High disk usage, cpu usage Lenovo y50-70

Question: High disk usage, cpu usage Lenovo y50-70

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason. I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes. My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 14 month old Thinkpad E460 i7 with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD running Windows 10. Lately I've noticed that on starting up the laptop either from off or from hibernation, the Disk Usage is running at 100% for some time often 10-15 minutes before settling down. This is often with minimal transfer rates as shown below. The disk has been defragmented. This leads to a very sluggish laptop when it is at 100%. Trying to watch netflix is almost impossible for 10-15 minutes as the computer just can't seem to buffer the data on the hard disk.  I've checked with a 2 year HP laptop and even on startup disk usage is only around 50%. Anyone having similar problems.  Is this likely to be a hardware or software issue. I've tried updating the firmware to the HDD from the Lenovo website. I've had so many issues with this laptop I don't think I'll ever buy Lenovo again. 100% Disk Usage

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

The quickest way to find out I would think would be to click on the Process Tab in Task Manager and then click on the Disk column's header to sort it to show the processes with the highest disk access at the top.     Knowing what process, or processes are causing the high disk usage, may help you identify the culprit. If you are concerned about the hard disk, you can Right Click on Start, select Command Prompt Admin, and then in the window type:   chkdsk c:  and press Enter to scan the HD for errors.   I will not fix the errors, but if it finds any it will prompt you to run it again in fix mode:  chkdsk c: /f   and schedule it to run on the next boot. Good Luck,

Good day everyone,I just recently bought a new laptop which is a lenovo ideapad 110-14isk. When I booted it up, I noticed that it can't respond quickly so I opened task manager and saw that disk usage is always at 100%. Due to this, even shutting down takes a long time and seldom I force it to shut down because it is very unresponsive. I observed the laptop for a few days and found out that windows update was slowing it. I disabled the Windows Update Service, and when I rebooted it, the disk usage is at normal levels. So my question is, how can I update my laptop? and is there any way to use Windows Update without the laptop lagging? Hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

Answer:Very high physical memory usage, no high usage programs running

Post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab when the problem occurs.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Answer:dllhost.exe, multiple explorer.exe's, high CPU usage, and memory usage

I don't know what you need me to post. Hopefully this might provide some insight.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Question: High Disk Usage

I am trying to figure out the cause of my extremely high disk usage. No matter what I do, the usage is anywhere from 80%-100%.

I've stopped and disabled the Windows Search, along with Superfetch.

I've also tried disabling "Show me tips about Windows" and it hasn't worked either
Here is how Task Manager currently looks

Any ideas on how to get the usage back to a reasonable %? I've tried everything I could find and nothing will work. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
hArLtRoN

Answer:High Disk Usage

Well...I ran a Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan(s). Malwarebytes found a couple pretty severe things and Defender didn't find anything; both ran full scans.

Also ran a diskcheck and it completed successfully. As of right now I am not having the 100% disk usage constantly. Windows Search and Superfetch are both still disabled, along with the notification mentioned in my first post.

What's happening guys,
I've decided to finally let the experts assist me since I've been really yanking my nerves and wasting time on maybe bad thought solutions.
Okay so the issue is I'm getting a constant high disk usage without even having anything running
here's a screenshot of my problem

And well, so far I've tried the ''deactivate 'windows search' and 'superfetch''' and it hasn't really done the trick
Also I resetted my pc yesterday, as of now I'm running a clean install of Windows 10.
Did the ''turn off notifications from Windows''
and really nothing, I've also defrag quite some times with Defraggler and DiskDefrag and nothing.

Could you guys lend me a hand? I really need this laptop for school.
Thanks for reading
*EDIT* It's a problem since my system is acting very unresponsive and some times freeze of applications occur

Answer:Very high disk usage

Ok, so guys
I'm going to go buy a new hard drive, maybe even a SSD
do you think I'm doing a good thing?
Over some tests/scans by hard drive health status I got a similar factor each, which is that my hard drive has ''bad sectors'' and also has a bad health, here's a screenshot:
also I'm already downloading Windows 10 and creating a USB installation stick

I have
-Changed fetch in regedit
-defragged drive
-Dedicated Ram to custom setting on advance power options
-Turned off multiple windows services
-did a system file check

Question: High Disk Usage

Hi so system and compressed memory uses 100% disk space when i start my computer and continues to do so for 10 minutes at least and it will also do this randomly when i'm gaming or just on the internet. I've checked all of my drives to see if they were updated (I just clicked search online for newest update idk if that's the best way to do it) and i ran a virus scan in safe mode and did some other things like disable prefetch and windows search and i even disabled "show me tips for windows 10" So please help me out if any of you can!

