Preferred Solution: What is the watchdog error and is there a way to solve it ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: What is the watchdog error and is there a way to solve it ?

A watchdog is a piece of code in Windows that measures the execution time of commands. If a critical command takes too long to execute, Windows will generate this code. It is generally caused by hardware-related issues with critical components such as an SSD or core drivers.

Are you up to date with all of your system's drivers?

Both the above errors have been displayed. My computer has never done this before nor does it do it on any game now except Overwatch. The watchdog error would occur on average once an hour (though I've gone whole gaming sessions without seeing it and I've had it happen 3 times in the same hour). Today, though, the whea error showed up, and this one happened twice in quick succession, so I finally decided to get this damn thing fixed. I originally had 4.9 ghz/core overclock in my quad core with a corresponding voltage and never had a problem. I've lowered my OC and voltage twice now to no avail. What the hell is going on and, more importantly how can I get it to stop doing this so I can play my favorite game in peace? Below is the diagnostic report that was created by the program I downloaded on these forums.

Question: watchdog.sys error

Now and then my PC will get this error. It tends to happen when I use the internet and have internet windows opened. The screen will flicker and if I do happen to close all the windows in time sometimes it will go back to working. However sometimes the entire computer will freeze up and a blue screen will appear for only a second. What I do catch is watchdog.sys before it proceeds to restart the computer.

Answer:watchdog.sys error

I have searched this error in your forum and online and I have no idea how to solve it.
This laptop is new - one week old - and I already get an error- I have no idea why.

I suddenly started to get blue screens yesterday and I have no idea why

Ii used your SF diagnostic tool an I zipped the file and uploaded it here

I would really appreciate if you could help me solve this - please!
BTW sorry if anything I do is against the etiquette here - this is the first time I am using a forum (believe it or not!) i tried to rename the file and upload it but it did not work.

Really looking forward to your response

Late for work, this is gonna be quick....

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [S] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/S] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link:
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

As wireless is mentioned in the dump files, please:
- download a fresh copy of the wireless drivers
- uninstall the current wireless drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hello everyone, I recently bought my HP notebook but it keeps freezing from time to time for a few seconds. If i have observed correctly it happens when I have my headphones plugged in. Today it gave me a DPC watchdog violation error and restarted my computer.
I tried to attach the Memory.dmp file but I cant open it for some reason. It asks me to contact the administrator to obtain permission. I am new to all this and do not no how severe this is. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello, I have a clients laptop that I am working on for them and I see there is a DPC Watchdog Violation Blue Screen that appears often when the computer is restarted and gets to the Windows 10 Lock Screen which then forces the computer to reboot.  I have checked into the issue and see it is related to the Synaptics touchpad driver.  I have gone on this site to download the latest TouchPad driver for this laptop but it's the same one from 6 - 2015 which obviously has the issue.  Is there any way to get a later version?  I tried downloading one directly from Synaptics website but it tells me that it is not the correct touchpad driver (cannot find the synaptics device) when I go to install on the laptop.  I'm stuck and my client is not happy with the way the laptop runs because of this.  HELP!

I am currently getting a B.S.O.D. on my Windows XP SP3 machine. It happens quite randomly....the computer will lockup then suddenly display the BSOD with a 'Watchdog.sys' error.I've updated Windows and updated the Video Driver (from memory I think its a nVidia) to the latest.Any suggestions before I do a complete wipe and reinstall?caso1992

Answer:XP SP3 BSOD Watchdog.sys error

It's usually driver-related but not necessarily the video driver.Any third-party driver could be responsible so re-install or update each one in turn, testing between each driver update to see if the problem re-occurs.

Hey guys,
when starting GTA 5and Battlefield 4 my computer freezes and restarts. Somtimes it shows a BSOD with a "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" error message. The DPC-error also occors randomly from time to time.
I updated all drivers, cleaned up the registry, but no luck so far. I've attached the and SysnativeFile and an HTML-file created with "Bluescreen view" > it hints to something called hal.dll. I don't know what that is and what I should do with that info.
Does anybody know what the problem is and how to solve it?

