Windows 10 upgrade on Z400 Touch?

Question: Windows 10 upgrade on Z400 Touch?

I'm VERY disappointed to find that my Z400 Touch is not supported for the Windows 10 upgrade!
Looking for info to see if it's worth trying to work around the issues:
Specifically which hardware components are incompatible with Win 10?
Has anyone tried the upgrade dispite the potential issues?
If so, what were resulting problems/issues and fixes for them?
Many thanks for any possible assistance!

Preferred Solution: Windows 10 upgrade on Z400 Touch?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This model is not in the compatibility list: https://support.lenovo.com/br/pt/documents/ht103535.My question is if it is definitive or it would be compatible any time in the future. Does Lenovo have plans to get this model compatible with the OS?I tried to upgrade a couple of months ago and had a lot of problems. I had to go back to 8.1.

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade for Z400 Touch

My guess is that if it isn't on the list now, it won't be later. That doesn't mean it won't work. What kinds of problems did you have?

I am using the ideapad z400 touch and have been upgraded to windows 10. "Intel graphics card => I reinstalled the windows 8.1 driver from lenovo site", and my brightness problem is solved. I am facing the problem with the intel HD graphics 4000 display driver that I install from lenovo site. The driver seems like not fully compatible with windows 10. My screen will turn off after 5 minutes and when I move the mouse to wake it up I face the problem, the screen will freeze for a while and start to wake up and showed me the message "intel display driver.....has stopped responding and has recovered" This happens everytime after my screen turn off. Besides, my pc can't go to sleep mode. When I select sleep for my pc, the screen went black and it takes a long time to sleep but actually it is not, then it will shut down on its own. I have to press the power button to turn it on again. I think this problem is also related to the display driver. I have no problem with this display driver on windows 8.1. Will Lenovo come out the new driver that compatible with windows 10 from Lenovo site? The latest operating system they provide the drivers is untill windows 8.1. If they do not support the windows 10 driver I will roll back to windows 8.1 with no choice but I sincerely hope that I can keep using windows 10 on my pc I like it. Microsoft gives us one month time to roll back to windows 8.1. I don't know can I upgrade to windows 10 again if I fou... Read more

Although you might have a processor that can handle 32 Gb you can only install 16 Gb since the modules available in the market are 8 Gb only.

Hi there I'm currently using a Lenovo laptop which is Z400 Touch. I was thinking to upgrade my laptop if it is possible. However the specs that i'm using is okay for now but i was thinking. Whether is it possible to upgrade the Intel Processor I'm currently using Pentium  (Upgrading to the latest i5 or i7 gen) and the RAM for my laptopSo are there any parts that i can buy from Lenovo or other computer shop and upgrade it?

Answer:Can I upgrade Intel Processor (from Pentium to i7 4th gen or earlier) and RAM? on Z400 Touch

From what I found so far YES, you can upgrade your CPU and definitely you can upgrade RAM. To make sure please run CPU-Z and post a screenshot from first tab and 'memory' tab.when it comes to CPU you should have a selection of Ivy Bridge CPU, but IMO you should use 3632qm.

Hello, I just bought a Lenovo ideapad Z400 Touch. I bought a SSD HD. Before installing, I have a doubt. The notebook comes with no DVD of Windows 8 and does not come with the serial activation of Windows 8. After installing the SSD, can I use any media of Windows 8 to install it? And activation? Be automatic? Or should I register on any area of the lenovo site to access the installation media and serial? Actually I do not have installation media. The lenovo provides me to reinstall? Can I download somewhere on the site? I will thank you immensely for the help. PS: I apologize if there are errors in English because I'm Brazilian and do not speak English, the translation was done by google translator.

Don't try to resize the partitions due to a possibility of disabling the OKR program. What is the size of your ssd? Do you intend to place the os on it?

Hello, this is my situationI have bought my Lenovo Z400 Touch 59366600 in June last year, and it came with a non-functional webcam. In September last year, the touchscreen started exhibiting the spurious touch input fault on the left edge, rendering the computer unusable until the touchscreen is disabled in Windows. At some point after this, I have disassembled the computer.I have since moved to Austria, and I wish to solve my laptop's problems and am willing to pay a fee for the service. How can I do so? In addition, I have already bought a new SSD and more RAM to upgrade my computer, and am planning on installing Windows onto the SSD, however the Windows installer will detect the touchscreen and it will be impossible to click any buttons on screen.

