z500 trackpoint problems - pointer freezes randomly

Question: z500 trackpoint problems - pointer freezes randomly

Hi I have a non-touch screen Z500 i7. I just checked and it is running Windows 8. It is brand new. Out of the box the pointer freezes sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours of usage. A restart using the keyboard resolves it. I have followed the instructions in another thread here to update the touchpad drivers (they are the elan ones). I would welcome advice and a solution. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: z500 trackpoint problems - pointer freezes randomly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In fact it transpires the update despite saying it has updated is not working (or perhaps it has and the driver has not been updated since 2012): Elan30/8/201211.4.8.1 Update driver is greyed out. I am running windows 8 64 bit.

Hi, I have win98 on my laptop right now along with win2000 dual boot, at first I had win 98, then I decided to upgrade to xp and with that the mouse pointer was there but didn't move at all, on the ibm website it said the new driver was only good for win2000 on my model of thinkpad so I installed win2000, upgrade and then clean install with the newest driver for that model, now there is no mouse pointer at all, I had to put 98 on so I could use the laptop, any ideas?

Hi! Just got a new T410. Since the first start of the system the mouse pointer is drifting over the monitor (upwards). When I remove the trackpoint cap nothing changes. The only thing to stop the drifting is to switch off the track point. Do you have an idea how I can stop this drifting of the track point?

Answer:drifting mouse pointer with trackpoint

Welcome to the forum!

Check to make sure you're not resting your finger on the TrackPoint when you're not actively using it.  That may stop the drifting that's going on.

Not sure if anyone else saw this issue before - I have a razor orochi bluetooth gaming mouse (dpi 6400) connected to my x1c (1st gen). The mouse moves too fast to use, so I reduced the mouse pointer speed. Then it turned out my trackpoint moved too slow to use.Wonder if there's a way to set pointer moving speed for trackpoint and mouse sperately?

Answer:Anyway to set pointer speed for trackpoint and mouse seperately?

Tried all possible solutions online, none worked. Then I desperately tried installing synapse, the game software from Razor, and turned out it was not just a game configuration managing tool, but also included driver. And with that, the mouse slowed down to reasonable speed and the trackpoint is not affected. Yay.

I'm having this issue using the trackpoing of my X200 where after a little bit of use the mouse pointer will move all by itself in the direction that I last applied force in the trackpoint. The pointer moves for a second or two, even when no force is being applied to the trackpoint, and then it stops. From that moment on the trackpoint behaves normally until a few moments later it will suffer from the same behavior again. Is this normal of Lenovo Trackpoints or am I dealling with defect hardware or drivers here? Thanks in advance for the answers

Answer:X200 Trackpoint pointer moves all by itself then stops

This quite normal. Only happens when you have been using the TP intensively/

Hi Guys,I've had a problem with the screen of my X100e that I started to notice a few months after purchasing it. Basically the TrackPoint & its buttons have gradually worn marks into the screen. It happened so gradually at first that I didn't really notice it unless the screen was under bright lights, but now it's to the point of being (pardon the pun) an eyesore.I contacted Lenovo by their online technical support feedback form. I also contacted them directly by email. I also took photographs highlighting the evidence. My problem is that my warranty is now extinct. Between 'trying' to contact Lenovo & getting to this point I had the usual sickness & family issues one tend to have to deal with while a warranty is slowly clicking away...I've had no further contact from Lenovo. I was wondering where I stand. I still have the copies of the emails I sent while my warranty was valid. I've also kept the photographs I took while my warranty was still valid.I wouldn't usually worry but I've come to love my little X100e & now the screen impacts the quality of watching movies, etc.As Lenovo doesn't answer my emails, can anyone offer any advice or information regarding having seen this particular issue before. Phone support in Australia hasn't been the best either, btw...Many thanks in advance,Simon ParsonsPS. I'm getting to my wits end with my laptop. I have a Z500 Touch, windows 8, and I love it apart from the fact the mouse keeps randomly disappearing. I have no idea what triggers it. It's whilst I'm using my laptop too, it doesn't disappear after it goes to sleep or is locked etc.

Tried several different things, ctrl alt delete, F6 etc, none working at the moment. Tried to see if any of my devices needed fixing, and that was a no go too. I don't have a usb mouse to plug in at the moment, and I'd prefer to figure out how to stop or at least fix this without having to get one if at all possible

I don't know if this is a setting or a button I keep accidentally pushing, but if someone could please tell me how to get my mouse cursor back I'd be eternally grateful as this is driving me insane - the only reason I could even get on here was because this is touchscreen, but I miss my mouse pointer!!

Answer:Z500 Touch - Mouse Pointer Disappearing

hi emmz992,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, did you encounter this issue the first time you setup the PC or you just encountered this lately?

If it's just lately, can you try one of the following:
1. Disable "hide pointer while typing" under Control Panel (large icon view) > Mouse > Pointer Options Tab and enable "Show location of pointer when i press CTRL key"
  - Link to picture

2. Uninstall the Touchpad Driver (ELAN or Synaptics) under Control Panel > Programs and reboot. Upon logging back in, Windows will use a generic touchpad driver. Try to observe the mouse pointer behavior and observe (you can always re-install the touchpad driver by navigating to D:\Drivers\Touchpad or by downloading the driver from the lenovo website).

3. Boot in Safe Mode with Networking and observe the mouse pointer behavior. If all goes well, perform a clean boot and observe. If same problem, perform a System Restore in safe mode to undo any possible updates that was installed on the system (ensure that you make a backup copy of your files).

