Preferred Solution: lenovo Flex 15 backlit keyboard and SSD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Lenovo Flex 2-15 that doesn't have a backlit keyboard. I know that the keybord can be taken off, so can the non-backlit keyboard be replaced by a backlit version. I would have thought it would be possible as someone could request a backlit keyboard part for their laptop maybe? Would the process void the warranty and where can I buy the backlit keyboard replacement?

Does anybody know is Lenovo Plan to bring out an updated keyboard for the Lenovo Flex 15D or Flex Series Ultrabooks? I have had mine now for 2 Weeks and am extremely hapy with its well built construction and its performance however it is missing a crucial peice of technology. A Backlit Keyboard. As Good as the keyboard is and my eyesight for that matter. This machine would seriously benifit from a Back Lit Keyboard. If anyone has any surgestions then please let me know.

I just purchased a flex 15D a noticed that upon start up, there's lighting behind the keyboard, and (being new to PC laptops) it took me two nights to figure out that the only way to turn it on is Fn+space.

Hi everyone, Another question rose tonight, as I wondered why the Intel models (like the Flex 2 14 en 15 without the attached D) were available with optional backlit keyboards, and the AMD models not. That brought me to the question, when they're basically the same model, couldn't i replace my non lit keyboard with one of those shiny premiums the Intel models get? I mean, i don't know if they're for sale yet, but when they will, can I actually build them in and get them working? Please reply with any thoughts

Hi, I received my new flex 3, all is great except one thing the backlit keyboard is not working and i ve been looking for a solution all day. Obviously the fn+space dont work, I'm also not using power saver. I removed the fn lock from bios to retry the fn-space and search for a solution. My final idea is problem with a driver because i removed a few lenovo program at the beginning but there dont seem to have a lenovo driver for the backlit on the site. Please help, I don't want to return it ;p! Thanks in advance Jerome Archambault

Hi, I also have this problem and my biggest issue is that the keyboard backlight didn't work from the second I took the laptop out of the box, which is irritating me a lot. I went on lenovo's settings applicatioon and the software can detect my keypresses on the Fn + space keystrokes and is switching between the backlight modes, but the keyboard is never lighting up. If someone has any solution, please say so because I also don't want to have to send this laptop back

Hi! I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Silver (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-yoga-13-silver-d375124.htm), and while I am quite content with the device, my keyboard stopped working. I was wondering whether any of you might know and suggest an online reseller (official or otherwise), where I could get hold of a replacement keyboard. Now, I suppose backlit keyboard versions of newer Yoga laptops will not work I guess, will they? From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

I bought this lenovo u41-70 laptop 6 days ago. The i5, gt 920m and 256ssd version one. I thought that it might not have a backlit keyboard while buying it but today i was watching some reviews on it and surprisingly those one has the backlit keyboard. I am curious why mine one doesn't?

Answer:Lenovo U41-70 no backlit keyboard

hi masabbin,

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at the keyboard parts (see page 68-71 of the hardware maintenance manual), the U41-70 may come with a normal or backlit type keyboard.

You can easily spot a keyboard with a backiit feature if there's a "crown" like logo on the space bar and if the keyboard lights up on boot-up. You can also manually toggle the keyboard backlights by pressing Fn+Space.

Since your keyboard doesn't have the "crown" like on the spacebar, this means that this unit doesn't have a backlit type keyboard.

If you specifically asked / ordered a U41-70 with a backlit keyboard then you may need to contact the place of purchase  as you definitely received the wrong model (and also to check if it's still possible to exchange the unit).

Hope this information helps.

Regards

Not forgivable since they did the EXACT same thing with the Y40-70 release - stated it had a backlit keyboard standard as it's features and it took 2 months for them to remove that from their website.  Now with the Y40-80 - they highlight the backlit keyboard AGAIN as a standard feature, and AGAIN it's not found on any of them.   Whoever is in charge of product descriptions on the Lenovo website should be terminated.  Not once, but TWICE with the same model system telling customers it has a backlit keyboard when it does not.   Shameful.

