Yoga 2 11 : Won't detect headphones or mic with dual headphone/mic jack

Question: Yoga 2 11 : Won't detect headphones or mic with dual headphone/mic jack

Hello I recently got a Lenovo Yoga 211 Laptop/Tablet and am having problems with getting the laptop to detect the headphones/mic Once I plug the headphones (with built in mic) into the laptop, I can hear just fine. However, the mic fails to work. I was hoping to set the laptop to use the headphones for playback, and internal microphone for recording. However, I cannot find the headphones or the external microphone in the sound manager to do this. And once I plug in the headphones, the internal mic stops working entirely. I have a Thinkpad laptop that had this problem and I managed to use the Realtek Audio Manager to solve the problem. On the Thinkpad, I have it so that I can use the internal microphone even with the headphones plugged in. Is there a way to do that for the Yoga series? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you for your time!-Em

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My speakers on my Yoga 2 Pro work fine.  Today, I plugged in headphones and only sound came through the right ear side.  I checked the headphones themselves with my phone and they worked fine.  I got earbuds out to test them.  The earbuds had sound only coming out on the left side.  Again, tested the earbuds with my phone and they worked fine.  It is the headphone jack in the Yoga Pro for sure.  Suggestions?

I have a Yoga 900 laptop. I have had it for less than a year and up to this point it has worked well. It no longer recognizes my headphones when I plug them into the headphone jack. When I have headphones plugged in, the sound still comes from the speakers. When I right click on the speaker icon and choose playback devices, it only have my speakers listed. I have used three different types of headphones, updated the drivers, and rebooted the computer numerous times. I have searched for hours online to figure out this problem, but have had no luck.

I just got a Hp Envy laptop and I can't plug my headphones into the headphone jack.  I've never plugged them in before which is why I'm confused.    Right now, when I try to plug my apple headphpones in, only a small part goess in and then they don't go any further.  I think there may be something stuck inside the jack.  It looks like there may be a small clear ball in there, but I've never seen it before.  Am I just using the wrong type of headphones? Or is the ball supposed to be there and I'm supposed to take it out somehow? ANd if there actuallly is something stuck in there, any suggestions as to how to take it out?  Thanks in advanced!

Answer:Headphones won't plug into headphone jack

Hello @mkoo , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you're unable to connect headphones to your notebook. There shouldn't be anything you need to remove from the port. Some models have multiple output ports so make sure the port you're connecting to has the following label:  If the port has that label and you're using standard headphones with a 1/8" connector (standard size for most headphones) there shouldn't be anything stopping it from going in all the way. Check the connection on the headphones and tell me if it has 2 or 3 rings on it like this: As you can see the left jack has 3 rings and the right has only 2. Lastly, try your headphones in another PC, iPod, or audio device to make sure the headphone jack is correct. If it works in everything else there is most likely something blocking the jack or you are connecting it to the wrong port. Let me know if this helps.

I have a Lenovo w540, latest bios firmware, and windows 7 64bit. I also have the docking station. The headhpnes will not work on the laptops headphone jack, nor the docking stations headphone jack. I have tried 3 different sets of headphones that *all* work on my phone. What gives? Is there a setting somewhere I need to check?

I just got the y50 fresh out the box and the headphone jack doesn't accept any of my headphones. I've tried two different headohones and a mic. Whenever I put one in they only fit in so far but not far enough to stay in, but just enough that if your holding it in yourself the computer will register it's there. However, if you don't it just pops out. I don't know if there's such a thing as the length being to much or something or if my labtop is broken. If someone could clarify that'd be very helpful.

Answer:Problem with the Y50's headphone jack not accepting my headphones.

I've got the exact same problem.  Does anyone know how to fix this? And please don't say that we need a headset splitter. The problem is with the audio jack in the computer. It's not accepting the headphone jack all the way in. It only goes like 75% of the way in.

I recently broke the headphone socket in my laptop (Dell 17R-7720), the jack still works if headphones are plugged in they will play but they are not detected and sound continues to play out the speakers as well.