Hey! I have a problem with the following symptoms on a T61 9659 CTO model. - trackpoint randomly stops working during use or after wake up- this issue appears under Windows 7 64 bit and also Ubuntu Linux- there is nothing in the system log- sometimes, after waking up, neither of trackpoint and touchpad are usable and ultranav options are greyed out for both.- A full power cycle is alwas helps (poweroff, cold start) but a reboot or sleep/wake cycle is also helps sometimes)- as far as I notived, this behaviour can happen even if I leave the machine on the desktop alone (no physical impact on the chassis)- during these, keyboard remains operational (despite that they share the flex cable with the trackpoint) So what I think is less likely:- driver issue (2 different OSs, same behaviour)- cable issue (working keyboard, also happens when notebook us untouched) So, what? I saw a lot of topics about this, because this issue showed up on different models (also non-lenovo products are affected) and I really annoyed and want to find out the root cause. Buying a replacement keyboard, new notebook, anything else is not an option. I hope, there are a guy out there with a circuit drawing or something like this, who can help. Yes, I tried to reinstall ultranav driver, etc, blah blah blah. This is an issue, not just a driver bug. Thanks for any help!

Answer:T61 trackpoint stops randomly

Findings so far:- After a BIOS reset and a power management drive update, this issue seems to be solved- Notebook ran for almost 8 hours w/o any problem- After setting power plan to optimize performance and a sleep/wake up cycle, problem appeared again, but gone after switching to other power scheme

A week or so ago the Trackpoint on my T60P (2007-AE7), running XP SP 3, started freezing a minute or two after booting the machine or waking it up.  Occasionally after a pause of a few minutes it will start working again on its own for a few seconds. I can?t relate the freezing to anything I changed on the machine.  And the machine doesn?t run hot ? I had a problem with the fan, which stopped working a couple of weeks ago; I removed, cleaned and oiled the fan, and it now works fine again. An external mouse I connected works fine at all times, as does the keyboard. What may provide a clue is that I normally only activate the Trackpoint alone without the Trackpad.  I notice that when both are active and the Trackpoint stops working, the Trackpad continues to work properly as do all the mouse buttons.                                                                                       Sometimes when the Trackpoint has stopped working and I activate the Trackpad, the Trackpoint will start working again for a little while.... Hello, I have been experiencing this issue for quite a long time. Initially I thought it was due to an update for Windows XP, but I couldn't find any message on the logs when the laptop hangs. I re-installed XP several times to discard any software-related incompatibility, but even with a fresh install it was happening. I recently realized after several tests that the problem occurred more frequently when moving the mouse (trackpoint or touchpad) right after system boot (either cold boot or boot from hibernation). What I found out is that it will no longer happen if I suspend the laptop after the system has started, not touching the mouse. The symptoms are that Windows freezes. No HD activity at all, system doesn't respond to any mouse/keyboard input. If I close the laptop cover the system doesn't hibernate. The only way to resume normal operation is pressing the power off button for a few seconds, so the system turns off, then turn on normally. All drivers are up to date. Has anyone experience this issue? Thanks

Yes, I'm having the same problem on my T60--the less I use the trackpoint, the longer I have until the system freezes.  It's OS-independent too (I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and XP).

I have a brand new T510, coming from a T61p. Everything is GREAT but ONE thing... Occasionally when I am using the trackpointer (which I do often) the left click button will lose the click that it has, let me try and explain... I click down to grab a window and drag it, start dragging, suddenly without depressing the button at all, it just drops the window, and then the click kicks back on a split second later either grabbing something else or clicking something else giving it the focus. I can replicated it occasionally and opened paint, started drawing a long curvy line without unclicking the button and the line ends up with breaks in it! Has anyone had this issue? It is VERY irritating...

We have a T400 running Windows 7.  The past two months the TrackPoint / TrackPad has been freezing.  Sometimes if frees up after a few minutes or seconds.  Sometimes it's ok for 15 seconds and then it'll freeze again.  I've installed the latest driver / utilities for UltraNav.  That did not help.   Updated other ThinkPad drivers / software but no improvement.  Any suggestions?

Answer:T400 TrackPoint TracyPad freezes

'afternoon.

do you get the same behavior if you safe-boot Windows? if not, then it's likely a corrupt driver or driver conflict. you might also want to try booting a Linux Live cd. if you get normal behavior, that would likely rule out a true hardware fault and put it back on Windows.

The mouse cursor jumps around the screen randomly on my Z500 laptop which I just over a year old.  I checked with the retailers as to their advice, and they said: "To rule out that the problem is software rather than hardware related it is advisable to perform a system recovery on your machine. To do this you will need to launch the Disk2Disk recovery feature (which should already be installed on your machine). This will return your system to factory settings and will delete all existing data stored on the hard disk drive." This appears a bit radical a solution. Does anyone please have an alternative?

Answer:Mouse cursor jumps around the screen randomly on my Z500

I have the same issue on my Yoga all of the time. The mouse randomly moves around clicking & opening icons in my taskbar. It does it over and over no matter how many times I close the opened icons. The only way I know to fix it is to restart my computer. If I am in the middle of something time sensitive and do not have time to restart, it is impossible to get anything done. I wish I knew what causes it or another possible fix.

For quite awhile, I've been encountering a mouse pointer problem on my PC (Windows 10), and its driving me nuts because it never happened while I was on Windows 7.

The cursor occassionally or randomly stops moving when I move the mouse consistently.

