How do i disable the touchpad? it is quite irritating when im typing or playing games

Preferred Solution: Y580 Cannot disable touchpad

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This may sound like an odd request, but is there a way to disable the touchpad buttons from moving the mouse, but still have them work when they're pressed? Here's what happens...I'm using the touchpad and I hit the left button and it moves my mouse pointer a little.  But I don't want it to move. I just want to press the button without my touching it causing the pointer to move a little. It really screws with some things I do.

Is there any solution to this? If not, can I buy a completely different touchpad?

Thanks

In Windows 8 the option is called SmartSense. Disabling this worked for me.

Press Win+W to bring up Settings Search
Type "synaptic"
Double Click "SmartSense"
Slide the Slider all the way to "Off"
Click "Close" and then "OK"

This will Disable the Anti-Palm detection which prevents simultaneous Keyboard and Mouse use. I recommend you re-enable this feature when you're not gaming as otherwise you risk problems while typing.

I'm so frustrated I'm about to throw the laptop into the wall. I keep disabling the touchpad tapping from the mouse ultranav settings on this t430u but it doesn't get disabled. As I keep working, the mouse keeps getting tapped and destroying everything and slowing me down.  Even tried disabling the touchpad altogether but it keeps on working.  Whats wrong? What can I do to reverse this ? I'm on windows 8 pro of course

Answer:Can't disable the tapping on the touchpad or even the touchpad itself on the T430u?

What I do is install ThinkPad touchpad driver and uninstall thinkpad touchpad utility.  You may need to go to an older version of the driver, as Lenovo obviously doesn't bother with regression testing when releasing updated drivers.

Hey all. Running Windows 7 64 bit on a Lenovo Y580. Unfortunately, the touchpad seems to be pretty bad. I've tried everything including most solutions here ( with the power, unplugging and test and such ) and I'm not sure what to do. The touchpad basically trails off when you're trying to get around, and just loses sensivitiy. I've tried reinstalling drivers, updating drivers, all to no avail. I even tried to change the sensitivity. It's just a lousy touchpad. I also have all the correct drivers for Windows 7. I am running Premium Home. It makes doing tasks on the computer, well, sucky. Is there a BIOS fix for this or do I have to send it in for repair? I'd rather not to. I JUST bought the thing a few days ago. I like Lenovos but it is cutting into my productivity on some projects. I've owned Y560 and the touchpad was awesome. I am aware they are a single touch area now ( rather than the two individual left and rights ) but they should still be working properly. Is there any universal fix for this or do I just have a bad touchpad? Thanks in advance folks. =)

Answer:Y580 Touchpad issues. Help meh.

hi Natw,

To verify if it's the physical touchpad itself or the drivers, try to:

1. Update the latest drivers from the Synaptics website and reconfigure the sensitivity.
2. If the touchpad movement is still not smooth, try to uninstall the Synaptics driver from the Control Panel and uninstall / delete the mouse pointing device driver under Device Manager and reboot. This will use the microsoft driver.

If the above steps doesn't work, it's probably the touchpad hardware itself is the issue. You can use a cheap wireless or corded USB mouse for the meantime until you have time to send the unit in for warranty service (they'll probably replace the whole touchpad to correct the issue)..

Cheers.

My y580 is only about a month old and the touchpad has stopped working. (and NO, it is not Fn-F6.) For a day or so it would work while the USB mouse was plugged in, but stop working when I unplugged the mouse. Then it would only work if I restarted the computer. And now it just doesn't work at all regardless if the mouse is plugged in or not, or if I restart the computer. I've even taken the battery out of the computer to try to get a clean start. I followed the advise in other posts. I downloaded the driver from lenovo, which ran but then basically told me to download the driver from synaptic. the synaptic driver told me a newer driver was already installed and to unistall the other drivers first, so I did that. After downloading and installing the drivers from Lenovo and from Synaptic multiple times I have had to uninstall the synaptic drivers, a gesture program from Synaptic (I forget what it was called) and Intelligent Touchpad. EVen after doing all that, when I try to install the Lenovo drivers (which are supposedly more up to date than the synaptic site) I still get nothing. It runs the installer, but when I restart, nothing has changed. In the Device Manager, I can't even find the touchpad anywhere as a detected device, and I can't find any instructions on how to make Windows 7 detect and install the touchpad. I pushed the one touch recovery button but the options there look pretty scary. I've spent the last month building up the collection of software that I... Read more

Answer:y580 touchpad not working

hi thecrowdog,
thanks for posting and welcome to the commmunity. I have the Y580 myself and I must admit that've haven't experience what you have with the touchpad. Though it does seem a bit weird that it's happening to you.

May I know when did this issues start to happen? Was there anything in particular that you'd installed prior to this happening and does this issue happen when on Batter or AC only?

My suggestion at this point is to uninstal all the touchpad drivers and firstly to update the BIOS. The download link can be found below.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS029084

Once you've updated the BIOS and restarted your machine again, check for the changes again. Then install the touchpad drivers again and check for the changes from there. To download the touch pad drivers, click on the link below.

