Lenovo S510P restarts after shutting down

Question: Lenovo S510P restarts after shutting down

This problem is not the natural OS problem where an application resists the machine from shutting down and hence the machine restarts...
This is differemt..
I had posted on this community earlier too, but no one seems interested to reply to my post..
Its high time to take some bold steps because its almost 10 months (my laptop is just 11 months old) that i am facing the same problem and no one from this community or even the customer care people are able to solve the problem.
If you are not able to solve the problem please atleast exchange the machine..

THE PROBLEM THAT I AM FACING IS DESCRIBED HEREWITH:
When I shutdown the laptop, the laptop starts automatically after 2-3 sec(it does not restart) after it gets switched off completely(the white led light on power button is off). This scenario is different from the normal restart where the led light is on all the time. Here, the led light goes down(turns off) which means that the laptop is turned off completely, but suddenly after 2-3 sec the laptop starts again..I am facing this problem from the second month of purchase. I am using DOS system, with 64 bit Win7. I have formatted OS a couple of times.
I was asked to replace the motherboard of the laptop by one of your Customer Service Centre, and I did so, but the problem is not solved. Although i have started facina a new problem of heating. The laptop heats up quickly and the laptop has restarted due to generation of extensive heat couple of times.
The laptop is currently in the Lenovo Customer Care since last 5 days for the above mentioned reasons.Serial Number of my laptop is **********
I am facing a problem since last 10 months and no one from Lenovo Community seems interested to solve my problem. Neither the customer care is able to solve the issue.

I feel sorry that I trusted Lenovo for their technology and their support..

You can view my earlier post in the following link:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/My-Lenovo-S510P-Restarts-every-time-i-S...
I mentioned about the role of RAM in this problem, but even after removing the extra RAM card, the problem still persists.

Mod comment: Serial number removed for members protection.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo S510P restarts after shutting down

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a lenovo S510P DOS with 8GB RAM(extended), and have 64-bit windows 7 installed.Occasionally, when i shutdown the laptop by regular routine, after shutting down completely it restarts again. This is happening since last 4 months when i bought this laptop from showroom. I have formatted couple of times but nothing changes.i guess its an hardware issue!! Is it because of the extra RAM that i have installed during the purchase. The description of RAM is: HYNEX 1600 DDR3 4GB RAM.Please help me with this, I am really fed up with this.. This is my first laptop, and I trusted LENOVO for its quality but the trust is now fading...

After updating from Windows 8 to Windows  8.1, I began to have some issues with laptop.I cannot shut it down, instead it restarts by itself and it takes it  about 4-5 minutes to do so..The only way to shut it down it is to use power button.I tried to disable fast startup in power options and the problem remained, for some people this option solved the problem but not for me.Later I decided to go to Safe Mode and to try to shut it down from there and laptop shuts down properly from there.I tried clean boot, also the problem remained. .I have no idea what else to do so if you have any adviceI'd be glad to hear.

Windows frequently shutsdown by itself (while closing my laptop)... and when I shutdown, it restarts itself... And my video options in skype frequently changes to Livecam avatar (and i have to change it manually to integrated laptop)

I have Mcafee Total protection and run MBAM once a week... and it shows no malicious items

Is this a windows vista problem or something deeper?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Ideapad s510 sometime in May this year. Currently, my battery does not even hold for 2 hours. The specs mention that the battery is sure to last for 4-5 hours and it will decrease upon usage. Unfortunately, I have not used it much and my usage would count up to an hour to a couple of hours per day. I use my laptop for writing and surfing and I do not do anything much that memory or resource consuming, such as playing games. I tried the gauge reset method a couple of days back and my battery improved only for another 30 minutes, nothing more. I would like to know if this is the maximum battery backup that this system would provide or is something wrong with my battery?? Is anyone else facing a similar problem ?? Thanks

About a month or two after getting this laptop, I have been getting frequent BSODs, I can't go a whole day without having about 2 BSODs. Most of the time, the bluescreen leaves too early before I can see the message but last night the message was "Data Inpage Error". To note, before the BSODs flag up, it drags and slows down almost to freeze point for sometime and then BSOD comes up. After the BSOD shows up for sometime, If I wait for it to restart itself, it just runs to an infinite black screen, I have to force off by holding poweer button and then turning back on to get it up again. I love this laptop, urgent help will be appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo S510P frequent BSODs

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Is the BSOD giving you an error code or message that may help identify the problem ?

