompt in the Repair Computer option of the Windows 7 dvd.

I got the same issue when I put the RC on the system but was sure it would be fixed after I deleted the partition and started over. Any help is appreciated.

I have installed Windows 7 RTM after deleting the existing partition, creating and formatting the drive. I had this issue after installing the RC over Windows XP (not dual boot) but thought I would correct it by deleting the partition on the final release install... but no love...

I've tried changing DISK0 to the first boot device and have tried running these commands from the Command Prompt off the DVD

Bootrec /FixMBR
Bootrec /FixBoot

If I leave the DVD in the drive and don't press anything, it does boot from the harddrive.

Any help is appreciated.

Try installing Grub. If configured properly, it should automatically detect your Windows installation and add it to the boot menu. I don't have any tutorials on it, but it shouldn't be too hard to Google for some help.

I thought I had the operating system disk to install in a new partition and began the partitioning process and reboot to find out I don't have the disk.  Now I am stuck at the dos prompts without a boot disk.  Can someone help me find how I can get a boot disk to install XP home? As an alternative, if I can't get a boot disk, how do I get the system to boot to the original partition/OS? I do not have any recovery points for the rescue and recovery option either. Suggestions?

Answer:Re-install operating system XP Home boot disk

What model desktop is it? Only place I know of to get a install disc would be to search retailers and see if one has any left.  Otherwise I cant suggest anything that wouldnt violate a microsoft license. as far as the original OS is concerned you should be able to re-install from the recovery system (tap F2 during boot for desktop, "NOVO" or orange arrow button while computer is off for lapops), but only if the partitions are still in the default configuration. Also, Warranty support might be able to provide the original OS discs.

I want to buy a 2.5 external hard disk that do not require any external power.

1. I am considering WD my passport 2TB or 3TB. Is 3TB the biggest size for a 2.5 external hard disk?

2. Do WD sell 2.5 external hard disk without any software bundled in it?

3. I am looking at WD my passport and I saw it has lots of software (VCD, WD SmartWare...) that is bundled into the disk that cannot be removed (see links below), is it still the case now? How can I remove it?

We want to Remove the VCD from our passports, not ... - WD Community
Remove 'WD SmartWare' from your Western Digital Pa... - WD Community

Thanks

Answer:Remove WD external hard disk bundled software?

Hello pcwin!

1. The size would depend on the model WD My Passport that you'd choose, but for now the WD portable My Passport drives for Windows are up to 3TB, this being the new My Passport Ultra.
2. WD portable drives come with WD backup software (WD Smartware or WD backup) for the customer's ease and backup solutions.
3. If you don't want any of the software that comes with the drive, you are not obliged to use it or even have it. A simple reformatting of the drive should wipe it off and leave it completely empty.

Hope this helps!

I have come across a bit of a problem. This morning I replaced 2 of my case fans as they were getting old and noisy. I booted the pc and It would not boot after stating the processor present. I tried mutiple times cleaned my cpufan etc and tried again. Still failed. After removing everything I booted fine and it turns out my pc wont boot into bios or past the processor information if my external hardisk is turned on. This hardisk is just used for backup/storage so there is not boot info on it. It worked fine before I changed the fans. Once the pc is in windows I can turn the external disk on and it works fine. But the pc wont boot with it on. any ideas or suggestions ?

Answer:Is it possible to boot my Dell through external hard disk

There are a number of BootCDs you could use. A good favorite of many is The Ultimate BootCD

Yes backup to USB flash, then install Xp clean (removing the partition when asked in the initial setup process)

Note, you do not need to create a new partition or even format the drive, as Windows setup will automatically create an NTFS formatted file system, on a non-partitioned drive, during Windows install.

I have a laptop with processor 1.7ghz and 512DDR2 RAM which suitable to install vista. I heard many people said that 512 RAM just only eonugh store vista services.. means that no more available memory to store other third party software services that installed...

I know I can increase my page file but I don want to do that because it will slow down performance.

Is possible install VISTA inside external hard disk? Because I don want install vista inside fixed disk which required reformat disk if vista not suitable for my laptop. Very time consuming to uninstall OS on fixed disk....(Haha I just want to try VISTA only)

Here's my question...

