Where is my disk space?

Question: Where is my disk space?

Hi I have a 450GB hard drive and had only used up less than half of it.. or so I thought. Yesterday for some reason my disk space had been reduced to 38GB remaining. I ran WinDirStat and it told me my hard drive had 191 GB used space (which means I should have plenty of extra space) but when I right click the drive and look at properties it tells me that I have 416 GB used space! Help what is going on here?

Preferred Solution: Where is my disk space?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Where is my disk space?

Download MiniTool Partition Wizard and check the drive that way. You may have a section of the hard drive not currently associated with a drive letter or you may have a defective hard drive. It's a free program and it will show you right on the screen every part of your hard drive (even if it is not showing elsewhere in other programs).
Also, you should probably run Disk Cleanup from within Windows. That will clear out old temp files.

Here is a link to photobucket showing the recovery D full.

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa389/TheCenter2012/Windows Vista/RecoveryDfull.jpg
And here is a link of what inside the recovery D as i look inside as it said from the HP link above.

Close up pic of the files here the link.

Now is there anyway to solve this problem ?

Answer:Error: Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on Recovery (D:) For Vista,

Hi and welcome

We could use a screen shot of the drive D partition but probably your backups are stored there and you can delete the oldest to free up some space. Make sure you have another before you delete it. That partition is tiny bTW 9 gigs is way too small to be effective.

Hi, Just finished building a new pc, windows 98 installed fine so did some software, but when i go to install most of my games and also 3d max V5 it comes up with errors most of them are about having low disk space for swap files, but i have an empty 80 gig hdd. This seems to mainly be with the .cab files or other large files. Also the games that do install randomly crash straight to desktop which may or may not be connected to this problem. my system is as followsmb = aopen ax4c maxcpu = p4 2.8 800 fsbram = 512 ddr 400hdd = 80 gig (virtually empty)vcard = geforce 2 tiany help would be very gratefull as i need the pc for studying 3d animation.

Answer:low disk space when lots of disk space exists

Have you visited the Windows site to update your OS. There was an update to allow 98 to work properly with disks over 30Gb though I don't recall what the symptoms were.

I recently cleaned my computer with CCleaner and then shortly after, I got this message saying ' You are running very low on disk space on C:. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.'
I'm confused. What I just did was supposed to HELP increase disk space, not to decrease it.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

i wanted to copy a cd image (4.18GB ISO format) from partition F: (NTFS 9GB free) to partition D: (FAT32 12GB free space) and windows gives me that crap there is not enough space and i should do a disk clean up..ok i made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files and i turned it off so i have now 15GB free space on partition D: and yet it tells me there is not enough space..

i tried a trick i thought i can use winrar to archive the ISO image and select the destination folder on the partition i wanna move it to..but at like 80% winrar popped up a message that only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.

Hello to all.

I have a problem with my windows 7 pro laptop that shows only 7,49/100 GB free memmory. I tried to delete all shadow copies and previous versions. Also did chckdsk /f which give me 0 errors, tried to search in hidden and OS files, but there arent any big files, diskcleanup with system files cleaned about 1 gb.
Then I downloaded winDirStat which shoved me that I only have 43Gb of data on my c: drive. I don't have any ideas what could be done to increase free disk space. Please help

Answer:Windows show low disk space, win dir stat shows different space

In My Computer, click the Tools menu then on Folder Options then click the View tab and tick "Show hidden files and folders" then untick "Hide protected system files and folders", click Apply and OK.

Then, go into c:\ windows and delete all the files in blue which statr with a $ symbol. They are only folders that once contained Windows Updates you no longer need to keep. Then scroll down to the Software Distribution folder and to Download. Empty that folder.

Look in Control Panel>Power options and make sure Hibernation is turned off then in System, adjust the size of System Restore so it takes up only 4% of the disk space.

Restart the computer and see hwo much space you freed up.

Am I the only one to notice and complain over this in W8.1.

