Lenovo y50 failed to boot (default boot device missing or boot failed)

Question: Lenovo y50 failed to boot (default boot device missing or boot failed)

Recently had my computer crash and come up with this message. Went through the bios and discovered the hard disk was not being recognized. So I opened it up and unplugged/replugged it in. It is still giving me the same message and wanting me to boot from a network, but now in the bios it is recognizing the hard disk. Any other ideas? Thanks a ton in advance for anyones help!!

Preferred Solution: Lenovo y50 failed to boot (default boot device missing or boot failed)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo y50 failed to boot (default boot device missing or boot failed)

Hi Oldsm66 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.
You may want to check for the hard drive integrity .
If you have a spare harddrive to boot from or use a rescue USB drive to boot into and run diagnotics .
You can also try to back up your files from the original harddrive once booted from the rescue media if needed.

Update us how it goes.

Answer:Z510 'Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed' after BIOS update

You should probably reset your BIOS since I believe it is messed up now. Take out the battery.Press the power button for a minute. (just to make sure it is reset, usually 20-30 seconds work)Connect the battery and boot.

Hi,

I have a Yoga 2 pro.

I recently formatted my drive and got rid of all partitions. The reinstalled windows 8.

Everything worked fine until I went to the bios and changed it from legacy support to uefi boot.

I now get this pop up when i boot up.
Default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select 'boot manager' to choose a new boot device or boot recovery media.

I have no reccovery media.

I tried to restart the mchine while pressing F2 but I always get into the same screen.

If I press enter I then go from the pop up to the boot manager where the list is empty so i cannot boot any other drives since there are non to select.

I am not sure what else to do...

Please help.

I just bought a lenovo laptop, which came with preinstalled Windows 8.
When I turn it on the first thing I see is:
EFI network 0 for IPv4 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed
Checking media (Fail)
EFI network 0 for IPv6 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed

And then a blue screen:
Default Boot Device Missing or boot failed
Insert recovery media and hit any key
Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media

What should I do?
Thank you!

Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed on U430

hi there,

Welcome to the Forums.

The Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed means that it can't find the files needed to load Windows. These files maybe missing, or the HDD itself is faulty.

Things that you can try:
Boot into the BIOS by pressing Fn+F2 on boot-up and verify that the HDD is detected.
   - Link to picture

If the HDD is detected, you can do one of the following:

If you have a created a recovery drive then you can use it to restore Windows.
Press the OneKey Recovery button to restore the factory settings (note that all data on the OS partition will be wiped out)
If the machine came with Windows 8.1, you can check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One) then follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD/USB flashdrive and use it to re-install Windows

If the HDD is not detected then you may need to contact lenovo on how to go about getting the unit for serviced.

Answer:Yoga 2 pro default boot device missing or boot failed

hi Richarddaou,

When you boot into the BIOS, is the SSD is detected in the Information tab?
 - Link to image

If it is then you may want to consider reloading the OS by pressing the OneKey Recovery button.
 - Link to image

Otherwise, if the SSD is not being detected anymore then this is a sign of an HDD failure and you need to contact lenovo (for service) or the place of purchase (if it's still possible to exchange the unit).

Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

hi anaskou,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is there any external USB devices plugged-in to the system? If yes, try to remove it and observe. Otherwise, when you boot into the BIOS, is the HDD getting detected?

- Link to picture

From the looks of it, it's either the OS is corrupted or the HDD is failing. If the HDD is detected under the BIOS, consider pressing the OneKey Recovery button to reload the OS (all data will be re-written). If this fails, you may need to contact lenovo and report the issue.

I have a 13" Yoga 2 Pro that's about 2.5 yrs old, it is currently running Windows 8.1This past week Windows ran an update and later that day it shut the laptop down without warning or interaction from me. Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

Hi mzayas ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The main concern here is the hardware detection of the motherboard that there is a connected harddrive.
BIOS should at least show it , but if the harddrive itself is bad or maybe the contact in-between then repair options would not work.

It would help reseating the harddrive ( remove and check the contacts and place it back in ).

As per your data hoping that it is not a bad harddrive , slaving it on a harddrive enclosure to connect to a different pc or have a service recovery center back it for you .

After reseating the harddrive , load back to BIOS and check if the harddrive is detected , F9 to reset defaults F10 to save and exit .

