Trackpoint issues on T60 - keeps pushing the wrong way after use

Question: Trackpoint issues on T60 - keeps pushing the wrong way after use

Hi,I have had this issue with another Lenovo laptop, too, but my current laptop is a T60. Sometimes (unpredictably), I may move the Trackpoint into one direction to move the mouse cursor, and as soon as I let go, the mouse cursor moves in the opposite direction for about 2 seconds or so.This is highly annoying and disruptive. Any idea what could cause this? This has happened ever since I bought the laptop (new), so it should not be a matter of "worn out".Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks! I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I know the Trackpoint on this generation has been discussed a lot already, but I have not seen anyone report this particular issue, and wanted to see if others can reproduce it.  I've been using an X200 for the last few years and finally moved up to the X250 now that decent screen options are available and the Trackpoint's physical buttons have returned. It's awesome... on the whole.  I got the machine yesterday, but to my surprise, I could not effectively navigate using the Trackpoint. Even with the Trackpad disabled, I found the Trackpoint giving me all sorts of trouble:  Left clicks constantly turning into drags. Drags not releasing (left button is released to drop, but drag remains in operation - item is not dropped). Left clicks not registering at all. I spent hours experimenting with drivers, kernels (in Linux), software settings etc. with no success, but now I have figured out what is happening: Coming from the X200 with no trackpad, I am used to resting my palm (base of thumb) on the wristpad beneath the trackpoint buttons. When I do this on the X250, I am resting my palm on the inactive trackpad. It turns out, even though the trackpad is deactivated (at both OS and BIOS levels), broad physical skin contact with the trackpad causes the trackpoint buttons to become unresponsive - it's as if I am stressing the internals of the trackpoint / pad combo system and it can only handle so much input, so it consta... Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

My couple week old T400 is having some TrackPoint issues. The cursor doesn't jump, I've checked all my settings, and the touchpad is off. What is does do is when I navigate upwards, sometimes the cursor will slowly move downwards on the screen without me touching it, for at least 2 full seconds. It moves slowly, not quickly, sort of like the Trackpoint not resetting to its neutral position. Does anyone else have issues where the cursor using the trackpoint doesn't completely stop moving? Even sometimes when trying to navigate to click a point on the screen, the cursor will push itself downward, so I end up having to exert even more pressure to get it to move in the opposite direction I want to go. Sorry if this isn't a good explanation of my issue, it's a bit hard to explain. Again, the touchpad is off and the click feature for the TrackPoint is also off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions (hopefully solutions!)!Message Edited by song510 on 06-16-2009 09:40 AM

I had recently done an update using ThinkVantage. It changed the behavior of my trackpoint (pressing the middle now doesnt scroll up and down). It does however put a small round picture and it seems to allow me to scroll on any direction EXCEPT in places where the location has a clickable link. This means that the scroll function of the trackpoing cannot be used in windows start menu, etc. The issue though is that when I try hit Fn+F8, then "manage settings" - it says "unable to connect to synaptics pointing driver..." etc. then it asks me if I "...want to uninstall the driver?" Also, in folder view, hitting the center button now drags the file instead of allowing me to scroll - which is an unexpected (i believe incorrect) behavior Is this supposed to happen? My laptop is the T410s, touchscreen.

I've got my P70 recently, and everything works well except I have 2 issues with the keyboard and trackpoint working together: 1) Holding down Fn keys with left click and drag of the trackpoint does not work: this is incredibly frustrating, for example pan, rotate, and zoom in autodesk inventor are bound to F2-F4 keys with left mouse click 2) There is about a 1-2 second lockout period for the trackpoint left click button after any keyboard button press. For example when trying to edit a bunch of lines in code, typing and moving to a new location does not work, because you have to keep left clicking untill the lockout expires.  Both of these issues make the machine essentially unusable in any professional software, either CAD or software development.  None of these issues show up if I plugin the old usb thinkpad travel keyboard that also has a trackpoint in it, so this must be either a hardware or a driver bug in the P70 itself.  Anybody else expririncing this issue or know a solution to this? Or perhaps I just got some bad hardware?

