Question: Yoga (Lock) Function Keys- Help!

I just purchased the Yoga and I need to use Excel all the time for work, which requires constant use of the Function keys 1-12. I want to lock my function keys and I have been going crazy trying to figure out how to do it on Windows 8. I spent about 4 hours trying to do it. Can someone please help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I would like to persistently lock the function keys at my E531 laptop. I know you can switch between function keys and multimedia functions by setting FnLock (Fn+ESC), but unfortunately this setting is volatile: everytime I restart the system (even from power saving mode), it is lost and the keys default to multimedia again. Using this laptop only for "real work", with software that extensively uses the function keys, this is really getting on my nerves...  Is there any way to persistently lock the function keys to generate F1..F12 keycodes? If I'd ever need the multimedia functions, I'll luckily hold down the Fn key before... OS is Windows 8.1. Thanks for any help,Tilmann

Answer:Persistently lock function keys!?

Hi Tilmann,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

To use the function keys to enable the standard functions instead of multimedia functions, go to BIOS by tapping F1 when system starts. Under config tab, go to keyboard/mouse. Change F1-F12 keys to legacy mode. Save and exit BIOS by pressing F10.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello comunity, I have few problems with my new T540p Laptop.  First problem:After rebooting system are multimedia keys active (F1=mute, F2=volume -, etc...) but I need clasic function keys (F1, F2, F3... Unfortunately I am not able to to permanently swap it. I can only pres Fn+Esc - but it is until notebook is rebooted. I read, that there should be possibility to change it in BIOS, but unfortunately I dont have option to change it inmy version of bios. Is there any chance to do it by another way? (Some utility/software/register modification etc?)I am really upset about locking Fn all the time.  Second problem: I nstalled Hotkey Features on my laptop. Everything works fine, but NumLock ON signalization is allways visible. Once I turn off NumLock, it dissapear whitin 5 sec. I believe, that this permanet signalization is becouse of models WITHOUT numeric keyboard, so there was necessary to make this signalization permanent. Is any way, to remove thos signalization? Thanks for your reply.

Answer:T540p - How to set function keys to Standard F1-F12 and Num-Lock signalization

Are you running Win7 or Win8?

For the first problem, BIOS itself should remember the last state of Fn-Lock, and then restore it after shutdown/reboot.  Are you sure you're using latest BIOS?

For the second problem, are you using the latest version of hotkeys?

Dear Lenovo, How can I have both Esc and function keys work normally in Yoga 700? That is, as in any normal computer keyboard where Esc is Esc, and F1 is F1, etc. If I set 'hot key' mode in bios then Esc is normal, but function keys act as hot keys.If I set 'function key' mode in bios then function keys are normal, but Esc is paper display toggle. I don't think it's too much to ask. Best regards.

Just got a new Yoga 910. One thing is driving me crazy -- it appears the function keys by default require pressing the Fn button. I don't use the alternate things like airplane mode and speaker volume as much and would prefer to have function keys primary and then press fn keys for the quick keys. There is mention of reversing the fn key in the bios, but under configuration I have no hotkey option. I'm running bios 2JCN39WW which appears to be the latest. How do I switch the hotkey / function key priority so I can use F4 and F2 without holding the fn button?

Normally I have to hold down the fn key and then a function key in order to do something. For example I need to hold fn and then click F1 if I want to mute the sound. Today all of a sudden, I did not have to hold down the fn key anymore. This means that the ways fn and the function keys interact have switched. I was wondering why this would have happened out of nowhere and if I should be worried? I have looked all over and I definitely have not accessed the BIOS and fn+esc just changes the screen to paper display. How could I have changed the way fn and the function keys have been working?

After about three months of use I have a bunch of problems with my Yoga 3 1470.One of them is that function keys and hot keys setting switches by itself occasionally. So instead of preffered Hot Keys Yoga switches to function keys. I.e Esc becomes Paper Display. Then I need to go to Lenovo settings and switch this over again. In Lenovo settings app options are inverted. When UI shows that Function Keys enabled Yoga has Hot Keys enabled and other way around. This is realy annoying especially when you need to work fast and suddenly Esc button not working or sound buttons become F2 and F3

My Ideapad P500 function keys do things like changing volume and display brightness by default; to make them actually work as F1, F2, ... keys, I need to press Fn key. Any idea how to change that? All I could find on the web was two solutions for Thinkpads:1) BIOS option - no such option on this laptop.2) Some Slim USB wirless keyboard utlility - it doesn't change anything on this laptop. I also messed with KeyTweak and SharpKeys, but without good results. For instance, F1, F2, F3 get remapped fine; but these programs don't see F7 (which toggles flight mode).

Hi! After returning from sleep or lock screen a process called "Thinkpad message receiver for shortcut hot keys" starts using about 30% of the CPU. Temps go upo to 60-70 degrees battery is being depleted quite fast. This process doesn't stop until I end it using task manager. Once ended that way, it doesn't start again even if I use sleep or lock screen. Need help with this! I didn't use to have this problem like a month ago or so. Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Hi, after using Google and searching through forums I'm still stuck with the following problem. For a installation at the Deutsches Museum in Munich I need the Yoga to boot itself at a defined date/time. Shutting down is not the problem, but automatic boot is. Normally there are two ways how to do this- Wake on LAN- Wake on RTC- Wake on Power (if a PC gets connected to a power source it will start automatically) I'm missing those options in the BIOS settings. But maybe I've overread something. Maybe I have to look somewhere else. The only source I found (not yet tested) was https://tinkertry.com/wol-over-usb3 where I have to built my own solution. Anyway, is there any chance to boot the the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro or Yoga 3 Pro at a specific date/time? Best wishes

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hello,

1) i am asking for your help about installing my Fn keys drivers for my Satellite A200 14 D PSAECE laptop.
My OS is Windows XP and i have Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 .
From the download page of Toshiba drivers i got all drivers for my laptop (36 of all - or close), but from the many Xp reinstalations i have done on my laptop, only one time all Fn keys worked when pressing Fn+key and the corresponding icons appeared on my display. I have read some forum topics and i understand there is a problem about the order in which i have to install them ( i already installed them all but it is not working ), so i need someone to tell me which are the drivers for Fn keys only and in which order to install. Please do not forget that i can deactivate my Bitdefender but not uninstall .

2) the same problem with the preset buttons above the keys - On-Off, Internet, Media Player, Play-Stop-Rewind, i need the exact driver and the order.

Thank you for your time :)
Sorry if this question is already answer in the forum somewhere, but i could not get this exact answer.

Answer:Satellite A200-14D PSAECE - Fn keys not working & other function keys

Hi

I remember that the BIOS should be updated to the Win XP version on Satellite A200 series.
There are two different BIOS versions and depending on the installed (Vista or Win XP) the right version should be used.

But there are many FN buttons which needs additional installation of different tools.
For example the Touch Pad On/Off Utility should be installed to use the FN+F9 buttons.

Furthermore you should install the Controls Driver 2.49.2.5C and Controls 3.22.2701 in order to get the Toshiba Control buttons functionality.

Hi everyone i'm new to this forum and I am in desperate need of help. I've had my laptop for about 3 months now and just last month I noticed that the shift key on the left side did not work for some letters. I then noticed that I can't type almost any numbers in word without it doing someother function, for example, some numbers open the save as box, others open the spelling and grammar, others open word search and help options. The same happens even when i'm online. The letter p opens up developer tools, and the number 1 opens up windows help. The number do all kinds of things. The number five is the worst though. It completely refreshes my page and if i'm inputting any info, I have to start all over. I've called sony and talked with about five people and tried all sorts of diagnostic tests. I've restored the computer as well. A service guy came over and changed the keyboard so that's not the problem. It's not the number lock key either so Any suggestions? Please help!!!! So my computer works fine, but for some reason the function keys were switched up. When I'm on the desktop, they don't do anything at all, and when I'm in Google Chrome they do things that aren't related to what they're supposed to do.
F1 used to mute/unmute, now it opens the internet browser and searches Bing for Windows 10 help.
F2 lowered volume, now it doesn't seem to do anything.
F3 raised volume, now it opens the page search on the internet browser.
F4 rewound, now it does nothing.
F5 paused/played, now it refreshes the page.
F6 used to fast-forward, now it functions essentially like a tab key but only for boxes I can type in.
F7 I don't believe had an assigned function, and it still doesn't, so at least that's the same.
F8 I believe used to enter/exit full screen mode, now it does nothing.
F9 used to open inspect page, now it does nothing also.
F10 I have no idea what it used to do, but it doesn't do anything now.
F11 lowered brightness, now it toggles full screen.
F12 raised brightness, now it opens inspect page.

I'm running Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron. Does anyone know a way to re-assign my function keys? I've tried searching through This PC -> Manage and can't seem to find anything.

Answer:Function keys performing the wrong function

F1 for Help, F11 for full screen and so on, those are the normal functions of F keys. On laptops you can use the manufacturer specific alternative functions by pressing and holding down the FN key then pressing preferred F key. In you case I bet that if you press FN + F1 instead of just F1, it works in the way Dell has customized it, as mute / unmute.

(Position of FN key on actual keyboard may vary.)

Most laptops allow user to set default function key action in BIOS / UEFI settings. In your case it sounds that your laptop was earlier set to give Dell specific functions without FN key and normal functions with it, and now it has been changed to give normal standard functions without FN key and Dell specific functions with it.

Hi, Two questions regarding function keys in Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 (may apply to other models): 1. I realized that Fn-B (yes, letter "B") produces a different scan code. Does anybody knows what is it supposed to do? I guess something related to the trackpoint, since it's the closest thing?2. Is there any way for the mute key (Fn-F4) does mute the Bluetooth headset? (guess not) Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry if this seems a silly question, but it is driving me mad!!

Today when I started up my computer (Sony Vaio) the normal numerical keys (the ones at the top, not the number pad at the right) are behaving like the function keys. Numlk is not on. The delete key is also not quite right. The only thing I have done differently is last night a windows update installed. I tried going back to a prior restore point just in case, but it wont restore to a prior point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, hopefully it is a quick thing. I'm using windows 7 home premium.

Thanks

Answer:Numeric keys acting as function keys. Help!

I should add that I have tried reinstalling the keyboard, and using system restore (it says that it wont let the system restore as something is using one of the files i.e. virus software, but I dont have any running - error 0x80070005, but I managed a system restore from safe mode - problem is still there). I have also spent 1 hour on the phone to Sony - who can only suggest a return to factory settings - but I really dont want to have to do that right now).

The numerical keys will still work (see above) I just get the addded options also. The numerical keypad is also behaving oddly, i.e. when I press 1 I get "21".

Is there a way to completely disable the HotKey setting?  I always need access to my F1-F12 keys without having to hit the function button first.  I know how to go into settings and turn on the F1-F12 function, but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the HotKeys altogether.  Every time I shutdown or restart my computer, the F1-F12 setting automatically goes back to the HotKey setting, thus, causing me to go in and change it every time.  Thanks!

Just got this Yoga 3 14 series laptop for cheap from a local shop, and it works great on Windows 10 except for one minor but annoying thing. In the Lenovo settings app, the keyboard settings for switching between F keys and the hot keys being on the function row are reversed. If I set it to have hot keys without FN, it instead does the F row functions without FN.If I set it to have F keys without FN, it instead does the hot key functions without FN. Anyone have this problem before, and is there a fix? Question: Function Lock Key

I have recently bought my Lenovo u410, and I seem to have a problem. The media and f1, f2, f3, and etc. keys are on the same keys, and this is where my problems arise; I play games on the computer and I use f1, f2, f3 keys while playing these said games. Whenever pressing the function keys, it instead recognizes it as a media key, and I'm forced to press Fn + F# and this is quite annoying. This is a Windows 8 computer and the BIOS does not have the setting to turn on Fn Lock and there is no Function Lock key anymore. Help!

Answer:Function Lock Key

Good day and welcome to the community.

Have a quick look at: http://service.lenovo.partner-management.com/content/CoursewarePublic/15415/U310_BIOS.swf
Specifically the Configuration tab and the Hotkey Switch item. I believe that in Legacy Mode this will switch the F keys back to standard F1, F2, etc.

Question: Function Key Lock

To change the brightness on my T430, I need to press the FN key + F8/F9, is there any way to lock the FN key so that if I want to change brightness I just have to press F8/F9? Sorry if this has been asked before but I tried searching to no avail.

Answer:Function Key Lock

'afternoon.

disclaimer: these steps work on my X220. your T430 BIOS screens should be largely similar if not identical.
- boot to your BIOS and select Keyboard/Mouse from the Config menu.
- toggle Fn Key Lock to Enabled.
- save and reboot.

in Windows now, you'll be able to press the Fn key, release, and press the desired Fx key. ie no need for Fn+Fx key combo'ing. by pressing Fn twice it locks the effect for the current Windows session. now, pressing the Fx key does not require any Fn key-press. it just executes the function.

note, though that the Fn key double-press lock effect doesn't survive a system reboot. I haven't tested whether it survives system standby or hibernation.

hth a bit.

Answer:function keys

hi adso53,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Some Laptop Models have the option in the BIOS to Invert the F keys on top
       Try booting into BIOS by
Tapping F2 right after you press the Power to turn it on
You will be booted into BIOS and try going into the Configurations Tab
See if there is any option that says Hotkey.
That's your option. you can disable or enable it to what you prefer.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Why have the function keys been disabled in Windows 7? I know from other threads and tutorials thatthere are ways of getting atthe functions (though not if your laptop is on the old side - my Toshiba Portege can't access the option to show both a display on its screen and a video projector for example). But even a simple things like rename and help, which many programs access via F2 and F1, now don't work.

Seems silly to disable these useful functions.

Answer:Function keys (again)

They aren't "disabled", you need to install the drivers for your laptop that tell windows what the function keys do.

Hi all. I was just given a ThinkCentreA70 for work. The keyboard with it has an Fn key to the right of the function keys. That's fine. However, if I want to use my function keys as function keys (e.g. hitting F1 for help in a program), I have to hit this Fn key before I hit the function key. I use my computer for work, so I don't need these keys to alter my volume, put my computer to sleep, play a CD, etc. I'll never use these keys for this. I'm a programmer, so I use my function keys a lot. In Excel, I use keyboard shortcuts ALL the time (<Alt><F11> to open up the VBE window, <Shift><F11> to insert a new worksheet, etc.). So now instead of a two-key keyboard shortcut, it's a three-key shortcut. Is there a way to disable the Fn key or to alter something on my PC to make the Fn key permanantly pressed (or toggled the inverse of the default)?

If I recall correctly, you first need to hold down the FN key (bottom left). That'll make the F keys operate like you expect them to.

So I changed the shortcut back to none in the properties dialog and F11 still tries to open the afore-mentioned application. Is there somewhere else other than rt-click-properties-shortcut key that I need to change it so that I can have the nifty hotkeys too? Not sure how to explain this abstractly, so I will give an example. If I press the F12 key by itself, it turns off the wireless connection. If I want to actually input "F12," I have to enter fn-F12. What's the procedure for reversing this? I.e., I want to have to enter fn-F12 to turn off the wireless, etc. Isn't there a way to do this in the control panel of Windows 8?

Answer:Function keys and F1, F2, F3, etc.

It probably depends on the make of computer (presumably a laptop?).

There may be a utility provided by the laptop manufacturer, or you may need to get into the machine's BIOS or UEFI settings to change it.

Hello, Today I found out there is a way to lock the Fn key in the BIOS which allows you to control the media keys on the double function F3-F12 keys, I thought this was a great feature and so I enabled it. Unfortunately it seems that I am unable to type as long as Fn lock is enabled, volume control also doesn't work. I have to press Fn twice for the keyboard and volume buttons to start responding again, but then Fn lock is disabled again. Is there a way to have Fn lock function without the rest of the keyboard losing its function? Because right now, using the media keys is more cumbersome than it was before while I thought it should have made it easier. Any suggestions?

Answer:Fn lock function on T430

Hi, erceve

Yes, this should be possible. There are two possible settings for the Fn key: Legacy and Standard. Legacy Mode works in the traditional sense. The secondary key functions become usable when the Fn key is pressed. Standard Mode takes the approach where the Fn key enables the function keys (F1-F12.) In this mode the function keys become the secondary, not the primary, functions. To enable this, I would disable the Fn Key Lock in the BIOS and then boot as normally. When in Windows, hold the Fn key for about ten seconds. A menu should appear that will allow you to switch the Fn key behavior.

Hope it helps,Adam

Tell us what that screen is you are calling "select", please. If it's the Windows Boot Menu screen with the OS, you're way past the POST BIOS operation and the F12 will have no effect. You need to rapidly tap-tap-tap the F12 FN key as the BIOS is coming up, before it gets to the point where it hands over to Windows. Just explain a little more what that screen is. Thanks.

My top row of keys (function) seem to have either stopped working or changed function. Volume keys (F7 - F9) do not work. Brightness keys (F4 - F5) do not operate brightness but bring up the internet search box and page function, battery key (F3) moves cursor to Find field, Wi-Fi on/off (F2) and Screen selection (F1) appears to do nothing. F10 - F12 keys move the cursor around the screen and opens up a toolbar.
All other keys on the top row (other than Function) appear ok.
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Answer:Function keys not working

Should have added Inspiron 1564 Windows & and IE9.  It is not the actual function keys but the HOT keys.

I canīt find the answer on the forum for my issue with my S440. I prefer to use the funtion keys F1-F12 without using the Fn key. It seems like in other models there is an option in the BIOS to change this, but not on my machine. Also the Lenovo software nor Windows configuration seems to be able to change this. Is there anyway to do this? Thanks in advance for your answer!

Answer:S440 Function keys F1-F12 without Fn key

Hi Streup, Simple... On the S440 keyboard if you look at the top-left key.. Esc.. You should see a second label "FnLk" - Function Lock. Press the Fn key and then Esc.  The Fn Key will light up and now the Function Keys are activated. Repeat the same to get the smart keys back. Hope this helpsMark
