ERROR 2102 for new 7200 hdd in ultrabay

Question: ERROR 2102 for new 7200 hdd in ultrabay

Hi.Yesterday I received 2 x 7200rpm hdds. I intended to use both of them, 1 in main bay and 2nd in ultrabay, but I ran in some issues. For some reason, at a regularly basis I'm getting "ERROR 2102 Initialization error on HDD1 (Ultrabay hard drive)", i mean not every time, but every 2nd or 3rd try.I noticed that when it is NOT recognized, green led is much brighter, it looks the same when optical drive is ready and idle(not working). On the other hand when it's darker, but still has some light there, it works fine, it is recognized and I can boot into OS with not problems. 2nd case looks the same as optical drive is under usage, when you copy something from a CD/DVD.I have a feeling that it's because it doesn't power up ultrabay drive properly.Oh, the "Ultrabay Slim SATA HDD Adapter" is not from IBM (I bought it on ebay), can this be the problem? I would be more convinced if it wouldn't work at all, but not in this case, although I may be wrong. I guess this will be the last option i have, it just costs about 55$, it's kind of expensive try.Does anyone know any solution for this? Any thoughts are welcome.Thank you in advance.Message Edited by oct on 02-17-2009 11:21 AM

Preferred Solution: ERROR 2102 for new 7200 hdd in ultrabay

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ERROR 2102 for new 7200 hdd in ultrabay

This is an older post but I found the reason anyway. I've been running a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9320423AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s in my T61's primary bay for months without issue. I recently added an additional HDD with an Ultrabay purchased directly from Lenovo. The new drive, a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s resulted in the same error you are receiving. "ERROR 2102 Initialization error on HDD1 (Ultrabay hard drive)" The problem for me is that the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter only supports 1.5Gb/s of thoughput while the new drive is 3.0Gb/s

I just added a refurbished mainboard to my T60 Widescreen (Model 8743). Everything works fine except I can't boot with my DVD/CD-ROM drive in the ultrabay. The system hangs. I try to enter the BIOS, the screen won't come up. After 3-4 minutes the system gives me the following message: initialization error 2102 (and some more). It's basically an Ultrabay problem. I can then enter the BIOS. BTW the UUID in the BIOS is zeroed. The DVD drives I try are produced in 06/07 and are the both of the Multi kind (dvdrw/cdrw).So, the system boots fine with the DVD drive out. Once it's up and running I can insert it back in the machine, Win7 registers it and everything works fine.I have checked extensively on-line but don't see any solutions.Any help woud appreciated. If it's a mainboard problem I need to return it. Thanks.

Answer:Odd Boot problem. Ultrabay error 2102.

A quick addidion: the full error message reads:Error 2102: HDD1 (Hard Drive in ultrabay) initialization error. Obviously a DVD drive is not a Hard drive.

I have a w530 with a 512GB Samsung 830 SSD with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. 12.7mm SATA III Drive Bay adapter from Lenovo 500GB 7200rpm HDD that came with the laptop in the drive bay. I get the 2102 Detection Error on HDD1 (Ultrabay HDD) on startup before I even have the option to get into BIOS, and the drive cannot be found in BIOS either.  All drivers up to date. No signs of physical damage on any of the ports. This is really frustrating; I have a lot of data on my second drive. Any solutions? I've read pretty much all other posts about this error message and haven't found a solution anywhere.

Hi, The topic isn't new but I haven't found the solution yet. Some time ago (about 2 months) my sata ii (3gb/s) seagate momentus strated freezing, but since last 3 years it was working fine. I thought it's broken. I boughts new sata iii wd blue 1 tb. And this one is not working at all with my ultrabay (not original) drive. Only works very olg 80gb seagate 1,5gb/s sata I hdd. If I put seagate momentus (the previous one) it shows the disk but system freeze.  The same with the new one. BIOS recognizes new wd blue but tests keeps houres (its veeery slow). What could be the problem? The adapter is broken in some way or wd blue doesnt fits. The same is with another sata ii hdd (nothging at all) and with sata iii samsung 840 ssd (only once it shows in explorer) - then nothing. System doesnt see modern disks at all and freezes. Wd blue of course works fine plugged into hdd0. Greatings!

Two different T61ps.  Mine is a 6459-CTO model.  Two different Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB drives.  System boots fine, even with a second hard drive installed in the Ultrabay SATA adapter, most recently a Samsung Spinpoint 500GB 5,400rpm drive in mine, but before that 320GB and 200GB drives.  No problems with any of those drives. Install a Seagate 7200.4 drive in the UltraBay adapter though and turn the system on, and the system won't complete post.  The hard disk activity indicator stays on solid.  The drive activity light on the UltraBay stays on solid.  And the system doesn't leave post. Unplug the UltraBay and the system boots fine.  The drive can be used if plugged into the system via USB in an external USB/SATA case, and appears to work fine as far as I can tell in this mode. I have updated the BIOS in this T61p to the latest and the problem persists.

