Preferred Solution: Lenovo G770 grinding fan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have a Lenovo G770 20089 laptop. Could you please tell me if my laptop supports UEFI? And if yes, please help me find the UEFI options (for example, enable/disable) in the BIOS because they do not seem to show up anywhere (in the latest BIOS offered on the Lenovo site for this laptop, which is version 3.10). Thank you very much.

I got Lenovo G770 (i5 @ 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, Radeon 6670m 1GB, Kingston SSD 120GB); last 2 weeks, when battery is in and plugged in for charging, power button and all LED indicators stat blinking simultaneously (no apps interruptions, freezing, blue screens, restarting etc). I repeat, it happens ONLY when both battery is in and power is plugged. When works on battery only or only with adapter, there's no issue. At Lenovo support they gave me no answer. What could be a problem, battery, power adapter, DC jack or something else?

Answer:Lenovo G770 problem!!!!

Sounds like its struggling to charge the battery.
Remove battery and clean battery contacts on battery and laptop.
Also try

Turn off the computer,
Take the battery out
Take out the power supply
Push the power button down for 30 seconds.
Reconnect power supply
Then the battery.

sometimes the mother board gets static and this clears it.

Hey guys, could anybody recommend me a decent cooler (that is powered by USB if possible) suitable for a Lenovo G770? I don't mind spending a bit but not TOO much. I'm not even 100% sure if this model is known for overheating but I used my old laptop on things like the bed and carpet alot and this caused alot of overheating issues - putting off using my new Lenovo at the moment until I sort a cooler for it. If it makes a difference from what i've read on the rare times they overheat (when doing alot of multitasking) it seems to be on the left side. I've been having trouble finding a cooler big enough (17.3") that has good reviews Also, for the price, do you think my new laptop is a good buy? I'm no computer expert but I think the specs are good for the price and I know it's only an i3-2330M (what are peoples opinions on said processor) but my laptop use doesn't tend to be very CPU intensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers

Answer:Cooling my new Lenovo G770

Most laptop coolers work by elevating the laptop and letting air circulation to cool the underside of the laptop. Some use fans, some have no fans (known as passive cooling).
However, any of the traditional coolers will be problematic on a bed/carpet/anything maliable.
If you were to get a cooler and then right under that cooler was a blanket, or a comforter, the air circulation would be lost. Instead of air being under the cooler, there would be a heat insulating material.
To keep a laptop cool, use it on a flat, hard surface. Avoid soft surfaces such as blankets, beds, pillows, couches, etc. And especially, don't put the laptop on your lap. It sounds silly, but consider how poor the ventilation of a laptop is as opposed to a desktop. Pair that with the fact that your body actively produces heat, and you are just asking for a laptop to overheat.
I would give this cooler a try.

Hey guys! I bought a Lenovo G770 some 6 months ago and had no problems with it. Today, I was just checking my mail and such, and went to shower. The laptop was turned on, with the internet online, on the user selection screen. It was not plugged in for charging. When I came back, the screen was off and the 2nd (battery?) light was on with a red color. I tapped some keys so the screen activates but it didn't. I plugged the laptop to charge, and the light flickered. It soon became white, and still flickered. I turned it off and on a few times but it never turned the screen on. Now, when I turn it on, I hear a clicky sound and a second later the laptop shuts down. The screen doesn't show anything. Any info? Cheers!

Hi, I'm really interested in the G770 as my new laptop and I'm wondering if anyone can confirm it being able to take 16GB of RAM? The specs say a maximum of 8 but there are websites selling two sticks of 8GB saying it can handle up to 16GB. Also I'm curious if the video card on the Radeon model is one of those MXM video cards that you can remove and upgrade in the future? Thank you all.

Hello everybody, first time posting here. I've bought the Lenovo Essential (or Ideapad in some countries, including mine) g770 and so far i am satisfied with my choice. However for the second time the last two weeks i've come across a bluescreen crash. The error report is as follows: Problem signature:Problem Event Name: BlueScreenOS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3Locale ID: 1032Additional information about the problem:BCCode: 4aBCP1: 00000000772F138ABCP2: 0000000000000002BCP3: 0000000000000000BCP4: FFFFF88003A1BB60OS Version: 6_1_7601Service Pack: 1_0Product: 768_1Files that help describe the problem:C:\Windows\Minidump\070912-24601-01.dmpC:\Windows\Temp\WER-48297-0.sysdata.xml Both bluescreens happened while talking on skype, having google chrome on aswell. The second time, after the bluescreen, i entered safe mode and ran a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-malware and then restarted in normal mode and ran a scan with Bitdefender antivirus plus 2013 with no results whatsoever. I dont know if there was a point to do these scans in the first place but i did it anyway just to be safe. If there is any way to find out the reason behind these bluescreens i would like to know since i have no special knowlege around these stuff. Thank you in advance.

