Ideapad Y500 ultrabay graphics grinding noise

Question: Ideapad Y500 ultrabay graphics grinding noise

Hello, My Y500's ultrabay removable graphics started to make some weird noises. I think it may be the fan making some kind of grinding noise. I need some assistance with a replacement or a fix. Can someone lead me in the right direction for some help with my issue? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the i5-3230M version of the Ideapad Y500, with the built in NVIDIA Geforce GT650. I want to upgrade it by buying the Ultrabay SLI Graphics card for my laptop, but I have no idea which cards are compatible. Should I get the 750M card, or is only the GT 650 GN36 version compatible? Is there a list of compatible parts that I can insert into the Y500 Ultrabay slot? I'm very confused, and I don't want to put 200-300$ on something that I don't even know is compatible, yet I don't want to buy something for my laptop only to realize that there are better parts on the market.

Answer:Ideapad Y500 Ultrabay Graphics Question

You will need the GT650, you have to match the one you have already for SLI to work. Here's a link to the Hardware maintenance manual - http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_y400_y500_hmm.pdf Basically it's the Optical drive, the Graphics card (matching), an extra hard drive (they only sell it with a drive from what I can find), and a fan/cooling module (that I've never been able to find for sale). These are all listed in the normal manual too. Make sure you are upgrading your power adapter to the 170 watt version if you get the 2nd graphics card. You have to have this larger one to run SLI.

Hi there, New to the forum, hello! I recently bought a Y500 laptop from Lenovo Canada. I was satisfied with the performance but wanted a boost. I started looking for the removable ultrabay graphics card (GN36) on the Canadian website. I couldn't find it but over the next week or so, all vendors seemed to be missing this graphics card. I called into Lenovo support and was told that they couldn't find the product on the system as well. They said they'd call me if there were any updates...but for now it seems like the product is discontinued. Anyone have any luck getting a hold of one of these? I'd love to run them both together in SLI but if Lenovo has decided to discontinue this...the ultrabay option has lost a lot of interest for me.

Answer:Y500 Ultrabay Removable Ultrabay graphics discontinued?

My understanding is the Y400 version GN35 is exactly the same. If anyone knows it's not please tell me so I stop spreading this rumor... :-)http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...

The specs on the Ultrabay HDD carrier for the Y500 say it can handle a disc up to 750 gb. I want to put a 1TB disc in it. Does anyone know if this 750 gb limit is for real? I don't see why a 1TB HDD in the same carrier wouldn't work, but the spec makes me a bit nervous. Anyone have any experience with this?

Answer:Ideapad Y500 ultrabay HDD disc capacity really 750 gb?

You can always try it. It's not that you will lose a lot of money. Hard drives are cheap. I don't really why you would go through all that trouble for the little extra 250GB. At least get 1.5-2TB instead for the trouble if it happens to work. Also make sure the new hard drive doesn't consume too much power. Take a hard drive which doesn't consume much power because this may affect your battery life.

IDEAPAD Y500 is recently launched in India with a DVD writer on Ultrabay. I am thinking to buy this if I can upgrade to a Blu-ray burner. Is this is possible? Please suggest the Blu-ray burner models, price and their availability in in India.

Answer:IDEAPAD Y500- UltraBay options for Blu-Ray burner

HiFor separate models with different ultrabays, you might have to contact the lenovo dealer or any of the mega stores having it. I suppose only the model with blue ray has been released in india. Its price is around 50000 INR.

Hey I was just wondering if any ultrabay batteries fit the Y500 series. I haven't been able to find much on this, and I would assume Lenovo would release one for this machine since, one they have this for many of their other machines with ultra bays, and two this machine lacks on battery life. It would make a great addition to the laptop, considering you can't run SLI when you are not plugged in, and you wouldn't really need an extra battery if you are plugged in, i.e. you would swap the two depending on your current need. Awesome idea in theory, right?

When the GN36 Graphics card is inserted and laptop is turned back on the following error is received: Unauthorized Slave VGA Card is plugged in - power off and remove it. Are their drivers that need to be updated for this to be recognized?  This was purchased after the initial install of the laptop.

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. Any help on this unnatural whirring sound that starts after a while is really appreciated.

I've recently bought the Y500 with the dual graphics cards, and I need to obtain a CD/DVD drive. I saw on this post -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Y500-Ultrabay/td-p/1155205 that both parts may be interchangeable. Currently, the Y500 part is not available on the Lenovo store (that I can find), but the Y400's is. Does anyone know from first-hand experience if  them being interchangeable is correct? I'd rather buy from Lenovo then find the Y500 model elsewhere.

Answer:Are the Y500 CD/DVD Ultrabay and Y400 CD/DVD Ultrabay parts interchangeable?

