Ethernet Capability in ThinkPad A21m [2628]

Question: Ethernet Capability in ThinkPad A21m [2628]

My ThinkPad A21m [2628] does not currently have Ethernet capability. (?Network card? was an optional extra at the time of purchase in 2001.) The Ethernet port on the rear of the ThinkPad A21m is covered over with a cover that looks like it could be pried off. It is hard to see whether there is an actual Ethernet port underneath the cover. I am wondering whether I would be able to add Ethernet capability to this computer. Can I simply pry off the cover, buy a compatible network card, put it into the computer myself according to the hardware manual, and then install the driver? Or, does the fact that the Ethernet port is covered over mean that there is nothing I can do about it now? My operating system is Windows 2000 SP4. I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Ethernet Capability in ThinkPad A21m [2628]

Yes.

Just replace the modem card with an appropriate LAN/modem combo card and it will work "out of the box".

You might have to download the appropriate driver, but the procedure is as simple as stated above, I've performed this myself many a times in the old days on both A2x and T2x units.

Hi, Can someone please tell me exactly where to find the USB port driver? Thank you very much for your time, Rob

Answer:a21m 2628 - E1U USB driver

For which operating system? I believe that Win2k and on have built-in universal USB drivers. For Win98 USB floppy disk drivers, see this. For other A21m drivers, see this.

Question: A21M type 2628

I have an IBM ThinkPad A21m. In the back, where the I/O panel is there is an ethernet RJ45 connector and a regular modem connector. I have been able to connect using the modem to internet in the past. However the ethernet has never worked. I was going through the books that came with the PC and apparently the modem and ethernet are on a combo card.

In the packet there is also a card, not installed in th PC. It is a Xircom card. I did a search online for the serial number and FRU number and this is where it took me:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-4PBMN7.html?doctype=Product information

I know little to nothing about laptop hardware and installation. I tried removing all the screws off the laptop but still could not remove the cover. Do I need to install this card? SHouldnt a laptop, espcially an IBm professional series one come with ethernet enabled? Am I missing something?

I would love any ideas on this one. I am actually fixing as a favor for someone. Thanks in advance.

Here is the home page for that specific adapter:

I think I have to install the adapter in the PC but where and how? Do I have to connect any wires to it afterwards?

My ThinkPad A21m (2628-F2U, PIII 750 MHz (256KB), 512 MB RAM) works very efficiently with Windows 2000 SP4 and seems to work better on the internet with dial-up, than my higher-powered, 2GB RAM Windows XP computers). Unfortunately, it is now difficult to get anti-virus and firewall software that are compatible with Windows 2000. (I suspect - but haven't had the chance to fully investigate it yet - that my A21m would not meet the hardware specifications for the current versions of anti-virus and firewall software anyway. I was wondering whether switching to Linux, Ubuntu, or some other operating system would help or would only add to my woes. If I switched to Linux, for example, would the Thinkpad drivers and software work with the new operating system? Would most other programs, such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Office, and so on, work with the new operating system? If anyone has had experience with the problem of Windows 2000 no longer being supported by anti-virus and firewall providers, I would appreciate your suggestions and comments. Thank you.

Answer:Operating System for A21m (2628-F2U) - Linux? Ubuntu?

I had the same problem with my A21m (2628 - GXU PIII 800 MHz) a few years ago, so I upgraded it to Windows XP Professional (SP3). My machine is also fully loaded with 512 MB of RAM,  I then installed Norton as the anti-virus/firewall software. I have to admit that the machine is rather sluggish though. I tend not to use it in favour of my 3GB R500.

I have an IBM A21m laptop and am having trouble getting the ethernet port to work. There is a slot for an ethernet cable in the back of the laptop but when I try to connect to my cable modem the ethernet does not pick up any signal. If I use the USB cable it works fine. I went to the IBM web site to see if I can get an ethernet card driver. I found one, downloaded it and intsalled it, but still nothing.

Does anyone know how I can get the ethernet to work on this machine?

As always, I appreciate any and all of your help. Thank you.