Another option would be to just do a One Key Recovery and restore the computer back to its original out of the box condition.  The downside is the recovery process will erase the operating system so you will have to backup any important files and re-install any software that was added since it was new.  Page #20 of your model's User Guide will explain the One Key Recovery.  Here is that guide for your reference.......

To be plain and simple I got this laptop as a replacement to finish my college classes with. It connects to my home wifi (AT&T U-verse gateway), our college wifi (Eduroam by Clemson), and most other internet. It just won't connect when I visit my parent's home. I have tried their password, clicking the auto-connect on the router, resetting the router, restarting my computer, updating all my Windows 8 64bit stuff, updating my wireless driver, etc.The computer DOES connect via an ethernet cable. Interestingly enough my husband's Lenovo will also not connect. My iPhone and most other devices in the house connect to NETGEAR 33-5G even though the actual network is called NETGEAR 33. My own Lenovo however does not see any other network besides NETGEAR 33.

Hi, If it's not one thing, it's another! I feel like my laptop bought in 2013 is falling apart on me now all of a sudden! When it pours, it rains, basically. Not happy. 1) the cover cracked at the hinges a few months after I got the laptop. Didn't think it was an issue. Wasn't an issue until number 2 happened. I then put black electric tape across the cracks on the cover.2) the display is separated from the cover. I put black electric tape all over it.3) the right hinge is popping in and out. I keep popping it in and out. Can't really open or close it without the hinge acting up, so can't use it as a laptop, only as a desktop. That is really annoying, if you ask me. and now, for the piece de resistance: 4) the AC converter is no longer working. Where do I find an AC converter for Lenovo Ideapad S510p Touch model # WB12764324? In the meantime, I'm borrowing a Lenovo Thinkpad AC converter. I need to return it soon, so I need a new AC converter for my Ideapad SOON. Thanks, much.

Hi. I bought my lenovo ideapad s510p 4 weeks ago, it worked perfectly fine the first 14-17 days, but then it suddenly began spiking when I played the online moba League of Legends. At first I thought it was a problem with my router, got a new one, the problem was still there, then I tried lots of different advice from friends, but that didnt work either. Then I tried to update my network drivers, but the problem was still there. I then thought to myself, maybe this problem is only when I play this game, but I made ping test to the google server and i saw 11ms and then it spiked too 300+. I don't know what the problem is, but if someone could help me out it would be appreciated .

HI Support.I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S510p with WIN8 as a gift,  and now I need to reinstallt this with an operating system that they feel comfortable in using. It will be WIN7SP1.Is there any known issues with this version and WIN7 so I cant "downgrade" it to WIN7?Or do you think I will be able to find all related drivers to win7?Guess I cant buy image from you for this? Thanks for help..

Answer:Reinstall Lenovo IdeaPad S510p With Windows 7 sp1

hi Indigo_SWE,

Welcome to the Forums.

Regarding your questions:
1: As the drivers for Windows 7 are available in the Lenovo support site, downgrading the S510p to Window 7 is definitely possible. One thing to note though is that the Lenovo Energy Management for Windows 7 is not available yet so you may have some problems toggling the Fn key combinations. Check this article for more info about Lenovo Energy Management.

Other issues found by other users:
Windows 7 Combo Jack Realtek driver problem
Ideapad s510p driver problem Win7[

2. As most of the drivers are available in the lenovo website, you may also need to visit the maker of the device (i.e. Intel website for Intel Graphics driver) in an event that the oem driver fails to load.