1. If boot from windows Vista DVD, will it able to detect my external hard disk(Is required to change bios settings?)

2. Now if having two OS which XP inside fixed disk and Vista inside external hard disk, How I gonna choose which OS I want to login at the startup?

Answer:Possible? install Windows Vista inside external hard disk?

Answers:

1. That depends on if your bios is capable of booting from a USB device. Read the manufacturer's instructions to see if this is possible.

2. You are probably going to have to choose one or the other by changing the settings in your bios to point one way or another. So each time you reboot, you are going to have to go into your bios and select the bootable device.

Some other observations: I think that the performance that you are going to get is going to be substandard... you already don't have enough memory and the fact that you will be running the OS from the external drive, well, that should slow it down quite a bit as well.

Be sure that if you do go through with this that you don't accidentally wipe out your fixed disk... I have seen this happen a lot with people "trying" Vista.

Hello,

I have been trying unsuccsessfully to boot from an external hard drive. I have a spare HDD with Windows Vista, which I have mounted on an external case. While on start screen, I press F12, I do find the external drive and select it, but while it begins booting it fails after a few seconds, resulting on blue screen. The OS I am using on the internal HDD is Windows 10.

I also tried to swap HDDs and the result was quite the same. While on starting screen with windows 10 logo, after a while, a message is shown which briefly says that 'the system encountered a problem while booting and has to restart".

I came to the conclusion that either the BIOS doesn't support booting fron external HDDs or the USB 2.0 is too slow for running the OS via a USB port...

Any answer or suggestions would be largely appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Hello,

My internal laptop hard drive is a Hitach HTS725050A9A360 and it recently started to get bad sectors. Given that my laptop is under warranty, I decided to ship it to Sony to have it replaced. Problem is, they don't restore data and their service centre is in the US and I am in the UK. So I decided to clone this drive through Norton Ghost 15 to my external 500Gb ST350083 0AS iOmega External USB drive (succesfully) and boot from the external drive until Sony sends a replacement drive.

It can boot, but then restarts shortly after 'Starting Windows' shows up and won't even boot into Safe Mode... so we have two identical installs of W7 on different drives and one fails to boot. Any idea how to get this fixed?

Dmitry

Answer:External Hard Disk Drive won't boot after Ghosting

Hello fatcatsat. Welcome to the Forum.

I have never tried to do what you are doing, but my guess is that Windows is waking up expecting to be in one place and finds itself in another. While installing an OS on an external drive is common, cloning to an external is not the same thing.

You may be able to get it to boot by repairing the MBR on the external's install.

Hi,
Installing a reputable software app failed and now my c drive is read only and although i can use most of my original programs, i cannot change anything, cannot choose a restore point as it say the administrator (me!) has stopped me doing this.
I cannot start my acronis to get my latest backup (on external drive), yet i can access my email and other programs.
The windows system is actually on a small ssd drive for speed although my C drive is on my normal harddisk.
I get the fault code 0x800704b3 when trying to access programs such as Wise 365.
My Hyper drive manager will not work either
I can copy and paste and am copying all of the files in My Documents to an external hard drive (where all my Acronis backups are.
I have a sinking feeling that the only option left to me is a complete reinstall somehow as all the options seem to be blocked to me (Restore, Refresh etc)
Getting C unlocked would be a bonus.
I know it's a long shot, but if anyone can help i would be grateful.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Install XP Pro on External USB Hard Drive & Boot

It can't be done. The reason for this is that windows loads its own USB driver, and so it has to take the USB offline while it loads it, and so it will stop when it gets to that point.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and not sure where the best place to ask this question is, any help would be appreciated, even if you refer me to somewhere else.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (2.5 years old). All my data is backed up so I have no concerns about recoverying data.
First, the laptop crashed and ran several chkdsk on start up. I froze several times during this. It said it had fixed some errors then started up again.
This time it wanted to do start up repair. Same thing kept happening, froze at least twenty times during this. Eventually it gave me the blue screen of death.

This repeated several times. I ran the diagnostics and it told me the hard drive could not be found (error code 0146, 2000-0146). Essentially, it's a Dell laptop (I know) and I am not bothered about recovering the hard drive.
I would, however, like to install Windows 7, or alternatively Linux, onto my external hard drive. But I just can't seem to get it to work.
I have extracted a Linux iso to the external hard drive I want to install on, onto a cd, onto a FAT32 8gb usb stick, but it has given me the bootmgr is missing error every time. I have tried it with the interal HDD in and removed.

