I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Using the power adapter from idea u460 to idea u310 touch

hi abeltran,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, do you have these AC adapter specs:

IdeaPad U310 Touch AC Adapter
Ideapad U460 AC Adapter

If both adapter have DC19V, 3.42A then you should be okay.

My laptop's screen has been flickering a lot for the past 3 months. There are no color changes. But there are lot of lines displaying that move up and down the screen and make it difficult to read. When I plug in the laptop to an external monitor, I still see flickering on my laptop's display but there is no flickering on the external monitor. So, my guess is something's wrong with the LCD. FLickering occurs occasionally and when it occurs it flickers a lot. It happens even during the boot load process. So, I doubt if it has got anything to do with graphics drivers. It stops when I try to tap on the table on which the laptop is kept, or if I hit once on the lcd screen. My laptop is 2.5yrs old. Can anyone help me with what I need to do?

My power adapter to my Y500 Idea pad is messed up. The wiring inside must have gotten damaged somehow and is now faulty. It only charges my laptops when angle in certain positions, or goes in and out. It's the 170W AC adapter one, but is there really a difference in using one of the small Wattage Adapters? The 170W one is just way out of price-range for me so I'm looking for one of the cheaper versions. I found one online that is "Y500 AC Adapter 90Watt 19V 4.74A". Would that work with my laptop?  I don't understand how different wattages affect my laptop (I'm assuming it affects charging time) so any help is appreciated. I generally keep my laptop plugged in with the battery removed, so I don't have to worry too much about charging the battery, if that's any help.Thank you!

This pc was bought nearly a year some ago, it had been dead for multiple times even since several months ago, sometimes the mouse cursor became a circle running, sometimes the screen frozens, sometime my pc screen went black,I heard abnormal noises coming out of my pc hardware but not sure which of it is problematic.Anyway I finally decided to onekey recover my pc, and it was successfully recovered, however my screen frozens again in the initial setup procedures when I was almost finished registering my name and new password, then it turned to black screen, a window of boot menu and app menu then shows up, not knowing the meaning of it, I am now stuck here, and I am helpless, been looking for helping thread over the Internet, but there are too much informations out there that are really helpful for me, I really wish if some of you who experienced the same problem can share your methods that solved your problem, I really would like to attach a few screenshots showing my pc screen, as a first time user, I beg for your understanding and excuse my English, thank you everyone

Answer:My idea u310 Pc has recently experienced slow running system.

Hi JerryChicken,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system is very slow.

Try to perform a power drain by removing the external devices and try to power on the system by novo button and check for the issue.

Also try to run the diagnostics and check for the issue as this will help us know if there are issue issues with RAM or HDD.

Also try to remove the HDD if possible and check if the system boots to the BIOS.

Also try to run the antivirus and check if there are any bugs in the system.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

Dropbox + Sugarsync - running both at the same time - good idea or bad idea?
Will they both be thrashing my machine and eating up lots of CPU like a hungry monster?

Thanks
OM

Answer:Running Sugarsync + Dropbox at the same time - good idea or bad idea?

You can be specific about what each actually synchronizes so I don't see that as a CPU issue. However if using both over the Internet with one of the more substantial data plans to sync, I would wonder which gets priority or how well they share the upload bandwidth. Wouldn't be so good if one was always grabbing it to sync in the off-load times and the other just kept waiting and waiting for its turn.

Answer:Mouse multi touch out of service Idea pad G400S

Hi Fernandesl,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that Multi-touch feature is not working as expected in your G400s Laptop even after re-installing the Touchpad Driver in the computer, as per the image you have attached the Hardware is not getting enabled as the option is graded out, I suggest you to the Flee-Power in the computer, below are the steps to perform the same:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
Then check by disabling and then enabling the Touchpad pressing Fn+F6 together.

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

I was walking through Best Buy the other day and noticed somthing that I havnt seen before or paid much attention to so if this is somthing that has been discussed before then pardon me.
HP has a few systems out that ship with touch screen monitors.

Do you think that this is somthing that can become a norm in desktop computing ? I personally think that it is cool, but as far as functuality goes there is really not a point. The monitors that I played with where really kind of had a touchy touch interface and it really didnt seem as I could do anything faster with my finger on the screen than I could do with a mouse. In my opinion, mouse control was probably twice as fast.

The only real application that I could see a touch desktop monitor used for is hands on applications for children such as paint and a few games designed around the concept or for somone that has a disability that does not let them grip a mouse functionally.

