I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anyone know the part numbers for the ultrabay hdd caddy so I can move the existing 500GB drive into the ultrabay and fit a SSD? Also is there a way of still using the ultrabay DVD drive through a USB caddy/housing?

Hi,I have removed the DVD from the Ultra Bay & installed a 2nd Hard Drive for extra storage etc.Every so often, & more often than not, it ejects itself. The only method to get it back is to close lid into standby mode & open again.Sometimes it happens on resume from standby as well..? Any ideas on what can be causing this? I had a W510 before & it did similar things. I have also spokne to someone else who had the same type of issues.I think on the W510 (win7), it used to ask to be ejected, whereas on this W530 (win8) it ejects it on its own... Maybe there is a setting to say never eject...?

Answer:W530 UltraBay Caddy

It is an old issue I don't believe the root cause has ever been identified.  Search for "thinkpad ultrabay eject error" on google and you'll see what I mean. I don't recall ever seeing a definitive solution.

Assuming that Levovo still hasn't got a ultrabasy specifically designed for the w520, which is a shame...See, there are plenty of caddies on eBay, like:1. I'm looking for one that not only lives up to the full SATA III potential, but also something that fits well and matches W520's external color and texture too.Thanks.

I bought the first one you listed off of e-bay. The adaptor seems rock solid so far. The hard drive I put it in are giving me some problems though! You can see this thread about the problem in W Series I put a Crucial C300 in it and I am occasionally get some stuttering. But I can't imagine this has anything to do with the adaptor, and I believe the smart people here have already provided me with a solution. I am just waiting one more day before I marked it "solved"

Hello, Sorry for all the pestering, but I was hoping that the good people on this forum could help me out with yet another thing. I am looking into buying an ultrabay caddy to stick my hdd for an old notebook into my new T500 (SSD). What is the difference between the first HDD adapter listed on the Lenovo site and the ultrabay III option? And is there any way someone can confirm that this would be a genuine purchase? http://cgi.ebay.com/2nd-hard-HDD-Caddy-Adapter-For-Thinkpad-T400-T500-W500_W0QQitemZ360198319171QQcm...

Answer:T500 Ultrabay Caddy

The e-bay one doesn't look right. Pull out your DVD drive - there is a piece of plastic that sticks out at the end of the drive that slipps into the machine. My ulatrabay slim adapter III also has that.  The version II was designed for T400/T500, version III has a slightly different bezel shape to match the T400s exactly. It looks/works fine in my T400 - just angled a bit rather than flat.  Not sure what the first one on the lenovo site is.

I've tried two ultrabay HDD caddys (both the official Lenovo part) and both have the same issue.I get constant HDD disconnected messsage from the OS, even when not touching or moving the laptop. The caddy itself doesn't appear to fit well, as there is a small gap between the top of the caddy, and the ultrabay. The part number is supposedly the correct one listed for this system...how can I get this issue resolved? is this just a design defect?

I have the NewModeUS one in my T420, works fine. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle trying to get one on eBay and hoping it would work. I've also purchased IBM / Lenovo ultrabay adapters previously (for my T410 and R40). They work fine as well, but most expensive option sad to say,.

I bought a new HD and installed it into my IBM ThinkPad A30. More room: yay! Then I bought an Ultrabay caddy and put my old drive into it and installed it into the laptop. Now my old drive shows up as my D: drive. And now I want to format the old drive. But Windows (XP Pro) tells me, "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive and make sure that no other window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting the drive again." Hmm. So then I tried this: 1. Go to [Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management].2. Right-Click the disk and select Format. ...and Windows said, "The volume goblinbox (D Primary partition is currently in use. To force the format, click Yes."Can I force the format and still have the D: drive work as a secondary drive, or will the thing disappear? Comments appreciated. Cheers,Mush

Answer:Ultrabay HD Caddy - formatting D: drive OK?

Yes you can force the Format and Yes the drive will still work as the secondary. Just make absolutely certain that you've selected the correct drive and not the primary drive's secondary partition. A possible reason you're having difficulties is that your index service is probably accessing the drive.