I recently purchased a lenovo G770.  I received it yesterday.  I went through the initial setup, downloaded and installed all the updates, and it appeared to be working fine.  However, when I press 'shut down' it logs off and displays the shutting down message as expected and eventually the screen goes black but it does not appear to shut down completely.  The three of the four lights in the front of the laptop remain lit and I can hear the fan and the hard drive still working.  The only way to shut it down completely is by holding down the power button for approximately 5 seconds.  I'm really disappointed because I had high expectations for this laptop but if I'm unable to diagnose the problem and fix it I will have to return it.  If anyone knows something of this issue or can offer advice on how to fix it I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You in advance,VK

I got this laptop in May, and although it worked fine at first it started having problems around a month after I got it. First of all it makes buzzing sounds a lot of the time when watching videos, listening to music or even just using websites. When I put it on sleep and start it back up, it says 'Windows can not come out of hibernation mode', although it starts up ok after i just press 'Continue'.One time a few months ago I installed windows updates, but then everytime I started up the computer it would be extremely slow. I noticed it had the windows update icon in the 'Shut down' button and I tried re-doing it a couple times, but it seemed to just install the same updates everytime and freeze again. I turned off automatic updates and for a while, it worked a lot faster and seemed to be ok. Recently it has had a lot of problems, start up takes a very long time. After logging in, the screen is blank for a few minutes with nothing but a cursor. Then after a while my desktop shows up but all the icons are white for a while and take a long time to load up. I can't start anything as it freezes.I tried installing windows updates (it included new drivers such as one for the display, which I thought would solve the problem) but after that it started up with a very small screen resolution and would just not start at all after logging in. I un did the updates but now I have the same problems with very slow startup, screen going blank, computer freezing randomly and buzzing s... Read more

I know this is a somewhat bad idea. But my warranty has expired, and I think I could use a better CPU. I have a Lenovo G770 (20089). I think, my chipset is: Intel HM65 (05) and I'm looking at some quad-core replacement. My current i5 2430M has 2 cores, and 4 threads running at 2.40Ghz along side Intel HD3000 and AMD Radeon 6650M.  In the datasheet for this model, I've seen it can go up to i7 - 2620, but that's a dual core cpu as well.  So my question is, can it be done, are there any quad core cpus I can install, and does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this topic?

Hey Guys, Just going to share my latest experience with Lenovo.  Long time Lenovo customer here and quite frustrated... In June I ordered a y560P and had an absolute nightmare trying to get a problem diagnosed and fixed in a reasonable time period, that I noticed shortly after purchase.  Took about 6 weeks for it to be repaired properly.   Fast forward to Novemeber.  My parents are looking for a new computer.  I wait until Black Friday so I can get the best dea for theml.  I find a G770 (i5, 6GB RAM, 750GB HD) and make the purchase.  2 weeks later the computer arrives, or at least what I thought was the computer.  Turns out lenovo shipped the wrong one.  No problem, it happens.  I call in right away and make arrangements for the actual model to be sent out.  2 weeks later it arrives.  Right model, but the soundcard is defective.  I call into customer service, express my frustration and am told a rep from Customer Relations in NC will call me back to facilitate this situation.  I get a call from this rep, who expresses shes she's quite concerned and that she will have a new computer sent out, and this time I could send the defective one back after receiving the new one (this way my parents still have something to use in the meantime, as everything works on this current model except audio).  This is the first week on January.  I was told the computer would ship in in the next couple d... Hello, I've recently formatted my G770 with Windows 7 x64 and installed all drivers and Windows updates - yet it is incredibly slow. It takes a good minute for it to boot and the process does not seem right. It starts off with the initial boot options to enter setup / BIOS and then after 2 seconds the black Windows boot screen shows then after some time it goes black for a while and then it shows the Windows boot screen saying 'Wait a moment' and then it enters the Windows desktop. I believe I had this issue as well when I first got it but I think I somehow manged to fix it, if I remember correctly, but I can't remember how as it was long ago.  Anyways, the reason for the format is that the old HDD died, I think, all of a sudden and Windows wouldn't boot up saying there was some I/O errors. When I swapped it out with another HDD it booted up so I figured the old HDD really just died. Now this HDD is much smaller and this post seems to indicate that the G770 is not compatible with HDD smaller than ~200 GB. Is this true and if so why and how? //brk

Answer:Lenovo G770 slow boot

hi brk,

The Size should not affect the Performance of the Drive. Unless the Drive is almost full due it's small capacity.
Few things you can try:

BIOS has Quick boot option under Startup or boot TAB, Make sure that quick boot is enabled. This should disable the boot selection when you turn on the computer.
Disable Start up items that are not necessary.
Disable Services that are not necessary.
Try Disabling or Enabling the Fast startup

Let me know your findings.

