Ultrabay Hard Drive caddy Y500

Question: Ultrabay Hard Drive caddy Y500

Well, I noticed the price, 189.99...I talked to a sales rep on chat and said I could not buy just the hard drive caddy. Lenovo, I am very dissapointed in you. How dare you sell the caddy and the HD at that price. You claim we could buy the accessories, yet we can not purchase a caddy seperately. Way to go...I hope there are plans to change this, extremely dissapointed. Mis-leading your customers like this, we should have had more information. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Ultrabay Hard Drive caddy Y500

hi iamtheecho,

Sorry to hear that you were not able to buy that product directly from Lenovo. My guess is that the HDD and the HDD caddy are bundled and are not sold separately.

But since you have a 9.5mm tray-in Ultrabay ODD, you can buy this HDD caddy as an alternative:

LotFancy New 2.5" /9.5mm (SATA) 2ND HDD HARD DISK DRIVE Caddy/Adapter

Hope this helps.

Hello, I recently bought a 256gb SSD and a caddy for the ultrabay slot.  I was wondering should I place the Hybrid drive and place the SSD into the spot it once took? I plan on moving windows to the SSD and frequently used programs/games. I just want to make sure which method is safer. I'm wondering because I might reset my computer since it refuses to download needed updates or it says it has the update but, windows won't reconize it, to upgrade to windows 8.1 then windows 10.

I received the caddy from newmodeus and I popped in the hdd, which came with W520 primary bay, into the ultrabay.everything is running fine, but the speed in HWINFO64 is shown as 1.5Gb/s. however the HDD itself support SATA II, which is supposed to be 3.0Gb/s. anything wrong with my setup or caddy? I emailed the newmodeus and the replied me that "Our caddy has a pass-through SATA connection. It will support the maximum speed your optical drive controller will support". any thought on this? Thanks

Answer:Hard drive in Ultrabay Caddy shows 1.5Gb/s

Tolgcc: The hard drive caddies are nothing more than a fancy version of a cable that connects the drive to the computer. If the drive is not operating at fast speeds, probably best to go troubleshooting somewhere else, although I don't really know where to suggest. I have an Intel application on my computer called "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" - that displays the SATA transfer speed of the disc - you might want to have a look at that application, and also check to make sure you have the latest version of that application and the driver associated with it. The easiest way to get it is to use the Lenovo System Update tool. Michael

Hi!  I have been looking for a second hard disk caddy suitable for the R50E and have found an advert for one which says it is compatible with the R50E and i have also seen info to the contrary that says it can't be done.  has anyone tried this with an R50E and got it to work ? i am not fussed if i cannot do a hot swap. Regards, Andy.

Answer:Can i run a second hard disk in an R50E using an ultrabay caddy ?

you would need the ultrabay enhanced caddy not the ultrabay slim caddy which is for the T series... but other than that i don't see why it shouldn't work....

I bought a new HD and installed it into my IBM ThinkPad A30. More room: yay! Then I bought an Ultrabay caddy and put my old drive into it and installed it into the laptop. Now my old drive shows up as my D: drive. And now I want to format the old drive. But Windows (XP Pro) tells me, "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive and make sure that no other window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting the drive again." Hmm. So then I tried this: 1. Go to [Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management].2. Right-Click the disk and select Format. ...and Windows said, "The volume goblinbox (D Primary partition is currently in use. To force the format, click Yes."Can I force the format and still have the D: drive work as a secondary drive, or will the thing disappear? Comments appreciated. Cheers,Mush

Answer:Ultrabay HD Caddy - formatting D: drive OK?

Yes you can force the Format and Yes the drive will still work as the secondary. Just make absolutely certain that you've selected the correct drive and not the primary drive's secondary partition. A possible reason you're having difficulties is that your index service is probably accessing the drive.

I'm thinking about replacing the factory CD/DVD drive that came with my W530 and lives in the stock 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy, with a 12.7mm slim BluRay burner (say something like this Panasonic UJ-265).  Since the thickness matches, I believe this is possible.

