I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Z510 'Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed' after BIOS update

You should probably reset your BIOS since I believe it is messed up now. Take out the battery.Press the power button for a minute. (just to make sure it is reset, usually 20-30 seconds work)Connect the battery and boot.

Recently had my computer crash and come up with this message. Went through the bios and discovered the hard disk was not being recognized. So I opened it up and unplugged/replugged it in. It is still giving me the same message and wanting me to boot from a network, but now in the bios it is recognizing the hard disk. Any other ideas?  Thanks a ton in advance for anyones help!!

Hi Oldsm66 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.
You may want to check for the hard drive integrity .
If you have a spare harddrive to boot from or use a rescue USB drive to boot into and run diagnotics .
You can also try to back up your files from the original harddrive once booted from the rescue media if needed.

Hi,

I have a Yoga 2 pro.

I recently formatted my drive and got rid of all partitions. The reinstalled windows 8.

Everything worked fine until I went to the bios and changed it from legacy support to uefi boot.

I now get this pop up when i boot up.
Default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select 'boot manager' to choose a new boot device or boot recovery media.

I have no reccovery media.

I tried to restart the mchine while pressing F2 but I always get into the same screen.

If I press enter I then go from the pop up to the boot manager where the list is empty so i cannot boot any other drives since there are non to select.

I am not sure what else to do...

Please help.

I just bought a lenovo laptop, which came with preinstalled Windows 8.
When I turn it on the first thing I see is:
EFI network 0 for IPv4 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed
Checking media (Fail)
EFI network 0 for IPv6 (20-89-84-23-c3-45) boot failed

And then a blue screen:
Default Boot Device Missing or boot failed
Insert recovery media and hit any key
Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media

What should I do?
Thank you!

Answer:Yoga 2 pro default boot device missing or boot failed

hi Richarddaou,

When you boot into the BIOS, is the SSD is detected in the Information tab?
 - Link to image

If it is then you may want to consider reloading the OS by pressing the OneKey Recovery button.
 - Link to image

Otherwise, if the SSD is not being detected anymore then this is a sign of an HDD failure and you need to contact lenovo (for service) or the place of purchase (if it's still possible to exchange the unit).

Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed on U430

hi there,

Welcome to the Forums.

The Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed means that it can't find the files needed to load Windows. These files maybe missing, or the HDD itself is faulty.

Things that you can try:
Boot into the BIOS by pressing Fn+F2 on boot-up and verify that the HDD is detected.
   - Link to picture

If the HDD is detected, you can do one of the following:

If you have a created a recovery drive then you can use it to restore Windows.
Press the OneKey Recovery button to restore the factory settings (note that all data on the OS partition will be wiped out)
If the machine came with Windows 8.1, you can check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One) then follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD/USB flashdrive and use it to re-install Windows

If the HDD is not detected then you may need to contact lenovo on how to go about getting the unit for serviced.

I have a Lenovo G50 80L0 laptop and lately I have been getting the "Windows Boot Manager" and "EFI IPv4/6" failed messages. I have looked at many different things, but have run out of options. I cleaned out most of my laptop with compressed air and even cleaned the Hard Drive the best I could. My laptop is less than a year old, and I have no warranty since I bought it refurbished. Here are some things that might be helpful to know:

I hear clicking noises inside the laptop when I start it up, I'm pretty sure it is the fan
My laptop spends alot of time asleep rather than off
I have gotten it to work before, but I have no idea how
I have tried switching boot methods, but they all fail

Please help if you know anything. I really don't want to have to pay money to get this fixed, and HDD's are way too expensive.

Answer:G50 - Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

Hi Tristin_Wagg ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Just to set expectation , such maybe the harddrive failing hoping that its just a corrupt bootable Windows.
You can try checking on the BIOS by turning off the laptop and using the novo button (item2 page9) to power on .
BIOS set up on the main page should show the harddrive , if not you may need to reseat ( remove and put back firmly inside making sure that the contacts are good (page37) .

Usually counter checking harddrive detection by placing it on an enclosure then plugging it on another computer can help to check . Would there still be any clicking noise without the harddrive?

