Closing and shutting down problems

Question: Closing and shutting down problems

Hey guys, unfortunately i have got a problem with my two2 weeks old Lenovo V 570. When i close the laptop and open it again, the display remains black. i tried to press the energybutton or other buttons - but no reaction. the only thing i can do, is pressing the on/off button for 4 seconds to switch the computer off.i also got problems, when i want to switch the laptop off. First it seem that, windows 7 goes down normally, but then the energy button remains on(white light) and after 20 seconds the aerator goes on again...this seems really strange to me, because i thought i turned the laptop out... the only possibility is here also pressing the energy button for a few seconds...:/ can anyone help me, fixing the problem?! Thanking you in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an LG touch tablet laptop C1 Express Dual, running on Windows XP 2005 v2002 sp3. I've been experiencing problems shutting down. Explorer.exe is usually the one that is not shutting down properly but sometimes other programs like connectivity tray are also involved. Sometimes, there appears to be more than one explorer.exe running. What happens is that windows pop up to say that the particular program has not shut down properly. I have to click the close button before the computer can continue shutting down. The first program to pop up is explorer.exe. And then, maybe other programs, maybe another copy of explorer.exe, or it may then shut down. It doesn't always happen but most of the time. How do I resolve this? I generally have to babysit the computer as it shuts down so that I can close the windows that pop up.

BTW, if this has been answered, do point me to the link. I checked around but found nothing relevant.

Many thanks.

Answer:Windows shutting and closing down on me.

Restart the computer and tap F8 until you see advanced options.. Then select Safe Mode With NetworkingAfter it boots, try opening your applications.....Internet Explorer, Outlook ExpressIf they open and work properly then we can likely attribute the problem to some interfering applications or viruses on your system that load when running in normal mode....and we can run some virus scans and disable some apps, as a first step in the troubleshooting process. If Safe Mode with Networking Makes makes no difference, we'll try some other stuff

Have a question in regards to shutting down pc windows 8.1. If you still have applications/software running and you shut down your pc, does that do any harm?

Answer:Shutting down windows w/ out closing programs.

Lately I have had a lot of Trojans and Worms trying to get into my computer. ESET has stopped most of them but has been a little slow in getting the updates for new infections. I can post my NOD32 infection log if you need it. Here are my problems:

1) When Shutting Down or Restarting my computer, a window pops up saying that the Fax Monitor is not shutting down. I have never used the Fax, I have no Dial-Up line attached and I even tried disabling the Fax in Admin. Still happens. When I select End this Program Now, it appears to end then the screen goes to blue and won't restart or shut down. This is all new behavior. My computer is 3 years old and I am using the same things that I started with. I have not installed any new software recently.

2) Many times the TV's that indicate communication over the LAN are now on constantly. At times they still do break showing that they are working right. Still, this mostly on is a change in the normal behavior of them. Also, some times when I am doing something such as saving a notepad file and have the LAN on, I get the hourglass and have to wait until the TV's stop for the save to complete. The mouse even doesn't work when this happens.

3) A very unusual thing happened to some of my Shortcuts on the Desktop. The go to and file names changed from starting C: to starting D:. I only have 1 HDD and it is C:. There is a Floppy drive A:, a CD drive E... Read more

The problems I had were the result of several Trojans and especially Worms that the Anti-Malware programs had a hard time updating to catch them. Some of them are below. I believe that the ones that caused the problem are here. The problem has been cleared by ESET Anti-Malware and I did not suffer a HDD or information loss. The worms were the ones that kept my LAN running and wouldn't close when I shut down. Hopes this helps and thanks for looking.

I get popups whenever I view pretty much any website, go to google.com and search for anti virus and I get popups for McAfee, sometimes when I close these popups my computer shuts down for apparently no reason.

Run NAV and Adaware, removed everything it found, but still no joy.

About 3 or 4 days ago I installed a new motherboard (Gigabyte MA785GMT-UD2H), processor (Athlon X2), RAM (4GB Crucial), HDD (so it's essentially a new PC). After installing XP Home and then gradually installing updates (SP3 is installed) and my usual assortment of programmes and utilities (nothing too out of the ordinary - iTunes, browsers, Office, spyware utilities, Security Essentials), my PC now has a number of glitchy problems whenever I boot it up at the beginning of the day. I can get past them by rebooting roughly 4-5 times; eventually it will run smoothly. I've kept notes of some of the most recurrent problems:

- Generic Win32 service closes on start-up. Result is frequently that when I try to open My Documents or My Computer, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds, then reappear. Often after a few attempts my desired folder will eventually open.