If still stays non detected then tech support most likely be replacing the harddrive so you can inform them that you have important file on it that you wish to try back up.

I am having a Boot Device Missing / Boot Failed problem with my nearly new B50-80 Lenovo. I turn power off and on again and it says 'Checking Media'....then does circular route to Boot Device Missing then I'm unable to use any keys (like arrow) to select something other than 'EFI PXE Network' and it goes right back to 'Checking media' then 'Boot Device Missing / Boot Failed' or 'EFI Network 0 for IPv4 boot failed'

I cannot check any menu's or do anything other than hit return. HELP!

Answer:B50-80 - Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

The first step would be to reset the bios.   FN+ F2 to get to the bios, then reset to factory spec.  There are rare times this will help.  If you still can't boot after the bios reset and have a warranty?  Time to contact Lenovo. The next step would be to use a boot cd or usb drive and run a drive diagnostic.  I've been using Steve Gibsons drive rite for years, it's not free and I'm not familiar with anything else to make a recommendation.   That should narrow it down to either a software/drive corruption issue  (easy) or the drive and/or the drive controller (hard).  Good Luck!

Not sure if this question has been answered before but my laptop screen is displaying this message:
"Default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or boot recovery media."

I don't know how this happened or how to fix it, I read online that I would need to access the BIOS setup. I did this but it prompted me to put in a password and I don't know what it is.
Any advice would be really helpful, I need it fixed asap.

Since I'm using someone else's laptop at the moment I don't have the technical specifications but it is an Acer Aspire V5 series Windows 8.
Thank you in advance!

Answer:default boot device missing or boot failed

You can try Hiren's boot cd, using Mini XP to boot and try to check if your HDD is still working and save some data on an external USB pen or HDD. http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip just unzip and burn the .iso on a USB pen (you can use Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US ) or CD.

You should not be changing them unless you are prepared for surprises like the one that you already encountered. You did not mention why you made the change but you did mention that you want to reformat. Reformatting can be done without changing UEFI to Legacy. Your objective now should be to go back to bios and put back those settings to the original condition. How? you have to find a way on how to do it. You might remove the original hdd and replace it with a temporary one just so you can go to the bios and make the chnages. The removed hdd should be diagnosed in another unit for a possible repair.

I have a y500 Lenovo gaming laptop with Windows 8, and for the past couple of days, each time my laptop is put in hibernation or powered down, whenever I turn it back on it gives me this message:"Default Boot Device Missing or boot failedInsert recovery media and hit any key Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device to boot or recovery media."Then it brings me to a page with 3 boot options, and only the Windows Boot Manager works. I'm doing scans and hardware scans but so far nothing is being found. This laptop is less than 2 months old so I really don't think it's a hardware problem, and I haven't downloaded anything recently that may have messed this up. I would contact Lenovo but I'm unsure if this is an issue with the laptop, or Windows 8. Any ideas?

I have a Lenovo G50 80L0 laptop and lately I have been getting the "Windows Boot Manager" and "EFI IPv4/6" failed messages. I have looked at many different things, but have run out of options. I cleaned out most of my laptop with compressed air and even cleaned the Hard Drive the best I could. My laptop is less than a year old, and I have no warranty since I bought it refurbished. Here are some things that might be helpful to know:

I hear clicking noises inside the laptop when I start it up, I'm pretty sure it is the fan
My laptop spends alot of time asleep rather than off
I have gotten it to work before, but I have no idea how
I have tried switching boot methods, but they all fail

Please help if you know anything. I really don't want to have to pay money to get this fixed, and HDD's are way too expensive.

Answer:G50 - Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

Hi Tristin_Wagg ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Just to set expectation , such maybe the harddrive failing hoping that its just a corrupt bootable Windows.
You can try checking on the BIOS by turning off the laptop and using the novo button (item2 page9) to power on .
BIOS set up on the main page should show the harddrive , if not you may need to reseat ( remove and put back firmly inside making sure that the contacts are good (page37) .

Usually counter checking harddrive detection by placing it on an enclosure then plugging it on another computer can help to check . Would there still be any clicking noise without the harddrive?

Hi phelly ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The IT guys may have also checked the BIOS if the SSD is being detected.
Usually reseating the M.2 SSD (page 36) from its location and placing it back assuring that contacts are ok can help as well as loading the BIOS defaults then restart.