Touch panals do have their place in industry as it makes very quick work for bar tenders to select a inventoried item or any retailer/resturant for that matter or for such things as time clocks at factories so I am for it in that aspect.

I guess I just wanted some views and insight on what everyone thinks of this new concept to desktop computing and what pros and uses you can come up with.

Thanks

Answer:Touch Screen Desktop Monitors A Good Idea?

Hi

In the EPOS industry touch screens are standard and work best as they eliminate the keyboard which is a weak point in security, as users like to press buttons and those who are savvy can use the keyboard to do things that we as a supplier dont want them to do.

As for home use i cant see the practicality of them, no left click to start with, like you said unless someone builds a program designed and workable for a touch screen then its a no starter.

I turned off hibernation but my computer still goes into "sleep" mode-- which really shuts down.  Instead of sleeping it shuts down. So I lose all windows and any work on my computer if I walk away for 2 min. I even changed settings to not sleep for over an hour, and it still "sleeps" after 2 min.

As you have mentioned that the system does not goes to sleep, does this issue occurs when the system is plugged in or it happens only when battery connected?

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

I presume that you have got preinstalled windows 7 System, Which you upgraded to Windows 8 now you have downgraded to windows 7. I have few questions & suggestion
How you downgraded to windows 7 using Recovery System or using windows OEM Disk
I am presuming that you have used the OEM disk, I would suggest you to use the OKR feature to restore to factory default by press F11 button during Post i.e.. When Lenovo Logo is displayed and follow onscreen instructions

Have you created a set of recovery media? If yes you can use these to recovery your system

Note: Before using above steps please ensure you have backed up your data

Hope This Helps
Cheers!!!

A walk around is to have your bios modded. However, there is possiblity that it will not work and render your unit useless. Another walk around that avoids the modding of the bios is to use a usb dual band dongle. This will make your connection available in 2.4 or 5 Ghz without problem.

I have a lenovo ideapad yoga 11s. I want to leave it there all the time, I'll connect it to the laptop when I need to charge the laptop. The reason being is to avoid sparks/arcs that occur whenever I plug in the adapter to the wall outlet. Is it a good/safe idea?

Answer:Is it a good idea to leave the adapter plugged in ...

Yes, it won't run at Max performance likely without it plugged in or for long. You can set the battery charging as below which stops at 60% which extends its life we're told. When you need the max runtime just check the other radio button.

Hello Lenovo Community, I own a Lenovo IdeaPad P400 Touch laptop. I got it last year around October. At the start of 2014, this laptop has had a lot of hardrive issues. It would randomly crash and become unfixable. So I have sent over my laptop for repairs 3 times. Same issue. Anyway, I am not sure if this has anything to do with my charging issue. Real charging issue from the beginning:I recently received my laptop from repair last week. I booted and so forth and noticed it wasnt charging. I thought it was possibly my charger so I called the IdeaPad help desk. The specialist remoted into my computer and thought it was probably a battery firmware issue and decided to install it and run it, (link to driver http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-p-series-laptops/ideapad-p400-... The specialist ran the program and started the process. The program concluded that the new firmware was already installed and required no update. Eventhough the man was certain that it might have been the solution. Before I stopped speaking with the specialist, I plugged in my charger and noticed it was charging. I told the man but then it stopped charging as well as the power button light, power on light and battery level indicator started to flash together. I did not know what that meant, and neither did he. After a while it started to charge completely witchout it doing that weird thing. To this day, I can have the laptop charging for a good 5 m... Answer:Idea Centre K210-57078915 Changing to a wireless Adapter

I believe what your are refering to is a wireless receiver.  They make any number of them from USB receivers to the ones that install into your expansion slots.  I installed mine into where the modem was.  Open the case (do not have it plugged in.)  pPull ouot modem card.  And i just put in my old wirelss card. It's a 5 year old Belkin card but gets the job done.  If your looking for a card i recomend tigerdirect.com or newegg.com

I'd like to extend the range of my laptop so that it can connect to my wireless router about 50 yards away. Answer:Installing second range booster wireless adapter - good or bad idea?

Hi Wolfie!

Open Network and Sharing Center. On the left, click change adapter settings. Right click on your built-in WiFi adapter and disable it. Then you should be good to go to install the USB WiFi adapter. That is how you can switch between the two.