Hello All;Before purchasing the system that I have, I did a lot of research, and found out that the motherboard that comes with this system will go up to 16Gb of RAM.Once I received the system, I inserted both 8GB RAM sticks and booted the computer.Windows 7 recognized all the memory, and posted it as having 16Gb of RAM.Adobe Applications, such as Photoshop and After Effects, as well as Sony Vegas, all utilized all 16Gb of Ram.However, the system would crash with RAM related memory dumps.I rebooted the system and went into the BIOS (Of which is InsydeH20), and I saw that the BIOSwas reading my Memory as 6Gb, instead of the 16Gb that I have installed. Therefore, I performed the following test.I removed both sticks of 8Gb, and put in the original 6Gb that came with the system.1x4gb1x2Gbbooted into the BIOS, and it showed the 6Gb of RAM accurately. Then, I removed both of them Stick, and then inserted a single 8Gb stick, and left the other slot emptyBooted into the BIOS, and Wa-LA, it read it as 8Gb of memory.I added in the 2Gb stick into the other available slot, making it 10Gb total and booted into the BIOS, and it read it as 1Gb of installed RAM.So.In conclusion. This system will handle 16gb of RAM.However, without the BIOS recognizing all the available Memory, I cannot run all 16Gb of ram as it will cause memory dumps and other related issues, as I have been told on several different Memory related forums, as well as talking with the people from Crucial memory. So, I currently a... Last night I closed my laptop without turning it off. I do this often and it's been a year now and it works fine until this morning. I opened it and with the battery in I turned it on. The power button didn't turn on, the laptop wouldn't start. I tried removing battery and keeping in the ac plug. Didn't work. I tried putting in the battery and plugging it with the ac plug and it still doesn't work. I notice that when the battery is in, and the ac plug is attached, it shows that the laptop is charging. Removing the battery while the plug is in makes the charging light disappear. So I kept the battery in and the wire as well, and after 15 minutes it started after I pressed the button. Tonight it did the same thing and wouldn't start again. I looked online with m phone and found this site. Someone suggested holding it down for 10 seconds 5 times and plug the ac plug in and it should work, but it did. Any suggestions or solutions. It's finals week, and my exam is tomorrow. Any help before that would be great. Thanks!

Answer:Help! G770 Lenovo laptop won't turn on.

hi Jmv,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
If you're not hearing any beeping noise comming out from the computer, you could try to:
1. Re-seat the RAM (you can find more info on page 44 on the Hardware Maintenance manual here). If you have 2 RAM modules, you will need to remove one & leave one RAM module in and try turning the computer ON (you're trying to test if one of the RAM chips are defective). Note: You will need to take out the battery and HDD first before you can access the RAM slot.

Caution:
Please be very careful in disassembling your computer as the internal parts are fragile.

If re-seating the RAM module(s) doesn't work, you may need to contact Lenovo Technical Support for service. Lenovo Support Phone List here.

Hope this helps.

Hi all, need a bit of advice. First of all, just a bit of background information: I was working away one night doing some word processing and shut my laptop down for the night, turned it back on the next morning to be greeted by a start-up repair loop, I tried various things to repair this i.e. restoring system, software, security etc., running chkdsk, bootrec, etc. and nothing - OneKey Recovery would also not work. It told me something along the lines of a partition had been changed, when I have never modified the partitions on my laptop. Long story short, nothing would work and so I have had to do a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium and this removed all of the partitions in the process - I have reinstalled all of my drivers so the sound, ports etc. are all working but of course now everything is going to be on the C: drive. Is there a way I can set it up how it used to be with a separate drive for the system and to get the recovery drive back? I am cautious about having everything on C:, even though I make backups of all my important files. A step-by-step tutorial would be great, I managed to recover my important documents through xcopy however I am no computer expert. Thank you for your time.

Re: G770-1037 I am going to mention a few notes for anyone else who is thinking about servicing an out-of-warranty system, I am not A+ certified however I am an engineer and I have worked in several Tech/ID positions. I have repaired many laptops and I have never left one worse than it was when I got it. I appreciate that this manual is available, but there is some important information missing.http://download.lenovo.com/UserFiles/UserGuide/en/User's%20guides%20and%20manuals/G770/Lenovo%20G770... To remove the keyboard, there are some little metal springs along the top and sides of the keyboard that need to be pressed away from the keyboard before lifting the top of it. (after removing the three back screws) I also ended up putting a folded piece of paper towel over the keyboard connector to help hold it in place (the black piece of this poorly designed connector folds up and does not stay down) Most of the screws are 2.5x8mm and black in color, there are 4 flat smaller-dia ones above the battery and 2 even smaller ones above the DVD/BR. HDD, internal screen hinges, and maybe a few others are silver/metal in color. I have two short black ones which I do not remember removing... kudoes to anyone who can figure out where they came from.I know that the thread-locker is not 100% effective, and I don't mind tightening the screws on a device occasionally. However this is the first laptop (or general device) that simply fell apart on me so quickly, the left hinge... Read more

Hi, I have G770 and noticed yesterday that power button and all four LED indicators are blinking at regular intervals. It happens when the battery is in the machine + it's plugged in. Battery was almost empty, I've plugged it in to charging, after 2-3 minutes, this blinking is repeated. Unplugged, plugged again, nothing has changed. In power management, all is set to full charging ('Optimize the battery lifetime'). Is that up to battery or....? Thanks

Contrary to everyone else's problems here my fans just not seem to be working anymore or something. I have switchable graphics with an integrated Intel and an AMD 1gb dedicated graphics card. When I switch to "high Performance" my lap top gets so hot, around 91 degrees Celsius. But when I switch to Power saving it stays a bit cooler. The trick is that I don't even hear my fans working most of the time. While playing SC2, a few times I've heard the fan go off(pretty noisy) and it cooled my computer off really fast. But most of the times it just builds up the temperature and becomes choppy as hell. I don;t remember it being this bad at first, but it seems that it has some kind of an issue now. Pleae help, I'll try to download the latest drivers now, but I think I've already done that.

When IE9 was first released it caused major problems (BSOD's) with the G770 laptops. There were many online notifications from reputable sources strongly recommending not to install IE9 on my G770 laptop. Previous windows updates had the IE9 installation unchecked so it would not automatically install. However, the most recent WIN update has IE9 checked to automatically install it.
Does anyone know if the compatibility issue has been resolved so that its now safe to install IE9 on my laptop?

I just purchased my G770. And my sound having ugly freezes and weird noises started as soon as it was out of the box. After reading all these complaints about the sound issue, and the practical inability to resolve it, I am really sad I purchased a Lenovo. It is my first one. I know that usually the people who are happy never really say anything, but these unresolved complaints are discouraging. I feel as if I have to live with it. I cannot go weeks without my laptop as I use it for school...
Does anyone have a better suggestion for me? Should I even bother trying to get it fixed? Should I call? I feel lost and doomed....

Hello, I've recently purchased a new Lenovo G770 machine and after a while began to experience problems with the ATI display driver that kept triggering blue screens (BSODs) and black screen freezes with the well known message 'the ATI display driver stopped working and has recovered successfully'. My system is the CORE i5, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD and dual graphics version (ATI Radeon HD 6650M and Intel 3000). I have the latest drivers from the Lenovo support site, so the 'do you have the latest driver version' question is pointless. The most recent driver for the ATI Radeon from Lenovo is the one dated April 15th 2011!!! Did anyone else come across this problem? I'm not really keen on exchaning my laptop or sending it to service without a little research and DIY. So, anyone, Lenovo, HELP? Much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi!So i have G770 notebook and i cant remove hard drive password. I know the password but i want to turn it off. In Bios cant enter set up hard drive pass tab.Cheers

Answer:Lenovo G770 hard drive security

Hi Marin,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

The hard disk password is actually stored in the disk's firmware? re-flashing the notebook's BIOS would not help.
You must remove your password at the password prompt that appears when you turn on the computer. To remove the password, at the prompt: Enter your current password, press the Spacebar and then press Enter.

You can also refer to this link.

Hi, I've damaged the screen of my Lenovo G770 (operating Windows 7) to the point where you can view nothing on the screen. I want to connect my laptop to an external device (TV), and have read that you can use the FN button plus the relevent F# key, which in my case is F3. I have plugged the laptop via HDMI to the TV, however the shortcut for changing to an external monitor is not working. I have also tried pressing the windows button and P. I suspect this isn't working as my laptop is at the log in screen and I am obviously not logged in. When turning on my laptop does not auto-snap to the text box for typing in your password, so I have to manually click on this, which is a problem when I can't see anything on screen. So two questions;1) is there any other way I can connect the laptop to an external device,2) is there any way of logging in without having to enter my password. Thanks in advance,Sam

Answer:Windows 7 reinstall problem on Lenovo G770

 Hi crumdub12,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The only thing I can think of in a BIOS setting is the SATA mode, Check it inside BIOS under Configuration,
AHCI or Compatible, check between the two.

If not, Why did you reinstall the OS, Did the previous one had problems? Because it might be the HDD afterall that caused the first issue, I would suggest to have the HDD checked as well.