Answer:default boot device missing or boot failed

You can try Hiren's boot cd, using Mini XP to boot and try to check if your HDD is still working and save some data on an external USB pen or HDD. http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip just unzip and burn the .iso on a USB pen (you can use Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US ) or CD.

I am having a Boot Device Missing / Boot Failed problem with my nearly new B50-80 Lenovo. I turn power off and on again and it says 'Checking Media'....then does circular route to Boot Device Missing then I'm unable to use any keys (like arrow) to select something other than 'EFI PXE Network' and it goes right back to 'Checking media' then 'Boot Device Missing / Boot Failed' or 'EFI Network 0 for IPv4 boot failed'

I cannot check any menu's or do anything other than hit return. HELP!

Answer:B50-80 - Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

The first step would be to reset the bios.   FN+ F2 to get to the bios, then reset to factory spec.  There are rare times this will help.  If you still can't boot after the bios reset and have a warranty?  Time to contact Lenovo. The next step would be to use a boot cd or usb drive and run a drive diagnostic.  I've been using Steve Gibsons drive rite for years, it's not free and I'm not familiar with anything else to make a recommendation.   That should narrow it down to either a software/drive corruption issue  (easy) or the drive and/or the drive controller (hard).  Good Luck!

You should not be changing them unless you are prepared for surprises like the one that you already encountered. You did not mention why you made the change but you did mention that you want to reformat. Reformatting can be done without changing UEFI to Legacy. Your objective now should be to go back to bios and put back those settings to the original condition. How? you have to find a way on how to do it. You might remove the original hdd and replace it with a temporary one just so you can go to the bios and make the chnages. The removed hdd should be diagnosed in another unit for a possible repair.

Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

Hi mzayas ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The main concern here is the hardware detection of the motherboard that there is a connected harddrive.
BIOS should at least show it , but if the harddrive itself is bad or maybe the contact in-between then repair options would not work.

It would help reseating the harddrive ( remove and check the contacts and place it back in ).

As per your data hoping that it is not a bad harddrive , slaving it on a harddrive enclosure to connect to a different pc or have a service recovery center back it for you .

After reseating the harddrive , load back to BIOS and check if the harddrive is detected , F9 to reset defaults F10 to save and exit .

If still stays non detected then tech support most likely be replacing the harddrive so you can inform them that you have important file on it that you wish to try back up.

Not sure if this question has been answered before but my laptop screen is displaying this message:
"Default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or boot recovery media."

I don't know how this happened or how to fix it, I read online that I would need to access the BIOS setup. I did this but it prompted me to put in a password and I don't know what it is.
Any advice would be really helpful, I need it fixed asap.

Since I'm using someone else's laptop at the moment I don't have the technical specifications but it is an Acer Aspire V5 series Windows 8.
Thank you in advance!

Answer:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

hi anaskou,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is there any external USB devices plugged-in to the system? If yes, try to remove it and observe. Otherwise, when you boot into the BIOS, is the HDD getting detected?

- Link to picture

From the looks of it, it's either the OS is corrupted or the HDD is failing. If the HDD is detected under the BIOS, consider pressing the OneKey Recovery button to reload the OS (all data will be re-written). If this fails, you may need to contact lenovo and report the issue.

I have a y500 Lenovo gaming laptop with Windows 8, and for the past couple of days, each time my laptop is put in hibernation or powered down, whenever I turn it back on it gives me this message:"Default Boot Device Missing or boot failedInsert recovery media and hit any key Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device to boot or recovery media."Then it brings me to a page with 3 boot options, and only the Windows Boot Manager works. I'm doing scans and hardware scans but so far nothing is being found. This laptop is less than 2 months old so I really don't think it's a hardware problem, and I haven't downloaded anything recently that may have messed this up. I would contact Lenovo but I'm unsure if this is an issue with the laptop, or Windows 8. Any ideas?

Hi phelly ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The IT guys may have also checked the BIOS if the SSD is being detected.
Usually reseating the M.2 SSD (page 36) from its location and placing it back assuring that contacts are ok can help as well as loading the BIOS defaults then restart.