Answer:Lenovo T61p and Seagate Momentus 7200.4 POST problem in UltraBay

I have exact the same problem. Same Momentus 7200.4 in ultrabay, T61 (6465-CTO), it stops for long time and says ERROR 2102 HDD1 not initialized...or something like that..  Except in my case i was able to start it couple of times, but not always. My guess would be that ultrabay  not always can power up this hdd, may be I'm wrong...

Hallo, Since the past couple of days I am receiving this Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 during every cold/warm boot. It pops up even after a complete powerdown for overnight and boot up the next day. Further, the boot itself has become very slow - shows blank screen until the Thinkpad logo is displayed, followed by which the error message pops up. Thanks in advance for pointers!!! P.S: I looked up in the community for similar errors - only couple found and no solutions.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thinkpad Edge E530 - i5-3210M -upgraded 8GB RAM - 750 GB, 16GB mSATA HDD Performance Booster

Answer:Edge e530 - Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 - press escape to continue

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Answer:2102 Detection error

Hi, TTdeSouza

I did some quick research to see how others have gone about fixing this error. I found this thread here from a Lenovo employee on the same issue. According to the employee, someotherguy, the issue is indicative of a hardware fault. Due to this, I would recommend giving Lenovo Support a call at your earliest convenience.

Hope it helps,

I got a new T440s with a standard disk hard drive. My coworker gave me a Crucial SSD 512GB drive to swap in its place. I imaged the current drive on to the SSD and inserted it. Upon boot, before the boot sequence I receive the 2102 error. There is nothing in the SSD2 slot, as we didn't buy this option. The theory in my workplace (tech firm) is that I may have accidentally turned power on while swapping the drive while no drive was in the primary slot. How/where in the bios do I keep the machine from looking into this slot to boot? Currently what happens is the error is thrown and I have to hit escape to boot windows. This is a minor inconvenience, there is no loss of functionality, but when powering up on a dock or rebooting, it requires user presence. Thanks for your help.

Answer:2102: Detection error on SSD2 (M.2)

t440s might have three slots for drives - one sata III 2,5" and two m.2 slots. Usually new laptops with HDD are shipping with cache m.2 SSD which is placed in the 3rd slot. Since error 2102 is msata drive detection related I'd suggest to check out your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

I just bought a T61 with Vista Home. When it starts, it takes 2 min to pass the page "Thinkpad - interrupt the normal start, pressing the blue ThinkVantge". After refreshing, the screen turns black with the message as follow: "Error 2102 HDD1 (Hard disk drive in Ultrabay) initialization errorPress Escape to continue" Once I press the "Escape", it looks like the real Vista start up kicks in. By the way, my T61 was not on any docking station. I tried firmware update. It did not help.  Thanks for your help in advance. -Melanie

Answer:T61/Vista Error 2102 during start up

Hey Melanie did you find a solution to this problem? I am having the same issue, the weird thing is that on my first try, I was able to access the hard drive in the ultrabay, windows even installed the device driver for the hard drive.  Now when I reboot with the ultrabay adapter installed, I got the same error as you had, when I insert the ultrabay adapter when windows is already running (hot swap), it does not detect the hard drive.  I am using a hitachi 80GB SATA hard drive.  Can anyone help me with this?  I have a T61 and using windows vista business. Thanks in advance guys!Message Edited by lloyd on 02-10-2009 04:58 AM

I just bought a W550s, and have just installed all the current windows updates, added my antivirus, office suite, adobe suite, winrar. That's pretty much everything I've done to it so far. Just booted it up after installing most recent windows update. Came up on the black screen "2102 detection error for SSD2" Press ESC to proceed I've had lenovos (Thinkcentres, thinkpads), but never really had these kind of issues. What is the best process to get a hold of support? Nothing wrong with phone support, but I've found myself clicking through the suitable options and being on the phone with a software company that has no real relation to Lenovo, so I'd prefer to at least start a ticket/investigation by email/online.

Answer:W550s: 2102 detection error for SSD2

Hi Lolenick,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per my knowledge the issue is indicating to mSATA drive which will serve as SSD2 and it is giving error. I?d suggest you to look at your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

Hope this helps!!

You have a brand new system. You should call tech support and have them resolve it.A support tech can remote into your system and fix it. Also they can check for other issues which may be the cause. This save a lot of time.

ok, well what would be the better setup?