- AntiMalware Service Executable closes on start-up. Result is Security Essentials deciding it cannot update and thinks it's out of date.

- ATI Catalyst Control Centre (for the onboard GPU) closes on start-up. No noticeable effects.

- Google Chrome (my preferred browser) browser windows crash - i.e. I get the 'aw snap!' page, the whole thing doesn't close. This occurs even after disabling extensions, so they do not seem to be the cause.

...And less frequently, I have also had the following happen:

- On boot-up, a window pops up with: 'Procedure entry point Md5final could not be located in ... Read more

Apparently it won't let me edit my post anymore. Just to update, I rebooted after posting all this to see what happened, the first thing I did was open a Word (2007) document, and upon opening I received BSOD with message PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. Rebooted again and all seems normal.

I noticed in the past few weeks that my browser gets redirected a few times a day when I enter a url or click on a link. It's usually some bogus "anti-spyware" site. I was recently infected by some virus that looked on the surface to be an anti-spyware program. I think I got rid of it all, but I am still having problems with IE getting redirected. I just ran Malwarebytes anti-malware and all showed up clean. I also use AVG and that didnt show anything. Here is my HJ this log.

Are you having that problem with one specific site or with several sites?

Which browser name and browser version are you using?

Hello:
It's the strangest thing. Sometimes when closing IE 6, it starts opening multiple (sometimes hundreds) NEW IE windows. I've run virus and adware detection. I'm running XP Home through a Netgear router. Windows Firewall is turned on. It only happens sometimes, and at it's worst, it requires a hard shut down to overcome. Very disturbing. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Room this is my first post!

Must say its really great to find a good IT forum on the net.

Anyway I have just recently purchased Win XP Pro SP2 OEM with a new Hard Drive (200GB Seagate). Unfortunately I seem to be having one problem after another.

One of my problems is whenever I close a program it remains in my Task List using up some of my system memory. I have carried out several windows updates in the hope that one would contain a fix for the problem, but no luck. I am at the moment running SFC to see if that will sort the problem.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how this problem can be resolved?

Thanks in Advance

I installed Vista home premium a couple months back now, and have no problems except for 2 things.
1 - if i save a jpeg that is 1280 x 1024, the 1024 goes up to 1184 (i think), this makes the ratio incorrect and squashes the picture.
2 - if i have a few windows open, after a while, i can no longer open any more, and programs etc wont run. The only way to correct this is to log off and on again.
Does anyone know what causes either of these problems and how to fix them??
Thanks in advance!!

Answer:JPEG and closing problems.

Which application does the save problem offur in, as it is likely to be application specific?

Also, do you get any errors when trying to open more windows or does it just not do anything (roughly how many are we talking about)?

I have multiple email profiles I use for work and personal. My Dell Inspiron Laptop running Vista has problems quitting Outlook. Very often when I quit Outlook it closes but the Windows Task Manager still shows it is running (even after waiting 10 seconds). I then "end process" from the task manager and sometimes it opens the previous profile and doesn't give me the option to choose which profile I want to use.

My old desktop running XP didn't have this problem. I also had problems with the Business Contact Manager and followed directions to disable in Regsys.

Ideas to fix?

A strange problem has just started happening whilst viewing web pages. When viewing certain pages and I click a 'search' button with my mouse the whole site closes instantly. However, if I hovver over the button with my cursor and then press the 'enter' key on my keyboard the search operation is performed correctly. Anyone know why this could be happening? My AVG is up-to-date and running so not sure where to look for the cause.

Answer:Problems with web sites closing inexplicably.

Strange indeed. Is it only on search buttons? and is it happening on all sites with searches?Could you post an example?

I have a user that needs an excel document closed. When you try to open it it will tell you that it is opened but it dosn't tell you by whom so it's read only.

