Equal Left & Right Speaker Balance Causes T61 Audio Volume To Go To Zero on Front Audio Jack.

Question: Equal Left & Right Speaker Balance Causes T61 Audio Volume To Go To Zero on Front Audio Jack.

Equal Left & Right Speaker Balance Causes T61 Audio Volume To Go To Zero on Front Audio Jack. -- SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD AudioWhen the left and right sound channels on the T61 sound card are set to be equal, no sound comes out of the front speaker jack for IE8 or Windows Media Player. Shifting the L and R off equal (e.g. Left 20 and Right 30) the sound comes back on. Moving them back toward equal setting slowly decreases the speaker volume until it is gone. I reloaded and reinstalled the SoundMAX driver, but no change. I really didn't notice this until we started with iTunes which definitely notices L and R levels on playback. Setting L = R and, whoops, no sound at all. And, this doesn't happen to the onboard T61 speakers. They work as you would expect the L & R to work. I am setting speaker balance from Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> Levels -> Balance This is really bizarre. BTW, 64-bit Vista Any suggestions? I'd like equal L & R balance AND volume from the front jack. Message Edited by rmyork on 08-14-2009 09:51 AM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I lost stereo through the front speaker audio out jack ( green). This occurred after I did some acoustic recording through the mic input using an acoustic pickup. Now I can only hear right or left on playback depending on how far in the adapter is pushed in.

Answer:Audio out front speaker jack lost stereo.

Since there is both left and right sound at the jack I would suspect that there is a fault with the wiring to the ring of the plug.

I recently discovered a difference in the volume; the left speaker of the laptop has been functioning normally while there seems to be very low to no sound coming from the right speaker.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Audio - Right Speaker has low volume while the left speaker functions normally

Hello. You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test  tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)
Here is how to do a simple driver re-install:
1.    Open the Device Manager.2.    Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" category.3.    Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".4.    Click "uninstall".5.    Do not check the box to “delete the driver software for this device”. 6.    Restart the computer. Windows will detect your device a... Read more

Hi

I have spent many hours researching this and trying several solutions. I have bought brand new leads just in case. The problem seemed to start from nothing!

I use the front jack only, which I plug into my amp with a 'headphone > 2x phono' lead. Now only the left channel gives out sound. If I use the mono button on the amp it comes through both (so I've eliminated the amp being the problem). As I said I bought new leads. Still no good.

It gets worse, because I tried the rear and side jacks and get nothing through my amp. In the audio manager test screen it does give me sound through eaach REAR speaker but when its plugged into the front jack only left.

I've uninstalled the drivers, got new ones and even uninstalled Windows and tried Windows7 and I still get the same issue.

It is the onboard soundcard and I don't know if it is possible that there could be a fault.

Any help would be brilliant, thanks.

Hello & Welcome, moneylife.

If your sound card is on your motherboard, I'd just suggest getting another motherboard since it's most likely a jack malfunction on your sound card.

Try this link for many great deals on sound cards. I've gotten good deals from there, and they don't scam you.

I finished a new build today:

ASUS Z170 Pro-Gaming Motherboard
i5 processor
16 GB DDR4 RAM
etc. etc.
NO SOUND CARD

When I plug my logitech 5.1 Surround speakers into the rear line-out audio jack of the motherboard, it only produces sound in the left speaker (I am only using the front left/right speakers, not the full 5.1 surrount). However, when I plug the same speakers into the front headphone jack of my computer case, both speakers work!

I have tried multiple audio drivers from the ASUS product support website, still doesn't work. I have tried uninstalling all drivers, and allowing Windows 10 to automatically install the driver. This doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

Hello,My problem is this: I have an old  set of speakers such that the left speaker eventually stopped working.
Upon taking it apart, turns out the wire was just pulled away from the solder to the pins.I replaced the wire and it was good as new.
After a few months of use, (once in a while use) the left speaker "stopped" workingI later discovered that it still works, but is very very quiet.Such that, I have to set the right speaker balance to 9% and left to 100% to get the same volume from both speakers.I took it apart today, re-glued the wires back to the pins, no difference.
So I am wondering, with Dell Audio client, and my Dell xps 8700, which has a front and back 3.5mm audio jacks, can I set the balance to the front port to be my 100/9 for the speakers, and 100/100 for the back which connects to my headphones?
I took a look in the audio client, but it looks like no such option exists.Do I go looking for a new set of speakers or is there an easy option here?

Answer:Can you change the balance output on a specific audio jack output with Dell Audio?

I believe both jacks are controlled and connected to the same ports and software so directing one to do one thing and another to do something different isn't possible as far as I know.  Maybe someone will have a different answer, but I don't think Dell's software is advanced enough.

Hello BleepingComputer

I just upgraded my computer a few days ago, and I am having problems with the Front Jack Audio/Headphone.

Normally, I set my Headphone to run simultaneous with my Speaker with Realtek HD audi/Stereo Nix (Disable Front Jack Detection and vice versa), and I could change the volume on both devices separately.
But since I changed the motherboard, when I have realtek installed, it doesn't have the Headphone setting in Sound/Playback.
The headphone work perfectly, but its linked to the Speaker's volume, which is really annoying.
Also, the Realtek layout changed from the last one I got, and doesn't have the "Disable Front Jack Detection" option.
(Picture: http://i903.photobucket.com/albums/ac232/notyellowasian11/Untitled-1_zps2242cdba.jpg)

So far, I have tired..
Installing an older version of Realtek driver;
Changing the audio setting in the BIOs (HD or AC97)
Changing the audio connector on the MOBO (Hd or AC97)
Tried multiple compinations with Realtek HD audio manager settings.
Cleaned every plugs/jacks related on that.

So far, I couldn't been able to get the Headphone tag at all when Realtek is installed.

Thanks !

Hi all

When I plug in my headphones on my laptop (Satellite L850-147) and try to listen to music, I hear only music (the instrumental parts) .. from far away, I can hear the singer's voice.

