Thinkpad z60m: HDD password [But have Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk & Product Recovery Disks]

Question: Thinkpad z60m: HDD password [But have Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk & Product Recovery Disks]

Hello, I've lost access to my Thinkpad because of lost password to Hard disk. Then purchased another HDD and installed OS and drivers. Getting few problems, one is that I cannot use ThinkVantage key to restore my system. But I have Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk & Product Recovery Disks, so can I recover my old HDD?If not possible to use the old, can I get back my system working[as factory default] with those disks? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am doing a fresh install in the following rather than cloning because the system has not been reinstalled for 4yrs.  From an external usb CD drive (internal drive removed) I installed the recovery disks onto a 160GB Samsung HM160HC PATA drive with no problem .  Then clicked the restart button.  My T42 booted right back into the opening page of the Rescue and Recovery routine.  On restarting again I used F12 to get the list of drives and selected the Samsung HDD.  This did not help.  Have repeated startup numerous times.  The computer could not be looking at any other drive because the Samsung is the only one connected.  I am tempted to download Lenovo's available BIOS update while logged-in with the old 30GB drive regardless of the fact that my  Embedded Controller Program is ver 3.04 and supposed to be suitable for the 160GB drive upgrade.  If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

Answer:T42 HDD upgrade- Recovery disks install but hard drive only boots to Rescue and Recovery routine.

Welcome to the forum!

Wipe the hard drive clean.

Boot from the first (Rescue & Recovery CD) and follow the prompts. You'll have 7 more CDs to go through (5 for the earlier version).

Once the process is complete, the machine will instruct you to remove the final CD and reboot. At that point, you should be able to boot from the hard drive with no interaction required.

Good luck.

I installed Ubuntu GNU/Linux in my 3000 N100 0768GZQ laptop and deleted the partition in which i had installed Vista using fdisk. However, fdisk also deleted the Lenovo rescue and recovery partition. Not realizing this i created 2 new partitions in the free space. Now I want to install Vista in one of these partitions and I don't have a Lenovo Rescue and Recovery drive or the recovery CDs. Please help me.

Answer:Lost Lenovo Rescue and recovery partition in 3000 N100 0768GZQ have no recovery disks, please help

You can either get a hold of Vista installation disks and install it manually, or call Lenovo support and ask for recovery disks. They may charge you for the disks as you are supposed to create your own recovery disks.

I have gone to restore my laptop to Factory setting but in the rescue and recovery application i do not have any option to recover to the laptop as it came out the factory. When i got the laptop i created rescue media and have a set of 4 disks, All DVD(2 are 8.5GB). The R&R  boots and asks for the Final C disk. None of the disks display in the backup listbox. Before i went for a fresh install using a Windows 7 disk, i got R&R to off load media to a portable drive. This will boot to a different version of R&R similar to the post 2008 walkthrough. But the screen i get does not have the radio button for Factory restore, just the backup and when i put my DVD's in, no backup is found from the media i have... I removed the factory partition after i created the media as i presumed i could get back to the factory using them. My fresh install of windows 7 works but downloading the wireless driver from Lenovo doesn't activate... wish i never started to mess with it now.... Any suggestions???

Update: All Restored and Working again... Must label the Disks better in the future... I had 4 disks in a bundle, the first being the Rescue repair disk, which boots to a similar screen. As 1 of my disks didn't do anything in the various rescue and recovery application i used from previous thinkpads. Turned out this was bootable and the proper rescue and recovery for my set of disks... cdrivebackup.swm took ages to load and then asked for the second disk. Hi, I own a T60 laptop with Windows XP professional.I bought the Product Recovery CDs separately, around 1 year ago.Now my HDD has completely died, I cannot restore the orginal configuration. So, I got a new HDD, and tried using the product recovery CDs, but realized that I do not have a bootable CD which can ask me to load these product recovery CDs. It seems that Lenovo forgot to ship me this bootable disc - which I have found in forums is called - "Rescue and Recovery CD". How can I get these rescue and recovery CD? Has anybody gone through this?Do I need to buy these CDs again?   I got the following product recovery cds:Main FRU P/N: 43T8618XP-P SP2 Disc 1 of 6: CD P/N 43T8619Disc 2 of 6: CD P/N 43T8620Disc 3 of 6: CD P/N 43T8621Disc 4 of 6: CD P/N 43T8622Disc 5 of 6: CD P/N 43T8623Disc 6 of 6: CD P/N 43T7840  Please help.Peter.

It sounds to me like your rescue and recovery partition may be corrupted. My recommendations is to get the rescue and recovery CD's from Lenovo. I had to purchase some for an old T40 and it cost me like $45, but after you have them you can have piece of mind that you can replace the hard drive and still restore back to Factory settings. After you get the recovery CD's I would recommend reinstalling rescue and recovery.

I'll be upgrading my T520 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (clean install) and want to create a full, restorable backup of my system first. I'm confused about just which method to go with.  In Control panel, there is a "Lenovo-Factory recovery disks".  And then there is also Rescue & Recovery, which I just installed.  From the online instructions, it looks like with R&R, I can select either the OS and/or Data.  If I select OS, is this the same as running the Control panel item, Factory recovery disks?? I will probably create the OS backup media separate from the Data media anyway, since I want to copy the data over to my clean install of Windows 8. Thanks!

Answer:Use "Factory recovery disks" or "Rescue & recovery"?