So I recently purchased a Z400 touch laptop and it arrives tomorrow. My plan is to swap out the 1TB HDD 5400rpm, with a 128gb Samsung 840 pro SSD. I'm going to put my TB HDD in an external exclosure and turn it into a storage device. My question is what do I need to follow to be able to install Windows 8 on my SSD without needing to purchase a disk from Lenovo? Can I do this with Lenovo's recovery software? Or do I need to do something else. This will be my first time using Windows 8 so I'm very unfamiliar with the software. I've also read some posts about some people cloning windows as well. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Im using the z400 touch notebook but I think I the driver for the touch capabilites were accidentally removed. where can I download the driver?

Answer:Z400 touch touch screen problem

hi alton1995,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Touch driver is native to windows and there is no download for these models.

First can you check if the touch hardware is detected by winodws
Open system properties and see if touch function is detected.

If Yes,
Open Device Manager (Click on View and show hidden devices)  and oped Human interface devices.
Uninstall Everything that starts with HID- hit restart Later if it ask for restart if you were done uninstalling everything yet.
Once all that starts with HID- is uninstalled restart your computer and see if it will work.

As with alot of the newer computers the Z400 Touch has a sealed bottom. How are you suppose to clean the fan if you can't open the unit without voiding the warranty:? Thanks

Answer:How to clean the fan on the Z400 Touch

hi SmilinBob,

In cleaning the fan, you can try to use the Lenovo Energy Management's Fan Dust Extraction - this will make the fan spin in high RPM and will blow the dust away from the vents. You can access this feature by locating the energy management Icon at the system tray and on the energy management app, click on the wrench icon to open the System Settings
 Spoiler (Highlight to read)
You can also use a can of compressed air to blow away the dust from the vents.

If you want to thoroughly clean the fan, you will need to follow disassembly instructions on page 52 of the hardware maintenance manual. Be extra careful though in disassembling the PC as it may contain breakable parts that may void the warranty if they are damaged.

If you're not comfortable opening up the PC and you feel that computer is overheating, I recommend you contact lenovo for service.

Hope this helps.

Hi, i live in Indonesia which z400 currently have a new graphic card GT 740 M. But the distributor said there are still exist the old version using GT 635 M. When my notebook arrive, i couldn't determine which card it is using as there are no hardware explanation at all in the box. Also i couldn't install the graphic card driver (using Win 8 64 Bit), i wonder is it because they give the wrong driver? So, my question is:1. How can i install my graphic driver?2. How to determine which graphic card my z400 using WITHOUT installing the driver first? Maybe the series number can give me a hint which card i am using? Thanks in advance

Answer:i have few problems with my ideapad z400 touch

Hi Urza,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with touchpad and keypad in your Z400 laptop.

Try to update the touchpad driver and check for the issue, also try to boot the system to safe mode and check for the issue. The touchpad driver is a inbox driver i.e inbuilt in the operating system.

For the keypad issue check if the issue persists in command prompt, also tries to reinstall the operating system and check for the issue. Also boot the system to the safe mode and check for the issue. Try to uninstall the keypad adapter and restart the system and check for the issue.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

Hello, I've looked everywhere I can think of and it doesn't look like anyone has the issue I'm having with my Ideapad Z400 Touch.  The system seems to sleep at very random times.  I've turned off the power saver settings.  It seems to happen most often when I am moving the computer.  Anyone have any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks

Help please, My Built-in Microphone isn't working! I was using an earbuds that have a microphone, now it's lost because one day I found my laptop isn't connected to the earbuds, I searched for the earbuds (Headphones) and never found it. Then tried to talk in skype I found the person I'm talking to isn't listening to me. I checked Recording playback settings in sounds I talked and never saw the microphone bar get up, I opened the Set up microphone, and put "Other" option, and talked and it didn't hear me, I checked device manager I found the microphone is enabled. I figured out that the Microphone isn't working anymore! Please Help!

Answer:Lenovo Z400 Touch Microphone not working!

hi AAG_1,

Just to verify, do you only see one microphone device under the Recording Tab?

if yes, can you try one of the following:
1. Under Control Panel (large icon view) > Sound > Recording Tab, right click and enable "Show hidden devices" and ensure that the built-in Microphone is not disabled.
- Link to picture

2. Under the microphone properties, ensure that the Mic is not muted and adjust the Microphone boost (see this guide)

3. Uninstall the Realtek Audio Driver from Control Panel > Programs and reboot (Windows will now install a generic sound driver) then re-install the audio driver from the D:\Drivers\Audio folder or from the Z400 Touch driver page

If all of the steps doesn't work and Skype doesn't report any Microphone device then it's possible that the built-in Mic is faulty and you may need to contact lenovo for service.

