Z70-80 - How do I make sure laptop stays up all the time no power save, sleep, display lock, nothing

Question: Z70-80 - How do I make sure laptop stays up all the time no power save, sleep, display lock, nothing

I just purchase a z70-80 with Windows 10, and I installed VMware WorkStation with Ubuntu running inside it. The screen lock comes up after a few minutes even though I am running development tools in the VM. I went to display settings, and in Power and sleep and modified the screen turn off and sleep to 45 minutes. But that did not resolve the issue. I would like to have the screen up indefinately. What setting do I need to adjust please? I do not know if it is a sleep mode, or the screen saver, or something else. I hope I am describing the issue with the right words.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, My dell monitors will not function as secondary monitors for my lenovo X1.With another X1 they perform ok. All monitors (I have tested 5 so far), fail in the same way, they go into "Entering power save" mode on power up when connected to the X1. All cables and monitors have been checked with another PC and another X1.My X1 detects the existence of the monitor (shows it as secondary monitor in windows control panel), but monitor only briefly shows "entering power save mode" when connected to X1 and goes blank. David

I Just got a used dell demension 2400 from a relative, and it worked perfectly once it was at their house. Something must have happened during the transport, but the monitor goes green for a few moments the turns orange and once you press a button on the monitor it say " power saving mode press the power button on you machine or any key on your keyboard or move your mouse" this was tried and failed. So we unconnected the monitor and reconnected it and still doesn't work although when the monitor is plugged into my laptop it works perfectly. So we try taking the battery out of the mother board and tapping where the plug is etc etc and nothing seems to work. Any Suggestions?

Dear readers,

I have a problem with my monitor/pc. 2 nights ago i turned of my pc, and the next day i tried to turn it on, it runs like usual, no weird sounds came up when i push the power button, but my monitor did nothing. I replaced it with another one and that one worked fine till today. Today i have the same problem as i did yesterday but switching monitors didn't work. I can't see anything from start till... i don't know how far my computer boots. I tried the following : switching video cards with no results, switching monitors, resetting my bios, switching rams, put 1 of the 2 rams in, looked if my cpu was correct in everything without any result.( It worked 2 full days without any problems!) I connected my monitor 2 my laptop and in that situation it works fine. My computer is like 1 week old and when it's on i don't experience any problems. on my monitor there is a green ledlight that is constantly going on/off

some specifications:
Dual core 1.8
FSB 1033
2gb ram
Video 3850 HD
monitor is a standard CTR screen / tried a synmaster 151s aswell

I am out of options please could some GOD help me!

Already much appreciation and sorry for my bad english!

I have an older Dell Dimension 8200 desktop running Win XP with all the latest updates. Computer has been working great for the past 6 years and shut it off about a week ago. Today when I started it the monitor never showed the start up screen and stays black. When I select one of the monitor buttons it says it is in power save mode and hitting a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse does nothing. I have tried the various methods stated on the internet such as: checked video cables seated, replaced motherboard battery, re-seated video card, tried another video card, re-seated memory, tried the monitor with another computer and it works fine. Does any expert here have a fix for this??? Thanks in advance.

so in addition to the other problem that i have about standby on the x201, sometimes, very rarely, when i put the computer to sleep, the moon indicator will flash like normal and stay on after 3 or 4 flashes, but sometimes the battery indicator will stay on even after the moon light has come on. the battery indicator will go out a few seconds aftder the computer has gone to sleep. has this happened to anyone else? usually the battery indicator goes out as soon as the standby indicator is solidly lit.

Answer:battery light stays on for a long time when putting to sleep

I occasionally have the same issue. Only workaround I have found is to reawaken my thinkpad and put to sleep/hybernate again.  Sorry, not much of a solution to offer.

When I walk away from my computer, after a while the screen goes black like it does when it goes to sleep. Sometimes it does actually go to sleep and the power button blinks, then I just press it to wake it up. However the majority of the time the screen goes black but the power button stays lit up. When this happens, pushing the power button or any key will not wake it up. I have to push and hold the power button to shut it down then turn it back on. This happens multiple times a day sometimes and can get very irritating.  I do not get any error messages or anything. The only recent thing is the update to windows 10 and my internet connection is through a mobile hotspot on my cell. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!!!

Ok, I have had this happen on two of my computers now.

When I turn on my computer it sounds like it powers on, the fans turn on the green light on the motherboard comes on saying it has power, it Sounds like the HDD turns on and starts running. Ive taken out the Graphics card and plugged the cord into the onboard video, still nothing, ive reset the graphics card, tried putting in only one stick of ram, with each one, (i have 4 sticks 4 1GB) still didnt work, reset CMOS, reset processor, also normally before the monitor stops working either the audio or the onboard LAN stops working, im not sure if its because one of the motherboard screws i use is plastic maybe not giving a good ground.

if u have any further questions let me know, ive tried almost everything but if you think of something it could be let me know, i sent in the motherboard, thank god for warranties, but i really dont want this to happen to my new motherboard. so any help would be appreciated

BTW i did build this computer components from newegg.com, case from xoxide.com

I don't know the motherboard or the case designs ( maybe someone else will )
The green light is for the RAM it is on a different power rail ( and Voltage ) to the Mainboard rail.
Things to check when the new MoBo arrives before you power the unit ON
< The clearance underneath the MoBo ( with all the components attached ) between it and the case. It needs to be a positive gap try for at least four post-it-notes wide, more if the fans vibrate the board
< That the fasteners that do get used for earthing the MoBo to the case are tested with an resistance metre ( 0.00 ohms )
< That the fasteners that do not get used for earthing the MoBo are insulated against this happening

this is same problem of tech81 thread posted oct.2007 I have a dell dimension 4700, I do not know if there is a hardware problem or an OP system problem. The computer stays in a power save mode and takes forever(days) to wake it up. The button on the front of the computer and on the monitor are always amber. Tried powering down and back up again. The dell screen pops up for a second and then all goes black. If I hit any button on the screen it reads in power save mode hit any key or move mouse. Hate to say I called dell tech support and no luck.

