Z580 doesn't boot from USB, boots to windows 8

Question: Z580 doesn't boot from USB, boots to windows 8

I have a z580 Ideapad that I've had for quite some time(2 - 3 years). I can access the boot menu through the novo button perfectly fine, when I select my USB drive with my OSX bootable image on it, it loads to the lenovo screen, then reloads and loads up windows 8. I have changed the settings in the BIOS to allow the USB to boot first in the boot order, however this doesn't change anything. Here are some images of my BIOS: http://tinyurl.com/okz7v23http://tinyurl.com/okzsxyehttp://tinyurl.com/ngdufau I have heard people with similar problems to mine, have disabled the secure boot setting but it doesn't appear in my BIOS for some reason. Also sometimes, my USB drive doesn't display properly in the BIOS boot order list, or on the boot menu. In the picture above that's what it shows when it doesn't appear in the boot menu, but when it does, its called USB HDD: Generic Flash Disk. Its not a problem with USB 3.0 ports as I have tested all ports on my computer (2x 3.0, 2x 2.0). Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Z580 doesn't boot from USB, boots to windows 8

For Windows 8 to boot from a USB requires some tricks (at times) -

1) Make sure Secure boot if OFF (I know you said its not available, but I have to mention this)
2) Keep Boot mode as Legacy. (I suspect this is what you are missing)
3) Enable Boot from USB.

Save the settings and restart with the USB plugged in.

If it still doesnt boot, try to re-create the bootable USB.

NOTE- Without signing in I am unable to view those linked photos, maybe you could upload them to some other website?

When I switch on my Lenovo Z580, it gets stuck on the Boot Menu/App Menu and after going back and forth, it eventually starts properly, is there a way to have my PC start properly without the boot menu/app menu popping up in the first place. Any help on fixing this will be much appreciated as I fear it is only a matter of time before it stays stuck on the boot menu/app menu pop up screen.

Hello Lenovo community... I have a Z580 ideapad that I bought around a month ago, I can enter the boot menu from the Bios boot button (next to the power button), however when I select a USB drive with an Ubuntu Bootable Image on, it ignores my selection and instead boots into Windows 8. Changing the order in the BIOS to boot from USB first has the same result. If relevant, Ubuntu version is 10.04 and boots fine from USB on my netbook. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Seb

Answer:Z580 ignores USB and boots straight to Win8

Hie , Try with F12 at the start up screen. It would pull a temporary start up screen and then select your pen drive there. If it stil doesnt work you need to verfiy if its really a bootable image.

My machine boots to desktop but nothing will open or work. Start button, volume, firefox, task manager, etc. It does this in safe mode as well. It's not frozen as the screensaver will come on and I can move the mouse, I just can't open anything even with keystrokes. I can't restore or run any diagnostics. What can I do?

Did it always do this?

Where did you get the win 7 dvd from? Was it downloaded or purchased?

Hi everyone

I've been searching google high and low for the past few days, trying to find a solution.

My boss and I bought a used workstation PC.

I have an eGPU setup at home, and have an overpowered GPU for it. So I switched the two (workstation/eGPU).

The new gpu doesn't show post, so I can't enter BIOS, but windows boots fine.
When I click display setting, windows detects a phantom monitor.
I can't boot to safe windows. Or do a clean install if I don't install the old GPU first.

The motherboard doesn't have a display output. And I'm not even sure, that intel HD is even trying to output.

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on with my system?

The relevant parts are

MSI X99S GAMING 7
I7 5820k (not overclocked)
EVGA GTX 770 (that came with the workstation)
Sapphire R9 290 TRI-X OC (from my eGPU)
Windows Pro x64 on SSD (MBR)

Answer:New GPU doesn't show post but boots normally to windows

So, Im not entirely certain what you are telling us here. Please clarify.

From this I am understanding that you have an external graphics card that you are using with your system rather than one that is in the system itself. This card doesnt display any POST or anything, just goes right to Windows.

IF this is the case, then what is happening is this: The eGPU is likely connected by USB 3.0 or some similar high data rate port. These ports are initialized at boot, but because of the way it is set up the card and the eGPU assembly dont get initialized until the drivers for this setup are loaded with Windows. Nothing is controlling the eGPU before this happens which is why you dont see a post happening.

Why is it that you are using an eGPU on a desktop anyway?

Hi,
I am using Compaq Pressario P4 PC with ?Windows XP Home edition? Operating System installed on it. The issue that I am facing is as follows:
- One day, audio was not working with PC. My hard disk drive was close to full, so, I thought of uninstalling couple of unnecessary programs. While doing so, I stopped uninstallation in middle by pressing back button, then, uninstallation process hanged. After that I also tried rollback of soundMAX digital audio driver and again I selected back button and this also hanged. Please note that I had inserted the restore CD in upper CD drive to search the audio driver file. Then, I started the computer through hard reset. After that first it went in restore mode, exited that, Windows Logo came and after that there was just a blinking cursor at top left corner and nothing would happen after that.
- Then I called one PC technician for data recovery from my hard drive. He took my hardrive out of the PC and connected it via USB adaptor to my laptop. The hard drive could be detected and we started data copying from hard drive to laptop. However after every 3-4 minutes, hard drive used to hang and then we had to take out the hard drive cable, again reconnect. This we repeated multiple times to recover the important data from my hard drive.
- After that, hard drive was re-inserted in the PC. Since, after restart PC was not booting up (Windows Logo came and after that there was just a blinking cursor at top left corner ... Read more

Answer:PC doesn't boot in normal mode even after OS reinstallation, though, boots in safe mode

Yes, the hard drive may have become faulty and unreliable and therfore will soon fail completely. For confirmation, test it with the drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS.
The links are here: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

In Safe Mode, no third-party drivers are loaded. In Normal Mode, all those extra drivers being accessed on an already flakey drive is causing it to crash.

Say I have USB drive plugged into my system and then I reboot. That drive, call it F:, should still be there, right? Well, it's not, and I've verified through experiments that I have to unplug and replug the drive.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening. Lenovo T530 laptop running Win 7 64 Pro, fully patched up.

Only thing that comes to mind is you need to set it as first boot device in bios.....Assuming you're trying to do a clean install off of usb flash drive. Also check the usb settings in bios to make sure it can show up as a hard drive. Some pc's might not detect the drive if it's set an odd way in the bios.
Either way if you spam f1 before and during power on and enter bios does the first boot device option see the usb drive as a possibility? Also does it have the latest bios installed?

On a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 Model 2151 Manufactured 5/6/2012

The computer will not boot. It defaults to the automatic Windows Repair menu.

When I first ran Windows Repair, it said that I have a corrupted mfewfpk.sys file, which is associated with McAfee Antivirus software.

Windows startup repair: ?cannot repair this computer automatically?.

I restored the system to the previous restore point and the one before that with no change.

In the command prompt, if sfc/scannow is chosen it says ?There is a system repair pending that requires reboot to complete. If I reboot the computer, I get the same message. I have done this multiple times. It's stuck in a loop.

When I tried to download a Windows 7 ISO file, Microsoft says to contact Lenovo.  Even if I am able to make a bootable Windows 7 USB drive, would I be able to fix the corrupted mfewfpk.sys file?

