I currently have it working in reverse however the options in the display settings are greyed out to enable me to make the viewsonic the main screen Any help would be much appreciated, I found quite a few posts about this but no solutions. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This isnt a complete solution but it helps... you can just drag your taskbar onto the external monitor screen.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Last year, I ordered and installed a Lenovo 19" Flat-Panel monitor (and driver) for my T-61p ThinkPad.  Recently, as a contractor working on an IBM project, I was provided with an R61 ThinkPad and HP 1740 monitor.  The monitor driver that came with the R61 allows me to extend my desktop displays across the R61 screen plus the monitor screen as one contiguous desktop spread across the 2 screens.  The driver that came with my Lenovo 19" monitor only gives me the option of duplicating my T61 desktop screen on my external monitor.  Can I extract/copy the driver from the R61 and install it on the T61?  Or download a free version of the "extended desktop" driver from Lenovo, IBM, or somewhere else?  I've searched the Lenovo site but found no references to driver downloads.

Hello, for whatever reason my T60-p is no longer activating the external monitor (used for beamer presentation).System information:   Machine type: 2007-8DG   Operating System: WIN XP Starting the presentation director and choosing "Same display on notebook and external" brings the message:"The following preset could not be applied:   resolution   color quality.Modify the settings and try again"Also other settings for the second monitor are not working. The Thinkpad-monitor 1400*1050 is fine.My system operates in German language, so the translation of options and messages may be not exact. What do you recommend? That you.

Answer:T60p external Monitor fails

I don't own this unit, nor do I use this software, but the first thing I would do is see if I can get the computer to display on an external monitor. If it does, then you can be pretty sure the problem is software, if it doesn't, they you may have a hardware or driver issue.  That's probably not much help, but hopefully someone that owns one will have more to offer.. ps. if there are more then one graphics adapters on these, please specify which you own.

Hi,  I'm trying to setup dual monitor for my lenovo T61P laptop. I want to use one external monitor which is connected to my Thinkpad docking station and the laptop lcd monitor. I'm using windows vista x64. Does any one else have it setup this way? When I connect the laptop to the docking station, only the external  monitor displays data. I've tried going into desktop settings to extend my desktop but only one monitor is present. Please help. I've spent an entire two days playing with BIOS settings, searching forums....

Answer:T61P - dual monitor with docking station (laptop lcd monitor) and one external monitor

This started working fine when I installed the video drivers below: Display (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M / Quadro FX 570M) driver for Windows Vista 64-bit - ThinkPadhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67939  It looks like I had installed the wrong video drivers (32-bit)  previously. Now fn+F7 works fine and I am able to extend my desktop to mulple monitors (dual-monitor).

Hey All,

I'm having issues setting this up. I have a laptop that I use as my main workstation using a 27" monitor as the main display, while the laptop display is off. The resolution is 2560x1440.
I have the resolution and scaling setup perfectly for the few programs I use the most.

My problem is when I want to use the Laptop unplugged from the 27" monitor (say...on the couch) the text and icons are tiny and tough to use just to browse email and the web.

Is there a way to have my Laptop screen have a different scaling or resolution when its away from my desk so it's easier to use.

And will I be able to plug it back in to the External Monitor with previous Large Monitor settings intact?

Thanks in advance,

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Answer:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this: *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".* When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color* When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)* When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)* I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next. I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.Re:http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3597258 Hope someone can help me here! Best regards, pmlovold

Answer:Cannot set external monitor as main window on T500

Vista has caused us grief on this score and we've never seen a good answer on why.The good news is the Thinkpad Presentation Director utility- just fire that up and step through the Wizard. It will let you configure your monitors however you like and save it as a profile. In most situations that configuration will hold when you redock, but worst case is you just select the profile from the PD icon in the taskbar (or set the checkbox to automatically apply it whenever the notebook is docked).I would emphasize though that we mostly DON'T have to do those latter options- the big win is the capability to set the Primary monitor which for whatever reason Microsoft has grayed out in the regular controls.Best,Kevin P.S. If you really don't want to see the four screen setup and you are not going to use Switchable graphics in the BIOS you can set Display to Discrete Graphics (only) rather than Switchable. You will still likely need PD to set the Primary/Main.P.P.S You should also be able to do this through the ATI Catalyst Control Center, though in some cases that makes you jump through more hoops than the PD Wizard.