Honestly, though, I doubt you get much better results from just another adapter with an internal antenna. I would suggest something like this:
Linksys RE6500 AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender
(cheaper from ebay and Amazon)

If your workshop has a window, set it in the window to get a better "view" to the main router. My main router with WiFi is in the basement of my house. On the second floor I have the RE6500 unit in my daughter's bedroom. It not only repeats the WiFi signal from the basement, but also gives me gigabit wired ethernet ports that her TV and XBOX plug into. I get perfect signal and speed from it despite that the router it repeats from is two floors down and my 55" flat screen TV is exactly right between them on the first floor.

I have both the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz channels set with the same SSID and password on both the main router and repeater. All my WiFi devices just connect to the same WiFi network and roaming throughout the house they just pick up the strongest signal and attach to it. I have fantastic full speed connection all the way from my hot tub in the back yard to the farthest room on the second floor.

Answer:Idea Pad Yoga 11S NO POWER

Hi Santiago. Can you specify the Idea Pad Yoga 11S full model number? If you have no power at all, no BIOS error,  no fan sound, no light... nada... when you try to turn on the machine that is not a good sign.  Maybe I will try if that model it has a "reset hole" on the bottom, but I'm not sure. Check the Lenovo Warranty Lookup and see if your machine is still under Warranty. I think that you will need to bring your computer to the Lenovo service center of you country. If it is not under warranty they will charge your for the parts and service. Regards

Hi all,Really in need of help, I have a U310 ( non touch version) that doesn't turn on.How it happened: I dropped it lightly and when I picked up the top right corner sort of seemed detached. I pressed it back and it worked fine that day. But the next day I tried to turn on and the battery LED blinked three times slowly in amber and the laptop wouldn't turn on.What I tried: checked the power adapter, and it reads 20V fine. Checked with aanother adapter at Fry's just to make sure with the same result.2. I opened and checked power connector, and 20V goes out of it too

Answer:U310 no power. Power adapter and connector seem to work fine.

My brother set his max cpu rate to 30% in power options. He says it saves power on his notebook and the batteries last longer. I told him thats a bad idea. But he dont listen to me.

I would never do that to my computers.

why?
There are various power plans in win 7 that can save batteries or increase performance. How does he "limit" his cpu to 30%

Hey guys, I am thinking about upgrading my Power Supply to something with a little more grunt due to only having a Corsair GS800 (which does fine for now) powering 2 GTX480's. I have used a watt meter from the wall an I know if a PSU is pulling say for eg 600w from the wall, then your psu is outputting around 450w-500w.

I would like something with headroom, so I was wondering if you guys know of a good quality power supply for around ?150 - ?200 max, got to be modular and 1000w minimum

Thanks people

PS: when using Furmark and OCCT an the same time, I pulled 675w from the wall (i know Furmark is unrealistic when compared to games ect but I just want too upgrade for future use)

I've set the bios to power on after a power loss. This does not work, I can interrupt power, but when it is restored, the Q150 does not power on. All other machines that I've set this way simply power up when power is restored. Any ideas how to make this work on this machine? Thanks, Pete

Hello,My computer was still working fine a week ago. Disconnected all power for abt for a business trip and when I came back just couldn't start it up again. There is no booting, no beeping and screen is blank at all times so I couldn't tell what's wrong. The keyboard lights don't even come on! The unit does power itself up though, that meas fan is running, USB mouse has lights. But like I said, no beeping no booting and no keyboard, seems like the boot sequence doesn't start at all. I tested both the RAM and HDD on another computer and they work fine, any suggestions how to diagnose this problem?I never had a Motherboard give up on me, can this possibly be the motherboard failing completely?

Answer:Power up computer no boot, no beep, no idea?

What about the fans? If the power supply fan doesn't start, check the breaker in the panel box. There could be a switch on the power supply that you hit by accident too.How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

hey guys, i have very recently started turning off the power at the mains switch during the night to reduce power consumption. the monitor, modem (which has an orange light on constantly), ext. HDD and the PC case are all connected to the mains.

is this a good idea? i heard it can reduce the possibility of an electrical surge that would badly affect the equipment? and of course it would reduce power consumption.

thanks

I'm having problems with Windows Live Messenger. Half the time it won't send Offline Messages and sometimes now even online ones bounce.

My system is spyware and virus free, I have the latest version installed and I've tried all the obvious fixes?uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting etc. Nothing seems to solve it and various tech forums I have posted in haven't been any help at all.