Hello, I want to install Windows 7 on Lenovo Z580, but when I let the bios boot, they begin to run Windows 8, please help me :'(

Answer:Boot Windows 7 on Z580

HiThe two causes for this could be that either the usb/dvd is not bootable or you first have to select the usb device from f12 boot menu.See this guide on creating bootable diskhttp://www.google.co.in/url?q=http://bitsquad.co.in/2011/05/windows-7-bootable-usb/&sa=U&ei=CHXmUKv3...Or you could use softwares like microsoft windows to usb/dvd tool or novicorp wintoflash

I need to put the Windows OS, that means Windows Boot Manager in BIOS at Boot option 2, but in this case it does not boot.
I need to put at boot position 1 PXE boot and if that fails boot from Boot option 2 (Windows). How could I do that?

Answer:Windows Boot Manager in BIOS boots only at Boot position 1

I hope I haven't misunderstood your question.
All motherboards have a boot priority list.
It will check all sources according to that list until it reaches a source that has a functional operating system or atleast a trace of an operating system boot file.

PXE boot is a network boot, so it will search your network for a server that contains an operating system and will boot that.
Windows should be installed into your hard drive and should usually be your first priority boot device.

However, since you have asked how to change this, simply go to the motherboard BIOS.
The keys vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but a quick google search should help you. Common ones include F10, Del, Fn+F2.

Before the system has a chance to to boot, press the appropriate buttons repeatedly until you get access to the BIOS. Here you can navigate using your arrow keys on th keyboard to something a tab called something like along the lines of 'boot'.

Then navigate down and find boot order. The onscreen instruction will tell you which controls to use to change the order and move items up and down. Once you are satisfied, you may exit with saving changes and after reboot, the order you specified will be followed.

Cheers!

Hi all, I'm trying to boot from my USB drive on my Lenovo IdeaPad U410. I changed the following settings in BIOS: * Boot mode -> legacy support (from UEFI)* Boot order -> USB HDD (listed my device) to the top, Windows Boot Manager to the bottom After that, I save the changes with Fn+F10 or via the Exit menu, and reboot the computer. When I go the BIOS then, the boot mode has been saved, but the boot order hasn't! Also, when I go to the boot menu and select USB HDD, the system doesn't boot my USB drive, but just boots windows. Does anyone know what's going on here? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Boot order isn't saved on the U410 and USB boot just boots windows

Hello and welcome,

Just tossing out some random ideas ...

Perhaps BIOS doesn't see your USB drive as bootable for some reason.  I'd expect the boot order to be saved anyway, though.  How have you prepared your external drive?  Is it an actual HDD or a flash drive?  What is installed on it that you're trying to boot?

If you try to set the boot order without your USB drive installed is there a generic USB HDD or similar entry that you can move?  If you do that does the order get saved?

In addition to legacy boot mode is there a CSM enable option?  I'd expect that to be automatic with legacy mode, but something to check.

Z.

Hey All This is my 1st post here.. I have Z580 laptop with One Key Recovery Option... I have dual boot in it - Windows 7 Home Basic and WIndows Server 2008 R2 I want to create a back up image file of both at the same time, using One Key Recovery, so that I can restore back in future, if need be 1. So, I will log in to, say, WIndows 7 and take the back up image.. Will that take an image for both OS at the same time? Basic question here is does it image of the Hard disk or each OS.. 2. Or do I have to take a separate image of both after logging into respective OS? 3. If answer to 1 is YES, will that restore both the systems at the same time in future using the One Key Recovery solution? 4. If the answer to 2 is YES, can i restore both the systems individually just by using the One Key Recovery solution? Br, Ajay Maheshwari

I have a following problem with my Thinkpad W520:During start of the boot sequence when I press the blue ThinkVantage button when suggested the laptop claims it's about to launch the 'Startup Interrupt Menu' but then it suddenly decides to boot to Windows instead. I use the laptop in UEFI mode. I've tried following steps to troubleshoot the problem:1) Accessed BIOS settings and loaded default values. // No effect.2) Reflashed the BIOS firmware (also tried older versions). // No effect.3) Cleared CMOS by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. // No effect.4) Reinstalled OS. // No effect. Looking at similar issues looks like it might be a problem with the UEFI system firmware. Something's went corrupt.(Case 1: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T430-Says-It-Is-quot-Launching-the-startup... )(Case 2: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W530-quot-To-interrupt-normal-startup-press-En... ) This behaviour started without a warning and it's definately annoying. * BIOS is latest 1.42* OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 Can the Lenovo staff help me restore UEFI settings? Answer:W520 doesn't execute 'Startup Interrupt Menu' anymore when requested but boots to Windows instead

I've been investigating this problem furthermore and tried the following: 1) Wipe out the HDD completely with dd tool in gparted live environment2) Setting BIOS to Legacy mode3) Tried restoring the laptop to factory defaults with Lenovo rescue disk set (this created the 3 partition set that these laptops ship with: SYSTEM_DRV, WINDOWS partition and RESCUE partition)==> this didin't fix anythingThinkVantage button behaviour changed so that it was about to launch Rescue and Recovery during boot but nothing happens (like with the so called launching of the Startup interrupt menu). Pressing Enter during boot the laptop tells it's about to launch startup and interrupt menu but nothing happens. Hi Everyone, I bought the new lenovo z580 with windows 7 64bit, I would like to dual boot it with Windows 8 and it won't let me.  I need a new partition so using the shrink volume feature I created a new partition.  When I try to load win8 there it tells me I cannot because the disc already has the maximum number of partition types on it, or allowed. Loaded Win7 back up, and tried creating a new labeled partition using Disk Man. but it says I would have to convert the disc to a dynamic one which will cause any installed OS to not load.  So I canceled that.... i extended the c: drive back to its orginal state but I don't see a way to dual boot with Windows 8.  Has anyone else had this problem ?I searched and couldn't find anything .... thanks.

The best way to dusal boot a NTLDR os(Win XP) and a BOOTMGR os(Win 8,7,Vista) is to install the ntldr os first and then the windows 8 os. I recently Installed a new motherboard (Abit KN8), processor (amd 64 3700+), and a vid card (nvida 7600 GT). I went thew the motions of installing all the hardware and then reinstalling windows XP, however thats when i noticed that the windows loading screen (with the logo and load bar) would go for about 5 seconds, then the bar would freeze were it was (not always the same position) and stay frozen for about 25-30 seconds and then suddenly unfreeze and continue for another 5 seconds as normal. I then installed all updated bios and drivers for all, but the problem remained. Althought Ive started my pc several times and its always loaded up in the end I find this 30+ second start up time annoying and possibly problematic. I dont know if windows just needs to be installed again (like the first time it messed up or soemthing?) or if its a motherboard or vid card issue...But before go threw the trouble of reinstalling windows I thought I would see If anybody knew anything about this. Appreciate anybodys help, thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a very wierd problem. I have Fedora Core 3 and Windows XP installed on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. For some reason, XP crashed, and would not restart. I got the screen saying that my system config file has got corrupted and that it needs the recovery disc. I inserted the disc, and it just hung after giving the message "windows is now checking your system hardware cofiguration". Windows xp setup cd would not boot, but the driver cd and the bios upgrade, and linux cds boot just fine. I used the Knoppix live cd and backed up all my documents on the windows partition on my fedora partition, and then reformatted my windows ntfs partition to fat32. I tried booting with the Windows xp setup again, and it hangs just like before. I have no clue about what to do next, and I seem to have run out of options. Heeeeelp!! - Svini

