Preferred Solution: Ideapad z500 keyboard backlight stopped working.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Ideapad z500 keyboard backlight stopped working.

SoapForBrains wrote:Can someone help, please. From an off condition, powering up the unit should cause the backlight to switch on and then off. This is an indication that the backlight is fine. Pressing Fn + Spacebar should toggle on/off the keyboard. If you cannot obtain the indicated observations then probably you need to replace the keyboard. Try contacting Lenovo and inquire about it.

The hard drive died so I bought and installed an SSD into the system, fresh install of Windows 10 64bit. I have managed to find the chipset and other basic drivers but have no ability to turn the backlight of the keyboard on or adjust the screen brightness. I believe the brightness of the screen can be resolved by rolling back to a previous intel HD driver however no matter what I have tried cannot get the backlight of the keyboard to function. Any assisstance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Thanks for you help and comments in advance! System information: OS: Windows 10Device: only the Standard PS/2 device is listed in the device manager which is stange because there use to be a HID also listed under keyboard Keyboard driver version number/date: 10.0.10586.0  (21/06/2006)  I have upgraded to windows 10 and since the doing so, I have encountered several problems (scanner not working, dimmed monitor-resolved, F7 Aiprlane mode button not working - resolved) and now the dreadded keyboard backlight is not working (it definitely worked before). The NumLock and CapsLock work fine and they do light up. I have tried the following:  Fn+Spacebar - does not work Bios upgrade-  does not work and no errors detected during scan in CMD (somone posted a string in another post to do this) Window updates driver updates - still does not work Installed latest Lenovo energy Management - Still does not work Question. Are the backlights for the NumLock and CapsLock on the same ribbon as the main backlight. Answer:Ideapad Z500 Keyboard back light - stopped working after Windows 10 upgrade

Update: I purchased a genuine second hand keyboard online fo £22.00 and the backlight is working perfectly. A good way to test the functionaility of your keyboard is to see if the light comes on during the boot-up. If it does not then it is either a loose connection or a faulty keyboard. It is worth opening up the keyboarg to see if there is a loose connection...see this video on how to do it, it very simple and will take you less than 5 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lK4mKT_7gA If the connection are ok and you still do not see the back light working during the boot up, then I am afraid to say that you have a faulty keyboard. Don't waste you time like I did trying to get it to work...get a replacement!

Hi all,To be honest I`m quite desperate as I am not in my home country where I bought it anymore 12 days ago, and I would hate to wreck the warranty, so I truly hope someone could help me here.I bought the non touch version of it 12 days ago in Italy, downgraded to win7 and had some crazy issues with the standby, so I removed the Intel power management and all went well. The only issue that lasted was the occasional flickering of the monitor: it went black randomly for a microsecond like 2 or 3 times a day. Not even everyday. So I thought nothing of it.Yesterday I played for hours without the slightest issue. Today I turned it down after browsing the Internet on battery and plugged it in. After a few hours I unplugged it and turned it on, there was ni backlight in the monitor.Turned it off, plugged and it didnt start. Plugged it off and after pressing the power on button a few times it started, without backlight. Without the light, the computer is basically not usable. So I bought a brand new laptop for a long stay away from home, and it left me in the cold not even two weeks after I bought it...Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

Good day! A few days ago has turned off keyboards backlight of lenovo Z500. I tried to reboot the laptop, but backlight still doesn't work as before by pressing FN+Space buttons. I hope this is a software bug and I could solve it without help of service center. But I can't solve it without your help, as the website and the Internet has no effect, and I have no desire to reinstall the system because of backlight. Maybe someone knows how to make it work again?

Answer:backlight on keyboard for z500 touch not working

hi Gadi621,

Welcome to the Forums.

I'm not seing any changelog related to any keyboard backlight changee from the BIOS readme.txt file so I think it's unlikely that updating the BIOS is the cause of the problem.

Just to check, when you power up the machine, do you see the keyboard backlight turning on?

Ideally, for the backlit to work, the following must be met:
1. A backlit-type keyboard must be installe (you can tell if the keyboard has backlights when there's a "crown" like icon on the space bar.
    - Link to picture
2. The keyboard ribbon & power cable (for backlit) must be properly connected to the motherboard
    - Link to picture
    - Link to picture

If one of the following is not met, the backlight feature won't work.

