I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't get my computer to boot at all, not into CMOS, not anything. It doesn't power up. And the green LED light that comes with the power supply is constantly flashing.

This has happened before, normally when I wait a while before trying to boot, I can get the fan inside the power supply to spin just a little bit. The last time it happened, I fixed it by taking out one of the memory sticks.

I have no other power supply to test, so I don't know whether it's a problem with the motherboard, or the power supply. However, I notice that when the 24-count connector pin isn't connected to the motherboard, the light doesn't flash, it just stays lit green. When I plug it in, it starts flashing again. Maybe it's the motherboard, maybe the pins are bad, I'm not sure what that suggests.

Is there anything I can do to diagnose this clearer?

Answer:Computer won't start, power supply light flashing.

My sister-in-law has an eMachine that she turned off and unplugged before leaving for vacation. A week later she returned and plugged it back in only to find it won't turn on. I don't know much about this pc other than it's a tower and about 3 or so years old. I figured it was probably the PSU (power supply) but wanted to verify as many things as possible. Basically, there is a green light on the back of the pc (on the PSU) that will flashes on and off when you try to turn on the computer. The PSU fan doesn't spin and nothing else makes any attempt to turn...just dead.

I pulled all the power connectors and jumpered the power switch pins (15-16), this gave me a solid green light on the PSU and the fan spun normally. I tested with a voltmeter and got the proper voltage on all the pins. I am thinking that this probably rules out the PSU but not 100% as something could be 'pulling it down'???

Any ideas on what else to look at? I hate to buy a PSU when it appears this one is ok. That pretty much leaves the MoBo and/or CPU. I've pulled all the cards and memory trying to get it to do anything and nothing affects it. I suspect there is something wrong with the MoBo but don't know how to verify that.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:eMachine power supply (PSU) green light flashing, won't turn on

What you need is a PSU Tester which you can get on eBay that will tell you if the power supply is bad.

I've been very happy with my Z570 up until Friday. The battery was very low so I plugged in the charger as usual. I immediately noticed that the battery icon on the laptop wasn't showing as charging. The laptop then cut out and I noticed that the light on the adaptor was flashing. I tried to start the laptop several times but it has been completely dead since Friday. The light on the adaptor comes on as normal until I plug it into the laptop - then it starts flashing. I have tried plugging in the adaptor with the battery removed and it still flashes and fails to power up the laptop. I work from home and need a reliable laptop. Can anyone kindly advice me the best course of action to take? Given that it is only 4 months out of warranty will Lenovo be of any assistance? I would potentially be interested in getting another Lenovo laptop but frankly I was originally hoping that it would last far longer than 16 months. Greatly appreciate any advice - I haven't tried to start the laptop since Friday lunchtime. I am keeping everything crossed that  a few days rest may get it working again but I very much doubt it will!

Can you try doing a power drain,
Remove the AC and Battery, hold down the power button for at least 10 sec,
Reconnect the AC and battery and see if it is still the same.
Try Pressing the novo button and see if it will boot up to a Lenovo Recovery Screen,

Hello all, my I-INC monitors' power light blinks from time to time and I'd like to know if anyone has suggestions as to what that might mean. The monitor hasn't stopped working (YET) but I would like to know if it's a major concern.

OKAY, I just pushed the cables to check whether they were loose and the blinking has stopped. Still, by contacting this forum I backed into the solution:-D

Yoga 13 laptop. The power button light flashes when on as if the computer is asleep. The light turns off when the computer is powered down, and blinks as it should when asleep. The issue is when the computer is open and awake, the light is not on constantly, it still blinks. Any ideas?

Answer:Power light flashing when on.

Maybe you are looking at the battery status light, Check the attached screenshot and verify your observation.
If this is not the case then please post a pic of the light you are looking at.

I came back to my computter after a few hours- the CPU had powered down Sori for the long gab, here it comes--

I poweredup and there is 30 seconds of HDD activity (normally 120 secs), the power button light on the front panel is blinking at me (it's usually steady), and there is no apparent bootup. My monitor stays blank except for the "On Screen Display" setup menu. Keyboard inputs have no effect, like Cntl/Alt/Del achieves nothing. No F5 or F8 to safe mode.

My digits are crossed that Disaster may not have struck, cuz:

3 hours before it auto-powered down, i had upped the display to just 1024x768 from 800x600, using the same Nvidia "optimal" refresh rate, and used it for an hour with no apparent problems.

Both my monitor, a Princeton Ultra 73e 17" CRT, and video card, a Nvidia/Jaton GeForce2 MX400 3D, claim to easily handle that measly 1024x768 rez. Everything is 3 years old, tho 'should' have many hours left.