If you would be having the same issue , I would suggest to call in technical support or have a representative in UK start a repair ticket for you and get their recommendation.

I have a usb recovery media and also have signed up with Acer cloud. With my recovery media I have tried to Refresh and Reset my PC as to no avail. When i try a System Restore is gives me  an error and says "you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart, select operating system, and then select System Restore." Unfortunately there is no operatingsystem to select when I restart. I am very concerned about losing the data on my hard drive, it is more valueable than the drive itself. Answer:Can't boot from harddrive after bios update [Z510]

Hermonella wrote:Hi I just updated my bios on my Z510, and now the only boot options i have is network boot, something that i don't use.i used the bios update tool that Lenovo is distrubiting from the drivers page for my PC. Can anyone help me with this? After updating the bios, try setting everything to default then save. Then change some of the settings back to the time you have not yet updated the bios. Save and exit. Since you don't want network boot try disabling this in the bios.

I have a Yoga 2 11 laptop and just recently it started giving me the default boot device missing  error. I would just restart my laptop once or twice and it would boot fine.  Soon after,  that solution  didn't work.  So I changed the boot settings to legacy first and that worked for a few days.  Now nothing works.  I've tried resetting the bios settings and redoing legacy support. I've tried using Lenovo button and do a system restore/recovery but it asks for me to restart and choose an operating system first. Ive tried creating a  bootable usb and do a startup repair, but I would get a boot file missing  error. I tried just reinstalling windows completely and every time I try,  it isn't able to detect my harddrive to install windows on.  However if I check Bios, the bios detects the harddrive.  Any solutions?  I do not want to send it in,  I rather repair myself.  Do I need a new harddrive?

OK my lenovo z500 gives this message on start-up:"default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key. Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media" I have a WD passport plugged into one of the usb slots and this has my recovery media. When I hit any key it doesn't recognise it. I only get EFI Network 0 for IPv4 or EFI Network 0 for IPv6. Then it checks media and says "No bootable device please restart system". So, I have checked the BIOS and the hard disk is not recognised. I have enabled USB boot but it still doesn't recognise my passport. I'm going mad trying to work out what to do. Any ideas please?

The next thing when you boot with the WD passport inserted in the usb port you receive the error message could mean that your WD passort is not bootable. Try using a bootable flash drive and see if you can boot even in dos just to confirm that the WD passort is not bootable.

Hi there,    Recently I encountered a major problem with my laptop. The laptop suddenly went into diagnosing mode and repairing the hard drive screens but because the blue screen still popped up ( with the error message and an indication to restart) after numerous times,  I made the hasty decision decision to switch of the laptop via the power button.  After reswitching it on, the "Default hoot device missing" error came up and I am no longer able to boot windows.  I understand that this problem has been mentioned by other members before but they don't seem to have landed themselves in this problem the same way. I've tried some of the solutions listed but they have all failed. Really need some help urgently as I have some important files on the laptop that I need to access.  My windows liscence is STD, which I think is different from what other people who had this error has. Thanks!

Hi, I am running Windows 8.1, and a couple of days back, my computer which was running smoothly, went to the blue screen. It gave the error: default boot device missing or boot failed. Press Enter to choose the bootable device. However, when I press enter, there are no options to choose from, no list. I am assuming this is a BIOS error (I hate SSDs now) since I did not further update my BIOS from v2.05.  Pressing F2 during boot does nothing, I will try to press F12 and see if that gives me boot options. I have also made a USB BIOS bootable drive. However, I do not know how to proceed (a novice). Can anyone please advise, please tell me, if possible, a few options, as the first option generally never works (personal view that things are not that easy). Thanks a lot in advance. SusmitP.S. If you need any further system information, kindly let me know.

if F2 doesn't work, connect your USB bootable pen, reboot and press F12.you can try to press ALT+F10 at boot and check if Acer erecovery works. if this doesn't work, probably the SSD died, if you are under warranty, i suggest you to contact the Acer support service.

