Left button, trackpoint and touchpad

Question: Left button, trackpoint and touchpad

My left button, both on the trackpoint and touchpad does not respond. I've been forced to use a USB wired mouse to get the left click to work.I did try an MS wireless mouse in the USB port, that doesn't work either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Left button, trackpoint and touchpad

I find it difficult to believe not one reply, nada, zip, nothing. I would expect at least one reply to my question from Lenovo. Difficult working without the left tracking button not working and the left touchpad button not working button. Neither of which works. Do I need factory service or what?

I am used to using external mouse with left hand, but using Trackpoint with right hand. However, in the UltraNav utility, when I swap the left/right button for external mouse, the Trackpoint is also affected by this swapping. What I want is external mouse for Left hand and Trancpoint for right hand. Howeve I can't set that for Trackpoint specifically. Can anybody help me on this? So many thanks!

hello,  I was wondering if anyone know how to fix this little (annoying) problem I have with the T61.Basically, I use the trackpoint more than the touchpad and therefore I use the two trackpoint buttons right below the space bar. My problem is, the left trackpoint button makes this *click* sound every time I press on it.  The right button is perfect and is extremely quiet, but the left button sounds like plastic is snapping every time I press on it.  its almost like the button is caught against something and makes the click/snap noise when you press on it. any suggestions? its really annoying to have such a quiet keyboard and laptop, only to have it ruined by this loud snap/click. thanks!

Answer:snap noise from trackpoint left button

Hello, Have you checked with Lenovo support?  Perhaps the keyboard is defective and needs to be replaced. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

I have upgraded my old T410i with some extra RAM and an SSD. The system works great and fast. There is one problem. I have noticed that although my trackpoint and right and middle button (above trackpad) work like the should the left button (above trackpad) doesn't. I thought this has to work like the left mouse button or the left button under the trackpad but it doesn't. I have the latest bios version 1.45 installed and the latest drivers. I have also tried to detach the keyboard and attached it again. After that I tried to disable the trackpoint in the bios and enable it again. This doesn't help either. Maybe it is a defective key because all the other functions and keys do work. Is there something overlook?

Hi All, I am very upset as my new x61's TrackPoint and Touchpad Button are not working at all... This is my first Thinkpad Notebook. I really have no idea why is that? I have downloaded and installed the driver for Trackpoint and system reboots. And i update the drive from device manager. But the problem still existed.... I am so disappointed... Is there anyone have the same problem? Or can someone give me some help on this!??? By the way, i am using vista business version of OS.... Thanks J.

Answer:TrackPoint and touchpad button are not working, HELP~~~

Wowzer J, that sounds frustrating. It is odd if you have a brand new X61 that the TrackPoint is not working. Did you just buy it from Lenovo? What exactly do you mean by "not working at all"? Even if the Lenovo drivers are not working, Vista includes drivers which will enable you to use the TrackPoint. One of the tricky things abou the Lenovo software downloads is that many of them require you to download, double click the downloaded software to extract it, then navigate to the extracted software folder to run the setup.exe to install it. The TrackPoint drivers first extract to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TRACKPT.V32. You have to go there to run setup.exe. I'm also assuming that you really have an X61 and mis-spoke when you mentioned Touchpad. The X61 does not have a touchpad.

Hi,I've a Lenovo T61 laptop. All of a sudden the left click has stopped responding on trackpoint, touchpad & mouse. Through none of the options the left click is working. Tried googling out but found no workable solutions. Please help. Laptop OS is Windows Vista 32-BIT. Thanks & Regards,Gangadhar

Answer:Issue with left click on trackpoint, touchpad and mouse - Lenovo T61

Hello,

A few things to try:

?  Create a new user account, login using that and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, then it is due to software running under your user account.
?  Start Windows in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, it was due to an application which runs on startup.
?  Boot the computer from a Linux Live CD/USB and see if the problem still occurs.  If it does, then the problem is not due to the operating system and you are dealing with a hardware issue.

In the case of the latter, the usual fix would be to replace the keyboard.

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

Computer:

HP Pavilion dv7
Win7 Professional x64

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

Answer:G505s left button touchpad

hi DarkK05,

Welcome to the Forums.

From that image, it looks like the left clicker is continuously held down.

Can you try to boot in Safe Mode and observe the mouse functionality (tap, left / rightclick). If the touchpad works fine, try these steps:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel (icon views) > Programs and Features and uninstall the Touchpad Driver (Synaptics or ELAN). then reboot in normal mode.

2. Reinstall the Touchpad driver from the D:\Drivers\Touchpad folder or from the G505s drivers page then reboot.

Let me know how it goes.