Where Can I download or order a Boot Disc for my Z580?  It came with Windows 7, and PC World were offering a free upgrade to Windows 8.  I am currently unable to create a Factory Default Recovery Disc.  There is an error with the Onekey Recovery software in burning onto the DVD / Disc.  I have tried two different DVDs (4.7GB), and have tried a CD (740MB).  And I receive the same error about one fifth of the way through. The reason I am having to do a factory reset, is because my Wirless Network driver is not working, and the laptop no longer accepts external wireless USB dongles.  I can't get internet even with a wired connection.  It isn't to do with whether the wireless is switched on or not.  I've tried this. What is Lenovos policy about providing customers with the means to restore their Laptops?  In the past computer manufacturers / suppliers provided all the software and bootdiscs. Thanks

Answer:Request for Boot Disc Z580 Windows 7. Unable to create bootdisc using OneKey Recovery 7.0

hi Timneedshelp,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried performing Recovery using the Recovery Button?

Turn off the system then press the small button like the one on the photo
And it should boot your system to a Recovery Like environment giving your options to restore factory back up,

If this one failed or not working, I suggest Calling Lenovo Technical Support in your location for a CD option,

Hope this helps
Cheers!

So, please can someone tell me what to do regarding this matter???

When I use the Fn +F6 key combination to turn off the touchpad, it will only hold for a couple of hours.  After that, the key command will not work and the touchpad is once again active. I cannot turn it back off again with the key command.   If I reboot the laptop, it will come up and start working again for a couple of hours then back to its old tricks.  If I let the computer go to sleep in the first couple of hours, it will work when it wakes up, but then again, I can't turn the touchpad back off. All other keys in the key row work fine.   I have updated the driver to the latest manufacturers driver and use the laptop plugged in all the time.  I am using a Logitech wireless USB track ball for a mouse.   I am running the most current version of Win 8 as well as the latest version of Start8. Any ideas? Paul

I have an Ideapad Z580 Windows 7. The touchpad isn't working. I installed the driver restarted the laptop and it works fine. When I close the laptop or shut it down, and turn it back on, the touchpad completely stops working. I've tried the US and the chinese driver, the Intelligent touchpad dirver. Everything else works but the touchpad. I usually stick with HP. But I saw Lenovo in Transformers and said why not it's good enough for them. I don't know what to do now. So frustrated.

Answer:Z580 touchpad doesn't work.

Hi glentastic,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Lenovo Community,

Am sorry to hear about your issue,

I?d like to ask you to press on FN + F6 together to make sure that the touchpad is enabled if still the same,

Maybe you can try to start the recovery for the system through the one key recovery button which is going to return the machine back to the initial state like a new machine,

But please take a backup from your data before starting in the recovery and please check the below link for the One key recovery:

Hope the information helps. Let us know.

Hi to all guys,i'm here with that little problem..I was doing some "cleaning" on my laptop and i was watching all the softwares that i had..So i thought that it was a great idea format the PC!I opened the "Onekey Recovery" software and i clicked the part where it says that i can format my pc...it says "Do you want to restart your pc for enter in Onekey Recovery Software?" I obviously clicked yes,and the pc restarted...but nothing happened:it did only a simply restart, and i didn't see any softwares show up :\ Anyone has an idea of why? Thanks,Ludovico. (Please sorry for my English,I'm Italian )

Answer:Z580 Onekey Recovery doesn't start!

hi Ludovico,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

The partition struction of the drive must have been modified that's why the recovery partition is not triggering via the OneKey Recovery application.

Try one of the following:
1. Create a recovery drive and use it to reset Windows 8.
2. Reset Windows 8

Hope this helps

Answer:Lenovo Z580 undusting doesn't work

Hi iShkilenok ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can try to uninstall energy management and the reinstall it back from the support site .
Restart the pc and test.

If same issue , you may have to physically open the cover and inspect the fan if it would be able spin.
While turned of try to test if the fan will smoothly move by pushing it with a small stick.
Check if there are clogged materials preventing it to spin like strands of fibers and dust.
Use a blower as needed .

If you don't have the tools or experience on doing this best that you have a service technician in your location do it for you.  Herewith are the hardware manual for review and guide.

I need some help guys, I had installed Windows 2000 as a third os system and now when I try to launch Windows XP I get this message:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\Windows\system32\cofig\systemd

How can I fix this issue?

Lastly, I really don't like Windows 2000 so I'm planning on removing it, do I simply just wipe the partition or are there some steps I must do before I simply wipe it away?

THX

Answer:Multiple Boots.... WIndows 2000 corrupted XP boot..

First off, I think if you boot the XP CD and run the recovery console and do a FIXBOOT, you'll get XP running again. If W2K is on it's own disk partition, you should be able to just nuke that without any issues.

Hi, Last night I was on my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop and it started running slow and wouldn't start so I manually turned it off; upon restarting the "Dell" logo pops up just fine followed by the blue line containing www.dell.com and then I see "PBR 2...done" quickly flash and I am greeted with this window: Please select operating system to start: Microsoft Windows Recovery Console do not select this [debugger enabled] Windows XP Media Center EditionUse the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.Press ENTER to choose. For troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows, press F8. If I don?t touch anything it will automatically select "Windows XP Media Center Edition" within a second or two and boot to a completely black screen. I tried selecting "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" which ultimately leads to this: Microsoft Windows XP™ Recovery Console. The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer. 1: C:\WINDOWS Which Windows installation would you like to log onto<To cancel, press ENTER>? I also tried hitting F8 and booting up in safe mode but it always sends me back to the "Please select operating system to start:" only difference being "Safe Mode" is illuminated in blue on the bottom right corner. I don't know what else to try....please help! Thanks,Brian

Answer:WINDOWS XP WONT BOOT/ONLY BOOTS TO A BLACK SCREEN

I would exercise the Recovery Console option, try to run the chkdsk /r command.

Hit Enter at the password line.

At the next line...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.

Well my daughter's computer is jacked up again. She is running WinXP Sp3.

When the computer boots up, it automatically goes to the safe mode boot screen without pressing F8. You know the one that gives you the option of booting into windows normaly or one of the three safe mode options. It doesn't boot into safe mode however.

It will NOT allow me to boot into safe mode either or boot normally or any other option for that matter and it just restarts and goes back into that screen again. The disks that came with the computer will not allow me to do a recovery or repair only a clean install, something I don't want to do.

What can I do?

Thanks.

Answer:Windows XP Sp3 only boots into the Safe Mode boot screen.

boot it up, hit Run and type in MSCONFIG then click the Boot tab and make sure "Safe Boot" is not checked, if it is, uncheck it, click apply and reboot.

Hi. I installed windows 7 x64 RC a while back, and it detected windows xp and set up a dual boot. All was well.

I had a PSU failure, and i replaced the PSU. I set the BIOS to boot from the drive with windows 7 on it. It wouldn't boot. I set the bios to boot from the drive with windows Xp on it, and it booted to the dual boot screen.

