Z580 Windows 8 Battery Issues

Question: Z580 Windows 8 Battery Issues

Hi! I have a Lenovo Z580 i5, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GT 630M. I was running Windows 7 with good 5-6 hours battery but I've upgraded to Windows 8 (64bit) and ever since I'd be lucky to get even 1-2 hours running on battery. I've tried upgrading all of the drivers on the Lenovo site and the energy management is set for longest battery life, I can't get to the bottom of why it is happening. It seems the only option is to wipe the system and reinstall Windows 8 from scratch but I'd really rather not do that if possible. Any advice?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings! I purchased a Lenovo Z580 laptop and got the hard drive replaced by a samsung 830 series SSD (128GB) with a fresh W7 install, the store put the 750GB harddrive into an external enclosure and I all this was at a very neat price. The laptop was awesome. But for the battery. From day one i had issues of battery lasting only 1.5 to 2 hours on a full charge. I did the following checks:1. Made sure all device drivers were installed from Lenovo website (or from hard drive OEM folder, whichever were latest). I did this first because the SSD had a fresh W7 install.2. Made sure all windows updates were installed3. Levono power management was set for Battery Fully Charged Mode and not Battery protection mode (where battery capacity is limited to, well, less than 100%) Problem was unresolved. I called the store and they gave me a new battery, no questions asked. Din't fix the problem. Then they gave me a new laptop, with the same SSD put in. Didn't work. This was two weeks into buying the laptop. I asked them to put the old 750GB HDD in thinking maybe its the SSD. Didn't fix the problem. (At this stage the laptop was as good as out of the box and I was sure SSD didnt cause the problem). I dont want to ask for money back because I need exactly the configuration present in this laptop, and at the price I got it, it's not possible (at least in The Netherlands). Also, it's sold out. Aside from this issue, the laptop is perfect. Meanwhile, I ran the pow... Read more

Hi, Recently I purchased a Lenovo product, the Idea pad z580. I have a number of issues. I would really appreciate answers. The thermal management doesn't does not seem to work. Firstly it starts up, I see the interface. I can click around etc, change the power options to power saving, balanced or performance, however, when I don't have the battery plugged in,(Running off battery not AC adapter) none of those options seems to actually take affect, I load of Guildwars 2, and it lags quite badly but I get stable temperatures of 62 degrees. I also see that the core clocks of the Graphics card are under clocked, and changing to performance mode makes no difference, Now, If I plug the laptop in, (Running from AC adapter) it seems the laptop only then bumps up to performance mode. Games start up, laptop reaches a max temp of 93 degrees for the GPU. I want to know how I can fix this issue? If the laptop is plugged in, why can I not run it as if it were on balance mode. and if its unplugged why cant I run it on performance mode. (Please not that if I put the EM to performance mode, the needles doesnt change to balance mode when unplugged, it stays on performance mode, but runs as if its on balance mode, and visa versa). Another thing, if I press the touch button (moon with star above) at the top of my laionsptop I get different thermal options, however the only option I can select and that makes any audable or visual difference is the dust removal. ... Answer:Z580- Energy management issues, High Temps and battery issues, PLEASE ASSIST!

Do you have an Nvidia graphics card, or just the Intel HD4000 in your CPU. If you have an Nvidia, try turning it off in the bios under optimius, and see what your temps are like, upto 90c is acceptable while gaming but no higher John.

I've got an Ideapad Z580, purchased 6 months ago. Basically I can no longer recharge the battery, which shows 0%. The PC shuts down immediately when AC power is switched off. The blue battery light remains on when it's running on AC.  Windows 7 comes up with "consider replacing your battery". Lenovo energy management says the condition of the battery is "poor". I've tried many of the suggestions posted here to try and reset things because a battery failing after 6 months (if that's what it turns out to be), is quite frankly poor. This is what I've done/not done: 1. Battery gauge test (Lenovo energy management) - this completed in 2 minutes! (essentially battery indicator showed it was charging but with a red line around it, then it stopped charging). 2. AC power adapter removed, battery removed, power button held down etc. etc. etc. - same result, no charging. 3. Device manager - ACPI delete (I'm not doing this) - how can uninstaling and reinstalling it sort the problem out? 4. Replaced battery with a new one (not Lenovo but said to be compatible) and tried again. Still would not charge, and this time the battery light blinked orange continually (I suspect because the PC was unhappy the battery was not a Lenovo original). I'm based in the UK and purchased this PC from a local retailer. Has anyone in the UK had any similar experiences, and if so, were you able to find a resolution without having to contact Lenovo? If I contact Lenovo (th... Read more

Hi, I have a Z580 ideapad (i3), since I upgraded my computer with windows 8 pro, the battery life is about 2 hours only:  Power saver mode + brightness 50% + Nvidia card is off (instead of + than 4h  with Win 7). And since that time, the fan is always on and the fan control button is not working. All the driver are up to date, i have the last "lenovo battery manager" installed. Do you know if a fix or a bios update is available for this computer?  Thanks in advance! JC

Answer:Z580 with windows 8: very poor battery life

Hi sika95Actually the lenovo battery manager of windows 8 is bugged and doesn't allow some features to work. This is being discussed herehttp://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Z570-Lenovo-Energy-Management-for-Windows-8...The temporary fix is to use the windows 7 lenovo power manager. You can download it from the driver page.Regards

Has anyone who's been experiencing networking issues on 8.1 managed to fix them yet? I have a lenovo z580 that came preinstalled with windows 8I could use wired or wireless connection perfectly on win 8. I then upgraded to 8.1, had so many networking issues I downgraded to win 7. On win 7 it worked perfectly again (used it for 8 months with no issue). Dual boot win 7 alongside various distros of linux, after some issues with drivers at the beginning linux also works perfectly. Decided to give windows 8 another go yesterday. Clean installed windows 8 (hard drive reformatted), networking is working perfectly. Updated to 8.1 and it has limited connectivity on wifi immediately, installing the latest drivers from lenovo website, does NOT fix the issue, (had to use hp drivers to get any internet connection at all.) So with the new wireless drivers it only half works, I can use the internet but I get constant time-outs and disconnects on any website (again everything worked perfectly on win8 and win7), even typing this I'm getting errors as the page updates. If I ping my own router you will get succesful replys with occasional timeouts (between 10% and 20% of packets are lost) I have the exact same problem when using a wired connection. I can see from other forum topics this issue is affecting many lenovo products, and many from other manufacturers as well. Does anyone have a solution? Do Lenovo have a solution? EDIT&n... Read more