Hi all. is there any way to replace/change my Z400 keyboard non-backlit    to   backlit keyboard? it is just awesome when there is backlit keyboard especially in dark places. Thanks

Answer:Z400 non touch backlit keyboard replacement

Welcome to the Forums.

Changing the stock non-backlit keyboard to a backlit one is definitely possible.

To change it:
1. You will need a compatible Z400 backlit keyboard (see page 104 of the hardware maintenance manual)
    - doing a google search, this item should work as it bares part #: 25206029 for the backlit keyboard
    - Link to picture

Note:
Ensure that there's a keyboard power connector on the motherboard as this is required for the backlight feature to work (Link to picture)

2. In removing/replacing the keyboard, you can follow page 33-35 of the hardware maintenance manual or see this video disassembly guide (see FRU Videos) as a reference.

Regards

I bought this Lenovo instead of an Asus, despite a somewhat large price difference, because this computer is supposed to have a backlit keyboard. I got my computer in the mail today and I haven't been able to figure out how to turn the keyboard backlight on. The markings on the keyboard indicate that Fn+Space should turn this feature on. Is there something else that I need to do the first time to turn it on or is this something that I need to take up with Lenovo? Thanks!

Answer:Ideapad Z400 touch - backlit keyboard

hi bkillian,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

If pressing Fn+Space doesn't turn OFF/On the keyboard backlit, does it turn ON when you power ON the computer? (units with backlit keyboards automatically turns ON when the unit is powered up).

If this doesn't work, can you send me a private message with the following info to see if the unit really have the backlit keyboard feature.

Serial Number (i.e. CBxxxxxxxx)
MTM (i.e. 4446-3AU)

Hello All - I just noticed that my multi-touch (not enhanced multi-touch) screen no longer responds to finger touch; just pen. It used to respond to both before i upgraded to Windows 7.I tried the Lenovo diagnostic check for the touch screen, and during the test, it only responded to the pen. What should I do? Is there a certain driver i'm missing or need to uninstall and then re-install?Thanks in advance.

Answer:Post Windows 7 Upgrade - Touch Panel Not Responding to Finger Touch (x200t)

Ok...I think i really screwed something up. As per a Lenovo support tech's advice, i installed the Windows 7 "Enhanced" Multi-touch Driver, even though i do not have the enhanced multi-touch screen, and this is what it says on Lenovo's site about this new driver: "*1: ThinkPad X200 Tablet models with the Multitouch are NOT supported." "*1: ThinkPad X200 Tablet models with the ENHANCED Multitouch ARE supported." So, i go ahead and install it. I notice that finger touch now works, but the pen setting are now all screwed up! The eraser no longer responds when i turn the pen around to erase. It actually INKS with the eraser as well! OneNote no longer automatically starts inking (or erasing) when i bring the pen (or eraser) into range. I have to manually click on the pen icon (or the eraser icon) on the tool bar to use these functionalities! *groan* In the Tablet PC Input Panel: no eraser functionality (it inks instead!!) and even the button on the pen (which previously had the right-click ability) only inks when pressed down! I think i made my situation worse...Please Help! Adam

Answer:How to reset BIOS Lenovo Z400 Ideapad Touch

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

There is no master password, back door or CMOS clearing procedure that will remove your forgotten password.  This is due to the ease in which laptops are stolen.   To resolve the issue you have basically two options.  The first is for the Uncle to try and remember the password he used.  Please keep in mind that passwords are case sensitive and he may have use upper and lower case characters.  The second option is to replace the motherboard.

Hi, I have a Z400 Touch laptop Ideapad - Type 6881. I downloaded Windows 10 a little while ago and put all my stuff on a USB drive before changing. After I did that, I had to reset my entire computer because my husband put a virus on it. I changed it back to factory settings and then updated it to Windows 10 again. When trying to put my stuff from my USB back onto my computer, the USB says that it is unallocated. Is there anyway I can get those files back or are they lost forever? If you could please let me know because I don't want to lose everything I have on it.

Hi lleclair46,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the forum!

When you inset the USB drive and go to 'Computer', is it showing less space than what there is actually on the drive? You can recover the unallocated space, but this may wipe whatever was on the USB drive.

Answer:Can the external monitor's resolution be set different from the Z400 Touch's own display?

HiThis depends on what way you are connecting the laptop. It also depends also on the gpu type. On vga, you will get the same resolution though on hdmi, 1920X1080 is supported. On hdmi also a discrete nvidia or amd gpu would give the resolution most probably but i am not sure intel.gpu.

