Ideapad Z500 Luminosity Problem after updating bios

Question: Ideapad Z500 Luminosity Problem after updating bios

Hi, I have an Ideapad Z500 with an W8.1 installed on it. I updated the bios to the last version but after that I can not control the luminosity level anymore. When I try to do it pressing the Hotkey it trurns to the lowest level of luminosity and I can only fix it by pressing the hotfix key when the laptop starts. I can not return to the old bios version. What shall I do? can anyone help please. Thank you

Preferred Solution: Ideapad Z500 Luminosity Problem after updating bios

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm hoping somebody will help me out of this nightmare. Cause i'm searching and searching across the net for an answer for this the whole day and i didn't find any accurate solutions for this.Well to start, i just updated my laptop's BIOS two days ago because i just saw on lenovo's website that there is an update file for the BIOS and I rapidly DL it and installed as per instruction, it was running fine after that but i just noticed that the system start up and even shutdown takes centuries to finish. Then i turned it on sleep having the screen facedown to the keyboard, and noticeably the 4 indicator lights are still lighted up for approximately 5mins before the laptop totally turned to sleep mode. Then I turned it on at the evening and voila! It is not booting up to the log in screen, it just gives me a background wallpaper for the log in screen without the avatar box and password in put box. After the BIOS screen loads, it offers me two options:(1) Launch Startup Repair [recommended as it says](2) Start windows normallyI tried both but still having the same result. And one option that i tried is to reformat the laptop instead because onekey recovery is also not a dependable solution. But lo and behold!!! It also stuck into a part where it says "starting up the setup".I really don't know what to do now!!! Please Lenovo team help me! I'm kinda smash the screen here! Its just that BIOS update is the Major update in my laptop after 4yrs of purchase. Help!

So I learned that Lenovo does not let you do sh*#& with the notebook you buy from them. my problem is as follows: my z500 came with a broadcom wifi card. this is no good, because it is not compatible with intels wireless display. solution would be installing a intel centrino card, the n2230 in particular, for which lenovo even offers drivers on the z500 support page. i bought one of these adapters on ebay, installed it and then my laptop produced an error: this card is invalid, remove it, otherwise the laptop will not boot. bios checks the wifi adapter against a whitelist. if the adapter is not on the list, the machine does not boot. what makes it really bad is that you cant buy a regular intel centrino n2230. you have to get one branded from lenovo.  can anyone tell me where i can get a lenovo branded n2230 wifi adapter? calling lenovo didn't help. they just said: can only sell you what was installed in your laptop when you bought it.  has anyone sucessfully removed or augmented the z500s bios whitelist? has anyone sucessfully rebranded an intel wifi card, so bios recognizes it as one on the whitelist?  any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi all. I bought a Lenovo z500 notebook 3 days ago. Everything is perfect but I have a big problem. As you know, this machine has 2 graphic cards, one of them is Intel and another is NVidia. -  I have downloaded the Intel Graphic drivers from Lenovo's support website and I could install it correctly. However, if I try to install a NVidia driver it says "Graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"  I tried the newest driver and some old drivers +  the driver from Lenovo Support website but I couldnt install it.-  Also there is nothing about NVidia in the Device Manager. It only shows Intel graphic card.-  Monitoring programs like AIDA64, CPU-Z, GPU-Z  show only Intel, they cannot see NVidia too.-  I updated the bios to the newest version, v18 but nothing changed.-  Graphic setting is "Switchable" in the bios. Now,  how can I fix this problem ? Thanks.

Hello all, I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z500 taking long time to boot (almost 30 min) The computer is stuck with black screen during 30 min, before the lenovo logo appears and then it boots fine. Before logo, just a black screen and power looks good. The problem, the fans don't work and the computer gets very warm. Sometimes, because the high-temperatures, it automatically switches down, because temperatures, before seeing the lenovo logo. With lenovo diagnosis software I have checked all the hardware, and the tools says all hardware is ok. My os is Windows 10. Could you please, somebody help me to solve this problem? I'm afraid the heat of the start could harm my computer. Why this boot is taking so long before logo? Thank you in advance, ip

Answer:Lenovo ideapad z500 hard drive problem?