If anyone knows the answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have a lenovo y500 core i5 and 6gb version. Have been using it for a year and having the following issues: 1) On charging , the fan sound on the left side increases to an audible level and it feels like the fans are rotating at top speed, but when the charger is removed , the noise goes and the fans also stop rotating. I tried the fan dust removal but that does not seem to be an issue. I have a 170W,20V charger.2) using windows 8.1 64 bit, the disk usage remains at 100% most of the times and the boot time is an average of 5 mins. Back when I first bought my y400 in June, I didnt buy the SLI model because I assumed (and it was advertised) that I could later buy the Ultrabay graphics. 9 months later, It still isnt availible. I've spoken to several reps that all said to wait a month (first time in November, second in January, third just a few weeks ago).  I found a card that could be used in the y400 (link), but this ultrabay has the 650m in it. From what I have gathered from several different sources is that this ultrabay is not compatibile with the 750m model. There is also a 750m y500 ultrabay, but this is too big to fit in the 750m port. I also understand that the current y410p has a gt 755m. If they make an ultrabay with that card in it, will it be compatible with my 750m? I've scoured the web searching for the 750m ultrabay, but alas, I have not found it.  So, does anyone know of when (or where) the card will be availible?  Lenovo y400 (June 2013)-i7 quad-8gb ram-(1x) gt 750m 2gb gddr5-1tb HDD

You can't upgrade the cards, you can just add a second card that matches the previous one installed in your notebook.

Hello, so the past month I have been looking at all the different Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 laptop models from here and other sites such as newegg. I saw today that they put up a new expensive model for the IdeaPad Y500 Laptop - Dual Graphics - 559371963 - Dusk Black.  I was going to buy it but I wanted to confirm from customer support if it indeed come with 2 NVIDIA GeForce GT750M cards to support better gaming with SLI. I asked support but they said it only came with 1 card instead. Any confirmation about this? If so why is it listed as Dual Graphics then? Would be dissapointed if I couldn't SLI with 2 GT750M cards. Thanks!

Answer:New IdeaPad Y500 Laptop - Dual Graphics GT750M

Just spotted this model as well, it's a must buy for me when released in Europe (hopefully soon). I'm pretty sure it does have GT750M SLI - it's clearly stated under model details.

So I've been trying to figure it out, but this is my first laptop, I've done some looking around on the forums and found some unrelated issues regarding the dual graphics cards (Most people not realizing they had the option for one or the other) and this is not that.My issue is I do indeed have both graphics cards, but only one seems to work until I plug in the battery charger. I'm a gamer, and that is why I bought this laptop, I work out of town a lot and needed something short of lugging around my desktop everywhere I went. So when I found this gem, I was super excited, and it works well. Except for the fact I have to keep the laptop plugged in at all times in order to run the second video card, I've looked under slews of options within the control panel and power saving features but nothing seems to stand out to me to indicate there is any way to play with the settings for this particular problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Graphics Card issues.

hi Jin_Trister,

Welcome to the Forums.

Your issue might be similar to this thread.

In running SLI, the unit requires a 170w power, otherwise it will only use 1 GPU as stated in this article. Also, the Ideapad Y500 is powered by a Lithium Ion 6-cell, 72Wh battery. If you're on battery power, running a dual GT 650m alone consumes a total of 90W and the unit still needs to power up the cpu, hdd, lcd, etc. so the system automatically disables SLI and underclock the GPU (and possibly the CPU) to give way to other PC components

Hello everyone, I just purchased the ideapad y500 model: 59360243 from Lenovo.com Canada after reading a whole bunch of reviews that spoke about the laptop having dual graphics cards.  My experience with computer specs is really low, so I thought the 2GB of GT650M meant there were two 1GB of GT650M (hence the "dual" graphics cards).  I recently found out that this is not the case, and that the model I purchased (which has not yet arrived) does not have dual graphics cards.   I am quite disappointed as I can purchase a model with dual graphics cards for only a little more money, or even the same money, with less RAM. If someone more familiar with this company and "ultrabay" could tell me what my options are that would be much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Question: Ultrabay Y500

Why no accessories for ultrabay?  No, but seriously, the computer is advertised to use them, they should have been released with the product line. Not to mention the horrible US Site support for the drivers. Everything can be found on the chinese website. If Lenovo admins are reading this, please update the site and add in windows 7 drivers and not just windows 8 drivers. Also, there should have been a boot disc option included. Can't even recover the hard drive that was sent out with the laptop at the moment. Then they want me to send it back in for repairs that will take weeks, when all I need is the OS disc. Terrible launch support, very dissapointed. If the partition on the hard drive gets corrupted, what should a person do??? It's just not acceptable to have to wait weeks to get it fixed.

This is the only one I'm seeing anymore for the Y500.  i believe they are about to come out with the next model and we are starting to see their poor accessory sales and marketing come out, even as discontinuing parts like this before the model is discontinued.  For them not to be even able to be purchased with the laptop as you configure on the web is sign that they are only looking at selling the model, not the accesories.  But I digress... Removeable hard drive:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...  The Y400 parts should be the same as the Y500 parts for the ultrabay, but I have not tried them.Graphics:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... Optical:http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... There is also a fan that is suppose to be available for both models but neither are showing anywhere on the web. When I called a couple weeks ago and asked for some of them I was told some of them were discontinued but others would be coming back online soon.  So your guess is as good as mine.