Hi 1) I just bought the Y580 online. The trackpad is terrible. - How do I make the right-side and bottom touch scrolling to work ? just like a normal laptop ?? - I changed the sensitivity settings and inspite of that the motion of the cursor is not uniform. When the right side of my finger is contact with it, the cursor stops moving a little and it is okay with the center of my finger.Do any of you experience this? If not, I need to get this looked into. I don't think the problem is with the software, it's just the material with which the trackpad is made, does not have a right coefficient of friction. - The two finger scrolling does not start. When I do the two finger scroll, the cursor change is seen almost 10 seconds later and even after that, it is almost impossible to scroll through my pages. Is that the case for everyone?  - The left/right click on the trackpad is noisy 2) Made the mistake a buying a lower resolution screen. How do I return this thing? When I talked to sales they are asking for a 15% "restocking" fee. That is terrible as well. I never should have gone with Lenovo.

Answer:Y580 Trackpad (or Touchpad) Help

- Not sure if there is a right side and bottom touch scrolling, will test it tonight- not uniform? Means if you place your finger on the right side of the touchpad then move to the center compared to the center move to the left, the distance is different?- 2 finger scrolling not tested, will check it tonight- I am not sure how to help you with the touchpad being noisy when clicking. Do note that this is a 1 piece touchpad compared to the conventional touchpad with 2 buttons below which is different. Use double tap on touchpad to do a left click but right click is unavoidable. - low res screen... can check with sales if you can top-up for upgrade?hope this helps.

HiI just got the Y580 few days ago, it's nice beast, very powerful, it came with Windows 8 However, the touchpad is very difficult to handle, the cursor sometimes jumps from 1 place to other or stutters, the click is confusing, you wanna right click and instead it's left click, or you wanna left click, and instead it's a right click.I had many lenovos in the past, the touchpad was always nice and clear. Please let me know if this is a general issue? software issue vs hardware issue. I can't live with this problem forever. Thanks a lot

Answer:Y580 Disappointing Touchpad

Someone somewhere said that one piece touchpads are cool. For some reason, many people listened to this guy. So much so it seems this guy has a high likelihood of being Jesus Christ himself. Why the holy lord would find desirability in something so unholy as these one piece touchpads... I don't know. Perhaps a cruel sense of humor? Maybe the wireless mouse companies donate to feed starving kids in Africa and he is working his magic to take horrible things and make something good come out of it. I don't know. All I know is that these touchpads suck.

I bought a Y580 with windows8. The touchpad's working fine. It does get unresponsive while running a scan.. But I haven't seen the Cursor drifting issue that I'm reading here... So,I guess the pre installed drivers should work properly....If its a software issue,I don't know why Lenovo's taking so much of time to fix it....

Answer:y580 touchpad issue

I too am having a touchpad issue. It becomes very erratic at least twice per day. It clicks and opens things on its own. It can create hazards. I was looking up things in my program files, and the cursor almost deleted things on its own. This is annoying. I have the 3-year in-home warranty and I'm calling for service today. Here's some advice (from an attorney -- moi). First, please fill out the email they send you after a new purchase alerting them to this problem. Second, if you call, and the person claims not to know about the problem, ask for his/her ID Number and Lenovo email address and send a link to this thread. This is very important. It will put them on notice. Third, document your contact. It is best to use email; also make sure you have the ID number of anyone who talks to you from Lenovo. Fourth, finally, take it back to the vendor. If you are within the first year, they should give you a new unit. But if the problem exists in the models, then you will end up with the same thing. Personally, I love this computer; so, I am not returning it. But I will not tolerate them playing dumb about this issue. Don't let them get away with it.

Hello, I just got my Ideapad y580 about a month or two ago and I've had this prolem ever since I've gotten it. At first I was sure that it would pass or somehow go away, but it's not. So when I turn it on sometimes it doesn't register the keyboard about 2/10 of the time, and I would be forced to keep restarting it until it worked. Also the touchpad does not register some of the time as well. Sometimes I would just be browsing o the internet and the touchpad will just die on me. Sometimes I would restart, the keyboard will work but then as soon as I boot up, the touchpad dies. I've already tried uninstalling intelligent touchpad and that synaptics thing but this problem still persists. Got any ideas? Thanks.

I received my laptop November 1st.  After a day or two I noticed that sometimes the touchpad would not be responsive at all, it seems to happen intermittently.  I wanted to see what was happening so I enabled the synaptics icon so it always shows and when I lose the ability to use the touchpad I noticed that it was detecting input but the PalmCheck was filtering it out.  So I tried disabling the PalmCheck just to see if it was really detecting input or what sort of input it was detecting exactly and suddenly the mouse moved very quickly up and down on the vertical axis (no horizontal movement).   I've attempted cleaning the touchpad with one of those lens cleaners (not with a solution--just the cloth).  Reinstalling/Updating drivers.  Adjusting the settings with varied results.  I'll probably just need to call in for support, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas before I tried contacting support.   Thanks in advance,  Ben

Out of nowhere the two finger scrolling feature stopped. I used to be able to place two fingers on the touchpad and move them up and down, and it would scroll the page up or down. This no longer works. Also, when I "lightly tap" on the touchpad, this used to register as a "click" but this no longer works either... any suggestions?