Sure looks like the hard drive is failing, and needs to be replaced.     If it is under warranty, I would have it fixed under warranty.     If not, Lenovo support should be able to send you recovery media to reinstall Windows (WIndows 8?), and I believe on that model the Windows Product ID is stored in the BIOS, so the Windows product ID key will be applied automatically when you reinstall. Good Luck  http://www.lenovo.com/contact/uk/en/  Lenovo Support - United Kingdom0333-777-3991 (National Rate)9:00 - 18:00 Monday - Friday

When I was playing Mass Effect 2 the game would suddenly freeze but the sound would keep going, though it would sound like a horn being blown down industrial fans and every so often would revert back to normal. If I had earphones in it would keep swiching to speakers instead. If I didn't Ctrl+Alt+Delete to task manager the laptop would sometimes blue screen or if I didn't end the task it could also blue screen. I thought the laptop needed to be refreshed so I did so, reinstalled all drivers and the game but it was still happening. I even found that when I went onto the nvidia control panel and looked at the spinning preview image, after a few seconds the system would freeze until getting the message about the driver not responding and successfully recovering. I've tried 3 drivers (The original that shipped with the laptop, the latest lenovo released driver and nvidia's latest driver) but they all had the same problem. For now I have just completely removed the nvidia drivers and haven't had any more problems. I would like to get the graphics card working again and was hoping someone might know a soloution. The Graphics Card is the Nvidia GeForce GT 740M. The most common blue screen I was getting when I wasn't gaming was the driver_power_state_failiure one and when I was I think it was the dpc_watchdog_violation one.

Once I opened my laptop and it was in a OKR mode and it would not boot normal, just keep going into OKR mode. I performed OKR but nothing change (except loosing my data which I checked using Ubuntu). Is there any way how to make it boot normal? Or to reinstall windows using some other tool? Is it some system bug?

I flashed to the latest U310 bios (http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/65cn99ww.exe). I switched to "legacy boot mode" (from UEFI), in an attempt to workaround a driver issue. Now, I'm no longer able to enter BIOS whatsoever. There are plenty of forum posts by many users hitting the same or similar issues on U310/U410/U330 and similar ideapad products. [Update] After trying a million things, I was able to reset the CMOS from within Windows using the CMOS de-animator tool. I zero'd out my CMOS and then was easily able to enter BIOS on next boot. The tool is available here: http://boginjr.com/it/sw/dev/de-cmos3/ This is a kinda high risk tool to workaround Lenovo's terribly buggy BIOS. But I can confirm, at least, that it works successfully on my Lenovo u310 touch. But use at your own risk. Hope it can help out the next person. Lenovo: fix your buggy BIOS!!

Hello! my problem started when i done a bios update installation. I already use a BIOS password. I do it but functions buttons be default and i cant Work with it.Unfortunately, during the update has been damaged password . I gave the computer to the servis but they told me that "they are there they can not remove the BIOS password". is really the only way out of my situation is replacing the entire motherboard and not the only one holding my password? Its a very problem for me but my hdd crash and for now i cant install any operation system.

Answer:lenovo z500 BIOS password problem

MB replacement is one option. Another is to have your bios reverse engineered (mod your bios). Reverse engineering is not allowed in the forum but there are other forum which deal with it so just use google to find them if you want.

Hi guys! Newbie here.  I'm not sure if this has already been asked before and all so I'm just putting it out here. (Thanks Mr./Ms. Mod! ) I recently updated my system to Windows 8.1 and I've been experiencing issues in booting up, restarting and shutting down. Not that it does that at times but it's REALLY taking too long for my system just to shut down, boot up or to restart compared to before I updated to 8.1 (Windows 8 essentially). I've tried installing updated drivers for  the system as found in the support page but it didn't seem to do anything. Tried doing the " sfc /scannow" thing in the command prompt and also configuring startup items. I also tried changing the fast boot setting and it just doesn't work. Last thing I want to do is a refresh or even a reset. Is this something Windows can fix or is it my system that's faulty? What could I do and how should I do it? Thank you very much in advance, guys! The lag is still bearable though, it's just really annoying when comparing the "speed" now  to before I updated. Thanks again!