-1 74 gb raptor 10k rpm + 160gb seagate 7200 sata
OR
-2x 160 gb seagate sata in raid 0

Thanks, and explain y it would be better

Answer:1 rator+ 1 7200 sata or 2 7200 in raid0?

i'd go with d first option. coz if u combine 2 for use in sata raid 0, n if 1 fails, d other 1 is gone. with the first option, u can use the raptor for important things such as system files and games. in that way, ur games and d OS will load much faster. u can use the other 160GB drive for other things that does not require higher speeds.

I currently have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA 1.5Gb/s 160GB HDD. I'm thinking about getting another drive and setting up a RAID 0. My question is, do I have to get another 7200.7 or will a 7200.9 (at 3.0Gb/s, everything else is the same I believe) work too?
Thanks in advance.

You can use different drives for RAID. The performance will be limited by the worst device of course.

Hi there, New to the forum, hello! I recently bought a Y500 laptop from Lenovo Canada. I was satisfied with the performance but wanted a boost. I started looking for the removable ultrabay graphics card (GN36) on the Canadian website. I couldn't find it but over the next week or so, all vendors seemed to be missing this graphics card. I called into Lenovo support and was told that they couldn't find the product on the system as well. They said they'd call me if there were any updates...but for now it seems like the product is discontinued. Anyone have any luck getting a hold of one of these? I'd love to run them both together in SLI but if Lenovo has decided to discontinue this...the ultrabay option has lost a lot of interest for me.

I've recently bought the Y500 with the dual graphics cards, and I need to obtain a CD/DVD drive. I saw on this post -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Y500-Ultrabay/td-p/1155205 that both parts may be interchangeable. Currently, the Y500 part is not available on the Lenovo store (that I can find), but the Y400's is. Does anyone know from first-hand experience if  them being interchangeable is correct? I'd rather buy from Lenovo then find the Y500 model elsewhere.

Answer:Are the Y500 CD/DVD Ultrabay and Y400 CD/DVD Ultrabay parts interchangeable?

If anyone knows the answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, this is my problem guys, and i have searched everywhere and nothing is been solved.

I have an very old US Robitics 4 port router and a Linksys SPA 2102 VOIP adapter connected to the Router.

So what i am trying to do, that i could of done before is portforward. The thing that bugs me, is that i get 3 Different ip's from nowhere. !st ip shows when i go into command prompt, and shows my ip, then one shows on my router (probably my lan ip) and the VOIP shows my real ip. So my question is how do i portward through these 2 objects and get decent connection with Uttorent etc...

Answer:Router+ Linksys SPA 2102 VOIP-Portforward

Hi

Your PC has an IP address, such as 192.168.1.5
Your router has an IP address, usually similar to your PC address such as 192.168.1.1
Your actual address is assigned by your ISP, this could be 212.112.234.45.

To port forward you tell the router to send port requests to the IP of your PC.

So to port forward for utorrent you find out which ports are needed (such as 6165)then in your router port forwarding section you tell it to forward requests for port 6165 (example remember) to the IP of the PC 192.168.1.5.

See

www.portforward.com for further help.

I have two HP Minis; a 2102 and a 110-1025DX. Both are running Win 10 Pro, and have similar programs loaded. For a few reasons I would like to be able to swap the hard drives between these two devices, but I'm not sure how feasible that would be. My questions are:Would the Win 10 Pro OS be recognized by the new devices? Could I simply  change the Product Key after swap to "force" an acceptance?Drivers: I do not know how the drivers might be loaded. They both use HP Assistant, could I simply run that to load the best drivers? The "detail" issue here is my MS Office programs; one of my main goals is to move Office 2010 Pro Plus to the other Mini, but I have lost the installation media. I've been told Office 2010 Pro Plus cannot be downloaded from MS like other Office products.Anything that I'm missing? Thanks in advance for help on this question.

Answer:Swapping hard drive on HP Minis (2102/110-1025DX)

If both laptops are licensed to run Windows 10 i.e. are "activated" you should be able to swap the hard drives. Windows 10 is activated by Microsoft servers and they should recognize that the transplant host (I will use donor and host to refer to the original computer that had the hard drive and the computer where it ends up, respectively) is OK to run Windows 10. Just to be sure I would have the Key for the host handy but you should not need to use it. Drivers will likely not be an issue as netbooks all are essentially the same hardware. If you are worried, drivers for the host system are held in a C:\swsetup folder on the hard drive which you could copy to use if needed in the host system after transplant.  The issue is the activation of the Office program. I am not as familar with how its licensing and activation works but I think there may be a copyright or EULA issue with what you are trying to do.  You can buy MS Office 2010 Pro Plus for not much cost: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-office-2010-Pro-Plus-licence-Key-download-link-digital-Edition-/152244963867?hash=item237281ca1b:g:6xwAAOSwLnBX3Qgk http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-Office-2010-Professional-Plus-Full-version-For-32-64BIT-D-L-KEY-/262623934769?hash=item3d259b3931:g:AwgAAOSwQNRXME2X

Hi,

I have looked through previous posts and some come very close to answering my query but as an unforced error at my end is not acceptable I think it best I ask the experts.