Answer:High Disk Usage

Not to try and scare you richiethomas1234, but if your pc is infected with a rootkit (aka bootkit) even scanning it in safe mode is not always going to work.
try checking your computer using a antivirus that will scan your pc after POST, but before your Operating System loads. The problem you are describing can be the result of your pc infected by a worm.

Question: High Disk Usage

Hi all, I'm struggling with finding things to fix my high disk usage. I've spent many months searching the internet and doing all the listed suggestions like disabling SuperFetch, Windows Defender, Updating drivers, ect. and still I'm stuck with a high disk usage. Here's a screen shot I took immediately following a restart and opening up to a new Firefox window.

I have noticed Service Host: Local System takes up quite a bit of disk usage and that if I close it and let it open back up all by itself then it immediately makes my disk usage drop into a much more manageable 40-60% usage range. But eventually after a while it maxes out again and I have to close it out again. It's an annoying step just to be able to use my computer.

Also, I have noticed that after working with my mom's computer today, that her disk usage when no programs are running is only like 5%. Makes me wonder why my computer can have no programs running but my disk usage never drops below 30% and sits in the 40-60% range with spikes up over 75%.

I honestly don't know enough about computers to do much more than I already have without causing major issues. BTW, just a couple weeks ago I had to do a Windows reinstall, not a complete reinstall, just the basic reinstall they allow you to do on Windows 10 where you still keep all your personal files. Ever since that a lot of times when I try to open a process like Run or Task Manager I'll get an error message that it can't open and then I do it again and it wil... Read more

Question: High Disk Usage

For the past few days my disk usage randomly goes up to 99-100%. It's noisy and slows everything down and is very annoying. There do not appear to be any processes taking up the disk space and I can't figure out what is causing it. Then sometimes it goes back down to normal and everything is fine. I have run malware scans and that didn't help. Here is what I have:

Windows 10 Home
3.80 gigahertz AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core
8 GB memory
Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
I use Comodo Internet Security

What else do I need to check when this happens to figure out the cause?

Answer:High Disk Usage

Don't you mean CPU usage?
Open Task Manager, check Show processes from all users, and check what process is hogging the CPU.

Hi,

I've recently bought a new Lenovo Laptop, and it arrived today.

Something I'm not very fond of is extreme spikes in disk usage, and would like to see if I can solve this without sending it back for repair

I captured screenshots of what I might find useful, if you need more just tell :)

Answer:High disk usage on new PC

When a new Windows 8 system is first booted the OS will spend a lot of time downloading updates, syncs with other devices and OneDrive, updating tile apps and performing things like scheduled anti-virus definition downloads and scans, plus disk defragmentation/optimization. All this should calm down after a time.

Hi, sorry about my english first.
I bought new lenovo ideapad Z400 touch 2 month ago with win8.
last week i upgraded to win 8.1 and recover back to win 8 , since then i have some problems.
When I have the Task Manager open, I notice the disk usage climbing to 50, 75, 100 also the CPU , even though there's scarcely any disk activity going on, the laptop's fan is working harder and very noisy , my processor's speed and heat are jumping high without any progrems on.
I tried almost anything, cheacked for viruses, disabled unnecessary startup progrems, clean boot, but it still the same.
please help.

Answer:High disk usage and cpu

Sometimes TrustedInstaller/Windows Modules Installer Worker goes on a cleanup/compression binge, where you'll notice TIWorker.exe working the CPU in the background. Personally I'd just let it run for a few hours (maybe whilst you're doing something else), where it should complete doing what it's doing and the CPU will return to normal.

If you're feeling paranoid, maybe go to the 'Details' tab and check the properties for the process to make sure it is actually the legitimate Windows Process that's running and not a fake one using the same name.

Question: High Disk Usage

Lately I have noticed a high disk usage with the computer using task manager. Things that cause this spike is conducting normal operations just as opening an application or the web-browser.

