No key Windows 8 in the BIOS after repair Z580. How to return?

Question: No key Windows 8 in the BIOS after repair Z580. How to return?

In 2012 I bought Lenovo Z580 (i5-3210M, GT640M). Windows 8 OEM. After purchase I reinstalled the OS. The HDD was completely formatted. A later I found a video card failure. The service center replaced the motherboard under warranty. Works perfectly. Now I want to install Windows 8. I tried to run the installation. It requires the enter key. I used "Windows OEM Product Key Tool". Result - message "Unable to open MSDM table!". The product key isn?t present in my BIOS! How do I replace it or get another?

Preferred Solution: No key Windows 8 in the BIOS after repair Z580. How to return?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No key Windows 8 in the BIOS after repair Z580. How to return?

hi aitras,

It's odd that the machine didn't gave you any "Windows isn't activated" or "Your license will expire soon" message after the unit was serviced as a new motherboard usually contains a new DPK (Digital Product Key) and you usually need to reinstall the OS for it to catch the DPK or read the product key in the BIOS and perform an slui 3 on a command line or follow this guide.to activate Windows with the new key.

Just to check, after the motherboard was replaced, did you clean install a different version of Windows into the Z580 (e.g., Windows 7 SP1 64bit) and used your own key?

In addition, if you boot into the BIOS > Information Tab, do you see the Win8 license there?
- Sample image

If you see the Win8 STD license, follow Option 1 of this guide and try to install Windows 8 on the machine (the installer should automatically pickup the DPK in the BIOS and will automatically activate Windows).

If you don't see the Win8 STD license then I recommend you contact lenovo support and report your findings as there's likely no DPK pre-injected into the new motherboard (and also if it's still possible to go about getting a new product key)

I have a lenovo Z580 pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Basic that I upgraded to Windows 8 around 2 years back and then subsequently to Windows 8.1. Yesterday, I saw that the support.lenovo.com page for my product was showing a BIOS update for Windows 7 and 8. Thinking that it would run on Windows 8.1 also, I downloaded it and installed it, but alas I was wrong, and as soon as the update happened my system stopped booting and was stuck on the boot menu and kept on asking which device to boot from. I then changed the Boot Mode from the BIOS to Legacy and was able to boot into the system, but as we know the boot process becomes slow. The new BIOS version 5FCN95WW. While updating I did not take note of the previos BIOS version and nor did I take a backup of it. If anyone has the same specification as my laptop, please tell me the current version of BIOS. And also if you have not changed your BIOS version please upload a copy of your .WPH file.

Lenovo Ideapad z580 Win10 64 I updated the bios with the private update (I know now that I should have used the public update) Then it showed this menu:http://i.imgur.com/kZaO2tf.jpg Whenever I selected HDD, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds and return to this menu. I fixed it by going into BIOS and changing bootmode from UEFI to Legacy. it booted but now everything is slow. It takes 5 mins to boot up and a further 15 minutes to reach usable speeds (I only have 4 startup programs). I tried changing it back to UEFI and it gives me the same problem as shown in the picture. I tried installing the public update, but it says that I cannot update as the current bios version is the same or newer. I went into BIOS and enabled BIOS back flash, and now when I try to start the public update, it just crashes. I also cannot access the start menu (this problem may be seperate and unrelated) I have backed up files and am prepared to do a clean reinstall of Win10, but I feel this won't work as it's a BIOS issue. The computer is unusably slow: what should I do? Thanks

Hey and a Happy New year to all! Is there any way to rollback/re-install my previous BIOS (5fcn35ww.exe) prior to: 5fcn95ww_public 64bit.exe5fcn95ww_private 64bit.exeI believe I only ran the private update and you're suppose to run the public first. Hello all -      I've done a lot of reasearch on this and have not found the solution. It all started when I tried to access BIOS, and I cannot. I've tried the lenovo button, F2, F1, delete, etc and none take me to BIOS, they all just boot windows 8.1. I tried pulling the battery, holding down the power button and booting back up, still no dice. I haven't tried Fn+F2 yet, I just read that one this morning.      I found the BIOS update on the website, attempted to follow the instructions and the 'public' file I click on opens the BIOS flashing utility and starts reading the BIOS and then stops with the error 'winflash64.exe has stopped working' and says 'exits with error 255'. Nothing seems to work. I found one post that suggests that I could need to disable DEP to make it run? I haven't tried that yet because it wasn't for this same laptop. What is the difference between the 'public' and the 'private' files? I have also read that the 'private' file will work, but I don't want to do it out of order. Do I need to do both?? My computer works and I want to keep it that way.       There's nothing really wrong with my computer other than not being able to get into BIOS (and wifi drops and itelligent pad stops working) so I want to solve that incase I experience a hard drive failure or want to replace the drive. How do I go about making this work?      Also - any ideas on wifi connectivity or the in... So for the past couple of months I have been trying to get my laptop replaced due to a flickering screen problem. I contacted support and I sent in my laptop, knowing that it would be 3 weeks before I saw it again. I received no email saying they had gotten my laptop or when they were going to send it back. After no notification from Lenovo Repair I called and messaged Lenovo Support where, everyone who I talked to had no, and I mean zero, idea what was going on with my laptop and when they looked it up they still couldn't find any information. I call and message week two to ask about my laptop and the Lenovo Support rep seemed very shocked that I had no information on my laptop, she then personally found out that my laptop was still being "looked at", meaning it was sitting in the dust for 2 weeks waiting to be inspected, I then received a generic email from Lenovo Repair saying that everything would be okay and the laptop would be fixed. The only notification I got about my laptop being returned was when FedEx dropped it off after 21 days. That was it nothing, no contact, no information exchanged.                                                                                                       &... Read more