Hello: Since I upgraded to Windows 10 on my IdeaPad Y500 my wifi is intermittant and stops working on sleep.

The network icon in the lower right corner  of the desktop has a red x next to it indicating no network connection. My home wifi network is not listed in the Network Settings list even when the laptop's wifi card is connecting to the router.  The wifi loses connection intermittantly on sleep, it works again once I restart the machine but loses the connection when it goes back to sleep. The LAN connection has also stopped working intermmitantly as well as the sound card.

I have updated to the latest version of Windows 10 (including the kb3093266 update) pushed out in the last month by Microsoft.
I have checked and rechecked the device drivers for wifi and LAN network adapters. The drivers are up to date with the latest. The wifi adapter is an Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230.
There are no network connections listed in the "Network Settings" list including my own router and the many other routers in my apartment building. The LAN connection didn't show up either.
The LAN adapter also stopped working the last I checked.
The sound card stopped working as well but comes back intermittantly.

What should I do? This problem is really annoying. The wifi connection is lost constantly and only works on restart. This happened after the Windows 10 upgrade in July. It only worked fine with Windows 8 and the Windows 10 Inside... Read more

Question: Grinding noise?

Hello. I've been hearing a grinding noise for sometime on start-up on my PC. Occasionally, the PC will pretty much hang at the windows XP logo. When this occurs i just hold in on the power button and go through the boot process without any problems. However, the grinding noise that comes at the start is very loud and doesn't sound healthy at all. I've opened the case and there's no cords in the way of the fans. What could the noise be? Should i have concern? My computer runs fine after the noisy few seconds into the boot but becomes normal after it passes the windows XP logo.

Answer:Grinding noise?

You wouldn't be able to see anything. The grinding noise occurs when the ball bearings go ( at one point the balls start showing wear and don't run "round" anymore, causing the fanblades to tumble.)
Simple solution: you need a new fan. In cases of emergency (like you can't get your hands on a new fan anytime soon) there is a way to prolong the life of the fan a little bit. You get some graphite powder from your automotive supplier, peel back the fan label and carefully put a little bit onto the center of the fan.
I really mean CAREFUL the stuff is worse on cloth than laser toner
Make sure to put the label back on and don't use any form of oil..it will only cause a mess.

Hello, I have recently heard what sounds like a grounding noise coming from my computer. I usually only notice it when the computer is searching for something (say a Google search), and I seem to especially notice it while searching on e-Bay. Once the site or page is found, it then stops making that sound. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is there anything I can do to stop it, or repair it? Does this mean the hard drive is about to crash? I have a Dell Computer, and Windows XP system. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Grinding Noise

Just to be on the safe side do a back up if you havent done.Open the case and try to isolate the noise.

Hello, Im getting a nasty noise from my pc at start up, never on restart. Ive had the cover off and tested the PSU but its fine ,also replaced fan on heatsink, it made no difference. Its definitley coming from the heatsink or CPU, very odd. Luckily I have a new motherboard bundle waiting for Xmas! Everything backed up. Cheers.

Answer:Grinding noise From CPU?

Stop each fan in the system one at a time. Use something like a coffee stir stick to hold the fan blades. Insert the stick before you pw ON not after.

Question: Grinding Noise

I have an Everex Explora, AMD Athlon computer and at the start up and when I am searching for info it makes a grinding noise while it is loading the information. Also twice last week after typing and searching for what I wanted I heard a loud grinding noise. Not knowing anything about computers I have no idea what is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Grinding Noise

Hi lag
Grinding noises aren't good. It sounds like you hard drive is going. I would back up your important data NOW. You can run a scandisk (surface scan) and defrag to help test out the hard drive. Many manufacturers of hard drive also have utilities on their web sites you can run to test out the drive. Is your system under warranty? Many hard drives come with a three year warranty.

Hi, can any one advise me? I have been getting a grinding noise from my PC roughly monthly since I obtained it in Nov. 2004, I think it may be when I push it a little??could this be the hard drive protesting ? it`s a pentium 4 3000ghz, asrobs.

Answer:GRINDING noise from PC

Some hard drives can get noisy when there is a lot of disc activity.......I have an IBM Deskstar 80GB drive which sounds a bit like a boiling kettle when working hard.It has done for the 3 years since I got it.Also some fans will speed up when temperatures rise and can become very loud.If this noise is infrequent, only happens when you are working the pc hard and most importantly not getting worse over time then I would be inclined to ignore it.If it's annoying you then you will need to track down the culprit and consider replacing it with a new quieter version.

