Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

Question: Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

The latest system update installed UltraNav driver 16.1.1.0 of 4/6/2012. This apparently implements smooth scrolling which is very nice to use BUT it significantly reduces my battery life. I'd like to optimise battery life and return to my previous scrolling functionality. I'd appreciate advice on how to determine which version of the driver I was running before this update, and how can I restore that version of the driver. (I tried using the roll-back function in Windows Device Manager but that installed version 7.5.27.24 of 7/6/2007 which disbaled scrolling altogether.) T617658CTO Windows XP SP3

Preferred Solution: Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

I stumbled onto the Fn-F8 facility for managing UltraNav and realise that I was confusing the smooth-scrolling function introduced in recent versions of FireFox with the EdgeMotion function in UltraNav which was presumable introduced on my system when I upgraded UltraNav from 7.5.17.24 to 16.1.1.0. I have disabled smooth-scrolling in FireFox but enabled EdgeMotion in UltraNav which seems like a nice compromise between convenience and power consumption. I still have minor quibbles with UltraNav, specifically, when I try to scroll within drop-down boxes in my usual Web applications (like Redmine, for example) the drop-down pane immediately disappears. I have to drag the pane control on the right (sorry, don't know the correct name for this) to find the option to select. Before the upgrade I could scroll within dropdowns on the trackpad. I also have a little block with up and down marks appearing to the left of the pointer arrow when I scroll which wasn't there before. I'd appreciate any advice about addressing these issues.

I keep trying to disable smooth scroll list boxes and even though I uncheck it in Advanced Settings, it remains on. What's the deal? I even go to the registry setting to change that and it doesn't work. I don't want smooth scrolling in list boxes. GR.

I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling. What I'm talking is this:1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.  2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc. The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before. Now this way is broken. Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:1. push middle button to enter scolling mode2. move mouse3. push again to exit scrolling mode This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver. I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

Answer:Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings. Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled... W530, Windows 7 x64.

For some reason, touchpad edge scrolling, two-finger scrolling, and trackpoint+middle-button scrolling all fail to run in Microsoft Word 2013 (Office 365 University). They also fail to run in the Metro Mail App; and they mess with the zoom in Google Chrome. However, all three kinds of scrolling work fine in all other programs I've used, including other Office 365 programs (Excel 2013 and OneNote 2013). I have the latest version of the driver installed (11.4.30.1). I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it several times, to no avail. I was strongly tempted to leave it uninstalled and use standard Windows middle-click for my scroll function instead, but that doesn't work in Windows Explorer (where the only scrollable area is also clickable).  Thoughts or suggestions?

Answer:Scrolling problem with Elan UltraNav driver on Thinkpad L430, running Windows 8.1, Office 365

Trackpoint + middle button scrolling works on all other apps except Google Chrome.    This stopped working recently and after some testing  I found that it is localized to just Chrome.  Works in Firefox, Outlook Mail 2010,  Powerpoint 2010,  etc.   I am using Windows 7 Pro on a X200S.      Is there a Chrome setting involved to correct this?

Hi, Recently I had to reformat my T61p and reinstall everything from scratch. Before the format, UltraNav worked without any problems even when I was using my wireless BT mouse (Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000) together with UltraNav + latest version of the Microsoft IntelliPoint software. I could switch from the wireless mouse to UltraNav seemlessly. After formatting, I've installed all the latest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit from the Lenovo web site, and after that, UltraNav started to work erraticaly. Basically, what happens is that although the mouse pointer moves around when I use either the TouchPad or TrackPoint, the click action doesn't always work (I have to press several times for it to actually click) and most of the times, instead of just clicking, it actually sticks to the selected item and if I move it, it performs a dragging actions, as if I was pressing and dragging the mouse pointer. Sometimes, if I go to the ultranav properties and reselect the click and right click actions in the UltraNav settings, it starts working properly, but after some use, it goes back to the erratic behaviour. The only way I can use the mouse properly is by using my external mouse. I've tried rolling back to the previous version of the ultranav drivers (18), but still have the same behaviour. It works fine for some time, and after some use, it goes back to misbehaving. Has anyone seen this before and is there any fix at al... Read more