Answer:Seriously Lenovo? Y40-80 does not have a backlit keyboard.

Just to make sure, did you press the Fn key and spacebar?

HiI have a z500 laptop without a keyboard backlit.I want to buy a backlit keyboard, how do I install it?Is there such a possibility? What do I need to do this?

Answer:Lenovo z500 backlit keyboard

hi Hensem,

Welcome to the Forums.

Changing the stock non-backlit keyboard to a backlit one is definitely possible.

To change it:
1. You will need a compatible Z500 backlit keyboard (see page 102-109 of the hardware maintenance manual)
    - doing a google search, this item should work as it bares the Sunrex brand with a part #: 25206567
    - Link to picture

2. In removing/replacing the keyboard, you can follow page 33-35 of the hardware maintenance manual or see this video disassembly guide (see FRU Videos) as a reference.

Edit: Added the link for the keyboard

Not likely, even if a backlit keyboard fit, the Mainboard would likely not have the power connectors needed for a backlit keybaord.

Answer:Lenovo Y40-80 Backlit Keyboard Replacement

hi Moaz,

Welcome to the Forums.

I looked into the Y40 specifications sheet and this model doesn't use a backlit type keyboard -- this may explain why you're not able to see any compatible backlit keyboard (technically you will need the top cover since the keyboard is embedded onto it).

In addition, for the backlit feature to work, the following must be met:
1. Compatible backlit-type keyboard
2. The motherboard must have a keyboard data & power connector (for backlight)
    - Link to picture
    - Link to picture

If one of the above is missing / not present, or not applicable then the backlit feature will not work.

Hello,

I was just wondering, as the title says, if it's possible to buy a backlit keyboard from Lenovo or any other place for my laptop? If not possible to buy from Lenovo directly, any other suggestions?

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 500-14IBD (14" screen, to confirm) and I am pretty happy with it for the amount it cost, but ideally it would also have a backlit keyboard. But as this isn't a flag ship or even premium device to an extent this feature is not present - even though backlit keyboards in my opinion shouldn't just be exclusively found in premium devices.

I'm not big on customising computers more than just simple things like upgrading the RAM but I would definitely consider installing a backlit keyboard in this laptop if the installation wasn't too difficult and the keyboard itself isn't too expensive.

Thanks,

Answer:Y500 - Buy a Backlit Keyboard from Lenovo or Anyon...

Unfortunately, each keyboard is usually made for that specific build line. Unless the Yoga 500 14 has a backlit keyboard as an option, you'll be likely unable to find one, unless someone modifies them (which in itself is very difficult due to the thin profile of keyboards nowadays).

First of all the support section on Lenovos website must be the most confusing I've ever experienced. I can't find anywhere to send a simple email asking a question. When I enter my product serial at http://support.lenovo.com/ I cant use either email or chat because for some reason those options are not available for my product!I did try to call them, but they don't understand anything. No technical knowledge. So my last option was to register for this forum and hope someone can help me. I bought mine around 2 years ago, after getting it and setting it up I was unable to turn the keyboard backlit on, went to the seller told them that. They told me that there should be some drivers to install and it should work. I installed all the possible drivers, nothing helped and said myself - oh well... Around a month ago my warranty has ended and an hour ago I decided to look inside, clean it up a bit from dust and stuff. After I took the palmrest off I noticed that the keyboard had two ribbons, blue and brown. After figuring it out a bit I understood that the blue one was for the whole keyboard and the brown was a power supply for the backlit. That is when I thought - maybe the cable was broken since the very first day?  Since no warranty I decided to try something - I cut off the tip of the ribbon cable as in the first picture, then took a razor sharp knife and uncovered the metal at the "new" tip of the cable and tried pluging it in. The outcome: backit is kinda "working". The light is very weak and I cant turn it off, seems something is still not right (maybe the customized cable). Seems like I bought my Laptop with that issue, not the drivers. You can see how weak the light is in the second picture. So the only question to the Lenovo staff  I have is - with the warranty I wouldnt have done that, but since it has expire I did it. This was the manufacturers fault, can I have my keyboard replaced altough warranty expired exactly a month ago (2015/0... Read more