I want to report several issues with TrackPoint. Basic InfoLaptop: X1 carbon 3rd genModel: 20BT-CTO1WWOS: Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Win 7 Pro)TouchPad driver: Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver ver.  Issue 1: TrackPoint does not work with MS Office 2016 (except Word).Mid button + TrackPoint cannot scroll horizontally in Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. Scrolling vertically works well.Horizontal scroll works well with Word 2016, Notepad, Microsft Edge, Firefox, etc.Horizontal scroll works well in Excel 2016 with ThinkPad mouse (model: MORFGOO) with mouse suite. Issue 2: TrackPoint calibrates even in mid button + TrackPoint mode.If you tilt TrackPoint steadily for a few seconds, it calibrates and takes it as new zero position. This is a correct behavior. If you hold mid button and tilt TrackPoint steadily (i.e. scrolling), it should never calibrate. This is another correct behavior which was seen with my previous ThinkPad notepads. However, my X1c TrackPoint calibrates even when mid button is held. After 0.5~1 seconds, the scroll stops. When releasing, the mouse pointer moves automatically. This is annoying. Issue 3: Mouse pointer changes size when mid button is pressed. The same as this post.  I use TrackPoint a lot with Excel and the above issues lower efficiency.I hope there will be new Synaptics driver to resolve the issues. btw, I'm not sure which is the best way to report bugs, because there are tooooooo many Lenovo and ThinkP... I own a late 2015 Thinkpad t450s. It was fine for a long time but since few months cursor is drifting most of the time and Trackpoint stops working for a few seconds to minutes on it's own. What I have done till now: * Backed up and re-installed older version of Windows. * Tested on safe mode * Cleaned Trackpoint from dusts etc. I also used mouse and not the trackpoint but it still does that. I cannot stand to this behaviour of  the cursor anymore. Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is Read more

Hello,  I just got this TP Yoga and have had some issues with it right away.  First, the trackpoint is not working.  Second, my bluetooth mouse is very laggy.  Basically, everytime I leave it for a few seconds I need to double click or move it for abotu 2-3 seconds before it starts working again.  These things combined make this very annoying to work on.  What I have done: restarted the computer, reinstalled windows, updated to the latest drivers on the lenovo website, then called tech support.  My option now is to send it back and lose my computer for 10 days.   Anyone else have any suggestions?   Thank you all!

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Firstly I'll explain the freezing issue (this is now the 3rd time I've typed this, as the first two times my laptop froze before I finished!)I run my laptop with the battery at 100% and plugged in and that's fine; as is running it on battery. The problem arises when my battery is low and I plug it into recharge. Soon after it's running on a/c the screen will go black and only way to shut down is by holding the power button. If I try to restart it too soon, the indicator lights next to the power button will illuminate, but the screen will stay black. Usually after 5-10 minutes it'll boot to the IBM screen & boot the rest of the way, but not too long into normal operation it'll go black again (sometimes hitting ctrl/alt/del will bring the screen back but it would be very distorted (pixilized) and would go black again and reboot. What could be causing these problems while recharging the battery? I've tried this with a couple different batteries (both OEM IBM) and it does it with both.  Secondly, both left and right "mouse" buttons are now nonfunctional (though the middle button of the track points works.) I have the latest version of Ultranav Wizard and all the buttons are enabled. The touch pad and trackpoint ball work fine, just the 2 left and 2 right buttons do not. What could be the culprit for this issue? Luckily I have a usb mouse so that's what I'm using for the time being.Message Edited by GoalieFergy53 on 02-14-2009 02:30 PM

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

I have an X60 Tablet PC. Trackpoint scrolling works fine in programs running directly on the computer. When I log in through Windows RDP and run a program on one of our servers, the trackpoint scrolling feature does not work. For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)? Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Hi folks,

Here's the setup:

3 desktops:
- 1 runs Windows XP Home SP2
- Two run Windows Vista Home Premium

My laptop: Running XP Pro SP3

Every computer is hooked via ethernet into the same router.

All the other computers do not use a firewall. My laptop does.

The three desktops are all in the same workgroup, named WORKGROUP. They can see each other on the network fine and dandy.
I set my laptop's workgroup to WORKGROUP as well. I even completely disabled my firewall.

when I go My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup I get a message saying that the Workgroup is not accessible.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Help's appreciated,

Answer:Not sure what I'm doing wrong - Networking Issues

Enable ALL firewalls. The firewalls are enabled by default in Vista as well as XP, so you must have turned them off. If you had configured the Network Internet & File Sharing properly, the firewalls would also be configured, so no need to turn them off at all. Get back into the Network & Sharing settings and enable file sharing properly. Take your time and look at all options

I didnt pay more attention, turned all powers off and rebooted and it worked, except during the stream i played with low settings and using OBS with 2200 kbs. It complained the whole time that GPU usage is high even though it hasnt done anything like that before. I rebooted again and it looked seemingly okay.
Then i switched to Witcher. I was honestly paranoiac and kept looking cpu with task manager and GPUwith GPU-Z. Cpu usage was around 60-90&, 100 when loading critical things. Someone please help me. I have posted a thread 2 or 3 days ago about problems I am having with my laptop. Nobody has responded yet. But I am not having even more serious issues with my laptop.
I was on my laptop about an hour ago, and I was on the internet... it started not responding... SO i looked at the task manager and I had 175 processes running... about 120 of them were a program called mrc243.exe (i think that was what it was called..I got so freaked out that i cant remember)...I think it was in a folder called
PLUGS which was in the AppData Roaming folder or something like that....
Also when I looked in the prosesses that were running, there was a process called vii.exe or soemthing..which said Remote Desktop or something... I never had my remote desktop enabled. I have a feeling that someone is hacking into my laptop and destroying it slowly.
I can not log on to the laptop anymore.. everytime I do, i just get the BSOD. I try to go on safe mode and everytime I do, it starts up and some virus scanner keeps trying to run, and i look in the remote desktop section and it is enabled..I disable it, Apply it and close it... yet I restart it and it is once again enabled...
I have tried going in safe mode and doing system restore and it says that it restored successfully, yet still BSOD...
I am really freaking out. I dont know what I would do if I lost everything on my laptop.