As a temporary work-around, you should be able to run Linux from the CD or USB.
This would allow you to use your machine until a better solution is suggested.

If you can get Linux to run you might be able to format the internal HDD (using GParted for example) and then reuse it (temporary solution).

I could access BIOS setup and I can boot only some DOS emergency boot CD allowing me to copy or erase whole disc, but I couldn't reinstall OS.
Laptop was sent to service and had motherboard and bluetooth replaced.
Came back yesterday had win 7 installed. Everything was fine till I installed Nokia Ovi and tried to use Bluetooth. Then the same hapenned - first USB unknown device than no boot at all. I am desperate - I dont believe this is hardware (2 mobos?) but I can't access the machine at all. If this was software it should boot from Win 7 DVD - but it hangs displaying 'starting windows'. Well it has been a fun couple of days!

Trying to restore a mistake on my Windows 7 ultimate x64 hard drive that Ubuntu started to overwrite.

So far I have
1. Backed-up / Copied all my files so whatever is done to this HD is ok.
2. Restored the partitions
3. Tried FixMBR / FixBoot / Chkdsk / Rebuildbcd

In the recovery console it sees my OS just fine

But when I boot my Dell XPS desktop after post it says 'Disk Read Error' press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

I don't think it has anything to do with the bios - I've put the hard drive in another dell and it did the same thing (tried different Sata cables too).

I think there is a peice I'm missing somewhere with these partitions (see attached). I currently have my non-booting drive in another dell and you can see it as Disk 1 in the screen shot.

Any suggestions for getting this thing back to booting? I can access all the files from it fine when I have on this computer (as the 2nd hdd) which leads me to believe there is just a boot issue somewhere.

Can I repair install Windows 7 on this hd even though it is the 2nd hard drive on the computer?

I'm trying to avoiding a wipe and reinstalling all the programs so I'm hoping I can somehow fix this last peice.

Your help is greatly appreciated - thank you!

Does anyone know of software that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives  to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great Ojas

Answer:Any software that will clone one external hard drive to another external hard

What kind of data is on the HDD ? ?Are you saying that Aceonis does not rcognise both externals ? ?If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...unhook that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.NOTE: I highly suggest verifying the image before cloning...takes a bit longer buy well worth it.It's under the Tools section in Acronis.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

Maybe I should also mention that I have been able to my USB flash drive to load DOS onto the netbook.

Answer:External Hard Drive operating system

This is a tough task at best. Windows does not like to be installed to a external device at all. Vista and Win7 can't be. This feature is removed and you must modify the install to even get it to install to external media.

XP can do it but at best you are talking a 1 in 1,000 shot when you boot. As Windows reassigns the external device a new ID every boot and could cause the boot information to not work properly. Which would mean trouble shooting the boot information if Windows does not boot.

Your best option, would be to use a BartPE or Linux LiveCD or even install Linux to the External media. As Linux doesnt have those issues like Windows does.

need to copy install cd to hard drive then boot to it to install operating system.

Answer:i have no access to external drives to install operating sys

I guess it could be done. I never tried it.You need some way to boot the system. Then copy the PE files to the hard drive on a small partition. Add in the rest of the disk to another small partition or maybe the same. You'd have to make a boot loader see the PE at boot. See how to make a windows 7 usb and use those tools to put the data to the hard drive. I'd also consider borrowing a usb dvd drive or even buy a $4 usb flash to make your install flash drive. Worse case is to pxe boot to a networked install. Katy Perry, I'd never treat you badly.

Hi,

I have a hard drive I recovered from my old Dell laptop when the motherboard gave out. Originally, I just put it in an external hard case and have been using it as external storage. Now it is getting filled up, so I would like to reformat it to remove the OS partition (Vista) to give me access to the entire drive. I have removed and baked up all my files, but cannot find a way to repartition the drive to remove the OS volume. Disk manager will not let me access that volume to delete it - nor will diskpart. In fact, only the non-OS volume even shows up with a drive letter in diskpart.

I would really appreciate some help. I have searched the web but have only been able to find info on how to reformat the main hard drive...and this is definitely NOT what I want to do.