First time post, hopefully someone can help. I bought an x121 and on delivery there was a fault with the bezel around the the screen, it didn't sit flat  at the top of the screen and as a result scratched the palm rest when lid was closed. I contacted lenovo support and sent it in for repair. They've now had it two weeks and as far as I can tell nothing has been done. I've talked to two people on the phone, one said he'd get back to by email with an update and just didn't. The second person was very helpful, looked up my ticket, told me a part had been ordered but actually 3 of those parts were in stock so my repair should be underway. Then nothing happened. I emailed them and the reply I've got now says they're sourcing a part and haven't got ETA. My question is: is it possible to get a refund instead, without a massive delay? Has anybody had any experience of this? I bought the laptop to take travelling and at the moment I just can't see it being back in time, if I could be guaranteed it would then great, but otherwise I need to buy an alternative machine.

Hi everyone, I know this might not be the right place to post this so if you could direct me to the right place that'd be great, but I couldn't find anywhere appropriate. I sent off my Lenovo Yoga 2 13 for a out of warrenty repair after talking to a support agent online about a faulty screen. The email says I should have recieved a confirmation email when they recieved the return and repairs would be complete in 10 days but the package tracking says it was delivered and signed for on the 22nd of December and I've still not heard anything back. I have tried to use the "Repair Status Check" function a few times but every time it just gives me the error "We cannot find a match for the Serial number / IMEI number and Service Request number you provided. Please check and try again." Worse still, I can't find a way to contact any kind of support about this kind of issue. And any other kind of support that I can access requires me to give my laptop's Serial Number, which I don't have written down. I thought I had everything sorted out once I was given the delivery return slip so I didn't make a note of it  Any advice on what I should do or who to contact would be highly appricated.

I dont know if anyone can help or advise. I have a Yoga 11' that I dropped two days afyer I bought it. I found my local Lenovo approved repairer, who is actually part of Lenovo here in France (Medion), and sent it to them for assessment. I paid the fee to have the screen repaired. After two months and a couple of chasing emails they tell me they can't repair the screen and that they will offer a trade (whatever that means). I have asked for my laptop back repaired or what 'trade' means they have not contacted me since. It has been nearly three months and I dont know what to do? Has someone had this issue before and can help? Thnaks Paul.

Answer:Lenovo unabble to repair my Yoga nor return it

Try asking for a manager. I've never dealt with support in France, so I'm not sure how the system goes there, but in general, calling with your case and asking for manager should help

I recently had a problem with the battery on my laptop a few weeks ago. The problem was covered under warranty and I was sent a box to return the laptop in within 60 days so it could be repaired. However, since I recieved the box for return, I have moved to a new place. My question is, what do I need to do to ensure my laptop is sent back to my correct new address after it has been repaired?

My beloved Ideapad fell down the staircase drom a bag and required majpr surgery. Thankfully,  the warranty on it had not expired so I sent it in for repair in the second half of September. It is now end of November and no repair or udate has been provided. The representatives I called vaguely said there were expecting parts for it. Does it usually take such a long time??

I dropped my laptop (by accident) today on cement and got a couple of small dents on the side. The laptop still works, and doesn't seem to be having any issues with running aside from the fact that I can no longer close the laptop all the way to trigger sleep mode (sure, I can do that manually, but I'm too lazy for that!). Plus the dents are quite unsightly to a guy like me who's geeky enough to give his computers names ;-) What I'm wandering is, since I don't have accidental damage protection, how much would it cost to repair these? An additional concern: I already needed to have it repaired, and when it came back, the memory card reader wasn't working. This is pretty minor since I have an external card reader (hence why I've been slacking on sending it back), but the trouble is that the dent is right next to the built-in reader: will Lenovo push this on me to pay for, or will this go under warranty like it should? And the biggest concern (aside from the cost to repair): I have installed Linux on my hard disk TWICE since Lenovo had decided to reinstall Windows the first time I sent it in. Lenovo did not have my permission to do that, and they did not ask at any point if that was okay. I don't care that it is *mostly* a Windows world: I want to use what works, and Linux does *not* void the warranty. So: Will Lenovo try that again?

I have been working on getting my new Lenovo ThinkPad Z61m up and running for over a week. It came with Vista. rolleyes

First, Lenovo tech support sent me recovery disks then I realized that my software "WorkPerfect" needed a patch to work with Vista, then I (this is my fault... dumb dumb..) I changed default in the control panel to Mircrosoft. Then with tech support we downloaded three links and then 32 up dates and unchecked a part of "Think Vantage" which caused an error message. An error message directing me to contact Lenovo because of "known incompatipility issues" with Microsoft Vista.