I don't want to go back to the old style of MSN Messenger, if you do that the sounds don't work in it. It's a known problem and there is a fix but it's a hassle and if it doesn't work I may have messed up my system (nice one MSN!!!).

So it's down to this?.MSN tech support have said they can look into my account and see if anything is wrong. But that means taking my account offline, changing my password and then sending me a new one to a different e mail address. Lots of potential for making a complete mess out of it there and for me to lose my main e mail address, my contacts?the lot and permanently.

Has anyone ever done this with MSN? Did it work? In short, is it a good idea? Offline messaging I could live without but I just want the basics to work. I am not really confident of MSN's ability not to lock me out of my account permanently though. What if their e mail to my back up address saying "Here is your new password" goes astray?

Any advice guys?

Ok as some may know my card is overheating... Ive got a heatsink lieing around with a copper plate on the bottom and some Arctic 5 paste. The Radeon Ive got here has a copper shim on the top and I could easily place this heatsink + a fan on top of that and plug it into CPU2 fan on the mobo this fan is about 2 inches up and 6 inches in front of an exhaust fan, so should i place it as exhaust or intake? Or is this just a stupid idea on the whole?

I have determined to learn something about spam and spammers. My ISP catches quite a bit of it and Norton Catches a lot, but some still finds its way to the inbox. I have been moving quite a bit of it into a separate folder, without opening it. I intend to examine the headers, using file/properties, and record the originating ISP. In some cases I will also look at the content, using properties.

My incoming e-mail is scanned by Norton for viruses, but nothing is 100 per cent foolproof.

Am I being stupid and should I just delete all the spam, or am I being reasonably prudent?

If so, have a look on the following post, this should show if your device has been tested with the update yet:

From what I can see, your unit does not seems to have made the list, which leads me to believe that this will be the cause of the issue, I would recommend that you revert back to the previous version of Windows, and observe if the fault still occurs or not.

Nothing in manual under troubleshooting. Any quick fix suggestions have likely been tried, but open to all ideas. If all else fails, and assuming the digitizer is bad, what does repair entail and any rough estimate? Is there any recall? I see this issue on the forum a lot with not many folks getting it resolved.TIA!!

Answer:U310 IdeaPad Touch :The Touch Screen Stopped Working. No Previous Posts Have Helped.

hi c2nah777,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried booting the system in Recovery Mode (One Key Recovery), You're not going to Recover the system since your only going to check the touchscreen in that mode "Outside Windows"

See if the touhcscreen works there,
If Yes, I would suggest doing a factory Reset First Before jumping into a hardware Repair.
If No, Then I think you're correct with the digitizer.

Hi. I have had my Y700 for about 3 months and though it runs perfect, the power adapter gets so hot that it actually leaves my hand red when I pick it up! I never have the powersuply covered or anything like that. Every time I play any game it gets this hot. Is this normal? Something tells me it is not but I thought I would throw it out there. Also, if the power suply is a problem, are there 3rd party power adapters that would be better? thanks

Answer:Y700 Touch Power Adapter Overheating

Hi Redemption77

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would that be the same if you plug it with or without any power strip or different source outlet?
Warm feel should be normal but if its unusually warm then it could be alarming as it goes too hot to handle.

If so , this may likewise cause damage to the laptop and be best that you call in technical support for recommendation and service . You may likewise test a different adapter with the same electrical specification of your current one to isolate .

Hello, good evening, I have had an off-and-on issue with my trackpad not working. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. One moment it will work, the next, it doesn't. I have been bearing with it for months now (plugging in a usb mouse when it won't work for an extended period of time). Today, I stopped working during a timed test (I am a college student), and took 5 minutes to get it to work again. Valuable, precious time that could have meant the difference between an A and the D I ended up with (just kidding that low grade had to do with a refusal to study, but it could have been the cursor refusing to move!). Key points:I know this is not an issue with the function (fn) buttons. Tried that.I don't think it's drivers, because it works sometimes. The pad has been crooked since I got it (eg.: the left side is almost higher than the area around it, while the right side is sunken 2mm below the same area. The back appears to be even on both sides.) Any ideas?

Answer:Ideapad U310 touch touch pad not working

hi meagaletr,

Welcome to the Forums.

Your issue might be similar to this thread.

