Y460 Unresponsive without forced reboot

Question: Y460 Unresponsive without forced reboot

I purchased a Y460 last month and am experiencing an issue that is becoming more common. I will leave my laptop running for a bit and return to it in sleep mode---no problem, I jiggle the mouse and give it a second... The issue is the laptop increasingly is unresponsive. The mouse curser moves around but no ther input is registered; as in no keypress or mouse button. Cntrl-Alt_Delete is useless and I am left with no alternative but to hard-shut-down the computer. (Hold power button 5 seconds) After I power back up it behaves normally. This has happened in every power scheme, on A/C and battery, both integrated graphics and 5650 running. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Y460 Unresponsive without forced reboot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Y460 Unresponsive without forced reboot

could be driver issue. try to re-install power management, graphic card drivers first.
then check system logs for errors ( right click my computer > manage > event logs )

ps : check the issue persists on safe mode.

Hi,I have recently had the problem of my laptop not responding after leaving it alone for awhile, then the screen flashes and there is an indicator that states the display driver has malfunctioned. This has happened multiple times. Not sure on the next course of action. Also how often should drivers be updated? Thanks.

Answer:Y460 unresponsive after being left alone

Hi Saurus, please check Drivers & Downloads page and update your drivers if newer versions are available,http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=955740 first UNinstall in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, then reinstall  Energy Management Driver and appropriate Graphics/Display Driver anyway...hopefully it solves both your problems...  and please reboot your Y460 prior to installing new drivers, good Luck... Hi Everyone, I have an Ideapad Y460 from December 2010. Of course, it has the ATI discrete card and intel integrated graphics. Certain times, usually directly after I turn the computer on, I cannot get the graphics processor to switch. The hardware button on the front does not work, and even right clicking ATI Catalyst Control Center -> Configure Switchable Grahpics and explicitly clicking the graphics processor I want to use simply does nothing. Currently, I have to reboot every time to get this to work. It's a big hassle, and I was wondering if anyone might have any clue as to the reason or a fix? Thanks!- Chase Meadors

Answer:Ideapad Y460: Switchable graphics sometimes refuse to switch; must reboot

You can set you switchable graphics from dynamic to static in bios, once set like this you can right click on the desktop to change between dedicated graphics or Intel graphics. You should leave it set this way in any case. Can I disable Switchable Graphics?

Question: Forced Reboot

Windows 7.
Numerous times I have tried to reboot my computer, because it?s running slow, or sluggish. When I close all open files, and try to reboot, I get message saying something is running, do you want to force the program to shut down.
How can I find out what is running?
After reboot the computer runs faster.

Answer:Forced Reboot

Check task manager and view processes...When asking you to force shut down there is a list behind it saying waiting for program(s) services to stop:
Check if there is any programs in the list and end its process in the task manager....
If you don't see anything, just wait for about 5 minutes.
If that didn't work, force shut down and remove all crap software from your computer.
REDUCE software killing process timeout:
Go to desktop--->Right click--->New--->Shortcut--->Type this:
Code:
shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f
---->Next-->finish.
Now launch it.
#2nd way:
+ R -->Type Regedit.exe --->Enter---> UAC Prompt click yes---->Keep expanding this path:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Should look like this:

I kept my computer when I was 'reorganized' out of my job. My problem is that EVERY time I use it, at some point during the session (unless it's a very short one) I get this popup message:

"services.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x606cbaec" referenced memory at "0x00040328". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

'OK' button and 'Cancel' button"

(NOTE: the instruction 'numbers' can be different, but always start with "0x606")

If I click on either OK or Cancel, a one minute countdown begins, after which the computer reboots. There is NO WAY to stop this process. I have found that I can ignore the message and wait until I am finished with whatever I'm doing to click on one of the buttons, but I still have the same restart and shut down process.

I have researched this issue all over the Microsoft website, but have not found anything that works. I suspect that it may be caused by my computer having an enterprise license of XP, but even so, the computer itself is still a legal holder of an XP license.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Answer:Forced shutdown and reboot of XP

Welcome to TSG CAgirl

If we follow the following article's solution, then only a repair installation or in-place upgrade can fix this problem.