Tech had me run PC Doctor... nothing too much wrong with machine except the keyboard... They said it has Incompatability Errors and Blue Screen Errors.

Well.... What do you think? Should I take it back to the store. (I have 90 days) or send it to the IBM Repair Center.

When it is working, I like it alright ... but it is very heavy to lug around.. 7 or 8 lbs.

I will likely have to spend another $400 to $500 dollars.. now that I have a better idea of what I want.. 2.00Mhz and a maybe twice as much ram.

I have to confess... this computer was purchased at a discounted price as it was a "display model" and apparently a return from 5 months ago according to the warrenty adjuster lady. Out the door I payed $600.

Give IBM a chance???? :confused Go solve the problem now and buy a light weight.

Repair depot received my G560 laptop on 12/2 after I talked to tech support who assured me it was a 7 day turn around in the repair depot.  So, I figured with shipping both ways, I should not be without it for more than 11 days. On 12/5 they posted an update that they were waiting for parts.  That is the last update online.  I called 12/7 and was told the motherboard was replaced and they were testing the system.  I called 12/9 and told the same thing.  I asked how long they will be testing the system since it took 5 months for it to happen to me.  I just got the canned apologies and assurances.  But, this guy said maybe 3-5 more business days.  I called 12/14 (yesterday) and told the exact same update.  She assured me she would email the depot and get an update and call me back.  Of course by evening she had not called.  So, I called again.  This guy told me the update put in their system (still nothing changed online) earlier that day was they were waiting for parts.  So, on 12/5 it was repaired and on 12/14 they are waiting for parts.  CRAZY!!  I explained to him I was going out of town next week and needed it back before then.  He assured me I would have it back before I leave.  How can can make that assurance is beyond me since they are waiting for parts (that they should keep a large supply of since this seems to be a common problem) and he has no idea when the parts will be i... Hi, My screen is flickering and then eventually just goes completely black after a certain point when opening the lid of the laptop. It has to be at basically a 90 degree angle to the keyboard to function correct. Beyond that it begins the flickering.I've seen comments saying this common and due to ribbon cables. However I only bought my laptop at the beginning of the year and do not wish to fix this myself as I assume it's covered by warranty. How do I go about getting my laptop repaired?
System Specs are as follows:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

Ram - 8GB

I just got a w520 with baseline configuration except for the 3x3 wireless card. I have upgraded the laptop to 16gb of ram and added a MSATA ssd. I love the laptop except for one issue: any amount of static electricity crashes the laptop. The laptop goes black, often with some quick graphical errors and then reboots. Simply sliding the laptop across the bed causes it to crash (I can swing it around in air as much as I want). Putting the laptop into the padded (nylon?) sleeve in my backpack will also cause it to crash, even while the laptop is in sleep mode. I have had this issue since I have got the laptop on day one (before any upgrades). I was hoping the issue would resolve itself as a software issue. I have since realized it is a hardware issue I have no control over as it is repeatable even while in bios.  This situation leaves me with a dilemma: Return the laptop and possibly get one from a different model/manufacture, or turn it in for repair.  There is currently a huge thread about the issue and other sudden shut downs with the W520, so others have had the issue. However, given the number of laptops sold, I know most must not be having issues. In that case, sending the laptop in for repair should fix things. However, I have heard that the repair service does little to recreate situational problems and would not see or fix my issue, so I would be better off sending the laptop in as a return. However, a return might cost me some additional mo... Read more

Summary
I ordered a Thinkpad T420S, I love it, but it came with a serious manufacturing defect in the display and because the wireless card doesn't work well. There's a bright white area just left of center of the display. It's not a pixel problem, it looks like a light behind the screen that's shining through somehow. I called support, they said return it via EasyServ and the display would be replaced and the wireless card could be swapped out for the Intel option (which was a free option when I ordered the device). I didn't hear back for more than a week. I called in, and they say that the repair -on my unused, brand new laptop- would cost more than $700.

The Details
I ordered a laptop on 8 December 2011 through Lenovo's website, order #2J23X1. The display was defective, with a large white area on the screen all the time. The wireless card wouldn't work with most of the networks that I use regularly. I called 800.426.7416 and spoke with Mxxxxx. He recommended that I return the laptop via EasyServ because that would be faster than returning the laptop and then re-ordering the same one. He assured me that the display and wireless card replacement would be no problem. I had no preference besides needed the laptop as soon as possible for my work. If I had been advised to return the laptop at this point, I would not be having any problems right now.

Every attempt to access the BIOS failed, it leads me to the GRUB system installed on my system. It doesn't matter how I try to access it - by pushing F2 on system boot or by the novo button.here a 10 sec video to show you what happens (cause it seems no one understand\believe me)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jglTWZVqGeM How may I access my BIOS?

Answer:can't access the bios on z580

hi snird,

Your problem might be similar to this and this thread

Things that you can try:
1. Remove the HDD physically and hold F2 / press the Novo button to access the BIOS
2. Follow repair instructions posted by katsu on this thread.
3. Reinstall Windows 8 and boot to the BIOS using this method.