I do not recall seeing any disk usage on task manager for the past few weeks except yesterday (perhaps I did but I do not remember). It appears to me as if those application are using the HDD as RAM even though there is space on the 8GB memory. So I am not entirely sure.

I would like to know if it is normal for applications such as Chrome to be using the disk space? And if so, would you have any idea as to what may be causing high disk usage?

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:High disk use reduces CPU usage

That's normal in my opinion. Spinning platters are slow at accessing multiple reads and writes concurrently. This is where SSD's greatest advantage is truly demonstrated. It happens to my laptop too like when I am decompressing very large .rar, .iso .arc etc. files, My whole system slows down to a crawl. I mean opening a new tab in a browser takes more than 3 seconds instead of being instantaneos. The reason you feel that the CPU is not working well is because the hard disk does not have enough data to feed the CPU. In other words. the hard drive is bottlenecking your CPU and RAM.

Hi guys,

I have been having issues with my computer recently. The disk usage has been jumping up to 100% frequently, and the memory usage is up in the 80's. CPU usage is on the high side too. I don't have much running, I wonder if there is something running in the background that could be the cause? It is not all the time, but intermittently.

Also, maybe a windows 10 issue, but when i try to shut down about 50% of the time it just starts up again?

I previously posted this in the malware section and my computer was found to be clean

Thanks in advance for any help,

I have windows 10 on a new PC with 0 hdd issues, but my PC starts up and the disk usage stays over 100% for a very long time. Answer:Need Help With High Disk Usage! Windows 8

In DOS, nothing ran in the background when you were running aprogram.

Then Windows came along, and we had something new..... SERVICES.

I first discovered them in Windows XP. And I realized almost immediately that many of those SERVICES were redundant. (not required for the average user)

So I set about disabling all the services that I didn't need running all the time. Gee! My PC speeded up considerably!

I found a listing on the "Black Viper" website, of every SERVICE and which ones can be safely disabled for the average user PC.
I promptly disabled 24 services for Windows XP. I put that in a batch file, so I could repeat it, in just a few seconds.

That was continued to Windows 7 and now to Windows 8.

Most of what works well for Windows 7, will also work for Windows 8 or even 8.1.
They are not all that different. The registries are almost identical.

I'm still using my Windows 7 tweaks for Windows 8 and it works, just fine. Go figure!
Windows 7 and Windows 8 are more alike than MS wants you to know. (Big Secret)

Cheers Mates!

Hey Guys, this is my first post here.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.

How long since you upgraded? There is a lot of indexing and optimization that goes on after upgrade. Will be a lot of background activity for awhile.

And welcome!

Hi,

As I'm typing this with no other apps running and a clean install of Windows 10 performed an hour ago I have 97% disk usage. wsappx is showing "1.8mb/s" in the task manager followed by a bunch of normal objects that show like 0mb/s or .1mb/s...hovering at 94% right now.

I've battled this before with limited success doing everything mentioned before like disabling BITS, Defender, fetch, prefetch, etc...

This is a 6month old ACER E5-575-33bm and about two days ago the original hard drive failed. It's not completely busted but I was stuck in an automatic repair loop and I tried to remedy it with all the suggestions out there. I couldn't even go into safe mode. Nor could I do a repair or fresh install on it using a WIN10 usb boot disk.

My question is. Is this just windows 10 and I have to live with it? (down to 1% disk usage at the moment after about 3 minutes). I'm concerned that the last hard drive died because of this problem of intermittent spiking. Does anyone know if this is a hardware problem? Did I just get a bad mobo? Is it my ram? Should I bring it into Acer service? Will they just tell me it's normal and tell me to carry on?

Answer:Is this disk usage too high for windows 10?

Hi, in an idle state you should expect 0 disk usage. (Assuming no internet activity e.g. background downloads.

I understand you've replaced the drive and clean installed Win 10 on a newish PC- presumably the Creator's build?

You should not try to fix this by disabling Windows services.

Otherwise it's impossible to comment without information.

I believe you are in a clean boot state.

Please post a screenshot of your task manager, organising any columns of interest high to low by clicking on the relevant column tab. Repeat for different columns if useful.

Please also complete your system specs (see mine for comparison), including details of your disk(s).

I agree drive failure that early is unexpected.

Please also boot to Safe Mode, and again post a screenshot of your task manager.