If you would be having the same issue , I would suggest to call in technical support or have a representative in UK start a repair ticket for you and get their recommendation.

Welcome!I'm writing because some serious problems with G580 (59-346104) occured.I've decided to change my C (Windows8_OS) pearition size (850 GB is far to big ammount of space for system files only, I need much more space for my files at another partition). I used the AOMEI Partition Assistant Home to resize C to 150 GB and after that I assigned the 250 GB/each of my 3 new partitions which I need for my files. After applying changes, restarting and resizing the space, AOMEI told that it's required to restart for further resizing process. When computer finished the loading process, the blue screen appeared (with " ") that says "system encountered problems with boot-up and will be re-run, check Inaccessible boot device error" (I don't remember the accurate message but such is the sense of) and so he does but after another restart this message apperas one more time and so on. I've tried to start a recovery but when I run computer with NOVO button and afterch choosing recovery, the system says "Lenovo recovery system boot failed" and then computer starts the "normal" boot proces (which lead to the problem described above). As soon as I know (at least I guess so) where is problem, I have no idea how can I repair this.I'll be very grateful If someone will help me.Gaclav

Hi there,

I've recently built a new rig and I've had continuous problems trying to boot. I have two HDDs and one SDD. It seems when the two HDDs are plugged in, i can sometimes boot ok, and most times i get:

Quote:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Status: 0xc000000e

Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Or

Please select a boot device, or something to the affect.

I've updated to the latest bios on my new mobo ( Gigabyte z97x SOC Force ) and ive done a fresh install of windows several times on the SDD. I also ran crystal disk to check health on the SDD and it came back healthy.

It seems mostly my boot problems are linked to plugging in the two other HDDs, though I've no idea why this would be, and how to fix it? Is it a motherboard problem or a HDD problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I have tried everything !! everything!. I've been trying for days and i hate asking for help, but i just cant get it to work!

I have an msi wind, and it runs Xp, but i tried dual booting osx and everything goes fine. Though now i cannot access Win Xp cause it says im missing the hal.dll.

So there is something wrong with the boot.ini file.

What can i do?

Things i have tried
1) Modify the boot.ini from osx but the file is protected!
2) Use the recovery disk but i dont have a cd drive! and getting a usb is not an option.
3) Safe mod or command promt mode did not work
4) Tried installing Ubuntu onto an external hard disk so i can modify the partitions, and i got ubuntu on my ext hdd now but when i in bios tell the pc to boot from usb it just have that flashing cursor and nothing happens!.

Seriously, for two days i have googled everything and been to msi wind forums, but i cant find a solution.. Im not that kind of guy who does not try before he asks!

How can i make that Ext Hdd bootable?? Or can i some how get Recovery console to run from Usb flash drive??

I need my msi wind for school, so i really could use some help. Thanks in advance, if you need more info please tell.

Answer:[SOLVED] Cannot access Win Xp (dual boot failed) hal.dll missing, cannot boot from Ex

I don't think there is anything you can do unless you boot from an optical disc. That means getting an external optical drive. But google for how to make an ASUS EEE PC boot from a USB flash drive and see if that procedure will work for you with the Msi Wind also.

Hello and thank you in advance for ANY help you may offer. I have an Aspire M5 which will suddenly not boot and gives the message "Default boot device missing or boot failure" and asks for Recovery Media to be inserted. I have a usb recovery media and also have signed up with Acer cloud. With my recovery media I have tried to Refresh and Reset my PC as to no avail. When i try a System Restore is gives me  an error and says "you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart, select operating system, and then select System Restore." Unfortunately there is no operatingsystem to select when I restart. I am very concerned about losing the data on my hard drive, it is more valueable than the drive itself. Now I'm trying to check if somehow my files are backed up on Acer Cloud - is there a way to do this? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Not good. i suspect an HDD failure, the only way to check it, is to take it off from your laptop and connect it to another PC with an external HDD bay.

