S10 Battery Replaced at 7 months, Now Bad AGAIN only months later.

Question: S10 Battery Replaced at 7 months, Now Bad AGAIN only months later.

The battery in my first gen S10 died after about 7 months. Fortunately, I was still well within my warranty so Lenovo held up their end and replaced it. However, after about 8 months that second battery too no longer holds a charge and my original warranty has since expired. Phone support reiterated as much and denied any help. This leads me to ask, shouldn't the second battery carry with it a full one year warranty? How can Lenovo not stand by a battery that dies in less than a year? This seems like more than just bad luck and has me questioning whether I will purchase another Lenovo product in the future. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased said unit Sept. last year and within a few months the battery started discharging for no reason I could see. Battery returned to Lenovo, tested and a new battery sent out (old one apparently kaput). I thought the problem was solved until a few days ago when... Battery starts discharging again for no reason I can see. Laptop eventually went into hibernation. Unplugged charger, plugged back in, switched on then powered up the laptop and the battery started charging. This sequence of events was repeated 3 times in 1 week, until yesterday when powering up the laptop failed. Took the battery out and tried laptop on charger only. Nothing. Put battery back in and tried to power up - then noticed battery indicator gave 3 orange flashes 1 second apart before stopping. Did the battery discharge thing (pressing in the power button etc.). Still nothing. The unit seems to have failed completely. Can someone tell my what I might be dealing with here - a failed motherboard? Yet again I'm going to have to send this laptop back for repair, and it's been nothing short of a nightmare because I rely on it to do work. I've never experienced something like this before with a purchased laptop and I suspect the original battery problem was caused by a fault inside the laptop. As the machine is still within warranty can I request a new machine or a full refund because I simply don't want to use something which may be inherently unstable? Looking at the views ... Hi, Recently purchased Lenovo thinkpad E430 business series laptop approx 2 months ago.  After one month battery was replaced as it stopped working only after 27 battery cycles. Next in turn was FAN error .. so even fan was replaced. Next is system is getting hanged.. have formatted system 3 time.. however it still hangs with very basic softwares.. Have never faced this issue with any machine. slows down even when i try to do mouse right click to refresh screen. If possible pls replace this faulty machine. Vendor was pretty rude when asked them to help as if they know about performance of this product in advance. Please provide a fix as soon as possible as now its getting really frustratiing .. each week there is a new unknown issue. Feel like have wasted my hard earned money on a so called business series laptop.

I update and save quite a few files each day, and I can see in File History that there are many saved versions for these files.
This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months.  But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup?
What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months?  Are these retained in File History or deleted?
The forums on File History do no make this very clear.

This probably has been asked before but I've read so many different possibilities, I want to ask directly because I still don't know what to expect. Back in January, a family member introduced a virus to our Windows 7 Asus laptop. Long story short, I couldn't remove it and needed to reinstall the OS. Rather than reinstall Windows 7, I installed the Windows 10 tech preview and have been running slow ring builds ever since without much trouble. I'm currently updated to the latest build and would like to come off of tech preview once Windows 10 is officially released tomorrow. My question is whether I can do this without having to reinstall Windows 7 and then upgrade to the mainstream release of Win 10. I believe that the Win 7 recovery partition would have been left intact (although I haven't verified it), however, I would rather not go though all the hassle of two OS installs. Is it possible for me to input my Windows 7 license code to activate the current copy of Windows 10 that I'm using? I personally wouldn't mind staying on the insider rings but this laptop is used by the whole family and so I don't want to continue running beta-level software and to be forced to install new builds every few weeks.
Thanks!

I have a X200 tablet where the right front USB port has failed 3 times in half a year.  Each time, it is the exact same USB port with the exact same problem.  Each time, I have to ship my laptop off for a week for Lenovo to swap out the USB card, only to have it fail again within months.  I only have a 1 year warranty on the machine and have asked Lenovo to extend my warranty at no cost, seeing as how I have a recurring problem that they cannot seem to solve, but they refuse and say that I must purchase an extended warranty. What is a loyal Thinkpad user to do?

I noticed my hinges were getting loose and also the display kind of wobled in the pretty standard position - approx.angle 125deg.   I contacted local Lenovo service partner and he suggested replacing the hinges which turned out to be a good idea as one of the old hinges turned out to be faulty. I had a possibility to hold both of the replaced hinges and test them and there was a huge difference between the left one and the right one. The left one moved freely in the range + - 5 degrees in any position. Pretty weird as I had previously heard so much  praise regarding the Lenovo yoga hinges. The issue has been resolved for me but it may happen to other users so I think it is good to know such an issue may arise in time to come. If so, hopefully within the product warranty. Take care David

I had bought this desktop in Feb.2016 from Costco. It crashed in Oct.2016. I sent it for repairs as advised by HP. Motherboard was changed. It has completely crashed again Jan. 2017, just 2 months after repairs. I have lost all my work. The customer service supervisor promised to escalate the matter and promised a call back from HP. Nothing happened. On calling up was told by another supervisor that he did not see any escalation and I will have to send my computer again for repairs.PLEASE NEVER BUY A HP PRODUCT. THIS IS THEIR QUALITY. IT CRASHES EVERY TWO MONTHS AND LOSES ALL YOUR WORK. MOST UNRELIABLE PRODUCT.

Answer:Motherboard replaced in first 8 months and computer crashed ...

  >  I have lost all my work. What was the cause of the second crash? Was it another failure of the (replaced) motherboard? Does the computer start-up at all?If so, at power-on can you enter HP Diagnostics, to test all the hardware?  What fails? Was it the disk-drive that just "quit"?Does the computer start-up, and then report something like "inaccessible boot device"?Does it start to boot in Windows, and then crash? In most cases, the good news is that all your files are INTACT on the disk-drive.The disk-drive can be removed, and temporarily connected to another computer, and then you can "rescue" your work. You should do this remove-and-rescue BEFORE you send the computer out to be repaired.

I am about to change the MB battery for the third time. I'm pretty sure its drained again as if I switch off the mains power to the unit overnight, the system reports checksum error on start up and loads bios defaults. System calendar reverts back to 31 Dec 2005, with duff clock time

If I leave the PC turned off but connected to power socket, everything is fine for the next start up

I have a foxconn 975 MB. Any ideas what could be causing the batteries to drain so soon - should last several years

Answer:On 3rd MB Battery in 6 months

Probably a fault in the MB, there's not much you can screw up that will do that. I'd be shopping for a new MB.

Hi all About 13 months ago I got a X220. Most of the time I used it in the office with the battery not installed. According to the integrated counter it only has 17 charge cycles (which seems a bit to low in my opinion). Now shortly after the warranty for the battery is over the system keeps warning me, that I use a "not genuine Lenovo-made or authorized battery". While those messages are annoying the real problem is that the system fails to correctly identify the battery level. Sometimes it is not charging the battery thinking it is already full or shuts down the computer believing the battery is empty, although it has been charged for a full day and used only 5 min. After restart the system indicates a full battery again and can be used for 5 hours or so... The battery I use is the one I got with my computer (directly from a reputable online store). Is that a hardware problem with the battery or a software problem? I have made any changes to my setup recently. Are Lenovo-batteries programmed to fail after warranty is over?