Where's the best place to get an ultra bay hard drive caddy for the T420? I know there was one on the Lenovo shop not too long ago, but when I went to go buy it it was gone. I think it's super weird that they don't stock an official one. I can't seem to find a retailer online that sells new ones. I'd rather not buy used, but all the ones I see on Amazon are from sketchy personal sellers. But if I need to go down that route, what size caddy do I need for the T420?Thanks.

Hi, I just ordered my T430 and waiting for delivery. I was wondering if it is possible to use built-in HDD and add a second HDD with UltraBay or HDD Caddy for storage and programs and also add a mSATA SSD for OS installation.3 Hard Drives on a laptop is what I am looking for. I am a heavy VMware user and need to install separate VMs to separate HDDs. If this is possible, is it advisable? Also I would be glad if you can give me some advice with the drives. I think with the 2nd HDD (UltraBay or Caddy) I am OK with 12.5 mm but I just couldn't be sure.

Hello, I recently bought a 256gb SSD and a caddy for the ultrabay slot.  I was wondering should I place the Hybrid drive and place the SSD into the spot it once took? I plan on moving windows to the SSD and frequently used programs/games. I just want to make sure which method is safer. I'm wondering because I might reset my computer since it refuses to download needed updates or it says it has the update but, windows won't reconize it, to upgrade to windows 8.1 then windows 10.

I bought myself a SATA hard drive caddy off ebay (yes, a knockoff one) and put it into the ultrabay with an SSD in it (the plan was to clone my current drive to the SSD and then put the SSD in the proper drive slot afterwards). The caddy went in fine, but now it just will not come out. I push the unlock switch over and try to push the second switch up but it's completely jammed in there.. So my first plan was to take the keyboard off and just take a look, to see if there was anything obviously wrong. That plan was stopped when one of the screws holding the keyboard in place was in far too tight, and they are really small screws. I didn't want to attempt any further for fear of rounding off the screw head. So at this point I'm probably going to have to send it back off to Lenovo and have them dismantle the laptop to get this thing out. Before I do that, does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what could be done?

Answer:HDD caddy jammed in Ultrabay. T510.

Did the Ultrabay Adapter (It's not a caddy!) have the black ejection stub next to the SATA connectors?  If not, it is an Ultrabay II, not III.   The 500-520 series needs that stub in order for the eject mechanism to push the adapter out.  Also, if it is a 9.5mm adapter, the SSD may be sticking up and blocking the ejection.  Do you have a link to show what you got as an adapter?  If the SSD is not fasteneed down, when the laptop is turned upside down to work the eject buttons, it can block the eject movement. If you can work those buttons with it right side up, it might come loose.

I want to install a new, faster HDD in place of the one with my T61 (7659D22) came and mount the original system HDD in an UltraBay caddy. The no-name caddy I have looks a little different from the picture in the manual for the genuine 40Y8746: it has little plastic protrusions under which the drive screws might fit once the drive has been slid forward far enough for the connectors to mate. Unfortunately, the only way I can get the connectors to mate is if I insert the HDD at an angle (as shown in the 40Y9746 instructions), but then the plastic protrusions foul the screw heads and I cannot press the drive flat down into the caddy. Which would be better? Trim those plastic protrusions? Or not use the screws that hold the cover in place over the drive's electronics? -- and maybe dispense with that cover altogether? Or is there something I'm totally overlooking?

Answer:Mounting system HDD in Ultrabay caddy?

did you take the caddy tray off the hdd the hdd when used in the UltraBay does not need the caddy I mean the little metal tray that has 4 screws & 2 rubber rails

Hi, I bought a SSD drive for the internal bay and would like to use the factory drive with the ultrabay caddy. There are several products which offers either SATA II or SATA III. Is the standard drive capable using the extra speed up to 6 Gbit/s? I thought about this one:http://www.amazon.de/Module-Adapter-Caddy-Lenovo-T420i/dp/B00718M8PO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=13620859... My T430 isn't mentioned in the description but I've read the 12.7mm should fit without any gap.

Answer:T430 - Ultrabay caddy with factory-hdd, SATA 2 or 3?

Few are SATA III and its the interface only you'll won't see the speeds of 6GB other than possibly the odd burst of data peaking a bit higher. Its drive specific. However, you still should get a SATA III caddy for it. I did for mine and the price is the same anyway. Note your height though is 430 compatible!!! Assume nothing be certain it is compatible.