Hey guys, This is the second new Aspire F 15 laptop I've picked up. I replaced my previous one with a new one because of a high disk usage error. I couldn't fix it despite spending countless hours trying every fix I could find online. So I'm quite frustrated now, after picking up a new model and seeing the same problem. The disk usage typically hovers around 95% in task manager when nothing is running, and when I open any program it shoots to 99% - 100%. Sometimes it goes below 90%, but it's always shortlived. The services in task manager that usually hog all the disk usage are:Service Host: Local SystemwsappxMcAfee Scanner service I don't think this should be happening with a brand new laptop, especially with the second model. Can someone please explain what might be causing this or how to change it? Or if I should just return it and get a different laptop. The F 15 has everything I need for my price range, and I'd rather not have to find another laptop. Again, I've tried every solution online that I could find, and it nothing helped. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi,Try uninstalling or disabling the trial version of McAffe, you will be protected immediately by Windows Defender, if you want a third party AV program, you can find many alternatives online.

A few weeks ago my computer started shutting down every few minutes due to high CPU disk usage. I troubleshot and it seemed to be an issue with Windows 10 or Chrome. I uninstalled a bunch of items and changed settings and the problem seems to have gone away now. Now, however, my computer is getting really hot and the fan doesn't stop. I don't think it's because of dust.  Any suggestions? Also I'd appreciate help backing everything up and restoring factory settings and possibly an older version of word if that's recommended.  Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Over the past couple of weeks I have been getting high disk usage on my computer, causing it to run extremely slowly.
Is there any way to fix this issue?
Just after I took the attached screenshot, my System went down to around 6MB/s and the "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)" jumped to around 16MB/s
Looking in resource monitor the main things causing the high read speed are: 'rundll32.exe' and 'ccsvchst.exe' and one just called 'System'
If you require any more information just ask because this issue is getting very annoying while playing games ect...

Thanks a bunch
Jack

Answer:Very high disk usage [Windows 8 Pro 64-bit]

I believe the ccsvchst.exe is a Norton executable, and, as Norton is know to be heavy on system resources, that may be the issue. Now, as to how, why, and what Norton is doing, I have no idea but you might want to try turning Norton off and see if that fixes your resource hogging. Just be careful what you are doing without the AV protection during this test phase. Good luck.

I've recently built a computer for a friend a few months back. They did encounter some high CPU temperatures that warranted getting a new CPU cooler which has fixed the temperature problems. Lately she's had problems with freezing, which she notes was the same time the disk usage skyrocketed. It's more often when she is gaming. The PC would freeze, and sometimes recover. Other times required a forced restart. She has a fresh install of Windows 10. I'm not sure where the problem lies. I also suspect that her hardware may have been damaged from the overheating issue, but I'm not qualified to make that kind of judgement.

Well I don't know when this really happens but this 2 process make the pc stop working and once I look at the HDD light it looks like HDD is working none stop
when I try to press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" the screen takes long time to show up if even it shows up
once I managed to get starting the shut down process it takes forever to shut down, and most time I have to hold the power button to turn off the pc and the odd thing is that if the shut down is really slow and the shut down process is completes then pc will boot up really slow
how do I know this because I have turned off the boot GUI so I can see the list of the drivers while loading, normal times (when pc didn't friezed/slowed down) or the times when I hold the power button to turn off then on the boot up list of drivers will load very fast as you can't see the lines but if I let the pc shut down  normally (while everything slowed down) once I try to boot up it runs really slow each line takes like really slow then I have to run the pc in repair mod then in the scan wont show any problem but once the scan is done it will boot fast, my problem is that I don't get any error code or some thing
please help me fix my pc

High Disk Usage by Host Processes?. All of this makes my PC run very slow and causes freezing and other problems. Have run System Mechanic and resolved some issues but the problem is still there.

How to I correct for all of this? Thank you, eddie460

Hello,

I've had this problem for a while.

After I stop using my computer, at the 4th minute mark of being idle something sets off. I always notice it when I work next to it because the vents rev up, it becomes loud, which means more wear and tear, etc.

So first things first, open up the task manager and process explorer to see what's going on. However, as soon as I move my mouse (or give any input really) everything calms back down to 0% or 1% and I can't really see what's driving it. I still managed to snap this screenshot though.