Scenario:

My old (very old) machine running XP snuffed it (MB burnt out). As it wasn't cost effective to get a new MB/CPU combo vs a new machine I opted for the new Advent 2102. Cheap and cheerful and it works well.

I also bought a Dynamode caddy so I could transfer all data via usb from the 'old' Cdrive to a folder on the new machine. This worked reasonably well although for some reason some files were deemed outside of current permissions (seemed to be the odd zip file and modelsupport folders in Delphi projects. I can live with that but I would like to find out why)

So, I have a new Win7 machine and have not lost any data. However what I am now faced with a reinstall of Delphi 2005, Indy and whatever 3rd party components I had and all the updates upgrades etc since the original install.

This can be a pain to get right.

Objective:

Therefore I want to find out how to Dual Boot into either the current new Win7 drive or the old XP drive (which I can connect via the usb caddy or internally using the unused IDE port of the G31MX-K MB in the Advent)

What steps do you recommend I take?

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm at my wits end with this darn hard disk. I've troubleshooted through a few different problems, now I have this one. When attempting to install the drive using Data Lifegaurd I get the following error.

"An NTFS partition has been detected that has an invalid signature. This usually indicates an unformatted partition. All NTFS partitions must be properly formatted in order to proceed. Use NT disk administrator."

Ok, now...first of all, I run XP. I don't even know what disk administrator is. Second, I've disconnected all other drives. This drive is on an ATA 133 pci card. Jumper settings are correct. (middle jumper for master on first channel of ATA bus)

Can anyone help??

Answer:Help with WD 120 gig 7200

Hi

I'll try giving this a shot until someone who knows for sure comes along.

I believe XP uses the same file format as NT ergo the NTFS problem. I believe you need to use your XP boot disk (they do have them don't they?) to format you HD to proper format.

At least that's the way I seem to remember you do it in NT.

Question: 7200.10 vs 10k

So I plan to upgrade my system a little bit, i currently have 2 150 gig sata II in a striping raid. and a 320 gig for all my important files, data. i'm thinking of replacing my raid with a 10k hard drive or i heard the 7200.10 was pretty good, is raid even worth it? or should i just have one hard drive and keep most data on the 320 gig?

Answer:7200.10 vs 10k

A pair of WD Raptor 10k RPM drives in a RAID-0 array will certainly be faster than any single disk configuration, the question is how much are you willing to spend for the speed.

Question: Hp 7200

I keep having issues about printer going offline. Before someone tells me to right click and select printer online I don't have one. I already done a search for this problem and see I'm not the only one with this issue. I currently have 4 computers up and running, with vista on 1, xp on 2, and windows 7 on the newest one. I have made the connection that if power is lost to the printer,or if printer goes into sleep mode is when it seems to happen.Through my searches I found that I have to go and change the ip address in the properties box and sometimes this isn't so easy. This sux it would be bad enough on 1 computer but 4 ! I was also told to go to the printer itself and turn the automatic to manual in the network settings well I found that but have not be able to switch it over to manual. This is more than likely whats causing the problem, since the IP address seems to be diffrent each time I have to get it back online. Can someone please give me a simple soultion to this problem ? With some reason why this is happening, this time of year with all the storms we lose power quite alot, maybe a small back up gas generator near the printer desk would be the answer. I'm ready to chunk this HP piece of crap out the window.

I'm looking to spend up to $200 on a new hard drive for my laptop. My laptop can only take one HDD at a time unless I remove my optical drive and being that I play games on this thing, that is not happening. I tend to download a lot and a 500 GB HDD which came with my laptop is just not enough. I do not want a 5200 or 5400 RPM HDD, I want a 7200 RPM.

Newegg does not have what I'm looking for this time. Being that there are 3TB HDDs for desktops, I'd think that there would exist somewhere a 1 TB 7200 RPM drive.

I was able to upgrade my old phenom to 2.4ghz from 2.2 but now when I try any OC'ing with the new processor I do not even get a post. I even reset the bios defaults and chaning the frequency to 240 which would under clock it to 2.4 ghz. I just wanted to see what happened and I also did not even get a post. The only time it will boot is if everything is on default settings. Any ideas here? Thanks in Advance!

Answer:Upgrading HDD with 7200 RPM

I have upgraded several portable PC with faster HDD and always got a performance boost. I guess there should be no problem, but I cannot guarantee it. Beware of two dangers : static electricity (touch a metal grounded part before working on your PC) and the pins of HDD that can be bent easily and be broken. Also check beforehand if it's a ATA or SATA drives. Interface are different, as are connectors. Merle1.