Apparently, windows 7 placed the boot information on the old XP drive, so if i try to boot to windows 7 from the windows 7 drive, its a no go.

Now, this wouldnt' bug me so much, except that i want to replace the Xp drive with a larger 1tb drive. I don't need XP anymore, and do need storage (xp drive is 160gb).

if i remove the XP drive, windows 7 won't boot. How can i fix this?

Answer:WIndows 7 dual boot with XP, boots from wrong drive

Put your install disk back in,
tell it to do a repair.
and that should find it

I've taken my friends laptop home (MSI S262) with me and first off i'll tell you what works:
- Boots memtest (cd) and passes 19 tests, no errors
- boots ubuntu and knoppix live cds
- can still read the hdd using knoppix +ntfs
- boots past BIOS (obviously)

Now, what doesn't work:
- windows xp hdd boot (loads past BIOS then hangs)
- windows xp home/pro retail boot cds (loads CD, enters into "Checking hardware etc" then blanks out)

With a desktop, i would normaly pull it apart and try and boot barebones, however since its a laptop its not an option.. also tried taking out the batterypack and holding the power button a bit as advised by a friend.

So.. comments, thoughts on how to proceed?

Answer:Laptop boots everything but windows xp/winxp boot disc

How old is the laptop. How long have you had the hard drive.
Sounds as if it is a bad hard drive, or a defective (scratched, marred) install disc.

Hi all,
Hope someone can assist me with this headache.
I have an HP dv5 1232 with vista home premium and recovery partition still intact ( i hope. )
I installed ubuntu to a partition of the hdd so on bootup I select windows of ubuntu from the grub menu.

When I upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 I chose to install grub file from the upgrade and followed instruction to tick all partitions to install it do ( maybe not the best move?)
To begin grub detected all OS but would only load Ubuntu - when I selected to load windows it sat in idle for a few seconds then just booted ubuntu instead.

however ....
Since trying to remedy this problem I have tried various methods of changing the mbr (bootrec.exe, bcdrebuild) but have actually gone back a step and now I don't even get the grub menu.
I have a vista recovery iso burnt to disc to get into command prompt, and can get into ubuntu via a live cd for terminal, however I've got no recovery or vista install discs to work with.

The partitions seem to be all intact If I could access the recovery partition and reinstall whole system to start over this would be great.- or any other suggestions welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I was recently running windows XP professional on my Compaq 1900 laptop when my hard drive crashed, so I searched on ebay and bought the exact same model MK6014MAP (Toshiba). When i got the drive I put it in my laptop and turned it on. It didn't automatically recognized the hard drive so I put the Compaq recovery disk in to help the BIOS recognize the drive, it worked and I was able to boot from the windows XP pro setup disk. While setup was formatting my hard drive it crashed at 94%!!! So i turned off my computer but this time the BIOS didn't recognize the hard drive. So I put in the Compaq recovery disk in again and the BIOS recognized it once again but this time my Laptop won't Boot from the XP cd it just gave me a black screen. I tried booting from the cd with the hard drive removed and it works perfectly!! Can some body please help me! I love this laptop and can't live without it!!!

Hello,

I have the System Builder license (Windows 8 64 bit Pro) not an upgrade.

I have Windows 7 on a physical HD for partition C on a completely separate HD (partition D) I have installed Windows 8.

Within the Windows 8 Metro interface I clicked on the charm settings in order to choose the option to restart, as I was watching the restart process and expecting to see a bootloader menu giving me the option to load either Windows 7 or Window 8 I instead watched as the Windows 7 logo appeared and loaded into.

I never received the option (or Boot Menu) to choose either Windows 7 or Windows 8.

If I put the Windows 8 DVD back into the DVD rom drive then I will receive the Boot Menu since the DVD is briefly read during boot sequence.

What gives??

Answer:Dual Boot not displaying, boots straight into Windows 7

Welcome to Eight Forums mothman.

For some reason the bootloader wasn't setup to dual boot.

Use your Windows 8 64 bit Pro DVD/USB to run Automatic repair, probably will need to run it three times with reboots each time.

Use option six to get to Trouble Shoot - advance options and Automatic Repair.

Hello,
I have bought older laptop latitude e6520, that was used in enterprise company before. It was running ok, until I upgraded RAM to 16GB. After hw change, windows wont boot either to system, or new installation. It always hangs at the screen with ms flag and rolling balls and hangs. Either win7 or win10 installation/boot. I can boot with no problems to ubuntu and all hw diagnostics are OK. I have tried to restart bios, upgrade bios, remove cmos battery for a while, revert hw change, but it still fails. Do you have any idea, what could cause that? I have tried with original disk and two different hdds and result is still the same. Should that be any protection in laptop from that enterprise company? When the laptop is booting, there is everytime shown name of that company.
I have no idea what to try now. I can run windows virtually from ubuntu, but I would like rather to have dualboot setup with native windows.

Thank you for any help, I am stuck :( Regards, Vojtech.

ChkDsk got interrupter during an unplanned scan. I left it continue but knocked the power cord. I remember it saying deleting ****** and now i cant boot. Safe mode is a no go. Half loads. My wireless keyboard does not like Fkeys and only got into safe mode once. Got a CD here that can gain access to recovery console but i know nothing about using. Any ideas before i reformat?

I assume i can create a new partition next to an existing windows and then move all my files across before deleting that partition?

Answer:ChkDsk ran at boot - Now only boots past windows loading,

I noticed ChkDsk can be found in the console. Ran it in the console and rebooted. Let the normal windows scan complete this time away from my power cord :D seems to be working fine again. Might be worth reading up on the console. Never needed it before.

Hi wjason777. Welcome to the TenForums @wjason777

Normally I don't comment in BSOD section of forum.

When you installed windows did you have other drives attached? I would re-do the clean installation with only your primary boot disk attached.

I would also get a fresh copy of windows using the media creation tool and just leave it on USB Key.

Here is the clean install tutorial.

Clean Install Windows 10

If you only have your windows and programs on boot disk I might be inclined to delete all partitions and let windows rebuild, think it is step 13 in tutorial. Ensure your data is backed up.

Have one of the mods move thread to Installation section.

This problem started with a random freeze while playing a game. No recent driver changes were made to the computer, but there was an update to the game shortly before problems began.

System froze completely and had to be forced (hold power 4+ seconds) to shut down. On reboot it stalled on the "Starting Windows" screen. Linux partition that I have on the drive boots fine, but I cannot access the windows part from it. To be honest I'm not sure of thats me (I'm a nub when it comes to linux) or something else.

I reboot using the windows 7 disk and try to chkdsk on the drive.. which takes HOURS. (12+) and get things like not enough space to apply fix or file segment ##### unreadable. My apologies not the non specific descriptions there.. I neglected to write them down.

I've read through googling this may be a drive failure, though I wonder why I can still boot to linux with no problems if that's the case. I'm attempting to get the seagate drive diag tools on a USB stick to run on the drive.

I tried hooking the drive up to another computer via a USB adapter, however it didn't like that.. I suspect that would be because the drive is win7 64, and the computer I tried to hook it up to was winxp 32.

