Ideapad Y510 keyboard issues: left and right shift keys producing bizarre characters

Question: Ideapad Y510 keyboard issues: left and right shift keys producing bizarre characters

I know this issue has been reported in other network blogs but no one ever seems to have an answer except onefellow who states he found a driver on the support.lenovo.com site but his link doesn't work! Simply put, underWindows 7/64-bit (and booting DOS which I tried too), the left and right shift keys on my Lenovo Ideapad Y510produce odd characters like {}'s and |'s when pressed. Yes I have actually replaced the keyboard, both old and newproduce this issue. This seems like a BIOS issue somehow, smart keyboard. I inherited this unit from one of ourusers, I know it originally ran a pre-installed Vist 32bit installation but had WIn7 when I got it. I have reinstalledWindows 7 and obtained compatible card reader and ACPI drivers and added the ATK hot keys drivers before and after I had this issue (that I recall). Is this a special BIOS behaviour for the shift keys that there is a special Windows keyboard driver to handle? The unit is running the latest BIOS from the support website (I re-burned it just in case). The system works perfectly in every other way, would be ashame to toss it just over this one issue. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have an Ideapad Y510 Laptop. There is a problem in my keyboard. The "Shift" key always remains pressed and the response time when I press any key takes around 1 min or so to appear. I have tried using another external keyboard but still the same problem.I am able to use the on-screen keyboard with the help of the mouse. Can someone please assist as to what the problem is. Thanks and regards,Manish Ambre

Answer:Ideapad Y510- Keyboard response takes 1 min and the shift key remains pressed.

Hi all, I also have the problem of having some keys on the keyboard that are not functioning any more (for example Backspace, t, left Shift, ...).  Computer is a Lenovo 3000 N100 notebook and roughly 1.5 years old. Now I am not sure whether a change of the keyboard will solve the issue or whether the problem is caused by something on the mainboard. My question is: Has anyone experience in this issue and has a clue about the root cause? It seems that I am not alone with this problem. I don't want to invest in a keyboard if the root cause is something else. I already disassembled and assembled the keyboard to check the mechanical connection between the keyboard and the mainboard. Effect: none. Thank you for your advice. Axel

Friend of mine called earlier saying every time he types in any key on the keyboard, be it be alphabetical key, numerical key, function key & whatnot, he get 2 letters appearing in his screen, for example type in "a" gives him "letter a AND letter c" & it happens only with few keys at certain times. This happens in all software i.e. Word, Internet, etc.

He tried restarting his PC but as soon as he types in his password in the welcome screen, he's experiencing the same problem & hence can't get his password typed correctly, making the system stopping him from getting into his Desktop/System.

A rather peculiar problem, I've never heard of & couldn't get much help from researching on Internet & wonder if this is a KNOWN problem & if so, how could it possibly get it sorted out.

1) Getting his keyboard work
2) Getting into the system first by breaking the password on the welcome screen, since EVEN when typing the password, he's getting TWO CHARACTERS when all he types is ONLY ONE.

Answer:Keyboard producing TWO characters on SINGLE key press ???

maybe if he holds shift or something... but he may have to buy a new keyboard.

I rather doubted (but can't ignore the possiblity) if it's a hardware problem or not & am therefore posting my thread here instead of in a "Hardware" section.

Odd, this problem looks familiar...

As I said in that other forum, I think it's either a mucked up keyboard, or maybe the BIOS has gone bonkers, so try 1) different keyboard, 2) reset BIOS.

I'm assuming it's a PS2 keyboard and not USB?

On my Thinkpad Yoga S1, the keys t, y, backspace, enter, caplock, and left shift are suddenly not working. This seems to be a common problem on lenovo computers, but the lenovo forum administrator closed the only thread that attempted to address this without any solution. The lenovo admin said that too many diferent models were involved. I don't understand why these exact specific keys are affected on so many Lenovo models. Lenovo has no solution, and will not support a thread to work towards one. The Microsoft store already replaced my keyboard under warrenty over a year ago, but the YTP S1 is now out of warrenty. This does not seem to be a hardware problem given the relatively recent Keyboard replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wont buy another Lenovo if this problem cant be solved. I've had tremndous problems with this computer and have found Lenovo to be unhelpful/unresponsive. This was an expensive computer when it was purchased.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

So here is the situation, everything seems to be working fine at first on my laptop keyboard as it has for about 6 months. However recently my down key broke, so I got a program that allows you to remap keys to other keys. So I remapped my down to key to my page down key, which is very close to it and it was working fine for a day.