Question: Grinding Noise

Hey guys, I logged on this morning to my pc and started to play a game and all of a sudden every few minutes the game would just crash for 10 seconds or so then be fine. When the crash happened i couldn't press Ctrl+Alt+Del so i know it wasn't the actual game itself crashing or losing connection etc.

So then i decided to take off my headset and try see if there was any strange noises and there was a really weird grinding noise for 2-3 seconds.. then game pc crashes then 10 seconds later everything is perfectly fine.

Anybody had this issue or know any solutions? If you need any additional information don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks in advance, Pompey.

Answer:Grinding Noise

Oh my god, not long after writing this thread... Now my PC just turned itself off without any warning, bleeps or grinding noises. Didn't even reboot, just switched itself off.

When i boot up my PC, i don't get no errors, it boots up as quick as it ever has.

I plan to get one Fan Ultrabay but I heard someone said it wouldn't make any difference on reducing the laptop heat....  Did anyone here actually try the Fan Ultrabay for y400/y500 laptop and give me some advice "should I buy it for my laptop?" does it help cooling my laptop? especially for gaming and video rendering.... Recently, the CPU just gets up to 70-78*C when I play games and video rendering... (That is with Cooling pad) I just don't want to waste $30....

Answer:Fan Ultrabay for Y400 / Y500...

I personally bought one, it is absolutely worthless, my y400 actually runs cooler with the drive bay empty, the fan is low speed only, and it was only blowing out cold air for me, it seemed like it was stealing the cold air that the other fan would use to cool the cpu side of the laptop. I think I am just going to gut the fan portion out of it and just leave it in their empty just kind of like an intake vent, it will save a bit of weight over the optical drive, or my other thought was maybe trying to flip the fan inside the housing, so it sucks air in instead of blowing it out. I haven't done either yet because I've just been frustrated with wasting the money

Does Lenovo not sell Blu Ray Ultrabay drives for the Ideapad Y500? I've only found two links to potential products: http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-lenovo-ideapad-y500-sata-bd-rre-blu-ray-drive-75538 http://www.mydvddrives.com/replacement-for-lenovo-ideapad-y500-sata-bd-rom-blu-ray-combo-drive-75397 I'm particularly wary of these options because of the discrepancies between the two drives. Why different prices? And why does the price on google not match the price on the website. Does anyone even have the part number for the Blu Ray drive?

Answer:Where to get Blu Ray Ultrabay Drive for Y500?

Thanks for posting these links, I've been looking everywhere to buy the blu ray ultra bay for my Y500. The difference between the two links is that one read/writes blu ray and the other just reads blu ray. I would just get the one that reads blu ray unless you plan to burn blu ray dvds.

Or am I doing something wrong here. I've tried holding the laptop up and bottom down while holding the switch but nothing will come out.

Did you remove the screw? It is probably under the cover which contains the hard drive/memory.

I have just received my new Y500, but I would like to get an Ultrabay for a second HDD, actually moving the original disk to the Ultrabay and replacing the original with a SSD. I cannot find what might fit the new Y500 model. Any help would be great.

Answer:Y500 Ultrabay Options HDD

I just ordered the doorbuster deal Y500, the advertising on this model as well as the gallery shows the ultrabay in place.  Ha!  I'll wait until it arrives to see but when asking the "chat" person I got an unintelligible response, something like "after you place order" - what??? Anyway I certainly expect it to come with the ultrabay as depicted.  If so it should be a simple thing to put the TB HDD where the DVD is and install a 256GB SSD in it's place to lay down Linux (or whatever you use).  That should make it a pretty decent laptop for all but intense users especially with the 1920x1080 screen. It is a bit disconcerting that no mention is made of ultrabay options to order direct - poor marketing and poor release tactics, hope the machine is better.  Overall the tech specs are weakly given, like, is it really SATA II or SATA III etc.  Probably not even SATA III, can't get that answer either.  Come on Lenovo, buyers want to know what it is they are buying!  This will be my third Lenovo, first was X61 tablet (still works with LInux), ideaPad U160 (great with Mint) and now this Y500.  Good stuff but.....

My w550s laptop fan is making a loud grinding noise whenever I turn it on.  I've tried cleaning and then replacing the fan but the issue persists anyway. Any tips on how to resolve the issue would be greatly appreciated. I've attached the sound for reference. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4rjnLAA0hh8c0NBVWphbVlUMzQ/view?usp=drivesdk (it sounds like a bearing is loose but I'm not quite sure)

Answer:W550s fan grinding noise

Welcome shadowsonmywall1. Is your CPU and GPU running hot when the laptop fan is making a loud grinding noise?2. Did you remove the thermal paste before replacing with a new fan?3. Have you tighten all other screws on the laptop fan?
4. Use grease to oil the bearing of the fan.

