y460 audio jack won't go in / headphone input problem

Question: y460 audio jack won't go in / headphone input problem

I am facing this problem with the speaker/headphone jack of my laptop y460, any audio headphone or speaker 3.5mm male input will not go in completely. I feel something is broken inside the speaker jack... though it goes in easily in the mic jack. I tried to see through using a flash light and compare between mic jack and speaker jack, there is definately something broken or stuck inside the headphone jack.. How can I get this issue fixed ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've recently been having a problem with my headphones. The computer recognizes that I've plugged them in but it still uses the external speakers and there's no sound coming through the headphones. I've tried more than one pair of headphones and it still doesn't work. Restarting the computer worked once but not anymore.

Answer:Speaker/headphone/audio jack problem

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

Hi, Omarattia  ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

First of all my laptop doesn't seem to acknowledge when I put my headphones/external speakers in the jack... no notification or reaction from the Laptop.2. Second- only left headphone is working. Other than that the laptop speakers are good, the only problem is with the jack. What I've done is to reset my PC, to return it to it's factory settings... but no change! Still the same problem!Laptop is new.. less than 3 months..  I am desperate... I really hope there's something I can do and you could help me with that! I really don't think it''s a hardware problem.. I have taken good care of the machine, no troubles.Thank you!

I recently run into this problem. The first time I tried to use it, it seems that the green jack for my headphones doesn't work at all. Plug in any pair and they don't even recognize it being there, as seen in Control Panel.

What might be the problem? The case has a bad jack, or the connector on the motherboard?

Hi there. So, when I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, the speakers don't mute and no sound comes through the headphones. I went into the control panel and tried to select a different speaker, and I found that one of the three speaker devices actually played sound through the headphones. Even setting it as a default wouldn't make the music play through the headphones though. So, I found websites like these: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-756888.html http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=687663&page=2 but I have no idea what is going on in these places because I'm useless when it comes to programming and what not. I'm a college student that is not too literate in the programming of sound cards. If somebody could break it down for me in really easy, simplistic steps (assuming that I have a pretty good knowledge of how to operate this vista platform) so I don't have to lose this lappy to tech repair, that would be fantastic. in recap: what I need is the sound to come through the headphones and not the speakers when headphones are plugged in. And it would also be nice if I could get sound to work and come through other speakers if I have an aux cable plugged into it. thank you.

Answer:Y510 Headphone Jack/Input issues

It can be either a software or a hardware problem. To determine if it is software you need to reinstall driver for audio, if doesn't help - fully restore system. If this doesn't help - you have a hardware malfunction (for example - some contact in jack-in is not properly soldered).

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

Hello my dear fellow windows 7 users!

A few days ago, one half of the jack of my external speakers got stuck in the female jack of my PC laptop.
I am using Realtek HD audio, and I wanted to ask whether it is possible for me to somehow disable the jack and have my audio played through my normal inbuilt laptop speakers, seeing as I will be needing audio from my computer as soon as possible.

Here is a snapshot of my audio devices - and as you can see the speakers and headphones are under one device so I can't switch between the two..

Please help
Thanks alot.

Answer:Audio jack stuck in PC input jack...?

You will need to get the broken piece out. Sometimes a strong magnet will dislodge it. Some RealTek's have a control panel that will allow you to reassign jacks, but I don't know if that will even do you any good.

If you have one it will be located in Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sound.

Answer:Audio jack stuck in PC input jack...?

There is a contact switch inside that audio port that switches the built in speakers off when a jack is inserted.
This is a physical switch so the issue is hardware. I doubt there will be any software solution for it.

So your mission is to remove that broken jack. If you are uncomfortable taking a laptop apart you might consider taking it to a repair shop.