Hello,

This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach group. It is possible that the system is locked in a loop. Try removing the power from the computer. When that is done, press and hold the power button for 25 seconds. Reapply the power and try to power on the computer normally.

Report back if there is any change in the boot behavior.

Dell Dimension 2400 running XP...

I see a green light on the mobo when the machine is plugged in. When PC is turned on, I get no beeps, and the diagnostic lights remain dark. I get no beeps at all, the CPU fan does run, the power light on the front is green, the hard drive activity light is amber, The monitor displays a message about being in the power save mode, and to press any key or move the mouse. Of course, nothing happens when I do that. I have hooked it up to another monitor, which acts like it has not been connected to a PC (Check Video Cable or Input Select).

I am using a 2013 Ultraslim Docking Station with my Elitebook 1040 G3 and have a Dell P2417H monitor. When I put my laptop on the docking station, almost without fail, the local display turns black with just the mouse cursor on it and the external display stays in sleep mode.  Most of the time, if I send the laptop to sleep, then wake it up again, the external monitor wakes up.   Why do I have to go through this process twice EVERY time I put my laptop on the docking station? Is there anything I can do to resolve this? I have replaced the docking station and the issue is still present. A co-worker uses the old docking station and experiences no problems.

Ever since the newest major update, my PC has stopped resuming from sleep. It'll boot up (I think) with the keyboard and mouse lit up but the screen always stays black. Takes a hard reset to get it running at which point the sleep data is gone and wasted. I've had allow hybrid sleep on or off, had USB suspend enabled and disabled, disabled fast boot and hardware fast boot. I changed a lot of settings I thought would be related and nothing. Nothing makes the slightest difference. Am I missing something? I really need to fix this as I rely on this thing to turn off overnight.

Answer:PC often doesn't return from sleep. Display stays black while it boots

Hi wideawakepc, what I'd do is ether 1. Check to see if there's an update for the bios. I can't tell you exactly because I've only ever done it on XP. 2. Contact Microsoft because they offer free or only ?25 (don't know in dollars) for support for Win10. Hope this helps☺

I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my Satellite M100 series.

Everything works fine but when the pc is forced into sleep/standby or it automatically goes into sleep/standby mode according to the idle time set in the Power settings it cannot be revived from sleep/standby mode without switching off and restarting.

The blue button becomes orange and flashes, indicating sleep/standby mode. When you press it again, it turns to blue and fan switches on. But there is no display and no response. The only option is to switch off and on.

Please help

Hi Everyone. I have an Edge 14, about 18 months old. While web serfing yesterday, the screen suddenly went full black. The red power light stayed on, but the laptop was completely unresponsive to ANY key that I tried. Tried to play a DVD-still no display and it did not sound like the DVD was spinning at all. Tried plugging into my TV with the HDMI output-no display on computer or TV. I was able to turn it off with the power button and found that the display would come on if I kept the laptop off for a while, but after a few minutes, the same thing would happen. The longer I keep the laptop off, the longer it will stay on before going black, but never more than 5 minutes or so. Taking some on-ling advice, I tried holding down the function button for 10 seconds and toggling F-7 on and off-neither worked at all. HELP!

Hello

I have an Tecra R950-16L for about 3 months now everything works fine. Now since a few days I have the problem, that sometimes, especially after I transported the notebook before, the internal display stays black after I power on the notebook.

I can blindly type my password and see from the disc activity that windows is starting probably, but no display is shown.

After I move the notebook around and shake it a bit it sometimes works again and the it stays working until I move the notebook again somewhere else (at least this is what seems to make the effect occur).

Seems to me like a loose connector to the display or something like that?

Is there any chance to repair this on my own?
I do need my notebook all the time and do not want to send it for repair if not 100% neccessary.

What do you suggest?

Michael Czierwitzki

Answer:Tecra R950-16L - Display stays dark on power up sometimes

>Seems to me like a loose connector to the display or something like that?

Yes, it looks like there is a loose connection or maybe something wrong with the lid sensor.

>Is there any chance to repair this on my own?
I don?t think so.
You would need to check what?s wrong exactly. After this has been checked, you would need to disassemble the notebook and this is not easy. Last but not least you would need the compatible parts to replace the affected hardware? I don?t think you can do that?

>I do need my notebook all the time and do not want to send it for repair if not 100% necessary.
Well, you could ask the Toshiba authorized service provider for details and how long such repair would take.

I have an Acer aspire E1-572 laptop with windows 10 version 1607 the latest to date. now the laptop did sleep in the previous version of windows when i close the lid but now it does not. I have checked the chipset driver, intel graphics driver and the management drivers and have refreshed them with the ones in acer support but no fix. The strage thing is that my laptop will sleep if i tell it to through start menu does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:My laptop wont sleep when closing the lid it stays...

Problem solved i think!!!  I went into power options ( I have already messed about in here plenty of times ) and tried something new. I went to advanced power settings and selected lid closed action, now it already says sleep. So i changed both to do nothing and applied this. I then tested and it turns my screen off when i close the lid so i know the mechanism that works with the sleep mode works! so i went back into power options and back into advanced to change the setting back to sleep. Once applied i tested again and WHALA it works my laptop now sleeps again.  There must be a bug issue with windows new build 1607 so if you are experiencing the same issue try this as this has worked for me. i will be testing for a week so i will update to say if this has been a permanent fix.If you need help with this message here i can assist you.

I have a Lenovoa X61 Tablet running Windows Vista.