Thanks

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

I got a new laptop a few hours ago and this is all I've done with it since then:

1) Made back up disks
2) Installed Firefox
3) Installed Adblock
4) Installed avast anti-virus free
5) Restarted
6) Messed around on facebook and checked my e-mail
7) Played solitaire/hearts
8) Uninstalled Norton internet security 2009 using control panel (I know it doesn't delete everything)
9) Restarted computer
10) Played Solitaire

Five minutes after playing solitaire it froze and a black screen came up saying boot 030 'please install operating system'. I did a diagnostic on start-up and run-in, both turned out fine. When I ran a diagnostic on the hard disk it said there was no hard disk detected. I didn't know what else to do so I restarted it. Everything restarted fine, I logged in and went to the internet to see if I could find out what had happened. Five minutes in same thing happened. I restarted again and checked avast. It said that my antivirus software was out of date so I tried updating but it didn't want to update, said that the package was broken. It was suggested that avast was the problem so I uninstalled and restarted, same problem.

I'm currently at a loss on what else to do short of using my back up disks to restore my laptop.

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I'm completely oblivious to the inner workings of computers whether it be hardware or software so try to explain as if you're talking to a small child, thanks ^_^

Answer:Multiple operating systems (install Vista on an external drive?)

Hi-

Well that depends if you have the Windows Vista installation disk. So, do you have the Vista Install disk?

You also could try to clone (copy) vista over to the new drive, but any problems would go along with it.

If you would like, you could partition the internal drive and have Vista and Linux be on the same drive. (you could chose which OS on boot up).

So just let me know what you want to do, then we can go from there.

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

I have written this thread originally in JustLinux Forum. In view of the fact that it may be useful to MS Windows users I have re-written it to suit the non-Linux users. The method can be used on a healthy system or just to salvage data off an unbootable system.

Summary

Step 1 – use Linux dd commands to clone the original disk to the new bigger hard disk (only two terminal commands and one of which is optional)
Step 2 – use Gparted or Parted Magic to resize the partitions to absorb the extra space (Optional if you want to use up the spare space in the larger hard disk)

Theoretical consideration (User not interested in the theory can skip the black section and go straight to the blue text

With hard disks getting bigger in capacity and selling cheaper per Gb many PC users can now afford to upgrade the hard disk to a bigger unit. Migrating an operating system to a different hard disk can be hazardous because the integrity of the filing system and the boot loader may be affected in the new home. However if the basic rules are adhered to then the migration can be effortless.

This thread is written to show how to use a Linux Live CD, of either Gparted or Parted Magic, to clone from a smaller source disk into a bigger target disk. Both Gparted or Parted Magic are now available as free downloadable bootable iso images. Just download any one of them, burn the iso into a bootable CD and yo... Read more

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

I have a Lenovo R61 with a Windows XP operating system.

So this is what has happened so far:

I was working on my computer when I noticed that I was suddenly getting continuous popups. Realizing that I had either spyware or a virus, I tried loading my McAfee and Spybot applications. For some reason, they were not loading, and then I noticed that I suddenly had porn thumbnails being downloaded onto my desktop. I quickly used my external hard drive and saved my pictures and documents. Then, I tried to restart my computer. I've been trying everything I know to get my computer back, but I keep getting blocked at every turn.

When I try to restart my computer, it goes to the windows login screen, which it used to always bypass. When I press enter without inputting a password, it states that I am "logging in" and then immediately changes to "logging off" and forces my computer to restart.

When I try to load in safe mode, it scrolls through a few pages of script and then errors on me and says that I cannot go into safe mode.

I changed my boot device to boot from my cd drive in order to reformat using a legal Windows XP cd. When I try this, it tells me that my hard disk drives are undetected.

When I try to do a full recovery through Thinkvantage's recovery program, it says that it cannot be done.

I have run diagnostics on my hard drive, and now I am doing the same through BIOS. So far, it seems unaffected.

I took my computer to an IT person a... Read more

It should have about 465GB, what are you seeing?