How can I uninstall Dell Audio and only have the legacy Realtek Driver and Software in my XPS 14 (L421x)?
I installed some time age the default audio driver that I got from "Dell Drivers", this installed the "Dell Audio" + "MAXX AUDIO 4". I already uninstalled this thing, run CCleaner, deleted the folders, and downloaded and installed the legacy Realtek R 2.73 driver, but this thing (Dell Audio) is always installing with the driver.
My system audio is ridiculously loud. I need to put my system audio in somewhat 5~15 / 100% to get "normal audio", the only way I get realistic "normal audio range" is using my SteelSeries Wireless Headset with USB, this way the system audio goes to 100% automatically and I control the audio with the scroll located in the headset, even in 100% max audio, I get a "normal 100%", it's loud, but not EXTREME like the notebook audio!
Another problem, when I plugin my Apple Earpods, they simple doesn't work, I already tested them with tons of devices at home, and they are working great. The system doesn't even recognize them.
I think that everything would be resolved if I could install the Leagacy Realtek drivers & software, not this *** loaded with bloatware from Dell, I don't care about "MAXX Audio", "MaxxSense" and all this BS. If you look with attention, all the settings located in this "Dell Audio" menu are the same in the Real... Read more

If the Recorder as a output jack, you need by one that as that size of jack, also check if it needs stereo or mono to a input jack that is stereo to fit the input of the Laptop i.e microphone jack socket

Hello BleepingComputer

I just upgraded my computer a few days ago, and I am having problems with the Front Jack Audio/Headphone.

Normally, I set my Headphone to run simultaneous with my Speaker with Realtek HD audi/Stereo Nix (Disable Front Jack Detection and vice versa), and I could change the volume on both devices separately.
But since I changed the motherboard, when I have realtek installed, it doesn't have the Headphone setting in Sound/Playback.
The headphone work perfectly, but its linked to the Speaker's volume, which is really annoying.
Also, the Realtek layout changed from the last one I got, and doesn't have the "Disable Front Jack Detection" option.
(Picture: http://i903.photobucket.com/albums/ac232/notyellowasian11/Untitled-1_zps2242cdba.jpg)

So far, I have tired..
Installing an older version of Realtek driver;
Changing the audio setting in the BIOs (HD or AC97)
Changing the audio connector on the MOBO (Hd or AC97)
Tried multiple compinations with Realtek HD audio manager settings.
Cleaned every plugs/jacks related on that.

So far, I couldn't been able to get the Headphone tag at all when Realtek is installed.

Thanks !

That means Windows is trying to output to your SPDIF audio output, which is optical. Go into your Playback preferences, and change from Digital Out to Speakers.

Hi Forum,I use my computer a fair amount for music editing and my amplifier has just died on me.The Amp I was using was very cheap and didn't need to do anything special.Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find anything similar now.All I need to do is convert an Audio RCA input to a headphone jack output. The signal needs to be amplified as the input signal static so simply connecting straight to the RCA won't work.Anyone got any ideas of the cheapest way to do this? Or anyone know where I can get a cheap amp with a headphone jack output and RCA input? As always, any help appreciated.

Answer:Audio RCA to Headphone Jack?

I should imagine a trip to your local Maplins would sort you out. They have a wireless RF Headphone set (L 47 AA) which plugs into your source and Bobs your uncle ! Alternatively they have a cheap audio amp on a board which you can easily convert to your requirements with a couple of RCA plugs and sockets. OR, try EBay ???

I've been watching the Playback devices in the sound control panel and I'm rather confused why this is happening. Essentially, if I am listening to music (or anything for that matter), and I plug in headphones, the computer acknowledges that headphones are plugged in, but keeps the sound going to the previous device. Once I stop the music, then restart it, the sound will go to the headphones. If I unplug the headphones, the sound does not go back to the speakers until whatever program outputting sound restarts.Any ideas on this one?Edit: I should specify. It seems to only route the audio to another device once the program itself is restarted.

Possible Solution:
Put Windows to Sleep, then wake it up. Headphone jack audio will be restored.