This morning a new Adobe Flash update has appeared, KB3079777. The update is sized at 17.9mb. Nothing is running on the PC, its idle and with no disk activity. Free space is 55.4GB. I apply the update and free space immediately falls to 54.9gb. This behaviour is consistent with every such patch applied. Now over time, that space will return which suggests that something else is going on here. But what ?

Answer:Free disk space & space used by a single Flash Update.

Looks like it is just me then. Today brought a 4.6Mb W8.1>W10 computability update. My free space changed from 55.2Gb to 54.7Gb.

Sounds about right. Ho hum....

One of my computers is almost out of space on Drive C: so I ran a TreeSize Free scan to find the areas of biggest usage. The single largest chunk was SysPart, followed by Windows, then Users files. Further analysis shows SYSPART actually seems to contain a duplication of everything on the regular C: Drive but I can't see where to access it to delete anything. This computer has 4 user profiles and in the scan, all 4 profiles are listed in C: as well as in SYSPART. Three profiles are listed with duplicate amounts in SYSPART and in C: Drive, while the other one strangely enough has storage in SYSPART and 0GB in the C: Drive.

wrong. It said I had 29.00 GB of disk space available but now it says there's only 21MB available I don't see how this is possible.

I have a computer that has their "c: drive" almost full (221 gb drive). Every time it boots a message comes up saying "Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified." So first I tried adjusting the Virtual Memory BUT, I only have a drive C and a previous drive that is no longer there. So I am not for sure what drive to set my virtual memory to because there is not enough space on C drive with it being almost completely full and the one drive is non-existent. I am sure its a easy fix and im missing a step but i appreciate the help guys   Thanks!

Answer:Low Disk Space "Temporary File Space Error"

I would type Run in the search box. Start it and then in the Run box type %temp%. This will open up the temp folder for the current user. These files are safe to delete. Log in to every other user and use the same command. Once those are deleted, use Ccleaner to clear all the browser cache then set the Paging file to 1.5 times the RAM on the system.

Setting up a new box, Vista sadly to say. Installed MS Office XP Pro and get the following error when closing MS Word ONLY. Excel saves without any errors.

The disk is full. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk. Try one of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs, and windows.
*Save the document on another disk.

I've moved the file location and same error. I cleaned up the drive including removing all restore point except the last one.

Now this thing has a 250 gig drive but it is also used for security in a mini mart with 8 cameras. There are about 145 Gigs of video from the security cameras on this box. At this time I am just setting it up, no cameras are connected, and the security program hasn't been set up yet. I just moved the files from the old drive to this one. BTW the old drive crashed.

I've tried the detect and repair in MS Word and no help. I have uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled and no help and even went into Properties and set the user up on quota with no limits and still no help.

So now I am at a loss and have no idea what to try next. Really don't want to delete the security files because it took 6 hours to transfer them to this computer and unless all else fails this isn't a option I want to use.

Now on the old box, which had XP Pro this, was not a problem so on Vista it should not be either but then Vista is a MS Software so this is understandable. Actually, the old box had a 15... Read more

I have 654 GB space in c . and when i extend it into another drive it shows unallocated disk . when i tried to make a new drive throuh new simple volume it show an error "you cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contain the maxximum number of partition "

Answer:how to create unallocated disk space to free space ..

A hard disk can only contain four partition. They can be either four primary partitions or three primary partitions and one extended partition. An expended partition can contain as many logical drives as there is space and drive letters to accommodate them. The only partition you can extend into the unallocated space is the last one in the partition tablet. If you want to extend any other partition you need to move existing partitions into the unallocated space until the space is immediately after the partition you want to extend. To do that you will need some third party software like partition magic. Stuart

Hi

We just placed a new Dell Dimension. It has a 40 Gig hard drive.

User keeps getting this message:

DISK FREE SPACE HAS DROPPED BELOW THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD. FREE UP SPACE ON YOUR HARD DISK DRIVE BY:

1. BACKING UP YOUR DATA TO A TAPE BACKUP, ZIP OR NETWORK DRIVE
2. DELETE UNUSED FILES

IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHICH FILES ARE SAFE TO MOVE OR DELETE, CONTACT YOUR HELP DESK OR CONSULT YOUR SOFTWARE MANUALS.