It's not that my touchpad is disabling itself at random moments or even that I can't disable it. For some reason, at times the right click will left click and the left click will right click but most of time, I can't click at all. There are also many instances where my mouse has gone spastic and would click somewhere without my knowing so. More than often, I have to resort to using my external mouse if I want to get anything done. Is there something wrong with my hardware? I just received my laptop a couple of days ago and I've been having consistant problems

Answer:Y580 Having Touchpad Problems

Hi, if all of these problems existed from day one, i would suggest that you call Lenovo support in your area, and see what they advise. Of course if the problem showed up after you installed programs,it would be worthwhile perhaps, to restore to factory settings using One Key Recovery, and see what happens. Make sure to back up your stuff first. though.

Hello. My cousin came over my house today and he needed my mouse, so I let him use it. Afterwards, I started getting bored and wanted to play Minecraft, so I started it up. I looked at my Synaptics Pointing Device Properties in the taskbar and didn't see anything about disabling it. Is there a way? I have to press really hard to get both the both the the left and right click button to actually work.  Gota really squeeze like for a tiny fraction of a second before anything happens.  . What could be? Is it a physical problem I can fix myself? I've gotten by by using that feature that lets you lightly tap anywhere on the touchpad in orde to left click, but right clicking is still a pain in the ass.

if you would like, I could provide you with the information to click down on the trackpad anywhere with two fingers, and it would act as a right click

I'm 11 and using Ubuntu 17.04 Linux on my Lenovo Y580. The problem I'm having seems to effect every operating system I've used on it. The touchpad flips out randomly and sometimes stops working at all. Sometimes it will start to work but only for so long. It's will massively teleport up and down until I start hitting it a little bit, but this is bothering me and hitting it probably makes it worse. Any help would be appreciated. feel free to ask more advanced questions just because I'm 11. I will understand for sure.

The touchpad behaves erratically (mouse pointer goes wild when I put my finger in the touchpad, either in rest or in movement) after a few hours of gaming (if the keyboard lights are off) or after half an hour or so of general use (if the keyboard lights are on). It seems to me that there is some sort of heat-induced short contact going on. Does anybody know how to fix this? I've got a friend to bring me this notebook from the US, but unfortunately this model isn't supported by Lenovo here in Brazil. Now I may need to find a fix for it myself (or resort to workarounds). A lesson learned for my next purchase: be more careful with so-called "worldwide" warranties.

Hi guys, I have owned my Y580 for 10 months now and I love it with one expection - the touchpad itself is fine but the integrated mouse buttons are appalling. The left click often right clicks insteads and occasionally neither button clicks at all. I don't think it's a software issue, more a hardware / design issue - the actual buttons themselves are getting increasingly difficult to click at all (they occasionally get stuck) and I'm worried this will get worse and worse over time. Do any other Y580 owners have similar issues? Is it worth me contacting Lenovo support for them to take a look and possibly repair whatever the issue is?  Cheers,Nik

Answer:Y580 Touchpad Button Issues

hi Nik,

I can't verify the issue that you're having as there's no Y580 unit available here in the lab but these sticky / stucked keys that you're having is most likely a mechanical problem with the Touchpad itself (probably have worn out due to everyday use).

I recommend you contact lenovo on how to go about getting the touchpad looked but you may need to sacrifice a few days to a week to get the unit serviced.

I have windows 8.1 and latest synaptics driver installed from lenovo drivers site. Whenever I install something or windows doing maintenance gestures like two finger scrolling stop working. Also drivers load too slow, after I boot into windows 8.1 and being into desktop they take 2-3 mins to fully enable gestures and stuff.

Hello everyone, Today I finally received my Lenovo Y580, and thought everything was in order until I began using the touchpad. I noticed that the touchpad is extremely jerky when in use, and will jump from one place to another. This will often result in me misclicking and make it almost impossible to use. I even noticed that the left click would sometimes result in a right click. I started browsing some other forums and tried uninstalling the Synaptics touchpad driver, which unfortunately only made things slightly worse. To my disappointment, I can't seem to access the drivers for my laptop on neither the US or GB lenovo websites. It's probably worth noting that the touchpad improves significantly when not connected to the power supply and also that this problem was present before I even installed anything on the computer. If anyone could help me out with this issue, or at the least direct me to the latest touchpad drivers for the Y580, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello there. A few days ago I noticed that i cannot do the right-click with two fingers on touchpad as I used to do till then.Every other multitouch option works perfect as before (scrolling, rotating, enlargeing), but this one. I reinstalled synaptics driver with the one I got with laptop, and other one I found online. Both drivers doesnt solve my problem.Already tried this CLICK, but this stands for another model, and there's no "2FingerTapPluginID" in there for me.Does anybody knows some other way to get it to work again? And more: now i cannot get back to old driver version. In 17.x i cant turn "sliding cursor" on (there's no option), and i CANT get back to 16.x because everytime i reboot pc, it automatically immediately installs 17.x and asks for another reboot. I cant use the pad without my cursor sliding, i got used to it too much. Im rebooting my pc for 2 houts now, swearing on it by the time, can anyone help me PLEASE before i throw it out the window?