Model: A200-1AE
OS: XP SP2

I wish to use the external display in Windows XP. It would be necessary that the external display was the main thing, and desktop expansions occurred on the laptop display. The driver, downloaded from your site do not allow to make it... Though in Windows Vista such possibility is.

How it is possible to solve my problem?

Answer:Satellite A200-1AE: How to set external monitor as main display on Win XP

Hi

As far as I know this is not possible. In my case this option is grayed out!!!

But maybe it?s possible on your notebook. In such case you should access the graphic card properties. Then go the last tab called ?Settings?.

There you should mark the display 2 and should enable the option called ?use this device as the primary monitor?.
But if this option is not available you will be not able to set this!!!!

Best regards

I can't get the external monitor (aka dual screen) to work on my T60 via the VGA port. My model is currently running Windows XP and has a ATI Radeon X1300 video card. I'm 6 months out of warantee (although this problem started while in warantee but I can't convince Lenovo of that). I've tried the following:- ensuring "extend my monitor onto this desktop" in windows display properties- disabling/enabling Presentation Director and trying all the schemes- setting all different combinations of modes for resolution/colour on both (LCD + VGA) monitor- trying two different monitors and cables (which did work with other computers)- Updating the video drivers (from the Lenovo website) and Presentation Director to the latest versions I then figured it might be a hardware fault, so I tried to see if the external monitor was activated on bootup. I made sure the "LCD + VGA" option on boot was selected in BIOS. Still no joy. Finally, I figured the actual VGA connector was broken so I bought a compatible mini docking station (port replicator) and attached the VGA cable to that and even that didn't work. What on earth could be wrong if it's not the software and not the VGA connector? The video card is working as its powering the LCD display? Is my only option to give it in to repair (I can't afford that)? --MichaelMessage Edited by mstrom on 07-03-2008 04:03 AM

Answer:external monitor simply not working - including with external dock (dual screen)

Hi,Does the external connections and cables work with another system. I'd do that first. If all of it works with another system then it could be drivers or internal things but try that first. There are some driver updates on the Lenovo site. Make sure your BIOS are updated and such.Good Luck,

My ViewSonic VP930b just died and I want to upgrade to a widescreen monitor. I was connected to the VP930b via DVI to my T60p in an advanced mini-dock. The VP930b's native resolution was 1280x1024...no problem there, as I would expect since it is a lower resolution than my T60p's 1400x1050 native resolution. What I'm unsure of is if my T60p can drive an external monitor with a higher resolution, specifically widescreen 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. Reading the tech specs page for my machine, I get the feeling that it might be compatible with 4:3 external monitors only and not 16:9 or 16:10 monitors. My graphics chip is a 256MB ATI Mobility FireGL V5250.Does anyone have a T60p connected to a widescreen monitor? Answering that question would be a big step in the right direction for me to feel confident purchasing a VP2250wb or Dell 2408WFP.Thanks in advance.

Answer:T60p (FireGL V5250, 1400x1050) + advanced mini dock + DVI = what max resolution on external monitor?

the maximum resolution supported over the dock's dual-link DVI-D port is 2560x1600 @ 32-bit.the maximum resolution supported over the internal VGA or the dock's VGA port is 2048x1536 @ 32-bit.any of the monitors you're considering will work.

- plug the monitor into my friend's laptop with windows 8 through that HDMI cable and it works fine, the same with other laptop running windows 7==> cable and monitor are normal
- plug my laptop to my neighbor's smart TV. There was ''connected' symbol which appears on the TV but black screen instead of image, Laptop couldn't detect the TV
- reinstalling nvidia and onboard-graphics drivers and update to the latest
- Made a clean install of windows, tried windows 8 also but the same result
- Updated my BIOS and EC

I know there are threads relating to this topic, but none offer all of the information I need.

I have a Lenovo Ideabook with a permanently trashed LCD screen (don't ask). Two issues I am unsure of how to address:

1) How do I attach an external monitor in the first place? (There is probably a basic port for this, but I am at work without the laptop and want to look into this ASAP.

2) Since when I reboot the laptop I will see nothing onscreen, what keystrokes do I need to execute in order to move my desktop display to the external monitor?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Cracked laptop screen--need help with external monitor

Your laptop should have a (usually) blue VGA port to the back or sides.

They look like this, http://www.tvone.com/images/1t-vga-cattx-rear.jpg

It should automatically show up on the monitor, no key strokes needed.