This machine has over 30 gigs of free space. It's impossible that there is a disk space issue.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Some sort of mis-communication or setting?

Thanks

Answer:Disk Space Error - 30 Gigs free space

It should be a configuration setting. I'd call Dell if you just got this machine. Their "english" is a little suspect though. It sounds like some hokey Dell software reminding you to back up your drive. When does the message appear? After it boots?

Hello,Can someone please, please, please help me. I have a Windows 7 Pro machine, with 500GB and recently it has been decreasing in hard drive capacity to the point I had only a few GBs left, so I decided to get rid of some large old files - it turns out - the MORE I DELETE THE LESS SPACE IS ACTUALLY FREED UP! As illogical as it may seem, I'm not on crack! Clearly this must be due to some sort of virus since I happened to have carried out a full scan scan  my system (just felt like doing it, not suspecting anything - I have a good habit of scanning every couple of months!) yesterday using AVAST and nothing turned up. However when I did a preboot scan two or three trojans came up which I deleted - only for this problem to come up. What do I do?I now have 0 bits of free space - none whatsoever on my C drive. I neither have a backup copy or recover disk created because I was unable to create a HP Elitbook recovery disk due to some technical issues. Any assistance would be kindly appreciated as I have some very important work to do and can't afford to waste days on end trying to sort this out - I might just throw it out the window on to my car!Thank you once again

Hello,

I have frequently received the "Low Disk Space" error, even after deleting several files on my PC. I went to Settings-System-Storage, and in my "Other" folder it says there's 648GB of space being taken up, but when I click on it, none of the subfolders show that any of them have that many GBs in them. Hi peeps and thanks in advance for any help you can give me! My laptop is doing my head in thanks to its new-found ability to chew up free disk space on my C:/ drive. Not sure if this problem has been on-going for a few weeks or something, but it's come to a head now!! A few bits of info that might be handy: Vista Home Premium 32bit, laptop is about three years old, 160GB HDD partitioned into a C: and a D: (both with approx 70GB total space according to Properties).
The story goes like this:

1) Got low disk space warning pop up (something like 300MB left!) - thought that this was entirely plausible since my wife keeps taking videos of our little baby on her camera and saving them on the lappy!
2) Decided to move some User folders from the C: to the D: and in the process moved about 5GB which then freed up several gig of space on the C: drive. Then I noticed that this was consistently dropping and the HDD light was flickering all the time, even when the laptop was not in use.
3) Updated and ran all the following programs: AVG 2011 Free, CCleaner, CWShredder, Malwarbytes - and nothing untoward reported.
4) Booted into safe mode and ran the programs again and still nothing reported.
5) Accessed VSS records via a command prompt and this was set to UNBOUNDED maximum capacity and showing as 16GB in use on disk, so revised this down to 12GB (a cautious approach, I admit!) and freed up a bit more space but this again is slowly being reduced.
6) Ran WinDirStat and this is showing ... Read more

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

Cheers, Darren (newbie)

Answer:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

Then you may like to free up your computer with this cool disk cleaning software which is specially designed for Windows. The following steps will show you how to clear the junk files or useless stuff on the computer.
1, Run Colorful Disk Clean Desktop. (click here, Add folder or disk you want to scan. The data will be displayed as a color-coded sunburst map which clearly shows the size of each file or folder. It becomes quite easy for you to catch the space hogs. Information about each files or folder will also be displayed in the side bar on the right.
Drag the useless file or folder to the delete displaying area which is on the bottom of the program window beside the button “Delete”.
Left click the delete displaying area, the detail (name, size) will show up. If you don’t want to delete one file, select it on the top in the newly showing window. Then it will disappear in your file deleting area and return to its original state. Click “Delete” to delete file.
Additionally, you can also drag the piece of the colorful sunburst map to the delete displaying area to delete them. Folders are colored while files are in grey.