I would appreciate any thoughts on other things to check as I go about this. Thank you for your time in reading community.

Answer:Win7 freeze/won't boot to Windows. Linux boots fine

Got seagate tools to run. It fails all tests and repairs with bad sectors everywhere. I guess the drive IS borked. I'll try to copy my Users directory to save my stuffs and get the IT guy at my school to RMA the drive.

My one touch button for the energy management is not working. I am running Windows 8 and originally saw no icons when I pressed the button, but I could tell the dedusting was working because I could hear the difference in the sound of the fan. Then, it just stopped working. Per recommendations in other posts, I uninstalled it and installed the Win 7 version. Now I do see the icons when I press the button; however, even though I can pick other options, there seems to be no change in the sound of the fan at all. The computer is getting very hot. Should I just turn it in under warranty? Also, when I press the movie button, nothing seems to happen. Please help!

I have a HP/Compaq nc6000 laptop that is a few years old running Windows XP. All service packs, etc are up to date.

Sometimes the laptop boots up normally and works fine and sometimes it doesn't. After pressing the power button, the power light comes on, the fan starts, (I think I hear) the hard drive spin and then it all stops. The power light goes to amber (charging) and then it turns off.

Typically when it boots properly, at the very beginning, the number lock, caps lock, and a third light all blink together, then turn off and it boots. When it's not going to boot, these lights don't even come on. (That's when I know it won't work.)

I've tried re-seating the memory. That worked twice but now I think it was just luck.

The first time I opened it, I also pulled a huge dust bunny from the fan. The rest of the insides were pretty clean and dust free. I blew everything out anyway.

Before this started happening, the machine was having some weirdness waking up after hibernating.

The problem happens sometimes after I shut it down properly and sometimes not. It's also booted up fine after a crash.

I've tried setting all the power controls to everything always on and leaving the computer on. But sometime in the middle of the night, it powers down. (I don't know whether this is a gentle power down or if it just shuts off instantly.)

The last time, it wouldn't start for a couple days and then I tried... Read more

I am not Even Sure if Its Freezing

There is a computer of a friend of mine. We took every single piece out and cleaned the dust on the pieces. After putting everything back together, it doesn't boot up properly. I see the bios screen than it asks me if where to boot, I choose HDD option. Then windows xp asks me what type of start up i want to go with. I chose normal, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt but whatever i chose didn't matter, it didn't started up.

When loading with safe mode option, it always freezes while loading amdagp.xxx file. When loading with normal mode option, i see gray bar at the bottom progressing and when it gets fully gray, there suppose to be a windows logo but instead i get a black screen.

I thought it might be the hard drive damaged and replaced it with another hdd of mine which also has xp professional on it. But it had the same problem. What are the possibilities? What can be wrong? Computer is HP Pavilion XT928.

Thank you

Hey guys, this is fairly long so bear with me...

Came back to my PC the other day, and it was turned off, when I had left it it was still on. To cut a long bit short, I discovered it was the fuse in the plug for the PSU power lead. So I replaced the fuse, turned on the mains, and BANG - PSU blew up (while it was still installed in PC).

Took it out, replaced with other PSU - started up PC and it would boot OK, and give me the single beep, but then would stay on a black screen and not proceed to the Windows splash screen.

So I tried booting into safe mode, this gave varied results - sometimes it would freeze when loading the various files at that black screen, other times it would actually let me log into Windows but then freeze straight away and I had to reboot.

So I booted from the windows cd-rom, and it would get as far as saying "Setup is loading Windows" or similar, then freeze.

Next, ordered another hd, removed old one - installed the new blank one, ran the Windows bootable cd, and this time it installed Windows fine. There I was thinking everything was now OK - not so. The PC was very unstable and kept crashing while installing new programs and using programs etc. I've gone back to it today, and now I am having the same problems as the previous hard drive. Windows won't load either way, and I can't even re-install from the Windows cd-rom as that freezes like before as well.

Basically all this leads me to believe it's gotta be something... Read more

Hi.

My PC sometimes POST's and boots and other times it doesn't. And when it does get to desktop the computer freezes.

The PC is a new build (3 weeks old) and for the past 2 weeks, it freezes usually any time between the computer turning on to when it reaches the desktop, and so requires me to keep restarting the computer (average around 4-6 times) before I can use the computer normally.

Once it's turned on and working, the computer won't crash or freeze at all.

And it's gotten worse over the past week where sometimes it POSTS and sometimes it doesn't and after lots of restarts it reaches the desktop and works perfectly.

I am thinking it is most probably the memory, what do you think and may you please help me.

Thanks.

EDIT: I'd like to add that when it doesn't POST there's no image on the screen.

Here are my computer specs:

CPU: i7 920 @ stock speed
Motherboard: XFX X58i
GPU: XFX ATI 4890
Memory: some generic Micron, 3x1gb, here it is: MT8JTF12864AZ-1G1

Okay, I've fiddled with this for a while now, a couple days ago when I turned on the computer I would get an error message saying how system/config (something like that) was corrupt. I then googled this and did not really find a solution for it. Almost all of the people that encountered this problem did not know where the source of the problem was. I figure I would give reformatting a shot. After formatting, I figure that I can now use my computer with no worries about more problems but then now different problems appeared.

When I turn on the computer sometimes it would boot up nicely with no problems at all but sometimes it would not boot. The computer hangs right before the windows xp flag appears with the loading bar under it. What I see instead is a different loading bar (DOS style) that spans the entire width of my screen. I thought maybe this was just a problem with my installation of XP, so then I go and boot into my Ubuntu installation (I use grub bootloader and the two OS's are on their own partitions on the same physical drive) and the Ubuntu freezes at the loading screen as well. I went through testing each component of my computer afterwards.

I figure that my processor should be okay since I managed to get this far while loading the computer (I could be totally wrong on this part). I also tested the RAM with memtest86+ that was on the Ubuntu disc. I finished one pass with no errors so I guess the memory is okay. The graphics card should also be okay si... Read more

Well, this laptop is a piece of sh... I've deleted the partition table, reboot and then the computer freezes. Push F2 and it says "Entering Setup..." but nothing happens. When push F12 the same thing... So I've read that if you remove the HD the computer continues to boot, and it does! (clearly a bug) And you can even enter BIOS or select a Boot media. But of course I need a HD. I think that the problem is deleting the hidden partition (might be wrong) and when the HD does not find it, it freezes. It's a bug, but it doesn't allow me to use the HD. So what I'm trying to do is trying to recover the partition table with testdisk (Linux) plugging the HD to my desktop computer. What would be nice if someone has this hidden partition, you could make an image of it and upload it somewhere. Because there might be a chance I won't be able to recover it. And I'll also need information about the partition so I can make it, in case I need to do so... Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

you shouldn't have deleted the partition.as i read somewhere in this forum, there's an application to fix it but i don't remember where it is. you can try to search.and you can order recovery dvds by calling lenovo, just in case you may need.

Tonight I restarted my computer and that is when things went wrong. When I got to the desktop I could see my desktop just fine but the computer is completely frozen. The mouse doesn't respond, the keyboard doesn't respond and one other odd thing is when it boots up the little network icon at the bottom that shows if you are connected or not spins for awhile and then I see a red X over the network icon.

So I rebooted went into bios and reset everything to stock, I was overclocked for as long as I can remember, a year now?

Any way that didn't help. I tried to go back to overclocked settings and failed to boot. I had to reset CHMOS on mobo to get the settings back to default.

Any ideas? Is my RAM fried? I did try to take out two sticks and left two in. Nothing, I then swapped out the sticks I took out for the ones that were in there. No luck.

I'm heading to bed. I'll be back tomorrow to follow up.

Thanks for the help. If you think it's my RAM I might just go buy some at fry's tomorrow during lunch.

Specs in sig are up to date...

Answer:Computer boots up but doesn't respond at all.

I would possibly assumr it's a ram problem, you said when you came back your pc it was frozen but you could see the screen was active right ? I mean by getting some sort of display.
It could be a fact of a hardware or driver software conflict.
Since you also said the networking icon had a red x start by trying to disable it in windows or if it's ethernet card remove it.
Also see if you can find or by some ram and see what will happen.
I'll check back in early in the afternoon to see what you said.

When I turn my computer on Explorer.exe doesn't autorun. For some reason My Documents opens up with all the text of the files written in a blue font. I have to do the whole Ctrl+Alt+Del thing and run it manually.

Things I have already tried:
1. Made HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon > Shell: "explorer.exe" through regedit

2. Made HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon > Userinit: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," through regedit [Made sure comma was there]. [see above screenshot]

3. Ran the script from http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...ydocsopens.htm that is supposed to fix registry.

4. Ran CCleaner and fixed all registry problems.

5. Googled so much that I used up all their bandwith :[ j/k

I can not find any other information out there other than setting shell to explorer.exe which it has been the whole time. It was never c:\windows\config\lsass.exe or anything like that.

Someone said they fixed it by running msconfig, unchecking explorer.exe, restarting, then rechecking explorer.exe [at least thats how I read it.] When I run msconfig.exe I do not even see the words 'explorer.exe' to uncheck at all. If that is a way to actually fix this, could someone tell me where to uncheck? It's not under the startup tab or any tab for that matter.

Answer:My Documents boots, Explorer.exe doesn't.

Hi -

"Explorer.exe" is probably in thousands of registry keys in English, binary and hex form. Not knowing how Explorer got this way makes finding a fix all that more difficult. I have a feeling that you may have done additional damage with the registry cleaner(s). I will just say that you really never need to "clean" the registry unless instructed to do so. They are not errors that were "fixed", rather lost file associations that account for about 0.1% of the total registry keys.

If the registry cleaning was not to long ago, it is likely that you still have a system restore point on hand and can restore the system back to that time. I suggest that you do so. Then run the system file checker/ repair utility - SFC and see if it helps with Explorer.

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select run as Administrator | the black command prompt ("DOS") screen will appear | type the following:

Code:
sfc /scannow
Upon completion re-boot to allow files in use to be repaired.

Hello.

1. Problem
So this thing happened after I was chilling on my laptop on battery. Windows didn't warn me that I was low on battery, so it went to sleep for a few seconds, then booted up without me touching anything (thought I had time plug it in quickly) and then boom - it shut down. Laptop plugged in, I was ready to boot the laptop up. I was ready that it'd tell me that "last shutdown wasn't done properly, blablabla" - I was familiar with this, so I had two options:
- "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)"
- "Start Windows normally"
First I tried to "start normally" - as you may think already, it didn't "start normally", it booted to the ASUS' recovery wizard (to make things clear, Startup Repair also boots to ASUS' recovery wizard), which looks like this. So these three options from the last picture:
Recover Windows to first partition only
This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive "C".

Recover Windows to entire HD
This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C".

Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions
This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions "C" (60%) and "D" (40%).

My thought is to keep the files and get Windows bootable again, so none of these options are for... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 doesn't boot, only able to boot to ASUS recovery wizard

Don't have an Asus but there should be an option to recover to factory condition.. If not the 6 recovery disks you made will do that. They are a copy of the recovery partition only. Use the Linux disk to save everything on the drive you want to keep to another drive. Boot to disk 1 and follow the instructions.
Hirens and UBCD can both be used to repair the MBR which You should try first.

It is hard to know without seeing the machine, but I can guess.  You would get those symptoms if the boot option in the BIOS for the Z570 had legacy support and the Z580 was set for UEFI only.

Hello,

I recently purchased a copy of x64 Windows 7 Business. I downloaded it from the Online store DigitalRiver as part of the students deal.

Here is my system information:
Current operating system: Windows Vista x32 Business
Processor: Intel Quad Core 2 Q6600 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4GB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz
Motherboard: Intel 975XBX2 KR Socket 775
BIOS version: 2838 (Latest)

I burned the x64 Windows 7 installation files onto a DVD. I am aware that it is not going to run from my current OS since it is x32.

My Boot order is the following: DVD/CD ROM -> HDD

I tried to boot with the x64 Windows 7 DVD but it simply didn't. So I decided to format my computer using the x32 Vista DVD.

After the format, I tried to boot with the x64 Windows 7 DVD and it failed again.

So I re-installed x32 Vista and I still cannot boot with the x64 Windows 7 DVD.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Today I went into setup when my computer was starting up, and went to the CPU usage thing. It said that the minimum was 100 and the max was 132. It was at 100, so I typed in 132 and pressed enter. (I know it was stupid ) Then I saved changes and pressed exit. Then the screen turned off. I pressed the restart button, and the computer makes all the noises and such, but no image comes up on screen. It has nothing to do with the cable not being plugged in because it you unplug it, is says "Check video cable"Is there anyway of entering setup and changing it back, maybe even doing it through a network? PLEASE HELP!!!!

Answer:I raised CPU usage to max in setup -boots but doesn't come up

NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER do anything without thinking about it first. It is interesting that your computer is doing this. First, Disconnect all of the computer cables and reconnect them. If it doesn't work, reset the BIOS jumper (you would have to open up your computer and read your manual to do this)Hopefully, this should fix the prob.

Hello all, this is just a general question I've been looking for an answer to for a long time. Normally I just lurk the Linux forum, but I figure I'll pick your brains with this one...
I have two flash drives, a 4GB Kingston DataTraveler and a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer. When plugged in to any computer running any operating system they both work wonderfully, mounting properly and storing data. I work as a sysadmin for a professor here at my school, and occasionally I need to boot linux from a live USB to fix a broken/failing computer. I generally use Unetbootin to create it, but I've used other methods. I've tried to boot from both drives and only the 16GB drive works... most of the time. A few computers including my primary laptop, an Acer Aspire 5920G, will boot from both of them. My netbook, an Acer Aspire One D150, will not, and it's newer than my laptop. Most of the computers here at work are very old, anywhere from 1-10+years (some of these beasts are running Fedora Core 1). None of them will boot from the 4GB, but all work with the 16GB.
Does anyone know why? The only thing I can think of is the U3 partition on the 16GB that fools computers into thinking it's a CD (or something like that). Still, why would a computer be much more likely to boot from a live CD than a live USB? If it's a driver problem, wouldn't Unetbootin take care of that? All of these computers have the ability in BIOS, and I've set the boot order to boot from USB Device, but they either skip it completely... Read more

Answer:One flash drive boots, the other doesn't, but they both mount!

I have a feeling it is how the U3 based one communicates with the PC, as they are literally, a different breed of flash drives.

Hi to all. For some reason my XP OS is able to boot up, but instead of taking me to the regular boot up screen, with the icons and the click and password screen, I'm instead taken to a all black page with a little box in the middle where it says to type in user name and password. I am running windows xp home edition sp2. Then when I type in my user name and password, I am able to see my current background but nothing else loads up, and then I get a pop up saying that some .exe file has an error and thats all. I press ok and then all I get is my background with nothing loading up. I've waited 2 hours and still nothing loads, I put CDs, external hard drives, and pressed what ever you can think of, ex. alt+ctrl+delete, still nothing. Please help me, I will stay on the forums to answer any required questions you have. THANK YOU so much.

Hello,
I would greatly appreciate help with my problem. My PC, an Acer Aspire AM5641-U5630A with Windows Vista, only starts up sometimes. When I press the power button, the blue power light comes on and the fans start sounding. However, after it quiets down there is no beeping noises and a display does not come on. On times in which the computer does turn on, a beeping noise is heard and an Acer logo display comes on before it proceeds to start up like normal. Once I'm past the Acer logo the computer works fine. It seems to be random as to when it powers up but I have tried an upwards of 20 restarts before.

Thanks,

This is most likely caused by a weak or failing power supply. Open up the case and make sure that the fans are running and everything is free of heavy dust and other debris...

Ok friends, i'm having a bad time with my hdds.

I have this 200gb seagate which i was using. It has my OS installed .. and it has 2 partitions.

I went to sleep and kept my comp on, but i saw in the morning, that the computer had restarted and was on the pre-bios screen where it dint detect my hdd (but did detect my dvd drive).

I switched the pc off/on and it appeared back .. i went on to boot to my windows but it again restarted.

I tried booting into safe mode but it restarted again.

Finally i made another attempt but this time it would just show me an error "drive read fail. Press alt+ctrl+del to restart"

I then tried to scan my hdd with seagate hdd diagonistic tools, it detected 19 bad sectors, but when i tried to repair them it dint work, i mean it would just stay on the first sector and the text "TESTING" keeps blinking.

I ran the scan again and the same thing happened.

I ran the scan again but this time skipping the first one and repairing the next one, but again it kept the text "testing" blinking and sticking to the 2nd sector itself.

I dont know why is this happening. This is the 2nd time in 2 weeks my hdd is acting up. (the 1st one died completely, suddenly). I recently fixed the bad sectors in this same hdd, but donno how it would gain so many bad sectors back again so soon. Why is this happening?

And why doesn't the seagate tools fix the errors? (knowing that it fixed some bad sectors just past w... Read more

So I'm having a problem with my X220t. Last week I woke it from sleep and the screen wouldn't turn back on. The unit was powered on because I heard it wake back up and I could activate the finger print scanner and I could hear it log in. I thought it was a display port issue because I had the unit hooked up to my TV via HDMI to displayport adapter the night before, and that the computer was just thinking it was still hooked up to the TV. I tried the function F7 command and no luck. Did a hard reboot and everything turned back on just fine. Fast forward to today. This time I was not using the display port when I put the unit to sleep, and it is experiencing the same issues as last time, but even hard reboots are not getting the screen to turn on. I have tried removing the battery and power cables, pressing the on button 10 times, reconnecting everything and powering the unit back on and still no dice. Like before I can hear the unit get to the start screen and it will allow me to log in via the finger print reader, but the screen never turns on (no back light, or anything). Any thoughts? When I get home tonight I will attempt to hook the unit up to my TV again and see if there is anything wrong there, but otherwise I think something may be wrong with my screen or atleast the connection to my screen. I'd like to get this fixed ASAP because I have business trip planned for next week that I need my laptop for.....

welcome to the community.

sorry you're having issues.
take a look at your hardware maintenance manual: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM006561
and see pgs 68-71 to determine if you want to pull the keyboard and look at the lcd connectors to check for looseness or disconnection. if all looks ok there, the ribbon cable itself may be damaged and that's something more suitable for Service to look at, especially if you're still under warranty.

I'm kind of stuck here...

First what happened: last night my computer froze so I turned it off and then back on. However, when I did, the monitor just remained in standby as if the computer was not on. Everything on the computer seems to be working ok (fans going, lights on, etc). I also don't hear any beeps during the startup.

I've been browsing a lot of forums trying to figure out what is wrong, but I'm somewhat lost. I don't know that much about computers...
It seems some of these forums say the main culprits for a problem like this are the graphics card or the motherboard? Is this true?

Since every thread always has someone asking for specs - here they are:
Intel i7 940
Asus p6t intel x58 chipset sle/crossfirex mainboard triple-channel x
800w power supply
1 TB SATA II 3.0 gb 7200rpm HD
3 x 2GB DDR3 PC3 PC1333
1 x EVGA nvdia gtx 260 896mb pci-e
windows vista home premium

What I've done so far:
I have tried unplugging it and holding down the power button in the front for about 1 minute. 90% of the time this did nothing. One time it started to boot correctly with the monitor only to freeze during the windows load up bar and 1 other time it didn't even make it that far...
I have tried using another monitor on the computer. Same problem. I have also tried using my main monitor on another computer and it works fine.

I have been running this setup for almost 2 years, and nothing has been changed recently...

I've been fighting this problem for months and haven't found an answer anywhere but maybe you guys can help. My computer seems to boot fine, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. The power light on the monitor ON button just blinks amber. If I wait a minute or so and then hit the reset button the computer reboots and the monitor comes on. The computer started doing this about 6 months after I built it. Once in a great while it will boot up on the first try, but it's very rare. I was thinking video card, but have unseated and reseated it a couple of times to no avail. I also got a new battery on the motherboard thinking it was having a problem. Now I'm thinking power supply or BIOS - any ideas?

Daughter brought her HP DV9500 (Vista 32bit). Very suspicious of malware. If I check the BIOS, it does not see the hard drive (nor does that option appear in the boot menu). However, if you boot the machine, it will load Vista and allow you to log in. After about 10-30 seconds usage, the keyboard and mouse buttons freeze and what was on the screen still remains with that bloody awful circle going round and round. Now the mouse will still move across the screen via the touchpad or a usb mouse but the keyboard is dead as are the mouse buttons.I can boot parted magic on UBCD and access all the files on the C: drive (one physical, three partitions including a recovery partition - how it came from the factory) and run all day long. Disk diagnostics on UBCD show the hard drive is present and no errors. However, the bios diagnostic says replace the hard drive.I've rebuilt the BCD using Microsofts bootrec to no avail.I'm trying to get it sane enough to offload 4 years worth of pictures, music, and classwork, etc. and then I'll try restoring the OS from the recovery partition.I should mention that I ran an older Linux bootable version of Avira (dated Sept 2009) and it noted multiple occurrences of html/infected.webpage.gen as well as two other (going to try to recover the names from the Avira logfile). Thanks in advance.AJG

Hello! I have problems with my W500. It sometimes boots, and sometimes not.It literally is random, and I have no idea why. The times it doesn't boot, it hangs right after the press on the power button, when the "Lenovo Thinkpad" screen appears. It just does nothing. It doesn't react on keyboard presses. I waited on this screen sometimes for hours. If I am lucky after several minutes it finally boots. Sometimes it boots right away, without problems. The BIOS software got updated by me yesterday, but it didn't change the problem. There are no devices connected to the Thinkpad that could cause that problem (no usb drives, no network cable, ...).  The USB ports seem to be fine (this is one of the solutions that people are given when encountering my problem). I hope someone can give me recommendations on what do do or what could be broken. Thanks in advance, czenjio

Answer:W500: Sometimes boots, sometimes doesn't (hangs at Lenovo screen)

I will assume you are not doing something unusual, like a network boot and that you are not normally connected to a domain controller for security. Something is timing out. It is probably just a motherboard problem, but there are things to try. Pull the optical drive. Then, I would first, disable all the optional devices in the BIOS. You can see them by looking at the security tab and choosing I-O port access. If that fixes things, add them back one or two at a time to see when it gets sick. Please note, there are lots of parts that connect as USB devices, such as the internal keyboard, touchpad, Bluetooth, camera, etc.

Hi there! My name is Michele and I'm from Germany and just recently bought a Yoga 13 from Bestbuy in the US.Until now it ran smoothly with minor faults, I could live with. But yesterday I tried to change the virtual memory and did the neccessary restart.Since then, it only starts, the Lenovo Screen appears and then I get blue Screen that says "Recovery". Nothing more.Any keystroke other than Enter does nothing. Hitting Enter once makes the screen black for a moment until it returns in blue without saying Recovery anymore, nothing more interaction then.Tried a Windows 8 USB Stick with the repair options but they all failed stating, that the Drive of the Windows Installation is protected or something.I'm out of ideas, please help! I really don't want to set everything to the start. :/

So I press the power button on my desktop. Powers up fans kick on and run high on processor and Video card for about 5 minutes. The power button does not light. After about 5 minutes the power button lights shows the gateway splash screen and then boots into windows. if you leave the computer run for a while (few hours) and you shut it down and boot it back up its fine. If you leave it off over night it shows the symptoms explained above.

Answer:Desktop boots blank -- Gateway doesn't even come up for five minutes

Replace the power supply...

My pc doesn't work now. After windows boot manager appears, i choose windows xp and was immediately greeted with a black screen. Lights on my pc was still on. At first i thought perhaps xp is corrupted, so i reboot into windows vista and was met with the same black screen. Both versions of windows reboot after a few mins of black screens. Any ideas? I HAVE BOTH XP AND VISTA INSTALL.DISCS BYW

Answer:Windows doesn't boot after boot manager

First of all, welcome to BC !

I would say your best bet at this point would be to use your Vista disc to do a full reinstall of Vista, this should get your computer running again even if it only has Vista on it. Vista at least has the advantage of being still supported.

The problem here is that a full re-install will wipe - format - your hard drive so the question becomes 'have you got any data on this computer that you don't have backed to external media ?'.  If you do have data that you haven't got backed up, probably the simplest way to do this is to create a self-booting Puppy Linux disc and use that to boot your computer and recover your data to some sort of external media - DVDs, memory stick, external hard drive, whatever. You will of course have to use a different computer to create the Puppy disc. You can get the necessary files and information on how to use it from here -

Between that and your Vista disc you should be able to salvage your data and get your computer running again.

Question: Z580 Does Not Boot

Working on my mother-in-laws Z580 laptop. It doesn't boot properly. The machine seems to boot but the screen is blank. Tried the function keys to turn on/off the LED backlight, but no joy. I saw there was a bios update, but it will not install gives error 216 Failed to read BIOS from ROM! Status = 1604. I looked the start up bios startup screen and it says that the BIOS is an EVALUATION VERSION - NOT FOR RESALE. How can I get this fixed? Or get the new BIOS to install? She bought it from Staples in fall of 2012 and has only used it about two dozens times. Thanks

Answer:Z580 Does Not Boot

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Have you tried hooking up the laptop to an external monitor to see if there is any screen activity on that display when Windows boots up?

I assume that the image posted was taken from the laptop's display.  If it was at least you know the display is functioning before the operating system is loaded.

Why do you think a BIOS upgrade will resolve the problem ?

Ever since the newest major update, my PC has stopped resuming from sleep. It'll boot up (I think) with the keyboard and mouse lit up but the screen always stays black. Takes a hard reset to get it running at which point the sleep data is gone and wasted. I've had allow hybrid sleep on or off, had USB suspend enabled and disabled, disabled fast boot and hardware fast boot. I changed a lot of settings I thought would be related and nothing. Nothing makes the slightest difference. Am I missing something? I really need to fix this as I rely on this thing to turn off overnight.

Answer:PC often doesn't return from sleep. Display stays black while it boots

Hi wideawakepc, what I'd do is ether 1. Check to see if there's an update for the bios. I can't tell you exactly because I've only ever done it on XP. 2. Contact Microsoft because they offer free or only ?25 (don't know in dollars) for support for Win10. Hope this helps☺

I have a problem like this also. kind of.
My kids PC wouldn't boot. i replaced the HD with an old 1 i had. It booted fine, right to windows that was on the HD already. After i restarted it wouldn't boot anymore. VIRUS. ok fine. Problem now is that during to boot process it wont see the HD. If i go into the bios and leave it on Auto select for where the HD is it'll show, but it takes about 30seconds to do so. I cant boot with a start-up disk either, for some reason it wont. i changed boot sequences unpluged things nothing will work. I cant flash the bios becuase it wont read for the A drive. I cant get a A: or a C: prompt. the only thing i can get is a BOOT FAILURE ERROR.
the system is a PII 400, 13gig western digital HD, 128mb ram, Asus p3v133 motherboard. win98

I have everything set to the correct master/slave settings ( i tried a bunch of different combs of them. ) i'm lost. i've done all i can. now i need help. thx

Answer:problem with hardrive... my computer boots up to the a: prompt doesn't read hd

Hello,

I've recently erased & reformated my brother's Notebook, & put a clean install of Vista on the machine (the disk which came w/the computer). I went to the mfg'er's website (Gateway) & updated all of it's driver's. Now when i update Vista & allow the machine to restart, it idles without loading any drivers. It simply stays there w/a black screen. Also, MSCONFIG refuses to save any of the changes i make to it.

The notebook is in great condition. Was wondering if anyone knew of something beyond a workaround? I would my brother to be using this w/Vista automatically updating itself (aka restarting without issue).
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds. I really do appreciate it greatly.

Hi...I'm not sure where to put this request, thought since the Dell Inspiron 15 is running Windows 10 (including latest update) that there might be a conflict between the desktop and the keyboard down in the nuts and bolts somewhere. I can turn the machine on, the capslock light comes on, SOMETIMES the keyboard works well enough to input the pin to get the desktop booted up. Sometimes I have to go through steps to get the touch screen keyboard up in order to input the pin. However, as soon as the desktop is active, the keyboard no longer works. I've updated the drivers, don't know what else to do. When I try a search online for a solution, I get differing ideas on how to solve the problem. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, that didn't work. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I really need the keyboard to be working, my kids do their homework on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.