Hi all, I've had my Lenovo ideaPad Z500 Touch for 2 years already, and this is the first time my KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT has stopped working. I am using Windows 8.1 (always updated) on a 64-bit OS. There has been no trauma to the device prior to the disfunction, however I did recently install CCleaner to my laptop to speed up the starting time (which may or may not have anything to do with the disfunction, but I am bookmarking it as a possibility since before installation my keyboard backlight was working just fine). Around the same time I also recently updatedWindows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 x64 Edition - March 2015 (KB890830) upon recommendation from Windows Update, prior to which there was also nothing wrong with my keyboard backlight. (1) I have tried the Fn+SpaceBar option (as I usually do to toggle on/off when I'm doing work), but the backlight still does not turn on.(2) I have tried reinstalling Lenovo Energy Management (as has been recommended in previous posts), but it still does not work even after restarting. Since the last post on this was some time ago (last one on 2nd January 2014 with solutions that do not work for me), I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me on this issue. Thank you so much,

I got a new Ideapad y550 a few weeks ago, but today after I had it in sleep mode for a few minutes and tried to turn it on again, the backlight is not working at all.  The only way to see the screen at all is to have it in sunlight.   I've read some websites about people having problems adjusting the briteness of it but not having it stop working completely even in the bios, so if anyone knows how to fix it without sending it in to lenovo or has had this problem before, that would be great.

Hi Guys,

I am a member of the sevenforums and currently have a win8 laptop so thought I'd sign up here (seems to be the same people behind both forums).

I'm having a little trouble and would really appreciate some feedback.

My Lenovo ideapad z500 had 2 keys (K and I) that stopped working (they worked on the touchscreen) and then after that the delete, 8, and arrow keys topped working. Not sure why.

Before I get the keyboard replaced I'm wondering if it could be something else? There's no water damage and I haven't dropped it so I'm confused. I was told it has to be water damage but maybe 1 drop from the condensation on a glass of water is all I can think that may have affected it.

Would be great for some input on this issue.

Thanks!

Answer:Laptop Keys Stopped working - Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Win8

I was told it has to be water damage

Not true. In fact, water in the keyboard normally does not cause permanent damage. That is, once the water dries, all works again - most of the time. But that does depend on many variables - type of keyboard membrane, how much water, if just water (no sugars or cream, for example), and how much dust, dirt, oily hair/dander, cigarette smoke, cookie crumbs, etc. are under the keys when the water was spilled. The greater damage generally comes when the water works it way through the keyboard and into the computer's electronics.

I would try a regular PC keyboard first to see what happens. If all the keys work properly with a standard USB keyboard, then you can be pretty certain it is the notebook keyboard at fault, and not something more serious.

Answer:My keyboard backlight stopped working

hi baborakj,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

As far as I know, Fn + Space is the combination to turn on/off the keyboard backlight.
And the keyboard backlight light up right away during POST as a check.

This is from a different model but it works the same with te Keyboard backlight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ck1lAu5sPc

If the Backlight does not flash or something during POST it may be having Hardware issue.
You may contact Lenovo Technical Support or you can follow this guide on reseating the Keyboard.

Best Regards

Hello. I've had my laptop for under a week and the backlight for my keyboard has stopped working. I've not been able to find anything to help me with this... is there a simple switch to turn it on and off, or am I missing something?

Thanks
Alan

Answer:The backlight on my keyboard has stopped working

I don?t know which notebook model do you have and which operating system do you use but, generally speaking you can use FN+Z key combination to enable or disable keyboard backlight.

Check it out.

If you use Win7 open Toshiba Assist > Optimize > Toshiba Hardware settings and there you will find options for keyboard backlight.

If you use Win8 open Toshiba Desktop assist > Function key and there you will find option for it.

Check it out.
Post which notebook model and OS do you use.

Hello guys, I bought my Lenovo Y570 almost 7 months ago, everything was working fantastically well (software and hardware) until last night. I opened up my laptop, turned it on, and waited like a min or so, I heard Windows booting... But the screen simply wont show me anything, only a black screen. The backlight works, and if I press Fn + F2 the backlight will turn off and on. I've tried the taking off the battery and waiting 30 seconds trick but it doesn't work... The laptop boots perfectly, and the rest of the hardware is in perfect condition (integrated keyboard, fan, usb ports, and so on), even my Windows Home Basic. I live in Venezuela, so I apologize for my poor English since it's not my first language. Thank you very much beforehand.