So, can the factory Ultrabay caddy be removed and completely replaced with a fixed SATA BD drive like this?

If so, is there a SATA cable problem?  In other words, do I need a SATA-to-SlimlineSATA adapter, both for data and power, such as this item (which is shown on the same Amazon page as the UJ-265)?

Has anybody done this?  Do you have any suggestions and/or recommendations I haven't thought of?

thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

Answer:W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

The connector looks right.  If I were GUESSING, I would say that it will probably work, but it won't fit into the mechanism that locks the drive in place.

Does Lenovo not sell Blu Ray Ultrabay drives for the Ideapad Y500? I've only found two links to potential products: http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-lenovo-ideapad-y500-sata-bd-rre-blu-ray-drive-75538 http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-lenovo-ideapad-y500-sata-bd-rom-blu-ray-combo-drive-75397 I'm particularly wary of these options because of the discrepancies between the two drives. Why different prices? And why does the price on google not match the price on the website. Does anyone even have the part number for the Blu Ray drive?

Answer:Where to get Blu Ray Ultrabay Drive for Y500?

Thanks for posting these links, I've been looking everywhere to buy the blu ray ultra bay for my Y500. The difference between the two links is that one read/writes blu ray and the other just reads blu ray. I would just get the one that reads blu ray unless you plan to burn blu ray dvds.

I've recently bought the Y500 with the dual graphics cards, and I need to obtain a CD/DVD drive. I saw on this post -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Y500-Ultrabay/td-p/1155205 that both parts may be interchangeable. Currently, the Y500 part is not available on the Lenovo store (that I can find), but the Y400's is. Does anyone know from first-hand experience if  them being interchangeable is correct? I'd rather buy from Lenovo then find the Y500 model elsewhere.

Hi there, New to the forum, hello! I recently bought a Y500 laptop from Lenovo Canada. I was satisfied with the performance but wanted a boost. I started looking for the removable ultrabay graphics card (GN36) on the Canadian website. I couldn't find it but over the next week or so, all vendors seemed to be missing this graphics card. I called into Lenovo support and was told that they couldn't find the product on the system as well. They said they'd call me if there were any updates...but for now it seems like the product is discontinued. Anyone have any luck getting a hold of one of these? I'd love to run them both together in SLI but if Lenovo has decided to discontinue this...the ultrabay option has lost a lot of interest for me.

What is the best SSD to use in the Ultrabay caddy in a Thinkpad T420?

Hi,I have removed the DVD from the Ultra Bay & installed a 2nd Hard Drive for extra storage etc.Every so often, & more often than not, it ejects itself. The only method to get it back is to close lid into standby mode & open again.Sometimes it happens on resume from standby as well..? Any ideas on what can be causing this? I had a W510 before & it did similar things. I have also spokne to someone else who had the same type of issues.I think on the W510 (win7), it used to ask to be ejected, whereas on this W530 (win8) it ejects it on its own... Maybe there is a setting to say never eject...?

Answer:W530 UltraBay Caddy

It is an old issue I don't believe the root cause has ever been identified.  Search for "thinkpad ultrabay eject error" on google and you'll see what I mean. I don't recall ever seeing a definitive solution.

Hello, Sorry for all the pestering, but I was hoping that the good people on this forum could help me out with yet another thing. I am looking into buying an ultrabay caddy to stick my hdd for an old notebook into my new T500 (SSD). What is the difference between the first HDD adapter listed on the Lenovo site and the ultrabay III option? And is there any way someone can confirm that this would be a genuine purchase? http://cgi.ebay.com/2nd-hard-HDD-Caddy-Adapter-For-Thinkpad-T400-T500-W500_W0QQitemZ360198319171QQcm...

Answer:T500 Ultrabay Caddy

The e-bay one doesn't look right. Pull out your DVD drive - there is a piece of plastic that sticks out at the end of the drive that slipps into the machine. My ulatrabay slim adapter III also has that.  The version II was designed for T400/T500, version III has a slightly different bezel shape to match the T400s exactly. It looks/works fine in my T400 - just angled a bit rather than flat.  Not sure what the first one on the lenovo site is.