If I disable the speakers in playback devices then the jack will stop working, I am sure there must be a simple solution to disable the speakers and keep the jack playing but it is one I cannot seem to find...

Thanks for the help

Answer:Headphone jack not registering headphones when pluged in

The problem is that there is an additional contact in the headphone jack, for sensing and "telling" the sound chip to mute the speakers. Since the jack is "broke" the sensing is no longer there.

On many Dell laptops, the headphone jack is on a sub-assembly. If that is the case with this one, that sub-assembly will have to be replaced.

Hi, I've got a pc on which the headphone jack is broken. Trying a usb sound card - looks like a dongle-y thing which sticks in a usb port and has a mic and a headphone jack on it. When plugged in it has a red light which flashes - maybe meaning it's connected? - but when I plug headphones in to it i get no sound. Sorry but I know little about this area. Maybe I need to go into some sort of control panel to tell the system to send sound this way? Any advice would be great. TIA - Terry

Answer:pc headphone jack broken trying usb sound but nothing to headphones

Has it occurred to you that it may be the Jack Plug (male), or cable, that is at fault. Rather than the Socket (female) that is at fault?

So, I have a laptop with a single headphone jack, and it has the little symbol with both an headphone and a mic.
I have bought a V-moda boom pro mic. The microphone is integrated in the cable, and the tip that goes in the jack has four "parts", as it should be. The headphones work just fine, the moment I plugged it in the sound came to my headphones, but the computer just keeps using the integrated mic instead of the one on the cable. I have checked the sound settings, nothing changes, neither in the Realtek manager.

The microphone came with a splitter, and i even tried plugging in only the mic part, but still nothing.

unfornatly, i don't have any other exterernal mic to test the jack with, and as far as I know, everything is updated

Answer:Combo headphone jack does not detect mic

Welcome to the TenForums.

If you right the speaker in task bar and then select recording devices, does your headset mic appear on list?

If you click your headset mic once and then click properties can you set levels?

I have a windows 10 laptop and up until yesterday everything was fine , and suddenly it seems that my audio jack doesn;t detect my headphone. I connect my headphone to the audio jack, but the sounds just came out my laptop's speaker. I've tried to switch to my earphone and the result is the same. I've tried several solutions like uninstalling my driver or trying to get to the sounds properties , but the results are the same. Please give me your help , and btw I'm new here.

Answer:Audio jack seems not detect my headphone

With what you stated you've tried, it could be an internal connection problem. Many Laptops have a small I/O board that is connected via a cable to the main board. If yours is this type, it may require "reseating" (unplug then plug back in) the connector.

I've found old threads talking about this problem, but they mostly just suggest to switch the device into a "multistream mode" instead of a "Classic mode." My X1 shipped with the multistream mode enabled by default. I got the X1 in Dec.2014, but this problem still exists for me. I constantly use my speakers and headphones so it's really annoying that sometimes I plug in my headphones and the laptop doesn't realize and keeps playing through the main speakers, and otherwise sometimes thinks headphones are plugged in when they're not. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? It seems fairly widespread.

Answer:X1 headphone jack problems. Not consistent detecting headphones or not. Any solution?

Update:The computer actually knows if something is plugged in or not. If you open the realtek drivers, they can see when you plug something in or out. The only way I can get it to switch between headphones and speakers is if I reload the audio source (if it's a youtube video.) I also have to shut down my media player and play the movie again if it's a movie. This is not great, but its livable. Any one know why the X1 speakers work in that strange way?

Had this problem for some time now, called customer support but their methods did not work.

When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack the sound continues to come out of the speakers. I will go into sound settings and it says that the headphones are plugged in but the sound continues to come out of the speakers.

Anything that can be done to fix this?

Answer:Satellite L305D-S5879 - Headphone jack does not recognise headphones

Hi!

This is strange and I can?t say at the moment what is the reason for this problem.