Hello Members!I have a Windows 8 OS backup on a Pen-drive & mine is a branded PC from HP~ AIO make.Is it possible to format the entire Hard-drive to reclaim the Space used by Recovery Image desk (D:)? Can someone please help guide me on how to format an entire Hard-drive (both C: & D:) in context to an HP Desktop environment?Help will be sincerely appreciated.Thank you.

Answer:Is it possible to recover the Hard-disk space utilised by Recovery Disk(D:)?

Yes. But not-recommended.The recovery partition  is the only way you have to repair your system in the event of a failure. The computer makers now want you to use that recover if ever a major failure makes your computer unusable. If you need more storage for your photos and videos, consider these methods:A. Use DVD discs to store photos and videos.B. Use a cloud service to save your most important information. C. Purchase in economic external hard drive for extra storage. It would be a b ad idea to format our hard drive unless there was something urgent.

then repeat with the other disk? I can't see any option to remove a disk in control panel though

Thanks!

I'm not sure how I ended up like this, but using Computer Manager > Disk Manager, I ended up with my disk 0 as follows:

System Reserved
85MB NFTS
Healthy (System, Active, Primary partition)

16MB
Unallocated

System (C)
139.64 GB NTFS
Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

In addition, I have four other hard disks, and they are correctly formatted and partitioned (one partition each -- which is what I want with disk 0).

Objective: reclaim the unallocated 16MB and add it to the healthy section; likewise, reclame the "System Reserved" and also add it to the healthy section.

I'm rebuilding the system and don't have much software, so I could reload Windows 7 (Professional), but I'd rather avoid reloading those 100 fixes!

What should I do?

Answer:Using Disk Manager, need to unshrink and reclaim Disk 0 space

Just extend System Reserved into the 16mb space which was shrunk from it: Partition or Volume - Extend.

The rest looks correct although it would be best to see a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt map with listings.

Make sure none other than SysReserved are marked Active.

Hi,

I have received my laptop with a 250GB HDD partitioned into two primary partitions (well there is actually four with only 512MB called NVCACHE and another of 1GB as EISA Configuration). One of the partitions is a system, boot, page file ... partition containing the OS (Win Vista Home Premium and contains about 35GB space) and programs. The other is a partition for all the data (~198GB). I am now starting to run low on disk space on the OS partition (<3GB) and wanted to add some more space. I tried to use Disk Management but this did not work because there is no adjacent unallocated space on the same disk next to the OS partition. There is only space at the end of the data disk partition, which I cannot move to the OS partition (at least I do not know how).

Is there a way to increase the disk space for the OS partition? Both partitions have following set out:

Layout: Simple
Type: Basic
File System: NTFS (except for the small NVCAHE which is FAT32 and the EISA does not have any File system)
Status: Healthy

regards

Pete

Hey Guys,
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what my problem is. Basically, we had an issue with the computer and so we force restarted it at one point about a month ago. After that, we started getting requests to run a check disk after every time the computer was rebooted. The check disks take 20+ hours for some reason on this computer, and we cannot afford to have it down that long since it is a work computer. We cancelled the disk check and afterwards we noticed that the hard drive was filling itself up. The computer has a 450gb hard drive and after a couple of hours it was telling us that there were only 2mb of space left (we have maybe 20gb of data on the computer total). This is the point in which I stepped in and ran a disk cleanup and deleted all of the old system restore points. It gave us about a gb of space so I left it alone (I didn't realize at this point what the problem was, just thought it was too much stuff on the comp). The next day the computer's user told me it was the same problem and I knew that she wasn't using all of the space that I had found so I checked it out again. Once again, it was giving me the low disk space error. I decided to download and install Windirstat to see what was taking up all the space. When I run Windirstat, it tells me that 430gb of the 450gb of space is "Unknown". After that, I shut it down and let it run the check disk completely over the course of a weekend. It ran for about a week after... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 No Disk Space after Disk Check Cancellation

Likely the file system was messed up by the forced restart, a rare but possible occurence.