I have the new Acer Aspire laptop and a TV which I use as a monitor. They have worked together very happily some time now. But yesterday I had to do a forced shutdown when the start button would not work and the TV screen shrank in size and there were error messages. When I rebooted, the TV monitor stayed black and a computer screen came alive for about 10 seconds as it was rebooting, then went black. I disconnected the TV from the computer and started her up and the computer screen behaved itself.
Even if I set all of the display parameters to indicate only one screen (the computer screen), if the TV monitor is connected to the computer, I end up with two black screens.
I have tried many display duplicate and extension.
No new software installed.
There is one clue. I disconnect the TV monitor from the computer, boot up, choose duplicates to display. Then I connect the TV monitor to the computer. What happens, for about one second, is that both screens light up.
What is going on? Help please.

Answer:Both laptop screen and external monitor go black

If you are still getting the black screens when starting up there is a useful shortcut you can try. Press the windows key + P. This will give you some options to try different combinations of TV monitor and/or screen.

It sounds like you might need a graphics driver update or roll back to a previous one it is has recently changed.

Hi, I bought a HP 10 inch mini laptop(with XP) just a month ago. I have used the laptop with a 21 inch external monitor which is connected to the laptop via a VGA port. It has been OK for a month, but I don't know what I did to it, Today I just can not keep both my laptop screen and the external monitor screen on at the same time, when I connect the external monitor, the laptop screen turns off immediately, if I disconnect the external monitor, then the laptop screen came on. I need to keep both of them on at the same time, hope someone can help me. Thanks.

I have a MSI GS60 ghost pro gaming laptop which has Intel HD graphics 4600 and Nvidia GTX970M GPU, CPU i7 4720HQ, running Windows 10. I study abroad, several months ago i went back home and plugged-in my laptop to the TV via HDMI for gaming like normal. Yesterday i bought an ASUS VC239H external monitor and tried to do the same thing, but there is no HDMI input signal, the Laptop cannot detect the monitor (include display settings, intel HD graphics settings, nvidia settings). This is what i tried:

- Fn+f2, Fn+f8 keys, windows P switching to duplicate or extend or anykind of options
- Bought an adapter HDMI-Mini Displayport to use the mini displayport with HDMI cable

nothing works

Hey everyone,

I recently bought an external monitor for my laptop and I would like to use both of the screens in extended mode.

The problem is that my laptop's screen resolution is 1366x768 and the external monitor's resolution is 1440x900.
How do I change the resolution individually for each screen? I can change the external's resolution by using "second screen only" mode, but when in extended mode, I can only go with 1366x768. I tried searching on google, but with no luck.

Is there even a way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
My HP pavillion xh365 laptop has developed a problem with the screen going black. This happens after running for a few minutes to several hours. The screen goes completly black with no faint outlines showing. I have tried running the onboard diognostics, but get the same trouble. The only way to recover the screen is to reboot. I have the same problem whether the laptop is running on the built in display or is conneceted to an external display. Both screens go black at the same time. When the screen goes black, I can hear some changes in the pc. The sounds I normally hear are just the hardrive and the fans, but when the screen goes black, I hear some changes in the pitch of one of the sounds.

I have not recently made any changes to the system.

What do you suppose is causing the black screen?

Thanks to all, Jerry.

Answer:black screen on laptop & external monitor

Hardware could be failing; my advice is to use a program like SIW or if your BIOS supports it to check the temperature that your laptop is running at. The increase in noise could be related to the pc unable to vent properly. The excess heat would cause problems. Also, have you tried a system restore or rolling back your video driver? :major

Dear all,

I have a Dell Precision laptop (M4800) with 16 GB RAM and a big SSD.

I have been struggling for ages with this bleeping w10 and have got to a stage where it does actually run very well ... if the comp is using a docking port and external monitor (in this case a Dell U3011, 30-inch).

But when I run the laptop using the laptop screen (no port, no external monitor) it is laggy... it takes an appreciable time for Windows Explorer to come up when I got Win+E, and when it does I actually see the screen components being painted; various other hotkeys are slow too (seconds to display the window).

I assumed this might have something to do with the resolution settings... but nothing changes it.

My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro K2100M...

Any ideas?

Answer:lag when using laptop screen / good perf when using external monitor

Hi, and welcome to tenforums!

Do you have any other peripherals attached to docking port? USB drives or network connection?

