ideapad y400 won't shutdown/4 minute reboot

Question: ideapad y400 won't shutdown/4 minute reboot

I have a lenovo ideapady400 that is now almost 2 months old. Earlier today, I noticed that it did not properly go into hibernate when I shut it. The keyboard was still lit up, with no LCD display (including not if I hit Fn+F2) and with the fan at high rpms. I shut it down by holding the powerbutton, and upon rebooting it, it took over 4 minutes to get back to the desktop. It now requires the 4 minutes every time I restart, and it never goes into hibernate with the lid closed (it must be shut down by the power button).Fearing that the computer may be having a serious issue, I tried to make a backup with Onekey recovery, which failed to write a backup (repeatedly). It returned an error saying it couldn't access the partition. I then uninstalled onekey recovery, downloaded it again from the lenovo website. Now when I run onekey recovery it says my system is not able to write a backup.I am now stuck in a tough spot of not being able to backup my laptop and and not being able to do a recovery without losing everything. On the lenovo support site, when I select startup issues, the feedback it gives me is "Thank you for your question. This is a known problem and a solution is being developed. Please check back for updates."Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the main (shutdown/startup) issue? As the laptop is under warranty, should I just send it back to Lenovo?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ideapad y400 won't shutdown/4 minute reboot

hi hansweeks,

If you PC came with a HDD+SSD drive, try to boot into the BIOS (by repeatedly pressing F2 on startup) and check if both the HDD and SSD are detected (if you're missing one, that HDD might be faulty and needs to be replaced.

If both HDD's are detected (or if your PC came with only a SATA HDD) try to run an HDD diagnostic. Try HD Tune to run HDD error checking in WIndows or create a bottable HDD diagnostic (see steps below).

1. Download the the UBCD ISO
2. Burn the ISO using imgburn
3. Insert the CD that you just created into the defective computer and reboot
4. Upon reboot, continuously press F12 and boot from the ODD/CD-DVD

To burn the diagnostic software on a flashdrive, follow this guide

Note:
If you find any errors, you will need send the unit to Lenovo for service. Support phone list here.

For data backup, you can copy / paste your files on a USB flashdrive / hard drive or use this software to clone your hard drive.

Hope this helps

I have been beating my head against the wall with this one.
Just got a Gateway E-9520T for a customer. We spent the last week configuring it, installing updates, etc--but it's pretty much vanilla Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit with exchange 2003. We haven't installed any of their customer applications yet.

During the setup and testing we did everything from leaving it on at night, to shutting down over night, rebooting, etc...

A few days ago it suddenly started taking around 30 minutes to boot and 30 minutes to shutdown.

During the startup/shutdown the RAID array is going crazy. Tons of file access.
When starting up it performs POST correctly, starts booting Windows (2003 Server Logo, with the little scroll thing at the bottom), and then the screen flashes like it's about to switch to graphical mode. But it hangs there with a blank screen for 30ish minutes.

The morning this started we hadn't installed any new drivers, updates, applications, or anything. Just fired the box up.

Gateway thought it might have been the MegaRAID card, so they sent a new one. No change. MegaRAID says their latest firmware fixes an issue that sounds like this problem. Updated the MegaRAID firmware, and it's still taking forever to boot.

What I've done:
Waited forever for the system to come up, rollback driver updates for the RAID card. (no effect)
Booted off Gateway's recovery CD (at their request) and used it to reinstall the factory default drivers. (no effec... Read more

Dear Experts, I was noticing this problem just after my warranty is expired.  My Lenovo Ideapad flex 15 shuts down exactly in every 30 minutes. Here are some clues.Shutdown even when it is in bios, it is not a driver problem. Reset the bios to default but no outcome.Did comprehensive hardware test using Lenovo Solution Center but not showing any issue. All hardware temperature is normal. There was some dust in CPU fan, causing problem to run it smoothly. Removed the dust, now it is running smoothly. But still, I am having this problem.Removed the BIOS battery for the whole night, no outcome. If I put the laptop in sleep(before 30 min) and wake up immediately, I don't see this problem. I suspect this is some hardware or bios firmware issue (i.e probably some internal timer is shutting down laptop and putting the laptop into sleep may reinitialize the timer). Any idea how to resolve this problem? As another try, I want to flash the bios firmware, but I can't find any link in lenovo support center to get bios firmware for Lenovo Ideapad Flex 15.  Any help is highly appreciated. My BIOS version: 8ACN34WW Thanks/Babu

Answer:IdeaPad Y580 automatic reboot after shutdown when power cord plugged in

Hi D3ns0n, Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Auto reboot when you try to shutdown the system on your Lenovo Y580.

May I know which Operating system you have installed in your system?
Boot the system into safe mode and check if the issue is persisting from there also.
Please let us know is there was any issue with the system recently with Mother board or with HDD or any other hardware.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hello buyersremorse,

A few more details may be helpful to the volunteers here in making a diagnosis.
Have you tried another browser? If so how does that behave?
Have you run any anti-virus scans?

Are you able to download and run the following diagnostic tool? It won't fix anything, but will simply show a basic short report of what is installed.
* In order to prevent conflicts, you may need to disable your anti-virus/anti-spyware before downloading and running this.
Please go to HERE and download FLMini.zip Save it to your Desktop Some Browsers such as Chrome will save to your Downloads folder. If you see a warning or something similar from your anti-virus at any point: "FLMini.zip is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous" (or is a Trojan)->> Select Keep Open the Downloads folder ->> Copy and paste FLMini.zip to your Desktop Rt. Click ->> Extract all ->> And extract it to your Desktop Open the FLMini Folder. Double Click FLMini.exe ->> As the program runs, a small window will open to let you know the progress of the scan, and when it is finished. The scan will take a few minutes. It may seem as if it is not doing anything. Please be patient. When the program is finished it will produce a log for you MiniReport.txt Copy and paste the contents of that log into your next reply on this forum.. MiniReport.txt can be found in the FLMini Folder.