I'm at a loss as to where the options are to tweak the UltraNav pointer and touchpad on my Win7, 64-bit W530. I did a fresh Win7 install on it and have downloaded all the drivers (plus run the System Update utility), and while the UltraNav Driver is properly installed and working, I don't see any place to download the UltraNav UTILITY.  This is my fifth or sixth ThinkPad, and one of my favorite things is the UltraNav pointing stick combined with the touchpad. I like to change the effort required on the pointing stick, and then use the touchpad for slow motion and constrained motion controls. These settings have always been accessible under a tab on the Mouse control panel after installing the UltraNav Utility. I thought maybe the UltraNav Driver included the utility, but I can't find any way to access the old controls I'm so accustomed to having over the pointing devices.  Any ideas what I may be missing? My service ticket with Lenovo has been open for two weeks now with no response, so I thought I'd try my luck here. Thank you!!

Answer:W530 UltraNav Driver installed -- where is the UltraNav Utility?

The driver alone should be providing the UltraNav tab in Mouse properties. Give it an uninstall/reinstall.As far as I can tell, UltraNav Utility is the popup menu for enabling/disabling TrackPoint/touchpad upon Fn+F8 on older models.

I have successfully downloaded and installed the latest UltraNav driver and utility for Windows 7 on a T61 ThinkPad.  However, the UltraNav tab is not visible under Control Panel, Mouse Properties. Under Mouse properties and Device Manager it shows a PS/2 mouse, which I do not have connected.  Could this be causing a problem with the utility? The issue I'm trying to resolve is the cursor jumps around constantly and it's very Frustrating.  I've spent hours reseaching the problem and have determined the solution is to adjust the sensitivity of the TouchPad, if only I could get to the utility.

Question: Smooth scrolling

Hi folks, a small problem you can maybe help me with.
On my XP computer I upgraded Internet Explorer from version 6, to IE8 a few days ago. Everything went fine, however I instantly noticed that web page scrolling has been affected, and is now very jumpy. Using the mouse wheel, the page scrolls in several jumps even after I let go of the wheel.
In IE I've looked at tools> Internet options> advanced, and under the browsing list have made sure that "use smooth scrolling" is ticked. Also in control panel mouse properties buttons, autoscroll, scrolling size is set to one line, and "use MS office compatible scroll only" is ticked. However, when I close the mouse properties box, I get a warning .... Run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.... Not sure what this means?
Funny thing is, I also runs Firefox on the same PC, and scrolling web pages on that is absolutely fine, perfectly smooth, no jerks, and one line at a time. So it's definitely IE8 related
As always, any help proffered is gratefully received.

Answer:SMOOTH SCROLLING

Again, it sounds like drivers. Make sure the motherboard drivers are installed and up-to-date - espcially if it's a Via chipset board - and make sure you have the latest drivers for the graphics.Slow scrolling is almost always down to a system that can't cope with the load - your basic specs should be more than adequate, but drivers and other applications/viruses/Anti-Viruses/etc can slow things down.

Question: Smooth Scrolling!

Hello,

I have Internet Explorer 6 and i got problems scrolling.

I can scrool and all with the scroll on my mouse but it seems to scroll like 5 lines at a time. And instead of actually scrolling the page, it pauses then moves 5 lines down.

I want smooth scrolling instead of skippign those 4 other lines it actually shows them but passes them quickly

Answer:Smooth Scrolling!

This is actually a hardware problem, I think. At least it was in my case. I had to install the graphics driver for my video card and one for my monitor. And all my scrolling problems went away.