I'm thinking the individual who had it open has closed it since there is no name but that it's stuck in their temp files; in which case they need to reboot but we don't know who needs to reboot and we don't reboot machines on the server at night in case we need to push patches to them.

I've tried copying the files to my HD and deleting them from the server but they always reappear. I tried also to take ownership and then deleting them but that does nothing to help.

Does anyone have any other ideas that DO NOT include rebooting the server?

Answer:Problems Closing opened documents

Copy the file's contents over into a new spreadsheet. Then save that under a different name. Abandon the file that gives problems, send an email to all possible users until you find the real owner.

I have had a problem for a couple of weeks now in that when trying to load a new web page I get the following message:-

Internet Explorer has stopped worked

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
available.

Screenshot attached

I have done all the virus scans, nortons, adawares etc., that are available and although nothing abnormal was found I still got this message.

Out of sheer frustration I have formatted, and after a couple of days updating Microsoft updates and loading a few of the problems I need - avast, adobe, flashplayer etc., from the internet, and a couple I use and have the original disks for, I am still getting the same problem.

When I go to load a new webpage, this same message comes up and that automatically closes down webpages I have open. As I am a daytrader on the stockmarket I like to keep webpages open so I can see the up to date situations on various stocks, announcements, market depth, latest prices etc, not much to ask surely, plus say a couple of other pages, such as Bloomberg and BigCharts.com

I hope someone can help as I just do not know what to do.

Thanks

I have loaded 7 on my machine which was previously XP.
On switching on the machine the screen goes to a black and white page of notes were windows 7 is highlighted. It invites me to return if that is to be the platform.
it starts to open and then pauses because it wants to configure downloads, presumably from the last time it was open. After 5 mins it then tells me it is reverting the changes which takes another 2 mins.
All told it takes 7 mins to get to the password option.
Once the password is put in it takes only seconds before the machine is up and running.

When I have finished ans request to close down it then wants to download 179 updates which takes ages.

I have now turned off the automatic updates facility, but this is not the answer surely?

When I run starcraft and I start playing and everything is running fine. sometimes I can play 1-2 match's then in the middle of one I go to the desktop and starcraft wont re open. Is there an easy way to fix this?

Answer:Starcraft randomly closing problems....

It may not have shut down completely. When that happens, type process explorer in search. You will see what is using memory.

If that is not running, make note of what is. One by one shut them down, try the game. When it works you know what is causing the problem.

I'm unable to use my computer now and for the past 2 days, I've tried all I can think of to fix it, and am looking for answers of what I can do to get it going again!(short of fdisking and rebuilding everything again)

I have my computer partitioned into 4 "drives" (2 on separate partitions of my primary hard drive...and 2 drive partitions on my secondary hard drive)

I run a dualboot system with Win98 on one partition of my primary HDD and W2K on the other partition of my primary HDD.

I have GoBack3 installed on both O/Ss as you are supposed to do if you use it.

The other day I shutdown everything in my Win98 partition by unchecking the startup group in Msconfig and did some video processing(and sent the data to a partition on my secondary hard drive).

My computer has NOT worked since doing the video processing. I can't boot into W2K now. It starts to load, but hangs before loading completely. And I can only boot into Win98 in Safe Mode.

What could have happened? Did shutting down GoBack on one partition and running a program while GoBack was active on the other O/S partition have cause this problem?

Help...Please!

I can not use my computer anymore except in Safe Mode! Can anyone help me?
(I'm at work now)

Answer:Internet Explorer encountering problems and closing

It's always a good idea to have more than one browser. Firefox is solid. Are you using Internet Explorer 7? You may have already tried this but disable third party cookies in your privacy settings. This could be a spyware or trojan issue. What are you using for security?

I have had this problem for a couple months now and it's just annoying more than anything. I am connected to my internet wirelessly and then when I close my lid and open it, the wifi is disconnected and won't connect on it's own. When I try to connect it will usually take a really long time to connect if it even does the first time. Then I will cancel it from connecting and then try to connnect again where it will usually connect immediately. Is there any way to make it so my computer stays connected to the internet while the lid is closed?

Answer:W530 Internet connection problems after closing lid

You might try this:

Right-click on Computer, select Properties, select Device Manager, select "network adapters", right-click on the wireless N-6205 or whatever you have in your W530, select Properties, select "Power Management" tab, and UNCHECK the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Does this new setting now make any difference?