When the touchpad doesn't work, can you check if the touchpad system icon detects that you're still putting pressure on the pad as shown below:

If you get the same scenario then it's possible that the touchpad is malfunctioning (possibly grounded) and you may need to contact lenovo for service.

We have generation 1 Thinkpad Carbon Touch X1 PCs running Windows 10 x64 Pro.  We get pretty good perfomance from either the (a) internal wireless or (b) external Plugable 3.0 (only works well with 2.0) ethernet adapter. To keep these PCs running well past their warranties, we would like to minimize power/heat.  Are there any specs to guide us as to whether (a) or (b) uses less power and generates less heat?

Some similar threads explore this, but this issue seems to transcend all the threads I found. Essentially, - IdeaPad U460, 0877. - Windows 7, 64. - Replacement AC adapter (multimeter tested good). - Old battery (when plugged in to AC adapter it says 99% available, "Consider replacing your battery," and the charging icon is present suggesting it is charging. Then, the laptop dies / hard shuts down immediately when AC adapter is removed. Will not start on battery. Will not sustain for a moment on this battery. I bought a new battery. - New battery (official Lenovo badged battery). Brand new battery. U460 powers on with the battery just fine. Runs just fine. On this new battery, the laptop doesn't recognize the AC adapter as plugged in. No icon, no charging. Cannot run battery meter reset because it tells me I must plug in the AC adapter, even though it is already connected. With this battery, the battery icon in the front is blinking almost pink/red very quickly and consistently. Same blinking occurs when lid is closed, powered off, and I am attempting to charge it. It was doing a slow orange blinking before the battery drained a few more percentage points. Pulling the battery out with the AC connected shuts the laptop down with this battery, but not the old battery. However, I can transition to the new battery live, turned on, if the AC adapter is first plugged in and then the battery is slid in. It's driving me mad. I did the power butt... Read more

I have a U310 Touch. It's running Windows 10. It had been working fine up until today. I got home, turned it on, and opened the Chrome browser. It suddenly shut down. Now when I try to turn it on, a yellow light on the front flashes three times. But it won't start. I can't hear the fan or head disk moving. It's completely silent. The same happens if it's plugged in or unplugged.  Any ideas how how I can get this thing running?

Answer:U310 Touch Won't Do Anything

Hi Norrime,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

We are really sorry to hear about the issue you are facing.
Maybe two things you can try depending on the OS.

Remove the hard drive and see if it boots to the bios.
Reset RAM
Unplug battery from motherboard
Wait for battery to completely drain
Boot with HDMI monitor to see if anything displays (nothing would, so LCD panel should be good)

Let us know if it helps.

Question: I have an idea

Now I am new to this venue, and I may not be placing this question into the proper forum, however, I shall bash on regardless with this notion and the cool people that you is, feel free to direct me as you see fit.

Are you familiar with such sites as Absolute Poker? You can play various card games for real $$ or play$$. There are thousands of free money games going on at any one time. You just hit the bank and get an allotment of chips and have fun.

I have the coolest takeoff on this thing. However, where do I start to commence to begin? It needs the format to incorporate outside players, (like Absolute Poker), and of course you have to have the software that they use to make the games run. My idea is free to play, and it will really be a hoot for poker fans. But animation, etc., ...where do I start??

First I would think you need to secure the poker program. Then a good programmer could incorporate the changes to make it a more unique game?

I think I'm posting in the wrong place. Basically, this is a real good idea to have some fun and make some money at the same time, but the coordination of the elements to bring this together are quite extensive; hence, I humbly ask for your help. You see, I have a vision...Wasn't it Edison who said that he didn't have to know how to do it all himself, when he could find people who could do it for him? Of course, he probably paid well...

Answer:I have an idea

I see that this is your fist post on the forum. Please format you posts so that they're more readable (paragraphs are your friend).

I ran it on a computer, and turned the computer off. Usually, this works. But on this computer, when it was turned back on, the computer kept on opening its cd-rom! Right now, the cdrom is stuck open. I have tried unistalled the driver for the cdrom and I have restarted the computer in every imaginable way. Still, none of this works!
Please Help!!!
Here is the code I used (got off internet):
Set oWMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.OCX.7")
Set colCDROMs = oWMP.cdromCollection
do
if colCDROMs.Count >= 1 then
For i = 0 to colCDROMs.Count - 1
colCDROMs.Item(i).Eject
Next
For i = 0 to colCDROMs.Count - 1
colCDROMs.Item(i).Eject
Next
End If
wscript.sleep 5000
loop

Okay, so the problems started about two days ago. First and formost, I don't know if it's a software issue, so I apologize if I stuck this thing in the wrong spot. I've read about a hundred pages on this site trying to fix these issues by myself and nothing is working. =/

My computer wont start in normal mode. I can start it in safemode now, even with Network connections. I have managed to access the internet once, and I downloaded hijack, AVG, and Dr. Hardware before I lost the ability to connect again.