Just looking at your parts I'd say the Apevia power supply is a prime suspect. Just because a few fans spin up it doesn't mean it's good.

Did you plug a power connector into the video card?

I hope the problem isn't the video card as BFG is no longer in business, when did you buy this stuff?

I decided to run a couple of programs on my laptop that were supposed to help "tweak" my system and make it run faster/smoother (TuneUP Utilities 2009 & lolo memory mechanic from Crucial). Since running these programs I've noticed issues on bootup and I'm noticing new process's running on my system that are eating up CPU power & memory. Whenever I restart my computer (before my log in screen shows up) I get this following message on a blank screen;

"Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Windows has finished checking the disk

After screen goes away things seem to run as normal, except that my bootup time has increased quite a bit and my system is very sluggish for a few minutes after logging in.

Whenever I bring up the Task Manager I notice these *NEW* processes;

#1. unsecapp.exe (location: C:\Windows\System32\wbem
#2. WmiPrvSE.exe (Right clicking for properties or location doesn't work)

So I decided a while ago that I wanted to start building and messing around with computers. I upgraded my video card in my HP Pavilion a752n to a ATI HD 4850 and put in 2 gigs of Crucial ram. This was really all I needed at the time since all I was playing was World of Warcraft, which is the opposite of a demanding game.

I recently decided I wanted to do all of my gaming on pc and wanted to build a good gaming computer. I ordered an Intel core 2 duo e8400 and 2 more gigs of Crucial ram. Now I'm waiting on my tax return to buy all of the other components, but I wanted to see how the new processor worked in my current computer for a preview.

I made the huge mistake of not researching the compatibility of my a752n's motherboard with my new e8400. I installed the new processor and fired her up and got nothing. The fan was spinning on the cpu and something sounded like it was running, but none of the power lights were on except for the very small one on the front which is under what looks like a battery symbol. That light was a steady orange. This morning I put the old cpu and fan back in and I got the same issue.

When it first fired up and I got nothing after I put the new cpu/fan in I figured it was just a compatibility issue. Now that this is happening with the old cpu/fan back in, I'm not sure of what to do. I don't know if it's that easy to fry a power supply or what. The power supply is only 430 watts. I have a general understanding of the compone... Read more

Try resetting your CMOS on your motherboard, the directions should be in the manual. I really don't thing what you did would kill the power supply, but this is an odd problem.

Question: Pushing XP SP2

Ok, We are doing a test of a good way to push out SP2 on a network of about 300 computers, we are gonna try and push it with managed softare with AD and GPO, we have started the install over a 10mbit hub connection on a laptop that is a celeron 800 with 128 mb of ram, it started at 6:38... Anybody else have ideas on how to push it out, SUS is not an option as it would go to all machines at once...

Answer:Pushing XP SP2

hmm, I don't know how, but our IT department does all our the updates thru their server in their Dallas office over our T1 line. I will email a friend there and ask him the basics of doing it.

I think it all has to do with the clients being pointed to a different server than Microsoft's server and then you load up what updates you want on your server for the clients and then set the clients Windows Updates automaticaly.

Hi, I have read and tried to do everything that I have seen posted here for fixing the Java issues and getting rid of tojans, virus and the like, but I must be missing something because someone of them keep popping back up.

I installed Java Sun and had problems, so I followed in the instructions for loading MS Java 3805 and 3810 respectively and that worked. The problem is where I thought I was loading it versus where it loaded, because it only works under my partition and not my husband's or son's.

I have already ran Adware, Spyblaster and Norton. The only listed item I would not find and delete was one of the Malware .dll, for Speed*.

I keep seeing Malare and Search from 180 solutions. I delete the folders and seach through the registry keys. Delete everyone that I can find related to them, but they keep popping up.

First time poster here so I hope you can help please.

I've been having a problem with IE6 for some time in that it works fine but just won't access certain sites - Microsoft, First Direct and VCOM (my virus software provider) to name a few specific ones.

I thought I'd try and solve this by updating to XP SP2 (from SP1) and installing IE7 - both seemingly work fine but I still can't access these sites.

Also when starting up IE7 it tries to locate a site:
(which just doesn't load - same problem as above?) even though I have set my home page to Google - this only appears if I stop the other site loading and click on the Home icon.