Hi

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

My computer completely locked up while playing a game and I had to do a hard reboot. Now I continuously get the error:

"Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

The only thing I can manage to pull up is the CMOS Setup Utility. Looking through the menu I found the Boot sequence menu; however, the only device listed is cd/dvd and I read that hard drive should be listed.

Any ideas on a possible problem?

I am thinking that my hard drive might be shot because I am almost positive it is not due to loose cables. On the other hand I was thinking that it could possibly be due to a virus because I had found a Trojan earlier with my virus scanner.

Appreciate any feedback I can get.

Hello,

In last few days I've been getting a blue screen of death with the error "whea_uncorrectable_error", I read something about updating BIOS because the error is probably caused by old version of BIOS. I did the update correctly but as soon as my laptop restarted, nothing was booting.

The fan and the keyboard are working but nothing else. I tried removing the RAM, removing the CMOS battery, pulling the main battery out and holding the power button, but nothing seems to be working.

Can you please help me and tell me how to recover my BIOS?

Answer:Satellite C660D won't boot - BIOS update failed

because the error is probably caused by old version of BIOS.

Old BIOS version does not cause BSOD… … the BSOD appeared during the last day but I guess the notebook worked properly in the past in connection with the old BIOS version... therefore the BIOS could not be the problem here…

However, fact is that the notebook is dead now… probably because the update process has been interrupted due to the BSOD…

From my point of few the EPROM should be re-flashed again using BIOS crisis disk…

Some people has already tried to fix such similar issue using 3rd party crisis disk (use forum search for crisis disk to find similar threads) but this did not work always…

Therefore I think that in most cases only the Toshiba ASP could be able to reflash the EMPRO using the original crisis disk

Hi mate

Seems something went wrong during the BIOS update procedure.
Usually the BIOS update should run properly but BIOS update is always sensitive procedure and something like that can happen.

Usually the CMOS has to be cleared firstly and then the ROM module should be flashed again. This can be done only by an ASP!

Get in contact with an local ASP? the guys would help you?!

Hi everyone,

I have tried to update the bios of a P300 using this :
18/03/10
BIOS Update
Toshiba Windows 7 - 32 Bit 4.20-WIN32 World Wide
Which I downloaded from here: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK after entering my laptops specifications.

The flash process hanged during the update and the laptop became unbootable, blank screen when powering on and nothing else...
I tried using the Phoenix Emergency Crisis application, created a floppy disk with the Bios image file that I have earlier downloaded but managed nothing.

The USB floppy driver access the floppy when entering the recovery mode, I hear some beeps that indicate that a process takes places, but when everything stops and reboot...the problem remains.

-Has anyone got a clue what to do next?
-Is the warranty void after a bios update attempt?

Thank you for yor time.

The guys could clean CMOS and could flash the BIOS ROM module using an special crisis BIOS disk?

Having lots of issues with a new Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming motherboard. After swapping out the old board I had trouble booting to Windows 10-64bit. I did manage to update my Windows license by calling MS but have other issues. My new CPU is a AMD Ryzen 7 1700. The BIOS was version F4. It was suggested a BIOS update to F5 was needed. I did the update within BIOS & when it got to about 90% finished it suddenly said it would reboot in 10 seconds. After reboot I was briefly able to use the mouse & go back into BIOS & noticed it did not update to F5. The mouse suddenly froze & keyboard doesn't work either. Now, it apparently does not recognize any hardware (USB, where the keyboard & mouse are plugged into) & boots to the blue Windows screen but no further. Suggestions, please HELP!

Answer:BIOS update failed now doesn't recognize hardware or boot Win 10

The GA-AB350 has a dual BIOS, which is supposed to protect against bad BIOS updates. However, I think that its functioning is automatic; I don't spot any way of manually causing the use of the backup BIOS.

I had a similar problem with one of my first UEFI motherboards. Automatic dual BIOS, but the backup BIOS never came into play. II ended up returning the board.

No guarantees that this will help, but have you tried clearing the CMOS? There's a jumper for that, or you can do it by removing the CMOS battery for a minute. See the manual. (Downloadable as a PDF, if you don't have a paper copy.)