Services.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize (0xc0000006). - How To Fix This Error

Most of the sources on the net say the same thing, so I think that the solution is really that. This article from Microsoft Knowledge Base will help you in doing so:

Method 2: Reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD
To reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

3. You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen that appears:

I don't know if it's the right place but I hope so

Recently I've been working in word and then suddenly the computer started to shutdown and install some update. After that it rebooted and restored everything (much like after hibernation). Why did this happen? Shouldn't I get some sort of info that the update requires the system to reebot and let me decide WHEN I want that to happen? Is it some new microsoft policy to do that?
My updates are set to automatically download and install.

well under the settings given when you use automatically download and install the group policy editor default is to warn you 5 minutes prior to an automatic reboot, you can however turn this off if you have access to group policy editor which is available in professional, ultimate and enterprise

It can be well awkward if your not paying attention, in fact I was in the middle of a raid playing WOW with a few mates and my computer decided it was going to reeboot then once back to desktop it proudly announced it had installed updates

let me know if you want to turn this option off

Hallo MG's
This is my first post here at Major Geeks, but I have been visiting this site off and on for years. This is the first time I've had an issue that I could resolve myself by reading your forums.

My problem goes something like this:
Every few hours my computer tells me there has been an error with services.exe and that 'NT AUTHORITY\System' says I have to reboot.

I can just push the window aside and continue along my merry way without any problems, but if I press OK it gives me a 60 second countdown before my computer is rebooted. The full error message is:

"This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUSTHORITY\SYSTEM

Message: The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with staus code -1. The system will now shut down and restart"

I searched the web for similar errors but mostly came up with status code 128 errors which were sassers and the like. I did some scans with Stinger etc but to no avail.

I have read through the forum
'READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support' and followed all the steps, but I still get that error. I was hoping could help me out. Attached is all the results of all the virus/malware programs. They didnt turn anything interesting up. The only thing was PandaScan flagged some cookies that it would delete for me.

Answer:Computer is forced to reboot every 4 hours

Thanks for the lightning quick response D3m3nt3d. I tried running Spy Sweeper, but I didn?t work. I got all excited because it found a 'potential root kit' ... but a few hours later I received the same error "services.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
Would you like to: Debug Send Error Report Don't Send"

Ohh yeah ... one thing to note. I tried running 'Spy Sweeper' in safe mode but it was unable to scan.

I ran another HJT ... attached is the file. Just to make life interesting I ran it with the aforementioned error message showing.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hello:

Earlier today I had a forced reboot. Checked Reliability History to discover the following:

The zip file you uploaded is empty. Please try dm_log_collector again.

Also, if C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP is there, zip it up then upload to a file sharing site like OneDrive and post a link to it here.

I was going to try to duplicate the situation, but it wouldn't do it so here is what "has" happened(s).
Occasionally I change my desktop picture & when I've rebooted, along the top of the screen, it says words to the effect " Do you want to wait for the program to shut down & then by the bottom, it says Force Reboot cancel.
The first time it happened, several days ago, it ended up rebooting before I had a chance to read the full page. Earlier today when it happened, it mentioned losing something if it wasn't saved.
If this is normal behavior for W7,ok.
Some of the desktop pictures have come from desktop nexus. Other are just screenshots I've saved.
I'm only bringing this up because I'm curious, its no big deal, thank you.

Hi, I went through all of the Read and Run Me thread and pretty sure I did it all correctly. My problem probably started 2-3 days ago when I was about to link my wireless printer at school to my computer. I got two error messages that popped up:

1. Services and Controller app has stopped working

2. Windows has encountered a critical problem and will shutdown in 1 minute

After the computer restarted the same errors appeared and it shutdown again. At this point I decided to try and boot into Safe Mode with Networking to try and research the problem online. When the computer booted into Safe Mode with Networking the same error messages popped up and the computer was again forced to reboot.

I later discovered that connecting to the internet was what was causing the errors and am now able to boot into Normal Mode as long as I disable the WiFi.

A few days prior to all this I got a virus pretending to be an Anti-virus program; I think it was Security Suite. I have had these fake programs before and was able to get rid of them in the past so I just ran Malwarebytes and Spybot in Safe Mode and thought it had done the job as my computer was fine for a couple days.

Hopefully this is the correct section for the question. I recently built a gaming PC, and ever since I got it together, I've been experiencing constant problems. When I start up the computer for the first time of the day, it's completely unusable. If I try and run any games, they run at 15fps. Even Firefox is very sluggish. Usually, I need to reboot 5-10 times before I get a "good boot". If I restart, and get the motherboard splash screen and my USB devices light up immediately or within a few seconds, and windows loads quick, it's good, and I can run my games at 60fps, all programs run smooth, everythings great. If the BIOS splash screen takes awhile to pop up and/or Windows loads slowly, I'm forced to restart again and again and again until it loads fast, or else my programs are completely unusable. The problem also occurs if I let the computer go to sleep at any point. As soon as I wake it up, the lag is so bad I struggle to even close out of whatever program I was using. Sometimes when I reboot, the computer takes FOREVER to even get back to the BIOS splash screen. This is what I have observed, comparing how long it takes the splash screen to pop up after I power the computer on or reboot it, and how the computer acts each time:
2-3 seconds, it's perfect. Windows loads quick, games run 60+FPS on highest settings, everything runs great.