- less crash?

Question: 5400 vs 7200 RPM

I've got some drives that I'm working on what the best way to utilize them would be:
320 GB 5400 RPM (5)
250 GB 7200 RPM (4)
I plan on using two of the 250s as OSs for two computers. I thought about how I could best utilize the other two and it got me thinking about my laptop. It has an 80 GB drive that I can quickly loose space on if I'm not careful (no, I can't just go out and buy a new one because money is tight). So, I thought about whether or not I could utilize the USB ports to use the drive as an external. My question is is there any benefit to running a 7200 RPM drive over a USB 2 port compared with, let's say, one of the 5400s?

Answer:5400 vs 7200 RPM

Not really.

USB 2.0 seek/read/write will be a bottleneck before disk RPM factors.

I am going to buy a 1 TB SSD for my laptop, I have 2 bays for hard drives on my laptop so I am thinking of replacing my Seagate 1 TB HDD 5400 RPM but don't know which is the best 7200 RP one to go for and if would be worth it?

Answer:What is the best 7200 RPM HDD for laptops?

Can't say if they are the best, but Hitachi's 7200's are well renowned. Have been using many of them (320's & 500's) for years with zero problems. My last addition, a 1TB works very well, & heat and noise is fine (but it's new here, got no long term user report).

Any 7200 is speedwise not a big revolution compared to a 5400, does feel somewhat snappier but if your current hd is ok, evaluate to keep it, especially as you'll get the large ssd which will probably do most of the active work and the hd will probably be mostly for storage.

is there a noticeable speed and performance difference between an SATA 100gb 5400rpm HD and a SATA 100gb 7200rpm HD? besides the speed does a 5200 rpm hd increase battery life when compared to a 7200 rpm hd? or is this all a marketing gimmick to make more money from a laptop?

Answer:5400rpm hd vs. 7200 rpm hd

To be honest, unless you are running a LOT of apps or other stuff at the same time, you probably wont notice the difference. Yes, a 7200 is faster, but not by THAT much. It will only help if you have a lot going on and need faster seek times.

Just my 2c worth (he says, with a 200G 7200rpm SATA drive...lol...but I play games and d/l a lot...)

A 7200RPM drive is roughly 25-30% faster than a 5600RPM drive. This is because of the faster rotation.

I have a question. I know a 7200 RPM SATA hard drive is supposedly faster than a 5400 RPM SATA hard drive. And an I5-430 is faster than a I3-330m.

But is an I5-430 with 5400 RPM hard drive worth $100 more than an I3-330 with a 7200 RPM? Or in other words, is the performance improvement of the I5 to the I3 negated if the Hard drive speed is slower? Just curious.

Answer:Difference between an I3 7200 RPM and I5 5400 RPM

Good question - unfortunately it's hard to say - yes the 5400rpm drive will slow you down a little with th i5 430, but personally I'd paid the extra $100 for a superior chip.

Besides, a laptop/netbook HDD is far easier to replace than a CPU.

i am thinking about putting 2 of these Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250gb hard drives in the computer i'm building. I'm rambling let me get to the point. Is it a smart move to sacrifice ncq for perpendicular recording? thanks for all the feedback.

Answer:Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

By perpendicular, do you mean RAID mirroring? If so, that's a motherboard BIOS setting and has little to do with the drives. Seagate makes a great drive and backs it by the best warranty in the business (as far as I know) with a five year warranty. I think NCQ is available on many Seagate drives, from 120gb and up... Personally, I have noticed little difference in NCQ versus non-NCQ drives....

I just acquired this old machine and thought it would be fun to get her going.
It's not exactly the duel processor setup I've been dreaming of, but it is technically a duel processor system

My problem is this...I've removed the PCI SCSI card and disabled the onboard SCSI, enabled the onboard IDE and hooked up a rom and a drive to each IDE channel. I'm booting up to the rom but it will not pickup my hard drive at all.

HD master CH 1 / Rom master CH 2 - Rom boots to setup, no hardrive present
HD master, Rom slave on CH 1 - nothing detected
HD master, Rom slave on CH 2 - nothing detected

Does anyone have an idea what's going on here? Bios being a pain and not letting go of the SCSI maybe? The bios is already updated to the most recent available (Phoenix bios 4 v6.00.10). The system is pretty much setup that way it appears. Even with SCSI disabled as best I can in bios, it still asks me to hit Ctrl+A to run the adaptec SCSI setup utility the first time you power up. If you do nothing it passes this and continues back to the post screen, then you continue from there. After this it will pickup the rom and wont ask again unless I mess around in bios. I've tried about everything I can think of, but honestly I don't know alot about SCSI, just some basics. I'd like to find a way to get the old girl going again if possible and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Replace 500 GB 7200 HD with SSD Drive

Welcome to the forum!

