Wishing to upgrade hardrive of Think Pad 2530 - z60m, from 100MB to 300MB

Question: Wishing to upgrade hardrive of Think Pad 2530 - z60m, from 100MB to 300MB

I am trying to upgrade my computer to Vista Business, but I only have about 42MB left of hard drive capacity. Does anybody knows what the difference is between 300GB 5400 RPM Universal SATA - 8MB and 300GB 7200 RPM Universal SATA -16MB. I aqppreciate your advise, and thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Wishing to upgrade hardrive of Think Pad 2530 - z60m, from 100MB to 300MB

The difference is the speed and buffer, the latter drive being faster and having twice the buffer and it will perform a lot better than the first one. Please be advised that you have to stay with 32-bit Vista on your Z60m, 64-bit will not install on it. Hope this helps.

Does it really matter if a device has a 100mbps eth port when it is capable of 300mbps wifi N?

I mean wifi is half duplex anyways, so that means a real max cap of 150mbps realistic throughput overall and techincally wifi sucks ass anyways so you probably wont even come close to 300 will you?

Im not a big wifi junkie. I set it up all the time but never actually looked into cheaper devices with slower eth ports.

Answer:100mb port on 300mb wifi ?

you wont ever see 300mbps wifi speeds anyways or even 150.

now when you say 100mbps eth port you mean WAN or LAN...

if you connect via cables systems to the LAN ports, it will be faster than Wifi.

Hello all I have offered to upgrade the HDD in a used T60 purchased by a friend for their son, on my advice. The HDD is only 40GB and his sister has a 500GB HDD on her new laptop, imagine how he feels! I have been putting it off for a while because of the cost of drives from IBM, which I assumed had to be used. Reading that it is possible to upgrade using HDDs bought from elsewhere and seeing that the cost is less than half of those from IBM I decided I might as well upgrade my Z60m at the same time. Anyway, the point is that I'm worried about compatibility issues. I saw, in a thread, a link to the HDD firmware updates where there was a list of supported HDDs and found two Seagate drives in the list that I can purchase relatively cheaply. Before seeing the list I was going to buy a couple of Toshiba drives that were a bit cheaper than the Seagate ones. Am I being over cautious or is my thinking right that it's a 'safer' bet to buy the Seagate drives in the hope that they'll at least work out of the box even if the firmware updates might not. Are the Seagate drives as good as any other compatible ones? I see people are going for Hitachi drives but they're more expensive still. Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for you help.

Answer:Z60m / T60 HDD upgrade

As long as it's a laptop SATA drive, 9.5mm/2.5" format, it will work in your ThinkPad(s) with no issues whatsoever.
Have fun upgrading.

Question: Z60m SSD upgrade

I've got a failing HDD and am looking to put a small SSD (32-40gb) in. Does the Z60m support SATA II or do I have to find an older generation SSD?AFAIK SATA is backwards compatible but I'm concerned about the ability of the chipset/motherboard to handle the upgrade.

Answer:Z60m SSD upgrade

AFAIK SATA I SSD's don't exist. But every SATA drive is backwards compatible- even the new SATA III ones- with the older interfaces. They are just bottlenecked by how much data they can send through the line. You'll just be limited to 150 MB/s read and 150 MB/s write: so there's no harm in picking up one of the slower drives since they all should be able to go faster than that transfer speed anyways.

I've purchased my Lenovo Thinkpad (z60m 2529-E3u) with 1 GB RAM installed, 3+ years ago (3-year warranty expired). I'd like to upgrade to at least 2 GB. Could anyone please help with the following 2 questions: (1) How to open up/reach to the memory slot to find out if I have 2x512 KB or 1x1024 KB now? (2) If I then find out that both of the two memory slots are already used (2x512 KB), is there a 2 GB memory chip I can install in one of the slots, (ending up with 2.5 GB in toital)? Many thanks in advance and best regards from sunny Toronto, Grisha.

Answer:z60m (2525-E3U) Memory Upgrade

Welcome to the forum! Instructions on replacing the RAM can be found in HMM that can be downloaded from here: Given the low price of DDR2 RAM, I would suggest emptying out both slots if they're populated with 512Mb DIMMs, and installing 1x2Gb and 1x1Gb which is the maximum (3Gb) that the chipset in your machine can address. Hope this helps.

Is it possible, and/or worthwhile, to upgrade the system board on a Z60m?

Answer:Z60m system board upgrade

yes you can use the system board of the Z61m in your Z60m, so that you can use Core Duo or Core 2 Duo Merom Socket M processors, it is worthwhile if you can obtain a cheap board from somewhere and that you are reasonably skilled in doing this sort of stuff. The above link provides you with an example of what people have done in regards to Z60m to Z61m motherboard replacement, and some useful pointers that will smooth the transition if you do decide to take that path. <-- this is the hardware manual that shows you how to remove the motherboard and other parts of thinkpad for the Z60m, the manual for the Z61m is very similar.

