Lenovo y500 touchpad cleaning

Question: Lenovo y500 touchpad cleaning

Hi. I was wondering if you recommend cleaning under touchpad. After a year some dirt accumulated under my touchpad. Sometimes when I have wet hands drops of water slip under touchpad as well. Is it essential to clean under my touchpad and can it affect other pieces of hardware like graphic card or CPU if I don't clean it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 TouchPad

hi cnwh,
  Welcome to Lenovo Forums

I'm not sure what touchpad you have there but Y500 have i guess two types of touchpad, thats ELAN and Synaptics
well you can check it by following these steps

> Open Control Panel
> Choose Hardware and Sound/ Mouse
> Choose Mouse

It should pull up a windows that has tabs on it. Last tab to the right will say if it is an ELAN or SYNAPTICS tab like this
 Spoiler (Highlight to read)
No you know what touchpad you have you can check these links for tutorials,

For Synaptics Check out this link
For ELAN it is very much like this video

Hope this helps,
Cheers!!

I'm extremeley impressed by the spec on the higher end Y500 and planning on buying. Only thing holding me back is this "touchpad issue". Has this been resolved yet? (Either via software update or new laptops being shipped with different touchpads etc) Obviously I'm not going to buy a £1000 laptop with a serious known fault. Thanks, Ryan.

AFAIK, the elan touchpad caused this problem which has been replaced by a synaptics touchpad which does not cause the problem. Also, i have heard that the lot in the stores is still having the elan touchpad, so you may order from lenovo site.

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

The Lenovo Y500 issue that the lenovo tech. is referring to is probably this thread.

Usually, every vendor has specific period (may vary from 7 days up to a month) where you can exchange/return a product if found defective. If you're still in between this specific period and you purchased the unit directly from Lenovo, you may try to call lenovo sales at these specific hours to raise your concern

Hello: Since I upgraded to Windows 10 on my IdeaPad Y500 my wifi is intermittant and stops working on sleep.

The network icon in the lower right corner  of the desktop has a red x next to it indicating no network connection. My home wifi network is not listed in the Network Settings list even when the laptop's wifi card is connecting to the router.  The wifi loses connection intermittantly on sleep, it works again once I restart the machine but loses the connection when it goes back to sleep. The LAN connection has also stopped working intermmitantly as well as the sound card.

I have updated to the latest version of Windows 10 (including the kb3093266 update) pushed out in the last month by Microsoft.
I have checked and rechecked the device drivers for wifi and LAN network adapters. The drivers are up to date with the latest. The wifi adapter is an Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230.
There are no network connections listed in the "Network Settings" list including my own router and the many other routers in my apartment building. The LAN connection didn't show up either.
The LAN adapter also stopped working the last I checked.
The sound card stopped working as well but comes back intermittantly.

What should I do? This problem is really annoying. The wifi connection is lost constantly and only works on restart. This happened after the Windows 10 upgrade in July. It only worked fine with Windows 8 and the Windows 10 Inside... Read more

I am getting some kind of weird touchpad problem. Basically it says (according to the elan app anyways) that I have a finger on the touchpad when I don't.   "This image is saying that my finger on the the touchpad, but it isn't." However I believe this is a software problem, not a hardware, because when I did a clan install, it worked like it should have for awhile. Then after deleting some bloatware and restarting, this problem came up again. Help?

Last night I accidently placed my knee on the touchpad. Now it feels like the left and right click buttons were pushed in and there is no click sound just a smooth soft sound. The left button is hard to "unclick" it will highlight and drag everything. What can I do here? Should I disassemble the laptop and try fixing the issue? My warranty finished this month.

**bleep**, sorry to hear that, I would open it and see what is the problem only if I was sure of what I was doing or have experience. see if you can push it back in place or perhaps when you open it, you will be able to see if it is damaged or not. I would get a Trackball mouse if you have no other options.

Answer:[Y500] Touchpad and Wi-Fi problems

hi MBaNL,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Regarding your questions:

1. As you may already found out, there's potential hardware issue on the Y500's touchpad as discussed in this thread.
2. Upon checking the wifi card on the Y500, it comes with a Intel Wireless-N 2230 which is a single band wifi card that can only detect 2.4Ghz wifi networks. If your router is a dual band, try to configure it to broadcast both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, Otherwise, you will need to bring it down to 2.4Ghz.

Hope this helps.