My machine reboot last night, likely due to an update that got pushed out, and now I can no longer click on the start menu. Windows key does not pull it up either. Also, the volume button in the bottom right of the screen, I cannot click on that either. I can right click on it though, and pull up volume rocker, but left click does not do anything. Running 10074. Anyone else having issues, or have any suggestions for me?

By forcing reboot, some system files might be corrupted. You can try from Admin Command prompt, copy and paste, and press <ENTER> to run:

Try this:

1. Dowload the free version of Driver Cleaner Pro.

2. Download but don't install the latest drivers for your video card. Save it to your desktop.

3. Uninstall your Nvidia drivers.

4. Reboot your system into Safe Mode and use Driver Cleaner Pro. if it doesn't find anything Nvidia that is quite okay.

5. Reboot your sytem into normal mode and install the latest drivers from Nvidia.

* Let us know of the results.

Hi there. I'm new to bleeping computer so I'll try to explain as best I can the problem that I'm having.

Yesterday while using Microsoft word, my laptop (Dell Vostro 1700) stopped responding. The weird thing was that I was able to move the mouse still, though clicking on things did nothing, and winamp was still running and playing music. Nothing else was responding though, I couldn't Alt-Tab to anything, Alt-F4 didn't work, neither did the windows button, Ctrl-Esc didn't work and even Ctrl-Alt-Del had no effect. In the end I was forced to power down the laptop by holding the power button down. Restarted fine and a few hours later it did the same thing, so this time I used the stop button (on the front of my laptop) which stopped winamp from playing music. When I did this the mouse stopped responding so I couldn't even move it around and I was again forced to power down the laptop.

I'd first check your Event Viewer for errors around that time. Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Open up the Windows logs section and check the Application and System logs for errors around the time of the freezes.

You also may want to check the Reliability Monitor for events that happened on that day. Go to Start and type in "perfmon" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Expand the Monitoring Tools and click on Reliability Monitor.

Finally, you can get a quick performance report on your system by going to Start and typing in "perfmon /report" (without the quotes) and pressing Enter. Let us know what you find and we can move on from there.

Using Windows XP Professional 2002 SP 2

I made the mistake of letting someone else use my PC while I wasn't around to make sure they weren't going to do something unintelligent. Turns out, they clicked a link which forced Adobe Reader to open and install some kind of trojan. I instantly started getting random and fake "anti spyware" popups telling me I needed to buy such and such. I immediately ran malwarebytes, which found about 9 infected files, and deleted them. The popups stopped, but as soon as I rebooted I received a message, after the Windows boot up screen, but before the logon screen, that said wmiprvse.exe was not found, skipping Autocheck. I thought it was odd, but didn't think too much about it.

I noticed after that reboot that instead of the usual 4-5 svchost.exe 's that task manager picks up, I've been seeing between 7 and 8, with one or two running at a particularly high memory usage level. I thought that was odd too, but I wasn't sure what to make of it. Fast forward maybe 6 hours of normal usage, I got a sudden blue error screen for about 2 seconds, I didn't have any time to read what it said, but it forced my computer to reboot. This time, again after Windows boot up, but before the logon screen, I got an error message, but this time it said msln.exe was not found, skipping Autocheck. I've never seen either of these error messages before the virus so it's starting to get worrisome. I own up to date Norton Antiv... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 on a mission-critical business computer. I have an image of the system from a few weeks ago and I'm trying to decide if I should restore the OS drive from the backup or not. It wouldn't be disastrous to do so since most of the user data is on another drive but it would be considerably time-consuming.

The issue is that a couple days ago I remoted into the machine and encountered issues with Explorer crashing. I couldn't remotely do Start > Shutdown so I remotely did a forced Reboot. (I've since resolved the cause.)

Afterwards, I ran CHKDSK and it found some errors, which it said it corrected. Here's the report it produced (from Wininit in Event Viewer):

Hey,

Well this has got me, it's been happening for a few days, nothing changed or what not. Basically the taskbar just freezes, however when you click on the buttons they still work, it spreads until the whole interface no longer works, things like windows media center and games lock up and forced to reboot. Nothing using up the cpu in task manager etc and I can't see anything in event viewer (although not 100% sure where i'd look)

Any ideas? It happens completely randomly, cant seem to replicate it and im doing different things each times it happens!

Regards,
Tom

Ill have a video soon!

Answer:Interface locking up, sounds looping and forced to reboot

I have been running on my home-built Windows 8.1 PC now for several months without problems. I have a Radeon HD 6570, but in the last few days it has been giving me some strange problems.