If that doesn't work, you may have to repair or replace the board. The BIOS EEPROM chips look like they are soldered to the board, so you can't simply replace them.

Good luck.

Hi,

Well, BIOS problems can be solved only by an Toshiba authorized service partner.
I assume the ROM module where the BIOS is stored, has not been flashed properly.
The Rom module can be flashed again using an special crisis disk.

Therefore I see just one real option for you: get in contact with the service guy to get it fixed.

Answer:Satellite P100-240 wont boot up after failed BIOS update

Hi mate,

Thats a bit of a problem... If your machine really won?t boot up and no screen comes up, then your BIOS was probably damaged.

I would really recommend you to contact an [authorized service partner|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_whitepaper.jsp?service=EU&WHITEPAPER_ID=0 000000871] and tell them your problem. Hi everyone. Please help out here. I have an HP Pavilion G6-1d40ca. It crashed the other day while I was using it, and when I restarted it, it went to BIOS update. It froze while updating, and died in itself (I think the battery died, it wasn't plugged in. I never knew about BIOS update, so I wasn't expecting for the battery to die during the update, so I didn't plug it in.) Second time, booted it up (it was plugged in this time), and went into BIOS update once again. All's good, was able to use the laptop for about five minutes, then it crashed once again. Now, when I boot it up, nothing comes up on the screen. No nothing. The power button is on, the wi-fi is on, the LED light is blinking non-stop, more than 6 times than what is referred to the HP website.

I tried doing the remove battery and adapter, press power button for 30 seconds, plug it in without the battery, but to no avail. I also did the whole win+B, but doesn't work either. I tried pressing f11, but nothing comes up on the screen. I don't remember where I put the recovery discs that came with the laptop. The thing is, I don't know where to begin, since I don't have anything on the screen itself. Not even a start-up logo or something.

Answer:Failed BIOS update,HP pavilionG6 won't boot up and only black screen

Did you run a BIOS update, because it wouldn't restart into one. What exactly did the screen say that made you think it was a BIOS update being done without running it yourself (unheard of).

What LED light is blinking nonstop?

Can you boot into HP Factory Recovery: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

You can try these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot which will tell you if you can boot a disk to do repairs. If so besides links to the Win7 installer to use for repairs, there are also links to HD and RAM bootable CD tests to check your hardware.

But if this cannot get traction quickly what I would do with such a new rig is call HP Tech Support and have them walk you through steps to determine if it should be returned or if there is a known issue.

Hi everyone,

The problem I have is really strange. I updated my BIOS from my computer manufacturer's homepage. After doing so, I had to reboot my pc. However, once my pc rebooted, a similar message as the following appeared: Press F8 to select boot device. If I would not press F8 my pc would not start up at all. Yet, when I pressed F8 it gave me a list of boot devices to select from. I selected the HDD drive, which in the end worked out perfectly, since i could restart my computer without any problems.

So you guys might wonder now why I am posting this here, if there is not a problem. Well, every time I start up my pc it asks me to press F8 and start up my pc from the specific boot device. I have managed to make my pc reboot automatically, without having to press F8 every single time.

However, how can I remove the F8 screen from showing up?

Before I run the BIOS update it never said press F8 to select boot device.
Is there any way to remove this screen or skip it? It is really annoying and delaying my computer start up.
Thank you very much in advance!
regards,
Trock

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know, that after updating to the latest bios firmware, my U330 said, that it could not find any boot devices. The solution is pretty straight forward, just enter the bios (which is Fn + F2, even if you changed the Fn thingy before). I think, the only thing I changed was, using legacy instead of UEFI and that worked. Kinda strange since especially the windows 8 bootloader should support uefi. Just wanted to let you guys know, in case you experience the same issue.