My keyboard backlight has stopped working. The hard-drive in my 3-year-old XPS 15 died, so I had it replaced with a new SS drive. My tech reinstalled Windows 10 and I reinstalled all of my software (AutoCad, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc.). Fortunately, I had all my files backed-up to an external hard-drive and restored them to the new SS hard-drive.
I installed Dell Command Update. I open Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and then Dell Keyboard Backlight Settings.......I can change the timing of the backlight, but cannot change the backlight brightness slider. It is currently set at the lowest setting, but it will not move to a higher setting. So, I do not have any keyboard backlight at all. I suspect that there is a problem elsewhere.....something is not switched on or there is a missing update? I've spent hours trying to chase this down without success. Any ideas?
Thank You!

Answer:Keyboard Backlight stopped working XPS 15 L502X

Does the keyboard flash ON when the system is booted (if it does not, you have a hardware problem).
If it DOES flash on at boot time, was the system running windows 10 prior to the drive failure - and if so, did the backlight work?  If it was running an earlier version of Windows, note that Dell isn't supporting Windows 10 on this model - there may not be a driver for the backlight under Windows 10.
If it was running correctly under Windows 10 with the backlight on, have you installed the chipset and other drivers?

My keyboard backlight was working fine but then one day it just stopped.
I've pushed f10 and fn + f10 doesn't give any feedback

I've gone to the Windows mobility center and made sure things are fine there but still no feedback.
When i push the f10 key the setting in windows mobility center changes but it shows no light on the keyboard

But the CAPS LOCK Light and back light works
Apart from that nothing else

Tried restarting also no feedback from the lights
Also could it have been a recent update that might've caused this?
Is there a driver for this?

Please Help

Answer:Keyboard Backlight Stopped working Dell Inspiron 7000 13

Does the keyboard backlight come on when the system is powered up?  If it does, you may have a software issue.
If it does not, you have a hardware problem.
First thing to check is that the backlight cable is firmly connected to the system board (this will require removing the keyboard to check).

Hi all, as per title, I bought 13 days ago a new z500 in Italy and moved here for studying. Suddendly the monitor light died. I cannot turn it on at all. Most probably is a cable doing faux contact or whatever. Is there anyway I can use the warranty or not void my warranty getting it repaired? I cannot afford not to have a computer for the duration of my stay, and thats why I bought a new laptop! It should be covered by the international warranty, but of course it looks like there is no local drop point. Any idea/mail address/whatever? Thanks.

My ideadpad keyboard stopped working again using Windows 8.1.  I did a Windows 8.1 reset yesterday and it seemed to be working but today it stopped working again.  It works at the login screen but some software is preventing it maybe the free Comodo firewall or Avast 8.  I can't uninstall Avast or Comodo in safe mode because it is says to uninstall in normal mode but I can't type in the Start screen to bring up control panel. Whenever I log out it gets stuck on the Lenovo Energy Manager.  Should I keep this program or can I uninstall it?

Good morning,  a few hours ago I accidentally spilled some water on the keyboard of my Lenovo Z500 Touch. The PC was going with battery only, not connected with adapter. I cleaned the water immediately. I turned it off, only turned it on a couple of times to see if everything was ok. Now (about 6 hours from the accident) most keys of the keyboard do not work. I turned the pc upside down, hope it is only some water left within the keys and now I'm waiting that the water dries.  any other advice? Thank you

Hi all, I have an issue with my Lenovo Z500 touch. The USB 3.0 port on the left is not working. When I attach an external HDD, the HDD light is on, so it is powered, it is not seen by my pc.I have looked in the Device Manager and there's an error in the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller. It says that the device cannot start. Tried to udate the driver, but it says that the driver is up to date. I have Windows 8.1. The other 2 USB 2.0 ports work fine. Any idea? Could be a driver problem? Here is the event in the Device manager: Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&SUBSYS_397717AA&REV_04\3&11583659&0&A0 had a problem starting.Driver Name: usbxhci.inf Thank you in advance. Michele

For as long as I can remember my backlight on my lenovo p500 hasnt worked. I do know it has one and did work at one point. I have also read that most people who also have this problem will at least get it to turn on on boot but mine doesnt even fo that and they also say that the other Fn key combos dont work but mine do. So my question is is there any other way to turn it on to test it  for hardware problems and is there some software fix I can do to make it work if its not hardware?

In particular I'm not able to connect my laptop to my bravia TV trough Miracast. I have tried with another laptop HP (with Win 10 as well) older than my Z500 and I was able to stream my laptop monitor to the television without any problem. I have already checked the following:- last driver available is installed for the wireless adpater;- last driver available is installed for the video card Intel HD Graphics 4000;- I have checked on DXdiag.txt file system information that Miracast is supported by the laptop graphic adapter. I tried several times to connect the laptop to the TV but every attempt was uncessfull... I don't know what else to check... can anybody help me to solve the problem Thanks in avdance for the support.