I haven't yet swapped monitors/cpus, cuz that is going to be a lousy dismemberment of my wall cabinets. Anyone have an idea about the blinking power light on the CPU. {i fear the worst, but i'm a pissimist}

Your probably going to have to open up your case. Are the fans spinning? Also, you may have to try a different cpu.(I know you dont want to) If it works with another cpu, then you know. If the fans arent spinning, i would try new ones. Swapping Power supplys if available. If all else fails, im thinking your mobo died.

first of all, i use a powerstrip for my computer. on this powerstrip i have just my little speakers and my alarm clock hooked up. i got home today and i unplugged everything to bring it into another room. (because i had just reformated it and my linksys wireless wasnt working and i was gona call them, anyways...) i pluged the power cord right into the wall, pressed the power button, and no go. i checked the cord and it was pluged in, then i noticed the power light (right under the cord connection in the back) was flashing (not rapidly, like once a second, idk if that matters). i brought it back into my room and pluged it in where i always had and it still wouldnt power up. the only thing i can think of is that my powersupply might have got a surge, so before i buy one, i thought there might look into other possible answers. any suggestions would be appreciated! thanks  notes: the computer was off when i unplugged iti dont know anything about power supplies. hahaif u need any info on it though i can provide it (i do know where that is)

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

Answer:No Power, Blinking green light on power supply and motherboard

Sounds like a Power Supply problem.

I bought my XPS8900 a couple weeks ago, and immediately upgraded the memory to 32GB.
Everything worked fine, but I then decided to upgrade the video card to an EVGA GeForce GTX970 SSC.
This card requires both a 6 and an 8 pin power connector which the stock Dell PSU doesn't provide. So rather than return the video card, I upgraded the PSU to a Corsair CX750M, which I've read other XPS8900 users have had success with in this machine.
As others have reported, this PSU is a tight fit, but I was able to get it installed. As soon as I powered it on, my problems began.
The case and CPU fans spin, I can hear the HDD spinning up, and I can open and close the dvd tray. So I know the PSU is at least providing some power. But I get no video, and the power indicator on the top of the case flashes an amber pattern.
I've tried reverting back to the stock dell PSU and video card, but still have the exact same issue.
I've also tried unplugging the power cable and holding the power button for 30 sec. But still, the power light flashes the amber pattern.
I know there are no beep codes for the XPS 8900, and that the power light's amber flash pattern is used instead to diagnose the issue, but I haven't been able to locate any reference to what the patterns indicate.
The power indicator flashes a 2 - 7 pattern, and repeats.
Does anyone know what this means?

Answer:XPS 8900 Flashing Power Light

I had ripped everything out with no luck. Well, everything except the upgraded memory. It had been working, so I didn't think it would be necessary to remove it. But I was wrong.
I reverted back to the stock memory and the blinking amber light problem went away!
Then I re-installed the new memory, and it also worked!
So I guess it was just that the memory needed to be re-seated.
Not sure if the 2 - 7 pattern means "Memory issue", but that would be my guess.
Since the XPS 8900 doesn't support beep codes, I hope Dell will eventually publish what the flashing light patterns mean.

Can anyone tell me what's going on with my monitor?
I have an HP Pavilion M70 monitor.
My power light keeps flashing and there's a clicking
sound (sounds like a relay clicking). Pressing the power
button or any other button does nothing.

Answer:Power light on HP Pavilion M70 keeps flashing

Sounds like a power supply shutdown. It happens when there is a major component failure which causes the power supply to keep resetting and trying again (the "clicking" you hear)

Needs servicing or scrapping.
Monitors are usually not often worth fixing these days, unless it is very minor (and that does not sound minor)

Battery/mains light which is normally either red needing battery charge or green when fully charged has suddenly started flashing red.
Any suggestions please

Answer:Asus lap top power light flashing red

Whats the power level showing on the laptop, just using the battery. Then check with power lead to the mains connected.
You might find that a possible check, is to run the battery down, then try a full
recharge. If this doesn't improve the situation, then a new battery might be required, or alternatively it might be something else, which another member might know about.

As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?

I just bought a M100 laptop a few weeks back and it's been fine. The other day I was fiddling with the Toshiba Password Utility which I ran from within XP. I set a password on it for what I think was the power on function. I then restarted the machine and lo and behold it no longer boots.

When I turn it on, the power light (2nd from the left, between the AC-in and battery) turns on green as normal for a split second, then flashes orange in a steady on off pattern. There is no display, no hard disk activity, and it won't power off unless I hold the button for 10 seconds. The fan also seems to blow on high speed straight away, which doesn't normally happen.

I've tried it with and without battery, without hard drive, without RAM and without cmos battery. Same problem every time! I can't even get to the TOSHIBA boot splash screen.

Someone pleeease help me. I'm at a loss as to what else it could be. Also, no-one on the net seems to have reported this problem before.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

More details: The capslock button light doesn't respond but the FN key light does. Pressing any button on the keyboard results in a slightly delayed beep.

Answer:M100 - Flashing power light (not ac or battery).