As you can see from it, BitDefender seems to be the culprit. But I don't understand why because even when I turn idle scan and auto-update off, the problem is still here. So it might not be BitDefender after all.

I've also thought of Windows indexing and defragmenting services which were set to run at idle. Nothing is solved after switching both to off.

I'd like to know how can I find out what process exactly is causing the CPU to rise, that is, high disk usage.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:High idle disk and cpu usage

Just sounds like normal windows maintenance to me, mine starts off automatically after being idle for a few mns, they should settle down after a while, but as soon as you use the machine windows pauses the process

Event viewer might also give an idea of what it is doing

A way to see what process is doing it
Disable screen saver if it comes on after a few minutes
open up task manager on the process tab sorted by cpu

sit and watch it for 4 mins and you should see which process is running

I recently installed Windows 8.1 on my Inspiron 7520 and I noticed that during the startup the disk usage is around 98/99% of my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 120gb.
I saw a lot of posts where the users complain that, during this high usage of the disk, apps don't open, the system freezes around 5 minutes and after that, there are random high usages, even on idle. But in my case this high usage lasts only few seconds (around 30s), I can open some apps with no problems and never happens again on idle, only if I restart Explorer.exe. If I restart it, it happens all again.

My question is : Is it normal? The high usage only on startup? My only worry is mess up with my SSD due this usage.

UPDATE: On Performance Monitor, the process which writes a lot is System. I disabled every 3rd party app on startup.
Thanks a lot!

Answer:High Disk usage (98/99%) ONLY on startup

Is it normal? The answer is no! Have you looked at your event viewer to see what warnings, errors or critical errors you are getting? That might provide you some insight of problems. Also, have you checked Action Center and used troubleshooters available there? Just some suggestions that might help identify. Hope you get it solved....

I purchased a Surface Pro 4 back in Janaury and noted that the OS was taking up less than 16GB of hard drive space.
Last week I had to do a reset and ended up having to reinstall the OS from a USB (ran into all kinds of issues, but got there in the end....), but now the OS is taking up over 25GB of hard drive space.
Are there any files I can safely delete that may be chewing up the extra 8-10GB of space?
I've looked at the windows.old, but it's less than 600KB.
Have also ran the disk clean up tool after reinstalling Windows, but it only found 300MB of stuff it could get rid of.
Can anyone suggest any files I can safely get rid of in the Windows file?

Answer:Disk space usage seems high

Hey there. When I install new builds etc. I use cleanmgr (a.k.a. Disk Cleanup). Type it in the search bar on the bottom of your desktop. It would be good to run that because it looks for unnecessary files in your computer and you can delete them that way.

Hi,
I upgraded to Windows 8 a few months ago with a clean install. Around a month ago, my computer started to freeze up and experience huge slow-downs. Trying to open the Task Manager can take minutes of waiting. When it does open, the physical drive/disk usage (not CPU) for the "System" is 99% or 100%. The "details" tab again shows a process labeled "system" which leads to ntoskrnl.exe in the System32 folder.

I was worried about malware being the problem, but posted in the malware forum here--everything checked out okay.

Any ideas why this program, which from Google sounds like the trigger of the BSOD, might be running at such a high disk usage? Or is something else the problem? Thanks for any help with this!

Didn't see it here at MG. If your PC is running slowly, it might take a while for the scan to run, but it will show you how your disk usage is allocated very clearly...

I just upgraded to TH2 from Win 10 Pro. I noticed that my disk usage is near 99% for the past 20 mins. It keeps fluctuatiing between 10 to 99. Normally my disk usage stays at 0. May be this might be Windows settling in after the upgrade? There was high disk usage the first time around when i upgraded from Win7.

Answer:High disk usage after upgrade to TH2.

Leave it a few hours and it should calm down.. TH2 is an upgrade to the OS not just a patch (that is why you get the Wondows.old etc) so it is doing all the same things as it did after you upgraded from 7.

I recently updated my Lenovo G50-30 to windows 10. Everything seemed to be going alright for a few hours until I noticed that the Memory usage was at 60%. Previously, with Win 8, this didn't seemed to be happening. Many people said that the problem was old drivers; so I have updated all my drivers to the ones that were available, but I believe Lenovo is too ******* to actually release all the latest drivers and therfore, am missing a few. I hope someone can explain to me if I am doing something wrong or if lenovo is just too lazy to release newer drivers. If there are any solutions, please do tell me.