I have read through some of the previous IE posts and done the 'Reset' as advised - to no avail.

Hope someone can help

Many thanks

I was installing windows 7 on a computer that had windows XP installed.

I accidentally installed win7 on a different partition (assumed the largest was the one that had XP on it!) so now issues are arising. Note: there is only 1 physical hard drive.

I found a similar thread detailing a solution here: Changing Win7 System/Boot Partition without Reinstall

However, while my situation is nearly identical, the problem is that my C: drive is marked as logical while my F: drive is the primary and I haven't found a way to change that.

C: (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, logical)
F: (System, Active, Primary Partition)

I've been able to make F: inactive, but that doesn't matter because I'm still unable to make C: active since it's logical. Ideally I'd like to have C be everything and F: just be a logical drive, or simply wipe it out and have a single partition.

thank you for any help!

edit: I dl'd a program to try and do what windows wouldn't let me do... now after a few window startup repairs using the win7 install disk I still can't boot so may just have to reinstall the OS. With that in mind... do I install it over the win7 partition or the XP partition for easiest resolution of this matter?

Answer:Installed OS on wrong Partition, causing issues

I'm having firewall issues...I think...No, scratch that. I have no idea. Something is stopping most of my apps from connecting to the internet, except for browsers. I tried shutting the firewall down, but that didn't help. I'll link to screenshots found in my Google Drive, but they will be deleted once my problem is solved. Gotta save space, I'm already paying for it.

And for some history... Let's see... The first weird thing that happened was that my computer was really slow, so I uninstalled several apps that I remember installing but not using. But I decided to do it in Safe Mode since my computer was so bogged down. While the files were erasing, I decided to play games online, but apparently my WiFi card shuts off when I use Safe Mode. Later, I restarted, and it's going WAY faster. So far so good, but later I noticed that my copy of AVG wouldn't update. Then multiplayer games wouldn't work! Then I tried installing Firefox Aurora (Their nightly build version). It needs to update right before you install, so you get the installer, and it downloads the updated portions. Result: FAIL. And I also use software, and they quit updating too! And I also use a browser with built-in security called Comodo Dragon. FAIL. Nothing's working! What's going on?!

I've tried a lot of things to solve it. Tweaking firewall options, shutting the firewall down, scanning for what viruses I can find while handicapped...... Read more

My laptop has been having some issues lately but I cannot figure out what is wrong with it. I have ran anti-virus and malware checks but both have come back negative. The main issue is whenever a video is playing or something using flash is running, it goes very slow. Most recently, I've been trying to watch a movie that is on my HD, not online and every couple minutes it kinda freezes but either plays the audio very slow or repeats one second of it on loop while the video is frozen. Another issue I've had is with flash games online, those are pretty much unplayable and yes I've cleared all cache, cookies, browser history and am still having the issue. So it appears most of my issues are video related but I'm not sure how to check what's wrong with it. Any ideas?

Hello,I have Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z and using Linux (really I am more satisfied with Linux now than I was with Win7).The only problem I have is the occasional screen flickering (monitor turns off and on few times in a row). Usually this annoyance happens once or two times per day.The issue happened with older Linux kernel too (3.10) and now with 3.13.5-gentoo.The issue happened with with various versions of xorg-server, with and KDE environment and with fluxbox too. The issue is not isolated to specific application I run.I use Intel video driver (it's fast) but I experienced the flicker with Uvesafb too (but less often).Dmesg log tells I should upgrade my BIOS however my BIOS is quite recent, just few months old because I upgraded it in the past two times:DMI: LENOVO 3399BFG/MAHOBAY, BIOS 9XKT28AUS 10/22/2013[ 4.584779] [drm] Wrong MCH_SSKPD value: 0x16040307[ 4.584781] [drm] This can cause pipe underruns and display issues.[ 4.584782] [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this. Will Lenovo issue an BIOS upgrade to address the Wrong MCH_SSKPD value?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

The problem I'm having is that when I boot up my computer I get little message saying something about the timeticks are wrong. I look at the time in the bottom right corner and its way off. When I go to change it, the month and the year are waaaayyy off like "277782". Once I change it everything is ok but when I go and turn it off then turn it back on, everything is wrong again.

My other issue is that I've notice when my computer is loading sometimes I get a "CMOS settings is wrong" message. Since I don't know the exact problem I just choose the "F2" default settings. It starts up but I have to go and change the clocks settings again.

Can someone please help me? If it is the CMOS settings can you give me the steps on how to change what I need to change in there?

How old is the computer? It may be as simple as a wore out battery. It's prob a CR2032 watch battery and is pretty easy to spot on the motherboard. This is the first thing I would look at.

Ok well first off I have attched a DxDiag and two hijackthis files. The first Hijack this file is when most processes are running and the second is when I have closed as many things on the taskbar as possible without it becoming inconvenient.