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

I bought myself a SATA hard drive caddy off ebay (yes, a knockoff one) and put it into the ultrabay with an SSD in it (the plan was to clone my current drive to the SSD and then put the SSD in the proper drive slot afterwards). The caddy went in fine, but now it just will not come out. I push the unlock switch over and try to push the second switch up but it's completely jammed in there.. So my first plan was to take the keyboard off and just take a look, to see if there was anything obviously wrong. That plan was stopped when one of the screws holding the keyboard in place was in far too tight, and they are really small screws. I didn't want to attempt any further for fear of rounding off the screw head. So at this point I'm probably going to have to send it back off to Lenovo and have them dismantle the laptop to get this thing out. Before I do that, does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what could be done?

Answer:HDD caddy jammed in Ultrabay. T510.

Did the Ultrabay Adapter (It's not a caddy!) have the black ejection stub next to the SATA connectors?  If not, it is an Ultrabay II, not III.   The 500-520 series needs that stub in order for the eject mechanism to push the adapter out.  Also, if it is a 9.5mm adapter, the SSD may be sticking up and blocking the ejection.  Do you have a link to show what you got as an adapter?  If the SSD is not fasteneed down, when the laptop is turned upside down to work the eject buttons, it can block the eject movement. If you can work those buttons with it right side up, it might come loose.

I want to install a new, faster HDD in place of the one with my T61 (7659D22) came and mount the original system HDD in an UltraBay caddy. The no-name caddy I have looks a little different from the picture in the manual for the genuine 40Y8746: it has little plastic protrusions under which the drive screws might fit once the drive has been slid forward far enough for the connectors to mate. Unfortunately, the only way I can get the connectors to mate is if I insert the HDD at an angle (as shown in the 40Y9746 instructions), but then the plastic protrusions foul the screw heads and I cannot press the drive flat down into the caddy. Which would be better? Trim those plastic protrusions? Or not use the screws that hold the cover in place over the drive's electronics? -- and maybe dispense with that cover altogether? Or is there something I'm totally overlooking?

Hey, I have the Lenovo Y510P with dual GPU and an SSD. I was wondering if i can take out the second GPU (the one in the UltraBay) and replace it with an SSD caddy to make an upgrade to the storage. Because my second GPU doesn't worth the while, the computer hits up a lot with the SLI enabled and crashes all the time while playing games. Thanks in advance,Tal.

Answer:Y510P Dual GPU, can i change the UltraBay to SSD caddy?

hi Tal,

Adding an SSD via an HDD caddy on the Y510p is definitely possible as another user have tried this already in this thread (note that if the drive doesn't get detected, you may need to toggle the switch pin in the caddy).

Alternatively, if Y510p came with a 1TB+24GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD, then you can replace the M.2 SSD into a bigger capacity (like this item).

Let me know if this works for you.

Hi, I bought a SSD drive for the internal bay and would like to use the factory drive with the ultrabay caddy. There are several products which offers either SATA II or SATA III. Few are SATA III and its the interface only you'll won't see the speeds of 6GB other than possibly the odd burst of data peaking a bit higher. Its drive specific. However, you still should get a SATA III caddy for it. I did for mine and the price is the same anyway. Note your height though is 430 compatible!!! Assume nothing be certain it is compatible.

Hi, guys,

I just received and installed this Ultrabay caddy:

cheap and good UB caddy

It holds the disk very securely, and it fits flush, no gaps, matches the color of the Thinkpad, and has a nice little blue LED activity light. All of this for $12 shipped. I didn't bother to bid, just clicked "buy it now". They shipped it immediately.

Answer:Ultrabay Disk Caddy - excellent and cheap

I bought the official Lenovo Ultrabay IV caddy for my T440p but apparently I need a spacer to ensure the HDD does not move around in it. Currently there's a 3mm gap on all sides of the HDD. Can someone point me in the right direction? The HDD is a Travelstar 7K1000, so it's exactly the right size for the caddy (2.5", 9.5mm). I tried the plastic surround from the main drive bay, but even that allows a slight bit of movement, which is obviously a no-no for a mechanical drive. I'm at a loss what I'm supposed to use, short of literally jamming some strips of plastic in the gaps.

