laptop Lenovo G550 with win7 shuts down(crash) randomly

Question: laptop Lenovo G550 with win7 shuts down(crash) randomly

Laptop shuts downMy daughter has a new Lenovo G550 laptop. The machine shuts off randomly after boot. I installed on it windows 7 and 5 month everything works fine. I updated all the drivers and also i updated the bios. Laptop keeps shuting down...My daughter says when she plays games or when are too many windows open in internet explorer and torrent open the computer shuts down. She finds out that , when the proccesor is very much in usage( 90-100% ), laptop shuts off. The temperature seems not so high, i don't see any dirt in fan...Also in safe mode it seems that things go normaly. I get a kernel-power error : "The system has rebooted without cleanly down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding , crashed or lost power unexpectedly". Also i've installed again OS(windows 7) but the problem keep going on. Should i install another OS, like windows XP ? Or should i install again windows 7 cleanly ( with format the hard disk) and see what it happens? If it is OK i start to update, one by one, drivers and after this shall i try to install some applications(one by one to see if any of it can cause problems) ? Any opinion or help please ! Thank you !

Preferred Solution: laptop Lenovo G550 with win7 shuts down(crash) randomly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:lenovo u400 laptop randomly shuts off

Hi perrson22,
Thanks for posting and welcome to the community. At this point it is hard to say if it is a hardware problem or not ut we may need to check on a few things first.
Firstly I'd like to know when this issues started happening? Are you currently running on Win7 or Win8?
What I suggest is if you to update all the drivers on your machine from the lenovo support site and check for the changes then. Please go to the support site to download all available drivers for yor machine.
Do let me know of the results.

Hello,  Often when I try to bring my Lenovo G550 out of standby mode (by tapping on the power button), the keyboard lights up but the screen does not turn on. Tapping the power button again; tapping spacebar or enter keys accomplish nothing. The only way to get the screen on again is to hold down the power button, shutting off the computer entirely, and then turn it back on.  Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? Help greatly appreciated.  pm

Laptop information; G550 (product #2958) I received the Win7 64bit upgrade CD and Lenovo driver CD for upgrading from Vista 64bit to Win7 64bit. I chose the clean installation option. Win7 installed OK. What do I with the Lenovo CD for the lenovo drivers? I tried the Lenovo website scan program but it does not recognize the G550 laptop. I installed the Lenovo System Update program V4. It runs but does not identify any missing drivers. The Lenovo driver CD contains folders for G450 & G550 but no instructions and no master installation program. Inside the G550 folder are 10 folders. Question 1: What I do with the Lenovo Driver CD? It has 10 folders but no instructions and no master install program.Below is what is in each folder 1. Hi, first post on this forum.I've just bought a G550 and want to upgrade to win7 but when promted for 7 digit model type I don't know what to type. On the bottom of the laptop it just says model type "2958"  (if you don't consider the chinese lettering.)On the original packaging it says Model type "2958 (Lenovo G550)", in Vista it says "model 2958", in the BIOS nothing and the onlinesupport-serial-finding-link thing doesn't work at all.So how am I supposed to get those 7 digits?

Answer:Win7 System randomly shuts off and restarts - No BSOD, No Minidump

Please ensure that the system isn't overclocked until we finish troubleshooting.
Check the following for memory dump generation:

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service . I recommend Windows Live SkyDrive - or another free, file-hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file):

Please provide us with the reports from here - even though you're not receiving BSOD's:

So I recently bought a Lenovo y50-70 Notebook. After 2 days, when i upgraded from.Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and installed all the drivers it started to shut off at random times. When i was playing, using youtube, facebook and sometimes even why i just try to connect to a wifi network. It sometimes makes a pop sound when shutting off and sometimes it doesn't. It's not overheating, i know that.If someone knows how can i fix this, I'd appreciate the help. It's a brand new laptop that i don't even have for a week yet. Don't really want to give it in for warranty because i need it for work everyday.

Answer:Lenovo y50-70 randomly shuts off

Mine used to freeze, to a weird loud noise and then shut down doing a pop sound. After I upgraded the BIOS to v3.03 it did not hapeen anymore. It happened especially when watching YouTube videos, I also had a couple of BSOD: DPC_Watchdog_Violation or something like that. Since I upgraded the bios the issue disappeared.

I recently purchase and H530 Desktop and when it's left on for several days, it will shut down by itself.  Is this a common issue among these?  I've seen a lot on laptops, but not much on the desktops.

Answer:Lenovo H530 shuts down randomly

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Any of the Windows power saving options only deal in hours and not days so I doubt your problem is related to the Windows setting.  If you open the Action Center, click on Maintenance and then View Reliability History is there any indication of Windows not shutting down properly?  Do you live in an area the has an occasional momentary power outage ?  If your household power blinks off for a second that would be enough to shut the computer down and keep it off.  The other possibility is the computer on an electrical circuit that is control by a light switch?

Hello, Recently i've purchased a U410 Lenovo laptop. Work really great, no wireless issues, as a matter it has higher speeds than other laptops. Nice look and fast.Unfortunately i've discovered something wierd also on my first day with it. Randomly shuts down without any message or error., just turns off. I though it's a faulty driver, checked the event longs as saw some errors, i've corrected those and no shut down for a while. i thought everything is okay, so  bought the windows 8 pro upgrade, put it clean and with all the drivers from the site. worked nice for a while. then again the random shutdowns are back. there are a few warnings in the event long, but nothing serious.I would like to mention that i changed the stock HDD to an intel SSD, and the stock RAM to 8 GB Corsair Vengeance high quality rams. So these could not be the problem since it had problems before that too.I'm monitorizing the processor temperature as well. it's nothing unusual, its around 40-50 C when i do only browsing or something light. when something else is running it gets around 60C, but not more. the GPU temperature is also low, around 50 every time. So these 2 cannot be as well. I don't know about the battery. The wierd things is that sometimes it works for days or even a week without any shut down. Example i use it from 6PM until the morning, then i go to work and give a sleep. then again from 6PM until next morning, etc. for over 1 week and no problem. then suddenly after a restart or ... Answer:Lenovo U410 shuts down randomly

hi Bayernfan,
Here are the things that I would do if I'm in your case:
1. Check the stability of the hardware by doing a stress test on both the CPU and GPU - you can use Heavy Load and do a 15min stress test and monitor the CPU and GPU temp. by using Real Temp.
2. If the computer is stable & doesn't shut down after doing the stress test, I would run Windows Update to get the latest patches and bug fixes and observe the computer..
3. If the issue happens again, I would do a clean boot to check if there's a background app that's causing the issue and perform a malware scan using Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller to make sure there's no malware or rootkit on the PC.
Let me know if you get any errors:

Hallo, my name is yuval. So here is my problem, about 5-month ago I bought a new lap top of ?Lenovo yoga 720 15? 80x7? from ?best buy USA? and took it back to my country outside of the continent. When I first started to use it, it has an immediate major problem- ?no charging just plugged? so whenever I unplugged it, it would show me that I have no battery and shuts down without any notice. After struggling with the problem and trying to fixed it by myself, I gave up and sent it to Lenovo USA (I am not from the states so it costed me a 100 $ for the shipment). They fixed it and replace the batteryAbout a month ago I got the laptop back from Lenovo ? fixed and everything worked fine until a week ago when the laptop began to spontaneously shuts when unplugged but this time only when decreasing to 20-50 % battery. The charging works and when the laptop is plugged it won?t shut down at all.I tested the hardware with some of Lenovo?s software and everything looks fine I tried to use a temperature app and everything looks fine as well.I don?t know if it is software related or HW, really hope it is the first one, I saw that maybe it related to ?ME region? which I don?t know what it  is.I will be? so! Much grateful if some can help me with this problem. I?m a fast learner and can follow instructions easily      Sorry Im really desperate and run out money for another shipment to the Lenovo USA.