Hello. Currently i Have in my PC:Q6600 2.4 ghz8800gts 312 DDR32gb of ram500gb WD sata HDDSound Blaster Audigy500watt PSUAlright so my computer has up and decided that it hates me. For about three months it worked without any major issues. I noticed some absurd artifacting with my GPU but decided i'd just replace it eventually. My problem is that recently my computer has gone nutty. Whenever I decide to do anything (open photoshop, install programs, ect) it starts to give me laggy sound. Windows itself takes about 5 minutes to get past that initial loading screen and then 1 or 2 minutes to actually load my user. Under a normal circumstance I would just guess CPU but it's stranger. Once photoshop opens it gives a GPU error, whatever, I get it, it's broken. Yet it works fine, no lag, nothing. I render videos, and nothing. I open fallout 3 and it lags until it gets to the menu and the sound is fine for the rest of the game. It seems to only lag on loading screens. About an hour ago I started hearing loud grinding noises from inside my case. All of this leads me to believe it may be my HDD. It seems that the sound skips any time the HDD is accessed but I'm not sure. So I wanted to get a second opinion.I ran a CPU stress test and it never got above 60C at 100% for 3 hours. I ran a ram test for 20 minutes with 0 errors. My GPU gets up to 72C with artifacting almost nonstop In games there are specific models that seem to make the oddest thing ever occur. Giant tr... Answer:strange grinding noise

Two problems at the same time:1) Hard drive is going bad.  If the grinding noise is coming from the hard drive, that's means it's about to crap out on you.  Back up your data as soon as you can 'cause you may not get another chance...2) Video card.  99% of the time artifacts on the screen mean a video card problem.  The other 1% of the time it's drivers.  So...you have your marching orders.  Replace both the hard drive AND the video card.

I have an older laptop that we use infrequently here in the office, and it's making a pretty loud grinding noise. I looked into this a bit on-line, and everyone seems to agree that this probably means the hard drive is going. I just want to confirm a few things with an expert before I proceed:

1) Is there anything I should try to get rid of the grinding noise before I just pack it in and trash this laptop?

2) Although the laptop is older, I really don't want to trash it. Does it make sense to buy a new hard drive?

3) If I do buy a new hard drive, is that the kind of thing that I can install myself, without too much experience? Can you guys help me through it?

4) Do you have any suggestions on where I should go for the drive and what I should get? (It's a Dell Notebook)

Any assistance is very much appreciated!

What operating system is it using? W98? W98SE, ME, XP or what? What make and model of laptop? Beware there may be limitations on the capacity of the hard drive that the OS/BIOS will accept. Can you get a copy of the manual, either from the office, or via the net, or makers website? Also there may be limits on the anount of RAM that can be installed if you want to upgrade. let us know and someone here can probably help.

When I boot up my y470, the fan makes a grinding noise for about 3 seconds,  then is perfectly normal. I think there's something wrong with my fan's bearings, even though it's only 2 weeks old (terrible manufacturing quality apparently). One of my HP laptops, HP Pavilion dv9650us, went off warranty about two months ago. I was using the machine to help fix another computer's problem when I noticed that its dvd-drive is making loud grinding noises and is slowing down the computer whenever I would access the drive. I suspect that the drive is about to die.

I am not sure how long the drive has been doing this since the laptop is being used primarily by another family member.

I purchased an extended warranty through Office Depot, but that family member cannot afford for that computer to be sent off for an unknown amount of time so I am actively considering replacing the drive myself.

I am looking at drives on amazon.com and unsure if a 'universal laptop slimline drive' will fit. Are the drives fairly universal between manufactorers? The current drive is an HD-DVD drive so I was hoping to upgrade to a blu-ray drive. Is it possible?

FYI: These kind of internal laptop dvd drives are not available from newegg or even frys. I'd rather not buy directly through hp.

Answer:dvd drive grinding noise

www.span.com Found a few laptop BD-Roms there. Panasonic makes the UJ-220 for laptops as well. They are a bit pricey. I would google something like 'Notebook Internal Blu-Ray' and see what pops up for you.

Title says it all. I am not very familiar with Computers, but I know my stuff.

I have an ASUS P5Q-E Motherboard, and an Intel Q9950 processor. I also have the Antec Twelve Hundred gaming case, with a Zalman cooler on top of all that.

I smack the side of the behind the cover, and sometimes it will go away, but that's horrible for the machine. It is not the cooler, because I have tried moving it while the PC was running, and no problem. I smack the top of the fan on the top, the muffles, and comes back. It is not the Hardrive, or any External fans, because the noise is coming from the top, back right corner of the PC. I turn the speed of the fan on the top down, there is no change of sound, and there are no wires interfering with the fans.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well the thread says it all. I have a DELL PC a year or 2 old, and the CD ROM is starting to make this grinding like noise, for a split second only, when a CD spins down in the drive.

Does this mean the CD ROM drive is about to go? How much longer do you think it will live?

Should I start using the DVD drive to play CDs and games? Will this hurt the DVD drive?

Well that about wraps it up I think.