Lenovo Ideapad z580 Win10 64 I updated the bios with the private update (I know now that I should have used the public update) Then it showed this menu:http://i.imgur.com/kZaO2tf.jpg Whenever I selected HDD, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds and return to this menu. I fixed it by going into BIOS and changing bootmode from UEFI to Legacy. it booted but now everything is slow. It takes 5 mins to boot up and a further 15 minutes to reach usable speeds (I only have 4 startup programs). I tried changing it back to UEFI and it gives me the same problem as shown in the picture. I tried installing the public update, but it says that I cannot update as the current bios version is the same or newer. I went into BIOS and enabled BIOS back flash, and now when I try to start the public update, it just crashes. I also cannot access the start menu (this problem may be seperate and unrelated) I have backed up files and am prepared to do a clean reinstall of Win10, but I feel this won't work as it's a BIOS issue. The computer is unusably slow: what should I do? Thanks

Answer:Z580 Factory Restore On Battery

hi lepik64,

Thank you for Using Lenovo Community Forums!

The only downside when you lost power while on OKR is getting a corrupted Harddrive and you have to start the  process again from the start.
But if your purpose is just Deleting your data on the HDD and send it back to Lenovo I think it is OK to continue,
In case you that you lost Power while on the OKR process, the HDD will get corrupted together with your Data on it then just send it back to Lenovo.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

Hello, I have recently bought a brand new IdeaPad z580 for my sister and she called me today because she was having a problem with the battery. Before I gave her the laptop I put a clean win7 install on it and manually installed the lenovo drivers. Now what's happened is she charged her laptop overnight and when she started using it the next day win7 gave her the "consider replacing the battery" notice with the battery icon and the red cross in it. So this means the battery is not charging and the laptop can't function on the battery. Now I've searched the forums and came across a few "battery not charging" topics and I've not found a solution. I've tried removing the battery and pressing the start button for 40 secs (what does that even do on a dead laptop?), changing the settings in energy management and re-installing energy management. Nothing works... I think it may have something to do with the BIOS, which may not properly be reading the "design capacity" and/or "last full charge" information. Could my assumption be correct? And if so/if not, what should I do? I mean the laptop was bought 3 weeks ago, it has to be some sort of software problem right? Please help! Thanks in advance!

I have two Z580 i have only had them a few day, so apart from calibrating the battery, as the wear level on both was 7% after calibration it went to 0% , i have had no problems. If you have access to a voltage tester, the service manual describes how to check the battery voltage it should be above 9volts, check page 22. edit : Hwmonitor software below will show you the battery voltage. http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_z380_z480_z485_z580_z585_hmm_1st_edition_feb... John.

Hello, Firstly my apologies for starting a new thread similar to others. I have read a lot of different threads concerning models similar to, but not the same as, my own; the Ideapad Z580, but none of the advice has solved the problem: My battery is failing to charge, either reporting the 'No battery is detected' message, or 'Plugged in not charging' when attempting to charge. When the AC adaptor is unplugged the laptop shuts down within a few seconds So far I have tried: -Shutting down, removing battery, holding down power button for 30 seconds, reinstalling battery, rebooting. -Updating and uninstalling the 'Microsoft ACPI - Compliant Control Method Battery' driver: system won't update because it says it's the latest driver, when I uninstall and restart it has reappeared. -Running a complete gauge reset with the Lenovo Energy Management tools. -Reinstalling Lenovo Energy Management - although I was unable to find the same version so am now using the Z570 software. None of which has worked. Does anyone have anything else I should try? Many thanks, Colin

Answer:Battery Issue with Ideapad Z580

Welcome to the forum! I ran into a similar problem a while back with my Z570.  No matter what I tried the battery would not take a charge or indicate that it was charging while plugged in.  Given the various postings I've seen regarding this problem with the IdeaPads I decided to try different approaches to resolve this buggy behavior.  What finally resolve the problem in my case was using a Linux boot disc to boot up an operating system different than Windows. Once booted, I played with Linux several minutes so the battery would start charging again then I booted the machine back into Windows 7.  Problem solved.  My best guess, there is a bug somewhere between the Windows OS and the hardware of the machine.  That booting the system to a non-Windows environment corrects the problem.

This occurred with anpother Z580 I was using but after days of research I tried many possible fixes and nothing worked.  By chance I got it to start charging again on that computer but now that I have my own Z580 I have this same problem.   First when I got my Z580 the battery was completely dead 0% and not charging (right from Lenovo I can't believe they would send a POS battery) Last week I received the replacement battery and it charged 2 full cylces since then and now it is pluggefd in and not charging.   I have tried all of the possible fixes I tried on the other Z580 only this time it is still not able to be charged.  I wonder if Lenovo just keeps recycling bad batteries to customers.   ps. what is up with Lenovo charging for replacement batteries?  I think they billed me $75 for the replacement battery even though it was dead when I first received the laptop...  They needed a credit card before they could send a replacement battery which is f'ed up.

Answer:Z580 battery is plugged in but not charging AGAIN...

Down to 36% remaining.  Lenovo better help soon or else I will have another dead battery.  I'll be if I'm going to pay another $75 for a battery that should be covered under warranty.  2 weeks and 2 dead batteries on a new laptop?  This is ridiculous.

For whatever reason, my Z580 is getting the "plugged in, not charging". This laptop is 2 months old and is too new to give me this problem. I've tried:1. Uninstalling the  Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery but it just reinstalls after boot-up and I'm back to   square one. As long as I don't reboot it's fine but it automatically reinstalls. Is there an updated driver? 2. Removing the battery and holding the power button for 30-60 seconds, plug back in, yada, yada, yada...and still the same. The only thing that seems to work is to plug it in and then open Lenovo Energy Management and somehow that kicks it into charging mode. It will take a 100% charge. I don't want to have to open Energy Management everytime I charge because its a hassle and thats unacceptable for a computer this new.