Well, first of all the Toshiba Password Utility allows you to set the two levels of password security ? user password and supervisor password. This feature prevents unauthorized access to your computer.
Which password did you set?
As far as I know there are two ways to start the computer:
Insert a password token before you turn on the computer. The computer will start normally, without displaying a password prompt or enter the password manually.

Furthermore the second light from the left side is a power indicator. It glows green when the computer is on. If you turn off the computer in resume mode, this indicator blinks orange (one second on, two second off) while the computer shuts down.

Well, I don?t know why you can?t boot the unit, but please check also the password settings in the BIOS. There you can try to delete this password.

I bought a computer from quantex, the company that went out of business, and after disconnecting my computer and moving to a new apartment - I found that when I reconnected my computer - my computer didn't work.

The monitor acted as if it wasn't attached to the computer, and the computer didn't "tick" like it usually does when loading windows. The only thing I got was a flashing "power light". The "database write" light was also on, but it was constant"

I think its a loose connection inside the tower.

Hello, I'm trying to figure out if the power supply on my hp is bad or not. The green light on back of the tower is flashing and the computer won't turn on. I've tried all of the preliminary things and nothing works -- the green light keeps blinking until I disconnect the large plug to the motherboard, then the light stays on and doesn't blink. Once I have the power cord disconnected and the main plug to the motherboard disconnected as well, I then have tried replugging the power cord and then replugging the main plug to the motherboard (kind of trying to jump start it), the fan tries to come one (but only for a second, then goes back off, so it won't boot).Does anyone know if this means that the power supply is bad or if something else might be wrong? I'm wondering if the power supply would be bad when the computer is clearly trying to start, but not quite making it.

Answer:no power and green light on my hp pavilion is flashing

If the PSU blinks it needs to be reset.unplug the electrical cable from the wall and the PSU.move the red voltage selector to the opposite position it is in and then slide it back. If you live in the USA 120Vac-->220Vac-->120Vac see the image below.  After you have done this you can plug the power cable back into the PSU.  Connect the power cable to the wall power. If the PSU is still serviceable it will no longer be blinking. Best regards, erico Edited to fix the broken image link.

I have just been handed a computer from my next door neighbour, it seems to be a home build (or a computer shop build) so im unsure of the exact specs as it is not booting, they are telling me that until yesterday it was working fine... but now it will not start..

All I can tell from opening it up is that it is XP, has an Eagle power supply, a winfast motherboard and 512mb of Dan electric Ram..

when you switch the system on all the fans start and the hard drive spins up, but then there is one beep and the green power led on the front of the case goes from constant green to flashing green and nothing else happens..

I have removed and checked the HD wich is fine, I have reseated the RAM and even changed it from DIMM 1 to DIMM 2, but none of this makes any difference..

Could it be a power supply fault or a Motherboard fault?? or even a graphics card fault?? how can I find out which it is??

I have asked my neighbours if they still have the user manuals but they claim they threw them out when they moved in about 3 years ago...

Can anyone help??

Many Thanks

Hi there,My son's computer recently started having this problem in which, after 5 minutes of the computer running, and running fine at that, it suddenly closes down immediately, but yet, is not switched off: the power button which usually is a constant green starts to slowly flash yellow and the only way to stop this is to switch the computer off. Whenever he switches it back on it does the same thing, works fine for 5 minutes and then switches to nothing but the flashing yellow light, we have even tried it in safe mode and the same thing happens.Just to give some info which might help you, the computer is a Dell Dimension 5000 running windows xp home edition. The last time before the problem started, the computer had been left on for around 20 hours, and this has been happening for around 12 hours now. He did replace his graphics card recently, but that was 3 months ago and he hasn't noticed anything wrong with it in that timeIs this easily fixable or will a professional have to be brought in, and if so would it just be worth backing up the necessary dataand buying a laptop to replace it, as he is off to university in a couple of years so will need a new computer soon anyway.Well thank you in advance, just ask if you need anymore information about the computer, i'll do my best. Thanks!

A user of our decided to give her laptop a little drink, admittedly her office is quite warm but personally I don't think it was that thirsty.

Luckily it was only water she threw over it rather than any sugary/caffinated PCB eating liquid though it was switched on at the time.

Dismantled it the best I could and left it to dry yesterday, most of the impact seems to be the front left (hard-drive bay was swimming) so the chip on the far right and memroy in the middle seem to have avoided any water entry.

This morning when i reconnected everything it, farily predicatably, didn't switch back on from battery power. When I plugged the mains in (at arms length) the mains indicator started flashing orange - two short, one long, two short, one long and then two short.

Have had a quick flick through the user manual and the only reference to the flashing orange PSU light is for overheating and that inferes there's no pattern to the flashig, just that it will continue until it reaches a safe temp.

I'm pretty sure the wee thing is borked but was wondering what the power light indicated and then by extension if that means there's any parts I can salvage as spares (like it may denote the memory's still ok or the chip and such).