* Please delete the FLMini folders from your desktop after your issue has been... Read more

I have ideapad y400 and am trying to dualboot windows8 and linux.  When I press the bios button on the side of computer, the computer cannot find the usb in the boot menu or the bios.  I am positive the USB is bootable because it works on my old laptop.  There is no option to boot from USB.  In bios, USB Boot is yes (by default).  I can only boot from windows boot manager and ipv4 and ipv6.  No usb. I read that the USB may not work with lenovo, but I have tried two USB sticks: Sandick and Verbatim.   I also read that I may need new bios software, but I doubt that because I just got the laptop, and I could not find windows 8 bios update under the y400 drivers. Thank you.

Answer:Ideapad Y400 Cannot boot from USB

Hello and welcome,

Try going to BIOS, turning off secure boot, selecting legacy boot or UEFI + legacy.

I got my Y400 in march and the newer version came out in April with a new graphics card and I was wondering if the Graphics card was compatible with my Y400. My card is the Geforce GT650m and can it be replaced with the Geforce GT750m and are their any other upgrade options for the computer too?

Answer:Ideapad Y400 upgrade

hi EHaese,

 Welcome to Lenovo Community!

The GT650m GPU is soldered in to the motherboard of your Laptop and cannot be replaced.
Replacing it means replacing the Mobo aswell and getting the new one.

The Ultrabay 750m might not work either as Ultrabay will function as SLI and will need the same Graphics Model which is GT650m inyour case. Like in this Post that two Different Graphics will not work as SLI

-As a Graphics upgrade I would recommend the Ultrabay 650m so it will work as an SLI with your integrated 650m.
and for other upgrades. you can check the Lenovo Personal Reference Guide for your model and Additional Upgrades like Maximum RAM,HDD and other ultrabay Devices

Hope this helps,

Woke up today, sat at my desk, tried to power on laptop and it would not power up. Removed battery and ac adapter and all accessories (including CD drive in ultrabay). Held power button for one minute. Reattached ac adapter and tried to power on laptop. No change, tried battery by itself... No change. Tried attaching both battery and ac adapter, laptop still won't power on.There are no light indicators at all. No ac adaptor led light when plugged in. No led light indicating that the battery is dead when I hit power button (always witnessed in the past). I had an electrician check my entire house and wall jacks. I utilize surge protectors and replace them accordingly. Why? Because this will now be the FOURTH time my laptop will require hardware repair. Unbelievable, there are 5 other laptop devices used in my home (none of these are Lenovos), several smart phones, two smart TVs and ONLY this product fails. I stopped taking this laptop outside because of its insanely high failure rate. I chose the 14 inch model with the poor screen resolution BECAUSE I wanted a mobile device not a desktop replacement. It still arbitrarily stops working indefinitely. This laptop was last repaired in September from Sept 13 to October 3rd. That means I had used this laptop for one week before another hardware failure occurred. I am beyond frustrated. I'm trying to remain optimistic but I simply lost patiences. The service depot make excellent repairs and put effort to make the laptop aesthetically c... Read more

Issue was resolved. Will be getting a replacement laptop finally. Keep in mind I have gone through so many critical hardware failures. This message is to just show a resolution to this case rather than encouraging getting replacement units.  I'm satisified with this resolution. The new unit isn't as powerful as my current unit per se but it's more mobile, has a better screen resolution, better battery life, and comes with a new warranty. THANKS LENOVO!

Bought an ideapad y400 in April 2013 b/c it was on sale. Fell in love with it right away -- fast, graphics are beautiful, can finally play Borderlands 2. Fast forward 3.5 months and the screen stops working. Everytime the computer goes to sleep or when I close the lid, the screen would stay black and won't turn on. I try restarting and still doesn't work. I call up technical support and they say to ship it back for repair. So I did. Yesterday, I received my laptop, the screen now works. The Repair Sheet said everything is ok. HOWEVER, everything is NOT ok!!! The entire right side of the laptop doesn't work --- the 2 USB ports, audio jack, microphone jack. NOTHING WORKS. I tried rebooting, system recovery, uninstalling drivers, but nothing works. Called up tech support again and they said to ship the laptop back. The hell with that! I told them if I'm shipping it back, then I don't want it back ever again. I'm done with Lenovo. He says that he's with tech support and is not authorized for returns. The sales team is not available b/c it's after hours, so I left my cellphone number with them and he says they'll get back to me in 3 business days. I'll give them 48 hours and then I'm contacting my credit card and I'm putting in a claim/dispute. Good riddance Lenovo! Now I know why there was such a huge sale for the Ideapad Y400 -- b/c it SUCKS!

Occasionally, when I discharge my Ideapad down to around 30% or lower and then plug it in, it does not charge.  The battery icon shows that it is charging, but the level does not increase.  The laptop runs fine whether or not it is plugged in, and it seems to run off of AC power when available, buut the battery does not charge.  Normally, when this happens, it can be fixed by toggling the battery charge mode in Energy Management repeatedly, removing and reinsterting the battery, unplugging and plugging in AC power, et cetera.  Recently, however, it has gotten "stuck" in this state and cannot charge at all.  I have tried toggling the mode, removing adn inserting both the power cord and battery, restarting, and various combinations thereof. It is important to note that the battery indicator does not say "Plugged In, Not Charging" as it does when set to charge to 60%.  The only indication anywhere that the battery is not charging is that the level simply does not rise.