Now here is the problem, when playing World of Warcraft I normally run at about 120 frames per second. I am not sure if the computer specs I entered when registering show up in this post so I will just add that I have a 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, and an 8800GTX.

Now this should be more than enough to run WoW at max settings comfortably, and it usually is. The problem I am experiencing is at seemingly random intervals my computer will become extremely bogged down. The frame rate will drop to well below 30fps sometimes hitting as low as 5fps. This will happen even if I turn the settings all to low. When this first started happening I thought that perhaps my virus scanner was turning on during game play but this wasn't the issue. I have tried closing any and all programs running in the background and it doesn't seem to fix the issue.

Usually the only way to temporarily fix this is to restart my computer as even if I restart World of Warcraft the problem persists. Once the computer has been restarted the game usually runs fine for a few hours though sometimes it happens again right away. I recently cleaned out my case to make sure it wasn't over heating as well.

Now this isn't a problem I have always had. W... Read more

Is it possible to use Windows to take a wifi signal into the computer and then run a cable to an AP say in another room and retransmit that same signal? I know that sounds ridiculous but I am really curious if this is possible.

Answer:Wifi and Pushing it

In a practical sense, yes; you can make the original AP, computer, ethernet cable and second AP all part of the same network.

In a physical sense, capturing the radio signal and stuffing it through a cable and out the other AP, no.

I'm about to order a new (used) video card, a 9800GTX+, which is quite power hungry. I am confident that my PSU will be able to handle the card, but, since it is an nVidia card, I could theoretically install my PCIe x1 8500gt along with it in order to run triple monitors.

I have used a PSU calculator, which gives a result of around 400 watts. If I add in the extra 30% usually recommended, my PSU does not make the cut.

Here are all the components I would like to power:

PSU- PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500 watt- 35A @ 12 V

Phenom II X3 710, not overclocked
GeForce 9800GTX+ 512 mb
GeForce 8500GT 256 mb, modded to fit PCIe x1
4x1Gb DDR2
2x3.5" HDD's (one is a WD green)
DVD drive
Coolit Eco CPU cooler
5 fans

Any opinions on whether or not my PSU could handle both cards?

Answer:Pushing the limits of my PSU

Theoretically your PSU will do ok. The 35A on the 12V rails is decent enough. However, it's a very tight call. If the efficiency is low you may experience problems. OCing will be out of the question.

If I were you I would look into getting a >=600W power supply.

Question: Pushing Windows 10

Whats with the push on Windows 10? I can't even set my update option correctly due to them changing it from an "Optional"update to a" Important" update. Tried it before when they said it was ready but it wasn't, then played hell removing it. The programs weren't compatible at all.

Answer:Pushing Windows 10

NOW-WHAT MS is obsessed with reaching the one BILLION mark with Windows 10 -- really!! When making it available for free didn't do that, MS resorted to tricking folks into upgrading to Win10 -- by hiding the option to refuse the upgrade in Windows Update. When that didn't work, MS resorted to pushing Win10 even harder so that now, it's really hard to avoid the Upgrade. Fortunately, not EVERYONE wants Win10 forced on them, so enterprising folks have come up with ways to avoid being forced into the Upgrade. Suggest using this utility:  GRC | Never10   Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution" -- to help others find the solution.========================================================================

Hi everyone.

I did a new install of Windows yesterday and installed only what I really needed. The SSD is 120GB, but is 111GB for obvious reasons. Well, I almost ran out of space yesterday and I have no idea out.

If I highlight all of my folders on the drive and check the properties it states that 37.6GB is being used in them. WHen I go to My Computer, the drive states that only 33.4GB is available. There is 40GB that is being used, but not being shown anywhere. How would a new install and all folders being about 40GB somehow double what's being used? What would I look into to see what's going on? Thanks in advance!

Hi, all.

Before I start, my CPU is an A8-5600K and the mobo is FM2A75M-DGS. What I think is happening is the mobo is reading the CPU socket temp where it should be reading the core and/or package temp.

So, a while ago I was having some CPU overheating issues so bought a new cooler and all is well now. Tonight I decided to play around with my fan control and used my mobo utility program.

Here's my issue. In this pic you can see a comparison between the utility and HWiNFO64. My mobo is going by the green ~25C temperature, but there's also the temp marked in red, which is the same one I get in Speccy and my Afterburner overlay when playing games.

I started adjusting this a couple of days ago when I set up my fan control in BIOS and then noticed that the CPU fan never got louder, not even while playing a game and the overlay was showing temps at around ~68C which is way over my set 45 one after which the fan should kick it up a notch or two. I then switched it back to full power and the temp readings normalized.

So, going back to today, I decided to do the same thing in the utility program and find it hard to believe that my CPU temp is 25C with room temperature of around 22 and a bunch of programs open. Not to mention my case which is terrible airflow-wise. The temp also didn't change at all in a period of about 5 minutes, when normally CPU temps keep changing, even if just a little.