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hi, Since recently, my G550 started producing a loud screeching noise. It happens occasionally, and the sound is like a loud squeak. The laptop was collected from me and sent to the local service centre, but after having it back I can still hear the same loud noise. Has anyone come accross this before? Service centre people suggested it could be the fan problem, but found nothing and assured me it should work fine, but it doesn't.. Please help me with advice, do you think it is something to do with a harddrive and can it lead to something more serious in terms of the functionality??? Thanks in advance.

Just noticed there are no grippies when I unlock the Taskbar on my new (to me) Lenovo G550 laptop.

Any idea how to get them back?

Answer:New Lenovo G550 Laptop - no grippy when taskbar unlocked

I have a Lenovo G500 and can't recall any specific bloatware that interferes there, but it nonetheless corrupts system files which could be the problem with the taskbar unlock anonmaly.

If this is still the factory install you can try to Clean Up Factory Bloatware then check the system file integrity, but you'll have a much better install if you Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

HiI having a problem with the bluetooth on my Lenovo G550 serial number **** laptop. It came with  in-built Bluetooth software and drivers. It was working perfectly fine for several months. But, then recently a problem cropped up. Now, when I click the Bluetooth icon, click the adaptor on and then click 'Show Bluetooth devices', nothing really happens. The adaptor turns on and then after clicking 'Show Bluetooth devices, the search for locating bluetooth devices continues but no device is located. ( & this is when the bluetooth on my samsung mobile has been turned on).Earlier, it could easily located my cellphone. Similarly , if I try to browse files on my laptop by using the bluetooth on my mobilephone even then it doesn't work. I just get a message on the cellphone ie.  'connection lost'.I have carried several scans on my PC in past few days and the files always come out as clean so that's not a problem.I can't understand why I can't browse files when the bluetooth on both the laptop and mobile are switched on and both the devices are on discoverable mode.
Also, my hot key combination Fn + F5 does not show wireless settings menu now. However, it had been working fine for several months so this is a recent problem.
Please help. Thanks.

I have a BSOD 124, and 101 (Not 121). Intel 4790k, 32gb of Corsair Dominator Platinium, Corsair h100i, Corsair 540 air, 1200 watt corsair PSU, Dual 780ti SLI, Z97-A asus Mobo. This came completely out of the blue. I suspect the newest windows update may be the culprit. Nothing triggers these crashes. It'll run beautifully with BF4 and Dying light on Ultra for 8+ hours... but when I turn it on again, I'll end up locked out with no crash. Or, I'll have a freeze, then BSOD. But the drivers ID'd by my third party software are saying that HAL.DLL, ndis.sys, and ntoskrnl.exe are flagging. Each crash report also ID's Genuineintel. Tried everything so far, windows repair, all drivers updated, all physical connections checked, re-seated every component, flashed bios, etc. I also re-did my thermal paste, and my CPU is idling between 30-33C. However, it will randomly jump to 40C. I'm pretty computer literate, but very much so out of ideas at this point. I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows 7 Home edition premium if possible. I have all the crash reports available, and I will be monitoring this closely for replies. Thank you very much in advance for any and all suggestions/help! Also, yes my computer has an incredibly silly name due to a friend helping me name it.

Answer:BSOD 124 & 121 randomly after Win7 Update. Crash files included.

0x124s are usually generic STOP codes pointing to a hardware failure although they rarely tell you which hardware is failing. Lately we've seen ESET causing 0x124s so I think it would be best to follow the steps below then test the system.

Uninstall ESET and Install MS Security Essentials and MalwareBytes.

Make sure you uncheck the 'Enable Free Trial' box when installing.

Uninstall Daemon Tools, a proven cause of BSODs.

1. Uninstall Daemon Tools via Add/Remove Programs.
2. Download the SPTD standalone installer and perform the following steps.
3. Double click the executable to open it.
4. Click the button shown below.

If the button it is grayed out as shown in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system and you can just close the window.
Uninstall all of the ASUS bloatware on your system bar AI Suite.

Test the system and report back.

I have been trying to fix a friends Lenovo G550 running Windows 7 Home Premium. The laptop won't boot and gives BSOD error "STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x887925C8, 0x88792734 ...)" the codes in brackets change each time. It then does a crash dump and reboots.

There has been no new hardware or programs installed recently (apparently).

These are the steps I have taken:
Boot in all versions of Safe Mode (same BSOD).
Boot to Last Known Good Config (same BSOD).
Windows Startup Repair (can't solve problem reboots to BSOD).
Windows Restore (can't restore).
Windows Memory Diag (no problem found).
Removed one stick of RAM boot (BSOD), replace and remove other stick of RAM boot (BSOD).
Remove and reseat HDD.

My instinct tells me it is a HDD fault. Does anyone have any other suggestions or is the next reasonable step to buy a replacement HDD and reinstall Windows?

Thanks in advance.

To utilize the complete 8gb ram you would require a 64 bit OS, the ram your system uses is (DDR3 PC3-8500).I am not 100% sure that if your system is capable of handeling 8gb ram as many users have faced difficulties while doing so, but you can always try. Just to be on the safe side a 32 bit OS with 4gigs of ram is your best shot

Recently, problem graduated to red, blue, yellow specks all over the screen. Tilting no longer works, but I noticed a definite relationship with the degree of pressure on the case. When I push hard enough on the left spot below the case (where hard disk is located), the problem resolves completely. I also tried plugging another monitor in and there seems to be no problem either. Please, help.

My wife has been nagging me to address her laptop issue for a while now.  Can you help me?
The problem is that it shuts down randomly.  Sometimes it will go a few days and sometimes only 15 minutes before the thing shuts down. Although i wasn't really paying attention, it just happened in front of me.  The system seemed to go to sleep but when i went to wake the laptop, the system started up from a full shut down (i had to log in and all applications were closed.)  There are no special warnings indicating that the system had an unexpected shut down..
I had hoped that i fixed a similar problem on this system a year ago when it was also over heating.  No more overheating but still shutting down.
The system in question is a Samsung NP-R580 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  i3 2.4GHz; 4.00GB RAM.  We're running Norton 360 Premier for anti-virus and firewall.