I'm running Win XP, and I was downloading some software over the last few days for popup blockers, and I downloaded Yahoo Blocker, Google Blocker, and then ran AdAware 6 [which I've since removed to get Ad Aware SE].

Anyway, I'm having very high CPU usage, and High Memory Usage in the Windows Task Manager. I keep closing dostask.exe because it keeps using nearly 90-100% of the CPU, and it keeps maxing out my memory which is 1/2 Gig.

When I start the machine, the system runs fine, but then it begins to climb. I close it, and it climbs again, and then repeat.

I also did a search for dostask.exe and found this file: DOSTASK.EXE-25D34F68.pf located in the F:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Any help is appreciated.

Important Note: F:\ is my main drive.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

Answer:High CPU Usage & High Memory Usage From dostask.exe

You need to find out what is starting that dostask.exe and either remove it (if it's not something you use) or change the settings (if it's something you use). Read the stickied thread for more info.

Have been experiencing poor performance on my laptop, whenever that happens Task manager shows 95-100% disk usage:
1. Most of the times it's either System with 30-80% of usage or AntiMalware protection with 35-50%
2. Sometimes superfetch with 40-55%
3. Just recently, background agent for some UWP uses up to 70% (for short period -few seconds-)
Edge used to do this, turns out it's AdBlocker uninstalled, don't know what to do here :\

On my computer, ntoskrnl.exe process is consuming high Disk & CPU usage. It spikes up to about 40% sometimes when downloading anything. But usually, spikes to around 7% will just general usage of the system. It's not supposed to use that much and I wouldn't mind it using that much if it didn't lag the whole pc even at 7%. I've tried turning off superfetch & runtime broker.
I have also changed the memory managment thing in the registry and ran both System File Checker and DISM. Also used the refresh OS option which is supposed to pretty much be like a new install but that didn't work either.
P.S. Used Driver Booster 4 to make sure all my drivers were up to date. And have disabled my firewall while trying to downloading things. This also only started after installing the creators update before I did the refresh OS.

I have a 2 year old Satellite C50-B that i have had to reinstall windows 8.1 twice in the last month.

What happens is that my Disk usage will go to 100% despite only showing the highest usage (system) as 0.1 mb/s

When this first happened, i restarted my laptop only for it to not boot past the inovation screen. The only way to make it do something else was to use the recovery USB that came with it. I wiped my HDD then reinstalled windows and it was fine for about a week, then it happened again.

Each time i do it i make sure that my drivers are up to date so i doubt it would be a driver issue. At first i thought my hard drive was failing, but if that was the case, surely i would have the same problem even after reinstalling.

I doubt it is a program i downloaded since the only thing i have on my laptop since it started is Firefox (and Steam before the last reset).

Now i am not sure if this is what causes it but i noticed it only really happens after it has been on for 7+ hours. However i never had a problem before a month ago.

Now i don't mind doing a reinstall every so often but 5 times in one month is getting to much (esspecially where it takes 1.5 hours to format the HDD, 30 mins to install windows, then however long it takes to install 200+ updates).

I have windows update set to never check (so it isn't that), i have not got antivirus and have real time protection on Defender turned off (so it is not that doing a scan) and i pretty much remove the bloatware after each... Read more

Hi, I just installed win 10 last day, and it was going fine, no conflicts on the drivers whatsoever. But after a day, when I booted up, it seems to have slowed down to a point that everything does not respond to my inputs, though it does after a couple of minutes, i check the task manager and it shows that the disk usage is high, the r/w speed show high utilization about 10-40mbps and the active time is 100%, anyone of you experienced this? I have read some thread and suggested to turn off superfetch and prefetch but that didn't do a thing to me. Btw, I installed it over win 8.1 using a bootable usb.

Answer:problems with ccsvchst.exe and High disk usage

"ccsvchost.exe" indicates a Symantec/Norton anti-virus program.

In Task Manger, there should only be two instances of ccsvchost.exe, one for SYSTEM and one for "username".

Visit the forum of Norton users at Norton Community - Norton Community . There could be many causes, as evidenced by the many threads posted there about it. A high probability is the Norton program is scanning the large drive. Or if the Optimizer is not turned off, then it will run the defragmentation module.