I found a turnaround by putting the balance setting in realtek audio HD manager to 100% left or 100% right...
But it's not the way music have to be played...

I reinstalled the Realtek Audio HD manager but no sucess...
Any idea?

I'm not sure if it's a problem with my drivers or if my speakers are just broken. They were just kinda cheap ones I picked up at best buy, here's the model:

Insignia?„? - Powered Computer Speakers with Subwoofer (3-Piece) - Black/Silver/Gray - NS-PSD5321 | Insignia

Theyre unique because there's a central "pod" (you see in the picture) that plugs into the audio jack on my PC (it's also the power/volume control). I can plug headphones into that hub to switch the sound to headphones. From a the hub, a cord goes to the subwoofer. The Left and Right speakers connect into a single jack in the subwoofer.

My computer is acting like both my Left and Right speakers are JUST the right speaker. When I turn down the Right sound balance, both speakers get quieter. When I turn up the Left balance, the Subwoofer gets louder.

However, the sound balance when I use HEADPHONES is still just fine. It uses my left and right "speakers" correctly.

Are the speakers just broken? Or is it possible that my driver is confusing the speakers somehow? I googled and couldn't find anyone else with this issue.

When the balance is centered in volume control, I can hear the music part of an mp3 but the vocals/lyrics are low. Lyrics can be heard if the balance is only right or only left.

Also, the sound comes out of both speakers. Even when I alter the balance to play right or left only.

Ok, i have an Alienware x51 and the front headphone audio jack has stopped working. I will admit that i tried messing around with the settings on my computer to solve an issue with sound in a game but, this made it worse.
When i plug in my headphones and do an audio test with Realtek i can hear the sound but it is so low that i have to make the whole room silent to hear it. This also happens with my speakers too and any other device.
If it is a problem with the audio jack and not something to do with settings can i follow up on my warranty? Or does this not come under it?
I really need help because i am now forced to use the normal sound coming out of my monitor and it is very bad quality. Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

sogone209,
My first thought is to have you make and unmake the connection into that front plug many times and even hit it with air or better yet to use a little contact enhancer on the pin and make and unmake the connection. What happens is if the connections are barely being made then noise and interference can make it's ugly and noisy presence known.

Hello all,

I just bought a new computer off of a friend (who built it 3 months ago) and have been playing around with it and setting everything up. Everything is going well except I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with my front audio jack. I asked my friend about it and he said that it was perfectly fine before (i trust his word) so I don't think it's an issue regarding the actual building of the computer.

Here are the specs:

Windows 10 OS
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H
Heatsink: be quiet! Shadow Rock 2
RAM: 8GB ADATA DDR3-1600
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
GPU: EVGA NVIDIA GTX 980TI FTW ACX 2.0+
Case: Fractal Design Define S
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA P2 650W PSU 80+ Platinum
After purchasing the PC, I reformatted it and downloaded all the drivers for the motherboard and graphic card. The problem I'm facing is when I plug in my headset (Razer Kraken Pro) into the front jack, the sound is fine and everything but when I start using programs, for example: starting Overwatch, there will be a lot of buzzing and static noise in the background. I tried the exact same headset and plugged it into the rear jack and the static was completely gone. Similarly, I tried using my apple headphones into the front jack. This time, the sound was extremely off. Like I could hear the BGM but voices and stuff were barely audible. When i plug it in the rear, the sound quality was fine.

Answer:Front Jack Audio Issue

You should check the audio connectors at the motherboard end, there could be a poor contact, audio should use shielded cable which depends on a good earth/ground connection to work.

If that doesn't help chances are that wiring is picking up interference, if so you will have to use the rear connectors.

Hello, Last month I built my own computer. I am having a problem with my Front I/O audio jacks.

- Headset is Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD

- I have went into BIOS and enabled my Front I/O

- My front I/O is properly connected to my Motherboard

- My driver is Realtek HD R267 (Newest driver)

I have looked up this problem for quite some time but can't find a way to fix it. People have said to go into Realtek Audio HD Manager and click on the folder next to analog and untick disable front detection. I don't have this folder.

Any help is appreciated i'm 16, this is my first computer build myself. If you need anymore details just ask me below.

Hi there,

Hope you guys can help me out - I'm at my wits end.

I found similar thread about this here but unfortunately the troubleshooting didn't help.

So, my Front Audio jack is disabled and not sure what happened. The front audio mic has no issues

My Sound Card is the Conexant HD Smartaudio 221

Yes, I tried looking at Device manager and the only thing that pops up is that (Conexant) under sound.

I also tried right clicking the speaker icon on my desktop tray but it didn't let me enable the audio jack. not sure why.

I tried downloading the realtek ac97 for vista (saw something else online about this) but that didn't work either. The thing couldn't be installed in my laptop for some reason.

Any help would be so much appreciated - thanks in advance you guys.

Hello, I recently built a new PC and have been very happy with it's performance. But the only problem is my front audio jack doesn't want to work! I have the standard 6 jack audio on the rear of my computer's case, which seems to work fine with some speakers I'm using. But when I try to plug in headphones on the front of my case, none of the headphone devices will work!

The speakers attached to the rear panel will continue to operate when headphones are plugged into the front. But the headphones should be taking sound priority from the speakers when plugged into the front, if I'm not mistaken.

The cases front panel connections are indeed properly attached to the motherboard, so nothing in terms of hardware should be wrong with the front audio jack. I believe it's something I may have to configure using Windows Control Panel, etc. But here's a link to my case anways:

Heya all. I'm only new to these forums so just bear with me.

A month or two ago I had a new motherboard put in, I used to have a Gigabyte K8 mobo but now I have a Jetway mobo. I have front audio and mic jacks on my tower, but the problem is ever since I had this new motherboard put in it hasn't worked. Both mobo's had AC97 audio, but the Gigabyte mobo had a different brand I think, whereas this Jetway's onboard is Realtek AC97. I've tried different drivers, and still no go. But when I take the green speaker plug out the back of the tower and plug it into the front green jack, you can hear like the sound scratching as I put it in but there just isn't any sound when its in. Same happens with my headphones. The main reason I would like to get it working is so I can easily just plug my headphones in it like I used to and just turn the speakers off, but now I can't because I'm not getting any audio from the front jack what so ever ever since I got this new mobo. I hope somebody can help me with this issue. Thanks!