When the power settings are set to "High Performance", no lock ups occur.

When the power settings are set to "Balanced" or "Power Saver", the computer will function for between 20 minutes and 2 hours. Somewhere in that time frame, here is what will eventually occur:

1.) I will be able to interact between the windows and move things around for a little while, but will be unable to save/open/close anything.
2.) Eventually the windows will stop moving and the screens will turn white, indicating they are "not responding"
3.) Eventually all I can do is move the mouse pointer and I am forced to hold down the power button to reboot.

If I run the resource monitor, I can predict when this is going to occur because:
1.) The "Disk" goes to 100% and stays there without ever going down
2.) All processes under "Disk" begin to shut down one by one until nothing is left. All the other categories seem to act totally normal.

If the laptop is on power save/balanced mode and is plugged in, this still occurs. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hello,
I have the Dell XPS 13, i5, with the Win 10 OS (64 bit) - just got it not long ago.
When I put the laptop on Sleep Mode (Either if I close the lid, or if I do it from the "Start Menu" and choose the "Sleep" option), the Laptop goes to sleep, and then wakes up immediately (after 2-3 seconds) with no apparent reason. If I immediately try to make it "sleep" again, it wakes up again after 2-3 seconds. It is like it refuses to sleep. The only way to fix it, is to restart the laptop, which sometimes fixes the problem, only until it happens again - and I notice too late when my battery is empty.
It deprives me of relying on the Sleep Mode, which is really 50% of the user experience on a SSD laptop.
How can I fix this?

Thank you

Without going into some kind of registry trying stuff way over my head, isn't there some kind of global setting that will allow me to save to my own machine!

Hello, I just got a lenovo carbon x1 and when the computer comes out of hibernation or sleep a symbol that says the caps lock is off appears on the screen for a few seconds. How do I stop it from telling me the caps lock is off after waking it up from sleep or hibernation? thanks

Answer:Caps lock on screen display after sleep or hibernation?

Hi Michaelalex17,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

It is a default setting which shows the ?Caps OFF? for a few seconds, because there is an option to show always or show for a few seconds, we cannot disable the individual on-screen popup display.
If you are looking for the setting. You can go to graphic properties to change, right click on the desktop and go to screen resolution ? Advance settings ? click on On-screen display tab and make the changes for your convenient.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best regards,

Hello Techspot users.
Ive had my laptop for about one year and 8 months and never had any problems until a week ago. I turned my laptop on and nothing came on on the display. I took the battery our and turned it on with just the AC cord and it worked fine. then i put the battery back on and it worked. After this it happened to me the next two days and that same trick worked. a couple days ago it didn't work. I turned my laptop on and it was the screen was black. i could see the HDD activity light working and the power light was on so i knew it wasn't the HDD. i tried the trick but nothing happened. i can see the backlight is on but the screen is black. i thought the video card could be it but when i plug the laptop to an external monitor it works fine. I checked device manager and there seems to be no problems. I thought the video cables could have been loose so i opened up the laptop bezel and they are connected correctly. Does anybody know what is up? Is my screen done or could it be the cables? I haven't opened up the rest of the laptop so it could be that they are damaged under the hood.

I have an hp pavilion dv4-1287cl laptop. core 2 duo processor. Intel Graphics. 4GBs of Ram. Running windows 7 pro.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 (433710U).  The External Display is a 30" Dell U3011 monitor connected to the Dock via DisplayPort. As Im dealing with another issue (another thread) the Bios is set for Discrete Graphics only as the Optimus mode currently has a bug which cannot drive this 2560x1600 resolution display.  Now that I have a workaround, I have another problem. When the power savings in Windows7/Power Manager turns the display off (for me its set for 10mins), If I come back 20mins later, shake the mouse, the Dell Display acts like its turning on (LED light turns on blue to indicate signal) and then message flashes on the screen from the Dell monitor stating that its going to sleep.  So now I have a Black display (monitor went back to sleep). I can open the Lid on the laptop (forgot to mention I dont dual display, I just use the 30" exclusively and close the lid on the laptop on the dock) the screen on that shows up. Close the lid again, the monitor does the same thing where it acts like its turning back on and just goes back to sleep.  Someone mentioned a similar problem where they believe the laptop is not sending the correct DPI to the monitor causing it to not be able to display the output.  They mentioned that doing a CTRL+ATL+DEL when the laptop lid is opened, and then closing it again works.  Thats works for me, but only once.  After that, if it sleeps, I have no monitor to use.  Only way to c... Answer:T420 - external Display doesnt wake from sleep (when power savings shuts display off)

hey Dixit, curious to know, let's say if you uninstall Power Manager and use windows built in power management; does the same issue occur ? also what happens if the external monitor is connected directly into the T420's display and not with the docking station ?

My boss wants to copy a powerpoint presentation to a disk (it would have to be a CD or DVD) and make it unreadable after a certain amount of time. Is this possible? If not, is it possible to burn the file to a disk and not allow it to be copied from that disk?

Answer:Can you save a file on a disk and make it unreadable after a certain amount of time?

This would be very difficult to do, and probably wouldn't work anyway for anyone savvy enough to reset the system clock.

But you can password-protect a CD.

This one claims time-limited access:

Hi everyone. Basically when the PC goes into sleep mode it often has issues coming out of it. For example when you press the keyboard or mouse it sometimes does not respond. You then proceed to hold down the power button but this doesn't do anything either forcing a hard power down to reboot.

Upon reboot the bios seems to have an issue requested on start up whether to edit settings or use default (F2) and continue. I do F2. PC goes on and stays "restarting windows" only to come up limping. Clock is back in 2004 and so forth requiring another reboot to get things back to normal which solves the problem.

Why is this occurring and should I just turn off all power save options which I prefer not to? Any advice is appreciated.