First you should try to update the BIOS and the sound drivers. Both you can find on the Toshiba website:

Have you installed the notebook with the recovery disk or Microsoft disk?

Inspiron 15 3000 audio jack cant detect headphone, but dell audio can detect something plugged in. However the playback device at Sound cannot detect any headphone. Now i only receive buzzing sound in headphone. How to fix this problem??

Answer:Inspiron 15 3000 audio jack cant detect headphone

Hello. To test the headphone jack switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
If there is still only buzzing even with the native driver, test using other headphones. If still no luck then probably hardware failure. Contact tech support for repair if under warranty.
If it works okay with the native driver then the Realtek driver is buggy. Try a different version of the driver. If you need help with that reply back with the full model name (something like "Inspiron 11 3147", etc) and which operating system it has.

So I've had a Lenovo Yoga 710-151KB for about half a year now and it's been pretty good so far, at least compared to my previous laptop. However, its headphone jack suddenly stopped working today. It was working fine before I went to bed last night, and I haven't downloaded anything or even visited any websites other than youtube between then and now. All of my drivers are updated and the headphones work fine with my phone. Also, the laptop seems to recognize when they're plugged in (sound stops coming out of the speakers), but it doesn't recognize what they are (ie the Sound application still lists them as "disconnected"). I tried plugging in my roommate's headphones too and the same thing happened. What should I do?

This is an odd one...

I have a Yoga 2 Pro, which has served me very well for over a year now.

But very recently I have encountered a problem now.

The computer thinks headphones are plugged in all the time now! No sound will come out of the speakers, despite all the windows 10 software telling me that there is no problem, and that the speakers are the only outlet. Even the sound controls recognises sound (the equaliser rise and fall).

Sound works perfectly when the headphones are plugged in. And even more recently, the notification that goes 'Information: you have just plugged/unplugged a device into the audio jack' is now alternating andspamming my laptop every once in a while, with sound coming in, and then turning off, with nothing in the jack!
Any advice would be welcomed, as I have trawled the internet to find a solution, yet have come up empty handed.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

I'm not an owner of your model, but one thought came to mind.  Possibly the contacts inside the headphone port are sticking thus the machine thinks the headphones are always inserted.  Try repeatedly inserting and removing the headphone plug to see if the problem will clear.

Hello! The headphone jack on my yoga worked yesterday, but not today.  When I plug headphones into the jack, the audio continues to play out of my yoga's internal speakers.  I did nothing to change the software of the computer since then, and the computer has not suffered any hardware damage like a drop, but it has been cold recently had I commute by bike with the laptop in my backback, so it will be exposed to 20 degree temperatures (F) for 15 mintues at a time. I updated the BIOS and audio drivers to no avail.  Is there a quick fix to this or do I need to send it in for repair? Thanks!

Hi Guys, For the Yoga 2 Pro owners out there, how much static do you have in your headphone jack?  I am loving everything about this laptop except for some noticeable static at low volumes and some backlight bleeding at the bottom of the screen.  I have tried two different headsets, my Senheiser HD 280 Pros and my Etymotic earbuds. I am curious how everyone elses behaves.  If this is normal I can probably live with it.  If I am the only one, I may get it replaced.  Build date 11/06/2013, purchased from Lenovo's website. Thanks,Dan

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Static/Noise in Headphone Jack

Just wanted to add a little bit more detail to this. I just experienced the problem where you plug in your headphones but the audio stops playing. When I plugged the headphones in, there is no noise in the line. Perfectly clean. When I mute and unmute from the keyboard, the audio starts playing again, along with the static.I have the default format set to 24 bits, 192000 Hz. The static noise is present in all options but at 24 bits, 44100 Hz I also get a slight whistle. This plus the mute/unmute fix leads me to believe this is a software issue. If it were a ground issue, I would expect it to always be present?