I recently got a new computer with Vista Home Premium x64, and it is working great except that my front audio jack is not working properly. I wasn't the one who assembled the computer, but I know it is connected correctly because when I right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select playback devices>headphones>properties>enhancements and click "preview" it plays out of the front audio jack perfectly. However, it does not work with any of my applications.

Is there some setting I have to change to switch from between the speakers and headphones in Vista? Is this likely a driver issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Full specs are listed above.

Answer:Solved: Front audio jack not working

Have a look at Device Manager/Sound-Video-Game Controller.

Right click items shown, then check for –Enable, update driver or roll back.
Also check - Other devices, if listed.

Not quite sure of your total system connection set-up?? Have you two audio outputs?
Speakers - rear connection, headphones - front connection.

Utilising both outputs may disengage or mute one of jack sockets.

Does anyone know of a generic replacement AC'97 audio cable and front 3.5mm front port replacement kit available? In this particular pc, the audio cable that connects from the audio header on the mobo to the front 3.5mm jack has been damaged badly (it touched a hot soldering gun). I wouldn't mind replacing the front jack anyway since I have to wiggle the plug in it to get any sound. Needless to say, because of the damaged cable, the sound output is scratchy and very weak.

Any sort of generic replacement would do since I don't care about drilling a hole on the front of the case on this pc case if I have to to accomodate a new jack. I've looked for hours but can't find anything.

I have a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 motherboard with on-board sound by Realtek, and my case is Thermaltake's "Element G".

I connected the front panel audio cable to the designated connection on the motherboard, however, whenever I plug-in my headphones, the stereo is reversed! Meaning that the headphone for the Right ear is playing the audio channel for the Left ear, and vice versa.

I end up having to wear my headphones in reverse to enjoy correct stereo sound.

I checked the front panel audio connection to the motherboard, thinking that maybe I plugged it in the wrong way or something, but apparently there is only one way to plug it in.

My first guess was that this was a design flaw with the case, and that they mixed up the audio channel connections in the front panel. However, when I plugged my headphones DIRECTLY to the REAR audio jack, it's exactly the same story!

The fact of the matter is that the on-board audio is mixing up the stereo channels! I actually remember that on my previous computer with on-board audio it was the same exact problem.

1) Is this a known issue with on-board sound cards in general?

2) Most importantly, is there any way I can fix this in Windows 7? Reverse the stereo channels so that they are outputted correctly?

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Front audio headphone jack reversed stereo...

Never mind. I tried a different pair of headphones and there was no problem. Apparently my cheap "Sony" headphones were just defective.

HiI've recently upgraded to windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers, those it seems that Realtek's "features" are more counter-productive than it's worth. All I want is to have both my speakers and headphone plugged in (via rear and front panel phonejack) at the same time, and get the same audio feed from both (so if i ever need privacy, all i need is to turn off speakers and put on headphones)though it seems that the Realtek driver forces one of them to be "default device", where all the sounds would go to one or the other (depending on which is default)this really sucks, how is it helpful to have a secondary device if nothing plays through it??Is there a way to duplicate the main speaker audio feed to the headphones, at all?(my Realtek is the onboard sound device, on my P5Q pro motherboard, if it helps)

Answer:play same audio feed from front and rear jack

though it seems that the Realtek driver forces one of them to be "default device", where all the sounds would go to one or the other (depending on which is default)this really sucksYou Motherboard is set to only use oneWindows through PnP will respond by disabling the rear plug when the front plug is plugged in (I think I have that right)Anyway, Realtek is not doing it.You can only have one, unless you split the wires and run two from oneI think there was another way as well, but I can't remember this second

Hello, I'm Artekis. A year ago, sevenforums helped solved my BSOD problem! Now I'm back for help on audio problems.

I recently noticed that the front audio ports of my Windows 7 PC do not work properly. I plugged in both speakers and my headset, and the right side of the speakers do not work as well as the right side of the headset cups.

The back audio ports work perfectly fine for both my headset and speakers. As a result, I can safely say that it's a problem with my front audio ports.

According to the Sound tab, I have VIA HD Audio, which is integrated audio on my ASUS motherboard. There also seems to be NVIDIA High Definition Audio in the sound controllers section of the device manager. According to some people on Sevenforums, it's used if you want to use a HDMI cable to connect audio from my PC to the TV? Is this correct?

So what should I do to get my front audio ports to work? I will gladly provide any information that can help solve my problem.

Thanks,
-Artekis

Edit: Just a little update, but the front audio panel worked perfectly fine from both cups of my headset for a couple of seconds after I restarted my computer. But it quickly switched back to the left cup working only. However, the mic jack in the front doesn't work at all.

Answer:Front Audio Jack, right sided speakers/cup not working

Check the front panel connection on the motherboard. Reseat the connection (unplug and then plug back in).
The front panel headphone jack may have developed a problem, which is not uncommon.

Hi
!'ve got a probelm with my compaq 615
i had a problem with my audio quitting on me after the laptop went to sleep (which required a reboot) so i reinstalled the drivers (IDT HD)
now my laptop speakers are set as the default audio device and my headphone jack is set as the default communications device .. what kind of nonsense is that..
anywho.. all efforts trying to tell the pc i want the headphones as default speakers were in vain... it won't change any settings
simply disabling the speakers isn't a real solution either because i would still like to be able to use the media keys on my keyboard to adjust the volume.. i can't use them on a device that isn't the default however
i tried reinstalling the drivers aswell with no results

does anyone know what could help?

Answer:can't set front jack as default audio output (notebook)

no ideas?

Hi all,

I've just installed Windows 7 and was very happy to see all the hardware working, even my Realtek HD Audio sound card, except the front jacks.