Answer:Flashing Power Light on Tecra A3X (PTA3XE)

Hm, sounds the motherboard was screwed up. I am not sure, but if you?re really sure that everything is connected well and so on, it should work.
Maybe the motherboard did get a little splash from that "drink-action".

The problem with liquids and notebooks is they won?t collaborate together and after some "liquid-spilling" times a PCB can get a short-circuit from any device which had contact with the liquid.

My opinion: PCB is gone. But thats just a theory. :)

My power light on my Portege M200 flashes amber 10000110 ( or _ . . . . _ _ . in Morse) what does it mean?

It starts to flash when I try to power on and will not finish until I take both battery and power supply out.
It will flash even if I start without battery!

Answer:Flashing power light on Portege M200

When the notebook has a problem with power supply (board electronic), sends hexadecimal code.
In your case there are two problems:

- To know what this code means you must know exactly how to read this code. The binary code must be converted to the hexadecimal code and then you could compare the code with the description in the maintenance manual.
- Maintenance manual is not a public document.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do alone. please contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and let them check your notebook.

I have a lenovo twist running windows 8.1. This computer will be running run fine but will freeze then come right back. It also will not wake up from a sleep at times and the only way to get it back on is to cut all power or hold down the power button until it shuts off. It just started not being able to do some of the windows updates.

Answer:Will not wake from a sleep power light just keeps flashing

When did you install 8.1? The reports show that your OS was installed a month before it was released.

No further info in the reports, and the last BSOD was from Nov 2013.
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

My PC wouldn't turn on on Monday night - just a green flashing light on the front. After a bid of fiddling with the kettle lead etc and moving the pc, it worked. After switching off as usual the same thing happened the next night. I replaced the kettle lead but now it just sits with the green light flashing. I've checked the forums but can't find someone with the same problem in that the pc DOES work every now and again. PC about 15 months old. Has anyone any suggestions (hoping its not the hard drive).

Answer:Solved: Green Flashing Light no Power!

Solved - had a chappie at work have a look and the fan doesn't move. By the way the green light now doesn't come on at all. It's the psu and it's being fixed later. Thanks for looking and hopefully this may help someone else!

Gateway DX4640 desktop froze in the middle of viewing

It required a hard re-boot. Now I get a slow flashing power light. Fan starts but it won?t boot. I tried bootable CD with no success, although the CD drive does spin when a CD is inside.

We tried the following:
1. unplugging power and then depressing power bottom for a minute to discharge battery.
2. pulling out the memory cards one at a time, and then booted with just one memory card at a time without success.
3. removed battery and reinserted after 10 minutes

I would appreciate any advice you might have.

Answer:Slow Flashing power light – no boot

This is a common issue with Gateway machines, it is down to the onboard Video chip overheating and failing, though this mostly happens with laptops!! have you got a spare vid card lying around or can you borrow one from another machine and try it in agp/pci/pcie expansion slot, to rule it out ??

Hi, my laptop won't power up. There is a flashing white LED next to the in jack where the AC Adaptor plugs into.  The light flashes 3 times. The light is not on the adapter, it's on the laptop. I left the laptop plugged into the power supply all day, went out and now it won't power up. Thanks, monks

Hello, Please try hard reset first :  Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for a full minute.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ) and see if the notebook will start.  You might want to take a look at this document: Battery Does not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge. It suggests troubleshooting steps to determine if the problem is the battery, the power supply, or the system board. You might find the answer to your battery/power issue as you work through the steps in that HP support article. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Help! After sucessfully using my A920 Dell All-in-One printer for two years with Dimension 4600 XP, I am now receiving the "printer cannot communicate with computer" message. This change occurred in the midst of a printing project. The power light continually flashes (this is not a jammed, out-of-paper, etc. warning). The driver has been uninstalled & then reinstalled several times, cable & power cords have been checked, unplugged & replugged multiple times. Could this indicate that the printer is just worn out? Thanks for any ideas.

First of all this occured when the electricity went off one day. I had my computer connected to a ups and a safety power hub but i didnt manage to shut it down before the battery of the ups went off so it forced closed on its own. After that the led of the power supply, not the one on the psu but the one which is located in the chassis in front where the hdd led is as well, started flashing and the computer wont start at all. I started turning off and on the power supply button on the psu and i could hear a noise not a loud one like the one you get with a ram or w/e problem but a silent "" vzzzz" thinky. After multiples swith off and on from the psu button the sound stoped and the pc started. However when i shut it down again the noise is there again and now i cant start it again. Now i want to buy a new psu in order to fix the issue but i am not 100% sure if it's the psu's failure. Any ideas if it's the psu or something else?

Answer:Flashing power supply LED and PC won't start

That sound like a problem with psu to be sure get yourself a psu tester you can get a good one for around a 10 on ebay also take a look at your mobo to see if there is damage there also check your ups and safety hub.