But now I find that 2 keyboard commands don't work. When I am holding left shift the right arrow key doesn't work, and when I'm holding left control the left arrow key doesn't work. I'm not sure if it's related to the program I downloaded and I don't think it is but I thought I'd mention it. I've fought with google search results and my computer for 2 hrs and this is frustrating. Never had this problem before. Individualy each key still works fine, but LSHIFT + --> Doesnt work and LCTRL + <-- doesn't either. THIS SUCKs. Please help

I did not spill any liquids over the laptop, not install any new hardware.  As far as I can tell, these are the only keys that do not work. I can type all these letters perfectly fine from an external USB keybaord (which I am using right now). Are there any ways to fix this? I've tried uninstalling the internal keyboard, but the computer asks me to restart after every attempt, and after restarting the keyboard is still working.  Any solutions?

Hi. I'm new here, so please forgive me if there's any local etiquette I haven't noticed! I bought my first Lenovo machiine recently, which was an X230 from the UK Outlet Store. I was a bit surprised that this arrived with a "US International" keyboard rather than a UK one, but with a little bit of remapping I've made it work for me, and I like the machine very much :-) However, I've found that when typing fast the left shift doesn't always seem to register. I can't pin down exactly what causes it in terms of the part of the key that's pressed or anything, because it doesn't occur if I slow down to examine what's going on... but it's getting quite frustrating to miss capital letters off so many sentences! Is this slightly hard-to-define problem something that Lenovo would easily resolve under warrenty? And could it be done without me having to send the machine back to them? (Because it's from the Outlet Store it has a return-to-base warrenty, but I understand that the keyboard is a user replacable unit?) Thanks for any advice.Simon.

Answer:X230 keyboard - left shift not always registering

you probably just need a new keyboard.

At the left bottom of taskbar, right click windows icon, click on Control Panel, Ease Of Access, and then Change How Your Keyboard Works. If there's a check mark in box - Turn on Sticky keys) then uncheck it and click Apply.

Hi All,I sent my laptop in for repair because the left shift key was sticking.  7025187370 is my Service Order Number. I received an email from Jason that works for Flex for permission to replace my harddrive. I asked why and got no response, but said yes anyways because I use this laptop for work. Remember all I had was a keyboard issue. I received the laptop back, keyboard was still the same. I spoke with support and asked them what they written in their notes for the diagnostics. He said, "keyboard cable is loose and replaced ssd is faulty (no reason). When I called in and told them that I was not able to run my virtual machines (I upgraded to to Windows 10 Pro to use the Hyper-V feature), they told me it was a software issue. They also said that they replaced the harddrive with the same model as I got it from Best Buy in DEC 2016. I tested my VM's that I backed up on the original HD onto a seperate machine and they work fine. My files weren't corrupted and my Lenovo Yoga 910 was not working properly. I then chatted with their tech support and asked for the original HD model. Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the shift keys (both of them) on my pavilion have developed a problem. After a non-specific amount of time, but never any longer than a few minutes after boot (and sometimes straight away) the shift keys do not work. If I revert to Windows 8.1 they function perfectly, but if I then upgrade to Windows 10 again, the problem returns. I have tried rolling back (and updating) the synaptics touchpad driver as I found some posts that suggested this might be relevant. This does nothing.  I have connected an external keyboard. This works fine under Windows 10. I have removed the keyboard in device manager and had it picked up again on a reboot. None of the things I have tried have made a difference. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

Hi guys,

I have the following problem that appeared a couple of weeks ago. I use Left Alt + Shift to switch between 2 input languages for the keyboard. Everything was fine until recently when this combination stopped changing the keyboard language in IE8. I've found that now I'm able to switch the keyboard layout with Left Alt + Shift + Shift (in other words pressing Shift two times while holding Alt down) and also it seems that other people posting on the Internet have had the same problem. But I couldn't find an answer how to fix it. It's not the biggest problem but it is a little bit frustrating cause in all other applications it is working as it is intended, only in IE it's not... Any ideas what could be the cause for this?

Hi i am hoping someone can help with my problem.  I have a G505 laptop for over a year now.  About two months ago some keys on the right hand side of the keyboard stopped working.  Mainly the shift key, enter key, return key.  Other keys around these working fine.  I cannot use Word or type emails now and rely on the onscreen keyboard to compete return or enter functions which is painful.  Also, sometimes when I boot the laptop up, the screen is very dark.  The only way to rectify this is to reboot (sometimes several times) or for some reason if I plug in a HDMI cable to link laptop to TV, the brightness returns straight away. I would be very grateful for any guidance on these issues. Many thanks in advance and kind regards,JB

I already know it's not sticky keys. If the shift key is held down for too long, it locks the keyboard entirely. The only way I've found to fix it is to log out. It doesn't make the usual high pitch noise that sticky keys makes, but there is a much lower tone that plays whenever a key is hit after it locks. I believe it's some sort of safety, like sticky keys, but I've checked those settings and can press shift as much as I want as long as it isn't held down for, I'd estimate, 10-15 seconds.