What kind of video card do you have and what kind of monitor? If you don't have a cd (which I didn't in the case of my monitor), go to the web site and download the file. The only reason I had the cd for the graphics card was that my husband had just bought the same card for his system. Liz

Answer:"UltraNav Utility" vs "UltraNav Driver" for T400

Hello, it could be that "the UltraNav utility enables the Fn-F8 shortcut when used in conjunction with the ThinkPad Hot Key Utility". Or it may provide "more fluid and comfortable crusor [sic] movement" (Googelberged from notebookreview forum).Another possibility could be, that it enables more detailed configuration of the touch pad. Greetings Tobias

Sometimes I get this annoying problem. My mouse scrolls fine(smooth) most of the time, but sometimes
it scrolls jumpy(skips a few lines each scroll). I did set the mouse wheel options in Control Panel to 1 line per scroll(after this issue automatically appeared), which is the min, but this problem occurs without any changes made by myself.

It happens in my browser and all other apps I run on the PC (photoshop, Windows Explorer etc)

If I reboot my PC, the problem is gone. How can I solve this mouse scrolling jumping issue?

HI,

Im new to the forum and have a question.:wave

I have a windowsxp computer which i got upgraded, upgraded the ram from 512mb to 1gb...and also updated the graphics card. the computer just would not work after this, so i decided to take out the extra ram and it seemed to work fine. however, after sitting in my lounge for two or three months i decided to restore it all to factory settings to give to a friend. it all works fine, but only thing is when its scrolling it kind of gives a swimming effect...it makes you feel dizzy! as opposed to the smooth scrolling. any ideas on how to fix this???? is it because i updated the graphics card? would this have come back off after i restored it all?? sorry for sounding so dumb, but its just one little thing that is rather annoying! thanks for any advice....

Answer:Scrolling is swimming instead of smooth

when you restored pc to original it doesnt have the driver to the new card . you will need to dl the drivers for your video card and install them

It's a waste for me to have 120hz monitor when I can only trully enjoy it during gaming or dragging and dropping files, icons, active windows etc.
When I scroll down using the mouse button or just dragging the slide bar, I get this very jerky motion, which is really annoying especially when you want to scroll through lines of text while trying to read them at the same time, looking for specific word.
I googled the problem but no solution came up. Luckily for Chrome I did find an extension called "Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller", its made by the same people who made "Yet Another Smooth Scroller" for Firefox. This extension works flawless and exactly what I wanted to achieve. Unfortunately now when I look at the rest of my desktop, scrolling through Total Commander, IRC, Foobar2000 makes it really painfully obvious how shitty the scrolling in Windows is.

My question, does anyone know of a program or a way to enable ultra mega smooth scrolling in Windows 7?

My apologies if this has already been answered somewhere, I did a search but could not find it....

I have smooth scolling enabled for my web browser and it is nice, however for local windows when working on my computer I can't seem to make it happen. I found something called tweak ui that was suggested on another forum but it's "enable smooth scrolling" feature does not seem to affect local windows. The default "jerky" scrolling is just plain frustrating when scrolling through a long list of files looking for something in particular. When the list moves in large jerky increments it's very difficult to keep track of where you are in the list.

Is smooth scolling possible in all windows, not just web browsers???

I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

T510 4313-CTO, Windows 7 Pro, 128G SSD, 3G RamUltranav version 15.0.24.0, 06/23/2010 I have had the touchpad scrolling function working in the past, and turned it off a few months ago due to slightly erratic functioning, in that it would start scrolling at times I didn't want it to.Today I decided that I missed using it and went to re-enable it by cheching the box in Control Panel / Mouse / UltraNav / Touch Pad / Settings /  Scrolling / One Finger Scrolling. I then went to adjust the  Scrolling Region  but it is grayed out. I tried checking and unchecking the "Enable One Finger Scrolling" box, clicking "Apply", rebooting the PC, etc multiple times.A search on the forum only returned issues with scrolling not working with some programs, but nothing related to this. The Edge Motion region box is also greyed out. I then logged in as Administrator (I'm the only user on this PC) and  the scrolling region can be adjusted there, just like I used to be able to do when logged in as a standard user. Thanks in advance!