Hope this helps

Answer:Z580 can't enter bios

Hi Weem  ,

To answer your query , accessing the BIOS on this model :
Turn off the pc and use the Novo Button (item6 page 2) instead of the power button to turn it back on.
Novo Menu screen would offer BIOS set up.

To verify , when you said  "computer does not turn in any way " would there be any indicator LED turn ed on , any fan activity ? Was it just not showing anything onscreen  or  no indication of any power ?
If so check on power checkout from the hardware manual for reference (page 21).

Update us how things go.

Hello, My HDD died, and I got a new on my birthday. Only after that I realized I can not access bios/efi on my z580 notebook, since it seems it was located on the hidden partition of the old hdd. So I couldn't find a way to install new system on it. I tried a lot of things, like booting from usb with windows, but that thing doesn't work either. To be exact, when I press the nova button - it gives me 4 options, normal boot, bios, select media and recovery. Of course everything just wants to boot up the system, not into the bios nor to a pick a media screen. What do I have to do to make the efi work again? I never did onekey recovery, so that's out of the options. Is there a tool, which would partition the new HDD so it works again? Thank you.

Have a lenovo Z580 and it started cycling on start up.Lenovo screen. - your PC ran into a problem..preparing for automatic repair...your pc ran into a problem.. lenovo screen.....Tried the small recover button (there is no option for the lenovo recovery). I get    Normal start up, bios setup, boot menu and recovery. On all options it goes into a cycle.Ordered the recovery discs fron lenovo and thought I would try those. Also ordered a new solid state drive (in for a penny). I can't get the CDs seen, as it loops into the above cycle when either drive is installed.I use the small button to start with the Normal start up, bios setup, boot menu and recovery options, but nothing as it is trying to start as normsl and not use the cds.I tried taking out the Hard drive completely and switching on. Trying to get to the BIOS to change  so it is told to boot from CDs, but just can't get into the BIOS by any combination of key strokes. Help!

Question: Z580 BIOS problem

Hi I was unable to enter BIOS, either using the charm button or going through Windows 8 settings.I have uploaded a video showing my Lenovo Z580 failing to load BIOS and rather booting straight into Window8. As it as less then 6 months old I sent it into service. Today I have been informed by Lenovo that I have to pay 91.27 GBP. The  repair cost sheet provided by Medion makes reference to a keyboard part (CCYT4GUK). I am very disappointed by this service and I am not confident that the BIOS issue will be fixed. I have now published my first blog entry, and intend to tell anyone who will listen, either through FB, twitter, or Instagram to be think very carefully before buying from Lenovo. If anyone is able to help me resolve this dispute I would be more inclined to think kindly of Lenovo and Lenovo Support in the future. Regards Jim

Hello, well I had to reformat my pc a couple of months ago due to some hard ware failure. I had a Geeksquad guy help since it was covered in my warranty, plus the hardware being replaced was a lil tricky so I wanted someone who would know how to do it better then I would at least. But after reformatting my pc he went into the bios and changed a bunch of things, I don't believe it was with any ill intention, but ever since then I have permanent glitches for example if my screensaver is set to come on in 10 mins then it comes on in 10 but goes off in 10 then on in 10 and off in 10...........etc... you get the picture. I also always get four removable drives that appear after boot up and also the removable media symbol in the start menu tray, but there are no usb drives attached to my pc. Couple other glitches as a result of him messing with the bios settings.

So I would like to now is there a way to return all the BIOS settings back to factory default? Or does reformatting the hard drive automaticly do that? I have Windows XP Media Center Edition with the classic recovery D partition on the hard drive.
I have to reformat anyways since I have a cracker on my system that nothing and I mean no program in this universe has been able to get rid of and most can't even detect it.

Thanks!

Answer:BIOS settings return to default?

You should go back to him and get him to fix it properly. If you mess with it yourself, you'll void the warranty.

Answer:U41-70 - RETURN TO OLD BIOS SPLASH IMAGE

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Unfortunately I have no solution for your splash screen image problem other than to say each time you flash the BIOS there is a slight element of risk involved.  Even under the most perfect conditions a BIOS flash can fail and turn your working computer into an expensive paper weight. Personally, flashing the BIOS to change a splash screen that appears for just a few seconds isn't worth the risk in my opinion.

So here is the story, I bought my laptop 4gb ram installed and last year i bought 8gb ram to upgrade it. But both rams together made my laptop unstable, it was at 100% cpu usage even when it was idle. So i started using only 8gb. Then i decided to update my bios thinking maybe it would fix the problem. I flashed the 'public' 5FCN95WW version first as instructed, it rebooted then i was stuck at the boot menu. I did some digging and found out that it would only boot on legacy(don't know why). And when i tried to flash the 'private' 5FCN95WW version it said something like 'can't flash same or older version'. Then i did some more digging then found out that i could flash it if i changed the bios setting 'bios back flash'. So i did that and i was able to flash the 'private' 5FCN95WW version.  Now it's running with 12gb ram smoothly. But the thermal management and brigthness controls are messed up. I can't change the fan speed it seems to be stuck at dedusting mode but it's working on auto adjusted speed. Can't change it to silent or any other speed. And brightness level is faulty, it takes like 20 (fn + up)'s to get to max brightness. So here are my questions, -Are you guys working on a fix for thermal management and brightness issue?-Why can't i boot with UEFI? Lenovo Z580INTEL I5-3210M128GB(TOSHIBA SSD(SYSTEM DRIVER)) + 500GB(SEAGATE HDD)12GB RAM(8GB KINGSTON + 4GB HYNIX)2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE 630MWINDOWS 7 64BIT

Hello everyone!
I want to install Ubuntu from a USB stick on my Z585 Ideapad. I've already prepared everything as written on Ubuntu official tutorial, but I need to set USB to be loaded before the HDD so that I can really install Ubuntu. So I need to enter the BIOS settings.