Answer:Keyboard locks if shift held-Not Sticky keys

You have got keyboard Filter Keys turned on. Using your mouse go into Ease of Access > Keyboard and untick Filter keys, click on Apply, click on OK
If you want to check that out, when you are in Ease of Access > Keyboard and Filter keys, click on 'Set up Filter Keys' and you will see the keyboard shortcut to activate Filter keys is 'hold down shift for 8 seconds' then follows the settings for the delayed responses to keys being pressed.

Just recently my Y510 appears to be inputting false keystrokes. I use both Windows Vista and Windows 7 OS's and the same thing happens with both.  Depending on the applications that are running, and only for the current active window - these false inputs will have different effects, but always consistent within the app that is in focus, e.g. in MS Outlook, a regular signal will cause the presently selected e-mail from the inbox to be prepared for forwarding (but without a forwarding address, is not sent)  This will happen time and again if left and many new windows are initiated over a period of a couple of hours.  Other apps will have other effects - e.g. MS Word will start an uninitiated word search, etc. etc. It may be that one of the keys has a physical problem - but none that I have noticed in regular use.

Answer:Ideapad Y510 - keyboard buffer problem?

Looked up the forwarding command in Outlook, it is CTRL+F: Outlook Shortcuts I'm not sure, but it may be a defective keyboard. As it seems to be random and not triggered, it may be hard to diagnose without sending it off to Lenovo.

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

I have new Y510. I have problems with Vista crashing. Sometimes the error will state a fault with explorer, other times I'll just get a blank screen which won't log back on. This usually happens when waking from sleep. I've done the one key recovery a couple of times and while things have improved, it's still unstable. I'm planning on reinstalling Vista from disk. WIll this affect my partition and one key recovery? I want to know before I go ahead with the reinstall.

Answer:Vista issues ideapad Y510

Seems like some kind of application you use causes crash every time. System reinstall will not help. Update BIOS - this has a chance to advance in fixing the case. Also, many people complained on such behaviour on windows sleep mode in Y510. Try using hibernation instead.

But if I hold the keys, it doesn't continue highlighting text. It is highly annoying, as I would always use that function as part of my job. I checked with an external keyboard, and it worked perfectly fine (it would keep on highlighting more and more text as I held the keys). Is there any way I can fix my laptop or change settings to make that work? I'll have to return the laptop if I can't fix this.
Thank you.

Answer:Keyboard issue : holding ctrl+shift+left/right arrow doesn't work

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
We would suggest you check if the on screen Keyboard is working fine .
Try the Ctrl & Shift keys on the right side on the key board .Boot into BIOS and let us know if the Right and Left keys are working .
Kindly private message the service tag to the system.
Thanks
Robin

Hello, thanks for any help. My "3edc" keys are typing incorrect characters. They display different items each time I press the keys. I replaced the keyboard and it solved the problem for a few weeks, then the same problem returned. I do not have the original Windows CD. Moderator note: Log removed and topic moved BACK to Windows 7. In this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic424863.html member was told that the problem is not malware related and instructed to post in the Windows 7 forum OR External Hardware. ~ OB

hi. sorry for the lack of capitalization because one of the problems i am having is that my shift keys wont work. i replaced my motherboard myself with one provided by lenovo and everything is working except for the backlight and the shift key. since every other key is working i feel it might be a software issue but cannot say for certain. any help will be awesome. thank you.

Answer:y510p. replaced motherboard, now shift keys and keyboard backlight not working.

A few things to try.......

Try booting into Windows Safe mode to see if the problem happens there.

Try using a USB keyboard to see if the Shift keys operate on the USB board.

Try uninstalling the keyboard driver, reboot the computer and install a fresh copy of the keyboard driver.  The link below is for the available drivers from Lenovo for your model. Just select your operating system in the top box for the correct driver listing.......

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-y-series-laptops/ideapad-y510p...

If none of the above work..... disassemble the laptop and reseat the ribbon cable for the keyboard.  I would also use a soft cloth and some alcohol to lightly wipe the contacts of the ribbon cable.  Possibly skin oil or dirt got on the contacts.

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

Answer:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

When I press certain keys, multiple characters appear. when I press the h key I get "h6"when I press the - I get "  '-  " And, there are others.  It began one morning with 3 characters appearing when I typed the "x".  since x is the first character of my signon, i had to use the screen touchpad to be able to signon to the computer. The problem abated but many characters still give me a weird result. Has anyone seen this?  Any ideas on the solution?  I have only had this Laptop 4 months.