A cache drive is completely useless when combined with a SSD. You may as well remove it.

I always strongly advise against cloning from a spinning drive to a SSD. Do a fresh install on that EVO and then optimize it to your liking - that's what I would do anyway.

Good luck.

Ok, I use nothing but Seagate drives in all of my machines, mostly due to their newfound-damn-near-silent drives, and the fact they run so much cooler than WD's and come with a 5 year warranty.

Now, my question is....

WHAT DOES THE DARN .x MEAN IN THE 7200.7---7200.8---7200.9 etc etc

I know in the serial number, example
ST380817AS

ST means Seagate Technologies
3 means form factor
80817 means size in formatted MB
AS means interface---SATA in this case

but I cannot determine what the Barracuda 7200.x means. where x is either 7, 8 or 9.

nothing adds up on this page as to what the number could mean. It doesn't seem to denote Db, or cache, or seek time or anything that I can find that explains the existence of that x factor

Answer:Seaget HDD Series 7200.x ?!?!

Its the "generation" of the drive series, with the 7200.9's being the ninth and latest gneration of their desktop 7200 RPM drives.

Hi, Yes you can. With same amount of cache, 7200RPM HDD's are faster than 5400RPM HDD's. Regards.

Can anyone please tell me if a 7200 RPM, standard SATA disk drive is compatible with the IdeoPad. Understand that it is not currently offered, but these a pre-configured packages. My question is will a 7200 RPM SATA drive be supported by the system. Thanks!

Answer:7200 RPM Disc Drive

Sure.If the drive is SATA it is compatible.4200/5400/7200 - doesn't matter.I do not know your circumstancies of your country warranty, but you may loose it.Also NOVA function will not be available, since it is HDD-pinned.Also you must understand, that using 7200-drive will cause a bit more noise and heat.HTH

I need some advice on what to overclock it to. What do you guys recommend for the memory/core speeds on a 7200 64 mb sdram chip?

Thanks,

-Kyle.

Answer:Overclocking Radeon 7200

Since the Radeon 7200 runs at a core and memory clock of 166MHz (I can't believe I know that...) than you probably could get it stable around 183MHz, but you may be able to pump it above that. Overclockability varies from card to card, especially ones with good cooling. I assume you have the stock cooler. In that case, if you don't have a heatsink over your memory, I wouldn't try to raise the memory clock above 180-183MHz.

Hi,

Picked up a Portege 7200 running XP dirt cheap, it's currently got 128Mb RAM which I want to replace with a 256Mb, where the hell can I find one that isn't priced the same as a new laptop???

Thanks!

Lee

Answer:Portege 7200 256Mb RAM - Where from????

Hi

The notebook is an oldie and all parts devices are also not more highly available!
The notebook supports 144-Pin PC100 SODIMM memory modules.
I found one module for about ?63

Check this page:
http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=5388&ft=m&st=3

I would recommend searching on some Online shop sites for best offer or to get a second hand one from Ebay?

Hey! I'm looking at two specs here, one with normal HDD with 7200 rpm and one HDD with SSD cache of 8 GB with 5400 rpm. WHich is better??

Answer:HDD with 7200 rpm or HDD + SSD 8 GB CACHE 5400 RPM

I would prefer SSD. SSD is more durable, faster, lighter, and quieter.
SSD use less power at peak load than hard drives, less than 2W vs. 6W for an HDD.
But of course, SSD is more expensive as you know.
So if money is not too tight, you can get a SSD.

Ok, so i had an Aopen CDRW4048 and everytime i inserted a CD Or a CDR or CDRW to play, the green light would keep blinking, and the disc wouldnt load. So i pulled out an old HP 7200+ that i had, and it seemed as if it were going to work. It reads discs, except for CD-r's and RW's. In Windows Media player, when i try to burn a disc, it says there are no CDRW drives present. But when i try to burn in Nero, it gives me a "calibration area full" message. I looked this up and apparently i have to update my firmware, however whenever i try to it says "unable to detect CD-Writer plus." I did some research and apparently it has something to do with a dll file called cdr4dll.dll. I downloaded it and followed advice saying to put it in my System folder. I tried running the firmware update again and it still did the same thing. Can anybody help me with either the Aopen or the HP Drive? I WANT TO BURN CD's AGAIN!

THanks in advance

Hi all,I just upgraded my T60 RAM to 3GB and working fine.Current HDD on my system is 80GB, 5200 RPM. When googled, I noticed that not recommended to upgrade to 7200 RPM,  because it will generate more heat, vibration and battery drains faster. Is this True? What's your opinions? Thanks in Advance

Answer:Which one to choose for T60? HDD 5400 or 7200 RPM?