I bought the official Lenovo Ultrabay IV caddy for my T440p but apparently I need a spacer to ensure the HDD does not move around in it. Currently there's a 3mm gap on all sides of the HDD. Can someone point me in the right direction? The HDD is a Travelstar 7K1000, so it's exactly the right size for the caddy (2.5", 9.5mm). I tried the plastic surround from the main drive bay, but even that allows a slight bit of movement, which is obviously a no-no for a mechanical drive. I'm at a loss what I'm supposed to use, short of literally jamming some strips of plastic in the gaps.

Answer:T440p Ultrabay caddy HDD rails/spacer

Great hdd you've got.  Just use some dual sided tape and your problem is solved.  Snag a small roll for a buck at the dollar store.  More importantly, why did you spend $70 on the "official" Lenovo caddy when they are $9 on ebay?

Hey, I have the Lenovo Y510P with dual GPU and an SSD. I was wondering if i can take out the second GPU (the one in the UltraBay) and replace it with an SSD caddy to make an upgrade to the storage. Because my second GPU doesn't worth the while, the computer hits up a lot with the SLI enabled and crashes all the time while playing games. Thanks in advance,Tal.

Answer:Y510P Dual GPU, can i change the UltraBay to SSD caddy?

hi Tal,

Adding an SSD via an HDD caddy on the Y510p is definitely possible as another user have tried this already in this thread (note that if the drive doesn't get detected, you may need to toggle the switch pin in the caddy).

Alternatively, if Y510p came with a 1TB+24GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD, then you can replace the M.2 SSD into a bigger capacity (like this item).

Let me know if this works for you.

Hi, guys,

I just received and installed this Ultrabay caddy:

cheap and good UB caddy

It holds the disk very securely, and it fits flush, no gaps, matches the color of the Thinkpad, and has a nice little blue LED activity light. All of this for $12 shipped. I didn't bother to bid, just clicked "buy it now". They shipped it immediately.

I also own the Lenovo version, which has the gap, and doesn't hold the disk as firmly.

There is no need to spend $60+ on a caddy in my view. Many thanks to @OrElm for the heads up!

I received the caddy from newmodeus and I popped in the hdd, which came with W520 primary bay, into the ultrabay.everything is running fine, but the speed in HWINFO64 is shown as 1.5Gb/s. however the HDD itself support SATA II, which is supposed to be 3.0Gb/s. anything wrong with my setup or caddy? I emailed the newmodeus and the replied me that "Our caddy has a pass-through SATA connection. It will support the maximum speed your optical drive controller will support". any thought on this? Thanks

Answer:Hard drive in Ultrabay Caddy shows 1.5Gb/s

Tolgcc: The hard drive caddies are nothing more than a fancy version of a cable that connects the drive to the computer. If the drive is not operating at fast speeds, probably best to go troubleshooting somewhere else, although I don't really know where to suggest. I have an Intel application on my computer called "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" - that displays the SATA transfer speed of the disc - you might want to have a look at that application, and also check to make sure you have the latest version of that application and the driver associated with it. The easiest way to get it is to use the Lenovo System Update tool. Michael

Okay, so I bought a new 96gb ssd for my boot drive, and it works great an all, but its a bit slow, so I thought that I would just buy one of those cd-bay replacement caddies and put a hard drive in there. It is detected, it does fit, and there is a led indicator that shows that its powered, but after maybe 5 minutes of continuous use (i.e. formatting, transferring files), it shuts off; disappears from the face of my computer saying anything transferred might not have saved correctly and I may have lost some data. However, I do notice two things, one is that it still spins (so there must be power, right?) and secondly the HDD works completely fine via USB.  There are then two solutions that I have found that get it back to being able to be detected (none of which last more than 5 minutes of use, so that doesn't solve the problem). One is to restart with the HDD out and plug it in when the computer is booted up. The other is to take it out, plug it into a SATA to USB adapter and access it, and put it back in the caddy and it will detect.  I'm pretty sure of the following: it is not because of power issues, as I can run it via usb it is not the hard drive; it works fine in the main hdd tray it is not because my ultrabay is broken; my CD-RW works fineHere are my specs:Lenovo T61P Core2 Duo @ 2.4Windows XP 32-bit 3gb ramKingston V+100 SSD @ 96gbFujitsu 160gb 5400 HDD(came with laptop)eBay knockoff hdd caddy  In short, how do I test out if its my caddy... I'm thinking about replacing the factory CD/DVD drive that came with my W530 and lives in the stock 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy, with a 12.7mm slim BluRay burner (say something like this Panasonic UJ-265).  Since the thickness matches, I believe this is possible.