Hi,I was hoping someone can point me in a direction to solve this problem. I bought a lenovo idea pad z400 touch two summers ago. Recently, it has been acting up. It refuses to power on when shut down but runs perfectly when it is not shutdown. The keyboard lights up and the fan starts up momentarily before it stops. Both the battery and the power button are lit up as well as the keyboard light. But it remains in this state and the bios refuses to boot up. I have not made any additional programming changes to the cpmputer. I have tried everything to fix this problem that was proposed on past posts and the internet like resetting the battery and holding the power button, using the one recovery key, etc. The weird thing is that after a day or two, it usually starts up after you press the power button. Of course, during this time it is completely shut down, since the motherboard gets really hot and I'm afraid it would cause damage to the components. this started within the last few months, and now its been 3 days and it still refuses to boot up even the lenovo screen. Thank You

Any fixes for this, mates? I've seen a similar thread here but the problem wasn't actually solved. I uinstalled the lenovo energy management btw, thinking that, that maybe the cause of the sudden drop and or misreading of the battery percetange. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just to be sure, go to bios and set everything to default. Save and exit. See if you can now see the hdd in the bios.

Hello guys, Does anyone know how to switch from the Integrated Graphics Card to the dedicated one in Lenovo IdeaPad Z400?I am actually confused why the laptop offered integrated and dedicated GPU in the first place. My laptop has 2GB Integrated GPU and 2GB NVidia GeForce dedicated GPU.Is the processor smart enough to select which GPU to use in every application? When I run dxdiag it just reflects the Intel Integrated GPU, but both the Integrated and dedicated GPUs were available in the device manager. Does that mean that I am only using the Integrated GPU and the dedicated one is discarded? Hope you can help me up in this one. Thanks!

Recently I updated windows 10 from windows 8.1. I could adjust the screen brightness when I was running on windows 8.1, but I can't do it any more since I installed a driver update from Intel. So I searched solution and managed to reinstall the older driver again and it worked. However when I tried to run a game the FPS became ridiculously low, much lower than it was on windows 8.1.  I found that the other graphic card, Nvidia Geforce GT635m, which had its latest driver installed,  wasn't working properly, by disabling this graphic card in device manager and I got the same FPS. I tried to install the new version of the driver of Intel HD graphic 4000, the GT635m worked again and the game got back to normal FPS while the screen brightness adjustment didn't work. So, here's my question: how could I keep both screen brightness adjustment and GT635m working properly?

The NVidia keep saying installation cannot continue. sadly, I cant play any graphic games on my Lenovo ideapad Z400 touch notebook and am I gamer Please mates, any valuable solution would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Answer:HELP!!! Lenovo ideapad z400 touch notebook 8GB, 1TB HDD cannot play Graphics Game like Pes 2014.

Hi Quadrescent, welcome to the forum.

Please see this ipbook, where it has all the models listed:

http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ipbook.pdf

Unfortunately, I see that the Z400 Touch does not have the Nvidia graphics installed, so you can't game using that GPU.

The only option available to you, if you really need a stronger GPU for your games, is to return your Z400 Touch, and buy some model that has the Nvidia graphics installed. See the ipbook for which models can do the Nvidia graphics.

Cheers

Hi,  I want to upgrade my existing HP Z400 from current W3503 to something more powerfull. I don't want invest a lot of money and choosing between two options:1) Intel Xeon W3550 + high performance heatsink 463981-0012) Intel Xeon X5650 or X5660I'm not sure about second option, as I understand from this forum high performance heatsink required for CPU >95W, X5650 exectly 95W. My second concern is mother board support of this CPU, I have seen several offers of Z400 with X5650 CPU, but I didn't find any documentation. I didn't find any information about X5650/X5660 CPU in quickspec guide, but I saw several advertisement of Z400 with this CPU on eBay. I will appreciate any help or advice. Evgeny

Evgeny_D, does your Z400 have 4 or 6 memory DIMM connectors on the motherboard?