A good quality 7200rpm drive such as Hitachi or Seagate will work vibration-free, and will not decrease battery life by any meaningful margin. I also had experiences where 5400rpm drives ran hotter than their 7200rpm counterparts. There's absolutely no reason not to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive in my not-so-modest opinion. Hope this helps.

I am in the process of planning a new Gaming PC build and I ran into a snag, and can't find any tests online to back up my decision.

For a gaming PC which of these similar cost hard drive setups would offer the best mix of speed and reliability:
Raid-0 2x 500gb SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
Raid-0 4x 160gb SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
150GB Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM SATA150 16MB Cache

I'm in no hurry to complete my build, I was also considering a solid state Raid-0 if the prices becomes reasonable any time soon.

I would have to add a storage drive if I went with the WD Raptor.

Answer:Raid-0 @ 7200 vs Single @ 10,000

RAID-0 is not a reliability technique; Raid-1 is the fault tolerant solution, but even it needs backups;

Without an adequate backup solution, NEVER use raid-0 as any failure will immediately
force you into a reinstall.

I'm planning to replace original 100GB 4200 rpm HDD within P30 with new 7200 rpm model.

I'm looking at any 2.5', P-ATA, 100GB, 7200 rpm HDD model I can find.
On my list are these 3 models:

- Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (ST910021A)
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/personal/family/0,1085,669,00.html
- Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 (HTS721010G9AT00)
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k100/7k100.htm
- Hitachi Travelstar E7K100 (HTE721010G9AT00)
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/e7k100/e7k100.htm

I'm concerned mostly on overheating problem.

Is there anyone who has experience with this HDD?s in P30?

Answer:Satellite P30-116 - 7200 rpm HDD upgrade?

OK I noticed that E7K100 has working temperature 40C and 7K100 has 55C. This eliminates E7K100.
Now I have to select from:
- Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (ST910021A)
- Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 (HTS721010G9AT00)

The bottom dropped out of prices on blank CDs here recently. With rebate, the cost of a Fuji CD-R 80 min/700 MB disk (complete with jewel case) is $.39(Cdn) or about $.26(US). I don't know how that compares to prices in the rest of the world, but it seems pretty cheap to me.

Anyway, I've never used anything but 74 min/650 MB blank CDs before, so after I bought a whole bunch of these 700 MB disks, I thought I'd check the HP site.
http://support.hp.com/showpage/id/lpg40817.html
It clearly states that these disks will NOT work with the 7200 series burners because of both hardware and software limitations. Should I take that as the absolute truth?

Is there anyone out there who has an HP 7200 burner who has successfully used the larger capacity 80 min/700 MB blank CDs?

I'll be able to take these disks back to the store if I can't use them, and I can probably just exchange them for the smaller 74 min/650 MB ones. However, if I can, I'd like to be able to use the larger capacity disks for both audio and data storage applications. Thanks for any feedback.

-Patrick

just installed the 120Gb 2.5" 7200rpm SATA 300 SEAGATE ST3120823AS into the laptop replacing a Toshiba 60Gb and it seems theres a noise coming from the hard-drive... im certain its the noise of it spinning but should it really be that noticeable? the slightly slower toshiba was completely inaudible... its quite annoying really... I may have to send it back and get another 5400rpm SATA150 drive - slower but quieter

I dunno if its worth sacrificing the silence for a small boost in performance...

whats others thoughts on this?

thanks

Im about to buy a new notebook, and Im trying to get a quiet fast system for 3D drawing. How much difference could I expect with a 7200 rpm instead of 5400? Im talking about speed and reduce battery life. Is it worth the extra money and/or less capacity?
Btw any experiences on the Intel Turbo Memory? Thanks

Answer:5400 or 7200 rpm on new Notebook?

If it were me I'd get the 7200 rpm HDD. The speed is substantial, and the extra noise is minimal.

Hello Toshiba-Community!

I own a Toshiba Portege 7200 with the following configuration:

- P3 600 MHz
- 320 MB RAM
- 12GB HDD

However, the laptop is running well, but the CPU is pretty slow.

So I wanted to _upgrade the CPU_ with a faster P3.

My questions are:
Is this possible?
What are the requirements?

I searched a lot in the internet but I did not find a solution for this question.

Do you have one?? :-)

thx a lot in advance!

Answer:Is CPU upgrade for Portege 7200 available?

Usually such upgrades are not easy and in most case to possible and not advisable.

In most cases the different CPU can cause troubles with the BIOS.
Furthermore the higher CPU speed would produce more heat dissipation which could lead to an overheating.