So whenever I plug in my headphones to my laptop while I'm watching a video a notification comes up telling me that I just plugged in my headphones. It's useless information and I know how to turn it off but the real problem is that when that message comes up my sound goes away for a few seconds. Even when I turn off the notification there's still a sound delay and I don't hear a thing for a few seconds. Is there any way to fix this? It's also the 13 inch model.

My headphone jack doesn't output to the right headphone when I plug it in all the way. If I ever so slightly pull out the headphone jack about an 1/8th of an inch to the next knob it will output to both left and right headphones but with a high pitched noise in the background. Should I submit my laptop for servicing? Is there a fix to this issue? I have tried multiple headphones (which I have tested on other devices, that work fine on them) and this issue still persists.

Just picked up my Yoga 2 Pro from best buy. Updated all drivers and BIOS, and the yellow screen issue does seem to be fixed. Thank you Lenovo!  Now, sometimes when I plug my headphones in, no sound will play on the headphones. Realtek recognizes that I plugged in headphones, but no sound will play through them. When I restart the computer it works fine.   Also, I have a USB 3.0 external HDD. I use this harddrive without any issues on my Lenovo Y400 using the USB 3.0 port.  The external HDD is a Rosewill RX-358 V2 Silver. There's no drivers or anything from the manufacturer and I did not need to install any drivers on my Y400.  After plugging it into the USB 3.0 port of the Yoga 2 Pro, the computer seems to recognize it, but doesn't install any drivers and under My PC (My Computer) an external drive does show up, but does not allow me to open or access it. After a few more tries the drive icon doesn't even show up nor does the drive spool up when I plug it in. However, plugging the external hdd into the USB 2.0 port works just fine. Windows instantly recognized the drive.  I have tried USB 2.0 flash drives with the USB 3.0 port so as far as I can tell the port is not broken.  Please help

Hi all, I noticed an issue with my Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd that I didn't have with my older laptop. My monitor is connected through HDMI and has speakers. But sometimes I want to connect headphones to listen using them but the system doesn't switch to the laptop audio adapter automatically based on the trigger of inserting the headphone jack.It would be much more convinient if it did rather than needing to open Playback devices everytime to switch back and forth. My older laptop with Realtek adapter did that. I'm not sure if it's something that Windows did or the Audio driver did. Any ideas how can I get it to switch automatically?

I do too! However I noticed, oddly enough, that the phenomenon goes away when I plug the thing into AC power. Also, when I first upgraded to W10, there were some major changes to the sound capabilites - I could watch a YouTube video comfortably at maybe 4 in W8.1 while I had to crank it up past 80 in W10. After updating to W10v1511 this issue has since been fixed, and the volume of this hissing has also decreased.I tried a good many things too. Reinstalling the sound drivers, and all that.

I own a Thinkpad Yoga 14 20DM and currently there is a high pitched noise through the headphone jack.  Whenever I listen to music or watch a movie, this noise comes on and is extremely annoying.  It only happens when I have headphones or speakers plugged into the laptop. I have sent in my laptop three times to the Repair depot.  The first time was for a touchscreen replacement, and the bottom plastic casing was cracking.  When I got it back, it had this annoying headphone jack issue. I have sent in the laptop twice after that and it still has not been fixed.  The system and audio board have been replaced.  I even sent in the headphones with it and they still couldn't figure it out. I do not know what to do now.  I'm pretty frustrated about the experience and probably won't buy a Lenovo product again.   Is there anything else I can do?

Hey, so as the title says my Yoga 2 has some problems. Whenever I open or close my yoga it makes a snap/crack/pop sound, seems to be from the hinge. Anyone have any idea if the warranty would cover this? I just got this like the last week of August, so this is really upsetting. Also the headphone jack doesn't work at all, hasn't since the first time I tried it. It doesn't recognize that it is there (I've tried the device manager or whatnot, it is enabled just does not work). When I play music with the headphones in, the sound comes out of the speaker so it is super not working, ha. Any one have a solution?