Answer:T440p Ultrabay caddy HDD rails/spacer

Great hdd you've got.  Just use some dual sided tape and your problem is solved.  Snag a small roll for a buck at the dollar store.  More importantly, why did you spend $70 on the "official" Lenovo caddy when they are $9 on ebay?

Question: Y500 CPU Ultrabay?

Hi, I recently got the y500 with the new GTX750 card, and I'm kinda wishing that I got the one with dual graphics instead. Is there a way I can purchase the second ultrabay GPU sepretately? I know that you could purchase the second GPU with the older model y500, just not sure if that option is available yet for the newer one.

So I purchased the Y500 about a month and a half ago, I got 8GB RAM model that didn't have the SLI graphics. I breifly researched how to grab a second graphics card to put into the ultrabay slot, but can't find anything on the topic.  I don't know if this is possible, and if it is what cards am I limited to?

HelloWhere can I see available devices for Y500? (I heared about optical drive and others)

Answer:Y500 Ultrabay

This is the only one I'm seeing anymore for the Y500.  i believe they are about to come out with the next model and we are starting to see their poor accessory sales and marketing come out, even as discontinuing parts like this before the model is discontinued.  For them not to be even able to be purchased with the laptop as you configure on the web is sign that they are only looking at selling the model, not the accesories.  But I digress... Removeable hard drive:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...  The Y400 parts should be the same as the Y500 parts for the ultrabay, but I have not tried them.Graphics:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... Optical:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... There is also a fan that is suppose to be available for both models but neither are showing anywhere on the web. When I called a couple weeks ago and asked for some of them I was told some of them were discontinued but others would be coming back online soon.  So your guess is as good as mine.

Question: Ultrabay Y500

Why no accessories for ultrabay?  No, but seriously, the computer is advertised to use them, they should have been released with the product line. Not to mention the horrible US Site support for the drivers. Everything can be found on the chinese website. If Lenovo admins are reading this, please update the site and add in windows 7 drivers and not just windows 8 drivers. Also, there should have been a boot disc option included. Can't even recover the hard drive that was sent out with the laptop at the moment. Then they want me to send it back in for repairs that will take weeks, when all I need is the OS disc. Terrible launch support, very dissapointed. If the partition on the hard drive gets corrupted, what should a person do??? It's just not acceptable to have to wait weeks to get it fixed.

Answer:Ultrabay Y500

Hmmm... How did you manage to get the drivers? I am planning on buying the Y500 but only if I can find Win7 64 drivers. I tried to figure out the chines website (with chinese language) and it seems there are Win7 drivers but I couldn“t download them. Can anyone make them otherwise accesible?Thank you!

Hi, my 10yr old pc (xp with sp3) became so frustrating slow that i decided to replace it in July with a Windows7 system that has a 120Gb SSD +1Tb hdd and 16gb memory. There is stuff on the old pc's hard drive that i'd like to use so, is it possible to remove it and put it in a caddy and connect it to my new pc using a usb cable? If yes, is it straightforward or am i dreaming?? Thanks for any info. - Tony

Answer:Using old hard drive in a caddy

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Lenovo Y500 from CeX (a UK based second hand gaming store) and I'm wanting to swap out the 1tb HDD for a SSD. This seems pretty straight foward enough however, in order to keep the nice amount of disk space I wanted to put the original 1tb HDD out of my laptop into the ultrabay. This is where I seem to have hit a brick wall. After a bit of research I found that I needed a Hard Drive Caddy Adapter and finding the right one for the Y500 seems to be quite complicated. I have found these that appear to come close to what I need:http://www.ecrater.co.uk/help.php?faq_gid=2http://www.partoflaptop.com/product_info.php?language=en¤cy=GBP&products_id=2019http://www.justop.com/catalog/2nd-hard-disk-drive-caddy-ide-to-sata-12-7mm-0-5-inch-for-laptops.html I was wondering which one fits (or do they all fit)? The front plastic bit on any of them doesn't appear to be the same as the one on my ultrabay optical drive that came as standard with the laptop, so I'm a bit skeptical. I have come across other forum posts disscussing the issue but all the links provided are from US based companies that won't ship to the UK. These forums also mention that the front plastic part doesn't exactly fit the Y500 casing so is bound to look a bit out of place. Also any suggestions on what SSD to go for would be very welcome