I want to disable this turbo because lately my CPU went crazy and it activates boost even in web browser (which makes a lot of noise). I checked BIOS and there was no such option. Help please!

Answer:How to disable turbo boost in Y580?

hi kobriks,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

If you have an Intel i5/i7 CPU, there are a few ways on how to disable Turbo Boost but the quickest ones are the following:
1. If you're using High Performance power plan, open Control Panel (Icon Views) > Power Options and set the Maximum Processor State to 99% (turbo boost triggers if this is set to 100%).
  - Link to picture

2. Use a software utility like ThrottleStop or similar and check "Disable Turbo"

Hi everyone, So I got myself a new laptop, the Y580, today for school and I have no problems except for the pop-up icons that appear whenever I do anything with the volume/brightness or anything else in that sense. I find this highly distracting and I also quite useless since I have standard options in Windows 7 itself to see all these settings. Also the Photo gallery that pop's-up whenever I press the CTRL+SHIFT+T buttons is highly annoying since I use that button combination quite often in Chrome incase I accidently closed a tab or need a recently closed one back. I can't find a option to disable this, and I don't feel like removing anything incase I may remove a important driver or something along those lines, so hopefully someone can help me out here, I'd be very gratefull!  Shadow

The two-finger function seems to be delayed (as in, it will work 10 min after i log in to the computer), or it sometimes does not work at all. To make it work, i would have to go to controlpanel-->mouse. Of course, i have redownloaded the driver around 3 times, which temporarily fixed the problem. Any way to permanently fix this? P.S, sometimes the num-lock/cap-lock animation that appears at the bottom right corner of the screen stop working too (if that helps)

Hello,So i've upgraded my system to W10 on my Y580. The process was mostly painless, but i am very dissatisfied with the touchpad drivers provided by Lenovo (the ones automatically downloaded by Windows Update). They make the touchpad very imprecise, lack features present in W8 and W7 drivers and overally make for a very annoying experience. I constantly end up clicking stuff i wasn't even aiming for, sometimes the pointer doesn't move at all, and sometimes it behaves very erratically. I've since downloaded some drivers meant for different laptop models and they are a bit better when it comes to precision, but some unnecesary pointer movement still occurs. Also I don't know how to disable palmcheck. Is there any hope for improved drivers? It's incredibly annoying to use my computer without a mouse now (and i do that a lot).

Answer:Lenovo Y580 touchpad driver for Windows 10

Hey there, I just upgraded too! I ended up using an older version of the Windows 8.1 touchpad driver. It works perfect after some adjusting, just remember to go into the settings>scrolling> and uncheck "enable reverse scrolling".  You can download #8 at this sitehttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y580-Windows-8-Pro-64bit-Complete-Driver...

I bought my Y580 about a month ago and it has been great. The only problems I've been having with it is with the touchpad. About a week ago the synaptics software on here started to shutdown at random and things like two finger scrolling and swiping from the sides would all stop working. I searched around and downloaded updated software both from synaptic's website and from lenovo driver support. The newest ones from lenovo are the only ones that don't quit at random but now the only thing that doesn't like to work still is the two finger tap to right click. Sometimes it'll work for the first ten min when I first turn the laptop on but then it'll quit. Two finger click sometimes works for right click but not always and two finger tap for right click never works any more. And suggestions would be nice. Thanks.

Just this morning the touchpad stopped working while i was in the middle of using it. I tried a system restore to yesterday (when it was working just fine) and restarting my laptop and no luck. The laptop is fairly new..I got it late November so I don't know why this is happening. I also tried downloading the synaptics driver touchpad driver and during installation i got an error and now it says no synaptics device found. Very very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated, going to stop trying to fix it myself now since i have no idea what im doing.

hi Reversal,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

If the touchpad suddenly stopped working, try to:

1. Turn off the computer and remove the AC adapter and battery.
2. Hold the power button for 30secs and re-insert the AC adapter and battery.
3. Turn the computer ON and press F2 to boot into the BIOS, when you're in, press F9 to reset the settings to factory and press F10 to save and exit BIOS.
4. After booting back to the OS, uninstall the current touchpad driver (requires a reboot), then re-install the Touchpad Driver (requires a reboot).