I would check two things at first: remove any links to files or folders in Quick Access in Explorer window, that can be removed or dead, secondly check shell extensions.
You can try shell extension viewer and remove them one by one. There are some threads on this forum already. Nvidia shell extension is known to cause some problems.

hi, i have jut installed windows 7 ultimate n 32bit, the problem i have is that i cant get my laptop to display on an external monitor - i need to do this as the screen on my laptop is damaged beyond repair - the startup process does, but after i get 'no signal'

now, when i re-installed xp a week ago, i had the same problem but managed to solve it by pressing F8 and choosing enable vga mode before xp loaded.
i tried to do the same with wndows 7 by choosing the low resolution option, however this doesnt work, i get the initial 'windows is starting' screen then 'no signal'

ive also tried pressing Fn + F5 once windows has loaded.

the laptop is an acer travelmate 4233, any help will be appreciated

Kinda begs the question on why you would want to upgrade a broken laptop...does the screen stay black? Does the welcome music play? Asking because Windows might be hanging up during boot....

Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7052OAS Windows 7awhile back laptop screen went black. i just dont have the money to bring it to local Comp tech. So i have been searching for a few days in the forums. I can see the log in screen just barely not enought to do anything (such as Back up my comuter as the owner manual recommends)So i hooked up and external monitor through the RGB (monitor port) that was good for a bit. now laptop is the same (without the option to use fn F# keys) BUT the monitor is in Power save mode and i am at a lose for what to do? not being able to manuver the mouse. Ive tried many many times to... take out battery, un plug AC, hold power down for 30 secs, Fn f2, try from there to boot in safe mode. I have a hp dv6000 laptop, it dosn't move much and doesn't have much wear and tear but the screen seems to have gone dead. It remains lit black, but doesn't display anything except for a few seconds during the windows loading screen or just before the desktop loads, where it displays normally, though it flickers very slightly, then goes right back to lit black.

I don't move it around so i figured i could just turn it into my desktop, but when i plug in a lcd moniter, and it works fine during the boot sequence, into the windows loading screen then gives me a no signal message on the moniter then turns to black. Unplugging and replugging the monitor doesn't return any image.

Booting in safe mode does not remedy this problem BUT booting in VGA mode does. When i boot in vga mode it loads up at low resolution just fine, though if i go into the display settings and change any setting that would cause the video to reset ie switch resolution then click apply, monitor turns black just like during regular bootup. This includes when i try to disable the default monitor. Note that during this vga process the regular laptop screen still does not display, only the external monitor.

The laptop continues to run properly despite no image, as i can shut it down and restart it through keyboard commands.

Please note before responding that the bios for this laptop contains no options for default video device, the only video options are for changing the memory ... Read more

Hello, I have a T520 with a docking station.  There is an external monitor connected to the VGA port in the docking station and I have the laptop set to only use the external monitor.  However, when I close the screen of the laptop and put the laptop to sleep, and then when I open the laptop again, the laptop monitor turns on and mirrors on the external.  So basically, I need to set it to only use the external every time the laptop starts up.   Is there any fix to keep the laptop screen off while it is docked? Thanks.

Answer:T520 External Monitor/Laptop Screen issue

I don't have a dock to test. But I would look at the setting for Action when closing the lid/cover. Hibernate, go to sleep would be the normal actioins. You'd want nothing to happen. Look into the choice and I believe that will resolve it. There may be a group for when DOCKED as notebooks had years ago. The settings would apply only to when Dockend and not undocked.

be sure the monitor settings for your graphics are not set to an external monitor. go to control panel, clicking Display Settings to check this out and toggle between screen 1 and 2. click the icon that corresponds to the monitor that you want to designate as the primary display, and then select the 'This is my main monitor' check box.

if not, the use of the external monitor which works ok confirms the issue.

its not the video chip or motherboard. could be the lcd screen itself or if it is the inverter. most of the times it is the inverter that is the problem and can be fixed, you just have to get the correct inverter that supplies the right amount of voltage and you will be back in business.

sometimes its the backlight (light bulb) that went, which is more difficult imo and more time consuming. shine a flashlight on the lcd , if you see a faint image then in most cases it is the backlight that needs to be replaced. If you don't see an image even when shining the flashlight then it is most likely the inverter. if that helps.

if deciding to look at repairs for the inverter, enter ... Read more

Answer:How to auto turn off laptop screen while using external monitor ?

i don't know if it's possible but you could try going into display settings and set external one as it's main display if possible and then disable laptop one with Fn + F2 but idk if it will remain off if you power laptop of and then on again :/ Update: found how to do this, right click on desktop area and select screen resolution while having external display connected then from there you will find a drop down box 3rd one or 4th one can't remember but inside it you will find stuff like display desktop on screen 1 or 2 so find which screen number your external screen is and apply it to that screen then laptop screen should become black like it's switched off and you will see desktop area is on external display so i hope this solves your request. P.s don't forget to hit kudos button if this helped