Answer:Finding a HDD Caddy for the Y500

Your hdd probably is 9.5mm thick so you select a ssd that is 9.5mm or less. As to the caddy yes you will have a hard time removing the original front plate to be installed to the caddy. You might break the plate.

Okay, so I bought a new 96gb ssd for my boot drive, and it works great an all, but its a bit slow, so I thought that I would just buy one of those cd-bay replacement caddies and put a hard drive in there. It is detected, it does fit, and there is a led indicator that shows that its powered, but after maybe 5 minutes of continuous use (i.e. formatting, transferring files), it shuts off; disappears from the face of my computer saying anything transferred might not have saved correctly and I may have lost some data. However, I do notice two things, one is that it still spins (so there must be power, right?) and secondly the HDD works completely fine via USB.  There are then two solutions that I have found that get it back to being able to be detected (none of which last more than 5 minutes of use, so that doesn't solve the problem). One is to restart with the HDD out and plug it in when the computer is booted up. The other is to take it out, plug it into a SATA to USB adapter and access it, and put it back in the caddy and it will detect.  I'm pretty sure of the following: it is not because of power issues, as I can run it via usb it is not the hard drive; it works fine in the main hdd tray it is not because my ultrabay is broken; my CD-RW works fineHere are my specs:Lenovo T61P Core2 Duo @ 2.4Windows XP 32-bit 3gb ramKingston V+100 SSD @ 96gbFujitsu 160gb 5400 HDD(came with laptop)eBay knockoff hdd caddy  In short, how do I test out if its my caddy... I plan to get one Fan Ultrabay but I heard someone said it wouldn't make any difference on reducing the laptop heat....  Did anyone here actually try the Fan Ultrabay for y400/y500 laptop and give me some advice "should I buy it for my laptop?" does it help cooling my laptop? especially for gaming and video rendering.... Recently, the CPU just gets up to 70-78*C when I play games and video rendering... (That is with Cooling pad) I just don't want to waste $30....

Answer:Fan Ultrabay for Y400 / Y500...

I personally bought one, it is absolutely worthless, my y400 actually runs cooler with the drive bay empty, the fan is low speed only, and it was only blowing out cold air for me, it seemed like it was stealing the cold air that the other fan would use to cool the cpu side of the laptop. I think I am just going to gut the fan portion out of it and just leave it in their empty just kind of like an intake vent, it will save a bit of weight over the optical drive, or my other thought was maybe trying to flip the fan inside the housing, so it sucks air in instead of blowing it out. I haven't done either yet because I've just been frustrated with wasting the money

I have just received my new Y500, but I would like to get an Ultrabay for a second HDD, actually moving the original disk to the Ultrabay and replacing the original with a SSD. I cannot find what might fit the new Y500 model. Any help would be great.

Answer:Y500 Ultrabay Options HDD

I just ordered the doorbuster deal Y500, the advertising on this model as well as the gallery shows the ultrabay in place.  Ha!  I'll wait until it arrives to see but when asking the "chat" person I got an unintelligible response, something like "after you place order" - what??? Anyway I certainly expect it to come with the ultrabay as depicted.  If so it should be a simple thing to put the TB HDD where the DVD is and install a 256GB SSD in it's place to lay down Linux (or whatever you use).  That should make it a pretty decent laptop for all but intense users especially with the 1920x1080 screen. It is a bit disconcerting that no mention is made of ultrabay options to order direct - poor marketing and poor release tactics, hope the machine is better.  Overall the tech specs are weakly given, like, is it really SATA II or SATA III etc.  Probably not even SATA III, can't get that answer either.  Come on Lenovo, buyers want to know what it is they are buying!  This will be my third Lenovo, first was X61 tablet (still works with LInux), ideaPad U160 (great with Mint) and now this Y500.  Good stuff but.....