I just bought the Ideapad Y500, and while I have other issues with the trackpad at the moment (flickering, inaccurate), the one thing I noticed that bothers me the most is that the trackpad is twice as sensitive when moving horizontally as vertically.  The resolution I have it set at is 1920x1080.  I'd hate to think that I would have to drop the resolution just to make this problem go away, but Googling it tells me that there's no real fix outside of Linux.  Is there any way to even out the difference in the two axes' sensitivity?

I just bought a brand new laptop Lenovo Y500 and I was very happy. But now, I encounter a problem of keyboard double-tap sometime when I am typing. For example, when I type "I love you.", it outputs "I llove you." (double-tap 'l' letter). This happens regularly and it kidda get annoying. I try to adjust the repeat rate of keyboard in Control Panel but the problem remains. Another problem is the mouse pad, I use my finger to move the mouse in the screen, when my finger is near the edge and actually stops. The mouse in the screen doesn't. it continues moving in the direction. What should I do? Thanks.

Hi I bought my Y500 a few days ago and happy with it in general. However, one day the two-finger-tap (for right click) on the touchpad stopped working. Below is a description. Everything else as far as I can tell, including two-finger scroll and one-finger tap and so forth, are working fine, but the two-finger tap stopped working even though it worked fine for a few days. I have a suspicious as to what caused it but I'm not entirely sure. In any case I think it's most likely a bug, and probably software. One day I went into "control panel" -> "mouse" -> "device settings" -> "settings..." -> "Scrolling" -> "two-finger scrolling" -> "enable coasting". I played with coasting for a while, and soon disabled it again because I didn't really like it. However, it was then that I noticed that my two-finger tap stopped working. I have doubled-checked that "control panel" -> "mouse" -> "device settings" -> "settings..." -> "clicking" -> "two-finger click" is set to "secondary click (context menu, special drag)", but the two-finger click still doesn't work, even after a restarted. I downloaded the latest driver (version 16.2.18.0) and it still didn't work. I uninstalled the driver and installed it again and it still doesn't work. Now I like using the touchpad, but really hate living without two-finger tap for right-clicking. Please help me with this, thank you in anticipation.

Answer:Y500 touchpad two-finger-tap not working

I seem to have found a solution but I don't know exactly why it solves the problem. It seems that the problem might be that while the Synaptics touchpad device is a PS/2 device, it keeps getting software inteference (of some sort) by being recognised as an SMB (system management bus) device. What solved the problem for me was to go to "device manager" -> "system devices", locate "Synaptics SMB Driver", and either disable it or delete it. The touchpad two-finger-tap should then immediately start working.

Recently i bought a Lenovo y500 laptop with 12 ram and 16gigs of SSD. It came with Windows 8 by deffault and what i wanted was to install Linux Ubuntu 12.04 alognside with the Windows 8. It didn't work out, because i could only log into linux. When i tried to log in in Widonws it said: "unknown command drivemap      invalid EFI file path, so i used the one key recovery. It loaded Windows but i noticed 2 things:1st. After loading the Lenovo logo the screen turns black without the cursor on it and stays that way for about 17-25 sec. That means that from 20 sec boot time now it is 40+.How could i fix that one?2nd. After creating the backup i divided the 1tb disk into smaller discs and after the rocovery they were the way i left them with all the games and media on them. I thought that the one key recovery would undo the partiton i have made. The 2nd one isnt bugging me out so much but the 20 secs extra boot time do. The changes i have made in bios are disabling secure boot and switching boot mode from UEFI to legacy. After that i switched secure boot to enabled and the boot mode to UEFI as it was in the beginning.

Answer:Lenovo y500 black screen after the lenovo logo slows down boot time

hi psskobraa,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Regarding your questions:
1. The additional 17-25sec boot time is probably caused by the UEFI Firmware / UEFI boot loader (see this flowchart) - this probably got modified when you installed Ubuntu. Can you try to boot back into the BIOS, press F9 to load default settings then press F10 to save It settings. If this doesn't work, is the boot time the same when Disabling Secure Boot and UEFI set to Disabled/Legacy first?

2. OneKey Recovery usually reimage the OS partition only (i.e. C:\) and will not affect any other partitions (i.e. D:\)

So I have issues with two-finger tap to right click, but nothing else. Upon reinstalling the Synaptics driver, two finger tap to right click works as expected. Once I sleep or reboot the computer, only two finger tap to right click breaks. Every other gesture continues to work exactly as expected. This is 100% reproducable on my machine. Clearly this is a software issue as it works perfectly right after I install the driver, but I'm lost as to how to solve it from there. I have to CLICK with two fingers to get a right click.Palmcheck works. I can finally use my keyboard and touchpad AT THE SAME TIME.But.. The movement sucks. When I move the cursor around slowly, it jumps around and is inaccurate. Does anyone know a driver that works? I NEED palmcheck, otherwise I cannot use my touchpad and keyboard at the same time.