So the unknown used space may be failed attempts to copy data over to repair the file system. This is why it's always advised to back up data before doing a Disk Check and of course data should always be backed up anyway against HD failure - which itself cannot be ruled out here.

I would test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a Disk Check done from the Win7 disk or Repair CD's System Recovery Options Command Line which doesn't depend upon the OS on a potentially scrambled file system.

Hi there, I need some help with a problem on a friends laptop please.
My friend has a Samsung RV510 laptop running windows 10. The laptop has 2 partition drives, drives C and Drive D. We keep getting the error message: You are running out of disk space on local Disk D.
here is the space on both drives: D drive LOCAL DISK USED IS 195GB, FREE SPACE IS 940KB,.......so there is hardly ANY space left.
The C drive has 168GB used, and 101GB is free!!! I need to get more space on the D drive so probably from the 101Gb free on the 101gb free from the c drive. How can I do this please?? I probably need to download some FREE easy to navigate software to do this, any suggestions please??
just something simple and easy to use.

Answer:Error: Running out of Disk space on local disk D

To adjust the C partition you need third party software

Answer:Low Disk space on Recovery Disk data backup

You should not delete or modify in any way the contents of the recovery partition. Doing so could make it impossible to do a system recovery. In any event deleting these files would reclaim very little space.

Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. Thereís over 50GB free and iíve been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i donít have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. Iíve noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

Anyone has a solution for that beside moving my data to somewhere else and formatting it?

thanks

Answer:Low disk space on recovery disk (d) drive

Do you have the D: drive selected in system restore? If your computer is saving restore points for D: this could cause it to use up disk space for no apparent reason.Look for a folder called "System Volume Information" at the root of D: I am assuming you don't use the D: drive to store any personal files or swap files...

Hi

I have a disk space problem on my system drive. The disk properties is about 10GB short compared to the scan results of WinDirStat:
I searched the forums for disk space issues, and tried the proposed solutions (disk cleaner, removed restoration points, removed files of previous SPs). After all this I had saved something like 12GB, but there was still 10GB missing. I didn't care then because I had free space again, but it slowly decreased and now it varies from 2GB to 500MB... depending on the mood I guess...

Do you have any idea where the 10GBs have gone, and why the free space keeps being gnawed like this?

Thanks!

Answer:Different used disk space in windirstat/disk properties

Lets try to be sure that the problem is not more serious than it seems
Run a full anti virus scan
Download a run a scan with malwarebytes
If those are negative, download the free ccleaner and clean your system.
Go to search by the start button, type %temp%, delete the temp folders that you are sure are not needed.

I've already checked the postes under "Where did all my hard disk space go?" and that thread does not appear to apply to my problem.  "No Backups Found" under Rescue and Recovery. I have a new Thinkpad T61 with a 160 Gig Hard drive (Hitachi HTS722016K9SA00).  Disk manager shows two partitions: EISA Configuration 6.23 GB and NTFS (Cdrive) 142.81 GB.  This only adds up to about 149 GB, so I'm looking for a missing 10 Gigs. I've made backup DVD of the system files and I checked Rescue and Recovery and no backups exist.  Using Windows Explorer, I check the properties of the C drive and its folders.  The properties of the C drive state 25.8 Gigs used.  But when I add up the total usage of all of the subfolders, it only comes to 16 Gigs, mainly in SWSHARE, SWTOOLS, WAUUPGRD, Windows.  So 9.8 Gigs is unaccounted and I have the view configured to show ALL files system or otherwise. I don't know if these problem are related, but if anyone has a suggestion to find the missing space I would appreciate it. [email protected]

Answer:150 Gigs from 160 Gig Disk - Missing Disk Space

Binary vs decimal.  All hard drives have less than their stated capacity.  Your 150Gb sounds about right for a "160Gb" drive.

A) Is my backup running as it should be?
B) How can I get rid of the annoying message?
Thanks!