Hello, I purchased a Lenovo Y50 Touch from BestBuy and there seems to be an issue. I also exchanged it for the same model at the same retail store and the issue persists, so either the laptop was designed this way or there was a widespread manufacturer issue and that specific BestBuy location was impacted. The issue is, the backlit is weaker in the middle of the keyboard and it is not due to the angle I'm utilizing the system at. If you look at your system, notice these spaces: The space between the: (apply pressure with your fingers to find out what I'm talking about) 1. E, R, D keys (right in the middle where they all meet, you will feel something underneath in contrast to the rest of the keyboard)2. A, S, Z keys (right in the middle where they all meet, you will feel something underneath in contrast to the rest of the keyboard) Whatever is underneath those spaces, elevates the spacing between the keys, blocking the backlit strength of the Lenovo Y50 keyboard; making it appear that the middle part of the keyboard is weaking than the left and right side. Why is this an issue? 1. Looks uneven2. It feels like it takes less time to press a key in the middle compared to the right/left = awkward typing3. May cause problems in the future So for anyone who has this system, do you see the issue that is being described? I'm a very picky individual when it comes to laptops and backlits. Hi all. So 2 days ago I was using the laptop for some course work, I then went asleep for maybe 2 hours and when I woke up I was unable to use the touchpad or kyboard. Now I had this issue before but it seemed to fix itself after a day or two. So far I have reset the computer while keeping all my own files, updated, deleted, reinstalled the drivers multiple times, removed the keypad to ensure the ribbon wasn't loose etc etc. I have since been able to get the touchpad to work by messing with the drivers but the keyboard remains the same. I oticed I am able to use it when either the laptop is held at an angle or if the screen if opened up almost flat. I'm guessing this is a driver issue but I can't for the life of me figure out how to resolve this. The laptop is a few years old so no warranty. I've done a lot of reading online about this issue and it seems many people have had the same problem but no posts gave me any real solution. Any help is very much appreciated. I relly don't know what to do now.

I noticed with the T500 I purchased there existed some keyboard flex. I got sort of used to it. One of the keys broke (my own doing). I replaced the keyboard from my old T60 (FRU No: 42T3209). Wow! What a huge difference. The old design is superior in every way. It does weigh a little more but the difference in feel and ruggedness make it a much better choice. I am going to order a second 42T3209 keyboard for the T60. If anyone gets annoyed with the keyboard flex, I suggest searching (ebay, parts surplus) for the 42T3209 keyboard. To Lenovo: Please consider the old keyboard design in future models. Thank you.

Answer:Dear Lenovo, keyboard flex ...

I called Lenovo complaining about the same issue on my W500. The first person turned me down but the second rep ordered me a stronger keyboard, shipped next day air, 100% free-of-charge.

Hello, I have a Lenovo flex 2 14 coming in from France which is fine except it comes with an azerty keyboard. Basically what I want to know is if I buy lets say the flex 15 keyboard, would the size of the keys measure to be the same size as the flex 14 keys (for example the A key on the flex 14 and the A key on the flex 15 will they be the same measurements and would the key fit?). I also want to know if I bought the older flex 14 keyboard if that would fit in the flex 2 14. thanks for any answers.