Basically, I'm just looking for confirmation that the bios/mobo readings are... Read more

My keyboard will at seemingly random intervals start pushing my W, A, S, D, Q, & G buttons on its own, as well as clicking my mouse sporadically on its own (Only the buttons which are often pressed while playing first person shooter games). At first this would happen only when playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive via Steam (And it happened often during this time), however it's now happening when I'm surfing the internet, playing other games, and even when I'm just sitting at my desktop. It can be quite frustrating when trying to modify Microsoft Word documents..I've downloaded multiple different anti-malware and 'anti-keylogging' programs since I noticed it happening (after checking their credibility of course), looked at a couple different anti-virus programs (Though ultimately stayed with AVG), and have done long hours worth of scanning and cleaning, only to find myself in the same spot I started. At first I just assumed it was a regular old key-logger of some sort I got from a bad download or something because it would press the buttons in exactly the same manner in which I press them in-game; but I'm not really sure anymore because through all of this time trying to get rid of it, it still only spams my W, A, S, D, Q & G keys as well as my mouse, rather than recording any of my conversations or other key-strokes on the various websites that I visit. Someone also suggested that there was the possibility that someone else was getting to my computer via my net... I am trying to put a logon desktop jpg (want to avoid bmp, too big) in XP but it won't show. I am using these registry keys:

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]

If I use a bmp it works fine, but I really want to avoid that if I can. Is there maybe another flag I need to enable for this to work? Think it's something to do with active desktop or something, but can't seem to find a reference to that. And yes the file exists in that location.

I want to avoid 3rd party apps as this is to be part of a logon script. If it really can't be done with jpg then I'll stick to bmp but I want to use this as last resort.

Answer:pushing .jpg background through registry

Active Desktop needs to be enabled to use JPG as wallpapers. Honestly, though -- I'd just use the BMP files because it has to decompress it to display it anyway, so you're not really going to save much when it comes to system resources.

I am wanting to install a couple of programs onto each computer within our network. I was wondering if there was a way to do this without going to each individual computer and installing the software manually?

Answer:Pushing an install through network

there is a way to do that via group policy on a win 2000 or 2003 server environment. Its a lengthy chapter in my MCSE book though. try googleing software deployment with group policy.

Answer:Red lines under text without pushing or asking for them

If yes, it is Spell Check telling you the word is misspelled.
It will also happen if you type 2 words without a space in between.

why has microsoft pulled apps like glance background, tetra lockscreen, lumia storage check, my nokia, my lumia and other great apps from store... i did hard reset and now can't install them again, and other good apps, like gift voucher, sophielens for nokia, ...

Answer:Why is Microsoft pushing customers away?

Glance appears to be due for a re-invention of sorts with Windows 10 Mobile. Tetra Lockscreen was just a demonstration app that suffered from crashes and wasn't stable enough to be released properly. Nokia Storage check is now obsolete (gives misleading figures) and has been replaced by Storage Check.
Sophielens isn't a Microsoft app, so you'll need to ask the developer. I'm not sure you can term this as "pushing away customers". Life moves on, old apps get discontinued, new ones replace the old...

Ok, this might be a weird question or whatever, but I need to optimize my screen space, for that I want to be able to do this one thing, but I don't know if it's possible or needs a special program.
What I want to be able to achieve is this, when you right click on the top bar of any window, you have the option to restore, move, size, minimize, maximize, etc...
When you click 'move', you can use ur mouse arrows to move up, down, left, right. If you press 'up', you can press it high enough so that have the screen disappeared 'up', but when you press enter to leave it that way, it comes back down.
But is there a way to keep half or more of that entire window 'up'?

Hope my question was clear!

Answer:Pushing windows above the top in Vista??

How about moving it to the right, left or down off the screen as a work around.
Why cant you leave it minimized on the taskbar?

Sounds like it is time for dual monitors.

Answer:Is 70 c too hight or pushing it for a motherboard and CPU?

I would say not, that's to hot for it to be, especially at idle , my opinion ,its a year old have you cleaned the air vent yet with a can of compressed air , ,or even better opened it on clean the dust off the heatsinc, most laptops re dusty inside after a year ,even a light coating of dust will cause it to over heat.

I just checked my desktop cpu temp with

Hi there!I know you can only make something do or go as far or as fast as it can. I cant afford to run broadband or higher. Anyway im fed up of my Conexant V90 56K Modem. It is slow and i feel it isnt reaching its full potential (if it has any!). Anyway can anyway honestly say if it can be optimized for a higher performance. There are tools such as Ashampoo! There is NO way of increasing your connection speed to a noticeable degree. You could try asking BT to check the gain on your line but that is all. The so-called speed up programmes are as much use a snow at harvest.G

After building a machine, I want to be able to power it up, boot from the network, and have all the software (OS, drivers, apps), pushed down to the machine. Basically, I want to eliminate the two-hour process of installing Windows, updating, installing apps, finding drivers.