I have a Thinkpad T61 with a damaged backlight running windows XP SP3. Instead of investing in a new backlight or LCD display, I'm using it with just an external monitor. Only the external monitor is enabled by default, and the T61 boots to the external monitor. In general, it works fine, but frequently it attempts to re-enable the laptop LCD display, mostly whenever there is flash animation within the Google Chrome browser. When it does this, the external monitor blanks, the local LCD comes on momentarily, then the display returns to the external monitor. I've gone into the Device Monitor and disabled the local Monitor, but to no avail. I checked the BIOS, but I didn't see a way to disable the local LCD. So my question is: What must I do to avoid flicker/blanking of the external display whenever the T61 attempts to re-enable the local LCD?

Answer:T61 using ONLY external monitor - keeps trying to re-enable the local laptop LCD screen

in the bios menu there is an option to boot on external screen on DVI, VGA, etc, choose the port that the external screen is connected to and see whether that helps.

Hello my friends:
I have a serious issue that I hope someone can help me with.

While in the middle of checking my e mail remotely in Microsoft Outlook Web access, and attempting to exit to an external link in a message, Mozilla Firefox stopped responding, would not close, and I experienced a lock up that would not rectify. Even upon attempting a reboot, the laptop obviously remained on the cause of the issue and did not even give me the password prompt, and the same thing occurred after several stints of removing the battery for short periods and then attempting to reboot.

Here is the real kicker, though. Due to a cracked screen on the laptop, I have been using an external monitor in conjunction with the laptop. As a result, I cannot see anything that is actually going on. Previously, when all was perfect, the system would immediately progress to the password prompt screen in order to proceed working through the initialization of Vista. Now, everything remains dark, although it appears that I can still see the laptop stuck on a website at the very corner of the cracked screen, in addition to the computer still appearing to be in the constant state of processing info.

What I need, if someone is kind enough to assist, is a walkthrough on a system restore and diagnostic process utilizing the keyboard only in order to get me to a point where I can see something displaying on my external monitor that will allow me to see what is going and try to fix the problem, as I am in... I'm trying to use an older flat screen monitor as an extended monitor on my Yoga 900 series laptop.  I have a VGA to USB connector.  The reason I"m trying to do this is that I cannot use Windows 10 terminal server to remote to my clients server because the resolution is so high everything is tiny.  (I have played with the resolution on my laptop; also the scaling, but when I finally get to a full screen resolution I can see, the cursor disappears in the apps I'm using). I can get the external monitor to work in extended mode just fine and the result on the old monitor is exactly what I want.  But when I'm in remote desktop, running Microsoft Access, the screen flickers and after just a few mminutes, blacks out.  I can revive it, but this is not a workable solution. I have a couple of other flat screens monitors I could try - but they are also older.  I'm willing to try them, but don't want to spend the time if someone else has a better idea. Do I need a more up to date monitor or should I suspect the converter cable.....OR is there another solution out there for my 'older' eyes?

Answer:using older Sony flat screen monitor as external monitor on Yoga 900

This is the second go round - I realized that my previous description of the problem was inadequate.I have an Acer TravelMate 2410 laptop with a cracked screen - the left third of the screen is useable, but the rest is not. I've been using a ViewSonic VE150 as an external monitor for the last year with no problems. Now, when I boot the system, I get the error message "Out of Range 23Hz/18KHz". This is after I get the Acer splash screen and the Windows XP boot up splash screen during startup. The VE150 drivers are correctly installed. On the settings box, I can apply the check box to extend the desktop to the external monitor successfully, but when I check the "Use this device as the primary monitor" box, the Viewsonic goes black.Video card in the laptop is Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset, 128 Mb, Intel Video BIOS.The Acer email tech said ?For this error message try booting to Safe Mode and make sure the display resolution is set for 1280x1024 and set the refresh rate to 75Hz.? I tried this, but it didn?t work. While in Safe Mode, the external monitor came up as it should. Several others have made different suggestions about resolution and refresh rate, but nothing has worked. I've been into the device manager and the only strange issue is that there are duplicate entries for the video card, the laptop monitor, and the external monitor. I have yet to try and change any registry settings.Any ideas???__________________