The Recovery Disks are a must have do burn them to DVD's (3 - DVD are burnt). These 3 DVD allow you to reinstall the the Windows 7, tools drivers etc to the state it came from the factory. It becomes clean start as you originally got it. They maybe also used to boot into for the repair console but I am not certain as I haven't tried it myself. Now having said that which should be clear. You want an IMAGE of the DRIVE which includes 3 partitions. One is no good since Lenovo boots via Rapidstart via "System_Drv" partition. If you look in Disk Management you'll see that is the active boot partition. You need it and the Windows partitions a minimum. But that leave the Q drive omitted. Few people take into account that even though they have a backup of the HD they DON'T have the means to read it to put it back. Its fine if you just going to over write a working system from the backup but not it the application or tools are missing. Acronis Trueimage is OS independent and allow for a Boot CD to be made for those situation in which you can restore a HD, a partition or even folder and files from the same backup. This is what you'd want or something equivalent and 100% that you'll have access to it afterwards. I doubt you'd be able to easily do all this will R&R  and there is no way to verify that in advance. Many time the backup is no good and you're SOL. Trueimage can verify the image file created that its good if you which so you know. You can create as many imag... Read more

I accidentally modified my MBR with a Ubuntu Karmic Koala install.  It changed the MBR and now the R&R partition will not restore to factory defaults.  Thinkpad told me the only solution is to run the recovery disks. I did not make these, and now I am suffering.  Please, someone with their thinkpad winXP image on their z60m can you help?  It is possible to make recovery CDs inside the thinkpad tools on windows xp.  Could someone please make them and ship them to me?  (If you have some, can you loan them to me?)  I can pay you for your time and effort.  I have paypal and can pay for shipping, discs, time, etc... I have set a power on and hard disk password to prevent any unauthorized user to boot the computer and thats works fine but the problem is that it can be bypassed very easily by pressing the THINKVANTAGE blue button and going through the initial screen of the rescovery process. When you reach the main screen of the recovery process just press on "restart system" and on the next boot up you won't be asked for a password and it will boot into Windows. Is there any way to prevent a user to initiate a rescue and recovery to bypass the password or even better a patch that will trigger the password screen as soon as the blue THINKVANTAGE button is pressed ?

Hi everyone, I've just recently became a new owner of a T61, and really enjoying it. I haven't had a chance yet to test-drive the lenovo phone support, as I have not yet screwed anything up that bad that required their help. I did try a clean factory reinstall from the service partition and it worked great. I would like to find out, how does one use the rescue and recovery startup disc, and the product recovery discs that I created myself? From my previous experience with Dell and HP, I only had to insert the first one and restart the computer, and the rest followed. But with ThinkPads, if I ever wanted to bring it to a clean factory state using those discs, do I use rescue and recovery first, followed by the product recovery? I'm curious, what is the difference between the two?

The disks you created will allow you to recover your operating sys. without the rescue and recovery portion of your harddrive. It is especially usefull if your harddrive dies and you need to load onto a new drive.

I just ugraded from RnR 3.0 to 4.21. I did have problems uninstalling 3.0 prior to installing 4.21. I was forced to use Your Installer! 2008 to remove 3.0. My problem is that after installing RnR 4.21, I cannot get it to back up the HD without causing a blue screen error. It will actually get to the end of copying the HD image to my Seagate USB storage device, then have to shut down and restart due to an error detected by windows. Please help. Hi there people. First post so sorry if it's in the wrong place or anything. I've had as much of a search as I can and haven't found anyone with quite the same situation as me. The questions come at the end of the rambling background to my problem!!! Hope you can make it through to the end! My E520 recently just went beyond it's warranty and surprise surprise fairly soon after that I got a warning through ThinkVantage that there was a problem with my internal hard drive. When I googled the problem it said that the hard drive was going to fail and to replace it immediately.  As I (like an idiot) hadn't got round to backing up my computer properly (I'd saved all music, photos and videos to a seperate hard drive but hadn't done a Rescue and Recovery or Windows back up) I went out and bought a seperate hard drive to back up the computer and some disks to create the recovery boot disks.  When I went to the Q drive to do this I misunderstood the question about do I want to create a data back up disk. I thought this meant all my media so I said no and created just the boot recovery disks.  So my question (told you I'd get there) is this. When I replace the internal hard drive and use the boot disks to install windows will I then be able to use the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore my computer to it's former glory? Or will the fact that I'm not restoring the Lenovo skin (sorry if my terminology is wrong here. Not sure what to call it) ... Read more

Hello, I never created recovery disks when I purchased my T60 over three years ago.  I regret that. Now I am wondering if it is possible to do so.  When I launch Create Recover Media (rrmedia.exe), it crashes immediately:AppName: rrmedia.exeAppVer: 1.0.0.1ModName: unknownModVer: 0.0.0.0Offset: 0018089aEventID: 1000 I cannot request recovery disks from Lenovo, because my system is out of warranty now. So I think it is either it is impossible to use rrmedia.exe at this point (since in the meantime, I've upgraded to XP SP3, etc) or I need to upgrade or reinstall Rescue and Recovery.  However, trying the latter opens up a can of worms: 1) Rescue and Recovery shows version 3.01.0037.  Running system update to patch to 3.01.0042 fails: "A later version of 'Rescue and Recovery - Client Security Solution' is already installed on this machine.  The setup cannot continue." 2) When I try to uninstall RR from Add/Remove programs, it fails: "Another version of this product is already installed.  Installation of this version cannot continue.  To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel" 3) When I try to upgrade to the latest 4.xx, it says I must first uninstall the current version, which from the above, I cannot do. So the machine is confused as to which version it has, and it won't let me upgrade, uninstall, or reinstall. In summary:&... After I did a clean install of Win10 about a year ago, I created a USB Recovery Drive. I also have a Norton Security Recovery Drive and I?ve created USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi. I also use Acronis to create regular full disk images and I have a USB Bootable Acronis Rescue Drive.