This is a difficult question. I have an ASUS K72J series laptop that is over 4 years old.
My laptop shuts off randomly in high power demanding games (no warning/no lag). It is NOT hardware or heat. It is NOT the power supply. That really only leaves software but I am at a wits end trying to figure out what/why/how. I have updated all drivers and DriectX. The computer works fine - hours on end - but as soon as I try to play a 'heavy' game it lasts about 5-10 minutes and then shuts off. (These three games have triggered it - Borderlands 2, League of Legends and Farming Simulator 2).
This issue bagan about 1 month ago after I recieved my laptop back from a proffessional computer repairer, as I had my display cable replaced (this was a separate visit from the one where I had the thermal-paste re-done). I will stress that it had never happened prior to recieving my laptop back. However I don't know how that could be the cause - it was pointed out to me by a friend that It could have something to do with full-screen games and an issue with them that closes it, I haven't tested that yet by playing them in Windowed mode.
Here is some further explanation:
Power Supply: I have run Borderlands 2 on battery power only, AC power only and on AC + Battery power. Same shut down problem happened everytime.
Heat Issue: I know it is not heat as I had the heat-sinks and thermal-paste re-done. Also the computer place I took it too ran a stress test and had temps up around 90C (and i... Read more

Answer:Laptop shuts off Randomly

Hi Rinkashime,
So the computer place that seated and used the thermal paste, could be the issue.  Let me explain.
Asus computers in different models have this issue, and its usually after a repair.  More than likely the repair place removed the thermal pad, and replaced it with thermal paste.  Pads are the tops in GPU and Process heat transfer.  at 90C I would be a little worried but at 65C you should be OK.  Assuming that your device is OK with the connection of the Processor and the heat sink (meaning there are no air bubbles or gaps allowing it to surge, etc then I would look at your BIOS settings.
In most, not all BIOS settings, you can select and change the max and min shutdown temp for the machine.  Are these present?  If so are they sent about the temps that your device is throwing at you?  I would check.
Here is a overview of the Asus you have, including temps, how games handle and a given stress test they used.  Take a look at it and see if your getting the same numbers.  If you are not, then I would check the BIOS (make sure you keep it insides the guidlines for the processor you have, dont want to fry it).
I would then get the thermal paste or pad reseated and try it again.
From there I would need a lot more info on what your computer has, etc.
good luck

I have an hip laptop and it randomly shuts off. I want to try to trouble shoot before I call it a lost cause. Referred to some great threads on here before so thought I'd give this forum a try. Thanks ahead of time for any help. I have an HP Pavilion dv6500. It randomly would shut off a few months ago, got better but started up again. When it shuts off its sudden like someone pulled the cord on it. After it shuts off I cannot get it to start for quite awhile afterward (20 minutes to 3 hrs if not longer). I can push the power button and the computer will attempt to start but will do the cold shutdown in the middle of startup. Sometimes it can get as far as the windows log on and then shutoff. The shutdown happens at all times, no pattern in my activity.

The computer has some other issues, I can't run it without the power cord because the battery is dead (HP said its because I didn't take the battery out when I used the laptop plugged into the wall. Refuse to buy another battery if I can't get laptop to work). My 3 year old spilled milk on the keyboard and it was bad enough the milk came it the USB ports and battery slot on the bottom. Another issue is when I try to change the power battery settings, I can't change it past the lowest performance setting because the laptop overheats. It will shut down within minutes of changing setting. this seriously affects the performance since it has to run so low. But hey, it's a laptop and works for my bas... Read more

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts off

Wow, after spilling milk all the way through it I would consider myself fortunate that it still runs. To me it sounds like it is overheating. Laptops generally collect dust inside as they age and eventually develop cooling issues. I'm sure all the milk doesn't help. Have you tried opening it up and dusting it off with a can of compressed air?

I dont know what happens, is just shuts up, even if the battery is charged. It is a toshiba satellite, just 6 months old.
I dont know if i hit a key that shuts the system or a heating problem.

Answer:The laptop randomly shuts up

Get a can of compressed air and blow out all the fans. Then go to Control Panel/Power Options. It probably is set to sleep after 5 minutes of non-use without the power adapter attached to save battery power. You can readjust this if you like.

Hi,I've been trying help my sister with her laptop but can't seem to find what's wrong.Eventually I've tried fromating and using windows 7 (prof) insted of windows vista. But it isn't fixed yet. I have no clue what it could be, maybe a virus, maybe hardware,...It used to say software error right before it would shut down but lately it doesn't say anything it just randomly shuts itself down. Sometimes it has that problem 4 times a day and sometimes she can work a whole week without having the problem. She backed up her files and copied it back but AVG can't find a thing. I'll try some other anti virus softwares but I don't think that's the problem.system specs:Dell inspiron 1525OS: Vista home premium (in the beginning) / now Windows 7 (prof)Thanks in advanceJonas

Answer:Laptop shuts down by itself randomly

If her OS is 32-bit, I suggest downloading Core Temp and running it to monitor the temperatures of her processor.  I think eliminating high temps as a possible cause may be a worthwhile troubleshooting step.

Hey everyone,

I have two problems with my HP Pavilion zx5040us.

My first problem is that it randomly shuts off. I was thinking it was overheating so I took it to the shop where the guy put some silver paste in there to cool it and I even bought a laptop cooler.
As soon as I turned it on I used it for 10 minutes and it shut off again.

My second problem is that my laptop can only work with the AC Power cord. I thought my battery needed to be replaced so I ordered a new one. As soon as I put the new one in... it still didn't do anything.

I downloaded the latest BIOS update too. I better wrap this up before my laptop shuts off again. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a sony laptop that is doing something very strange. It is just randomly clicking and going completly off - and then automatically restarting.

This happens as I'm working on it and can be when I am doing anything. Typing, moving the mouse, there doesn't seem to be any one thing that makes it do it. But it does seem to be doing it more often.

I conect it with two different power cords - one at home and one at my office - yet it does it at both locations so I don't think it has anything to do with the power cord.

Please help!

i have a gateway nv52 laptop that randomly shuts off. I recently replaced the battery as i thought it was a power issue, checked the power cord its working fine. It randomly shuts off even with the battery charged. it usually does it when it gets hot, or when i try to install something from a cd/ portable hard drive. I took the entire laptop apart, No HDD, only RAM and CPU. I believe its either the RAM, CPU or the Motherboard. I strongly believe its most likely the cpu or the motherboard. Can i get a second, professional opinion on this, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts off

Overheating will cause a sudden shutdown to prevent damage to the vital components. it doesn't necessarily mean one of those components is faulty. It could simply be caused by blocked ventilation slots in the laptop casing, so check them for fluff build-up.