I lost my original AC adapter, and decided to buy a universal laptop adapter. I got a Rockfish universal adapter. I plugged it in, and my laptop turned on! I assumed that all was well, and I left it to charge the battery. When I came back a few hours later, I unplugged the laptop, and hit the power switch. Nothing. Would not come on. I plugged in the adapter again, and this time nothing happened. I tried taking out the battery, and just using the AC adapter. Nothing. No power. No lights. Nothing. Hmmm.. I'm thinking that either this adapter is faulty, or there's something wrong with the battery. So I got another one, the Targus universal adapter, and it didn't work either. I'm wondering if these universal adapters really work with Lenovo's. I've heard that the specs for batteries and adapters are constantly changing every year or so. Has anybody had a similar experience, or have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Mark

Hello, I have a laptop Lenovo G770 and I have a problem with the graphic drivers on my Windows 8. I downloaded the 9.0.0.0.0 Muxless version from lenovo support page for my laptop, installed it, but the drivers do not work. When I open the CCC for example and select the way the graphics can switch, the whole program crashes. A lot of things do not work, for example when I work in Photoshop and go to some advanced filters like Liquify, the screen is just black. What am I supposed to do since these are the only Windows 8 drivers, that are on the G770 drivers page? The graphics card is AMD Radeon HD6650M. Also I cannot download any driivers from AMD website, since they are not signed by Lenovo.

The current AMD Catalyst drivers for the ATI/AMD GPUs (Radeon HD 6650M in the G770) offered by Lenovo are from 2011, and they are not suitable for playing new games on this so called "gaming laptop". Update them now, and continue to do so from here on out as new games and bug fixes for the AMD/ATI hardware and software come out all the time. That's right, I'm saying LENOVO needs to release an updated catalyst version 12.6 since AMD/ATI refuses to create driver software for a customized LENOVO product. I'm only asking for the service I payed for, 3 years worth...

To start, I have seen the thread about a high pitched noise issue with this device's fan, and I don't think my problem is the same one. I have an ongoing issue with my Yoga 3 (full specs below), where for most of the time that the fan is spinning, it makes a loud grinding noise as if there's something stuck in the fan or the blade is off balance. I've only had the laptop for six months and it wasn't a problem when I bought it - it's developed since. The fan still seems to cool the laptop properly, and I've had no warnings from the device, but it's audible in quieter rooms and definitely isn't normal. I've installed the BIOS update that was recommended for a similar fan issue, and I've used OneKey Optimiser to run the fan cleaning tool several times - nothing has changed so far. I'm not sure what to do next. Should I attempt to open the machine and clean the fan unit with compressed air/investigate further, or should I contact someone about a repair? Thanks Aaron

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 Fan Grinding Noise

Hi aaroncawte ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As what you have already described , seems that you have done what is needed fro the fan noise issue.
Noting that the issue is mechanical in nature , please give tech support a call for the needed service .
No need to open the chassis for further steps not to invalidate the seal / warranty and have the tech run further check.

You can however run Lenovo Solution Center for the hardware test just to check on other parts that can also be affected and likewise temperature check at the moment of the noise for baseline data.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else had experience with an issue I am having.  I just got my new Y510p laptop and a fan has been making a constant buzzing noise.  It sounds like the fan is loose in the housing or ill-fitting and grinding aginst its housing.  I have a y510p with 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GT 750m graphics cards in SLI configuration, with 8gb ram.  The noise is coming from the fan on the left hand side of the computer.  The fan (and noise) starts as soon as the laptop is powered on.  From experience with previous laptops, I believe the CPU is located on the left side and this is a problem with the CPU fan. I consider this a serious issue, and will be returning the laptop in a few days if the problem presists.  I hope that the fan may "break itself in" over the course of time and the issue resolve itself. Best Regards,Erik

Hello, As I said before, I have a problem with my year old Lenovo G770 (i5-2410M/6GB/750GB/6650M. After I boot my machine and open some programs (eg. Chrome, Winamp and some graphics editor like Paint.NET) the laptop  screen goes sometimes black or sometimes it flashes like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56NB-elLpuU . My laptop was in the service twice, but they couldn't find the problem. In my honest opinion, it could be someting wrong with HDD or RAM because sometimes I feel the lag while installing programs and after the crash in the video the machine boots in 60-85 seconds while normally around 36-50 seconds. Anybody has the same problem or could help me? I am really disappointed with the quality of Lenovo Essential series (maybe I should buy ThinkPad? ;-) ) Thanks in advance for any advice . Ps.If you want any additional info about my laptop, tell me.

Answer:Lenovo G770 Fan not spinning up after resume from sleep or hibernate

Hey Abdul,

Welcome back.   If the fan runs normally on first boot until you suspend / resume, then I might imagine this is power management quirk, or something confused in the embedded controller.

1) Try going into BIOS and reload defaults - this might refresh values there.