Hi Everyone, I just ordered a new Y500 a few days ago with the model number 59371966. Do all newely manufactured Y500's have the touchpad and keyboard issues fixed? Does this model come with the Synaptics touchpad or the Elan touchpad? Has anything been done with the always on USB to ensure that the keyboard can work with it? Are the random key presses still an issue? (IE Typing 66666666 will result in 6666'6666) I've heard that lenovo at one point was sending stock from before the 28th of November 2012 when the manufacturing issues arose, is this no longer an issue? Thanks

This laptop is three weeks old, newest model with 16gb ram, 1tb drive + ssd cache, 750m graphics. It has the Synaptics trackpad / touchpad.  It appears to freeze and become unresponsive after using any number of two finger gestures. The last time it occurred this morning was doing the two-finger tap for the right-click menu.I've updated to the latest Synaptics driver, and it still happens.

Here is my tragic history.I bought my Y500 about 2 month ago. From the begging i was experience the touchopad issue. I search on internet and found information about common touchpad issue in Y500 regarding the ELAN hardware (laptops made in the end of 2012).So, the only solution was to send my laptop to lenovo service (in Poland). It was very big issue when you have to send your brand new laptop to the SERVICE and wait for it some more time... but on the other hand i was satisfied that the issue is common and will be quickly fixed. And there was first dissapointment...I call Lenovo in Poland and "TECHNICAL ENGINEER" said me that he doesn't know about any issue with touchpad. OK - now one knowes everything... then the "ENGINEER" said me to try reinstall the drivers ( it was very strange because the laptop was brand new...) and after he provide me an RMA numer to send laptop to the service. Second dissapointment...After few days i receive my laptop and looks that the ELAN hw was change to Synaptics. Please imagine my irittation when in point of that  the touchpad issue was still not fixed. The pointer has imprecise movment and some time goes alone to the top of the screen. The symptomps was little difference than  with ELAN hw but still have issue wich prevent user on the laptop from correct work. The question is, why they send back my laptop if the problem is still present ?? Then i send it another time to lenovo.... Question: Cleaning Touchpad

I know these things are sensitive, would there be anything that would be a horrible idea for me to be using to clean the crud that sometimes builds up on my laptop's touchpad?

Answer:Cleaning Touchpad

This is from Synaptics website:

If your TouchPad is dirty, use a small amount of ammonia-based window cleaner on a clean cloth and gently wipe the surface of the TouchPad to remove any dirt or grime.

Hello Lenovo Comunity, Just now my Y500 ideapad doesn't want to start up past the initial Lenovo screen. The last time i used it i locked it with Ctrl+Alt+Del and then i came back from a meeting and the laptop was off. I tried turning it on and realized the battery was nearly empty so i plugged it in. I have tried to pull the battery out, turning it on and off multiple times but to no avail. I woke up this morning with the laptop still on and it was hot so maybe that would be a possibilty but i used it for a few hours after that and it was still working fine until this moment just now. Im really in panic because the laptop is really important for my study (gamedesign). It is running windows 7 and doesn't respond to any keypress except the key combinations with the "Fn" key Does anyone have any ideas of what the case might be?

In Windows 8 the option is called SmartSense. Disabling this worked for me.

Press Win+W to bring up Settings Search
Type "synaptic"
Double Click "SmartSense"
Slide the Slider all the way to "Off"
Click "Close" and then "OK"

This will Disable the Anti-Palm detection which prevents simultaneous Keyboard and Mouse use. I recommend you re-enable this feature when you're not gaming as otherwise you risk problems while typing.

Hi,My white Z580(9 moths old)'s is looking too bad now a days, the notebook's speakes are creating lot of buzzing sound when dolby theatre is turned on(with kmplayer, itunes i never use full volume unless if it is necessary) and dolby theatre sometimes itself hangs and stops,Touch pad is really irritating sometimes, the pointer doesn't respond to the instruction(though i reinstalled the synaptics driver twice),everytime i have to restart my notebook whenever this happens. Also the touchpad itself been over stained for my normal days use and now its difficult for me to remove the brown colour thats got coated on it problem in both ways, with the functioning and look. Will the speakers and touchpad be replaced as i have got 1yr replacement gaurantee? Please reply if you guys have any solution for these issues.

