esata external hard drive througn 2nd hard drive caddy

Question: esata external hard drive througn 2nd hard drive caddy

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

hi peeps

im looking for an external 2.5 HD caddy. I was looking for a Western Digital caddy, however, cannot find any on the net. Was wondering if somebody could point me in the correct direction to obtain one. Or a extact replica

thanks in advance

Answer:2.5 External Hard Drive Caddy

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

Hi, I want to by a ext hard drive but when I was looking throygh the comments they mentioned eSATA, not sure what this means? and they said about this particular ext drive I am interested in, that I would have to format the FAT, but the prob being is that I have NTFS and do not know how to format this FAT as I live in France and I will not quite understand the french explanation even though I speak french, it will be the terminology I will have probs with. I do not understand a lot of the terminology in english concerning the PC so what chance do I have in french?!!!! thanks for any help in the simplest form.

Esata is sata connection but external so you have to have the provision for esata on your computer or buy a pci card such as click here

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

Hi,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Thanks

I have a Fantom Green Drive II, 1TB eSATA/USB as one of my back up drives. I purchased a SATA to eSATA plug for the back of the computer but the drive is not recognized when I connect it up with the eSATA cable. Once I pluged in the USB cable it was regognized and working. Is there something I have to do for it to be working as eSATA, the bus speed is 1500Mbits/sec vs 480Mbits/sec for USB.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Recognized in eSATA

Sometimes the eSATA port has to be enabled in BIOS. And some eSATA ports require that the drive be attached and powered on when booting the system. This is particularly true if you aren't running your hard drives in AHCI mode.

I have an Apricorn EZ bus DTS 500 gigabyte external hard drive usb 2.0/ e Sata combo and bare in mind that I am not tech savy.

Okay, I've just installed the connection and everything is working fine but I don't understand why but when I check its properties it only has 465 gigabytes. Where did the other 35 gigabytes go? What's going on?

My next question is how to safely disconnect an e Sata connection from my computer. Can I just turn off my external hard drive while Winodws is running or do I need to reboot my computer and uncheck the bios setting for external hard drive every single time? Any step by step instruction would help me. I want to safely remove my external hard drive without any data loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Vantec NexStar 3 that has both a USB and an eSATA connection, and the USB connection works just fine. However, the computer does not recognize that I have connected the drive when I use only the eSATA connecting cable, and when I have the eSATA cable AND the USB cable in at the same time, the computer cannot see the hard drive either...but, with both connected, if I unplug the eSATA connection, leaving the USB connection in, the computer instantly recognizes the drive. What gives?

Answer:ESATA external hard drive issues

Is this a external that you made yourself? Because I believe that the hard drive itself has to be sata to be able to use the esata. If it is IDE then it won't work.

Hi,

I have a Laptop running Win98 1st. Ed. It's on it's 2nd hard drive. The first was a IBM Travelstar (model# DKLA-24320). It was replaced when the Stone Monkey Virus made it impossible to access the dirve.

Now I am looking for what I think is called an external hard drive caddy or enclosure. I would like to place the old hard drive in the external caddy or enclosure. The caddy or enclosure would have to be either Parallel, USB or PCMICA adaptable. I am hoping to then be able to access the old hard drive that way.

Is there such a Caddy or enclosure, does it go by any other name? If there is such a device please tell me the proper name and where I can find them.

I'd also like to know whether, this sounds like a possible way to access an old laptop hard drive?

Thanks

Answer:laptop Hard Drive External Caddy or Enclosure

You can pick up USB external disk cases for peanuts for 2.5" disks. I use them for traveling storage. Here's one typical example: http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY-2.5case&dept_id=04-005

Note that you may need a cheap +5V adapter to use this case, you can buy them in the $20 range with the supply included. www.pricewatch.com is your friend.

Alright, so I have an 1TB Toshiba External Hard Drive and it has the option for either USB or eSATA. I had it attached by USB up til now cuz I didn't have an eSATA cable or port. Today, I went to MicroCenter and got an eSATA to eSATA cable and a port thing that has two eSATA females and two SATA males that go into my SATA ports in my motherboard. I put the two SATA ports in my motherboard, screwed in the two eSATA ports in my case, closed the case, plugged in the eSATA cable to my computer then to my External HDD, turned my computer on, and it doesn't even detect it. Can someone help me out here, please?