I have searched and read many topics on the Internet (about entering BIOS) but haven't found any solution yet I even read the official user guide that was with the laptop when I bought it and also nothing ...

So could anyone help me?

PS When I start the computer it's just this Lenovo logo on the middle of the screen and this windows 8 loading circle with other cirles going around and then just windows starts. No information or anything how to enter BIOS settings :/

Hi all. It's my first post here on this forum. I have problem. I had update BIOS to version 5FCN95WW. Right now LAN/Ethernet don't work. After fresh instalation of Windows 8.1 + Drivers from your site my MAC adress of Realtek LAN card is 00-00-00-00-00-00. I checked on Windows 7 and XP. Same story. When I set new physical adress number in driver settings under Device Manager and restart everything works fine BUT...I can't install any linux distro that need network connection because card can't get ip adress from any router. TESTED. I send my laptop on warranty but service say everything is good. SIC!I buy machine without any OS and now use legal Windows 8.1 and they say that i don't have compatible OS. **bleep**!?I argue with service about 1 week sending emails but they say everything is okay. But it's not. Today laptop return to me and guess. LAN don't work. It work only when i enter new adress in driver settings. Right now I don't know what to do. Laptop was in Medion service in Germany and right now I know only one. That peoples working there know nothing and don't know how check LAN MAC adress having Laptop without OS ( with blank HDD ). Can anybody help? Maybe someone had similar problem with MAC adress after BIOS Update.

Hi, my Z580 came with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics card, which isn't a terrible card but it only has 64mb of dedicated video memory, and unfortunately--I'm going to be frank--the bios screen kind of sucks. There aren't any advanced graphics options at all (most have an option to adjust dedicated video memory). Why isn't there an update out there? Is there any way to flash the bios to something more open, or am I stuck with having to look into buying a computer with a better graphics card and bios? Thanks, //Caleb

Answer:Ideapad Z580 bios options

Unless you want to play the latest games at high resolution and settings the HD4000 is fine, I have played Boarderlands 2 at low to medium settings, the 64mb memory is the lowest the HD4000 can use it will dynamically use your notebooks memory and mine can use up to 1600mb as i have 8gb of notebook memory. You cannot change any graphic setting in the bios, and if you use an non-lenovo graphic driver say from the Intel website it will mess your notebooks brightness settings up.John

I just bought a Z580 Ideapad a couple of days ago, I intend to dual boot off of it, either windows 7 and fedora or win 8 and fedora (it came with windows 8 pre-installed) I've so far been unable to get access to the bios from loading in, I've tried F2 which the manual and a number of posts have mentioned is the BIOS key for the Z580, I've also tried the novo key which some other site mentioned, I was able to get into the bios via the charm bar, in windows 8, I changed it from UEFI support to Legacy in the hopes that when I do install fedora and/or win 7 it'll make it easier, but I still don't know how to access bios without windows there's no message when I boot and no matter how many times I restart I can't seem to get it to load in by pressing the keys. I've been searching far and wide for information regarding this, and would appreciate any response that might help me. Alternatively if no solution can be found, I would appreciate if someone would point out to me a computer that doesn't have this deficiency as I'm still within the time frame to return this computer and would (albeit unhappily) return this one in order to purchase another that might not have this issue.

Hi,I can't access my bios since I forgot my bios password which I changed a couple of months ago.Is there a way to retrieve or reset it? Bios: Lenovo 5FCN34WW

Answer:z580 Forgot bios password

Sorry, no, there is no way to retrieve BIOS passwords and the only way to reset them is to remember them and use them on the appropriate sceens within the BIOS. You'd be best advised to call Service to discuss any options available to you.

I have notice an issue where I try to get into the BIOS and connot seem to get to it.  I have not reformatted the drive or changed any componets. F2 / F12 / ESC / DELETE / Function R / Function B / Function F / Function ESC / Win B ...  do not work  on startup.   Booting with the NEVO button (small button to the right of the power button)  brings up the menu for the BIOS but it just starts the OS, never brings up the BIOS.  The menu also bring up the option to boot to another device and it does not function either. When  I shift "Restart" I do get into the UEFI Settings and select it, but still nothing works. Is there any good suggestions on getting this started again?  I looked for "new" BIOS and yet cannot find any. I have been on Hold with Lenovo support for over 40 minutes now ... is this typical? .