Hi there. After lots of great help from CatByte all the memory I had lost was returned and it looked like my problems were solved. However I've noticed that the memory I got back has been going down at the same rate as before (see link to thread below). It also takes a long time to shut down with lots of boxes prompting me to close programmes that I can't see running. The laptop also freezes at least once a day (forcing me to manually switch it off) and sometimes it hybernates while I'm working (and pressing keys). The laptop's audio is still mute (Catbyte advised me to open another thread about that but then I found that my original problems persisted so I've not done that).
Thanks a lot,
Seamus

Two problems here. I have it set that when I close my laptop or screen the computer goes to sleep. At times when I do this, the sound will stop working. I could be listening to music or watching a movie...close the lid...and when I come back only video will be playing. I checked all the settings and it just looks like a bug. The second issue, when I go from home to office and take my laptop, the wireless stops working. I will be at home...close the lid...go to work...and the wireless will tell me it can't find any networks. To solve both of these problems I just restart my computer. Of course this is an annoyance and was wondering if there was a fix. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I'm having the issue noted above. BSODs attribute the crash to either one of two files: cdd.dll (most commonly) and win32k.sys (only once). Screen turns jagged, goes black and then BSOD but only occasionally. I've had this crashes happen to me only 4 times in a whole week already. World of Warcraft crashes were all succesive, but after updating Catalyst drivers it never happened again. PC was crash-free for 3 or 4 days (thought it may have solved the issue and I could stop worrying about faulty hardware components) but yesterday night closing Chrome it happened again. I turned off Aero desktop after that, just in case.

The problem is I can't find any Memory dump or minidump for those BSODs even though settings are on for that (maybe MEMORY.DMP is too large? I have 15 free Gb out of 320 on my boot drive. I changed it to minidumps just in case. Oh, also, it was already set to overwrite so no idea what's going on). Could not find them manually nor could SF Diagnostics tools which I just ran.

My rig is new, only about 3 months old and no hardware changes since. The only components coming from my older PC are the boot HDD and graphics card. The only thing that's happened is 3 or 4 power outages in December but BSODs started only last week. If any hardware components are malfunctioning they are luckily under warranty but I need to determine if that's the case.

Only other strange thing is that, when gathering my rig's data for this post, Everest shows my Motherboa... Read more

Answer:BSOD when resizing/closing World of Warcraft, also when closing Chrome

Hi Haxiel.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

I seem to be having another problem. I can not download many things for some reason. I tried to get combofix back to see if that would work, but for some reason I can not open the page to reinstall it. Also while having mozilla and Warcraft 3 open for a small period of time it closes automatically. Whenever Warcraft closes a window pops up and says a fatal error has occured. This only occurs after I have entered a game online. Whenever mozilla closes a window pops up saying that it crashed. Also when trying to search google I get sent to other sites.

About 3 months ago i started noticing that when ever i open certain sections of control panel and some start menu items that they try to start up and then close immediately with no error report at all. They just seem to go away. It seems to be the programs that usually end up opening into a modified explorer window:
(i.e. Control Panel: "Backup and restore, Default Programs, Ease of Access Center, Fonts, Network and Sharing Center, Parental Controls, Performance Information and Tools, Personalization, Power Options, System, User Accounts, Windows Slideshow, and windows update)
(i.e. Start Menu: "Games, and Default Programs).

So i did some much needed computer maintenance hoping that that would fix the problem.

Ran AVG virus scan slow search full system. Found a few problems and corrected them. The problem persists.

Ran a hijack this and compared online and fixed a few minor issues. The problem persists.

Started a Process Explorer (from sysinternals) and found that when i try to launch these specific programs dwm.exe is the last thing to be working before it crashes.

I told it to put the process into debug mode but im not to familiar with the program to get some definitive results.

Also tried opening the before mentioned items in safe mode and it still does the same thing.

If anyone can help i would be very great full.