My problems are very similar to those in this thread, to which I didn't see any resolution. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/y580-touchpad-not-working/m-p/898175/highli...Anyway, I've had my Y580 for...about 12 hours now, and right out of the box the left mouse button isn't working. About 10% of the time, if you press really hard, it will work, but that's not exactly working condition.  I'm guessing this means the palmrest itself needs to be repalced, so I'm wondering how I can go about getting warranty service WITHOUT calling the phone number. Right now I have larangytis and can't talk on the phone. Moreover, there must be some other options already for the deaf/hard at hearing.Anyway, could someone please help me out with this? Also, if possible, I think this kind of information really needs to be put on the support page itself. Again, there are people who will *never* be able to call you guys on the phone. That's a problem that needs to be accomidated!

Answer:Y580 Touchpad / left mouse button not working

Well, this hasn't gotten me anywhere, so I had a friend talk to the warranty department for me on speakerphone. Lenovo is taking care of everything now, but seriously...you NEED an option for people who for some reason can't talk, or are deaf/hard at hearing. I even asked at the end of the call if there was such an option, and the rep said there wasn't. Lenovo already has 24/hr sales reps available via chat...why not have that same technology for the warranty department? Definitley unfair to someone who is permanently hearing impared or such.

I've noticed that the touchpad on my Y580 had been jumpy. So, after some Google searching, I noticed that there was a similar problem that had been reported with the x220 (more details can be found here): http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/90w-UltraSlim-adapter-leads-to-unusable-jumpy-... Owners in the thread above were able to link their jumpy/erratic trackpad issues to the power adapter. So, I decided to see if the adapter was in fact the problem. I unplugged the adapter and simpy worked off the battery, and of course, the jumpy trackpad issue dissapeared. I noticed that the solution for the problem described in the link above was fixed with a firmware update. (see link below) http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-Touchpad-jumpy-response-when-used-with-90... Can we have a similar firmware update for the Y580 since I do not want to have to work off of my battery in order to have a stable, non erratic touchpad?

Answer:Lenovo Y580 - Touchpad jumpy response when used with adapter

So I've noticed that if I put the laptop on my lap, the problem also goes away. But if I place the laptop on a table and just place my finger on the touchpad, the cursor will jump around and be erratic again.

Hey guys, i had the Y580 under the christmas tree and have been having issues with the touchpad since. It appears that if i make a downwards swipe from the upper 25% there is no reaction from the cursor. Then again if i move my finger horizontally in this segment the movement is totally fine. I doublechecked, switched and re-installed the drivers, but i didn't succeed. I managed to get rid of the problem once, choosing the PS/2-mouse driver but ended up losing the ability of using gestures (like 2 finger scrolling). Anyways, this is not an option as i definitely want to use gestures. The touchpad is working fine, i just think the driver misinterprets the scrolling.Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Y580 Touchpad - upper sector not working properly (?)

idk it seems that the trackpads on these laptops devices aren't very good. Mine slows down and drags occasionally.  Also, the trackpad gestures are intermittent.  I'm hoping that re-installing the drivers helps.

Hi Guys,  I have strange problem with touchpad on my Ideapad Y580. I've bought my y580 about one month ago and since beginning it goes like this:1. I had to install system (Win8) and drivers (downloaded from lenovo support site)2. Everything works fine until I turn off laptop (sleep, hibernate, whatever).3. When I turn on the laptop, touchpad is either not working at all (in device manager I can see code 24) or it works for a 2-3 minutes and then stops working (no error codes in Device manager). 4. If I uninstall all touchpad drivers and restart laptop there are two kinds of situations:a) Windows recognizes touchpad as PS/2 mouse and it is working fine until .... go to 2)b) Windows recognizes touchpad as PS/2 mouse but it is not working (again code 24). In this situation I can uninstall this 'ps/2 mouse' and restart. Now we can go to 4a. I've tried to look for solution over interenet (lenovo forum, win8 forum). There are some solutions for some issues with the synaptics touchpad but none of them works in my case. I have the latest BIOS, I've tried drivers for lenovo site as well as for synaptics site. Installing/uninstalling lenovo energy management. I've tried working with or without battery. I've tried dissabling some gestures in touchpad options. The problem still exists.   Does anyone have simillar problems?

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

Hello, I recently purchased a Y580 with Windows 8, and several of the Synaptics gestures do not work. I tried with both the latest Lenovo drivers & the generic Synaptics drivers and several features seem not to work. 4-finger actions do not work, the single finger edge swipes are all inoperable, except or the right edge gestures which brings up the charms menu. I did do a clean install on my SSD, perhaps there is an application that I need for the 4-finger swipes and the single finger edge swipes to work, but I'm unaware of what that is. Any help/guidance is very much appreciated.