Answer:Issues with sleep/power save modes

Please post the make and model of your computer. Seems that your CMOS battery may be dead which will indicate the year being 2004.

For the sleep problem boot into your system follow these instructions how to delete the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) Windows 7 - Delete Hibernation File (hiberfil.sys) - Help Desk Geek

Answer:Why the display of laptop Satellite L300 stays white?

Hi

Why?
Who knows? what did you do that your screen is white?
My screen is not white? it shows everything properly?.

Does the same white screen appear on external monitor?
If yes, then this issue can be related to faulty graphic card, if no then your notebook?s display might be faulty?

My laptop doesn't start. Power light and charging are on, HDD LED also, but has black display.
If I hold F12 key during the start with my recovery disk in, I can hear CD running/searching but display stays black.
Seems to me as the boot (bios) is corrupted. Anyone can advice???

Answer:Booting the laptop fail - display stays black

Hi Lexab,

First try turning on the system without the battery on it.

You can start isolating the problem by connecting an external monitor on the PC, once cable is connected to the laptop Press FN+F5, if it transfered the image to the external monitor then its being caused by an LCD problem. But if it still does the samething after doing that, then it means that the system is not Posting at all and there is a big possibility that it can be a Motherboard related issue. Hope that this will somehow shed light to your problem. :)

So I built my computer like last week and I was trying it out Crysis Warhead on max. Then saw my temperature thing on my case and it said 43degrees celcius, and I thought, woah thats hot, and i opened my side board but when i did, my whole computer shut down. I think i might have tripped the motherboard 24pin wires some how and it lost power and everything went down. Then when i tried booting my computer again, my monitor says in powersave mode, please move mouse or something. i moved my mouse key board and everythign and even rebooted my computer several times. I've tried many things but it won't work. Im having someone look at it in a few days, but you guys might know whats going down.

I've tried rebooting countless times.
I've repositioned my ram.
I replaced my video card with my old one, plugged vga in nothing.
i tried my monitor on my lap top, monitor works. not the monitor's fault, though i hoped it was because its easier to replace that then a mobo or whatnot.
and sometimes, when i boot, it shuts off after like 5 seconds and re-boots it self.
My keyboard light and mouse lights are off. my fans and psu and cpu fan are on and my graphics card fan is on.
maybe its harddrive malfunction? >< i hope not. but i dont think so, the monitor doesn't even turn on!
so guys, im really stumped.

Have tried all the listed options. Checked and changed settings in Power settings. Enabled System unattedned sleep timout and set to couple of hours. Updated the display driver and bios to latest. These updates worked, but after a week or so problem would come back. All power profiles look correct and should not be triggerring the sleep time. They have also been changed. Ok,.. Here is my tail of wow,... I have 32bit windows 7 PC,.. 4 gig RAM, Intel Quad core,.. and it goes it and out of sleep no problem,.. it just runs for days without any problem, solid as a rock you might say.

Now exactly the same hardware with 64bit OS is another story,.. I am lucky if it runs for 30mins without BSOD, it just crashes mid typing.. and certainly if it goes to sleep or power save.

Each install is a fresh clean install on a newly formatted drive, so no previous OS to be found on disk.
I have run memtest x86 and that runs all night long,.. no problems..
All my drivers, ( as far as I can see ) are up to date..

I have run the BSOD utility to collect the required data, for the boffins to review
and attached is the TSF file,.. the perfmon report is in the zip file as a subdirectory,..
My thanks to you guys for looking at this,. as this sure baffles me.
May the force be with you!!

the computer goes to sleep if it stays idle for some time
this internal idle timer gets reset every time there is keypress or mouse movement
how do I make it ignore mouse movement, that is, I don't want the idle timer to reset even if I move the mouse
So if I don't press any key for 30 minutes, I want the computer to go to sleep even if I move the mouse during this time
how do I do it?
thank you

HP 6910p has power (even the fan comes on) but does not boot. When one or both ram chips are in, the power button lights up before promptly powering off. This repeats with no end. Whenever I take the 2 ram chips out, the power button lights up and stays on but the screen stays black.

The only other symbol that lights up and stays on with the black screen is the mute sound symbol. The cd drive starts up but eventually goes out. The lightning bolt symbol shines orange for a second then goes out. WiFi symbol doesn't glow at all.

Important notes: the laptop makes two short beeps at the beginning of both scenarios. It has no battery and runs via plug. It came on the other day after removing all power, taking one of the rams out for a minute and putting it back in. I was able to log in and even use the internet. However it shut off by itself after about 30 minutes and this trick hasn't ever worked since.

I have an X201 Tablet (3113-W4M) that came preloaded with Windows XP SP3.  I blew away the XP image and reloaded with Windows 7 Enterprise and obtained all Windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo website. The issue is that after the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernate *and* I plug in a USB mouse or USB mouse/keyboard combo, I am unable to lock, shutdown, restart, or hibernate the system.  Additionally, anything that invokes UAC fails to display.  If I look at Processes under Task Manager, I see where consent.exe is running (called when a UAC approval prompt should be displayed).  Sometimes it is running multiple times corresponding to multiple events that should have displayed the prompt (e.g. running RegEdit).  Turning off UAC is a workaround to this issue but does not address the root cause and does not address the lock/shutdown/etc. issue. After extensive troubleshooting that included 2 full OS reloads, process monitoring, and deep log reviews, I have narrowed my issue to the following steps: 1) Boot tablet with no USB mouse and/or keyboard attached2) Attach USB mouse and/or keyboard>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both function as expected.3) Hibernate tablet (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)4) Resume from hibernate (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both fail I discovered this as I move my system from work (Logitech S510 keyboard/mouse c... Hi, I'm using my Yoga 900 on the desktop for longer periods of time. When it awakes from sleep it does not always "remember" that it was last displaying on the external monitor. Sometimes I have no picture at all, sometimes I have the picture on the internal monitor. When I switch to external only with F10, it won't do that, so the external monitor (HP 24es) won't wake up. Up to now my only solution is to plug out and back in the Type C adapter (Apple 3x multi adapter). That's definitely not what I want to do several times a day. Thanks for any hint...!