With the USB Recovery Drive and the USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi, do I still need to keep the Recovery Partition that Win10 created when I did the original install? Are the files in that partition used by the system to create the USB Recovery Drive?

Also out of curiosity I executed the ?reagentc/info? command and I see that the Windows RE status is disabled. Did creating the USB Recovery Drive do that or is something else going on? If I keep the recovery partition then do I need to re-enable it and if so how do I do that?

Answer:Recovery Drive vs Recovery Partition vs PE Rescue Disk, confused.

Hi, you don't need the manufacturer's recovery partition unless you planned to restore the PC to as bought e.g. to sell it on.
You could create a disk image of it and save it on an external disk, then delete it from your PC.

Windows RE: Suggests you have a corrupt or missing partition - System Reserved. Note that Disk Management does not show this 16Mb partition. You need a 3rd party partition manager to see it.

See this (lots of technical detail):
Just a moment...

And do a couple of checks to see if it really is missing.

Hi, Three days of struggling to clean an infected Thinkpad so I am ready for drastic action. Wife's  T60 2007-43U rendered useless by ramnit virus. Long story, but reformat seems like only solution. Have T60 2008-SAA with as-built installation, and expect I can make  Product Recovery discs for that machine. Also have T60P 2007-8JU working fine, but with no recovery partition or great Thinkpad utilities,Sonic or WinDVD as reformat by previous owner deleted them. All three computers have XP Pro with SP-3. Questions:1. Can self-made Product Recovery Disc from one Thinkpad be used to reinstall factory load on these others?2. If so, should doing that completely clean the disk of existing virus and leave it in "new" condition?3. Understand 6 CD's make up the factory set of Recovery Discs. The  as built load is about 10GB! Is there a list somewhere of what all is included in the Recovery?  Before I start making these discs, should I expect a total of 6, more, or fewer? Thanks!

Answer:Use Product Recovery Disc on different Thinkpad for virus recovery?

1) Yes

2) You should wipe the drive with DBAN or something along those lines first.

3) The set will have a total of 7 or 8 disks altogether...Rescue & Recovery + 6 CDs + possibly supplemental CD

Good luck.

Summary: I'm trying to use the recovery disks with my SL510 and they're "hanging" before they get to the "license agreement" screen of the recovery tool. History of the problem and more details are as follows:   My SL510 is having hard drive issues. It won't boot, and gives an error message that a drive is failing with the following error code:Status: 0xc00000e9 So I went into the BIOS and ran the hard drive check, and got "Error Code: 0000 Read Verification Failed." I'm not getting the click of death. The hard drive appears to be trying to spin up fine, it's just--at minimum--corrupted as heck. Or maybe the connection where the drive is plugged in is bad. I don't know. Anyway, I ordered Rescue and Recovery media on the assumption that I'm probably going to have to replace the hard drive. Still, just in case it's fixable by a reformat or re-install, I figured I'd try the recovery media before messing with the hardware. So I moved the internal CD drive to the first position in the boot order list in the bios and saved it. No problem there. Then I put "Operating System Recovery Disc Windows 7 Professional SP 1" (disc 1 of 2) in the drive and turned the computer on. Results: I get the Thinkpad startup screen, then I get "Windows is loading files..." and the white bar that expands across the bottom of the screen as the files load. After a minute or two I get the "(c) Microsoft Corporation" logo at the bottom of the screen under a ... Read more

Answer:Error when using Rescue and Recovery disks

Update: I powered off the machine (yet again) and powered up and this time I did get to the language selection and accept licensing agreement screens. Now I've got "product recovery is restoring the system, please wait."I have no idea whether this is going to work or not. It depends on whether the hard drive was just badly corrupted and this does a low level format and manages to "fix" it, or whether the problem with the drive is more mechanical--like a bad connection between the drive itself and the rest of the system. And thus I have no idea (yet) whether my underlying problem was dying electronics or mechanical stuff OR just garden variety disk corruption. Can someone in the know tell me if behind the scenes the "product recovery" utility's idea of "preparing" the hard disk is a low level re-format or not?I did see the note in the repair manual that said recovery from disks could take up to 8 hours, so now that it's gotten this far, I will (of course) be leaving the machine completely alone overnight.

Hi All, Okay, I have been spinning my head, I have an OEM version of the Rescue and Recovery and Product Recovery disk from IBM, since the T43 that I got from someone, was wiped with a messed up XP loaded onto it.  Thus, I figure that I was restore the T43 back to factory condition. However when I have run thru disk 1-7, I get this dreaded message 'IBM Product Recovery Failure During the Convertion Phase'. Any one have any suggestions as I have run it three times and all loaded up until after the 7th disk, I get this error message when the system reboots after loading the final disk. I rather try to keep it Factory OEM, but I'm thinking, myabe I should just re-install XP on a reformated HDD, but more of a hassle to try to reload all the drivers and maybe some missing DLL files too... Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

You've got to wipe the drive clean and start fresh.