Answer:Z500 boot issue after updating to Windows 8.1

Hi z500_user,

Does your computer installed with an SSD?

Can you explain how the system slowed down the shutdown and boot up, like does it hang sometime while shutting down or startup?

"System with SSD caching software may get affected when upgraded to 8.1"

SSD caching is the one making the system utilize the SSD to speed up boot up time and shutdown response,
If you're used to SSD caching speed you' will feel the drop if speed when this feature is not working.

If you system does not have an SSD, Performing a Clean Boot may help,

I just recently got the Ideapad Z500 for my birthday and I loved it but there is one thing that is doing my head in and I wonder if there is a way to stop it or fix it. Basically the "i" key on my keyboard is super sensitive and I don't need to push it down, just slightly touching it types an "i" and means I keep accidentally typing an "i" just because I accidentally touched it. Does anyone have the same problem and do you know if there is a way of fixing it?!

Answer:I key on Ideapad z500

should also mention I don't know if this is a feature of the laptop considering the "i" is a commonly used key??

Answer:ideapad z500

hi Safi2905,

Welcome to the Forums.

You might want to follow this thread and apply this battery firmware update to address the battery concerns. As for the fan kicking in at power up, this is most likely a thermal design to keep the laptop running cool - unless you're hearing rattling / grinding noise that might indicate a faulty fan, otherwise, this is normal.

Not sure if I should be posting in the IdeaPad forum or Windows 8.1. Have IdeaPad U430 Touch with Windows 8 preinstalled. Trying to install the 13 drivers that appear on the Drivers and Software download page in preparation for upgrading to Windows 8.1. All seemed to install okay except for wl07wb.exe (WLAN) and bt09wb.exe (Bluetooth). After installing the updates, according to Device Manager neither driver was updated. There was no error message for the Bluetooth driver, but with the WLAN driver there was the following error message: "Problems starting AmpInst.dll. Specific module could not be found". Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

Remove all of the previous installations of the WLAN and Bluetooth drivers. Update them from the Intel Website here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&Produc...

I tried to post this yeaterday but it seems it didn't get through: I have attempted to update my Z500 from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro but have found Network Adapters, Card Reader and AHCI controller have gone missing. I have downloaded replacement drivers as best I can to get the wireless connection working. Now Windows action centre diagnostics tells me 'Wireless hardware is not bound to transport driver'. Lenovo Solution Centre lists 3 problems: 1) CRITICAL ? Software update alert, you never updated Windows. 2) Recovery media alert: Lenovo recovery media is not installed. 3) Backup alert. All of these have a button 'Fix Options' so for problem 1 I get after launch 'No updates are available'. For problem 2 I get 'download' which takes me to the Lenovo support centre which gives no information on the problem whatsoever. For problem 3 I backed up to an external drive both prior to and after the download. Are all these Lenovo solutions dead ends? The previous day I did the same update on my Compaq PC without single problem.

Hi,I have z500 ideapad with 6 GB ram,1TB HDD and i5 processor...could you please tell me till which memry system will support...shall I upgrade to 12 GB8gb and 4 GB in two slotsPlease adviceThanks,Rajesh

Answer:Z500 ideapad RAM upgrade

hi Rajesh,

Welcome to the Forums.

From page 26 of the HMM, the Z500 can take up to:

Standard  Memory ? DDR3-1600/1333MHz SODIMM Ũ 2 (max 16 GB)

A 12GB (8GB+4GB) upgrade is also feasible but if the machine came with 4GB (2GBx2), I would go for an 8GB(4GBx2) or 16GB (8GBx2) depending on your needs and workload.

It says that the device cannot start. Tried to udate the driver, but it says that the driver is up to date. I have Windows 8.1. The other 2 USB 2.0 ports work fine. Any idea? Hi,

My one month old z500 fails to boot and gives an error message saying "DEFAULT BOOT DEVICE MISSING OR BOOT FAILED."