I have a reformat disk, and have managed to extract / backup my data after hours of tedious work. However, the disk wont boot, I can't access my BIOS settings from start-up (just goes black screen) If I manage to restart and load correctly after workin in safe mode all other boot options (Debugging, VGA mode, ect) show up, but when I select I just get a black screen.

Ran adaware, and VGA, a few things came up but nothing that seemed to me to be particularly devestating (although I have been humbled as to how much I actually know about these darn machines over the past two days) I have cleaned my cache files (via cleancache 3.0) I think my drivers are out of wack, but I can't update them easily without the internet.

ACK. any help would be so fantastic, I take all of my classes online and not having a computer during finals is a pretty bad situation.

I am accessing the forums via my work laptop, without admin privledges. So keep in mi... Read more

Answer:Please Help - No Idea What To Do

I am assuming that you have either XP or Vista.
I am also assuming that by "reformat disk" you mean an operating system install disk (XP or Vista)
If your computer is set to boot first from the CD, boot your computer from the disk and allow it to reinstall Windows.
Then follow the steps on this link:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

If your computer is not set up to boot from the CD, you will have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS

Well basicly our home computer (a Gateway 831GM with Windows XP home edition if it helps) was pretty messed up so I went ahead and completely reinstalled windows to see if that would help.

It worked like a dream for about a week then it started doing something weird. It will turn on and show the Windows XP loading screen then it will just go black for about 10 minutes before it reboots itself and goes through it again.

Safe mode does work (how else would I be typing this) and I have no idea what could be wrong. The ONLY thing I have done so far after windows xp was reinstalled was install the sound driver, and microsoft office 2003.

Can someone help me out?

Question: just an idea?

i couldnt find where to put this, I saw last year online that your able to have your laptop closed while streaming it onto another computer screen, i currently have to have my laptop open at all times (the screen doesnt work) and stream it onto my monitor i was wondering if anyone knew how or if its possible to close the laptop screen and still keep the laptop on without it going to sleep

Answer:just an idea?

The best place to post this question would have been under the Windows section tht matches the version of Windows you have on your laptop. Since this isn't a Security question and you didn't mention what version of Windows you have, very important to get the correct advice, I'll move it to Hardware for now.

But the solution is easy. Go to the Control Panel, select View by Large Icons to get all your Control Panel icons showing if it doesn't already show the Power Options icon, then go to Power Options, and then click on "Choose what Closing the Lid Does" and choose Do Nothing.

I had stupid PerfectNav and searched on the net and found a post in this forum advising to download and run Spybot, CWS and Adaware. I've done all that....

The thing is that the internet is still going to an error page saying the page could not be displayed. When the home page first comes up, the banners appear, then it seems to hang. When I try to refresh, it goes straight to the error page. Even things like Google and Hotmail just will not come up.

It's been going to search.msn (in the address bar) when the error page comes up, but it just looks like the normal error page.

I'd REALLY appreciate it if someone can help me out with what to do next.

Thanks in advance!

Question: SP3 Idea

hey all, this is just a sorta idea that i was thinking about since i heard about Service Pack 3 for XP.

with the evergrowing worry/annoyance of spyware on Windows computer, and with people complaining more and more of 'casino' and 'free giveaways' icons on their desktops etc. i thought that it would be a pretty good idea to add, in the current Service Pack 2 security center, a Spyware tab along with the current Firewall, Antivirus and Automatic Update tabs. i no this wouldnt be essential for most users on this forum, knowing the threat/annoyance of spyware, but for people who dnt know much about computers, let alone spyware, it would be a good idea to save people money from sending their comps to be repaired, and to become aware of spyware in general. the menu could follow with like

Microsoft Anti-Spyware reports that it is up to date. Anti-Spyware software helps protect etc etc and there could be multiple listings of spyware programs, or something like 'one or more anti-spyware programs report etc'

just an idea i though of
thanks

Sounds like another area in which Microsoft could be sued for trying to make life easier for people. It would be Sun Microsystems all over again.