I will try to describe my problem as best as I can, few times during the day, I lose access to the internet on my machine - I cant open any web page, but if I have a video running on when this problem occrus, for example live stream, it keeps going without problems. Sometime the internet access restores alone, sometime I need to turn off / on my lan adapter or restart PC.
windows 8.1 64bit, fully updated, using mcafee antivirus
I get an error in the event log, Source: AFD - Event ID 16002
error says ( i will try to translate it literally what it says ): Closing UDP socket with local port number 58344 ( these numbers vary ) in proces 1076 ( this number is always the same ) took longer than expected. Hello everyone.

I have been having problems with my computer recently and cannot understand why. I hope you can help.

1) I have been having multiple BSOD's
2) A problem with programs opening and closing by themselves.
3) Lastly I am also having a problem where sometimes I am typing and and spaces start appearing between letters without me pressing spacebar and also as I am typing on the internet it enters without me pressing enter.

Can anyone help?

Answer:BSOD, Programs opening and closing, keyboard problems

Can anyone help?
Only you can help yourself. If you do not have BIOS problems, helps only Windows clean  installation. Everything else is just a waste of time, and the result is still the same.

Answer:Slow browser, IE closing, Outlook and Yahoo closing

Hi Elise,
thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

Hi I have a Dell Latitude D610,
It started to freeze up some times and run very slowly. Then it started to not recognise the intel wifi adaptor, but would find on a hardware search and reinstall (sometimes ) needing new drivers??
I got to a point where due to continued freezing up and only being able to close down the laptop by pressing the power button, i decided to re install windows.
I bought the Dell refurbed and didnt get a windows CD or dell drivers and utill CD.
having got a windows SP3 dell CD (not sure sp3 was what i had before??) I did a full format of drive and install of windows. that seemed fine.
I then (via pc) went on dell website and downloaded drivers for latitude d610.
put on a cd and via reboot from cd installed them as suggested on dell site.
I started getting the same wifi issues again and after 5 days of trying still have and the freezings back now!!!
ive run a memory check scan and uniblue to repair drivers, registry issues etc.
I am now a little lost at what to do next as all i want is my old lappy back.
Please help if anyone can.

Answer:Dell Latitude D610 freezing and problems closing down/ wifi

Hello, and welcome to TSG forums.
If you go into device manager, is there a yellow or red mark beside the network drivers?
You might try right clicking on the Network adapter>click on properties>remove. Immediately reboot the computer and let Windows find and reinstall the drivers for it.
Post back and let us know how it goes.

Hi,
please advise re this problem.

I submitted a post regarding a different problem over a week ago, this problem appears to have resolved itself, but I have received no reply to my post of 18/10 and I am not sure what to do as I have all these other issues.

Should I just wait till I get a reply or is a week too long?

The other issues are that my laptop is sometimes reluctant to get beyond the desktop stage on start up, so I have to reboot which usually does the trick.
Sometimes it will not shut down after saying 'computer is closing down' and I have to just press the open/close button to close it.
Google searches keep getting redirected, mozilla firefox doesnt seem to function correctly, and neither does Internet explorer, which also fails to open my emails due to 'java script error.

i have allowed someone in my house to use this laptop for the past year or so, and now they have gone I suspect that some of the sites they visited were of a dubious nature, which may account for some of these problems???

I need this laptop to earn a living so any help or advice would be very welcome.

thank you,

paul

Hello,Please await a reply to your earlier topic. You can update them concerning your computer issues at that time. I know how frustrating it is when your computer isn't working properly. Let me assure you that your topic isn't lost, forgotten, or ignored. We work with hundreds of logs every day, so we have devised a means of seeing only those topics that don't have responses yet. At the moment, we have nearly 500 unanswered topics, the oldest dated Oct. 14, 2010 at 8:23 pm Eastern Daylight Savings time in the U.S.A. Your log topic is dated October 18, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. using the same time zone. Our volunteer MRT team members have various levels of expertise and training, so while we try to take the oldest DDS/HJT logs, it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us would want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notificatio... I play WoW alot and it seems as soon as i try and play wow , "not only wow but when doing other stuff aswell" my computer just shutts off , it doesnt automaticly logg out or restart , everything just shuts down and restarts , no error msg`s no nothing. Ive tried to find what`s wrong myself but tbh , im no genius when it comes to software. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

i`ll post info about the pc and hope it helps:

Just lately, when trying to shut down the computer after surfing I have experienced the following, maybe on 50% of occasions.
Screen flashes for a moment then blue screen displays the following message: WINDOWS
"An exception OE has occurred at 0028:CD A64667 in V x D.This was called from 0028:CD9C6C30 in V x D.
It may be possible to continue normally.Press any key to continue"
Pressing a key has always brought back the final page of AOL to close,I then manage to shut down normally.Just a bit worried that one day something major will go wrong so any ideas will be much appreciated.Thank you.