Erase the contents of the hard drive with dBan or something along those lines (PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD offers this option as well).

Choose media drive as a temporary booting device and start fresh.

Hi

First of all you will not find any Microsoft key at the bottom of the Toshiba notebooks.
Secondly the Toshiba images are already released and you don?t need to enter any keys!
If you need a Toshiba recovery CD so you should contact the Toshiba service partner in your country. There you can order the needed image.

Hey,

Last wednesday I went down to my local currys (Barrow-in-Furness) store and bought myself a Toshibe M50 (The box tells me its an M50-192)

When I went to the store there were no examples of the laptop in the store (I was only there because the Comet up the road had stopped running another laptop I wanted) - but I was offered the display model which I decided wasn't in bad nick and I would take.

The young man in the store didnt offer me any discount, but did tell me that the startup/recovery disks were not provided with the product and I would be asked to make them when setting up the computer later on. I took this in good faith and left the store.

When I got home I could not find any feature to make recovery disks for the machine, and none were in the box (which had already been opened due to it being the display model). I looked through my toshiba manual and it has a section on how to use the recovery disks - but not how to make any - with a nice picture of what look like pre-made disks. After examining my documentation I noticed that the quickstart guide tells me that in my box should be various things - computer, ac power cord, documentation and the like, AND "product recovery"

Now after that not-so-brief backround to my situation (thanks for reading by the way) I ask my question: Should I have been given these disks at the store or do they still have them? Or am I supposed to make them but have missed this because the computer was already set ... Read more

You may also just delete the files - See this link http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/907561-solved-lenovo-rescue-recovery-backups.html

Hi,I have a ThinkPad R61 (Product ID 8918A22) that was originally delivered with Vista installed.  When making the purchase the Lenovo consultant emphasised that I needed to make R&R discs BEFORE retrograding to WINXP.  I know that the first thing I did when I received the laptop was to produce three DVD's.  It is too long ago to remember exactly what I did but I marked the DVD's 1 to 3 with 'Restores to Vista'. Over the years I have done 2-3 restores using the Lenovo supplied discs to overcome sluggish behaviour. Today I did a restore using the 1st Vista DVD that I made years ago. However, it only restored to WinXP??  Additionally there was no request during this process to insert either of the other DVD's. The folders on the 1st DVD are BOOT, PREBOOT and TVTOS and a file in the root directory called BOOTMGR. The 2nd and 3rd DVD's have a folder called RRbackups.  A search of the 1st DVD for *vista* threw up D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\PCDR2D3VIDEO-VISTASPECIFIC.DLL and D:\PREBOOT\PCDRWINPE\VISTAHELPPANE.EXE.  By contrast the Lenovo supplied R&R disc has folders I386, MFG, PREBOOT, RECOVERY, SWWORK and several files in the root directory. Not surprisingly, a search for Vista on the Lenovo R&R disc showed no hits.  Several hours of browsing around various webpage and threads located advice on how to make 'Rescue Media' using ThinkVantage.  I see from one article that you need 1CD and 1 DVD to generate Vista Rescu... Answer:Rescue and recovery ThinkPad R61

Welcome to the forum!

Personally, I'd just borrow a retail copy of Vista installation disk and install it fresh, then apply any updates that you deem fit. Original Vista media would be six years old now, and require updates as well.

You might have to give Microsoft a call in order to activate it, though.

My hunch is that the media you have will not do anything but install XP...which is clearly not what you want.

Good luck.

so I partitioned my linux so I could get windows on there to play eve and other games without having to worry about ATI crap.

I have a 39GB partition formatted with NTFS that's completely blank right now with the standard boot partition, the root partition and the main filestsym partition from my linux. (default install on arch) I had to delete the swap partition in order to make a 4th partition for windows.

My problem here is that my only cd for installing XP is my old thinkpad rescue and recovery cd. I have used the cd for many a reformat but only on single partition drives. Is there any way to use the recovery cd only on my ntfs partition?

I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop which is five years old pre-installed with w7 home. I made repair and recovery disks when new, however the product key has worn off the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. The hard disk has died and I need to either reinstall from recovery disk or do a clean install to the new drive. Is it possible with the disks I have?

Answer:Dead HD Repair and recovery disks but no product key

The HP disks most likely have the key embedded and will just activate it as the machine is the same hardware minus hdd. It's like 6-7 disks right, it should boot a thing asking you to go to factory image or clean one and put the key in both.

Hi I've reading post about how to get the recovery partition back, and all I found is to use the recovery CD that you have to create it in the first place. However, my Thinkpad X201i doesn't come with Windows, it come with freeDOS. I install my own copy of Windows 7 and install all the driver from lenovo site. How can I get the recovery partition since I don't have the ability to create the recovery disc in the first place? Thanks

You can't create a recovery partition but you can create a set of Windows recovery disks from within Windows.

I am using Factory discs (2 for the Operating System, 2 for the Applications and Drivers) to perform a Rescue and Recovery. The process took reasonable time with the first three discs. It has taken about 1 1/2 hours so far (progress bar is about 40%) for the fourth disc (file being copied is 4XVPXJA0.IMZ). Is this expected (have not seen any progress in the last 20 minutes)?. If unreasonable, what can I do to halt the process and try again (I assume I'll have to begin with disc 1)? Best Regards.