Demonstration: http://i.imgur.com/03kbZJx.gifv

In the demonstration, I moved my mouse consistently towards right, but cursor stops moving at few instances while my mouse is still moving. To put this into what it feels like, it feels like something is pulling or stopping the cursor randomly, if cursor is stuck, it won't move if I move the mouse less than 2mm in all directions but it will move if I move the mouse greater than 2mm in all directions. Sometimes it happens more often and sometimes it happens less.

My mouse is Logitech G502, I believe my mouse has no problem because I tried it with my laptop (Same OS and Mouse driver) and it worked perfectly fine.

My mouse driver don't need update. (HID-compliant mouse, 10.0.10586.0)
My GPU driver don't need update. (NVIDIA, 10.18.13.6519)
I don't have Logitech Gaming Software installed.
I tried different USB ports (2.0 or 3.0) and it makes no difference.
The problem still happens in safe mode.
Reinstalling Windows shall be my last resort.

Any suggestions?

Hello, on my ThinkPad Yoga (version 03/2015) with Win10 pro (latest updates installed) the Trackpoint randomly stops to move the cursor. The issue can be present right after booting or occur anytime, even running the device multiple hours without experiencing any problems is not uncommon. However, the three buttons still work properly when pressed. The same holds for the touchpad, an external mouse and any input via touchscreen (finger and pen). So, it is really "just" about the red rubber point itself.Sometimes suspending to RAM solves the issue for a short time. The problem seems to occur slightly more often when running on battery but I am not fully sure about that. Furthermore, only the Trackpoint of the ThinkPad itself is affected, I have not experienced this for the Trackpoint of my external ThinkPad Compact Keyboard .  I have the latest UltraNav drivers from the Lenovo website installed, version 19.0.17.22. Of course, I have taken out the rubber and checked for dust. The only thing left would be to try reproducing the issue using a Linux Live system but this is hard to do due to it occuring randomly. Does anyone have any guesses? Does this sound like a driver issue or something hardware related (some sort of loose contact or the like: Sometimes it seems that movement of the device causes the failure of the TrackPoint)? I feel a little reluctant to have replaced the mainboard on spec but I do not know what else to do. Thanks in advance.

The trackpoint freezes and I can not move it anymore. To solve this I need to do an Alt+F4 to close password Manager and get back trackpoint control.  The error is intermitent, it had happened me twice on that page, but I don't know the exact stepts to reproduce it.RegardsMartin

Answer:Windows 8 - Firefox - Lenovo Password Manager - Trackpoint freezes

Hi, Martin

Have you tried to reproduce this error in other browsers/other versions of Firefox? Also, has this error ever occurred under any other circumstances? Finally, does the mouse or the Trackpad freeze? If you can, try reproducing this error with an external mouse connected and see if you can move the mouse with that.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I have 2 problems with my computer, both of which require me to hold the power button down for 5 seconds to hard reboot (and I wait 30 seconds before turning it back on because I heard that was good somewhere...). My computer either:

A) randomly loses signal to the monitor, resulting in the monitor going to sleep while my computer is still on. When this happens, audio from iTunes continues to play normally, but I cannot pause it or control the volume which I can usually do from my keyboard. This leads me to believe that I have absolutely no control over my computer when my computer loses signal with the monitor. This can happen at any time... when I'm playing a videogame, browsing the internet, or when the computer is locked and I'm not using it at all.

B) randomly freezes. This locks up the computer completely and I am unable to move my mouse or control anything. I don't know if audio continues to play because this hasn't occurred while I've been listening to something on iTun... Read more

I'm hoping that the issue isn't the CPU, Graphics Card, or Hard Drive, as those would cost me the most trouble / money.

Could it be an issue with the BIOS? I don't really know what that is or how it works.

Help!, I'm running an i7 Z500 IdeaPad on windows 8.1 all fully updated and only 6 months old! All seems fine until I introduce a SD card into the SD card reader. Trying to access the SD card through My Computer, the PC hangs and needs restarting to clear. The SD card is recognised in This PC view displaying an icon under devices and drives. The 'green bar' next to This PC inches along until freezing right at the end. The only way to clear this is to then restart the PC. There appear to be no issues within device manager, the PC is free from viruses (scanned with Malwarebytes, Spybot, Microsoft scanner and Housecall), SFC and DISM scans are all clear and the PC has read SD cards (including this one) successfully previously, so I'm at a bit of a loss as what to try next. Is anyone having any similar issues or got any suggestions as what to do next? I'm really frustrated at my inability to diagnose the issue and resolve it, so any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks in advance,

Myself, along with a couple of other people on this forum have been experiencing the exact same problem. I also found some other people on other virus help forums who have the same problem as well. This new ?virus? seems to be spreading, and no one seems to know what to do about it. It just started during the beginning of April.

The main problem is that my computer just keeps randomly freezing. It can happen every 10 - 15 minutes or even up to an hour. The computer just freezes and you can?t do anything except for seeing your mouse move around. Ctrl alt delete does nothing at all either. It just locks up and you are forced to manually turn off the computer and restart it. It is extremely frustrating. It all started during the beginning of April where my computer restarted on its own, then it just started freezing up.

I ran several anti virus programs, spy ware removal programs, and an AVG scan and could find nothing of any relevance. I even had a technician come to my house and he couldn?t find anything. He thinks that it?s the memory or ram, but I highly doubt that, my laptop is only like 2 years old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a new virus I believe and it is driving me insane, thank you!