I just recently purchased a SL410 and am running Windows 7 Pro 32 Bit. I have a problem with one finger and two finger scrolling. I have updated the drivers for the Touchpad. But The scrolling works sometimes then sometimes it works and then stops working while scrolling. I have tried turning off single and/or two finger scrolling. But it does not work. I have even changed the Touchpad sensitivity but it does not work. I was thinking of trying the driver on the Synaptics site but did not know if that would work. If anyone has any other suggestions that would be great.

Answer:UltraNav issue with scrolling

OK I figure out some advanced settings needed to be turned off. I went into the Smart Check settings in Touchpad settings seem to have caused problems with the scrolling. When I disabled those Smart Checks the scolling worked much better.

Hello SputnikNYC and welcome to the Forum. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your question but isn't smooth scrolling a mouse or touchpad function? On my laptop I have a Synaptics touchpad and it supports smooth scrolling in Windows 7.

Hi all

I like to work on my Word docs zoomed to 74% so I can see two pages at once, but very annoyingly Word decides that it would be just too easy if I could then use smooth scrolling when dragging the scroll bar! It reverts to a state of me dragging the scroll bar and seeing no change until I release the scroll bar. Very unuseful.

I'm on windows 7 Home premoium 32-bit, in case that matters. And I'm on a laptop so not using a mouse and its scroll wheel, and the scroll on the trackpad isn't working at the moment.

Surely there's a simple answer! But neither Word Help nor google revealed anything.

Cheers one and all

First of all, I'm not sure which forum I should use for this question, so if you're a moderator, please move it to the correct forum if appropriate.

Fortunately, I am able able to engage a form of smooth scrolling by clicking on my scroll wheel (I am a Windows 10 user) . It changes the cursor indicator to show that the "smooth scroll" is now engaged, and to initiate the scrolling I just move the mouse slightly. Acceleration, deceleration, or stoppage of the scrolling is accomplished with the degree of movement of the mouse (not the scroll wheel, in other words).

My neighbor, who also uses Windows 10, does not have this feature when he clicks on his scroll wheel. To see if it was an issue with his mouse I transferred my Logitech mouse and receiver dongle to his computer, but it didn't work either, so the smooth scrolling feature is apparently a software or perhaps a driver feature, but not a mouse hardware issue.

Does anyone know how to engage, enable, install (or whatever the appropriate term is) this form of smooth scrolling on a/any Windows PC?

I didn't find a good answer to that question by Googling it, even though I found one posting on how to engage an experimental feature by Google for the Chrome browser, which both my neighbor and myself use. I would think there's a broader, less specific and risky application available somewhere, somehow, but I haven't found it thus far.

The other view modes are fine but I normally have the enlarge the document and the most practical view mode for that is continuous and smooth scrolling doesn't work in that mode. This is the only app that I have issues with. Is there a registry hack that can help?

Answer:UltraNav Scrolling does not work in Itunes

Add this: ; iTunes*,*,itunes.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9 to the tp4table.dat file under the pass 0 section.  It's located in C:\Program Files\Synaptics.  Do the same for Lightroom, using whatever the .exe file is for Lightroom.

Hello,

I have this problem with my Tecra 9100 that after moving my cursor for a few seconds it 'leaps' to whatever direction I was pointing to. This is very annoying. Aswell as this, when I scroll, it is not smooth at all but like the cursor, it 'leaps'. So when I try scrolling down a page I've gotta be careful because it might just leap to the bottom! Thought I should also mention that dragging Windows is jumpy too.

I am almost certain that these three problems are all related to each other.

Before, my laptop was fine with none of the problems above. This was until error messages saying 'Delayed Write Failed' popped up out of the blue. Such errors I have found to be related to the hardrive not functioning correctly.