I had to open the laptop casing and used this to wipe the usually hidden edges of the sensitive surface of the touchpad with a damp cloth. After reassembling and starting, the touchpad seemed working as the pointer responded to the touch. I had to re-attach the keyboard. After that the touchpad was not recognized. The connection to the mainboard seems fine but I re-plugged it. If relevant or not (assuming the touchpad is responsible only for moving and clicking), if the pointer happens over a link, the URL is shown, that is the pointer is active. 1) The connection to the touchpad seems to have no plug, i.e. is soldered, and I didn't check it. Should I, even after a short intervention that I did? 2) There is a dark glossy bulging surface ca. 1x.5" on the bottom (back) of the touchpad. Just in case, should this be open or covered? 3) Should I need a replacement, how do I find compatible ones?

Question: My new Lenovo Y500

Hi and seasons greetings to all,  I have a brand new Y500 it is standing next to two other lap tops, one a Sony Vaio and a Fijutsu Siemens machine and is about 2m from my wireless router. Both of the non-Lenovo brands show that the wireless reception is excellent and the Y500 scrapes home with good???? Have not tried it from other locations yet as I am still busy loading programs etc. In addition why are such machines delivered with 2x512MB's of memory when surely its well know that this is the minimum for Vista. As the machine has only two slots one has to immediately THROW AWAY two perfectly good memory chips if one wants or needs to upgrade. Has the green revolution not got to Lenovo yet? The last issue is the lack of quality of the User Manual that is often a first impression of the product and the company.  Although I not a native English speaker I  have learnt one thing - if you cannot do the job perfectly at least get someone who can (perhaps that is the influence of working for 33 years with IBM). The manual started off well but then the wording deteriorated so much so that at times descriptions of actions made no sense. Surely Lenovo can afford a qualified translator and an English speaking engineer who checks the wording against the machine/equipment? If you cannot achieve this perhaps you would send any new equipment and instruction manual to me and I will get my wife (an IBMer of 22 years) to proofread the English ... Read more

Question: Lenovo Y500 Issues

So I've owned this laptop for just short of a year now and I've had quite a few problems, the most recent of which doesn't seem to be up here on the forums. Quick background on my recent issues with this laptop:-after 4 months windows 8 crashed and I lost all files, Complete formatting of hard drives had to be done-a few weeks ago I ran into the whole battery gauge issue that seems to be common and had to be sent in for service (see here)  Now that I have my computer back there are quite a few more issues with it.Wifi connectivity is spotty at bestBattery life is severely shortenedComputer would not go into sleep mode. When sleep mode is initiated, the screen goes black and the keyboard stays lit. After a few minutes the computer shuts itself off completely. The boot time for the computer takes an exceptionally long time and requires a password to be entered twiceThe "One Key" feature does not work anymoreBluetooth devices need to be forgotten and re-paired in order to connectI am running Windows 8.1 and there are no Virus's on my computer (that any anti-virus can pick up anyways)

Answer:Lenovo Y500 Issues

hi marioman25,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Regarding your concerns:
1. Just to verify, what's the Wi-Fi card that's installed under Device Manager > Network Adapters? Also, have you tried re-installing the Wi-Fi driver located under C:\Drivers\WLAN or from the IdeaPad Y500 drivers page ?

2. Can you try to download and install BatteryCare and post the detailed info on the battery.
   - Sample info
In addition, this Y500 data sheet indicates that the battery can last up to 3hrs. How many hours does it last on your end?

3. You probably have hybrid sleep enabled, can you follow this guide on how to turn if off (the guide is for Win7 but works also in Win8).

Also, you mentioned that after a few minutes the computer shuts itself off completely, are you able to wake up the computer normally? If yes, are

4. For the boot time, is there a difference if it's a warm or cold boot? Also, is the system configured with an HDD+mSATA SSD? If this is your setup, it's possible that the caching is the cause the problem. Try to temporarily disable the caching feature and observe.