Hey Community, So I sent my laptop to the depot before my warranty expired to fix one of the hinges that supports the screen broke off. After receiving the laptop, I have had connection issues with my wireless. When I'm plug directly to the ethernet, no problem. The connection was spotty with wifi, but it came and went, didn't think too much of a problem.  Now, when i'm running off battery only, I cannot connect. I tried resetting, but to no avail. Strangely, when i'm plugged in via adapter for power, I can connect without any issue.   The problem is when I'm remote and using battery power, I can't connect at all.  Anyone experience this problem? Lenovo won't take back the unit since it's past my warranty period now. It's a minor inconvenience having to sit next to an outlet any time I need to connect via wifi.

I got my 400 in the mail two nights ago. from then to yesterday, it was randomly restarting (with a few full shutdowns). on top of that, it wouldn't always load after being turned on.
I decided to do a full system restore this morning, and it was working. up until a hour ago and just now, when it restarted both times. something makes me think it overheated (i was playing Dishonored this past time), except 9 out of 10 times i was using the laptop normally (just webrowsing). and it literally just did it again, as i was typing this message. all i had (have) open is chrome). i'm starting to get really pissed since i just dropped 900$ on this, and it's  right out of the box.
has anyone else experienced this, and/or have a fix?
or did i really just get a bad sendout, and i'm gunna have to wait a month for a replacement?

Hi everyone, I'm having an overheating problem with my Y400 Ideapad. My laptop will randomly freeze up for a second, and then the fan will start running at full speed. The fan will run at full speed for a few seconds, and then the entire laptop shuts down. I read that this might be an overheating problem, so I did some work cleaning the heat sink and removing dust but the problem still exists. If it helps, the problems seems to happen when I come back from being afk for a couple of minutes. I've been running some temp monitoring programs and I'm running between 47 - 58 Celcius. I believe that the temp goes up when the problem happens. Any advice on how to fix this?  Thanks,Charles

My lenovo Ideapad Y400 has been overheating and shutting down during gaming. The first time this happened when I turned it back on Windows had to do an update (windows 10) I'm pretty sure this was just a coincidence though. This only happens when I'm gaming though and I can usually get it to last longer if I turn the settings to low. I replaced the thermal paste and it actually solved the problem for about 2 weeks without a shutdown and everything worked fine. Before it was shutting off 2-20 minutes into gaming. Just recently it started shutting off again so I decided to make this post.  Here's what I know:My temps run mostly around 40c when idle and 60c when gaming. Most of the time the computer doesn't even feel warm when if happens. My fan speed never really speeds up before it shuts off (or ever actually) even when the computer feels hot the fan sticks to its regular speed. Some people have suggested replacing the thermal pad on the VRAM. Not sure if a thermal pad is the same thing as thermal paste but I'm pretty sure the VRAM wasn't one of the tings I replaced the paste on.I replaced the thermal paste on everything that came with thermal paste (I forget exactly which parts these were but I could find out if it's relevant). There is no way to increase the fan speed on Lenovo's Ideapad models (short of hitting the dust removal feature every 5 seconds). And It wouldn't matter because people who have physically modded their fans and added new ones say it ma... Read more

So, I bought a y400 back in december in the US and then went back to mexico. Loved it to death but in march the battery charging problem that plagues all of the ideapad series hit mine and I had to do a ritual in order to properly charge my battery. So yeah, I sent it in for repairs May 20th and well, we're nearing the end of July with no signs of the replacement parts getting to the service center.

This is an outrage. It's not possible that they're taking this long to get the parts. I can find y400 models near my house at stores like office depot, and it can be bought off directly from lenovo, but no parts are shipping. They tell me parts have arrived and the computer has been fixed, but the service center people tell me nothing has arrived! The callcenter justifies itself by saying it's an international model but I'm not even getting a replacement model. I bought it on the US and currently live in mexico, but part of the reasons I bought this model was due to the international warranty, which isn't doing squat.

I need a solution to this problem now. Please. Either give me a gift card/return me the money back so I can get another computer. It's been about 8 months since I bought it, but 2 and a halfish since I left it at the service center! Or send me a new y400/y410p. Getting "just" my computer or an identical replacement at this point would be an insult, but I'll take what I can. At this point I would've bought another laptop but I don't have the money to spe... My laptop was working perfectly fine yesterday, but now when I try to start up my laptop, the screen does not display anything. The fan spins very loudly (as loud as if it was doing the 'Dust Removal' function) and the backlight for the keyboard is on, so I know the laptop is on. Also, if I try to plug the laptop into an external monitor, nothing displays. I have already tried unplugging the battery and power and then holding the power button for 60 buttons. I have also tried to boot in safe mode but because there is no display, it does not really help.. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Y400 Random shutdown problem

hi shivarocks,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, are you running any graphics extensive apps when the computer turns off? If this is the case, try checking the temps. (i.e. by using HW Monitor or similar app) to see if heat is the cause of the shutting down problem.

Let me know how it goes.

I got my y400 about 2 month ago, about 3 days before, it shows blue screen. And then, my y400 is not able to shutdown(screen truns black when power off, but lights for power button still on). I have to shut it down by pushing the power button for 10 seconds. Then it takes 4 mins to start up (since this y400 with 16gb SSD, it can start up about 10-20 seconds).
I tried to reset my system back to factory, no matter i use Lenovo OneKey Recovery or Win8 reset, they shows error.
I went to "Computer Management_Disk Management" they it says "Loading disk configuration information...".  Then it pops out a window "Initialized Disk", no matter which way i choose, it says an error.