Hello,

I just purchased a new notebook, and I have a bit of a problem. When I plug headphones into the side headphone jack, the sound quality is downright terrible. Very shortly I noticed that it didn't sound as good/decent as my older notebook.

The speakers seem to sound fine, well you know - as good as laptops can sound.

Right now I have two notebooks side by side:
a friends Samsung Series 3 (NP300E5C), with Windows 8 (upgraded from W7) / Microsoft High Definition audio
my Toshiba L50 Windows 8 / Realteck High Definition

I dont have my older notebook anymore, but I do remember it sounding better. Comparing this Toshiba to the Samsung (both sitting on the desk side-by-side), the Toshiba sounds a little better through the speakers, but there is no comparison with the headphone - The Samsung is pretty decent while the Toshiba makes me cry.

Now granted, I'm not expecting a symphony, but if I cant solve this I'm going to have to sell the Toshiba.

I've tried uninstalling Realtek, but I couldn't get the sound to work.
Re-installing Realtek solved nothing

One thing I noticed, there is no 'headphone' icon in the device manager (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound / or simply right click the audio icon in the taskbar). Are the headphones not high definition or something?

I haven't used one that had the port as a combined unit but I would assume you would need a headphone set with mic that has combined wiring, such as sets used for cell phones and such. You can also purchase an adapter that will split the port into 2 ports for mic and headphones.
Hope that gives you an idea

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

Hi, I just bought a dell 5567 laptop. The problem is that when I try to connect ordinary 3.5mm earphones  to my laptop's headphone port it doesn't go all the way in. Do I need an adapter for this?

Answer:3.5 mm headphone jack won't fit in headphone/mic combo jack.

JSmith887Do I need an adapter for this?
No it should go in. We have been getting reports of tight jacks. Don't know if it's a quality control issue. Try some different ones and insert more firmly than normally.
If none will go in all the way, but you do hear the audio, I wouldn't be too concerned. If not getting audio (the selection popup does not appear) because it won't go in, then contact tech support or send it back.

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

I have Lenovo 3000 Y410 laptop having Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. Realtek HD Audio latest driver is installed. But from the last 3 days, when I connect headphone through laptop, following things happen : -
1) Headphone connected popup doesn't show up.
2) Mic of Headphone connected pop shows up.

3) When I play video, sound coming from both headphone & laptop speakers.
4) When I mute sound by muting sound icon in taskbar, sound then comes only from headphone.

What I have tried?
1) Installed new Realtek HD Audio Manager.
2) Installed OS again.
3) Tried to change settings in Realtek Hd Audio Manager. But Nothing changes.

When I input headphone & mic jacks into laptop, & then check Realtek HD Audio Manager. The following image shows this : -

The green in realtek hd audio manager is for headphone & red is for mic. In the image, it is shown that headphone not connected & mic connected. But even headphone not connected shows up, sound coming form headphone.

I want to get sound from only headphone when headphone is connected. Is this a hardware problem ?

Please help....

Answer:Sound coming from both headphone & speaker but headphone is not detect

My Realtek HD Audio Manager has more options than yours.

Also, I notice you only have the microphone in the Recording Section of the Sound Panel. RIGHT click in an empty space in that Panel and then LEFT click Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The Stereo Mix should be shown and you can enable that and make it the default Recording device.

Where did you get the RealTek driver that you installed? If you are not using the Lenovo supplied sound driver, get that and install it as a first step. I have a Lenovo Laptop and it has Stereo Mix and other functions. I haven't looked at the RealTek HD manager so I'm not sure what all it shows.

Hi @chadhogan121 Welcome to the HP Support Community! I saw your post regarding the problems with sound only coming out on one side of the headphones. I will be happy to help you with that. Have you tried a different set of headphones to see if the same thing happens? This HP document No Sound from Speaker will show you how to use the built-in Windows troubleshooter. Give that a try.

TOMMYSS,
If you purchased complete care from Dell you can call into Dell Alienware Support at 1 (877) 330-9732. If you did not you can possibly take it back to the store you purchased it from to see if they can help you. You can also try removing it yourself. Just make sure that it is unplugged before attempting to remove it.