Hi, this may be a bit tought to answer but I currently have a Sager 5620 laptop for about 2 years now and around 2 monthes ago the LCD on the laptop decided to die thus it only displays a "White Blank Screen" at all times when it is on. The rest of the laptop works fine so I decided to use my Hyundai L70S LCD monitor as the external monitor. My problem is that whenever the laptop boots up it goes straight to the Laptop's LCD and attempts to switch to the external monitor but the monitor displays "Video Mode Not Supported" but once it goes to Windows XP Log On screen it works fine. The reason I need to get to the boot-up screen is because I need to access the BIOS but since I can not see the actually BIOS I seem to have a problem. I have tried a CRT monitor but it displays some frequency error but works fine once it reaches the Windows XP Log On screen.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi, I've looked on this forum for the solution for this problem and couldnt find one.

My laptop has 1280x800 resolution and when I connect it to my external monitor (samsung 22" TFT) and I change to a higher resolution, its fine for that session. But when I reboot my laptop, the screen that appears on the samsung TFT is completely different resolution to the high-res one I chose prior to shutting down.

So everytime I reboot, I have to reset the resolution to the high one and the settings never get stored! Its very annoying because it wastes time and also the desktop icons get messed up on each bootup.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make the settings stay in memory so I dont have to switch back to high-res at each startup??

Thanks!

For some reason, the info on my external monitor is slowly stretching horizontally... now it's almost to the point that I can't even see my Start button on the left, or the system clock on the right! Answer:Laptop w/ external monitor problem

Right click a blank space on the desktop and select properties. Click on the last tab: settings. Make sure the screen area is set for something like 1024 x 768 and not a setting that a wide screen monitor would use. If the setting is 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024, see if you can borrow another monitor to test. It might be that the external monitor needs a vertical adjustment.

For some reason once I go and use the intel display options and set up the extended desktop everything appears to be fine. However when the Windows Vista security screen pops up asking for you permission for a specified action it gets rid of my extended desktop and just kicks everything back to only my laptops display. This also happens when restarting the computer and doing "Ctrl + alt + delete" to open the task manager. It is extremely frustrating and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

I am not sure if it is just a problem with vista or if I need a new driver since updating from xp, even though my computer says it is the latest driver for the monitor.

Thanks

Answer:Problem using an external Monitor with Laptop

What security screen?
Have you got adaware or any other program installed that may protect the registy?
Try disabling UAC to see if this helps.

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Dell Laptop external monitor = OK, attached monitor = BSOD

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

Answer:Desktop Icons Rearranged To Laptop Monitor From External Monitor

If you booted up without the external connected, it likely switched the laptop screen to now be the main screen. Just go back in and double check which one is set to main.
I run dual screens on my laptop but leave the laptop screen as main. My external is a smaller screen than my laptops 17 inch screen. It's a portable 15 inch USB screen.
I on occasion boot up my laptop without the external connected. Having the laptop screen as the main screen helps in this situation.
I don't put any ICONS on my desktop, its just my personal preference. I launch my every day Apps/programs from my taskbar.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Hi all,
I connected an external screen for testing a presentation (just a second monitor), and ticked presenter view, clicked extend desktop and then it correctly identified the monitors., but the resolution on the external was low. So I turned it up, and fiddled around a little, then suddenly my laptop screen went blank (probably after I clicked yes to something) amd only the external monitor now shows anything. In display settings it now suddenly has two of my external monitors, and not my laptop one listed...

Identifying them shows nothing on my laptop, and the screen being "1"

I really need it back to my laptop screen, as it's hard to do stuff when the laptop is 1m away from the screen! I'm writing this post like it...

So please help!

Edit: Oh and by the way, unplugging the screen gives No Signal, and nothing to the laptop

Edit 2: Somehow I made both monitors appear in the list again, but still only the external will display anything. If I choose my laptop screen and click extend to this, it asks me to keep changes, I say yes, then it greys out again
Thanks,
Nappymonster

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 running Win 7 Professional (64-bit). I have it connected to an external monitor. Whether I choose "projector" or the option to show on both screens, the monitor on the laptop will flicker. Here's more specific information that may be helpful:

The laptop and a desktop are both connected to a KVM switch. I set the laptop to "projector" mode so that it will, of course, project on to the main monitor. When I am accessing the laptop via the KVM switch, I see its display on the main monitor just fine. However, if I switch to the desktop, the laptop screen will intermittently come on and off. This happens over and over. That is what I describe as the "flickering." It's very annoying as I work from home and each time the laptop screen goes off and on, I hear a beep in my headset.