Question: z400 upgrade help

hi i have an old z400 that was literally given to me for free. I want to upgrade it but I don't know if the parts i want would be compatible. After looking around I found out that only certain psu's, cpu's and gpu's are compatible?here are some quick specs:CPUIntel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz 32 °CBloomfield 45nm TechnologyRAM8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 533MHzMotherboardHewlett-Packard 0B4Ch (CPU0 PROCESSOR) 58 °CGraphics2470W ([email protected])1023MB NVIDIA Quadro 600 (HP) 44 °Cignore the temperatures i directly copied and pasted from speccy. So i'm assuming i still have the stock psu which is 475w.i want to upgrade the graphics card, and the cpu, which means i may have to upgrade the psu as well. maybe even the motherboard ive been looking for decent gpu and cpus and i want to upgrade to an i5 4460 and a 750 ti.i dont know if they are compatible but im sure hoping they are. also ive been looking at this power supply called Delta TDPS-650BB because someone said it could be compatible. idk. should i also get a new fan? 58 °C sounds like a lot for the motherboard.im very new at this so any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Hello,I've bought this ideapad z400 a few months ago and now I wonder if I can upgrade its RAM from default 4GB to dual channel 8GB RAM by myself. If this laptop supports RAM up to 8GB it would be strange if I cannot upgrade the RAM. Can anyone help me to do this, like how to open its back cover? Or I must bring my laptop to a service center? I've also checked its RAM Slots with CPU-Z, there is 1 empty slot available. Spoiler (Highlight to read)Spoiler (Highlight to read) Thank you.

Answer:Ideapad Z400 RAM Upgrade

Here's the info from the specs: memory - DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM × 2 (max 16 GB). Since you are planning to increase the memory just go with 16gb instead of 8 gb.

Hi there, I read a lots of thing about Z400 CPU upgrade, motherboard "revision" (1 and 2), number of ram slot (4 and 6), Boot Block version (01/30/2009 and 11/10/2009) as well as bios version. If i'm right :- there is not such a revision 1 and 2 in HP terms, but it yet translate a différene in hardware specification.- any mother board can support to the latest bios v03.57, so this is not critical when is comes to cpu upgrade.- there is no direct link between the number of ram slot and the Boot Block version of the motherboard.- mother board with the older boot block can only support w35xx CPUs while mother board with the newer boot block can support both w35xx and w36xx CPUs. Ok, if I'm wrong somewhere, please correct me. If not, the question are :- is there an official way provided by HP to update the boot block ? (I belive there are not)- if not, is there a hack to do it ? (can you provide a link or other user experience)  Thank's in advance

Helo!I've bought the Lenovo Z400 (not touchscreen). I decided to upgrade my memory to 16GB and than I bought the memory described bellow from Amazon:Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)But after install it correctly, when I turn on my laptop the screen do not turn on. The LCD remain off. Everything appears to work fine, only the monitor that do not turn on. After downgrade the memory RAM  (to the 8GB that cames with the laptop) the computer works fine.Does this version of memory RAM I bought is not compatible with my model? I've double checked in the manual and I'm sure it is. So anyone has idea of what is going on with my memory upgrade? Thank you.

Answer:Ideapad Z400 RAM Upgrade - LCD not turning on!

This happened to me, try with just one module and make sure it is securely seated then try turning it on. If it works go into the bios and see if it recognises it the module. Save and exit and add the second module.  Screen wont work if the memory isn't in properly.

I have bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Z400 and i have one doubt. Can I upgrade the OneKey IMG with a new Instalation of Windows 8?... Example... Originally it came with Windows 8 SL, and i purchased Windows 8.1 Pro. I wanna add this new license and windows version as default on OneKey Recovery. It this possible?. Thanks you, Regards

Answer:Upgrade OneKey Recovery - Z400

That is possible. But first obtain a copy of the original okr image file then erase them from the hidden folder. This is to insure that if something goes wrong you can always restore from the original. Then make a backup of your new os and select the default location to place the okr image backup files. For restoring you cannot select factory default but use "user speciifed image files" and select the default location. The last time I did this the restore resulted to "automatic repair loop". Maybe this time you will be successful.

Does anyone what aftermarket Motherboards would replace my stock unit (ob4ch) ?

Answer:New mothboard upgrade, Z400 0b4ch MOBO

If you're going to install a new (or used) motherboard make sure you get one with six memory slots, not 4.  The newer version ("Revision 1") motherboards can run the older processors, and the newer ones that can only run on the updated 6-slot motherboard. You can see the two version's HP Parts number if you google "Z400 spare parts".... this is the one you want, with the later part number: System board (motherboard) - Intel Tylersburg-C2 1S/DDR3, 1333 MHz front side bus, six DIMM memory slots, and one IEEE-1394a (Firewire) port586968-001 Key info is that each HP part has two numbers.... the above is one of the two for that exact same motherboard, and you can search for that" on eBay to find the second.  Or, just look and make sure you have a 6-sloter.  It is quite easy to do a motherboard transplant.   There is a new BIOS for that as of 4/16, by the way.  Make sure to install that too. You can read up in this forum about "Z400 boot block date" to see more about the differences.  That revision 1 Z400 is still excellent......