Also make sure all fans are actually working.

I had a laptop which would overheat & shut down if it was used on my lap for a time. My trousers were actually blocking the ventilation slots. Although they are called laptops, they really need to be sitting on a hard surface to maintain a ventilation gap underneath it. I guess that's why manufacturer's now refer to them as "notebooks" so as not to mislead us about how they should be used.

Hi guys,

So for the past 2 days my laptop will randomly shut down in the middle of working. I noticed that it shuts down when I seem to be pushing computer as in, if I'm playing a game that demands a lot of RAM or processing my data from work which again pushes the computer. But once the laptop turns off, if I immediately try and push the on button it will turn on and then immediately shut off, I have to wait about 15 minutes for it to turn on. Something to point out, right now, my battery is 100% charged but when I try to turn it on, the battery charge light lights up. Not entirely sure but some advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Windows Vista home premium
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60, 2.00 Ghz

Some history with my computer...recently I tried to uninstall my AVG in order to register some network stuff at my university and I was getting errors with that. For the past year, my battery would not charge beyond 60% but in the past month it has been able to charge to 100%. Nothing was done to fix that. In addition, For about a month or so, when I start to push my computer and open up several programs, it makes this "whirring" noise which lasts for quite sometime and then randomly will stop. That didn't change anything in terms of productivity or function for the laptop. But now it just turns off.

I'm having an odd issue with my HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop. Sometimes it will spontaneously shut itself off. First, the screen will go out. Next, the computer itself will shut down. This always occurs when I am doing something that requires a lot of resources, such as playing a game or watching a video (but only when the video is streamed, it handles DVD and avi files just fine). In retrospect, it's 99% game related.

I think it may be heat related, as if I try to boot the laptop after it shuts itself down, it will shut itself down again before startup is complete. If I let it cool down for a while and then come back to it, the computer will boot properly. As well, these shutdowns are always accompanied by high temperatures on the left side.

Running SpeedFan right now, the hard drive is at 64 degrees C, Temp (ACPI) is 92C, the processor is at 82C and the video card is at 105C. It does not recognize a fan.

I hope that helps. This is not my area of expertise so I've exhausted my options.

The computer is 2-3 months old, and running Windows XP (Home, I believe).

Hi there,

I have a problem with my dell laptop. It shuts down at random, and then I have to go through Windows Error Recovery when trying to reboot.

I have contacted Dell on numerous occasions and last week sent it back to them. It was returned with a new hard disk drive and heatsink. The OS was reinstalled with Windows 7 HP 64 bit.

The laptop seems to shut down when I am actively typing, into a search engine, and clerical work in Microsoft Office.

I have been trying through trial and error to find out when it happens.
1. When I attempted to go on the internet, it lasted 10 minutes and then binged at me and shut down(it always comes up with '10' in the address bar).
2. I disconnected the internet (IE8), went into internet options to delete any cookies, temp files and browsing history but again it binged a me and shut down.
3. Connected back to the internet and tried to get mozilla firefox, but just shut down. Then had to go through the windows error recovery.
4. Took IE8 off and loaded Microsoft office. Went into Publisher and it shut down.
5. Opened Microsoft word 2010, began typing. It binged at me again, the find and replace box popped up, then the save you document box popped up and it then shut down.

Any ideas? Does it sound like Hardware or software fault? Its only six month old and I'm having trouble gettiing anywhere the Technical Help rom Dell.

Hi and welcome to TSF you would need to run some diagnostics to test the hardware dell has it's own which model and number do you have ie dell studio 1734.The other alternate is to run seatools for dos on the hard drive and memtest 86 + on the ram, have you tried removing the ram and reseating it or tried starting in safe mode tapping F8 on booting then choosing safe mode with networking and see if it still behaves the same

I have a Lenovo Y710 Windows 7 32-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz, 1662 MHz 2.00GB RAM
and it randomly shuts down when using full CPU process at 100% (when using facebook and youtube and anything else gets to 100% process) I am pretty sure it is not a virus though because i already checked the computer for viruses o and also shuts down when i barely started up the laptop so how can the virus even load i already re installed windows 7 still shuts off and blowed the fan with can of compressed air even opened the laptop and cleaned the dirt off

Also i do not know but it maybe started since i tried over-clocking the computer but most likely i under-clocked to much with (NHC) program because now in cpu-z it says core speed at 997.2 MHz and in everest its says under the
Overclock > CPU Speed > CPU Clock "997.2 MHz (original: 1667 MHz)" so thats probably why its at 100% process with so little programs open so if some one can help me overclock it again thanks

Also in my motherboard name it says just "Lenovo Invalid" so i dont know what motherboard I have and I cant update the bios but its pheonix so i dont know where i can update it already tried the website but can not find where to update it

any help would be appreciated thanks

Also My core voltage is at 0.950V i dont know if this has something to do with the low performance but any help would be appreciated any time now thank you

Hi everyone,

I have a HP xf335 notebook, that about two weeks about began shutting down randomly for no reason. I and running windows xp home. I have contacted HP and have updated the bios, cleaned the fan vents, changed some of the recovery settings. Still nothing seems to fix this problem. I think that it might be over heating only because when I first turn it on it will run for about 20-30 minutes before shutting down. Once it shuts down, it doesn't stay on for more that 30 seconds if that. The bottom also seems pretty hot. But I can hear the fan running so I know that it is working okay. I then thought that maybe the battery was bad but it still happens with the a/c adaptor connect by itself. I even tried to discharge the notebook but it still happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this problem.

If i try to install a game it'll turn off, and It'll turn off if I try to watch a video. People have told me it could be my battery or fan. I leave my laptop plugged in to the wall so I don't think the battery is the issue, and I'm almost sure my fan isnt an issue. I can leave my laptop on for a long time without it turning on, I just can't really do anything on it or it will turn off.

Hello all, over the past year I could say I have been been getting a lot of random shutdowns with my Dell Studio 15. This can happen when I'm browsing the web, trying to play a game, or I leave my laptop on for a extended period of time (a day or more). I realize a year is along time to wait to solve a problem, but better now than never. My laptop is a Dell Studio 1555 running Windows 7 x64. Sometimes when I turn my laptop back on I can hear the fan running rapidly, yet when it shuts off I do not hear it. I believe these are due to heat and I just need to clean out my laptop. If and when I leave it on I come back to find it has restarted and most of the time there is a not a Blue Screen notice. Usually in this situation I just left my laptop on or I am streaming media. Sometimes it will Blue Screen but most recently, within the past few months it has not. Today it actually has produced one. Unfortunately I believe most logs are deleted due to my use of CCleaner and TuneUp Utilities, but I do have Critical events in my Error Logs which date back to 2 months ago.