Answer:z400 keyboard problem - multiple characters appear when certain keys are pressed.

hi JWPesante,

Can you try to boot the machine in Safe Mode and observe if the issue persists (this is to isolate any possible software that might be interferrng with the keyboard). If this works fine without the additional keys appearing, perform a clean boot and observe in normal mode.

If you encounter the same problem in Safe Mode then you most likely have a malfunctioning keyboard. I recommend you contact Lenovo and report the issue.

Hi

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR363. Since last evening, I'm facing a problem with the four arrow keys. They type strange characters.

The up key ends up tying "oig". The down key ends up typing a backslash. RIght key types "LJH" and left key types ",mn". This is happening in all the applications - office, notepad, browser, etc. It's the same characters every time, not some random characters. For example, if I turn the Num Lock on, the "oig" becomes "65g".

All other keys are working absolutely fine. Only these four keys are an issue. These also work fine for 2-3 mins in between suddenly, and then go back to their erratic but predictable ways!!

I tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling, cleaning the keyboard (the keys are absolutely in shape visually). As a heavy user of Office, I am finding it impossible to handle this even for a day...

Please help with a solution/ suggestion....

Answer:Keyboard problem - arrow keys type junk characters

In our experience with the Vaio keyboards, you have reached the time when a replacment NEW keyboard is the best option.
Sometimes, turning the keyboard upside down and giving it a thorough cleaning with difluoroethane gas such as Dust Off (a lot of it) will take care of it... but not often.

After purchasing a ThinkPad y510 with two nVidia 750m's, I reformatted my Windows 8 HD and installed Windows 7, which worked perfectly after installing the appropriate drivers for my system, but my SLI was having a very strage screen "stutter," (in varying severerities for different programs) which Lenovo support eventually claimed to be the result of the cards being out of sync, a problem that should be fixed by a Lenovo bios update (found here), however this update is only available for Windows 8 machines. It seems like a long shot to hope that Lenovo would release a Windows 7 version of this at my request (although I'm astounded there isn't one for such a critical bug), but at the very least I was hoping to confirm this information as being correct and see if there are any alternative soulutions to updating to a crappy OS just to fix SLI.

This is going to sound like a really weird problem and I cannot figure it out.  When I am typing and press the Shift key to capitalize a letter (like at the beginning of a sentence), when I let the Shift key go, it feels and looks like it has returned/bounced back up, but when I continue to type, it capitalizes all of my letters as if the CapsLock key is pressed (but it is not).  I have to hit the Shift key a few times before it will ?release? and let me type in lower case again.  This also happens with the Ctrl key.  But when I press the Space bar, it does not type a space.  After a few hits of the Space bar, it will finally register. I called Lenovo and they said it was a bad keyboard.  The overnighted me a new keyboard (that really impressed me) and I immediately installed it.  After a few hours of use, it started happening again.  I became discouraged, but then realized something? It ONLY happens when I am using Internet Explorer 7.  If I load MS Word, I can type and nothing screws up.  The keyboard works flawlessly.  As a matter of fact, I am typing this in Word because it is too frustrating typing in the provided box.  I am using Vista Business SP1.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have not tried to connect to my router using an Ethernet cable, but this happens on any wireless connection, LWAN & WWAN, and in different WiFi hotspots; and my wireless connections are fas... hi,
i'm having a problem with my toshiba laptop keyboard. about a week ago i noticed i was no longer able to use the control key to copy and paste, but i rarely use that key for anything else, so i didn't think much of it except that i must've accidently changed some command. now, my shift key isn't working--as you can tell from the lack of capitalization in this. i think this is a different problem than what was addressed in earlier posts about shift key problems in toshiba laptops. in my case, the shift key worked only sporadically. currently, it's not working at all. first the right one stopped working, now the left one isn't working either. there doesn't seem to be any pattern to when they do/don't work, so it seems unlikely that these keys suddenly got stuck or something. i'm checking for viruses now. does anyone have any other ideas? (now it's working...that's so strange, and annoying).
Thanks,
Laurel

Hi, I recently started experiencing issues with my Ideapad Y510, specs can be found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146367, and it's running Vista. It started repeatedly going into standby while I am using it, around 5 times in a row every time I turn it on, and it beeps as though I have closed the top. I disabled the standby by mode and now instead of going into standby my screen goes black and it beeps but it then immediately allows me to resume what I was doing without having to "wake" it up. But it still does this several times in a row. It has the same issue whether plugged in or unplugged, although it is much worse when unplugged (the screen image becomes warped/pixelish for a couple of seconds, until I click on the screen). When plugged in it seems to calm down after 5-10 minutes, when unplugged it is continuous. It also does this when I have the battery removed and it's simply plugged in. I have no idea if this is something fixable, so any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! JodyPS I have tried plugging and unplugging it, removing the battery, repositioning the screen angle, virus and malware checks, and updating windows software, could it be something in my laptop hinge?

