Lenovo Essential G580 Keyboard Malfunctioning (Keyboard typing unnecessary characters)

Question: Lenovo Essential G580 Keyboard Malfunctioning (Keyboard typing unnecessary characters)

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with the other set of keys (most of them) The laptop had really no issues until this one cropped up. I searched on the internet and found that a similar issue was seen in the Thinkpad Edge15: Refer: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-edge-15-keyboard-problem/td-p/406731/pag... Please help me with this and suggest a viable solution as this is really blocking my work and I have to access my mails and work on a friends PC. My Location: Pune, Maharashtra, India Thanks,Bijoy Prakash

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo Essential G580 Keyboard Malfunctioning (Keyboard typing unnecessary characters)

hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

Whenever I type certain characters another character will pop up with it. For example, I try to type "L" and when I'm not using the onscreen keyboard it types as ";L". There are several different keys this is happening to but it is not happening with every key. This just started about 30 minutes ago. I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more

Hello a while back my friend spilt a bit of soda on my laptops keyboard, I dried, and flipped my PC over flat on a towel. There was no damage for about a month, but now some key do multiple actions. Example: Pressing (Backspace) now moves the curser to the right one space, turn my volume down once, and then Backspace. Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

Answer:keyboard typing wrong characters

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

My keyboard is typing correctly in Word but types nonsense when I type in either a browser window or in my email. If I type a web address in Chrome, Explorer or Firefox it comes out as random letters, symbols and numbers and the same if I try to type an email in yahoo or gmail. As I say, it is fine typing in Word. Any ideas gratefully received.

HI, and welcome to TSG...

You may have the Num lock on. Its located at the top-right of the keyboard above the F11 key. If it is on, there should be one of the four indicator lights illuminated to the left of the power button. The first on, actually.

Good luck..

Hi There,
So when I try to log into any online banking/credit card website, typing on my keyboard produces a random string of characters which do not correspond to what I press. I of course am unable to log in under these circumstances as what I am typing is not simply masked but it really has typed the wrong character. This does not happen on any other type of website/situation, only banking/credit cards. no idea what is causing this, please help!
I am running windows 10, fully updated, I run ESET nod 32 antivirus, updated and scanned, malware bytes, updated and scanned, Zemana anti-logger (same happens when this is on and off (i have tried this) rapport service for google chrome, u block origin extension, https everywhere.

Answer:new problem, keyboard is not typing accurate characters,

There are a mix of ideas here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-...Do not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello, I just need somebody to confirm my assumptions. Keyboard on my Lenovo G780 is dead and now I want to replace it. Even though my keyboard has Croatian layout, I would not mind US one. Now the question. Would US keyboard layout fit on my laptop? I belive there are more keys on Croatian layout keyboard and that is what confuses me and makes me wonder would it fit or not. Would some backlit keyboard work too? And is there anything else I have to pay attention to? Thank you!

Hi,I bought a Lenovo B50-70 from Ebuyer just before Christmas and it has developed a strange fault. The C V & H keys don't work when pressed in lower case but if you put caps lock on they work and if caps lock is on and you press the arrow key and the letter key they will type lower case.Anyone had this before?Being 2 months old its still under guarantee but was hoping there was something I could do to repair it rather than sending it back for a replacement.Thanksrevy32

Answer:Lenovo Essential B50-70 Laptop keyboard problem

Welcome to the Lenovo Community revy32 !

A couple of things to try......

First, try reinstalling the keyboard, mouse, touchpad driver.  The link below is for the available drivers from Lenovo for your model. Just select your operating system in the top box for the correct driver listing.......

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-b-series-laptops/lenovo-b50-70-...

Secondly, if you have a USB keyboard available, try that.

If the USB keyboard works without problems and the driver installation didn't resolve the problem then I would suspect a faulty keyboard that needs to be replaced.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

Answer:Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

In order to execute those ASCII/ANSI codes, you must have NumLock on.  The involves the Fn (blue) key.  With it on, you then use alt  = the small numbers located on the lower right coner of keys to the right of the Trackpoint head.  This is not easy.  I prefer to run charmap.exe, minimize it to the task bar, and copy/paste the characters I need. I don't know if the old standard way (Num Lock On, ALT+nnn) would work with an external full keyboard.