The laptop uses Intel HD graphics. The driver date is 01/30/2013 and version is 8.15.10.2993. The laptop resolution is set to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60. Windows does not find a newer version of the graphics driver when doing a search. The laptop will also give this message when flickering:

Optimal Resolution Notification
This is not the optimal display resolution for the primary display device. The optimal resolution is 1280 x 800. Click this notification for more information.

Keep in mind this ONLY happens when the laptop is NOT being accessed on the main monitor on the KVM switch. If it is, its screen does NOT flicker.... Read more

I have a T410 running Windows 7 SP1, with an NVIDIA NVS 3100M display adapter. When I have my laptop connected to an external monitor (using both monitors) the laptop screen flickers. I have observed it when connected to two different monitors, one plugged directly into the VGA port on the laptop, the other being the monitor connected to my docking station when I have the laptop docked. It seems to only happen when I move the mouse, if I just let it sit it doesn't seem to happen. The external monitors do not flicker, only the laptop screen. The laptop screen does not flicker at all when the laptop is not connected to an external monitor. Any ideas?

I've got a Toshiba l305d.

The other day my laptop was sitting on a desk playing music when the screen went gray with black bars going across it vertically. I'd never seen anything like this, and it was completely frozen, so I manually powered it off and restarted. Then the screen wouldn't come on.

I've managed to get it to display through an external screen, and to my surprise the screen on my actual laptop would come back on after I'd get to the Windows Vista login screen. I unhooked the monitor cable, tested Windows a little bit (everything seemed to be working okay), and then restarted. It restarted just fine. So I tried shutting down, but it the screen wont power on if it's turned off. If I hook it to the external monitor again, i can get back to Windows. I'm just trying to figure out why it won't power the screen on its own.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech

My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.

Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

I am moving from a desktop to a laptop w/ docking station. I want to be able to drop the T61 into the dock and go dual-screen with the lappy screen (usually holding outlook open) and say a 19" LCD. Is this possible? Would the Intel X1300 support a 19" LCD res? I am most likely going with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, but just in case I changed my mind.. I would like to know.

Answer:Can the T61 w/ Adv. Mini Dock do dual-screen laptop screen + external monitor?

Yes - all the T61s here using the Advanced Mini-Dock (including mine) and they all support dual-screen.We use 24" Monitors with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 32 Bit and it looks teriffic. If you dock and undock a lot I'd recommend using the ThinkVantage Presentation Director to set up your screens.I think the nVidia is worth it.

Hi, i do have the T400 with switchable graphics and use an external monitor. Despite 4GB installed, it is shown that only 2.46GB are usable. So I used the thinkvantage and switched my graphics accelerator to "High Power" (so to the ATI accelerator instead of the Intel), but it is still 2.46gb. Then I disabled the INTEL chipset and rebooted: what happened is that I still had 2.46gb, and now I could not use my external monitor anymore. Is the external monitor not usable without the INTEL chipset enabled? Is there  a way to get 3Gb or 4gb RAM working under this constellation? (Windows 7 32-bit) thanks

Answer:T400 - external monitor - 2.46gb usable Ram (Windows 7 32bit)

Do you have either 1 stick x 4GB or 2 sticks x 2GB?If you have a 1 x 4GB configuration, try running diagnostics in the BIOS. Even if it checks out, you might have a bad stick anyways. If you have a 2 x 2GB configuration, try taking one stick out and then starting the computer- if it shows 2GB installed, try the other one. If one of the sticks shows under rated capacity, that's the one that's probably defective. Run diagnostics and replace as needed. The chipset used shouldn't have any effect on how much RAM you have.

I have Windows XP - Dell Latitude D505

Okay so I was given a laptop with a cracked screen. My friend kindly took the screen off since it was useless. I had the laptop hooked up to an external monitor and it worked great just like a mini desktop!

However I just recently moved, and I think my computer got damaged. It no longer accepts the external monitor. I have tried two monitors that work perfectly fine so I know its not a monitor issue. Since I can no longer view anything at all by a VGA cable.. is there any other cable/monitor I can try? Any way I can press a sequence of buttons to make it work? Or do I have to take it in somewhere if I want any help whatsoever?

thanks!

Answer:Solved: Laptop/External Monitor Problem

if you think it got damaged, it probably got damaged.

no keystrokes that i'm aware of.

it was given to you with a cracked screen, damage occured, it might be time to invest what would have been a repair in something else.