Optimisticly, I formated Drive C and put a fresh installation of Windows on to see if this would fix my problem. Surely it would?... Nope. How about I download the MouseWare driver that my laptop came with?... Still doesn't fix the problem.

I've run out of ideas and don't think a software update will fix my problem. I believe it's to do with my hardware (namely speaking, hard disks). I've got 2 hard disks. Coincidently, 'Delayed Write Failed' error messages shows up on both my hard disks.

Please reply, thankyou.

Answer:Tecra 9100: Jumpy cursor and scrolling not smooth.

Yes! I have finally distinguished what is causing my problems! After all the trouble I went through I have just discovered that a Video Card driver update is what fixed it! It's not perfect but atleast I can scroll alot more smoothly! :)

In windows 7 and windows 10 preview this works fine.

I clean installed win 8.1 PRO for testing on my spare rig.

Used IE11 a small amount and smooth scrolling was working.
I Installed all cricitial and reccomended updates via windows update. Included was also a nvidia driver update. Rebooted of course/
Now in IE11 the smooth scrolling is always off, even with the box ticked.

I tried toggling the tick.
Tried using the reset settings option in IE11.
Still no smooth scrolling.
This is a clean install, no 3rd party software, no imported data.
No customisation of the ISO other than to add a EI.CFG to disable the requirement of a key.

Any ideas?

Answer:IE 11, clean install, smooth scrolling doesnt work.

Roll back the driver or get one from the manufacturer's website.

Microsoft drivers have a bad reputation.

edit--- I'm lazy when it comes to driver updates & use a program to find them for me.

So far I have:

*checked the smooth scrolling box in IE & Mozilla
*unchecked the smooth scrolling restarted and rechecked smooth scrolling
*Installed latest drivers for ATI card
*Undated motherboard drivers
*Installed earlier ATI drivers

I have searched forums and the net for a week now and nothing other than those solutions (or re-install windows) have been offered.

Any help would be a miracle!

While smooth scrolling works fine with my Chrome browser when I engage it by pressing down once on my scroll wheel, my neighbor, who is also using Chrome (We both use Windows 10 also), does not get smooth scrolling when you press down on his mouse's scroll wheel. Is that possibly because of his mouse's features /capabilities, a Chrome issue, or something else?

Thanks for looking

Answer:Pressing on scroll wheel does not engage smooth scrolling

Pressing the mouse wheel enables scrolling by moving the mouse (notice the mouse cursor changes). It's a Windows function and should work in all browsers. If it's not enabling, it's most likely a mouse issue. Could be a faulty mouse, or there is mouse software installed and the mouse button has been remapped.

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Although I already reported this as a bug in Chrome , I am pretty confident now that this is a bug in the ElanTech UltraNav driver. Whenever I press Ctrl (and release it) and scroll on a website in Chrome with either the TrackPoint or the Touchpad, Chrome zooms in and out of the page as if Ctrl was still being pressed. This does not happen with a mouse or any other Laptops. To stop this 'zoom mode', I have to switch to another window with Alt-Tab or press Shift once. I already disabled all options in the UltraNav preferences (e.g., zoom function), but the behavior didn't change. Read all the details here: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=254545 . Please acknowledge that this is an UltraNav driver bug to save the guys from the Chrome/Chromium team some trouble. I would really appreciate a fix for this issue as this severely affects my work.My system: L430 2466EW2, Windows 7 x64, UltraNav driver 11.4.15.2, Chrome 29.0.1547.76 and 30.0.1599.65 beta-m. According to the bug report for Chrome this also happens on Windows 8.