My Thinkpad a22m 2628 is running Windows 2000 SP4 and the drivers for the sound are installed acording to the computer and it seems to be utilizing the resources correctly. I have turned on the spekers themselves and they work fine under linux I know that it is a combo driver (CS4624/CS4297A) and I have installed to the letter of the drivers from the Lenovo website but still no sound with the speakers or headphone jacks any help would be appreciated.Thank you in advance

Answer:Thinkpad a22m 2628 no sound

Hello,
if you run the downloaded audio-package, it only will be extracted to C:\DRIVERS\W2K\Audio (or similar). You additionally have to execute the CRYSETUP.exe from there.

Please also read the "Readme" from download page for additional requirements to get sound.

Answer:IBM ThinkPAD 2628-Cmos P/w Lost, Help!!

Im not too sure if they have this on laptops, but on most desktop motherboard there is a jumper which will reset everything in your bios.

Its similar to the one found on hard drivers, just move the jumper over and it should reset everything including the password. Couldnt tell you where to find it or even if there is one though. Sorry.

According to this link, the A22m (2628) ThinkPad can have up to 512MB PC133 SODIMM's (2x 256MB).  So I bought 2x 256MB PC133 SODIMM's and...  it doesn't work. When I have both 256MB sticks in there, it doesn't turn on at all.  I can't even get to the BIOS.  When I have one 256MB stick in there and one of the original 128MB sticks in there, it sorta works.  I'm able to get to the BIOS and am told, in there, that the "installed memory" is 384MB.  Yet when I try to actually go past the BIOS, I get this message:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. That's not an error I get when I have the original 128MB SODIMM's in the laptop. Also, when I try to do as the message suggests, the Windows XP installer freezes.Any ideas as to what's wrong?Message Edited by yawnmoth on 01-27-2008 04:31 PM

Run Memtest on first one stick, then the other stick, swap each to a different slot, and finally run them together, and again swapping Stick 1 to Slot2  and v.v..You may have bought the wrong type of RAM.

Hi Everyone,

I really need help! I have a IBM ThinkPad A20m type 2628 Pentium III 700MHz 128MB 12gig HD with Windows 2000 Pro. I do own System Suite 5 and it's updated weekly with AV and backups done religiously. I was copy some pics to floppy when it locked up and I had to reset it. It never booted again. I get a blue screen that Say's "STOP :<0x814418B0, 0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000>(0x8148B910, 0x0000007B, 0x8142F450 these show up intermittently) inaccessible_boot_device. Check for Viruses, remove any new configuration. Run CHKDSK /F (tried"Command not known") to check for HD corruption then restart computer. Refer to manual for troubleshooting stop errors." Now, I found I can't get it to boot at all, even in "safe" mode or any of the options after pushing the F8 key to get to the advanced options. It will always go to the Blue stop error screen almost all the time. Now the only times I get around it is with the System Suite 5 rescue disk, but when it boots to the "Help Screen" it shows none of my backup's to be there. I can get into BIOS F12 "Boot Menu" option 5. MBA UNDI (Bus0 Slot3) It then Say's,"PXE-E61:Media Test Failure, check cable" This is the only diagnostic I found that seems to work or find something. Other than that I always get the "Evil Blue Screen".I'm sure this is not a Virus, cause if anything I'm obsessive about scanning for Virus. The pl... Read more

Hi, I am writing this for my Mother-In-Law.  She has a Thinkpad A21M type 2628 G1U.  The laptop does not seem to receive power even when it is plugged into the wall.  The little green battery light goes on, I press the start button and the power light blinks once, and nothing else happens. No Fans, Hard drive does not start, no power to open the DVD drive, No LCD activity, No POST test NOTHING. Since she does not use it very much I checked the memory module connections, removed and reinstalled -Yes I used a grounding strap, Same with the Hard Drive. It has a docking station so I tried it with the docking station connected thinking maybe the power switch was not good.  Using the power switch on the docking station did not change anything. Is there anyone who could give me suggestions.  If she knew how to use it I would suggest she get a new one.  But since she uses it so little, Solitaire mostly every few months, I would rather see if there is a simple inexpensive fix for this one. Thank you all for your help. Barry

I had to reformat my IBM Thinkpad A21m and reinstall Win 2000 all over.