What is needed to do this? A dedicated server to do the pushing seems logical, no?

All this is in Microsoft Windows: 2000 on the servers and XP Pro on the workstations.

Answer:Pushing software to a new machine?

Norton Ghost will do imaging over TCP/IP networks. Good stuff. Just make your image with everything in there...and then push can use WOL as well to turn the computer on, etc.

Or you could use Windows Server's built in RIS to do something similar.

I have done everything to try and keep this video card cooler, cleaned the fan, applied new thermal compound and I also opened the back off a PCI slot that isn't being used. It idles at 46 degrees and when it's under load it's around 60 degrees. I can't play a single game for over an hour without it giving me "no dvi input" and forces me to restart my whole pc. I have no idea what this graphics card problem is. It's a PNY 9600gt. Please someone enlighten me what i'm doing wrong or is the card garbage?

Answer:Video card really pushing my buttons

You could buy an aftermarket GPU cooler although I'm not sure if it would be worth it. If it is out of warranty, I would consider just buying another card.

I was wondering if anybody else has ever had this issue before: Starting a few days ago, as soon as my laptop was booted my CD drive keeps popping out as if I am pushing the eject button. I push it back in and then it comes out immediately. Eventually it will stop but then it starts up again. I thought it was mechanical at first because I tested it while I opened and closed my laptop and it would open, however, sometimes without it being touched or moved it will open.  Any ideas? Possible solutions?Thank you!!!

Just want to check in to see what type of policies some of you are using at work for pushing out windows updates and other drivers and systems updates to workstations / servers?

Do you do it bi-monthly, do you follow MS release cycle?

What is you're testing environment like if you have one?

How do you decided if an update gets pushed out or not?

Are there any good resources / sites out there that track problems with the last MS updates and other releases?

Answer:What is your policy for pushing out updates on your networks?

We push out updates once or twice a month using WSUS and we also push the latest Flash/Java/Adobe Reader via GPO then too.

Drivers are automatically installed during the imaging process and aren't updated unless they need to be. BIOS updates are done after imaging to whatever the latest BIOS is at that time. We use WDS to image workstations.

For testing, we have seperate OUs and GPOs to test updates.

When i go to gpedit.msc it shows as policies predefined but they are not doing anything, one policy is do not require ctrl alt del at logon, and it shows as being configured but i still have to push ctrl alt del at logon, this was not an issue before sp2, also i have it delete my cached profile at logoff but it doesn't delete it it just makes renamed copies of each.

if anyone knows anything i can check to see wtf's going on.

I've been moving over some large files ( >1 GB each usually) by pushing them from my desktop to the HTPC over the network, both of which are wired. Occasionally, when copying a block of said files, it will just give me an error partway through. Can't remember the specific error right now, but something along the lines of can't see or access the folder, and retrying just instantly pops the error right back like it never actually retries. And yet I can navigate to the folder and see it's contents just fine. Doesn't seem to ever happen when moving a few at a time here and there, only with larger quantities. This never happens if I go to the HTPC and pull from there, but that's not always possible due to being in use and whatnot.

Maybe I should just look into a program that can automatically moving files in certain folders over without my intervention?

Answer:Win 7 & problems pushing large files over LAN

On two separate systems (so far) today, Panda Cloud Free Antivirus has automatically pushed its 2016 update (to version 16.0.2, from the 15.0.4 that I was still happily using).
I was hoping to keep the 2015 version around as long as possible, due to allegations that 2016 has a problem with restoring files from quarantine to the proper/original folders from which they came.   Now that the update has been pushed out, we'll see what happens.

On a Windows 2000 Server environment, I created a new (trusting) Domain A and (trusted Domain B) to it. There exists a Group Policy (Users and Computers) on both Domains A and B. The problem is, If a user of Domain A logs onto the Windows XP stations which are members of Domain A, the Group policy that I created for Domain A users and computers gets executed BUT when a user of Domain B authenticates to Domain B via trusting Domain A, he neither gets Domain A nor Domain B Group policy loaded though the login is sucessful and all the logon scripts/user profiles etc. are working fine. I manually added Domain B users to Security settings of GP on Dom A with apply group policy settings marked, still..of no avail. Authenticated users are already part of GPO. I even tried totally disabling Group Policy on Domain a but still for users of Dom B, the policy settings won't flow this side of the trusting domain.

Would anyone give me a clue??

Hey guys,

Running into an interesting problem and my partner and I can not figure out exactly what is the issue.

We are capturing an Image from a Lenovo machine and then pushing back to the same machine for testing. Everything works fine except for the fact that the OS seems to be getting stuck trying to pick the Timezome during one of the restarts.