At first, sometimes when I wake the computer from sleep it would turn on like normal, but immediately after anything shows on the screen, the monitor switches into "ANALOG - POWER SAVING MODE" as though it were no longer receiving a signal from my computer (which very likely is the case). I had some hotkeys set up for other reasons that give audio feedback, but I found that when this happens they only made sound less than a second after the screen went blank, as though the computer crashed.

And then sometimes, instead of blacking out, it would turn blue (the save color as the Windows 8 BSOD) with scary glitchy horizontal lines through it, as though the computer has tried to BSOD but the display had screwed up before it could.
Now it's started happening randomly, not just when waking up from prolonged sleep. At one point the screen turned to black, then seemed to recover, and Windows gave the classic "Display driver has stopped working and had now been recovered. So I checked the graphics drivers and they are up to date, and I figured I should try rolling then back. After clicking the rollback button in the Windows Device Manager, it flashed black for a second, then normal, and then again as it works when messing with video card drivers. Then it gave me another message about ... Read more

Welcome to the forum!

With a new home-built computer one of the first questions has to be do you have all the latest drivers from the motherboard manufacturer site, like chipset and ACPI? Maybe even the newest BIOS depending what it fixes.

EDIT: Found this on their site: MSI USA - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

Hi,

I'm playing Skyrim and America's Army 3 and FIFA 12. I experience stutters in all games. I built this new computer for Skyrim and was 10 hours into the game until I accidentally found out that a clean install of the Nvidia drivers fixes the problem. Now I need to clean install my drivers every time I reboot in order to be able to run those games without stutter. Clean install fixes it every time and is only needed after a reboot i.e. the problem returns only after a shutdown/reboot. I always keep my drivers up to date, but this problem has persisted since I bought the PC in autumn.

Now I would like to find a real solution to the problem, because its getting tedious to make a clean install after every reboot. Luckily I mostly put it to sleep.

All help appreciated.

P.S. My problem is the same as this guys: http://www.tomshardw...ttering-reboot

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX560 Ti AMP 1 GB

I've been trying to track this down, and fix it, since I built this system 5 months ago. Now I'm getting desperate... when all else fails, ask for help.

Problem: every few days, or occasionally twice a day, my system will become very slow. Programs become unresponsive, (even pulling up the task manager), and it takes about 3 minutes for the system to shut down, and another 15-20 minutes for the system to reboot.

I have tried everything I can think of. I have a minimal set of starup items, (just 3 in msconfig; joystick, audio control panel, and IAStorIcon. I have searched through event viewer, and the only indication I get is that windows logoff took an insanely long time to log off. Scannow indicates no problems.

I have turned off dozens and dozens of services, and still I haven't been able to track this down. I've tried manually quitting and restarting expolorer, manually shutting down each service when it gets slow, but invariably when it happens, I'm stuck with a 15-20 minute reboot, instead of 20-30 seconds.

When it reboots, I get a flashing underline, then it sits on the windows startup screen for the next 12-15 minutes, then eventually boots into the desktop and everything is normal again.

I've turned off all power saving features, and have everything running at full power. I've turned off all schedules (as far as I know) of all events that might otherwise run at regular intervals.

When it becomes unresponsive, everything just gets insanely slow, (except mou... Read more

On starting up my Compaq Presario CQ60-218, I received notification of a virus and whilst attempting to remove it, the laptop shut down to protect itself. I briefly got a blue screen with text advising me of this before it quickly went to a black screen of death with flashing cursor.
I've researched this on various threads and forums but nothing described the exact problem I have. When I tried advice to reboot in safe mode by using Ctrl+Alt+Delete, nothing happens and I get no response from repeatedly hitting the F8 key either, just the black screen.

I've tried various things I've seen recommended, powering off for 10 mins, removing battery, hard reset including 20 sec battery drain etc but nothing worked. I also connected an external monitor which showed nothing thereby I think ruling out graphics card and display issues.

I did find that by hitting F10 key I was able to get into BIOS diagnostics and ran memory test which was passed and then a primary hard disk test which failed within seconds with #1-07 Fail. So could i somehow reset to an earlier state, even if it wiped computer, or is only option an expensive new hard disk?