Hi everybody I am new in this forum. I have a new Flex 2 14 since some days and I am trying to figure out how the keyboard works. I used to work with one Mac and typing characters was pretty easy.. what appears just on the keys ti will be typed when I write. Now with my new  Flex 2 it doesn't seem to work like that anymore. I have some blue keys that work when the keyboard is set as English Canadian multilingual.. others that don't write at all what is written on them.. (example the blue key give me the " " when i type on it, and I found by chance how to type the " " character). Yesterday while I was writing an e-mail I needed to type the " " but I wasn't able to find the key equivalent on the keyboard so I had to use the touchscreen keyboard to get right my " ". Another time I was looking to insert the " [ " brackets but I had to change the language on my keyboard from " English Canadian" to "English US" to get them. Can I make my typing easier? Is there any way to get all the basic symbols on my keyboard without switching language or using the touchscreen keyboard?I would like to make faster writing as I was used to do with my Mac. I looked for instructions but nothing is specified. Thank you for your help

I have been in the market for a new laptop and decided to go with the Lenovo Flex 3 (which I didn't even know existed until a few days ago). It is so new that the only place that actually sells it is Lenovo.com. I got the one with the highest specs on sale. If you look on Flex 3 (15") | Affordable, Thin, & Light Multimode Laptop| Lenovo US you will notice something strange though. The keyboard for the i7 model is "Backlight French-English". None of the other ones are like that. The others all say "Backlight English".
I asked someone at Lenovo what that meant because I was concerned that it wasn't in QWERTY format. They said (and im not sure I believe them) that it only meant that some of the keys have French characters underneath them. The keys should be in the same spot. When I looked up images of French-English keyboards, a lot of them have 2 characters on EVERY key. It looks like the keyboard can either be in French or English mode, but it also looks confusing because the characters are the same size.
I asked Lenovo why the heck they would make 1 model that comes with a weird keyboard and every other model doesn't, and they didn't have an answer. I haven't received the laptop yet but im a little nervous as to what to expect. I love the specs and the design of the laptop, but if the keyboard is a jumbled mess of characters then I may regret my purchase. I don't look at the keyboard to type, but I still feel like it could be very confusing.
Has anyone seen a French-Engl... Read more

Answer:Lenovo Flex 3 keyboard is weird

If you'd like to see the keyboard up close, here is an image of what Lenovo does with French-English Keyboards. This is NOT a photo of the Flex 3, but of an older model laptop that they used a French-English keyboard. It may give you an idea of what one might look like. It basically makes it easier to enter French accent characters.

I just purchased a Lenovo Y50 UHD about a week ago, and the keyboard has been really bugging me. All the keys in the near vicinity of the 'G' and 'H' key in the center of the keyboard for some reason trigger a weird flex/trampoline style effect, which is very noticeable compared to keys near the edge of the keyboard (Tab, Q, number pad, etc.) I'm not sure if this is something that is prevalent in all models of the Y50 or Y50 UHD so it'd be great if i got some feedback from other owners. I'm definitely considering returning if this is a common problem. Thanks.

I spilled water on my laptop a few days ago. My screen was fine at first, but then (I assume) water got into some part of the hardware. Now the display is barely visible. I think it could be the inverter board that was affected, but I want to know how to fix it/what part(s) I need.In addition, my keyboard doesn't work. The touchscreen keyboard doesn't work either. I can tap on the keys, but nothing shows up. What is affected so that I can't even use the touchscreen keyboard? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Water spilled into a laptop can cause a variety of problems as well as short  circuits.  It would be difficult to pin point exactly where your problems lie.  I suspect though that laptop isn't thoroughly dried out yet which maybe part of the problem.  I would suggest you open it up and let it continue to dry out, before proceeding further.  For your reference here is a link to your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual.......

Right now I have a problem with the w key on my laptop key board.  For all the other keys it registers a press when you feel the key give way.  However for my w key you do not have to press it, only rest you finger lightly on it and it will register a keystroke.  This is a problem for me because I rest my finger on W S and E all at the same time which leads to a lot of random w's throughout my typing.  Let me know if there is anything I can do other than replace my keyboard.

Answer:Lenovo Flex 3 1580 Keyboard problem

Hi 18jadietrich,

Greetings.

Try if you have the same issue using an external USB keyboard.

As the way described seems to be mechanical in nature and may need hardware servicing.
If your warranty is still active, best to call in technical support to avoid voiding warranty.

Users are not required to do manual troubleshooting other than checking if the W key is cleared from foreign materials causing this using compressed air cans.

Hope this help answer your query.

I am going to try flash the bios with a backlit model and see if it works.   Lenovo reps say that it isn't possible and that a backlit option needs to be specified in a factory order. I have my doubts. They people have a script to "troubleshoot, "I can't imagine that there is any money to be saved in having two assembly lines, or a branch in assembly line with for this option.  For the extra costs in two assembly lines, it is cheaper to solve the issue with code. They are LED lights, so it doesn't require a special high voltage power supply.

Answer:Can I Upgrade a T430 Keyboard from non-backlit to backlit?

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Yes. You can interchange your non-backlit keyboard with the backlit version of the keyboard in your Lenovo ThinkPad T430. Backlit and Non-backlit version uses the same connector, therefore they can be interchanged without any problem.

Refer this document and choose the FRU number in your preferred language format.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Answer:Can I replace my non backlit keyboard with a backlit keyboar...

OK here is the Service Manual: Manual The keyboards are not sold by HP as a separate part: only sold with the whole top cover. See p. 20 The Manual does not list any keyboard/top cover as having a backlight. However, the keyboard map on p. 15 shows the f5 action key as activating a backlight on "select models".  From this I gather that there is a place on the motherboard to connect a backlight cable if the keyboard has one. However, extracting the old keyboard from the top cover and replacing it with just the replacement keyboard is not easy and there are no directions in the Manual for that procedure. I would want to see one of these alleged backlit keyboards. Bottom line, it is possible, but I would be leery. Do you have an f5 action key with the backlight symbol on it? Have you tried it to see if maybe your keyboard is backlit? If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I just got a T470. Excellent computer! I got the Core i7-7600U model with 4gb of memory and a 500gb non-SSD hard disk (T470 20HDCTO1WW, ordered directly from Lenovo). The 2TB SSD and 32GB RAM I got from Crucial work without problem (yes, I ran a memory tester) ? although, yes, it?s a moderate pain to take off the back panel (even if you have a special plastic tool for doing so). It?s a really great laptop; I like how clear and bright the display is as well as how fast it runs. That said, on to my question: I got the model with the non-backlit keyboard. Is is possible to upgrade this model to have a backlit keyboard? Here is the information I have gotten from my research: * The dealers selling T470 backlit keyboards warn that it may not be possible to get the backlight to work if the motherboard does not support it (for example, https://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-01AX569-SN20L72890-Backlit-Keyboard/dp/B0727S1H14/ where they claim ?Please check whether your laptop can support backlit keyboard or not before placing the order, if can not, the backlit function of our keyboard will not work!? or https://www.amazon.com/CHNASAWE-Replacement-Backlit-Keyboard-Thinkpad/dp/B071KWWW21/ with a similar ?If your original/old keyboard does not have the backlit, this keyboard backlit will not work.? warning) * There is nothing in Lenovo?s T470 service manual at https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/pubs/t470/html_en/index_en.html#Replacing_t... I have a 840 G1 laptop which appears to not have a backlit display.  There is no option in the BIOS for configuring the time delay as there are in others we have. Can I just replace the non-backlit keyboard 730794-xx1 with a backlit one 731179-xx1?Will the option to configure the delay then show in the BIOS?Do I need to do anything else? The service manual does not appear to cover the change as opposed tot he replacement.

Dear Sirs, first of all I am from Bucharest, Romania, EU.When I launch the "On Screen Keyboard" meaning the touch keyboard from the screen/display on my Lenovo Flex 2-14, from the icon (keyboard sign) situated on the bottom right of the screen, first any letter I touch, instantly the "On Screen Keyboard" became frozen - NO commands and TO close it is not working - it remains on the screen - the entire botom half of the screen.I tried to close it from the Windows Task Manager but... I do not know the name of the running process for the "On Screen Keyboard".It seems al my drivers are up to date. Every time hapened, the only solution I found was to RESTART the notebook. Can one of you or form the Lenovo specialists to help me, please? Please see the enclosed picture. I have a LeNovo Flex 3 1480 [80R3] for about a year with zero problems. The only modded thing is a Sandisk 480gb SSD drive, with a Windows 10 installation from scratch, installed in the very first day I bought this machine. I was running Windows 10 version 1607 normally, and really enjoying this machine, but since last week when I was booting up, the machine freezed at bootscreen (the one with the lenovo logo) and then restarted showing the message "Preparing Automatic Repair" that took almost a whole day to pass. The repair never happened and I had to use the option to reset windows maintaining my personal files. After this everytime I boot up, windows 10 take up to 10 minutes to boot, and my keyboard and touchpad won't work, leaving me with only the touchscreen option. I've been through a lot of different solutions attempts:- Upgraded BIOS to the latest version (Lenovo colored logo at bootscreen)- Uninstalled KB and Touchpad drivers manually and reinstalled with Lenovo provided drivers, and also repeated the procedure with Windows Update drivers.- Disabled the fast startup option- Done the 15s procedure with the power button- Deattached the battery plug for some minutes and reattached- Checked (unplug and replug) both KB and Touchpad flatwires- Reinstalled the latest Windows 10 version 1703 from scratch None of the solution mentioned above worked for me. KB works perfectly in BIOS, and even when booting up I can change de backlight settings usi... Answer:LeNovo Flex 3 1480 - Keyboard and touchpad issue after Windows 10 boot up

Adding some info after some new research. Will try other 2 slightly different options:1) 15s power button trick with battery and charger unplugged2) Installation of LeNovo provided Intel ME drivers, read some info that it might interfere at the keyboard and mice functionality. Actually I'm running Windows chipset provided drivers. But still in doubt, which available driver should I install? There are 2 available.1) Intel ME Driver 63.6 MB Windows 10 (64-bit) 11.0.0.1176 - Release 30/8/20162) Intel Management Engine Interface Driver 81.5 MB Windows 10 (64-bit) 11.6.0.1015 - Release 29/11/20163) Both drivers, in release date/version ascending order.

Hello, My parents have owned a Lenovo laptop for a couple of years now. However, recently this issue showed up and I wondered whether there is a chance there is a solution to this problem which I could try myself, since the laptop its warranty already expired. If I recall correctly, the model of the laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 2, running Windows 10. So here is the issue; the laptop has issues turning on. Oddly enough, it is not a very consistent issue. Eventually, the laptop does turn on. The problem is that this sometimes takes hours, other times the laptop appears to be able to boot instantly as it normally would. I have no idea what affects this. When pressing the power button, the keyboard backlight starts flashing. It does this until the laptop completely boots, and as I said, the amount of time this takes varies. I already tried looking for solutions on different forums, but they usually concern the issue where the keyboard backlight flashed and the laptop simply will not boot at all, which is not the case here, as it eventually does but often it takes a while.Other solutions suggested a certain amount of flashes meant a certain issue or failure. Problem here is that the amount of flashes seem to be random, so it is not as if it just keeps looping a certain amount of flashes as it varies. This leaves me puzzled as to what could be the culprit. I am not sure what to do, especially since I have not owned a Windows-based machine in a whi... Read more

Hi itsasin,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number or MTM to verify the model (you can also get from here)?

Isolating the point of failure may be necessary to determine if the delay on start up is a power issue or a boot problem.
Try removing the harddrive so we can test if the machine can power faster.
You can download the hardware manual from the support website for removal guide.

Update us how it goes.

Regards