Question: No idea what to do

Hi, I really need some help or information about what the heck has happened to my computer. I have a 64 bit windows 7 Dell Zino HD Inspiron. It's about four years old and has worked fine for most of that time, but about a month ago it decided to switch off without any prompt, which I thought was weird. When I went to power it back on, I realised that it had its amber light on which normally symbolises that its in Sleep or Hibernate mode. The problem is that none of the peripherals were responding to me or the system. The mouse and keyboard were not causing it to wake and when I eventually cut its power and tried again it seemed to be working, but during the boot up where it shows Dell Inspiron and the rest of the model type, the screen just cut to black and then it did it's weird Sleep mode action.

I have no idea why this is happening, I hadn't added any hardware or software to the computer for a while before it started to play about, and I noticed it made a slight ticking noise before switching "off". I eventually managed to get it on by removing all the peripherals, mouse, keyboard, HDMI cable and a power cable, turning off the power at the mains and removing the power plug, waited a few minutes and then connected it all up again, or so I think this helped make it work for the 15 minutes that it did and then it switched "off" again.

Really lost here guys hopefully I have provided enough information of what happened to get someone to know... Read more

Okay, I have a weird problem with my pc. Last week we had a virus. I used Ad Aware and my virus scanner to get rid of it then everything worked fine. Now though, my pc is soooooo sllllooowwww. I ran Ad Aware and my virus scanner again, nothing.

Everything works fine in Safe Mode with Networking to include my yahoo messenger. BTW, I'm magnoliasoutherly if anyone wants to ping me, in order to help. Just cite this forum though because I don't typically add new people.

Now the weird thing is that it's slow for about the first 30 min. after I reboot. Then all of a sudden, IE closes (even if I'm using it) and afterward, all runs fine just as normal as a sunny day. Weird.

Something that might be important is that while I have Win XP Pro, this is an itty bitty computer. There really isn't enough space to download any further nifty programs. It was a free computer given to me, so I'm not going to complain. Just please help me without suggesting to download anything else. I don't think I can.

Much thanks to anyone who can help me and in advance, I bow down to you in awe.

I?m afraid we will have to download some small programmes to help clean you up. Most are pretty small, but you can always delete them later. Can you advise how much disk space you have available? The other issue here will be that your version of XP is not fully patched. You will need to upgrade to SP1a ? but not until I advise you to do so. And you will need disk space for that.

Let?s start with Wareout.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout or use this alternate location.

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. A... Read more

Hey everyone, first off sorry if this is the wrong forum, it's just my best estimate as to what would be the most relevant forum to post in.

In about mid September I built my first computer. I got one solid state drive (OCZ vertex plus) and a western digital ATA drive (WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0).

Since then, I keep having to reformat and reinstall Windows 7 since seemingly random dll files keep vanishing off my hard drive. This has carried on through several clean formats/Windows installs. For instance this time around Windows picture viewer stopped working, and produces a message saying it can't find the corresponding dll. Or my taskbar locked itself, and is now unlockable. Occasionally these issues will revert back to normal.

The worst of this is a windows service which enables me to use the software i need for work (FLEXnet licensing service) cannot start, as in the system cannot find it. Last time a similar thing happened with direct x (some dll that enables it to work vanished). As I said these issues persist from clean windows install to the other.

I thought it was a virus that jumped on an external drive and then back to a fresh windows install, but I doubt viruses do the kind of stuff that is going on here (I've also run multiple virus/malware scans which came up with nothing, and I didn't detect any unauthorized services or processes running in the background).
I eliminated the possibility of corrupt RAM by running memtest. It found 0 memory errors.... Read more

Think it would be a bad idea to use a can of compressed air on my Macbook screen to remove dust? I don't want to wipe it away as that normally causes scratches on sensitive items that still have dust.

My idea is to use a can of compressed air to get rid of the screen dust, than wipe the screen with some cleaner on a soft eyeglasses cloth. I'm just afraid the can of compressed air could damage the screen in anyway. Of course I'd never hold it in the same spot for too long, or tilt the can.

Thanks

Answer:Think It Would Be A Bad Idea To...

For cleaning the edges of the screen, I don't see a problem so long as you don't tilt the can.

A Q-tip can also be handy in removing built-up dust from screen edges.

As for the main part of the screen, I doubt air duster will be any more effective than either a soft cloth or static-type dusting rag such as Swiffer.