3. AFAIK, if a certain unit only comes with preloaded Windows 8 standard, the recovery image.will just be Windows 8 standard. You may need to use a retail copy of Windows 7 to downgrade.

Regards

Go to Control panel and choose Power options.
Under System Settings, click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Ensure Power button settings are set to shutdown.
Look at the Shutdown settings and uncheck the box for Turn on fast start up.
Save changes and shutdown.

Another option is to go to Device Manager.
Under system devices right click on Intel Management Interface and choose properties.
Choose the Power Managent tab and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

The laptop can not receive a charge from the charger. I have tried taking out the battery and only having the charger plugged in but it does not allow the laptop to turn on because there is no power/connection going on. The charger connection to the laptop seems loose and it doesnt seem like it is staying in. To me it looks like the charging port is too far into the laptop now and the charger connection cannot reach that far inside to connect anymore.

You can try checking the actual DC IN Jack first inside your laptop.
You can refer to this maintenance Manual on how to get access of that part in your Computer.

If you think it is Defective you can check the part number on that manual and Call Lenovo to check on how to purchase the part or Check onlinse resellers about the part number and its availability.

Hope this helps

Hi themr2,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Just to verify, was there any display from the BIOS setup screen on the built-in LCD?
Turn off the laptop and use the Novo button (item8 page 74) to power on the machine.

This would show up the Novo Menu screen for BIOS setup option.
Is this screen visible on the LCD itself?

Update us how it goes.

My laptop was originally loaded with windows 8.  I updated to windows 8.1.   Had the touch screen feature until  I updated my laptop to windows 10 in august.  I have noticed some issues but the one i am most concerned about is the loss of the touch screen function.  Has anyone had a similar problem.  I see from the Lenovo website that the S510p  can support the upgrade.  Is some driver missing?  when I check device manager human interface device HID compliant touch screen it says it is working correctly and enabled.  Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.  I cannot undo the upgrade since 30 days have aleady passed. Thanks

Answer:lenovo s510p touch screen not woking after windows 10 update

Hi Huser,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

You can also refer to this thread which is similar to your query.

This issue might occur if the touch screen driver is corrupt.

Try updating the video drivers & reboot. Please CLICK HERE for drivers. You could also use the System Restore feature to get your computer back the time when it worked.

Hope this helps.

I've had by S510p for about two years.  Running Windows 10. The shift key started being erratic this afternoon.  When holding the shift key, sometimes typing letters or characters works and sometimes not.  When it doesn't work, it's simply a case of nothing showing up on the page.  It may work 5 times in a row, but then not work a few times.  This is particularly problematic for typing in passwords.  It doesn't seem to always be in conjunction with any specific keys (sometimes a capital I or an ! works, and sometimes it doesn't).  Any suggestions?

Answer:Lenovo s510p Windows 8 x64 bit doesn't boot. It shoes blue screen of death

Hi Joshua_22,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue  BSOD in your Lenovo S510p laptop.

Check if the HDD is detected in BIOS and also check if the boot priority is HDD.

Since you are unable to boot the computer and it is in a restart loop, you may have to create a bootable Windows 8 installation media and then perform an Automatic Repair. Or if you have the OS cd or DVD you can repair through the cd.

You can also try to restore the system to last known good configuration and check for the issue.