Ok.. So.. I am hoping that someone reads this and has the magical answer for me... When using the built in touchpad, some times the mouse cursor fails to move when I attempt to use it...  Interestingly (and frustratingly), the mouse is detecting 'input'.. I have adjusted my mouse settings to keep the taskbar indicator shown all of the time... When the mouse fails to move on command, I can see via the indicator that the software is detecting the pressure of my finger (as it shows a green circle in the touchpad icon)...  Also, I can reproduce the problem on command - if I just gently place my finger on the touchpad and attempt to move the cursor down, I can get it to freeze 1 in 3 times at will...  I have attempted driver uninstall and reinstall as well as attempting to use the generic factory driver to no avail... I have also messed with the settings a great deal to try and correct this behavior as I am most certain that it is a software problem... Does anyone have any insight on this issue?  Any help is greatly appreciated! -Matt

As suggested per this bug-report at the Google Chrome forums...
BUG: hitting CTRL while the window is still scrolling zooms it

...I am now posting here as it turns out to be a driver related issue.I am running on a Y580, Win 10, got Lenovo Touchpad drivers installed via Windows Update. This has bugged me for a veeery long time and I finally figured out what causes it.The problem is this:

In any application where I scroll content, the "smooth" scrolling of the touchpad makes the display scroll even after I am done performing scroll gestures. In itself that ain't a bad thing, if only the application wasn't thinking I am still performing the gesture. Well, they all do. And that is a problem, because the second I touch the CTRL key, and I do that often, a ZOOM-EVENT fires and so I am constantly forced to reset the zoomlevel.Note that the current driver ui doesn't give me an option to disable smooth scrolling. In general, on the level of touchpad drivers, there needs to be a clear difference between "user is actually performing a scroll action" and "driver is still busy firing scroll events thanks to some smoothifying algorithmagic".
I now disabled scrolling in the driver settings alltogether and use TwoFingerScroll to do the scrolling; it allows me to set scrolling to "compatible" rather than "smooth". Scrolling now feels a wee more staccato but seeing an end to all the unwanted zooming that ain't a bad thing, at all.~FWIW, apart from some more tou... Answer:Y580 - Problem: leftover momentum of "smooth" touchpad scrolling triggers zooming

I had this same problem when using Google Chrome on my T440s (under both Windows 7 and Windows 10). The continual zooming had been annoying me for months, until yesterday I figured out that I was pressing the control key while there was some still some scrolling momentum. Thankfully in my case the fix is simple: I have turned down the "scrolling intertia" in the Synaptics control panel, and I am no longer experiencing unintentional zooming.

I finally figured out how to disable my touchpad. I tried everything I've read on these forums, but nothing worked. No matter how many times I double-clicked the little dot on the top-left corner of my touchpad, the light would not come on, and I could not disable the stupid touchpad. To fix this, I downloaded the newest version of the touchpad driver from HP.com for my laptop. After installing the driver, my computer rebooted, and then I was finally able to double-click the little dot on the top-left corner of my touchpad, and it was disabled!  So now the cursor no longer jumps around all over the page as I am typing (b/c my hand barely touches the touchpad).  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I hope this helps anyone else going through this struggle. It took me several hours to figure this out today.  Amy

I have an ASUS G75 notebook. I cannot find a way to disable the touchpad since upgrading to Win 10. I've googled and cannot find a solution anywhere. I've tried deleting the driver, Windows just re-installs it. I've tried disabling the software at startup thru Taskmanager, that doesn't disable the touchpad. Any help much appreciated.

EDIT: Got it. Disabled it in the bios.

I do not like the touch pad. When I had Windows 8.1, I simply disabled it. But Windows 10 has a mind of it's own. I go into settings for touch pad and put a check mark where it says "disable touch pad". But as soon as I restart, the touch is enabled. I go where I put the check mark and it's gone--Windows just un-checked it. There are a couple of places where I can disable it, but upon restarting it goes back to where it was. I even went in Device Manager and disabled it there, but the same thing happens.

Answer:Can't disable touchpad

Hi, silly question- do you have a little button just above your touch pad you can use to disable it? I have on my HP G60, noting you have an HP PC. (Sorry, not checked you particular laptop!)

Question: Disable TouchPad

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R500 laptop on which Win 10 hasbeen installed. The laptop was given to me just to try Win 10. I dislike usingthe touch pad and want to disable it but I can't do it. One way that issupposed to work is to go to Control Panel and bring up the mouse icon. Whenyou click on its Properties it should bring up "UltraNav" tab. But thetab is not there. No matter what I do the tab is not there. I finally went on aweb site that said to install UltraNav and the site gave me a link to down loadthe installation file which I did. But as I tried to install it finally came upwith a message that said, "Synaptics device not found." I did asearch to see if I had a file named UltraNav but there is no such file. Doesanyone have a suggestion? Thank you

Question: Disable touchpad

Hi, I'm new here - glad to have found this forum!

I stumbled upon a post that explained how to do this, but I lost it and apparently there is no "search." I followed the instructions to disable it through Device Manager, found it, but there's no way to disable it that I can see. I have Home Premium.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Disable touchpad

Hi cattywampus and welcome to Vista Forums

I take it that you are referring to a laptop or a notebook. Check your user manual for details on how to enable/disable the touchpad. As you have not provided any details on your machine (manufacturer, model number), I cannot help you any further as the method used varies. If you reply with the necessary details, I should be able locate some instructions for you.