Any help would be very much appriciated.
(PS. If you guys could suggest a place to get drivers for this specific model of sound card that would be great too)
Thanks,

Answer:Different idea

Hi

Shouldnt be your motherboard you need to plug into one of the top ports as the audio via the motherboard is carried via the PCI slot, but the audio from the CD/DVD drive with an audio cable should be the green one iirc.

You drivers should be HERE

But if you have onboard audio disable it in the BIOS, and also unsintall any other audio driver thats installed first.

Question: Any idea?

Hi , after a hard rest n re installing software via WDRT the biggest problem I have now is battery. Other than the fact that it is decreasing rapidly, I also have battery percentage issues. First of them is the long 100% -- when my phone is charged at 100%, I don't unplug it immediately or it will drain fast. So if I wait for 30 mins, that usually helps a little. After unplugging, it stays at 100% for like 35-40 minutes, moderate to heavy use. That's longer than other percentage, because once it goes down to 99%, it will fall down easily to 98%...97%...96%. Like that. Usually it takes around 40 minutes to have 10% of the battery bar down, moderate use.
Next, when restarting our soft resetting, my battery oddly jumps down. For example I have 60% and I restarted, it goes down to 52% which totally wastes like the 8% of it.

Hi, umm i don't actually know where to put this thread so i figured this might be the most appropriate.
(Please move this thread if it is in the wrong forum)

Okay..

Well I'm not too sure what I've done but my computer has recently started restarting itself at random times.

Sometimes I get past the start-up, other times not.

Recently i have had errors saying;
Problems with clock chipset,
IDE Drivers not found
Computer has been restarted due to error (Dumping of Physical Memory)

I'm not sure what any of this means :\

Also i have had in a computer technician, yet he has no seemed to fix this problem.

He told me that this may be because I downloaded a Vista Theme pack (Vista Transformation Pack 6.0)

I had previously tried to uninstall this program which led to the computer restarting more often and then asking to "Boot from CD", this made me install it again >.<

Any help will be much appreciated

Thank you;

These errors could be due to a corrupt or faulty or missing chipset driver. They could also be due to a malfunctioning or dying CMOS battery. They could also be due to a bad BIOS. I don't think the Vista Transformation Pack can cause an IDE problem, but who knows. Try reloading your chipset drivers first. If that doesn't help, install a new CMOS battery. They're only about $2 or $3, but you will have to setup your BIOS again: time, date, boot order, etc. If that doesn't work, run a memory diagnostic using in-depth extended tests over a length of time. If none of those things help, visit your motherboard or PC maker's web site and look for a possible BIOS update....

Question: No idea

I came downstairs to my trusty comp one day only to find a blank screen and the message unable to locate operating system. I called up the emachine tech people and they had me go to the Bios. Under Master/primary it said none. So the guy had me open it up and see if my cable were properly attached to the hard drive, they were. So he says I need to buy a new hard drive.

So i went on ebay and bought one which I dont have yet but my question is this..I am not sure if I install a new hard drive if my emachine disks will put my os on it or do I have to buy a whole new windows dealie. As I am sure you know that is very expensive and my Budget just cant cough up that kind of funds? Am I outta luck? Any way thanks for not laughin!

Over the past week I have been trying to get rid of this virus that I obtained somehow.
I guess you would call this section, Symptoms?
I have been having extremely slow boots and they are getting to the point that sometimes my computer boots and it just comes to a black screen that has lasted for a day (The longest I have let it sit). I just got this computer a month ago, Literally JUNE 2nd, and my computer takes about 5 minutes to boot. My computer goes through boot, then after it gets to the loading Microsoft Windows, it just comes to a black screen for about a minute with only my cursor. My taskbar then pops up on my screen, with just my cursor for another minute or two, then my desktop icons pop up, and my computer takes about 3 minutes for it to load the Microsoft essential processes. (I disabled everything except Microsoft services on start up and I can only use my computer with any effectiveness because I am in safe mode with networking) I think the virus has infected/effected the Microsoft Installer because whenever I try to install redist packages of XNA/.NET framework, it sends me an error that there is an installation already in progress, leading me to believe that the virus is utilizing the Microsoft Installer. I can not install some antivirus programs, leaving me just running the programs, having no applications come up, with processes that cannot be ended. My computer gets stuck at the "Shutting Down" stage of the shutdown process, making me turn off... Read more