Answer:Battery not genuine anymore after 13 months

Hi Hagi, thanks for posting. It really hard to determine the cause at this point. But howere To narrow down the issue further lets start by updating the BIOS and Power Manager and from there we'll work our to see the cause. Hello all.  I want to sell back my old IBM R52 so I powered it up today after sitting for about 18 months.  The battery indicator light flashes orange, and it will not charge (only runs when plugged in).  The laptop ran fine the last time I used it, so what do you think happened and what could I do to fix it on the cheap?  Thanks.

Answer:Laptop sat for 18 months, now battery won't charge

Welcome to the Forum! Unfortunately, if it's flashing orange rapidly, then your battery is dead. You will need to replace it. Once you're sure your battery was charging up the last time your turned on the laptop, then the charging circuitry itself should be fine. Certain precautions have to be taken when storing lithium-ion batteries for a prolonged period. Even so, they are vulnerable, especially if your battery was already several years old. You may find some battery care tips here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=PFAN-3QNQJN and http://batterycare.net/en/guide.html

Got a 6 cell battery in an IBM branded T60 purchased approx Nov 2007 for an xmas present to me in Dec 2007 (she works for IBM and presumably got a staff discount). Battery data says Sony and manufactured in June 2007. Not subject to any recall - I checked. About a month ago noticed battery probs. In past always got 2.5 - 3 hours out of it with modest use/drain.  Now it says 3 hours remaining and 30 mins later is at 4% and hibernating.  When charging it says it has 2 or 3 hrs to fully charge but only a short time later it is progressing much faster than this and in fact probably only takes an hour or so to (allegedly) fully charge. Battery info says it is in good condition and when fully charged has some 3 hrs capability.  Only 77 cycles so far - nowhere near what its reasonable life / cycles ought to be. Is the battery mgt software faulty / misreporting and mismanaging a perfectly good battery or is it being tricked (perhaps by just N out of 6 cells somehow going faulty)?   Have fully discharged and recharged a couple of times - no difference (and with Li-Ion I wouldn't expect it I guess) Anyone any clues about cause or even any likely cures (doubtful, I guess) and how likely are IBM/Lenovo to look kindly on this given just our of battery warranty period? CheersGeorge

I purchased my T410 in May of this year.  It has the 6 cell battery (57Y4185).  Already after only 4 months the battery life is essentially useless.  I can barely get 45 mins to 1 hour out of it, even with the Power Manager set on Maxiumum Battery Life and the screen brightness turned way down.  The Power Manager shows the battery condition as "Poor" with a red icon.  It says "Your battery can store 51% of its original full charge capacity". The battery seemed okay (at least 1.5 to 2 useable hours) up until a few weeks ago when performance suddenly plumetted. Are there any known problems or recalls with the batteries on this laptop?  I'm unhappy at the prospect of spending $150+ for a replacement battery on such a new laptop.  I purchased warranty, are the batteries covered? Thanks for any advice before I spent time phoning support.

After just 14 months, battery on my Tecra seems to be dead. I said "just" because of, before Tecra I had Toshiba Satellite, and after 2 years of every day work, battery on Satellite lasted longer than on Tecra!
Seems to be Tecra more oriented to professionals then Satellite?? hmmm

Anyhow, I really tried to keep battery in good shape, that's why, at least once a week, I plugged power cord off, and left Tecra to work on battery, just to allow battery to be, at least once a week fully empty and then recharged.

But, it was obviously just wasting a time, because of, the battery now lasts just 7-8 minutes !!

The question is: what is the time 6/12/xx months? That Toshiba guarantees battery will last as it should be when computer is brand new?

I mean, it's not problem, I will buy new battery, but I am really disappointed with this situation. I didn't expect it from Toshiba!!!

Answer:Tecra A8 -103 - dead battery after just 14 months

Hi

As far as I know EVERY notebook manufacture provides only _one year warranty for battery packs_.
Why? Because it?s nothing unusual that the battery pack would start to lose the own performance after a longer time of usage.

As far as I know after about 500 times of charging/discharging procedures, the battery will start to lose the performance.
This means the battery life time decreases and someday you would need to replace it.

My notebook doesn?t run on battery anymore. The battery power lasts for about 2min even it?s fully charged. I know I should replace it but I use this notebook as ?desktop Pc?. It?s always connected to the mains.

Hello, In august I bought new Lenovo B50-80 notebook. One month ago, I was checking HWmonitor and I saw that the battery wear level is 11%. PowerShell battery test in Windows 10 says the same ? at one of a charge battery wear. Which I think 11% is to much. I use my notebook as a secondary PC. In two months of usage, I charged max 15 times (and before always depleted to 15%).I tried RMA the battery, but I did not have any success. They say that the battery is OK, if notebook does not automatically shut down.I would like to know if this is normal wear for battery and the answer from RMA guys.If it is not, how can I contact directly Lenovo? Please advise.Best regards.B.

Perhaps Lenovo's new rapid charge technology causes batteries to lose their capacity faster?  My x220 battery still maintains 90% of its charge.

Hi,

I have owned a yoga 13 since January, which I'm quite happy with apart from some well-known problems (fan noise and weak wi-fi).

I have however observed an abnormally high rate of maximum battery capacity loss. This is the battery capacity history report since I first got the machine:

Link to picture

You will notice that today (November 2013) the full charge capacity of the 54 mWh battery is only 41 mWh, which is a 24% loss over 10 months.

This seems a bit excessive to me, and it also renders my Yoga less useful: it now lasts about 4 hours at best, instead of the 5:30 is used to last when it was new.

Is this normal or something that would call for a warranty repair?

If it's normal, does anybody know where I can get a replacement battery in Europe? Local lenovo rep wasn't much help...

Thanks for the help,
Spyros

Hi everyone, I recently noticed that the battery life of my Thinkpad Yoga 12 has drastically decreased since I bought it two months ago. In the beginning I could get 5 hours of battery easily. Now it's down to 2 hours - in normal office mode. The long battery life was one of the reasons why I bought it initially - and now it's failing me. I don't recall having done anything to the battery, hence I am totally clueless as to why the battery life has decreased so severely. Any suggestions and help highly appreciated. Thank you,Kai

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 12: Battery life down down to 2 hrs after just 2 months

Find or install the app Lenovo Settings.

Go to Lenovo Settings > Home > Power > click on "Show details"

You will see there the Full Charge Capacity and the Designed Capacity. Tell me these numbers. If these numbers differ a lot your battery was corrupted due to aging related stress or other problems.

You can also try Lenovo Settings > Home > Power > Battery Gauge Reset to try to reset the way your computer measures full capacity, but if you experience 2 hours only this wont help.

Got my computer for christmas and ordered it directly from lenovo.  Little bit of a hassle cuz I had to ship it to a relative in the mainland U.S. in order to ship it Guam (where I live).  Was happy with my computer and set up windows 8.1 and everything else I needed.  Couple days passed and my computer was plugged in to the power outlet but the power icon stayed at 50%. Scrolled over, and it displayed  "plugged in/not charging."  Unplugged it and checked if the battery was even draining and it was.  I then shut the computer down and tried to charge it.  The only thing that did was get rid of the not charging part of the text.  The computer was at 18% but wouldn't budge one bit upwards but it does still display that it is charging.  So I just decided to drain the battery and now it just stays at 5% mocking me.  Laptop is pretty much brand new.  Need some help on this one. Please.