I am dazed with this problem. Trying to find the solution on all the forums.

My brother owns a Dell Desktop computer and suddenly it stopped working.

- The Power button light is flashing continuously.
- The green light on the motherboard is perfectly on.
- The port light where the telephone wire goes and the usb port next to it on the motherboard is blinking continuously.
- The processor is not starting.
- If I remove the power cord, the lights mentioned above and same for 15 seconds.

What must be the possible problem.

MAny Thanks in advance

Answer:Dell PC not starting: amber flashing power light

You would be dazed again, because this is probably caused by a failing power supply. The blinking power button is a good clue. The green LED on the motherboard simply means that you have a power cord plugged in... It could be a bad motherboard too, but power supplies are easier to replace and cheaper to start with

A friend says this SYS Technology, Inc. monitor was working last time he used it, gave it to me. Does not have DVI, just VGA cable. Model SYS-15L-C-JT, label says it was made April 2002. I cannot find any SYS tech support. I'm looking to see if this thing is dead or if what's wrong is something simple or what. Is there a diagnostic program I can download?

I have tried a few things, like changing the sequence of connections, but it seems not to respond to power button or other controls on front. Each time I plug it in to power source (whether or not it's connected to PC) power light flashes green and it clicks every second or so. There is no picture nor status message onscreen.

Answer:F1904 Monitor flashing amber power light

amber usually means sleep mode. flashing can mean different things. Disconnect the video cable, turn it off, pull the power plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it in and turn it on. Press the OSD buttons to see if you can bring up the on screen display. If that comes, up try connecting it again. Hopefully the PC is not sending out a bad video signal.

So several months ago my laptop started to have a problem where periodically the power light would begin flashing as well as the charging light. The power light would blink a while color that it normally is and the charging light would blink orange. When this happens the battery will stop charging, but will occasionally resume if I unplug and replug the power. I don't think this is a battery related problem because if I try to boot up my latpop without the battery in, it will get half way through then it will just shut off. I should note that when the battery is plugged in I have the flashing light problem during start up but it will usually be fixed with unplugging and replugging the power cord a time or two. This is a really frustrating problem and really limits what I can use my laptop for these days and I'd like to see if it's something that can be fixed at a reasonable cost.

I have a Dell e510 I am trying to fix for a friend. When power is turned on, the power light flashes green for an instant, then continues to flash amber. Nothing at all appears on the monitor. It goes to flashing amber in a sec or 2.

I have unplugged all the components and removed the memory so that I have just the motherboard and video card. I have replaced the Power supply. I have remocved the CMOS battery. Still having the problem. Is it possible that a bad or no hard drive (I have the power unplugged to the hard drive at this point). Would cause a Dell E510 not to POST.

Its my first build and I think my motherboard isnt working, but more specifically I want to know why the flashback led is flashing when I turn on the power supply. Power is going into the motherboard; the standby light comes on, as well as the Flashback LED, but when I attempt to turn the computer on with the power button on the case, nothing happens. I ensured both the ATX power connectors were fully in, everything is connected, RAM is in, but the computer will not boot. Also, I might have have connected the power to the case in at the opposite ends (ground to power and power to ground), but it has been reversed, and if that is the problem, would I have to replace the case or the motherboard?

I had it plugged into a cheap surge protector, but I don't trust it.

When I plug it in, directly to the wall socket, the green LED on the back of the power supply just flashes constantly. But when I try to turn the computer on, absolutely nothing happens.

I tried a new power cord with no luck...same thing.

Might there be a reset switch in the power supply, or does this flashing green light mean that it is dead.

Thanks...I appreciate your help

Answer:Lenovo B590 Laptop Power Light Flashing Orange

Good day and welcome to the community.
Please have a look at page 7 of your B590 User Guide:
for a description of the color / blink 'codes'.
Basically, a slow orange blink means that the battery is between 5 and 20% charged (and charging). It should change to a slow green blink at 20%.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hello, Last month a message from lenovo power manager software pops up on the laptop, saying something like my power adapter needs to be replaced it is not providing enough. It continued to work for a few days before stop charging at all. When I plugged in to AC power, my Yoga would start charging for 2 seconds and stop. If I took out the plug and reconnect, it just did the same and not charge. While plugged in, the laptop charging icon disappears after the 2 initial seconds and the power light on my pc flashes steadly on/off amber. I managed to order this power adapter here before out of battery. When I received the adapter my Yoga started charging again with no problem. The next day however, my screen went black and stop working. Warrenty out dated, so I openned the machine and found a loose screw from the fan, put it back and by magic the screen is working again. The next day I plug in my laptop, let it charges for a few hours. When I turn it on the charging icon disappears again. Same thing as before, not charging with flashing amber light. I noticed that when unplugged, the light would go to solid white like normal. So I have 70% battery left before I feel like just throwing this thing in the trash! I couldn't find anybody with the same problem. I was wondering if updating the BIOS could help but when I tried a message came up "Please plugin and try again", Great...! Someone please help!