I am looking for really any suggestions of something we may have over looked in settings or answer files etc. We have it set to pick Eastern Standard but seems to just not want to pick it.

I should note that if we pick the Timezone manually the rest of the Image works completely fine and joins the domain how we want it to. It simply a problem of getting this pass unstuck.

Thanks so much for the help, any suggestions would be helpful, If you need more information please ask!

When Microsoft made its major push in the marketplace to get everyone to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, I declined. I didn't want it. I'd seen a few people run into problems. I do not want to destabilize my system. Everything was running fine.

But Microsoft was relentless. About 3 different "recommended" updates were deployed as part of the software push to get users to upgrade. You had to figure out which ones were part of the "Windows 10 subversive install", uninstall them, then when Windows wanted to give them to you again, you'd have to hide the updates.

I went through all of that. TWICE. Yes, twice, because somewhere along the lines Microsoft figured out what people were doing and pulled them out of hiding. I had to do it again.

Well... surprise, surprise, surprise... those updates are not back, but now I'm seeing "Upgrade to Windows 10" AGAIN!!!

I'm going out of my mind. I DO NOT WANT WINDOWS 10! They have 13 FAQ entries, NONE of them say "What if I don't want Windows 10"? This is completely UNACCEPTABLE. Microsoft is being asinine about this Windows 10 upgrade push.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this new upgrade push? What are the update installs that are in the system forcing this again? Please... please post if you do. Thank you.

First of all, I hope this is the right place to post a question of this type - I found this forum by searching for an answer to this issue and found someone doing something related to this but not quite the same.

I have a setup of 4 "kiosk" machines which I'd like to push a fresh Ghost image to on a nightly basis. It was my understanding that using Ghost (Solution Suite 2.5), I can create a Ghost image of one system (which I've done) and then push that image out to all of my systems every night without having to boot them off a floppy, CD, thumb drive, etc. However every time I try to push an image out I get an error saying that I'm missing drivers in the Pre-OS for a couple of my devices, including my SATA controller. Every attempt to search for an answer this refers to boot-from-CD setups like BartPE.

What am I missing? Can someone direct me to a guide or something that can point me in the right direction of how to do this?

FYI, the "kiosk" machines are all Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Ghost - Pushing image files

Hi avallach

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you (nor do I to use Ghost) but you might also try posting in the Symantec User Forums here. (And maybe someone else on TechSpot might know about your question)

Hi everyone.

New to posting on these forums.

I'm an IT professional, one of my friends is having an issue that so far I have not been able to solve.

Every time he presses his ctrl key on his keyboard, his monitor will flicker instantaneously with the keystroke. I have had him remove his keyboard, and using the onscreen keyboard, the same exact issue happens.

This makes me think it must be something software related, but I don't know what... if his registry is somehow corrupt, issue with graphics drivers, some sort of software.

Right now I am reinstalling his graphics drivers to see if these resolves anything.

Also, I'll add this is a brand new computer that I had built and shipped to him. He says its happened ever since he's got it, the past few weeks.

Any sorts of ideas would be great. Thank you

Answer:Monitor flickers when pushing ctrl key

Forgot to add, this only happens when he is in a game application.

I just reinstalled his drivers remotely and it looks like it has resolved the issue.

Long story try to be short. I've had cable internet past 13 yrs. We're moving into a rural area and only decent option I know of is local WISP(microwave wireless internet) with speeds of 5mb/1mb. Not as good as cable but enough to surf net, light game, and stream Netflix I'm told. No DSL in area. Only other options I know of would be Satellite or 3g/4g both of which are capped and have issues in the area with connection and speeds.

So the WISP sounded like the best alternative. Booked install appt. Guy arrived and said no go, too many trees and wouldn't get a line of site to tower.

Here is my ?. What are my options now. Build a tower to get above trees to get LOS with tower? Is there some secret way to get a telcom to sell me something that would be decent? I've read articles about rural communities creating co-ops and having good internet. However, these articles lack any true detail about how to get this started, setup etc...?? The neighbors I've talked with are not power users and make due with 3g cards, but would be interested I'm sure if we could create some option. I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel here. Maybe a local tower to get the WISP in our LOS???? The WISP doesn't really seem interested in helping, but I'm guessing if we suddenly had LOS they'd be happy to take our money every month.

I'm just so exasperated as it's 2013 and not the back hills of Appalachia we'r... Read more

Answer:Help ASAP plz. If wrong forum apologies... Rural area internet issues

Go the tower route if you have the option for that connection, and you just need LOS.

First figure out how tall it needs to be, then figure out your location, and then talk to the local Gov to figure out if you can have that tall of a tower.

Me, I've dealt with 3G for 5 years, and have a T1 coming any damn day now.
Checkout my threads in this forum for more info about my 3G and T1 setups.