Answer:Ideapad Z580 BIOS broken

Well I tried pulling the Hard Drive out so it could not fire up the OS.  The "Lenovo" start screen did not even come up and no options on getting into the BIOS.  I even had a blank hard drive with no OS and same results, one would expect something. Anyone have any ideas?  Seems dumb that the BIOS can be broken, or you cannot get access to them.

A friend has one of these Z580 laptops. it is shipped with a UEFI BIOS namely 5FCN89WW. I was wondering why there are no BIOS downloads on the Lenovo site for this unit as having googled others have different versions. I am unable to detemine which is the newest available. Is the BIOS i mentioned the newest? Is there a download link for it either an exe or ROM/WPH with a flash utilty?Did this unit ever come shipped with Windows 7 pre installed before Win 8 was released& finally does the version presently installed have a SLIC 2.1 in addition to the UEFI to enabnle SLP for windows 7. As she is away I cannot check the BIOS myself and am new to UEFI and Win 8.

Answer:Z580 Windows7 and UEFI BIOS

Also please can you explain how I can disable the secure boot within UEFI so that dual booting can be made possible?I only have the option to switch to legacy BIOS mode. As i understand it lenovo is bound contract via Microsoft's Windows Hardware Certification Requirements for Client and Server Systems to provide full functionality with UEFI firmware settings. As i see it if I go to legacy mode Win 8 will not boot thus it makes it impossible to use both linux or win7 as well as win8. Am I missing something or is lenovo in serious breach of its contract with microsoft.I would appreciate a response as the laotop is only a few weeks old and as such the owner may now have grounds to return the unit to Lenovo for a full refund.

I solved the problem and the solution is on the bottom of the post hi all. my machine is Lenovo Z580 with Windows 7. some time ago I accidentally installed Linux Mint on my whole HDD, so all the partitions and files (including recovery partition) were erased. I then installed back Windows 7 and partitioned the HDD.however, since the incident, I'm unable to enter BIOS. I'd like to change boot sequence, because the laptop wants to boot from network, displays an error, and then boots from HDD and Windows 7 starts. I can access boot manager with F12 during boot, and the entries are (those aren't the exact names of course, except the first one): 1. ubuntu <- yes, that's how it's called. I guess it's a remnant of Linux Mint installation2. booting from network3. booting from HDD4. booting from DVD5. booting from USB I tried the following things:1. pressing F2 at boot. it used to work before the incident, now the laptop ignores it and proceeds to attempting boot from network, displays an error, and then boots from HDD.2. using Novo button instead of power button, then choosing "BIOS setup" option - the laptop still proceeds to boot OR displays black screen and need to be shut down3. removing boot entries using Ubuntu via USB stick (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/z580-can-t-access-bios-setup-or-boot-menu-a... - I can't remove any entry, because after using >efibootmgr -v no list appears, and when I enter ... Turning off Windows fastboot and re-attempting steps 1 to 7 above. Nothing works. Lenovo, why is this not working?RegardsFarhad

Hi vikpatel,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If using the Novo button or FN + F2 on restart does not work for you, I would suggest that you take time reviewing the hardware manual (page 37-39) and service module here to remove the hard drive. Without an operating system to boot from would definitely give you the machine level options to access the BIOS.

Hi all, I've recently made a post about high temperatures on my lenovo z580 (Brand new) when playing games, but I would like to know how to access the bios because there is no way to check temperatures and fan profiles. On startup I hitf2, and a bios interface appears, however I have noticed that this menu gives me no options as to system temperatures, cpu temperatures or fan profiles. I would like to know if there is an option somewhere to, get more advanced options in bios. Also I noticed there is an option called "Reset to setup mode". I would like to know what this does. Thanks for any help regarding this matter. Sven.

Hi I have a three year old i5 64 bit z580 running windows 10. The fan seems to have stopped working and the laptop overheating. When I run the dust removal the fan still does not work. I have inspected it and can spin it mannually and it isnt dirty. It doesnt spin at all though not even on boot up - i have turned it on with the bottom cover off so definitely not spinning. I have run Speedfan which doesnt show any info on the fan and Im not getting any error messages so I decided to look at bios and see if I could see any issue. However this doesnt seem possible. The onekey facility wont work while running or from boot up even after removing battery and holding in the power button. None of the function keys access it. The settings, recovery etc way into the uefi bios settings will reboot then offer to access bios before booting as normal. I have tried all this with the quick boot options turned off too.

I tried to run the new BIOS upgrade on the drivers page, but after running the first file (the 'public' one), my laptop wouldn't boot normally anymore. It showed me a boot menu telling me to select the right device to boot from, but nothing worked. I did still have access to the BIOS, so I told it to Load Default Settings and I finally got it working again. However, since some settings somewhere have been changed, I have been coping with some things I just can't seem to get right. What's especially annoying is that my touchpad toggle (fn + f6) no longer works. The icon shows up telling me I have disabled or enabled my touchpad, but the touchpad keeps working regardlessly. I uninstalled the touchpad driver and rebooted and it did work, but when I re´nstalled the driver, it stopped functioning again. I figured that that should probably be the other way around Another smaller issue I have run into is that changing my brightness acts kind of weird. It works, but I've seen it go up or down in my display bar by 5 blocks at a time or 1 block (it's now 1 block at a time), but I believe 5 blocks at a time is more like it used to work. But the weirdest part (but least troubling actually) is that the display bar is the same size as the sound display bar, so 10 blocks, but there are waaaay more options than that, so I can keep upping the brightness even if the bar is full. The sunny side of the whole thing is that my graphic driver issues that lead me to the driver page have bee... Hi, Can some Z580 owners help me? I plan to buy a Z580. Does the Z580 BIOS have an option to choose discrete graphics( that is, the dedicated Nvidia card)? Some models have a choice in the BIOS only between UMA and Switchable graphics(Optimus). Some other models have 3 choices in the BIOS; UMA, discrete and Switchable. I want to know whether the Z580 comes with these 3 options. Thanks.