Hello, I am having a periodic crash in Windows 10. It happens sometimes (can't reliably replicated anything) when I am playing a game or watching a video, it hard locks (video stops, no inputs, sound gets "stuck" buzzing the last .5 second of playback) and sometimes BSODs. When the BSOD screen comes up, it says WATCHDOG_CLOCK_ERROR.
The issue occurs persists after fresh Windows installs so I am worried it's a hardware problem. It never had any trouble when running Windows 7 but I can't definitively connect the problem to Windows 10. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

I recently bought a new monitor, an Acer T232HL. After playing some games, within the first 8 hours of use I got a Blue Screen. I proceeded to get one ever day at night. So far it's happened 3 times (I got the monitor about 3 days ago). I have to note that, it is touchscreen, and it comes with a USB hub on the side. I also have 3 USB-3.0 ports to begin with. However, now one of them is turned off or something, nothing works when plugged into there, and it doesn't show up anywhere. I never bsod before the monitor was in use, so I would at least like to turn the usb port back on.

Hi, My Lenovo Yoga 720 Ideapad is running to "DPC watchdog violation" blue screen error whenever I am connected to internet within 1-2 mins. After repeated restart, I am unable to connect to Wifi as the system is not able to find any networking hardware. I am guessing the blue screen issue is something related to my Network adapter as the issue occurs only when I am trying to connect to Wifi. I have tried downloading the drivers for network adapter from Lenovo site for the 720 Model, but still am running into same issue. Has anyone faced this issue before?

So I have recently bought a new GPU for my pc build, (AMD R9 290), fitted it and installed all the newest drivers since having fitted it the PC keeps on powering down and rebooting. Three times in one night etc. It's not under and load or at any specific point, can do it at idle it just seems to be completely random. Event log says this every time;
"A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Processor ID: 0"

As the GPU was new and a big step up from previous I thought it could possibly be the PSU, so since bought a Corsair 850W psu (over specced) but wanted to make sure it would be okay.
Error is still happening obviously.
I have updated to the latest BIOS from the asus website. I have done a memory check using memtest 86 all fine.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the GPU but still the same problem.
Processor is AMD FX-4170 not over clocked, I just dont know what the problem could be.
I was hoping if any of you guys could shed any light on it.
Any response would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!
(hope it all makes sense I have typed this quickly in fear of it rebooting haha!)
Can upload the mini dumps if that will help.
Thanks guys!

Answer:HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error

Check your voltage that your cpu is getting. This problem occurs between the AMD Northbridge and the cpu. Find out a) What the voltage that the cpu is supposed to be receiving, b) what the actual voltage the cpu is receiving via the BIOS, and c) if the voltage is off either set it to the recommended specs and if that isn't the case edge up the voltage in the BIOS and see if that brings stability.

I recently build a new system and I have been having trouble getting it up and running. I am encountering several issues, but this BSOD is the only one that gives me any information. Here is what is in the system:
New Items:
Intel i5-4690k
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI
CoolerMaster Hyper TX3
Corsair Vengence Pro 8gbx2 DDR3
Rosewill RNX-N250PC2 Wireless N card
Thermaltake TR2 TR700 700W power supply
Thermaltake Commander G41 case
Transcend MTS800 M.2 SSD
Items from older PC:
Asus GTX 670
Various HDDs from older systems, one of which still has Win 8 installed.
Upon boot, I get one of three issues occuring.
1) BSOD with the watchdog timeout error
2) An 0xc000000e error
3) system locks up at Windows logo with spinning ring, just after the start page loads, or while using the system within 5 minutes of startup.
I have tried putting the ram in single and dual channels. I have verified they are in the correct slots with the Gigabyte manual. I have run them one at a time. So, I think if it was memory, both sticks would have to be faulty.
I have tried installing and re-installing windows to the SSD multiple times. The furthest I have gotten was setting up my Windows account. After the following reboot I ALWAYS start getting error 1, and sometimes get error 2 before the Windows load screen. I have tried downloading different copies of Windows online just to make sure I didn't have a bad copy. I figured I could update my license ... Read more

My laptop is freezing up and then crashing about once every night, usually when I'm trying to stream video like youtube or when I'm trying to skype someone. Right before it crashes, a dialog box sometimes pops up warning me that there is a microphone error. However, the microphone is working fine. Then when it blue screens, it always says its due to a watchdog protocol error. This is really frustrating because this has been happening since I purchased the computer two months ago. And I have no idea what could be causing it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:random BSOD watchdog clock out error

A quick search brought up the possibility that you are overclocking.  Are you?  You may be at an unstable voltage.  Have you tried to "Load Bios Defaults" ?  If your not overclocking on purpose?
If you are, you may need to up your voltage but since I don't typically overclock myself or use AMD this may be better left to an overclockin expert.  Go overclockers !

I upgraded yesterday and everything looked okay, but today I keep getting bluescreen with watchdog violation error like every 10 minutes. I don't know if it is win10 bug or I messed something up myself -- today I got some kind of malicious malware after installing some programs, but I'm pretty sure I managed to get rid of it. Anyway it may have something to do with the problem, I don't know. I tried to restore system from the day before, for a moment it looked like it solved my issue but then it restarted with bluescreen again. Will reset of the whole windows help or is something better I can do? I'm considering downgrading as well, but I'm afraid that I will no longer be able to upgrade later on for free.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Moved from a different thread.
Hi all,
I would really appreciate some help solving this BSOD Watchdog Violation error on a month-old Asus laptop (with touchscreen) on Windows 8.1 x64, Intel i7 processor, 8G RAM.
My violation error is not occurring regularly - "seems" to happen when switching tabs in Chrome, but that is probably a coincidence. It did occur once in sleep mode.
I should note that the error occurs only when plugged into a USB hub and has not happened when disconnected. I downloaded the latest driver from Displaylink as directed by Windows when I set it up the first time. However, I've been having a lot of trouble with the touchscreen going out after disconnecting from the hub and have to go into Device Manager to re-enable it. Also, when I open Device Manager, the folder collapses and expands constantly making it difficult to land on anything listed there to change the setting. Pretty weird. Thought I had solved it in power management settings, but it keeps happening. Possibly all of this is related - maybe a driver conflict or something? I'm not uber-techie, just know enough to be dangerous.
Anyhow, I have been trying to set read permissions on my dmp files, but I can't figure out how to enable. My user account should have been set up as admin - I checked the security settings on the folder and I have full access to the folder, sub-folders, and files. However whenever I click the files themselves and try to view, it says Access... Read more

Hi Lolzchicken. Apparently either of the cards are failing.

Display Devices
Card name:
Chip type:
DAC type:
Device Key: Enum\
Display Memory: n/a
Break the crossfire. Remove either card, let only one be there. Uninstall the installed display driver using Display Driver Uninstaller. Then install the CCC 14.4 WHQL only.

If you dont get the regular display back, or it it continues to crash, remove that card and apply the other there, see how it goes.

Question: Solve Backup Error

Using Backup & Restore, this is the third night I got backup errors (red X), but the first time I saw the message.

"Backup failed on shadow copy on source volume got deleted. Might be caused by high write activity on the volume.
retry backup.. Consider increasing shadow copy storage using VSSADMIN resize shadow storage command.
Error code 0x80780169."

Retrying will be futile. Somebody suggested increasing the volume to 15%. There is very little information online.
Any suggestions? Should I increase the volume? I have never gotten this message in the years that I have been using Backup & Restore.

I am just supposed to be backing up my files; not creating an image, unless it copies to the disk regardless of what I choose to send to external drive.

In Event Viewer there were at least a half-dozen messages that the oldest volume was deleted. According to "Manage your space," I think I have one image on the drive and another image in backup, but I don't know if I can trust the info.

Thank you.

These are STOP 0x124 errors - which are generated by the CPU and then reported to Windows. Not very easy to read.

That being said, they are most often related to hardware failures or compatibility issues.

Have you added any new hardware/software recently that might be causing a problem?

Do I wanted to know if anyone can help me to fix the error 0x800f081f Dism/online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth?

Thanks a lot.
Best regards.

Answer:How to solve the error 0x800f081f Dism?

For Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012

To resolve this problem, use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.
Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
Note Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows... Read more

A runtime error is a software or hardware problem that prevents a program from working correctly. Runtime errors might cause you to lose information in the file you're working on, cause errors in the file (corrupt the file) so you can't work with it, or prevent you from using a feature. Unlike stop errors, runtime errors don't typically cause Windows or a program to stop working.
Runtime errors can occur if you are running two software programs that aren't compatible, if your computer has memory problems, or if the computer has been infected with malicious software. If a runtime error keeps occurring, follow these steps:
1. Install the latest updates for Windows and for the program displaying the error. Note that the update for the program might be listed as an optional update on the Windows Update page. Click Start button then show all programs and open Windows Update.
2. Check Action Center for a solution to the program displaying the error.
When you have Windows Error Reporting turned on and a program stops working, a problem report is typically sent to Microsoft for more analysis. If a solution is available, or there are steps you can take to minimize the likelihood of the problem recurring, they'll be available in Action Center. Click to Flag icon in Notification area to open Action Center.
3. Update and run your antivirus software. Windows doesn't come with antivirus software, but Action Center can often monitor the antivirus software that you or your ... Read more

I clicked on Creating media downloaded the iso file to my hard disk and burned it to a dvd.
Then in my pc booted from the dvd in the windows setup i deleted the C: partition and created it again so i don't have any windows to restore back my mistake.
Then i continued entered my windows serial number then it collected files...On the third step it throw this error:
windows could not set the offline locale information. error code : 0x80000001
I don't have a clue what is the proeblem.
I googled some say hard disk failure some say language setup is wrong so i tried to selected uk for time...and keyboard then uk and hebrew since im in Israel.
Then i tried us . In all cases it didn't help same error.
Any ideas what is the problem ? And how to solve it ?
I'm now on my laptop i can download and burn the windows again but how do i know if the problem will not come again ?

Answer:How to solve error: code : 0x80000001 ?

Check the date and time in BIOS setup, make sure it's correct. Also check the Time Zone.

A STOP 0x124 error is an error that's identified by your hardware - which then notifies Windows about it. In most cases it's a hardware failure or an incompatibility.

- check to ensure that your BIOS and drivers are updated to the latest versions
- if you've been inside the case recently - go back in and reseat everything (I got a STOP 0x124 because of this yesterday).
- Run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to see if it pinpoints any possible compatibilty errors (free from here:

The memory dump file(s) will be used to see if there's any other issues, and to see what older drivers are loaded when the crash occurs.

Answer:How to solve a Securityrisk.downldr error?

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Answer:how to solve window xp formatting error...

See response 2 in this - try cleaning the contacts on the ram modules, and making sure the modules are properly seated: a laptop, or netbook, you must remove both its main battery and AC adapter before you do that. For a brand name computer, see the Owner's or User's manual if you need to - how to remove or replace the ram is usually in that - it may already be in your installed programs. If you can't get into Windows, it may be on a disk that came with the computer, or you can go online and look at it or download it - it's in the downloads for your specific model. For a generic desktop computer, see the mboard manual if you need to - how to remove or replace the ram is usually in that. ......Check your hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics.See the latter part of response 1 in this: you don't have a floppy drive, you can get a CD image diagnostic utility from most hard drive manufacturer's web sites, but obviously you would need to make a burned CD, preferably a CD-R for best compatibility, on another computer if you need to.E.g.Seagate's Seatools will test any brand of hard drive.Do the long test. bootable Dos versions of SeaTools can be used even if Windows is not working properly. If the hard drive itself tests okay, any data problems found can be fixed, one way or another.........If the hard drive itself tests okay.........Re-installing Windows... I read about connection 45 & 47 pins to resolve "ide #1 error" and my question...
how change c-sel/slave mode in diffrent way (without connecting pins)?
I just bought liteon dvd-rw drive (sosw-833s 51c) and install into satellite 1410-304 and my laptop don't work with this drive (at startup "ide #1 error", os don't see drive)

Answer:Satellite 1410-304: How to solve IDE #1 error?

I think, there is no other option (i would also not recommend to change the pin assignment).
You should have asked your Servicepartner what drive's are supported on the type of Notebook, he know's about it ..... I'm sorry to say, but you should have a look before you bought the drive.

Hey guys,

like 6 hours ago ....I recently got this message :

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

this came up when I was trying to go into any folder on my desktop documents......and any other folders I have. I can go into My Computer but when I can there I cant get into my documents or my C Drive where I have alot of important stuff which I really need to get into asap.

I was searching through forums on google ......for this type of situation....I found alot of people with the same problem..,....the one I heard that would work is using FixPolicies.exe........but the problem is when I use that I can install it and everything ....but I cant seem to open the folder .....and that Restriction message comes up again when I try to open the folder ....soooo I really dont know what to do......I must figure a way to get into my documents...

Im running on Windows XP ...and yes I am the system adminstator as well...I have scanned my computer ....I had 5 trojans detected.....they have been removed.......

Any HELP!!! would be Great..ASAP ...... in a total jam right now.. ..I hope I dont lose any of the files im my documents.

Answer:Impossible Restriction Error - Need Help How to Solve

Hi studyhard4life and welcome to TSF !

Your restriction issues are probably caused by the trojans or by the fact that you removed them. An antivirus will detect and quarantine infected files but it won't revert the changes those files made to your system. A malware infection rarely comes alone so there are probably remnants or other malwares on your system.

Please follow these 5 steps and read the instructions carefully :
Post and attach your final logs in a new thread in the HJT section. Be patient as that section is very busy, the security analysts will get back to you with specific instructions as soon as they'll have reviewed your logs.

I got this laptop for Christmas and it worked fine. Then i ran a Virus Scan (McAfee, It came with it), Then I shutdown the computer and went to sleep. When I got up I turned it back on and it started up, then it loaded the login screen and says "Incorrect Password" and whatnot. So I clicked OK and tried to login with my password and it doesn't work. I tried several other passwords and no password, But nothing worked. I Also tried Safemode, But it does the same thing. I tried Ophcrack, It just says there is no password.

Please, Someone help me solve this problem without having to lose any data.

I'm a newbie here- excuse me if I don't know all the protocols around here, I'll try to pick them up quickly.

Anyway- here are the details on my PC:

Compaq Presario 5WV280
900 mhz AMD athlon
Windows ME

256 MB RAM
30 GB HD
56k modem

Machine is pretty much as setup from Compaq, except we added 128MB RAM a couple of weeks ago for a total of 256 MB- no problems after that install. We also recently replaced the modem, the original modem died and it was replaced with a Diamond multimedia Supramax 56i PCI that my brother gave me. No problems with that after we got it installed + running.
The problem came up about a week after the modem replacement + RAM install.

I am using Netzero Dialup as my ISP.

The problem I am having is this. My PC is in (what I think is) Safe mode- low resolution display, giving me Error 24 "Display driver error". It tells me that I need to reinstall the display driver, or install an upgraded driver, because the current driver is either damaged or not correctly installed. It then prompts me to the "Installation wizard" to find a better driver- but when I go thru that procedure, it says I already have the best driver installed.

When I try to remove the display driver (thinking it might work to remove + then reinstall), it begins to go thru the process, then the system freezes- every time. I tried the HP/Compaq online tech chat, but they were not very helpful- everything they suggest... Read more

Answer:Display error 24 - unable to solve...

What video card is in the machine? What have you tried? A typical test would be to remove the modem and ram again to see if that works. Optionally, theres a slim chance the video card went bad. If its onboard and using shared memory, I would suspect the ram. If its not onboard, maybe try another card. Problems like this require trial and error of removing hardware until you can narrow down the culprit.