2) Try uninstall / reinstall power management driver and the energy cut software (Idea power manager).

Did you recently update BIOS or drivers?

I would also try some temp monitoring software just to see how CPU temps run after you come back from sleep to see if the fan should be running.

I have an ~ 1 year old Lenovo G770 (quad core i5, 6gb ram, 750 gb hd and 2 graphics adapters: the onboard Intel HD graphics chip and a higher performance discrete 1gb ATI Radeon HD 6650M video card).  Just this week I did a reimage from the factory restore disks, then upgraded it to Windows 8.  Now I'm having a bit of an issue with drivers for the ATI Radeon HD 6650M. When I boot up, I get a Program Compatibility Assistant window for ATI Catalyst Control Center, and when I click the Get Help Online button, I'm told: "At this time, Microsoft doesn't have hybrid graphics drivers for AMD parts on Windows Update, and they aren't available on the AMD website. You'll need to get a Windows 8 compatible hybrid driver from your PC manufacturer. If this driver doesn't exist, we recommend that you use a non-hybrid driver, which might result in some loss of performance or functionality. Most notably, the external monitor port won't function on some laptops." I can't find a Windows 8 driver on AMD's site that will work for this card, and the Windows 8 drivers page for my laptop model on the Lenovo Support site only lists video drivers for the onboard Intel HD graphics chip.  I want to keep Windows 8 (I find the new interface paradigm intriguing), but I also want full functionality on my relatively new notebook. I ran the Windows 8 upgrade advisor before purchasing Win8 and wasn't warned about any compatibility issues with the video ca... I am trying to restore my Lenovo G770 to its original state (factory settings). I tried to use the System Recovery option from the OneKey Recovery menu (which is the same as reaching it whilst booting the computer), but what that does is it restarts the computer a few times and keeps it exactly how it was before trying to do so. I also tried making the CDs by choosing Create Recovery Disc from the OneKey Recovery menu but I am given a message which says: This program cannot find the initial backup image. This function is currently unavailable. After looking at different threads, I realized it was because I resized the C: partition of the hard disk. Initially, when I first bought my laptop, the hard drive had 4 partitions by default which are of the following (My hard drive size came as 750GB): 1. The System Reserved 100MB partition (which is hidden and obviously in every computer by default). 2. The C: Drive partition (I don't know how big it was)3. The D: Drive partition (Again, I don't know how big this was)4. Finally, the OEM Reserved (Lenovo) 14.5GB partition (which is where all the recovery files are kept)  Now, I didn't mess with the OEM Reserved partition at all, but what I did was I deleted the D: drive and made the C: Drive bigger, so that I can use my space more efficiently. Again, the problem is probably caused because of resizing the C: partition.  My question is: How can I make it so that ... Read more

Answer:Lenovo G770: OneKey Recovery doesn't work because of resizing the C: partition?

Hi za1407 and welcome to the community,

When you deleted D: you deleted the drivers and applications that OneKey needs to restore to factory specs.  There were also hidden files on there it also needed.

At this point, just resizing the partitions isn't going to make OneKey work.

The only way to get it back to factory is to get yourself a set of restore discs.  This will resize the partitions and put everything back the way it was.

Here's a thread where we were experimenting with the partitions.

Hey guys. I've had this laptop for about 2 years now, and at first it ran pretty much any game on high settings. Then one day my framerate dropped off out of the blue. Games I used to play on High (Star Wars The Old Republic, and Minecraft) I'd get a solid 50-60fps. Now I'm lucky if I get 10fps. Even League Of Legends, which isnt so graphic intensive, only runs at about 25fps. What's the deall? I've tried updated drivers, direct x, and whatever else needed to keep my system current. I've tried both methods of switchable graphics. No change. What's even weirder is that sometimes while trying to play swtor my card seems to "wake up" and runs smooth as silk. Perfect framerate, looks great....then back down to horrible. Any suggestions of what I might be able to try or what the issue could be? As far as I can remember this happend overnight without any warning signs.

Right, got a brand new pc 2 weeks ago. Been really lovely to me so far, apart from the HDD grinding..
I've looked through the whole interwebs and a bit more but none on the solutions has helped me! I've disabled Super fetch and Windows search which helped a little. But i still hear grinding from my harddrive? is it just my case (ive removed the harddrive screws)?
I've been looking into the Reliabilty and Performance monitor and it looks like Svchost.exe is causing the problems.
Trying to get screenshots of it (in the reli and perfor montior) but for some reason its being quite quiet! Bah!

Question: T61 grinding fan

I have a T61 7658 CTO, and the fan has been making more and more noise as time has gone by.  It started as a light clicking while the fan is running, and now it makes a fairly loud grinding noise.  I'm well out of warranty, so that's not an option.  Does anyone know if there's a way I can fix this, or do I need to replace the fan?  If I do need to replace the fan, any idea where I can get one?