Hello there, I have an IBM ThinkPad T43. The Rescue and Recovery program opens every time I power on my laptop after a failed attempt to restore my laptop to the factory settings. I can't even login to Windows because the Rescue and Recovery program opens up immediately after I turn on the power. I tried restoring my system to factory settings using the program and the Product Recovery Disc I purchased from Lenovo, in hopes to resolve the issue, but every time I'm prompt "IBM failed to restore your system". How do I stop Rescue and Recovery from opening and resume with normal startup into Windows? What should I do so that I am able to restore my laptop to factory settings? Please help if you have any suggestions. I greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Answer:IBM ThinkPad T43: Rescue and Recovery Issue

Well, my assumption is that since you've tried running the restore (ie, reset the computer to the factory settings), you don't have a Windows-install to actually boot into anymore. Since the restore failed, you have a half-installed system, and the only way to get it back to booting normally again would be to reinstall the system - either by using the factory restore, or a stand-alone Windows install-CD.

It was due to the corruption of UpdateMonitor.exe located in the below path: C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\UpdateMonitor.exe I don't wanna reinstall Rescue and Recovery (RnR), so I wonder if anybody using the same version of RnR could help me. You just need to upload the mentioned above file so that I can download and replace the corrupt one. Thank you so much!

Hi ALL, i have recently purchased 3 Lenovo L412 laptops, and they boot fine when powered on for the first time, i go through the setup, and then this is ok, reboots and enters windows, after windows updates, and i restart teh laptop, it keeps going to Rescue and recovery, the only way to get into windows is by click f8 and start windows normally. I have spoken to Lenovo and they sent me recovery discs, this still didnt resolve the problem. does anyone know of a fix for this, so i cna resolve this issue wihtout having to return all my laptops.

Answer:Thinkpad L412 keeps going to rescue and recovery

Does it go into the Lenovo branded ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery rather than the Windows Startup Repair environment?Try downloading EasyBCD and pasting in the text from the textbox on the main page.It should look something akin to this:
There are a total of 2 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Windows 7
Timeout: 30 seconds
EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\

Entry #1
Name: Windows 7
BCD ID: {current}
Drive: C:\
Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

I recently purchased a Satellite Pro A300-13X notebook with Vista Business installed.
It came with two product recovery discs to install XP professional.

Since I decided just to use XP, I followed the procedure for product recovery and I am now running XP from the first disc. It seems to run properly.

I'm unable to install the second disc and wonder where it is for. It contains 7 application files 001-002-003-004 crc and tpa.

Does anyone know what to do with this disk?

Answer:Satellite Pro A300-13X: Question regarding the Product Recovery disks

Don't know what this disc contains or how to install it, but check if everything works and if all utilities and programs are installed, which you had under Windows Vista.

i want to reformat my laptop, its a Satellite P300.... many things do not work anymore ie: system restore and corrupted c drive

1) would reformatting my laptop fix these problems?

2) 2 disks "product recovery media TOSHIBA satellite p300 etc and says windows vista ulimate 64 bit

Does that mean they contain vista? (vista came pre installed

3) should i make a copy of the vista serial PRODUCT ID that is on my system menu screen

4) how would i run these disks.....

I appreciate if you could help, its an awesome computer

Will reserach on how to run the disks, just wanting to make sure they contain vista

Answer:Satellite P300 - Does the product recovery disks contain Vista?

> 1) would reformatting my laptop fix these problems?
Probably yes

> 2) 2 disks "product recovery media TOSHIBA satellite p300 etc and says windows vista ultimate 64 bit
As far as I know P300 has been equipped with HDD recovery and the Vista 32bit was preinstalled. There should be an option which would helps to recover the notebook using the HDD recovery option. Press F8 while notebook booting up. Then choose Repair my Computer and start the HDD recovery.
This should set the machine to factory settings. Finally you could create a recovery disk using the preinstalled software called Toshiba recovery disk creator.

> 3) should i make a copy of the vista serial PRODUCT ID that is on my system menu screen
You could do this but as far as I know the Vista on the Toshiba Recovery disk is already activated and you don?t need any serial keys.

> 4) how would i run these disks.....
Usually you have to boot from such disk

PS; to get more details you should read the user manual and should read the threads in this forum!

Ok, So, I have a problem, I need to do a reinstall of XP on a T20 but, heres the deal!!  There are files on this machine that can't be delete because they r pictures.  I would boot into windows & pull the pics & things off but, I had the computer join my workgroup and it came from a domain and can no longer log in so, Is there a way I can do a  Rescue & recovery without formating the drive & keep the data?  I thought there was?  I try to press F11 to get into the  Rescue & recovery utility and nothing happens.  It boots into the XP OS.  Is there a different key to get in this tool on the T20? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

Welcome to the forum! A couple of things here: a) No T20 ever has left the factory with XP on it, so whatever version you're running is unlikely to have a recovery partition needed for the R&R to operate. b) I don't have a T20 anywhere close to  check it out myself, but I doubt that it even offers a F11 option in BIOS, or does it?  Chances are, you'll have to do a fresh install from scratch. Hope this helps.