Answer:CD ROM and grinding noise when cd spins down

take the cd rom drive out of the pc and shake it. If you hear anything bouncing around inside then something might possibly be broken. As for your dvd drive, no playing cds and games won't hurt it. In fact I would recommend using it. Besides you can get a new dvd burner for like thirty bucks now so if it does break, who cares, they're cheap!

Hi all,

My laptop fan is making some pretty weird noises and some of them sound pretty bad; when the laptop turns off the fan kind of clunkclunkclunks to a stop and I'm worried that the fan might not be spinning fast enough to cool the laptop. I've looked at how to replace the fan and it involves taking pretty much the entire laptop apart, is there anything else I could/should be looking at, trying to do, etc, before I go all in? The only thing I can think of would be to get a can of compressed air and try to give it a blast and maybe dislodge something; I just thought it would be worth asking before going through the trouble of taking the laptop apart plus the expense of buying a new fan. My laptop is an HP pavillion dv7.

Thanks a bunch for any help,
J

Answer:Laptop fan grinding noise?

It might be an idea to get a program such as Speccy (Google it) and check the temps on your CPU, if the CPU is too hot, i would see if you could get access to the fan, clean and clean it out with a can of compressed air (Or a vacuum but that may damage components, i wouldn't recommend it but i do it personally) and if that doesn't help take the fan off and use an alcohol wipe to clean off the grey compound on it and replace it with some fresh thermal compound (There are plenty of youtube videos on how to do this).

Hi,
Our NEC Superscript 870 printer works ok for one or two pages at a time: anymore than that and it begins to make a grinding noise and then a paper jam. The grinding noise seems to be coming from the right hand side, perhaps from the gears under the brass clips that are under the toner cartridge. The teeth that are visible seem normal. Suggestions?

i had my sony viao for almost 2-yrs and i'm starting to hear a grinding noise from my hd. i initially noticed it when i turned it on. it made this loud grinding noise for over 10-mins then it disappear (pc still made typical very noise) and after 3 days the hd made the same noise (again for ~10-mins), but not as loud when i turned it on, still loud enough to notice and the grinding noise wasn't consistent either, a few time it was like grinding down then speeding up again
should i start looking at new hd, will i be able to rescue my files if my hd just decides to stop working or decides to boot up
i normally keep my pc on for 5-days and i know i'm not the only one so i don't think that's the reason
also most night, i keep my pc busy all night long encoding movies for over 10-hrs, can that be the cause

Answer:y510p/y500 Ultrabay battery?

Hi reconrey

Thanks for posting!

I think it is not possible since the Ultrabay has a Sata interface that communicates through the board. So it can only interpret Sata devices like ODD, GPU or power up a fan.

My suggestion is to install a battery monitor like Batterymon.
with that you'll see "real time" your discharge rate, then you can uninstall or disable some background apps and services during startup.

Lowering Discharge rate can give you more battery life.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

So after about a month of waiting for it to come back in stock, it's finally back (although with a 5 week backorder wait time). It's $230, but I think that seems a little steep considering that I'll have to purchase a 170W power adapter as well for the SLI to work. Is this the actual price of the ultrabay? Or can I wait for Lenovo to drop the price later? Are there any 3rd party sellers that sell this as well? Thanks.

hello , I cant find any y510p gt750 Ultrabay , but i managed to find a y500 one , will it work for me? or not? thanks.

Answer:Can y510p use the ultrabay y500 gt750m?

Nope, but not because it is for a y500, but because they all don't work (unless it is from a working SLI laptop).

Hello and good day all, I have a question regarding the Lenovo Y500 GT750M Ultrabay which should be sold seperately from the laptop, i bought the single card version of the Y500. I live in The Netherlands and was looking into buying a second GT750M with the ultrabay, which is a great marketing thing, but it is nowhere to be found, which is quite frustrating really. Do you guys have any options on purchasing this ultrabay for this specific laptop?

My question here is, the lenovo y500 can have a sli of gt650m and  gt750m? or this laptop no support this type of sli?. Sorry, My english is bad xD.

Answer:lenovo y500 ultrabay gt 750m possible?

Get the GT 750M + 170 Watts AC adapter. The 750M with good drivers should be as fast or faster than the GTX 660M. Some time later, Lenovo will release the GT 750M ultrabay for SLI configuration.

Hi, I am interesting in buying a removable graphics card for my laptop Y500 but I am living in the UK,so does anyone know when exactly it will be released in the UK?I've tried to use the USA site to order it online but my address here is invalid. Thanks.

Answer:Lenovo Y500 Ultrabay options

I'm in the exact same position. I live in London and bought this laptop being advertised with the ability to upgrade to sli graphics. I feel that UK customer service is terrible compared to lenovo USA and even Canada. Can someone, preferably a lenovo rep, please tell us when ANY of the ultrabay options will be available in the UK?Cheers

Hey everyoneI have searched every where I could and cannot find an answer to this. I just ordered a refurbished y500 with a single 650m. I want to sli it with another 650m but CANNOT find anywhere to buy these. Does any one know? It looks like Lenovo replaced the 650m with the 750m ultra bay card on their site. From what I have gathered, they are NOT compatible. You cannot sli a 650m integrated chip with a 750m ultra bay card.Does anyone know where I can get this?!?!?!?! I wanst.