Now the problem is that in Device Manager there is a device that comes up as 'unknown' (it comes up as a branch in a section also called 'unknown'). I don't know what it is since everythign that shoudl be working is working. When I disable it or uninstall it, it does not go away - it loads each and everytime in reboot Win 2000 (and it slows down the boot time like crazy!). Prior to reformatting, there was no 'unknown' devices in my Device Manager.

do i need to install certain drivers when i format and install a fresh copy of Windows 2000?? i went to IBM's site to download the drivers for my model. I will try them out and keep y'all posted

thanks,

Zach.

you are installing drivers for the nic ? both notebooks will not accept the drivers ? or just one. ? the drivers i will assume are for windows 2000 ? if it is just one notebook that will not accept the drivers it is quite possible that the embedded nic is bad.

I've got a Thinkpad A20m 2628-11U that has an IBM Travelstar 10gig Drive in it.  After using the laptop for about half an hour, the drive warms up and gets to the point of someone using a hammer and chisel to store data.  So I decided to purchase a WD250BEVE (PATA) drive to replace it.  Right off the bat, The laptop would not recognize the drive at all.  I've tried updating the bios and such to no avail.  I've even RMA'd the drive with western digital questioning them along the way as to the possibility of why their drive would not work in this unit.  They show no record of complaint.  When the new drive showed up, I got the same results.  Can anybody tell me if IBM put a drive or Brand limit on this unit or have any idea why a WD would not be recognized at all? Thanks for your time... Gary

Answer:Hard Drive Upgrade on a Thinkpad A20m 2628-11U

Welcome to the forum! Have you properly inserted the drive, because that's the reason for drive not being "seen" by the machine 90% of the time, and that can be tricky on A2x and A3x unit...make sure it's sitting properly in its caddy and is pushed in all the way. Even if your machine had a BIOS limit (137GB for older ThinkPads) the drive would still be recognized. There are no "brand restrictions" on ThinkPads of this generation. Hope this helps.

So i tried restarting, changing the boot order in bios to boot from the disk, trying a different disk, making an ultimate boot disk and putting it in, tried to boot from a usb, and i just kept getting the same message. My experience is that this may result in the XP CD's inability to do what it should do.<<NTLDR is missing, press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.>>That error message should never appear when trying to install an O/S to a bare drive from a MS XP CD. Hi everyone. My dad's got a Thinkpad A21m and i can't access the BIOS because it's password protected. Since he doesn't remember which password he's put there, I thought opening up the laptop and disconnecting the small battery would be enough to reset the BIOS, but now it's worse! Or have i done that and now he's asking me for a default password, which i don't know?Could anyone please help me out on this?Message Edited by ejmoreira on 05-02-2009 12:03 PM

ejmoreira, welcome to the forum, your father will need to remember which password was set, removing the bios battery has prompted the request for the supervisor password. There are no default passwords which will help. The only other suggestions we can offer you here are that you look in the Maintainance Manual, which explains about passwords, and replace the mainboard, or contact service or a service partner in your area.  I'm sorry; this subject is not allowed to be discussed here as stated in the forum rules and I have to lock the thread. No posts shall include instructions or directions intended to subvert security measures, including passwords, locking mechanisms, fingerprint scans, etc, nor shall any posts provide descriptions to the location of, nor direct links to content related to these topics.  Thanks for understanding

There is an icon for a LAN or high speed connection called VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adaptor - which says it is disabled?
Is that because I havent got one or is it because my broad band is throughSpeed touch USB ADSL PPP conenction?

I AM VERY CONFUSED & DONT KNOW WHAT I NEED TO BUY - I would be grateful for any help. Regards GJC

Hi,

Ive just been given a 'Dock' for my laptop,
its very nice, its a 'Dell C/port II' and it suits my 'Latitude CSx'
very nicely thank you.

It has an ethernet socket on the back, but i get no ethernet response
when i try to use it.
I don't know if theres an ethernet unit in the 'Dock' or not.

I think that somehow the PC could tell me if theres an ethernet unit
in there or not, but i dont know how.

Anyone know how to tell ... ?

John

Thank you for having this forum available. My husband passed down his Thinkpad A21M Type 2628-GTU to our son. The wifi card that was with it is a Lucent Technologies Orinoco Silver 11mbit/s t/n 03549501 p/n012938/c. When powered up last night, the ethernet was fully functional, but the wireless card didn't connect to the net. My husband assumed the Lucent card was bad. Is there something compatible I may buy to replace it? Do you have a suggestion on what he might have missed in trying to get it to work at home? He has used this laptop all over the country including at home before, so I would imagine he knows what he is doing. But, we do have a new service provider since the company upgraded his computer system. Thank you so much!