Answer:Yoga 2 13 - stopped charging - power light flashing amber

Hi pjz,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I would suggest try isolating if Battery or AC is causing this problem.
First is to try removing the battery on your Yoga
Here's is a simple guide.
Now while there is no battery Try plugging your adapter and try turning the computer ON.
It should power up using only the AC adapter.
If it did not.
Your problem lies with the the power System, COuld be the charging port. Try observing the Port or follow the wire that runs to it.
If the computer power up without the Battery in it, without any problem. This is a problem with your battery.
Let me know your findings

The LED provides an error which can be read by an Toshiba ASP technicians.

I have a problem with the power supply to my Toshiba Satellite A10. Sometimes, after the computer has been on for a while, I get a problem with the power. The "power cable connected"-LED will start flashing and shortly after, the computer just dies.

It may also have time to go into a lower energy consuming state before it does. When this has happened once, it will most likely happen also when I reboot the computer, but after a much shorter while. WXP wont even have time to start up. If I pause to select boot source, the problem will occur anyway, so it is not software. It should also be noticed that when the computer is not off, the "power connected"-LED is lit correctly.

I know that my battery is not so good. Fully loaded, the computer can run for perhaps 3 minutes with only the battery. I know that I have to have a battery connected even if I am using the power cable, but this problem of mine occurs anyway. Could the battery be bad enough to not even allow me to use the computer with a cable?

It should be added, that sometimes I can use the computer for very long periods without this problem occurring. I also have an issue with the battery not being properly in physical contact with the pins on the computer, but that is not the problem here since I have the same problem with the battery hatch removed and me holding the battery in place.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Satellite A10 dies after power supply LED start flashing

You description is very long and detailed and it?s still not easy to say what?s wrong.
Usually the DC-In indicator glows green when the DC power is supplied fro the AC power. If the adaptor output voltage is abnormal or if the power supply malfunctions, this indicator flashes orange.

So I think either your AC adaptor malfunctions or there is something wrong with the power supply electronic on the motherboard.

Hello guys i hope someone can help me. My desktop stoped working and it showed me the amber power light.
First i cleaned the inside of the desktop from dust. I checked the battery it was fine ( 3V as indicated) then i checked rams. Also fine. Checked the video card also fine. Then i figured maybe it's the power supply. I jumped it and it worked the fan works and most of the outputs are fine. Then i tried to plug only the 24pin conector on the the mobo , it worked fine the fan kept spinning the HDD worked the cd-rom workd ..there was no stopping. Hi Eddysam,
Please check the power button if it is solid or flashing, is there any pattern for the same. Please check the keyboard caps lock and number lock key if it toggles while the system is turned on.
For me to better assist in troubleshooting, please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your email address.

The problem is in the thread title; normally my PS_SW light stays a solid yellow and I'm able to boot up no problem. After moving my computer around the house a bit, when I plugged everything in the light was flashing yellow and is now unable to boot up. All the build information (including motherboard info) is in my profile. I looked through the manual for my motherboard (available here: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77X-UD5H (rev. 1.0) ) and it was totally useless. It does not seem to be blinking in any pattern, just a steady blink on and off. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated--I'm really out of my depth here.

Answer:Motherboard power light (PS_SW) is flashing and system wont boot up

Check inside the computer to see if any connections came loose or unplugged.

My laptop has been distrubing since yesterday. Whenever I put in the power chord, the power light and battery light starts flashing together and the laptop does not charge. When I remove the chord, the flashing disapperas. Occassionally, it charges a little before going out again.  I tried using the laptop without the battery. It sometimes does not start and other times, it goes into the first few seconds of booting (the BIOS page) before going out again.  Do you guys know what this code indicates? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am working on a frends desktop that recently might have been hit by lightning. After a big storm their desktop would no longer power on. Now, I am no stranger to computers. I unplugged the motherboard main connector and I get a solid green light when I plug the psu in. Plug the main connector back in and plug the psu in I get blinking light again. So either its the PSU or mainboard. Im thinking psu since usually that is what goes first, but at the same time I am leaning towards mainboard. what do you all think? On another note, Are these boards proprietary? I have a few standard ATX PSUs I could test my theory with but not if I have to rewire them.

I have 2 neon lights (red and blue) but cvan only fit the blue one in at the bottom. I found a place at the top of the tower which is about 3 cm away from the power supply and I asked one of my friends should I put it there and he said yes no probs but then another frind said that it most likely will damage the power supply.

btw the neon is a cold cathode red.

Can I put the neon there?