As suggested per this bug-report at the Google Chrome forums...
BUG: hitting CTRL while the window is still scrolling zooms it

...I am now posting here as it turns out to be a driver related issue.I am running on a Y580, Win 10, got Lenovo Touchpad drivers installed via Windows Update. This has bugged me for a veeery long time and I finally figured out what causes it.The problem is this:

In any application where I scroll content, the "smooth" scrolling of the touchpad makes the display scroll even after I am done performing scroll gestures. In itself that ain't a bad thing, if only the application wasn't thinking I am still performing the gesture. Well, they all do. And that is a problem, because the second I touch the CTRL key, and I do that often, a ZOOM-EVENT fires and so I am constantly forced to reset the zoomlevel.Note that the current driver ui doesn't give me an option to disable smooth scrolling. In general, on the level of touchpad drivers, there needs to be a clear difference between "user is actually performing a scroll action" and "driver is still busy firing scroll events thanks to some smoothifying algorithmagic".
I now disabled scrolling in the driver settings alltogether and use TwoFingerScroll to do the scrolling; it allows me to set scrolling to "compatible" rather than "smooth". Scrolling now feels a wee more staccato but seeing an end to all the unwanted zooming that ain't a bad thing, at all.~FWIW, apart from some more tou... Answer:Y580 - Problem: leftover momentum of "smooth" touchpad scrolling triggers zooming

I had this same problem when using Google Chrome on my T440s (under both Windows 7 and Windows 10). The continual zooming had been annoying me for months, until yesterday I figured out that I was pressing the control key while there was some still some scrolling momentum. Thankfully in my case the fix is simple: I have turned down the "scrolling intertia" in the Synaptics control panel, and I am no longer experiencing unintentional zooming.

Hello all,

I dislike smooth fonts and want to disable them completely.
I already have done this :

1. Disabled ClearType via Display / Adjust ClearType and unchecking the check box here
2. Disabled font smoothing via System / Advanced parameters / Performances / Parameters / Uncheck "Smooth fonts"
3. Select Tahoma instead of Segoe for all elements inside the advanced parameters for my them.

With this, most of the UI elements are not smooth anymore but some still are. Namely, the taskbar, the window bar, the control panel and even some parts of the basic "open dialog". You can see an example in the attached screenshot.

Is there a way to completely disable smoothing everywhere?
If so, what would you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Like many others here, my Y500 came with a faulty trackpad.  I sent it in for repairs and it seems to be working okay now.  It seems that they installed something new as I am now using the ThinkPad UltraNav pointing device according to my mouse settings. However, I no longer see an option to turn off my trackpad while my USB mouse is plugged in.  I have seen suggestions to hit either fn-f8 or fn-f6 to disable the trackpad manually but these buttons do not appear to do anything for me.  Can anyone tell me how to  disable the trackpad?  I can hardly type because I keep accidentally clicking somewhere else on the screen.

All, I would like to know if there is a way to enable the option to disable the UltraNav touchpad when a USB mouse is connected to the system. My work laptop has this option and it comes in handy. I have tried some registry settings I found on other message boards but they seemed to disable the touchpad alltogether, not just when an external USB mouse was connected. I've run the update utility and am running the latest UltraNav drivers. I haven't tried the basic Synaptics ones from their site yet, but have been sticking with the UltraNav ones provided by Lenovo. Thanks, Andy Harris

X220:  I found out through this forum how to disable the center mouse button on the Ultranav device, but problems still persist because I often hit one of the other buttons when hitting the space bar.   (This is never a problem with the IBM KPD8923 Trackpoint keyboard that I use with my desktop.)  I would like to use an external mouse to avoid these problems, but the Ultranav buttons must be disabled for this solution to work.  I am willing to adapt to any of the following three outcomes:  (1) all three buttons disabled; (2) center and right mouse button both disabled; (3) the entire Ultranav device disabled, but NOT UNINSTALLED.  If I plug in an external mouse, the "disable the selected device" option in Control panel--Mouse--Hardware--Ultranav Pointing Device--Properties--Driver is grayed out.  Is there a solution for my problem?