Answer:Compatible WIFI card for Thinkpad a21m, wifi orinoco silver no longer working

Welcome to the forum! Honestly, it's time to upgrade to a newer card anyway, at least b/g. Any PCMCIA wireless card will work with your A21m, it all depends on your router, and your personal preferences. Hope this helps.

i have a thinkpad a21e with a 14.4" screen will the motherboard from an a21m 12' work with the a21e, the a21m has a cracked lcd, or could i just change over the 14' a21e to the a21m?

Answer:thinkpad a21e a21m motherboard change? or 12' lcd to 14' lcd change

It should work with the 12.1" display including its cable. If you'll get problems with it, you additional should replace the display sub-board where the display cable is attached to (next to UltraBay-cage), if the 12.1" - sub-board has a different FRU#.

Hi, guys...I have an "old" IBM Thinkpad X20 that I'm trying to get a Wireless connection for.  I currently have Qwest Internet with my regular PC, and their Modem comes with a wireless attachment.  The USB-plugin wireless connector does work...I tried it on another PC I own.  I don't believe there's anything to load (drivers, etc)...just plug the USB Device in and that's all it takes.  I thought that until I decided to try it on the Thinkpad.  It seems to know the device is hooked up...but there's no recognition that's it's a wireless connector.  I'm missing something...and I think it might be that I need an IBM ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN PCI Express Mini Card...or something like that?  Right now, the only thing on the laptop is a 3Com 10/100 mini PCI Ethernet Adapter. I'm dumb as a stump when it comes to laptops...any help you can throw my way would be appreciated!  And right now the OS is Windows 2000, but I'll probably try upgrading that at a later date... Thanks!!!!! Spaz23

Answer:Trying to upgrade Thinkpad X20 for wireless capability - HELP!

You very likely do need a driver for the USB-attached WiFi adapter because there wasn't much (any?) WiFi support in Win2k. If you don't have a drivers CD for this device then you could Google on the make/model of adapter and the keyword "driver." Also go to the manufacturer's website and look there. What's the make/model of your adapter? Your other option, to upgrade to WinXP, might solve this problem but will likely slow down system performance substantially because of RAM limitations.

Solved. I use 'wired' to access a secure intranet, and 'wireless' for general internet use in the office and elsewhere. The wireless connection kept disappearing after I had used the wired connection. Here's a typical scenario: * Boot up with wireless only - no problem.* Plug in wired network cable - it takes over and wireless is turned off, at a deep level.* Unplug wired network cable - no connections! The wireless network does not resume.* Run the Windows network trouibleshooter to discover "wireless capability is turned off".* Pressing Function F9 and clicking the Master and Individual on-off buttons does not help.* Windows network trouibleshooter offers to fix it: accept the offer, and it works again. There has been a lot of discussion about wireless connections on various models of ThinkPad and numerous solutions offered and I've tried most of them. Finally I got to uninstall ThinkVantage Access Connections and now everything works as expected. In fact it is possible to have both networks active at the same time (for example in different browsers). Conclusion: Wired and wireless don't mix well in ThinkVantage Access Connections, so just uninstall it.

This laptop has no ethernet, the adapter is there, physicaly. There is nothing wrong under device manager, I have all the newest drivers from lenovo, and still no ethernet. There isn't even one listed under device manager. I checked the bios to see if it were turned off, it wasn't. I reset the bios to default incase I missed something, still nothing. The plug is there, its just not working.

Answer:After upgrade Thinkpad t22 has no ethernet

This was after an upgrade? Did you do a spyware/ virus check? A similer thing happened to my USB ports, and it ended up being something like that. Perhaps if you have limited scanning you could do a system restore? Or if the device is listed properly as working in device manager is your DSL provider having problems?