I turned on my 6 months old Acer Aspire One as usual and realised that something was wrong with my mouse. The left button simply doesn't work. Neither does tapping the touchpad. Nothing happens no matter how many times I push or tap. I can move the cursor around just fine and the right mousebutton still works. I can also plug in a USB mouse and use that instead.
I have checked the mouse properties. Under the tab "Hardware" the mouse is listed "Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad", and the unit status says it works correctly. I also checked the preferences, and both tapping and buttons are activated and set to normal.
I have tried restarting, removing the battery and Fn-F7 without any luck.
I have also tried switching preferences to left-handed - that gave a funny result: Both the right button and tapping the touchpad functioned like a right-click except now they could also for instance close a window and open the start-menu. The left-button still didn't have any function what so ever.
Hope someone can help me.

this has happened a couple of times lately. It goes into this mode where if I hit the Home key, it opens a new tab. If I try to type in the search box, it opens the History sidebar. If I click on a link, it opens in a new tab. Just closing Firefox won't make it stop, I have to shut down the computer and restart. It just started doing this a few days ago.  When this happens - and it's both Firefox and IE when it happens - you can't type in the browser window, the home button opens a new tab, if you go to the Win 8.1 Start screen and click on a tile with the left touchpad button, it doesn't open the tile, it places a checkmark on the tile. Can't find any key to cancel it. ANybody have an idea what's going on?

I have a brand-new EliteBook 840 running Windows 10. The left touchpad button sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It's like this: If I click a second time (or a third time) with the left button, without having moved the cursor (not double click, but two separated clicks), then the computer doesn't respond to the click. If I click by tapping on the touchpad area (instead of pressing the button) then everything is fine. But I don't like tapping! If I click with an external mouse connected via USB then everything is fine. If I move the cursor and then click, then it works. The problem is very annoying because each time the computer doesn't respond to the clicks, I have to move the cursor and then click again.

The left-hand button, which is below the touchpad, and is equivalent to a left mouse button, has twoproblems. The first (which I can live with) is that if I press the left hand side of thatbutton, that side stays down and the right sidecomes up (kind of like a seesaw). The second, which is more serious, and drives me crazy, is that even a very light touch or resting myfinger on that button causes the computer to act as if I have pressedthe button. I have the sensitivity set to the lowest possible in mycontrol panel, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. So thecomputer ends up doing things I do not want it to do at the time --like opening links or selecting text. The right-hand button worksjust fine.  I am using the most current UltraNav driver.

I have a NB250 10G that until a couple of days ago had worked perfectly.
However, I then found that I could not operate the netbook with the touchpad.

However, all works fine with my USB plug-in mouse.
Everything seemed to be going haywire with the touch pad, but I now know what is wrong.

The right-hand touch-pad button works fine, but the left-hand button is producing the same result as the right-hand one. In other words, I have no working left-hand button - I can't click to open any icons, I can't close down - all that happens is that I get a mini-menu appearing just as with the right-hand button.
An online note to Toshiba has so far not been answered.

Can anyone help please? John

Answer:NB250-10G - left touchpad button does not work

Hi

Maybe you should check the touchpad button configuration.
In control panel -> mouse -> device settings you will find the different settings for touchpad.
Check this? there should be a configuration option for a touchpad buttons too.

You could also try to reinstall the touchpad driver? maybe it just a software issue

My left click button appears to no longer be responsive.  I've checked the buttons settings and it is set as primary, normal drag, etc...... It doesn't appear to be a problem with the button(hardware) as I still get a strong click action, just doesn't appear to process the click logically. I searched the board and didn't find anything specific to this. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the Synaptics touchpad driver but still nothing on the left click....... Thanks. Geoff

I have an old IBM Thinkpad T42, worked great for ages. Last week the left mouse button below the touchpad stopped working. The right button still works, the touchpad still works, the nub and mouse buttons above the touchpad work, but the left buttong below the touchpad doesn't register.I took the laptop apart, removed the palmrest assembly, cleaned it up, took a look at the button and contacts, everything looked perfect.I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, no diceI removed it from device manage and let windows redetect it, still not working.I tried system Restore for a day when it was working, still not working.I checked the connections and they are all good, I did an sfc /scannow to make sure there were no corrupted system files, ran spybot and malwarebytes, all turned up nothing. So I went on eBay and plopped down $13 on a replacement palmrest. I swapped out the hardware, and it STILL doesn't work.At this point I am thinking it is some other hardware failure. I downloaded a VB program that detects any mouse click through API call, and the lower left mouse button does not trigger the API call at all, even though I replaced the hardware. The only reason I think it may be a software/OS issues is several months ago the laptop spontaneously developed this strange issue where it acted like the left click was always depressed, so the mouse was always in a "text select" mode, no matter how many times I rebooted the OS always thought a left click was being held down, even though ... Answer:Left mouse button under touchpad not working

I would boot Linux from a CD/DVD (perhaps Mint or Ubuntu) and see if the buttons work. If it doesn't and you have already replaced the complete palm rest with a good one, either the jack it plugs into on the motherboard has an issue or some part of the circuit on the motherboard that supports that circuit might be at fault. I just purchased a used replacement T41 motherboard on eBay for less than $25. Plenty more out there if you are handy with a screwdriver and download the HMM PDF file.