Hi, it appears that the elan mouse pad on my ideapad Z500 is not working. The only way I can use it is by plugging in an external mouse via USB. I've tried restarting the laptop several times but doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Please advise?

Answer:Ideapad Z500 ELAN mouse pad not working

hi chazchenko,

Welcome to the Forums.

You didn't mention the OS that you're using but if the machine came preloaded with Windows 8, can you try the following:
1. Press the Windows key? +R and type devmgmt.msc. On the Device Manager, navigate to the Mice and other pointing devices and ensure that the ELAN touchpad is present and is not disabled (uninstall it if necessary to refresh the device). Also, check if the Rollback Driver is clickable to isolate a faulty driver.

2. Hold the Shift key while doing a restart to boot into the Advanced Startup Options or press the OneKey Recovery button while the computer is turned off to boot into the System Recovery Options and from here, check if the internal mouse if it's working.

If the touchpad still doesn't work then there's likely an imminent failure on the touchpad. If you're no longer in warranty, you can try to open it up and remove and reinsert the Touchpad cable inplace and observe.

If you're still under warranty then I recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk for service.

Hi.I have a laptop with windows 8.1. The problem is out of my 3 USB ports (2 USB2.0 and 1 USB 3.0) USB 3.0 does not work at all. When i try to plugin any device like a Pendrive it dosent read, if I insert a cooler it gives no power. I think it may be a hardware problem but in the device managerthere is 1 USB Root HUB(xHCI) which i think is for my 3.0, however some tabs seems to be missing like Power, Advanced.

Lenovo gave me the worst customer service and their computers suck, this is the first time I bought one of them and will be the last.

I found a few threads with issues similar to mine but not quite the same so I am starting a new one.  Yesterday the display backlight on my newish T540P would not come on after the computer had been in sleep mode for just under a day.  An external VGA display works without issue and is allowing me to use the computer for now. The screen is FHD without discrete graphics.  I have updated, then uninstalled, then reinstalled (with the help of a flashlight pointed at the screen) my Intel HD 4600 Graphics driver and so far no dice.  The currently installed driver version is 10.18.10.3412.  The other threads I found seemed to involve problems with systems that also had nvidia graphics installed or other computer models. Does this sound like a software issue or did my inverter die after one month of use?  Any help will be appreciated. EDIT:  Suppose I should mention I am running Windows 8.1.

Alright so first things first, this is probably my fault. A couple days ago the last working usb port I had stopped working, so I could no longer use my mouse. I did some research and decided to take apart my computer to get a look at the usb. After I had finished when I turned my computer on the backlight of my keyboard would no longer work. I followed the steps in the hardware manual when taking apart my computer and I reconnected everything, I think, when putting it back together. The only thing that has changed are a few of the plastic snaps that hold it toghether broke when removing the keyboard cover. Please don't tell me to try Fn+space... I've tried. I think I've determined that it is the smaller cabble going from the keyboard to the system that affects the lights and I spent half an hour making sure it was secure. Please help me, actual need the backlight because most of the work I do, I do in the dark. Thank you

Hello, my girlfriend got a L430 (2464-A26) which got a keyboard with the backlight symbol on the space key. But pressing it does not light the keyboard - neither in BIOS/Linux or Windows 7. I found this Lenovo blog entry: Q: With all the excitement over the design changes, do you think anyone noticed that you added the backlight option? I?m convinced no one knows it?s there. A: I hope so, it's a great feature. We designed Fn+Space as the trigger to enable and adjust the keyboard backlight.  If there is a light icon on your space bar, you have the backlight option.  I use mine all the time. So is the keyboard backlight broken? Thanks for your help!

Answer:[L430] Keyboard backlight not working

The L series has no keyboard backlight. The FN + space bar does nothing, because there is no backlight. You also cant install a keyboard with backlight, the backlight won“t work (die Hardware kann das Backlight nicht anprechen, da man dies auf BIOS Level nicht eingebaut hat.).

Hi Everyone, A few months ago I updated the HDD in my ThinkPad Z500T to an SSD. The laptop was running Windows 10, so I reinstalled that after changing the hard drive. Since changing the hard drive, the backlight on my keyboard no longer seems to work. I've ensured that the ribbon cable which connects the keyboard is correctly located (which it is) by removing the keyboard to check, but also by testing out other fn-<key> combinations. All other combinations work, other that fn+space for the backlight. I've tried resinstalling the BIOS (etc) but nothing seems to work... I've also looked for keyboard drivers but it seems that it only uses the standard keyboard driver available on Windows. I attempted to contact Lenovo Support however they didn't reply to my emails. Does anyone have any ideas why it doesn't work any more? Thanks in advance!