I recently did a refresh install of Windows XP Pro on my IBM ThinkPad T43. Like all the other refreshes I have done, I had all the drivers ready. I downloaded all the drivers from IBM and all seemed to work fine. The wireless drivers worked and is detecting my network at home. But, when I installed the network driver, everything seemed to install correctly, but when I goto the Device Manager it still says the driver hasn't been installed. I looked for an EXE where the driver install was installed to the hdd. I didnt find one. The Network Connections only shows my wireless (which doesn't actually connect to the internet, but connects to my wireless). Am I missing something basic? Is there something within windows that I have to set up? Like I said, I downloaded the latest network drivers from IBM, and I am sure they are right, but the Ethernet still isn't recognized within Windows.

This is the first refresh I have done on this laptop though, my other refreshes were seamless.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Answer:IBM ThinkPad T43 > Ethernet not recognized in XP

Recheck in IBM and try a different one. Sometime, for certain laptops models, there are more than 1 driver depending on the network chip.

I saw this very very very often with ThinkPad laptops (We have a fleet of A22m, A31 and R40 at work).

Hello, recently I installed windows 7 on my Lenovo T60. First I thought the install went flawlessly because I was able to access the internet but later I realized that I was accessing the internet through wireless and my ethernet port was not detected. I installed the intel chipset driver but I can't install any ethernet drivers because the ethernet card is flat out not detected at all. I've searched all over Google and haven't found anything like this so I'm completely stumped.

Also theres only one driver in device manager that's unknown but I'm pretty sure its some sort of storage driver, its called Intel(R) ICH7M/U LPC Interface Controller - 27B9.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Thinkpad T60 ethernet connection not detected

First thing is to see if Lenovo supports W7 on the T60. If they do, the drivers should be available from Lenovo.

Did you run the W7 Upgrade advisor before you installed? It would have told you about any driver issues,

If not, things get more interesting. You may need use Vista drivers if no native W7 drivers are available from Lenovo.

When I am at work I plug my Thinkpad Yoga into the Onelink Pro to connect all the peripherals, inlcuding mouse, keyboard, printer, and two monitors. The Onelink Pro also has my ethernet connection to the office network. I have had this setup for 2 1/2 years and it has always worked great. This morning, however, when I connected to the Onelink everything worked normally except the ethernet network connection. I could not connect to my office network, and I got messages like "Cannot find a valid network"; so I ran the Lenovo diagnostics. It told me there was an invalid IP configuration. I have unplugged and reset both the Onelink and the computer; but nothing had fixed the problem. I have also checked for the latest drivers, and everything seems to be up to date. Does anyone have any suggestions to get me reconnected to my ethernet network, or is my Onelink starting to go bad?

Been troubleshooting this for a day with no result so hopefully someone here might have a suggestion that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows.  I have an Asix 88179-based USB 3.0 ethernet adapter that just refuses to work on my Yoga yet works fine on my T440p (also with Win8.1 x64), so I know the adapter itself is OK.  I tried installing the Asix driver package to no avail, although I did have some fleeting success getting the adapter to work once when I uninstalled the Asix package and restarted the machine. When I unplugged the adapter and plugged it back in, however... nothing. Most of the time Windows doesn't even acknowledge that anything is plugged into the USB port. Occasionally I get a USB error because Windows sees the adapter in the port but cannot find the driver. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the MS and Intel USB controllers to no avail. Meanwhile, the USB ports work just fine with everything else I plug in to them.  I'm totally at a loss why the Yoga does not see the ethernet adapter or will not load the driver. All the Yoga drivers and software (and bios) are up to date as of today and there are no Windows updates to install. Is there some Lenovo or intel software I need to get this to work? Something seems to be missing here, but I've no idea what.

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga not seeing USB ethernet adapter

As an update... I uninstalled all signs of the Asix drivers, l uninstalled the Windows and Intel USB controllers (and let Windows reinstall them on restart) and the thernet adapter worked... ONCE. When I removed it and plugged it back in... NOTHING. Windows did not even see it. I then happened to plug in a USB 3.0 flash drive and that was not seen by Windows any more either (it worked fine before). ASll USB 2.0 devices work, however.  So somehow the ethernet adapter is killing the Windows USB 3.0 contollers so they no longer recognize any USB 3.0 devices. Anyone know how to fix this?

My hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall Windows XP, and my laptop did not come with any system restore cd's.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T40. I made my computer a dual boot linux system so that I could get online to obtain the appropriate drivers to install to get my system up and running and am having problems with several drivers, the ethernet Drivers being the most pressing at the moment.