Hello, The left button on my Synaptics Touchpad doesn't work when I'm pressing a key on the keyboard. Initially, I thought it was a PalmCheck problem, but that feature was already disabled. The right click works fine and so does the touchpad itself. The only problem is the left button. I tried reinstalling an updated driver, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried the generic Synaptics driver and both the HP Windows 8 and 8.1 versions. They all worked fine for all touchpad functions except for the left button which still doesn't work when I'm pressing a keyboard key. I tried using a wireless mouse and the left click worked fine so the problem is only with the touchpad.

My problems are very similar to those in this thread, to which I didn't see any resolution. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/y580-touchpad-not-working/m-p/898175/highli...Anyway, I've had my Y580 for...about 12 hours now, and right out of the box the left mouse button isn't working. About 10% of the time, if you press really hard, it will work, but that's not exactly working condition.  I'm guessing this means the palmrest itself needs to be repalced, so I'm wondering how I can go about getting warranty service WITHOUT calling the phone number. Right now I have larangytis and can't talk on the phone. Moreover, there must be some other options already for the deaf/hard at hearing.Anyway, could someone please help me out with this? Also, if possible, I think this kind of information really needs to be put on the support page itself. Again, there are people who will *never* be able to call you guys on the phone. That's a problem that needs to be accomidated!

Answer:Y580 Touchpad / left mouse button not working

Well, this hasn't gotten me anywhere, so I had a friend talk to the warranty department for me on speakerphone. Lenovo is taking care of everything now, but seriously...you NEED an option for people who for some reason can't talk, or are deaf/hard at hearing. I even asked at the end of the call if there was such an option, and the rep said there wasn't. Lenovo already has 24/hr sales reps available via chat...why not have that same technology for the warranty department? Definitley unfair to someone who is permanently hearing impared or such.

I know very little about my Satellite C50-A-157 . Run on Windows 8. I am main /admin user and all of a sudden I am unable to move the mouse/cursor.. only way it seems to let me, is if I hold the left hand botton (bottom of mouse pad) down at same time, then it moves around.

But then high-lights everything.

I have tried pressing FN+F5 at same time (nothing happens) even taken battery out of back (again does not solve issue) the MOuse/arrow is just frozen on the page.. this does not happen in my partners profile, (he is another user) the mouse seems to work fine..
I thought it was that the mouse pad, had worn out (as is shiny now) but this does not explain why it only happens under my profile/user, not his?

If anyone can offer any help, much appreciated... I only stumbled across the fact, it lets me use it (if I hold in left button at same time)
Also have tried the 'Sticky keys' shift x5, again this does not do anything or clear this problem.
And have gone into control panel usinw Windows+ X and gone into troubleshooting, again, not solved the problem.

Answer:Satellite C50-A-157 - Unable to use touchpad without holding left button

.. this does not happen in my partners profile, (he is another user) the mouse seems to work fine..

Since the touchpad is still working using another user profile, I guess there must be only some software conflict.

Usually you can enable or disable the touchpad pressing F5 (or FN+F5) but you already tried this combination and this did not enable the touchpad…
So from my point of few you should simple uninstall the touchpad driver and after you have downloaded the newest touchpad driver package from Toshiba EU driver page, unzip the package and perform new touchpad driver installation…

After the installation has been finished, restart the notebook…

Good luck

Alright, so I have a relatively new Asus F3L series notebook, about eight months old now, running Windows XP (although my OS isn't really pertinent to the issue). Over the past few months, the left click button on its touchpad has been slowly dying, some days not working at all. It's definitely a hardware issue as flipping the laptop over and banging on its bottom a few times usually gets it to work again, but doing this obviously worries me (I don't want to break anything else, but nothing else works). The Asus tech support guys won't help me at all, giving me the sole option of "Return the laptop and lose all computer access for the next few months," which isn't going to happen. What could be causing this problem? Would removing and re-inserting the touchpad help at all, and if so, how would I go about it without breaking something?I thought that I'd dealt with every hardware issue under the sun, but this is a new one to me.Thankyou in advance.

Well I sure can't find where to post this.  It's not a question it's a solution to a problem that was driving me nuts and I wanted other people to know this. If your touchpad left button stops working and not for the usual reasons - this is what will make it work again.1.  Unplug power cord if plugged in 2.  Remove battery3.  Hold down start button for about 20 seconds4.  Put in battery5.  Reboot I would actually like the whole world to know this as I have googled countless times and never found a solution that works.  I have the Acer Aspire One - not one of the locations listed either. Hope this helps someone!  DonnaB

DonnaB

Dell Inspiron 17R 5737: A few months ago the left click button of the touchpad got deflated from bottom left edge and the click got sticky, if I clicked on right top edge, it worked sometimes but mostly left click stayed pressed.
I opened the laptop and found that the small plastic attached to the button, which inflates it back is broken. I tried to fix it using glue but it didn't work. As it was part of the whole Palmrest thus I ordered a new palmrest. After receiving the new palmrest, I detached the buttons circuit and touchpad circuit from the old palmrest and attached it to the new palmrest.
Strangely now, the left click button is partially sticky, if I click on the left half of the button it sticks, if I click on the right half of the button it works properly 90% of the time. The button is no more deflated and it inflates and deflates properly on clicking, there is nothing broken in the new palmrest, the clicking sound is fine, there is just 1 button for left click then how it is working differently for left half and right half, that I am not able to understand.
Next step can be to order new buttons circuit but I am not sure if this will fix the problem.
This is my work laptop thus it is effecting my work and time quite badly, any help will be highly appreciated.

The left mouse button on the U31.70 laptop I have ocassionally will stay stuck down after being pressed.  It is very intermittent and sometimes the laptop is fine for a few days, but then every so often it seems to happen a great deal.  t has done it from a few months old and it will soon be out of warranty,  I have updated the touchpad drivers, but this has made no difference. Is this a known fault with this model?

I am running Windows 10 (Creators Update) and have been doing so for quite a while on a laptop. Recently, whilst playing a game, I was clicking the touchpads left hand button (mouse1) rapidly until suddenly it stopped working completely.

In addition, tapping to activate mouse 1 is also not working with the touchpad. Right clicking is still working and mouses are also working properly.

When I looked to see what the touchpad was doing (and if any of the buttons were activated) I noticed that it says the left side button is always being clicked and held (even though I'm not pressing nor holding it)?

Is there some way of fixing this or has the hardware completely broke?

I have windows 7 and a dell inspiron 1545.

When using both my mouse and my touch pad the cursor does a left click without a button being pressed approximately every five seconds.

I have downloaded some drivers from dell but this did not solve the problem.

The computer originally ran window's vista.

Thanks guys!!!

Answer:Touchpad and mouse do left click without button being pressed

Do you want to use the mouse and the touch pad at the same time?
If not there is normally a hotkey (FN + the touchpad icon) to disable the touchpad when using the mouse.

My X1 Carbon (4th gen) runs Windows 10 (64-bit). When I click the middle TrackPoint button to scroll (with the red TrackPoint mouse), I am able to scroll, but this always opens the Windows start/search menu. If the cursor is far enough to the right of the screen, I can scroll just fine with the Start menu open, but I would like to disable whatever it is that is making the middle button open the start menu. Thanks

I've had my Z50-70 for several months, with no real problems, but there's one annoyance.  A few months ago, the left touchpad button started making a loud clicking noise.  The right button is very quiet, but the left one makes a distinct clicking sound.  It works fine, but I'd really like to get it back to how quiet it was when I first got this.  Any ideas? Thanks,Harry

The left mouse button below the touchpad on my x100e is extremely stiff, almost to the point of being difficult to press.  The center and left-most end of the button requires significantly more force to depress than the right-most end. The right mouse button doesn't have this issue, it's much easier to press and the force required to depress it is consistent on across the button. It's pretty annoying, the surprising amount of force required is enough that I frequently fail to click on things when I intend to. Why would the button behave like this?  Is this something that would be possible to fix?

hey Tiberizzle,I would recommend using the hardware maintenance manual : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM005373and you to remove the keyboard / touchpad secion to do some house cleaning . I believe there might be some grime that is causing this to occur.

Hi all

I have an Equium P300-16T with a Synaptics touchpad.
A few months back I had the following problem. As soon as I touch the touchpad, or left/right button, the icon appears to show the left button as being depressed; it would be fine up until this point. I updated the drivers, tried a system restore, checked under the touchpad button for obstructions etc and nothing changed.
I did a completely fresh reinstall of Windows ... still the same problem. I suspected a faulty touchpad, so contacted Topaz for a replacement touchpad, fitted that and still the same problem.

Sooooo ... having eliminated faulty drivers/software/hardware, I'm running out of ideas. Is there anything else I can check?

Works fine with a USB mouse.

Thanks

James

Answer:Equium P300-16T with Synaptics touchpad. Left button stuck?

> As soon as I touch the touchpad, or left/right button, the icon appears to show the left button as being depressed; it would be fine up until this point

I think you should check the settings.
In Control Panel -> Mouse -> Last tab (Advanced) -> Advanced settings button

Here you should be able to get all touchpad settings.
In my case I found interesting function in Pointer speed and tapping settings.

There is a taping area and if you enable taping you could get a access to other tapping settings.
The option is called DragLock? in my case its set to Auto release and auto release delay is set to short.
Recommend checking this!

does anyone know if there's a way to make the touchpad left/right click hard buttons easier to click? my fingers hurt after using the touchpad for an hour

Answer:Lenovo Yoga Touchpad Left/Right Click Hardware Button Sensitivity

I would suspect that the hard buttons of the touchpad cannot be changed as a mechanical attribute of the hardware. However, I might suggest that the hard buttons of the touchpad may not have to be used very often given the existence of touch alternatives. For example, I'm sure you use the left-click tap gesture often, but also a right-click gesture of simply tapping two fingers anywhere at once may be used instead of having to press the hard button from the bottom-left corner. Additionally, dragging may be accomplished with a double-tap and hold gesture on the touchpad. For instance, to move a window on the desktop, simply double-tap the window title bar but keep a finger down after the second tap. From there objects may be moved/dragged as if a physical button was held. So perhaps with the touch-only drag and right-click gestures you may rely less on use of the hard buttons, and save some strain on your fingers..?