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

They're probably 3.5" (measure the width which will actually measure about 4" if they're 3.5" drives) and most likely to be IDE, but check this. Which connection do they have on the back?

Hi Guys,    So Recently I purchased a ThinkPad T420 with 16 gb RAM and 240 gb SSD. I am Planning to swap the hard drive with a anopther HDD opr a ssd. I was wondering if someone can help me with suggestions. I know i ahve to buy a 12.7mm bay for hdd. But does the hard drive bay has to have a eject button ? with a SATA III hard drive bay work? I was looking at this one : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Notebook-12-7mm-SATA-CD-ROM-Optical-Drive-Bay-for-2nd-HDD-Hard-Drive-Cadd...Will this work? Also should I get a normal rotational HDD for the 2nd Hard drive or a ssd ? Cheers

I have an Ideacentre Y700 Desktop and went to install an additional 3.5 inch hard drive but there was no caddy in the empty slot. I called Lenovo and was told they don't sell them. I've looked at a number of sites on the internet (Fry's, Amazon, Google Search) with no luck. Even called a few local computer stores, again with no luck. Any ideas as to where to go to get one would be greatly appreciated!

I love this computer, but I would like to use the hard drive caddy and there are no instructions.  I can't find any at the support site either.   Is there a manual somewhere?

Answer:I bought I used t61 with a hard drive caddy.

Hi

You can download the manual from here: click me!

Check chapter 1020, page #62 (from the manual, not the page number from your pdf viewer). You'll see the instructions to remove/insert the ultrabay device.

You can also check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbVhzmLVtdQ  I'm not sure if it's a T61 for the principle is the same.

Hope this helps!

Hello, I purchased an ATA hard drive caddy for mt IBM t40 and I have been unable to have the hard drive recognice by windows XP. The unit turns on and lights come on on the caddy, but I can not see the drive when I go to my computer. I have tried several hard drives and also have changed the jumpers on the hard drive. Hope some one can help. The hard drives I am ussing come out of my old T43 and T41 that failed and they are Fujitsu hard drives 40 and 60 gigs. Thank you

Answer:Hard Drive Caddy ATA not able to install on my T40

Jumpers must be set to master when using IDE drives in a caddy.
Is the T40 detecting the caddy when plugged into the USB port?
Cab you see the drive in disk management?

Recently my old Acer Aspire 1650 decided to die, and I now want to try and recover my data from the hard drive. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 4200.2 ST9100822A - hard drive - 100 GB - ATA-100http://shopper.cnet.com/internal-hard-drives/seagate-momentus-4200-2/4014-9998_9-31153841.html#info-5I decided that the best bet would be to get a cheap caddy/enclosure for it and pull the files off via USB on any new laptop I buy. However, I am confused as to what type of caddy I need to buy as most seem to say SATA or IDE interface but nothing about ATA - 100.Furthermore, if anyone can recommend a caddy that would work my hard drive was partitioned and I wondered if this would have any effect upon my ability to access the files. Thanks in advance.

I installed a generic ultra bay caddy and the new drive isn't recognized. It works fine in an external enclosure.Any suggestions?

Answer:T43 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy not working

Sounds like you should probably get a genuine part, or perhaps you got a defective generic, of the drive isn't fully engaged in the plug. Can you tell if the bios regognizes the drive as being there?  Also, is this an IDE or SATA adapter?

I have a hard drive 'enclosure' (caddy) into which I have permanently fitted one of my old Hard drives.
Instead of buying another can I use a docking station in the link below.
I want to use another 2 or 3 hard drives for back up and that would save me the cost of a number of caddies?