Spoiler (Highlight to read)
To temporarily disable caching:
1. Press the Windows key? +R, type services.msc and press Enter.
2. On the list of services, look for Expresscache and set the Startup Type to Disabled

Hi! I'm new here in forum and I have concern about my laptop. Here's the story. I experienced the "loop boot" thing, so I tried to fix it using Recover Media, then I restore my system it works. A day passed by, when I boot my laptop I got an blue screen error (with numbers) it says that there is missing file. So I try to use Recover Media again, hoping that I can fix it but no.I contacted my technician friend (that is the first time she encounter that kind of problem but she knows about the "loob boot" thing), she told me it needs to be reformat/reset, then I told her to recover my data first. When she recovering it, she realize that the partition system is GPT and she told me that she can't access because it's GPT (at first I don't know what she's saying to me), she explained to me that my hdd is protected and it can't access manually without any software or thing (miracle or something that can give as permission). So we search for answer, we try to use a software that can clone/copy GPT partition hdds, so it works. Recovering of my data is done. And the last problem we encounter, she told me that we have 2 options, 1. is to convert my hdd to MBR (I think, that should be the opposite of GPT) and 2. to have a Win8 installer for GPT, so she can reformat my laptop. I told her that could she try to use Recover Media and use the "Reset my PC" option but she said it won't work because my OS is corrupted, the only way to fix it is to reformat. So I say ok what should ... Read more

Answer:Lenovo IdeaPad Y500

Corruption of ONLY the Windows OS DOES NOT corrupt the recovery mechanism.

If your recovery partition is corrupted then recovery will fail.

I do not recommend coverting GPT to MBR, GPT is the new format and helps maintain efficiency and is recommended for all new systems.

You can use a Win 8.1 installer (I think that is what is available from Microsoft now) and make a bootable USB/DVD from it and install Windows. If its the same version as currently on your system, the windows should get activated automatically.

Do you have a NOVO button on the laptop? (a small button which has a rounded arrow on it)
This button can be pressed to recover your laptop to factory settings and can remove corrupted windows.
(It is the same as using a recovery disk/USB)

Could also be the case that your HDD is failing, resulting in corrupted files. You can run the Storage and Memory tests from here (Make sure you download right versions 32/64 bit) -

Hello, Today I resived my Lenovo y500 and i'm not impressend. The touchpad of the PC does not work right, the mouse keeps moving even when I dont move the touchpad + the screen has some problems. The screen is some time pink or green, that depends on how you move the screen but I don't get the right colors. I ordered the y500 because I couldn't wait longer on the y510 (delayed for a month) and I regret that. What can I do I can't send my laptop back because I want without, my school started this week and they refuse to allow me to class if I dont have a laptop.

Answer:Lenovo y500 problems

Buy another one from a differnt company and send this one back for a full refund.  It's pathetic that Lenovo takes a month to deliver these machines. I'm waiting on mine and highly considering buying a Sager instead and caceling my order tha's been delayed already from a three week initial delivery estimate. Newegg or Amazon deliver in less then a week! If I knew Lenovo took this long I would have never made the purchase to begin with.  The trackpad issue is known, I think there might be a driver update that might help you, try seeing if you can do that. The screen I'm not sure but seems like it has poor viewing angles, which I've also heard from other users. In other words, it's normal.

Hi, I have a problem with my Lenovo Y500 (i7-FHD-16GB RAM, so no dual-GPU, although with Ultrabay). The performance is very good but where I have problems is that the GPU. What is it? Is that if I disconnect the GPU outlet does not serve or works by 10%, ie if I want to disconnect and play in the room for a while I can not.Is it a software or hardware error? As security have told me that I can change the mainboard but I read that is a problem if Lenovo.Does anyone know a similar case or has this happened? My GPU does not help if it is connected to the outlet, and I have the settings on high performance and power management have gone to PCI XPRESS but I get the option of maximum or high performance GPU I only get 3 (Off, moderate yield and low yield)

Hello, I have a problem with my lenovo y500, right now my laptop won't boot to Windows 8, it stays in the lenovo black screen and shows "preparing automatic repair" loading for many minutes. Also when it boots, goes to a blue screen where I can choose options like recovery and stuff, the thing is that when I click it, it says that the hard drive is locked and I don't know what to do.

Update:

I don't even get to be in windows, it doesn't boot at all.

I made a restore with one key recovery and still won't boot. I really don't know what else to do, since this M$ system of not providing a win 8 key with the laptop that the user can see won't let me download a new win 8 iso from the official website.

I?ve downloaded an enterprise version wich doesn't work either, so now Im downloading a pirate version to see how it goes.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Reformat Lenovo y500...