I look forward to solving this problem. Please and thank you.

Hi, hopefully someone here can help me.

Recently while I was using my laptop it shut down mid-use and wouldn't restart.

It doesn't seem to be receiving charge from the mains adapter (no light on the charging indicator).

Eventually, after about half an hour or so it would allow me to turn it back on again with the power button, but after minimal use the same thing happened again.

This process has now happened several more times. After the shut down/crash I will not be able to turn it on again for an extended period of time (perhaps 30 minutes) and the laptop is completely unresponsive.

Once I do turn it back on however, almost any use will trigger the shut down. It will last for several minutes while I don't try to use it (I did manage to use control panel), but as soon as I even open a web browser the system crashes.

This may well be a hardware problem, so perhaps I posted it in the wrong section, but I didn't want to assume it was just a faulty PSU, as there seems there may be something trying it.

If anyone has any advice or ideas please let me know. I'm pretty competent on software, but not so great with hardware issues.

I purchased a Lenovo Ideapad U410 Touch Core i7 in October 2013. Until recently, I have had no issues with the lapotp and praised Lenovo's quality. However, a few weeks ago I noticed my external monitor would not function correctly when plugged in at times. It would appear distorted, grey, and fuzzy with vertical coloured lines, but it was quickly resolved with a few restarts. I have tried that external monitor with other computers with no problems, so it is defintiely not the issue with the monitor. As it progressed, my computer would start slowing down drastically, and randomly shut off. The random shutdowns were not frequent at first, however progressed until it happened every time my laptop was on (regardless of battery power or AC power). I have checked to see if it is an issue with overheating (it was not, I monitered with SpeedFan, and it never happened during heavy usage, it simply happened at completely random points in time). I got to a point where I was trying to wipe my laptop clean (suspecting it was a virus or something), and not functioning because the computer would shut down before I could do anything. I took the computer to a local repair shop, suspecting a motherboard failure (however, I had my fingers crossed). They got back to me indiciating they analyzed the motherboard (all hardware, they didn't touch software) and there were no problems, they told me that my hard drive was the problem. I have a Toshiba Satellite L645d-S4036 laptop. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1. Whenever I attempt to boot my laptop in normal mode it shuts down within 30 seconds of logging on. There's no bsod, no crashing, the laptop just completely shuts off. However, I can run my laptop in safe mode for any length of time; my laptop only shuts off when I attempt to boot it in normal mode (this leads me to believe that the problem is not a heat related issue). I've also run Kaspersky TDSS Killer, Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarbytes Anti-Malware, and Microsoft Security Essentials, and nothing was found, which leads me to believe it's not a virus-related issue. Also, because my computer runs in safe mode but not normal mode, this leads me to believe that the problem is in some way software related but I'm not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:[SOLVED] Laptop Randomly Shuts Down

I'm far from being an expert, I just want to help out. This is what I do whenever I get this issue.

1.Try to remember any changes made to your laptop before the issue came up.

Because if you can boot into safe mode but not normally then it could be a previously installed program or a corrupted/missing important system file. Not sure if drivers could be related to this. Any expert out there please shed some light here.

2. Have you tried the "Last known good configuration" option?

3. If system restore is enabled then Restore to a previous state. If you can't then you can try the next step that I do.

4. In the search box type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Go to the services tab. Check the "hide all the microsoft services". You will then see a list of services. You can uncheck then apply. Try to boot normally. If that doesn't work go to msconfig again but this time, you need to click on the start up tab. Unchek the start up items and see if that fixes it.

Note: It is important to uncheck the "Hide all Microsoft services" so that you will not be able to uncheck the important services that your laptop needs in order to function properly.

5. This last step usually fixes my computer issues whenever I encounter something like this, but I'm not sure if this will be the case for you. Anyway, if you have your windows 7 installer disc, you can boot into it and then choose the repair option there to repair your windows.

Hi Friends,
The problems with my ASUS laptop continue.  Before I call ASUS and waste time sending my laptop back to them for a fourth time, I thought I would check-in with the Best-Forum-Ever for suggestions.
Since spring, I have sent my laptop back to the manufacturer 3 times to address chronic random freezing.  On trips 2 and 3, they replaced the hard drive and then the motherboard.  When my computer was returned in September, everything was wonderful - blissful really - the freezing problem was cured.  It started differently, but it worked, and after losing no fewer than 80 work hours on fixing my laptop, I wasn't going to complain.  (after pressing the power button, it sounds like it's powering-up, then there is a click, and then silence.  It does this three or four times before it 'catches' and starts up)
About a month after getting it back, it shut down randomly, once.  Since it didn't reoccur (until now), I didn't really think much of it.  Today, it has shut down randomly a few times in the last hour or two. The screen goes black and then it powers down.   I suspect the trouble is only beginning.

I purchased a Gateway laptop (see specs below) about 2 years ago and haven't had any problems up until now. About two months ago, the laptop began randomly shutting down with no warning.
Searches indicated that the machine may be overheating. So I carefully cleaned the fan, heat sinks, etc. with compressed air. Didn't help.
Since it only powers down when hooked to a power supply (it never does so when using the battery), I bought a new power supply (exact same type that came with the computer). It seemed to work for about a week, and then the random shutting down started again.
The only other possibly relevant piece of information is that the machine fell about a foot from a table onto soft carpet a few weeks before this started happening.
Any thoughts on what may be causing the machine to randomly shut down? My thanks in advance.

So my computer keeps shutting down. I just bought a replacement battery for my computer so I don't think it's a battery issue. I read some previous posts abut Windows 7 not reading their battery status correctly and shutting off the computer with a 50% battery message. However, If my computer shuts off with the battery attached, I am still able to turn on the computer, run windows startup, and load programs. Similarly, my AC power adapter is still able to charge my computer.

I don't use up a lot of memory either. I ran my virus protection software and it said that my computer was clean. Additionally, my computer doesn't seem to be overheated and there's nothing blocking the fan.

Any suggestions for narrowing down the problem? It started a few days ago.

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts off with no warning. Please help!

Have you run a temperature program to make sure the laptop is not running to hot?

Such as this:

Speccy - Advanced System Information Tool

Please then upload a screenshot of it with something like the snipping tool.
Please follow the above tutorial, and if there is anything you do not understand-ASK

Do you hear any unusual noises?

Anything unusual at all when the issue occurs?