I did the ultranav update that broke things, and saw Mark's post here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Trackpoint-Ultranav-scrolling-with-middle-b... about updating away from 15.2.14.0. So I updated to 15.2.20.0 and that fixed most of the issues. But I now have a new one. I have a T500 win7 32bit with a docking station. I have a MS intellimouse (one with the wheel) connected to the dock USB port. When I re-dock or boot from scratch in the dock, the mouse works but the wheel does not work. If I unplug and re-plug the mouse, the wheel starts working. It's just when I redock or reboot that the wheel doesn't work. Is Lenovo working on a fix or does anyone know how to go back a few versions? If I use the MS rollback driver option, I'll get 15.2.14 which really didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks!

Although I'm using my X1 Carbon since September 2012 and work with it every day for at least 8 hours, I still can't get used to the Trackpad: the biggest problem is that I accidentally right-click all the time, because when clicking in the lower right corner of the Trackpad, it's a right-click. On a 'normal' Trackpad, this would not be a problem, because there would be some physical divider that would give my fingers feedback on when I've reached the right-click-area... The solution would be to disable the corner click completely since I'm not using it anyway. Unfortunately, the respective "Configure"-button is disabled in my UltraNav tool window.  See the screenshot: Is there any way, I can disable this "corner click" manually? I'm not afraid of hacking the registry or some config files. This is really important for me because the accidental right-clicks start to feel like death by a thousand papercuts... Thanks, Daniel

Answer:Cannot disable corner click in UltraNav on my X1 Carbon

Hi, daniellang

Yes, this behavior can be changed, and you are actually quite close to a solution in this screenshot. The Configure button is grayed out here because there is nothing for the system to configure in this case. If you wished to configure a middle-click action for the corner, then the button would likely become enabled. In this case, however, you need to select Primary Click (Normal Select, Normal Drag) from the list above the Configure button, and then click Apply and OK. This will change the behavior of the corner click to a normal left-click, which effectively disables the issue you are having, I believe, since this will make the entire TouchPad a left-click function with one finger. You can enable the Two-Finger Click to perform a right-click action, which would allow you to have all the functionality of the TouchPad, but all without this issue.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi,

I just found how to completly disable ClearType in 7 : Control Panel / System and Security / System / Advanced system settings / Settings under Performance / Uncheck Smooth edges of screen fonts.

My fonts are easier to read now. Hope this will help someone.

Answer:Windows 7 CRT monitor fonts tips : Disable Smooth edges

Thank you so much for this post, I have literally spent that past 3 hours trying to figure out how to fix this.

If anyone else is having any of the problems below this will most likely fix them, I know its what I was trying to do.

Fix the text in the reading pane of outlook 2007 in incoming messages to be more readable
get rid of calibri or make it more readable
get rid of segoe or make it more readable
reduce general "blurryness" of cleartype fonts
Hopefully anyone out there doing a google search for these topics (like I was) will come upon this page. Thanks again to the OP!

Is there an equivalent hotkey combination to the X220's Fn + F8 for touchpad configuration on the X230T?  I couldn't find one in the User Guide.

X320T running Windows 8.1 Pro x64

Answer:Equivalent to Fn + F8 (enable/disable Synaptics UltraNav) on X230T?

there is no equivalent shortcut, which is one thing that bugs me about the new keyboard, along with the fact that you can't switch power usage state.

Hello there!

I installed Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit several months ago and I'm pretty happy with it, in general. For daily use, I just log in to Windows 8 with my domain account from work ([DOMAINNAME]\[ACCOUNTNAME]). Because of certain domain policies (don't ask me which, I really don't know!) I was unable to install .NET Framework 3.5: Windows would complain that it couldn't find the files and it would cancel the download.
Installing the framework from DVD didn't work, either. Using an account that wasn't on the domain (while keeping my domain account on the computer), didn't work either. So, I followed the tip of a colleague:
1. leave the domain
2. install .NET FX 3.5
3. rejoin the domain.

To be on the safe side, I created a new, local account will full administrator rights so that if something went wrong somewhere, I would still have an accessible system.