I have a Lenovo G560 laptop. Had this problem once before and computer tech fixed problem, but moved cities. Worked fine but recently had a windows update. Now when I press the right shift key and c nothing happens. Left shift and c displays a capital c. How do I restore the right shift c ?

Answer:Right shift and c not working, Left shift and c works fine for a capital c

hi richiestac,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, have you considered doing a System Restore to fix the issue and also to isolate if the Windows Update that got installed is the one that messed up the functionality of the Right Shift key ?

If doing a System Restore isn't an option, you could try the following:
1. Ensure you're using an English keyboard layout (see this guide)
2. Boot the machine in Safe Mode and observe the functionality of the Right Shift key
   - If the Right Shift key works then there's most likely an application in the background that's remapping the key. Perform a clean boot and observe the functionality in normal mode.

 - if the Right Shift keys still doesn't work on Safe Mode, install Passmark's Keyboatd Test Software to check if the Right Shift key is physically registering.while being pressed. If the key registers but turns off when it's held down then it's most likely a defect on the Right Shift key and a replacement key or keyboard might be necessary.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards

This is a laptop, correct?

Seems like the numlock function is stuck on.

If not, it may be an issue with the keyboard, drivers, or perhaps the hotkey application.

I don't see any active infection in this log.

Hi All, My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro has been presenting itself with a bunch of inter-related problems that have made it difficult for me to google the symptoms: 1: Bottom row of keys (Z-?)+ spacebar does not work2: Backspace works, but only once. If I type another3: Some keys are mapped incorrectly: pg down turns the screen blank (like the f9 key), the screen brightness down works but also pulls up the project screen (f10), there are probably others I haven't found yet4: Mouse trackpad works only intermittently5: While typing strange things sometimes happen (things being highlighted or deleted randomly) as though keys/the mouse were being pressed. I've bought a USB keyboard w/ a trackpad and thankfully it works.  I'm currently using it with my screen folded back to try to eliminate the built-in trackpad but problem #5 persists. These problems started up yesterday. I did a full virus scan (nothing turned up) and then recovered Windows 10(keeping my files) and all problems continued. My keyboard drivers are up to date. This whole situation is strange and kind of difficult to describe, so I apologize if things are unclear. This description wasn't comprehensive, I've neglected some smaller effects that go away. I appreciate any help you might have.

I have to report also 3 issues with my Lenovo Ideapad U410:1. WI-FI issues since I bought the notebook, end of February 2013.    - I tried updating the wireless drivers, but did not help.2. Left hinge detached from the lid 3 months ago.3. The LCD screen remains black after starting the laptop, it takes several reboots to eventually display the image. The left hinge detached from the lid apparently because of poor design, the plastic keeping the screws in place broked in small pieces... There are still pieces of plastic around the screws... No way to place the hinge back, unless passing the screws through the LCD lid... Being a desktop support technician, A+ certified and Dell technician certified, I supported IBM laptops, then HP laptops, and now Dell laptops. Never had this kind of issue with other laptops. I have an 16 inch HP laptop since 2008, and still no issues, also WI-FI works wonderful. I bought the U410 to have a smaller notebook, as the HP is much biger, thicker and much havier, but unfortunately after only 2.5 years of use, I cannot use the Lenovo Ideapad U410 anymore. I would invite Lenovo to replace the lid, fix the display issue, and also fix the WI-FI issue. Thank you for reading this.

Laptop: Ideapad Y510 - D2 (bought from J&R electronics)Model No: 15303Item No: 7758 This is that infamous model that came out few years back with the faulty nvidia cards with heat issues. I bought it when it first came out for $999+tax. I have replaced the nvidia 8600m GT graphics card twice (costing $300+ in total - two cards + service/installation charges) but the display again stopped working few days back. Is there any way I can throw away the entire motherboard along with the nvidia card and downgrade to a simpler motherboard and chipset with integrated Intel graphics? All I need to run in that laptop is Microsoft office, mozilla firefox, an antivirus, lan/wifi and the 5 speakers. The processor, LCD display, hard disk, keyboard, speakers, fan etc are all in good condition. I wish there was a way to make the display work without attaching the nvidia card to the motherboard. Any suggestions what motherboard+chipset should I go for? Hi,
I noticed this issue in the past few days. When I press the apostrophe key, the cursor moves but it does not show anything. If I press it again, it will show 2 apostrophe signs and then if I backspace, it might or might not show the first one.
I thought it was an issue with my surface 3 but now I've also seen the same behaviour in my laptop
My laptop also has had the apostrophe and @ keys swapped though I think I know why that is so.
What could the issue be? I've not had time to troubleshoot the issue but maybe someone has an idea?