Recently, my laptop hasn't been shutting down properly. Whenever I go to turn it off it doesn't respond, so you have to keep going to start-turn off-turn off over and over again. Either that happens or when I try to turn it off I get the 'End Now' program box coming up with something about ending ccAp, the odd thing is that yesterday it shut down without a problem, which is the first time in a few days that it's done that, and today it's gone funny again! Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong at all? Thank you!

Ok, here goes...About 2 months ago i bought a brand new dell with xp pro installed. Last weekend it started acting dodgy, most of the time when i turned it on it would go to the welcome screen and just freeze, ctrl alt del wouldnt do anything so i had to turn it off manually. I kept restarting it and after 7 attempts i finally logged in successfully. I then did a system restore to the previous weekend and i thought this sorted the problem out. It did to a degree, it doesnt freeze at the welcome screen anymore. However, i have 2 user accounts on my pc and when i try to log off either of them, nothing happens. I try to shut down and a message pops up saying 'users are still logged in, would u like to log them off?' I click yes and nothing happens, as if the computer just disregards what i just told it do. Its not a major problem, just an annoyance. Whats worse is a cant find my windows xp disc to re install again. Any ideas?Cheers guys

Hello, I've been having problems shutting down my laptop for a few months. Sometimes when I try to shut down my computer, it will log off my desktop and indefinitely produce a Windows 7 background with the words "Logging Off" without completing the shut down, regardless of how long I wait.

Usually when my laptop shuts down successfully, it'll produce this screen with the words "Logging Off", which will then change to "Shutting Down", and then complete a successful shut down.

I'm running a Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit on an Acer Aspire 1420P. I use Comodo Personal Firewall and Avira AntiVir Personal - both the free editions.

Thanks for the help!

I have several problems which I'm not sure are linked.

Firstly when I try to shut down the PC - I get error message 'ebaytbdaemon.ex' which I then have to click on before the PC powers down.

Secondly I am unable to click directly on a link within an e-mail (OE) - doing so just produces the egg timer icon - when this happens if I attempt to close OE, again the screen 'hangs' with an error message. I was advised to delete cookies as a way around this but to no avail.

I realise that pasting the link into the main browser window is an option (probably safer!) although sometimes this is not always possible - but I am curious as to why the problem has developed in the first place.

Finally I have noticed several messages stating that my PC is low on virtual memory. This coincides with any application - even opening a word document - running painfully slow. On one occasion tonight I was advised that my system did not have enough memory to open Word Help!

I have run AVG/Ad-aware but no help. Also I notice that the problem with virtual memory appears to come and go ie everything runs fine - then slows - then is fine again.

I would say that I have run a defrag analysis which suggests this is necessary so presumably this is not helping matters. I aim to do this as soon as I finish posting this!

Any advice to any of the above ramblings would - as ever - be much appreciated.

I am not sure if these are in any way related, but they are in the way that they are extremely frustrating!!!

Problem A) When my ethernet cable jiggles loose, and then i stick it back it, sometimes (but not always) my computer with BSOD and restart.

B) If I leave my computer on, overnight or w/e, and do not close the lid or anything (or even if I do) my computer will end up shutting down. Not restarting itself, but completely shutting down. I don't havve my settings set to do this... so its weird.

C) When I am playing Black and White 2, which my computer is 100% compatible with, I do not get very far before the computer just restarts itself. No BSOD, just restarts itself.

Also, sometimes my wireless card is very weird and will not pick up or will drop a connection that it previously had in the exact location. Usually restarting this fixes it, but its still annoying.