Ok I've been trying to do this on my own for about a month and I'm at a loss.  I have an asus u56e I bought from my brother.  When it's cold and not on a battery (ie I'm on the road in my car) it starts to load up then shuts down.  Then I power on again and it gets a little further then shuts down.  This goes on and on for several times till it stays on eventually.
I have diagnosed the HD, mem86 tested it (though I heard it only does my "first" stick of ram, I have cleaned windows up, did sfc scan, check disk, updated bios/all drivers, etc everything I can think of.  This is a basically clean install of windows 7.
I don't know if you can check the motherboard for certain problems, but google hasn't been helpful.  Caveat, he did spill soda on the keyboard and I ordered one from ebay, got in and replaced it.  There was random stickiness in the computer though not terrible.  It runs great once warm or on a power source.  The power button is a little rough but I doubt that's it.
Gotten 41, 51 etc error codes.  Makes no sense I bring it home not on charger same power profile no restarts.  Even in a semi warm car or cold car always randomly rebooting.  IDK what to do.
I'm completely out of ideas.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts off when cold. HELP!

All the residue from the soda spill needs to be removed from inside the laptop.  It can cause corrosion and shorting.
There is a good article here on how to clean a laptop after a spill.

Hi guys,I have an Acer Aspire One D257 notebook. It was all working fine until just yesterday. I plugged it in th charge and it just went black. I turned it back on, and the same thing. I then restored it to factory settings using Acer eRecovery Management, and all fine for about 30 minutes. Then it started again. I turned it off and plugged it in, and charged it up fully. Then I turned it on again, and all is OK. I want to use it plugged in though, as the charge doesn`t last long in it. Any suggestions?Help much appreciated,Spollen27

Hello, I'm new to the forum, but I have been following it for some time. I seriously hope someone will be able to help me.
Here is my problem: I bought a new ASUS laptop 3 months ago, and it was all okay until it started to shut down on its own ( about a month ago). I tried resetting Windows, updating etc then I replaced my hdd because a software diagnostics tool reported that there were bad sectors. I could also hear strange noises. I read that manhandling the laptop while it is running could damage the delicate workings of the hdd, and I had done that sometimes. Everything was fine for almost a week, then the computer started shutting down on its own again. It happened while I was working , keeping multiple programs open (twice, hours after turning it on) and while I was watching a video (10-15 min later). However, today was not the first time I watched a video, so the issue is new. It seems like it is gradually worsening. After it shut down, I tried to power it back on, but it wouldn't boot. The LEDs didn't even turn on, unless it was plugged in. When i unplugged the charger it shut down again immediately. After 3 minutes I removed the external power supply, and it kept running.

I have already updated the BIOS firmware to the last version, but it obviously didn't work.
ASUS PC Diagnostics tells me that the CMOS pattern test failed, I looked up possible solutions, but I wanted to ask before doing anything stupid.

Hello, I'm on a pretty new laptop, got it a few months ago. It runs fine, but the only thing is, since I updated to 8.1, my computer will randomly shut off on it's own from time to time. It took me a few times to upgrade to 8.1 without any problems (eventually had to restore to factory settings and update from there right away). It's not a huge deal, but I want to make sure it's not going to get worse or cause other problems. I'm uploading a .txt file with all my specs. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Since updating to 8.1, laptop randomly shuts off

Have you made sure that all of your drivers are fully updated?

Hi there! So my laptop has been shutting off randomly and repeatedly for a while now, I am NOT tech savvy so please speak simply and give detailed instructions! Thanks!!
Some details --
I'm pretty sure it's not a heat thing, looked at the temps with some app and they are normal.
I also performed a system refresh already and problem still persists in case that helps.
No blue screen of death - computer just shuts off as if the power is cut and I can start it up normally. Sometimes shuts off a few times in a row immediately after I power it back up, but usually just turns off randomly once every day or every other day.
I have an ACER Aspire S7, intel core i7, running windows 8, not really sure what other info is needed. Thanks SO MUCH for your help in advance!

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts down - NOT overheating

Oh another thing - sometimes my laptop shuts off while I'm using it, but sometimes it shuts down while it's sleeping. So I would close my laptop (which puts it in sleep mode) overnight, and when I open it in the morning, it's completely shut down. Thanks!

I have an ASUS laptop that I beleive has become infected with a virus that is randomly closing down the laptop & immediately re-booting it.

The laptop re-boots fine bar it tries to firstly locate a spyhunter fix rather than the option of XP or Vista. I can manually locate the XP option & then log in OK until the problem recurs. The laptop works OK for indeterminate periods of time & tends to shut down when opening or closing down a programme or a file.

It is for that reason I do not think I have a power supply issue or temperature issue which seem to be common problems.

I have advanced system care which suggests the laptop is in A condition & when it is on it works absolutely fine.

I am suspicious of the spyhunter fix which I think must be rogue. I am also unable to access task manager. A longer term problem is I cannot run the laptop in safe mode. It gets so far then just gets stuck. I accept that any help on here may be limited due to this particular problem.

Most solutions seem to require safe mode.

From googling my problem a suggestion of SD fix seems to fit the bill except that I have been unable to download this from ANY link. Again I am suspicious that this is part of something sinister going on rather than mere coincidence.
Any help at all would be appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance

Ok, so I am working on a laptop for my buddy's wife. It is a hp pavilion dv9700. Obviously enough the title explains it all. I have blown canned air through it and it seemed to run for about 3 hours in safe mode while I defraged it. Logged back on and tried to preform update to sp2 and crashed in the middle. Luckily it turned out just fine. I don't believe it's due to overheating because the bottom and the keyboard aren't hot, at least not compared to any other laptop. I have tried to replace the memory and it still happens. Anyone have any ideas? I'm so stumped. SystemInfoEdited.jpg picture by dragonpoet88 - PhotobucketHere is a link to her system Info. I had to edit it because she used her first and last name as the user. And also she actually has 4gb of ram installed, there is just 3 because I tired to replace it with my own as previously stated. Well, thanks for the help in advance.

I have read some stuff where its the thermal paste. How would I go about replacing that?? And is that a symptom of anything?

And when I say "shutting down", it shuts off. No log off screen, no BSOD (blue screen of death), just off.

And It's not when it's normally running when It's shutting off. It's shut off in safe mode and I have even seen it shut off on the screen where is says "press F2 to blah blah blah" when you first turn the laptop on.

Answer:laptop randomly shuts down not overheating

First we have to try and diagnose before trying to fix
I am starting with the assumption that it works ok in safe mode. If it does not we should look toward a hardware issue. I am focusing on software

If it works in safe mode try with a clean boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If it does not shut down, follow procedue. If it does shut down go to next step

Download and test for overheating (your touch the keyboard method is not a recognized overheating test) by using speedfan.
If it is overheating thats the cause if not follow next step

I guess this has to be done in safe mode, although no the best way. Download malwarebytes and run a full updated scan with that and your anti virus.
Negative go to next step

Go to event viewer and give me the codes and explanations of the various shutdowns.

When I close the lid to my laptop (HP Pavilion) it will sometimes shut off. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't do it. In the power options I have it set to "do nothing" for both plugged in and battery for when the lid is closed but still for some reason it'll sometimes shut down.

I'm not sure if this has been asked and answered before, but there are just too many threads to go through them all and a Google search didn't turn anything up for my specific problem.