So, can the factory Ultrabay caddy be removed and completely replaced with a fixed SATA BD drive like this?

If so, is there a SATA cable problem?  In other words, do I need a SATA-to-SlimlineSATA adapter, both for data and power, such as this item (which is shown on the same Amazon page as the UJ-265)?

Has anybody done this?  Do you have any suggestions and/or recommendations I haven't thought of?

thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

I have a P51 with only a M2 SSD and want to install a second, but 2.5" SSD. My first question is if this setup is supported. I did not find anything on the Lenovo (Irish and German) website. Would be nice if someone could help.

Since I rarely use my optical drive and frequently back up files to an external hard drive, I'd like to put a HDD in the optical bay and just swap it out for the DVD player whenever that is needed. My T530 (i5-3210M Win7HP) has a 256GB Crucial mSSD for the boot drive and programs;  the original 500GB/7200 rpm in the drive bay has data files, Outlook and Quicken files, music, photos and documents. For the optical bay HDD 500 GB would be plenty, but the 750 GB is only about $10 more, so why not?  (I'd probably put the 750 in the drive bay and make it the data drive, with the 500 in the optical bay for a back up drive... and this is about convenience more than need.) Best I can tell the optical drive supports SATA 6GB/sec but most of the 2.5" 750GBx7200 rpm drives are SATA 3GB/sec.  (On the other hand, the Hitachi MK5061GSY 500GBx7200 that came in my T530 appears to be 'only' SATA II, and most forum posters suggest there's not a noticable difference.) Of the 750 GB drives it seems the Seagate Momentus ($82) and Western Digital Scorpio Black ($78) would be the top two choices.  I think they're both 9.5mm and would fit. Some reviews indicate the Western Digital is quieter. The caddy is more problematic, as there are so many choices, and many appear to be poorly-fitting Chinese knockoffs.  I'm not inclined to pay $70 for the Lenovo, when the others are in the $10-15 range, but I do want one that fits well and works well and lasts.&n... Answer:Advice needed - optical bay caddy and HDD for T530

try newmodeus caddies. i have ordered both caddy and 2nd hard drive from lenovofor the same reasons you mentioned. sure, after market 750gb hdd is way cheaperthan lenovo 500gb hdd but i didn't want to risk it. newmodeus caddies would be mychoice if i hadn't . unfortunately i don't have any first hand experience with them.but manufacturer seems legit, prices are somewhat higher than ebay options (45 bucks)website is pretty informative... anyway, i would also like to know first hand experienceswith newmodeus caddies if anyone has them. also, newmodeus sells external caddies for optical drives. sure, nothing fancy, butas i said, it seems legit. bit pricey though too. also, regarding your hard drive dilemma,i would humbly suggest western digital (black, stay away from greens and blues) drives.5 year warranty, pretty fast, don't get too hot during extensive operations. have a few blacks.500gb and two 750gb drives and they're working like a charm (knock on wood).

Does anyone know the part numbers for the plastic side rails and adapter required to be attached to a bare CD or DVD drive in order for it to fit in the Ultrabay and connect?  I have a bare Sony DVD RW replacement drive with the correct "notched" bezel.  I know most people just strip off the adapter and plastic side rails from an existing IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad CD drive and put them on the new drive.  But I was wanting a second set to I could keep both the T23's (a 2647)  DVD CDR original drive and the new DVD RW drive.

Life is just one big "Beta Test"Happy owner of a T43 (Windows 7) and T23 (Windows XP)

Answer:T23 - What are the plastic side rails & adapter needed for drives to fit in the Ultrabay?

I've never run into part numbers (i.e., FRU) for the Ultrabay rails and I've changed out my fair share of them.  What I basically do is buy "dead" or "parts" optical drives off of eBay and then scavenge the rails and IDE connector.  I believe that there are at least two very slightly different designs; the thickness of the side rails is what changes.  It's never gotten to the point where the re-fitted drive doesn't fit into the Ultrabay but, depending on the drive and rails in question, there may be too much or too little space inside the bay.  Also, you should be careful when transferring screws from one drive to another.  I've found that on some drives, if the rear screws (the ones which hold the connector on the back of the drive) are slightly too long, then that can prevent the tray from closing.