If you Keyboard has an icon on the Spacebar then your keyboard is likely o have this feature.

To Turn ON and OFF the keyboard backlight, you will have to press FN+Spacebar

If you don't have the icon on the keyboard then I believe that the system does not support this feature.

Answer:Lenovo G580 Keyboard not responding ?

hi shehabo,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Using your USB keyboard, can you try Pressing (Windows  key + R) to open a run command and type OSK then hit enter to open an On screen keyboard.
Try typing using the Onscreen keyboard,

-    If that did not work either try going to this setting and uncheck everything and  hit Apply / OK

-    If that work, You might need to try these Steps
            - Do a power Drain / Remove AC adapter and Battery  then hold the power button down for at least 15 sec. then reconnect only the AC adapter and try the keyboard.

           - You might need to call Technical Support  or If you're comfortable checking the keyboard connection, you can check this G580 Maintenance Manual on how to reseat the keyboard connection.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hi everyone. Really strange fault I was hoping someone had come across. We have got 15 Lenovo G580 Laptops with our fresh image on. However I am getting reports of more than half of them typing Z randomly. I know its not a virus / malware because the toshiba laptops (same image) work correctly. We have recently reinstalled the touchpad drivers to disable some of the pinch zoom features but im not sure why this would effect the function of the keyboard and allow it to randomly type Z.Do you think this is a bad batch of laptops ?

Hello I brought my G580 on boxing day 2012, and in October the warranty ran out, since then I have been having problems with the keyboard. Most of the buttons do other things like they are now hotkeys and opening up programs and sub menus, the space bar doesn't work, to get it to work again I have to restart. I have tried to reinstall windows 8 through a back up, but nothing happens, I have tried to refresh, but it fails, Now it won't even allow me to go to the store and update windows 8 to 8.1. I haven't even had it for a year yet and the warranty has expired, so any help would be great thanks. deadmic

I bought this awesome, lovely and exquisite piece of technology innovation in August 2014.I have come to India and everyone loves it.Everything was fine until the last Saturday morning when I was typing an email. I got on a phone call for a while and it went in sleep mode. Pretty normal. I concluded the call and touched the space bar expecting the normal, quick wake up and the login screen. The login screen came up alright, but the password box was already filled. I tried to use backspace to clear the box and I missed a heartbeat! Nothing seemed to happen. So I force shut it holding the power button and after a minute bring it up again. Same scene! This has continued. I am going to be in India for a few months. So I checked with Lenovo service centers calling them. And I learn this model is not supported in India. My warrantee is valid, but of no use!I go to a local dealer, to no avail. I have lost my primary way of communication. Difficult to live this way. Right? SO I buy a toolset (expensive!), open the back cover and disconnect the keyboard cable. I put the cover back and start using it as a tablet only.It is serving me for now, but cant do this for long. What may be wrong? My friend is travelling to the US (San Jose) in a couple of weeks. Should I send it with him? Will Lenovo give me a replacement keyboard or whatever part? I have been a computer professional for 30+ years and used more than 6 laptops so far. Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Keyboard continuously floods characters in the keyboard buffer

I have this same problem but with my Y510p. It floods the 'Q' character.

The only solution which seems possible is a keyboard replacement (unless the connecting port is damaged, which is highly unlikely). I have ordered a keyboard and it is on the way.

As for your scenario, I would say that if you friend is going to be in US for more than 2 months then it is fine to send it with him for repairs. You could also order a keyboard online and replace it yourself (I ordered on ebay).
Check your manual on lenovo website for supported keyboard part number.

Tip -
To disable a malfunctioning keyboard like yours, you can either disconnect it physically (like you did)
OR
You can go into Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards
Select the laptop keyboard and manually install a wrong keyboard driver.
This way the keyboard wont be recognized and wont work.