Answer:Can I place a neon light near the power supply?

theres no way you can damage your PSU, even a direct short most if not all PSU's are thermally protected, and for short circuits

System was working fine. Just took it out and dusted out the guts - buttoned it back up and now it does that pulsing light, fan thing. Already tried reseating the connectors and boards - checked open sockets to see if some dust got in them - redusted - still same problem. No boot, no nothing... just pulsing light and fan. bTw... light on motherboard flickers. Never saw that before. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a problem with flashing screen on the power supply in Lenovo G50-30. Everything happens only when the battery level falls below 100% and connected power supply. This problem does not occur when working on the battery itself or when the battery is 100% charged. This flashing is not very clear but on a white background the screen brightness is slightly flickering.

I have a satellite A105-4054, which has given excellent service. Yesterday, the power light started flashing amber and stopped charging the battery. I had a second freshly charged battery, which I used instead and the power light still flashes amber.

I checked the Original Toshiba battery charger, which came with the unit, with a voltmeter and it shows 15 volts, which is correct. The laptop will boot normally with a freshly charged battery, but it will not charge when plugged in, and the power light flashes amber continually. If I remove the battery and leave the laptop plugged in, the power light flashes amber continually, and nothing happens (no power up). I would be happy to just run the laptop on AC, but that is not possible, right now

The toshiba power utility system tray icon, when the laptop is booted up on the fresh battery, flashes back and forth between charging and battery, and the battery does not seem to charge. Previously, the power utility would show AC power continuously when the unit was plugged in and the power light would stay blue.

I really like the laptop, since it has given superb service, and would like to keep it. Any reasonable solutions, please?

Thanks guys (and gals)!

Answer:Re: Satellite A105 - power light started flashing amber/battery not charging

On this virtual way nobody can say for sure what the problem is but after reading your detailed posting I think there is problem with power supply electronic placed on the mainboard. Only technicians with special diagnostic tools can say for sure what is wrong there.

In my opinion there is no much you can do about it and in such case whole mainboard must be exchanged. If you want contact nearest authorized service provider, explain the situation and I hope they can tell you more about that.

I just received my replacment AC adaptor. I put my battery back in and plugged the laptop in, but when i push the power button the battery indicator light flashes red four times. There are no lights on. Does this mean my battery is fried. Originally i thought the jack needed replaced, but the guy told me it was just my cord which Best Buy confirmed. So after getting the new cord i have this new problem. Usally there is a battery indicator light on when the battery is in and it is plugged in. I tryed taking out the battery, unplugging it and holding the power button down, but that didnt work. I also tryed it without the battery in. Is my battery just bad? Thanks for any help.

Thank you,

Answer:Solved: battery indicator light flashing red when power button on my laptop is pushed

Try plugging the laptop in and then push the power button. I have had the same thing happen to me when the laptop would only work when I had it plugged in. I had to replace the battery.

My mom gave me a Dell Dimension 4700 computer that was acting up. She said it would turn it's self off randomly and she thought it was a virus. When I brought the computer to my place, it powered on once, then I went to turn it on again and nothing. No lights, no power what so ever. So after doing some research I bought a new power supply for it. I just replaced the power supply and plugged the computer in and now there is a blinking amber light in the front and a solid green light on the motherboard but it won't turn on. I have checked all of the connections and they are properly seated. Any ideas what is causing the problem?

Hello, I the power supply light of my Media Center m1050y is blinking and the PC does not turn on at all. So I tried the troubleshooting sequence posted here in the HP Support site, and after unplugging all the cables and replugging them one by one, it turns out that the light blinks only when the PS is connected to the mother board (the connection is a white, wide plug with about 12 pins - pardon my ignorance on the actual name). I looked on the internet about trying to narrow the cause on the motherboard and I unplugged the front USB ports, the fan, and other "solutions" without any luck. Does this mean the motherboard is fried and either I need to replace the motherboard or look for another PC? Thanks!

Answer:Power Supply Light Blinking When Plugged to Motherboard Only

What troubleshooting sequences did you try......was it this.   Suggestion: get a hair dryer, and use it at the rear vent. See if the light stops flashing. Read about the hair dryer tip here.

Hi, i recently bought a new computer and decided to give my parents my old one. Before doing so, i took the side off and blew out all of the dust. I also took out my video capture card since they wouldnt need it. Well, after all of that i hook it up for them and it wont come on. I check out the back of the PC, and the power supply light is blinking. After some unplugging and plugging in of the power cables from the power supply, i notice the light starts blinking(and clicking) when i plug in the motherboard.I figured maybe the heat sinc had came loose from the processor after reading some possibilities online and figured i could just but some thermal paste and redo it myself. After applying new thermal paste and getting everything set, i try the computer again and its still doing the same thing. Im frustrated at this point because before i cleaned it out, it worked great.Since i was able to narrow it down to the power cable plugging into the motherboard, i figured i would mess with it a little. I noticed that as soon as i started to plug it in the light would blink but when i would pull it out and it stopped. Then the next time it would go further before it started to blink. After removing it and plugging it back in i was able to get it to plug in without the light blinking. The computer powers up, works as if everything is fine. I can even shutdown the computer and the start it up days later without issue. Now for the problem. I was plugging some stuff in earlier and hit the ... Read more

This happens:

The horizontal lines disappear shortly after removing the power supply, and come back when it's reconnected.