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

Hi all,I recently bought a Lenovo S410p and wanted to install Window 7 - Home Edition. I faced a number of issues - At BIOS level, then it refused to detect USB 2.0, then it refused to install latest Nvidia GEForce drivers (need to install some intel driver but no idea which one it should be!) . It was a nightmare! While doing that, I realized, my touch pad was a bit damaged, the buttons seem to be depressed, it was causing a ridge between the pad and the keys - quite annoying. I took it back to the stores, they did not have another S410p - Hence I settled for the larger screen S510p - paid the difference. Good service from Lenovo! Now back home and tried installing Windows 7 - All the same problems surfaced again. Tinkered for a week and no luck! Then I decided to clean everything up and start from scratch. Trust me it worked this time! I am not a computer geek but a normal user with very limited/basic knowledge. Let me explain what I did,I. How on earth did you get this working? I've just installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a brand new Lenovo Ideapad S410p, and NONE of the drivers will install properly without the machine physically locking up! They extract into the C:\drivers folder correctly, then after accepting terms and conditions, the install starts and randomly locks the machine. It's taken me a day just to get the Intel Chipset and Management steps done, but the LAN driver just will not take.

Interesting behavior from my machine the last couple days - the system won't shut down, as of last night (12/22).

Start > Shutdown, ctrl-alt-del and Shutdown, or even hitting the power button on the tower just restarts the machine - if I do a legit shutdown through Windows, it goes through the motions and gets to the point where it should click off, and restarts; hitting the button just restarts right away.

I've already disabled the Automatically Restart option under the system failure section of System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery to no effect; Avast, Spybot, and Malwarebytes all come up clean. I've installed or removed no programs for quite some time (and have no outside burning software installed at all), and the only software change at all would have been Avast's own update.

All searching has come up with elsewhere are several-year-old threads that talk about disabling the Automatically Restart option - what else can I do here?

It is a laptop that I upgraded a couple of years ago to Win7. It runs well 99.9% of the time, with one annoying problem. Any ideas on why, when I power it off, after shutting most down it turns into a BSD with some white piano key markings on it. It will evenyually turn off, but restarts

Answer:BSD at end of shutting down! Then restarts!

Post the Minidump files
Create a new folder on the desktop and call it dumpfiles [or something similar]

Look in c:\windows\minidump
Copy the last 4 minidump files to that folder.
Close the folder and right click on it and select Send To Compressed [zipped] Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.
Attach the zip folder by using the 'Upload a File' button.

Just recently, my computer has taken to restarting itself instead of shutting off.

I have tried changing the reboot bits in regedit, and I don't think it is wake on lan.

I have checked the system restore files and there are critical updates going back to about the 20th April but I can't remember when this started happening. Less than week though I think.

When I click on the shut down button, it switches off, and then just comes back on again. I have to shut down the PC about 2 or 3 more times before it finally stays off.

Any ideas please?
Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Answer:Restarts instead of shutting down

Paul Hi & welcome,

* Forgive us for not being mind readers. We need a few more details about your system .
Please fill in your
System Specs......

If these are filled in we know all about your Operating System.
It DOES help us to help you in a more efficient way.

* Go to User CP - Your Control Panel - Edit System Specs - Save Changes.

* Re the computer restarting.
1. Just a thought -
Start >Device Manager >Network Adapters>Right click each item listed > select Properties >Power Management >Uncheck the "allow this device to wake the computer" box (on each item) individually, to see which one might be the culprit.

2.The other possibility-
The BIOS code controls much of the hardware-level power management and power state functionality, and bugs in the BIOS can easily manifest themselves in this way.

Hi there,

I am running XP Pro. Lately it has not been shutting down at all. Just restarting. Another thing I noticed was that the other options have disappeared, such as 'hibernate', 'stand by'... When I select the Shut Down option in the Start menu, all I see is log-off, shut down and restart.

I tried to solve this. I ran sysdm.cpl, went to the 'Advanced' tab, and under 'Startup and Recovery' settings, I unchecked the 'Automatically Restart' option.

Then when I shut down the computer, a blue screen appeared. It said 'A problem has been found. Windows has been shut down to prevent damage' or something like that. It made me restart the CPU.

At the bottom of the blue screen there was some text. I am going to type it. Maybe it will help:

I will not be shutting down right away. Rather I will wait for your response.