This happened after i had to force my pc to shut down by pressing and holding the power button because it hadn't been responding for a while and I was only browsing on the web. When I attempted to restart it I encountered that error message

I suspect it's a hdd related problem because when I enter BIOS it says "not detected" in front of "Hard Disk" caption. That means hard disk is not recognized by BIOS. I tried one key recovery but it's useles cause nothing happens when I press okr button.

What do you think this is caused by and what should be done to recover my pc.

Thanks in advance...  Sorry for bad English.

Product key is stored in BIOS, so there is no need to use any app to read it.Download a tool to create bootable media from Microsoft website and install Windows 8.1 using it:https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8 Moreover at first, you may try to restore your Windows 10 to factory state (do a backup of all important data first). Hello!I bought my new Lenovo Ideapad Z500 only two weeks ago and since than it works fine, however yesterday it produced a very strange error. When I turn on my laptop it stops when the Lenovo logo shows up and freezes. The worst problem is that, it doesn't happen every time I turn it on, so when I bruoght it back to the shop, it was working fine again, and after I arrived home, it did the same error. It wasn't only a one time experience, I've tried it at least ten times, and it stopped on the Lenovo logo over and over again. I send it back to the service, however, I am curious whether I'm the only one facing with this weird issue or not. Thank you for your time!Best regards to all!

Hi abodialansi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This configuration with the RAM is OK

Based on the Datasheet of your model This can go to 8GB / 16GB
Ive highlighted the option you prefer with the RAM

About the Discrete NVIDIA GPU, Itis soldered to the Mainboard thus not letting any upgrade to it.
Upgrading the board means upgrading the whole Motherboard, which might not be preferred since it may only give you a minimal upgrade in terms of performance.

Hope this info helped

Answer:USB boot for Ideapad Z500

Hi,

I don't think I can be of much help, but a couple of things to try:  if your USB flash drive is formatted NTFS, it will only boot in legacy mode if it is bootable at all.  One thing you might try is to set the partition active if it isn't already.

If you want to boot in UEFI mode, format the flash drive with a single FAT32 partition.  Copy the contents of your install DVD to the flash drive.  If you're using an ISO copy the contents of the iso using a tool like 7zip.  UEFI bootabiliyt doesn't require using a special tool to prep the drive.  Just format it and copy the install medium to it.

Win7 requires CSM support in bios to boot successfully in UEFI mode.  That may always be enabled in UEFI mode or it may be a separate option in BIOS.

Hi, I am in the market for a new laptop and have narrowed my choices to the Sony Vaio S here http://bit.ly/TAPlYC with Windows 8 Pro and 1 year of support as perhaps the only upgrades and the IdeaPad z500s here http://lnv.gy/WtWizp . I am upset that Lenovo does not offer the 7200 rpm option for the hard drive nor a higher screen resoltion. I personally think the 1920 x 1080 on the Viao S is a bit too high, but the 1366x768 of the z500 is way way way too low in my opinion. I want to love lenovo because the community seems great, but the lack of upgrade options is troubling.  Also, a more general question: I am a web developer that does php/html/css editing/developing using a text editor (not heavy ones like Dreamweaver), watches netflix and listens to things like Spotify. Are the HD 4000 Graphics good enough for me? I know RAM is helpful here, but I like to buy my own RAM because it's fun hunting for it (thats why I dont need an 8GB lenovo option to buy) Any thoughts/advice? Thanks, James

Answer:IdeaPad Z500 - low specs?

hi James,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

If you're leaning to the Lenovo Z500, the built-in HD 4000 graphics will be good enough for any php/html programming (especially if you use editors) as this embedded graphics card is on par with the AMD Radeon HD 7520G (based on 3D benchmark).

The screen size though is something that can't be customized but the HDD, you can. If you want fast boot-up,and response time pf your programs you might wanna consider switching to SSD as it's 2-3 times faster than a regular HDD and you can get an enclosure to convert your HDD as an external drive or make your system a hyrid drive (SSD as primary, HDD as secondary, you will need this:

Can I go into floppy drive format and create a ms dos start up disk?Any help appreciated.dagwoood.