Oh and my computer is a Gateway C-140x running Vista Home Premium, 2.0GHZ Santa Rosa, 2 Gigs of Ram, etc.

hi, after i updated my A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo's bios to version 1205, i started having shut down errors. when ever i tell windows to shut down, it does so, but right when the power is supposed to cut off, it doesnt, and my computer restarts... is there a setting in the bios that i should change to fix this? or is this a windows problem?

Answer:problems shutting down

I use the same BIOS and mine works fine. It might possibly be in Power options in the BIOS but I wouldn't count on it. You could give it a shot though.

My laptop will not shut down or restart. It seems to just go into sleep mode and then drains my battery. What can I do?

Answer:Problems with shutting down

You must try to find out why this happen.
I presume some background running process ?blocks? shutdown somehow.

Before you try to switch it off open task manager, check the list of running processes and try to end some of them manually. Maybe you will find out which of them can be responsible for this issue.
Especially check processes that belong to some application you have maybe installed at least.

Hi,

Recently, IE keeps shutting off, and AVG showed some issues with Resident Shield not working. Had to re-install AVG, but problems with IE still persist, and I have some slowness. I've run a rootkit scan, found a hidden file called brognet.exe and some hidden .dll files (6). Looking for advice on what the issue is.

Here is my main log:

Whenever i want to shutdown my windows xp, i go to start and shutdown and then the screen just remains the same with my desktop in the back, icon, wallpaper and all the good stuff - and if i try to open something, a little dialog box appears saying that windows in shutting down

then after about 5 minutes windows actually starts shutting down and switches screen to the saving settings and the powering off or whatever comes next and then it finally shuts off

Does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it??

Answer:Problems shutting down

Have you tried going to "msconfig" under the "start-up" tab and removing any programs from running in the background? Your problem may be a program hanging.

Well i am currently using a laptop. It is a Acer aspire 5585WXMI.

Recently i am encountering problems in shutting it down. The screen will show that it is shutting down, but the computer would just not power off. I have to manually press the on/off button to shut it down. I have even waited for one hour for the power to be off, but it just cant power off by itself.

Anyone can help? Thanks.

Answer:Shutting Down Problems

These problems are usually caused by a program not terminating properly - which prevents Vista from closing gracefully. I'd suggest checking your Event Viewer for errors around the time that you try to shut it down. Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then click on the Windows logs and look for errors in the System and Application log files.

Another way to troubleshoot this would be to close all open applications before trying to shut down. If it shuts down, then it was one of the open applications that was causing it. If it doesn't shut down, then try closing all the stuff in the System Tray (by the clock) and then try to shut down. If that doesn't work, then go to the Processes Tab in Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and start ending the processes there. After a bunch of attempts you should be able to locate the offending item.

Hi!
I have this problem since I last installed Windows.
When I shut down the computer it takes it up to 5 minutes to turn off. This happens when I use the special key on the keyboard, because if I try to shut it down from start menu>>turn off the same amount of time is required for the prompt with Shut Down...Restart and Stand By to appear.
This is not to annoying, but it becomes so when I have to reboot after an installation or something.
I managed to take a video recording of the screen and this is what it came out:
at first all goes well...it prompts: "Windows is shutting down..."
and it stays like so for a while and then...very quickly: "Machine group policies finished."
and : "Stopping Windows File Protection..."
finally "Windows is shutting down..." appears again and it shuts down.
What should I do?

About 2 weeks ago it was apparent that laptop #1 was infected with antispyware XP 2009. My husband tried to solve it himself without waiting for me, I'm the problem solver in the house. Anyway, he purchased Shield Dekuxe which didn't seem to work. He downloaded the trial version of StopZilla which found bad things and quarentined them. Things were working fine.

Today things are not working again. I can open IE and it will bring up the home page (google.com) but anything typed in the search box or clicked on from the drop down list of frequently visited sites just closes IE. I also cannot search. The window will open, but clicking on anything (files/folders, documents, etc) immediately closes the window. I also cannot find Windows Explorer.

Shield Deluxe is currently installed, StopZilla is uninstalled. We have Zone Alarm installed, possibly. I was doing online chat with Shield Deluxe to get it to work (the internet aspect) and they said to uninstall ZA as it would interfere with SD. I removed ZA using add/remove programs from the control panel, yet when I restarted the computer ZA started up. It is no longer listed in the add/remove programs list. However viewing All Programs from the start menu shows a folder for Zone Labs. Since I can't find Windows Explorer and I can't search I can't find the folder to delete its contents.