It does seem obvious but looks too good!?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/iDsonix-Sup...1600&sr=1-25-spons&keywords=hard+drives&psc=1

The caddy I currently use:-

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

I have a hard drive taken from a PC that died on me (motherboard failure)
I put it in a caddy and connected to my new Pc and tried to format it. When trying to format it the Drive letter came up as "C" which it was on the old PC, my new Pc has the same drive letter and I was afraid I would damage my new Pc so I cancelled the formatting.
I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

Hello,I aquired a "used" Sleekbook 14-b010us, and it was missing a lot of parts. Iv'e gotten it running again, but I am missing a hard drive caddy. I found a few on ebay and other part stores, but for other model numbers. Does anyone have a part number for a drive caddy for the 14-b010us so I can make sure the parts are compatible? Or, are they fairly universal for the Sleekbook 14-b series? Here's a few in question:http://www.notebookparts.com/hp-pavilion-14-14-b031us-hdd-hard-drive-caddy-fbu33013010/ http://www.ebay.com/itm/697905-001-DD0U33HD010-GENUINE-HP-HARD-DRIVE-CADDY-ENCLOSURE-14-SLEEKBOOK-14... On ebay they are like $5, so I may just buy it and hope for the best. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi, I've just dumped a dead laptop but have kept the hard drive intending to use it as a spare external drive. However, i am having problems finding a caddy/enclosure to put it in. The laptop was a Packard Bell Easynote F7300. can anyone point me to a website where I might find a caddy to put the hard drive in. Thanks

Answer:Caddy for laptop hard drive

There are thousands og them around, emmandelo, but you haven't said if your hard drive is IDE or SATA. Yon can get enclosures that will take both types though. click here You could also search EBay.

I find hard drive terminology a bit confusing. All these SATA and PATA acronyms...!I have an external HDD in a USB caddy, for backing up. However, it's a bit small, and I want to fit a new, larger capacity one.The data connection to the HDD within the caddy is the good old grey multi-strand ribbon cable that's been used within PC's for yonks. Am I right in thinking that, so long as the drive I buy is specified as "IDE", then that's the type of data connection it will have? While I'm at it, does anyone have recommendations for a good deal on a drive - about 200GB?Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Which type of hard drive for my caddy?

Yes IDE or ATA ebuyer is my choice

Hi all,I have in the past had a pretty severe PC fiddling habit!I have therefore piles of kit that are last generation at the best, all serviceable but not in best nick or any semblance of order.I am minded just to have a great big sell up, stick it all in once box and sell it all for about a 100th of what it all cost in it's day.I have relocated, have no space and no time for toys so it makes some sense. However I will hold on to Hard drives from the ages as I do not want and old data floating around in strangers hands. So, to the question, any recommendations for a desk top caddy I can drop an old ide drive into and salvage anything I want before taking a sledge hammer to the drive?Looking for quality and reliability, have had Chinese versions that haven't lasted the course and will expect a USB interface at the PC end! Thanks for help in advance, Brgds, Epirb.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

Answer:T520 : hard drive caddy

I also purchased the drive caddy for my T520 and had the same questions and comments you had. I think Lenovo expects that you purchase the HD from them with the caddy on it.

I am trying to use this PC to read a previous hard drive from another HP pavilion (purchased in September 2016 but now written off by my insurers as the screen got damaged and could not be replaced) vis a USB caddy. Using the current USB caddy I get a message that it needs to be USB 3.0 compatible and the drive will not read. I have checked with my local tech support and the drive is readable on their system. How can I resolve this as I need to access it, to retrieve a one off program which was not fully backed up before the laptop got damaged

Answer:Reading Old Hard drive via USB Caddy

So I gather it is a usb 2.0 caddy/adapter? Have you tried plugging it into a USB 2.0 port on another computer?

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.

I've recently began having problems with a SATA - USB caddy to my Laptop. The caddy in question is one of these:

Sometimes I get "Delayed Write Errors" (in XP), other times the blue light will just go off and any activity will be stopped without any warning - when I take the USB cable out, the light comes back on and the caddy works again.