Recently my Z580 has been typing characters (specifiaclly a period) repeatedly, without me having pressed any key, whenever I open any applicaiton or software (such as notepad or the internet). Also whenever I press the b or n key it begins doing the same thing and types periods without stopping. I've tried cleaning the keayboard, but that didn't work. I have also tried booting in safe mode to see if the problem persisted and it did. I've scanned my computer for viruses as well but found nothing. So I'm out of ideas as to what to do. Thanks for the help

Hello all! So I looked around the forums for an answer before I posted, and I found a topic that was about this same problem. The person finally solved the problem by system restoring their laptop to before September 19th. I did this and disabled automatic update installation, and I was fine. Then yesterday my dad was using my laptop to look something up. Apparently he thought it would be "helpful" to install any updates I had, and he updated my laptop before he gave it back. Today the problem came back, where I'll be typing and my keyboard will decide to give me numbers instead of letters. I tried another system restore, but it didn't list any days before the beginning of October as options, no matter how hard I looked, so I can't possibly restore to before September 19th. Is there any way I can get rid of this problem, or did my dad just ruin my laptop?

Sup everyone. I just want to ask a question about my keyboard. When i used my keyboard before it worked well but, now, if i press 's', there is like an right clicking motion come with it. I mean, when i press 's', laptop accepts that order with another keyboard part. I tried to solve it with keytweak or something but, it didn't work. I hope you answer the question as quickly as possible.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

Answer:Lenovo Essential G580 startup problem

Hi Denisse,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your G580 Laptop is not booting to Windows and a stuck at a black screen with mouse pointer, below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power then resetting BIOS to its defaults should resolve the issue.
Turn ON the computer, before Lenovo LOGO is displayed on the screen. Keep tapping on ?F2? Key to enter BIOS menu. Note: To check how the BIOS menu looks and to explore its options Click Here.
Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now Click on ?F10? Key to safe the changes that are done in BIOS, restart the computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue persists.

Answer:Lenovo Essential G580, audio combo jack problem

Hi Vulturul,

please try connect the adapter to the headphone first, then connect the adapter to the laptop,
if still not working, maybe adapter is defective.

Headphones (without mike) with 3-conductor 3.5mm stereo plug can be plugged into 4-conductor
combo jack directly without adapter, the laptops build-in mike will then be used automatically.

Links are not working!

hi lookupramesh,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

It looks like there's an imminent problem on the LCD's backlight. Can you try to:
1. Perform a cold shutdown
2. Turn the computer ON and press the F2 button to boot into the BIOS
3. In the BIOS, press F9 to reset settings to default then oress F10 to save and exit. (this will reload the hardware configurations to default).

If you still get the same issue, you may need to contact lenovo for service.

I own a Lenovo 3000 y410  and as my title indicates it is constantly typing q even without  touching the keyboard. This doesn't seem like it is a physical problem because i was able to take the key totally off ( so that there was nothing on the sensor), and clean this area with compressed air. Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

Hi to all...I've lenovo g560 laptop whose keyboard is not working properly. Now, a replacement laptop keyboard for lenovo g570 is available at local market. So, will it be compatible with my lenovo g560..Thanks in advance

Answer:Is lenovo g570 laptop keyboard compatible with lenovo g560's keyboard

hi hamzaali52,

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at the keyboard part numbers for the G560 (see page 79-80 of the HMM) and the G570 (see page 79-83 of the HMM), there are no matching part numbers between the two models, thus, the keyboard may fit but it may not work due to a whitelist of compatible parts or due to a different keyboard ribbon/cable layout.

I recommend you stick to the part numbers listed on the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) for best compatibility.

Answer:The cursor jumps while typing & the mouse gets locked very often on Lenovo G580

Hi Nidhin,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear there is cursor moving erratically and Touchpad freezes in the G580 Laptop.

Below are some troubleshooting steps to diagnose and resolve the issue:

The issue should be checked once in ?Safe Mode?, to get to their restart the computer and keep tapping on ?F8? Key to get advanced boot options, then select ?Safe Mode? option.
After checking it in ?Safe Mode? and if the issue is same restart the computer to Normal Mode, re-install the Touchpad driver in the computer, below is the link to download the TP driver.
Touchpad Driver for Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit)

 3. If the issue still persists even after re-installing TP driver, performing OKR (One Key Recovery) should resolve the issue.

NOTE: OKR works if and only if the Operating System is pre-installed; Click here and refer page no. 33 & 34 to check the steps to perform OKR, also please backup the data before performing OKR as the computer will be re-installed to its factory settings.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

So last night I was having a good time playing Sims 3 when all of a sudden BAM! About 7 notices about these darn sticky keys pop up. I was freaked out that somehow I got a Virus so I ran my Norton and like I expected since its on all the time, nothing showed up. After dealing with the constant pop ups I bit the bullet and clicked the link to the Ease of Access Center. I clicked off everything, and clicked the 'set up' links which brought me to more advanced sticky keys setup. I made sure everything was off and rebooted my laptop.
It was awesome. For 2 seconds. Then the same process happened for filter keys.
After going through this process at least a dozen times -seriously- I then unplugged my power source, turned the computer off, took out the battery...let it sit for a while...then put the battery back in, restarted and plugged in the power.
For nothing. It was still the same story. With a twist now though. Now the numbers and the row beneath are either joined together (press e, get 3e etc) that is, if they work, and the remainder of the letters capitlize sporadically. And sometimes after a reboot the keyboard just doesnt work.
Why oh why is this happening? Can someone PLEASE help me? I'm close to tears...or violence.

However some indicators such as NUM Lock still lights up. Furthermore my mouse works perfectly fine and i often have to improper shut down when i'm in a middle of a full screen program as i have to press ESC to quit the program. When i improper shut down and try to switch on again, it sometimes result in a constant beeping sound so i have to press the power button again to restart the computer.
Please help...Any help would be grateful! ^.^

Answer:Keyboard Malfunctioning

Replace the keyboard. $9.95 at Wal-Mart. Available used for free. If it is wireless, it is definitely bad. If it is USB, it could be bad. PS/2 boards are almost never bad unless they have food and dirt under the keys.
We throw away 100 keyboards a month, so ask any tech shop... or Salvation army store.
Fast boards that gamers like, have a much higher incidence of failure. There is almost no computer component with a higher failure rate than a wireless keyboard.

Hi guys, I own an Acer V3-371 HV laptop since 1.5 years now. I am very satisfied with the product, but last night the keyboard stopped working properly, parts of the keys are broken: w r t u o p x backspace del 1 4 6 8 0 ~ = ] ' win and fn.A while ago I upgraded the ram from 4 to 8 GB, and replaced the thermal paste (since temperatures were rising), so I know how to open the laptop. I first thought that maybe the connecting plastic cable from the keyboard to the motherboard might be damaged, so I opened the laptop, but I could not see any damage on the connector. I also couldn't see any other damage to the keyboard and elsewhere inside the laptop. Does anyone have an idea what may have caused the malfunction of these keys? And how I can solve this issue?I prefer fixing it myself, rather than sending the laptop in, because I need it for work, and since I opened the laptop myself already (for upgrading ram and thermal paste), I am afraid Acer will not apply warranty, leading to a high repair bill.I found a replacement top cover on ebay, because I think it will be impossible to separate the keyboard from the cover, since it is 'welded' on with plastic dots. But before buying that I would like to know for sure that that part is broken, not something else. Is there any way I can test this? Thanks in advance for your time/effort!

Hi all,

A few days ago, my keyboard suddenly started behaving strangely. Before this problem began, when I was using Internet Explorer, the Tab key would take me to the next line on a form, or to the next "highlightable" option. However, it now brings up the Favourites menu. Also, certain key combinations bring up the Start Menu, and take me to things like the shut-down menu box, My Documents etc.

As far as I am aware, I have not changed anything to do with the keyboard at all: no software changes, I haven't touched anything in the Control Panel, yet this has happened. It's not the end of me using my PC, but it certainly is an inconvenience, and one which I am eager to have rectified.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I should add here (and as I've typed that I was directed to the Help and Support Centre) that I have tried unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in, checking my keyboard settings in the Control Panel... I can't find anything to explain the problem.

Hi there, I got my computer, an E-machine (I forget the actual model number, I'm at a computer lab at my university right now) in 2003, and I hadn't really had any problems with it until last fall when I moved to an apartment complex at my school. Since then, I've had a whole host of problems, mostly that it freezes up ALL the time, everything just freezes in place and the only way to get it to work again is to manually reboot it by turning it off and back on again. I managed to live with this problem, though, because I couldn't afford to not use it for however long it would have taken to get it serviced.

Just yesterday, it froze and I rebooted it like always, but instead of Windows XP loading up, it gave me an error saying Floppy Drive Fail (80), and it wouldn't go any further. I bypassed it by pushing F1, and it was temporarily working again. But this morning, I went to use it, and now the keyboard is acting bizarre! It's typing two of every key I press, and when I went to click on icons on the desktop, it would select more than one as if I were holding down the shift key. The actual keyboard is in good condition, none of the keys are stuck and it's clean, though. So I tried restarting the computer thinking that would help, but when I got to the Windows login screen, I found that I couldn't type in my password because the problem was still there.

I've tried restarting, unplugging and plugging everything back in, and loading W... Read more

Hi all, I have had the following problem for the past 3 days and it has gotten to me honestly, see if anyone can help me... My keyboard has ceased to work. None of the Latin keys function at all, only Ctrl, Shift and the Windows key continue to function, that and the F keys, but only when FnLk is pressed, the rest (such as the numbers, enter, direction keys, letter and so on) do not work, however they do sometimes provoke a sound as if their input was not allowed, but no input is seen on the screen. Furthermore, I have attempted to solve the issue by updating drivers, reinstalling the device, using windows restore to return to previous setting, reset windows and re-install the OS itself and even boost in Safe Mode, all to no avail, which leads me to believe this could be a hardware issue. The laptop is new and has never suffered any sort of trauma nor harsh treatment. If anyone has a clue of what else it might be, besides hardware I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

I then thought that it might be a driver problem; unfortunately Toshiba does not provide any keyboard drivers, so I checked with Microsoft. I tried different drivers in the hope of maybe hitting the correct one, still with no luck. I then checked the keyboard drivers on a healthy Toshiba laptop and copied them to the defected one ( i8042prt.sys and kdbclass.sys ). The keyboard still did not work!!
What should I do?
Note:
-In the keyboard properties, the device status is: This device is working properly.
-Whenever I type any key the numlock lights on and sometimes some weird output is given like the time and date.

Answer:KeyBoard malfunctioning

Check for a stuck key. Try plugging in an external keyboard. If that types OK you have a bad keyboard in the laptop. If it is the keyboard they are fairly easy to change. directions here: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-L505-L505D/remove-laptop-motherboard-1.htm

I recently bought a cheap port keyboard manufactured by durabrand. The model number is sf-kmp103. It said no driver was needed but it doesn't function properly. The bottom row of letters and the space simply do not type. Any suggestions?

Answer:New Keyboard Malfunctioning

Keyboards really do not require software in Windows so it sounds like the anwer is in the word "cheap" and the new word should be replace it. Keyboards either work or they don't and they mostly work.

Hi, It sounds like you have the wrong keyboard layout set - ie Uk keyboard layout for a US keyboard. If you have more than one keyboard layout set in Windows 10, you can toggle between them by holding down the Ctrl Key and pressing the Shift key Alternatively, you can change the layout for your keyboard as described on the relevant link below. Change Keyboard Layout - Windows 8 & 10 Regards, DP-K

Hello,I own an Ideapad Y530 and I have been experiencing problems with my keyboard. When I'm typing it either will not register, or it instead put an m instead of a :. My numpad will also turn on and then turn off randomly so I will have numbers instead of what I originally typed e.g. 5 instead of an I in my sentences. I've checked the device manager and it says my keyboard devices are functioning properly and its the latest version available. Can anyone give me insight to my problem? Thanks

I was typing as normal today, and suddenly my number keys stopped working.  The entire row is completely out. I have a Tfourthirty - can't do numbers - and every so often my number "one" key goes off as if it's being held down and a whole row of the number is typed.  Also, sometimes I'm typing and a whole bunch of numbers will go off in the text field.  It also interferes with my touchpad function, and my browser will randomly go into full screen. When I tried restarting, I kept getting re-routed to the recovery screen, I think because it's as though the number and Function keys are being pressed. This is the second backlit thinkpad keyboard I've had to have replaced, and I JUST had it replaced less than two weeks ago.  Please help [exclamation points] Is this something I have to have Lenovo hardware dept service??  It took them three weeks to get it right last time so if anyone knows of an alternate solution it woul be great....

hey everyone, my keyboard has started playing up lately. i have a bios password and it works fine up until the user log on screen. im in safe mode using the onscreen keyboard in conjunction with my mouse and i cant stress how slow and boring this is..

i recently bought anew advent keyboard and mouse wireless usb, but that nor my older keyboard works. when i press ANY key after the log on screen my comp freezes and i have to restart it. under device manager as expected i had the yellow icon next to my keyboard, and troub;eshooter said i should just uninstall + reinstall, but that didnt work.

any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Answer:keyboard malfunctioning

Sounds like a usb issue...any reinstalls of Windows recently? What SP #? You might have to go to eMachine site and see if any new motherboard drivers there can be downloaded.
Was the old mouse and keyboard Ps2 or usb? You might need to check the bios to see that it enables usb mouse and keyboard.

So basically I was wiping down my keyboard and when I turned on my computer, my keyboard was having some issues. Mainly the issue was every time I typed 'a' it typed 'a3' and 'z' would be 'z2.' I was able to fix this by toggling numlock, but now when I type 'a' it scrolls down the page. When I type 'q' it presses enter and starts a new line. This mainly happens in Microsoft word documents and web browsers etc.  I've tried uninstalling my keyboard drive, that didn't help. I've tried odd tricks like ctl+alt+del and hitting win button and 'x' multiple times. I've also tried holding shift+ctl+alt on both sides of the keyboard. None of these worked. I've tried remapping keys using SharpKey, also didn't work.  The clues are pointing towards this being a hardware issue, but I just want to be absolutely sure. My keyboard was working before I cleaned it, I think I must have pressed something. Please help. Thanks.

Hello

After not using my laptop for a couple of weeks because the charger failed, I started it with a new charger (trying to use the internet) but a number of keys are not functioning, including but not limited to: j, k, p, q, t and u.

I was told I might have a virus but if this is the wrong forum, I apologise (and for breaching any other convention).

I am using Windows Home Vista Basic on an Acer Aspire 5357Z and Norton 360 and Malwarebytes Anti Malware for security. I have scanned using these but to no avail.

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have Dell inspiron 15 3543,
Recently first 2 rows in keyboard are not working, that is function keys and number keys and some other keys.... I hve formatted OS and reinstalled it, after that also keyboard is not working, I hv tried with connecting USB keyboard, even with USB same keys are not working. . What may be the problem?? How it can be resolved

Answer:Keyboard malfunctioning

If neither keyboard works -- internal or external -- it's likely the mainboard that's faulty.
If the system is in warranty, call Dell for repair.  If it's out of warranty, note that replacing a board - particularly if you have to pay for the labor - will likely run more than 50% of what the system initially cost.  It may not be a cost-effective repair -- you'll get at best a 90-day repair warranty.  With any low-end system like this, it may be better to replace rather than repair the system.

Yesterday my keyboard and mouse started acting weird. The keyboard isnt typing the correct letters (for example, the A key doesnt work at all, the Z key is functioning as the delete key, the backspace key types a random string of letters, and the shift key tabs). The mouse isnt functioning properly either (the left click is highlighting whatever I click on, and if I double click it opens the properties menu). Ive never had a problem with either before - the mouse is an old Dell mouse, and the keyboard is a Dynex which is only a few months old. The PC itself is custom built, running Windows XP Pro x64 OS.

I tried restarting the computer however I cannot type my login password to get back into the computer (Im writing this post from an old laptop). I attempted logging in to safe mode however the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard arent functioning so I cannot scroll down to choose the safe mode option, and the enter key doesnt seem to be doing anything either. My account is the only account on the computer, and is a passworded administrator account, and there is no guest account so there is no way for me to access the computer without being able to type my password.

I dont believe that this is an issue with the hardware as the mouse works with my laptop and Ive never had an issue with either piece before. Im concerned that it might be a virus messing with the controls. Before I restarted my computer I ran adaware and spybot which found a few things which I removed, but s... Read more

OS: Windows XP

Main problem: Some keys and signs are appearing at the same time when I hit certain keys.

For example, when I hit the '3' on my num pad, it adds '/3'. When I hit the Up Arrow, an apostrophe appears either on the current line or the one above it. The same happens when I hit the apostrophe key. When I press the Caps Lock, a semi-colon appears. The Caps Lock function is going mad, turning on and off when it pleases. And so it the Num Lock.

Any more information you need, do ask. I shall provide as much as I can.

When typing the words skip to and begin in other places in the sentence or in the paragraph. Annoying. Also the only way I can space is to stop after every word and hit the center of the space bar. I have vacuumed my keyboard thoroughly, and, although better, not operating properly.

Answer:Keyboard (and spacebar) malfunctioning.

Laptop or PC?If it's a PC then you can replace the keyboard. If laptop then you could use an external USB keyboard. If it is specific keys (like the spacebar) then it can sometimes be cured, at least temporarily, by turning the computer off then giving the offending key(s) several quite hard taps.I doubt this is a software issue but the keyboard itself playing up.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have been using the same Dell laptop with WinXP for several years, and it has been a relatively reliable machine (am posting this message from another computer). The other day, the inbuilt keyboard started malfunctioning: some keys did not respond when pressed, others seemed to launch random shortcuts which would usually have required several combined keypresses.

Thinking this might be a result of dirt and dust build-up, I hoovered the keys, which seemed to work temporarily. But after about half an hour, the malfunction returned, more emphatically. None of the keys were responding at all except the up/down arrow keys and the vowels, and these all came out with acute accents (i.e. á, é, í, ú).

This formula has been repeating itself. Every time I boot the machine, the keyboard functions fine for about half an hour, then behaves as above. I tried using an external keyboard via the PS/2 port and the same thing happened, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware fault (even though I'm posting it in this forum). There are no conflicts listed in the Device Manager.

I don't know what could cause this response in the machine. I have an updated anti-virus software and it has not picked up anything. I read somewhere about internal problems in laptops (connections burning out or something). But that wouldn't explain the unpredictability of the malfunction. It has also been accompanied by other quirks, such as unresponsive desktop icons and inability to navigate be... Read more

Hi, I recently discovered this issue after an update from Lenovo. - When I first turn on the machine and the Windows login page appears, the password box begins to fill up with text as if someone is holding down a key. This continues to happen until I click the password box with my mouse. - I am unable to type "Shift+Y" - In any and every text box or text editor, the number "6" keeps being printed. This is happening while I'm typing this message and it is very annoying. I think the issue may be that the last Lenovo update seemed to have failed. I just don't know how to fix it. The computer is still under a two year warrently.

Answer:Keyboard malfunctioning on our L540

Hi Aatelfer,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with keyboard on your ThinkPad L540.

1. Check whether keyboard have liquid spilled.
2. Check whether key is stuck by foreign matter or cannot bounce as normal.
3. If keyboard is normal then boot the system to safe mode and check if problem persist. If no issue in safe mode then check with restoring the system to earlier date. If issue persists in safe mode then replace KBO.

Hope this helps!

A few weeks ago, my keyboard on my desktop computer started behaving funny. For instance, whenever I hit the spacebar, my keyboard will register a spacebar + insert. The same happens if I hit the insert button. This makes editing a sentence or paragraph very tedious, as it is constantly changes from "insert mode" to overwriting the text in front of it. There is a similar pairing of my right arrow key and down arrow key, and a few other strange key combinations.

The first thing I tried was cleaning my usb keyboard. Then, I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it back in, but nothing changed. Next, I uninstalled the keyboard driver through the Device Manager (I'm running Windows 8), unplugged the keyboard, then plugged it back in so that it would automatically reinstall the drivers. When that didn't work, I figured the issue must be my keyboard, so I bought a new one. I plugged in my new keyboard this morning, and the same issue was still occurring. Has anybody ever seen an issue like this or have any suggestions for where I should go from here?

Thank you

After a very small wine spill on the right side of my keyboard, it is now acting completely weird - almost like each key is a DOS command. a couple of examples: Typing l brings up the login screen; e brings up explorer; but other keys do very strange things. In Word, the letter h toggles the drawing pad and types a y on the screen!! Some keys do nothing - for example, the d, x - typing a z gives you za on the screen.

Also the USB port on the right side doesn't work. Have I reset the keyboard somehow whey trying to dry it? Programs still work . Help!!

This is an HP HDX 16, specifically. Not ten minutes after using the keyboard with no problems, I open it and the thing goes berserk. Right now, the main symptoms are:

pressing 'Backspace' will replace the letter before it with a space

pressing 'g' will yield 'bgtv'
pressing 'h' will yield 'nhym'
pressing 'z', 'x', or 'caps' will toggle caps interchangeably
pressing the parentheses key will yield ' ='[/ '

some keys function normally, like 'a' or 'q', while other mostly don't function at all.

I don't remember hitting it or jostling it around at all in the ten minutes between using it, closing it, and opening it again.

Please help me out!

Hi! First time posting here, 2 things I guess I'd mention before I start, firstly English isn't my native language so excuse me if I don't make myself clear at some point, and secondly I am actually not looking to solve my problems with this thread, I am looking to get some more information about the problems I am facing, since I'm sending (again) my computer to get repaired, and I don't think they can be solved this way.

I thought I would share my recent adventure with a 3000 N500 I have. The laptop was special ordered with Xp Pro on it. I uninstalled and installed Ubuntu, worked great. At some point my wife spilled some soda onto the page up and down keys, resutling in those keys not working. Recently I purchased her another latop and decided to reinstall Windows Xp Pro on the N500 for use with some camera software I have. I decided to go ahead and order another keyboard from Amazon, for 21 bucks. I wiped the drive and used an OEM Xp Pro to reinstall windows. I was having some issues with sound and modem drivers and decided to go ahead and install SP3 on it to help out with the high def install of drivers. That worked great, but when I recieved the new keyboard Tuesday and install it, I noticed that some dual number letter keys were inputting numbers. I googled and was brought here where a number of posters stated several programs might be the cause. I searched and these programs WERE'NT installed on this, due to a clean install of OEM windows. This took me back to suare one, why. I'm very proficiant in PC's having built many custom machines and assisted others in repair. I decided to test the keyboard by using an flash drive with Linux on it. The keyboard worked like a champ, so that narrowed the issue to windows pr software inside it. Booting back to windows I started thinking that possibly an update inside SP3. I removed SP3 and rebooted and the keyboard worked great, no errors.... Read more

I am the owner of an HP Stream 11 laptop. Has been working flawlessly until 5 days ago I accidentally spilled some water on the keyboard causing it to malfunction. The caps lock broke for one after that incident. At first it was malfunctioning in a way that whenever I pressed the N and/or B buttons, those keys would somehow turn the caps on and off,but the caps lock key itself was non responsive. Even the LED light inside the caps lock button died. Also pressing the 'delete' key caused to turn on the caps as well. So after that, I went to turn on the 'sticky keys',and after that it seemed to work fine although the caps lock was still not responding. Then the night before last, I left my laptop on as I fell asleep ,and woke in the middle of the night to find out my screen's view was magnified by over 1000% and the narrator(which I left on) kept speaking out of control. I have no idea why it was like this. I did nothing to turn on the magnifier, and yet suddenly it got turned on somewhat automatically. Next morning, I noticed the screen was still magnified. Because of that it was hard to  see what was going on,but  I managed with my mouse to get it back to 100%. That time however none of the keys on the keyboard were working at all,as if it had been completely locked. None of the keys worked except for the Esc key which oddly turned on the screen magnifier window, and another window which was for Microsoft Windows support. Managed to get the onscreen... Read more