Problem:
Headphone jack randomly stopped outputting audio.
volume control at 100% and appearing to work normally. Laptop internal speakers worked fine.
Windows detects headphones plugged in, but no sound in headphones.
Uninstall sound card and realtek drivers, reboot did not fix problem.

Tested Linux live CD and headphones worked in Linux.
So hardware was definitely not broken. Only Windows was broken.

(I had this issue recently, so I'm leaving this here for search engine results and anyone who has this problem in the future)

Answer:Possible fix when headphone jack has no audio, everything else normal

Holy crap i love you! I reinstalled Windows 7 recently to fix this problem after trying just about everything, but after a couple of Windows updates my headphone jack wasn't working again. Found your post after filtering search results to recent hits and this trick worked! This problem only creeped up a short while ago, so maybe it has to do with recent Windows updates.

Answer:Audio jack seems not detect my headphone

With what you stated you've tried, it could be an internal connection problem. Many Laptops have a small I/O board that is connected via a cable to the main board. If yours is this type, it may require "reseating" (unplug then plug back in) the connector.

My external speakers work fine, are loud for a laptop, really.

When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack (and yes, it's the right jack), there's no change, the audio continues from the external speakers.

I had the motherboard replaced recently, as it went dead, by a Dell tech, so could he have put it back together incorrectly?

It sounds like the headphone jack wasn't connected back to the motherboard, or perhaps the tech mixed up the mic/headphone jacks.

I just recenlty bought a pair of CL harman kardon headphones and after plugging them into my W530 they are as flat as can be and sound horrible to tell the truth.  I plugged them into my Iphone5s and they sound amazing.  Anyone might know what would be causing this?

Immediately whenever a headphone or earbud is plugged in, the audio is crackly, until I go to the realtek audio manager which doesn't have many options. once I change the Left-Right balance to being very one-sided, the cracks and pops don't occur anymore. However all of the balance is off, voices are not audible, and SFX or background music/tracks are output very bad.Testing the left-right balance, both play the same as if the headphones are mono audio.

Hi there, Ray -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Did you check headphones with with different system?
Check your speaker and headphone connections for loose cables or the wrong jack.
Check your power and volume levels, and try turning all the volume controls up.
Also, try updating the BIOS

Are you using a combo-jack splitter to get a microphone input?  Something like this:

When I plugged in the headphone into the audio jack, there is no sound.  The sound is coming from the internal speakers.  I just installed System Mechanic and ran a system analysis.  I don't know if the registry was changed or what.  There is not a problem with the headphone; I tried another headphone and have the same problem.  The laptop detects the headphone, an icon shows in the Notifications area saying a device was plugged in.

Answer:No sound when headphone is plugged into audio jack

Hello. See if it will work when you switch from the Realtel driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

Hi I have had audio issues with my Envy 15 for ages (possibly since W10 upgrade?) and they are now really irritating me. The output on the headphone jack is completely flat - no bass or treble, horrible to listen to. The internal speakers work fine. I have the "IDT High Definition Audio Codec" installed, version 6.10.6491.0. I have tried changing this to "High Definition Audio Device" - this makes the Headphone jack work perfectly, but the internal speakers tinny and horrible. I have searched the forum and can see plenty of people have this problem, but no clear solution. HELP!! Thanks

I recently installed a Kinivo Bluetooth adapter (BTD-400) on my HP G71-340US laptop (Windows 7 64-bit OS).  Although the bluetooth adapter works as expected, my headphones don?t get any audio output when plugged into the laptop jack.  I checked the Manage Audio Devices / Sound / Playback panel and the ?Independent Headphones? (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) are in working order.  In fact, the Headphones can be seen changing status on the Playback panel when I plug in or remove the headphone connection.  So the hardware seems to be working fine just like before. I ran the Microsoft Troubleshooting tool and it did find an issue with the Independent Headphones but was unable to automatically fix it.  The problem was identified as: Audio device isn't set as default.  However, the "Independent Headphones" are listed as the "Default Communications Device" on the Playback tab. I?m not sure what I need to do next to resolve this issue.  Please advise. Thanks.Jeff

Hello, I recently bought a Flex 2-14 with Windows 8.1 installed and upgraded it to Windows 10 (Education Version). I haven't tried the sound on the 8.1 system - directly upgraded to Windows 10.Symptoms:When I plug in headphones, the notebook doesn't recognize them. When I unmute/mute using the F1 keys sound comes through the headphone - terrible quality, though. When I change the volume using the F2/F3 keys that switches it back to the loud speakers and so on.It seems to me that the laptop doesn't recognize the headphones at all. When I look into the sound devices in the taskbar, there aren't any headphones listed.Failed attempts to solve the problem:Updating the drivers from the Lenovo website.Updating drivers from Realtek directly.Sleeping/waking the notebook.Turning off the multichannel option with the Realtek HD Audio-Manager.I think that's pretty much all I've tried so far. Most of the times the problem just stayed the same. Sometimes it wouldn't switch back to the speaker when pressing the F1/F2/F3 keys, but that is all that my attempts changed so far.I'm thankful for any hints!

Hi guys,

I've signed up here to try and get some help with this issue in particular. After having a quick Google around I've seen that it is a fairly common issue for headphones or earphones to sound tinny on Windows 10 with Realtek HD Audio. However, the only fixes that I could find were driver updates are disabling all sound enhancements. I've tried both of these fixes but yet the problem persists on my end.

Has anyone had this problem before or have any suggestions that may fix the issue? I imagine I'm missing something simple but can't think what it could be for the life of me.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

Hey, I have a flex 14 ideaPad and up until recently everything's been running smoothly audio-wise (when headphones were and were not plugged in), except for randomly a couple of days ago when I plugged headphones into the jack and no sound came through either the headphones or the speakers, although the headphones were detected by the laptop. When I unplugged them sound would come through the speakers again. I tried again with a different set of headphones but the problem reoccurred which lead me to believe the problem is with the laptop, after searching for solutions online I decided to delete and then reinstall the audio drive (Realtech HD Audio Manager). This fixed the problem for a couple of days but now the same problem has returned. I am confused as to whether this is a hardware/software based problem as when I reinstalled the driver it did solve the problem so it couldn't really be hardware related. Would anyone know what the problem is? Should I just keep on deleting and reinstalling the driver? Again the headphones are detected by the laptop, they do not appear as their own playback device though (is this always the case?) Thanks, Tiernan

I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 n-278sa laptop. It comes with a single 3.5mm port which is used for both audio out and line in. The laptop will work fine when outputting sound through the jack and a pair of headphones. However when i try to use the same port as a line in to record sound from an external device i am having some problems. I am trying to connect my mixer to the laptop using a standard lead, red & white one end and 3.5mm jack on the other. At first I was not getting any change whatsoever under the Recording tab in Sound settings. It just says 'not plugged in' under the microphone. After doing some research I found that the lead I was using, a 3 section plug, would not work and that was the reason there was no change when i plugged it in. I bought a 4 section plug & eureka, the laptop recognised the lead & showed this on the Recording tab. I thought my problem was sorted but this was not the case at all. As soon as I plug the red & white end of the lead into the output on the mixer, the laptop screen displays the 'not plugged in' message again as though I have unplugged the lead at the 3.5mm jack end. This makes no sense to me whatsoever?!? How can it recognise the lead is plugged in with no problems but then go back to not recognising it as soon as the other end is plugged into an external output?! Surely there must be a way of rectifying this as currently its impossible to record any sound on the laptop from... I have a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 motherboard with on-board sound by Realtek, and my case is Thermaltake's "Element G".

I connected the front panel audio cable to the designated connection on the motherboard, however, whenever I plug-in my headphones, the stereo is reversed! Meaning that the headphone for the Right ear is playing the audio channel for the Left ear, and vice versa.

I end up having to wear my headphones in reverse to enjoy correct stereo sound.

I checked the front panel audio connection to the motherboard, thinking that maybe I plugged it in the wrong way or something, but apparently there is only one way to plug it in.

My first guess was that this was a design flaw with the case, and that they mixed up the audio channel connections in the front panel. However, when I plugged my headphones DIRECTLY to the REAR audio jack, it's exactly the same story!

The fact of the matter is that the on-board audio is mixing up the stereo channels! I actually remember that on my previous computer with on-board audio it was the same exact problem.

1) Is this a known issue with on-board sound cards in general?

2) Most importantly, is there any way I can fix this in Windows 7? Reverse the stereo channels so that they are outputted correctly?

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Front audio headphone jack reversed stereo...

Never mind. I tried a different pair of headphones and there was no problem. Apparently my cheap "Sony" headphones were just defective.

Hi there,

I have an Asus G 50vt, a few days ago I had it hooked up to a stereo system and tripped on the wire connected to the Audio jack. The Headphone jack now has half of the head stuck inside and I was unable to remove it.

I am wondering if there is a way to reassign the headphone output to the Line in or Mic in jacks?
[/B]
Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Changing Audio Jack output (from headphone to Mic in/line in)

I know you can do that, I have seen it with some creative programs, im not too sure if your asus will do that, but I think the easiest option is to get that headphone jack out. you'd be surprised how easy it can be once you open your laptop up. another option (i would think - but try last) would be to get some super glue (only a little bit) and try to stick something to that headphone output to pull it out. - i was about to suggest soldering something, but dont worry about that, small amount of superglue might be the way to go alternatively buying an external sound card might be an option $20US

Hello all, firstly; apologies for any headaches caused, however, until I buy a capture card I'm recording gameplay through a camera (the quality to my surprise isn't bad either). However picking up the audio requires me to turn up the TV volume quite a lot and also the mic (on my headset) to 100 + 20dB boost in Control Panel > Sound > Recording. As you can imagine, audio is average at best.

So, a cheap solution I thought would be to buy something like this, but I'm not entirely sure it'll work?

If the above will work (or you can link me to something that does what I'm wanting), I want to actually listen to the TV audio through my headsets headphones. A simple solution here would be to tick "Listen to this Device" in Control Panel > Sound > Recording, however that also means listening to my voice as well (which I find very offputting).

3. in order for the application to record the game audio as well, I have to send the audio to the graphics card.
4. graphics card doesn't have a headphone jack, but the audio is sent from my graphics card to my monitor, which does have a headphone jack.

so I would like to be able to send the audio to both the graphics card and my audio device (headphones) simultaneously. is there any hope for me?

Answer:Inspiron 15 3000 audio jack cant detect headphone

Hello. To test the headphone jack switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).2. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
If there is still only buzzing even with the native driver, test using other headphones. If still no luck then probably hardware failure. Contact tech support for repair if under warranty.
If it works okay with the native driver then the Realtek driver is buggy. Try a different version of the driver. If you need help with that reply back with the full model name (something like "Inspiron 11 3147", etc) and which operating system it has.

My older laptop with Realtek adapter did that. I'm not sure if it's something that Windows did or the Audio driver did. Any ideas how can I get it to switch automatically?

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.

Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

This doesn't always happen, but I've noticed a few times on my T440p that when I have headphones plugged in, sounds comes out of the speakers. The headphones are functional and fully plugged in, yet no sound comes out of them, and the sound comes out of the speakers. I've fixed this multiple times by unplugging the headphones and plugging them back in. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, have you been able to fix it? The reason it is a problem for me is that it distracts those working around me. Thanks. (my problem differs from this one, where sounds comes from both the headphones and speakers)

Look for a multistream option in the Realtek audio control panel. Make sure it's set to unify headphones and speakers.Alternatively, if you want audio to only come out of the headphones and not switch dynamically, go to the Sound control panel in Windows, and set headphones as default.

I love everything about my carbon x1 except for the headphone/microphone jack audio out. The sound that comes out when I plug in any standard 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo plug sounds terrible (headphones, speakers, etc). Any particular reason for this or anyone else experiencing a similar problem? Is this jack even supposed to be used for standard headphones or what? Do I need headphones with a microphone built in to get better quality sound? Thanks!

Answer:carbon x1 headphone jack audio quality sounds terrible

Hi, bayern2668

You shouldn't need headphones with a microphone to get this port to work correctly. The reason for the symbol depicting both headphones and a microphone is to demonstrate that it supports both. On older machines, there were two separate ports for these devices, but they have since been combined into one.

I would firstly recommend making sure both the BIOS and the audio drivers are up to date for your machine. The latest BIOS for your machine came out about a week ago and can be found here. The audio driver is not as new, but is still pertinent, and can be found here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Im trying to record from my piano to my W530 using a 3.5mm audio jack, but the W530 will not recognize input, only as a headphone jack unless a 3.5mm microphone is plugged in. can it be set as input manually?

Answer:W530 set Audio jack to input

Hi Fullmetal99012

No. The 3.5mm audio jack are not able to act as line-in. You could try getting an audio splitter (may not work) or a proper third party USB sound card.

Front headphone jack is now assigned as a communications device (basically call-center style headphones & mic).  I am unable to use this jack for regular headphones any longer.  I am unable to change the assignment back to simply 'headphones' -- the original setting when the PC was manufactured by HP.  Also, Beats Audio (and its Control Panel) no longer works and HP has no software download for my PC for it ("cannot find .startup file!").  How do I reassign the front 3.5mm headphone jack to be what it used to be and how do I get Beats Audio from HP if their support website doesn't even let me choose the software?

There are some steps in it that may help you.  The best thing you can do because there are no Windows 10 drivers available for you at this point, is to do your Windows Updates and the HP Support Assistant updates. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating. If this reply resolves your issue, please share the good news! I can't get my new T410 to recgonize any sort of input connected to the combination audio jack. I know that on a Mac you can set the jack to be used for input or output, but the "SmartAudio" interface is awful and I can't find such a setting. Does anyone know how I could use it to record a line level source with a regular old 3.5mm cable? Should I just buy one of those TRRS to TRS splitters?

Answer:Use T410 audio jack for line input

My Dad used to use the laptop that me and my Mom share, and he did something to the settings on the computer (I don't know what, or else I would have fixed it myself.) which allow you to use a USB mic, and he disabled the microphone jack on the computer.
I really want to find out how to change it, because I'm planning on doing TF2 livestreams, and I need the mic to do so, and if I can't find a way to fix this, then I'm going to either have to use one of the crappy USB mics we have, or I'm going to have to convince my Dad to let me use his 300$ mic, which won't be easy. :/

My audio jack has suddenly and inexplicably failed. Before this point, whenever I plugged in my headphones, they would be detected immediately and the computer would switch to that output. Now, when I plug them in, not only do they not produce sound, they are not recognized by the computer. No message telling me I've plugged in a device. Nothing in the sound section of the control column telling me I've got something in the jack. Nothing. This is exceptionally problematic.

I have a HP ZBook 15 G2 and i can not get my SESCOM 3.5 to XLR adapter to resister as a recording device.  My first generation ZBook 15 works fine with this adapter but the new version does not.  Although it does register an IPhone earbud/mic just fine.  I use it to track audio directly into Premiere Pro CC.  Need some help!

A student has broken off part of the plug for headphones in the front audio input jack.  We'd like to use the back input jack, but the computer thinks something is still plugged in.  Is there a way to disable just the front audio input jack?

Hello everyone,

I want to know if you can run an audio output and input at the same time to record to my HDD with the built in Win7 SoundRecorder?

I have been trying to record (unsuccessfully) streaming Sirius internet radio using my JRivers MC v17, and while it will record, the resultant file will not play, either with MC or WMP. And the file size is always 4kb, no matter how long i record for.

So i found Audacity software which will let you do this:

Tutorial - Recording Computer Playback on Windows - Audacity Manual

(scroll down to the Loopback cable section)
But i want to know if you can do it with the installed SoundRecorder. Now I should say that i will be using the output from my Audioquest Dragonfly DAC, which is installed via a USB port, not the lime green output. I will unplug my powered Mackie monitors and hook up a small 3.5mm patch cable.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Answer:Can you use the audio output and input jack at the same time?

You have RealTek PC audio. Have the "Stereo Mix" set as the default recording device and you will be able to directly record streaming audio with Audacity. Nothing else is needed.

You can probably do it with all the extra equipment, but its not needed and can really get in the way for recording streaming internet audio.

I have Goldwave and use that for the same thing, but Audacity will record from the Stereo Mix so that's all you need.

I had to wipe my original install due to nasty virus... I've rebuilt my machine, Windows 7 I have the Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD driver installed, 8.32.23.5, dated: 6/5/2012 I will get an initial pop/click out of the built-in speakers when it tries to play something, but nothing else When I connect headphones up, everything is playing properly Have I disabled the speakers somehow with an Fn +?  The speakers off button is not lit. I can't find anything in BIOS that shuts off the speakers Thanks,Branch

Answer:W520 - headphone jack audio works, but not built-in speakers after wipe & reinstall

Hello branchh,

I understand that this can be frustrating for you.
This is the driver you need for you audio, you can download it from here:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014918

This should get your speakers and audio up and running again.

Hope this helps,

Alex

So I have 150 OptiPlex 5050's, and a Windows 10 image deployed via WDS. I have the latest (8073) Realtek audio driver from the Dell site added to my WDS server, and when a machine is imaged the driver is installed. However, it doesn't install the Maxxaudio Waves application and services so when headphones are plugged in to the front jack Windows doesn't detect it and route the audio to the front jack.
If I install the DUP manually all the software is installed and the jack detection works fine, but if I run the DUP silently as a startup script I get the driver but not the Waves software. I have also tried running the Waves MSI that is installed with the driver, both scripted, through Group Policy and manually, but this also fails to install correctly.
I am assuming this has something to do with the reboots required after installation, but I can't manually install the driver on 150 PC's I need to automate it somehow.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a workaround? I just need the headphone detection to work properly!

I’m usually terrible at doing my fair share of posting solutions on the internet but found time for this one.  Come on Dell!  My wife just bought me this great new XPS for Christmas and the headphone jack first requires me to tell the laptop that there is a headphone plugged in to work…..then the menu disappeared altogether and the headphone jack was useless.   My kid’s (2 year old) ipad seems to have no issues detecting a headphone plugged in and he laughs at daddy struggling with his new laptop.  Solution:  I gave updating and rolling back drivers provided by Dell and went to the Realtek site and downloading their drivers and installing.   (HOME > Downloads > Computer Peripheral ICs > PC Audio Codecs > High Definition Audio Codecs > Software).  I at least got the headphone jack to work again,  but will apparently just have to deal with the “MaxAudioPro” menu that appears and asks me what I just stuck into the headphone jack.  I verbally say “well MaxAudioPro, it is a headphone jack with a image of a headphone next to it,  what do you think I plugged in?”
Again,  Come on Dell.  Fairly steamed here.  ….brand new laptop,  I’m not going to return it because it was a very expensive gift, and I won't dedicate time to sit on the phone with tech support because of a home issue, and I don’t need high end stuff.  I just ... Read more

Because they moved to the combined audio port, they removed the option to turn off the popup.  So you will likely see that continue.  It can be useful if you use multiple devices, such as External Speakers so you can set preferences for each device.
One thing about the process I find irritating is having to select the OK button, even when the popup shows the correct device.  They need to allow the ability to just use the enter key or any key to continue the process if the correct device is already selected..