Thanks for this forum!  I am having trouble out of a number of Dell OptiPlex 9010 AIO machines that are deployed on my network.  They are all running either Windows 10 Enterprise version 1507 (original release of Windows 10) or Windows 10 Enterprise version 1607 (Anniversary edition).  All 64-bit OS.
The issue is that even though I have configured the systems not to ever go into a sleep state, they are still doing it and when they do, the only way to wake them back up is to hold the power button and recycle.
These are older systems, so I am considering replacing them but I'd like to know if anyone has encountered this issue under this config.  I have tried different BIOS revisions including the latest and have tried different combinations of drivers as well.
Thanks for any advice and If there is additional information that I can provide that would be helpful, please let me know and I will respond.

Answer:Dell OptiPlex 9010 AIO - Power Save/Sleep Issues

Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup.
Enable USB Wake which is disabled by default. Be sure to save the change before exiting setup. That should allow mouse or keyboard to wake the PC from sleep.
And if you need even more control, go to the Power options screen in Windows, select the active power plan and change the settings for sleep and hibernation to Never, but set monitor and hard drive to turn off after a set time. And on the Advanced settings screen in the Power plan, turn Hybrid Sleep off and disable USB Selective Suspend.
And you may also have to go into Device Manager and expand the list under USB. Select each root hub and click its Power Management tab. On that screen uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off....". Do that for all root hubs. Then expand list under Human Interface Devices and uncheck that same box for any entry that has a power management tab.

I noticed if I run my finger over the touch pad buttons for volume etc they light up so im not sure whats wrong.

Hey guys, I really need some help here! My laptop is not turning on. The power light turns on for a few seconds but then it turns off again. The fan doesn't turn on either. I know it's not the battery because I switched the battery out with my brother;s and it's still not working. I also tried to just put it on the charger and it doesn't work then either! Of course my laptop is no longer in warranty so please help me out!!

Answer:Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

Hi E. Trader,
Welcome to the Community.
Remove any peripheral devices that are connected to the computer.
Please unplug the battery and the adaptor, press and hold power button for 10 seconds and then plugin the adaptor and turn on the computer. If you get light on the power button, we would be able to run a test on the computer to isolate the issue. Instructions on how to run the test are mentioned on the link below:
http://dell.to/i5zbDR
During the test you would get a screen with solid colors and that time please press “Y”. The test result should be an error code or beeps (if nothings come up on the screen).
If there is no light on the laptop, system board needs replacement.

If you have a PC monitor connect it to the laptop and see if you get a display on it.

Also check the laptop screen for a dim image, shining a light onto it may make it more visible.

What was wrong that made you replace the screen ?

Hello mate, You can change that with power manager. Open it in advanced mode and under your current power plan, you can see Event. Expand that for the option Power button you have 4 choices : Do nothing, sleep, shut down or hibernate. Choose the one you want. You can do that under windows as well. Go to Control panel>Hardware and sound>Power options. On the left you can see Choose what the power button do. Go there and change the setting.

I have 2 large computer screens and they are extended.

With Windows 7 I could watch the news in one window, be chatting on Skype in another window, be viewing pictures in another window, be shopping for products in another window, be reading reviews in another window, be sending emails in another window and be writing a letter in word and have my calculator running all at the same time.

I could cut and paste and drag and drop stuff all over the place.

Every time I fire up an app in windows 8 it takes up one full screen and I can?t see the other things I am doing.

My wife's Dell Desktop went into power save mode and won't recover. Black screen at all times (before and after entering Windows desktop). I've tried a different display and dvi cable - same result. I switched from DVI to Analog and it works fine. Do we agree it's almost certainly the display adapter? Thanks guys.

Answer:Display stuck in power save mode

Also, I haven't replaced a display adapter in YEARS. I'd love a recommendation for a replacement for the above card (Nvidia 7300LE). The system is a Dell Dimension DM061 (I think that translates to an E520) with a 300W power supply. Again, this is for my wife and we don't need a "high powered"? card. She has DirectX 11 on the system so I guess it would be nice if the card supports that. Thanks again.

I've just installed a "GateKeeper" (www.gkchain.com) which locks/unlocks the desktop based on my proximity to my desktop PC.

It works beautifully, but is a little odd when my display has gone into power saving mode whilst the desktop is locked... I approach the PC, and the desktop unlocks, and is ready for use, but the display stays blank as it is in power saving mode. I have to move the mouse (or press a key, perhaps) before I can see what I'm doing.

Is there some way to automatically bring the display out of power saving mode whenever there's a transition from locked to unlocked? I suspect this won't be possible, as there's probably no API for the power-saving mechanism. I certainly can't find any settings in power management that would control this behaviour.

Answer:Tying the display power settings with the lock/unlock functions.

No settings in GateKeeper? You can ask them if no one here knows.

Hello experts, I do hope you can help me once again. I am completely confused by this issue and am unsure how to even proceed.

To start, as the title says the screen saver and the Turn off Monitor option do not seem to be playing along well. They work just fine independently however, i usually let the screen saver kick in at 5 minutes and the monitor turn off after 10 minutes. What is happening although, the screensaver kicks in just fine, and when the monitor timer expires, they turn off as needed but then are suddenly interrupted and cancels both the screen saver and the monitor turn off.

After researching what I could, (google has not been friendly in this case), I have tried the wireless mouse fix and the issue continued, I have connected a wired mouse, same result. After many reboots and trial and errors, I have reached a desperate state here because I hate when my monitors run all day when I am not at home.