You will not have 500GB due to the conversion between binary and decimal for reporting sizes.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

Hi,
I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on to a dell xps and having a lot of problems.
The Computer has 3 harddisks
C:\ - Vista (Came preloaded With the Pc when i bought it)
D:\ Vista Recovery 10GB thing (Came preloaded With the Pc when i bought it)
F:\ Empty drive i want to install windows 7 on
J:\ Harddrive for everything else

The problem is when i boot from the disk i can start the installer but when it allows me to choose where to install to the harddrive always comes up as "Can not install blah blah, Windows can NOT boot from this Disk"

I have tried all sorts of ways to get around this like unplugging everything apart from the cd drive and harddrive i want to install it on, im getting really fed up with this. Is the problem that im trying to do a dual boot?
I also read somewhere about getting sata drivers for my motherboard but after hours of searching the web gave up.

All i can tell that my motherboard is is a FOXCONN LS36 but i can't find sata drivers for this anywhere!
On the dell website i tried all of the Sata downloads but if i locate the downloaded file whilst in win7 setup it doesn't like the file.
Am i doing some majorly wrong and stupid here?
Please help me!!!

Well, I hope this is the correct forum considering I don't actually have XP Pro installed yet!

Many moons ago (June 2004) I purchased a Dell Inspiron 8600 to take to college. It served faithfully (including after The Great Red Bull Spill of 2006) until several weeks ago when the hard drive failed. No big deal, it's mainly my Netflix computer anyway. However, I'd still like to have it back up and running, so I purchased a refurbished 40gb hard drive off Ebay. I installed the new hard drive and checked to see that it was recognized by the BIOS (it is). When I booted up the computer it said "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." Of course, I understand that's normal because the hard drive doesn't have anything on it yet.

Here's where the problems begin.

I have the Dell-issue XP Pro installation CD. I changed the boot order in the BIOS so that it would first boot from the CD drive. However, I got the same "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" error. Well, that CD drive has a history of acting up (despite being recognized by the BIOS), so I went out and got a USB CD drive (the kind with two USB plugs; one is for extra power I guess). Again, I changed the boot order in the BIOS to start with USB. I got the same "No boot sector on hard disk. No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup ut... Read more

Hey all,

I just bought and installed a 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS hard drive in addition to my existing hard drive. It was not detected by Windows XP, although the serial number ST32000542AS showed up in BIOS.

I noticed that for a split second as i started up, there was a screen with the word "RAID" and instructions saying "press ctrl + I", so i restarted, pressed "ctrl + I" and it took to me to something that said it was for the setup of a raid disk (or something like that).

I thought, "Oh, this must be where you format the new hard drive so that it will be recognised."

So i went through a very simple menu that had me select stripe size and some other features that looked very basic an un-threatening, and then finished the RAID setup thing.

I restarted the computer, and now it says:

DISK BOOT FAILURE; INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

At that point i had a heart attack. Can anybody help me? I have no idea what is going on.

Answer:Attempted to install 2nd hard drive; ended up with "DISK BOOT FAILURE"

Hello folks,  I have a few questions regarding using an external monitor and keyboard with my thinkpad R50e  1a   I have a THinkpad R50e Machine and I want to use it has my main PC and as a standard laptop. I want to connect a 21" dell external monitor to it and type on it using a PC sized keyboard. Can I do this? I connect my Dell monitor to the Thinkpad - but no image appeared on the dell monitor. I tried add hardware in windows XP to add the monitor, but this did not work either - still no image. How do I fix this? 1b. I do not have a driver for the dell monitor and can seem to track one down on either the Dell website or the internet - Do I need one to get the monitor to work with my Laptop? The monitor is as follows: 21 inch CRT Dell Ultrascan 1600HS Series, Model D1626HT monitor. - Any help advice would be appreciated.    2. If I connect a USB external keyboard to my Thinkpad - will it be picked up and be usable automatically - will the laptop know that I want to use the external keyboard instead of the laptop keyboard - or do I need to do anything else for it to work.    Regards and Thanks,  Looking forward to hearing from you all. Gordon

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

**********
Formatting USB external hard disk
**********
Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

**********
Case A: Multi-transfer causes system crashes?
**********
The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.
Hard drive crashed - the beginning of the nightmare!
Windows restarted. Chkdsk was running. Saw many lines of messages with:

Question: R50e Windows Disk

Symantec appear to have messed up my R50e by removing some registry files. As of now, I can't get past the welcome page. I've been advised to re-install Windows but can't find or recall ever having a Windows disk. Should there have been one when I purchased the laptop or do I need to request it?