My motherboard is ASRock m3a770de. I built my machine 3 days ago. I have one Hiatchi 500gb internal HD, and one 1TB external HD.

I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition.

After building my computer three days ago, I installed windows, and my external was not being detected through eSATA in the BIOS or in Windows "Probably need to install drivers" I said.

So I put in the CD that came with my motherboard, and installed the AMD All in One Driver that was on it. Restarted, and hey, my external was showing up.

Today, after installing SP1 (not sure if thats what did it), my ext hd was no longer showing up again. I reinstalled the driver on that CD. Now, I'm not sure if it even installed the first time, because it said it was currently uninstalled through the ATI catalyst installation program. But it didn't work this time. I'm not sure what got it to work the first time. But my eSATA drive was being read in IDE mode for three days. When trying to get it work the first time, I did plug it in via USB to see if it would work, maybe that had something to do with it working the first time?

Anyway, I changed my registry to start up in AHCI mode, and then went into my bios and changed my storage config to AHCI. Upon booting, windows would not load with my external HD turned on (anybody know why?), but loaded once I turned it off. Windows then installed AHCI drivers, and upon restarting, both hard drive, external and internal, were being detected as removal ... Read more

Second attempt at trying to explain

External Hard Drive: ----> eSata ----> Gaming Laptop.
External Hard Drive: ---> Ethernet---> Router ---> Ethernet--->Xbox 360.
External Hard Drive: ---> Ethernet---> Router ---> Ethernet---> PC
External Hard Drive: ---> Ethernet---> Router ---> Wireless---> Laptop (Aunt's)
First attempt at trying to explain.

I want my laptop to be my gaming system.
I want to store the games on an external Hard Drive.
I need the connection to be eSata for Random Access Speeds.

I also want my external hard drive to store films/music/pictures etc...
I also want other computers on the home group to be able to access this, Ethernet or wireless. (Ethernet to router, then wireless)

What type of hard drive am i looking for?
What sort of price range will it be for a 1TB?
My laptop has much better gaming specs than my PC will ever have.

I want the laptop to access the hard drive through eSata but when the laptop is not turned on, the attention from the hard drive is pushed towards the other side of the network.
How do i do it?
How much will such hardware cost?
Is it possible?
Is it difficult to setup?
I heard that if the Hard Drive has eSata, it WON'T have any pc software to allow Ethernet compatibility on it's own, therefor my laptop must be turned on at all times? (is there a way to get round this problem?)

Hiya,

I have a 2tb external hard drive (western digital in a star tech enclosure). When I connect it to my laptops built in eSATA port (HP DV7 4050EA) via the eSATA cable, nothing happens. The hard drive does not even appear in computer management/disk management/device manager.
The power supply to the hard drive works fine.

It does however work using the USB connection on the enclosure to a standard USB port on the laptop, just at USB 2.0 speeds rather than eSATA.

Does anyone have any idea on how I can get the hard drive working on the eSATA port?

Thanks

Answer:Laptop Won't Identify eSATA external hard drive

check that the drive, the enclosure and the eSATA port are all the same version (ex)
check BIOS settings and make sure the On Board device configuration is not set to RAID

Hello,

I recently bought the GXT Digital pro Esata II external hard drive but don't know how to connect my hard drive from my Hp laptop. I am not sure if the connections are the same because I can't find anywhere to connect them. The guy at the store said it would be easy but I am finding it anything but that.

I have also read about a switch on the hard drive that changes it to master, I unfortunately don't see any switches on my hard drive and was wondering if that applies to me.

If anyone can let me know if I have bought the right enclosure and how I can use it that would be very much appreciated. I have attached a picture of my hard drive and the enclosure. Thanks!