I'm posting this from a 2nd machine so I do have the option of downloading and using USB to transfer solutions if I can get Compaq to respond.
Grateful for any advice
Thanks

Answer:Can't reboot, black screen, F8 key unresponsive

If you failed the inbuilt hard drive test, it's most likely that your hard drive has failed.
If you're unsure of that, run one of the free diagnostics listed here: HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

I just bought a 250 gB hard drive today for $43 (US)
You'll also need recovery disks for your system. If you don't have them, here's a link for ordering them (US only): Order Recovery Discs (USA)

Yesterday, I started having my computer freeze while I was playing a game. I didn't get a BSOD or any kind of error message. The computer just completely locked up. If a sound was playing, it got stuck. It was completely unresponsive; clicking didn't work, and neither did ctrl+alt+del. I had to turn off my surge protector's power or hold down the PC's power button to turn it off. It seems pretty random. At first I thought it might be a problem with the hard drive the game was on, but then I tried a game that's on another hard drive, and it worked fine for quite a while until it eventually froze the computer as well. Plus, I've already had an experience with hard drive failure, and I always got a BSOD in that situation, unlike now. Also, Hard Disk Sentinel says all my hard drives are at 100% health. My next guess was the graphics card, but I'm not getting artifacts or noticeable framerate drops. I did just have my display driver stop responding and immediately recover while I had a Twitch stream playing at the same time I was playing Skyrim. Firefox crashed, I restarted it and the stream, then I went back to playing Skyrim and the computer froze shortly thereafter.

I found another thread with someone having a similar problem. They were asked to post a Speccy snapshot and the results from a MiniToolBox test. I've already taken care of that, so I'll post those now.

I have a retail version of win8 pro. All updates have been applied. I have a 128g SSD and several SATA3 hard drives in my system. Often I'll be working on my PC and a program like photoshop or thunderbird or even explorer become unresponsive and greys out and sometimes if I wait long enough it comes back but only for a short while before it happens again.

Many times it will happen when I am accessing the file structure, i.e. file > open and other times it will happen in an explorer window when trying to access a random folder, i.e. I can browse the c:\windows folder but not the c:\windows\system32, but after waiting a bit it shows up.

Sometimes this happens with other (non system) drives.

Also, when I try to open task mgr or event viewer or many built in OS executables I immediately get an error stating:

c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe (or mmc.exe, etc.) The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a short while. It may even be that this only happens after coming back from sleep but I haven't spent enough time in front of the machine post-boot but pre-sleep to know for sure.

I have had some intermittent issues with coming back from sleep where either the monitors (video card is HD7870 and mobo is ASRock Z77 Pro 3 - firmware up to date) never initialize or I get the splash login screen but my usb keyboard doesn't recognize input to allow for the password prompt and the mouse cursor moves ... Hi, apparently I have some suspicious stuff on my computer. Like the title says, I have the Google (EDIT: and other search engines) redirection to ads problem in Firefox. On top of this, though, Chrome is unresponsive on startup (the "kill pages" box comes up, but isn't able to do anything). Also, every so often Windows will say that some host process has become unresponsive and will stop it. I ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and it was able to fix about 15 problems, but the issues all still persist.

Could anyone give me a hand? Thanks!

Hi, I bought a Y460 0644 - 4gu from the US. I have since moved to the UK. From the start I found it to be slow, but i thought it must be due to the anti virus which came supplied with it. I uninstalled it, it has been running decent, except for that it keeps crashing every once in a couple of days after it goes to sleep mode or flash crashes. Also overheats quite a bit. Really disappointed with the product. However, lately it seems to have become even slower. Painfully slow. There is not much installed, only general stuff and a couple of games. I checked my system properties just today and i was shocked to find just 2 GB ram?! I am pretty sure i ordered a system with 4 GB! I am not sure what can be done now, is there a place I can look for my system's configuration as I have ordered it on the lenovo site? I have my serial numbers and stuff. I just need to check why i got a 2 GB system when i paid for 4, and then what can be done about it as I have moved to the UK! Thanks!!

Your Y460 might be overheating. Run HWMonitor on the background, play games a little & then quit. Look at the max temps in HWMonitor program. There are two steps to fixed overheating problem:-Use a compressed air can to clean out the dust on the heatsink.Re-apply thermal paste (when no. 1 alone not enough to fixed the overheating).BTW, what is your notebook specification?

Question: Y460 partition

Lenovo Y460 originally  comes with C: and D: (hidden partition for OKR) right. Let's say i shrunk C: and created a new partition named E:  so now i have C: D: and E: if i would like to reformat using OKR in the future, will OKR overwrite E: and reconfigure back into factory settings of C: and D: only? means my data stored in E: will gone replaced by C: will OKR works that way? IF not, let's say i've already created E: and i want to reformat with OKR, i need to merge back C: and E: only OKR will works?

Answer:Y460 partition

if you make any changes on volumes, one key recover button and recovery dvds won't work.you need to install windows with the installation dvd which probably you don't have one and lenovo won't send you send even if you want to buy. if you merge e: back to c:, one key recover may work.