Any help would be great!

My laptop keeps shutting down an restarting randomly. This happens when either on battery or when plugged in. I don't think it is from over-heating as the laptop is not too hot and this happens straight away when turned on. Also computer performance seems much slower and program are not responding. All windows updates are up to date and mcafee does not find any malware etc. on scans.

Appreciate any help,

My laptop is a Sony Vaio this is the model ->VPCF116FX.
Lately i've been gaming heavily on it, and its my first time leaving it on over night. Now the first thing you guys might think is that its an overheating problem, I can assure you its not as I tested it while monitoring my core's temperatures. 2 different tests, the one without a coolant the laptop peaked at a blistering 95c, like I said it shuts down randomly I can leave it on overnight without a coolant and then when I play for like 1 hour it can shut off. The fastest it shut off before was 3 minutes right after running the game I play. (It only shuts down while playing a game known as Aika) I doubt its also the games problem as how can a game shut off a laptop/pc. Anyways, the test with the coolant, the temperature is at a stable 65-68c, and it still randomly shuts off it could shutoff within 5 minutes, or 10 hours. (of playing a game, never witnessed it shutdown without playing yet)

a friend gave me a laptop and i was cleaning it up when it started randomly shutting off. first i was doing a cleanup and it shut down during a malwarebytes scan. then i rebooted and it finished. then when installing avast right when it started coping files it would shut off. when it shuts off its like your pulling the power out so there's no errors in the log or minidumps.

i tested the hard drive and its good. i ran memtest86 and after about 6% tested it shut off. i tried each stick individually and in each slot and it shut off on every one of them. then i tested the ram in another laptop and they passed. i left the laptop on all night long and it was still on when i got up.

i'm stumped. all i can think of is blaming it on a bad memory controller, but i think thats just an excuse that sounds good.

I think it gets too cold, now before you laugh lemme tell you what i've noticed on my laptop so far.

3 straight days in a row, when I use my laptop in the morning (when its very cold) and the coolant I use to keep my laptop even cooler, is a ghetto way by simply placing the latptop ontop an airfan. So for 3 days it shuts down randomly (no blue screen, complete shutdown) in the morning. Today the 4th day, I still kept it ontop the fan (for elevated free airflow on the bottom) but with the fan turned off, and it hasnt shut down at all.

What do you guys think?

I already know its not overheating.

Answer:I think I found out why my laptop randomly shuts down

I think you should stop starting new threads for your problems. You have already done so at least half a dozen times in the past few weeks.

Starting new threads for the same problem is a bannable offense:

I started having this problem about 4 days ago. I run my laptop with its power cord in all the time...wasn't doing anything and it had some stuff like AIM and word running and then just shut off.

I'd HAD problems with the AC power jack coming off of the motherboard before so I assumed it was a battery thing, but I hadn't gotten a battery warning. Wouldn't turn on...acted like it wasn't getting power even though the power CORD was lit up.

Took it in...of course, powered up for them and they found nothing wrong.

Has happened a few more times since then. Will just randomly shut off and then not turn back on. Sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes hours.

Can I rule out viruses and anything software related since it acts like it isn't getting any power when it is off and plugged in? (light should be blinking) Any ideas of what the problem could be? Hard to diagnose when the thing acts just fine at the repair place!

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts down, won't power up

I've been having the same problem with my laptop too. I have an IBM Thinkpad T23 and I've been running Speedfan recently and I've noticed that my CPU temp usually hovers around 154 deg. F or about 68 deg. C. I'm thinking that maybe it's the CPU overheating for the both of us. I've noticed that I can have it just sit there for over 3 days straight, but when I go to use it to write an essay or whatever, it'll shut off on me (The Prof. loves that one ). That's my reasoning on it.. and maybe that's why it didn't do that for the repair guys.

Hey, I've got a  annoying problem with my laptop and was wondering if I could try to get some ideas on how to fix it.Lately, my HP pavilion has been suddunly shutting down(in like the way it does when it overheats) what seems to be prematurely, with maybe about fifty percent battery(but it isn't always at this point in time), when I don't plug it in.  There's no indication of when it will shut down, no warning, and the laptop always indicates that there's still at least some charge left when it does. I don't think the problem is overheating as this doesn't happen when the laptop is plugged in.It takes the laptop to be plugged in for the laptop to start up again.I would try to drain the battery but its premature shutdown keeps me from doing just that. Any suggestions?

Hello I'm quite new to this forum and it looks promising. ( Let it be known I'm 16 and not very computer literate)

I'm here to post an inquiry about my laptop randomly shutting off mostly when I'm playing games. I have come to my own conclusion that it shuts down due to it overheating. As the back of the laptop sometimes feels and ranges from hot to extremely hot. (Not hot as a frying pan). So when it turns off, I take a normal stand-up fan, and let it blow against the back off my laptop. ( Sometimes when it shuts off I can't turn it on for a few minutes, sometimes I can restart it straight away)
I do own a cooling fan, but it may not work as well as it used to due some spokes being broken, but it still blows a relatively good amount of air. The games I currently play are, Chivalry Medieval Warfare, Garry's Mod and League Of Legends.

My laptop is two years old, with the specs here:

I encountered these random shutdowns earlier this year, however it's becoming more frequent and more annoying. I've researched around google/forums and people seem to have based others' problems due to dust being built up within my laptop. And a long with my findings I've found videos showing how to clean dust out of your laptop via Homemade Procedures.
I've also figured out a nice programme to find out the temperatures of the components. CPUID HWMonitor.

The computer simply shuts down randomly. I believe it may be due to something overheating. I hear what sounds like a fan running before it happens. Sometimes the fan seems to run a very long time, never shuts off. There is a soft sounding fan and then at times there is a louder fan that also seems to be running. Then suddenly, the power is off. No warning, no hesitation. Just off.

Sound familiar to anyone??

I have a Lenovo Y460p and it's been randomly shutting off whenever I get into game. Whenever it shuts off, it's like pulling the plug on a Desktop computer, it blanks out and doesn't restart or have crash logs, etc.

I've done my research etc, I've been having a problem, I know it's not overheating. The CPU is normally at 50 C or so and the GPU never passes around 60 C or so.

Even if I let the computer sit overnight and then I turn on the computer, it's fine when using Facebook, etc, I can have multiple tabs, spotify, iTunes, etc open without any slow down or issues.

So for example, the game I play is League of Legends, and the client functions fine, and the game will load in, but as soon as the game starts (I normally tab out of the game and browse the internet while I wait for the game to load), I tab in and almost 4 seconds later it crashes. I haven't had this problem before until just recently.

I'm running a 120W charger on my laptop, so I don't think the power input could be the issue. I have a dead battery also, so I've tried to run the game with and without the battery, and the result is the same.

*edit* forgot to mention my graphics driver is up to date.

Any ideas as to what it may be?