Hi Awkwardness2,

Thanks for posting and Welcome to Lenovo Community,

the machine has combo audio jack ,which is 1 socket for the speakers and the microphone
you need to buy a new headphone with combo audio jack or get an adapter to fix this issue

let me know if that fix the issue or not

Alright, so here's the problem. I just recently got this computer and plugged it into the VGA port and the sound wouldn't work. I plugged Logitech External Speakers into it and the computer didn't even acknowledge that it was there. I plugged in Headphones to see if those worked and they didn't aswell. I asked the guy who I got the computer from and he said that it (sound) would work when plugged in using HDMI. So I did that and the sound does work, but only through the TV speakers. It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. So I wen t and grabbed some other speakers I had and tried those and It still didn't recognize the speaker. My question is: How Do I Get My Computer To Recognize My Speakers? Any help would be much appreiciated.

Hi,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

Answer:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

I purchased  a  3.5mm 4 Position TRRS Male to 2x 3 Position TRS Female Headset Splitter Adapter for my hyperx cloud headphones to plug into my XPS 15, except the microphone isn't working when its plugged in.
When I plug them in a window comes up 'which device did you plug in?' Mic in, Line in, Dell Devices (lists random unknown devices to me), Headphones/headset - headphones medium, external speakers - external speakers medium. Are these details correct? should something about the microphone come up also? I go to sound options, recording and it's still using the microphone in the laptop.
I tested the headphones on another laptop without the jack and the microphone on the headset is working great. So it's either the splitter isn't doing it's job... or something to do with the laptop, any ideas?

Answer:XPS 15 9560 Headphone jack function as a mic jack?

Well for your case, the headSET option would be correct, since that means a device that offers both headphones (audio out) and a mic -- but note that you do apparently also have a Mic In option, though this would prevent audio output to the headphones.  However, if selecting the headset option isn't working, the issue with the TRRS "standard" is that it isn't a standard. The industry never agreed on which pins would be used for which connectors (Ground, Mic, Left Audio, Right Audio).  I think Samsung did it one way and Apple did it another, for example, and this of course causes interoperability issues.  So if choosing "headset" isn't working, it's probably because the XPS is expecting Option A and your splitter is wired for Option B.Theoretically, given that the audio chipset allows the pins to be dynamically assigned to various purposes depending on the device that's plugged in, it MIGHT be possible to have a "Headset" and "Headset (Alternate Mode)" device option in order to accommodate both TRRS configurations, but I seem to recall one of the TRRS implementation differences being where the Ground pin was placed, and maybe that pin can't be reassigned simply via software, which might explain the absence of such an option. Sorry!

I'd like to plug my speakers into the back speaker jack and headphones to the front jack. I can't do this and have both work at the same time. I have a cheapo Insight speaker with a volume puck that lets me plug a headphone jack but then the speakers turn off.

Seems to me with front panel and rear panel jacks I should be able to do this but so far, I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Answer:How to configure headphone jack and speak jack together

Depends on the sound card you got. Realtek HD Audio Manager has a Device Advanced Settings option at top right, You can un-tick "Mute rear output ..." and see if it works.

Question: Headphone Jack??

I have a GW M6307 with Vista HP 32bit. The headphone jack has suddenly stopped working.
I have done a restore back to when it was working..uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers without results. The IDT control panel indicates something else is plugged into the jack both for the mic and HP. I also reinstalled the MS audio drivers that came with the machine. I cannot find any default anywhere to change any setting regarding this. The laptop speakers work but the default to HP when plugged in does not. The speakers conitnue to play with no sound in the HP.There are no indications of a loose connection and the laptop sits on a desk most of the time. I realize this could be a hardware failure but it's hard to believe and I know the headphones work with other devices.
Does any know where a default setting exists or how to confirm a hardware failure??

Question: Headphone Jack.