Hello there.
Yesterday while I was sleeping, a thunder struck nearby my house while my PC was running. After that I immediately switched the PSU from 1 to 0 without trying to shut it down properly. Since then I cannot shut down my PC without switching off the PSU. To tell you exactly what happens, I press the shutdown button in Windows 8.1 normally, after that it shuts down for around half a second, turns back on for half a second and then again turns off for half a second. After that it powers back on. I forgot to mention that my integrated network card on the motherboard died after the lightning as well. My MOBO has some kind of electrostatic discharge protection as well. Last thing, when I booted up my PC for the first time after I turned it off by switching off the PSU, it said "Setting thing up for you" like I started Windows for the first time. I think this is what is causing the problem.
What do you think? Do you guys have any idea on how to fix this?

System specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-D3
CPU: AMD FX-8320 @ 3.5ghz
GPU: MSI 7790 1GB OC GDDR5
RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR3 2x4GB @ 1600mhz
PSU: LC Power LC600H-12

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Instead of shutting down, PC restarts.

Sounds as though you didn't have your computer plugged in to a UPS. As a result you have smoked your Mother Board. You can try to restore a back up Image, if you don't have any then do a restore to a time before the issue started Refresh or repair install or Clean install.

Hey guys, been a while.

Over the last couple of days, my PC has been freezing and needing a hard reboot, gave me one BSOD. Today it froze and upon doing a hard reboot, has started up, stopped before or at bios (Monitor didn't kick on) and then shutdown only to turn back on by its self 5 seconds later and shut down 5 seconds later in a repeating pattern. I had to flip the i/o switch in the back to get it to stop.

The BSOD gave me the Drv_IRQL_Not_Equal_To or something along those lines, which I took as a driver issue and reinstalled my GPU drivers as a clean install. The last thing I did before the issues started was update PUBG so I instinctively verified those files although I am sure that doesn't have anything to do with it specifically. But doing these things allowed me to play two games without issues strangely enough.

I will mention that it seems to happen while playing PUBG. After the game launches and I am in a match, it will freeze between 5 to 7 minutes into the game. Today it froze while I had the game in the background while I was waiting for some friends to finish their game, which means it can't be just the game anymore.

Is this a sign for a new pc?

My problem with my computer is that, whenever I press the shutdown button when it says "saving your settings" instead of shutting down it restarts (reboot).

I searched the net and find a temporary solution. I've searched to uncheck the automatic restart on Startup and Recovery. I restarted the system and I got this BSOD.

STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error)
The Windows Logon Process System terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down
I'm not a techie guy. So I dunno what this means. Someone help me what to do please?

I also searched Microsoft Support and it says it has to do with Terminal Servers. Samba 2.0. But I don't think I had installed that kind of program. (Samba)

Please help me. All I want is a safe shut down process and not rebooting. I appreciate your help.

Answer:Computer restarts instead of shutting down

If you still don't have XP SP3 installed follow these instructions:
1. Go to safe mode by pressing F8 when booting up
2. In safe mode, click stark>run and type in msconfig and hit enter
3. Under general tab select Diagnostic Startup and hit apply and restart your computer in normal mode
4. After restarting your computer, if internet is working, do windows update and install SP3
5. After restarting your computer, if internet doesn't work, go to msconfig and under services, enable only the obvious microsoft services and restart
6. Once done with SP3 install, your computer should be good to go. You should be able to configure Normal Startup in msconfig.

I am experiencing a similar problem to the other threads discussing this, but I have already disabled the automatic restart in the system failure box. The only burning program is Nero, and that was installed years ago. No new programs have been installed recently.

Potential solutions such as M916719 no longer seem to exist - the hits from Google are from forums (including this one) discussing them at least two years ago.

Ideas/advice please?