On windows XP I could solve this by with the Sound Manager that comes with the realtek drivers, and select the "Disable front panel jack detection" check box. Unfortunately, after installing the Vista drivers, I could not start he Sound Manager app beause it said it worked only on Windows Vista.

So, if someone knows a way I could start the manager or how I could set the "Disable front panel jack detection" by modifying the registry, or ofcourse, any other way to make the front jacks work, please help.

Thanks

Answer:Front jack not working for Realtek HD Audio on Windows 7

I installed it and run it as is and have no problems, everything's working. I don't have to run in compatibility mode or anything. Maybe uninstall it and reinstall

Hi, Omarattia  ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

Hey everyone, I have a X200 with a build in Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD. Driver Version is 4.92.12.0. The Computer doesn't switch any more between the build in speaker and the audio jack. I do have a signal on the jack, but the speaker doesn't work. If I have plug my headphones to the audio jack, I can hear the sound properly and the green bars in the Control Panel / Sound / Playback menu indicate that there is indeed sound. However, if I don't have a plug in the audio jack, these green bars stay dead. Does anyone have any idea, how I can fix this? Any hint or help is greatly appreciated. Best regards,Tao

I'd appreciate any suggestions too. I often have similar issues especially when using Skype.

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

(Ubuntu 9.04)
There were one or two threads about this in the Ubuntu forums, but they did not have suitable answers.
Sound, no matter from what source (VLC, Flashplayer, Rhythmbox, etc) is only playing from the left speaker. It has not always been like this, and I am nearly certain that it is not a hardware problem because this also happens when I try headphones, and both the speakers and headphones work when I use them playing music from my phone.
When I go into the audio settings and turn down left channel for PCM and Front all the way, audio still plays, very quietly, from the left speaker. Upon very close listening on headphones, there is actually barely audible sound coming from the right (obviously this is not good enough, lol).
Any help is appreciated.
(This is the first time I've ever been to this site or these forums, so if I'm doing anything wrong or if I posted this in the wrong section, sorry and feel free to tell me.)

Hi,

Just bought a new set of desktop speakers.

The volume and tone controls are on the right-side speaker.

As I use my mouse, right handed, and the volume control more or less together for some work, this is a bit of a pain.

I can, of course, just move the speakers, but my son objects; for some videos and games, I guess it is important to have right-right, and left-left.

I have the Creative/Soundblaster audio setup.

If I do interchange the speakers to the way I like, is there any option, anywhere,
where I can have the left channel sound now going to the right speaker, and the right channel sound going to the left speaker ?

Creative, and the MS Audio options doesn't seem to have a way.
I don't want to re-wire any plugs.

Any simple way of accomplishing this ?

Thanks,
Bob

I know exactly what you mean. On my media PC the on board audio was backwards so I reversed the connections so it sounded correct. I then put in a Audigity 2 and that was wired correctly.
The only suggestion I have is to check out an electronics store or Amazon for a couple of cables so you can reverse the wiring.
https://www.google.com/shopping/prod...d=0CIABEPMCMAA
and then one of these if your speaker system has a socket on it, if not search for a cable with a socket on it.

Hello

Since I purchased PC few years back, my front audio jack was not working. Today I decided to fix the issue instead of purchasing a new headphone (I'll use mobile headset :P ).

I'm using Windows 7, my motherboard name is Gigabyte GA MA78gm S2H. When I saw a video in youtube and read mb's matual, I found that there is something called F_Audio. I checked my MB, there was nothing plugged in that port.

I've four wires coming out from front side i.e HDD led, power led, reset and Speaker. I've connected those wire properly. Which wire should I connect to f_audio ? There is no wire left to connect I think the front jack is not working due to the missing cable. My rear audio jack is working properly.

Please help

Thank you

Answer:Front audio jack issue, F_Audio port query

You should have a cable (or cables) coming from the front panel for audio. One connector will be marked HD Audio (what is needed for current audio systems) and the other is AC97 which is for older audio systems.

Check around, if you don't see them as they may be stuffed somewhere in the front of the case.

Everything worked fine until a couple of days ago. Now, streaming audio does not come out of the front jack. Rear jack is fine.  If I disable the Digital Output, sound DOES come from the front audio jack (so no hardware issue). BUT keyboard volume buttons do not work. In that mode, volume must be adjusted by opening the appropriate window and using the mouse. I can't seem to make the front jack the Default Device. I do not know of anything I did to preciptate this. No new software, nothing. Just came back from vacation and that's the way it was. Thanks in advance. ~LMG1

MODS: I post this thread to isolate the most important problem from my previous thread and to make it clearer and easier to answer. I hope that's alright.

I have this on onboard Realtek HD audio card. And no matter if I connect the AC'97 or HD audio adapter to the motherboard, the sound that comes out of the frontjack is cracking. I have no phones or anything the like near my pc, the speakers are turned off and I reinstalled the drivers. Still I have this sound. Any suggestions how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Realtek HD audio - Front jack makes cracking sound

If you really want a better sound output, check if your speaker or headset are plugged tightly.

But you can also lower the sound quality in the settings but this can eliminate the crackling sound. First, close the programs where sound comes out such as media players. Believe me, I had this problem on Realtek in Windows 7 too but I lowered the sound quality to 16 bits 44100 Hz, CD quality and the crackling sound was gone. I posted a screenshot. After you are done with that, refresh the desktop and play an MP3 file and hear if the sound got any better.

But if you really want some better sound, you need to buy a sound card that is fully compatible with Windows 7.

I am running on a Dell Latitude D630. Just recently my audio jack isnt wanting to understand that my headphones are plugged in. I know that my headphones work cause when I would play them on my iPod they would work perfectly fine. I went into my drivers and uninstalled then reinstalled the audio drivers. I looked for other solutions online and there were none that fit to what I was looking for. the only sound that comes out of the computer are the stock "High Definition Audio Device" speakers.

At this moment I have plugged in 3 sets of headphones and none have been able to get sound out of the audio jack. They are all the simple 3.5mm plugs and I have used them numbers of times when making music on FL Studio or listening to music on Spotify. I know that there has to be a solution because there has never been a problem like this before.