Observations and steps taken:

- The computer has been connected to multiple power supplies in different rooms. This behavior happens regardless of the power supply.

- This doesn't start right away when the computer boots up - only after some time.

- It also doesn't seem to happen in safe mode, but I haven't tested it under heavy processor load in safe mode.

What is happening? What steps should I take?

Answer:Computer monitor has flashing horizontal lines when power supply is connected

A system restore resolved this temporarily, but the Windows Update which installed immediately afterwards caused it to start happening again.

I have an Alienware 17 R3 and recently updated the BIOS and the other day I noticed the ?annoying? blue ring on the charger switched off, to get it to come back on I need to disconnect from the laptop and switch off and on again. But several times since it will stay illuminated until I plug it in, the laptop hasn?t moved from my desk and the power pack has been under the desk so the only thing I think that could of damaged it would be this update.
It had a replacement motherboard a few months after purchase but now a few months out of warranty, is it only the power supply or worse?

Answer:Power supply blue light switches off when I plug it into the laptop.

If the LED on the DC plug doesn't stay on reliably, replace the adapter with a new OEM unit first.  If that doesn't solve the problem,  the next suspect is the system's DC jack -- replace this part
If that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard is bad -- Dell's warranty on replacement parts is 90 days.  If it's been less time than that, have the board replaced again.  If you had it replaced elsewhere, contact the repair shop to find out what warranty they offer on the repair they did.

I have a Compaq Presario, Windows Vista Basic, around 3 gigs of RAM.

I recently rearranged my room, and when I went to go plug everything back in for my computer, the power supply light started to flicker when it was fine the day before.
I don't remember this ever happening before; it's still green, it just flickers rapidly and I can hear it.
I thought it was a temporary thing, but my power button is completely unresponsive and it will not turn on.

I have had my power supply replaced twice prior, and I fear I may have accidentally surged my power supply when I plugged it back in.
I would like to know if this is the only cause, I have tried different outlets, and even checked to make sure that I didn't mix up my power supply cable with my monitor or printer, but the results are the same.
Even when I unplug any power source, the light flickers and gradually dies, as compared to going out immediately.

The last time I replaced my power supply was around October of 2009, due a faulty fan.
The time before, was October 2007, when the power supply just shorted out.

This time I am completely confused since it was working the day prior, and wonder if my moving it would have caused something. It seems so unlikely, but due to my bad history with power supplies, I am prone to assume it is the same problem.
But if anyone has any other suggestions, please help.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Solved: Power Supply light flickering, computer won't turn on

Since you moved the computer I would open the case and make sure all the powersupply connections to the mobo and peripherals are tight.

I have to 2 Dell Precision T3600 computers that only power on after the second try.
If you press the power button first time: the power button get's a amber light & 1 3 4 diagnostic get a flickering amber light.
If you turn the computer off and press the power button again it will turn on and work as normal.
I have been able to diagnose that the PSU is the problem.
I would like to know if I can continue to use these desktops in their current state? Are there any potential consequences / risks involved?
Also can the PSU can be repaired? If so how?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Dell Precision T3600 Power Supply (PSU) amber light issue

Manual indicates it may be PSU cable related:

1- Blink 2- Off 3- Blink 4- Blink

PSU Cable Failure
All PSU cables may not be properly connected to system board. (PS_ON asserted, missing a main power rail)

Did you try to reseat the motherboard's PSU cable(s)?

We got a Compaq Presario S6500NX from a friend who had upgraded to another computer and we can't get it to work. It ran fine before he brought it to us, however, once we got it here and tried to power it up it wouldn't start at all.

On the power supply in the back the green light blinks and clicks rapidly when the cord is plugged in, and pressing the power button does nothing at all.

Interestingly, a few minutes ago I took it out of storage, (we got the computer months ago and gave up when we couldn't get it running) plugged it in by itself and it powered up just fine, the fan turned on and everything! So I opened it up and cleaned out some of the dust (I didn't have it plugged into a monitor or anything, I just wanted to see if it was still doing the same thing it had months ago) and, lo and behold, when I tried to turn it on again with everything plugged in, I got the blinking/clicking green light and no power up.

What could be the problem here? I know the whole thing isn't totally shot because it DID power up just fine a few minutes ago. But now we're back to the blinking clicking light (instead of the steady green glow that usually happens when the power supply cord is plugged in). It leads me to believe that something's loose, but I don't dare mess with the power supply box unless I know what I'm doing...

Another question is, if the power supply isn't fixable, would it be possible to replace it with the power supply ... Read more