Answer:Satellite C series Touchpad scrolls/moves when the left button is depressed

It is not easy to say what is wrong there. Maybe such behaviour is result of defective hardware.
I recommend you to reinstall operating system using HDD recovery option and check functionality again with ?factory settings?. If the same will happen again from the first moment it must be hardware malfunction and in such case you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider.

They can check it, repair if necessary and all costs will be covered by warranty.

So about a week ago my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-498E) decided to through a new one my way - the left touchpad button just ups and stops registering clicks! Being fairly handy around a screwdriver, I disassembled the entire thing down to the touchpad. Physically the touchpad and ribbon look perfect, as do the buttons themselves. All plastic is strong and no sign of aging. So I ruled that out pretty quick.

So I tested the actual physical buttons on the motherboard itself. When I press the small black right circular button, it triggers right-clicking. But the black left circular button, when pressed, doesn't trigger anything to happen. The strength of the press doesn't matter, it just refuses to register that a "click" has occured.

Has anyone heard of anything happening like this? Is it the physical button on the motherboard that's died? Or is it another part of the motherboard? I don't have the money right now to go out and buy a new laptop so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me.

I can solder moderately so if it's something I can take off and replace that'd be great but I don't know how to test to see what's went bad on the motherboard or in the button.

Thanks for any help guys.

My laptop is a three-year-old Lenovo thinkpad X300 (unfortunately its warranty just expired two weeks ago).  A couple days ago, I used Photoshop to process a lot of photos and I had to use the combination of mouse left button and the touchpad frequently.  Then suddenly the mouse left button didn?t work (but the right button is still OK and clicking on touchpad didn?t work either).  The external USB mouse still works well.  If I disable the touchpad, I can use the mouse upper left button as well as the upper right button (the mouse lower left/right buttons were disabled altogether with the disabled touchpad), and I have to use the red touchpoint to move the cursor.  I have reinstalled the operation system but the problem is still there.  I think this problem may come from the confliction of mouse left button and the touchpad.  A similar problem also happened to the earphone jack and speakers before.  At that time I used earphone to listen to music and occasionally, if I unplugged the earphone without turning off the music player, the speakers didn?t work any longer.  The problem didn?t go away after reinstalling the operation system.  I had to plug and unplug the earphone when playing music and after I repeated a couple times, then suddenly the problem was solved.  For this mouse-touchpad problem, I tried the similar strategy, pressing mouse left button together with moving my finger on touchpad continuously, howev... my touch pad has started to act strange.

the left hand mouse button stopped working completely and the right hand one only worked intermittently, and whenever i clicked on tabs, whether it was firefox, IE, Safari, or anything in the menu bar at the bottom such as a folder or anything it would close it (no im not clicking the red X)

Then suddenly after a while it would all start working again. This has happened twice now.
Completely rebooting the system does nothing it just starts suddenly and stops suddenly but the periods for which it occurs seems to be getting longer.

Also the little touchpad icon in the corner with the cross through it decided to turn its self on a few days ago and i found out the touchpad had disabled on its own and figured out how to re-activate it.

I know its not a virus as ive run lots of different anti viruses on my system, and wondering if its time to take the computer back into the shop and get a replacement as ive only had it 4 months

Its really annoying as im a photographer and rely on this laptop for phot o editing. can someone please help :)

Answer:Satellite P850-138 - left hand touchpad button stopped working completely

Hi

From my personal opinion you should not replace this notebook until you did not try some workarounds.
First of all you don?t know if its software related issue.
The point is that if its software issue, you could solve this easily recovering the notebook using the HDD recovery option.

Please try to set the notebook back to factory settings using HDD recovery.
Press F8 -> choose Repair my Computer -> HDD recovery

If the HDD recovery would not be available there, press F12 and check if there is a HDD recovery option.
After system recovery, check the functionality of the touchpad and other notebook features.

Hi All, I just picked up a Lenovo Yoga 11s and it's my first experience with windows 8 and the multitouch scrolling is driving me mad.  Is there any way to enable the multi touch gestures that begin in the zones of the left and right buttons (bottom ¼ of the touchpad)?  This problem is evident when you try to two finger scroll from the bottom of the touch pad to the top?since the gesture ?begins? in the mouse button zone, it doesn?t register and simply moves the cursor up.  So inorder to scroll up, you have to begin the gesture in the middle of the trackpad.  However, two finger scroll from the very top works as expected. I can?t find any driver settings to change this behaviour. Is this a common problem for Synaptics Windows 8 clickpads?  Are there any work arounds?  I?m not a mac user, but it seems to make common sense to expect to be able to use the entire area of the touchpad for gestuers.  Really, it?s so amazingly unintuitive that I suspect it must be related to a patent issue--there?s no way someone would intentionally program the drivers in this manner!   Thanks,

When scrolling with the index finger on my right hand I will regularly hover over and lightly touch the left button with my left index finger in anticipation of the link/button/text box etc that I am about to click on. I have always done this an never encoutered any issues on the numerous laptops I have owned and used in the past). When I do this on my newly axquired Lenovo Yoga 900 it causes the mouse pointer to lag momentarily. I have updated drivers (v19.0.17.57), I have turned off ALL Multi-Finger options (2-finger, 3-finger and 4-finger) and reduced Palm Tracking to the minimum. Is this behavior isolated to me, or are other experiencing the same behavior? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got a slightly used X1 Carbon 34XX version (2013 model) recenetly. I have been using t430 for quite a long time now but now when I'm on X1 carbon I notice that the Left-key with the trackpoint is not registering properly..when I click on the area close to the scroll key, which is naturally where my finger presses, The key goes down to its seat but it misses registry and often creates problems when I drag items. I have to push it down with an extra force to make sure the key wont miss. The same key works very responsive when I click on the other end (left end) of the key. But near the scroll key it feels as if something underneath the key has shifted or something...I tried tapping it, hitting it, pulling it upwards and pressing it hard but none of that helped. I was wondering if anyone could provide me help on how to remove this key and clean whats underneath and fix it. I know how to remove the keyboard but not sure how to get to this key. Thank you

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi there, I've been using a T400 for around a year now. Previously, I could move the trackpoint and the touchpad at the same time (left hand on the trackpoint and right hand on the touchpad). I reformated, installed the drivers for both, and now if I am using the trackpoint and try to move the touchpad at the same time, there is about a 2 second delay before I get any movement from the touchpad. Any ideas? It is a really big annoyance because even if I am using the track point and stop moving it, and then immediately try and move the touchpad there is still a second where no movement happens, and I have to lift my finger and put it back down on the touchpad before the cursor moves. Thanks,-Ben

Answer:Using Touchpad and Trackpoint simultaneously.

I use the trackpoint and usually have both pad and trackpoint turned on.  Normally, i would have my palm resting on the pad while using the trackpoint.  If the pad reacted to my touch while i'm using the trackpoint, it would be quite annoying because the mouse would move unintentionally.  having approx 1-2 sec delay fixes the problem of unintentional movement.   So I thought it was supposed to work that way...

Heads up to potential buyers.  The X300 trackpoint and touchpad are not fully functional when used with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, MS Access, Remote Desktop, and other mainstream applications.  This is true for both XP and Windows OS.  The built-in pointing devices operate like a mouse without a wheel - you can point and click, but you cannot scroll.  This has been a known problem since June of 2008, and has been brought to the attention of this forum numerous times without resulting in any known action by Lenovo.WFaz

Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

I have a Lenovo T420s.  I bought it in May 2011 so it came with the Touchpad/Trackpoint driver version 15.2.14.0 (6hgx35ww.zip), which is the one also known for its massive memory leak. In any case, with that driver I am able to use the Trackpoint to navigate somewhere on the screen and immediately use the Touchpad if necessary. I do that a lot - I use the Trackpoint to quickly get somewhere on the screen, and then switch to the Touchpad for finer navigation (e.g. to look for something in Explorer, click on a link somewhere, etc). Every version since that verison has not worked the same.  I am now using 15.3.16.1 which doesn't have any memory leaks.  As soon as I touch the Trackpoint, the Touchpad becomes unresponsive to touch for about 1.5 seconds.  Try it.  Put your left pointer finger on the Trackpoint and move the mouse around.  Right as you lift your finger, use your right pointer finger on the Touchpad and see if it responds. It doesn't - you have to lift your finger and put it down again for it to register your touch.  Previously it would register your finger touch on the Touchpad right away. I'm almost tempted to switch back and deal with the memory leaks!  It makes such a difference with speed of navigation. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I checked the BIOS setting and it is at automatic for both touchpad and trackpoint. Sometimes even the touchpad does not work. I have to restart the laptop couple of times for something to work. I have tried disabling touchpad in BIOS and end up not having the trackpoint also not work.In the thinkvantage productivity center it says that ultranav is not installed and I downloaded the ultranav update from lenovo website and installed it. Still the trackpoint does not work.I love the trackpoint and I hope some one can help me figure out what is happening.thanks

Answer:T61 trackpoint and touchpad mouse

Same problem..also wish the T61 came with SOME directions for simple functions.  Hope someone replies. Also have trouble getting fonts on certain websites to be of a more readable size.

I've had this laptop since yesterday, and all was fine until I started using my Wacom graphics tablet... the tablet itself works perfectly but the Touchpad and Trackpoint seem to have switched off completely [the Touchpad buttons don't work either].Have I switched them off somehow, is it related to using the Wacom? Other similar questions online mention altering settings in Mouse > UltraNav, but this doesn't exist for me. Thinkpad Edge E530cWindows 7 ProEverything should be default settings because I haven't had it long enough to change anything!Makes no difference if on battery or plugged inNo error messages appeared. Any help much appreciated! KtP

Answer:How have I switched off Touchpad & Trackpoint?

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-67226install the above software. Also check in the Device Manager under Control Panel-> System. Make sure that you have the Ultranav trackpoint and trackpad detected, and there is no yellow exclamation mark.

I just got my new X1, but found immediately that the buttons associated with trackpoint doesn't work. Actually only the left and middle buttons don't work, the right button works, so I guess it's not likely to be a software problem. Anyone has similar problem as this?

Answer:X1 trackpoint button problem

nope, you should have warranty still, just call up support and they should be able to help you, i.e. either to send you a keyboard for self replacement or send you off to the depot.

Does anybody know of any third party programs to allow you to custom configure the Trackpoint right button?  I would love to change it from a right click to a "Browser Back" button to allow for easy web surfing.  Wouldn't it be awesome if you could hit that without moving your hands off the keyboard to go back one page in your web browser?

I don't know if I'm just being overly critical now or what, but I've started noticing more and more that my left TrackPoint button is loose - much looser than the right one.  I can feel it sort of rubbing against something when I press it (because it can move around) and it's just annoying.  The right button doesn't have that problem, but obviously I use the left one a lot more. Is this possible to fix myself if I open up the casing?  Has anyone else experienced this?

Answer:Loose TrackPoint button?

Bad keyboard perhaps? If I were you I'd ask lenovo for a keyboard replacement.

Issue 1: When I vertical scroll in a web page (Chrome & MSIE) by dragging TrackPoint (stick) while holding down left UltraNav button, the cursor moves but the web page fails to scroll, or demonstrates scroll latency of about .5 to 1 second behind the stick movement.  Sometimes, I have to try a couple times to get the scrolling to occur. Issue 2: Very often I must double click on UI buttons and web page links with the UltraNav button, when I should, traditionally, only have to click once. Received the T510 about 7 days ago.  i5, Win7 64bit, integrated graphics.  I've disabled all eye candy and set theme to classic.  Updated to latest available UltraNav and display driver.  I've tried just about every adjustment in the mouse and UltraNav settings, going as far as disabling the touchpad and touchpad filters. Synaptics driver info:Driver provider: SynapticsDriver date: 3/24/2011Driver version: 15.2.19.0Download from: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66898File: 6hgx37ww  This is truly annoying and I'm about to return this laptop.  I hate to resort to that.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I've used a T43 and T61 for the last 7 years at work and never had this issue.  I love T-model Thinkpads, but this is a poor experience.

Answer:T510: TrackPoint scrolling hesitates and left single click often ignored

1. Does vertical scroll work elsewhere? Like in Adobe Reader or a long Wordpad document?2. Same here; do clicks work elsewhere?I've only seen the delay when my CPU is being maxed out and SynTPEnh.exe doesn't intercept the middle-drag in time.

Hi, Anyone knows how to configure left and right button to work together to emulate middle button?, ie when pressing down both left and right button, it functions as middle button? Simon

Answer:Left and right button combo to emulate middle button?

Hello mate, Nop it's not possible, You can choose what each button do, but not both together. If you want you can enable Tapping zone for the touch pad and emulate the middle button tapping one corner of the touchpad.

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

Answer:New X1 Carbon, touchpad and trackpoint not working at all

Hi.

Just in case here it is a pointer to the Support site of the X1 Carbon.
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/x1-carbon-help

I guess you have the 5th Gen, can you validate that?

What about the driver listed on the support site of the 5th Gen ? It seems to have some Synaptics driver and even some firmware update for it. Have you tried installing those ?

If you don't have the 5th Gen please specify the model to find the correct support site.

Regards

So after reinstalling the driver, my T440s Trackpoint is working as advertised, but while it was acting all wonky...something happened. The driver malfunctioned in a good way so that I could tap the touchpad with my thumb to invoke a left-click while using the TrackPoint. Normall, the driver locks out the touchpad completely while the TrackPoint is in use, so that the touchpad only functions as buttons. But the vertical travel of the touchpad is deep and it takes extra effort to depress completely each time. What's worse, the touchpad remains locked out after I move the cursor with the TrackPoint and then stop to leave it over an icon, so that I actually have to move the cursor with the touchpad before it will accept a tap as a left- or right-click. Is there any way to force the driver to let me use taps instead of clicks to inoke left and right click while using the TrackPoint? Also, is there any way to defeat the touchpad lockout? In my opinion, the touchpad itself is excellent as far as Windows touchpads go. They've gotton double-tap for right-click perfectly, and two-finger scrolling is actually quite nice. But they've also overlooked an opportunity to make TrackPoint use even easier and more user-friendly than it was with physical buttons.

Hi, I have a computer where the both the touchpad and trackpoint just stopped working. I can see it in the device manager, and it says it is working, but I get no response. If I look in the mouse options, I can see that the touchpad stands as activated, but at the same time it is grayed out. I can't deactivate it. The trackpoint is completely deactivated and grayed out. I have tried to remove the device and see is Windows reinstall it properly.I have downloaded and installed the latest driver fro both Lenovos supportsite and Synaptics. All so I tried to go into safemode. All the above with no success. I can plug in an USB mouse, and it will work fine. I need some help on what I can try, so I can get this to work.

Answer:Touchpad and trackpoint not working on an E530

Hi, Mhystique

There is a BIOS update that was released about two weeks ago that may be able to help the issue. This update can be found here. If that does not work, then the issue is likely hardware and the TouchPad will probably need to be replaced.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,Adam

Hi,My x220 4290's touchpad, trackpoint, and touchpad buttons and trackpoint buttons refuse to work. I'm having to use a USB mouse for the time being. I've tried to update the synaptics driver to the latest one which unfortunately hasn't helped. At the moment the system runs Windows 10 (has been for the last few months) with the latest BIOS installed. The touchpad and trackpoint don't even show up in device manager where they used to show.I opened the system up to check if the ribbon cable for the touchpad and the keyboard were both seated correctly. Reseating didn't help. Does this spell the end to my x220? Is there any way to fix this? Many Thanks, Saajan

I just upgraded my X301 to windows 7 and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the touch-pad. So, when I comfortably use my keyboard and trackpoint, I am constantly selecting things. The XP control panel interface had both separate sensitivity controls and the ability to turn the touchpad completely off. This doesn't exist in the Win7 ctrl panel and I can only find one driver suite for windows 7 on Lenovo's site. Any ideas?

When I download the ultranav driver, and utility software, no problems for 32bit Windows 7 For what ever reason, in device manager, the harware does not show up. I am looking for som help!

I have a new T440s which came with Windows 8, and I upgraded to 8.1Nothing strange installed in it. Sometimes touchpad and/or trackpoint don't work at all after turning on, rebooting or recovering from a suspended state. It never fails while the system is running. When it happens, I reboot and it works fine. Already upgraded everything using System Update (BIOS, etc) and Windows Update. Sounds to me as a driver issue, not a hardware issue... but I am not 100% sure. What should I do? Should I reinstall any driver? How?

Answer:T440s touchpad and trackpoint issue

Uninstall the UltraNav driver from Device Manager or Programs and Features. Then run System Update; it should offer the UltraNav driver again.Alternatively, here's the manual download:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds034647

Answer:T520 - Touchpad and Trackpoint Inop

Hi chl,

Since you updated the drivers and it's still causing the problem you can also try uninstalling them and then downloading the latest versions again; this sometimes solves the issue.

Let me know if that helps!

Ed

Have T520, Windows 7 64bit.Latest versions of Ultranav drivers and utility. Both TrackPoint and TouchPad are enabled in BIOS, however, TrackPoint is always disabled, and it shows as such in the Ultranav utility. If I disable TouchPad in BIOS and only enable TrackPoint in BIOS, then TrackPoint works fine, and only that shows enabled. If I disable TrackPoint in BIOS and only enable TouchPad in BIOS, then TouchPad works fine, and only that shows enabled. If I enable both in BIOS, then only TouchPad works, and only that shows enabled in Ultranav utilities, with the checkmark to enable TrackPoint grayed out. Doing Fn+F8 shows all three combinations of options, however, selecting both TouchPad and TrackPoint here does not do anything, and option always remains with Enable TouchPad only.Is there a way to use both TrackPoint and TouchPad? Why is TrackPoint always disabled if both are enabled in the BIOS? Other Thinkpads I've used never had this issue... Thanks.

Answer:T520 cannot enable both TrackPoint and TouchPad

Sorry for the bump... but this forum is popular and post gets buried pretty quickly... Has anyone experienced this before and have any ideas? BIOS and all drivers are up to date... Thanks.

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

Answer:scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it won´t work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

Hello. I have brand new E431 with Windows 7 and I already encountered some trouble. Is there a way how to disable both touchpad and trackpoint? UltraNav driver does not allow to turn them off both and there is not any hotkey feature like Fn+F8 to control a touchpad on my notebook, or at least I did not find any yet.As you see, if aj disable touchpad, then I cannot manage trackpoint options and vice versa. However, disabled touchpad still reacts on press, so it can still cause errors when I type. Could you help me please? Or even better, is there a way to make a keyboard shortcut to such option?

Answer:E431 - How to disable both touchpad and trackpoint

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I doubt such a feature where you can disable both trackpoint and touchpad is not available. Try disabling touchpad in BIOS and see if it helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.