I have ran a Malware Antimalware Bites scan, AVG, Ad Aware, Spybot, and SUPERAntiSpyware scans, all found nothing.

I did format the hard drives when i did all this upgrading. I updated the ASUS bios to 1005. I have the newest video card drivers. I have run memory tests already and no errors came up.

Hi,I have compaq pc with xp sp3 with compaq optical mouse. But since three to four days the mouse pointer freezes on the screen permanently or for say 10 to 20 seconds and gets normalized when i click escape button. Is it because of virus or spyware. Two months ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series with Windows 10. The mouse pointer freezes whenever i click on something; it's fine while i am typing. it's so frustrating! i would return the computer if i could. The system is like new.
I ran the System Scans under Dell Help & Support. I ran the basic test and then the extended test.
Overall Test Result: Passed. I saved the test log.
Next, I looked under Advanced Troubleshooting, System Fixes, Touchpad, and I chose "The mouse cursor does not move when using the touchpad." I clicked "Fix It". The touchpad worked fine in the two tests.
Last, I tried to upgrade the touchpad driver, but Windows says I have the latest driver installed.

I use a Logitech laser mouse but still leave the Dell USB mouse connected with no problems, but twice recently the screen pointer has frozen, totally unresponsive to both mice (mouses?), the only solution being the OFF switch.

On reboot, it's fine, but it's happened twice now. Is this Microsoft's way of telling me to buy a new computer?

Appreciate thoughts.

Answer:Mouse pointer freezes

What is the model# of your Logitech mouse? By Laser mouse, I assume you mean Wireless? Have you changed the batteries in the mouse? Is the USB connector plugged into the back of the computer or the front? The front are much weaker USB ports?
Go to the Logitech site Product Support & Software Downloads: Mice - Logitech and find your model and download an updated driver for the mouse.

I use a standard Dell optical mouse. Intermittently it will freeze on the screen, more often than not a few minutes after boot.

The only way to resume is to close down by the computer box's front button and reboot. Sometimes that too is a problem and I have too power off and on at the wall, then power on the computer.

A day or so back the box light was yellow and the computer was beeping when I attempted the power off on routine, but a further power off and on again after the evening meal cured ( temporarily?) the problem.

I have run diagnostics and symptom tree and nothing amiss is reported.

Ideas folks?

Answer:Mouse pointer freezes

Hi rundwald,

Please check if the system freezes up while using a specific application; try to notice if any such pattern is evident. You referred to some 'beep sounds' from the computer; also capture and share the number of beeps and their repeat pattern. (Number of beeps may help us determine if it is hardware failure)

Since the 'Hardware Diagnostics' have passed, a software issue/conflict is likely. You may perform the following steps for more clarity:

1. Check the computer functionality in 'Safe Mode'; see if it still freezes up
2. You may also perform a clean boot and see if that helps: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
3. If the issue persists, you may also ensure that all power cables are securely connected to the system board; also ensure that the main power cable and front panel cable are also securely connected (Steady amber Power light indicator may point at a 'system fault' error)
You may want to refer to the 'service manual' of Inspiron 560: Documentation Note: Please follow all safe measures mentioned in the document while working on the computer.

Please share the details of 'security software(s)' installed in the system; system may freeze up intermittently due to a conflict between 2 security applications. Also check if you encountered any error message(s) in the system.

Do reply with the findings; would be glad to assist.

I recently got a new SL410 from Best Buy.  The system runs Windows 7 64Bit and for the most part I really love it.  The only problem I have with the system is that occasionally the pointer will freeze, and I have to tap on the track pad to get it to move again.  Not really a critical problem but still annoying.  I'm guessing this is a "feature" that I can turn off.   Does anyone know how I can do this?

Guys I've been using this little Thinkpad x120e for years: I can't find a replacement that does as much as well .
I just did a fresh install of win7 x64 home premium on a new samsung 840 pro ssd. it all works swell.

except today: doing absolutely nothing unusual, running on battery, I left my unit closed for a while, came back, opened, started to work, and the cursor was gone. Not just hard to see, but gone. had to use keys to migrate my way out of everything safely and power down to get it back.
I checked the System logs for a related error but see none. I have errors, but nothing relating to the touchpad.

the thinkpad of course uses the combo joystick and touchpad with buttons for each. the driver I chose to install on purpose however is the generic microsoft 'mouse' driver. I have always used it that way since I bought the system because the Ultranav software/firmware is buggy [long story]. never had this issue before now.

how to troubleshoot? logically this would seem to be a power policy thing, but why the random occurrence? I've been using it every day on battery, and every day plugged in also. first occurrence. no updates to the driver: I don't allow auto updates

Answer:Fresh install: Touchpad pointer lost after sleep. randomly.

The graphics driver is also involved. It could be a conflict with the graphics driver or a problem with the graphics driver.

Are you using the same graphics driver as before?
Have you tried uninstalling the mouse and joystick from Device manager and rebooting? (they will be reinstalled with the generic Windows driver)
The order you install drivers can make a difference sometimes.

Over the past 2 days (no updates or software changes) my laptop has been randomly minimising or shutting down programmes, the mouse pointer (touchpad or wireless, I have deleted and reinstalled each in turn) frequently shoots to the top right of my screen (sometimes I can bring it back easily, sometimes not).  Sometimes 'bubbles' appear there at the same time and the action centre randomly appears. I have done a full antivirus scan, also a malwarebytes one, with nothing to report on either. Please help, as I am finding it almost impossible to complete any work on my machine.