Have a problem that randomly just popped up. When going to shut down my PC, all the applications close fine, the PC then shuts down and about 2-3 seconds later it turns back on with the fan blasting, beeps, and starts up windows. The only way I can properly shut down is to pull the plug or do a hard shut down.

specs on my pc are as follows:

Dell Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4 GB memory
GeForce GTX 460
Windows 7 basic

Answer:Windows 7 PC restarts instead of shutting down

What method are you using to shut down the PC? Are you doing it via the Start menu, or are you pressing the case's power button? If it's the latter then perhaps your power button is mapped to Restart instead of Shut Down.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while ago for the most part it works fine, but one day it stopped being able to shut down properly. When I tell it to shut down it does actually shut down but only for a second before it starts restarting. This problem has been going on for 2-3 months now.

I've tried a number of things including:

turning off fast start-up
making sure the power off switch is set to actually turn off the computer (in power options)
unplugging the battery for a while to let it reset
buying 3rd party software which claimed to fix the issue
using the console commands
unplugging all the USB devices and turning off the Bluetooth
reseting the PC (keeping my files though)
starting the computer up in safe mode and then trying to restart it from there

For reference I'm using a Lenovo E540 Edge which I upgraded from Windows 8.1 earlier this year. The only way to turn my computer off at this stage is to do a hard reset or let the battery run out (not ideal).

Please help - I've been scouring the internet with no luck and I really hope I'm just being a dunce.

Answer:Windows 10 restarts instead of shutting down

Have you ran sfc /scannow, chkdsk /f, or the DISM fix? DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums

When you turn Fast Start off, you also have to go into the Command Window and terminate Hibernate with powercfg /hibernate off The only other thing would be something hanging up, which you can force items to kill with The Windows Club Ultimate Windows Tweaker. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultima...r-4-windows-10

The other is simple by just going back to a restore point before this happened. Just be aware that any updates or software can be removed during the process.

I just spoke to my daughter at college who is having trouble with her Acer laptop, running XP SP2, Intel Celleron, 2GB RAM, and using Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. When she clicks "shut down" the laptop appears to shut down, but then restarts. "Restart" is not selected. I did a Google search and found a known problem with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 and with Direct CD 5.0, but as best I can tell she has neither program installed (she looked in "programs" folder, and in control panel under "add and remove programs" and couldn't find either listed). I also had her right click "my computer", "properties", "advanced", "startup and recovery - settings", and uncheck the "automatically restart" box in "system failure" section. But her laptop still restarts at shutdown. Any suggestions? (She's away at college, so I'm going to have to try to help her remotely - so it may be a slow process getting answers back to you). Thanks.

I have'nt been on here in months and have kinda forgotten which forum this should go in.
If this is the wrong one then I apologise.

I have a 6/7 year old PC. I'm using Windows ME.
In the last 3/4 weeks, each time I go to shut down my PC, it goes through the motions and then restarts as if I had hit the reset button. It's not the end of the world but it is becoming a bit annoying. Any ideas?

I have run AVG Free, Spybot and Ad-Aware and they've all come up clean.

Answer:PC restarts insted of shutting down

There can be a few reasons for this. I think the main one is incompatability issues with regards to drivers, software or plug and play devices.

Have you installed anything new recently, or when the problems started? Or updated drivers? If so you could try uninstalling these or rolling back the drivers.

You could try using a tool that forces a shutdown. This is one from karens website that manages various shutdown functions. I use it so I can keep the sutdown etc icons on my desktop. (Not sure if it works with me though, if not google search for forcing shutdown software and you should be able to find another.)

Let us know how you got on. I`m sure we can fix it.

Hi,Since the last 2-3 days I am experiencing a problem with my notebook that it restarts when I try to shutdown but with what I have noticed is that it only does this when it has been previously been put in sleep mode and once the restart occurs and then when I shut it down it does so normally. Plus I have also noticed that sometimes Windows doesn't recognize that the notebook has been unplugged and should change to the power settings for battery power and this goes for when I plug it in as well, it just doesn't respond to being plugged and unplugged. Any help is appreciated.Regards,

My new ASUS laptop will not shut down. I saw a thread a couple of days ago where a Richc46 said to try disconnecting the internet connection and then trying to shut down and if that worked he knew how to fix it. However, the thread ended there. I tried this and disconnecting the internet connection worked. Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem. I think Richc46 said it was something to do with the device manager, but I may be remembering that wrong. All of the other shut down menu options work (hibernate, sleep, restart, etc), it just won't shut down and restarts instead.