Answer:[Z580] a question about downgrading my bios ?

I doubt downgrading the BIOS is possible.  Unlike other computer manufacturers, Lenovo does not have older BIOS versions available for download.   My best guess is your installed copy of Windows isn't liking your newer BIOS version.  If it were me, my next step would be to back up any important data and do a One Key Recovery.  A fresh install of Windows should correct any conflicts between Windows and the new BIOS.

While attempting to change the Secure Boot function in BIOS I somehow corrupted it. As a result I can no longer access BIOS using the Novo key, pressing F2, or using a variety of other techniques. A local computer shop was able to bring up BIOS by removing the CMOS battery, but that's no way to routinely enter BIOS. I've was told by the computer shop that BIOS needs re-flashed. Currently there is no BIOS file available for the Ideapad Z580 on Lenovo's Web site. Is it possible for someone in service send these files to me. Thanks,JBrush

I recently lost connection to my pc running Plex, turns out Windows made the decision to upgrade to 10 for me. It stopped halfway through, 'unable to complete', attemped several times to restore it to Windows 8.1, and failed. I tried a USB recovery disk, and now when I power on my PC, I get the Samsung logo (normal), and a bar accross the bottom that says 'f2 for setup, f4 for recovery', along with a logo that says 'Phoenix'. If I press buttons, it goes into recovery, regardless of which button I push. If I press no buttons, it goes into recovery. I had the recovery app (which appears to not be a Microsoft product, but I have no way to find out, there's no help or about) reinstall Windows 8, but alas, it continues to do the same loop and put me back into recovery (this happens even if I remove the USB disk and turn the PC on). I've also unplugged everything and left the CMOS battery out for a couple of hours, same issue. I'm at a total loss here. I can SEE files in the recovery app, so I know the hard drive isn't toast, but...how the heck do I get into my BIOS or into Windows? I BELIEVE the issue could be a setting in the BIOS, I did try a trick that a forum mentioned, which was to set the boot away from UEFI, but now I can't get back to change it.

Answer:Windows 8.1 not letting me access bios, boot, or repair

If you are looking to recover your data before a clean install of Windows 8.1 use a live linux disk or USB flash drive to recover your data.

A Samsung's boot menu can be accessed by tapping either Esc, F12, or F2 at boot in order to select your boot device.

Download Fatdog64, burn the iso to CD or use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive. Select MBR for a partition scheme. Leave all boxes as checked. Where you see FreeDos select iso image in the dropdown box. Click the icon and browse to the FatDog iso. Press start. If Windows 8 had hybrid shutdown it's possible Fatdog will not be able to mount your windows partition which will be labeled sdaX in the lower left of the FatDog desktop, X being the number of your Windows partition which on a Windows 8 computer may be sda3. If Fatdog cannot mount the partition then you may need to attach the drive to another computer using a USB enclosure or USB adapter. If you login to your Windows 8 using a Windows Live account the files may be encrypted.

If you get to the FatDog desktop by tapping one of the bootmenu keys post back and I can give further instructions on copying your files to an external drive. After the files are copied you can do a clean Windows 8.1 install using the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool. Because your computer came preinstalled with Windows 8 the key is embedded in firmware will self-activate once oneline.

Hello everyone.

Just a couple of simple questions I hope to get some help answering.

Firstly, I've been having a lot of trouble with my laptop. It's an ABS Mayhem G1, 1GB DDR SDRAM, 60GB 7200RPM HD, 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4, Radeon 9600M Graphics Card, etc. and so forth. Anyways, awhile back (six or seven months ago) I began having serious problems -- my device manager no longer displayed that I had any devices connected, event viewer revealed that several of the startup .dll's failed to run on startup, etc. I called ABS tech support, and they couldn't figure out what was going on. In the end we had to restore the laptop to its factory defaults, erasing my hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP.

Presently, my system has begun to act up again. Every time I try to run Windows, even in Safe Mode, I receive a Stop Error 0x0000007E Bluescreen right as Windows XP Home begins to display its startup screen. Once again, ABS tech support has been little help. I've been told from other reliable sources (local computer repair/support) that I have two other options to try: Updating the System BIOS, and a Windows Repair. Here are my questions --

1. I was told to load the BIOS updates onto a floppy, and then boot my laptop from that floppy. How exactly do I do this (boot from a floppy?)?