Question: Y460 Partition

Hi There My laptop come with 500 gb hd which currently default partion D is 30 gb, HIdden is 200mb and the rest go to the C drive I read from this forum, if i to do shrink the C drive volume, it will cause one key not working for other lenovo model. My laptop one key version is version 7 and Win 7 Home Premium My questions are if i to shrink the C Drive volume to create new partition or extend the extra volume to D driveWill one key not working for Y460 model? If one key will not work, will i be able to do win 7 recovery from the recovery disk that i created using the One Key if the parition size and volume has change from the default setting? Is there a way to shrink the C drive without problems? because 400gb for C drive is just too much and for me, i will never put the data on the C drive because whenever the system failure happen, C drive bound to be formattedLastly, assume i shrink the c drive and create the new partition or extend it to the D drive, when i do the recovery using One Key or Recovery disk, will it restore to the default partition size and volume? Thanks!

Answer:Y460 Partition

first of all you can not extend the volume d, you just have to make new volume.( some applications let you extend the drive, not suggested, under some windows partitions can be deleted ) if you make changes on volumes, one key recover stops working.if one key recover stops working, recovery disks won't work either.if you are aware of this results, you can make partitions easily( right click my computer > manage > disk management > click on c volume : right click and select shrink the disk > follow the instructions. )one key recover and recovery disks won't work if you make any changes on volumes.

I was surfing the net and watching some videos when my laptop froze.I was forced to restart it manually and when I did, the laptop would not start up. Here is what exactly happens:1. Powered on.2. Fan starts, lights all come on, the hard drive activity light is only lit for a split second when the power is turned on, then it goes off and stays off.3. Lenovo start screen, bottom left says f2 for setup and f12 for boot menu.4. The Lenovo start screen almost immediately goes away, screen turns off completely(not a blank, black screen, the screen literally turns off), nothing happens. I still hear the fan whirring and power button is lit along with other lights like battery, camera and volume control, hard drive activity light is still off.5. It stays this way until I manually shut it off. I've searched the internet and so far I've tried draining the power then trying again and loading the boot settings and neither worked. Any information that would enlighten me on my situation and problem is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Question: issue with Y460

Hey guys, first off, thanks for the reading this post! So the first Y460 I recieved a few weeks ago had issue with the monitor when I first turned it on, it was black! So I thought LENOVO would send me a brand new replacement, but no, I had to place a brand new order, and wait again. Talking about horrible customer service. Well the dead on arrival notebook did not deter me from getting another one. But now, this second one, the moniter works but I can not view any videos online. Youtube, yahoo, you name it. Also, the games and the installed camera do not turn on either! I bought the more expensive version of the Y460, so I am not sure if its the connection or what, but I have a MAC and it works great. Please let me know if you can help me with this issue. But this is making me think twice about lenovo products (my first one). Much appreciated!

My Y460 is less than 2 months old. Days ago before I left for a short holiday, I shut down my Y460 which was still working fine, but it was doing some windows update before it shuts down. Right now, Days later, when I am back, I could not bootup my Y460, it keeps saying "A disk read error occurredPress Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" I have restart alot of times and it doesn't work! Help

Answer:Need help urgently for y460

you need to perform clean windows installation to fix the issue. try to use novo button. ( one key recover button ) if it doesn't work, try to use recovery disks, if you don't have any, you can use microsoft windows installation dvd then enter your serial number from the stick under the laptop. but if you do that with microsoft dvd, one key recover system may not work. you can also ship your laptop back to lenovo support line.

Question: Y460 CPU Whine

I received my Y460 last week and have noticed that it emits a faint, high pitched whine when the CPU is idle.  After a bit of research, it seems like this is a common problem for laptops with the i-series processors.   Is this a problem that Lenovo is aware of?  Is there a reasonable chance of it getting fixed if I RMA?

Answer:Y460 CPU Whine

Update:  None of the "fixes" posted online alleviate this problem.  The whine is very apparent when the CPU is idling and goes away immediately when it is under load. I will be calling Lenovo on Monday to RMA.

1. After I upgraded the display driver and install the Catalyst Control Center(ATI) 11.3, the temp. of my CPU and GPU have increased, around 80 even not in gaming, also when I connect another monitor with VGA, the individual monitor (connected with VGA) turns black (just like disconnection, all items returned to the notebook monitor) and turns normal, it switches occasionally and it is so annoying. 2. After a period of time, the whole computer freezed and do nothing. No matter how I tried, press the power button(attempt to turn the computer into sleep mode), or press "Ctrl+Alt+Del", it still freezes at that instant, and the cursor is not working, too. BTW, if I lost my receipt of purchases, but I have register on the warranty in lenovo official site, can I take it to the repairing center to fix it?VERY URGENT AND PLZ HELP.