Laptop #1 is a Compaq Presario running Windows XP and currently cannot use the internet due to the above problem.

Obvious to anyone. You have three malware apps running live at the same time. You have Avast, Kaspersky, and AVG.

You need to remove them all and install Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST.

If you continue to crash even after removing them upload the DMP file as you have old drivers that need updating.

Well, I recently put together my first computer. Having a few problems. First problem i think i should fix is my computer isnt shutting down properly.

If I restart from the start menu, it exit windows xp and goes to a black screen. The monitor will power down, but they computer itself does not turn off and then power back up. Instead it just idles, until I am forced to hold the power button until it shuts off. Once I start it up it says it encountered a boot error(something to that effect). Then i start up like normal.

If I turn my computer off from the start menu it does turn off, completely. When i power it back up its a black screen(like there is no connectivity to the monitor). It stays like this until i hold the power button until it shuts off. When i start it up again, it will go to the "encountered a boot error" screen again. I then start up like normal.

Im assuming its a mobo issue, the user guide is no help with this problem. The user guide says

"If you are using Windows XP: **I am**

1.Click the start button then select turn off computer.
2. Click the turn off button to shut down the computer.
3. The power supply should turn off after windows shuts down."

Pretty useless, no trouble shooting guide either.
Here is my set up.

Over the last week or so when my computer boots up sometimes it boots to the desktop and nothing is there except for the backround?(No Desktop Icons,Taskbar) It takes up to 5 min sometimes for the desktop to load completely. Other times when I boot up,everything boots up normally"Icons,Taskbar items etc" but when I try to open up anything
(Outlook Express,Norton etc.) nothing happens. The hour glass of my mouse stays on for 5 to 10 sec then it dissapears. About 3 to 5 min later the programs that I tried to open all open at once???
When shutting down my computer I get 2 error messages, both saying
"Initialization Failed"

1. WAVIPERF.EXE - DLL "The application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down"
2. DINRDLLG.EXE - DLL "The application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down"

The 2 error messages will continue to appear 3 to 4 times in a row before the computer finally shuts down.I have not installed anything on my computer since these problems started happing. Any ideas on how to fix any of the above 2 problems would be very appreciated. I have win xp pro sp2. thanks again..

pat..

Answer:Starting & Shutting down Problems?

As you probably already know, a Google search turn up no results for DINRDLLG.EXE or WAVIPERF.EXE
This is most likely caused by a virus or spyware.

I recently had problems with my computer of suddenly shutting down.
I wanted to upgrade so I got a new motherboard, proccessor, and power supply.
I thought that would fix the problem until I was trying to install the new BIOS and it started shutting off again.
Can anyone give suggestions please?

Answer:BIOS and shutting down problems.

You shouldn`t need to 'install' a new BIOS for a fresh build. What exact equipment do you have and what exactly happens and when?

Hi guys, I have a 4 year old computer with the following specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-81848PM
Intel Chip: FW8280IEB L4210329 SL 73Z
Graphics Card: Nvidia FX5500
RAM: 512mb
CPU: Pentium 4 - 3.2ghz

This is all the info I have on spec! Hope it's enough.

Problems started around 2 years ago when I started getting messages regarding Display Driver problems from windows. The computer would randomly shut down or monitor would turn off and would have problems getting anything back up. Eventually I couldn't get my monitor working at all so changed the monitor. I had updated the Display Drivers but this seemed to cause more problems with the original monitor.

This didn't occur too often so we have lived with it since. Now the monitor often says "no Signal Input" when we turn the computer on, and sometimes we have to turn the computer on and off loads of times until windows loads on the monitor.

When attempting to run a game, it will usually shut down straight away, or 5mins into game. My partner is attempting to install Football Manager 2009 and it now shuts down as soon as he attempts to install it.

I used to play World of Warcraft on the computer and it ran fine (around a year ago) I have attempted to play this again on there around 2/3 months ago and it lags far too much to play.

I have also tried running the Sims 2 which makes comp shut down after 5/10mins. These games have all been run on the computer previously (In the last 2 years) and have run ... Read more