2. There are several BIOS updates for my chosen laptop. Should I just download the latest one onto a diskette, or do I have to install them all in order, starting with the earliest?... Read more

You'll need to change the settings in your BIO's to see the CD first if putting your cd in and rebooting doesn't do it. either ESC or delete key will put you into the BIO after you reboot to get there to configure this.

The lastest one.

3. I've been told two different things about Windows Repair: One is that it will leave my programs alone, but will delete everything in My Document folder; the second says that nothing on my hard drive will be touched. Which is it? I'm a little tired of losing data I've worked hard to find or create. Click to expand...

What's the name of the program your using for the windows repair?

Hi everyone,I'm having trouble assessing BIOS settings and Flashing BIOS (71cn51ww). I have an Ideapad Z580 that upgraded (accidently) to Win10.   About two months later, the PC crashed.  Eventually I returned to Win8 by using Novo button which provides a BIOS selection window and selecting option #4, Recovery.  I want to assess option #2 BIOS settings to boot up from the DVD drive or USB when needed. Options #1,#2 and #3 all boot up to Win8. I tried to flash the BIOS but I get this message, "IHISI: Get support mode error in SMI! SMI return code: 0xEF".   Is there anything I can do to unlock the BIOS to acess BIOS settings?  Also, none of these buttons (F1, F2, Fn+F2, F8 or F12) lead to "BIOS settings" during startup by either holding the button down or rapid pressing the button.  I'd like to have a dual boot option but I cannot even start thinking about that.  Has anyone found a solution for this?Thank you,Jim

Hello,I just got my Lenovo Z580 a few days ago and it has windows 8 pre-installed, And so I wanted a downgrade back to my lovely Windows 7,But here's what happened: Everything is now Broken, How I used to access the BIOS at the beginning was by going on the Win 8 Menu,So I went to this man at a computer center to manage and install win 7, So what he did was remove the HDD and erase it so he could go ahead and Install win 7 by Disc, *note: That I couldn't Boot from my memory pen with win 7 home premium, And Now this happens, When we try to open up the laptop, It just sits there with a black screen, If we press the recovery button it shows us a little menu with: Normal startup,Bios setup,Bios Menu and system recovery, But nicely done Nothing works at all, Resulting in an errorless black screen that doesn't seem to do anything, So there goes my Bios settings and any chance of installing ANY Os at all, I've tried installing Win 7 Home premium by disc but it completely stops at the win 7 like splash screen, Win 8 didn't work either, So we tried a recovery disc, *But it was a Toshiba Recovery Disc* But it still had nothing to declare, So My computer is pretty much a lifeless Body that only starts up to a black screen, Can't boot from USBs and Doesn't run any Cds. Please help me because it would be REALLY useful if you do, And since it's easter I can't really contact the costumer support, Because I'm assuming I can clone the files from a healthy Z580 to my Hdd, Which Weirdly enough ... So I have bought my Z580 with GF630M 2years ago. And I was pretty happy with it. Except few things...like Nvidia Prime setting low GPU clocks after awakening laptop from sleep and fan control only possible with Energy management.I really like to play games on my laptop, so when I was playing game I have set my energy management to "efficient heat dissipation" (English is not my native language so I dunno how is it called in english) which set fan to little higher speed, and everything was ok.But about month ago I have made BIOS update from Lenovo site. Which completely reset bios setting and they must have been set manually again. Took me about half a day to make it working again. Also it somehow messed up drivers so I was forced to reinstall them all. But most importantly that BIOS update changed fan controls which means that in power management I am now able to choose only between "Normal" mode and "Dust removing" mode.( Yes, I have tried to install diferent versions on energy management....all of them from lenovo site, but none of them works)That means that now everytime I play game and temperature rise above aprox. 92░C, driver sets GPU clocks approximately to the half of the original value and Game starts to have unplayable FPS.Now my laptop doesn't have apropriate cooling and fan is running like nothing important is happening while GPU is boiling at 90░.Can somebody give me link to previous BIOS update? I really need downgrade because now I am not able to play game at... Read more

I have Lenovo z580 without pre-installed Windows and in UEFI mode, bought in Aug'13. For these year and half I have using Linux and that was OK.But two days ago I'he get need Windows and decided to install W7 to my laptop. That was OK too (exclude no built-in LAN driver, but forget it). After all I have installed drivers from Lenovo Driver Page, include BIOS update (up to ...95WW version, I think), I installed ...public.exe part of it and rebooted my laptop. After that I got Secure Boot Block (no idea, how it works, hornestry), I've swiched it off in BIOS and reboot. Finally, I got Starting Windows screen for half-hour, which was rebooted by holding power button. Now I have glitch in top of the Starting Windows screen in my OS and same situation in case of loading from USB-stick. Loading from MBR-drive still alive at the moment. Can anyone be kindly and help me?.. It would be great to do something with it and boot Win from UEFI again. And sorry for my terrible English. ========== A final solution:Use LEGACY and UEFI FIRST values in Boot tab.

Answer:Z580 UEFI issue after updating BIOS

Hello and welcome,

Is there a separate option to enable CSM support in your BIOS? Somewhere near the legacy/UEFI setting, probably.

If so, turn it on and try it.  Win 7 UEFI mode w/out CSM support will hang at the Windows start splash in some UEFI implementations.