Thank you for any help that you can give me

If you are not using the Dell supplied sound drivers that can be a problem. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forum and we found that non-Dell drivers either did not work or did not work properly on many Dell's.

Dear all,

I have been reading 1000s of posts on the net for 5.1 Channel speakers giving outputs only through the front left and right speakers. Well, I am no exception

- Connected all the cables correctly to the respective jacks... but still...
- Tried atleast 5 different of HD Audio Drivers (including the latest by the onboard device maker VIA - v10_1200a, as well as the Microsoft generic HD Audio driver)... Installed, Completely wiped, Reinstalled, all possible combinations... but still...
- Tried adding the Sound Blaster 5.1 Channel PCI Card (SB 5.1 VX)... but still...
- Tweaked all possible 'Playback Devices' options... but still...
- Tried different 5.1 Channel testing audio files... but still...

But still still my speakers (brand new iBall MJ04 - iBall's latest model) doesn't play 5.1 Channel Audio

Following is my system specifications:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 @ 2.66GHz
Package (platform ID) - Socket 775 LGA
Mainboard Model - P5KPL-CM
Northbridge - Intel P35/G33/G31 rev. A2
Southbridge - Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) rev. A1
Onboard Audio - VIA VT 1708B, 8-CH High Definition Audio
Memory Type - DDR2
Memory Size - 4096 MBytes
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit)

Though this board supports 8 Channel audio, even 5 Channel is not being played.... when an audio file or video file is played, all speakers flare up.... playing the audio is all speakers... this is NOT 5.1 channel audio... this is just 'Speaker Fill'.... playing the same sound in all the 5 speakers.... tr... Answer:5.1 Channel Audio - Sound only from Front Left and Right Speakers

I assume you are using something like this,

or similar cables to connect from the 6 RCA input jacks on the system to the 3 mini jacks on the computer (one each for the front left/right, sub/center and rear left/right).

Also is the audio you are trying to play stereo or 5.1? If it is only stereo then it requires using speaker fill to get sound from all speakers.

I am fairly new with W7 so please excuse my inexperience with this.

I have headphones connected to front headphone jack (Dell Inspiron 560 W7 Home 64). I want to have cable connected to rear jack (for speakers in other room). I can't get audio from the rear if anything is connected to the front jack. I do get about one second with the rear pink jack and the yellow jack - but not the green jack - but after one second it stops.

The sound card is RealTek High Definition Audio, driver from 10/09 Vers 6.0.1.5963.

Note that when making a similar connection to my XP machine the RealTek card/jacks do play in both front and rear at the same time.

I have attached screenshots of the Control Panel ->RealTek image (annotated with mouseover text) and the Volume->Properties image.

Answer:Can't get Rear Audio jacks to work While cable connected to front jack

I do a lot of support on the Dell users forum. Dell uses a custom implementation of the RealTek audio, only the Dell RealTek audio drivers will work or work properly. Some models of the RealTek audio chip have the capability to do what you want and some do not, on others it's up to the PC/Motherboard vendor whether to implement certain functions or not. It may be possible but I don't recall seeing any posts on the Dell forum about this particular item.

Usually, the default setup is to mute the rear connected speakers when a headphone (or whatever) is plugged into the front headphone jack.

Here is the Dell on-line manuals for the 560/570 models

Hello all,

I rercently came with the following problem without any reason:

I have a realtek audio chipset with my mother board.

Since some time, the HD audio drivers keeps on detecting/undetecting a device plugged in my front jack (resulting is sound cutoff, which is more than annoying). But, there is nothing plugged.

If I plug something then, the detection works right.

I'm wondering if it is a software problem, or if there is something wrong with my motherboard or my front jack connector (some kind of shortcut or whatever).

If someone as a solution I would really appreciate.

Thanks a lot in advance !

I cannot uncheck the "reload" option in the realtek driver because I need to have this detection working right.

Answer:Realtek HD Audio Drivers - Constantly detecting/undetecting front jack

Sounds like a loose or defective jack. No software will "fix" broken hardware. When nothing is in the jack, it's grounded and the chipset ignores or turns off the jack. When you plug something into it, the open ground signals the chipset to detect a device and notify Windows of it's presents. Windows (driver) will then allow you task the jack as necessary.

You don't give any info on your system but some manufactures have spare parts available. Most front panel assemblies are replaceable. Also make sure the front panel connections aren't loose at the motherboard. Be sure to completely power-down the PC and un-plug the power cord before checking wires inside.

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.

Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

You have connected the notebook to your HiFi equipment using the headphone jack?
Is this correct?

In such case you should change the HiFi settings (equalizer, etc?)

Additionally you should check the preinstalled software called TOSHIBA Audio Enhancement Utility.
The Toshiba Audio Enhancement application was designed in order to provide you with a highly improved audio experience when listening e.g. your preferred music tracks.

I listen to music through ear buds all day at work. Most of the time I just use my phone, but sometimes (like the past few days) the Verizon network is working like crap and I am forced to use my PC. I like my music loud. Loud enough to drown out ambient BS around me. The PC audio just doesn't go up that loud. Is there any way you know of to increase it beyond what it is now? I'm looking for something pretty simple that wouldn't require software installation or anything.

Answer:Increasing volume to audio out jack

Is this for online streaming radio, or for locally-saved music files?

Either way...you're pretty much gonna have to have additional software.

Either some kind of EQ program or something like VLC Player which allows up to a 200% volume level.

I just got my new laptop with Windows 8.1 a few days ago and everything worked fine until now. When I plug in my earbuds, only the left earbud works. I've tried nearly everything I found online but to no avail. I've tried reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio drivers and system restoring to the earliest point, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Also the speakers seem to work correctly, its just when I have earbuds in.

Answer:Only left earbud works when inside audio jack

In the properties a lot of time there is a balance setting in the sound menu somewhere, maybe it got changed? Maybe the headphone port is bad? If there is dust or something in it that is blocking the top, maybe bottom ring (one ring is right headphone one is left I can't remember which is which) from making contact.