Incidentally, if you scroll to the very bottom of the page you wil find a section 'Similar Threads'. You might like to check these out to see if they are of any help.

Question: Disable touchpad

Hi
Just got a new HP Pavilion Notebook. I didn't like using the touchpad, so I plugged in a mouse. Then, I went to the Control Panel and TRIED to disable the touchpad. The mouse works great, but the touchpad keeps enabling itself again. It really gets ugly when I'm using the mouse and stop to type something in and the weight of my hands causes the screen zoom to adjust and jump.
Nasty... Is there any way to completely disable the touchpad until I really want to use it? Thanks.

Answer:Disable touchpad

You can probably disable it, but need to know which service runs for it. Open a command window and type the following at the prompt: sc queryex > c:\services.txt

then attach the services.txt file in your c:\ folder here.

Hi

I have an Advent 7204 laptop running Vista Premium. It's one problem is the touchpad. Double tapping the touchpad is the same as clicking one of the mouse buttons which is infuriating as it happens frequently when I don't want it to whilst typing!!!

I'd like to disable this feature but cannot find any option for it (I can't even seem to disable the touchpad entirely and use a mouse instead?!?!). None of the Fn buttons seem to do it and there is nothing in my system tray.

Anyone ideas greatly appreciated...!

Hello. Long time no see. My mom has a Gateway mx-3230 laptop that she only wants to use a mouse on. The computer has had a fresh install of XP SP3, and I'm unable to disable the touchpad so she will only have mouse control of the computer.

I've gone into device manager and seen that the only things listed under mouse is the usb mouse that she wants to use, and an item for Microsoft PS2 device. The mouse can be disabled using the "usage" feature at the bottom of the screen. But when I switch to the PS2 listing, "usage" is ghosted out and I can't change that setting. So presently, both the mouse and the touchpad are functioning.

I'm not at her house right now, and can't run SIW etc. to find out the particular touchpad info. Until I can do that, does anyone have a suggestion for disabling only the touchpad? Thanks. Jim

Answer:Disable touchpad in XP

Laptops which don't automatically disable the trackpad when you plug a mouse in usually have a 'switch' in the form of the Fn key and one of the 'F' keys. Look for a key that has a representation of a mouse or a trackpad on it or even both. I've seen all three variants. And I can't tell you which 'F' key it will be on, this is one aspect of keyboards that is not standardised !

When you do find the relevant key, press and hold the 'Fn' key and press the relevant 'F' key at the same time, then let go. You should get some notification that the trackpad is disabled and it should stay that way until you press the same key combination to switch back at some future time.

What touchpad software do you have installed? In Synaptics or Alps, you should be able to click on the driver icon in the system tray or on mouse settings in control panel, then go to the device settings tab and disable the touchpad from there.

Yes. You can disable it completely in BIOS (I've done that and also skipped installing the now unneccessary driver when I reinstalled Win7). Or you can go to the Control Panel -> Mouse, and disable the Touchpad there.

Anyone know how I can disable the touchpad ? It has never worked properly on this machine - too long list of problems to get into... I tried the function hot keys - that does not work. I reinstalled the Hot Key drivers Fn F8 still does not work to turn off trackpad I went into BIOS and the trackpad option does not even showup under Mouse/Pointing Devices. Lenovo tech support has no idea (they can't fgure out why the hot key does not work and the BIOS does not list...) Anyone???

Answer:How to Disable Touchpad

I would assume that you are using a Thinkpad Edge, as that is the forum you posted it in. If you are using a thinkpad edge, then you have Lenovo Ultranav. If these are true, then here is how you disable the trackpad: 1) Click the start button.2) Click "Control Panel"3) Click "Hardware and Sound"4) Under the top heading, which is "Devices and Printers" click on the link "Mouse".5) In the diolog box that opens, click the tab that says "UltraNav"6) There will be two sections, one for the TrackPoint and one for the TouchPad (Trackpad). Uncheck the box next to the words "Enable TouchPad". I hope this helps. Thanks,SonofNun

Once in the Dell Touchpad option select Button settings
Then device select, and under pointing stick there should be an option to disable it.

I am now hating using this computer...HELP please!!!

Question: Disable Touchpad??

Toshiba laptop running xp sp3. The cursor jumps to random places in any word type program; notepad, Word, email replies, etc. Very annoying. I am thinking that maybe my wife is touching the touch pad while she types. However, I can't find any way to disable the touch pad. Under Device manager, the only thing showing is the USB mouse. Same in Control panel, only the USB mouse is shown. No icon for the touch pad in the tray. Anyone have an idea?

Answer:Disable Touchpad??

Yup. She is most definitely hitting the touchpad while typing. And while it isn't a problem that the mouse moves around. It is that "Tap to Click" is enabled. I had to download some really old synaptic mouse driver, since the driver windows wanted to give me wouldn't let me disable it.

I take it you have a USB mouse plugged in.

Have you tried unplugging it and checking the Device Manager to see what it says?