I have attempted going to Lenovo's website and installing them manually, with no success, I still have those annoying yellow exclamation points. I installed all of the driver updates on the site. I did begin with the Chipset first. I'm not sure what else to do, I have attempted everything that I know possible to make this work, and it just won't.

Are the drivers on the Lenovo site the correct one's or are there other drivers that I need that aren't on that site that I am missing?

Thanks!

I took apart LCD screen (not all the way mind you. Just so I could move it out a little from Housing) And wiggled the ribbon cable that plugs in back of screen. Found that the sticky tape wasn't seating the cable in firmly to screen plug socket for cable. Cut me up some strips of clear duct tape. Applied pressure to ribbon cable to make sure it was seated firmly. Taped it in place with duct tape. Reassembled Screen on Laptop. Haven't had a problem since.

Hello!I'm having a problem with my ThinkPad's ethernet adapter occasionally stopping working. It works normally for weeks and then starts making problems and disconnects. Once it dies I cannot get it to connect no matter what I do. When this happens, in Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections I can see the adapter saying "No Internet Connection". If I unplug the cable, it detects that the cable is unplugged. Plugging the cable back in results in it trying to identify network unsuccessfully until it finally shows no connection again. When this happens I just connect to the same router using WiFi and I can browse normally again. So it is definitely not the internet connecton, it's the laptop. I've tried different cables as well. The same result. Device name: Realtek PCIe GBE Family ControllerHardware ID: PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_004717AA&REV_15Driver Version: 10.3.723.2015 I've tried disabling and reenabling the device, I've tried reinstalling the drivers. Nothing changed this behavior. Does anybody have a suggestion what to do about this?

Answer:Ethernet port on the Thinkpad T500 is broken

Hi rickerich, welcome to the forum,

I'm not sure that your ethernet port is broken, when docked the ethernet port on your T500 will be disabled allowing only use of the ethernet port on the docking station.  The same applies for the VGA port.

Sorry it may not be what you wanted to hear, but the behaviour is normal.

Is this purely an option or is it standard?? I sort of get the impression it is standard when you read the marketing bumf, but on the shopping sites I have visited they list it as Fast Ethernet only 100Mb/s. Are there specific model numbers that contain gigabit ethernet?  I have been looking at the Intel version with 13.3" screen, and when I look at AMD version, it does seem to have ethernet.  Is it only the Intel 13.3" that does not have gigabit then???  Or is it only 14/15" models that have gigabit?

Answer:gigabit ethernet on Thinkpad Edge Intel 13.3"?

Go to Support and Downloads and enter the 7 character part number in the Quick Path.  Look for 1 Gb Ethernet in the description. Gigabit Ethernet is available in both AMD and Intel configurations on the Edge 13 (see the Personal Systems Reference).  The driver package for the Edge 13 does refer to either a Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet controller.

Hello everybody, this is my first post here as I just bought an Edge e430 from Lenovo. It came with Win 8 installed (let's skip this) and as I tried to connect to the LAN for verifying the license I realized that I did not have any network connection. No way to connect, no matter what I clicked and what I switched on/off.... no connection (even the local one). As I am a Linux user, after figuring out how to boot from CD I tried Linux on a Live CD to see whether it was a Win 8 issue or a card one. No connection there too. Trying to set up here and there I think I grasped the problem, however I does not make any sense to me. Is it possible that the new model is IPv6 only (with no IPv4 retrocompatibility). If this is the case (I repeat: it doesn't make sense) what should I do to make it working, at least in Win 8? Thank you very much for your time. P.S. Forgot to say that I don't have any WiFi to try.

Answer:Thinkpad edge e430 ethernet problem

Ok, I see no reply but I keep updating the problem. I took the pc to work, connected the cable and.... tada! Connection working! I am actually posting it from the Linux live CD. The question is, why my home LAN isn't working??? I used it for over one year and had (at least) 5 different laptops connected without the smallest glitch. Any ideas?