The wireless card included on your system is average on it's best days. If you want it to connect to the latest N or AC protocol on 5GHz I suggest you upgrade the thing.  I ordered the Intel 7260 to pair with my Asus router, but you might only eed an N card.

I bought this computer around a month ago, and everything was working fine.Yesterday, I connected to my labs network using the gigabit port, and I detected that the port didn't connected successfully, It detected the network but while checking the amounts of packets send and received there was a bogus number, also, when doing a traceroute it sent the packets to an address that was not the default gateway. Though, the configuration seemed perfect. I proceed with rebooting the computer, and then the port worked fine. After being working with a VM. The port stopped working again. And it showed the bogus amount of packets. So I went and try to disable the port. Which, caused the system to freeze completely. After I forced a reboot in my system both the transmission and the connection leds in the port became solid on, even without a cable connected. After windows started I noticed nor the device manager, neither the network adapter manager showed the device anymore. I taught it was a problem with windows, therefore I tried several tools for detecting hardware outside windows (Hiren's live usb) . I even tried a Linux live USB and both failed in getting the information. I set the bios to the default state, but everything seems of having no effect on the port. After that happened now and then the keyboard or the touchpad stop working or send bogus keys. I'm open for advice and thank you in advance.

Driver is available here:http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds103342 When attempting to install the driver the following message is displayed:"No Appropriate Driver to be installed" When I unplug the USB mouse, the Device Manager category "Mice and other pointing devices" disappears entirely. The cursor also disappears when the USB mouse is unplugged. This leads me to believe the computer does not recognize the touchpad. There is one Device Manager category "Other devices" item titled "Unknown device" with a device instance path of "ACPI\FFFFFFF\4&1BC423EF&0" and BIOS device name "\_SB.PCI0.LPCB.MSS0" The computer is a Lenovo Y400 running Windows 10 Home 64 bit purchased new 11/25/2012. The problem was caused by upgrading to Windows 10. Lenovo supported systems list for Windows 10 Upgrade includes this device.

Contact support ASAP. Otherwise they might think you did it. And then it wouldn't come under warranty. If you are little techy you can replace it yourself. But if you make an attempt yourself there will be no warrany.

I have had this for 2 weeks and just in the past few days I have experienced random crashes. It is a Lenovo Ideapad Y400 with Windows 8 (64 bit). Suddenly I was having some BSOD issues (unexpected kernal mode trap, etc) so I decided to uninstall McAfee since that is notoriously buggy (I was not actually USING it, I had Avast installed). This seemed to fix it for a few days then I was getting BSOD along with random shut downs (no error messages, just completely powered down). SOmetimes I can get the computer to work for 30 mins and sometimes it will just power down almost as soon as it starts to boot up. I also tried uninstalling Avast, but that did not fix anything. When I run into this issue, I am not doing anything graphics intense- no gaming, no video. Was there a driver or Windows update that messed everything up? SHould I do a system restore/refresh? Below is the link to the event log and minidump files. Thanks! https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=55BE206AA5386C19!107

hi there,win32k.sys file caused the bsod. i've found out that one of the microsoft update may cause the problem.the issue may be an incompatibility between the win32k.sys from kb2779030, which is a recent windows update, and a driver on the affected systems.can you please check if you've installed this fix?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779030

So I've had this laptop for about 3-4 years, and I've never experienced any problems with it until two days ago. Since then it's been shutting down suddenly on its own without any notice. Things got much worse today to the point where it either shuts down immediately after I try turning it on, or it shuts down within minutes after it has been turned on. I've been looking online and seeing that a lot of people say this may due to core temperature, which I have been observing since yesterday, and it doesn't seem to be temperature. The laptop did turn off once yesterday during gaming, but I was able to turn it back on, and had no problem playing games after that. However, today I was not gaming, and didn't have much things opened, it just keeps on turning off. I don't know if it's just because the computer is old and needs replacement that it's been acting like this for the past two days. I'm hoping that there's something that I can do to extend its lifetime for a bit longer.

Hi, I plan to purchase a Lenovo IdeaPad Y400 in a few days time. The shop I am purchasing this from has the following specifications:- i7-3630QM- Windows 8- 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM- 1TB SATA HDD (5400rpm)- Modular DVD reader/writer- NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GDDR5 2GB I noticed that the HDD is definitely going to be too slow for me, and I thus plan to upgrade it, among other things. I will be performing the following upgrades:- Windows 8 Pro- 16GB RAM (DDR3 1600MHz CL11 Crucial 8GB x2)- CRUCIAL 128GB M4 MSATA- WD 2.5'' SATA 7200 /16MB Black 750GB Will my upgrade plan work with the Y400? Thanks.

Hello, this morning my 2 year old Y400 informed me that my hard drive is failing. I suspected this might happen a while back when I started having abysmally slow data transfer (regularly down to few dozen to several hundred KB/s, 100% active time). For the time being, my computer seems to be running as it should (at least it was while I was making backups of my files) but I know I'll be needing a new HDD sooner rather than later. So anyway, I began looking around online for a replacement drive for my current 1TB, 5400 rpm unit (part number 16200208) and came across this one on Amazon: 7200rpm-Laptop-Drive-Lenovo-IdeaPad. The seller says its compatible with my Y400, but I'd rather not simply take their word for it. I don't know enough about the details of computer parts to tell for myself whether it would work for me or not, there are too many unknown unknowns. Can you folks help me out? If that one I found won't work, is there something that you might recommend as factory replacement/minor upgrade? Thanks in advance! -DG