HiIf you haven't played with the partitions, then the best way to go about it is one key recovery. Shutdown laptop, press the novo button(It is a small button near the power button or at the side of the machine) and then it will boot into recovery environment. From there, you can recover to factory state. However, if it doesn't work, I strongly suggest, you order recovery disks from lenovo. Also, if you have windows 8, you can  use reset/refresh function of windows 8 alsohttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pcRegards

Hi, I know that if you're running in SLI mode, Optimus doesn't work and the system doesn't use the Intel HD 4000. But if you're running in single card mode, does the system switch to the HD 4000 when you're not playing games like with the Y580 using Optimus? This is a make or break thing for my purchase. Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Y500 and Optimus

No Optimus, HD 4000 disabled even with non-sli model.

Hello, I have a problem with my lenovo y500, right now my laptop won't boot to Windows 8, it stays in the lenovo black screen and shows "preparing automatic repair" loading for many minutes. Also when it boots, goes to a blue screen where I can choose options like recovery and stuff, the thing is that when I click it, it says that the hard drive is locked and I don't know what to do

Answer:Win 8 in lenovo y500 won't boot

I have run into the exact same thing. This must be caused by a windows 8 patch b/c the hard drive is 100%. Roll back your laptop from the repair menu (if even possible) to a prior restore point. If you get a successful rollback please let me know. Thanks!

Hi,I have a two year old Y500, dual booting Linux and Windows 8. Not under warranty. Here's the problem I'm facing. The laptop was very slow to boot the last week, probably because it went to sleep and was taking time loading the saved RAM image. But now, it stopped starting up altogether. When I press the power button, the CPU fan starts running, I can hear the HDD spinning as well. I can also change the back lit light brightness of the keyboard. But no display. Pressing caps lock or num lock doesn't toggle the indicator. Most importantly, when I connect or remove the power supply, I can hear a beep from the speakers. Just one single beep.Checking online, many forums suggest that this could be a RAM failure or a motherboard failure. So, I took the RAM out, put it in the other port, still the same. I also tried rubbing the metal contacts with an eraser and trying, still no changeHow can I be sure this is a RAM failure? If yes, which RAM should I get?

Answer:Lenovo Y500 RAM issues

If you have another laptop, you can try swapping the RAM and seeing if that fixes the problem. If it does, Corsair and GSkill make good gaming RAM. I'm not sure what CPU you have but I'll assume it can handle 1600MHz . If that's the case I'd personally recommend Corsair Vengeance which you can get either 8GB or 16GB of (starting at $52). It has good CAS latency, 9-9-9-24, a tiny bit lower than the GSkill.

Y510p: i7 4700MQ (Overclocked to 3.6GHz), SLI GT 755M (Each Overclocked 111MHz), Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2133MHz, Samsung 850 Pro 256GB, MyDigitalSSD SuperBoot 128GB, Intel Wireless-AC 7260, Windows 10 HomeDell XPS 13 (2015): i5 5200U, Intel HD 5500, 4GB 1600MHz, 128GB Samsung M.2 SSD, 802.11ac WLAN, Windows 10 Home (School Laptop)

I'm debating if I should pull the trigger on a Y500. Looking at:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/builder.workflow:Enter?sb=:00... The sale ends tom.  This is my first purchase directly from Lenovo.  I used to own Lenovos back in the day (T42), then switched to Dells.  Now looking to return to ibm.  I'm looking for a computer that can be used for some games and mainly for programming.  It's hard to find anything nowdays that is not 1366x768.  Although FHD seems a bit much for 15.6.  I currently am running at 1440x900 on a 14.1'' Dell Latitude.  I have a few questions for the group. 1.  Anyone have this laptop and find the FHD text too small to read? 2.  how often does Lenovo have deals on this laptop?  I really don't want to rush it. 3.  I already have a Samsung 830 2.5 7mm SSD. will this fit in the 1TB HDD slot? 4.  I typically run Ubuntu.  How does the Y500 support this linux distro?  Anyone run into major issues? 5.  I've read mixed answers on this.  Does it have optimus or not? Thanks in advance,-Sonny

Answer:Looking to purchase Lenovo Y500

Lenovo's deals really don't end, they just shift around slightly. In fact, the well after the sale on my Y500 ended, it was there for $50 cheaper -_-;

Answer:adding ssd to lenovo y500

hi ant_gamal,

Welcome to the Forums.