Answer:Thinkpad R52 Recovery and Rescue blue button

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, there is no place that you could download all the contents of "IBM Tools" folder, since some of the software is copyrighted and not available for free downloads. Your best bet is to try and locate a copy of recovery disks for R52, you could probably get away with using recovery for T43 with Intel integrated graphics (model numbers 187x-xxx). Good luck and let us know.

Hello guys, I seem to be having a problem with my t43.I am trying to reset the laptop to factory setting but when i press the blue button,it seems to promp out a message asking for a password..As i can remember there is no password set for this.I tried removing the bios battery but it still promps for the password..it does not allow me to go to the rescue and recovery.. Please help.. Regards,Oceanfatboy

Answer:T43 rescue and recovery Password

I am sorry there is no way to reset the password, someone must have put it on for you. The only way for you to reformat the harddrive is for you to wipe the entire harddrive, and reinstall your XP using either the disks provided to you by IBM or using an off the shelve version of XP and then install all the necessary softwares and driver by downloading it from Lenovo, through here.

Disaster Recovery, the famous program created by Lenovo to create disaster on your computer, completly stopped the computer as it was cumulating hidden files since ever and never telling. So, struggling with the message "Missing operating system" and other oddies, I came to the conclusion (agreed with support) that I needed the backup recovery from CD (60 bucks!) and once I received it started immediate actions to solve the problem by installing the Rescue and Recovery stuff. It starts checking lots of things and after a while it will ask me a password that I should know, but I don't.After 3 retries it becomes locked and I have to restart the whole process again. Good news: the opearting system is still living below. The bad news is that I cannot make any progress at all and I'm still stuck at that point.Do not ask me what coul be the password for that thing, maybe I never used it. Is there at least one number to call and obtain an alternate password and progress? Thanks

I have an x41 with a painfully unbearable slow HDD. I have backed everything up and am ready to perform the Rescue and Recovery, but I have one little problem. I can not remember the Rescue and Recovery password it is prompting me for.

I'm not sure what password it is asking for either. Is it the supervisor password?

I do NOT have a HDD password NOR do I have a BIOS password set (I can access BIOS with out a problem).

So I have spent about a week researching how to get past this Rescue and Recovery password. I have two solutions.

This is from the Lenovo site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-55198

I need a clarification for this solution though. The article is telling me to, "...you will need to uninstall and reinstall the IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore software." Now do I just use 'Add / Remove Programs in the Control Panel to uninstall?

Also, where do I get the software to reinstall?

This is another solution using a keymaker and soldering pins, which looks very ugly and something I really do not want to do, but has anyone done this? Does it work?

I am of course open to your suggestions too.

Thanks
Mike

Hi, I have a ThinkCentre A50 that is being returned by a client.  I want to restore it back to factory defaults, however there is a password on the Rescue and Recovery Partition.  I have tried creating the restore media but it still requires a password.  Is there any workaround to this password? Machine Type: 8148-22U

Answer:ThinkCentre A50 Rescue and Recovery Password

Already found a workaround.  I uninstalled the Rescue and Recovery program in Windows.  However, the R&R partition still asked for a password.  I tried the recovery CDs, that I created beforehand, and they no longer required a password.

I need to make a rescue/recovery/restore disk/usp for computer.  started process and got to the part that said "you can only make one copy"  or You have one shot at this so you better get it right. I was given a number to call when HP returned my computer but the number is not valid, and refers to another number which is always busy If I do try and make this rescue/recover/restore disk and mess up can it be reversed.  Remember I don't have recover/rescue disk.  Going to try HP again

Answer:Rescue Recovery USB or disk

You do have a recovery partition on the hard drive which can be used to recover. What advice do you want before going forward? You have burnable disks or a usb thumb drive ready to write, corrrect? The process is pretty automatic.

I do not own an optical cd/dvd disk, and was wondering if I could swap my internal OEM harddrive with a new internal western digital 320gb 7200rpm using my western digital external harddrive only.  I have never made recovery disks, and have used the rescue and recovery to set up rescue media and a complete backup onto my external harddrive.  When I try to make recovery discs with my external harddrive plugged in it doesn't give me any options for "Select Recordable Drive."   Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Create set of Product Recovery Disks now - onto External HDD and boot off that to swap harddrives

http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/ use this to do an image of the old drive and transfer the image onto the new hdd.

I am no newbie. I've done dozens of clean installs of WinXP and Linux on Intel boxes of various flavors. My Thinkpad T42 has managed to thwart me. Arghh! Where I am at:1) Wiped hard disk2) Purchased Rescue and Recovery CD and ThinkPad Product Recovery CDs (7-pack)3) Installed Rescue/Recovery and navigated to "return to factory settings"4) Installed ThinkPad Product Recovery CDs. Following the required reboot after the 7th disk in the Product Recovery series I am immediatetly directed back to Rescue/Recovery hell and not into WinXP as I assumed. Huh? Could someone, anyone please rescue me from rescue/recovery hell. I just want my WinXP back. Thanks,Doug

Hello:

Lenovo x140e laptop / 2.05 BIOS:
(image link removed)

I have used Lenovo Rescue / Recovery to make a full disk image backup to DVDs for installation of SSD drive.