I ask this because Im still having the same problem with Windows Update and Drive D. My computer keeps saying that the Windows Updates are not installed correctly and that I have to free up space on disk D. Now I have tried Disk Defragmenter but I dont know if Im doing it right. When it says defragment now, I do that to all the disks, yet I still have the same problems. What should I do?

Answer:Do I use Disk Defragmenter to free up disk space?

Defragmenting a disc does not increase free space. In fact, if you are short on space I'm surprised the defrag app will even run. Anyway, the only way to increase space is to delete files.Having said that, assuming your OS is on C: drive, I'm not sure what d: drive has to do with Windows Updates.

My NTFS non-system partition is now almost well defragmented. However this applies only to small and medium sized files.

There are still approx 40 big files (> 1 GB) which cannot be defragmented because there is no free single (!) space slot where they fit in.

So I need a way to shift all occupied clusters to get free contigous space on my hard disk.
Currently about 150 GB is be free on my partition but divided into thousand of individual chunks.

I tried now half a dozend of defragmenters.
Sad but true: NO (!) one was able to perform this easy operation.

Can someone recommend me a real defragmenter which is able to perform such a "shift" operation?

Thank you
Peter

Answer:How to shift all free space on hard disk to get contigous free space?

I'm not sure exactly what you have and exactly what you are trying to do.

I personally use Windows 7 built in defrag and have found nothing better.

Windows 7 will put things like Windows 7 wants and needs things put.
The Windows 7 defrag or 3rd party defrag programs doesn't care where you want things put or what order you want them.

As far as I know you will have no control over such things.
You are obviously using a 3rd party defrag tool because you are watching the little colored squares and noticing what looks like free spaces between things. Why things are defragged in the fashion they are I really don't know.
What I do know is Windows 7 defrag put things in the order that Windows 7 wants them and that is what counts.

I just bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 computer that is suppose to have a 60GB hard drive, running XP. However after installing my programs I have tried to defragment my hard drive and get the following message:

Volume (C has 4% free space, but only 3% is available for use by Disk Defragmenter (due to reserved system space). To run effectively, Disk Defragmenter requires at least 15% usable free space - There is not enough disk space to properly complete the operation. Delete some unneeded files on your hard disk, and then try again.

Could someone please tell me step by step how to do this?

My old computer using Win98 with a 10GB hard drive and the same sort of programs had plenty of disk space at least 8+ GB.

I don't understand how can this hard drive with 60GB have less space than a 10GB.

Also I hate XP.

Thank you anyone

Answer:low disk space on D:

If the registry edit doesn't work you can remove the drive letter from the D drive which Windows shouldn't be able to see anyway. I've seen so many recovery partitions get infected with malware because Windows can see it.

Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Click Disk Magement on the left side>On the right right click the D drive>Select Change Drive Letters and Paths>Click Remove and OK.

This way windows won't see the partition and will quit bothering you with the low space. Note you may have to reassign a drive letter to use the recovery partition but in the past I haven't had an issue with it.

The tray icon runs Disk Cleanup when clicked. I've deleted all extra "Add/Remove Programs" that take up the most space (Torrent Bit, Google Earth, etc).

Sounds like he needs to clean out some disk space on the Virtual PC. Have the user check & empty the temp files, and if they are running IE from inside of it, check the temp internet file settings. IE will grab way too much disk space for temporary internet files.

They also may need to remove a few programs. Windows does not run well when it gets that low on disk space.

Question: Low Disk Space

For the past 2 weeks every time I even open my laptop to do anything I get the bubble pop up "You are running low on disk space, click here to clean up some files" so i do it and about every 10 minutes its up again.

I have not installed anything new recently so I dont understand why getting this, I also uninstalled Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop hoping that would clear up plenty of space... It has done nothing to stop the message.

Ive ran Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, Spyware Blaster and Spybot search and Destroy (which everytime I start windows it tells me theres an error with tea time?) I dont know if that has anything to do with it.. Or maybe I have some type of virus thats being overlooked by my programs.

I have put in a new version on McAfee virus scan that was given to me but that was months ago, maybe that could be the problem?

Answer:Low Disk Space

Well...how large is C: and how much free space is there on it?

Question: No disk space

I have a Dell Aspiron laptop that came with the recovery partition on drive C and the main drive as drive D. Needless to say, the C drive partition is small with no room left. It also has a couple of programs in it that I couldn't force into drive D. Now the problem is that Windows 10 wants to load into drive C but there isn't enough room. The D drive has over 350 GB of free space. Is there a way to force the Windown 10 download into the D drive or is there another fix?
Dave

Answer:No disk space

You could try re-aranging the partitions you have to give the space you need - simply reduce the size of the one partition and add the released space to the system partition I have a 256 GB SSD but around 128 to 150 GB total should be OK)

I suggest the free Partition Wizard CD (as you will be working on system partition )

I'm trying to upgrade Vista to 7 on an Acer laptop. The hard drive has a single 75Gb partition, with 50GB free. But Win 7 upgrade tells me there isn't enough drive space to carry out the upgrade.

I've defragmented, done disk cleanup etc, but to no avail. What could be happening? Help much appreciated...

Answer:not enough disk space?

Instead of doing an upgrade, I would format the drive and do a clean install...less problems in the end...

Greetings,

Forgive me for my complete illiteracy when it comes to these things. But, I have a BIG problem and need IMMEDIATE assistance as what I am trying to do has a deadline to be met.

I have a hard drive on my Acer Vista laptop with a max space of 33.5GB. Currently, though, it shows only 950MB free. How do I figure out what's taking up all the room and how do I create some space? I have no videos, a handful of music and pictures, but nothing else other than a bunch of Word and Excel files. I deleted AIM, Google Earth, etc. (including my sound device) and still don't have room. Also, tried the disk cleanup.

HELP!!! If you have a solution, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks to who ever is still awake to help me figure out the madness.

Take care,
MC

Apparently I only have 3.5gigs left on my 25gig partition for Windows7, but I can only find where like 10gigs are. These are the folders in the partition

shadowstorage is limited to less than 1gb

Any ideas?

Answer:Where is my disk space going?

go to control panel -> Folder Options -> Tab View and uncheck "Hide protected Operating System Files" as well as select "Show hidden files and folders" and then you'll see a lot more folders...
For example the folder "System Volume Information" (after taking ownership either via properties dialog or you can install a rightclick menu for that) shows some Gigs more (3.5 gigs for me) ... and there is the recycle bin ... so if you've never emptied that one a lot of space is used by it...
I don't know if you destroy anything by taking ownership of those files ... i just did it to see if it then shows the size of the folder (in the properties)... it does and hopefully everything works...

I'd say your "missing space" is somewhere in those hidden folders...

I have just recovered my laptop using the recovery discs and currently run on Windows ME.

My problem is that I can install my programme Sage Line 50, but when I go to set up the Account details I keep getting a message box that tells me " Not enough disc space" The Sage programme then closes. I have over 8GB of spare Hard drive space.
Any Ideas why I am unable to run the programme ?

Answer:not enough disk space

Hmm.

Make sure it's trying to install to C: (or your primary drive).
Make sure you've got all programs closed. What that means is you should end task on ALL programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, hit ctrl-alt-del after a fresh boot. You'll see items in the list. Click on one (but not explorer or systray) and hit End Task. Do this until all except explorer and systray are gone. THEN install. One of these programs could be causing the problem.

I know the required amount is 20GB of ram for x64, but after the install it's using 70.2 and my SSD is only 120GB.. leaving 40.8GB left.

This concerns me with updates in the future, and the fact all metro apps install on the root drive(too bad I could just have my ssd as my boot drive and one of my 4TB drives as root).

Was this a fresh install an upgrade or a over write?

Win 10 is telling me daily I'm running out of disk space on "K". A drive I use for backup. I check and their are no files

First, make sure you have turned on 'show hidden files'.

Besides the Recycle bin there should be one more folder on your K: drive, the hidden 'System Volume Information' folder. This folder is inaccessible to even an administrator because its used to store, amongst other things, restore points.