Answer:Z580 *Fast Battery Drain*

hi ferdin08,

Looking at the picture, it seems like the battery wear level is a bit high. Can you try to:
1. Open Command Prompt as admin (press Winkey+X, choose Command Prompt (Admin).
2. On the command prompt box, type powercfg -energy
3. Once It generates the energy-report.html file, move this to your desktop and open it using any web browser. This will tell you the devices that's eating up power. Try to trim this down, adjust the settings accordingly and observe if you can squeeze more juice out of the battery.

If you still get the same results, you may want to contact lenovo on how to go about replacing the battery.

Hope this helps

HiI am looking to save a bit by not charging my battery cuz I am using my laptop constantly plugged. Is there some option that would allow me to not charge the battery till it drops below 10%. Is removing the battery the only solution?if I remove my battery and there is suddently a blackout do I lose all what I have been working on or does the laptop save that?Cuz many times when similar happens and the battery is in I can just turn on and continue from where I left, while without the battery I have to turn on and wait for the laptop to start again. Also, can you tell me how much this laptop consumes electric energy per hour?(I figure around 40W,but I could be wrong)

Hi,I bought a new Lenovo Z580 this past June. Shortly after I began using it, a system message popped up explaining to me that since I often have my laptop plugged in, it would conserve battery life if I let the system change my settings so that the battery didn't fully charge -- this would save battery life over the longterm and I would be free to change the setting whenever I wanted to. Well, this has been the biggest mistake ever. I now essentially have a desktop because I cannot find any setting that allows me to change the battery to fully charge (it only charges to 40 or 50%). There isn't any mention of this feature in the user guide materials that I can find and none of the Power Options allow me to change the battery charge capacity. PLEASE HELP! I am stuck with a brand new "laptop" that can barely be unplugged for an hour, and this is the most frustrating, awful setting I have ever seen in a computer. Thank you so much to anyone who can help. Cora

Answer:How to set my Z580 battery settings to fully charge ?

WelcomeThe laptop automatcally changed the setting by the energy management to maximum battery lifespan. To change this, open the gui interface of energy management. Then go to battery setting to optimize for runtime. This should do.

I've bought this laptop a couple of days ago and i do a lot of gaming with it.All I want to know is whether its better to play games plugging the battery in or do i need to remove the battery and connect it to the power directly for longer battery life?Any other suggesions regarding battery maintenance will be really helpful

Answer:Z580: Suggest me with battery maintenance while gaming

hi iamnagesh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

One major factor of battery life deterioration is the Charge and Discharge process.
What I would normally suggest is that of you have an outlet available and you are just playing software games, is to remove the battery and Use it with only AC.
Exemptions are if your doing Very Important Business or Installing/Uninstalling updates or software, because without battery if the AC is unplugged accidentally its going to be a direct Power OFF.
Just make sure that the Energy Management is set to Optimized Battery Health

"Maximize Battery Life generally means Energy Management will try to squeeze out as many minutes as possible when the laptop is running on the battery.Optimized Battery Health means Energy Management limits the battery charge to 60% so that the battery life is not prematurely shortened. My Ideapad Z580 came yesterdayu 5/22. Looks and feels nice and it comes with Win 8. But what i saw was when i tried to switch on the first time with Battery, it didnt come up. so connected the charger thinking the battery might be low (but was surprised , no battery these days come with zero charge).  so started using the laptop with charger,, checked the battery and its says 86% charged and says not charging.  So if i remove the power supply,, the system goes off. Tried removing the battery and putting it back on and has no effect at all. Works fine as long as the charger is there but doesnt work with just battery. Tried the reset option with, removed the battery and charger and held the power button for 30 secs, and that did not help. Uninstalled the power management software,, rebooted and installed again and of no use. Can some one help with this ? should i have to return the laptop to lenovo ? i am so concerned,, i brought a refurbished z580 and now it doesnt work properly on the first day !!! Pls help.Sri

Answer:New ideapad Z580 not working without charger, works only on battery

hi srimoorthy,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Can you try the following:
1. Turn the computer ON just with the AC adapter and repeatedly tap F2 to boot into the BIOS
2. In the BIOS, press F9 to load setup defaults and press F10 to save and exit
3. In the WIndows desktop, slide the battery into the unit and see if it charges.

If you get the same problem, you may have a bad battery or a defective battery charging mechanism. You can opt to contact lenovo on how to go about replacing the battery under warranty.

Hope this helps

I recently bought a new battery on Amazon for my IdeaPad z580.  It's a Lenovo branded battery, not a cheap generic one.  When I plug the battery into the laptop, it shows 69% charge, but indicates "Not Charging" even when the laptop is plugged in.  I also notice that on the front of the machnine, the battery LED fast flashes an orange color. If I use the older battery, it charges fine and no orange LED. Bad battery or I have I missed something?

I got my Z580 less than 2 months ago when I started noticing the issue with the battery. At random times the battery will say "plugged in, not charging" and when that happens the wifi also will go in and out constantly until I try one of the fixes posted on the lenovo forums. None of them have provided a permanent fix. Sometimes the fix lasts for less than just a couple minutes. I will provide any details necessary to help fix this.

Question: Z580 - Boot issues

I got a Lenovo Z580 laptop in 2012. From the beginning I used to get Blue Screen of Death when I shutdown and powered on my laptop, but if I just restart there was no issues. The exception used to vary from "Paging in unpaged memory" to "IQR_LESS_THAN_EQUAL" or something like that, I don't remember it correctly. I used to live with it, but now it became worse and I can't even boot it up. I restored to the factory default image and I still have the same issue. I even upgraded to Windows 8, it worked for a day and then the same problem. Is this a hardware issue ? Disk management shows that the drives are healthy. 1. 200 MB NTFS Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)2. 886.32 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)3. 25.47 GB NTFS Healthy (Logical Drive)4. 19.53 GB Healthy (OEM Partition) I have tried everything and no clue on how to proceed. Once the system boots up, I don't have any issues.

Answer:Z580 - Boot issues

Usually it is system corrupted file/files. Try going to command prompt with admin rights. Type without quotation mark "sfc /scannow". If sfc finds errors and it cannot make the repair try running Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth under administrator rights also in command prompt..