Yes there's an mSATA SSD slot on the Ideapad Y500. See this article as a reference. This is an ideal setup if you're planning to have an HDD+mSATA SSD. As for keeping the OneKey Recovery feature, you can try to clone/migrate the HDD to the mSATA SSD, boot from it and then observe.

If you're already on Windows 8.1, you can follow this guide on how to create a recovery drive. Alternatively, you can also use EaseUS ToDo Backup as a disaster recovery method.

Answer:Baterry For Lenovo Y500

I searched Lenovo India and was unable to locate a replacement battery for your model.  If you search eBay or Amazon for the battery you will find several sellers offering it for sale.  Prior to purchase I would double check with the seller on their return policy in case their product isn't 100% compatible.

I tried looking for the correct forum for Y500 and if this isn't the right place for a thread like this, i apologize.  I also know that this isn't a support page, but a forum for discussion.  So I've been thinking about writing about my computer for a long time now, as I wanted to read about my computer before I bought it I would want to know about the manufacturer and the product. So I'll provide some info for others.  It's been my first experience with Lenovo, and frankly it really has been a general pain to have had to rely on this to be my computer.  The first month or so with the Y500 worked alright. Games ran smoothly and I was enjoying the Windows 8 I got along with the purchase. But that wouldn't last, sadly, since this computer has deteriorated in health faster than anything I've ever payed this much money for.  The thing is, the more you use something, the more used it's going to be, and therefore (pardon my french) a bit more crappy for each passing use.  However.  When one purchases a product for this amount of money, uses it in consideration for the good of the products' health for each use, and STILL is left with a (in my opinion) malfunctioning product - It's not worth the purchase and people should know about it.  The problems I've had with the Lenovo Y500 is (including and not limited to):  Numerous inexplicable (for me and people online) crashes to desktop, complet... Hello when i look my battery % something is say 5h 00 remaining and 3 minutes later 2h 30... What is the problem?

Answer:lenovo y500 battery

The battery estimation depends on your current energy consumption. If for 5 minutes, you are just idling or just reading a web page, you will see that the estimated life increases a lot, but just playing a YouTube video or accessing the HDD with Windows Explorer and you'll see that the life decreases to 2 hours or less. In short, the estimated battery life is updated with sudden change in energy consumption, and not the average time remaining.

Hi, I have been having some trouble with my Lenovo Y500 computer. I bought this laptop a month ago, and I was able to connect to my WEP secured internet fine without any issues.  However, as of yesterday I have run into a problem. I am getting either a limited internet connection or unable to connect where in both cases I cannot use the internet. I have not changed any settings in my internet connection, except forwarding a few ports for gaming usage.  I know it is not my internet, because all other devices connected to my internet are working fine, it's just this laptop. I have tried these solutions (all have failed, or not solved my problem permenantely): - Rebooting my laptop (failed) - Troubleshooting (said something about a not being able to access the default gateway) - failed:  - connecting to ethernet: worked, i could browse internet - changed my security type to WPA2, and then back to WEP : this allowed me t use the wifi, but upon reboot it became limited once again - removing security from my laptop: as of right now, I don't have a secure internet connection. No neighbors are in range, so it's not a high security risk, but I want to be able to connect to WEP connections as well, and don't see a reason as to why I can't.  - uninstalling Hamachi and unneccessary programs: still failed I have been browsing the forums for hours, and others are also having similar probelms to me, and I've seen somewher... Hello people of the forums,I was interesting in purchasing the Lenovo Y500 from the Canadian website but there is no Sli model available. So my question is does anyone know when they will be adding a Sli model to the Canadian website because I have seen a Sli model on every other countries website I checked or is this an error on the website. So I was planning on buying it on boxing day (there are usually big sale during this time in Canada) but I was only interested in the Sli model. Do you guys think their might be a Sli model by then? (FYI boxing day is on December 26th for anyone who doesn't know) Thanks for your help -Fear1

I had heard that the lenovo y500 had been released around late october or maybe even before. Strange to know, all models not released. Maybe on new year. But i hope it comes before Boxing day.Regards

Hello Everybody! i have some mistake... and i dont know how repair it... please help!  First one, I cannot use the touhpad when a wrote something on the keyboard  secondly, when i play a game on the battery = extreme lag, and on AC = no lag.. how fix that  and last one, where i cant install dolby surround driver1Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Y500... mistake

Here is where you can probably find the drivers you're looking for: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?# Unfortunatly the lag while on battery is not fixable just because the battery wasn't designed to handle the voltage pull from the graphics card. The solution is to play while plugged in. Here is my reference for that:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Y580-lags-when-running-on-battery/td-p/8573... I don't understand the first problem you're having.