Answer:Problem updating bios in xp.

You need to boot using a boot disk, eg one from bootdisk.com (a standard win98 disk is fine) and have another floppy with the BIOS upgrade on it.But a word of warning: only blash the BIOS if it is vital that you do so. It is getting easier and more reliable these days, but nonetheless, not a procedure to be lightly undertaken.

I try to upgrade the motherboard BIOS (the model is the MSI GF615M-P33)

but when I go to flash and write me the command(mode with automatic update does not exist since the model is very old) it gives me the following message:

"Flash part is not supported"

How can I fix it ?

Answer:Problem updating BIOS

Welcome to our forum spinalgr1990.

Are you having a problem that you think updating bios will solve?

Are you trying to update the bios exactly as the motherboard instructs you to.

These are just some basic question that need to be answered no matter what motherboard you have.

What are the bios you have now?

Is this the exact message you receive?

Hello All,

I saw this tread which included some issues with AHCI and I have a few questions.

I recently upgraded my bios on my 965P-DS3 V3.3 motherboard from F10 to the newer F12 version. I went straight into settings and tweaked the Bios per a guide I found on hardocp forums.

I enable AHCI, and set some other SATA settings (my current drive was plugged into an orange socket). Rebooted, XP was sluggish to load and then blue screened. I then disabled AHCI and rebooted using optimized defaults. Only now I'm experiencing very loooooong load times on just about anything. Games, apps, the HDD light is on but it doesn't seem to be reading all the time. Things will eventually load but it's taking 10x as long as usual. So the HDD works, but something is definitely screwy.

So my question is due I revert back to F10 Bios, or do a windows repair or roll back to a restore point, or did I seriously screw up my HDD??? I think I know my course of action (roll back the bios), but I just wanted some more info before I take that risk and frustration of potentially screwing it up. So if anyone has a similar experience with the HDD and this board, plz let me know how you fixed it. Prior to the Bios Update things seemed to be working fine.

Thanks,
Jack

We ran into another problem. The motherboard will not recognize the new processor. We cannot update the drivers from a cd or thru windows itself because it will not even boot from anything. It will just go to the main bootup screen and give us a "unknown processor revision" message. We have tried booting to a dos startup floppy disk, but we'v had no luck.

Iam having problems updating my bios. 1. My floppy drive would not format a new floppy disc. a. So therefore would not create a recovery disc for me. 2. what is the correct procedure to update my bios?

Answer:Problem updating bios!

was the floppy write protected maybe(move the little tab on the disk)a floppy start up disk will not save you if a bios flash goes wrong.its dead motherboard time.most bios updates are downloaded to a floppy disk and then you would have to set the floppy drive as the first boot device and boot from it to flash the bios.some new boards you can even flash the bios from within windows itself.you will first need to know the EXACT make and model no.of your motherboard and download the EXACT bios update for it.the motherboard manufacturers website should have all the info you need to do this.can i ask why you want to flash the bios?its usually only nesessary if installing very new hardware in an older system that otherwise would not work without updating the bios like a very large hard drive that isnt recognised properly for example.

Hi there, I want to replace my device's default screen panel (1366x768) with a FULL HD (1920 x 1080) panel. I didn't open the case of my laptop to see the serial of the panel cause of warranty situations. I've talked with local Lenovo technical service in here to replace it but i learned that they don't have any screen panel replacement service for my laptop model. So i want to change it myself with a suitable panel.  There're some different panels written in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for this device; HD-AG, AUO B156XTN03.4 HW0A HD AG S LED1 NB LCD 18200763HD-AG, CMI N156BGE-LA1 HD AG S LED1 NB LCD 18200764HD-AG, BOE HB156WX1-600 HD AG S LED1 NB LCD 18200765HD-AG, SDC 156AT29-401 HD AG S LED1 NB LCD 18200706HD-AG, LGD LP156WHU-TLB1 HD AG S LED1 NB LCD 18200766HD -G, AUO B156XTN03.2 HD G S LED1 NB LCD 18200449HD -G, CMI N156BGE-LB1 HD G S LED1 NB LCD 18200450HD -G, BOE HB156WX1-500 HD G S LED1 NB LCD 18200767HD -G, SDC 156AT29-L01 HD G S LED1 NB LCD 18200705HD -G, LGD LP156WHU-TLA1 HD G S LED1 NB LCD 18200768 I don't know which one is attached. I'll be glad if any Support Specialist can assist me to find out which panel is attached to my device right now. I have also tried a system recovery attempted an intital as I did not have on saved and that didn't work either. Does anyone have any experience with this issue and/or can advise? Thanks in advance.