I used the AOMEI Partition Assistant Home to resize C to 150 GB and after that I assigned the 250 GB/each of my 3 new partitions which I need for my files. After applying changes, restarting and resizing the space, AOMEI told that it's required to restart for further resizing process. When computer finished the loading process, the blue screen appeared (with " ") that says "system encountered problems with boot-up and will be re-run, check Inaccessible boot device error" (I don't remember the accurate message but such is the sense of) and so he does but after another restart this message apperas one more time and so on. I've tried to start a recovery but when I run computer with NOVO button and afterch choosing recovery, the system says "Lenovo recovery system boot failed" and then computer starts the "normal" boot proces (which lead to the problem described above). As soon as I know (at least I guess so) where is problem, I have no idea how can I repair this.I'll be very grateful If someone will help me.Gaclav

Answer:Inaccessible boot device and Recovery system boot failed after resizing partition

Hi Gaclav,

Thanks for posting and welcome back to the Lenovo Community,

I?d like to confirm to you that the recovery won?t be working more as you?ve performed resized for the partition and changed the Hard disk size which cause the recovery to be corrupted,

And the only way to get the recovery the system back will be contacting contact support and am afraid to tell you that it would be billable repair at the service center:

Hi there,

I've recently built a new rig and I've had continuous problems trying to boot. I have two HDDs and one SDD. It seems when the two HDDs are plugged in, i can sometimes boot ok, and most times i get:

Quote:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Status: 0xc000000e

Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Or

Please select a boot device, or something to the affect.

I've updated to the latest bios on my new mobo ( Gigabyte z97x SOC Force ) and ive done a fresh install of windows several times on the SDD. I also ran crystal disk to check health on the SDD and it came back healthy.

It seems mostly my boot problems are linked to plugging in the two other HDDs, though I've no idea why this would be, and how to fix it? Is it a motherboard problem or a HDD problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Story of my life..I'm confused. I updated my BIOS as I was having a problem mentioned in one of the updates. I was using the Easyflash2 by Asus and the update succeeded but when it re-booted I got the awful news..boot mgr missing. Would my best bet be to just re-image? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Boot manager missing after BIOS update

Hello mate.

Start by having a look through this tutorial at the link below, if doing the 3 separate startup repairs doesn't sort the issue, you may have to use the outlines in Option Two to mark the Windows 7 partition as Active and then do the startup repairs again; be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

I am for sure gonna get kicked out of this forum for being so annoying. I hope not, because some of the smartest people I have found are in this great forum.

Anyway, I did something I know was newbie-stupid wrong. I tried the ASUS EZ Update from within Win 7 to update my ASUS Crosshair V Formula BIOS to the newest version which is #1701. I know ASUS touts this as The Way. From my experience, though, it is not - it really screwed things up. I will never do this again, I can assure you!

*****
System: ASUS Crosshair V Formula with AMD 6-core and 16 GB of DDR-3 RAM; 128 GB SSD, many WDD HDD's.
*****

So I did things the "right way" - flashed the bios to #1703 with a USB stick. Been there, done that before several times, so no problem.

After doing so, however, and I choose to blame the EZ Update for this problem, I couldn't boot with my Boot Settings as CD/DVD ROM (#1) ---> SSD (#2).

That should be normal boot order. I mean Duh! on that one. But it would not boot, so I naturally thought the Win 7 Boot Loader was corrupted (still might be, dunno).

Anyway, I tried the obvious, ie set the BIOS to optimal defaults (oh and yes, the BIOS had updated properly to #1703). Took a look at the boot order and it was the biggest mess imaginable. Order was scrambled with the SSD way down the list and a bunch of HDD's higher in priority on the boot order list. DVD was way down in the order too. "Windows Boot Manager" was #1

Now here's the kicker: The system will no ... Read more

Answer:BIOS Update - Boot Loader Missing

Did everything work correctly before you flashed the BIOS ?

It is quite possible that W7 is corrupted in some way or other. I've only ever flashed my BIOS a couple of times, and each time I've done it outside the OS. The main problem with doing it in Windows is that Windows relies on some of the information provided by the BIOS in order to function, and updating the BIOS causes this information to momentarily disappear.

Tried two different BIOS updates with same result. Made sure boot order was correct. WIN 10 tries repair, asks to reboot, then inaccessible boot device error is given. SSD, Gigabyte Z77-D3H MB.

Answer:How can I fix a Windows 10 error .. inaccessible boot device after BIOS update?