Hello,

From sometime in October, after an update, there have been periods, sometimes intermittent, sometime persisting for a long time, when Disk usage spikes up to 100%, and makes a lot of things unusable.

I did some researching, and disabled a bunch of stuff, like Windows notifications, Windows search, background intelligent transfer and superfetch, even OneDrive, but even on Windows 10 version 1511, Disk usage spikes to 100%, the offending application / service being anything from System to memory compression to 3rd party applications...

This is becoming extremely irritating, and my video playback or something else stutters a lot when disk usage jumps up, often at chronic levels, then backs down, or stays at that usage for some time.

Could anyone suggest a remedy for this? I have run out of ideas, barring a system reset...it used to work fine before an update in mid - October.

Thanks a lot.

Answer:Extremely high intermittent disk usage

I would try another disk. This could very well be a hardware problem.

I bought a Gateway laptop with W8 with 4g  of ram and a 500 g hard drive. It has an I3 processor. I was looking at the processes that were running. There is a column that has disk usage. It showed I had 100% usage. How can the computer be using 100% of a 500 g hard drive?

Answer:High disk usage in task manager

The 100% is a measure of your RAM being used.

Hi all,
We have a custom built PC running Windows 10 and it was operating flawlessly up until about five days ago. We changed nothing, downloaded only one piece of official software (from the Logitech website to support a new webcam), but the system suddenly started running slowly. The disk usage and/or CPU will randomly spike, even if we're only running one or two programs. Start running four or five and the performance lags significantly. We've run several anti-malware and system scans, have updated everything, tried a couple of fixes we found online (such as disabling Windows Search and superfetch), but nothing has worked so far. If anyone has any suggestions, we would greatly appreciate it!

Answer:High Disk Usage during Startup, slows down my pc

Do you have an antivirus?

I have a nice gaming pc that I built, all of my specs are pretty substantial and I should certainly not be running 100% disk with only task manager open, I can barely run a lot of my games, and I do not remember having this issue when I first built my PC. It is very frustrating, it feels like I've done everything to try and fix it from turning off processes, detecting maleware, and troubleshooting in the registry, nothing seems to work. PLEASE help

Answer:Windows 8 laptop High Disk Usage

You start task manager, select the performance tab, open resource monitor, select disk tab then open a cmd.exe as a admin (windows key+x+a)now you stop various suspected services and watch how the system responds in resouce monitor.for example:net.exe stop superfetch (hit enter and see if your disk usage goes down after a min or two)net.exe stop "Windows search".

Hello denizens of Bleeping Computer,
A bit of a long yarn here. Please bear with me.
I'm having some difficulty with my HP Envy M6 laptop. Things were fine until an automatic update ran two days ago. I'd been delaying the update to 8.1, but Windows updated itself while I was momentarily away from the computer.
I came back to find the update had finished, but there were problems. The screen was blinking with my blue desktop theme color, and I was unable to even access my desktop. Finally, I was able to go back and choose the "restore" option.
However, for some reason, there were no restore points listed before the update. Rats! So I went back and chose to "refresh" my computer which seemed to work. Only one catch: the system is running loudly continually, lagging quite a bit, and there's a marked increase in CPU and disk usage in Task Manager. I have no idea what happened.
I've since updated Windows to 8.1 and run every update I could find, still to no avail. I've tried running MalWareBytes, disabled "Windows Search" and "Super Fetch" processes (which are common culprits). Curiously, CCleaner found quite a few .dll errors that keep popping up even when I choose to "fix" them. But it looks like these issues are beyond my novice understanding of Windows.
Here's a screenshot of Task Manager from a moment ago...
Note: The usage had dipped low when I took that screenshot. It's usually much higher. Oftentimes the disk usage is at 100%. It seems like the biggest hogs of disk us... Read more

Answer:How to solve disk usage is to high problem?

What program/process/app is causing that? You can check by opening Task Manager > More details (if it isn't already showing more details) > Click or tap on either CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network. This will put everything in order from highest usage to lowest in the respective category...

Hi

Quite often get message 'High CPU Usage 100%' or 'High Disk Usage' using IE9 or various other apps. Computer seems to run ok although slow not very often. Scanned with Norton Internet Security 2011 & ok. Malware problem?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Answer:Satellite C650D - High CPU and disk usage

Hi Mooky,

What program is telling you that you have high CPU and HDD usage? I never heard about such messages so it would be interesting to know what program it is.