Hi all, I've just received a Y460 with the switchable graphics. My last laptop died as a result of overheating and I'm kind of paranoid about it now. I was wondering what the safe operating temperatures are for the Y460. I downloaded SpeedFan to monitor the temps and bought a cooling pad (Ultra..don't know the model number, but it's the one with the single huge fan that blows directly onto the bottom of the laptop). I did a little test to see what kind of temps I was getting while playing games, so after an hour of playing Dragon Age at full resolution Speed Fan was giving me temps of 68C right after shutting the game down (around 58C for the processors and 40C for the HDD) and then dropping to 38C a few minutes afterwards. Is this safe or is it running too hot? I have noticed a difference with the cooling fan...the bottom of the laptop is not to the touch, nor does the palm rest get hot while playing high intensity games, but I wasn't sure if it was doing enough Thanks for the help!

Answer:Y460 and temperature

Well, My Y550 runs at 78C with heavy gaming. To give you an idea, processors are built to shut off somewhere around 95C-105C. Your laptop is actually running quite cool. Two things you can do to make your laptop run well: 1) Regularly check air vents for dust build-up, and use a Dust-Off or similar compressed air product to clean it out.2) Check what type of cooling pad you have. If you have one that sucks air away from the laptop, it may put strain on the laptop fan pulling in new air. Honestly, I used to swear by cooling pads, but now most laptops at most need a hard surface to be used on.

I bought this machine around Nov 2010, with 4G of memory Intel i5 processor and 1g of Graphics card(ATI).  I was looking this machine to be high end from graphics stand point and something which will be faster than my work PC T420. I used to own Dell as personal PC and have always worked on Thinkpads as my work machines. I was hoping the ideapad would be notch up in performance and user exeperience, especially with 1G of graphics card. To my disappointement, I have had nothing but issues with this m/c - Graphics cards fails every single time I use this PC. Wireless takes longer than T420 system, which I find ridiculous!! Sometime it takes forever.Overall perfomance starts dragging if I am on it more than 2 hours, battery life has always been issue. I am upto date on my Windows 7 updates and graphic and wireless cards. The PC never came with recovery Windows 7 CD. Why this late in my writing .. ? I had bought Ideapad Y460 with lots of expectation, but has been disappointment. So I continue to use my work PC more oftne than Home PC. but it's coming to a point where it's hard to see my home PC perform poorly and not be able to use. Any suggestion what to do to fix these issues ? Not sure how much lenovo team would be willing to support my issues since it's out of initial one year warrenty (although I bought it on Amex, so techinically I should have extended warrenty). Suggestions welcomed and appreciated !! I am for sure not buying Lenovo ... Question: Y460 SATA, 2 or 3?

Hello everybody,It's been a while since I've been on these forums. Just a quick question since I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm planning to upgrade my HD (5400 RPM, 500 GB) that came with my Y460 to an Intel 520 SSD 480 GB (that I won in their recent giveaway ). It's a 2.5" SSD, so mSATA is out of the question. I have a Y460 - less than one week old - and am unable to properly control its screen brightness.  I can set it, but then it will change on its own, going from 4/10 to 9/10 brightness without my touching anything. Here are the most obvious culprits, and the steps I've taken to rule them out: Windows power management/Lenovo energy management conflict. Currently, I am using battery power.  I am running the Lenovo management setting "Power Saver," which is also set in the Windows power area.  In the Lenovo "details" area for the scheme, the settings are brightness = 4, dim = never, screen off = after 2 minutes (for both battery and a/c).  In the Windows area, I have the same things set. Still...the computer will go from brightness level 4 to up to 9.  When I go into either power management to check it (or just use Fn + up/down), the brightness level will have reset to a standard of 9.  This has happened in different programs or just on the desktop.  It's worst when Firefox is maximized - that's when it tends to go up to 9 - but it's also happened to smaller extents in other programs (up to 6 when using MS OneNote, for example). Similar things happened when I was running on A/C power and using a custom power scheme, but the above is the most controlled condition. Display dimming going haywireI thought this might be a problem with the computer dimming, then overcompensating when I touched the keys and it brightened again.... Read more

Answer:Y460 screen brightness changes on its own

I'm experiencing the identical problem. Power Plan:High Performance Settings for On Battery and Plugged In are the same:"Dim the Display" set to Never After a few minutes without key or mouse input, the display is dimming from 10 to 4. Any ideas how to resolve?

Hello, I have a Y460 with Windows 10. I have had a lot of issues with the trackpad. I will be moving the cursor around the screen when it randomly glitches and moves to a random location and performs a left- or right-click. This results in windows unintentionally being closed, among other problems. I have tried a few drivers from Lenovo's and Synaptics' websites, but they have not solved the problem. Is there something I can do to resolve these issues?