....if a USB mouse is present?

My users have Dell Latitude D630s with Synaptics Touchpads. They run Windows 7 Pro x86, and I was wondering if there's a setting/option/app that will disable the touchpad if a USB mouse was connected to the system. Many moons ago, the touchpads would be disabled when a PS/2 mouse was connected, but I haven't come across that functionality with USB mice.

Answer:Disable Touchpad...

I'm assuming the option isn't being displayed under:

Control panel> Mouse > Device Settings tab > Check the "Disable internal pointing device when external USB device is attached"

It depends on what Synaptics driver software is installed for that option to appear though.

I have a new HP Pavilion 17-g101dx with a Logitech mouse installed.

My problem, shared by numerous people, is that I cannot keep the touchpad
disabled. On restart it comes back on.

The cure seems to be dowloading driver 19.0.19.1 from Synaptics's website.
I download it and unzip then run the exe file and it says it is installed but
when I go back to the Device Manager it does not list the correct driver
number. This is after I do the required restart.

I have even uninstalled the driver which does no good.

Any suggestions.

Just got new yoga thinkpad ultrabook at work and i cannot turn off the touchpad.  the f6 trick doesnt work and i tried every combo of FN keys to be sure. IT installed the thinkpad software that gives you al the options in mouse properties but there is no button to turn off the touch pad. closest i can come is "use trackpoint only" and even then, if you press down on the pad it clicks. i was able to uncheck most boxes so most of the incidental issues while typing go away but i still do rest my palms on there and i have issues. i'm convinced its some kind of driver issue but maybe not? driver is synaptics 18.0.7.103 under synaptics device properties under device manager the only thing is synaptics pointing device and no option to disable it even when IT was on as admin.

Question: disable touchpad?

PLEASE can someone tell me in words of one syllable how to disable the touchpad on my Toshiba L450D without taking it apart and disconnecting it? I installed a wireless Microsoft mouse (superb) and now cannot get past the intellipoint mouse properties in order to disable the touchpad. The cursor flying all over place drives me NUTS. But what's the point of having a flexible portable laptop if I have to constantly take a wireless mouse everywhere? NO, FnF9 does not work either despite being labelled as being able to do so.

Answer:disable touchpad?

Hello Ian Rigby. Welcome to the Forum.

Normally that is quite easy:

Right-click on Synaptics Pointing Device icon on the Taskbar > pointing device properties > device settings tab > disable synaptics touchpad > apply > ok

If you do not have the Synaptics icon available then search for Synaptics from the Start search box.

Question: Disable Touchpad

I'm looking to disable the touchpad from within windows. I can disable in BIOS but would rather do it from within windows. Most drivers have an option in device manager to disable but the touchpad doesn't. Presently, Microsoft has installed it's official Windows 95 driver with it's updated version number, date and digital signature. Another option would be Synaptics driver but I'm not really into downloading and installing 14 mb's just to disable the touchpad. On the other hand, if I could get just the synaptics driver without the extra bloat, it might would work. Any ideas or suggestions?

to use a mouse. How am I supposed to solve this?

Starting with Win 8.1, there is no Lenovo driver for the Elan touchpad. It's provided directly by the Win 8.1 OS.Now, in previous OS, I could deactivate easily the touchpad, by entering in Mouse applet from Control Panel. Now, this procedure isn't available. More than that, in PC settings>PC and devices there is a Mouse and touchpad option, but not sliders for On/Off as should be.So, how can we disable the touchpad? Screenshot

After reading your posting I must say that we don't know anything about your notebook.
Which OS do you use?
Does FN keys work or not in general?
Is touchpad driver installed or not?

In my opinion you should visit Toshiba download page on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp and install touchpad driver and Toshiba value added package. After doing this check please if FN+F9 works. If not you should be able to disable touchpad in mouse properties. after Synaptics driver installation new additional tab will be added ? ?Device settings? and there you will find option enable/disable.

I have a Sony Viao VGN-SZ61WN/C. I couldn't stand Vista, especially Windows Mail, so i have "downgraded" to XP Home. All that is fine and I have all the relevant drivers-- I think! BUT, when I was using Vista, I was able to use an external mouse and disable the touchpad. Now however, I can't find any way of disabling it, resulting in text jumping all over the place whenever I accidentally brush it. I have asked Sony tech support and they have no answer. There is no button on the keyboard.
I have been into Device Manager and tried just uninstalling each of the pointing devices shown there in turn, to no avail.
2 devices are shown:
PS/2 Compatible Mouse
HID-compliant Mouse

If I uninstall the driver of the PS/2 Compatible mouse, the external mouse stops working.
If I uninstall the HID-compatible mouse, the same thing happens—the external mouse stops working. There is nothing there about a touchpad.
Problem is, this Viao had a link in Vista to Sony for configuring it. It is no longer there in XP.
Is there ANYTHING I can do, as I hate touchpads and want to use a mouse but this is driving me crazy, even if I am REALLY careful!
Help please—nice techy people!