My old keyboard was refusing to re-initialize after the peripheral reset during win 7 boot. It's about a decade old, so I just assumed it was dead. I got this new Dell Inspiron 7568 about a week ago. Since I got it the up and left keys have not worked together. They work individually but not together. This does is not isolated to my computer, the display computer at Best Buy also had this issue. This is a big problem because I need those keys in order to test my programs. I have looked in many places some say it is a problem with the bios other say with the drives and others say with the hardware.
I have already tried calling technical support and they could not do anything about it. This is not the first post regarding this problem: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19679981 (slightly different model). My last computer was also a Dell Inspiron but an older model and it did not have this problem.

Hello Lenovo Community, I recieved my Flex 2-14 about 2 weeks ago. Right after I took it out and began using it I noticed the keyboard was really "flexing" when typing, especially in the middle and left side. Also, when typing, sometimes the keys won't register which causes letters to be missing in words. In almost every sentence I type there are letters always missing. I noticed that I have to press in the exact center of keys or else they will not register. Even if I press a key all the way down on the sides, nothing happens. This is a really disappointing keyboard from Lenovo, definitely the worst I've used. Is anyone else experiencing either of these issues? What can I do to get this fixed? Thank you.

I have a strange problem that just started today. I have Win 7 Home Premium 64bit and a Saitek Cyborg Keyboard V7 (KU-0728). When using the left shift key to press the 9 key to get a left parentheses [(] I get nothing. The left shift key works for all other keys and I can access [(] by using the right shift key. I'm leaning towards not a hardware issue due to the fact that the left shift works on other keys and the 9 key works with the right shift key. Could it be a driver issue? I've done some searching but can't relly find anything on this issue. Seems kind of wierd that the left shift would not work with only one key. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, the latptop is only about 2.5 months old now... 3 weeks ago randomly the keyboard's keys on the laptop itself stopped working. No clue why, Ive checked drivers, did a reboot, tried safe mode, etc... It's only on the laptop itself. The keys that work are tyhg caps lock num lock and maybe a couple others... Ive never spilled anything on the laptop nor have I ever dropped it. I was in love with this laptop for the price I paid for it at Best Buy until the keyboard stopped working on it... It just randomly happened and I'm not sure why. The keys don't appear to stick or anything like that... (normal keystrokes just nothing happens in result of clicking them) I am using a keyboard plugged into it right now... I really need to get this fixed and I'm very upset at the fact it happened just 2 months after the purchase... So that cancels out my bestbuy 1 month warranty right there. I really can't deal with this much longer considering the fact that I was planning to use this laptop for my work.. If I can't get a simple easy fix I will have to find something new somewhere else... sorry to say. Praying for an easy solution/fix.

At first I only had this problem when entering my password (I have Windows 8.1), I would try to enter my password and then notice that my "I" didn't want to work anymore. Pressing the button for a long time made it work again. When my laptop was fully booted I wouldn't notice any problem with the keys, not even a little. But slowly over time, there was no way I could make my I work when I was entering my password and then I also noticed my K didn't want to work either. It started happening randomly when I was on the internet or writing on Wordpad: my I and K would stop working. First after a bit of pressing on both keys at the same time it started working and so I ignored it, but now sometimes i'm waiting and pressing the buttons for ten minutes long before they work properly again. For 3 minutes they work, only to stop working right afterwards again. ^, *, -, and . stop working too, but those are only minor problems. I can work without punctuation, but I can't work without my K and I. I don't think there's a problem with the keys itself, I assume if it's something with the actual keyboard then my K and I would stop working seperately at different times, and not all together at the same time? They don't feel stiff either, and I also never eat at my laptop so it's definitely not bread crumbs or anything under them if there is. I  tried something that I re... Read more

Answer:Y500 Ideapad, some keyboard keys stop working

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

If you have a USB keyboard available can you try that and see if the problem continues ?

I suspect that the USB will work without problems,  That the problem you are having is with the keyboard itself.  Since the problem is random, but slowly getting worse and centers around the K and L keys could be a good indication of a keyboard defect.   Is your system still under warranty ?

Hi, Some keys like o,5,l,g,h,Ctrl....etc are not working in my laptop. I have reinstall windows7 ultimate but still not working. Even I have changed the keybard. kindly do the needful for the same. Thanks,Lalit

Answer:Lenovo ideapad z570 keyboard some keys are not working.

hi Lalit,

Welcome to the Forums.

It's odd that some of the keyboard keys are still not working even after a keyboard replacement (btw, is this replacement keyboard brand new?).

If connecting a USB keyboard works fine then there's most likely a problem with the replacement keyboard or the keyboard connector from the motherboard. In this case, I would first get the replacement keyboard RMA'ed to rule out a bad replacement keyboard. If this doesn't fix it, consider bringing the unit to a local computer repair center for checkup.