I purchased my laptop about a month ago and just over a week ago my internal speakers stopped working and instead just make a very quiet popping/cracking sound when audio is being played. My headphone port still works perfectly tho. Every so often the speakers will start working again randomly but always eventually stop working again. I'm guessing it is a hardware issue and plan on sending it back under warranty but just wanted to make sure as happened very randomly.Cheers

I have a T500 - 2081CTO, and in the last week or less, the headphone jack has stopped working. There was a windows update recently so I'm assuming that's the culprit. I typically let it do it's auto-update thing without paying much attention, so I don't know what exactly changed or why it would kill the headphone jack. I've tried looking for Conextant drivers, but those don't seem to have changed since 2011. Win8 and the T500 has always been a bit flaky, but this at least has always worked. How can I test that it's the software and not a hardware issue? And if it is software related, what do I need to fix it?

Answer:Win8/T500 headphone jack stopped working. Conextant Audio Software issue?

Following the suggestion of my beloved brother, I stepped back through restore points and found one 2 weeks ago where sound still works. Since that time, I had installed a Java Dev Kit, SVN, redistributable C++, pando media booster, and Firefox. I'm leaning towards PMB being the culprit, but it's hard to say exactly. Windows critical updates (the first step back) didn't change anything.

I am one of those unfortunate souls with a laptop that has a single jack both for audio output and microphone input. When I plug a lapel mic into it, the computer doesn't even notice it's there, and keeps making me use its crummy internal mic. How do I persuade it to check to see if maybe I have an external mic plugged in? If I had a dedicated mic input jack, I am fairly confident it would work.

I've heard a lot of people struggle with this single-jack thing. What do I do? Thanks.

Recently got an S440 and whenever I plug in earphones to the audio jack they are not recognised. I have done a hardware scan on the built in Lenovo programme and all is fine there. Going onto 'playback devices' I am told that no headphones are plugged in (When they physically are), I've installed the most recent (Jan) driver for Conextant Smart Audio HD but this has made no difference. I was wondering if anyone could help me, thanks.

I just purchased a new toshiba satellite laptop and I'm having a problem with the headphone jack. When i plug into the headphone jack the sound isn't routed from the speakers so the sound stays in the speakers and the headphones get nothing. All the forums i've seen about this have been for linux but i'm running vista, any help on how to correct this?

Hey everyone! Sorry to post another question, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere, unfortunately :(
As you can see by the title, I have a problem with my headphone jack. What happens, is whenever I plug in my earphones (I've tried using a couple different pairs, the problem still persisted) I automatically get that blue screen with a sad face, that says that Windows ran into a problem and that it has to restart. What I wanted to ask of you, is there a way to fix this? I'd really appreciate any insight onto this problem, and if you can help me figure it out, it would be much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read this :)

edit; Probably should have made it clear that this problem started happening a few days ago, it was fine beforehand!

Answer:Headphone Jack Problem

Reinstall the audio drivers.

I have tried 3 different stereo headphones plugged into the green headphone jack and they all have the same problem.  When I push the plug all the way in, I only have sound out of one headphone.  If I back the plug out about a 1/4 of way out the sound comes out both earphones.  These headphones work fine on my other laptop.  Has anyone else experienced this problem.  Any advice on if I can fix this myself?  I am going out of country for a month and can not send this back until I come back in December.

Answer:S10 Headphone jack problem

This s definately problem of jack of laptop - pins are in wrong place. You can't fix it by yourself, you'll have to send it to Lenovo.

I don't know how it happened, but the headphone jack on my dell computer got ****** up. I probably kicked it or something, I don't know. All I do know is that it'll now only play audio out of the left channel. I can try to jingle it around to play out of both, but the second I take my hand off, it's lefty again.
Please, can someone help? This was one of my main gripes with the old crappy computer I had and this one is too new to be going through this crap all over again.