Hello everyone! I just got the Lenovo IdeaPad Z500, I7 on Windows 8 OS a couple of weeks back. Everything was working fine until just several hours ago. I had just downloaded a software for a VPN and had reboot my laptop after it had finished installing. I was able to open Google Chrome and was in the process of opening the sites I had previously been browsing when the screen froze. I didn't think much of it since I had experience with the system freezing in the past. That was until my laptop continued in its frozen state and would not respond even if I moved the mouse of the track pad.  It's still in its frozen state up to now. I was even trying to push the One Key Recover button on the left side of the machine but it's still not responding. I'm hesitant to go this route though since I may not  be able to recover my files. So right now I'm basically waiting for the battery to die out and I'll see what happens then. Anyone experienced this? What do I need to do in this situation. I'd hate to lose my files as  I hdn't backed up. Help please!

Answer:IdeaPad Z500 screen/system freezes and remains unresonsive

Hi Mr_Greenfield,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can you try holding down the Power Button until it shuts Off.
If the freezing persists try Uninstalling the Software you downloaded and see if it is the one causing the problem.
If not perform a clean boot

Best Regards

Have no clue as to patterns - genuinely seems random. Previously had IE6 latest service pack loaded and it would freeze on average - 6 times a day - with no *.dmp file even though the Drwatson registry key was installed! Switched to Firefox, and immediate improvement - it now freezes randomly once every 2 days or so - often occurs when zonealarm receive green lights are on, and sometimes when many apps are open at once. Also no blue BSD would show - it just stops working - no mouse response, no keyboard response - not even Ctrl Alt Del - wait 5 minutes still nothing. I am running Windows XP SP2 Home Edition and upgraded my mouse to a basic optical mouse. My problem is that when I print a document the mouse pointer will freeze after a few minutes of printing. The only way I can "unfreeze" it is to do a hard shutdown by pushing the on-off button on my computer and then start it up again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows XP SP2 Home Edition with a basic optical mouse( connected to a non-high speed 2.0 port ). I was having some problems at first with my mouse, freezing on Startup, but managed to fix that problem by plugging it into the first USB port and slowing down the acceleration software driver. Now when I print a document to my HP DeskJet 930C and after a few seconds of printing the mouse pointer freezes. The only way I can get it going again is to to a manual shutdown and cold boot. Does this have anything to do with the slow USB ports? Anty suggesstions are gladly welcome.

Answer:Mouse pointer freezes when printing

Control panel/ mouse/ motion/ acceleration
can affect the mouse hesitating across the screen and might have something to do with your freezing curser. Try moving it to slower acceleration and see if that helps.

Hi,
I have a D-Link KVM switch which was working fine switching between my XP SP2 computer and my Vista computer.
Then I decided to install 2002 norton goback for some stupid reason. Then my computer would not reboot. So I rebooted in safe mode and did a system restore for earlier install in the day.

But now my XP computer loses(freezes) my mouse pointer when I switch over to my Vista computer and back. The Vista computer keeps the mouse active. The only way I've found to get control of the mouse pointer back is to reboot - that's no good.
I've updated the bios. I've uninstalled the mouse driver, and let XP reinstall them. Nothing works so far. By the way 2 driver files show up for the mouse, i8042prt.sys and mouclass.sys. Am I supposed to have both these driver files? I have a PS2 mouse.

Anyone have any suggestions short of reinstalling XP, all the drivers, and programs again?

Answer:Mouse Pointer Freezes Using Kvm Switch

Sorry to hear your problem. I have both those drivers on my WinXP SP2 system, so they are not the problem. I run a KVM switch between this and a dual 98/Linux machine with no problem, so I won't be trying your Norton product. In general, I have had complete disasters with all the "roll back" utilities I have tried, including the MS checkpoint one - it always fails. If you want to do proper backups of your system volume, I suggest using the Ziff-Davis version of BartPE with DiskImageXML: it really works.
I have had problems of mouse-lockup caused by "broken" graphics drivers, but I cannot help you really; you might try reinstalling your graphics driver, a lot quicker than doing a complete reformat and WinXP install.

During bootup, the mouse pointer freezes, becoming unresponsive, and the whole bootup process halts. The only thing which gets things moving again is to repeatedly press the CD-ROM drive button, so that the caddy comes out, then to push it back in. After doing this from one to five times, things get going again. It may happen three or four times during bootup.Could the CPU be on the way out? It's a Pentium 166, running Windows 95.

Answer:Mouse pointer freezes on bootup

Possibly a system cleanup my realise some resources. Thing is Win95, bit dated now.Any programmes you do not need I would zap away carefully not taking any shared system files though. You didn't say what type of mouse you have. COM Port/seriel type connection, PS/2 or usb ?.On boot the computer loads the systems drivers, its just getting run down with age or overloading of other programes/devices. Possibly more memory would help, clean out cookies, temp internet files.

Running XP Home, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express.I'm trying to find out why the mouse pointer is doing this every now and then, by having Task manager on the screen and watching what happens at the moment the pointer freezes. It has only done it once since I started monitoring for the last hour and I had "Performance" open not "Processes", the CPU Usage went to 100% at that moment. There are 44 processes running and when I have IE open at say a "PCA forum" the Mem Usage can go up to 97%.First of all will monitoring with Task Manager help? and secondly IE has Approx. 15,000K under Mem Usage. Is the 97% figure the percentage of the portion used by IE (15,000K) or the percentage of the whole system memory?I only have a 650Mhz processor and I think this may contribute to the problem, but, the mouse pointer has only recently started to do this.I have uninstalled the mouse, a NetScroll+ Eye corded optical model, and reinstalled the drivers to no avail. I have also cleaned the sensor.Forgot to say, occasionally when the pointer frees itself it shoots off to the top left hand corner of the screen, please no cracks about "Red" mice!If I am totally on the wrong track I would appreciate any help to sort this out.Regards,Sapins.