Hi there, New to the forum, hello! I recently bought a Y500 laptop from Lenovo Canada. I was satisfied with the performance but wanted a boost. I started looking for the removable ultrabay graphics card (GN36) on the Canadian website. I couldn't find it but over the next week or so, all vendors seemed to be missing this graphics card. I called into Lenovo support and was told that they couldn't find the product on the system as well. They said they'd call me if there were any updates...but for now it seems like the product is discontinued. Anyone have any luck getting a hold of one of these? I'd love to run them both together in SLI but if Lenovo has decided to discontinue this...the ultrabay option has lost a lot of interest for me.

Answer:Y500 Ultrabay Removable Ultrabay graphics discontinued?

My understanding is the Y400 version GN35 is exactly the same. If anyone knows it's not please tell me so I stop spreading this rumor... :-)http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...

I've recently bought the Y500 with the dual graphics cards, and I need to obtain a CD/DVD drive. I saw on this post -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Y500-Ultrabay/td-p/1155205 that both parts may be interchangeable. Currently, the Y500 part is not available on the Lenovo store (that I can find), but the Y400's is. Does anyone know from first-hand experience if  them being interchangeable is correct? I'd rather buy from Lenovo then find the Y500 model elsewhere.

Answer:Are the Y500 CD/DVD Ultrabay and Y400 CD/DVD Ultrabay parts interchangeable?

If anyone knows the answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

I have new pc with win7, and have tried to connect a 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 HDD using caddy, thru USB, so that I can copy old files from it.
An older 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax lus 9 ATA/133 HDD connects, with jumper at cable select.
The Seagate, using same jumper settings, audibly connects, and shows up in disk management as "Dynamic" and "Invalid" below, and doesn't assign a letter.
I haver tried other jumper settings with same result.

Any ideas?

Answer:can't see hdd in caddy on win7

I don't know what caused the disc to be seen as dynamic and or invalid but there seems to be a fix of changing it back to a Basic disk.

Now, you can't use disk management to do it because that method formats the disc destroying all data.

I see two methods for keeping data safe.

1) Using TestDisk http://mypkb.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/how-to-non-destructively-convert-dynamic-disks-to-basic-disks/

2) Using a Hex Editor http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=191006

If you use the hex editor method the trick will be finding the correct disk connected to your computer. It should show as a removable disk which should make it straight froward.

As far as I can tell either method will work. I've navigated both programs so if you have any questions--ask away.

A thread that might be informative by reading through comments. http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-support/3906-dynamic-disk-invalid.html

I installed Windows 10 and everything was great - I replaced the DVD  with caddy with inside the HDD and here the problems started because: beginning the disk was not recognized, then I mounted again and had to wait a lifetime before it could be recognized by windows. When it was recognized I tried to format it from windows but I could just delete partitions.  I had 500 gb of unallocated space. - At this point, I swapped the two hard drives putting the SSD in the caddy and the HDD inside the laptop. Windows did not start, not only appeared a blue screen saying there was a hardware failure. When I put the SSD within the pc windows it had been corrupted and I had to reinstall windows  again. Same problem happened also when I disconnected the HDD from the motherboard and there was just SSD in the  caddy. - At this point I put the SSD in the laptop and the HDD again in the caddy.  I could not get  to format the HDD neither instal windows on SSD getting the error 80300024. Once I removed the caddy I was able to install windows on the SSD Now I am very confused because I do not know if the problem is the caddy itself or the DVD controller on the motherboard. Can someone help me?Tha... Read more

Hi all, I had recently upgraded my HP 15-g002ax with an SSD which now has no additional HDD slots.I believe the DVD drive can be replaced with an HDD + Caddy combination.I understand my laptop needs a 9.5mm one, but it seems there are several types of Caddied - SATA/Universal/Unibody etc. Could anyone assist me with a Caddy compatible with my laptop? Current laptop specifications: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/6545564/model/7101305/document/c0431501...