Hello,  a year ago I bough Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 20CD0038MC with Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and also OneLink Pro Dock.  Because Yoga has't own Ethernet adapter I connected cable to OneLink Pro Dock. Unfortunatelly it disconnect cable (and switch to WiFI) many times during each day. Everytime it takes only second and than cable was normally connected, but this destroyed every work which depends on stable connection (e.g. streamed webinars). Sometimes disconnection occurs once per day, sometimes 10x per day.  So I bough also original Lenovo USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter and connect it directly to USB port on Yoga - the same problem. So I decided that OneLink Pro Dock itself is fine and problem has to be in Yoga.  Approx. 2 months ago, disconnection time starts growing and sometimes I spend whole day only on WiFi. Two weeks ago, after last diconnection Ethernet don't get back and now I'm on WiFi only over two weeks.  I checked - Ethernet port on OneLink Pro Dock - both LEDs working and shows some traffic- Devices in Windows 8.1 - there is only wireless adapter (and bluetooth adapter), but in LENOVO support is not any new drivers for Ethernet, only one adding support of wake-on-lan. I installed it anyway. - when I turn off WiFi adapter, I'm without connection - LAN doesn't return- I found new drivers for OneLink Pro Dock, but when I attempt to install it, get error message that system doesn't find any OneLInk Dock :-/ (it shows... Hello, I have a T540p and noticed that the ethernet lights remain iluminated when the device enters hibernation (plugged in or on battery) when there is not an ethernet cable connected.  After searching around online, I found two similar cases; one was the result of a driver issue and was was a hardware fault. I am led to believe this is a driver issue as the port functions properly and has never sustained any form of liquid damage. I tried disabling the Wake on LAN features as described in the thread I came across, but the behavior still persists. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is the driver you require:- http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-54046

Once the setup finishes, you need to go to C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\Win32 to install the actual driver.

Hope this helps.

I have an IBM A21m. It has a TV out port. I took my connector cord from my home PC video card or its TV out connector (the cord comes out from the port and turns into a small hub that has an S-Video port and 3 output ports) I then connect the s-video to the tv but it won't work. I tried changing the properties in the display settings to tv but that didn't seem to do anything either. I am wondering if I am using the wrong cord? or am I doing something else wrong?  any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Hooking up to TV an A21m

Try this link from the Lenovo support site as a starting point: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-58625.html Mind you, I have tried to follow it for my own A21M, but could not get a clear picture. I must admit though that my TV was an older model with no S-video ports.

I have a Thinkpad T440s 20AQ with a Intel I218-LM ethernet adapter. The OS is Windows 8.1 x64 Since approx. half year ago, the ethernet adapter started to disable itself automatically every 1-4 weeks. The occurance of this problem has no pattern and is unexpectable. When it happens, I cannot reenable it under Network Connection window. Rebooting the system has ~50% chance to solve this problem. The reliable way to solve this problem is disable and reenable the adapter under Device Manager.

Hi, We finally got a faster internet plan (a miracle in Australia!) but my laptop refuses to download at greater than 4.5Mbps no matter whether I connect direct to the router or over wifi (whereas my iPhone or partner's desktop easily get over 50Mbps on wifi/ethernet). Has anyone else experienced this issue and had any luck with it? I've tried turning off QoS, anti virus, anti malware, firewall, disabled bluetooth, got all the latest Lenovo drivers/firmware, and according to the Intel website I have the latest ethernet and wireless drivers, it just feels like something else is causing the issue as it isn't isolated to one connection type...

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E440Windows 7 Professional 64 bit I just purchased the computer yesterday and, given a rather unstable wi-fi connection at my temporary residence, I tried to connect the computer to via the ethernet connection. Upon connecting, I lose all internet access. My older dell laptop operates nigh flawlessly on this connection, so it is something computer-side. Despite the fact that the connection shows as having internet access and the fact that I can pull up the full connection map (which is displaying all other computers on the LAN through to the internet connection) the minute I try to access the internet, nothing is able to load. This is the case for both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, as well as any background downloads, such as Steam. As for the lights beside the ethernet jack on the computer: the green is lit solid, and the yellow flashes intermittently. I have updated the driver for the ethernet adapter, but the problem remains. I also installed Access Connections just to see if it might let me view a little more information about the connection (its connection test, though it shows having internet connection, fails), but I am unfamiliar with the program and do not know if it is helping or hindering me in this regard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: Since then, I have attempted connecting to the internet via Safe Mode, with both windows and norton firewalls turned off. No luck. I don't have another et... Read more

We have a large stock of ThinkPad 13s.  We are using generic USB-Ethernet adaptors.By default, the adaptor is not listed as PCI LAN when attempting to PXE boot.If we go into the firmware config. and Reset to Defaults (f9) then PCI LAN is listed, but what's the setting that enables it?  We can't find it and don't want to have to Reset to Defaults if it's just one setting.