Answer:T61 grinding fan

Bearing on the fan is properly running out of lubrication. Someone say, if you pull on the fan itself, it should pop off, which allows you add some high quality bearing oil/grease. I never tried this myself, so i don't know whether this will actually works.  If worst comes to worst, just replace the fan yourself, you can source one from ebay for around 70 to 100 USD.  Message Edited by lead_org on 04-05-2009 07:54 PM

Question: Serious grinding!

OK not serious but at the moment my hard drive will not shut up, constant CPU usage between 3 and 6 percent accessing something. All I can see in the task manager is a little bit of avg and some system tasks. Im at a dead loss on this. I thought I had it sorted when I told the .net framework to sort its self out all in one go instead of using a background process but it has started again.

Anyway any chance of you guys glancing over the hijack log.

Answer:Serious grinding!

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe, the Java Quick Starter service can cause unnecessary disk access. Unless you use a lot of Java applications and want them to start as fast as possible, open services.msc (Start->Run->services.msc) and change its startup type to manual. This is a particularly annoying service and will re-enable itself everytime you update the Java Runtime Environment.

I'd also disable the Java Update Scheduler (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe) and the installshield update service (C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe) but then I prefer to take manual control of my updates rather than letting them happen automatically.

How to access the BIOS,

Question: G770 Fan Issues

I turned on my laptop 3 days ago and it started immediately buzzing extremely loudly. The whole thing was vibrating and I could hear it from the other room. So I took it to a repair shop, got it cleaned out and was told it was fine. Well, once I go back home and turned it on I discovered the buzzing is still there. The only difference is that the intensity of the buzzing now varies. I'm just wondering If I'm going to have to get the fan replaced or it's something else perhaps.

Answer:G770 Fan Issues

hi DJConnelly,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First Make sure that there is no CD/DVD  in the DVD Tray, and check if it is the issue
Aside from the DVD Drive the only thing that can make a buzzing sound and that kind of Vibration is is the Fan,
The hard drive disk spins as well but not likely to create a buzzing sound, most of the time just a clicking noise if the Hard drive is damaged.

You might need the fan to be replaced,
You can refer to this maintenance Manual about Part Replacements and part numbers.
Lenovo G770 Hardware Maintenance Manual V1.0

Best Regards

Question: G770 problems

Hi Ive recently recieved my G770 its a beautiful machine and im sure it will work great soon but Im also having a few problems if I could get some help... windows performance score was a dodgy 3.9 due to the graphics....but I think this is because its running on the onboard graphics (not sure how to switch...this could also be the above users problem?). Quite often, scrolling and mouse response will pause as if the system is overworked or somethin...but intel cpu meter says low and there is no overheating? =S i tried to install the ATI catalyst driver but it said the system/card was unsupported....I think this may be due to the switching graphics issue...? not sure which drivers to download from this link as my system is newer than most of the releases, so surely theyre already loaded?Auto update didnt work you see...it only works with thinkpads right? and this is an ideapad... =S any help appreciated thanks

Question: G770 Overheating

Hi all,  Recently my G770 has started overheating, I applied some fresh Thermal paste, but it barely made any difference. Just by browsing, core temp reports tempratures of 80 degrees +, Ive cleaned out the Fan vents, the Heat sink, re applied the Thermal Paste. The system fan is 100% operational, and is litterally throttling while the system over heats as it is unable to cope up with the heat.Any ideas on what can be possible be going wrong ? and what can I do to help improve the situation ?

Question: G770 Keyboard

Just got a G770 off of Lenovo's outlet, it has a french keyboard and would like to replace it with an standard english keyboard, I found this: http://www.lenovospareparts.com/Keyboard_c_660.html However both of the keyboards they have listed are out of stock on there. So I did a google search for the two product numbers listed 25012184 and 25012185 I have found them both. I'm just wondering what the difference is. The only thing i can see is one has DF and one has JME in the product name. If I look up the hardware config for my laptop it has a DF one in it. Anyone know the difference? Will a JME one work for me?

Answer:G770 Keyboard

Hi pitchinnate,

The DF and JME are acronyms for the keyboard vendors/manufacturers but they are the same.  Both part numbers are the keyboard part numbers available for the G770.  Either one of the keyboards should work with your laptop.

I already had this issue. Someone told me to power purge it, and then the laptop could start. Now the problem is back again. So, when I turn it on, all the lights (that should) turn on, but the screen doesn't. Every few days (I think) I can turn it on again, I did it 2 days ago (after a 2 or 3 week break). All was fine until I closed the laptop (so it went to hibernation or whatever), and then it didn't work. Sometimes the screen doesn't start, and sometimes the laptop keeps restarting every few seconds (screen still doesn't turn on). I'm thinking of running it (when I can), and doing a disk check, or formatting the drive and reinstalling Windows etc.

hi fenixx123,

If you have the Product Key Sticker at the Back of the Laptop, the you will need that for installing Windows
I Assume you have Windows 7 Pre installed since you got a sticker at the back
You can check this link for Downloading a Windows 7 Image and make sure it matches the version that's on the sticker
     http://www.gegeek.com/documents/3DCA0ADB8A7D0DCB519631C1D016C9D5954AB807.html
Burn it to a Disk or to a USB Flash as Bootable

Install the OS and Use the Key at the bottom of your unit to activate Windows

As an easy Alternative You can contact Lenovo Technical Support Team in your Location and Purchase a Recovery CD

Question: G770 USB 3 Port

I recently picked up this laptop and have been happy with it for the most part.  For the life of me I couldn't figure out which USB port was the 3.0. I read the manuals I examined the ports and nothing stood out seperating one from the other. As a matter of fact all my research says the port should be colored blue which makes sense as my external drive has a blue plug and it is USB 3.0. I finally had to call Lenovo for some help and after a bit of a search on his part he declared that the port closest to the HDMI port is the USB 3.0! Does anyone know if there's a way for me to tell which is which besides the supposed "blue" port? Just curious. I normally operate with Firefox. I am told that I should have a memory usage on Firefox of around 120000K. Over the last couple of weeks my PC is grinding to almost a standstill with a memory usage of nearly 400000K! At this point web pages take around a minute to change. The only way I can get over this is to reboot the computer, but within 45 minutes the MU has risen dramatically.

I also cannot use Windows Explorer or AOL browsers.

I also keep having a message stating that applications are failing to start '..........because MSVCP71dll was not found..' A souple of taps on 'Enter' clears this.

I have no idea if there is a link between the two problems. I cannot make any sense of MSVCP71dll on a Google search.

Please can anyone help me get out of the mess I am in. Any replies must be in words of one sylable, as I have great difficulties in understanding computer jargon.

Answer:PC grinding to a halt......almost!

First, please post your basic system info by using this:

TSG SysInfo

What version of Firefox are you using? Have you added any add-ons recently? Have you installed any other software recently? The error message is related to a software issue.

Question: Grinding noise?

can someone please help me?
just a few minutes ago i was simply browsing and heard a loud grinding noise from my pc, i checked all the fans and it seems to be from the gpu, i restarted pc and still goes on. i left it off for now but i cant seem to find the cause, nothing is hitting anything
help?
thnx

Answer:Grinding noise?

You wouldn't be able to see anything. The grinding noise occurs when the ball bearings go ( at one point the balls start showing wear and don't run "round" anymore, causing the fanblades to tumble.)
Simple solution: you need a new fan. In cases of emergency (like you can't get your hands on a new fan anytime soon) there is a way to prolong the life of the fan a little bit. You get some graphite powder from your automotive supplier, peel back the fan label and carefully put a little bit onto the center of the fan.
I really mean CAREFUL the stuff is worse on cloth than laser toner
Make sure to put the label back on and don't use any form of oil..it will only cause a mess.

I am having trouble with my HP pavilion notebook. When using media (online or offline) it intermittently freezes and makes a loud grinding sound. Sometimes its just for a second but sometimes I have to force a shut down to get it to stop. Also when I am listening to music or audio books with the lid closed, it will intermittently stop for a few seconds and come back on (it is set to "do nothing" when lid is closed). I have checked for over heating, that is not the problem.

Hi, can any one advise me? I have been getting a grinding noise from my PC roughly monthly since I obtained it in Nov. 2004, I think it may be when I push it a little??could this be the hard drive protesting ? it`s a pentium 4 3000ghz, asrobs.

Answer:GRINDING noise from PC

Some hard drives can get noisy when there is a lot of disc activity.......I have an IBM Deskstar 80GB drive which sounds a bit like a boiling kettle when working hard.It has done for the 3 years since I got it.Also some fans will speed up when temperatures rise and can become very loud.If this noise is infrequent, only happens when you are working the pc hard and most importantly not getting worse over time then I would be inclined to ignore it.If it's annoying you then you will need to track down the culprit and consider replacing it with a new quieter version.

Question: Grinding Noise

Hello, I have recently heard what sounds like a grounding noise coming from my computer. I usually only notice it when the computer is searching for something (say a Google search), and I seem to especially notice it while searching on e-Bay. Once the site or page is found, it then stops making that sound. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is there anything I can do to stop it, or repair it? Does this mean the hard drive is about to crash? I have a Dell Computer, and Windows XP system. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Grinding Noise

Just to be on the safe side do a back up if you havent done.Open the case and try to isolate the noise.