I've had a z580 for around 2 years, and recently the internal mic started going bad and not recording good audio. Because of that, I've tried to use the mic that I have built in on my headphones (which I know works on other devices), but that mic won't work when plugged into the headphone jack, or even when plugged into the microphone jack.  Is there a setting I can change that will let me use the mic on my headphones or do I just need to spend the money to buy an external mic? thanks

Hi there, I have been led here because of a few issues my dad is having with his new Lenovo Z580.  It's a similar story, guy in his 50s gets a new laptop, has windows 8 and he almost throws it out the window, and so we have a genuine windows 7 license so I eventually get that on there. Everything seems to be ok apart from 2 things.  1) The Bluetooth wont work. He has a Bluetooth mouse but it will not connect. Any ideas? I realize that the UK drivers site is absolutely atrocious, I has to go to the Chinese site just to get the WIFI working!  2) Office will not install. This is strange one. I have genuine licenses for both 2007 and 2010. I started with 2007, its what he's used to. It goes through the whole install setup without a hiccup. Afterwards, I'll click on any of the office suite programs, and it will say "installing software" followed by "software installation failed" or something along those lines. Same with 2010. I have no idea what is causing this, and so all advice is much appreciated.  Sincerest apologies if this has been posted before.  Thanks in advance.  Jamie.

Question: Z580 heat issues

Hi Lenovo Community, I recently purchased Lenovo Z580 and having heat issues with it from the very first day. The temperatures aren't extremely high but it's uncomfortable to e.g. to place it on the knees. I've attached screenshot from CPU. Temperatures everywhere are around 60 degrees, but I feel it's higher at the hard drive. Note that I'm not gaming or computing right now, just plain internet browsing. I think this may also harm time to live without electricity, which seems lower than it was said in technical summary.I've seen similar threads on this forum, but I couldn't find an answer. Please help!

Hi, So I bought a Z580 Ideapad a few days ago, and i'm loving it except for one thing thats bugging me. The touchpad. It doesn't feel like it has any flow or as if I have full control. It randomly scrolls and I don't even know how i'm doing it, doesn't move the cursor exactly where I want it to go, occasionally remains unresponive for about a second, and then sometimes jumps around, and i've also noticed I can't move the cursor if i'm pressing a key. I've been reading about a few issues with the Snaptics touchpad but they range from not working at all, to compatibilty issues regarding Windows 8 and gestures. I've also come across a few driver downloads, but they either do nothing, or the cautious side of me doesn't trust them because they're unheard of. In addition, i've read that Win 8 ( which is what i'm using) is new so these problems might be fixed in time. It frustrates me that I love the laptop but the touchpad is driving me insane! I don't really care for the gestures for zooming, rotating or whatever, I just want the basic touchpad to actually work. Is their any solution to this, or is this just how the touchpad is? Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Z580 fan issues

Hi fahrabh,

The first problem is that your machine is not on the list of compatible systems that can currently run Win 10. This does not necessarly mean it wont run it but you might encounter this and other bugs.

It is uncertain whether or not your system will be added to the list so the best piece of advise is to revert back to your previously working OS.

If your heart is set on keeping Win 10 then somethings you can try:

1. Uninstall and reinstall power management software.
2. Try running a lower energy profile, not performance.

I've had wireless issues for awhile now and it seems to be getting worse. I can only be connected to the internet wirelessly for a few seconds and then I have to troubleshoot the problem. Sometimes it is fixed, with it saying default gateway unavailable. But now I sometimes have to disconect and reconect the troubleshoot to try and get some form of internet. Sometimes this doesn't work and I have to forget the network all together. I tried upgrading to windows 8.1 in hopes it might fix some issues. I feel it's ten times worse now.  My laptop has a broken hinge that is common with this ideapad model, I am getting it fixed soon. Do I need to also order another wireless card and if so what should I get. I am going to university soon and I will not have much income for fixing my laptop. I bought this thing a year ago planning for it to last me at least five years. But at this point I'm about to bring my old IBM laptop I bought back in 2004 with me instead. This is rediculous and I can barely do my homework. So please help.

I tried to run the new BIOS upgrade on the drivers page, but after running the first file (the 'public' one), my laptop wouldn't boot normally anymore. It showed me a boot menu telling me to select the right device to boot from, but nothing worked. I did still have access to the BIOS, so I told it to Load Default Settings and I finally got it working again. However, since some settings somewhere have been changed, I have been coping with some things I just can't seem to get right. What's especially annoying is that my touchpad toggle (fn + f6) no longer works. The icon shows up telling me I have disabled or enabled my touchpad, but the touchpad keeps working regardlessly. I uninstalled the touchpad driver and rebooted and it did work, but when I reïnstalled the driver, it stopped functioning again. I figured that that should probably be the other way around Another smaller issue I have run into is that changing my brightness acts kind of weird. It works, but I've seen it go up or down in my display bar by 5 blocks at a time or 1 block (it's now 1 block at a time), but I believe 5 blocks at a time is more like it used to work. But the weirdest part (but least troubling actually) is that the display bar is the same size as the sound display bar, so 10 blocks, but there are waaaay more options than that, so I can keep upping the brightness even if the bar is full. The sunny side of the whole thing is that my graphic driver issues that lead me to the driver page have bee... I have just purchased the Lenovo Z580 two days ago. Its the i3 model with Windows 8 and I have since noticed problems with the internal wireless adaptor. When I'm connected to my router wirelessly my signal is terrible I get five bars initially then two and then one and it remains on one bar thereafter or disconects entirely. My other computers are fine with the range from the router even when in the same room as the Lenovo laptop and the Lenovo is the only one that struggles to maintain a coonection, I have also noticed that the bandwidth recieved by the wireless adapter is also poor in that I am mostly getting 1Mbps. I have tried installing another driver but it didn't help, I have also opened the bottom panal and checked the cables to the antanna and still no improvement. I'm not sure why it has such poor range, the device manager shows its a broadcom card, I've never had a braodcom before I usually have atheros because all of my previous laptops have been Toshiba. I'd appreciate some advice from the community here, are there any known problems with the wireless adaptors for this hardware? Thanks to all who take the time to help.

Hi, My laptop has had certain issues since I bought it a couple of weeks ago. - When I click the x button in a window using the left click button on the pad, sometimes the window behind it closes as well. I tried the double click test in mouse settings and it doesn't seem like a double click is registering. - Sometimes when I open a new window in Firefox, it switches back to a previous window for no reason after a few seconds. This could be a software issue but I haven't experienced it outside of this computer. I've tried disabling add-ons. - The trackpad has twice stopped working completely. The first time was for a minute. The second time was for much longer. I restored the computer to factory settings and it still didn't work. The next day it was working. I've tried installing the latest touchpad drivers from both Lenovo and Synaptics and it didn't help. I realize these problems are all over the place and might be unrelated, but I don't know how else to present them. I appreciate any input.

Hi, I am having a weird wifi issue. I have been using my lenovo z580 with windows 8 for the past 8 months without any problem. But suddenly a week back my laptop's wifi started disconnecting after 5-10 mins of usage. Then if i reboot my laptop the wifi works for 5-10 mins again and disconnects. I have gone through some of the posts here and disabled the Bluetooth tray application, updated LEM, wifi drivers, but still i cant fix the issue. I have found a temporary solution. If i put my laptop into sleep mode and bring it back again, the wifi starts working. but again it will work for only 10 mins. apparently i am having to do this fix every 10 mins which is annoying. I even tried reinstalling windows 8 but still there has been no improvement. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening? do i have to go to the service center to replace any hardware?

Hi. I am having issues with Bluetooth on my IdeaPad Z580.Prior to last Wednesday, when system updates were done prior to shutting down, Bluetooth had worked perfectly fine, but since these 'updates' I can only send documents, etc. from my Z580 to my BlackBerry 9790, but I can't send from the BlackBerry to the notebook?Devices have been paired, sharing is On and Bluetooth is On in Wireless Devices. Please advise... Many thanks in advance. Best regardsDuane

Answer:Bluetooth issues with IdeaPad Z580

hi Duanet,

Can you create a system restore point and try the following:
1. Uninstall the Bluetooth Software from the Control Panel > Programs and reboot
2. Verify under Device Manager that the bluetooth device is using the generic driver then pair both devices and observe if you can now send files from PC-to-Phone and vice versa.

3. If same problem, reinstall the original bluetooth driver from D:\Drivers\Bluetooth or from the lenovo website

Hi there,Apologies if this is a repeated thread/post/question, but I've recently starting experiencing some problems with the Wireless on my IdeaPad z580 (to my knowledge, I have not updated any software to have reasonably caused this problem)Every so often now (seemingly 2-3 times a day), the wireless card seems to cut out completely, only allowing limited connection. If I try to turn switch it into aeroplane mode and back again, it completely disables the wifi and it grays out the option to switch it back on again. If I then go through networking on the control panel to re-enable the hardware it completely crashes the laptop and has to be hard-rebooted. Likewise if I attempt to use Microsofts pathetic troubleshooting to resolve the problems the laptop crashes and has to be restarted.I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit alongside Linux Mint 15, which I mainly use for University work. The laptop uses a Broadcom BCM4313 Wireless Card. My suspicion is that this is a hardware issue, and having only had the laptop ~6 months I should be able to get it repaired under warranty from Lenovo (I think). From some internet searches I have seen others have problems where the wireless card gets shut down by Energy Management, however it seems like they simply cannot connect and switching the card off and on again fixes the issue. Is this a known problem with Lenovo? Is there anything that can be done to stop it happening? Am I covered by a warranty? It may be worth noting that if my wireless goe... Read more

Lenovo Ideapad Z580 for about 2 weeks ago and whilst I really like it there are a few problems with it. Certain keys on the keyboard only work intermittently, namely the 'a' the 'o' and the 'e' and occasionally other keys too. This makes typing a real problem as I have to continually keep going back to correct things. I'm a proficient typist and haven't experienced this type of problem before on any other machine. Also the touchpad is so sensitive it keeps activating icons when it passes over them without any need to click. It jumps the pointer to another part of the document and sets off on it's own journey without any input from me! It also keeps swiping in the charms bar then the Start window when I'm in the middle of working ? REALLY annoying! Any ideas please? I don't want to have to take it back as 'not fit for purpose' if it's just a simple thing to correct. Thanks

Answer:Z580 touchpad and keyboard issues

hi hamchris,

Welcome to the Forums.

Regarding the issues that you're experiencing:
1. Try to boot in Safe Mode and observe if the keys on the keyboard only work intermittently
    - if it is, there's most likely a problem with the keyboard and you need to send it for service).
    - if all of the keys work ok, perform a clean boot and observe it in normal mode

2. The touch sensitivity is probably activating the double tapping feature, try to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad by navigating to Control Panel (large icon view) > Mouse

I use IdeaPad Z580 (Winodws 8 Pro) and find two important issue.1. If I use expand RAM module over 8GB, eg. 12GB or 16GB, the CPU usage will be abnormally high and cause the NB is too slower. It occurs when the graphic setting is be set as nvidia optimus, it's regular when the setting is be set as only intel graphic chipest2. I connect a USB 3.0 device (network interface card or harddisk dock) on USB 3.0 port. if I hibernate Z580 and then wake it up, the device performance will slow down like as USB 2.0 device until I restart Z580. I hope Lenovo can release new bios or driver to solve these issues. By the way, I come from Taiwan, Taiwan official web does not provide chinese mail consumer service and only provide chinese phone service. But phone service  is non-useful because most users need work on office time, so I wish lenovo can provide chinese mail service for Taiwan consumers. Any help would be appreciated.

I only have the HD4000 in my Z580 so i did not notice any slowdown, but i did have a problem with the occasional black screen boot, normally first thing in the morning after the notebook had been unplugged overnight, and ii would have to hold the power button down, the next boot worked fine. I switched back to 8gb and no problems, i have switched back and forward a few time, and their is defiantly a problem. John.

I am having trouble with the keyboard for my Lenovo Z580. The touch pad will randomly stop working for a few seconds at a time and then the keyboard will type characters erratically or delete items without me pressing any buttons. I thought it may have to do with the touchpad sensitivity but I tried to adjust the settings on the touchpad and even uninstall the touchpad program but the keyboard is still typing ".............................." or deleting everything without me intending to do so. If I press "Num Lock" it will stop for a few seconds and then start again. I sent it in to the warranty company I got through Staples (where the computer was bought) and they said they replaced the AC adapter but I am still having the same problems. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hello, I am new to this forum and have just recently bought my Lenovo laptop Z580. I updated to Windows 7 ultimate and everything seems working but I am having wireless connectivity issues. I have a good signal, I can connect to wifi and I donīt experience any internet cuts, however my download speed suddenly drops down, websites are loading slowly as well. Then I run a windows built-in diagnostic tool for wireless and it resolves it automatically: It resets the wireless network adapter and verifies if the network adapter configuration problem is resolved and thatīs it. It shows at the end that I had problems with wireless adapter or access point and that it is fixed. The speed is OK, fast download, everything seems to be working. However the problem occurs again and again. And although Windows automatically resolves it, it is just a very short term solution.I have AR9285 wireless adapter, I tried to update the driver from the official website - no luck. I tried to uninstall the driver completely and install again the one that I have on my: /D hard drive - nothing changed. I have also tried to change my router channels from 6 to 11 and to 1 but no luck. Can you please advise me on this matter?Thank you!

Answer:Z580 WIFI connectivity issues

I suggest you do a onekey recovery to factory reset the laptop. See if it persist in the factory install.

I had installed windows 8.1 and recently updated the windows through windows update and then my problems began. When it restarted all I would get is a black screen. I powered down and powered on but still no resolve. I was able to power up onece I removed the battery and ac and left for 10 minutes then it would start up. This would happen all the time and it got frustratingly annoying. After readin on these forums that I should not of upgraed to Windows 8.1 I then went back to windows 8 factory settings( a bit drastic but I needed to do it)  I am still having the same problems though as before. When I finally get the screen come upo it will not let me into bios or startup modes eg safe mode and all the other options that go with it.   Can anyone help me resolve the issue with the restart and the bios menus etc.. Please note I do not know lots about computers however I do know some bits and really need help to resolve. I have also read on the forums that there is an ongoing issue with the idea z580 that the techi guys are not able to resolve.. This is my first post and I would be grateful for any help given. Thank youTony

Hi, I am facing key pad problem with ideapadz580.The keys "9","O","L","." are not working remaining all keys are working perfectly. Please provide me a solutions. * I did restart and reinstalling drivers but of no use.

Answer:Ideapad z580 series keypad issues

Hi and welcome to the lenovo forums.

Can you try to boot into Safe Mode and see if all of the keyboard keys are working.

If all of the keys are working, there's most likely an third party application that's disabling the "9","O","L"," and "." keys. Perform a clean boot to isolate what app is causing the issue.

If all of the keyboard keys still doesn't work in Safe Mode then this is most likely a defective keyboard and you need to contact lenovo for service.

Hope this helps

I have removed and re-installed the drivers and this has had no impact.  It is really frustrating as it is becoming more and more regular and also the keyboard seems to be having minor issues too. If anyone can help it would be most appreciated Thanks, Will

Answer:Ideapad Z580 - touchpad / keyboard issues

hi Will,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to check

Curious, if you don't re-install the Touchpad driver from the lenovo website and let Windows use a generic driver, are you still getting freezing issues while using the Touchpad?

If you have the Synaptics touchpad and it works fine with the generic driver then the problem is likey with the driver. Try to install this driver directly from the Synaptics website:

Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v17.0.19
118.1 MB zip

If the freezing issue still occur even with a generic touchpad driver then it's likely that the Touchpad is showing signs of imminent failure. In this case, I recommend you contact lenovo and report your findings.

As for the keyboard, are some of the keys not working?
 - If some of the keyboard keys are intermittently working then this is likely a keyboard failure and I recommend you report this also when you contact lenovo.

I've recently been having issues with both my wireless adapter and the cooling fan in my Z580. I upgraded to Windows 10 about 1 year ago. My fan does not seem to work at all, I can't hear it and the laptop climbs to very high temperatures. More recently the Wifi has been disconnecting and my router disapears from the list. Switching on and off the computer helps 80% of the time. I'm not exactly sure of where to start to try and resolve this.

Just before Christmas took delivery of my shiny new ideapad z580 running windows 8. I will explain everything first and see where we get.I use this in my home studio and connect a Rane SL1 usb souncard through it and then use Serato or Virtual DJ and timecodes through the CD players. After installing the drivers and plugging in the USB SL1, the touchpad came to a virtual stop. Unplug USB and it starts moving again.I then tried option 2, which was to plug in a 3.5 stereo jack into the audio output and connect this to a mixer. Sound works fine, but again the touchpad comes to a virtual halt. I then left this for an hour and when i came back the touchpad was working. Unplug it and put it back in, then touchpad goes back to dead slow or stop. I thought it may have been that the drivers for my USB SL1 controller where not Windows 8 compatible and as these are not available yet, I went and bought a Hercules USB soundcard, which comes with Windows 8 Drivers. Plugged this in all excited, only to find that the touchpad freezes or moves very slowly when I do. Unplug and the touchpad moves freely. Leave it for an hour and again the touchpad moves freely and everything works. I have tried it in both USB3 and USB2 ports. The only thing I have not tried is using an external mouse. I wrote today as I have seen lots of people saying the same about the Touchpad. Mine is the Synaptics one. I have also read somewhere that the easy option is to use the windows 8 drivers.... Read more

This is my first and I think last time I have bought lenovo gadget. I had dell laptop for 3 years then for 5 years I had Apple. Someone recommended me to try lenovo but I can't believe it such a well known company can make a trash like this.Just because of this serious issue of  internet connection. I have lost  some of my official data's and unsaved work. Once I was in the middle of transferring money online and internet went off. I have a problem with my wifi. I have looked at other post's, I have updated the drivers. I have also changed the settings for the wireless card on the power settings. This has made no difference. This is not linked to the router or provider as my other PC and phones are all working fine. Just because of that issue I bought new router and wifi connectors months back I went back to office depot (bought from that place) and they asked me to call lenovo for your problem. So I did and they sent me new card for that issue. It worked for a month and the problem started again. I called them yesterday and they asked me to send it to them. During that time period do I have to buy a new one for my personal use? This time my friend asked me to try this forum. And I am surprised that this is the main problem with this laptop. How can we loss $500 on such an item? If there was such a big issue they should recall it instead of making people fool. Hey, It's me again.
I have another question.

I have a problem with my battery. The icon says "Plugged in, charging"
But, I'm not charge it. The battery loss 1% every minutes. I've stopped every programs that uses more battery power. And, the laptop was so hot even i've use it for only 10 minutes. Is there's something wrong? Maybe my laptop battery is leaking? Or, electricity problem? Or, there is shorting with the battery's electricity? Or maybe because I charge it too long, in last time I charge it?

Install SpeedFan to get temperature readings and enable variable fan speed if it's available, consider the other overheating steps, establish a Clean Boot from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Fill out the rest of your specs - at least the HP model number.

Report back results.

HP's have the worst load of preinstalled crapware and duplicate utilties which interfere with better versions built into Win7. It's really the worst possible install of WIn7 which is why most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

Just purchsed the Lenovo Z580 at Staples for 549.99.  The Windows 8 OS is pre-installed on the machine.  Starts up fine, navigates fine, but for some reason the wireless seems to go from Connected to Limited to Connecting to No Network all in the span of ten seconds.  I can get the internet to work for about five seconds max, but after that nothing. Is it a defective machine or am I missing something?

Answer:Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 WiFi Connection issues.

Find out what wifi brand and model number then see if you can a newer driver , do a search of the net. I have the broadcom bcm4313 and i was getting the limited connection, though it was zero connection every hour, but after a search i found a driver, and it only happens maybe once a day now. I have an Win7 Z580 John.

I am working on my wife's Z580 running Windows 7 64 bit. The machine has two issues that have not been resolved even after running a restore to factory settings using the OneKey recovery option. When I try to open the "Devices and Printers" option in the Windows start menu, it just hangs and never displays any information. When I try to open the Task Manager via ctrl+alt+del, it instantly crashes.I am able to get both TM and D&P to work in Safe Mode. I have also run the hardware scans in the Lenovo Solution Center, scanned the hd for errors, and used the SFC scannow through the command prompt. with no problems uncovered. I am suspecting some kind of driver conflict, but it seems like it must be one of the pre-loaded drivers with the system, since I performed a factory restore and have not really installed anything new while trying to determine the problem other than Chrome, Firefox, Comodo Internet Security and Revo Uninstaller. The problem was ocurring before I installed those programs, too. Also, Windows Update has updated some things since restoring back to Windows 7 SP1, but again, the problems were occurring before those updates were installed. If anyone has any other ideas to try, I would be most grateful!

Hello, Thank you in advance to anyone who helps. I have a problem with my wifi. This is not linked to the router or provider as my other pc and phones are all working fine. Basically when im using the wi-fi on my laptop after around 10 minutes it decides to stop working and wont load pages or freezes. It stops and starts all the time. The wifi signal is on full. I have looked at other post's, I have updated the drivers. I have also changed the settings for the wireless card on the power settings. This has made no difference. I am very tempted to return this laptop to john lewis and get my money back. I have only had it 3 months. First problem I had was the touchpad being very temperamental. Then I had issues with the volume button not working, fixed after shutting down and restarting. Now I'm having these issues with the wireless internet. What could possibly go wrong next. I'm starting to wonder is this the reason they discontinued these models in john lewis. If anyone can help me, would be very appreciated. Persuading me not to return this laptop is going to be much harder.

I've just upgraded my system to Windows 7 (new install). My X60 lenovo is equipped with extended battery. Also I have installed ThinkVantage System Update 4.0, updated the software:  Power Manager 3.0 etc. With Windows 7 the battery is charging up to 30 %. It going normal up to 25% and then it going very slow up to 30% and then the indicator suddenly  jumps to 100%.If I disconnect the AC power, the battery's percentage is going down to 60 % and then suddenly the laptop beeps like if battery was critically low and the system shuts down. After I connect the AC power again - the battery indicator shows 3-5 %.On the previous system (WIndows XP) everything was OK. The system worked with full charged battery about 4 hours. With the Windows 7 it works only 40-60 minutes. Please help me to solve this issue.

Answer:Battery issues running Windows 7

I have the same problem, except I also had it with Windows XP. I have yet to find a solution or any help for it, but I figure I'd let you know that you are not alone. My computer would work fine for about an hour or so on battery, run down to 50-60%, then give me the 5% warning and shut down. After a while, the battery just completely died, so I bought a new non-Lenovo battery. That battery went down to 50-60% in an hour and then the computer just shut off without any warning at all. I upgraded to Windows 7, using the same non-Lenovo battery, and nothing has changed. At this point, I don't even want to use it on battery for fear that it will suddenly cut out.

Hi,   I have 2x Probook 6460b that both have good batteries but will not charge them.  They worked in windows 7, but have some acpi battery driver errors in windows 10.  I've tried the unistall and reinstall methods for the acpi battery that include removing the battery etc and that didnt work.     Is there a new acpi battery driver that might work?  or another method  to fix  this?  Thanks

Answer:windows 10 ACPI battery issues

I susupose that eitehr It started when i upgraded the bios,  or windows upgraded the drivers, though the acpi driver is from 2006 so im starting to suspect a bios update might be the culbrit. any ideas? Thanks

Not a complaint but an observation...all of my Windows 10 Tablets have significant battery drain.
2 Surface Pro 3's
Dell Venue 8 Pro
HP Stream 7
(my Lumia ICON with Windows 10 also suffers, even with a lot of background settings off.)
On my smaller tablets, I forced hibernation to help for now. I used to get 3-5 days sleep/standby on my Venue 8 Pro.
Wanted to make an official thread (since I didn't see one)...I heard there was an "Intel Bug" that was causing some drain.

Answer:Battery Drain Issues in Windows 10

I noticed that my surface pro 2 battery drain really fast after I upgraded it to windows 10. I probably lost 2 hours of working hours on my tablet/laptop cuz of that.
I hope there will be an update to fix this issue or I might need to disable many background apps that's working now and Cortana as well to make the battery last longer :\. it will bad though not using these features to save battery XP

Recently my Z580 has been typing characters (specifiaclly a period) repeatedly, without me having pressed any key, whenever I open any applicaiton or software (such as notepad or the internet). Also whenever I press the b or n key it begins doing the same thing and types periods without stopping. I've tried cleaning the keayboard, but that didn't work. I have also tried booting in safe mode to see if the problem persisted and it did. I've scanned my computer for viruses as well but found nothing. So I'm out of ideas as to what to do. Thanks for the help

hi alebarraza,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If the system is still within warranty, It would be best if you call Technical Team and ask fo assistance, I believe it is the Keyboard it self or the Keyboard cable that is causing this.

Hope this helps

When I bought Lenovo Y480 recently, it came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I have been using Windows 8 in the Battery Optimization Mode (where battery only charges until 59% for longer life). Now, something has some gone wrong with Windows 8 and had to install Windows 7. Now I have two problems - 1) The battery only charges until 59%. What/Where do I change to get the battery charged until 100% ?2) While discharging from 59%, the charge goes to 58%, 57% and then suddenly drops to 6%. Overall I get a battery life of 5 minutes, at maximum. So, is the battery damaged? Or is it due to the change from Windows 8 to Windows 7?

I bought my ideapad z580 in Mar 2013. Since it came with windows 8 which was hard to use, I didn't use the ideapad until this year when i downloaded windows 10. But the realtek internal microphone on this laptop seems to be very unsatisfactory and problematic. These are some of the issues I noticed with this microphone. 1) The recorded voice is very low volume compared to the background noise. If I go to Sound->Audio Devices->Microphone-> Levels and increase the Microphone Boost to +30dB and Microphone level to 100, then there is a very sharp background noise. 2) The recording is very low volume compared to other laptops that i have had. 3) There is always a strong hissing/background noise when recording anything.  4) Voice recording adobe flash doesn't record when run on Mozilla Firefox. When I use sites such as vocaroo.com to record voice, the mic doesn't record. I am using windows 10/firefox 43.0.1. When I use Chrome or IE, these sites record voice using mic but the recorded sound still has the issues listed above. I bought the laptop directly from lenovo website. Anyone else experienced these issues with the internal mic on this ideapad? How to fix them?Is the warranty still available on this?

Answer:Internal Microphone on Ideapad z580 has background noise, lots of issues

Can Lenovo rep help with this issue? Unbelievable that this PC comes with this low-quality microphone and there is no help...

hi everyone,

today i started experiencing some very bizarre occurrences with my battery and the windows 7 battery icon
1. on bootup, instead of the usual battery icon, it was crossed out, saying "there is a problem with your battery, so your computer might shut down suddenly"
2. rebooting did not solve the problem
3. casting about the internet, i found that updating your bios could help. getting the latest files from asus, this did not solve the problem
4. i decided to drain the battery a little and then recharge it, to see if i could get anything
at this point the percentage remaining began to behave weirdly
the first thing i realised was that the battery was being drained at a ridiculous rate, on the order of 1% every half minute. This was on power saver and verified idle CPU and hard disk. I recognise that old batteries do begin to wear down and have reduced battery life, but given that only a month ago i was able to squeeze 6 hours out of a full battery I find less than an hour now totally ludicrous
Upon plugging in, the percentage stabilised at 79% plugged in, not charging
the battery charge light on the laptop was green, indicating full charge
i decided to repeat. The % once again fell very sharply. This time when i plugged in power the indicator turned red (charging), but the windows percentage jumped from 75% to 85% (or similar)
this continued to occur with subsequent tests, the % fluctuating wildly and the indicator light the only thing that i recognise a... Read more

Ive downgraded the laptop to windows 7 64bit as I prefer this operating system but since doing this I have extremely poor battery life at less than 2 hours on a full charge. The battery mode is set on normal mode and ive downloaded all relevent drivers from Lenovo. Any one have any bright ideas as im all out? Thanks Matt

I will be clear and to the point:"The Battery gauge is messed up. It never shows how much it ACTUALLY is. Like right now its stuck on 99% when I know it should be less (Since i've been using it alot on battery)" These are the things I did:1. Reinstalled Windows 10.2. Disabled Lenovo ACPI Controller and Uninstalled Microsoft ACPI Battery Drivers.3. NEVER used Lenovo Battery Manager. Please tell me a possible fix other than Downgrading back to Windows 8.1.Thanks

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S431 purchased in September 2013. It came with Windows 7. A few months ago, I started running into battery issues. The battery manager alerted me to a battery failure, or poor battery health. The battery would last about 30 minutes, but my system wasn't able to estimate the time remaining accurately. I noticed that my laptop would go to sleep immediately if I pulled the charger out, but I would be able to turn it on and use the laptop on battery for 30 minutes. This only happened sometimes, but why? I assumed it was due to my battery. I purchased a new battery, FRU P/N 45N1139, ASM P/N 45N1138, as per recommendation from Lenovo support staff. While waiting for the battery to arrive, I upgraded my system to Windows 10. It seems Lenovo Power Manager isn't compatible with Windows 10 and now I can't go back to Windows 7 because it has been over 1 month. Main problem: I removed my old battery and installed the new one, but it doesn't charge at all! I had my laptop plugged in for over 24 hours, powered off, and the battery didn't accumulate any charge. The battery started at 2% but now it's at 0% (not sure if these estimates are accurate), and my laptop shuts off immediately if I remove my charger. I put my old battery back in and it charges fine. I can still use my old battery for about 30 minutes. What should I do? The old battery charges fine. Should I return this battery and buy a new... Read more

Apologies if this issue has already been solved; I searched but could not find any threads on this topic. My SP2 has NO battery life to speak of since I upgraded to Windows 10. Before the upgrade it would stay at full power in sleep mode over a weekend; now it can't go 12 hours without being plugged in.

Is there a fix for this issue? Something I can turn off? I really liked being able to grab my SP2 at anytime and know that there would sufficient battery to do anything. I'm pretty much tethered to the power cord right now which is pretty much pointless for a tablet.

Thanks!