Back when I first bought my y400 in June, I didnt buy the SLI model because I assumed (and it was advertised) that I could later buy the Ultrabay graphics. 9 months later, It still isnt availible. I've spoken to several reps that all said to wait a month (first time in November, second in January, third just a few weeks ago).  I found a card that could be used in the y400 (link), but this ultrabay has the 650m in it. From what I have gathered from several different sources is that this ultrabay is not compatibile with the 750m model. There is also a 750m y500 ultrabay, but this is too big to fit in the 750m port. I also understand that the current y410p has a gt 755m. If they make an ultrabay with that card in it, will it be compatible with my 750m? I've scoured the web searching for the 750m ultrabay, but alas, I have not found it.  So, does anyone know of when (or where) the card will be availible?  Lenovo y400 (June 2013)-i7 quad-8gb ram-(1x) gt 750m 2gb gddr5-1tb HDD

I have been on the line with Lenovo for 3 hours. 3. HOURS. with not a single person being able to answer whether this: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/itemdetails/0C65964/460/continueUrl#ReviewsIs compatible with a Y400 14". Some have said it is, some have said it isn't (people from the internet). I figured I'd contact Lenovo to get a straight professional answer. Instead I got bumped from person to person who had no idea. Some even saying "oh the ultrabay was discontinued." There's not even an email for me to contact. I want a simple answer from these people of whether that GPU will work on a Y400 or if Lenovo blatently lied about the ultrabay. My own screensaver even advertises that I can put in an SLi GPU into the ultrabay and now they're backing out. Garbage company, with garbage employees. I doubt the company will ever care they lost one customer, but hopefully they recognize what a trash system they have.

So were I am coming from is that I got the y400 as opposed to a desktop so that I could play games while I was away from the house. The situation is that when I have the power cord connected whether I am connected via wifi or ethernet I am getting around 60-70+ frames per second, but when I unplug the power cord the highest frame rate I have seen so far has been 14 frames per seccond with the ethernet with it being as low as 2 frames per second.  From my reading a few people have said that they had like situations and it was resolved by deleting the lenovo power management software, in which I saw no change when attempting that.  is this normal? and if so is there a way to change it? I cant choose mobility over performance when it is this drastic and may need to go another route in computing. thank you for your time,Jay

My lenovo Y500 is  months old. There was a sudden increase in BIOS time (checked it using task manager>start up) from 4.3 seconds to 17seconds. I have no clue as to why. I even restored the system to factory settings but it didn't help. I would like to know why and a possible solution for the same.

Answer:Ideapad Y400 frame rate drastically different when plugged in

hi aadithya92,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

You might be reerring to the "Last BIOS Time" on the upper right hand side of the startup tab under task manager where it detects your boot-up time from the moment you press the power button until you get to the desktop screen. If you get 17secs, then this OS feature is accurate.

Hello, My Y400 has a video card problem. It divides the screen in several parts (I see 8 sections) and makes the laptop unusable. It has been confirmed that it is a hardware problem, video card chip has to be the culprit. I wonder, if I purchase an ultra bay video card and intall it properly, will the laptop work normally? Is it possible to disable the onboard video card and let the system use only the ultrabay one? Thank you in advance.

You're best bet is to ring Lenovo and maybe get the laptop repaired, check to see if you have warranty.

I discovered back in August that when lifting the monitor up, the bottom chasis was separating from the top. Upon further investigating, I found out that a small silver barrel used as leverage to prop the monitor open had completely SHATTERED. Furthermore, this barrel also served as a "nut" for the bottom screw to attach the bottom chasis to the top. The material has the consistency of nickel and it astonishes me that Lenovo would use such soft metals at a point where there would be the most structural stress. So I've been researching this issue and it seems that it's ONLY the left hinge that has everyone's laptop in a bind. The problem with mine is that it's is a few months removed from warranty. Prior to purchasing this laptop, I had done a load of research on it and I do not recall this issue coming up. But now that it has happened, it seems to have happened abruptly to a lot of customers. I've noticed that the posts have been popping up consistently since June, July, August, Sept, and now. What I want to know is if anyone has gotten this common issue fixed? And if so, was it under/out of warranty? And if it was out of warranty, did it cost anything? I certainly don't want to pay for a fix since I truly believe it is a design flaw. I also don't believe it's customer induced since it's NECESSARY TO OPEN THE MONITOR TO USE THE KEYBOARD. The laptop has been subjected to NORMAL USE and it has never been dropped on the ground nor seen agressive movements. An... Read more

I also bought a y400 and now realize that the locked bois is extremely annoying.  The severe power management provides decent battery, but unfortunately cripples the gpu.  I wish I could downclock the cpu and allocate some more power to the gpu.  The current power management provides too much power to the cpu so the gpu downclocks to 135 MHz. Unfortunately this tweak is controlled by the bois.

Now every I boot the computer it says it will "restart automatically in one minute" (both safe and normal mode)OS is VistaAV is MSEAdvanced Boot options does NOT give me "Repair you computer" optionI do not have the Windows installation disk, although it might be possible to find with a lot of hunting. Please help!(As an aside, the reason I went to my nephew's computer was to check on the router... On my laptop my Symantec Endpoint Protection was giving me popups that it a "port scan attack is logged" coming from the router. Since it was being blocked I figured I would use the other computer to view router's admin page.)

Answer:Sirefef (one minute reboot)

Update:
I booted to safe mode and brought up the task manager with a CTRL-ALT-DEL at the first opportunity. I used the processes tab to locate the MSI process and ended it. This allowed me to run DDS and GMER to get the following logs.