Therefore it?s not advisable to upgrade the CPU

I'm having Portege 7200. It was just given away to me. Thus, there's no documentation or manuals.
I'm interested in upgrading its old 4GB HDD to something more modern. Can anyone tell me what could be done for that? I mean - if standard 2.5" HDD is Ok, is there any motherboard/BIOS limitation as to the maximum size, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Portege 7200 - HDD upgrade

Hi

The user manual can be downloaded from the Toshiba European page;
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/home.do?service=EU&from=http%3A//www.toshiba-europe.com/

Here you should go to Support & Downloads -> Toshiba User Manual.
In the download form you should choose;
Archive -> Portege Archive -> Portege 7xxx -> Portege 7200

Maybe you will find some info in the user manual.

But I would like to provide some details too.
In my knowledge many BIOS versions supports an HDD size limitation. I mean not every HDD size is supported.
I have goggled a little bit and found out that the Toshiba MK1214GAP HDD can be used with the Portege 7200. It?s a 12GB HDD which supports the ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4 interface.

Maybe could test it.

looking to upgrade hdd on t400,  is the 7200 noticibly louder than the 5400?  Is it worth it do buy the ssd now or should I wait for a price drop?

Answer:320hdd 7200 or 128 ssd, any suggestions?

When I purchased my T500 a few months ago it was not offered with a 7200rpm 320gb, so I ordered it with the cheapest drive and bought a Western Digital drive, and installed it myself.  It is very quiet, with only very quiet sounds when actively working, like when defragging. It was a huge speed boost, as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280 I know SSDs are getting a lot of attention now, but I feel that the quality SSD drives are still too much money for the benefit gained. Don Mannino

I have recently bought 80 gig drive 7200, I bought so that I could capture DV image into a video editing software, pinnacle studio. initially it didn't work, the it did. Anyway It was working ok for a while. I had a problem with the computer a while back and it wouldn't start up correctly. I decided to import (Import? wrong terminology?) the old settings from a previous date. This was done by holding down del when the computer started up. The 80 gig drive is too slow to capture DV. The software detects the 80 gig drive and says it is only 3800. It says that it needs to be at least 4444. How can I make the Software realise that it is actually faster ie. 7200. The original Hard drive is 20 gig and is too slow to capture image. It is around 3800. The 20 gig is drive C and 80 gig drive D.

I know it does work as it has worked before. Why won't it work now?

Please help.

PS I have also re-installed the Pinnacle studio DV software.

Answer:320GB 7200 rpm in T400?

I ran a Hitachi 320GB 7200RPM drive in my T400 for a couple of years.  I'm now running a 500GB 7200RPM Hitachi.  Should be no problem as long as you get a 9.5mm SATA drive.

Depending on your OS and Service Pack level, you may need to do a little tweaking if you end up with an Advanced Format drive.

Okay, so the included Windows 7 driver works but it doesn't have the scan drivers included. I have downloaded the Vista x64 driver (which does work in Vista 64 FWIW) but I can't get it to install properly... It gets to the screen where it asks how I'm connecting, I say "Network" and it just gets hung there in an endless cycle.

If I can't get this to work, I'm gonna have to down-grade back to Vista - and I don't want to!

Any ideas?

Answer:HP 7200 Network Printing

You will not believe this. i tried to install the original CD software and it failed. HP web site said they will support W7 when it goes public. So I just plugged the 7210 all-in-one printer in and turned it on. Windows 7 was great. It found the printer and the supported scan fuctions.

Good luck to MS and Windows 7. I have enjoyed Vista and I am finding W7 to be a wonderful blast. I have been running it now for 48 hours.

Question: 7200 rpm hard disk

Hi everyone,I'm currently operating a business with Windows NT 5.1 database software. When accessing the database via the dedicated sever the software freezes on all the machines. The Hard disk in the server is 7200rpm which I'm told is not enough and it is PC speed which is inadequate for a server. Is this the case and should it be upgraded?

Answer:7200 rpm hard disk

I doubt it. You can see min specs for server 2008 and it doesn't mention the hard disk speed.click here

Answer:Considering a new 7200 rpm hard drive

Having a faster harddrive is more expensive, more power hungry and more noise, but of course you get faster access speed. So you decide which is the top priority for you.

I can get ahold of another 2 120gig seagate quite cheap, well about 20 (GBP) less than normal. so wat kind of performance increase would having 4 of these in riad0 (i already have 2) and they give me a transfer rate of 92mb/s.

I know the speed increase would only be in loading windows or loading games.

also when ppl say they can boot their computer in xx seconds where do they stop the timer? cos i can be at my login screen in about 7 seconds max but it wont of loaded my windows settings :s

Answer:4 7200 drive in raid0

I start mine when I push the button to turn it on and end it when it has finished loading everything, and it takes 33 seconds :P

I have no experience of using raid, so I can't answer the main question.