Hi I have lenovo ideapad y y500 with 650m sli, which originally had windows 8 but then I updated to windows 8.1 and used the fix for GPU bios provided by this forum. The issue is that both my external and laptop monitors go black when I connect external monitor to my laptop with vga cable.I have had this issue since I updated nvidia driver back in the middle of january. (befor the update it worked fine I had no issues). I only used external monitor occasionally so I decided to wait for nvidia to fix the problem (rolling back to previous nvidia driver version did not help). Well now after 3 new version the problem persists. I tried using  the hot key on my keyboard to change between 4 different monitor-laptop setups (only laptop, only monitor, resize..) and it did not help.  I tried recording my laptop screen when I pluged in the external monitor and the video is normal (it isn't black). I then opend nvidia control panel to see if it recognises external monitor and recorded the screen. My external monitor (samsung) was recognised.Click for video on youtubeIn between black flashes i pluged in/out the external monitor.Translation for "zaslon na prenosniku" : laptop's screen. So any idea how to resolve this problem ? Thanks in advance.

Hey,

I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

The touchscreen on the laptop is completely black.  The computer is turning on and the backlight to the keyboard is functioning, as well as the fan.  At times I can get a series of 8 beeps that can be heard.  I referenced this and understand that code indicates LCD failure.  I connected the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI cable and it is black as well.  I did remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstalled it.  I also check the LCD cable connection, unplugged it, and plugged it back in.  No change.  What could be causing this problem?
Thank you for any help!

The above laptop belongs to a friend of mine. Please can you advise if the screen is faulty or possibly backlight?

The laptop is standard spec with xp home installed.

Answer:Satellite A100-521 - Screen blank but laptop working via external monitor

Its hard to determine the fault without looking at it in person.

If you see the backlight come on, but there is no image, then the LCD or LCD Cable or Graphics Board may be faulty.

If you dont see the backlight come on, but you can see a very faint/dark image on the screen, then it may just be a faulty Inverter.

I would send it to an ASP for a quote. There is a list of ASP's (service centers) on the Toshiba website in the support section.

Hi

I am puzzling! I am really not a computery person - but dropped my Acer laptp on the floor, and broke the screen - so bought a dell monitor, plugged it in, and it works - but only in SAFE mode. I have tried the Fn F5 or F6 keys, and that doesnt work. When I do that it just freezes to the screensave on my laptop (a lovely picture of my cat!!) however wont let me use any keys or anything.

I dont know much about drivers or anything... I am just completely baffled, and really have no idea what to do now! When I went to windows help, it talked about setting the external monitor, but it couldnt detect a second monitor (even though I am clearly using it RIGHT now in safe mode!!)

Please can someone help me - in simple terms?

Thanks

Mazz

Answer:Broken laptop screen - only detects external monitor safe mode!?

Hi Mazz,

The 'external display' does not seem to be supporting the 'graphic drivers'. Please follow these steps:
- Boot to 'Windows' in 'Safe Mode'
- Access 'Device Manager' and expand the category 'Display Adapters' > Right click and uninstall the 'Video Drivers' > Follow through with the uninstall process > Restart the unit
- Click Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook, Ultrabook / Aspire / Aspire 5332 to 'Download and Install' the appropriate 'Display driver' for your unit
Note: Please filter search results by selecting the 'Operating System' installed in the unit. You may also want to check the system configuration in detail; it comes with an optional 'AMD' graphics adapter. Uninstall and Re-install the driver that is applicable to your system.

Hope this helps.

I recently replaced my old XP desktop computer with an HP laptop running Vista. When I'm using the laptop at home, I hook it up to the 19" flat panel monitor that came with my old desktop. It's a Samsung SyncMaster 193v. When doing this, I have the laptop's screen switched off.In general this works fine, but there are one or two small annoyances in the monitor display that I can't seem to get rid of.* Some small graphic objects (icons, emoticons, etc.) appear to have a vertical line of pixels missing from one edge. * When I do an address search on Google Maps, the shadow of the label pointing to the address shows as chunks of black, whereas I know it should be just pale grey.* In general, I feel that the display is a slightly less "crisp" than it was on the old computer. There are one or two other small anomalies that, although not serious, make me think that there is some kind of small problem between the monitor and the laptop's GeForce G 105M video card.I have updated the monitor's drivers, but as the computer is only a month old I haven't done this for the video card.Do you think these little annoyances can be rectified?