I updated my Lenovo ideapad u530 touch from windows 8 to 8.1 and noticed something strange began to happen from time to time with the physical keyboard.  I have just updated to Windows 10 and the problem persists. With ONLY SOME of the keys on the PHYSICAL keyboard (not the touch on-screen keyboard) certain keys, when pressed, enter more (or different) characters than correspond with the key on the keypad. I HAVE JUST DISCOVERED THAT, IF I HOLD DOWN THE KEY, THIS ONLY HAPPENS WITH THE INITIAL "KEYSTROKE" ...  w key gives me \wp key gives me 'pg key gives me gru key gives me hur key gives me gre key seems to shut the active window I only found this post ... which was the closest, BUT DIFFERENT from what I'm suffering:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-L-R-and-SL-series/Keyboard-Hotkey-issue-on-SL510/td-p/450081 I HAVE TO USE THE ON-SCREEN TOUCH SCREEN AVOID THIS.The problem is NOT CONSTANT and comes and goes ... I'm also dealing with sproradic LONG LONG LONG boot times when starting up the computer.   Some times it takes several minutes, and other times it takes 20 seconds to reach the log-on / password screen. THE KEYBOARD ERROR PROBLEM IS MOST URGENT!PLEASE HELP!!!  Thanks,Ryan

Answer:ideapad U530: PHYSICAL keyboard ERRORS (CRAZY keys w,e,r,p,h, etc)

I'M DESPARATELY SEEKING A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM....In the meantime, I have discovered that (I'm not sure that it's ALWAYS this way, but it has worked a couple of times for me) when the problem is present, I have been able to "deactivate" it by pressing Alt+Esc ... that SEEMS to return the keys to their proper assigned letters/characters.  (could this be a clue?) I do not have a full list of the anomolies, however I can say that I have run a FULL Lenovo Soultions Hardware Scan.I have upgraded from the factory installed Windows 8 to 8.1 ...and just recently to Windows 10. I have the machine configured with Language Preferences and InputKeyboard Languages to: English US QWERTYEnglish United States - International  QWERTYSpanish QWERTY I can toggle between the three, and once the problem is present, it appears in ALL THREE language settings. Hoping to progess with this problems and to resolve it soon, so that I can address the "Wake from Sleep" problems the machine is displaying as well (sometimes it "WAKES" immediately following entereing SLEEP mode, with all of the settings deacivated in the DEVICE MANAGER so that in the POWER MANAGEMENT tab of EACH and EVERY device that offers this option, they are configured so that the box is UNCHECKED on "Allow this device to wake the computer". But please... FIRST THINGS FIRST.  I NEED TO RESOLVE THIS KEYBOARD ISSUE A.S.A.P. Thanks, in advance.Ryan

Good morning,  a few hours ago I accidentally spilled some water on the keyboard of my Lenovo Z500 Touch. The PC was going with battery only, not connected with adapter. I cleaned the water immediately. I turned it off, only turned it on a couple of times to see if everything was ok. Now (about 6 hours from the accident) most keys of the keyboard do not work. I turned the pc upside down, hope it is only some water left within the keys and now I'm waiting that the water dries.  any other advice? Thank you

I've run the trial version of MS Office 2007 for a month now. Today Powerpoint is doing something strange when I insert special characters such as a Euro charachter, , or a Spanish accent on a letter, .

What occurs is that Powerpoint doesn't move the cursor to after the character and it cuts the space before and after the character so it sticks too close to the character before and after. Basically it bunches up the special character with the before and after characters, and then positions itself in front of the special charachter I just wrote. Then I need to add space before and after the special character I wrote to make it give space around the character.

Any ideas???

Answer:Office 2007, Powerpoint, cursor behaves bizarre with special characters

I'd have a go at reinstalling it again!
With Office, when you reinsert the original CD, one of the options is usually "repair/modify" the installation.
You can't do any harm with this method.
If no luck you might be best to uninstall Powerpoint and the do a full reinstall again.