A BIOS update should not mess with the boot loader. Check your BIOS settings, the updated might have reset some advanced boot options. Check to see if secure boot or virtualization needs to be disabled.

Hi,

I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Answer:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Hi

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

Hi! Yesterday I updated my bios from F.26 to F.29. What made me switch was the "Note: HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version. " Apparently some major security issues were fixed so i downloaded the installer and ran it, everything went fluently as it seemed. Last thing it did was writing boot block or something and then it rebooted and i was prompted with: Boot Device Not FoundPlease Install an operating system on your hard diskHard Disk (3F0)F2 System Diagnostics For more information please visit: hp.com/go/techcenter/startup Did the Diagnostic Tests - Everything passed (memory, hdd) Restored Factory Default from Bios. Also, I changed the boot order from  the BIOS, it still failed to boot. Then I switched legacy mode to enabled. Hi,
I really appreciate the good design of Dell Inspiration 7353 laptop, it's good, mostly indeed.
Recently I have a problem to use legacy boot (USB, DVD/CD, Internal HD, whatever), after I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest one (Inspiron_3153_3158_7353_7359_7568_1.13.0). Due to legacy boot is required in my daily work, so I will ask for help, see if anyone can give me a solution.
When I used the laptop without any BIOS upgrade, it can boot from any legacy driver (USB, etc) with Windows 7, 8+ etc.
Then it had a small USB issue, I thought I should try to upgrade BIOS, see if this can help, then soon I started to regret, because I had found that all legacy boot is failed, the Windows 8.1 throw me into a BSOD, tell me PAGE FAULT error. I have tried USB, internal HD & DVD, all same.
Then I googled, saw someone had similar problem (not same), he cleared CMOS by pull out the battery, so I tried it without any hope, but surprisingly, when I pull out the battery and remove the connection of power adapter and laptop battery, by pressing the power button several time with & without power cord connected, then I installed the CMOS battery, laptop battery, restart the laptop.
When I press F12 to load the boot menu, it really can load legacy bootable device, but that's one time thing. After the system reboot, the problem back again, looks like if I want to boot into legacy bootable device, I will have to remove CMOS battery each time like above all...sad.

This morning, I'm working on downloading available BIOS updates related to Meltdown/Spectre, and creating bootable USB keys with the updates for each model computer that we use.  I've downloaded the update for the 20BS from here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... According to the readme file, this update should include a tool for making a bootable USB key to install the update, but the tool and the "Instruction US - BIOS flash USB memory key.txt" file referenced in the readme both seem to be missing from the download.   Please advise how to create a bootable USB for installing this bios update.

I have tried everything !! everything!. I've been trying for days and i hate asking for help, but i just cant get it to work!

I have an msi wind, and it runs Xp, but i tried dual booting osx and everything goes fine. Though now i cannot access Win Xp cause it says im missing the hal.dll.

So there is something wrong with the boot.ini file.

What can i do?

Things i have tried
1) Modify the boot.ini from osx but the file is protected!
2) Use the recovery disk but i dont have a cd drive! and getting a usb is not an option.
3) Safe mod or command promt mode did not work
4) Tried installing Ubuntu onto an external hard disk so i can modify the partitions, and i got ubuntu on my ext hdd now but when i in bios tell the pc to boot from usb it just have that flashing cursor and nothing happens!.

Seriously, for two days i have googled everything and been to msi wind forums, but i cant find a solution.. Im not that kind of guy who does not try before he asks!

How can i make that Ext Hdd bootable?? Or can i some how get Recovery console to run from Usb flash drive??

I need my msi wind for school, so i really could use some help. Thanks in advance, if you need more info please tell.

Answer:[SOLVED] Cannot access Win Xp (dual boot failed) hal.dll missing, cannot boot from Ex

I don't think there is anything you can do unless you boot from an optical disc. That means getting an external optical drive. But google for how to make an ASUS EEE PC boot from a USB flash drive and see if that procedure will work for you with the Msi Wind also.