You can see if the used space is in System Volume Information by using WizTree...
https://antibody-software.com/web/so...ur-hard-drive/

Restore points can be deleted, the space allocated for them reduced, or even just turned off by configuring System Protection for your K: drive.

Turn On or Off System Protection for Drives in Windows 10

Amongst the other things that can be stored in the System Volume Information folder are Shadow Volume Copies. If by 'a drive I use for backup' you mean making system images then you may have some of those in addition to the shadow copies used for the restore points. They can be listed by opening a command prompt (admin) and running...
vssadmin list shadowstorage

To delete them, run...
vssadmin delete shadows /for=K: /all

Or, if you're really sure you have no files you want on the K: drive, just reformat it as a quick way to get your space back.

Question: Disk space?

Hi. So recently I've been having a problem. Whenever I go to open up Diablo III to play it, I have to wait a while and it usually ends up crashing. It's been fine for the past week but now it's acting unusual. I look in my Task Manager and when I'm opening it up, it takes up all of my "Memory" and "Disk" space. Actually, just started it up and it's fine again... Idk what the was going on. But I still want to know what was happening. So it was going up to like 600 MB Memory space and like 8 MB/s Disk space for some reason. So if anybody knows what's going on, I'd gladly like an explanation. It's fine now which I'm thankful for but I'd like to be filled in. Thanks!

Hey guys.

I've recently acquired a game called World in Conflict, and I've attempted to install it... It was all going good, I set my directory to my G drive (110 GB free), and when I click on "Install" it says I don't have enough space on my hard drive.
(The specific error: "There is not enough disk space to install this option(s). Please free up some disk space or modify your selections).
The game requires 8 GB of free space, and its default install directory leads, as always, to my system drive (C) which has around 1GB of free space.
Using advice given to me by compatriots, I've changed the directory of Windows's temporary documents to D drive (Which has 50 GB free), figuring it might change something and even if it won't it can't do any harm. It didn't change anything, needless to say.
Worth mentioning: I have overall 15GB in C and cleaning it to clear up around 7GB seems radical and useless when all I want to do is install a game. I don't want to mess too much with my system drive.
How do I solve this? Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: Forgot to mention I run Windows XP SP3.

I'd suggest doing an error check, and it may be worth ticking both boxes, ie; auto fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It may take some time.

Hey guys,

Im nto very good with computers, and I have this big problem that I think has a very simple solution.

Ok well, for the past month or so, ive had this little icon pop up in the bottom right corner of my screen, saying I have very low disk space. Ive gone in and deleted a whole bunch of crap but the next day its just full again. Its weird because I barely have any programs on my computer. I have a 30gb hard drive, and all I have on the computer is one game, itunes, the basic windows applications and norton anti virus. I just dont see how that takes up 29.9 gb of space. I have been suggested to do a system restore, but I was told it wont do much because something is at ''max''.

Please help, my computer is going slow and I can really do much on it anymore.

If you need any more info ill try to find it.

Thanks

I'm losing c: drive disk space on my Sony Vaio Laptop and I don't understand why or where it's going to? I continue to receive the message (Low Disk Space) You are running out of disk space on Local Disk (C:). To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files click here...

My computer disk space as of 12/27/09

Total Size Free Space

C: 14.9 GB 109 MB
D: 78.2 GB 50.9 MB
F: 111 GB 85.6 GB (this is an external disk drive)

I've had 2 GB on my c: drive for some time and then all of a sudden I've lost all of that down to 109 MB of Free Space. When I install a new program I put those on my d: drive. I've been using the free version of Advance System Care to maintain my

Windows XP OS and if I run the maintanence software and reboot the computer I get a little bit of disk space back. I've tried running the Advance System Care software immediately after rebooting and it will show especially in the "Registry Fix" that I have problems that need to be fixed. This makes me feel very suspicious of the software and that it may not be doing the fixes it says it has done. I've also been deleting many programs from my c: drive "progam files" hoping that would give me more free space (and it does for a short time) then I'm back to the same (Low Disk Space) problem.