Answer:What's the ThinkPad 13 firmware setting to enable USB-Ethernet adaptor?

Are you actually able to PXE boot your generic USB-ethernet adapter?
As far as I know, only the Lenovo USB-ethernet adapter will PXE boot.  Because only the option ROM for the Lenovo-branded HW is included in the BIOS.

I've several IBM ThinkPads T60p. Unfortunately one ThinkPad shows in the BIOS 'MAC Address (Internal LAN): 00 00 00 00 00 00' and sometimes also '02 00 00 00 00 00'. Also the green LED close to the Ethernet connector is dark if this laptop is powered off (power adapter attached) and a network cable is attached. Therefore no Wake on LAN is possible. To my surprise the network adapter is working in Windows and there also has a proper MAC address. Also Wake on LAN is possible in Windows.Because all BIOS settings and also the BIOS version are exactly the same as on all other IBM ThinkPads T60p I think there's a problem with my internal Ethernet adapter.Does someone know if it's possible to replace this internal Ethernet adapter? I ask because I've also an IBM ThinkPad T60p which is broken and therefore I intend to exchange the internal Ethernet adapters if possible.

Model is A21m series Thinkpad laptop. I put the laptop to absolute full battery draining mode, cpu speed max, lcd brightness maxed, no alarms, no standby/hibernate, etc. The battery drains completely, first the screen turns off (but I can still work on the laptop through an external monitor) and then I wait for the whole thing to just drain and shut down completely... ok so the battery is at 0%... I plug it in to charge, and it takes only 20-30 minutes for the light to turn solid green? Is that normal? Is it theoretically still charging even while the light is green?  Other info, cycle count=91, remaining capacity~20.1Wh I've tried charging other times, but even in super power save mode, the battery goes from 100% charge (with an estimate of 2 hours battery time) to 0% maybe within 15-20 minutes time... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:A21m Battery Issues

Chances are that your battery is old and needs to be replaced... What's the manufacture date (available in Power Manager)? Hope this helps.

I have TPFanControl, CPU temp constantly stays below 60°C; shuts down without warning anywhere from 20 minutes to 2-2½ hours after booting.  Have used compressed air to clean out fan; taken laptop apart down to CPU level and dusted.  Same problem.  Talked to a repair person I trust, and he suggests that if it is a systemboard issue, nothing could be traced.  I certainly don'y want to spend funds for repair if that is the case.  Any suggestions

Hi welcome to the forum!  The A21 series uses PC100 LOW Density ram.  Do you have the part numbers for the two stick or ram that you tried?  The easiest way to tell if they are Low Density, for a 256mb stick, is that it will have 16 black chips on each one, 8 on each side...

Answer:Boot up problem (a21m)

Welcome to the forum! Your machine needs a new motherboard. What you're experiencing is known as a "Blink Of Death" that attacks A2x and T2x units apart from T23. No reason, and no cure are known. Good luck.

PC Doctor diagnostics runs and "passes" the CPU fan, but after 5 seconds at boot into Windows 2000 the fan shuts off never to work until the next boot.  During its Windows use, the computer shuts down randomly from overheating.  All the PC Doctor diagnostics (except for the "loopback" tests never done) "passes", so this appears to be a motherboard problem.   Without purchasing a new motherboard, can anyone recommend a laptop cooler that would cease, or at least reduce, the random shutdown?

Answer:A21m overheating - fan not working

Hey. I am having some very frustrating issues with my a21m. It is having issues turning on. I don't think it is the famous *blink of death* that others have.Basically, I press the power button with the AC cord in, and the 'charging' light turns off and back on. With the AC cord out, the hard drive light flickers and I hear a slight clicking sound. Nothing else happens.I have tried the ten presses thing, but I have no other ideas. Please help!