Attempting to boot from Rescue / Recovery DVD appears to load Windows files, start Windows then goes to this Lenovo R&R screen:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f4h423vbk1rpfm0/2014-09-18%2008.53.21.jpg?dl=0

No menus show up asking to restore anything, in about 5 seconds it shuts down and reboots again over and over.

I did have BIOS 2.01 and upgraded it using Lenovo BIOS boot DVD upgrader, now is 2.05 and same result.

Factory reset would be OK, but tI paid extra for Windows 7 pro "downgrade" (ironic, no?) that I would like to keep.  System restore disks that came with theunit are for Windows 8.1 .

Help?

I have purchased a X220 and have installed Rescue & Recovery 4.5. My OS is Windows 7 64bit. I am wanting to set a password on Rescue & Recovery so that when any user tries to open the software, from within Windows, they have to enter a password. Is this possible?

Answer:Need to Password Protect Rescue & Recovery 4.5 on my X220

That's not a feature of R&R.

But windows has a feature where you can restrict access to any application that you specify:  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/80605-applications-prevent-running-specified-programs.html

The way this would work, is that you log into the computer as "admin" then you can run any application that you want.  Your other users log into the computer as "user" and then they are only allowed the run the applications that you specify.

thanks for taking time to read this.... i have a lenovo N500 and it has become unbootable.  i have looked at the rescue/recovery disk set i made when i first got the computer and am tempted to use it.  however, i'm not sure if it wipes the drive or gives me a chance to repair the drive first.

Answer:question about rescue and recovery disk

hi nworbekim,

Welcome to Lenovo Communityf Forums!

If your Os is Windows 7

If you use the One Key Recovery / Create Recovery CD / Initial Backup
Then it would load the system back to that state deleting all current Data and files on Drive C:

as an alternative...

Check this thread for downloading a Windows 7 ISO and burn it into DVD as bootable.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Win-7-ISO-DVDs/m-p/894353#M33884

Use that and start it as you'll install an OS, then you will reach a page like this

Choose the repair your computer option to repair your non bootable Windows.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Hello every one.  I was trying to restore the T61 7660-CTO to it's original setup using the Rescue & Recovery 4 program.  After re-booting the system as requested by the program, a Product Recovery Supplimentary Disk was being requested.  I answered no because I didn't have one.  So the next command was to Insert Product Recovery Disk 1, so I placed back the CD I was using (the one generated by the R & R program).  Unfortunately an error message appeared "this is not the correct disk.  Removed the disk and press cancel".  So now the T61 is just looping and the R & R process is not proceeding.  Need you help please.  Thanks in advance.

Answer:T400 ThinkPad not booting to windows, will boot to Rescue Recovery but cannot restore

any 2.5 inch SATA hdd with 7 mm or 9.5 mm will work, advanced format system won't matter provide you are not using Lenovo Recovery media or cloning the old hdd. I would say just get a Windows 7 or Windows 8 retail installation media, and not use the recovery media for your new hdd. If you are using the recovery media, AFS hdd won't work properly. Also they cost about 50 dollars from Lenovo.

I got this compute and it's asking me to put in the built in HDD password, which I do not have so I purchased the recovery disks. I did what it said but didn't do anything? Help me please!

Answer:How to use recovery disks to get rid of hdd password?

The HDD Password is designed to protect the data on the drive, you cannot remove it unless you know the password.

So the previous owner needs to enter the password, or the HDD will need to be replaced.

My IBM Thinkpad T43p (2668-CE6) is a refurbished PC which I purchased directly from IBM (IBM Certified Pre-Owned PCs webpage). It came with the IBM Recovery Partition, but the blue "Access IBM" button didn't access anything and there was no ?Access IBM? program on the computer.  I downloaded the "Access IBM" online user?s guide for T43p and the driver needed for the blue "Access IBM" button to connect to the "Access IBM" that I had downloaded.  I want to create a set of recovery CDs of the pre-installed software (Windows XP Prof.), so that I can restore the computer to its factory state when I need to replace the existing hard drive.  The ?Access IBM? online user?s guide gives the following instructions for creating these recovery disks:  Start / Programs / Access IBM / Create Recovery Disks.?  But, the problem is, the ?Create Recovery Disks? option does not appear on my T43p.  All I can get is the online user?s guide that I had downloaded.  Is there some way that I can still create a set of recovery CDs for the pre-installed software?  Thank you for your help.

Answer:Create Recovery Disks for IBM Thinkpad T43p (2668-CE6)

The laptop has no IBM/Lenovo preinstallation.
You can clone the drive onto an external drive and restore it from there in the case of emergency. Otherwise if the directory C:\i386 exists you my be able to create a clean insallation-CD from it.

Annother way is to buy the recovery disks in ebay.

I've recently taken delivery of my a new Thinkpad X260.  Like a good little user, the first thing I did was run the utilty which created a recovery disk on a USB drive, which I've stored away carefully. Now.  When I ordered the X260 from Lenovo, I deliberately specified it to be supplied preinstalled with Windows 7 Professional 64, through the downgrade rights in Windows 10 Pro.   I had first established that if and when I wish to upgrade to Windows 10, that will not be a problem for me.  All good. What I am keen to know is, should I ever need to use the recovery USB drive which I created, will that let me reinstall either Windows 10 or 7, or is there anything else which I should be doing to be sure about this? Thanks

Hi there,

I have a lenovo think pad x100e with windows 7. Two days ago while using the word processor it began to freeze and show weird translucent screenshot like images. I suspect this started to happen after I installed f.lux to decrease blue light on my screen. The first time the freeze happened the system eventually unfroze but the second time, I tried many times to press Ctrl+alt+Del and the system rebooted and since then I have not been able to get into the operating system. It keeps indicating that windows is loading and showing the bar indicating progress and then it will send me to the thinkvantage rescue and recovery 4 screen. After 10 or 15 minutes a window will indicate that the rescue and recovery workspace is starting and it may be another 15-20 minutes before it indicates it is checking for repairs. It appears to still be processing and not frozen (I can move the mouse/cursor) but I've left it on overnight before and it never completes the repairs or restarts like it indicates will happen once they are completed. Occasionally it won't even get to the checking for repairs window.