You were referring to the laptops speakers and not external ones correct?

The problem seems to be with the hardware.. I am not sure how to fix this. Can anyone help me out with this?  Thanks,Sohan

Answer:G470 - Left channel of audio jack not working.

I don't know if this caused it, but I tried opening a .m4b file with foobar and it didn't work, but I heard some pops. This was without anything in the audio jack, so I was using the speakers. Then I plugged some headphones in to listen to something else, and I noticed no sound from the left channel. I tried reinstalling the audio driver without effect. The headphones aren't faulty because they work normally on my phone. The speakers play audio just fine; with sound coming from both of them. I don't have a warranty. What are my options?

I have put this in the virus section rather than hardware because this problem has appeared on my friends computer too. Actually his was first to have the problem. He thought it was his headphones and bought a new pair still nothing doing. I thought it was his system because he had dropped it, but then my system now is experiencing the same symptoms. I have tried a speaker test without headphones and the built in speakers play both channels properly it is only through the audio jack that this problem occurs. It plays the left channel normally and the right channel lower and through the left side also. I have tried a safe mode system restore and reinstalling the audio drivers. The other symptom that I am experiencing is with the WPD driver regarding my external USB 2.0 card reader not reading cards. I had the same thing with the built in SD card reader too but fixed it with a driver reinstall, but I can not find a download to reinstall the WPD and uninstalling then reinstalling does not work. The error is code 10 device cannot start.

Both are ASUS laptops his a K53T mine a X53U. I am assuming it is a virus and not a buggy windows update that is causing this. Please let me know what you need from myself in order to help me fix this problem like a Hijack log and anything else that you need. Thanks. If I should try asking in hardware first please let me know too. Thanks and have a great day.

Answer:Audio Jack plays both channels via Left side only

Also all my restore points except the one that was created for the SD card reader were gone too.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I suppose like a lot of forum newbees, I found this site and registered because I have a problem.

I'm getting a very very low volume out of the right channel/speaker. This issue started with a hard drive problem where my MBR and Partition Table was corrupted. I got a new hard drive, ghosted a saved winxp system partition image onto the drive and I was ready to go, except my right speaker volume was extremely low.

Some other info is that my left speaker had gone out a while back but the right continued to work fine. This was a definitely a speaker problem. After the hard drive problem that right speaker volume was very low even at max volume and it had been fine before. I was suspecting a driver issue, but my ghost image should have had the correct drivers.

I loaded the most recent Realtek AC'97 drivers, but no change. I had been wanting to get new speakers anyway so I bought some Logitech Z-10 speakers with both standard and USB connections. I thought that maybe my problem was the onboard integrated audio and my perception was that USB would bypass that integrated audio, so I thought maybe that if it was an integrated audio then the USB would work. Well no luck the left channels is great and the right channel sucks with both the USB and traditional plug, and I know the speakers are fine because they sound great connected to my laptop.

So back to the drawing board. I thought about getting a sound card, but if ... Read more

Try doing an XP repair. You can find out how to do it here:

I don't trust Ghost images at all... Acronis Home is much more reliable. Good luck

Hi,I have a HP-Pavilion m7-1015dx. It's 5 yrs old. My speakers were working just fine when suddenly I saw that the beats audio left speaker suddenly started crackling. I then checked and I found out that when I increased the bass in the beats audio control panel, the crackling increased. I tried troubleshooting and disabling and enabling the audio driver but nothing happened. What should I do?P.S. The right speaker is working just fine.

I have realtek ALC898, part of gigabyte Z77 UD5h mobo, windows 7 ultimate 64bit. Rear jack speakers always work, sound always works. But after sleep, the front panel audio jack does not work, ie headphones silent.

Workaround 1) go to device manager, disable realtek high definition audio, then enable it, then front panel audio jack works properly.
workaround 2) restart the computer and it works again.

I tried disabling sleep and using hibernate, since I read somewhere that hibernate is like a restart, but apparently it is not. Using hibernate, once it resumes from hibernate, front jack still doesnt work just like using sleep mode.

It sounds like resuming from sleep mode or hibernate mode, that windows 7 is failing to reinitialize some of the realtek audio drivers, at least those associated with front panel audio jack for headphones. So have to restart or disable/enable realtek high def audio in device manager. I have most recent realtek drivers, tried both from realtek, and most recent from Gigabyte, both have same issue. My windows 7 is fully up to date.

Any other suggestions for a permanent fix? Am I right in this is just failure of 7 to reinitialize some drivers?

Answer:front panel audio jack doesnt work after sleep mode until restart

Hi, I believe you are quite right about the driver(s) not reinitializing, it's quite common but failing a driver update I don't know what you can do about it.
Personally I would put a splitter on the audio out line and use that.

Hey, everyone! I am having a problem with my audio jack:1. First of all my laptop doesn't seem to acknowledge when I put my headphones/external speakers in the jack... no notification or reaction from the Laptop.2. Second- only left headphone is working. Other than that the laptop speakers are good, the only problem is with the jack. What I've done is to reset my PC, to return it to it's factory settings... but no change! Still the same problem!Laptop is new.. less than 3 months..  I am desperate... I really hope there's something I can do and you could help me with that! I really don't think it''s a hardware problem.. I have taken good care of the machine, no troubles.Thank you!

I have had a 5.1 speaker arrangement on my Vista x64 PC for some time. Today, the front left speaker decided to stop working correctly. When trying to plug my headphones in to a rear jack on my motherboard (onboard sound), I noticed that sound was only coming through the right earphone. I decided to give up with trying to listen through my headphones for the time being and plugged my speakers back in, only to find that now my front left speaker wasn't working correctly. I tried to adjust the balance on my speakers, as I thought I could hear a whisper of a sound through the front left.
The front left speaker is producing sound, but at a greatly reduced volume to the rest of the speakers, I have to set the balance to the following to make FL and FR speakers 'the same' volume (by ear).
FL volume: 100
FR volume: 0
I have my speakers plugged in to 3 jacks on my motherboard (out of 6).
The green jack for FL and FR.The black jack for RL and RR.The orange jack for C and SubW.I have been unsucessful installing Realtek (which is a shame, because on my last motherboard I was able to solve the problem with that somehow, but I can't remember how) as it states the drivers are not supported. Which I'm assuming means my motherboard doesn't support it.
My motherboard is an MSI Intel p35 Neo.
I have had this setup working fine for around a month. My speakers are labtec (but I don't see how that would matter).I am currently using the normal drivers that come with Vista.Any ideas?