So I bought a refurbished Y460 for school. Everything works great; no complaints except for all the bloatware I had to give the business. Few months later I when I start up a game, specifically Diablo 3 and Borderlands 2, the game will freeze, flicker, and come back every few seconds; even in menus, on the lowest graphical setting and inferior resolution. An alt tab would show an alert saying that the driver stopped responding and had recovered with each flicker.I've tried most everything on this list twice or more: Uninstall / reinstall the gamesUninstall / reinstall Leovo video driversUninstall / reinstall Leshcat's video driversUpdate my biosClean the inside of the case /w an air dusterReapply thermal pasteUninstall / reinstall redistributables I've already talked to tech support and they've said to send it in, however, I have yet to because I'm in school and was waiting for a break...which I don't get. Though my friend has an extra I can use so I might finally do it.Anyway, I made this post as a last ditch effort to see if anyone might have a fix I haven't come accross in my voyage. Also, for those that have sent in theirs with a similar issue, will they be reformatting my hdd. I'm going to back it up anyway...just curious. Thanks in advance-Giovanni

The ac power light stays with no signal (and the same for the battery light, of course). If I plug in the battery and disconnect the AC cord, when I try to turn it on, nothing happens. No signal lights. If I finally try to turn it on with battery AND the ac cord connected, the battery light at the front start blinking orange all the time.  Thanks in advance!

Recently purchased a new Y460 for my girlfriend and the laptop occasionally has had trouble powering on.  It had the same problem this morning, but the usual tricks did not work, and the laptop will not turn on. The problem:  I press the power button, normal power on begins, then suddenly power cuts out after 3-5 seconds.  Think turining on a laptop with no battery charge.  This happens in all combinations of battery and power cable. (Battery/no power cable, Battery+Power cable, No battery/power cable).  Usually i'd just randomly switch which combination I'd try and it would work eventually, but not this morning. Anyone else experience similar issues or have possible resolutions?  I'm thinking its a dry solder joint on the motherboard, since the problem seems completely random. Thanks

Answer:Y460 remove 2nd Gpu from Laptop

Ok well never tried this before but you can see if this works -

Go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Display
Right click on Radeon card and click "Disable this device"
Restart and go back to same location and see if the device is still disabled.

I just received a new Ideapad y460.  The internet connection consistently disconnects after 8 minutes.  The wireless connection to the router stays connected, but the connection to the internet goes to "no connection" with a yellow triangle and exclamation point.  The router is a Linksys RVL200 with latest firmware.  Ipconfig shows an IP address on my LAN, and the correct DNS addresses provided by the router.  I try ipconfig /renew, but get an error message about not connecting to DNS services. This even though the the adapter shows the correct DNS addresses. The only thing that brings the connection back is to "disconnect" and "connect" via the network connection panel. I have tried, eliminating IPV6 services, manually setting the DNS addresses in the adapter, not registering the machine name in DNS, etc.  So far nothing works.  If I can't get it straightened out in a few days the computer will probably be going back to Lenovo.  Any help is appreciated.  I have searced the forum looking for solutions, but so far none of the things I have found work.

Hi All,

I am having BSOD due apparently to atikmpag.sys. Am trying various ways to solve this.
I would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Answer:ATIKMPAG.sys BSOD on my y460

Hiya and welcome to SevenForums!

Code:
BugCheck 116, {fffffa8008604010, fffff880015c5ba4, 0, 2}

Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\atikmpag.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for atikmpag.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for atikmpag.sys
Probably caused by : atikmpag.sys ( atikmpag+5ba4 )
The problem is caused by your graphics driver. Run Display Driver Uninstaller(DDU)
Make sure you tick the Uninstall C:/AMD and C:/NIVIDA folders while you are in DDU when you are done running DDU install your graphics driver again and you should be good to go! This is the guide for DDU: Display Driver Uninstaller: How to use

Remember to remove Catalyst and only install the graphics driver.

Hi, I noticed that there's a 3G sim card slot in my laptop, and reading previous posts in this forum,it seems that the device is disabled due to some IDA policy. However, on the lenovo drivers website, there are drivers for the 3G sim card slot.I am unable to spot the device in Device manager, and do not know if i can use the drivers.I would like to know if the drivers are able to activate the 3G sim card slot? Thanks.

Answer:Y460 3G sim card drivers

Hello mate, Are you sure you've got a 3G modem in there ? Having a card slot doesn't mean having a modem inside. It's just ready to install one. If you can't see the modem in device manager, you sould check opening your computer to see it there is one in.