UPDATE: I had tried the disconnection of the internet and it worked and successfully shut down ONCE. I just tried it again and it is restarting like it had been, so it's not as easy as just stopping the internet connection.

Answer:ASUS laptop restarts instead of shutting down

Hello amigraarm and welcome to Seven Forums.

You may find there are several possible reasons why a computer restarts after shutdown. I'd suggest going through these Microsoft forum threads. Before attempting any of the suggested fixes it would be a good idea to create a restore point (or even better, a system image) just in case things get worse than they are.

Bought this notebook with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. Upgraded to Windows 10.Problem is that the notebook is shutting down by itself with no known reason, often when browsing some webpages. It looks like hard shut down, when you hold power button for several seconds and mashine is shutting down, symptoms are the same. Then mashine starting again as usual with no error message and no restored sessions.Tryed to initialize all notebook. Then few days was working "clean mashine" on Win 8.1 again. After upgrade to Win 10, it shutting down again. There is no rules when it can shut down. It can happen after a month or after a few days, so it's not possible to say that problem cause is a Win 10 upgrade. Sure that not overheating problem. Ran a several Lenovo Diagnotics tools and all is "green".

A number of Windows 10 users have various shutdown-related issues. The most common issue is that their PC reboots instead of shutting down. When they click shut down in the Start menu, Windows 10 doesn't shutdown, but instead restarts. Here is what you can do to avoid this issue.

Actually, it is hard to tell what is the exact cause of such behavior, because the reason can be different from PC to PC, but in this article we will explore some solutions which can be helpful if you are facing this problem of your PC rebooting instead of doing a shut down with Windows 10.
1.The first thing you have to try is a clean boot. Using a clean boot, you can find if the OS is damaged by some third party app or a bad driver. By preventing them from loading, you can exclude the influence of these two factors.

Answer:Fix Windows 10 reboots (restarts) instead of shutting down

No problems here, what is a bit funny as this is coming from a third party tweaker app site which can be the cause, but informative.

Hi!

I have an ASUS X-54C laptop with 2 GB RAM, running Windows 7 Home Premium that came installed. This is a spare machine I use only for surfing, when my Desktop PC is being used by other family members. I recently added another 4 GB RAM and also intend replacing the installed HDD with an SSD to make it more responsive.

The laptop is up to date with Windows updates and is regularly scanned with Nod32 Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes AntiMalware software.

My problem now is, after I am done using the laptop, I choose to shut it down.
Windows says, "....logging off,......shutting down.... and then restarts!

Before installing the SSD, I thought it a good idea to defrag the hard drive and then clone it to the new SSD. I downloaded a trial version of Vopt9, a defragging utility, which I have used in the past with no issues. This time, I think, using this was the cause of my 'restart' problem, but am not sure if it really is. The defragger also seems to have removed all my restore points, so there is no going back to one of these points.

I thought may be the laptop fan wasn't working. But Real Temp software shows my laptop to be running at a cool 50-52 degrees. I am doing a hard power off to shut down.
I also ran Hijackthis and analyzed the log into an Analyzer that is available on hijackthis.de website. It did not raise any threats. I can post the log here if it will help.
No idea what to do next, so any help in resolving this problem... Read more

My new Thinkpad L540 is working correctly, except that the only way to shut it down seems to be holding the power button for four seconds. In particular, If I turn the laptop off normally from my OS (by pressing the power button or entering some command), the laptop shuts down properly and starts again after a second. If I press the power button when the laptop is booting (on the Lenovo logo), the same happens. If I turn off the laptop by pressing the power button for four seconds after booting and the power cable is on, the laptop also turn on.If the laptop is off and I connect the cable, the power button blinks a few times but this time it doesn't turn on.Any ideas of what may be causing this? Also, when I try to suspend the computer it also resumes immediately. I guess these two issues may be related.