I've got a A660, and the keyboard backlight has stopped working. I'm plugged in, on "performance" power setting, the backlight was on 20 minutes ago (before I put computer in Hibernate to carry it downstairs) and now no backlight. FN Z brings up the backlight control UI, which displays "Backlight On". I toggle through the options, turn it off. Turn it back on. Still no light.

Looking up Keyboard in the control panel shows that everything is working properly.

Any ideas? Frustrated

PS: the power button is lit, the "Satellite" logo is lit, and the light for the trackpad turns on when it's enabled.

Answer:Re: Satellite A660 - Keyboard backlight not working

Hey,

Did you install recently a driver or software update? If yes I would recommend removing this update and test it again.
Probably the system restore to an earlier point could help you to get rid of this update.

Furthermore I would try reinstalling Value Added Package. This tool can be downloaded on official Toshiba website. It controls such special functions like illumination on/off, etc.

Check this!!!

I've also looked for keyboard drivers but it seems that it only uses the standard keyboard driver available on Windows. I attempted to contact Lenovo Support however they didn't reply to my emails. Does anyone have any ideas why it doesn't work any more? Thanks in advance!

Hello. I recently bought an Aspire R13 R7-372T. I noticed that the keyboard backlight was never on. I tried the keyboard shortcut to inrease the backlight brightness but to no avail. I tried that on the pre-installed Windows 10 and also on Ubuntu 16.10. How do I debug the problem? ThanksLawand

Answer:Keyboard backlight not working: Aspire R13 R7-372T

The R7-371T model that ships in North America has a backlit keyboard. FN+F9 decreases the keyboard backlight brightness, and FN+F10 increases the keyboard backlight brightness. While we can't help with Ubuntu, the best way to troubleshoot this is to restore the system back to factory configurations and test those function keys before installing any other software or operating system. If it works then this function is working as it should. If the keyboard light does not work after a restore then we would recommend the system be serviced for the keyboard light. Should this be the case please contact the Acer support for your region from this link:

Answer:[Help] Lenovo z5170 backlight keyboard not working

Does your unit have that feature included? Check while rebooting if all keys light up. If yes, then you have the backlighted keyboard. If not, then the feature is not included in your unit.

I have a new X230 Tablet (model 3437 A99) running Windows 7 Enterprise. Whenever I press Fn+Spacebar I get an icon with a line through it. I verified that this is enabled in the BIOS. Which particular driver is needed to enable this? Is there a setting in Windows 7 that I'm missing?

Answer:X230 Tablet - Keyboard backlight not working

Not all X230t-s keyboards are made with lights. Search the forum, it was sufficently discussed before.

My Dell Inspiron 15 5558's keyboard backlight will not stay on. I just installed the Dell Feature Enhancement Pack 2.2.1, and no help.

When I go into the Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, "Dell Keyboard Backlight Settings", the third tab on it is for "Backlight," but it is greyed out and I cannot use it.

I have just spent way too much time today trying to chase this down on Google and in Dell forums, but I remain stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you,

JJ

Go to BIOS by pressing F2 button while powering on.
Then go to Advanced -> System configuration and check if the option ?illumination? is enabled.

Hello @ all,

after installing Win7 on my new bought Satellite A500-15h the keyboard backlight is not working anymore.
I dont know if it was working before with vista... but hopefully.

In Bios the illumination is enabled. Furthermore the Features (on F1-F9) controlled with Fn are not working and the beep which was normally heard by using the function-buttons for turn down/on the sound can not be heard anymore, even if the beep is enabled in BIOS.

Hopefully someone may help
Thanks in advance

I already installed the value added package and the BIOS update.
In Linux the keyboard is also not illuminated.

Answer:Satellite A500-15h - keyboard backlight is not working anymore

Hi

First of all you have to get the FN buttons working again.
In order to do this you have to install the VAP and the Toshiba Flash Card support utility from the Toshiba European driver page.

Regarding the keyboard backlight;

Not all notebooks support the keyboard backlight.
You should check the Z button.
If the Z button would contain an tiny keyboard sign then the notebook has been equipped with keyboard backlight and it should be possible to enable this using FN + Z key combination.