Hi everyone I have another problem A couple of months back I bought a External IDE hard drive caddy which is called Hi Point smart mobile storage. But about 4-6 hours later I tried again and then it says it cannot load the driver software. IF this is any help as well there is a blue and red light on the caddy blue for power and red for hard disk activity the red light is always on it will not go off. Hey. Do you know if there is any way (without disk cloning tweaks) to install OS to external hard drive in Thinkpad SL 510? I tried it first with eSata. I have USB/eSata dock (Deltaco). The disk is visible in Win7 partitioning utility but it says "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 1 Partition 1". Then I used USB cable and same error, although the error details were different. For eSata it complained something like check from BIOS that the disk is bootable. The BIOS doesn't even show the disk when it is connected through eSata, although windows partitioning utility shows it. The BIOS does recognize the hard disk when it is connected through USB, but the installer just says that installation to USB disk is not possible. The external disk works fine with both cables when you boot from laptops internal hard disk.  For me it seems that Lenovo SL 510 does not support booting from eSata and Win7 does not support installing to USB. 1. Is there about to come support for eSata booting for this Laptop?   I just installed fresh BIOS flash update (I think it was 9/2010) and the problem exists. 2. Is there some way to install Win7 to the USB hard drive? Thanks.

Answer:E525 internal hard drive not detected by BIOS when eSATA drive attached

It appears that this has something to do with the hard drive ordering. When the machine is switched on with the eSATA drive attached, eSATA becomes SATA HDD0 (presumably the internal drive becomes SATA HDD1).The only option to boot from SATA drives on the boot order menu in the BIOS is SATA HDD0, so it never tries to boot from HDD1 (now the internal drive).I can see this is useful if you WANT to boot from the eSATA, but I don't........

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

I see it can be done from an installed to an external, but can it be done in reverse, taking the external cased hard drive and cloning it to an internal? The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I am running windows 8.1 pro

Answer:installation software from external hard drive or internal hard drive

Your method is as good as any. If it works, keep doing it.

Hi, recently my lenovo T61's video card fizzled out right after the warranty expired. I have information on the laptop's hard drive that i need to get off of it. I have a hard drive enclosure for my old hp laptop's hard drive but the two drive have different connectors. Answer:Need help finding correct external hard drive enclosure for a T61 hard drive

There is a lot to choose from. Any USB SATA external hard drive enclosure should work. Since i don't live in the US i don't know where the best place to buy such a enclosure would be in your case. If you cannot find any maybe someone else that live in the US could help you out.

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

Ok so basically i see dvd drives that replace the optical drive and allow you to put a 2nd hard drive on things like laptops.

The issue is i want one for a desktop as the ones i am finding are too small to fit in one of my desktops. Normally there is more than 1 expansion slot for an additional hard drive on MOST desktops but this isn't the case for mine as i am using a sff model and well the only way to add another hard drive is to take off my optical drive and swap it with some sort of expasion.

Anyone know where to buy one of these for a desktop optical drive as the ones for laptops are smaller

Very confused about what the recommended HDD Caddy for T430 is. (to swap DVD drive with a 2nd HDD)Also, is there a non Lenovo HDD that works with this? 1 TB drive preferred.Thanks.

Answer:Hard Drive Bay (Caddy) and drive for T430

Ultrabay caddies come in two thicknesses, 12.7mm for T430 and T530 (0A65623), and 9.5mm for T430s (43N3412.)

You can buy these from Lenovo or you can get "clone" caddies quite inexpensively on eBay, e.g. 9.5mm Bezel SATA 2nd HDD Hard Drive caddy bay for T400s T500 T410s X200 is $10 for a 9.5mm unit. This is what I have in my T430s. A 9.5mm caddie will fit into your T430 but will leave a small gap at the top. You can search to see what 12.7mm caddies are available.

I haven't tested the clone caddies with HDDs larger than 500GB. There's no reason they won't work. Note that the HDD must be no thicker than the caddy in order to fit physically. Since you have a T430 with 12.7 Ultrabay opening this shouldn't be an issue for you either.

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Hi, my 10yr old pc (xp with sp3) became so frustrating slow that i decided to replace it in July with a Windows7 system that has a 120Gb SSD +1Tb hdd and 16gb memory. There is stuff on the old pc's hard drive that i'd like to use so, is it possible to remove it and put it in a caddy and connect it to my new pc using a usb cable? If yes, is it straightforward or am i dreaming?? Thanks for any info. - Tony

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

Hi, The  HP p6-2004it is only provisioned for one (1) hard drive bay.  If you are handy using sheet metal, you might be able to fabicate some brackets such as these. Dual 3.5" HD stacking bracket.  These brackets may or may not work in your cabinet.       Thanks for posting on the forum.

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

I currently am running windows 8.1 x64 bit, and I am thinking of copying my entire hard drive (consisting of C & D drives using a total of 929.2 GB of space.  And wanting to get a Western Digital External Hard Drive with 1.5 TB of space.  I have been led to believe that windows 8.1 has a utility called System Image Back Up Utility (located in the Control Panel).  I have also been led to believe that this can be done completely using a bit by bit copy of the entire hard drive (programs, files, drivers, apps, utilities, etc),  But I can not fine enough info on doing this. And there are still questions, such as How do you transfer the copy from the external hard drive back onto the PC if it should completely crash? (I do have a five disk recovery set I made when I purchased my PC, but still want an additional source of a back up system.)  I can not find the procedures for copying the copy from the external hard drive to the crashed PC, and are ther better and safer programs out there to use instead of the windows system Image back up utility?  I would add that I am somewhat of an intermediate user, useing PCs since windows 95. but there are obviously issues that I need to research before attempting something this complicated and advanced.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in Advance !

A description of System Image Backup can be found here.  If you want both C and D, I would suggest a clone program. Both Seagate and WD offer a free Disk Wizard Program. With the cloning process, you use an external case to perform the clone.  When disaster strikes, you swap out the drives, and continue. Personally, I make clones of my primary desktops every 30-45 days.

Windows 7 desk top computer stopped during use. It would not restart when button pressed. External power supply ok. Possible internal Power Supply Unit failure. Can the pc hard drive data be backed up to an external USB hard drive enclosure before testing to find the fault in these circumstances?

Answer:Hard drive backup to external USB hard drive enclosure

Yes, most HDD is use on laptop and desktops units are pretty standard. The desktops use 3.5 inch internal drives and the laptops are mostlt 2.5 inch. The Sata interface is almost universal. Suitable enclosures are sold by major vendors. Be aware that the very lost cost kits are not real enclosure, just the power and interface components. Not recommended. To easy make a mistake. You will need a working PC or laptop to read the data. And enough free drive space to store your data files. Recovering program files is not piratical, unless the programs were  portable programs. Which is not likely. This video is basic and helpful. (Ignore the lead in advertisement.)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLLQusrmzvIAs you will see in then video, you can buy an enclosure for  any starred hard drive. So just pick out a good enclosure and you can get you data back!EDIT: On of the best tutorials I have seen lately.  He makes it plain and simple and very useful information.  Geek-9pm recommends you watch. Hi, for nearly a year now I've been using a Buffalo 500GB external hard drive.
Just yesterday though, after unplugging it from my PC, using it on another Windows 7 machine and then attempting to reconnect it the my PC, it began to show up on My Computer as a Local Disk rather than an external. In addition, when I try to access it, it gives me this message: E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. My question is, is there any way to return the drive to it's original state or recover the data inside? The data is of extreme importance.

I am unsure about what happens after you convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive... Let's say the internal HDD was your only laptop HDD and you replaced it with a SSD. If you convert your old internal HDD to an external HDD, what would happen when you open it up on your newly installed OS (on the SSD)?

I am trying to download a new OS but us my old internal HDD as an external drive just to access specific files. However, I don't want any other data/programs/settings/etc. downloaded onto my new SSD. Do I need to delete my old OS when I convert my old internal HDD into an external HDD or does the OS simply get "reduced" to a bunch of files that I will see on my newly installed OS?

If anyone is able to clarify these questions that would be fantastic!

Hi guys,

I'm new on any sort of forums so go easy if it's a stupid question..but here goes.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching).

To cut a long story short - I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.

When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.

Does anyone know how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive

This is the way it works. I have an 80GB SSD and an internal HDD and the same happens if the file/folder is large enough. If you just copy a few MBs, you will not see the window with the green stripe running. But if e.g. you copy 500MBs, you will see it. It physically moves the data. That is different if you copy on the same volume from one folder to another. Then it only makes an entry in the MFT.

I earlier posted about the Aspire AST690-UP925A having 250GB hard drive. I since then contacted Aspire chat support. Apparently, not being tech savy we didn't realize 250 gb hard drive only 112 c drive is able to be used, the d data drive holds the programs to run the computer.

I didn't mean can I use the external hard drive internally. I meant, if I hook it up externally would it work in place of the internal hard drive that is nearly full except for around 10 GB?

So, unfortunately the computer isn't as big as you believe. But...I wanted to know if I purchase (I was looking at western digital elements 2TB external hard drive). Can we use it for this computer. It will not run itunes or anything like that, but we can obviously go online.

My brother wants to buy a new computer, but I know that is probably not the way to go. Should we get an internal hard drive installed and other memory or something or can we use the external hard drive?

I would appreciate any informed help on this since we do not no technical info on computers. Can't really afford to buy another computer right now.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

I find hard drive terminology a bit confusing. All these SATA and PATA acronyms...!I have an external HDD in a USB caddy, for backing up. However, it's a bit small, and I want to fit a new, larger capacity one.The data connection to the HDD within the caddy is the good old grey multi-strand ribbon cable that's been used within PC's for yonks. Am I right in thinking that, so long as the drive I buy is specified as "IDE", then that's the type of data connection it will have? While I'm at it, does anyone have recommendations for a good deal on a drive - about 200GB?Thanks for any advice.

I want to use another 2 or 3 hard drives for back up and that would save me the cost of a number of caddies?

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

Hi all,I have in the past had a pretty severe PC fiddling habit!I have therefore piles of kit that are last generation at the best, all serviceable but not in best nick or any semblance of order.I am minded just to have a great big sell up, stick it all in once box and sell it all for about a 100th of what it all cost in it's day.I have relocated, have no space and no time for toys so it makes some sense. However I will hold on to Hard drives from the ages as I do not want and old data floating around in strangers hands. So, to the question, any recommendations for a desk top caddy I can drop an old ide drive into and salvage anything I want before taking a sledge hammer to the drive?Looking for quality and reliability, have had Chinese versions that haven't lasted the course and will expect a USB interface at the PC end! Thanks for help in advance, Brgds, Epirb.

I have a hard drive taken from a PC that died on me (motherboard failure)
I put it in a caddy and connected to my new Pc and tried to format it. When trying to format it the Drive letter came up as "C" which it was on the old PC, my new Pc has the same drive letter and I was afraid I would damage my new Pc so I cancelled the formatting.
I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.
Jack

Answer:Replace hard drive in caddy

Can you post an image of the connection. Some HP and Dells have a plastic plastic adapter that attaches to the serial connections.

Edit: What is the make and model of the computer.

Hello,I aquired a "used" Sleekbook 14-b010us, and it was missing a lot of parts. Iv'e gotten it running again, but I am missing a hard drive caddy. I found a few on ebay and other part stores, but for other model numbers. Does anyone have a part number for a drive caddy for the 14-b010us so I can make sure the parts are compatible? Or, are they fairly universal for the Sleekbook 14-b series? Here's a few in question:http://www.notebookparts.com/hp-pavilion-14-14-b031us-hdd-hard-drive-caddy-fbu33013010/ http://www.ebay.com/itm/697905-001-DD0U33HD010-GENUINE-HP-HARD-DRIVE-CADDY-ENCLOSURE-14-SLEEKBOOK-14... On ebay they are like $5, so I may just buy it and hope for the best. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I have an Ideacentre Y700 Desktop and went to install an additional 3.5 inch hard drive but there was no caddy in the empty slot. I called Lenovo and was told they don't sell them. I've looked at a number of sites on the internet (Fry's, Amazon, Google Search) with no luck. Even called a few local computer stores, again with no luck. Any ideas as to where to go to get one would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I've just dumped a dead laptop but have kept the hard drive intending to use it as a spare external drive. However, i am having problems finding a caddy/enclosure to put it in. The laptop was a Packard Bell Easynote F7300. can anyone point me to a website where I might find a caddy to put the hard drive in. Thanks

Answer:Caddy for laptop hard drive

There are thousands og them around, emmandelo, but you haven't said if your hard drive is IDE or SATA. Yon can get enclosures that will take both types though. click here You could also search EBay.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

Picture of caddy and screws  I recently purchased a T30 without the HDD.  I bought a HDD and a Caddy - but am not sure how to put this Caddy on the HDD. I have one large screw and 4 HDD screws.

Answer:T30 HARD DRIVE COVER CADDY

It looks like the cage goes around the drive and attached with the 4 smaller screws. The large screw is used to hold in the plastic 'shield' and screws into the notebook case.

Hi Guys,    So Recently I purchased a ThinkPad T420 with 16 gb RAM and 240 gb SSD. I am Planning to swap the hard drive with a anopther HDD opr a ssd. I was wondering if someone can help me with suggestions. I know i ahve to buy a 12.7mm bay for hdd. But does the hard drive bay has to have a eject button ? with a SATA III hard drive bay work? I was looking at this one : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Notebook-12-7mm-SATA-CD-ROM-Optical-Drive-Bay-for-2nd-HDD-Hard-Drive-Cadd...Will this work? Also should I get a normal rotational HDD for the 2nd Hard drive or a ssd ? Cheers

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

Answer:T520 : hard drive caddy

I also purchased the drive caddy for my T520 and had the same questions and comments you had. I think Lenovo expects that you purchase the HD from them with the caddy on it.

I've recently began having problems with a SATA - USB caddy to my Laptop. The caddy in question is one of these:

Page Not Responding

Sometimes I get "Delayed Write Errors" (in XP), other times the blue light will just go off and any activity will be stopped without any warning - when I take the USB cable out, the light comes back on and the caddy works again. I've asked the seller and he thinks its a problem with the HDD itself, with a possible "Bad Sector" - but I'm not convinced.

Any help?

Hi, I have two old hard drives from a couple of old pc's, roughly 5/6 years old. I would like to see what was on them but am really confused as to what caddy I need. I see on Amazon Sata, IDE, 2.5 ins 3.5 ins- really confused!! Any guidance would be appreciated, thanks

Answer:Hard drive caddy guidance please

They're probably 3.5" (measure the width which will actually measure about 4" if they're 3.5" drives) and most likely to be IDE, but check this. Which connection do they have on the back?

As far as I can tell from the Lenovo parts listings a caddy w/- the FRU 62P4553 *should* fit (though they cover themselves with the clause "some products may not be compatible") but it doesn't say whether I should be putting a SATA or a PATA drive in this caddy ... Can anyone help?

I am trying to use this PC to read a previous hard drive from another HP pavilion (purchased in September 2016 but now written off by my insurers as the screen got damaged and could not be replaced) vis a USB caddy. Using the current USB caddy I get a message that it needs to be USB 3.0 compatible and the drive will not read. I have checked with my local tech support and the drive is readable on their system. How can I resolve this as I need to access it, to retrieve a one off program which was not fully backed up before the laptop got damaged

Answer:Reading Old Hard drive via USB Caddy

So I gather it is a usb 2.0 caddy/adapter? Have you tried plugging it into a USB 2.0 port on another computer?

Hello, I purchased an ATA hard drive caddy for mt IBM t40 and I have been unable to have the hard drive recognice by windows XP. The unit turns on and lights come on on the caddy, but I can not see the drive when I go to my computer. I have tried several hard drives and also have changed the jumpers on the hard drive. Hope some one can help. The hard drives I am ussing come out of my old T43 and T41 that failed and they are Fujitsu hard drives 40 and 60 gigs. Thank you

Answer:Hard Drive Caddy ATA not able to install on my T40

Jumpers must be set to master when using IDE drives in a caddy.
Is the T40 detecting the caddy when plugged into the USB port?
Cab you see the drive in disk management?

I have a EL1333G-03w with an eSATA port but it will not show the hard drive on the screen.

Answer: connect a eSATA hard drive

Might wanna check if there is a BIOS setting or feature for enabling the esata port.

Hi all ill try describe my problem

I have a sata to esata adapter installed on my desktop but its not spinning up or working my hard drive. The hard drive has 3 ports

Usb to usb
Usb to dc power
Esata to esata

Over usb it works fine but when i use the esata and power cable the hard drive makes a constant ticking noise and isnt detected on windows. Ive double checked inside my motherboard that its plugged into my sata ll port not sata lll. It isnt detected at all by the computer even when i search for new hardware.

This used to work fine over esata on my laptop so it isnt hardware issue

Answer:ESATA hard drive not detected

Esata is tricky sometimes. If you shut down Windows then hook it up....it works I assume. Tell me if I'm wrong. I don't know why they can't get eSATA figured out.

You most likely need drivers for whatever controls your eSATA port. I have had machines that take a lot of work to get the eSATA to work right. You might need to go right to the maker of the chip on the motherboard to get a driver that will hot plug with the machine running.