Thank you all for reading and reaching out to help. Any other information I can provide, I will do so as needed.

Thanks!

This is a really weird issue and I have no idea how to fix it. Tried everything! When on outlet power, my Thinkpad X1 will not go to sleep teh first time I tell it to, be it by clicking on the Windows option for it or closing the lid. What it does is turn on the MUTE button light, shut off and lock the screen. That is all. The computer remains on even if the lid is closed (not a great thing). If I "wake" it up from this state and try to sleep again, it now works properly. This doens't happen when on battery, which makes it even more odd. I tried updating the Power Manager a gazillion times, all latest versions do this. Greetings, and thank you for reading this thread.

As the title states, my computer will turn off the display or go to sleep (not sure of correct terminology) when I go idle for a short period of time. For instance, I get up to get a glass of water and when I come back, the screensaver is up and I need to re-enter my password. This problem arose immediately after the installing of windows 10 on my PC (upgraded from Windows 8.1 if that helps).

I have already gone to control panel ~> power options but the thing is, even though I've already done that and set the options to "Never turn off display", "Never go to sleep" as shown in the screenshot, my PC still turns off display/sleeps after a short amount of time. Lastly, I hope I posted this in the right section and hope that someone can solve my problem.

I have my W520 in a dock with an external monitor. The display is configured to Extend - the external monitor is primary, and the desktop extends onto the W520 screen. I don't have a screen saver. I turn off the display after 30 minutes of inactivity. Until recently both the laptop and monitor screens would turn off after 30 minutes, and then both resume when I moved the mouse or pressed a key. Recently, the system has started changing to "Projector Only" when the display turns off. After resuming from power save mode, only the external monitor activates, and the W520 screen is disabled. I have to use Fn-F6 to switch back to "Extend" to re-activate the laptop screen. I have rebooted and re-saved the power plan. Why has this happened, and how do I fix it?

Hi, timg11

I have a few questions so that I may gain a better grasp of this issue:

1) What is your machine type and model? You can find this information on the bottom of your machine. It should be in format XXXX-XXX.
2) What is your operating system?
3) Does this issue occur is the computer is not in the docking station? (Please try if you haven't already).

Thanks in advance,Adam

My KB was plugged into the PS2 port. After I took out the PS2 adapter and plugged the cable into a USB port the problem was fixed.

Hope it helps someone.

Hello
I know this may seem like a trivial matter but since rebuildng my computer with a new case and motherboard the num lock LED on the keyboard stays lit when I turn off the computer, if i remove the power cord it goes out
My assumption is that some residual power is still feeding the keyboard, but why? Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Bigbear

Answer:Num Lock LED stays illuminated

Many new computers have settings in the BIOS that allow the computer to be turned on by an event; its usually called "Wake-On ..." and it could be for mouse, keyboard, modem, lan, etc activity. Check in the BIOS setup for such settings; they're usually found under Power Options.

Hi there. Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have been experimenting with changing the Lock Screen. I know how to change it manually. The point is, I put the setting to 'Play slide show'. I even told the system to use a picture folder. Maybe I am misunderstanding. I was expecting the lock screen to be different each time. But no change. I even installed Lock Pic. But I noticed it's working with the actual windows settings. It just gives me a different choice of pictures. So what am I doing wrong?

Answer:Lock Screen stays the same.

Hello gallicbear,

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens. One is set by the user that is displayed only when they are signed in. The other is the default Lock screen image that is displayed when there are no users signed in.

The lock screen slide show only works on your lock screen when you are still signed in, and not the default one.

Hey guys I just got a new computer... it came with a really nice looking keyboard too...

The only problem is that the keyboard has this button that puts my computer in a power saving mode. Normally it wouldn't bother me but it's placed in the worst position imaginable (basically right next to the ~ key). I've accidently hit it a couple times while playing games and I don't want to do it again.

Is there any option in Windows Vista Home Premium to stop it? Or a keyboard option to stop it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Disabling "sleep/power save" key on Keyboard

Start>Control Panel>Power Options

On your present plan, click "change plan settings". Then click "change advanced power settings". Expand "power buttons and lid". Click "sleep button action". Change this to "do nothing"

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that is out of warranty. I bought it in 2013.  With that out o' the way, my Lenovo Yoga 13's screen stays black even when the power is on...I see no Lenovo logo or anything AND the laptop keeps restarting on its own, so it is stuck in restart mode, with the screen staying black the whole time.  This laptop has been doing this (black screen even though power is on and shuts off and restarts on its own) for about 6 months now....(Jan 2017-June 3, 2017 as of this writing). This laptop works WHEN IT WANTS TO EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT NOT OFTEN.  I turned the laptop on now, and I'm typing on it now, **BUT when it doesn't work, which is most of the time**, it shows a black screen (I see nothing on the screen) even with the power on and constantly restarts on its own. Is this hardware issue a motherboard problem or a screen issue specifically? Specifically, is it the motherboard that needs to be fixed on this Yoga 13 or is it a screen issue? If it's a motherboard issue that needs to be fixed, how much would it cost? Or If it's a screen issue, how much would that cost to fix? Any help on this is much needed!

Answer:**Yoga 13: Laptop screen stays black when power is ON, & fan makes noise, but nothing on screen**

Hello Complex1Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Sounds like this will be an issue with the HDD or MOBO instead of the Display I believe.
Try running an LSC scan, it may be able to detect a hardware issue on the unit.
1. Please click on the following link2. Under the section ?Download? select the relevant Hyperlink dependant on whether your Lenovo is running Windows 7/8/8.1 32 bit or 64 bit. 3. When prompted, select save and browse to a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files. 4. Navigate to the folder where you saved the installation file, lscsetup_x86_26001.exe. 5. Double-click the installation file icon to start the installation. 6. Follow the onscreen instructions via the installation wizard that will install Lenovo Solution Centre on your system. 7. Once installed you will have a ?Lenovo Solution Centre? icon on your desktop please click to open this. 8. Once solution center is opened please select ?Checkup? then ?Hardware Scan? and ?Full Scan? 9. This will take up to 20 minutes, see if this can find any errors.

This has been a problem for the last couple of months.
If i 1. close the lid or 2. go to the so called "start" menu and hit sleep, about half the time I listen and hear that my laptop has restarted itself. If i keep the lid open and watch, it clearly restarts, and sometimes it brings me to that screen that says, windows has not started properly and it gives me the option to run normally or change to safe mode. i can run normally and everything is fine.
PLEASE do not tell me to go to power options because VISTA FAILS is not an option and my power options are just fine and do not have to do with this. I would like an intelligent answer. Thanks.

Hello everyone. So since a few days my laptop has been acting strangely. Every time my laptop goes to sleep or I close the lid it restarts when I press a key or open the lid again. I have no idea what is triggering this. I tried resetting my laptop, but every time I do so my laptop restarts about half way through. I have looked at several settings like at the power options but nothing has worked so far. The way laptop restarts is different too. The ASUS logo appears twice and it takes a lot longer to restart than normal. I have an ASUS N551JB running Windows 10. I don't know what to do now, I have looked at several forums but nothing has worked so far. If anyone could help that would be great!

Answer:Laptop restarts every time it wakes up from sleep

What do you mean by "Resetting may laptop"?

Did this machine come with Windows 10 or was it upgraded to it?

When I place my laptop into sleep (either from the button or closing the lid), the screen goes dark and then it basically locks up.

If it's on battery the battery will last a short time (as if it was on) and then it dies. Typically, if it's on AC, I end up having to hold down the power button to kill it and then reboot.

HOWEVER. The other day it was on AC and I realized that it's just taking a VERY LONG time to get to sleep, several hours.

The OS reports that my webcam driver may be causing it to sleep slowly, but killing that driver seems to have no affect.

This is an older Dell 1720, which shipped with Vista, and technically doesn't support W7. But everything was working fine until a few weeks ago. Also, I am now using an SSD HD (so hibernate mode is disabled).

I tried killing non-essential services (and then more) and it still has the issue.

Any idea how to debug this? Is there a way to log what might be holding it up?

Answer:Laptop takes a long time to sleep

Yes, of course .

1. Download and install the Windows Performance Toolkit as instructed
2. Run the xbootmgr command that corresponds to "Standby+Resume" to generate an .etl trace
3. Once the test completes (you have to let it finish, so if it takes hours to actually sleep, you need to let that happen) and the system resumes and finishes the test, you can compress the resulting .etl file and upload it somewhere for us to download and review.

My wifes Evesham Vale Voyager 5500 laptop has gone on strike. It refuses to give any sort of screen display, though the fan is on, and various LEDs are on. It was last used and was misbehaving with several basic functions starting to play up. It was during this that it decided it had had enough and now sits and hums, only making fan noises. I recently installed an extra 256 ram in its expansion slot..... a friend suggested that bad memory can make the screen pack in, so I've tried it with only the on board memory....no change.I think this machine was made by Mitac as the 7521. It has XP professional on, ad has run happily using a Dlink card. It has a 700 Celeron or so, and a 10 gig HDD.Any bright ideas?Terry

Answer:Laptop thats gone to sleep....no screen display!

Try pressing the Fn button + F8, dont know the exact combination for your laptop but thats what it is for dell. This allows you to use the laptop with external screens for presentations etc. How old is the laptop, it could be that the backlight in the monitor has gone.

Recently I bought a new mechanical keyboard to replace my old one. Everything was working fine but one day I bumped the CAPS lock and couldn't turn it off. After playing around I found that it toggled off when shift was pressed. So naturally I contacted the manufacturer's support and they gladly tried to help. after uninstalling the drivers and configuring software (it's a programmable keyboard) nothing worked. When plugged into another computer the CAPS lock worked fine, and when at the user log in screen on start up (before logging in) it works fine. Skipping ahead, today I plugged in my old keyboard and found the problem was also affecting this one as well. I assume it's something other than driver problems now. Does anyone know what the cause of this problem could be and how to fix it?

Answer:CAPS Lock Stays On Unless Shift is Pressed

According to Keyboard shortcuts for Windows, pressing the Win logo + s should toggle the caps lock on and off; you might try that. You can also open the "on-screen keyboard" and try to toggle the caps lock that way. Maybe one of those will get it out of the state that it is in.... although I've never seen such a state hang around after a reboot.

I have a Benq FP7IE+ monitor that has suddenly stopped working. Here's the breakdown:

-when you turn the monitor on when hooked to a computer it will sometimes show the display for a brief moment (ie. showed HP booting screen at startup) and than stops displaying, but the blue light stays on the unit as if it is receiving a display. Other times it will display nothing at all, but the blue light stays on.

-with the blue light on if you attempt to press any of the menu buttons on the monitor itself again nothing is displayed.

-I don't believe that it's a refresh rate or driver issue even though I reinstalled the driver and hooked the monitor to PC running in safe mode and still no display (even though the blue light stays on).

-not the VGA cable, tried another, same result.

-hooked monitor to PC with the identical monitor working on it, same result, no display.

-if you unplug the power cord from the monitor and then plug back in and power back on it will always show the "Benq - Energy Star Qualified Monitor" screen as bright as ever, but then nothing is display even though blue light stays on.

-tried monitor on 3 different computers, no display on any of them.

Any idea what might be causing this? I apologize for being so long winded, but I wanted to include as many details as possible.