Answer:R50e Windows Disk

Earl, welcome to the forum, after making sure that you have backed up all your important files you should be able to recover your system to factory setting by pressing the Access IBM button or F11 at boot. There were no cds included with your system.

Question: R50e max disk size

I want to upgrade my hard disk and would like to use a Western Digital Scorpio 250Gb device. It spec is 5400rpm, ATA-100 so I guess it would be OK, but someone has suggested that there may be a problem with the BIOS on my R50e that will prevent me using this device. Anyone know the definitive answer to this?

Dear all,

I am encountering the following problem and would very much appreciate your help with it: I am using an somewhat dated IBM ThinkPad (R50e), which I'd like to run with an external monitor.

Now, I have connected the monitor (Fujitsu Siemens Scenicview A19-3A) to the external monitor connector using a DVI - VGA/SVGA/XVGA monitor adapter. I have then switched the display output location to "LCD & external (CRT) monitor" using the Fn+F7 key combination, but the external monitor seems not to receive a signal (at least none that he'd be willing to transform into some type of display) -- it remains all black.

I also installed the monitor device drivers from Fujitsu on my laptop, but to no avail.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be and how I might be able to get the external monitor to work with my laptop?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Nathan

Answer:How to connect external LCD monitor to laptop (IBM ThinkPad R50e)?

You just need to push the plug in securely (even tighten the thumb screws, if it has any)
Then turn on

It should default to the external, straight away
If not use the Fn+F7 keys as you said (note: I haven't downloaded your manual to confirm this)

By the way, the monitor works normally, and all, doesn't it ?

Due to my "NTLDR is Compressed" error after a system restore (XP), I have finally decided to 'punt' and purchase Windows 7.  My question is whether a Windows 7 Upgrade will require my current XP OS be up and running to begin the install, or can it be initiated from boot-up?  That is, because of my current  NTLDR situation, getting XP up and running is impossible.  Ideally, I'd like to purchase the Windows 7 Upgrade, boot up with these disks, and have WIndows 7 recognize my prior XP OS, and finally load the new OS. Or ...  do I need to purchase the full version (non-upgrade)?

Answer:Windows 7 Upgrade -- Boot w/ setup disk or Start with OS already operating?

No direct upgrade path from XP to Win 7. That means back up your important files, and boot with upgrade disk.Win 7 sees the XP partition, and you can install.Format and use the XP space if it does not work right anyhow. I personally buy OEM full versions from Newegg. Your choice. And anything important on your HD, and you can't boot, pull the drive, put in an external enclosure, and see if you can find and save, Just a thought.

Hey guys, first post, got a bit of an interesting issue.

Months ago, when I first built this computer, I installed Windows7 on a 120GB SSD drive. A month or so after, I found that I needed more space, so I got a 256GB SSD (installed Windows 7 on it as well), which I've been using since and love. As I expected, when the system booted up, I got a Windows Boot Manager menu asking which of the two Windows 7s I would like to boot to. Makes sense, right? Two drives, both with Windows 7 on them, which does the user want to use? No problem, I'd pick the first, which went to the larger 256GB drive, everything was peachy.

Fast forward to today. I have a new system that I'm building and I figured I'd pop out the 120GB SSD from this machine and use it in the new system, which won't be for gaming so I don't need too much storage. When I popped out the drive, and rebooted, I now get a message that the operating system cannot be found. Something along the lines of the following:

Loading Operating System...Boot Disk Failure

I go into the BIOS, and yep, BIOS sees the 256GB SSD, but I can't boot to it. When I put the Windows 7 install disk in and go to "Repair your computer", and "System Recovery Options", it sees no Operating Systems. It's like something on that 120GB drive was keeping track of the 256GB drive. Did the 120GB drive keep a OS loader of sorts on it that's required to boot off of the 256GB drive?

When I put the 120GB drive back in, th... Read more

Answer:Loading Operating System ... DISK BOOT FAILURE (2 HDDs)

I just ran Disk Management and see that the 120GB drive has a "System Reserved" partition that the 256GB drive does not:

System Reserved
100 MB NTFS
Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Might this be what the 256GB drive is missing?

Thx!