Hello, I recently bought a 256gb SSD and a caddy for the ultrabay slot.  I was wondering should I place the Hybrid drive and place the SSD into the spot it once took? I plan on moving windows to the SSD and frequently used programs/games. I just want to make sure which method is safer. I'm wondering because I might reset my computer since it refuses to download needed updates or it says it has the update but, windows won't reconize it, to upgrade to windows 8.1 then windows 10.

Guys help me im newbie lorhh..im using y510p single gpu and now im already buy ultrabay gt750m y500 because the seller tell me it same as y510p but now when im plug it into my laptop..the sli at nvidia control panel doesnt show upbeside that, at device manager also showed Intel Hd 4600 and Nvidia Geforce Gt 750M, means that the external one not detecting rite..when i go to see the seller it tell me maybe bios problem haha help me guys..I think the external gt750m work correctly because i can feel it fan ermhhh anyone experience like me???

Answer:Can y510p use the ultrabay y500 gt750m?

Hi Abk92,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I have not tested this but
SLI Graphics don't really show under device manager.
Try running "dxdiag" and see if the Total Display memory will add up.

The only reason im thinking that it won't work is that It may have FRU model Restrictions. Thus you can only use a y500 SLI Tray to Y500 itself..
But as I have said. I haven't tried this yet.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Hello friends, I'm gonna ask you, if I can upgrade Lenovo y500 SLI 650M in ultrabay to the GTX 870M or something like that ... you can see some upgrade kits on ebay (like for Alienware etc.). If I can, do you think 650M is fast enough for dedicated PhysX card? Would be PSU enough  to power the system? What do you think about overheating? Is it good idea? Can card from UltraBay be the main? Here is a link to the card:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/CLEVO-P15xSM-P17xSM-VGA-Upgrade-Kit-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-870M-6GB-DDR5-MXM-3-0... Cheers! Vratislav Rusz

Answer:Lenovo y500 ultrabay gtx 870m

I don't think there is anything like this for the ultrabay because the laptop would not know how to output the video from just the ultrabay (there is no direct video out from the ultrabay). Also, the bios won't let you boot with a different card in the ultrabay (at least without hacking the bios). The card you linked to is a MXM card which replaces the internal video card of the laptop, the internal video card of the y510p is not MXM either so it cannot be swapped out for something like this.

So I am currently in the process of buying a y500 with a GT 750m graphics card and am wondering if down the line I can buy a 750m sli ultrabay, if the 750m will work with an sli and if all Lenovo laptops have this Ultrabay options unless specified ?

Answer:Lenovo y500 GT 750m Ultrabay

The y500's ultrabay is no longer manufactuered due to some error in part numbers...so they pulled it. There was no official statement from lenovo on if it is coming back however it is rumered that the y510p's gt750m Ultrabay works in the y500. The y400's ultrabay is still avaliable but will only work with the y400. The ultrabay accessories are to only be used on the machine it was manufactuered for however the y410p and y510p have the same setup as the y400 and y500 so there is no reason why they shouldn't work on the their predecessors.  I own the y500 and don't have the SLI ultrabay gt750m because it got pulled before I bought it but I will try to buy a y510p's ultrabay and test it in my y500 once it hits the market.  Edit: There are few systems that have the ultrabay capability. The ultrabay systems for the Y Series will only work in their intended machine.

Hello,

Ok, I'm not sure if I came to the right place for this problem but I'm looking for as much help as I can.

This has been happening for awhile now but everyday when I first startup the computer it makes this grinding noise that lasts for about two minutes then it goes away and is fine for the rest of the day when I use it. At first I thought it was dust so I took it out and cleaned it up a bit with a can of compressed air. After trying that, the noise is still there. I don't think it's my hard drive since I use a SSD. I haven't gotten a chance to open the case and carefully listen where the noise is coming from but one thing I do know is when the noise is happening and I thump the case with my hand a few times it seems like one of the fans inside makes this lower power noise thing and then you can hear it slowly coming back up to normal speed. Keep in mind this only happens if I thump or hit the case with my hand. I'm planning on opening the case soon and see what is causing the noise but I'd like an idea if you guys know if what could be causing the noise so I know what to pay attention to. And what can I use so I can hear better where the noise is coming from?

Answer:PC making grinding noise on startup, need help!

use a straw to your hear and move it around the components to try and isolate the cause

probably a fan

the last thing you want to do is thump the case with your hand if want the computer to keep running

Hi guys (and gals). I posted here a while back and tried to get help with my computer, which kept freezing. The guys who helped me tried every single thing they could think of to try and fix my problem, but to no avail. The only thing the problem could be was a hardware problem, and paying for a new motherboard for a four year old system would have been a waste of money. Nevertheless, I appreciated the help and kindness the forums gave while I troubleshooted my computer. That's why I'm coming here again asking for help. Hopefully this time there will be a happy ending.