Hello all I intend to upgrade the hard drive in my z60m, to a Seagate momentus 7200.4, essentially because it's in the latest firmware update list I could find. I have created the ISO disk for checking for HDD firmware updates and checked on my current drive that it works. I intend to install windows on the new hard drive using the restore disks, after which I will manually install updates for all the drivers and also all the files I use routinely. My question is at what point should I use the ISO HDD firmware update programme. I'm not buying my HDD from IBM and understand that the firmware update might not work, but at what point should I try. I was thinking to install the new hard drive and then run the firmware update software before installing the OS from the restore disks. Is this right or should I run the HDD firmare update after I've installed the factory image onto the new hard drive? Thank you.

Answer:Z60m Hard drive upgrade

Welcome to the forum!
Firmware update is really not that much of a big deal, you can do it from a bootable CD before you install the OS, or at any time after you've installed it. It really won't make much of a difference either way.
Good luck.

Hi,Newbie here. And kinda of an untechnical type. I physically inspected my 1GB of memory. The part number (or description, not sure) I saw was 1GB 2RX8 PC-4200S-444 and a fru of 73P3845. Oh, the os is Windows XP. I want to double the memory. 1. Can I double the memory to 2GB?2. Assuming the answer is yes, do I have to replace the entire module, as the 2RX8 leads me to believe the existing 1GB is comprised of 8x128 dimms. I did not see any other memory slots.3. Will faster memory (DS5300?) work in conjunction with the existing memory (4200), or as a complete replacement?

Hi to all I have a thinkpad z60m that I bought for a very low price. When I bought the laptop, it was configured with 1.73GHz PM processor, 256mb RAM, and 40gb hard drive. I already upgraded the memory to 2gb to speed it up and it works well but I'm now running out of space, and I want to upgrade the hard drive. Does anyone know the maximum capacity that this laptop can handle? It says in the manual that it can handle a 100gb hard drive max. But I came across this website offering a 160gb 7200rpm hard drive that's supposed to work with thinkpad t60, z60m, and z60t. Can I go higher than 100gb for the primary hard drive? Has anyone here tried to install a primary hard drive bigger than 100gb to a z60m? Does it work? I know I have a lot of questions, but I hope someone could help me. Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:Thinkpad z60m hard drive upgrade

Welcome to the forum! You can install a HDD bigger than 100Gb in your machine, no problem. The reason why you're seeing a 100Gb limit in release documents is the fact that it had been the largest HDD available at the time... Hope this helps.

My network at home is wireless g and I wish to upgrade to Wireless N, but I was told that my Z60m will not be able to read the N signal and I will still be receiving a g signal unless I buy an adapter for my computer so it may read the N signal. Can anyone tell me more about it??? Thank you

Answer:I want to Upgrade my Network to Wireless N, but my Z60m will require an adapter...

Welcome to the forum! There are no "N" cards available for Z60m units, you'll have to go with PCMCIA or USB wireless card. "N" cards available for newer ThinkPads (T6x, X6x, R6x) would not work in a Z60m, and any non-Lenovo internal card would cause a BIOS error that would prevent your ThinkPad from booting. Hope this helps.

I am working with a client who has a Kyocera KM-2530 and wants to use it to scan to PCs on their network. They bought it from . Has anyone set up one of these office all in ones for this? ive tried looking through documentation on it and searching google for setting this up but it has been unsuccessful so far... thanks for any help!!

Answer:Kyocera 2530 scanning to network pcs?

we have a Lanier 2135 (i belive) that does network scanning.

Basically, you set up the scanner/printer/copier/coffee maker/jukebox on the network.

Then install the management software on a computer that will never be turned off (server), then the software should be able to find the scanner via broadcast/responce, and establish the connection.

Then you should be able to assign a directory on the network where the management software will dump the processes scans.

If the software needs to be updated, does anyone know of a chart to compare which switch models are compatible with which version of update. Any information would be helpful.

Ii then checked device manager and it shows it as being there. The computer won't pick up my CD drive so i can't install my hardware, i need help please does anybody know what i can do.

It might sound obvious, but have you double checked the connections are really secure ?Don't overlook the obvious, make sure it is in the right way round too. It is difficult to get wrong but.......Also make sure the power connector (usually white with 4 pins) is live, easiest was is to swap it with one that you know works.

Hi everyone, I hope someone can advise please. I have a Thinkpad L460 which is has a warranty that runs until August 2019. Would I be aloud to upgrade it either myself or via Lenovo Service Partner without affecting my warranty?. I believe in my model there is a Western Digital HD installed and would be happy to swap it out for a WD SSD, although there does seem to be better out there as I would only need a 128gb SSD or thereabouts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it seems quite a straightforward process by buying the SSD with a cloning kit. Thanks in advance, scotty66

Hi Scotty66,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.
As I understand that you have query regarding upgarding yours L460 SSD from HDD.
I guess it will not void the warranty as its CRU parts unless you are not damaging the product/parts while replacing it.
And here's the partlist for L460 as well as HMM guide which can walk you through the replacement of the parts.
I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

I emailed Sony asking whether or not I could
1) upgrade to DDR-2 533MHz at a later date
2) whether installing a faster hardrive at a later date would be possible, and whether or not it would affect the warranty

Well, I found the answer to the first question on Tom's Hardware AND people correctly answered it in this forum as well (DDR memory is uses 184 pin while DDR-2 uses 240, so it wouldn't even fit, PLUS I'm sure they use different memory controllers).