Answer:Mouse pointer freezes, 4 seconds later it's OK?

Hi Sapins. A 650M processor isn't all that slow unless you are running something very processor intensive. I would be more interested in knowing how much memory you have. I've found that anything under 256M can cause freezes with XP. Also 44 running processes is high, my XP Pro system is currently running 36.

I have a Lenovo laptop and just installed windows 10 and now after a short time my pointer freezes for maybe 30 seconds then starts again, this happens continuosly. how can i fix this

Answer:pointer on my laptop freezes after i installed windows 10

Open settings (windows button + i) > Go to "devices" (you can navigate by pressing tab button on your keyboard once and then moving around with arrow keys) > Choose Mouse & touchpad settings (maneuver around the same way) > Choose Additional mouse options > this will open a new smaller window; choose to reset your device
You can also try disabling realtek hd audio manager if you have it. Open task manager, go to the startup tab and disable it. Reboot the machine (seems weird but give it a shot)

Hi,
I have just purchased a new Toshiba Satellite C850, everything is working perfectly however, there is one thing which gets annoying...

The pointer keeps freezing once I start using it, i.e. I can click to open an app and the cursor will freeze for a few seconds before allowing me to use it. Or, once I touch the touchpad to move the cursor it wont move for a few seconds before it allows me to continue.

Even while I'm typing, I try to move to an area to select but the cursor wont move for about a second. It does this every time.

Does anyone know why this could be happening and how it can be fixed?

Thank you

Have you noticed heavy HDD activity when this happen (HDD LED is blinking)?
Maybe some activity in the background slows down notebook?s performance.

It can be Windows updates installation or something similar.
Do you use original Antivirus application that you got with your notebook or some other favourite application?

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 my touchpad mouse pointer has developed an issue whereby it will randomly freeze for around 10 seconds. Nothing will make it work, you just have to sit and wait. Also the touchpad vertical scroll has stopped working, forcing me to manually scroll through webpages etc using the sidebar on the screen.
I read a fix whereby you disable the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the startup tab and this actually worked. Once I did that the problems disappeared. However today on bootup the problem returned even though Realtek is still disabled. Any ideas how to fix this?

I had this problem for the past 2 months.  What would happen, was that anything I tried to do by clicking mouse pointer would not work. Pointer would move, but that was it. If I hit ctrl/alt/del, then cancel, it would recover and work fine for a while. Tried various solutions, uninstalled untilities etc etc, with no luck. Finally realized what was different over past 2 months. I have been using Hotspot to share wifi connection. As soon as I turned that off, everything back to normal. Hope this helps someone.

I'm having a problem with this laptop after changing out the ram.
It's a Lenovo 3000n100, running win7 32bit. ( I upgraded from Vista.)

It originally came with 1GB ram, I increased it to 2 GB. It shows in the bios as 2 and also in belarc.

After changing out the ram, about every other time I start it up, when it gets to the logon screen, the pointer is frozen. I can log in, and on the desktop it's also frozen, so I have to use the win key and arrows to restart then it starts up normally. Once in a while, when it get to the logon screen, it's just black and then I have to do a hard shut down.

I changed the ram sticks around, made sure they are seated properly and I still have this problem.

Before buying the ram, I ran the crucial advisor and bought Amazon.com: Crucial 2GB Set(2x1GB) 200-Pin PC2 5300 667Mhz SODIMM DDR2 RAM: Electronics

IRC, I didn't have this problem with the original ram 512x2. Not even sure if it's a ram problem or not, but I haven't been able to figure out what's going on.

I have also checked the intel drivers and they are up to date.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should do?

My mouse pointer freezes or randomly changes to the 'move' pointer and zooms the page in or out when using internet explorer 9 or Firefox 18.

My computer is only 3 months old and I have had this problem from the beginning. I called Toshiba support and they had me go into the BIOS and restore default settings but it had no effect.

Answer:Re: Mouse freezes, changes to 'move' pointer and zooms in or out

Restore BIOS to default settings, reinstall operating system and test functionality with ?factory settings?.

If the same problem occurs again I recommend you to contact Toshiba again and let technicians fix it for you.

Whenever I physically move my laptop (like pick it up to move it closer or to a new location) the pointer for my touchpad freezes. I have to close my laptop and open it back up to get it working again. If i keep my laptop in the same spot it will work perfectly. This problem only happens when I physically move the laptop.

Hi- Just got a new laptop running windows 8, I'm struggling to get used the different layout at the moment!!!

When I try to play a game which needs key presses whilst using the mouse pad, the pointer freezes in place and will not move until the keys are released. It even does it when in normal use whilst typing this???

Ive tried to find the "disable pointer whilst typing" option in mouse preferences, but cant find anything that gives me the option??? Its a Synaptics touchpad v7.2 and all seems to work well apart from this.

Anyone got any ideas????