Hi, since about one year we're using a Thinkpad T61 6458W4Z thatevery once in a while has several strange issues: - Sometimes when writing in an application, most of the time  this is Internet Explorer 7, all letters typed in the  keyboard are written von right to left - instead from left  to right. - In addition to that we have problems with the touchpad and  mouse (if plugged in). Sometimes, the left mouse button  keeps pressed so it's not possible to work anymore (i.e. in  Excel everything is marked when moving the mouse and so on). The only possiblity to solve the problems (for some time) isto reboot the notebook. I already upraded the notebook to the latest BIOS and drivers, tough currently I am not able to access the support pages onLenovo's website for this model - 6458W4Z does not seem to bea valid model anymore. OS is Windows XP SP3 and the problems have been there sincethe purchase of the notebook. Willing to make a call at Lenovo now, however, any ideas whatthis might be? Thankslukin

I own a Dell Inspiron 17 5767 laptop, and have encountered the a problem as shown in the image below:
When I press the left alt key on the laptop, it activates multiple keys, including the F4 key, and forces the windows that I've opened to close. This is not due to other keys being stuck, since I've tried the on-screen keyboard, on which the left alt key works perfectly. The right alt key works as it's supposed to.
I also tried the left alt key in safe mode, which still malfunctions as shown here.
Is this due to corrupted registry? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 17 left alt key malfunction (multiple keys activated when pressing the left alt key)

Hi leochi,
Thanks for posting. It doesn't sound like your registry is corrupted, but sounds more like your keyboard needs to be reset. Here is some information from another user http://www.thewindowsclub.com/reset-keyboard-settings-default-windows
If that's not working for you, then please run a systems diagnostics by pressing F12 at startup or by running Dell Support Assist.  Make a note of any errors you encounter and contact Tech Support.  You can contact Tech Support at 1-800-624-9896  or 1-800-288-4410, or you can initiate a chat session http://dell.to/2v4snVm

Hello! For a month now i have been experiencing several issues with my Lenovo laptop. I've went through lots of online tutorials but none worked, some even made it worse. I decided to come to this forum since the problems are making the laptop unusable  The problems are: Almost all of my keyboard keys are repeating after being held for around 3 seconds (like thissssssssssssssssss), then it will randomly stop after some time. This is really annoying espically while playing a game (including all letters, numbers, ctrl, shift, backspace and the space bar) The space bar presses itself randomly while typing (  lik e   t h  is ). Sometimes it doesn't press when i press it, and sometimes it doesn't stop pressing when i press it, unless i press another key. In the Login screen when turning the laptop on, the space bar is always active (fills the password box with spaces) The Backspace button isn't always working too These occur basically everywhere, browsers, games, text editors, everything that does something when a button is pressed Laptop information: OS: Windows 10 64-bit, x64 based processorModel: Lenovo Ideapad 100-15IBY4.00 GB RAM, 3.88 of which are usable829.2 GB total free memory space (C and D)Nothing is plugged in except the mouse (problems occur with it unplugged too)I have never spilled drinks on the laptop What i tried:Scanned for viruses with Windows Defender and AVG, nothing foundCleaned junk files with Disk Clean... Okay, so my keyboard (Offbrand Chinese stuff; only labeling on it is Facebox written on the front) was working fine until two days ago, I wasn't doing anything specific, just browsing the web, and noticed that the typing was kinda iffy, so I tested it out, and here are the results:

The keyboard registers a held key as if it's being tapped repeatedly, independent of Windows' key repeat setting. Also, if I held Shift and tapped a key, for example Shift-A, it will come out as Aa half the time.

I've tried disassembling the keyboard to make sure it was clean, and reinstalling the drivers via Device Manager didn't work.

Another example of the problem is that if I'm in a game and hold down W, the character will move a bit, stop, move a bit, stop, and repeat that loop until I let go.

About two months after I bought my laptop the keyboard stopped working properly. Lenovo fixed it, which is great, but the new keyboard is starting to show the same symptoms as the old one. They'd probably fix it again, but I'd have to go a week without my laptop, and I'd have no guarantee that the third keyboard would be any longer lasting than the first two. It's totally unreasonable for me to have to send my laptop in every two months for hardware problems. What can I do? I certainly can't afford to spend another few hundred dollars on a new laptop less than six months after purchasing this one...

Question: Left Shift+A+Q

Hello everyone. I have Toshiba Qosmio X300-14Y. I have installed vista 64-bit on it and installed only the drivers I needed. I've also installed the 64-bit bios which I've downloaded from the toshiba website, for my laptop. Now everything works fine except one thing. This laptop is a gamers laptop (you might say a gamer should not prefer a laptop but the things worked this way), and as you know, when you use a scoping rifle you might feel to use left shift -> steady rifle + A -> going left + Q->leaning left. The problem is, when I use this combination, the key "A" doesn't work. I tried the same combination in notepad and it doesn't work neither. The weird thing is, if I use the right shift+A+Q -> it works, left shift+E+D -> it works. To summarise, only this combination doesn't work, if I change a key, it works. As I said it's not caused by the game because I tried it in notepad; when I pres left shift+E+D -> it types first capital E then capital D, but when I press left shift+Q+A -> it only types capital Q. But the situation is different with right shift, it types what it is supposed to type. I'ld be glad if you help. Thank You

Answer:Left Shift+A+Q

Try attaching an external keyboard and see if the same thing happens