Hi, my sons Z500 screen has cracked and I am after a replacement screen. This is the non touch sensitive screen and has a gloss finish. Could anyone tell me if Lenovo used just one screen for this laptop or if they used a couple of different types of screens during manufacture, like some other companies. I know I can remove the old screen to have a look at the specs, but my son is still using the laptop with an external monitor and would prefer me not to take his precious computer apart until I have the new screen. Any help will be very appreciated.many thanksIan

I have a z500. I updated from win8 to win8.1. But I cant seem to increase the brightness.. It is interesting because the other hot keys work correctly. I've even upped the brightness in the Control Panel, but nothing seems to work. I pressed the f12 key once, while not holding fn (the key thats supposed to increase brightness). The brightness was instantly turned to minimum and I cant turn it up again. The f11 key for brightness decrease seems to do nothing. I would really like a solution to this problem fast since its really hard to see anything on the screen with the brightness turned all the way down. I  tried to increase brightness with and without Lenovo Energy Management in Win8.1 and in BIOS, but  nothing changed.

hi fadhil,

Sorry to hear what happened,

Open Device Manager and open the Display Adapter category.

  > Right click on your Intel HD Graphics and choose Update Driver,
           >Select Browse My Computer
                 >Then Select Let me pick from a list of device driver

You will have a list of drivers try selecting one and apply it then try adjusting the brightness
If it did not work Try the Update driver again and select another driver from the list and check.

Hope this helps

I've always had blue screens periodically with this laptop - had it just over a year now - but they never really bothered me. Until this morning when I woke up and tried to turn it on, after a lengthy loadup screen with the lenovo logo it went straight to a blue screen. As soon as the screen came up the laptop shut off, not giving me time to see what the error code is. When it restarts it tries to boot up system repair then goes to a black screen for ~10 minutes before blue screening and promptly restarting again. This time the restart is like the first time, straight to blue screen, then the repair to blue screen again. It just repeats this process over and over. I'm running windows 8 (not 8.1) and F8ing on the startup screen doesn't work, any help please?

Hello, I want to know whether Edge Scrolling using the touch pad mouse on Lenovo Z500 Touch is possible.  When I try to adjust the settings on my ELAN Pointing Device options, I see Edge Swipe, but not Edge Scrolling.  I just bought this laptop, but I made sure that I do have the latest drivers for my touch pad.  Moreover, I think this feature was meant to be included in the software because the registry options and demonstration videos suggest Edge Scrolling is possible under this hardware and software.  So what gives? I strongly dislike having to use two fingers to scroll on my touch pad instead of being able to use the edges.  This is a pretty basic feature on most laptops these days, and I used to use it daily on my previous Lenovo laptop.  If I can't have it on this new computer, I will probably return it.  I appreciate any help in resolving this.

Hello, I just bought a new Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 and it has a 15.6 inch mate display, before this I had a laptop with glossy display, so I see something strange and I don't know if this makes the difference between a mate and a glossy type of display but mine, if i have a one color wallpaper or in places where a single color predominates on a larger surface, I can see some minuscule squares(like the matrix of the display or something) on the entire display, is this a problem with the display? Thank you in advance!

hi allexif,

Welcome to the Forums.

Your issue might be similar to this thread.

Can you try to download and install Passmark's BurnInTest standard edition and do a burn-in test on your CPU and GPU (2D and 3D tests) for 15mins and observe.

The image of the test should be smooth as the one below::

If you get granules on the image like the one below, there's most likely a GPU rendering issue and you may need to contact lenovo or the vendor to report the issue:
