Z580 - Windows 8 Upgrade

Question: Z580 - Windows 8 Upgrade

I have a Z580 ideapad for which Lenovo recommends a clean install of Windows 8 from Windows 7 and to date all attempts to do otherwise ahve resulted in a corrupt installation. Where do I find the installation files for the bundled software that came with the machine? This is promised according to a paragraph at the bottom of the webpage but does not include non Lenovo software like Disk burning suite (Power2Go etc).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, I bought Ideapad Z580 in November 2012 installed with windows 7. Leagally upgraded to windows 8 under windows 8 upgrade programme. Now i am very desperate to upgrade further to windows 8.1, however i came across tons of problems faced by Z580 users regarding power mangement, display issues, wifi conncetivity and other tons of incompatability. I am requesting some system expert to tell me that if i proceed with the upgrade what could be the possible consequences? And wether it is still recommended to proceed with the upgrade?  Also i came across one forum wherein it was written that upgrading from windows 7 has terminated the lenovo warranty. I am holding 3 years extended warranty. Can installing new OS can result in termination of hardware warranty? Sounds strange.

Answer:Ideapad Z580 Upgrade to WIndows 8.1

Hi beats_1989,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Windows 8.1 has just been officially released and just like any other Operating System Patch, updates and fixes will sure to come. Most specially with the drivers, Im pretty sure sable drivers will be created for Windows 8,1 Support.
If I'm in your situation I'll Wait a little bit more until all issues has been resolved by community members and Lenovo.

You may encounter Driver and Software Compatibility Issues. Where in you might need to search in and out of Lenovo for Driver updates and do it manually.

Upgrading the Windows OS will not Void your Hardware Warranty, But their support for Preloaded Windows and Lenovo Software components may not be supported over the phone.

Still Any proven Hardware Defect or Malfunction will be covered by Lenovo through the coverage of your warranty, and there may be times that they will have to reload the Original OS/Software incase the Software / OS upgrade causes some hardware not to function properly. But surely you will be notified prior to making any changes on your Upgraded OS or Software.

Regards
Thanks,

Hello TvakilThanks for using the Lenovo forums. Are you certain the unit is compatible with win 10?

From the looks of it, there is not even win 10 drivers available for the unit,

You can double check the compatibility on this sheet/post:
https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/solutions/ht103535

I would suggest reverting back the previous Windows.

Dolby Digital Plus is not working after I installed Windows 10 upgrade, I've tried several things to fix the problem with no luck, has anyone else experienced the same problem and found a fix ???

Answer:Z580 Dolby digital plus not working after Windows 10 upgrade

hi! open control panel > sound > double click on speakers, go to Dolby tab and make sure it's on. you might also want to change your mediaplayer settings to use realtek output instead of default sound output. it's working for me.

I own a Ideapad Z580, and upgraded to Windows 8 yesterday. I noticed that the Intelligent Touchpad stopped working after the upgrade. I installed the appropriate driver, Synaptics Touchpad Driver for Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Z380/Z480/Z580, hoping it'd work, but to no avail. I also tried reinstalling/overwriting my existing 64-bit driver when prompted by my system to do so.The scrolling, pinching, and sideways scrolling do not work at all; it is quite frustrating. Please help.

I bought a ideapad z580 3 months ago and thought of upgrading to windows 8 (64bit). it was a pain. finally i had to revert to windows 7 because of driver installation errors & missing drivers. Can somebody tell me why i got these errors (i did a clean install of the os & tried running setup with admin privileges)realtek driver - No driver supported in this driver packagecamera -the setup program for the target device is not foundnvidia-unable to execute the command linetouchpad-setup asked for 64bit exe error also i got 'target device not found' & 'unable to execute the command line' errors for wireless, intel managment driver, vga driveronly chipset and energy management drivers installed properly.   I called lenovo chat support team & they helped me with installing driver by browsing the path in devmgmt.msc..thats not the normal way to install a driver. You click on a setup & it should install. Also i dont get to see 'Lenovo OneKey theatre' software on 'Other Softwares' category.I should call these as buggy drivers for windows 8 and dono why lenovo is pushing it to the support site. Ideapad Z580 users please try installing win8 in a virtual machine before upgrading your pc.am so frustated. spent more than 4 hours on Upgrade & still achieved nothing.

Question: z580 upgrade

Can i upgrade my z580 from windows 7 to windows 8 stably? Like i mean without encoutering problems with important drivers like the WiFi ?

Answer:z580 upgrade

You can buy the Z580 with Win8 installed, so i suppose you should be able to get all the drivers from the lenovo website, though people say to use the Win7 power manger software, also if you have a blu-ray the powerdvd10 will not work with Win8. I have two Win7 Z580 myself and am going to get the $15 Win8 upgrade before the offer runs out at the end of the month. Just make sure to make your Win7 recovery dvd`s and backup the Win7 drivers/software on your d: partition. If you can get a new hdd or ssd and keep your original hdd intact. John.

Hey,   I have just aquired a very cheap Z580,  it contains the i5 3210m 2.5ghz CPU.  I have added and extra 2gb RAM taking it to 8gb.  I will be using this computer on the road for light video editing and transcoding.  The software i use is CPU heavy, so I have thought about upgrading it to an i7.  If this is possible does anyone have any recommendations.   Adam

Can anyone confirm that upgrading the Z580's LCD panel is possible? From the owners / repair manual it seems as though it is using a dedicated 40 pin connector for the LCD panel instead of the 30/10 lcd/webcam connector used in some of the other models. my current laptop has 1080 on a 13 inch screen so I fear 1366 on 15.6 will be blindingly ugly. Thanks for your insight

Question: Z580 CPU upgrade ?

Hi all , I have a Lenovo Z580 with 6GB DDR3 ram , nVidia GT640M and Intel Pentium B970 2,3GHz . I have a Intel core i7 2620M and saw that both CPUs are socket G2 (rPGA988B) would the i7 work with the system or not ? Also I asked some technicians who told me they could replace it for me (because I don't know how to replace the cpu on a laptop) so is it possible ?

Answer:Z580 CPU upgrade ?

Gonna resurect this thread because I looked for an answer to this question and could find one. I just swapped in a i7-3610qm (which did not orignally come with any variation of this computer) I used my air compressor to clean my heatsink.  bios accepted the CPU, the 3610qm is a 45w processor so it runs 10w hotter than the stock i5-3210m. I ran a few passes on Intel burn test and the hottest core reached 86C which is acceptable considdering the Tjunction is 95C and Throttling kicks in a 105C Conclusion: Success!

Answer:Memory upgrade for z580

hi satyr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If you're using CPUZ under the SPD tab it may say 800 Mhz for your RAM
and Given that it is a Double Data Rate the Reading of CPUZ should be Multiplied by 2
so the Actual Speed your RAM has is 1600 Mhz.

You might be able to get lower temps by using higher-grade thermal paste. Or seeing if a better heatsink from a different IdeaPad fits (chances are low).

Hi  I have a Lenovo Z580 core i7 with a GeForce gt 635m 1TBrunning 8 GB Ram = 4GB x 2 in slots 1 and 3 (bank 0) Can i put more ram and what is the max ram i can put on this motherboard?the idea is to get it up to a 16gb ram or 32 if possible. Also i want to have a better graphics card is there a way?  Want to make this Laptop into a gamers Laptop.

Answer:Possible to upgrade z580 ram and graphics?

Hi, You can replace your memory with two 8GB sticks, but IMO there's no point if all you want to do is gaming. You won't see any performance improvement in games. Unfortunately GPU is soldered to mainboard and there's no way to replace it. Replacing your HDD with a SSD will improve your game loading times and genrally the system will be way more responsive.

Hi guys,New here, just a month ago I bought the Z580 with win7, I did a backup of the factory state of the notebook, and then wiped clean for my own partition settings. And I am somewhat happy with its performance,  Yesterday I got an ssd upgrade for my Alienware M17x R3, from 60GB OCZ SOLID 3 to a Crucial 256 M4. Now I have an extra SSD also have an ODD to HDD caddy, I was thinking I will reinstall the windows to the ssd and install other big programs (AutoCAD 2014, Adobe Master Collection CS6) on the hdd, though the performance of programs may suffer but os performance would be acceptable. But also heard about Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), now I am confused. Can you guys please suggest me what to do, which path to go? Thanks all.

Answer:Z580 SSD Upgrade confusion

I have a y480 and went with a 128GB OCZ Vector drive. I am really happy with the performance. I did not use intel RST because when I went to install the drivers, it said I didn't have compatible hardware. So I just have a 128GB drive as my main drive and a 750GB 5400RPM WD drive as my secondary drive that I install Apps and save my data to.

Hi, I have a IdeaPad Z580 (20135) which came with 4GB+2GB PC3 12800 Hynix DIMM. I decided to upgrade to 8GB, so I bough 1 matching  Kingston 4GB DIMM. To test the new Kingston DIMM first I installed it in slot 0 and booted up a CD with a memory test program (memtest86+) and the test went fine and everything seemed to be working. I then added the old 4GB Hynix DIMM but now the computer doesn't start. Blank screen and the battery led blinks orange. I took the new Kingston out and replaced the old modules but the situation is still the same. I tried different configurations with the modules but the malfunction remains. During the last few attempts the computer seems to start but with a black screen. I connected an external monitor but that's black as well. I'd appreciate your help figuring this outThanks

Answer:Z580 Ram upgrade then black screen and no booting.

hi abadr,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

Can you try to:

1. Clean the RAM slots with compressed air

2. When you get it to boot-up using the stock RAM, try to go into the BIOS by repeatedly pressing F2 during boot-up. When you're in, press F9 to reset BIOS defaults and press F10 to save and exit. Turn off the computer and try to insert the new Kingston 4GB DIMM

3. If you're planning to get 8Gb dual channel, the timings might be different on the stock 4GB PC3 12800 Hynix DIMM and the Kingston 4GB DIMM (see spoiler for sample timings). It is recommended to use two identical RAM modules (brand, timings, type and frequency) to achive dual channel capability.
 Spoiler (Highlight to read)

Hope this helps.

New user here...have had my z580 (Win7 64bit) for a couple months and just did a RAM upgrade from the stock 6gb to 16gb. it was confirmed in another forum that it supports 16gb so i took a chance on the ram below:G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory ModelF3-1600C11D-16GSQ  But then booting up went from about 5 secs (i have an SSD installed) to about 90+ secs. i read on another forum that a temp fix would be to go to the bios settings and disable Optimus (it has an nvidia gt 630) and just force UMA. i did that and it booted up as quick as before. the 16gb were also recognized so i figured it's not a RAM issue? maybe a driver issue? Well since my laptop is still relatively new, i didnt have alot installed on it...so i decided to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 w/ the 16gb RAM installed. Went thru the whole process successfully re-installed essential drivers but it was the same result...whenever i booted up w/ Optimus enabled it would take over 90 secs, when i disabled Optimus, boot time was quick as before. Has anyone had this issue before? Or could point me to where i can find a fix for it? In the meantime, i re-installed the stock 6gb that was running no problem. thanks!!!

Answer:IdeaPad Z580: Can I upgrade the mini wifi card

Hello,I have Lenovo Z580 with 4gb of ram but since I do a lot of things at the same time like having photoshop,3ds max,skype....open and switching form one to other. The 4bg ram is easily spent. So I decided to get another 4 which would be 8 gb together which is max for my laptop. I found one that is afordable to me.But I am not sure if it's supported by this laptop. Here is the link http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/hrind/LenovoPortal/hr_HR/catalog.workflow:item.detai...  Also is there big difference between 1333 and 1600 ram memory?

Answer:Help! Memory upgrade for lenovo z580 or graphic card Urgent

Hi blackdragonstor,

Welcome to Leovo Community Forums!

You laptop may have one of these two configuration,

1 x 4GB stick or 2 x 2GB stick

I strongly suggest to buy tidentical cards from what you already have to ensure Dual channeling will work completely.
These are the memory defaults of Z580

Part No.             Model type / Brand

11200341

SS M471B5273DH0-CK0 DDR3 1600 4GB

or

11200340
SS M471B5773DH0-CK0 DDR3 1600 2GB

1333 and 1600 mhz, this will have a very small effect, but it is the speed of how the data moves in and out of the RAM, I suggest you get the same speed of what you already have.

Regards

Answer:z580 - Which password to use if laptop is in safe mode ideapad z580 ?

hi akshu_13,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you're running on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, you should use the same password that you've set on your account.

If you're running on Windows XP, by default, you will see an additional Administrator account and the password is set to none. If you'll be using your own account and not the Administrator one then you should use the same password like in normal Windows.

Note:
Windows 8/8.1 can use a Microsoft Account and a Local Account. If you boot in Safe Mode only (not Safe Mode with Networking), you won't be able to use the Microsoft Account login as it requires internet access to verify your credentials, thus, you will need to use a Local Account.

Let me know if this helps you out.

As the title says, just wondered if theres any lenovo software the works with the z580 ? lenovo companion on windows 8 offers some stuff but its listed as u series ect ? cheers for replys inadvance, mike

Answer:(z580) Just wondered what lenovo software will work with the z580 ?

hi mikee77,

The Lenovo Z580 comes with these lenovo pre-installed apps:

Lenovo OneKey RecoveryLenovo OneKey TheaterLenovo Cloud Storage by SugarSyncLenovo Energy ManagementLenovo Companion

The Lenovo Companion is like an app store the features:

Third-Party Apps and Ads
Lenovo products, Tutorials, Application showcases, Lenovo accessories information, Lenovo Cloud, and a link to Lenovo blogs and articles

Most apps listed on the Lenovo Companion will work on the Z580 as long as it meets the system requirements (i.e. If an app is made only for Touchscreen models, then you will need to get the non-touchscreen version or if there's a Utility app that senses temperature on a specific model, make sure Z580 is on the supported models).

Click here for more information on the preloaded softwares on the Z580 and click here for more information on the Lenovo Companion.

Hope this helps.

Hey All This is my 1st post here.. I have Z580 laptop with One Key Recovery Option... I have dual boot in it - Windows 7 Home Basic and WIndows Server 2008 R2 I want to create a back up image file of both at the same time, using One Key Recovery, so that I can restore back in future, if need be 1. So, I will log in to, say, WIndows 7 and take the back up image.. Will that take an image for both OS at the same time? Basic question here is does it image of the Hard disk or each OS.. 2. Or do I have to take a separate image of both after logging into respective OS? 3. If answer to 1 is YES, will that restore both the systems at the same time in future using the One Key Recovery solution? 4. If the answer to 2 is YES, can i restore both the systems individually just by using the One Key Recovery solution? Br, Ajay Maheshwari

Answer:Wifi and bluetooth is not working after upgarding windows 7 home basic to windows 8,,Z580

Hi hemantrocks1990,

First lets check if the drivers for the Wifi and Bluetooth is installed properly under the Windows 8 environment.  On the desktop press the windows key + c, then click on settings, then click on control panel.  Under control panel switch to large icons for view and go to system.  Under system we will have device manager available.

Please check if you can see the category Bluetooth, and the wireless adapter under Network adapters category.  If they are present, go to the properties of wireless adapter and check if the driver version is the latest and if the drivers are installed properly.  The latest Bluetooth driver version for Windows 8 is 12.0.0.1671/8.0.0.206 released 10/24/2012. Here is the link for the drivers.  The latest Wireless driver version for Windows 8 15.5.0.42/6.30.59.26/10.0.0.67 released 10/24/2012. Here is the link for the drivers.

If the drivers are installed properly, then we have to check if we are able to turn on and off the bluetooth or the wireless adapter.  Hit Fn+F5 and see if an interface comes up that gives you radio buttons to turn off or turn on your wireless and bluetooth adapters.  If no interface comes up, you may need to install the Lenovo Energy Management program to enable the hotkeys for turning on bluetooth and the wireless. Here is the link for the Lenovo Energy Management program.

Hi, I have a Z580 with an HDD that is going through a life ending experience. At the current time it does not boot. Although I have salveged most of the data off of it I would like to boot it one more time, in order to clone it. I have tried the repair tools, but they are not working. My repair disk relates to Windows 8 so that may explain why it is not working. I have access to the msdn Windows 8.1 install. I attempted to use that to do a reset, but the reset function provides the message that "the media inserted is not valid" even though this is the x64 version of the disk. I am at a loss how to proceed. Any suggestions? Given how well eveything has not worked so far, I am reticent to do a complete reinstall till I have the product key off the BIOS, but all the notes I find on this subject relate to running windows apps to obtain this, clearly something I cannot do right now.  In terms of replacing the HDD, can I simply clone the working hdd (assuming I get it to work) and then just replace, or is there anything else I need to worry about. I have gone through the forum but most of the discussion appears to relate to pre-windows 8.1 OS. Thanks

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Z580 DyingHDD, windows 8.1

You should be downloading the Win 8.1 64 bit standard or home version.  Your product key should be automatically detected if the OS originally installed is Win 8.1.As to other thing to worry about is the OKR program. It may no longer work after the cloning process.

Hi everyone! Been doing some research but couldn't find a solution to my concern.  I purchased an SSD that I want to use to boot windows 7 from in my 2012 z580, along with an ultrabay.  It seems like the general concensus is it's best to place the SSD in the main drive, and if I want to, place the HDD in the ultrabay.  My questions are: 1)  Would I be able to simple run the recovery partition that's factory installed on the current HDD to install windows 7 on the SSD, and be done with it all?  (Being able to use the SSD as my main boot and "C" drive, and the HDD as a media/storage drive) 2)  Can I take out the HDD, install the SSD, leave the optical bay in and do a clean install of windows?  My research seems like the key for my license is in the UEFI Bios.  And if so, then 3) would I have to reinstall all the drivers for my z580 to function? Thanks for all the help!

before I had win7. But I switched on win8 I can not turn on wifi or BT.and I do not have to turn it magager WiFI and BT. lenovo does not have a driver for it

Answer:Z580 windows 8 WIFI, BT

You must install the Windows 7 version of Lenovo Energy Manager for wifi or bluetooth to work.  The Windows 8 version does not allow you to use fn+f5.  Once you install the Windows 7 version, you can push fn+f5 and activate wifi or bluetooth.  There will be compatibility warnings, but it is the only way to turn on wifi and bluetooth at this time.  Do not reinstall the Windows 8 version until Lenovo updates the software, because you will eventually lose wifi or bluetooth again.  Also, you may need to use a program like Universal Extractor for the install files to extract properly. I hope this helps.  It took me lots of searching to find someone who figured this out.

On a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 Model 2151 Manufactured 5/6/2012

The computer will not boot. It defaults to the automatic Windows Repair menu.

When I first ran Windows Repair, it said that I have a corrupted mfewfpk.sys file, which is associated with McAfee Antivirus software.

Windows startup repair: ?cannot repair this computer automatically?.

I restored the system to the previous restore point and the one before that with no change.

In the command prompt, if sfc/scannow is chosen it says ?There is a system repair pending that requires reboot to complete. If I reboot the computer, I get the same message. I have done this multiple times. It's stuck in a loop.

When I tried to download a Windows 7 ISO file, Microsoft says to contact Lenovo.  Even if I am able to make a bootable Windows 7 USB drive, would I be able to fix the corrupted mfewfpk.sys file?

Hello Yesterday I've got myself a brand new z580. I picked the version with no system, as I already own a copy of Win8.Everything installed properly, but I'm having one extremely annoying problem that practically prevents me from using this laptop. I mean wireless internet... It connected without any problems just after the installation of Win8. Though after literally few minutes I ended up with the limited connectivity problem. I disconnected from the wireless network and connected again and it worked... for another 10-15 minutes. And it's happening all the time. I've been struggling with this problem since yesterday, so here are the things I've already tried:-installing WLAN drivers for Win8 from Lenovo - I get the message that "The setup program for the target device is not found",-downloading all important updates from Windows Update,-installing the chinese Lenovo drivers as I've seen it mentioned on these forums,-disabling IPv6 (through regedit),-disabling the IP Helper service,-disabling the option to let the system turn off the device to save power,-installing drivers for the WLAN from Windows Update. NONE of the above worked. I'm quite sure it's not the router problem, since the internet works perfectly fine on other 3 computers at home (one is XP and 2 are Win7). I'm totally clueless here and extremely annoyed because I actually can't use my new laptop due to this issue... I'd probably consider using Win7 instead, though my main cau... Read more

Answer:Yet another problem with z580 on Windows 8

Unfortunately this sounds like the same problem we are all experiencing.  There is no fix and the work around is to roll back the drivers.  It is not possible to get power management and wifi working together.  So if you need wifi then you need to eliminate the power management. See http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/S205-Windows-8-wireless-problem/td-p/884375

Hello! I'm thinking about updating my laptop to 8.1. I already had some experience with RTM which was released on MSDN and it was pretty unstable, I had issues with power management, overheating and Bluetooth - all of these worked properly on 8. Is there anyone with Z580 (or similar) with 8.1 on it? I'd like to know if something improved since then.

Answer:Windows 8.1 on Z580 - opinions

I just upgraded to 8.1 It's nice to know that this big update released day after RTM fixes some stuff. Unfortunately, I still have issues with power management. It worked well on both 8, and Linux, but not here. I get only 4h of battery life and my discharge rate is constantly jumping between 10W and 20W - on 8 it was 7-12W. I think it could be an issue with GPU drivers, because I remember having 20W+ discharge rate when using NVidia GPU on Windows 8. Anyone else has this issue?

I am working on a system running Windows 7 Home Professional.  The system will no longer boot to windows and stops at the Lenovo splash screen.  I can access the bios and I slaved the HD to my desktop and found errors on the HD including cross linked files and folders.  My system repaired the errors but still won't boot up.  The main goal here is to get Windows up and running again so that I can save all files and folders in MS Office.  No pst files exist.  I have ordered the complex services support package and it should be here in a day or two.  My question is, can Windows be resurrected in a manor that will not destroy MS Office/Outlook without loosing all files and subfolders.  Should I try to restore the MBR in debug mode?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, my Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 runs on a Windows 7.  Often times, I have to use the F5 button in the work that I do, and I notice when I hit that button repeatedly, my touchpad freezes.  The mouse stays where it's at, and I have to restart my computer to get it to work again.  I looked online, and see people saying to look for the mouse icon on either F7 or F9, but I don't see that on my keyboard.  I also have seen people talking about hitting a button to disable it on accident, but there is no such button by or near my touchpad.  It's extremely frusterating.  Can you help me?  Thanks.

I have a Idea Pad Z580 laptop running on Windows 8.1 and want to change to Windows 7. This, I believe involves the UEF system which is running on GPT. This has to be changed to MBR. How does one do this? (legacy bios - MBR)
At the same time, I would like to install a new hard drive. This is an SSD. I am hoping that if I install a new SSD hard drive the computer will ask the question -  do I want GPT or MBR thus allowing me to install a fresh Windows 7 under MBR.
Many thanks

Answer:what is best windows for lenovo ideapad z580 ?