This process happens whether I choose the option to continue with windows normally or the option to check for repairs. Also if I interrupt normal startup and hit f11 or try to go into the setup utility. When I try to run diagnostics I get errors. Verification failed.

I was just at the end of writing a 250 page book and I'd like to be able to recover that file and othe... Read more

Bought a brand new X1 Carbon a couple of days ago.  Came pre-installed with Win10 Pro and I would like to downgrade it to Win7 Pro.  I have my Win 7 CD (Microsoft Select) and I have a Win 7 USB install, and when I go to install from either media, Win7 does not see the 256GB SSD in the X1.  It's prompting me for storage drives.  And the only driver available on Lenovo's support site is the Rapid Storage Driver which doesn't work either.  Win7 setup doesn't list any other attached drives when I want to "browse" for the driver. I have gone into the BIOS and have disabled secure boot, set the UEFI/Legacy to boot into Legacy only and set the OS Optimized Defaults to disabled.  I've played with all these and am not able to get any combination to work. From the Windows 7 setup, I have also gone into the DISKPART, selected DISK0 and did a clear all, created a new partition and made it active and still Win7 setup won't see the drive or the partition.  Frustrates me that in Diskpart, it sees the 256GB SSD, but not during the actual setup. AND I do have the Lenovo Recovery CD's for Windows 7 for the X1 Carbon 20FB that I created from a previous laptop and tried that.  It boots up but I get a Recovery Failed message when I agree to the terms. It shouldn't be this hard to install Win7 on this laptop since there are X1 Carbons that come preinstalled with Win 7.  My mistake for not buying that model but stock is scarce for tho... I should also mention.  I have a Windows 8.1 Pro USB Install as well as a Windows 10 Enterprise USB Install as part of my Microsoft Select, and they both see the 256GB SSD drive to select for the OS.  And the Windows 7 Professional USB Install does work on an older laptop. So I'm thinking it's an issue with Windows 7 and that crappy UEFI BIOS or something along that line.  Not everything is lined up correctly to install Win7.

Hi,I have been using an Iomega eGO external USB drive for backups.I have been able to list and remove backups (when required) when in Windows 7 and running Rescue & Recovery, but I am unable to get a list of backups when booting from a Recovery DVD into Rescue & Recovery. Basically I am replacing the unencrypted hard drive with an SSD that supports encryption. The aim was to use a full backup made immediately prior to removing the HDD to restore the full system. When booting from the recovery DVD, the Rescue & Recovery utility doesn't list any backups, even when the tick box for listing backups for other systems is checked. It makes no difference whether selecting ALL locations or External USB Drive. Any ideas? Backups aren't much good if you can't retrieve them.If my old disk had failed then I'd be in a worse state than this. I can't say that I'm impressed.

Answer:Rescue & Recovery lists no backups on Iomega USB eGO disk

Hello and welcome,

Has R&R been updated since you made your bootable DVD?  It's possible there's a version mismatch between your backups and your R&R DVD.

You might try burning a new rescue CD - or whatever it's called on your machine, "bootable media" maybe.  That may be able to find your backups.

hi ghadeer103un-installing the linux has changed the mbr settings so you'll need to re-install the operation system.( if you have dvd or able to access "windows recovery" try it but i don't think you'll be able to access. )you'll also need to delete the new volume ( the one you created for linux and extend it back ) after, when you press one key recover, you'll be able to re-install the operation system.hope this helps.ps: there are some ways to fix boot mbr issue, please, search the forum.

My gf said her lenovo is getting slow so I decided to get her an SSD and do a fresh install of win7 on it. She has 3 DVDs created which I believe believe from the lenovo Rescue and recovery software. They are DVD1) lenovo recovery boot.DVD2) lenovo recovery data1.DVD3) lenovo recovery data2. I swapped in the SSD  and booted with the DVD labeled as "recovery boot" and i enter the lenovo recovery screen with 3 options1) quick restore (grayed out, cant be selected)2) full restore3) rescue files. I chose full restore and select DVD/CD to locate backup , but it didn't find anything. I subsequently put in DVD2 and DVD3 , it didn't find any backup and prompted for a "final C" DVD. At this point I'm thinking GF didn't create her recovery disk properly. I popped in her original HDD and try to create another recovery disk but it says it can only be done once.Do you think she's missing a final C disk? Is there a way to move forward with installing win 7 on her SSD besides recovery DVD from lenovo? Her laptop model is thinkpad edge 0578 , win 7 home edition. she bought it 2 years ago and it's probably out of warranty.

Not excacly sure how it happend, but is there anyway to get the partion back and/or get a recovery disk?