I have a 17' Samsung 700Z laptop about two years old. Lately, it has been freezing up. I'm not sure if this is a Windows issue or a driver issue or something else. It usually freezes when I am gaming but sometimes freezes when I'm using Firefox as well. Freezes, no mouse movement, audio glitches out and the only fix is to restart it. It will freeze within ten minutes again though.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Every spyware and virus detection says this computer is clean but something is eating the Ram such that the pointer stalls and must "rest" for 3-5 seconds before it can be moved again. Keyboard commands seem to work fine. Disc has been cleaned, defraged. Hard drive is only used at 15% capacity. Any ideas on what else we can try?

Dell Inspiron 1100 with Windows XP Home. 20 gb hdd, 256 mem, Intel Pentium 4 processor

Recently, it has become useless since after booting up, I can only work a couple of minutes before it freezes. The touchpad (or usb mouse) continue to move the pointer normally on the screen but clicking on anything produces no results. The keyboard does not function at this point either.

I have checked the Event Log and it only shows Errors at the time of the problem as Service Control Manager - SRTSP depends on Flt Mgr - nonexistent. Adaware and Norton Antivirus are functional and up to date. I did not use this laptop for a few months and was able to update these when I started using it again. It was working normally then. It seems that the problem may have started after Windows Update downloaded multiple updates taking hours of time (on dialup).

On booting into Safe Mode, everything seems to work correctly. The keyboard and mouse perform normally. I have reinstalled the driver for the touchpad since I originally thought that might be a problem but it hasn't helped. I also am now using a riser for the laptop to help reduce the possibility of too much heat. That has never been a problem before however.

I am not able to download anything from the net because at this time, it will not continue to function long enough to do more than go online.

I hope that someone has suggestions on how to troubleshoot this. I have run out of ideas. Thanks!

This happens any time the computer is idle for as little as a minute or longer, and takes up to 30 secs to recognize movement again.

During this time I can tell power is going to the mouse, as it lights up as normal. Also I can still scroll and click with it, I just cant move the pointer. Every other external device such as keyboard or razor nostromo works fine as well. And when active, the entire mosue works fine. Its all somehow tide into being idle, even briefly.
I should also add that this is fairly recent, within last month, issue. Prior to that the mouse worked fine. Also it appears to be getting worse and taking longer to work again. Unfortunately I wasn't very good at creating save points, so its impossible (to my knowledge) to system restore to an earlier point.

To date I have tried switching usb ports, as well as redownloading the driver for the mouse to no avail. Im at a loss as to where to even look for a solution. Any help would be vastly appreciated

I had similar problems with my home HP laptop a while back. What do they have in common? The Synaptics pointer driver. I uninstalled it on my new Dell Precision 5510, and all is well again.
You lose gestures and have a basic mouse, but it's far better than dealing with the annoyance. Maybe Dell has the clout to get the driver fixed finally?
In the meantime, I'm happy to be gesture free.

Hello, I have bought a new battery for my IBM Thinkpad T43p. In the description of the new battery I have seen that this battery is compatible with T43 series. Battery details are: DC 10.8V 5200mAh/56Wh. Replace: 08K8214. My problem is: I have ordered a new battery for my Thinkpad T43p but when I turned off  the notebook and replace the old battery with the new one the notebook became strange. I use Windows XP Prof on this computer and when the login screen appeared and during I was typing my user name and password the mouse pointer was freezed and I had to turn off the computer. It was happened within approx 1 minute after the Login screen appeared. The symptom was the same with or without plugged in AC charger. I have tried several times and the same behavior was happened. When I changed back the old battery the computer became normal again without any freezing. The fan was working properly in both cases. The symptom is the same if I change the battery during AC charging and using Windows.  I don't have an idea about the reason of it. Can you help me with ideas? Thanks in advance,Slider

My computer is acting as if something is taking up most/all of the CPU (but that's not the case) - it's running slow, the mouse pointer freezes and is "jerky", program windows don't always close or resize... I have to try a few times.

I ran CCleaner. I tried running RogueKiller... the prescan stayed at 60% complete for over a half hour (said it was checking hidden processes). I tried twice but it never finished so I couldn't scan with it.

I ran Malwarebytes, TDSS Killer, HitMan Pro and MGTools... the files are attached.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Go to Start, then Run, then type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Click on the Advanced tab

When you play certain desktop games in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, the mouse pointer may freeze or stutter. This issue occurs because Windows 8.1 introduced changes to mouse input processing for low latency interaction scenarios. Therefore, games respond to mouse inputs differently in Windows 8.1 than in previous versions of Windows.
Visit KB2908279 to download the fix.

Hi all I own a T400 and yesterday did a software update via the 'Update my System' option in ThinkVantage. It installed: Lenovo System Toolbox 5.1.5122.07Conexant Audio Features II 4.76.0.0ThinkPad Power Manager 2.42ThinkPad Hotkey Features Setup 2.10.0002 One or all of these has casued my WMP11 to become very slow and unresponsive with the whirley pointer to come up whenever I try to access my music or view the toolbar etc.. The task manager does not show anything running over 10% when this happens. Also my pointer sometimes freezes and then unfreezes randomly. I cant do a rollback because an error message comes up after reboot stating unspecified error occoured during system restore. Any ideas? Thank you

After the most recent "Lenovo Settings Update", my Windows 8 freezes for a few minutes (minimum of two) anytime the pointer hits one of the hot corners.  The system also freezes for a couple of minutes or less when certain apps are started or the mouse clicks on certain apps.  This is a repeatable error.  I can restore the system to the setpoint previous to the "Lenovo Settings Update" and everything works fine.  re-Install the update and the problem comes back.  The system also freezes for 5-10 seconds when an e-mail message comes in and the notification appears.  Also happens under other different circumstances but the worst is when the mouse pointer goes to any "Hot Corner".  I can reset the system to the last restore point and have everything work fine but anytime I go to "Lenovo Settings", it forces the update which then creates this problem. Has anyone else seen this issue?  I have all the updates for Windows 8 and Lenovo installed including all new Bios updates that are published.  The model is  a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S320u (otherwise known as the "Twist". The error is repeatable in all screen modes, tablet modes and multiple monitor modes. For now I will go back to the latest restore point but would like to see the issue resolved. Thanks. Bob

Answer:Windows 8 Freezes after last "Lenovo Settings Update" anytime the pointer goes to a corner

Are you referring to "Lenovo Settings Dependency Package"?
If so, which version works properly and which version is causing the problem?