Answer:LCD monitor display shows for a second and than nothing (but display light stays on)

Newbie!
I am re-opening the thread on Bluetooth Mouse loss when coming out of power save as I cannot find any solution to this, or mention of the situation I have!
I have a Toshiba Sat Pro running Vista Home Premium 32bit with Toshiba Bluetooth Stack, Logitech 5000 mouse & keyboard.
This problem has only recently started & must be the result of a MS security download!
When I come out of power save I noticed that my Bluetooth icon was static, when I checked the Bluetooth settings I found it was showing Bluetooth as enabled, I then set it to disable & then re-enabled straight away and got my connection back, (this also affects the keyboard!)
Maybe this info will generate an idea regarding the problem.

I would like to know how to keep the XPS 15 9550 from resizing open windows at various events, such as turning off the display after a few minutes of inactivity, lid close, going to sleep/hibernate, when changing from AC to battery and vice versa...
I would also like to keep windows open on the external display in case it disconnects for a while, the way I had it set up on my previous Lenovo laptop. Currently they are all moved to the primary window in case of a disconnect - and not only an actual disconnect but also upon entering or waking from sleep etc. It is a pain having to redistribute 10+ windows back to the external display...

Hi, I recently let my friend borrow my Lenovo V570 laptop while I was out of town because he wanted to fix the keyboard which did not work at all. The keyboard was removed and reinstalled with a new one but a worse problem was created. The power button cable was removed and the plastic piece that locks it was lost. I cannot afford to pay for computer repair or a new motherboard, I know its still good since the battery light is on and charges when plugged in.

Now I cannot turn on my laptop at all and I need it for school ASAP. I read through the maintenance manual many times for this laptop but it does not say exactly what each one of these inputs are for. So my plan was to remove the plastic lock from the cable for the touchpad. At this point I dont care if the keyboard or touchpad works (I will use USB keyboard and mouse) I just need to be able to power it on and working USB ports.
So I unplugged the plastic lock from the input I believe was the touchpad and tried to install it in the power button cable input since it looks like the same size. Problem is it is very small and difficult to work with and when I tried to install it I slightly bent one of the pins (shown in photos below.

If I carefully straighten out the pin on the cable input and try it again (any tips would be appreciated in doing this) do you think the plastic lock I removed will fit in the power button cable input? Also are these plastic lock pieces hard to find if I need a replacement?

Also does anybody k... Read more

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I was unable to find a similar thread after searching for a bit. I have an Aspire S7-392 running Windows 8 Enterprise. For some reason, every time I plug the power supply into the laptop, the laptop goes to sleep.  I can easily wake it back up by hitting the enter key, but this sleeping causes things like my VPN and RDP connections to all blow up. The battery seems to be in great shape.  I can run for hours with no AC adapter, and when plugged in the AC adapter charges the laptop just fine.  It can run for days or weeks with the AC adapter plugged in, and there are no issues with the transition when I unplug the AC adapter from the laptop (besides hitting the poorly located power button on occasion!). I have just dealt with it for the past year or so, but find myself being a bit more mobile these days, and each time I get up to take the laptop somewhere, I know I'll only have as long as the battery will take me before I have to plug it in and it goes to sleep on me, wrecking all of my in progress remote VPN and RDP sessions. Anyone have any suggestions of things I can try? Thanks,-Garrett

Answer:Aspire S7-392 - Laptop goes to sleep when power su...

So I got frustrated by this a bit more today and decided to experiment with it a bit. It turns out it has nothing to do with the transition from battery power to the AC adapter.  The issue is that the physical case of the laptop itself is sensitive to pressure, thus causing the same outcome as hitting the power button located next to it. I pulled the AC adapter completely out of the equation and just applied slight pressure with my finger to the AC adapter port, and sure enough, it goes to sleep.  Conversely, I can plug in the AC adapter very slowly and carefully, ensuring that no pressure is applied to the surrounding plastic case and it does not gp to sleep. So, while I'm glad I have it figured out now, and know how to work around it, I suspect there is really nothing that can be done to fix this.  It just sounds like a design flaw in having the power button located where it is.  Ugh!

First off I'd like to say that I didn't really know where to post this and the last time I googled a similar result it was posted here, and it could potentially be a driver problem I guess, so please excuse me if this is the wrong section. I found these forums while searching the answer to my problem and the people seemed generous and helpful so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Okay so I've googled and googled for hours to absolutely no avail, so I've tried everything I could think of without asking myself so here goes.

Let me start by stating my specific problem. My laptop will not wake up from sleep without hitting the power button. This means that my external keyboard, external mouse, touchpad, nor built in keyboard can wake it up. My old laptop also running Windows 7 did not have this problem btw. It is quite the annoyance because when I am at home I use my laptop at a desk with an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
Just bought this new laptop for graduation. It's a RF711-S02 by Samsung. I'll state some of the specs that could possibly be causing my problem. Processor is an Intel i7 2630qm, nVidia gt540m graphics card (which uses optimus technology, so when that's not on it uses Intel HD 3000), Windows 7 x64. If anything else is needed or relevant, just ask.

I have tried everything I could possibly find over several days and several hours in each day. I've tried the USBBIOSX stuff for the registry, updating all of my drivers, enabling my keyboard to wak... Read more

Answer:Laptop Won't Come Out of Sleep W/O Power Button

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

This workaround did the trick in Windows Vista so I'll post the link to see if it's of any help to you, it may work with Win 7: Disable Hybrid Sleep Mode in Windows Vista - How-To Geek

Have you tried tweaking your power plans, or switching them off, even? Disable Power Management on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Another workaround that has worked for my wife's laptop is to unplug the power cord, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain the internal capacitors then insert the battery and restart.

Do you have Hibernation on your laptop? If so, you might want to disable it and just use Sleep.