My speaker setup seems to make windows think that all my speakers are 'left'. I dont mind that it does, but the problem is that i will be missing out on all the action coming out of the sopposed 'right' speaker.

The Volume balance control sliders that you can access from Sound > Speaker Properties > Levels > Balance only control the volumes that each individual speaker has.

Is there a slider, windows function or program that can shift both the output from the left and right speakers, to the left speaker, so that nothing will be missed .

Many thanks,
SuperStinger

Answer:Windows 7 balance needed, NOT volume control for each speaker

More system specs are needed. e.g. what is the PC/Model Number or if a custom the motherboard. Also what sound do you have? such as RealTek, Conexant, SoundBlaster, etc.

Hi,Not sure if this is the right section.I had a old Hi-Fi radio woofer, please look at the attachment.I would like to use the speaker with my desktop, as you know behind the desktop only had 1 jack which is not compatible with my woofer cables. I need to know what universal jack i can use to solve my problem, where to buy it online, or recommend me something.I did try to find it in eBay but i don't know which one should i get.[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

Answer:Looking for Hifi Radio audio jack compatible with my desktop audio jack

I would buy or use a stereo or amp with audio input, and drive the woofer(s) speakers etc through that. You will need a stereo phono male jack to another male stereo phono jack or a stereo phono male jack to RCA male usually red and white for left and right sound.Your computer can not drive these directly without killing the soundcard which may be integrated to the computer. If you do get any sound and drive it with sound card directly the sound will probably be a anything from nothing heard to a whisper of sound.Definately drive them with an amp or stereo that has aux audio input.  http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=96T7442&CMP=KNC-GPLA&mckv=|pcrid|27090073821|plid|or this onehttp://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?seq=1&format=2&p_id=4792&CAWELAID=1329450515&catargetid=320013720000011015&cadevice=c&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CKuFjrDu5LkCFSU6QgodPjQAlADepending on the amp or stereo used to drive the speaker/woofer(s) you may need to add RCA plugs to the end of the stripped wire if they are not quick release like these appear to have come from and make sure you have correct polarity to avoid damage.*** Once when my sound system died, I simply plugged my computers audio output to the aux audio input of a large 1980s boom box and used that for sound and it worked quite well. Could even record stuff to tape..lol

no error messages appear.when i plug my headphones in it makes a sound indicating it is plugged in then for about 10 to 15 minutes afterwards the sound repeats itself despite nothing being changed or unplugged. no difference in effect whether something is already playing or not. ran through all diagnostics, troubleshooting, updates etc and it still freezes the task bar, unresponsive to mouse or screen touch and the physical volume buttons dont respond. the same thing happens when I unplug the headphones. after 15 minutes it seems to work as normal. so annoying, whats going on?

Pretty much as the title states. I very recently bought a Yoga 720 15 and whenever I plug in headphones I only get sound from the left bud (headphones work fine with other devices). When I tried troubleshooting I realised that Windows 10 is not recognising the headphones, as only the speakers appear in the audio manager. I tried updating both the Realtek audio drivers in the Audio Inputs and Outputs and Sound, video and game controllers headings in the device manager but it made no difference. I've also tried adjusting volume settings, such as panning etc. and when I pan everything to the right I'm getting nothing through the bud (whereas I get it all loud and clear when panned to the left). Do people think this is a software or hardware fault? As far as the two are related, speakers otherwise work fine, I'm only having issues when using headphones.  Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Problems with audio jack - windows 10 not recgonising device and only sound from left bud

UPDATE: So I've figured out that by fiddling with the input jack and having the headphones only in a certain amount I can get sound coming through both left and right, but the sound is like I'm in a swimming pool. I guess it's a faulty headphone jack then. I've only had the laptop for three days so it'll be getting sent back!

You're only going to get so much volume out of a pair of laptop speakers. Plug in a set of desktop speakers to the headphone jack & you'll get all the volume you desire.

Went through the audio test for left and right channel output on youtube and tried to windows test option in playback devices windows 10,still everytime even if the animation says it playing through left and right speakers separately i still get audio from the left speaker both times. Is there some setting i am missing out on or is it a hardware issue.please help

Answer:Audio playing through left speaker only on dell inspiron 7567 laptop

sandy5837Is there some setting i am missing out on or is it a hardware issue.
Hello. This is the audio hardware test for the laptop's internal audio hardware. It works differently from the other tests. If no sound is heard through the laptop's right speaker during that test, then the cause is hardware failure. If it passes, then it's software.
If it is software, then download and install a fresh copy of the audio driver. Get it from your model's support page, or I can give you a link. Installing a fresh copy will re-set the audio settings, which would fix it if the cause is mis-configuration of the settings.

I'm trying to get audio in through the combo audio jack on my T520 -- I can use a stereo or mono mini jack on the other end (attached to an analog cassette deck) but would like to know how to import the audio if it's possible through the audio combo jack?  Adapters etc? Since the stereo mini-jack I have isn't working.  Must say I know it's the wave of the future and I know there's a built in mic.... but am not keen on this "one size fits all" jack...  Thanks

Hi Gaia1muse, What i can say is current Thinkpad uses combo jack for audio, and they are compatable with apple iphone's handfree (for mic and headphone only). Hope this helps.Fred

So the plastic plug on the frontpanel headphone input is loose and now i cant connect my headphones to that jack.
so now i have to connect to the backpanel jack. but the volume is 20 percentage lower than the front...
i have all volumes up to 100.. WTF is this about????? so annoying.