What operating system you are using?

Please have a look in task manager what process causes the high usage.

I noticed the culprits are "Skypehost.exe" (Skype 32-bit process) and "system and compressed memory". Every time I end the Skype process, it just comes back. Ending Superfetch as recommended online seemed to help, but there must be a true fix. Any help please? Thanks!

I have been using my desktop for a while now, and I notice that even when the memory, CPU are active or inactive but not at a high usage level, a single task (such as right clicking on a tray icon) or opening a program will stall the hard drive, as disk access shoots up to 100% or near it.

I have posted a screenshot of my hard disk activity as monitored by the system utility 'Resource Monitor': All I did was open up windows live messenger, and then right click some system tray icons a couple of times, and then the resulting spikes happened.

Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/hiYWM.png

When I first boot up my computer from a shutdown or sleep state, logging into an inactive account also hogs the disk access as everything slows down a lot for the first 30-60 seconds, as well.

I just ran the system discovery/specification utility, the results are below:

Greetings to anybody is reading.
First of all, I apologize for my poor English.
The topic I'd like to begin is about a problem that, I've red in the Web, a lot of users have met in Windows 8: a high disk usage which make the pc more and more slow. And it's happen without any program is running. Just the services and something else of Windows itself.
Somebody says to unable some services like Superfetch and Windows Search.
Somebody else says to increase the virtual memory.
Somebody else says to unable some scheduling task, as defrag the HDD.
I'd like to know your opinion, because I think you are members of a very serious website.

Best regards to everybody.

Answer:High disk usage (95 up to 100%): limit of Windows 8?

Can you screenshot the task manager showing the processes running so I can see this high disk usage? Or even some logs to support timeouts etc.

I am running XP+SP2, Pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1gb ram and have three hard drives.Last night I was logged onto the internet through Tesco BB, accessing emails in Outlook Express, and all of a sudden it sounded as if something was trying to access the floppy drive for about 3 or 4 seconds followed by intense hard drive activity. It wasn?t possible to tell which hard drive it was but it kept doing it continually and I checked Windows Task Manager and saw that the CPU usage was virtually 100% all the time.I restarted the computer and it worked perfectly with the CPU usage between 0 and 4% even when connected to the internet. I can find no problems and no evidence of any attacks from an outside source. Is something on the way out or is it just one of those funny computer moments?

Answer:Very high CPU Usage with intense disk activity

Have you installed any kind of new Software recently?Sometimes if you have Virus checkers, spyware detectors or Backup utilies like Goback etc they may do an automatic background scans.

I recently ran into the windows 10 ntoskrnl.exe problem where it uses 100% of my disk for an extended period of time. Now I am getting the click of somewhat death. The hard drive is still readable but the clicking only started after the exe was using all my disk. Could the extended 100% usage be what has caused it to start clicking?

Answer:Can high disk usage cause the click of death?

Most disk drives are mechanical and lots of usage will wear the drive out quicker
so it may have contributed
how old is the drive ?

I recently upgraded to windows 10 and ever since then, when using games, I get absurd amounts of lag. In my situation the game is Call of Duty : Advanced Warfare. I will be playing lag free and then (usually when I get in a enemy encounter. Or as soon as the bullets go flying) I will get an insane amount of lag. I will go from 90FPS to 6FPS in a matter of seconds and it will persist until the fight is over(usually rendering me the looser of the fight). While the game was running full force, I checked the task manager to see what the heck was the cause of this lag. Apparently, it was displaying 100% disk usage, however not from CoD, it was from a system task named "System". This task was using approximately 2 gigabytes of memory and 9Mb/s of my disk (which is obliviously not the max my disk can handle.) My hard drive is capable of way more than 9Mb/s But according to task manager that "System" task alone was using 80% or so of disk, and the overall disk usage was at 100%. I right clicked on "System" and clicked properties to find the exact culprit. The application was "ntoskrnl.exe" located inside of System32. I can only think of one "Disk related change" that I made prior to all the lag issues. That would be defragging. I defragged the disk the day before just for the heck of it and after that is when I noticed the lag. I don't see how this could be the culprit but I wanted to mention it in case it was of any importance t... Read more