Hello,

I have dual boot in my laptop with Ubuntnu 14.04 LTS and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Today after working on Ubuntu I restarted and switched to Windows and as soon as it logged in I noticed the battery was 0%. I thought maybe it was some kind of glitch or something (silly me!) so I just pulled the power supply and the laptop abruptly turned off. My laptop battery is completely dead now...won't charge at all and after that incident when I tried to log back into Windows it showed this error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I don't have an installation disc, I tried pressing F8 and none of the options there helped. Ubuntu still works totally fine though. So I'm guessing it is not some hard drive crash and my data are fine in Windows but I just can't boot into it! Please Help!!

Hi, I recently discovered this awesome forum, I'm wondering if someone can help me with this issue. I'm really desperate ...

My tablet's model is Linx 1010 (Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33Ghz, 2GB RAM) with Microsoft Windows 10 32 bits pre-installed on it. I have been using it for more than two years. But suddenly, last week I tried to boot the tablet as usual, and I faced with this error on it:

Windows Boot Manager boot failed.

Upon pressing OK a new message appears:

Upon pressing OK another message appears:

And finally, upon pressing OK, my tablet's UEFI shows up:

Ok, this is all what I have tried:

1) I have made a USB stick with Rufus softwre (selecting FAT 32 file system, GPT partition for UEFI boot) and Windows 10 PRO 32 bits on it.
No success. USB is recognized, in fact the system tries to boot from it, but it fails:

USB is recognized on Boot Manager UEFI option menu:

2) Manually boot from Boot Manager UEFI Option Menu
No success. Same error message described on 1)

3) I installed another 32-bit image (in case the one of Win10 was corrupted) in ANOTHER USB stick
For instance, I installed this image on the new USB How to Reset Linx 7 / 8 / 10 Tablet Password with A Bootable USB Drive | Password Recovery
No success. Exactly the same messages from 1)

4) Pushed Power button and Vol+ simultaneosly, for 10-15 seconds

Answer:Can't boot my Tablet. Windows Boot Manager boot failed.

gramenauer,

Welcome to Ten Forums!

Assuming the Linx tablet does not support 32-bit legacy BIOS mode, and that the Windows version you are trying to install matches the tablet's architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).

As far as I know, to repair the EFI Bootloader in Windows 10 normally you need to get the tablet to boot from the USB recovery media and get to the Advanced Options screen to open the command prompt.

However, have seen where Easy Recovery Essentials, (by Neosmart) has helped in some cases:
Fix UEFI Boot: Fix for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10

If no luck with ERE, is there any possibility of contacting Linx for some guidance?
Sometimes these support crews have to be called (if phone number is available) in order to get any kind of help.

It's not a win7 problem, it's a boot manager problem. Next time do only bootrec /fixmbr or bootrec /fixboot . I want to know which of the two command did fix it.

Hi to all! I face a new (?) variant of the well known "efi usb device" or "efi network 0 for ipv4..." Problem:  My box is a B50-70 Notebook. After installation of a new hdd months ago, I used several linux systems without any problems. There is no windows os installed. The last week i confused the machine by installing a new uefi boot system aside of a legacy boot system, and things went wrong: When I start the computer, the well known message "efi usb device (generic usb storage) boot failed" is shown. The hdd is detected, shows the bios information mask, but it will not be shown on the mask, where I can decide between legacy and uefi boot. I tried every single hint which is given in the net to that topic: every change of the bios will not be saved nor executed. I cannot choose between legace and uefi boot, secure boot disabling will not be executed, uninstalling and reinserting the hdd or the small battery will not work, nothing works at all. I tried new install with usb formatted in fat32, ntfs and whatsoever. I even tried to boot with a new windows 8.1 from usb and it didn't work. DVDs, nothing, is recognized by the bios. Updating this bios seems to be only possible via windows and a special windows tool. I bought a new laptop and in order to move my data to it, I took out the hard drive of my old laptop and hooked it up to a SATA device. After that, I put it back in the old laptop. When I turned it on, it would not boot because of the device (hard drive) being inaccessible with an error code 0xc000000e.

I do not have the Windows installation CD to run the repair, I ran a BIOS diagnostic and it found nothing, the boot order in BIOS is correct. Any further ideas?

Answer:Boot selection failed because of inaccessible device

What OS is on each machine?

If they're both Win7 64-bit then create a system repair disc on the working machine and boot the other using that disc and select repair from the menu.

If they're different, you could try downloading the ISO here. Be sure to select the correct bitwise ISO (32-bit or 64-bit) and then create a system repair boot disc.

Then follow this tutorial: Startup Repair

If you get access to another computer that is working properly; I would try and download the hard drive diagnostic program onto a flash drive and run it on the computer that isnt working properly and see if it comes up with any errors. Also what are your system specs? and is it a custom built or a oem system?

Recently I shrank one of the partition on the data drive in order to enlarge the other partition on the data drive. The enlarged data drive contains the folders of some installed games but the system disk is separate and was not altered in this way. I'm pretty sure that I hibernated and recovered from hibernation at least once since that change was made.

Could it be that the OCZ drive has developed a fault? Or would it then be unable to even display this message?

When I attempt to repair the installation using the Windows 7 disc, the operating system isn't listed. I don't think that there are any drivers for me to load - I think it's supposed to be automatic (the driver must be a part of Windows own included set).

Im not saying your issue is ram related but i will say its most likely hardware not software , and im not thinking its your hard drive , try reseating all your hardware maybe if problem persists remove i stick of ram leaving only one stick , remove anything not needed for boot , external hard drivers , keyboard mouse etc tryu resetting bios to defaults

If you have an XP disk and can boot into Recovery Console, run chkdsk /r

There are a couple of ways I backup client's documents, emails, etc.

1. Spotmau
2. Remove hard drive and use an external USB enclosure attached to another computer. This is my preferred method because I can copy and paste and also run chkdsk.

I have an Intel i5, Windows 7 Ultimate, and an SSD as my main drive and 2 SATA HDDs.

One day, I got a BSOD appeared and my PC restarted restarted. After that, the following error appeared:

Window failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1.Insert ....
2. .... ... status: 0xc000000e info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Also I noticed that BIOS only detected one of HDDs, not SSD neither other HDD.

Sometimes, Windows can be started, but it doesn't work very well.
When trying to copy data from F: to an external USB, it copies for a short time and then Win7 becomes unresponsive. This also happens in safe mode.

After several reboots, now Windows will not boot and I get the error "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." And the BIOS only detects the SSD.

UPDATE: my disks:

HDDs
WDC WD10EARS-22Y5B1
Seagate ST31000528AS

SSD
FM-25S2S-120GBP2 - G.SKILL

Any suggestions?

Answer:the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Hmm, that looks rather choppy. Sounds like your disks have a physical connection problem. I suggest you check that.

Also, if the SSD seems to connect but the OS cannot be loaded, that would suggest that your bootmgr does not reside on the SSD.

Download an burn the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last entry on the webpage). With that you can inspect your disks without the OS. Just load the CD.

Hi there

Hoping someone can help me with this booting problem.

About six months ago my hard drive failed and I had buy a new HD and re-install Win 7. I had created a backup on an external HD, but for some reason I could not restore the computer using this backup. I'm not sure if any of the backup data transferred onto the HD when I tried to do this. I therefore did a clean install of Win 7 and then copied the files I wanted across from the backup on the external HD.

Now, whenever I switch on the laptop the first screen I seen is the from the Windows Boot Manager, which says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.... and it gives the "status as 0xc0000225. Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I then hit enter and the laptop boots successfully and all is good. The only reason why I have decided to fix this now is because I want to upgrade to Win 10, and I donit want this to cause any problems during installation.

The C drive is where I installed the new copy of Win 7 Op System and the E drive is the partition I created to store my data files etc. I'm not sure what the other drives are?

I have attached screens of the screen descibed above and also the Windows disk management screen.

Thanks for your help.

Sfiir, welcome to the forum. The error messages that are receiving are telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You should replace it with a hard drive the same size or larger so the System Recovery media will work. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Hello,
Installed Acronis True Image Home 2011 a couple days ago. I did not setup any items within Acronis yet for backups, etc. After install my system appeared O.K. and have shutdown/restarted several times without issue. Yesterday, the computer shut down inadvertently, then at boot i get this message:

Title Screen: Windows Boot Manager
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Problem? I suspect something with Acronis damaged by Windows 7 boot files.
How to fix????

In reading the various postings on the web (including Windows 7 forum!), it seams that Windows Startup Repair would be the best bet to resolving my issue. I put the DVD in, reboot, I see a scroll bar the bottom and text says "loading files....", then I see the "Starting Windows" splash screen with the Windows 7 logo...and that's it. The system never gets to a point where I can choose my language, select repair options, etc.

So....I read on the forums the Easy BCD would be a good tool to fix my issues. I downloaded it on a separate system and check it out. It looks like a GUI based program, so I'm confused on how to run it on my Windows 7 system that won't boot. Can I make a bootable version of Easy BCD?

Is correcting the BCD my issue? I don't know

I loaded Partition Commander 11 to check things out...I see a "System Reserved" partition which has bootmgr and the BCD files on it, I also see my partition where Windows 7 is ... Read more

Answer:oxc000000e Boot failed-required device is inaccessible

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized full Disk Management drive map with listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

Not sure how Win7 booted if you deleted SysReserved partition then only marked Win7 partition Active but didn't run Repair a few times to write the System boot files to 7 partition with only it's HD plugged in.

Possible that Win7 may be booting off the XP partition which is why we need to see the screenshot and know what you want to do.

0xc000000f -- The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I am receiving this error after installing a new hard drive in my Dell inspiron 15r N5010. I can get to windows upon fist installation of the OS but when I reboot I get this. Any ideas?

Answer:0xc000000f -- The boot selection failed because a required device is i

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. We are creating the partition here to mark it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

Hi, I know a lot of people have posted this but I think mine is different to theirs.

I took a SSD drive used to boot my sons pc, placed it in my computer and cloned it with Norton ghost onto a bigger drive.

When I put the new drive in his PC I got the error "boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I put his old drive back in, and got the same error as I assume because I placed it in another PC with a boot drive, it removed the boot capability?

I have tried to do a startup repair etc, but none of that will work.

Can I get his old drive to work again? All the info is on there, and I have a fresh install of windows 7 on a separate drive so I can boot in and look at his SSD, but am unsure how to continue.

Google has NOT been my friend!

Answer:boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

With both the original boot drive and the new drive with a fresh copy of windows in it, I went into the installation cd and was going to see if both versions came up, but before it gave me any selectable options it said it had fixed an error and would I like to reboot.

After I did it went into a dual boot screen with windows 7, and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recovery) options.

When I select the recovery version it boots into the drive like a dream, with everything there, so I closed the system, removed the new drive with the fresh version on it and I now get the missing ntldlr message, so I guess I can fix this with normal bootrec etc. commands.

I'll post on how I get on!

I was removing duplicate files from my PC with dupeguru when this error happened. I'm assuming something went wrong somewhere. When I start up I get the below message:

Now, I kind of anticipated messing this up so I created a restore point just in case but I still can't get it to work.
Here's the process I went through:
Checked boot order - Ok.
Start-up Repair - Failed.
Load last known working config - Failed.
System Restore - Failed, then cleared the restore point.
Open in Safe Mode - Not showing Desktop.
It wouldn't recognize the repair Cd I had lying around so made a bootable repair on USB and tried the above options that way to no avail. I then created an installation on USB and when I go through it I can see the drives/folders etc however, if possible, I'd like to avoid a re-install.
As above, when I tried the system restore it failed and then seems to have cleared the restore point as it says I have no points available when I try to do it again.

Hi all,

I'm desperately in need of help.

I just talked my gf into restoring her dell inspiron 5010n. It was getting slow and running way too many background programs (she likes to download games). We also believed that it was infected due to some program glitches.

Anyway, after copying all of her personal files to discs, I tried to reset her computer to factory settings through the control panel recovery advanced options.

The option to recover from disc was available (I created the discs right after we took it out of the box about 18 months ago), but would not initialize upon clicking on that option.

So, I inserted the recovery disc 1 into the cd/dvd drive and initiated the recovery after restarting the computer. Everything seemed to go well.

Windows started up, and I began configuring her computer. Anyway, windows indicated it needed to restart after downloading 1 update.

When the computer restarted this time, the windows boot manager came up and said:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.

Answer:''Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible''

Old hard drives are mechanical devices with spinning platters and reciprocating heads. These moving parts cause wear. And, when this wear becomes great enough, it is no longer possible for the heads to zero in on exact locations where data is stored on the hard drive. In other words, it's simply worn out.

Do not use any tuning utility or tools on Windows 7. This is my sermon on this topic:

Quote:
Windows 7 is a totally different operating system than XP. Win 7 is not an evolution from XP. It is a totally new OS and even changed from Vista. Thus the wisdom we learned about XP - tweaking, cleaning, modifying for speed, etc - do not apply at all to Win 7. Forget that knowledge.

Windows is a closed source system. Developers of tuneup utilities and registry cleaners do not have the core code of Win 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience, most of which is not applicable to Win 7. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

There is almost no tweaking that can be done to Win 7 to speed it up. The system is designed to diagnose itself and take care of itself which it does remarkably well. Win 7 maintains itself and that includes the registry.

Tuneup utilities are pure snake oil. At best they do nothing except use resources. At worst, they can mess your system up, slowing it down, and even crash it. There is no tuneup utility out there anywhere that can speed Win 7 up and improve its performance, at least not at this time.

This isn't to say that the system does not need to be... Read more

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. I'd like to help you solve your issue but I need some clarifications: So i had a disc error and had to switch out my hard drive So, you had faulty HDD (disk) - what you mean you switched it - 1) you did install a brand new HDD - empty oneor2) you you took the HDD from another PC and placed it in this machine ? What you describe above sound like second scenario... but I need clarification.  In all cases, it's best to use HP Recovery media to restore the computer to factory default condition. Looking forward to your confirmation and I will provide you with next steps.

Ok so I've been getting a BSOD what seemed like once a week for the past 6 months on my laptop, which now won't even boot into windows. The first hdd was the first to go about a year ago as it is rarely even recognized anymore, so I just moved ship to the 2nd hdd which now seems to have followed suit. Before I go out and buy a new HDD a want to confirm that it is indeed the hdd and not memory, or just corrupt drivers or something simple to fix.

What's wierd is that when I try to do the recovery disk option or even boot from the original win 7 cd to do a fresh install, I get no where because its so god awful slow now. I literally had to leave it sit to load into the repair disk option menu for a good 3 hours. I can't even start a fresh install of win 7 because of how slow everything is.

I also can't press F8 to get into the boot selection menu to select safe mode, or last known good config etc...

I updated the bios which made no difference. I opened up the laptop and disconnected and reconnected the one hdd that was easiest to get to(the other is a bitch) and nothing. I also did a scandisk on the only hdd that gets recognized and in the options it said it had a partition size of 0, but had 2 million sectors to scan which it found 0 bad sectors in.

Also when it boots up now its not even half as loud as it used to be yet all the fans seem to be spinning.

Whats your opinion on this? For sure dead HDDs or could it be something else?

Why would a couple of dead hdds prev... Read more

I've been having a particularly odd error with my laptop and it is beginning to bother me.  I purchased a HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ak113na back in early August. It's been absolutely fine up until a couple weeks ago. From time to time when turning on the laptop instead of proceeding to the HP logo and then booting up, it will instead stay black for around a minute before displaying the 'The selected boot device failed. Press <Enter> to continue' message. The bizarre thing is that if I turn the laptop off and back on, eventually it will successfully boot - even if I get the message one or two times more.  It doesn't happen all too often - I'd say no more than in about 20% of times I try to boot - but I cannot work out what exactly is happening.  The laptop also occasionally turns on in the middle of the night - at exactly 00:27 each time. I presume there's some kind of scheduled thing occuring at this time, but no matter how much I snoop through control panel I cannot find a reason for this. It also appears that the boot device failure seems to go hand in hand with this as it seems to have a higher chance of happening the morning after it's turned itself on in the night, but I'm not sure if this is actually the case or if it's just my brain lumping these two strange things together. I have done virus scans, reset the boot order, and I always ensure I have no discs in the DVD/CD ROM drive nor USB peripherals plugged in whilst attem... Hello @Prburt0809 Welcome to the HP Support forum. The issue appears most likely due to incorrect BIOS settings re. Secure Boot and Legacy Mode.    Please, perform some basic hardware checks 1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button2. Power it on.2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one 3. Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1 If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check. Let me know the test results.   4. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F10 for BIOS setup options.Navigate the BIOS and find the option to reset to default/load default settings. Hello.

I previously had a Windows 7 installation on a 320gb hdd, but decided to reinstall on my 120gb ssd, leaving my previous install on the 320gb hdd in the meantime.

Install went OK, rebooted a few times after installing updates, etc. I decided to format the 320gb drive with the old install on it after copying some data from it onto the ssd with the new install. Format could not be done in Windows due to the option being greyed out, so I did so from the Windows 7 install CD. Rebooted, error appears from title.

"The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. "

Booted from CD again

1. ran startup repair with no change

2. Executed bootrec.exe commands /fixboot and /fixmbr, reboot, no change

3. Verified boot order and ssd recognized as Bootable in bios.

4. bootrec.exe /scanos = shows 1 windows install present on "C:/windows"

5. bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd = installation detected. Pressed y to add = "element not found"

I'd rather not reinstall and update and juggle all that data around again if possible. Any help is very appreciated.

Update: reinstalled. Meh

Hiya and welcome to SevenForums!

From my knowledge of these kinda BSODs(I'm not so good at solving these kinda BSODs) is that the 320GB harddrive had the 100MB reserved system data on it and you formatted it so you made the computer un-bootable. I have no idea how to solve it but i think that is the case.

Hi.

I'm facing an issue very similar to one mentioned in an expired thread I came across: "Windows dead 0xc000000e". I'm afraid I couldn't find a solution that worked for me in there. Also, I'm creating a new thread since that one is expired.

(Using the same screenshots as well, since the very same are applicable in my case)

A little background on my issue:

Everything seemed to be working fine, I was accessing a memory card when everything simply went into a non-responsive state, (the kind you can't recover from without pushing the reset button, which is what I did). I tried restarting a couple of times, every time Windows 7 (Ultimate) booted successfully, but then simply went into a non-responsive state after the desktop loaded (or I clicked anywhere). So I decided to look into recovery options, when I realized my Windows 7 disk was one of those which do not offer a repair option on the installation disk itself. So I obtained a recovery disk and tried repairing. The repair process worked like a charm. Then I rebooted only to find my system non-responsive again once loaded (same as before). Now I decided to look into reinstalling the OS. So I clicked on a "Next" option in the Installation disk at one point and it actually began installing when I remembered that I wanted to save my browser bookmarks and sessions and I immediately interrupted the installation within about a second of the process (probably the biggest mistake ... I am receiving this error, when I try and boot Windows 7.

I have run the Repair Startup option from the Installation DVD, and it performed a System Restore [only] the first time, but fails to resolve the error.

I believe this occurred, when I accidentally powered down the computer, while it was attempting to transition to/from Sleep/Standby Mode.

Reading other articles around the web (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/5da88257-837d-4475-ad6e-9ea8968826f4)
I get the impression that the accepted solution is a clean install.

Is a Clean Install the only way to resolve this error?

I can provide detailed specs and error reports to assist in any bug-hunting.

Thanks.

Go into your Bios and check to make sure that the right boot drive is selected. I've no idea why, but I've seen the boot drives get mixed in the bios setting on some systems resulting in the computer trying to boot from a non-bootable drive resulting in the error message you have received.

Hi, my Dell Dimension 660 (approximately 18 mos. old) would not allow me to log in yesterday - I repeatedly got the error message "User profile service failed to login / can't be loaded".

I tried accessing safe mode to address this, but did not find the "Safe Mode" that I'm used to... I did access something called the Aptio Setup Utility. I don't believe I inadvertently changed anything in it, but now receive a "No boot device available" statement upon trying to boot the computer. I also have seen the message "Previous attempts to boot have failed at checkout [00b4]" flash by a few times when trying to reboot, though not consistently.

The Dell diagnostics checks out without any problems with the motherboard, memory, or anything else. Although I initially had a CD in my CD drive, I've removed that (and have disconnected any other USB connections). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as I'm at a loss,

Dave

Answer:No boot device available; previous attempts failed at checkout 00b4

You can boot the Win7 disk for your version available in Reinstall tutorial below, select Repair on second screen, open a Command Line and enable Hidden Administrator from WinRE. Built-in Administrator - Enable from WinRE

Now you can go into Control Panel>User Accounts and create a New Administrative-level account to set it up and see if it runs correctly. If so transfer over your files gradually while you make sure all Programs will run from it and if not reinstall them. Then delete the old profile.

If the problem is not the User Account then work through the Troubleshooting steps which apply from either link below. You'll want to check for infection, check System File integrity, possibly do a Repair Install or Reinstall which are covered from within the OS or from boot in each tutorials.