Hello,I would like to ask for support with following issue. I bought new SSD HDD and wanted to use it as drive with system. So I removed the original HDD (with installed Windows 10 and more partitions) and installed the SSD. After that I installed OS Windows 10. This system works fine on the SSD. I placed my original HDD to a caddy and connected it instead of optical drive. I disabled booting from CD/DVD and USB in BIOS.  After restart, the drive was recognized in BIOS (displayed in boot order), but the laptop won't boot. It got stuck with HP logo and did not boot. I realized that when I disconnect the caddy, Windows boots from SSD. When I connect the caddy again, after a while hdd is visible in My Computer (all partitions, but without correct labels), but none of the partitions is accessible. I thought it can be because there is still instaled OS on the caddy drive. So I booted GParted from USB, removed all partitions and created one with NTFS. After that the drive is not visible in BIOS boot order, but if I connect it after Windows starts, I can see it in Disk Management.Because I'm lost with this issue, I tried some procedures with GParted and TestDisk which caused the drive was in RAW data format. Finally I removed the one partition in GParted and after boot, the drive is marked as Uninitialized and it asks me for initialize where  I can select MBR or GPT format. I tried GPT, but it failed because IO errors. My questions:1. is it even possible to ... Read more

Answer:HDD in caddy not working

Hi, Because the old HDD still has a signature therefore you can use a very simple work around 1. Mount old HDD to other machine, NOT HP machine to copy files and reformat it,2, Now put it back to the caddy and machine will boot from SSD. Regards.

Hello,

Can you put a normal Blu-Ray drive, ( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139985 ) into a normal external caddy?

I'm thinking there could be HDCP issues?

Regards,

Alex.

Answer:Can you put a Blu-Ray drive into a caddy?

A Blu-Ray drive is the same size a a non-Blu-Ray drive, so yes you can put it in a caddy

I've taken an IDE HD from my now-defunct old Windows ME computer, placed it in an appropriate caddy and connected it to my newish WinXP machine. The intention was to wipe it and use it as an image and data file back-up. At this point it occurred to me that it would be sensible to look at its contents just in case there was anything left on it worth keeping. However, I'm not sure how to do this, or even if it's possible at this stage. It is recognised in the Disk Management window as Disk03 (but no drive letter), with the right capacity and manufacturer's details, but is marked as not initialized and unallocated. Right-clicking brings up a sub-menu with an 'initialize' option, but I thought this was equivalent to re-formatting it so I'm reluctant to try it.It's not vital, as all the important stuff was backed up and transferred to the new computer. But any comments or advice would, as always, be gratefully received.

Answer:Reading old HD in caddy

Have you changed the jumper on the HD from Master to Slave? Also your ME HD may be FAT32 instead of NTFS. Don't know if this might make it unrecognised.

Hello, I received my P70, and I was surprise to see that the dvd isn't hotswapable like it was with my T510.  I can unscrew a screw, and change my dvd my a ssd caddy but there is one available ? When I bought the laptop, I asked for one.  They accepted my request and send one for me, but I received a Dummy caddy, it's even marked on it, DUMMY    (it's used probably to put a blank when we remove the DVD). I think that the right part is 00NY314, but I'm not sure.  Still 50$ US for that, is't a lot, it will be around 75$ CAN.  I need to be sure before I order that part. Can someone confirm that ?  With a picture will be nice, not that I don't trust Lenovo, but I received a dummy part, so...

Answer:P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

While I can't speak directly to your question, It is clear that hot-swappability of this 4th drive is not a design feature of the P70.  It is a shame that the nod to manufacturing simplification (read: cost & maintenance requirements reduction) had eliminated a very useful feature. With my W700, I can and do swap-out the optical drive for an HDD often to make speedy backups or access archived data.  It is very convenient and helpful. Alas, some would argue that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt attachment provides adequate support for these things -- I'd still prefer a unit with the easy swap option--a workstation is supposed to be all about power and flexibility.   By way of example, Samsung realized its design error in eliminating some features and re-introduced user-removable storage to its latest line of phones.

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive? Thanks,

Answer:Installing HD in T60 w/o caddy

Welcome to the forum! SATA is the correct drive type, but no hard drive should ever be installed in a ThinkPad without a caddy for a variety of reasons. Spend a few bucks on eBay and do it properly...