As the title says, top right USB port on my T470 doesn't work after BIOS v1.42 update when device is plugged in on boot.  Non of devices power up when plugged into that port. Naturally there's nothing in dmesg. This is not OS-dependent since devices don't power up in BIOS screen as well. The other 2 ports still work as expected. Restarting doesn't help. After some cold boots the ports starts working again. This never happened with previous BIOS versions.

I'm experiencing a very complicated issue. I tried to update my bios to the new version (40), after that laptop is not able to boot from HDD or DVD or even USB.it's trying to boot from network and get failed. Unfortunately, there is bios password that I dont remember and as a result I cannot get into bios setup to change the boot priority. Does anybody have an idea what can I do? Thanks,

Answer:Lenovo z510 bios password + unable to boot

Hi Amin1195,

Welcome to the Forums.

As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with BIOS password in your Z510 laptop.

As you have mentioned that you were updating the BIOS, did the system shutdown, try to remove the CMOS battery and reseat the battery this can remove the BIOS password if the system is under warranty then do not open the system as the warranty will be void.  Check if the system booting to BIOS if yes change the boot priority to boot from other devices and check. Other devices can be using external HDD or pendrive.

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

The initial BIOS screen appears, then eventually powers off. F2 to enter setup or F12 to select boot device also don't work. I did a couple of impatient hard power offs and now behaviour is as described - effectively bricked. Grateful for any and all suggestions! I tried booting off a live CD, but unsurprisingly, that didn't work either. When I select F2 or F12, a message appears saying entering Setup or device selection, but nothing happens, then power off after a few more seconds.

Soo... things have gone from bad to worse.

My problem started after windows 10 updated when I shut down my laptop for a quick restart. Windows explorer would crash every second, reopen, then crash again without stopping. I tried a system restore to a restore point about a week ago, no dice. I decided to try resetting the computer using Windows built in tools. Everything was going well until it tried to boot after, and now i'm stuck with a BSOD that reads "inaccessible boot device". On top of that, trying to boot into BIOS or to a DVD or to USB are ALL failing. Attempting to access the BIOS (holding F1 as system boots) results in the "Lenovo" logo just hanging until I let go of the button, at which point it tries to boot into windows and fails. USB stick with Windows 10 installer on it isn't working, and the DVD drive boots up and whirrs for a second when the laptop turns on, buit then stops and the computer goes back to trying to boot from windows. (No "Press any key prompt, etc. The little Windows spinning circle of balls comes back on and tries to boot to windows)

Pressing F12 gets me the boot menu, but I have only 3 options :
"Windows Boot Manager", which goes into loading windows and BSOD.
EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (says no media)
EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (again, says no media)

There is a disc in the drive, a USB drive in the port. What in the world is going on?

After getting int othe BIOS and tampering with everything I could, the computer seems to have finally recognized its own drives again. It still wont boot from USB (although now it at least acknowledges a USB drive is there) I got it to boot from the recorvery CD created by windows media creator. However, the software is unable to restore the PC, reset the PC, or fix the boot issues. It says a partition is missing. Has my hard drive completely failed? At this point, that's the only problem I can think of.

I have an XPS 8500 that will not boot normally. It was running fine and all of a sudden came up with the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key". I have figured out if I go into BIOS first the PC will boot up but is very slow in doing so. I googled the issue and found something telling me to default the BIOS. I did this and it booted once. Trying to decide if the HD is out. I ran diagnostics and it does not see a HD. But if that's the case why does it even boot after going into BIOS. I am running Windows 10 Pro. I updated Windows 7 Pro. I am a strong believer in Dell and find it hard to believe that a HD would go out after only 4 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There!
I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!
I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least. So my boot sequence is as follows:
Boot 1: (Hard drive)
Boot 2: CD/DVD: PM-ATAPI DV
Boot 3: USB: Generic-Compa
Boot 4: Lan

I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu. But I truly have no idea how to change that. Which brings me here.
If anyone can offer any help to this, I would greatly appreciate it.

HiYou will have to give a little more information. What is the make and model of the computer? If it isn't a brand name what make and model of the motherboard.Or you can post a Speccy that will give that information.[ Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button.

Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.

You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot

You will see the following prompt:
Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Congrats! You have just posted your specs!... Read more