Sony replied, affirming the memory issue, but they said that installing a different drive in a Sony Vaio notebook is not possible. The notebook I'm looking only offers a 4200RPM drive, which is way to slow, but the Sony screens are SO SO nice, its worth getting IF you can upgrade later.

Was Sony just saying that because they don't want Average Joe cracking open the laptop?

Surely you can replace it, unless they use some abnormal form factor and you can only get the drives from Sony or something?

Answer:Sony said I can't upgrade the hardrive?!?

You should be able to replace the drive, but laptop hard drives are slower...

Every time I try to print anything, my WF-2530 feeds a sheet through and reports paper out. The unit has seen little use and has never had a paper jam. I have carefully loaded only a few sheets of regular 20 lb paper and it does it every time. I have done the same with some Kodak photo paper for inkjet and gotten the same results. It simply does not detect that there is paper loaded.

I have tried resetting the unit, powering off then on, disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord. Nothing causes it to recognize that paper is loaded after it feeds the first sheet through. Press the 'OK' button and it will feed another sheet and continue to report 'paper out'.

I don't want to replace such a lightly used printer. If I can correct whatever is wrong with the paper sensor it would be a blessing. Help!

Ok, so I've got a Dell Dimension 2530 a client brought in the other day wanting a fresh install of XP Home Edition on there.

Having being an older system with no recovery partition and hanging on the windows screen more times than not I popped in my XP HOME OEM DVD.

FIRST FAIL - No DVD drive...wouldn't read my external DVD drive...Having plenty on hand I popped one in for his main ROM Drive.

Booted up into the DVD fine...DELETED his old partition and reformatted just fine.

SECOND FAIL - Wake up and the installation hung up right near the end before you enter a user name and your authentication of windows for the system.

Normally when something like this has happened to me I can reboot the PC and it will resume the installation. This time that was not the case it posts, then goes to a black screen with a white blinking underscore for about 40 seconds like its trying to access my DVD...then the screen goes blank completely. ALT f4 wouldn't work and it sat there for a period of time...SO option one...I did some things in BIOS so I restored it to no avail...

This same thing happens to me when trying to boot to JUST the ROM drive.

I'm a tech by trade, but a beginning tech. Any help on this issue would be most appreciated.

Answer:Dell Dimension 2530 Completely STUMPED!

I would suggest testing the hard drive using the manufacturer diagnostics.

I have a few questions:
1. I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo La 1703, now as far as I understand I have a 5400RPM hardrive in there , and on amazon there is the seagate 5400RPM LINK but also the 7200RPM LINK, and they are fairly the same price so the question is will my laptop be compatible with the 7200RPM hardrive?

2. I have found the Kingston RAM compatible with my computer on amazon, LINK but I've heard that crucial is good - should I go with the Kingston or the Crucial?

3. On the crucial website they give specs for the RAM compatible with my laptop:
Module Size: 2GB kit (1GBx2)
Package: 200-pin SODIMM Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300 Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

now I'm not really tech spec words savy so, what I did was just match up the best I could with amazon and found this:
Kingston - Memory - 1 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR II - 667 MHz / PC2-5300 - unbuffered

but now I see a second on amazon:
Kingston Technology 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM

So, which Kingston should I go for? If not going with the crucial?

I have a wireless router that is suppose to support up to 300mb/s. I have a home file sharing network setup on this router. How come I can only see max of 2.4 mb/s when tranfering files? It is not via internet. Just in house. What would the bottle neck be? PC A is hooked up wired to router. PC B is wireless with a wireless n wlan card. Both are running windows 7. What am I missing? I would think it should be way faster than this. Like 50mb/s or so?? Am I way off? Is this even possible? Any info would be much appreciated.

Answer:300mb/s router- only 2.4mb/s actual??

There are SO many variables with wireless...

Speed drops off with distance from router after about 6 feet.
Speed drops off dramatically with walls or other obstructions.
Speed drops off in the presense of other 2.4 GHz noise. Other routers, micro wave ovens etc.
And finally manufacturers, ahem, streach the truth. 300Mbps may be the peak theoretical but only if you have an N adapter and an N router within 10 feet of each other in a completely shielded RF cage If there is even ONE other wifi hotspot in your area speed will be dropped from 300 theoretical peak to 50 theoretical peak right there (by "law").

Download a wifi signal scanner program for your computer (or phone!) and first find out what other people are using in your area. Make sure that your router is not set to the same channel as 3 other people close to you.

If you only have a G adapter in your computer then 50 Mbps is the absolute max and typically expect to see half that under good conditions. Less if other routers in the area, less if going through walls, less if 100 feet away, less if bad antenna positions, etc...

If you have a smartphone with wifi, one of those Wifi analysis apps can be really great at setting up and testing signal strength and avoiding the neighbors wifi devices.

Hi Guys, laptop I am currently runing 32 bit win 7 os on an accer laptop with 64 bit processers and have now an option of installing 64 bit os, this will take advantage of all the ram I have but will it run that much faster and can I just upgrade to this or will this be a format and install.

Answer:Wishing some advice re win 7 32 bit 0r 64 bit

I don't know if it will be any quicker, we have both 32 and 64 bit windows 7 on laptops here at home (with similar spec) and there is no noticible difference in speed but there may well be when running processor/memory hungry apps.As far as the install goes it would be a format and re-install of all software etc., after all, basically you are running a complete new OS in a 'new' environment (64 bit instead of 32 bit) so to speak. Any 32 bit program software is installed in the x86 program files folder and 64 bit in the x64 folder.

Whats the limit on GB for a hardrive on this Dell Optiplex gx270?

Or do you recomend anything?

Hey guys!

I have a bit of an odd situation on my hands! Long story short, I have an old Windows Vista PC desktop that currently runs my wonderful soundcard that I use to convert and edit some audio. It's been down for a few years due to a graphics card problem, but I'm looking to do a few cheap upgrades to get it up and running again. One of these upgrades includes an OS update to W10!

My sister's old laptop was running Windows 7, but the laptop eventually burned out and she purchased a new one. I saved the HD, and presumably the copy of W7 on it. I was hoping to upgrade this copy to Windows 10, then transfer it to the Vista PC (both are 32 bit) and physically upgrade the Vista PC from there. Just looking for the best upgrade path!

I'm not sure if I should try to boot the old laptop drive, upgrade that drive to 10, use a key searcher to find the key, deauthorize it, then install it clean on the Vista PC, or what the best method is.

Just looking for a few thoughts and some advice. Thanks for reading!

Answer:Best path for Windows 7 upgrade to 10, from old hardrive to Vista PC?

First - the Windows 7 on the old laptop is probably an OEM version so it would violate the license agreement to use that to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 with.

Do all the upgrades on your computer, except for new hard drive.

Only if the Windows 7 was a retail version - I would put that hard drive in your computer and boot from it. Let it settle down with installing new drivers and everything. You can use showkey plus to get the Windows 7 product key. If the Windows 7 stayed activated , upgrade the installed Windows 7 to Windows 10 and get that activated. That will save the license for your computer for Windows 10 on Microsoft activation servers and then you can clean install Windows 10 on your computer.

Hi,I am considering getting a t510 and upgrade it with a 160GB Intel X-25M afterwards (possibly 3rd party as Lenovo doesn't have it now). But I am worried about losing the Enhanced Experience optimization altogether by using 3rd party hardware. On the other hand, hardrive swap doesn't seem a big system change. Does anyone have any experience with this - using 3rd party drive on a Thinkpad with EE certification? Have you lost the optimization?Plus, is that drive included in the official Lenovo FRU list? Thanks!

Answer:SSD hardrive upgrade and Windows 7 Enhanced Experience

You shouldn't loose anything if you restore your factory image to the SSD. If you want to do a fresh install: The EE optimizations are actually 3 different types. 1 - BIOS ==> will stay optimized as you don't upgrade/reflash it to a different version2 - drivers ==> as long as they are available as downloads, you shouldn't have any problems3 - apps ==> same as for "2" ==> You should feel a speed boost that far exceeds that of the EE optimizations altogether, so I would strongly recommend you to upgrade :-)

Hi all...Hopefully someone can give me some advise. I have a dell xps laptop that is about 6 years old. It can with a 40G hardrive and I recently purchased a 320G. I contacted dell to make sure that I could use a 320 in it and they said yes. I tried using True Image, ghost and they both said that the image completed with a total of 320G of space, after a reboot it only sees 40G. I flashed the Bios to the updated version, with no change. I used a Partian software to see if it would find the other space...still nothing. I took it to comp usa, paid them 100.00 with the same result..

Is there anything else I can try to get the laptop to see the rest of the new hardrive?

Thank you!!

Today I bought Samsun 840 PRO 128GB with 390/500MB and install it in my notebook, but in test I get only 300MB/s, why?

Its SATA III port, so I should get this 500MB like other person.

Answer:Satellite P750-10C: SSD not so fast - get only 300MB/s

From my knowledge some models of Satellite P750 series would support two HDDs

I think that the HDD1 and HDD2 would be connected to port 0 and 1 and for both HDDs 600MB/s (2x 300MB/s ) data throughput would be reserved.
I think in such case even if the notebook would support one HDD, only 300MB/s would be possible.

SATA port 2 where ODD is connected would support only 300MB/s

The Satellite M70-340 was delivered with the SATA 60GB 5400rpm HDD.

You should only ensure that the HDD size and the interface are supported!

At the moment Ihave a Vista wiress HP laptopwhic ipresume is fitted with a standard wireless connecto,it is 2 years old.I have also a Desktop 6 years old which my son fitted a wireless card 3 years ago inside the Desktop. The both run froma Siemens Router supplied by Tiscali about 2 years ago.I normally get about 7 GB which is good.Tiscali tell me they have upgraded my connection to 24 Gig but I still only get 7.If I bought a modern N router could I get a fasterconnection or would I be wasting my money,I am 2 miles from my BT station.

Answer:Will using an N 300mb Router improve my speed.

I would suggest he 'maximum' speed quoted would be under perfect conditions. As soon as others start using the connection the speed must drop; this also applies to other conditions - the line quality, distance from your local exchange etc.You may get an improvement using a router capable of higher speed but it is a risk you should determine. If you are happy with your current speed I should save the money. As an aside, do you mean 7MB/sec is your usual speed. 7GB/sec would be very quick.

i know there is a .exe that has a really cool wallpaper..but its bundled with spyware...i you really need an exe to download a .jpg? nuh uh!

I was there is a program that takes apart an .exe so that i can just get what i want? and toss away rest of the junk? (with out even installing the exe or spyware)

if so that would be i can use themexp get all the good themes...and take out the spyware bundles...

Answer:wishing to take apart an .exe to remove

It's not likely unfortunately.

Unless you had access to the source code for the .exe, its almost impossible to tell what belongs to the executable code and what belongs to the "spyware".

It would require "reverse assembly" of the file, which is very difficult unless you wrote it.

hi guys.
here is the situation -
i have HDD C: - where windows 7 is installed.
i also have HDD D: where all my programs are installed.
i just bought HDD X: which is completely clean and formatted.
what i wish to do is install win7 on X: and slowly install all the prgrams i have on D: also on X: so eventually i can stop using C: as my boot drive (cuz C: is old and small and full to the brim).
also , since installing everything is a long process during which i will be left without a fully operated computer to work on i wish to do this in small increments and continue using the computer with my windows on C: and run the programs from D: until i have everything on X: so i can migrate.
so my quesion is - how do i go about and do that?
i have (legally) DLed windows 7 from a website into D:.
1) should I try and install it from where i DLed it? will it ask me where to install windows 7 (so i can tell it to install on X:) or will it overwrite my current win7 on C:?
2) after i have installed win7 on X: should i reboot the computer and set the bios to boot from X: instead of C: and then install all programs into X:?
3) lets say i have win7 and a few programs on X:, how can i go back to boot from C: and run the programs and games i have on D: just like i did before?
i assume there is a way to use two operating systems at once but i have never done this so i dont know how to go about doing this and if it is a good way of achieving wh... Read more

Answer:Wishing to install windows 7 on another HDD

Well...what I would do is use Macrium Reflect and...
a. First clone the hard drive currently with a partition I create on the new large drive.
b. Then...clone the contents of the drive with a second partition on the new large drive.
Whole thing takes less that 45 minutes (probably) and you have a valid, working Windows and all programs on the same drive.
If you want to adjust the partition can do that later with any number of utilites.

I Finally got the new build to boot my OS (Microsoft vista ultimate 64 bit).
What finally worked was switching the RAM into different slots.

there are still many issues arising that i have been working on as often as i possibly i can.

Every time i turn it on it goes to the "windows error recovery" and wont let me click up or down to choose like safe mode. Also last know good configuration isn't a choice. The first time it did this it went to the Blue Screen of Death. (physical mem. Dump) From there i turned it off. I turned it back on and it did the same thing but this time i let it start itself back up and it turned on and then my auto stuff came on (AIM, and About). Then it BSOD (physical mem dump) and turned off!!

Ive had a csc error before, The boot menu is frozen and ive never been able to change anything in there. . . it lets me into bios fine...

Ideas please please please.. I would appreciate it so much?

Answer:Almost wishing i had bought a comp. from best buy :(

When you have that screen with boot options, you have to use the keyboard. The mouse won't work till you get into the OS. From your use of "click up or down" I assumed you meant with the mouse. If you use the keyboard it should let you move with the arrow keys to make your selection.

Also, what issues exactly have you been having?

Another thing that can help us is if you tell us the exact error message of those Blue Screens. They will include data such as:

File ntfs.swe is corrupt or missing... blah blah blah...

STOP: 000000000x00000007E (0000c000s023000x00s00c000350x00200300c0g)

Get all that information and we will be able to help you out in finding the culprit.

One of my computers seems to have caught some malware. Windows XP Home running AVG antivirus.

When clicking on search results in Google, it takes me to pages other than the search result. So, I suspected Adware. I downloaded AdAware from this site and started to run it. AdAware shut down about 3 minutes into the computer scan and that program is now inaccessible.

I tried to install other similar programs and get a message saying I do not have sufficent rights on the machine to install programs. It's an administrator profile and I just installed AdAware, so obviously something is screwy. Sooooooooo, since I can't follow the instructions listed on this site to diagnose my problem (because I can't install any software), can anyone help me out?

I guess the answer I am looking for is to this question. How do I get my rights back to install software? Then, I believe I can install the software to diagnose the problem and remove the malware. If you disagree, please let me know what you think! Thanks!

Answer:Wishing there were computer condoms . . .

Please, if you haven't already, follow the instructions here:
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Both ComboFix and MGTools require no installation.

Have you tried running any of the scans in safe mode? Did you rename them as suggested?

It is becoming a very common problem these days for malware to change SeDebugPrivilege on administrator type accounts. They do this to prevent you from running various tools to help in the removal of malware. Tools like rootkit detectors and Look2Me-Destroyer commonly make use of this priviledge to help locate and/or remove stubborn malware. If you run a tool and receive a message similar to below (note this is an example for F-Secure's BlackLight Rootkit tool)

F-Secure BlackLight was unable to acquire necessary privileges (SeDebugPrivilege)

it means that the application cannot run and that you must restore the SeDebugPrivilege level on the user account being used. The below steps will do this for you.

Download SeDebug-Restore
Save to your desktop and double click to run.

An hour ago I ran CleanUp! and rebooted. While certain Windows issues I had been experiencing seem to have been resolved, I immediately noticed that new and slightly more crippling issues took their places.

In an attempt to resolve this, I inserted my Windows XP Home XP2 Operating System CD that came with my laptop. This is the message I immediately received when I tried to proceed:

(Windows Setup)
"The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because setup was unable to load the file D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL The system cannot find the file specified."

I don't know if this missing (?) file is the same file responsible for my invisible (?) icons and other necessary images required for navigating my system. I can't assume anything, because I don't have sufficient knowledge to safely assume anything. I barely have enough computer savvy to make educated guesses, but I don't suppose this is news to you folks by now. I can only hope that I am at least a source of amusement to some.

Anyway...after I had been given this message, I was allowed to choose to just do a completely new install (I don't remember the exact wording and I forgot to write it down - sorry). As I have backups of all my important data, and have a recovery disk and so on, I decided to "go for it." Alright, This whole thing started when a friend of mine gave me his old 500gb ext. HDD That he said he didn't need anymore. I knew him pretty well and that he kept his computer clean, so I figured that it was fine to plug in the old hard drive. Well it turns out that I was wrong. When I plugged in the drive, I instantly got 3 or 4 alert boxes from MSE saying it had blocked an attack coming from drive D:\. Scared, I started a full scan using Avast on the drive, and 30 minutes later, it found 5 trojans on the drive, one of them being an autorun.inf, which i'm guessing was set to run on the insertion of the drive. After the scan I opened up Task Manager and set it to show processes from all users, and sure enough there was svchost using 300MB of ram. Crap. I clicked on svchost and told it to go to the services it is hosting, and sure enough, its hosting very VERY sketchy services;
UxSms - Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
TrkWks - Distributed Link Tracking Client
HomeGroupListener - HomeGroup Listener
hidserv - Human Interface Device Access
Netman - Network Connections
IPBusEnum - PnP-X IP Bus Eneumerator
PcaSvc - Program Compatibility Assistant Service
SysMain - Superfetch
AudioEndpointBuilder - Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Wlansvc - WLAN AutoConfig
The description of these services all have something to do with monitoring what i'm doing on my computer, and sending it back to somewhere. I have no idea what was on that drive, because I haven't plugged ... Read more

Do I need to know any special details to completely remove Foxit Reader version 4, which was not installed, but was unpacked from a zip file download? It was unpacked to a folder on C:\, and I find two empty folders also exist in the Applications Data directory; I do not know how to check if there are any Registry items for Foxit Reader. I would not know what to do/how to handle them if any exist. Maybe safest just to leave all in place, but prefer to completely remove if possible. I currently use PDF-Xchange Viewer.

I had an awful virus, and just had my computer cleaned out with Trend HiJacker, I get a phone call. It was local call, so I answered it. I was expecting a call from an insurance adjuster, who I did not know his phone number, but I expected it to be the same area code as mine. I answered the call, the party on the other end hung up. It was just as I suspected. I ran in my office and I saw the light on my modem flashing. I pulled the ethernet plug out of the back of the computer and went out to have a cigarette, discusted. Someone sent the virus back. When I went back in the house and turned the computer back on, the screen flashed, I can't remember the exact wording, "finishing up Windows" and then I got my sign on screen. The phone number was 1-231-354-8002, the product that was sent to me, as far as I can tell was NTI Back Up Now and I have sent this community all my computer information to help me figure out how to get rid of the virus/trojan/whatever-the-hell-it-is.

I've just recieved my new hardrive and need to copy the contents of the old one to the new one. The new hardrive came with no extra software. I have Norton Ghost, so naturally I went to the Copy Hardrive tool only to find it lists my current hardrive to copy to. How can I copy the contents if I need to install the hardrive? I mean surely it'll not do anything if I just put the new hardrive in?

Please help!

Answer:How to copy contents of hardrive to new hardrive on Tecra 9100?

ok, here?s my suggestion:

Put the new harddrive in, recover the machine then get a external "usb-hdd case" and copy your data to your machine.

I mean it can?t be easier and you will get a new and clean system.
If you got some further questions, just ask.

Hey Guys can I Partion A hardrive With Windows XP installed on to the hardrive like split from

I just dont want to go to the trouble of formatting and i would like to have 2 different oses in case something goes wrong i can jump to the different one.

Answer:Partion A hardrive With Windows XP installed on to the hardrive

It sounds like you already have the whole drive partitioned. The only way I know to split an already-in-use partition is by using Norton Partition Magic. Just Google it, and you will turn up some results.

so if i by a laptop with no OS, but a large enough hardrive and memeory can i copy my PC desktop hardrive to that computer and have a functional OS along with all of my files

Answer:Newbie.. copy PC hardrive to new laptop hardrive? possible

not a good idea... when you install an os on your pc it is configured to your hardware specs... so just transferring it to a laptop will result in the os throwing a major fit... it probably wont start, or if it does it wont function properly.

This shows up when I do Disk Cleanup for Windows - Cleanup Files. When I go to delete it, it says it "can help identify and troubleshoot problems that occur during Windows installation, upgrade or servicing. Deleting these files can make it difficult to troubleshoot installation issues." I think it's from when I changed from XP to Windows 10. Is it OK to delete it?

Answer:Delete "windows Update Log File" 300mb?

Yes it is.
To put it another way...
It will cost you as much as a new PC to pay someone to go through 300 MB of log files.

I have 2 pc's (winxp) about 40m apart with a 10/100Mb switch (netgear FS605) in the middle (about 20m away from each pc). Trouble is i can only achieve speeds of 10Mbp/s. Both PC's have 100Mb NIC installed. If i try to force both NIC's to 100Mb i get 'network cable unplugged' so the only way is to force them down to 10Mb.How can i increase the speed up too 100Mb? What hardware is required to do so? Product suggestions welcome. All help greatly appreciated.

Question: 100MB

So I had that partition in Windows 7 that is "reserved" so I followed the instructions in the tutorials on how to remove that 100MB reserve and how to repair the MB loader. Everything went per the tutorial.

Only thing is when I go to Control Panel-->System and Security-->Administrative Tools-->Computer Management and then I look at the Disk Management, the 100MB is listed as unallocated. How can I get that 100MB back with the main part of the drive where the OS resides on?

Answer:only see's 100mb of HD

Did you happen to catch the stop code?

Try using GParted, and see what's up with your drive.

I have a LANhere in my house with 4 PC's on it. All the PC's have 10/100 NICs and the cheap mini switch i bought is a 100/10M net-Lynx SW808X-R.

The problem i have is that if i have a network cable longer than a few feet i have to set the PC network card to 10MB as at 100MB it is not seen on the network and can't browse. If i move the offending PC close to the mini switch and use a short cable, its fine at 100MB.

All the cables check out fine so i was wondering if maybe the mini switch might be the problem and maybe it's attenuating the signal or something?

Has anyone heard of this?

I tried running this network tweak:

But I am still seeing a 12-16% average network useage when I look at it under the task manager while transferring large files over the local network. I have been thinking about switching to Gigabit because the network seems slow to me. But if I can actually eliminate this cap, then I may be happy with what I have. Here is the setup:

Fileserver: Windows 2000Pro, 100Mb NIC

100Mb 5 port switch

My PC: Onboard Gigabit NIC

I have tried setting it to be static 100MB full duplex on both machines and half duplex on both. I have tried the above tweak. Still I only get 12-16% utilization of my network. Is the Task manager just not reading right?

Anyone have any ideas on tweaking networks to get a little better speed out of them. I am willing to give just about any suggestion a shot.

Answer:20% cap on 100Mb XP Networks

Set both NIC's back to auto speed/duplex. You can't hard set these on a regular soho switch, the switch gets confused.

As long as they're both auto-negging 100/full you should get atleast 80mbit between the 2.

Those speed hacks don't work, it should work just fine out of the box.

Question: gigabit vs. 100mb

Here's an interesting dilemma. I haven't made cables since the gigabit stuff came about, but I can't find any information on wiring changes. Here's my problem. I've strung cable for an entire office (7 modular ports) back to a punchdown block (568 A color scheme should that matter) From this punchdown block I have patch cables made from the same cabling running to a gigabit netgear 24 port switch. 5 such switches are involved in this network total, and all are linked by the same patch cables I made for the punchdown to switch cabling mentioned. All switches show 1gb speed lights for the switch to switch connections, and 6/7 punchdown to switch connections show 100mb, one shows 1gb. If I move the patch cable from the 1gb working port to any other it makes no difference and only shows 100mb. If I remove any of the 6 100mb ports patch cabling and replace the patch cable with a store bought cable, it shows 1gb and runs fine. Is there something new about attaching ends to a 100mb vs. 1gb patch cable?
thanks in advance,

Hi Gang,

I am looking at buying a new switch to add to my network. I can get an 8 port 10/100 switch for $45 or a 10/100/1000 switch for $110.

Realistically, how much faster will the 1GB switch be given that transfer rates are often limited by the hard drive?

Answer:Switch: 1GB vs. 100MB

do you have GiGe Nics in all of your PCs?

if yes then youll benefit.

its not necessarily limited by the hard drive per se.

gigabit in laymens terms just means more data leaves in each group.

Having some issues with the NIC on my laptop. Last night I noticed my transfer speeds were significantly slower than usual, when I checked the NIC speed it was set at 100MB.

Laptop - Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520 - Windows 7 x64
NIC - Realtek RTL8105E-V

Troubleshooting steps thus far:
- different cable
- different switch
- removed/updated driver (from Dell and directly from Realtek)
- statically set NIC with 1GB Full-Duplex
- flash BIOS

Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:NIC operating at 100MB not 1GB

Maybe the nic card itself is going out. I had this same issue last week. Switched the cable out with cat 7. It's all good now.

I have a 320gb Western Digital IDE HDD. Just installed windows 7 64bit. I installed Partition Magic 8 after i installed all updates for windows. When I tried to run the program for the first time it got some errors that it said it could "automatically fix" I clicked yes to it fixing them. I don't know what exactly they said. Just a bunch of numbers. Program wouldn't start because of compatibility issues. I went to uninstall the program as soon as i hit "uninstall" the computer got a BSOD. Tried start up repair and everything. After about 2 hours I got tired of trying so I decided to just reinstall windows. When it asked me to select the drive to install windows on, to my surprise my 320gb HDD now only has 100MB of TOTAL space?! WHAT HAPPENED and HOW DO I FIX THIS! Please!!

Answer:HDD 320gb to 100mb? HELP!

Sounds to me you used partition magic and it created an extra partition.

So what happened is because your drive probably has a partial partition, your no longer accessing the whole drive size.

You have to delete that partition and reallocate the whole drive size back to your windows installation.

I am not familiar with partition magic.

I know if your lucky to have an old Windows 95/98/ME startup disk laying around, you can use Fdisk from those disks to delete that partition.

There might be a way to do that from with-in Partition magic, but those instructions I do not have.

Perhaps someone else can explain that program to you, but I replied only to tell you what happened.

I'm sure some of you know that particular versions of Windows 7 creates 100MB partition upon the its installation mainly for the BitLocker feature.
I bought Windows 7 Ultimate from Amazon and it is one of them.

I know it also contains WinRE, but I know Windows 7 can use its own partition where it's installed on for the Recovery Environment. I'm also aware that the automatic process of 100MB being created can be avoided DURING the Windows installation with some tricks.

Normally, I would not care about it as a 100MB-reduction over my 500GB HDD is nothing to worry about, and I would probably say OK for creating one extra partition. Maximum active partition I would use for myself is two: one for the Windows and the other as a personal archive.

But the problem here is that I'm using Mac Book Pro which already creates two partitions for its own OS and that leaves me no choice to create an additional personal archive drive. I can live with that, but the real problem is that when Windows 7 creates the 100MB partition, it does not follow the standard procedure of altering the partition table which results mixing up the partition table to be inconsistent. That is, it only alters the MBR partition table while leaving the GUID partition table untouched.

Mac OS X, on the same computer, then looks up the hybrid table and has no idea what they are, hence reading both partition as one to be one FAT-32 table while it's actually two NTFS drives. This does not allow me to access the NTFS ... Read more

Here is my situation:
I have an older hard drive, which was used for my previous operating system. Disk has two partitions: System (C: ) and Data (D: ) I want to delete all data on System partition but nothing on Data partition. I also want to have only one system for booting at this time. So after turning on the computer I want to boot to my windows accout automatically, without choosing an operating system to boot. I know how to automate logging into windows, that is not problem for me.)

I need to install Windows 7 x64 Ultimate but WITH 100MB partition (I know, almost every user is asking for the information how to remove that partition, but I really NEED it!)
Problem is, that during installation I do not how to force windows to create that 100MB partition and also re-write MBR, so only one record will be in MBR.

What should I do? Should I remove only system partition without formatting it during the installation process, or should I also format it? I can not format whole hard drive, because I do not have another hard drive to backup all data on Data partition.

Please help. Thanks to everybody who helps.

Answer:I NEED 100MB partition

Hello emel,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

You've got it. Delete the system partition C: and leave it as unallocated space. You can do this under Custom Install when booted from the DVD (maybe advanced options at the pick a partition screen if I remember). Then install there and Seven will do the rest. You will not get a Windows.old folder doing this, so make sure that you have everything you need off of the C drive (email etc. if stored there.)

Hope this helps.

Correct me, if I wrong.T60 and z60 are almost the same. There are t60 with Core 2 duo procesors, or even just dual core. So if i bought anywhere c2d from t60, it should work with mine z60m?

Answer:z60m & c2d

Though I believe they will fit, a Core 2 Duo will not work in a Z60m because the Z60m uses a Pentium M CPU.