I have a several month old Dell Dimension 4600 running WinXP Home, with dual monitors, which runs great, I'm happy. If I have to reboot for some reason, everything shuts down fine, but system shows the F2/ F12 screen briefly, then goes to black screen with the underline cursor
for 5 minutes! After 5 minutes, the HD kicks in, XP loads normally and everything runs fine. Scanning through the various BIOS setup items, Fast Boot is on, system is set to boot from C: first, then CD; and there dont seem to be any "weird" or obviously wrong settings of any kind. Any suggestions?
I have also run msconfig and gone though turning off start up programs, etc. but once loading XP begins, everything runs fine, just takes 5 minutes to start...

My Y400 laptop can no longer even get past the "lenovo" screen at startup. No loading circle at the bottom, no start screen, no options to access the BIOS or recovery options, nothing. Tried the normal power button, tried the Novo/OneKey button on the side. Same result. The only thing I can seem to do is CTRL+ALT+DEL, which just causes the screen to turn off for two seconds before turning back on with the same "lenovo" screen. I can also use the Fn+Space function to change the backlit keyboard lighting and Fn+F2 to turn the display on and off. Otherwise, I can't seem to do anything else. This is not a hard drive failure, as I duplicated the same result with another drive and did not get the "Windows not detected" or such and such screen for the other drive. Please reply as soon as possible with help. Thank you kindly.

I just bought one of these Dell D630 laptops which are coming off lease (32 bit, 2gb ram, XP Professional)

The issue is that this machine takes right around ten minutes to shut down. I ran a number of tests and everything came out fine:
Memtest86+ ok (I only ran it an hour, but no errors. I'm running the native diagnostics now, and it's testing memory)
SpinRite: perfect
System file check: no corrupt files
It's fully updated.

So I'm guessing there's some process running which is causing this, but I don't know how I would determine that since the shutdown process gets to the point where all the icons on the desktop have disappeared, so I can't get a task manager running to see what's really going on. But the wallpaper stays up for ten minutes, and then finally the little fanfare plays and it goes blue and says it is logging off and it seems to shut down normally from then on.

So I need to determine how I might get this machine to not get stuck on the Wallpaper and shut down normally.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi, I'm not having much luck with another post here having shutdown problems.
They can be a pain but here goes.
Memtest should run for about 8 passes - overnight even better.

In Task Manager - shutdown one program at a time - then shutdown the Pc.

This happens periodically without warning. I have ran my Antivirus scans in Safe Mode and in regular mode. I also have Malware-Bytes installed and ran a quick scan and a Full System scan and have found nothing out of the ordinary. Also, for some reason I see "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601" at the bottom right corner of my screen. Could this be causing the problem? How do I get rid of that and how do I fix the shutting down problem? I just installed CPUID HWMonitor so I can check my temps the next time that happens but I'm running pretty cool at the moment. Help me please...

Also, I have 2 video cards installed but this was happening before I installed the second video card.

Just this afternoon, I went to use my PC and got the following error; Windows has experienced a critical error and will restart in 1 minute.

Running Windows 7 64 bit....With automatic updates so it should be the latest version of Windows...

My anti virus (Avira 2012 Internet Suite) pops up and states I have 2 viruses. But before the AV can do anything (delete the files) Windows shuts down....I finally got into Safe Mode and tried running my AV, while it was scanning I then got a BSOD. Had to start all over again; Running MalwareBytes now before trying to do the AV scan, just to see if MalwareBytes catches anything.

I have uninstalled the only application I've installed in 3 months, and problem still persists...

I have a Hijackthis log if it needs to be viewed...Just let me know and I'll upload it.

Answer:Windows has a critical error and will reboot in 1 minute

when you get the 1 minute warning, try typing from the start menu "shutdown -a" or "shutdown /a", and the countdown should go away, and you should be able to remove the viruses.

Be sure to disable your system restore backups (delete them), or the viruses may come back. Re-enable them as soon as you are sure you have gotten rid of the viruses.

Yesterday, while using my computer, my anti-virus 'Microsoft Security Essentials' popped up stating it had found a virus. Within a second, a windows update window popped up with an update ready to install, followed immediatly by 'AntiSpyware Doctor' and a window saying 'Windows has encountered a serious error and will shut down in one minute' which it then proceeded to do. This continues to appear everytime the computer is started.

Starting the computer in safe mode allowed me to use Malware Bytes to eliminate Antispyware docter, as it no longer appears when starting the computer, however the error message ,above, still continues. I believe the problem occurs only when the computer is connected to the internet as it does not occur if i am able to stop my computer from automatically connecting to the internet upon startup.

I tried a system restore, however it fails and reports a problem with a file in the drivers folder in the system 32 folder. I am unable to interact with this file at all as the computer tells me it is unable to find the source disc whenever i try.

I have access to a Windows Install disc.

Hi guys,

I've had x64 win7 installed for about a month, no troubles until now.

The last few days, whenever I shut down the PC for the night the "shutting down" screen is displayed for more than 15 minutes, at this point I just turn it off via the front power button on the case as I'm afraid to leave it all night saying that as I'm not that tech savvy.

Is there any way to figure out what's going on with the shutdown process? The following morning it starts up fine, and I restart with a disk check that comes up fine.

Answer:Windows 7 x64 15 minute+ shutdown (timeout?)

Welcome!

That is usually caused by a program that takes forever to close. What happens if you shut down as soon as it boots?

Next time, before you shut down, end half of the processes in Task Manager. Be sure to record which ones you close!

If the shutdown is quick, you know the rogue process is in that half. If not, try the other half. From there you can narrow it down further until you identify which program is causing the hang.

Hi.

New to the forum and new to viruses and I wonder if anyone could help me please.