Hey there, I've so I think there must be a problem with my headphone jack, for some reason when I connect my headphone to the jack, I can always only hear on one side of the headphone. I can only hear on both sides when I apply some force to the jack, pushing it to the left and I would have to hold it to that position to get it working properly. I forgot since when I had this problem, but it has been like this for quite some time. and when I plug in the same set of headphones to my phone, it works just fine. I've tried this with 3 different headphones and a pair earphones and the problem still persists, so I'm assuiming it is the jack port that is faulty. I've been okay with having this problem because I would always usually just plug in both headphone and audio jacks in the cpu and insert a pen in between both the jacks, having the headphone jack pushed to the left all the time and making it always work. But just recenly I bought an external kareoke microphone which I planned on using to beatbox with, and when I record and playback, I can only hear from the left side of my headphone. Kinda ticks me off because I've spent a lot of money on my headphones, microphone and microphone jack converter but I still can't get the best out of my products. Plus, I would always switch from speakers to headphones, depending on whether I'm listening to music or gaming. What should I do? :/ (Sorry if I've sent any irrelevant information or my English is bad)

Hey guys,
So I bought a XPS 15 9560 16gig ram, with 512 ssd, i7 FHD screen, it arrived 5 days ago and I loved it, its simply the best laptop ever. However, I am met with a strange issue, my headphone jack is useless, not as in the widespread problem with it but its physically useless, every headphone I tried to plug in, is literally not pluging in, like it will go in and just fall out...
So out of curiousity I took some pictures of the headphone jack and put flashlight next to it to see what is going on, and this is what I got:
Is this suppose to be like this? Am I doing something wrong? or am I right for assuming the worst is that dell didn't physically put a headphone jack assembly in my laptop? Please help.
Thanks, oh and if it is the latter, I'm going to return it and never touch dell ever again, its quite insane how poor the QA is.

I accidentally broke a headphone plug off in the jack of my Gateway NE56R31 laptop. I have tried several different methods of removing it. Would a pair of USB headphones work? I mostly only use headphones when using my laptop. Thank you.

With the plug superglued into the jack, now the only way to fix the issue is with a replacement system board for the laptop. I don't know that USB or Bluetooth headphones would provide sound.

A week or so ago my headphone jack stopped working. Whenever I plug something in Beats does not turn on automatically like it should. I've had it for 6 months and have loved it so far and have been super careful. Of course it has fallen a few times but never from higher than waist high. Are the 3.5 mm jack usually that easily disrupted?

Answer:headphone jack not recognized

Have you tried a different set of headphones?
Have you tried inserting and removing the headphones from the jack repeatedly? Sometimes that will help.

Vista Y 550 ...Headphone jack broken  (was plugged in ,cord tripped over,  outer ring visibly cracked ) ... Wondering if there is a software fix to disable headphone input , while keeping speakers , USB headphone working Interesting note . I've discovered that while resting hand/or even one finger  just to the right of right click button on pad (directly under the ALT key ) I am able to trigger the  "INFORMATION - You just unplugged a device from the audio jack " Messageremoving my hand / finger tells me I have just  "Plugged in a device to the audio jack"  ...I suspect a piece of the headphone jack is loose in there somewhere . A USB headphone works ,but if it gets unplugged it doesn't always work immediately after plugging it back in ...Speakers work if my finger is resting on the sweet spot below the ALT button , but cut out as soon as the machine thinks a headphone has been plugged in  (when I remove my hand from sweet spot ) Any help greatly appreciated ....

Answer:Disable Headphone Jack ?

On some laptops, the headphones jacks comes like a braket (not integrated to motherboard). Maybe you need to open your laptop and unplug this bracket. Best regards.

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

Is there something like that? Thanks.

