Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Question: Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Can anybody please help? I have a T61 that came with 2Gb RAM (1GB + 1GB) and I recently purchased another 2GB chip. The problem is that after installation I had a total RAM of 3GB (1GB + 2GB), the Windows Experience Index score actually decreased! It went from 3.5 to 3.1!!Also, under the category Memory (RAM), the score remained unchanged at 4.8!! Should this have at least increased? Also, I am not noticing any improvements in performance. Is there something that I haven't done or is there anything I should do after the installation? And yes, I did refresh/update from index score. Please don't tell me I need to buy a new notebook!!!Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Part of the problem is that with two differents sized DIMMs you lose the Dual Channel mode feature of the RAM, so the effective throughput of the RAM would be lowered compared to the two 1GB modules that operated in dual-channel. If possible I would suggest 2 x 2G modules for a total of 4GB or if you can afford it 2 x 4G modules for a total of 8GB this will keep the dual channel mode active and the RAM performance optimal.

A couple of days ago, I did a system restore, took what files I needed, and reformatted afterwards. In the past, I got freezes every now and then, even after unchecking some of the stuff I didn't need starting up at login. Now, it freezes at the same rate, if not, more often than before. I'd really like to find out what the source behind all this is.

So, I've had 4 PC computers. First one was a bad computer from 1998-2000 that I got from my dad, then I bought a really good gaming computer, degraded and had a bad computer and then I upgraded again and bought this one, it was used.
I know a man that works with computers a lot, fixing basic issues and putting up operating system and so on.

When I got this computer first it didn't have any operating system and I asked him to put up Windows XP and he did that for me. He told me he has worked on a lot of good computers and he had never put up a system on this good computer and everyt... Read more

Hi everyone,

I've been a long time reader on this forum and most of the time I was able to find my answers with the search option. This time however, I'm clueless! So I hope I can count on your expertise. ;)

Yesterday I formatted a friend's computer and installed Windows 7 (he used Vista previously). He can't work at the moment due to an accident, so he's gaming a lot. I told him that Win7 had much better performance than Vista and that he should consider to upgrade. After installing everything we immediately noticed that the performance was much worse...

He mainly plays Diablo 3 and was able to get a very stable framerate in Vista and he always even watched internet streams meanwhile on his secondary display (Full HD TV, connected with VGA).

I installed all latest Nvidea drivers on Windows 7, disconnected the second display, ... And while playing Diablo 3 he gets major framedrops and stutters. To be honest it isn't playable this way.

What could cause this difference in performance? I feel bad for formatting his PC, promising him better performances and seeing that I've almost ruined his gaming experience...

I had my motherboard go out on me a while ago. Filed an RMA, got a new one and fired everything up. Weirdly, my computer's appeared to not recognize any of the devices (I had to re-download all of the drivers despite not losing my HD). Ever since then, everything's been slightly sluggish in Explorer. Button clicks can have up to a second or two of lag. If I hit the start button and start typing to look for something, it takes a full 1-2 seconds for any of my text to start showing up.

This is on a i5 2300k with 4GB of DDR2 RAM. There's a GTX460 in there too. I built the PC myself (and have built PCs in the past) and I'm just not sure why this is all happening. I checked my CPU temps and they're hovering at mid 30's Celsius at idle.

I have reinstalled all the drivers and everything's still sluggish. What do I have left to do?

Answer:Computer's old mobo died, installed new one, sluggish performance.

Did this issue happen right after the driver installs?

Hi, I ran several benchmarks and recorded the results. The computer was an i7 3770 on an Asus P8H77-V with 16gb 1600mhz ram and a GTX 770.

After upgrading my entire computer (more specifically just building a whole new one and giving the old one away) except my vidoe card, which I added to my new system. The new CPU is a 4770K, the new mobo is an MSI Z78-GD65 Gaming, I have different RAM but the speed and timings are the same.

Anyway, I get lower results in benchmarks now Why could that be?

Answer:After upgrading performance is worse

The 3770 and the 4770K will provide similar performance. Now, If I read this correctly, the GPU is the same? If so, then you really didn't do much of an upgrade. More so, you just moved to a newer generation with a unlocked processor (K).

Dell Dimension 1Ghz Pentium 3 running Win 2000 Pro SP4. I had been experiencing lots of sluggishness and programmes taking ages to open and close, so I increased the RAM from 384 to 512, (the maximum for the machine.) I didn?t expect miracles but I did think it would make things a little better. Far from improving things, it seems to be worse.Thinking it may be because the two 256s were different brands and perhaps not compatible, I juggled around between two machines so that I have 512 of the same make, but it?s still no better. Virus/spyware all up to date and checks come up clean apart from the odd tracking cookie; Ccleaner and Clean Up are run quite frequently, and as far as I can make out I only have essential programmes and processes running.Any suggestions as to why things should seem so slow, and even slower since upping the memory? Thanks :o)

Answer:Performance seems worse since increasing RAM

The speed at witch things open and close is not always a ram issue,it also takes into account the cpu speed and hard drive access time, and things loaded at start up that all use ram and cpu recourses. It may well be that the speed you have now is all your pc can achieve.512Mb ram is fairly low for todays standards as is a 1Ghz cpu and if W2000 is anything like XP it is extremely Ram/process hungry. You could try a defrag of the hard drive and try cleaning out the rubbish on the hard drive click here with this you never know it may just improve)HTH.

i found this highly worrying to be quite frank, ive been running Vista Ultimate 32x SP2 for a long time no problems atall including with performance.

over the weekend i VM'ed a win 7 machine through Vista using the same Laptop receorces and it ran ok.

I then thought i might aswell move onto win 7 as vista is no longer the main focus point of compatability

So i formatted my drive fully and installed win 7 ultimate 64x within 30mins.

This is whats getting me though its slower than Vista! startup and log in just takes an age and Idle is at 900Mb with no startup Apps apart from the AV and windows stuff thats essential to start up.

Any ideas as to why its so slow to start up and using so much RAM at IDLE?

Answer:performance worse than Vista

So recently, I've upgraded the CPU on my Dell OptiPlex 380. It came installed with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5800. A month later, I decided to upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Every single site (with the exception of UserBenchmark) I've seen comparing the two, along with a lot of opinions, show that the E8400 is significantly better. How come I'm seeing worse performance? It has a strange bottleneck in less demanding games, and only shows a performance boost in very particular games. Overall, browsing the web is a lot better, I'm able to watch Ultra HD/Quad HD video (sometimes even 4k) and can do general tasks with ease. Despite this however, its gaming performance is extremely lacking compared to my older CPU. How can this be?Note: I've cleaned my fan and cooler, reapplied thermal paste, cleaned my motherboard, and pretty much the entire system, yet still no performance increase.