I'm running Win7 x64 and all of a sudden, my PC will not stay on.  Either in Windows or Safe Mode, I can't do anything that takes longer than one minute - it always shuts down and restarts (With a warning when in windows).  It will not stay on long enough for me to do anything but I can't see anything "Unusual" in the process list.

I'm happy to do anything that's asked of me, as I'm a bit of a novice with this stuff but I'm having to use a borrowed PC as I need mine for some important work, so any quick replies would be apprecieted.

We have a Lenovo T440s laptop that had a failing drive. We manage to clone the systems partition and manage to repair a where after the clone, the MBR was corrupted and needed to be repaired using the Windows 7 DVD.

Everything else seems fine and we ran chkdsk to make sure their no errors (it repaired a few using the DVD in order to get it to boot and then ran fixmbr to repair the boot records).

However the only issue we are facing is everytime we do a proper shutdown or reboot, the machine will boot up saying that windows has not properly shutdown and to select "start windows normally". Any ideas what can cause this issue and what can we
do to fix it.

I am unsure if maybe the corruption caused this (as the recovery partition and the MBR partition were both lost). I reformatted the recoveyr partition into a NTFS drive since I couldn't recovery that partition by itself.

I dont have access to that laptop at the moment as the user took it on vacation till next week but was looking into inputs as to what I can do to resolve this.

I also checked the system logs and it shows "windows was shutdown uncleanly" and such but we did shut it down using the normal windows shutdown button and restart button, both of which cause this error.

came home to see windows telling me it needs to reboot due to a recent update. upon reboot I noticed it was sitting there at the animated windows logo prior to the logon screen. the numlock led on the keyboard was stuck so I reset the computer with no change. I then tried safe mode with also no luck. I reset once more and did some googling for quick solutions and about 5 minutes later the computer goes to the logon screen. this is repeatable. i ran a chkdsk /r /f with no change. im not quite sure what to check from here but something is definitely wrong when I go from a 10 second start time to 5 minutes. any ideas?

Answer:how to troubleshoot 5 minute bootup (prev 10s) after win update reboot

Hello and welcome Kevin mate if you can get safe mode which I am assuming of course do a system restore to as far back as you like and then it is just a matter of installing updates until one finds the offender and then you just hide it so it doesn't bother you again. (Right click on it and pick Hide)

If yo are not offered may restore points click on the box for further back ones see pic but I suspect you know about this option

So ever since I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 460, I've been getting these ~1min long freezes every time my PC just finished loading Windows (either after a cold boot or reboot).

What could be causing this?

EDIT: This didn't happen to me with my old Radeon HD 5770.

Answer:Windows freezes for over ~1 minute after each cold boot/reboot

I would suspect a driver issue fist thing. Check here for the July 2010 version: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Hello, have a Brand New Z585 Ideapad - Out of the Box, Display Goes blank, but does not dim all the way  after 1 Minute, - (of non activity)  Does not matter what mode it is in - Balanced/power saver/ or High Performance -   "On Battery" or "Plugged into AC". Power Options : 'Plugged in Dim Display' = none, 'Turn off Display' = none = High Performance mode.Balanced  - On Battery,  Display Dim 5 Minutes.I have determined that it is not dimming - just goes blank, then comes back on after a response is made.-- there are no updated lenovo program revisions, as well as no revison of BIOS that can be found for the brand new Z585 - Except for AMD drivers - which this case does not apply to the power management. It responds and comes back on immediately - by mouse or keyboard - so at least that is ok.I Have read most of the forum - and most of all posts relate to other issues, like display not waking up etc.Z585 with the A-10 AMD 6GB 750HDD.. Default out of box Clean image. All Windows updates have been applied.Win 7. Runs perfectly and LCD is perfect / plays games flawlessly - no problems with the rest of it, as far as that goes.May have to return this one - Although I am not sure if its truely defective or not.The issue is annoying. This one is less than 2 weeks old.Any assistance would be appreciated.

I just bought the laptop 4 days ago and found the battery drained very quickly.  My old lenovo had a battery life of about 3-4 hours and I was shocked to see this new one only last about 90 minutes.  I wonder if it has a defective battery or is this the new standard.

We have a lenovo t440s laptop that had a failed harddrive. We manage to clone the drive but because of how bad the failure was, part of the mbr partition and the lenovo recovery partition was lost.

i manage to repair the mbr partition by using a Windows 7 DVD and using fixmbr, fixboot and rebuildbcd command from the recovery console to get the machine up and running.

We didn't see any other issue however whenever we shutdown the laptop or do a reboot for windows, it will say that windows did not shutdown properly  when it boots back up and to select start windows normally or repair mode.

The other strange issue I notice was that when using the windows 7 dvd repair option, it does not detect the OS installed when you get the GUI box. It does detect it when i did the rebuiltBCD option even thought it corrupted boot the second time I ran the command and to again reboot into the dvd and rerun it a third time allowing me to get into the machine.

Any ideas how I can resolve the windows did not shutdown properly error.

I could reinstall windows but since the machine came with Windows 8 media with downgrade to windows 7, I dont want to use a genuine dvd to reinstall it since i am not sure if it will even work.

People told me to just upgrade to Windows 10 but i cannot do that at the moment for this client of ours that has this issue.

I have a year and 3 months old Toshiba L650-1HM, running the latest Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 and Fuduntu 2012.1 x86_64 Linux, I've updated the bios and every other driver I could find in order to try and fix this but so far nothing has worked.

My guess is the shutdown delay is caused either by the ethernet or wireless boards because while shutting down Fuduntu it locks on the "Shutting down NetworkManager:_" routine before resuming the shutdown sequence.