Well, the first two steps have worked. The third... not so much. As soon as I moved the domain account to some random work group and rebooted, the account simply wasn't available anymore (like one of those big tiles). I can't log in with it, it's not available in the tab 'Users' when typing 'netplwiz', nor in lusrmgr. I can't log in to an alternate domain anymore, either.

I changed the doman through the 'System Properties' window, in the 'Computer name' tab. I clicked 'Edit...', changed the radio button to 'Work group' and entered some name, rebooted when prompted.

All of the files of the account are there, it's just... Read more

Answer:Restoring previous registry startup

Hello gang, it's snowing outside and the puter has decided to go on strike, well almost. System running W989SE, started up this morning but decided it would carry out scandisk. System stsrted and then displayed "device file missing etc C:\Progr 1\Norton 2\Nisdrv.vxd missing. Press a key.Followed this request, system started and apperaed to work, then reported the registry checker had found a problem and would re-start puter. OK. This reset registry back to whenever, causing changes to dial up numbers etc. Corrected this and tried to uninstall NAV2003, could not run unistall either from control panel or NAV programme file. Re-installed NAV from CD. Still same error message on start up. Unistalled NAV, still same fault on start up.I seem to remember seeing a comment some time ago about being able to restore to a previous date, something about within the last five days. Has anyone got any ideas. Sorry this is along saga, but you all know me, I don't do things by half measures.

If you have a backed up registry prior to your system getting hacked for whatever reason, and you do indeed restore it to said registry, does it get ri of the malware, syware, trojan w/e as well?

Thank you.

Answer:Restoring previous registry after getting hacked?

If the registry backup was a clean copy, and if you can successfully restore it, only the registry would be affected, the files would still be present. They might not have any loading points any longer if the registry restore was successful, but the job would not be complete. Some infections would likely block such efforts to restore registry hives, but it can be done.

Hi,

I have an ASUS model ATHEROS/AR5B22 laptop that originally had Windows 8 and auto-upgraded to Windows 10 at least 6 months ago. I can't remember exactly when, but some time ago.

Now, when I started my computer this morning I have the message "Restoring your previous version of Windows..." message. When I search on Google, it seems this message appears during a failed upgrade, but never months later.

I can't start the computer in any way and can't get into safe mode.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

This may be a little confusing as it's not my own problem, but my parents on the other side of the country.

Basically what happened is my mom needs to use the System Restore after doing who knows what, but the only restore times available are for 10 and 15 minutes ago, which the system created automatically when she tried the restoration originally. Somehow, the restore process (evidently) erased some of her files, and some things from the desktop are missing, like Firefox.

What she needs is a restore point from at least a day ago, but it doesn't show any, and I'm at a loss to help her without seeing the computer for myself (she's kinda technologically illiterate, doesn't have any manually saved restore points or anything like that).

I'm sort of doubting there's a way to do this, but I figured I'd at least ask. Is she SOL? I've rarely had to use SR myself, so I'm a bit green on the issue as well.

I only know it's 7 Home she's running, unfortunately not if it's 32- or 64-bit, if it makes a difference in this case.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer!

Answer:Restoring to a previous point not listed?

Hi! ctroy8, welcome to 7F

When I open system restore mine only shows two restore points.

But, in the lower left corner of the dialog box there is a checkbox to show more points.

Ask your Mother if she has that checked. When I check mine it goes back at least a month.

After doing about 10 failed install attempts and waiting about 2 months I tried the AU again today. It failed again and put back my Version 1511 Build 10586.633 system OK. Rather than take the 7 minutes required to restore the Macrium Reflect boot disk image I made before I tried the update I just deleted all the update files from my boot drive.

And yes, I've tried (repeatedly) all the standard things to fix the update. Looks like I'll be on 1511 until I decide to do a clean install - which may never happen. My 1511 has been running solid as a rock for many months.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" is making a lot of sense to me these days.

The most recent program that was added to my computer was PowerDesk 5.0. Could this have caused the problem?

Help, I'm desperate!!!