Hi jimrako,

This is really a tricky question because it depends on your hardware.

The best way I can think of answering this is by providing you the requirements for each then you can check against your requirements:

Windows 10:

RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
Hard disk space:
16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS

Graphics card:
DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Display:
800x600
Cons: a bit of a learning curve as it changes a lot

Windows 8

Processor: 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory(RAM): 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
Hard Disk: 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Cons: Without Touch it is not intuitive

Windows 7

Processor: 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
Memory(RAM): 1 GB of RAM (32-bit)/2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
Hard Disk: 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit)/20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics: DirectX 9 graphics device with Windows Display Driver Model 1.0 or higher driver
Cons: None really, it is awesome

Windows XP

Processor: 233 MHz CPU
Memory(RAM): 64 MB of RAM (may limit performance and some features)
Hard Disk: 1.5 GB of available hard disk space
Graphics: Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
Cons: No longer supported by Microsoft

Again, this is my opinion, without a touch sc... Read more

I was tired of the green thing in the Energy Management (Win7 version) on Windows 8, like the brightness and volume indicators so changed it to blue Its a small visual mod, no harms. I made it and been using it myself, so thought of sharing it   http://www.mediafire.com/download/1r84pudbh04yrac/utility.rar Instructions:1> Go to Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Energy Management2> Make a copy of the file "utility.exe"3> Copy the file from the downloaded archive4> Open taskmanager, end process "utility.exe"5> Paste the file in the Energy Management folder, replace the existing file, make sure the backup is safe6> Double click on the new "utility.exe" to run the program again Now the indicators and the black background in volume, brightness, thermal management (crescent touch button above keyboard), mute, camera activate/deactivate, touchpad activate/deactivate will be blue To revert back to original, open taskmanager, end process "utility.exe", delete the file from EM folder, bring back the backed up file, double click on it to start the program.  I am not sure if it runs properly on Win7 (x86 & x64) and Win8 (x86), so if you try and its working please let me know

I have a Lenovo Z580 that came pre-installed with Windows 7.  I would like to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 without destroying any of the partitions so that if I do not like Windows 8.1 I can use the recovery feature to reinstall Windows 7 and all original drivers.  I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere in the forums.   I do understand that there is not a direct path to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8.1.  You have to upgrade to Windows 8 first.  However, I have never been a fan of OS upgrades.  I intend on doing a fresh 8.1 install.  My data is backed up.

Answer:Lenovo Z580 Upgrading From Windows 7 to 8.1

hi wwhsgrad2002,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If you are planning to upgrade from Windows 7 and thinking about having a backup that would let you go back to WIndows 7 anytime,

If I were in your post, Since I still have Windows 7 I can use the One key Recovery 7 which still has the Create Recovery Disc option.

I would create a set of Recovery Disc then proceed with the upgrade,
It is hard to say that the recovery Option built to the hard drive may or may not have an issue after OS upgrades.

So while in Windows 7, Create you Windows 7 Recovery Disc then proceed with your upgrades.

When you press power button start pressing F8 till advanced boot option turns up. Then navigate to repair your computer and press enter. Then wait till computer boots to repairing environmenr. Then either do a startup repair or a system repair to any point. If this also does not start, then do a one key recovery.

Hi! I have a Lenovo Z580 i5, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GT 630M.  I was running Windows 7 with good 5-6 hours battery but I've upgraded to Windows 8 (64bit) and ever since I'd be lucky to get even 1-2 hours running on battery. I've tried upgrading all of the drivers on the Lenovo site and the energy management is set for longest battery life, I can't get to the bottom of why it is happening. It seems the only option is to wipe the system and reinstall Windows 8 from scratch but I'd really rather not do that if possible. Any advice?

I dont know how you were getting 5-6 were you using a word processor with no wifi and low brightness, because i only get 3h34m on Win7 according to battery bar on my z580 just browsing the internet, i have only a 6 cell battery do you have a 9 or 12 cell??? John.