This happens in both windows and Linux.

Help?

Answer:Satellite L650-1HM freezes for a minute or two at shutdown

How to help when you use two own preinstalled operating systems? Who knows what is your OS configuration?
Who knows which applications are preinstalled?
Linux is not supported at all.

Your Windows is also your own installation. Where to start with our discussion?
Obtain second HDD for testing purposes, put it in your notebook, install original recovery image that you got with your notebook and test t with ?factory settings?. If the same happen again and again then we can say: OK there is maybe some software related issue or anything else.
Happen exactly.
Sorry but on this virtual way it is not easy to say what

About two days ago I've been getting hangups on computer. When I click the shutdown button it takes two minutes for the dialogue box to show and the actual shutdown is a little bit slower. When I startup, the computer it starts regularly and sometimes I can get to the shutdown dialogue box in one second when I click the shutdown button. But sometimes I have a problem when trying to shutdown after a prolong period on the computer. I can shutdown easily using a shutdown program but this is more of an annoyance then anything. I think it's the Iyogi software I downloaded on the computer which is a big no,no. I've uninstalled the software and all it's components. It seems like this company software is more spyware than actual help. I also a did a system restore but to no avail.

Hi,the problem is that some "sensor service" delays the shutdown.I presume the 3D guard for HDD is the culprit, but I have no clues.A technician removed the HDD and installed the SSD, but the HP softpaq wants to install the 3D guard anyway. RegardsDean

I have an hp latop that I have had for almost 2 years next month. Today I put the computer in sleep mode and then I turned it back on no later than 5 minutes from putting it to sleep mode and suddenly I get this random arrow message saying that my computer has ran into a critical problem and that it will shut down in 1 minute and I need to save my work what would cause this type of behavior. I'm thinking about making a boot disc or flash drive just in case of future error. I have included an image http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4...nshot020uf.jpg

Answer:Computer randomly tells me it will shutdown in 1 minute.

Hi,

Does this only happen when it goes into SLEEP mode?

For the last few days, AVG Free has reported only about half as many total files scanned as previously. An update of AVG about that same time contained a program update as well as database updates, so I attributed the change to that.
Last evening, I was editing an MSWord document, but twice I received an error message announcing that a problem had occurred and the program must shut down. I have seldom if ever had Word do that to me before. I finally did manage to get the document completed and saved as edited! Unfortunately, I did not back it up.
When opening AT&T Yahoo webmail, I got a pop-up error message "AI RoboForm assertion failed," which told me to paste its contents into an email and send it to [email protected] I did so.
I decided that was too many error messages in quick succession, so I ran some scans, each time checking first for updates: CCleaner, MbAM (found a trojan, quarantined and deleted it), and RegSeeker.
Tried to access my webmail (to look for reply from RoboForm), but could not access the Internet, getting instead the page "Internet Explorer cannot open this page."
It was suggested that I use my AT&T Self-Support Tool. It checked my system and then said to access a certain help page. That tried to access the Internet but could not.
At that point, I decided to deactivate the connection to 2Wire DSL modem and shut down the computer till I could get more help.

So Windows 10 updates somehow managed to become even more frustrating.

Started up my PC this morning to watch a video. A few minutes into that video, I get a message on my screen telling me I'm about to be logged out and a shutdown has been scheduled for one minute. No postpone button, just a 'close' button. Windows didn't even have the decency to restart, just completely shutdown.

Started up my PC, got back into my video. Few minutes later, I get the same message! This time opened a Word document and mashed some letters into it, hoping that would halt the shutdown (cause I'm dumb and didn't think to try shutdown /a).
Nope! Shutdown anyway, didn't care about my unsaved work! Same thing, shutdown, no restart.

Started up again, opened Word and found no document recovery. asdfgdfg was gone forever...
How ticked off would you be if you were working on a document, went to get a drink and returned to your PC to find it shutdown and your work lost.
Is this normal behaviour for Windows 10 update? It's the first time I've had it happen.

Answer:Auto update initiating a 1 minute shutdown timer

That depends - what OS build number do you have? Use WinKey + R to run Winver and find out.

Method 1.
Step 1. Disable the Automatic Restart to prevent the restarts on system failure.
a. When your computer starts keep pressing F8 on your keyboard till you get the Advanced Boot Options screen.
b. Now, use arrow keys, select Disable automatic restart on system failure and press Enter.

Step 2. Start your computer in safe mode and check if you still get the error message. If it boots properly may be a third party application or a service is causing the issue. We can use 50-50 approach to narrow down the root cause of the issue.

Hi! Yesterday I tried to go to my BIOS in my ACER v5-452G Windows 8.1 laptop via UEFI Settings. Then afterwards, my laptop takes 5 minutes in shutting down (the power indicator of LED though the screen clears in a minute). Same with Restart and Sleep. However, when I try to restart via settings and that UEFI, it is in my normal speed. Hope you can help me. Thank you.

Answer:5 Minute Shutdown. Long Time for Sleep. Restart too.

What crap do you have on your Hard Drive

Hi,I just got my Y400 today with a 16gb ssd as a cache drive. What should be the brand of your 16gb ssd that it comes with? Mine is Samsung, but i heard that someone has a Sandisk one who ordered it a month ago....Does lenovo switch the 16gb ssd to a Samsung one from now on?I also noticed that the transfer rate of my Samsung 16 gb ssd is 3gb/s,But the transfer rate of the Sandisk 16gb ssd is 6gb/s....Does this matter when you use it as a cache drive to boost up the 1TB Sata which has a transfer rate of 3gb/s only? Thanks!