Answer:Why does front panel audio input has louder volume than the backpanel audioINPUT

Maybe one of them has a higher resolution than the other one... Just a guess. I just noticed that sometimes if it isn't as loud than in a different port it sounds worse too.

After i completely dignosed the issue it seems to me that there are problems in BIOS, Drivers and thermal management as when I start playing a game (GTA 5, Battlefiels 1) i runs smooth for 5 minutes but after that i starts lagging and freezing. I have also run some benchmarks but results are similarly as there is the issue of cpu thermal throttling. And audio distortion is due to unstable and poor compatibility drives. In dell forms i read people saying that all this is caused due power management issues which i have also noticed as when CPU is idle is consumes around 20 watt at 50°C but when put under load it once reaches 50 watt of peak usage at 100°C but with in few seconds it thermal throttles and used only 15 watt at 80°C which is even less than idle speed which causes many problems and freezing also all with in few minutes of gaming or proper use. Many uses are facing same problems as i have read on reddit and dell community form but not all the systems are affected as the review units that some YouTube channels and Websites like Laptop Mag reviewed did not exibit such problems or otherwise the reviews are fake. I don't know why dell is not solving the issues and sending me the same problematic Laptop again for the third time.

Hi This is more a poll/discussion rather than a question. I wanted to share with you that I have a x230 and as soon as I installed Win8.1 x64 audio worked fine with "Intel High Def Audio" driver. I though sound was kinda weak (I know this is a tiny laptop but it was a lil' TOO weak). Went to Control Panel>Sound>Speakers>Settings>Properties>Enhancements and activated "Loudness equalization" and noticed there WAS like 50% increase for windows sounds, 0-5% for WMP and around 20% for youtube vids. Then decided to install Realtek HD Audio x64 but since it had to reboot and all that and I dont have any "decibelimeter" or whatever, I couldnt take note of scientific results but I THINK the Realtek MIGHT have increased volume another 20% OVERALL but also noticed the driver is 222MB!!! which was hard for me to believe, still dont understand why so heavy, plus, you get a background process from the Realtek thing. What do u guys think about this? How do you use you "ultraportables" in matters of sound/speaker strenght? Would you install the driver? PD: Keep in mind "Loudness Equalization" enhancement disappears after installing RT driver. Thanks for any comments.

Answer:(Win 8.1) x230 Speaker volume strenght / Realtek Audio Driver may be unnecesary

Hi Daxeroth, thanks for posting and welcome to the community. I'm not sure if this would be the coorect solution for but it has worked for me though when i was working on my X220. I notice i was getting low volume on my system, however when i went to the control panel, I notice there was software called "SMART AUDIO". I had adjusted some setting s there and that really helped increase the audio volume to what i wanted. You may want to check this out.I hope this helps and do post back your results.Regards

msi ms-7548

Motherboard Specifications, MSI MS-7548 (Aspen) | HP? Support

this is a cable i have

plugging in for a test wont short the board?
I am interested if you can have front audio and spdiff output sound.

HP says ---> One 9-pin audio header for headphone-out and microphone-in (yellow, Vista capable, requires matching front audio jack module)

also HP says ---> "Supports one S/PDIF digital connection"
the board has an internal and external spdif, so what is HP saying?

Quote:
Integrated Realtek ALC888S Audio
*Integrated audio is not available if a sound card is installed.
Audio CODEC: Realtek ALC888S
High Definition 8 channel audio
Supports one S/PDIF digital connection

shows the external spdif #2 rca jack which I use hooked up to a sony receiver.

Answer:AC 97 front audio cables on this mb front audio? msi ms-7548

An AC97 connection will work in place of an HD Audio connection to the motherboard sound connection. The AC 97 doesn't support some jack sensing that the HD Audio does.

It should work OK to test if you can get front panel audio and S/PDIF at the same time.

I have a Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Pro Gamer Headset (no USB just jack cable) i have and X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro Series soundcard. Yesterday i was listening to some music not doing anything at all and suddenly my front left speaker sound was dropping like every few seconds it was like turning off the sound from the speakers real quick and now the front left speaker is not working anymore if i go to the sound setup all the sound levels of all the speakers are all the way up and if i go to the speaker setup and test my speakers (5.1) the sound from the front left speaker is really really really low you can just barely hear it. i'm really confused here because i was not doing anything besides listening to music and surfing the web and also i tried to reinstall the drivers but that din't work also is it maybe that my speakers are broken or my soundcard is messed up or is it maybe software related?

Answer:Front Left Speaker problem

Hi niBBit,

Try swapping your front and rear speakers over (swap the plugs) so that your LF is now your LR and RF your RR. Test your speakers again. Are you now getting sound out of your LF with little to none out of your LR? If Yes then it could be your speaker (possibly a flakey connection in the plug), but if No(and your LF output, which is now connected to your LR speaker) is still low then it could be a soundcard and/or driver problem.

My audio rear outs used to work, but even so, i was primarily using hdmi out from my video card. I was also diagnosing BSODs at the time and sent my mobo back to asus for an rma. When it got back, I placed it in a different case and attached the font panel audio.

Due to a new living circumstance, I decided to switch back to the normal audio out, as my hdmi sound is awful on my new monitor. Problem is, now i find that the onboard audio does not work.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling and updating drivers, I have disabled all other drivers in the device manager, I have disconnected the front panel entirely. Nothing seems to re-enable my back panel.

The case is a fairly cheap case being a SHAW GT-M2 although it is new.

I have a dual boot of Windows 7 and OSX Lion the front doesn't work with either.

All drivers are up to date with no yellow ! in device manager

Answer:No front Panel audio detected but Rear Audio works on Asus P8H 61-M LX

Check to make sure that the front panel audio cable is actually plugged into the audio header on the motherboard. If the motherboard has HD audio and the front panel has a plug marked HD-Audio, then plug that into the motherboard. Make sure that it is correctly lined up, otherwise the front panel won't work correctly.