Hello, I have had my ideapad y500 for a few years now. One day my computer froze completely under normal operation. I had to hold the power button to do a manual shutdown. After that, my computer would not turn back on. When I try to boot it, I see a black screen, not even the Lenovo Logo. After about thirty seconds there is a single beeb from the computer. About thirty seconds later, the fan spins up as if under load, then a little while later the fan will quiet down and the computer will beep again. At this point, I can adjust the brightness of the keyboard backlight, turn the backlight for the screen on and off, and the caps lock and num lock LEDs on the front work, but I cannot do anything else. I have tried plugging in an external monitor to see if it is just a screen issue, but it does not output any signal to the monitor. Also important, the same thing happens when I try to boot into the BIOS using the Novo button, or F2.  I have discovered that by leaving the computer unplugged with the battery out for a long time, I can sometimes get it to get to the lenovo logo and start booting windows. However, it gets as far as the windows 10 logo, then goes black and eventually beeps, as above. It will not fully boot into the operating system. The time it takes between working is anywhere from 5 minutes unplugged to a couple of hours.  I tried reflashing the stock bios (using a DOS bootable USB drive) and was eventually successful in reflashing the ... So i just pulled out my laptop from the bag it was in, and turned it on, i pluged the adapter and it didn't charge so i started looking what is going on. No i am sitting here with my adapter in hand and it is leaking some kind of liqued from it, it hasn't been near water .... and i have no idea what it is ... any one can help ?

Answer:Lenovo Y500 170 W Adapter

 Hi Spre4,

Don't use it, it sounds like a transformer or capacitor inside the adapter is leaking.  You could burn up the charging circuit inside the laptop if you keep using it.

If your machine is under warranty, make a call to service, otherwise, get a new adapter.

This is completely unacceptable- in less than 4 months of owning my laptop i have had to ship it back 2x- once for a defective touchpad (which they knew about and shipped anyway) and now a hard drive replacement because the bios did not recognize it!  Now I am seeing something about the battery reset gauge- just wonderful.

Why did i spend $1000 on a supposedly nice machine that needs to be repaired every 3 months.  I do not like the idea of constant shipping and handeling from New England to Texas every 3 months.  Lenovo refuses to offer warentee extensions, or other compensation for their quality machines.

It is not like this is something I bought for a luxury- I need this every day- for shcool, volenteer activities, etc.

Personally, I would love to get my money back and let lenovo keep their product and buy something that actually preformed as indicated.

Lenovo, if you would like to do something about this please let me know- howver I expect you will not (what a suprise).

Did this happen to you again? or Was it fixed and no problem was seen again? .I'm having this problem. Want to know if someone else have the same issue.

Hello guys; I bought Lenovo Y500 with SLI Configuration last weekend..  I wonder if i buy any DVD or Bluray RW Rom (internal) will it be work on 2nd GPU's slot ? Or i need to buy very specific rom for that ? Thanks.

Answer:DVD or Bluray RW for Lenovo Y500 SLI

You need the drives that are made for the ultrabay, though you probably could fix another drive to fit, but buying the standard one would be a lot easier.

Hi everyone,
My name is James and I've been using my Lenovo y500 for 2 years now (originally bought it to use for school/gaming). I've never had any problems with my laptop until I performed a battery gauge calibration using an app that was made by LENOVO. Now I know this is a known problem but what about the people who have purchased these Lenovo computers, expecting them to last? It's really not fair to the people with no more warranty because this is software that literally came pre-installed with the computer. Like, why put this app on these computers if it's going to break your motherboard? Anyways... The ONLY way I can ever charge my laptop now is by doing this annoying/tedious process that I managed to find on this forum.
link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Solution-for-laptop-cannot-detect-AC-adapter-af...1. Remove the battery (if laptop is powering on, then shutdown it first).2. Remove the AC adaptor from wall ac receptacle. 3. Once the laptop is completely powered down, plug AC adaptor to your laptop and wall AC receptacle.4. After a few second, insert battery back into the Laptop. And then, the battery will be chaged as usaul.5. You need to repeat step 1-4 above every time you unpluged the AC adaptor.

This is extrememly embarassing for me sometimes especially when I have class because people look at me like "what's with this kid's computer? it must be bad."  So, it's really ridiculous how little is being done about this... Read more