I played WoW for years on a 10 yr old computer by Gateway..

These were the specs
1.3ghz Pentium 4
1.5gb RAM
Windows XP
Nvidia Geforce 5000something(it was old)

Then I circumstances had me get rid of my old computer, so I adopted a different computer given to me by a friend. It is sort of off-brand, its an Everex Impact. It had Vista and a bunch of junk on it, but I reformatted it to XP. I also upgraded the RAM from 500mb to 2gb and I put a new video card in it.

These are the specs
1.5ghz AMD processor
2gb RAM
Windows XP
Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT

Ok, so, before, on the older computer.. It ran WoW like a champ. No lag, hardly at all. However, now, on the newer computer, my computer freezes up in high-lag zones, where alot of people reside, especially where alot of action is taking place.

Im pretty sure it has nothing to do with my internet connection. Its a standard 100mb/s, same as before. Im convinced there is SOMETHING wrong with my computer.. I just have no way to diagnose the problem any further.

Any pointers or tips in how to diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated. There has to be something Im missing, something Im overlooking. If anymore information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I upgraded to Windows 10 about a week ago, and performance was fine. Then later on performance got worse. I notice lag in Firefox here and there and when typing sometimes (even right now). I usually just have Firefox, Steam and Skype open. Now the fan is louder than usual. I'm even using a cooling pad.

I ran a virus scan with Trend Micro Maximum (my main virus protection), Malawarebytes (and the MB Rootkit Killer), and SpyBot. Trend Micro caught one thing which it removed. The other stuff didn't find anything.

Anyone know what to do?

I recently installed a newer video card in my rather old computer. But it actually made the performance when playing Flight Simulator 2004 worse? With my old GeForce 2 Pro I could run the graphics medium to low, but with the new better card I can put all the sliders as low as possible and it is still unplayable. It gets under 20 fps. I also upgraded from 512mb of RAM to 1Gb when I installed the new GPU, so I was expecting a considerable upgrade in performance in FS, I didn't expect it to get worse!!
Here are my specs: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 1.74GHz, 1GB RAM. ASUS A7N266-VM mobo. XP Home. The new GPU is a GeForce 6200A 128MB

Does anyone know what could cause this??

Hi, I just got a new computer the other day, and it seems to be running slower than it should be.
The specs on the new system are:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHz
Motherboard: ASUSTeK P5NSLI
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT
Memory: 1GB

My suspicions first started when I tried to play Counter-Strike: Source, and got an average of 30 FPS or so, less than my old, much less powerful system. So I decided to download 3DMark06 and try that out. I got a score of 3022, which was the lowest score of any other system like mine. The CPU score alone was 581.

So then I decided to check out Intel's website. I found an "Intel Processor Identification Utility". It reports both cores running at 1.18 GHz instead of the expected 2.13 GHz, and the system bus at 790 MHz, instead of the expected 1066 Mhz.

So, what might be wrong with the processor? Is there some small thing that might be causing problems, or is it time to send the thing back to the manufacturer? Also, would a slow processor completely account for the low 3DMark score, or is there possibly a problem with the video card as well?

Answer:Worse than expected performance, core 2 duo

Just throwing this out:
Does ANYONE have hard data proving that Boot performance [as measured by Windows own internal monitoring, not your conjecture] with Windows 10 is BETTER than on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 on the exact same hardware/devices and applications?

I have yet to see even ONE single example of such on systems that went to market with 8/8.1 or 7 and then were upgraded, regardless of the method [clean install, new drive, whatever, or inline "upgrade"].
I've seen some that, from the User perspective, get to a tolerable point of "its OK", but checking the actual Diags log, it ain't so....
And of course, some are downright unusable, and are best to revert to the good OS that works well.

What is your experience, and data?

[I plan to do a pass through local Best Buy and pull the logs on a bunch of Windows 10 systems on display and see what the recorded bootup and shutdown data shows]

Answer:Boot Performance worse in Windows 10 vs prior. Always?

Windows 10 boot performance is erratic at best. Most of the time seems quite random.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Answer:Re-Installed Windows 7 - Now it runs worse

It could be that a missing or outdated driver is causing the ThinkPad to operate slower than it should.
Have you downloaded and installed the ThinkVantage System Update software in order to get all of the Lenovo-specific drivers and software installed onto the computer?  Also, don't forget to run Microsoft Update and download all of the hotfixes, patches and updates when done with the ThinkVantage System Update software.

Lst night Iuninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 and put in Avast 4 and Comodo firewall......I already had SpamBayes and spysweeper on the computer.

It did not take long and this morning it was worse. Comodo slowed the machine's browsing ability to a crawl...reminds me of Norton/ I disabled it and put up Windows firewall.

Now it seems that Avast is ok and speed has picked up...although the installs screwd up a perfectly working "SpamBayes" program in Outlook.

Right now the separates are not necessarily "faster" than the All in One...and out of PC-Cillin, Norton, Mcafee, Zone Alarm and Kaspersky (all latest Internet Security packages) Kaspersky seemed to be the best and fastest with the only drawback being the Spam, which Spam Bayes worked perfectly with it.

Morning report.....Now what to do about Comodo and the scores of pop ups which take more time than a slower maching, but in this slower machine with tons of pop up alerts....

Any answers?

Thank you

Answer:Installed separate programs for AV etc and things got worse...

The pop ups I am talking about are the Messages from Comodo asking permissions for each and every move any program is trying to make, sometimes 3 messages for the same program.

When you say remove all the startup programs except antivirus, firewall and anti spyware programs, do you mean from the Start up folder or from MSCONFIG.

I am assuming you mean the startup folder in Explore.

Thank you

have dell inspiron 6000 and installed 2gb of memory, replacing 512mb that came with the laptop. when i restarted, black screen with white print said it detected new memory and choice of f1 or f2. chose f1, "continue," and computer seems to run faster except when using internet which i suppose is more a function of my dsl speed and not my memory. really do not know.

f2, if i recall correctly, was to establish some kind of setting. figured choosing f1--continue--was the easy way out. should i have or should i now reset my computer to tell it something re the 2gb just installed?

thanks for your help.

This question was hard to google since it is a little complex to to type out the question but I don't think may be too difficult to answer.

The question is this:

Will performance speed be different

if I have a setup of WinXP(Home or Pro) in a HDD with no software installed in it and a separate HDD with all apps/software installed on a separate HDD

if I have a setup of WinXP(Home or Pro) in a HDD with all the apps/software installed on that HDD? (The extra HDD would be separate for music, pics, docs, etc)
Thanks in advance for reading this question.

Answer:Solved: Performance speed if OS installed in HDD wth no software installed compared 2

Hi There,

Im Adam, from the Gold Coast, in Australia.

I consider myself a relatively knowledgeable person whilst dealing with PC's, however this has me stumped, so I hope all the extremely bright people can help me out.

Windows 7 64bit
Retail version, installed about 6 months

I built the computer for my wife, and was awaiting some items to come into stock, so I had only 4gb of ripjaw ram when first installed everything, and everything ran perfectly.

I got my second lot of ram an additional 4gb of ripjaw ram, same model and mhz rating, however once installed BSOD appeared time and time again, I couldn't track down the problem, I ran mem tests, and came back that there was some errors, I took all 4 sticks back and had them replaced, one set was exchanged on the spot the other took about 2 months, so cruising along on 4gb of ram again, and all is well, receive my additional sticks, and within 2 minutes of loging in, BSOD...

The Motherboard has 4 slots, and is compatable with this ram, the slots are colour coded, blue and white (from memory) and the pairs are in the own colours, pair 1 in the blue slots (1 & 3 slots) and pair 2 are in the white slots (2 & 4 slots), once i pull the additional ram out, back to normal.

Could this be a Motherboard issue?

I have attached the files to the post

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:BSOD happens randomly BUT only when additional new ram installed

And if you swap which pair is in which color--problem still exist?

If yes, then:
Remove one set and Run Memtest86+
Swap set out and run Memtest86+ again.

If both sets pass, then put all four sets in and test again.
If test fails, then RMA the board.

I have purchased an additional 258 MB for my PC that has 128 MB RAM. There are two RAM slots. When I put in both memory cards, the system startup indicates 256 MB ram, but window hangs during startup without any messages.

When I put either memory card in slot one, the system shows 128 MB RAM, and windows XP runs normally.

My Bios String is: 07/24/2000-i810-W83627HF-6A69MC3DC-00

I believe this string indicates a ChainTech Mother Board, Model 6WSV2.

On chaintech url, my mother board is visually similar to Model 60IA3T.

Chaintech BIOS upgrades are at

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to identify the cause of XP hanging when both memory cards are installed.

What additional information should I post?

Answer:XP Hangs with additional memory installed

I agree

Thanks for the suggestion Rick. I came to the same conclusion. I had to download a few manuals from ChainTech, in order to be sure that I knew which model my system board was. Then I upgraded the BIOS, and I still have the same problem. In the correct system board memory, they indicate the requirements for the memory boards, and also suggest that 256 boards are incompatiable.

I'll contact the Ebay store where I purchased the memory, and try to return it.

I'll probably end up getting a 128 board from Crucal (?sp)

I have recently tried installing a 1GB module of Samsung DDR2-800 (PC2-6400 [400 MHz]) RAM alongside the existing 1GB Kingston module of DDR2-533 RAM (PC2-4300 [266 MHz]) that my laptop already had. Although my motherboard supports only up to DDR2-533 RAM speeds, I have tried installing the Samsung RAM module by itself and a few other DDR2-800 RAM on my laptop and they worked fine (although they will run at DDR2-533 speeds). I had also tried installing a 2GB DDR2-800 RAM module previously (2nd slot was blank) and Windows was able to detect all of the 2GB memory, but I had to transfer that RAM module to another laptop.

I believe that I should have a total of 2GB RAM but Windows XP reports my total RAM as 896 MB (128 MB as shared video card memory). My BIOS also reports the same as Windows. On the other hand, CPU-Z detects all of the total memory that I have installed (see CPU-Z details below).

Specs: Laptop is an ASUS A6R, Intel Celeron M 1.7 GHZ, 2 RAM module slots, Windows XP.

I checked out my laptop's memory upgrade info on here:
According to this link, this laptop can support a maximum total memory of 2GB(2048MB) and that 1GB memory modules are supported. Is there any workaround that I can do to make Windows detect all of the memory I have installed? Anything that I might have installed or configured incorrectly?

Answer:Installed additional 1 GB of RAM but Windows does not detect it

Hello there,

It sounds as though it is a faulty RAM module. If all the other ones worked OK then I can only think it is the Module it self. You could send it back and get a replacement and see if the replacement works. If that one doesn't either it sounds as though it is a compatibility problem.

Hello, I am not 100% sure but I think the issue is that your system takes 8GB total Ram. That can be done in 2gb Ram x4. I know that you said that you have a 4gb chip now as I must assume because you said with the 2 new that you bought would make 8. However Looking up your system it says that each slot supports 1 or 2 gb sticks. I am not saying that your system don't have a single 4. Just that it isn't in any of the paper work that I can find to work.  Also important that if your system is using OS 32bit that it would only support upto 4gb and really show under 4 in stats...  Did you try just the Ram you bought 2x2gb to see if they would work with out the 4gb installed? Also wondering if you looked in your BIOS to see if the Bios found that the extra Ram was installed? Again could be that your using a 32bit OS? James

Hello all

I'm running a dual boot (xp x86 / win7 x64)
This runs on 1 drive.

I have an additional drive, which I've recently replaced with a 2TB.

I went to reboot a few times, now I get a blank screen with a flashing curser.

I'd say the boot files are screwed, but I think I've tried everything under the sun to try fix them. I've spent hours.

The annoying thing is, when I 'list volume' in the command prompt of system recovery options, it says my drives are there and healthy.

Ive tried a lot of things. One thing I remember when I was installing the 2TB drive, was that I selected MBR. Could that of screwed it up?
I have everything backed up, but I really don't want to reinstall coz all my programs will take me hours to install. I really should of made an image. I'm also interested in how to fix this.
I've encountered many probs before, but not this one.

I've tried:

Inserting the win 7 disk and executed start up repair- doesn't work
Doesn't list os in system recovery options.
Can't do a system restore,
Startup repair doesn't work
Memory diagnostic doesn't work
F8 doesn't work on start up
Tried sfc commands
Chkdsk doesn't work (all commands)
I've searched Microsoft forums too
Diskpart command-doesn't work - screwed with all commands
Can't select f8
When I disconnect the 2tb and reboot, it then comes up with the 'no bootable device'.

Is there any way to replace all the boot files? Someone suggested on here to use the boot files fro... Read more

I have a Gateway GM5442 with 2 1024 MB DIMMs memory originally installed and just upgraded it with two additional DDR2 PC2-4200 1 GB Samsung memory cards. The computer works as before, but the additional memory does not show in system. I use Windows 7 with 64-bit OS. I already checked that the cards are quite in place and rebooted. I already checked as per your instructions msconfig Advance options. Maximum memory was already unchecked and then checked to "Make all boot settings permanent". Rebooted, and still shows 2.00 GB installed memory (RAM) in System info and 2037 Total Physical Memory in Task Manager.

Answer:Additional memory installed not showing in system

Two thoughts:

Enter the BIOS settings and see if all the RAM is recognized there.

All 4 sticks should be the same voltage. Look on the original sticks and see if there is a sticker with the voltage marked on it, then compare that to the voltage of the new sticks.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help determining if my computer is infected with malware. Here's my situation. My computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I use Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus and the built-in Windows firewall as my firewall. I keep everything updated.

Two days ago I was copying my user profile directory to another drive when the MSE on-access scanner detected the following: Java/OpenConnection.OU. I was doing the copy under a different administrator account from my main account. The only things I did on that account were start the file copy and update my Logitech mouse software.

I told MSE to remove the file and stopped the file copy to do some research. What was detected is a Java vulnerability that exploits a privilege escalation bug in Java to install a Java Trojan which then downloads ax executable payload.

When I switched back to my main account Windows told me it needed to restart so the system changes could take effect. I hadn't made any system changes. I told it not to restart and checked the status of UAC since lowering the UAC setting was one of the symptoms of the Java Trojan. It had been set to disabled. I re-enabled it.

I downloaded the free AVG Linux LiveCD and ran a full system scan with that. It didn't find anything. I then rebooted and let MSE run a full system scan. It detected the following:

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Hey guys, my first time on here and in a bit of a situation. For the past two years I've been running Windows 10 on a Samsung 250GB SSD and had a secondary WD Caviar Blue 1TB HDD as my secondary storage. A few days ago I bought another 1TB WD Caviar Blue and 2TB WD Red disk. I shutdown my machine, unplugged all power and peripherals, grounded myself with an alligator clip band, put in the two new HDDs with new SATA and power cables, turned on my computer and receive the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". When I go into the bios, the only thing that is detected is my SATA Optical BluRay drive, none of my previous or new drives.Thought maybe for some reason there was too much power being drawn so I disconnected the new drives and cables and tried running my old setup, but received the same issue, Optical Drive is detected, HDD and SSD are not. Tried using just the SSD, but that didn't work. Tried each individual drive using different SATA cables and ports, but still are not detected in bios. Since the optical drive is detected and working, took the SATA and power cable from it and tested it on the drives, but they still don't get detected. Reset BIOS to defaults, rebooted, cleared CMOS, removed BIOS jumper from board, unplugged every power cable and piece of hardware from within and plugged it all back in one by one, BIOS is showing good voltages for everything, SATA is enabled in... Answer:Installed two additional HDDs and none of my drives are detected in bios anymore

Doesn't make sense...Normally if a HDD isn't seen in BIOS the drive is dead...chances of 2 happening at same time are slim.Do these drives have OS's installed to them ?Your boot drive should be on SATA 0 or 1...all others higher. You may wanna try a new CMOS battery if the PC is 3 years or older. For testing purposes leave the optical drive disconnected til you get them working.

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

My PC is having multiple issues, even after trying the R&R scans. Only SAS and Malwarebytes completed without any issues. The last scan, MGTools, ended with a blue screen. Combofix never started the scan portion, even after waiting 3 hours. Root Repeal seemed to finish, but came up with a message about an inaccessable memory block and then the computer shut down.

The current problems I'm having: Google redirect (IE); Hard drive errors (last one was right after power on); programs not opening over time; almost all files on computer are hidden; message about corrupt files in recycle bin (even though it's empty); volume doesn't work; some file on my desktop called "settings.dat" that was created today and, according to it's properties, opens with daemon tools pro.

These are the only logs I have. I'm not sure what the MGTools log will show after the blue screen incident. If there is any step that may seem like I missed it, trust me, I did everything I my PC would allow me to do in its current condition.

Answer:Need help! Computer going from bad to worse.

It started off with opening any sort of media application, like a video or a game, and after having it go for 2-3 minutes, the screen would hard-lock, a various assortment and array of colored pixels would sprawl across the screen, jumbling it and making it completely unreadable, and, if any sound was occuring at the time of the freeze, it would loop continuously in a most annoying fashion. I shut down the computer and restarted.

It then progressed into a much worse state where, upon start-up, the black screen (the computer is a Dell XPS 730, by the way. Graphics card being a Nvidia 9800 GT, with Intel Quad Core Q6600 processors, at 2.4GHz. The PC is two years old) with the big blue 'DELL' logo, would have flickering pixels scattered across the screen, being much more prominent than before, making the screen THAT MUCH more unreadable. There were also various colored 'smiley-face' icons at various spots across the screen (these appeared most-prominently when I attempted to open my BIOS menu to find some means of fixing this. The screen was riddled with them). I wondered if this was a hardware malfunction at this point, or some sort of virus. I wasn't sure why hardware malfunctioning would cause a large portion of the screwed-up pixelated garbage to be taunting smiley-face emotes. The pixelation of the screen was so bad, I could not even SEE the Microsoft-icon button to press and enter my password for login (OS is Windows Vista 32-bit). I had to shut-d... Read more

A few days ago I noticed some odd things with my computer, it would start off with thing like me loading a Myspace page and the music player not loading etc, then progressively over the past few days its been getting worse and worse, to the point where I can only view my hotmail page just as I turn the comp on, but about 15 mins after its been turned on the page refuses to load, many links on websites wont load, MSN disconnects itself and wont reconnect and now my most recent issue of the internet disconnecting itself at times.

Usualy if a problems cropped up, Spybot or Adaware usually flushes it out, but neither of those programs when run normally, or in safe mode have done the job, Ive tried all I can think of and even my brother doesnt know whats wrong, and thats usually quite rare ; )

So I did some further research and have seen that some problems have been resolved via a Hijackthis log, which I will post a log for my computer in the hope that my problem can be resolved as my life is becoming much more difficult with me living through this machine nearly all of the time hehe.

Hey gang,
Since you all helped me with my pc, I am hoping you are willing to take a crack at my father-in-law's pc, I'm gonna explain the problem to ya here, because i'm getting nowhere fast. It won't let me into the "my computer" section to remove any unwanted software. It took me 6 times to be able to get to this website. I cannot (for some strange reason) find HighjackThis to download. And at the moment it is refusing to download Adaware. This is something that needs to be taken care of immediately. Poor man also has unwanted popups, I'm sure he's been infected with spyware. We need your help ASAP.
Please send me the info so i can download HighjackThis,

Answer:this computer is worse than mine

Ad-aware and Spybot are both a little too big, but HijackThis can fit on, and in fact be run from, a floppy disk. Copy HJT from your machine to a floppy, take it to your FIL's machine and run it. Copy the log back onto to floppy, take it back to your machine, and them post.

Long story made short. About a year ago my laptop crashed, I panicked and went to K-Mart and bought a Toshiba Satellite C55D, cheap laptop (400$) but I needed internet access that same day. Right outta the box I had issues, lots of lag and I have Charter high speed, no problems before. Computer just stops for like a minute at the time, Called Toshiba and the situation got worse. They said they didn't warranty the software which they claimed to be the problem, wanted me to pay 150$ for tech support on a brand new laptop. I refused and have struggled with this laptop ever since. I will never buy anything else made by Toshiba again. I have a AMD E1 Processor. Can't even watch Netflix some days. Can anyone help?
Thanks LD

hi,, I hope someone can help me.. My computer is REALLY, REALLY slow... no matter if I am on the net OR just working on the desktop, it takes forever to do anything.. I have run all the diognostic, restore and clean up programs I can think of, but still no improvement...I have xp, 3ghd, 256 ram.. not sure what else is needed but thats a start..thankyouvicky :-?

Answer:computer is worse then a turtle...

Your hard disk is only 3 GB? Are you sure?    Also, 256 is enough to slow a system down pretty well. What programs do you have running in the background while on the computer? Which antivirus protector do you have? Are you sure that you're virus free?Flame

So I have a lenovo sl500 laptop, that runs windows vista home basic.
I went to turn it on yesterday, and it did all the normal things.
It went to the thinkpad lenovo screen, then gave a windows progress bar at the bottom ( like it usually does ) gives the circular vista icon and sound, and then brings up the user login screen. I log on, it says welcome, and brings me to a black black screen. I have a mouse on screen that responds to movement, but not respond to right or left click. It stays here and doesn't load the home screen. I have run the memory test application from the start up. It said I had an error # 8603. I have found that this means CMOS checksum bad. I have run the setup bios utility, and set everything to manufacturer defaults. Still nothing. I hav checke the back up battery, and it meters at 3.1 v ( Which is good..) so. Do I have a bad motherboard, possibly a bad hard drive? Whoever can help it would be appreciated.

I built a computer 2 days ago (Tuesday) with the help of a guy I know. It has an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, an NVidia graphics card ( forgot the model, but has 512 Mb), a 1Tb seagate SATA hdd, forgot what the DVD-CD Burner was, an LG775 Dual-Core Intel Processor, 2x2 Gb of RAM, a 600W power supply, and 6 decent fans between it all (2 on the case, 1 on the power supply, a on the CPU, 1 on the motherboard, and 1 on the video card). When I installed xp SP3 and installed the drivers, the hdd was conflicting with the motherboard driver and the guy found a patch for the driver which fixed the problem. Last night though (Wednesday), I had been installing software all day long (such as photoshop, WoW, etc.). I was letting the WoW patches download (950 Mb), and a couple of other downloads finish over night, but I decided to make it sleep overnight. This morning however, It froze I guess mid-start and I had to restart it. I tried to start WoW and firefox and they would load in the task manager, but get nowhere (WoW was sitting at 76 b, and firefox at 3,260Kb). I restarted one more time, then they wouldn't load at all, I ran a scan with AVG 8.0 free, bu I had it shut down after it finished since I was gonna be gone all day. Now I can't find where it would save a log of the results, and it isn't even running now, background processes in the task manager won't even fully load. When I try to start ANY program now, it won't even start loading in the task manager. When I end a process... Read more

Answer:just built a computer, now it won't run anything and seems to be getting worse!

Hi !

What's the exact brand and model of the video card (nvidia is the chip maker, not the manufacturer) and what's the exact brand and model of the power supply ?

Enter the BIOS at startup (press del), locate the hardware monitor screen and give us the temps, fan speeds and voltages (+3.3, +5 and +12V) you'll see there.

Remove the 2 case fans and leave only one memory stick in the first DIMM slot (XP 32bit can't use 4GB anyway). See if it helps.

Just recently my computer has started to reboot itself with monotonous regularity. I am running XP on an 1800xp machine. It apears to happen after using programs like MS Publisher etc, in fact it has become almost impossible to use Publisher as it crashes so often. Today I tried to do a disc cleanup on my C drive and this proved to be impossible as it crashed out almost as soon as it started to do the initial check. The error message that I get is as follows.C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\mini080403.dmpC:\DOCUME~\Arthur\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xmlThis is the most regular error message. Is there anyone out there that can throw light on this for me as I really could do without having to reformat and go through all of the grief of setting up again.Thanking you for any help.

Answer:Computer taken a turn for the worse

A reformat should always be the last option and I suspect that it is more likely to be a memory problem.First of all check to make sure that it is properly in place by (with the PC disconnected from the power supply) opening up the PC tower and using the side clips to pop the RAM stick out and then reinsert it. If the PC still won't work then click here to test your memory. If it is properly in place and the test shows there to be a problem then it is best to get some from click here as their Memory Selector will help you pick the right memory for your PC. There turn around is very quick and anything ordered tonight you should have by Wednesday. If you have more than one memory stick then test each one independantly to see which is faulty but remember that there should always be a stick in Rimm 1 on your motherboard so a bit of switching around is required. Hope this helps.

Last week I got a virus of some sort on my computer and ever since it hasn't been working properly and I keep getting a lot of pop-ups. Within the last few days I've also started getting warnings on my internet screens themselves. Everything is in red and it says Warning: You're computer needs to be scanned, viruses detected. I've been scanning it daily with avg, but it is never completely resolved. It may seem slightly better after the scanning but later it will be even worse than it was prior to the scan.

Please help! I don't know what to do....

Thank you!

Very sorry to bother you and I appreciate your helpfulness. A few months ago I noticed I was no longer able to watch youtube videos and the like. I used to be able to without problem. Now it stops and starts. The computer began to bog down and run slower, getting worse over time. Today I was going to try to "clean house". I ran Spybot S&D, and then downloaded and ran Glary Utilities, Registry Mechanic, and Spyware Blaster. Now it's a mess, I don't have sound anymore. I have an older system and can't afford to upgrade now, but it did run a lot better a year ago than it does now.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi guys.

Basically i returned from Uni to find my dad and bro both had new desktops, and wanted to chuck the old one away. Rather than this i thought i would connect it to my tv in my room and have a desktop for games alongside my laptop.

Its a Medion PC MT5/ MED MT89, with 512 Ram and runs Windows XP. The processor (which becomes more important as you'll see, is a 478 pin 1.6ghz P4 SL5VH).

So i connected the tele and the pc up and booted it. It started up fine witht he memory checks and what not but then suddenly crashed with a blue screen error saying unmountable boot volume etc etc...Thinking it would be the boot.ini i set about trying to boot it from CD. I changed the boot sequences, and even then for some unknown reason it just would not boot off the cd.

Bearing in mind it has DVD drive as well as a CD drive, i selected the DVD drive as the primary master as the CD didnt seem to have power. Tried it again, and yet no boot up...

Thinking someone might have done something to it, i opened it up to check the wires and connections and in doing so found it to be filthy...i set about cleaning it out, until without thinking twice i'd RIPPED THE HEATSINK & FAN OUT!!!! Unbeknown to me, the processor was glued under that and i'd ripped it out without unlocking the mechanism as it was covered by the heatsink...I tried to put the Heatsink (with the processor still pasted to it) back into the motherboard but i couldnt get it to sit or lock in. Hi everyone! I run WinXP sp 2 with 1G ram. Lately my computer has been getting progressively slower. It lags when switching between windows or closing windows, or opening new programs, and programs just randomly freeze up (mostly firefox, MSN, and photoshop). It does this quite frequently and it never has before. It's also been idling at a higher CPU usage than normal. At first I thought it may have been my webcam, since lately having it on will shoot my CPU usage to 70-85% (or even 90 sometimes) when it wouldn't normally go over 50% in the past. I would reinstall the driver, but I can't find the CD and can't locate it anywhere on the internet. I've come to notice, though, that even without webcam on, my computer is so much slower and more easily overwhelmed than it has been in the past. I tried many of the things in your "slow computer?" forum to see if I could fix it, which included defragmenting, getting rid of old programs, etc etc. Anyhow, while those things showed temporary improvement, it didn't help overall. I've been quite hesitant to post on this forum because I'm very afraid of there actually being nothing wrong with my machine and me having wasted your time. Though I really can't deal with this lag, so I'll bring myself to post anyway. ]:

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)

Also, each time I open Internet Explorer, it's telling me that I'm working offline and now I have to manually switch it to online when I want to use the internet. I have no idea what to do. Please help!!! Logs below:

When I turned my computer on this morning, a blue screen came up that I've never seen before. It said:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable DIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F* to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Hi all,
I know this is and old-school post but I'm having problems with my laptop just chewing up CPU and Memory for no obvious reason (to me) even when idling. I'm running Windows XP with 4GB RAM (I know it only accepts 3GB of it) and twin Intel 1.5Ghz processors which should cause XP to run fine. It also takes a long time to boot, showing a black screen with a single flashing white cursor which it never used to do. This screen lasts for around 30 seconds before windows kicks in. I have tested my laptop using various anti-virus and spyware software (1 at a time!) and found nothing. I have also run HijackThis and below is the log post, if that helps anyone identify the problem. Also, I have a 150GB HD with 127GB free, and I have defragged it etc. Here's hoping for a solution.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

Hello Folks,I was using my old desktop for ~ 10 years, It was running Windows 2000 and didn't have any issues except last years it became very slow. I checked requirements for WinXP and noticed that my spec is higher than minimum requirements ... hence I installed WinXP SP3. My specs:Intel Celeron 501 MHz, 512 Mb RAM, 16 Gb hard drive. After installation my system is fully functional but I hardly could use it. I mean that I see that in average it uses less that 50% or RAM but CPU usage is almost 100% when I open Web browser. My goal to use it ... actually just browse internet and check email. I started to use instead of IE another browser i.e. Chrome but still it uses 100% of CPU just when I open browser.Could someone advice me if I could somehow tune it? I'm not going to buy additional hardware for this case ... just curious if I could somehow improve performance a little bit.Appreciate any advice.susja

Answer:Improve performance of XP installed on 10-year old desktop

You MUST install IE 8, or another newer internet browser. IE 6.x is not supported properly by many web pages anymore, and you get long delays loading some web pages, and excessive cpu loading on slow computers, because IE 6 was not designed to handle the Java code the page is loading. Obviously you must have been using a newer internet browser before in 2000, since you said it ran reasonably well. You must install the main chipset drvers for your mboard after Setup has finished in order for your drives to be able to run as fast as they are capable of.

Hello SevenForums,

once again I am here for your help because I've noticed something pretty strange.
Well last week I finally decided to get rid of my old (and dieing, bad sectors) hdd and install windows 7 on a brand new SSD. Everything is fine, installed applications and updates etc.
But I've noticed something wierd, when I had Win7 running on the hdd, (same components) memory usage when idle would never exceed 500 mb. Now with win7 on the ssd, memory usage is always above 1-1.5gb while idle, as soon as I boot into desktop memory stays fixed at 1gb with harderly any applications open.
These are the tweaks to windows that I did, are any related to memory performance issues?
Turned off hibernation, indexing on ssd & defragmention.
Moved User Document folders to hdd.

I have noticed one process "audiobg.exe" that uses 15mb ram and I can't get rid of it, tried searching online and its not "enhance audio" because I don't have the option.

And while I'm here, to minimize SSD's read/writes, I tried to move AppData folder following some steps from a guide, changing Environment Variables of TEMP and System Temp to another drive, but it doesn't seem to work for all applications, is there anything else I must do?

Edit: Just realised I should post some pc specs and tests, one moment.

Hi All,

I have a laptop that has been upgraded to Windows 7 from vista. In the beginning everything was fine and things worked really fast. However, for past few months I have had dreadful performance. Whenever I check my CPU is at 100% and it takes ages to do anything. Even opening a chrome tab takes 5 minutes. I tried doing driver checks to confirm nothing was wrong.

After trying hard, I just re-installed Windows 7 but no luck. Then I formatted my hard disk and installed windows 7 again. Now it works fine but I do get the extreme slowness sometimes.

While doing all of this, one thing I noticed that if I was to put my laptop to sleep and bring back it might start working absolutely fine. Before reformatting it worked 50% of times. Now again it has worked whenever I tried. I wonder if this is a CPU power setting issue? I have already set the power settings to have full performance.

The CPU is Intel dual core T5300 1.73 GHz and 2 GB RAM.

Any help will be really great

Answer:Slow performance on newly installed Windows 7

Do you have SP1 installed and all Windows updates up to date?

You also need to identify via task manager what Is using the most CPU and Memory during those times of slowness.
Once you know that then you can look further into things.

No ideas on that sleep issue sorry.

ive been given an old lap top (its running XP so not that old!) & Im wondering if all I need for an internet connection do I just buy a cable & plug it into one of the free sockets at the back of my router?
I doubt if its wireless so im guessing a cable is the way to go? Besides, someone disabled the wireless part of the router for security reasons for me & I wouldnt have a clue how to reset that!
Or, is it not that simple? like do I have to register it with my isp or download some program or what?
My desktop is running Vista if that makes a difference.

sorry, no idea!

The "freeze" seems to happen when the IE7.0 browser is open (though, I do not
necessarily think it is definately a browser problem). Anyway, drwtsn32.exe
always activates when this problem occurs, and wants to send a report.

I have reviewed the contents of the report on several occasions and it
basically shows the error in the same location every time with the identical
error (I think).

The error is always occurring here: C:\Documents and Settings\Daddy\Local

The only way I can unfreeze my computer when it locks up is by going to my
task manager and ending task on one of TWO drwtsn32.exe's.

I went to my event viewer and looked up my last crash information that was
sent to microsoft. It happened about an hour ago. This problem is starting to
happen more often now, and is finally annoying the hec out of me. It is an
application error, and here are the details straight from the event viewer:

I am new to this forum and am having a lot of trouble with my computer. I would appreciate any help I can get with cleaning my computer from what I believe is malware. It started with just redirecting Google searches to other sites, but it seems to be getting worse. It now redirects sites that we type into the browser (was using IE, but am trying Chrome to see if it's any better) and it's not loading certain sites (ie. like Nick Jr. (my son)). Aside form that, it doesn't seem to be allowing Itunes to load or function properly (although this my be my fault as I was removing programs I didn't recognize in an attempt to clean my computer up using the Add/Remove tool from the control panel and may have accidentally deleted something essential to Itunes). I tried to download Itunes again and reinstall it and my computer wouldn't let me. I've run Skybot, but that didn't seem to have any effect. I also tried downloading TDSSKILLER and running it, but my computer wouldn't run it. I'm going to try downloading it from my work computer and saving the program to a jump drive and then seeing if it will run from there at my home computer.

I would truly appreciate any help that could be given. Thank you very much.

PS. I forgot to mention (and was reminded when reading some other threads here) that all of this started with the Windows XP Recovery Virus. I got this on the computer and had to run the computer in safe mode and then r... Read more

CPU: Intel core duo T8100 @2.10 Ghz and 2.10ghz

Graphics: Ati mobility radeon hd 3870

Ram: 2 Gb

Running Windows Vista 64 (although some of my program files say 32?)

So suddenly on june 5th my computer started acting more sluggishly and couldnt perform near as well as it did before. I checked the updates and windows defender and mcafee were the only programs recently updated, I defragged the hard drive, searched for malware and spyware, updated all drivers and none of it fixed my problem. My rig was easily able to play 1080p before and now the video lags terribly, and the games the used to run super smoothly (in range of 30+ fps) now run at and average of 12 fps or lower. On clean boot the problem persists and i cant really tell if the problem is there in safe mode because the only time i can really tell my computer is slowing down is when it is streaming video or playing games.

The weird thing is ive been messing with my video drivers to see if i can fix it, and after using driver sweeper my graphics card didnt function (my windows experience index went from a 5.9 to 1, i couldnt use windows aero) but 1080p ran smoothly as ever. Once i reinstalled the drivers my index score went back up to 5.9 but it cant play 1080p. Because of that fiddling around i cant install catalyst control center anymore (it seems to install ok but when i open it there is an error message "could not load file or assembly CLI.implementation or one of its dependancies the s... Answer:Recovered Computer Thinking It Would Help But Made It Worse

What are you recovering from?

You'll need to either get a cd, which everyone should have anyway, or you'll need to install more software that may or may not help you in fixing your problems.

But no matter what, you need a cd of your operating system.

Post what caused the problem, and maybe we can help you better. Post any details about your computer, so that the help can better find a solution.

I've got a very strange problem that occured after I did a trojan removal. Surprising enough my computer worked fairly well while the trojan was busy doing whatever it pleased. I ran my weekly scan with malwarebytes and naturally it found the trojan, asked to remove and reboot. I allowed it to...reboot occurs. I'm feeling hunky dorie..and then I log in. For some reason some programs open just fine like before. Others only open after a solid 6 minutes. And others take even longer. I have not a clue what happened. I did a clean boot with all of the non microsoft services turned off to no avail. What in the heck happened?! any ideas?

I've had my computer (MSi GT60 0NC) since August of last year. In the last month, I noticed that after turning on my computer, sometimes I can only go to the first ~5 sites I went to. For example, if I turned on my computer, went to techsupportforum, Google, Bing, StackOverflow, and Spotify, I would only be able to go to those websites in particular. I could fix this by restarting, and it only happened about once a week, so I ignored it for the most part. Recently, however, it's gotten progressively worse, even to the point that restarting does not fix it. The only way I've found that fixes it is to just leave the computer alone for 10 minutes. I'm really confused at what is happening. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and here's a screenshot of my computer's specs (probably not relevant, just wanted to post it just in case):

Also, I've tested it out, and it's not just the web browser. If I open cmd and use ping or ipconfig, it doesn't work.
Here's an example ping (one site that did work, one that did not):

and here's an example tracert (that did not work):

If I forgot any important details, just let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Im going to guess that you downloaded the wrong video or graphics or chipset can go to the add/remove and see whats listed. what you should do is go to the dell site and look up the model of computer you have and put in your service tag then it will show you all the drivers needed for your computer specifically.

Last week on the Operating System, XP forum, I posted a request for assistance with reducing the number of programs that run on my computer. One person instructed me to repost my question here - which I swear I did - but I couldn't find it later when attempting to check on it. So, I followed the advice from another responder, installing some helpful utilities, running others, etc.

I had printed out the information given to me, read it carefully and followed the advise to the best of my limited ability. Now, as is typical, my computer is running slower, some commands are being totally ignored, and I still have way too many things running (55), most of which (if I'm interpreting what I read correctly) shouldn't be turned off or disabled. (I do need specific instructions on how to uninstall Norton - which I have disabled, after installing AVG. I understand that it requires advanced technological smarts.)

Once again I've attempted to make the switch from IE7 to Firefox. I keep hearing how superior Firefox is, yet, I find it aggravating, specifically the fact that I can't use my arrow keys, Home nor End keys to get up and down pages. Why is that???? Also, Firefox took away my Google Bookmarks toolbar and I can't get it back. Now I can't get it back on IE either. In general, regardless of the browser I'm using, most of the time they open with random modifications to my settings.

So my dad decided it was a good idea to upgrade his Netbook (which he takes everywhere with him) with an SSD, so naturally I made sure I let him know beforehand that an SSD was not going to perform as advertised on his Netbook given that it only has a SATA 2 (3Gb/s) interface and a pretty low end Intel Atom based CPU. He agreed and still took a chance with it.

The problem is, even in my low expectations, I was sure it was still going to improve things quite a bit, but the Netbook runs almost exactly the same with it?, which was pretty unexpected.

The SSD is a Crucial MX100 128GB.

So... Is there I'm missing? is there a software I need to be running in order to get the most out of Crucial SSD's?, I'm running a Plextor SSD on my main gaming rig and it runs absolutely beastly without any software, etc.

EDIT: I made sure I changed the SATA Mode to ACHI before installing Windows 8.1.

Also, I did not install any Intel Chipset drivers or anything on the Netbook given how old it is, Windows should have the latest drivers for it (I did run Windows Update).

Please, I need your help guys, thanks!

Answer:Installed SSD on an Atom-based Netbook, performance issues

Did you apply all updates? Also, be sure to "optimize" the SSD, using Win8.1's disk tools. EVERY PC I've ever put an SSD into, even those with SATA 2 support, are much, much faster then they were. Your SSD may be bad... I've had this happen a few times.

Hi all..

This is my 2nd post in here. Before i start, pardon me for my poor English and non-high tech brain.

I really need help. Ok, this going to be a long post. But let me inform of my laptop first, my laptop is Compaq Presario CQ40-538TU, 32 bit, using Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm a heavy laptop user. i use it around 6-7 hours in workdays, and it could reach to 24 hours non-stop in weekend, sometimes even to 1,5 days (36 hours) to 48 hours in weekend. i mostly use my laptop to browse some websites i visit often and to watched movies/dramas i downloaded.

Few days ago (on July 22nd) when i started my laptop i got this message :

"Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disk needs to be checked for consistency. You can cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within(10)seconds."

it happened before, and usually it completed the checking to all the 3 stages. but now it shows this :

"Cannot open volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package. Use the system restore feature from the control panel to restore the system to a point prior to the recent software package installation.
An unspecified error occured (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)"
The problem is, i didnt remember what new software in installed, as i'm not high tech savvy, i never installed software that i'm not really sure if it save t... Read more

I have Windows 10 (not sure if it is 32 bit or 64 bit) on a re-furbished HP RP5700.  It has limited RAM (I believe it is currently 2GB), and I would like to add more before I load Office 365 on the computer.  Is this possible, and if so how can I be sure that I buy the right memory card to plug in?  What I was looking at was an 8GB, DDR3, 1600MHz card/module.  Would this be the right one, and/or do I need to specify anything else to make sure it won't bollocks up the whole thing?

Hi guys, I just joined. I think I could have done with looking around on this place BEFORE I buggered up my computer an hour ago. Anyway:

I just bought a new computer (specs are in my profile) and I was trying to install the hdd from my old computer onto the new one. I was having trouble getting the computer to recognise the hdd and I was told to go into the BIOS and detect it. I did so, and my computer froze when it was detecting, so I turned it off. I checked the connections again and went to turn my computer on again, only it wouldn't turn on. There is nothing to indicate that it's receiving power at all, no lights, nothing. It's like it's not connected to any power source at all. As far as I can tell all the wires are connected properly. I've tried to turn it on with both hard drives disconnected but that doesn't do anything either. Can anyone enlighten me with some possible solutions?

Thanks for reading.

Answer:Tried to set up additional hdd, now computer won't turn on

disconnect power from back of computer then try resetting your bios jumper.. move the jumper to clear cmos then hold power button in the on position for aprox 30-60 seconds.

move jumper back to normal, plug power back in and see what happens

What I do know about computers, I have taught myself. I guess that means I know enough to be dangerous. After much research, I installed 2 - 256MB SDRAM PC133 DIMM. Per emachines non-published specs, I found I was limited to only 4-5 mfgs of these memory cards but was able to locate 2 Infineon's with the specific part #/model # that they indicated was supported.
I have installed them and my first boot up seemed to boot up fine, although I thought it was still rather slow in bringing up SysTray and my Startup programs. I was able to verify that it was recognizing that I indeed had 512MB RAM. I then opened IExplorer and at this point I locked up. Mouse not was recognized, keyboard not recognized (lights out). Nothing would work until I shut off power. From this point forward things just got worse. Monitor goes heywire, now the monitor just goes black and my HD appears to start running on it's own. Or nothing works, monitor black, keyboard and mouse don't function, let the light indicators tell me they are still active. I get different errors msgs when I turn off power and turn back on - of course -sometimes indicating it recovered from a critical error, once saying I had a corrupted system file and to restore (which I did a system restore), I have reinstalled the keyboard and mouse driver and the graphics driver. Even booting up in Safe Mode does not make a difference. I am not sure where to begin looking. It locks up at different places every time... Read more

Answer:Additional Ram causes computer to Lock Up

Well sense I'm confused on just what computer you have, if its store bought or built. I read e-machine also, so?

One thing you must look at will your motherboard clock it down to pc100 from 133, if not you will have problems like you decribe. Also maybe the max is 256 not 512. by naming just the motherboard and not the model, they are made differently from the manufacter then a prebuilt system (store bought) so if it is an e-machine a model is needed..

Hi I am wanting to install an additional hd into a HP computer Pavillion 503.  The other HD comes from same type and model of computer.  I am wanting to combine the two together, one has the video plug for monitor broken in it.  What I would like to know is if there will be any issues with taking the other HD from the one and installing in this one.  Done harvested the memory stick from the other just wanted to make sure that there is not something I need to watch for installing the other hard drive as well.  Both have been running xp.  Any advice would be welcomed.

Answer:Installation of additional hd to an HP computer

The new hd will not boot to the OS, but other than that there is nothing special about adding a hard drive.

First off, I did scan through some of the forums, but couldn't find anything that looked like the problem I was having. So I apologize if this has been a topic of massive discussions and I just missed it. This problem has become a particular thorn in my side and extremely frustrating one at that. All I want to do is watch videos off the external drive to the PS3 or blu ray players with the family and then MicrosoftFixit ruins everything. Color me sad...and frustrated. One can only watch so much Wheel of Fortune...
I was changing to a larger TB external drive for streaming throughout the house. Everything used to stream fine through WMP. The devices never showed up in Media Streaming options, but everything worked and updated without incident. Once I changed to the larger external drive, no media folders showed up on any device in the house. The WMP icon was there from Folders>Videos> but then, no files anymore.
I saw that my Windows Firewall had a big red box on it and thought that might be the culprit eventhough I had been using Bitdefender Total Security with no problems. I used Microsoft Fixit to fix the "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x80070" and to try and get network devices to show up in Media Streaming Options.
After using it, my devices showed up in Media streaming options and my Windows Firewall went from the red to the correct looking green blocks screen. Restart. Then IT happened. Nary a Media Serv... Read more