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

I hope someone can help.  My Trackpoint has a mind of its own.  It just creeps up to the left and pins itself in the upper corner of the screen.  I have downloaded the latest drivers, this has no effect.  I am running XP S/3.  The battery problem is simply this, I don't know if the battery is 'shot' or the charger is not working.  Can anyone tell me how I can check either part before I have to buy something I don't need?I have been fooling around with this problem almost a month with no success.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:TrackPoint and Battery Problems

I had the exact same problem for months.  I finally gave up and uninstalled the trackpoint completely and started using the USB mouse that works with my tablet.  That part works great but if you can't use a mouse that plugs into the back of the computer or anything else like a keyboard that plugs into that spot.  Forgive me for not knowing the technical term for that spot. Just a note of caution - a month or two after I uninstalled the trackpoint, I started getting an error message 8611 (please see my post right below yours) and this may be related.  I'm waiting to find out. Good luck, I know it drove me completely crazy.  In the meantime, try using another mouse, preferable a USB mouse since that's the only one that seems to respond. debbie

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

Hi, I'm setting up my new thinkpad t440s and I cannot get my trackpoint to work.  It does not respond and in my mouse properties/thinkpad section, the Touchpad is clearly enabled, but the Trackpoint options are all greyed out.  In the pointing options dropdown, I can only see the option to 'Use TouchPad only.'  I strongly prefer the Trackpoint to the Touchpad and would prefer it if possible. I currently have Synaptics pointing device driver version 18.0.7.109, the most recent version.  I've tried rolling back to previous versions and this issue still persists.  I also have gone into BIOS and disabled and re-enabled the Trackpoint in boot settings. Unfortunately, since this is a work machine, I do NOT have the capability to remove the keyboard or replace parts.  Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

I just got my new ThinkPad T440s, and I'm having some difficulties getting the Trackpoint to work properly. Whenever I power up the system, the Trackpoint is responsive for a minute or so and then completely stops working, while the touchpad works just fine. I have tried re-installing/ updating the Ultranav driver, but no luck. I have also tried a complete factory restore, and the problem remains.  I noticed that when I don't have the Ultranav driver installed, the trackpoint works a little while longer but then gets a bit crazy. By that I mean moving the cursor using either touchpad or trackpoint somehow ends up opening shortcuts, moving icons or the taskbar, etc. It's hard to explain, but it's like the cursor moves all over the screen rapidly "left-clicking" and "right-clicking" all over the place.  It's strange that when I'm going through the Windows installation prompts, the trackpoint seemed to work just fine. This and the fact that it works for a minute upon start-up make me think it's a software issue.  Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try? I haven't tried doing anything in the BIOS, if there's something that could be done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:T440s Trackpoint problems

Hi zorero, You can check in the bios if the trackpoint is enabled but if it works sometimes it might be anyway. you should try to remove the keyboard, unplug the trackpad and replug it.It can be just just a connection problem where the plug is not properly attached to the motherboard. There is the link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual where you can find how to remove the keyboard: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t440s_hmm_en_sp40a25360_01.pdf Hope that helps, Vince.

Just upgraded from a T43P to a W500 and instantly I can notice how messed up the trackpoint mouse is.It just jumps randomly on its own!! Also...using the left click button does not actually click the link but thepointer actually jumps and settles down on a different part of the screen after clicking. Also every now and then, the trackpoint will stop moving the pointer(freeze) and it recovers after 4-5 seconds. This is really frustrating!! Anyone else seen this before?  DD

Answer:W500 trackpoint problems

Hello Desidon: I have always found the trackpoint device (the pointing stick) to be one of the most reliable things on ThinkPads.  I upgraded from a T42P to a W500, and did not notice any difference in trackpoint function - the stick on the W500 works as well as the stick on the T42P did. The operating system itself (Vista or XP) offers some 'options' that, if enabled, might be what is causing the unexpected behaviour you are experiencing.  If you go to the mouse control panel and have a look around in there, you will find that there is an option that causes the pointer to automatically jump to the default acceptance button in dialog boxes whenever dialog boxes appear.  I have turned that option off, I find that it is distracting. By default, both the touchpad and the trackpoint stick are enabled.  I have disabled the touchpad on my W500 because I find that I often inadvertently activated the touchpad when I am typing or otherwise operating the computer.  You can easily turn the touchpad off (while leaving the trackpoint on), the control for that is in the Mouse control panel under the "UltraNav" tab.  My guess is that if you turn off the above two options, 99% of your problems will disappear. There have been issues reported with the cursor on the screen occasionally freezing up.  That is being discussed in a different discussion (Temporary but DAILY mouse / system freezing (W500 w/ Vista Business 32), and we have no...