Answer:My Thinkpad L540 restarts immediatly after shutting down!

Hi Mfixman,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with System auto restart on giving Shutdown command on ThinkPad L540.

1. Click Start->regedit, once the Registry Editor appears.
2. Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Double Click on "PowerdownAfterShutdown"
4. Then, Change it to "0" if it is "1" OR Change it to "1" if it is "0". And hit Enter.

Then restart the computer and after it restarts try to shut down again.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Hi folks.

My PC which I built myself about a year ago has suddenly started blue screening, and also when I shut it down (from the start menu) it shuts down, and then starts itself back up again!

When it started to do these two things I hadn't changed anything on my pc, or installed anything new, I was just working one day, my screen went blank (with the exception of a few vertical coloured lines) and then blue screened. Ever since then it has blue screened every couple of days, and I have the shut down issue every time I try to power down.

I have tried a few things I have found on forums (disk checks, shutting down with internet cable out) but I'm really struggling here. I have also booted in safe mode then shut down but I get the same issue, and I have also tried a clean boot but it still happens.

I have also completely re-installed windows twice on it, but it continues to do the same.

I'm thinking something is on the way out which is fine (I do use my pc a hell of alot), I just need to know what.

Attached is the latest mini dump.

Thank alot for any help you can offer, really appreciated.

Dan.

I only have my laptop last may.
I set what the power button does.
I selected shutdown for both plugged-in and on battery.
I press the power button and it did shut down, but restarted itself after 2-3 seconds and ask for my password and it only shuts down finally after the second time.

Recently, same thing happened but 3 times to actually and totally shuts down the laptop.
AND just tonight, as i am writting this and before i shutdown the laptop again, i actually did it 4 times already because it restarted ITSELF 4 TIMES and i did not actually pressed the power button but went to the start button and selected that little arrow and clicked shutdown.

Your advise, if any is appreciated.
PLEASE.

Answer:Satellite P300-156 restarts automatically after shutting down

For the thing with your start button. You have to set this in energy options too.
I use this too, and it is working quite well.

So, you're shutting down your notebook mostly by using power button of your machine, right?
Ok, set the two power button options in energy options to shut down and energy safe button to do nothing.

This works for me, so may you check it out.

I'm having a problem with my laptop. I run Windows 7 Professional 64bit on it. An hour and a half ago I shut down my computer and Windows installed an update, but I stuck around because I wanted my computer off and I know that the computer restarts itself after installing an update. The computer restarted itself and configured the update, but when I chose to shut down the computer it actually restarted itself. I've tried shutting it down several times, but every time it starts right back up. I've run a virus scan, the Power troubleshooter, disabled automatic restart upon System failure, and searched Google and Windows help files for similar-sounding problems, all to no effect. My attempts to fix the issue so far represent the extent of my comfort in dealing with computer issues by myself, so I found this forum and decided to ask for some help. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer restarts instead of shutting down after Windows Update.

Are you shutting the computer down by pressing the power button or by using the start > shutdown method?
If it is by pressing the power button, have a check to see what the power button is set to do when pressed.
(Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Power options > Choose What the power buttons do)

If this isn't the case,
I've experienced this problem and fixed it by clearing the CMOS. (Removing the CMOS battery, leaving for 10 seconds, then placing it back in.)

Im using Windows XP, and for the past few days whenever i try to shut down the PC, it restarts instead of shutting down. At first, i thought i might have clicked Restart instead of Shut Down accidently, but that didnt seem to be the case. Although, the PC shuts down in the second attempt.

Anyone knows how to solve this problem ?? Help would be gladly appreciated.