Go into Lenovo Power Management in the system tray and set it for maximum battery life not optimized battery health (optimized i believe keeps it at 60% charge while on a/c power) maybe yours got stuck on a setting in there, it worked for a friend whos laptop was stuck at 60% and draining.

Hi everyone, In January I bought a Lenovo laptop. The 500S-14ISK Laptop (ideapad) - Machine Type 80Q3. After a few weeks, the battery was not being charged anymore, and while I only used the laptop while on AC, the battery slowly depleted. Thus, it became unusable. The issue was fixed through the shop where I bought the laptop (which is a hassle because I live in another country than where the shop is). But now after I have gotten it back for two weeks, the problem has returned. The battery started to be stuck at 95%. Hovering over the battery icon gives a statement that the battery is not charging. Any ideas on what I could do? As stated, going back to the shop and let them fix it is not an option at this point. Notes:- The battery still depletes slowly between shutting of and starting again. When I shut it down one day and boot it up the next, the battery is still stuck but at one percentage point lower. - The Lenovo Settings program that pops up when I click on the big battery icon in the bottom right corner gives an interesting statement (It's in Dutch so I will translate as well as possible). "The AC (adapter) can't fully support your computer and should be repaced immediately."- I tried updating and reinstalling battery drivers etc but this didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been trying to find a solution to this online for a few days now and haven't come across anything. I have a Toshiba Satellite Fusion. It was working beautifully until the other day when I went to use it. It wouldn't power up so I assumed the battery was dead. Plugged it in and the charging light didn't come on but the computer powered on. The laptop recognizes that it's plugged in and shows that the batter has a 100% charge on it but will not run unless it's plugged and will shut off instantly when unplugged. I've tried using another charging cable with no luck and I'm unsure at this point what next step to take. I would pop the battery out and put it back in but this one doesn't have an easily accessible battery and I'm trying to avoid taking it apart if possible. I haven't located a battery reset button on the bottom either.

As noted in the title it's two months out of warranty otherwise I'd just send it in.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

Answer:Battery wear level 22% in a 6 months old laptop

Good day.

Battery wear can be dependent on a number of factors. If you're concerned with what you're seeing, I would suggest that you contact Service (info below) to discuss. I believe that system batteries have a one year warranty.

Hope this helps.

In mid-November, I woke up one morning to find my computer had shut down rather than staying asleep like I had left it the night before.  When I turned it back on, there was a red x over the battery icon in the taskbar, and it said no battery was detected.  I removed the battery and reinserted it.  The computer discovered the battery this time but the light on the hardware itself began flashing orange.  When I moused over the Power Manager icon again, it said there was a charge to the battery (100%, I believe), but it wasn't charging.  I opened Power Manager, it said that a battery error had occurred and that I was to replace the battery. I then tried to reset the battery through Battery Maintenance in the software.  When it attempted to discharge the battery, the computer shut off.  After starting up, I tried unplugging the AC adapter and the computer shut off.  Even if there was a charge left to the battery, it wasn't powering the computer.  Two months later, now, there's no charge left.  I've had to use it plugged in -- I'm using it now to write this.  I should have looked into this sooner -- it happened in late November -- but I tend to accept problems when they come along and rely on my own (often limited) ability to solve them.  In this case, it was after warranty so I concluded that I had to buy a new battery.  Since I wouldn't need to be mobile again until 2009, it just wasn't a priority. ... Most of the Sanyo Batteries fail instantaneously without prior warning like you are use to in other types of Li-ion battery........  Do you have a X60 Tablet??? This is definitely a problem with the battery.......

Is there a way to resurrect a dead battery that failed way too soon? Seems it's the chip that has the problem. I bought a second battery from Amazon to "back up" my original battery sent in the machine at purchase late October 2011. I have a 427637U that has had an mSATA and SSD 256 added to the chassis. Spinning HD in the optical bay. Usual stuff, right? I knew that there was only a chance that it was really new -- as advertised. All seemed to go well with this new battery but about a month ago it seemed to stop charging at 49% and then it actually would not power the computer a little while ago. I ran the battery recall ID software and it returns a "product not covered" message. I do have Amazon helping me get something back from the seller of the second battery. I ran the Lenovo Power Manager software "battery reset" routine but no help. The Power Manager says there's a battery error and confirms that it will not power the laptop. The stats are not at zero for voltage, etc., though. I might have made this happen because once when the laptop was on AC and I took out the battery to swap to the other unit -- I noticed a real hiccup in the notifications area. I wish I could remeber exactly what I saw. I hope Monday brings word the retailer willl swap it out, but I doubt it. I hope someone here has an idea (I *did* search a bunch of different query strings...) Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Jonathan7007

Answer:w520 battery died after 6.5 months. Not a recalled unit

Bummer.  But it's a battery and you might have got a "second".  First thing I do with each new battery and is to run HWinfo and find the if the full charge capacity and degradation or wear level percentage is acceptable, anything less than 3% for new is a peach.  Anything near 10% is a rebadged retred.

Hi.
I had bought my Lumia 520 back in 2013. It's been wonderful.
I upgraded it to Denim back in January 2015. For the first three weeks, it was working properly. Then, I noticed that my battery was draining faster while doing basic things like using internet for 30 minutes at a stretch. I thought it was calibrating and didn't bother much about it.
Now, after 6 months of usage using this denim update, I found that my battery is not only draining faster but the back of the phone is also heating up. For example, if I WhatsApp for 2 hours continuously, my battery drains to 44% from 100%. Even as I'm typing this question, my battery drained from 99% to 94% and I charged it about 50 minutes ago. It's irritating me and I'm worried. Is my battery gone to hell? Or is it the update?
PS. There were no problems during the update itself.

Answer:Heavy battery drain six months after upgrading to denim?

Are you getting a proper cellular signal strength in your area? Is it like that while using wifi? Try a soft reset and monitor you battery usage to see which application is using the most power.

Hi guys,I have a one-year old Lenovo Z510, I have already flashed the battery firmware 5 months ago.Now the laptop shutoff at 35% of batter with no warning or notice that the battery is almost empty. This problem was occurring before the first firmware flash and that flash solved it. So please is there any other firmware update because I cannot flash the current firmware (same version).

I've had this computer for 2 yrs since I built it. Has a Asus M2N-SLI mobo with athlon 6400 x2. 4gigs ram, Nvidia 9800 gtx, 600W PS. Most of the time runs fine, no signs of problem. Clock's acurate no lost time. Every 2 months or so, in the morning go to boot up and no beep or post. Just runs all fans and everything but never posts.

After first time I figured out when I replaced cmos battery it works fine. But keeps happening every 2 months or so. Any ideas? Battery should last much longer than 2 months. I'm stumped on this one and even my professors at college don't know. One tech support guy said might be a grounding problem with mobo and case. But that sounds weird. Mobo is mounted like case manufacturer says with brass pins holding it up. Please help...

Answer:CMOS battery keeps dying every few months... computer starts but no beep to post

Just got a new cmos battery and it booted up. When I booted up it was resuming windows from hibernation.. Would that cause battery to die? Doesn't sound right to me... Please help. Can't keep buying these batteries.

Site looks great... But, when you put in OT at work and have a new born at home it's hard to visit your favorite forum.... I had a quicky for the group to help solve - a 3 parter.

1st part - create a user form to display xml data - what is the vba code to display an xml node in a user form text box.

2nd part - create a macro that when run captures the hilighted words in the current PPT slide then displays it in the VBA userform textbox.

3rd part - on the same userform create a button and code that when clicked will add the text from the "selected text" field then add it to the XML doc.

thanks in advance for the input,
Red

Question: down for months

This computer got a virus several months ago. It redirects the browser and doesn't allow me to do a lot of things, so I got frustrated back then and stuck it in the closet. I fired it up this morning, deleted a bunch of programs, and decided to give it another try. Here's the DDS Log:

Answer:down for months

I know, being patient is one of the rules, so I apologize in advance. Maybe the title I chose, "down for months" gives the impression that I'm not too interested in resolving this issue - I don't know. I am very interested in getting help with this. I realize this is free voluntary help, and I appreciate that. I noticed that I've had 28 or 29 views, but no one has replied. I'm honestly not trying to seem impatient. Just curious that's all. I have no idea what's wrong with this computer, or how to read that DDS log. My concern is that, since there have been 29 views, I'm assuming those who do know how to read that log have looked at it and decided not to get involved, for whatever reason. If someone who reads the log and doesn't want to help could just leave me a reply saying, "You're screwed - your computer is now an anchor" that would be very much appreciated also.

Thanks again and sorry if I seem impatient. I'm not . . . much

Question: 6 Months Later...

Ok, so here's on my ongoing struggle...

Bought a bunch of new supplies back in february: Asus A8N-SLI Premium Mobo, AMD 3800 x2 CPU, 2 GB Corsair PC3200, Nvidia XFX 6800 XT, 480 W Aurora Power Supply, WD 74G Raptor SATA, and such....

Installing Windows XP, everything goes fine through the formatting, and the non graphical setup. Once it gets to the graphical setup...It's lags on the 39 Min remaining screen...and sits there with no progress for about a minute, before turning off my machine automatically. When i took it to a repair center...they had no issues installing it. Peculiar. This morning, I got a system error, and had to reinstall windows. Same issues I was having earlier with the turn offs. I'm wondering if it could be the power supply or APC unit. It's an old 300W apc, and might not be able to handle the power. I've tried a new vid card, had the mobo RMA'd, New ram, the works....yet nothing.

Any suggestions? (Not paying another $175 to have a repair center install windows :X)

Thanks in Advance.

Dane

Ok I have a small medical transcription company, we were recently forced to move our servers from where they were housed and setup our own, I was scared and leary of this but we went with QWEST, as the local cable company for the area we housed our servers didnt have static ips, QWEST does.

Our setup consists of a DVI server, an FTP server, an email server, and 2 computers used as dns controllers, along with our Sonicwall firewall.

So we set everything up, call up our name registar to point to the new IPs etc, everything was fine about 24 hours later as everything was working well, most everyone was reset back up except for 3 transcriptionists.

Well these 3 people cannot connect period, they cannot ping (times out) we did trace routes, stops at my reserved gateway, and doesnt go through to the IP.

Through troubleshooting we have found one common factor, all 3 that cannot connect/ping etc have Comcast cable for an isp and all 3 have ips starting with a 24, so they all have 24.x.x.x ips etc.

I should also note that I also have Comcast for an isp but my IP starts with a 66 and I can connect fine.

I called Comcast and was originally told it was previous internet abuse issue, yet the tech support at Comcast is of the basic level, I try to explain the issue to them and they want me to reboot the modem and computer, try using ftp program, etc. the issue isnt connectivity to the internet, its to my servers, like I mentioned earlier they cannot ping or trace route or... I have had 107 BSOD's the last two months, and when I sent the computer into the shop to get fixed up, the only diagnoses the geniuses had was that there was nothing wrong with the computer. This Gateway SX2850-33 was bought in mid-December and has been crashing since April 12th.

I have looked at BlueScreenView and done debuggers (dumpchk/WinDbg). Here is the output from the debuggers

Well, one month if you're just looking at the replacement....  original laptop was purchased in February and received in March; had issues with the fan and digitizer so had it replaced end of march. Got replacement April 6th, and two issues above are no longer a concern as the fan is reasonably quiet (barely hear it when in power saver mode, which is what I'm in most of the time), and no issues to date with the touch screen, so overall, I'm pleased.  things I really do like about the laptop: - form factor; I like the flexibility to flip the screen.- back lit keyboard...very useful at night in dark rooms...- USB port doubling as an AC port...not sure why this was never thought of earlier....- 1080p screen...I'm glad they didn't come with a higher resolution as I believe that it's currently a sweet spot for battery performance, and icon scalability within windows apps...- really like the feel of the touch pad....and this is from someone that usually hates touch pads...it works well and mimics touchscreen behaviours well, albeit that one bug that doesn't activate dual touch for context menus without messing with your registry manually...- Battery capacity & battery life; I believe the battery was supposed to be rated at 44Wh, but out of the box, both devices I had were being detected as 46Wh, and were both being charged to over 50Wh....on power saver, I can usually get 7-9hrs of life, depending on what I'm doing, although I got one rep... Answer:Yoga 3 14 - 2 months in...

Just an ammendment to the above; after some more research and playing with the system, it would seem that it isn't thermal throttling, but TDP throttling due to surpassing the wattage limit 15watts that's killing performance...  The sad part of it is that it really isn't needed as the system could handle it fine, and you can see it for the 30-45 seconds that it allows turbo to run past the 15 watt limit, where it reaches 18-20watts easily underload, and temps are staying within reasonable  (usually mid  70's to low 80's)  Now, I understand the reasoning for limiting to 15watts, while running on battery power; totally understandable... But when plugged in, I want all the potential power available to to me when I need/want it, and what makes it worse, is that the system as is teases that it can handle it, before dropping down to a lower power state. Not only that, but the TDP is not just turning off turbo, but dropping the speed of the processor below its advertised speeds to satisfy the 15watt limit.  As I know this is not a set in stone value mandated by Intel, and that each manufacturer can set their own TDP limits, I'd like to see either a) raise the TDP levels to something more reasonable (19-20watts), and let thermal throttling take care of overheating if it happens to be the case (really no sense having two throttling methods when plugged to the wall), or b) unlock the TDP settings to let entheusiasts to set their own TDP limit via... This is a problem with my computer crashing when playin games

ok i had a friend build me a custom made computer....and he loaded windows ME on it. I realized this OS was crap so i upgraded to windows XP at a friends lan. This is where all the trouble began. So i loaded my favorite game (counter-strike) on my new XP operating system and after 2 minutes of playin it would crash wit an error note. I tried and tried playing again but still had errors after 2-5 minutes of playing.

Next i decided to clear out XP and go to 2k pro......still same crashing problem while playin games.

Next i went back to ME thinking all would be better if i went back to when it worked fine. NO still same problem

Then one day i bump computer and it shuts off and from then on my computer shuts off with even the slightest touch. So i take it to the local computer store and the guy tells me the mobo wasnt properly screwed in and connected or something like that and says that this was probably the reason why my computer crashes while playing game.------- well it fixed the nudging and turning off problem but games still crash!

I Reformatted wit various OS's time and time and stil had problem.
So finally i thought well it could be a ram issue. So a friend let me borrow a stick of 256 pc3500 mushkin ram.

YES YES it worked fine for 2 whole days of use........and wit 2 long days of gaming... Read more

Hi,

Been meaning to write a note here for perhaps some tips and suggestions on what to do to get my 8.0 upgraded successfully to 8.1.

Months ago I was very excited to upgrade as I read of all the great improvements and now there is a note on line that 8.1 will get more upgrades in April.

So I got the banner across my desktop asking me if I wanted to upgrade so eventually I gave in and allowed the process to happen. I was very excited until the final reboot and well... I booted into a very grave mess.

I had NO background image, black screen. No task bar, no icons, only "a cursor in the dark" as I like to call it. Yea, I actually had a cursor I could move around and click but I couldn't "see" what I was clicking on. So upon trying what I could I called up Microsoft and after a while they asked permission to take over my machine and after 4 HOURS we both gave in and I had to do a full reinstall. At least the newer Windows saves all the older stuff in a Windows.old folder so not all was lost but enough to know I didn't want to go through that again.

Apparently the video drivers became corrupt along with Windows Explorer (that's what the MS tech was able to figure out). She was just as amazed as I was.

Anyway, I've laid off the upgrade again in hopes I could get here and ask what it was I should do before trying again? My video drivers are all up to date (as they were the day all that happened). The only thing I had running was the scrip... Read more

Have had mixed results with 8.1 here, had to revert to 8 on some laptops, am postponing any more upgrade until some time after 8.1.1 is out and has been discussed\reviewed.

But in all circumstances, IMO move nr1 in any upgrade process is to 1st do some good imaging (easeus here for xp\w7, macrium for w8).

Something not very stressful at all and something that's been done hundreds of times before. Attached are the dumps and, being a novice, I have no idea what they mean. I will need more than a logo to buy another ThinkPad! I don't know where they get this idea of great service. I had to exchange a R61 because of a defective keyboard (I was within the 30 days of purchase, that was in October) and bought a T61 instead. Can you believe that I NEVER got refunded? It has been 3 months. I had a RMA number , they have confirmed receiving the R61. A ok to process the refund. But no refund. Just a promess that it will done in the next 5 business day. I?ve been told that for the last 3 months. NEVER got a call back from the person taking care of my return. Only got replied to my emails (days and weeks after I send them) by the second sales rep. I was calling Lenovo once a week, (didn?t to be annoying, I understand that they are busy). Every sale rep would listen to my story but no one would call back to keep me posted. When I started calling and emailing twice a week... I got a bit more action. I was told again today that it will be done in the next 5 business day. And to call back next Tuesday... I'm just a returning student who tought he was getting the best for his money... As if anyone cared at Lenovo!
Message 2I?m afraid to do anything. I can?t afford to lose that money as I went back to school in accounting. This is not starting my semester very well... then call your credit card company..
and do this right away as there are time limits..

i'm sure lenovo does not want to take your $$ but calling the credit card company WILL get the attention of the proper lenovo personnel..

also, a hint..
next time make your post a little easier to read..

About 6 months ago I was infected w Trojan/Vundo and the BC gang helped me get back on my feet. I ran ComboFix, use Ad-Aware, AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot, Spyware Blaster.

I enjoyed 6 worry-free months and now I'm stuck again. Windows will not complete loading--freezes. I tried to use my windows recovery in safe mode and clicking "next" prompts no further action after I've chosen a previous date. I have done a HJT log in safe mode only.

Symptoms when windows was working still:

Google results were links to other ad sites.
IE would not allow me to go to BC.com and other helpful forums but would allow me to go to youtube, google, yahoo, etc.
Updating Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVG was not allowed.
Malwarebytes would no longer load (would show to load in the Task Manager but nothing further.)

So I feel frustrated because I can't use any malware/virus programs to clean. And I can't load windows in anything but safe mode.

Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Answer:Seems Worse than 6 months ago

Hi and welcome back. I am sending you a private message with instructions. Please follow those first and then run malwarebytes according to these instructions. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. -- MBAM may make changes to your registry a... Read more

As the subject line implies, I've now had 2 HD crashes in 4 months. I'm running a Lenovo PC with SATA drives. Here's the thing...both times it was my secondary drive. The original drive is fine...so far.

The first time this happened, I had 3 drives hooked up. My C drive, a 2nd drive connected to the SATA connection on the MB, and then I had an external drive enclosure (USB). First, the drive in that enclosure stopped. The bios could find no sign of it, even when I connected it directly to the MB. It will spin for a few seconds and then stop.

The second time this happened (today), the drive was my 1T Seagate that is relatively new. I had earlier performed a Photoshop batch script that adjusted about 700 photos on that drive. All went well. And hour later, I got a BSOD. I allowed Windows to perform the startup thing (I forget exactly what it said) and it couldn't because it could not access the drive. Every time I would try to start the PC, it would go BSOD. Until I disconnected that 2nd drive. Then the PC started right up...no problems. Tried connecting the 2nd drive again and it can't see it. The drive spins up but can't be found.

So my question is, could the onboard controller, or something else (power supply?) be causing this or is it simply a coincidence that I've lost 2 drives in 4 months. I don't think I've lost 2 drives in the previous 10 years

Ideas? Thanks in advance....

Question: 3 months of BSOD,

Hello everyone, I have looked around everywhere to try to sort my problems out but I've had no luck. Now I've decided to bite the bullet and ask for help. I had a computer built about 3 months ago. Everything was fine at first, then I started to get BSOD.

First the errors were due to 'a clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor' but now they are going into a more serious 'uncorrectable hardware error'. I'm after potentially pinning down the dodgey component and sending it back, or fixing it - and I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to help. I'll try to provide as much info as I can:

Problem signature:

Hi there,Am I missing something here. Having just purchased the new PC Advisor, June 2008, I was interested to preview the full programme Driver Genius 6.0. Having follwed the instructions, given in the magazine, I CANNOT get the programme installed. Each time I attempt to install it, I am asked for the password to verify it before installation, and that is as far as I get. Anyone else had the same problem, or am I missing something.

Answer:This Months PC Advisor DVD

I never use the programmes on the DVD but could it be you have to obtain the password from the website prior to installation?

I have a simple 8 GB USB storage drive (dane-elec, looks just like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41tMIDsGrAL._AA260_.jpg) and have been using it for a long time now. Today I lent it to my friend so he could give me some little game he wanted to share. He put the file on the drive then gave it back to me, and the trouble started. When I put the drive in my computer it said "USB Drive Not Recognized."
I am unable to work around this no matter what I try. My computer is XP and my friend's is 7. I have tried it on both of these and two other XP computers, same error on all of them. All of these I know work using other USB devices, so it is this driver that's the problem. I have tried everything I can think of. The computer's troubleshooting was where I started. I have tried re-enabling it and have uninstalled the driver, though now it is not letting me reinstall, as it doesn't recognize it as what it is in the first place.
After all of this, it is still messed up. I am guessing whatever file my friend gave me got corrupted somehow, but I have never heard of a corrupted file causing this. I know this wasn't his fault, at least purposely. I have looked all over the net, wasting 2 hours trying to find a solution. I hope someone here has one.

One of my friends is having problems with monitors....

Apparently, the computer in question has went through 3 monitors and on its 4th one now, since May....

Anyone have any idea as to what would cause this?

All of the monitors haven't been brand new, but have not been used much either.

I instantly assumed a power issue... for the following reasons:

1.) He lives in very small area with very low quality power lines anyway

2.) The area we live in is known to have lots of power issues

3.) I took a look at the machine... when it first comes on, the power supply sounds like it buzzes, but then quits by the time it gets into windows..... this doesn't happen everytime, but sometimes.

The power supply is a 250 watt atx power supply.

Hello all. I have recently bought this laptop in February. In the past week it has decided to start crashing on me.... I am not using strenuous software, only youtube, microsoft word and google chrome.  It happens very randomly, the screen will freeze on the current page and then a buzzing noise for 10 seconds will follow. The noise will stop but the screen continues to stay frozen... Only resolved by holding the power button down as both mouse and keyboard are frozen/inactive.  I have searched for solutions.... updating drivers.... reinstalling drivers.... scanning for viruses.... however nothing has come up or resolved this.I am in desperate need of the laptop at the moment due to University deadlines, however the freezing continues to hamper my progress, whilst losing work between saves.  Any solutions would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance! P.S. I do have the HP 1 Year warranty? Aswell as a John Lewis 7 Year warranty.

My sons sister in-law took her laptop back to the store she bought it from for repair. They said the HDD was bad. The first replacement drive they installed didn't work. They tried another and it worked.....for a while. She has brought it to me out of frustration and it looks like the drive is bad!

It is an Acer laptop. The first time I looked at it the BIOS did not have an HDD listed. I tried Alt-F10 at boot and then the BIOS started to see the drive. When Windows tries to start it says the C: drive needs to be checked and it begins CHKDSK. It fails with "An unspecified error occurred (............ dee).

Could this be a motherboard failure rather than the HDD? 3 drives failing in the space of a few months seems suspicious to me.

Thanks

Hey, so my computer has been BSODing for about 2 months now and I can't figure out why. The Blue Screen View always displays ntkrnlpa.exe as one of the crash addresses but even after research, I can't figure out what to do or exactly what is causing it, as I know that's a Windows kernel. I don't really know what changed back when it started or what drivers were installed at that time. I originally thought it was an external harddrive I got around that time but I think I bought that after the problems started and I've now noticed that the computer crashes even when the HD's not plugged in. It crashes even when I leave my computer on over night. Here's the Minidump log from the past 2 months:

so a few months ago my laptop randomly began running slow. Nothing was opening and i couldn't connect online. I restarted it and it stayed the same only my laptop wouldn't shut down. I figured it was some form of malware but nothing was picked up when i scanned it. I decided to reset my laptop to it's factory settings but the problem remained.

I was getting help from malwareremoval.com just to be sure there wasn't anything infected on my laptop, which there wasn't and i was referred to this site for help.
so here are my current symptoms

my laptop wont shut down or restart. It wont even go to he windows is shutting down screen, it stays on the desktop (works in safe mode though)

It would start up really slow until i stopped some programs from starting though startup inspector

and i cant update windows. when it automatically updates it gets stuck during the download. When i go to control panel update its get stuck and nothing happens. If i go to windows update the screen turns white and get stuck. I had a bit of success after i used dial-a-fix and managed to get into microsoft update but it jst stayed at the inspecting system part. I've even downloaded xp sp3 from a different site but still does not install.

so im not sure what else i could do so i hope anyone here can help

please and thanks

Answer:Issue I've had for a few months now

Hi .

System manufacturer and model?

How much RAM installed?

How much free space currently on Windows partition...how large is this partition?

As a start...I suggest running the chkdsk command.

Go to My Computer, right-click on C:, select Properties/Tools tab.

Click the Check Now button under Error Checking, select both options. click Start.

Answer Yes to dialog box which appears.

Reboot the system...the chkdsk command will execute. Upon completion, system will boot into XP.

The label on the DVD case claims that Zoner Photo Studio is a FULL photography suite. This is most definitely not true. Scarcely any of the tools actually function, you just get a message saying that this tool is available in the paid for version. I uninstalled the program as as far as I was concerned it was a waste of time. Even this proved difficult, and it took Crap Cleaner and RegScrub XP to finally get it fully off the computer. DEFINITELY NOT a program that I would recommend anyone installing.

A warranty is supposidly 12 months yet i have only had mine 1 1/2 months and is says i only have 8 months warranty left, somethings wrong there and looking at the dispute page it looks like you cant dispute it until they says its run out????

Answer:warranty 12 months ????

Hi Is it registered with HP? When registration occurs the warranty would be adjusted to start from the born on date (I think you press ESC and then F1 to view this). So if you could try that and then ask again if there is still a difficulty.

Hi,

I have a computer since 2 years. It is an assembled Intel Celeron D345, 3066 MHZ.
My CPU fan starts creating noise almost every 2 months. The first fan lasted around 10 months but over the last year I have been changing a fan every couple of months. Noise starts, then temperature going above 70 C. At one instance the computer was shutting down due to overheating.

The noise completely disappears after I replace the FAN but for two months.

Can you please tell me how can I resolve this problem for good. The FAN type I get is the only one available in the market.

Answer:CPU Fan dying every 2 months

I agree with Zenosincks that the fan you are using must be garbage. Most replacement fans are, unless they are ball bearing

3 solutions.

1. Buy from the CPU Manufacturer one of their heatsink/fan combos. This will usually last from 1-2 years.

2. Buy a 3rd party fan solution such as Thermaltake or Zalman. I use a ZeroTherm Silent UFO cooler which pushes 42.8 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) of air through the case on and yet only runs an average of 19 Db, so it is extremly quiet. I have been using this on my homebrew machine for a couple of months now and it is a joy not to hear the fan.

3. On my homebrew gaming machine, I use a vapor phase exchange cooling system to the CPU and GPU. Although I built this myself, there are such packages on the market. They are also known as compressor cooling systems. You can also look for water cooling systems by Zalman Thermaltake or Koolance. Koolance in particular makes a nice system that mounts on the top of the tower, with all the controls at your fingertips.

I did a recovery on my laptop about 2 months ago, then I was still having issues with the pc and took it to the computer shop and had it fixed sort of.  I go home and I realized about a few weeks later that my Microsoft software was not there anymore.  Now I need my MS Word and Perfect and all the rest back.  Is there a way to do that without purchasing again at the store?  I have an Acer Notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium and it came with Microsoft Office 2007 but don't know which one, I think Standard.  Thanks.

Answer:did a recovery 2 months ago and now...

If it shipped with those products liscensed and installed one option is to use the hidden recovery partition to restore the machine to Day One status...Probably not a good option since all your data will be gone. The other option is to find an Office CD of the same version and do a re-install and use your liscense key to re-activate.

Hey,
I havent been posting in these forums for 4 months now, a lot of things have changed in the CPU world I'm sure. I've actually been waaaaaay to busy with schoolwork and other activities to actually check out this site. The layout is much different than before, I'll get used to it. But anyway, the reason I am posting here is that I want to know what new has happened in the past 4 months... I'm sure a lot has changed (wat the heck is windows XPsp2???), I just thought instead of going to all the manufacturers websites to see whats new, I thought I'd ask you guys. So, what is new?

I ended up with the job but her ISP kept closing the connection so was unable to complete the task.Question: Should I just download the up to date version of AVG from my computer onto a disc then uninstall her old copy and re-install the new one?Seems like the simplest way to me?ClockP.S. Have had another try since typing this post - still no joy!

Answer:AVG not updated for months!

Use Avast! It updates automatically as required and provides a verbal and written confirmation:click here

Answer:4 different BSODs in two months

Problem Devices:
Code:
Unknown Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&BE1018E&0&1 43
First thing to do is determine which device the above is pointing to. Do you have your chipset drivers installed?

Security Software: ??? I recommend either of these two setups:Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Good and Free system security combination.
Download and install the security setup of your choice, update the software, and then run a full scan of your system for viruses and malware. If you only install MSE, I would also suggest installing and updating Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download, but do not start the free trial/full version of Malwarebytes. Run a full scan with Malwarebytes after updating it. Post back the results.

Which ASUS P5K motherboard do you have installed? Please fill in your system specs more accurately by using System Info - See Your System Specs as a guide. Fill the specs in on your profile, not in a post in this thread.

I turned of my pc so it wouldn't just be running for a while for no reason. i turned it on a week or 2 ago and there is just no picture. ive narrowed it down to my video card which is 2 years od, 7800 gt. i used that little digital to analog converter thing but i used the same one and plugged it into my laptop and works great. i've taken the video card out, cleaned the dust out, cleaned the inside of my computer. what should i do?

Answer:pc has been off for months, no now picture

No picture even after removing and reinserting the card? Try a new video card.

Question: BSOD for 2 Months

Hi,

I'm fighting a BSOD for about 50 days now, It's happening randomly in different situations for a minimum of two times daily.

I'm suspecting that my memory is the problem (2x2GB Chaintech APOGEE) as it appears in a weird way in Gigabyte easytune (some times appear as one memory module, other times with different frequency and properties for each module).

I ran Memtest86 with one module at a time and there were no errors.

I also ran the Windows 7 Memory test on both modules with no errors.

CPU: Intel i7-930

Mainboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R

Display: Geforce GTS 250 1GB

HDD: Seagate 1TB SATA

Windows Version: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Windows Type: Full Retail

Hardware Age: 2 Months

Windows Age: Around 50 Days (Repaired Two Days ago)

Running Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 11.0.0.232

I appreciate any help, This BSOD causes a serious pain & I lost work many times because of it.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:BSOD for 2 Months

One error is caused by Kaspersky.. will check further.. and others will be here to take a look. I would recommend removing it and replacing with MSE or another antivirus

Okay. I just did the whole reply with HJT logs and do combofix like a billion times over at GeeksToGo. All the malware/spyware was removed (apparently) from my system. Now, I've been scanning my system weekly with AVG8 and Spybot, but I seem to be missing this trojan thats affecting things on my system.

I CANNOT RUN HIJACKTHIS. It wont let me. I uninstalled, reinstalled, did it 3 times. Cant run it. Wtf? =( The trojan must be pretty serious for it to block a program from me using.

I honestly do not know what to post here because I cannot run Hijackthis. I'm running WinXP 32bit SP3, on a Q6600 quad core at 2.4ghz, 2ghz DDR2 ram, and I need help ridding this spyware from my system. I would attempt combofix and kaspersky myself, but I dont know the scripts for CF and I figure the infection would just outsmart me anyways.

I need some advice on what I can do first, as I have no logs or anything to post here so far. I can list the symptoms aswell.

Symptoms:
Google searches are redirecting me and opening new tab windows, sometimes directing me to a completely different site then what I was searching for.
Certain sites say I have been infected by a trojan which is DOS attacking them when I try to connect to their servers.
MSN Hotmail isnt able to open whatsoever. I have to go through mail.live.ca to get to my inbox. Buttons on msn arent working??
I do my fairshare of downloading, and certain sites wont even let me connect anymore, even though I am able to connect on this network ... Read more

So what will happen with my:

Windows 8 Release Preview
Evaluation Copy. Build 8400

Is there a way to turn it from a preview into Windows 8 Pro?
Can I install over it? (and keep everything the way it is: programs, settings, etc.)
Can I continue to use it as a preview or will my computer evaporate into a cloud of smoke if I do that?

I have been reading this specific section for a about 6 months now. I knew that I would be getting a laptop sooner or later. Basically, what has been mentioned the most is getting an ASUS. And I would, but I have a few more specific things that I need and I am not sure if it would work out. I also have a lot of questions so please bare with me.

I will be using this laptop for school work and gaming. I don't really care about photos or entertainment...

I want it to hopefully last through college so around 5 years from now. And I want to play games a pretty good quality. Games like:

SC2, Diablo 3 (when it comes out), Portal 2, Elder Scrolls Skyrim, Minecraft, Civilization 5, MMOs. So yeah, higher end games.

I can deal with it being heavy, but I don't want a hulking laptop. And there are a few specific questions/comments I have:

1: Can I get away with an Alienware? When I was looking at the "build a laptop" section it seemed a lot easier to get mouse, headset, and games downloaded. I would get the extended (or which ever one is the best) warranty. So I assume that comes with better support than usual.
-And if I can, which specific Alienware do you think would benefit me the most?

2: If I really shouldn't get an Alienware and get an ASUS or toshiba, then if I get it from Newegg, is Windows 7 already downloaded? Or do I have to go buy another one of those?

Price range- $1100-1200 U.S , but I am willing to go a little higher for a good laptop with a good warranty, ... Read more

Answer:I am going to buy a new laptop in the next few months

Don't get Alienware. They rip your off so bad, you could save 25% of that buying other computers that matches it.

Windows 7 is preloaded on a system. All you need to do is set up user accounts.

Toshibas are generally better for gaming. ASUS is good for light gaming and good multitasking.

Could go with this:

Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Satellite A665-3DV12X Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 5400rpm Blu-Ray Burner NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

Hey guys, about 2 months ago my 30" dell lcd went, video card and mobo ( replaced it all except the 30" dell which im still trying to fix) today my 20" dell went, is this is just a coincident or could there be something else im not considering, possibly a faulty APC battery backup, or maybe something in my computer that's causing this.

thanks.

Answer:2 DEAD LCD in 2 months!?!?!?!

This would be the time I'd start accusing poltergeists. I know they live in my home office and do all kinds of mischief at night while I'm asleep. They've only killed one Samsung LCD monitor here.

In the real world, it's likely a terrible coincidence. It's slightly possible that your APC unit allowed a nasty power glitch to pass in to these guys and kill them. That would be harder than winning the lottery. It's most likely you ended up with the statistical anomaly of two bad LCD monitors, along with that video card and motherboard.

Do you have a lot of power outages and glitches? Do you live in lightning alley or some area with lots of thunderstorms? I still remember the night when there was a thunderstorm here and I saw bolts of electricity flashing along the chain holding the ceiling fan in our bedroom. I fully expected to go downstairs and find our computers in a smoldering pile on the floor. Nothing - fully protected by APC UPS units! Then there was the time at work when a guy hit a power pole with his car down the street and caused a 27,000 volt line to fall on the 600 volt line feeding the building where I work. There were two washing machine sized APC UPS units in the lab - they both were fried and took some PCs with them.

I know this may not help much, but you may have enjoyed reading it.

Bye.

G'day guys

I purchased a copy of NAV and NIS when I bought my new comp about a year ago and then realised it only lasted 3 months, so every three months I have to TOTALLY wipe any trace of both from my comp and reinstall and worst of all, download all the updates again...

Sooooooooo I was wondering..... Is there any way I can go to regedit and just delete the registration and then just register again??.... without all the uninstalling and installing of the actual program??

I have looked in regedit but wasn't sure what to do, so wisely have done nothing so far....

It expires again tomorrow and I think I will CRY if I have to do all that crap over again.....

Cheers and thanks

Answer:reregistering NAV every 3 months

instead of using NAV and NIS, why not use a free antivirus such as Avast! or AVG? Then install a free firewall like Sygate or Zone-Alarm?

Question: BSOD 3 months

For around the past three months I have been getting the bsod. I have changed hds and reformatted twice to load the os but still get this bsod. Whats strange is that the puter may work fine for days and then crash or then start to crash over and over (reformat). I am getting tired of reinstalling the os so is ther anyone here who can read these minidumps and maybe tell me what to look at first, thanks.

Answer:BSOD 3 months

For some reason I cant read the minidump files. What errors are you
getting when it bluescreens? When you format are you using the
xp format utility?, if so bad idea, xp does a very poor job at that. If
you had os problems before the format, you will more than likely
have the same problems after the format.

Every few months one of PCs at my home is really unstable. That PC is a 'spare' machine, so that wasn't a big problem. But it's really irritable because I have to set off power supply for a couple of minutes and hope it'll work stable again for next few months or so.

Could somebody check my 2 newest minidumps and analyze it? Yesterday I installed the drivers for gpu. Sadly, today saw BSOD again.

OS: Windows 8, but earlier on Windows 7 also was the same problem.
Problem: various BSOD every few months.

My machine:
- mobo: Asus P5Q Deluxe (bios version: 2301);
- CPU: E8500 (never overlocked);
- GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4650 (sapphire version with heatpipes, GPU temperature from gpu-z: ~37-38C, I don't play any games);
- RAM: 2x2GB, corsair dominator PC2-8500 (tested also with some Kingston 2x2GB sticks);
- power supply: 550W (bequiet darkpower pro);
- antivirus: Avast;

The first signs of instability: firefox crashes, then later (sometimes) Visual Studio crashes.
This time the crashes started when PC was running more than a day doing some calculations. As always, Firefox crashed first.

BSODs on Windows 8:
DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
and one more BSOD, but I didn't write it down.

Earlier on Windows 7:
error codes:
1A - memory_management
3B - system_service_exception
D2,
24,
1 - apc_index_mismatch

Errors 0x1 & 0x3b often showed when Visual Studio was running.

Hi,
Since 5 months, I got a BSOD when I'm doing some basics things: Looking at Facebook, playing games (even flash games) I've decided after that to make a DualBoot to Windows 8, previously I had Windows 7, There was no BSOD for 3 days, and it began...

What did I make:
Memtest86+ = No errors, runned 4 passes
Tried to use one stick of ram = Worked for almost 1 day.
Swap the sticks of ram in the slots = Worked for 1 month (wtf happened there)
Ran driver verifier = got a blue screen with rdyboost.sys as the error.
Install all the drivers and make updates (Bios, chipset)
I've BSOD while writing this, the error flagged was rdyboost.sys, I think it's the error, but don't know how to delete or deactivate this thing..
Thanks in advice.

Forgot to add : I have this PC since 2 years.

Answer:Many BSOD since 5 months

I don't have time to look through all of those mini-dumps but the latest ones I have looked at don't seem to be pointing to anything in particular. This might indicate a hardware problem or a buggy/out-of-date driver.

You have some old drivers you should consider updating to Windows 8 64bit versions or un-installing/removing if un-needed:

AtiPcie.sys - ATI PCIE Driver for ATI PCIE chipset or ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Found in my ATI video drivers (I have an Intel chipset) (2009): Driver Reference Table
AsIO.sys - Asus PCProbe Utility: Driver Reference Table (please un-install this and anything related to ASUS Utilities Suite, known BSOD creator)
ASACPI.sys - Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility. Also a part of many Asus utilities: Driver Reference Table (please un-install this, known BSOD creator)
LGBusEnum.sys - Logitech Keyboard: Driver Reference Table
netr73.sys - D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless USB Adapter(rev.C) ** DISCONTINUED **: Driver Reference Table

Please update your AMD chipset drivers:

AMD Chipset Drivers

Remove the drivers related to BSODs above using control panel/un-install.

Update your Logitech Keyboard driver: Keyboards

Not sure about the D-Link Airplus Wireless USB Adapter, there doesn't seem to be a Windows 8 64bit driver for it. It's quite an old piece of gear so I recommend not using it in Windows 8. I recommend un-installing the driver via control panel if possible or disabling it by going into: c:\windows\system32\drivers and renaming the driver to ... Read more

*sigh* OK, here goes:

So I designed and built this PC as a "budget build" for myself and my boyfriend back in October as gaming computers. However, we have identical issues, and after several attempts to fix them after so many months... I must humble myself and ask you guys for help, even if I did something stupid

Specs of my comp are below. As I'm typing this, I'm going through the Mobo guide to see if I really did just get parts that do not match up, but go ahead and point out any red flags.

So. The problem.

I have been blue screening constantly over the past 7 months or so. At least once every day. Whenever I have a blue screen, I have one of two messages pop up; Memory Management, or Page Fault Error. The first one is way more prominent, about 90-10.

I don't get it. I had an IT friend help me put the damn thing together so that I wouldn't do anything stupid, but this keeps happening. I'm almost thinking I have the RAM in the wrong slots in the mobo, but I am unsure if that would make me blue screen once a day (or more).

I have reformatted Win 7 *many* times thinking it was the problem, and I'm at the point where I don't think it's a software issue.

I'm open to all ideas, comments and solutions <3

Thank you!

(I have read the building a comp guide that's stickied at the top, but I must have overlooked something)

EDIT: Just realized that I need to post my specs manually.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard! I STRONGLY suggest not using controller drivers older than mid-2012 with SSD's.
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.

Hello there.I brought my HP laptop from PC World in Feb, I'm still paying for it through finance. The only stock they had was their display model so I brought that one.The laptop won't turn on anymore. When I plug the power in it flashes white next to the charging hole and that's it. I've tried removing the battery for 60 seconds and re-trying but it doesn't work. Please can somebody help. Thanks

Answer:Won't turn on - only had for 4 months.

It does still have full HP warranty so if worse comes to worse. You have tried the hard reset which is the easiest thing to try. The only other thing that might be easy to do is check the AC adapter to see if it is putting out power. Take it to any electronics store and they can test it with a voltage meter. If the AC adapter is good I am afraid you have had a catastrophic hardware failure (dead motherboard) which will require warranty replacement.

Hi folks,
I`ve got Vista Business running for almost half a year now, and am still
lovin` it.
But I did slow down a little in the last 2 weeks.
Did anyone make *positive experiences* with speed-up-tools for Vista so far?
You know the stuff, registry cleaners and all... :-)

Answer:Need a boost after 5 months

Hi,
> You know the stuff, registry cleaners and all... :-)
Danger Danger Danger - don't go there. Registry cleaners do nothing for
system performance and may actually be detrimental. They frequently
misidentify and remove needed entries. Dead-end entries do not inhibit
performance and removing them serves no purpose, and some that appear to be
dead entries may not be such.
If your system has slowed down, check for spyware, look at recently
installed updates (from Windows, your antivirus provider, and your
antispyware vendor), and check for programs that have become unnecessarily
enabled in the startup axis.