Hello,On my W520 (4276-37U), my headphone jack suddenly stopped working. The headphone is recognized because all music/sound stop playing from the speaker but everything I hear from the headphone jack is noise. I tested 2 good headphones, both are not working. I hear a noise constantly, music playing or not. Volume control doesn't change anything to the noise output either. Tried to reboot the computer. Tried to reinstall audio driver. Noting is working.I doubt that is an hardware issue.I was listening to music on iTunes, leaved my computer for a few minute, when I came back my iTunes was still playing music but my headphone was only outputting this noise. Any idea? Happened to anybody? Thank you,Martin

So the other day my nephew decided to stick a chopstick in the earphone jack on the family pc and break it off at the tip. Now the broken part is stuck in good and it's not coming out, plain and simple. We don't actually need to use the jack...so no big deal. The problem is that the PC now thinks that something is plugged into the jack so it has cut off the signal to the speakers. Is there a way I can simply disable the front headphone jack so I can restore the audio out signal to the speakers?

Answer:How do I disable headphone jack?

Odd that a wooden chopstick would do that, unless something has been bent and is now shorting. If you take off the case cover you should be able to just disconnect the wire from the jack to the MB.

I have an HP Pavilion and the headphones are not recognized when plugged in, instead sound plays from the laptop's speakers. When I click the sound window the headphones are not even registered under the "playback" tab. I got this laptop around a year ago, and it stopped working after a month. I thought I would wait it out, but this has become a huge inconvenience.

I own an IBM T30 laptop, the headphone jack got damaged, the headphone jack still works if the headpnhone plug is inserted and held in a certain way.
I would like to know how to slide open the headphone, microphone plastic cover.
My goal is to replace the headphone jack if necessary, I have already removed one screw that clearly holds this plastic cover in place but this cover won't budge.
How simple is it to replace the headphone jack on this T30 ?

Thank You !

Answer:T30 headphone jack damaged

Can you solder?.... That will be the only way to replace the jack I am afraid And I would suspect you will have to remove the entire base of the laptop to reach the audio ports, not just one screw.. it just gets worse.... If you really need to you would be best paying to have it repaired at a shop.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC. Over the past few months my headphone jack has not been working properly. It started off with the headphones having to be held in a certain place to prevent sound coming out of the speakers at the same time as the headphones (I have tried every pair of headphones i own) . Over time, this has been getting worse and now, sound comes out of the speakers regardless of whether i have any heaphones plugged in. The headphone jack is really wobbly and i'm assuming i'll need to take my pc to a repair shop? Thanks in advance

i have a laptop computer and made the mistake of using my daughter's headphones. the tip came off of the plug-in part and is stuck inside the hole. any ideas on how i can get it out so i'm not stuck using dora the explorer headphones for the rest of my computer's life?

Answer:Stuck headphone jack

You could try using a paper clip to fish it out (MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF IF YOU START POKING AROUND INSIDE THE SOCKET). Unfortunately the socket is usually surface mounted to the edge of the motherboard. If you are handy with a soldering iron you could probably remove the socket and install a new one. Failing that it's "Dora the Explorer" for you!

The headphone jacks on the front of my case arent giving out any sound. What should I do?

Answer:No sound from headphone jack?

One are you sure you have the jacks set-up right. 2. do you have sound at all if not make sure you have your sound driver installed.

I see that a lot of people have had this problem, and I have been trying to fix it but I am out of ideas. I have a Compaq Presario V3000 and ever since I installed Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, the headphone jack doesn't work. No entry for Headphones shows up in my Playback devices. I am pretty sure it is that my current driver is not compatible with Win7, but is there any other driver that I would be able to use in order to get this to work? The laptop speakers work, however they do not mute. Please let me know if you can help or if you need more info about my hardware. Thanks.

Check HPs website and make sure you have the latest sound drivers and chipset drivers...

Just installed my new Sound Blaster X-gamer the other day and didn't notice a jack for headphones. Is it supposed to have one or do I need the "live-drive" in order to be able to use headphones.

Answer:Headphone jack on SB x-gamer

Is this a CDROM drive? If there in no jack on it, you're probably outta luck. Do you a headphone jack on your speaker you could use?