In June, with my own saved money, I purchased a new computer. The specs are here:

-ASUS A8V-E Deluxe Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
-CHAINTECH SE6600G Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500ASBOX - Retail
-CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS1GB400C3 - Retail
-Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JD 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
-Windows XP with Service Pack 2

I put everything together and initially it all worked, however recently the fan which is attached to the heatsink has begun making a very distinct grinding noise upon booting my computer. Waiting until Windows boots seems to sometimes fix the problem, and taking off the case to press against the heatsink seemed to stop it for a small period, however as of two... Read more

Answer:Heatsink fan making grinding noise, help!

Is this post in another thread of any use to you? It may be that the fan is not working correctly in terms of cooling the part (CPU or chipset - not sure which?) and the part is overheating causing the problems. Perhaps you need to reseat or replace the fan and/or heatsink?

Recently when holding the laptop in a certain way a grinding noise ensues from the device followed by a pulse like grinding. Hibernating the laptop and then reopening solves this until pressure is applied to an unspecified part of it after which the noise returns.

Hello
I just installed on windows 2000 on a Gateway Solo 9300 laptop
20GB HD
128 RAM

I deleted windows 98, reformatted, and installed Windows 2000 and Office 2000
I applied all the latest patches for IE, W2K, and Office
After testing here at my home I had no probs
Something happened from putting it in a laptop bag o delivering it to my friend

When she powers it up there is a grinding noise....I can hear it over the phone
and
I can also hear the harddrive seeking...clicking sound...which I never heard the whole time I had it
The sound comes from the side with the CDROM and FLoppy....It might be the floppy initializing on startup?????

I recently bought a new PC. A Dell Ispiron 560 (3.2 ghz, 4gb memory, etc.). I don't want to get big into gaming on it I just wanted a better video card than the crappy one that came with it, so I bought a HIS HD 4670 IceQ 1gb ($60). Because of that I had to upgrade the PSU from a stock 150w to a OCZ Fata1ity 550w power supply. I uninstalled the previous video drivers by going into Device Manager and deleting them. I also used Driver Cleaner Pro. Then I installed and updated the driver for the HIS 4670. Now my computer seems to have minor mouse lag and the cursor plays catch up to where I want it to go. Also while playing some minor games (ex. A.V.A.,Genesis AD, TheHunter, Vindictus) it lags horribly and makes a grinding sound which comes through the speakers, it does this not only in a game but I can be surfing the web and listing to itunes and it will just spazz out making the grinding sound. On a cold boot/start in the morning I hear this griding sound for a bit then it goes away. I took the cover off my pc, cleaned everything I could, started again and grinding noise was still there, then went away after a bit. The noise sounds like it is coming from my cpu fan. To me, it sounds like the fan has a wron bearing. I have been trying to find a replacement, but no luck, and I don't know the specs for the fan, so i can't buy an aftermarket fan.I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy a replacement or maybe a better aftermarket fan that would work. PC: Acer ATC-105-UR11

I posted a message here a couple of weeks ago that the fan was making a loud noise when the system boots. Now it is making the same noise at other times, but not quite as loud. It seems to be getting worse. Someone suggested it is a fan bearing. I would rather not make a warranty claim for this if it is simple to fix.   Would this be a simple fix for someone not experience working with hardware? Do I risk my working on the machine myself.

Athlon 64 3700+
2x512 corsair value ram
x1800xt 256mb
Asus A8N5x Mobo

I believe that one of the fans is making a strange noise, but I can't really be sure which one. Whenever i go into a game full screen, the noise gets even louder. Even when I am in Windows, when I move the mouse around and click things the fan grinds more, but then grinds less. Anyone familiar with this? Any suggestions?

Disconnect any case fans. then you should be able to isolate wheter it is one of them. the CPU or the Video card fan.

Hi,
Recently a grinding noise can be heard when I turn on my PC, but not always. So far it has happened twice, the first time I looked inside my PC but found nothing, and the second time it stop after about 5 minutes once the computer had been turned on. I have literally no idea what it is as nothing is touch any of the fans and both HDD's in my build feel fine when I rest my hand on them.
I've made a video of the noise, for which the link is below. You may have to turn your volume up slightly to hear it, but it is much louder in reality.

Any help will be appreciated,

I take it that it's your graphics card, sounds like the fan could do with a looking at and probably a good clean to clear the dust build up etc.

@NIKIKUKO Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! This may simply be the sound that the newer drives make -- given that the laptops are thinner than the old ones and more easily conduct the drive sound. You paid for free HP Tech Support as part of the warranty coverage, so you might as well make use of it.While this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about troubleshooting and repairing your machine remotely. They should be able to tell you if the sound is "normal" or if it indicates a problem with the drive. If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while! If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836Good Luck