Answer:Laptop Randomly Shuts Off at opening of game

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Is the power supply an OEM Unit? Does it get hot when you're gaming?

Sounds like its getting loose or failing.

My Laptop is shutting off randomly . No warnings no nothing . It powers off as if i hit the power button itself . I usually just turn it back on . When i log back in the desktop sets up . No error messages or anything . This has been going on for the past 3 - 4 days now . I reset the computer's system which did no good . I feel the option left is to reinstall windows but i am afraid even that , will not work . My comp type is Asus Laptop 64bit with i5Intel .

Check all cooling vents are clear; surprising just how much "fluff" can accumulate there. Also that the fan is running properly. Is there a time aspect to it; as in how long is it on before it shuts off?Does it happen regardless of whether the battery in installed or not?Have you got any settings (even power-save options) that may put it into shut down? When you switch on again - does it go through the normal boot up sequence or just come straight back the desktop? Is it actually shutting down - or simply going to sleep? While the following are not for win-8x - they may suggest a few possible causes?

Hi,  I bought a new E5 575G-52XT Laptop just two weeks ago and today was my first time really using it on battery.  Twice within a couple hours it just randomly shuts off.  When I restart the battery icon still looks full and it works fine... until it randomly shuts off again.  I haven't done any diagnostics, but giving it the old touch test it feels completely cool (I'm only web browsing or the likes when it fails) so I highly doubt it's a heating issue. Obviously first thoughts are a faulty battery and I need to take it back...  Any thoughts?

Hi,Yes, it could be a bad battery, you could try a battery reset, might rectify it and if it doesn't help return it to the retailer.

I just got my new IdeaPad 11s i3 ultrabook, it works absolutely great when browsing the internet, perfect in fact; however as soon as I give it the simplest of tasks such as watching a programme on Netflix or Skyping someone in the Windows 8 optimised apps it will unexpectedly shut down, each time I reload it shuts down again but quicker. It isn't battery related the battery is fine and it certainly isn't overheating as it will happen after just 5 minutes of being on. It will even shut down when I try and play in browser games which work on my old pre-2000 laptop.I would expect more from a brand new machine and I'm sure there is something wrong in my settings which is making this happen, any insight into the reason would be valued very much.

My y510p fan will randomly shut down due the fan running at max. I could be doing as little as browsing the internet and the fan will spike. I've had the laptop for only 3months now. I have a cooling pad and I've had it on a flat hard surface. The problem will only go away if I take out the battery and just mash the power switch with the adapter for a while. It's reoccuring though, it will go away for a couple days then start acting up again. I tried looking up solutions and it says to clean the fan for dust but when i used compressed air no dust came out.

My laptop sometimes shuts off while doing stuff. I've had it for almost a year and it just started doing this the other day. Also, when I restart my computer it will hang before the Vista loading screen comes up, showing a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner. It's pretty annoying and I would appreciate any help.

Starting from around a week ago, my VAIO VPCSA35GG would randomly shut down (as if the power is cut off) then restart itself 3 to 4 seconds later. Sometimes it would happen after I'd used it for a while, but other times it would happen repeatedly right when Windows is just booting up, causing the computer to get stuck in a boot loop. I've ruled out many possible causes:
It's not overheating. I've monitored the temperature and the laptop would randomly shut down even when not in heavy use. Also, if the computer overheats, it would normally shut down without restarting itself after.
It's not the hard drive or the OS. The problem persisted even when I booted from an external device with the hard drive completely removed.
It's not the memory. I've done numerous memory tests and they never showed any problem. I've tried removing the memory card (leaving 4GB of memory that's integrated into the motherboard), but the problem remained. The interesting thing is that the laptop would never shut down randomly when I'm inside the BIOS menu or when I'm running memtest. In fact, after running memtest for a while, the random shutdowns would not happen again for a long period after (at least 30 minutes). The problem usually comes back after the laptop hasn't been used for a while (the next morning).
It's not the BIOS. I've tried flashing a new BIOS but the problem remained.
It's not the battery or the charger. The r... Read more

Answer:Laptop randomly shuts down, restarts itself 3 seconds later

What version of Windows ? 32 or 64 bit ? Just to be sure it also shuts down when on battery power without the charger connected ?

As it seems to run ok in the Bios that implies a Windows problem so run it in Safe Mode (with Networking if you want Internet access) and see if it still shuts down then. Safe Mode uses only basic drivers so it could help find the culprit if it's a driver problem.

I've had this laptop for the best part of two months now and it has been excellent up to now. However, it has now shut down completely 4 times within the same day - with absolutely no warning. It doesn't feel as if it has overheated but I'm only touching the outer shell.
Is there something horribly wrong or is there an easy fix?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Inspiron 15R 5521 --- Laptop shuts down randomly

Hi nitsuaj,
As the system is shutting down intermittently, I would suggest you to run hardware diagnostics:
Follow the steps below to run hardware diagnostics.

Restart the computer.
Keep tapping the F12 key on the Dell Logo Screen.
From the One time boot menu select Diagnostics and Press Enter.
It runs a test on all the hardware components.
If it test fails please capture the error code and let me know the error code, I would tell you the next course of action.

In case the test passes, follow the next steps. Check in Safe Mode with Networking.

Restart the computer.
Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
Press Enter.

Check if the computer is doing the same thing in safe mode with networking.
Also, refer this link for troubleshooting the fans and air vents:
Please check the functionality of the fan and post the results.

Hello everyone,

My laptop randomly shuts down during gaming. At first I thought it was my cooling, but after cleaning and monitoring the temperatures, it turns out that that is not the issue. My laptop also never even feels lukewarm, let alone hot.

My laptop is the MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro.

I've also made sure my new driver updates weren't faulty either, which they aren't.

Personally, I think it's a power issue; whenever I play a game (even WoW on the lowest possible setting, which is something my laptop can easily handle, since it can handle the highest settings with ease) my laptop randomly shuts down, and when it does, my adapter shuts down as well. My laptop refuses to boot up again until I unplug and plug my adapter back in. After that, it boots up like nothing has happened. There is nothing wrong with my battery and my adapter charges normally as well. I also checked if the adapter would get hot, but it's as cold as an ice cube. When this happens, nothing happens to my lamp, so I don't think it's the plug's fault. (The lamp is connected to the same extender.)

I have tried underclocking the GPU by -500 via MSI Afterburner, but it still shuts down with a temperature of max 54 degrees Celcius.

I know that once I start gaming, more power is needed. So what if my laptop, for some reason, suddenly receives too little or too much power? Is that possible? If so, how? Is there a solution?

I experience no shut-downs when not playing any games, so I can wat... Read more

Answer:Laptop shuts down randomly with cool temperatures

Would suggest trying another outlet, or even a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) and see if you get issues with a charged UPS as well. If you do, then I'd say it could be the adapter. Should be able to find one online.
