** Lenovo Active Protection System V1.0.0.21 Causing Windows 7 64-bit to randomly lock up **

Question: ** Lenovo Active Protection System V1.0.0.21 Causing Windows 7 64-bit to randomly lock up **

Hi everyone, We supplied 4 x Lenovo ThinkCentre M93P Tiny Desktops (Model: 10AB003SAU) to a business customer earlier in the year. They are all running Windows 7 64-bit with 500GB 7000RPM SATA drives. Late last week to early this week (approx 17 April 2015 to 20 April 2015) an update came through Lenovo System Update for Lenovo Active System Protection V1.0.0.21 which the customer installed on all four of their systems. Since then, all four systems have been hanging & locking up during use & then require a hard reset for the systems to be usable again until the problem reoccurs next time then the same thing over & over. I spent a heap of time going over the systems trying to work out the cause of this issue which has cost me an absolute fortune in lost productivity & lost revenue. It also lost the customer a lot of time & renenue due to the systems being problematic over a number of days. Thanks very much Lenovo! Won't get any of that time or lost labour back! Customer is furious with both us & Lenovo over this matter, we will likely lose future business due to this. Hoping this may save someone else a major headache if they see this post early enough as I assume problem would be relatively widespread if people are using Lenovo Update. If anyone else has or had this issue recently then please comment. Very disappointed with this problem due to an update which appears to be not fully tested! I wonder how likely it will be that we will continue to supply Lenovo systems to other customers after this in the future......

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ** Lenovo Active Protection System V1.0.0.21 Causing Windows 7 64-bit to randomly lock up **

I just had the very same problem with a 10A5 0006 (M93 without "p"). Customer reported the issue on Friday, 8th of May after apparently suffering silently through the issue for a few days already, saying that it becomes worse, and that he has to restart the machine sometimes every quarter of an hour. Thankfully customer was able to say that the problems started in the last week of April already, and indeed, on the 16th the machine last installed Windows Updates, and on the 19th the aforementioned Active Protection Of Doom 1.0.0.21. I already began back tracing (read: uninstalling one by one) the updates from that day when I stumbled over your post. In all fairness, I would probably not have even touched the Lenovo update, thinking first of a MS foobar. This post saved me from having to invest several hours of time, not to mention that I will be now prepared if the next machine with the similar issue comes around the corner (I need to service roundabout 50 M93p's from the last half year, I betcha there will be more) Thanks

I was trying to find the Active Protection System software for Win8 for while now, it's just not coming up anywhere. I really need to disable the disc freezing feature on my V570 cause it's super annoying (especially when watching videos).Does anybody know of a place whether the software is available? I've tried the Win7 version, but there are some compatibility issues, so it doesn't work....Also, if the software is not available yet for Win8, are there other ways of turning this thing off (BIOS, registry)??? Thanks!

hi, I'm using t420. I've replaced the HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD. I have some questions. The HDD will stop when a shock detected by TheThinkvantageActiveProtectionSystem. But now i'm using a SSD, I don't know that the Disk can be caused by stopping when a shock detected. Should I worry about it?

Answer:The Thinkvantage Active Protection System-Lenovo airbag protection

An SSD has no moving parts so there's no need to run APS. If you don't have any HDDs inside your T420, e.g. in the Ultrabay or mSATA, you can just uninstall APS altogether.

I have been annoyed by this for too long.  I have nearly 150 Lenovo T530 and T540p systems in my office and randomly I will get reports, and many have happened to me, that when the Tab key is pressed to change, for example, from the username to the password field, the result is ALT + TAB, which causes me/customer to have to click, minimize other window, then click in password field to continue desired effort.  Other example which happens all the time is me/customer clicks arrow on keyboard, in this example we will use the right arrow to move around in text area on screen but result will be ALT + Right Arrow, causing the active display to rotate to the right. OS: Win7 Pro SP1 64bit on Intel i5 Default/standard setup is T530 (Type 2392-APU) or 540p (Type 20BE-004EUS) in docking station with 1 monitor, keyboard, mouse all plugged into docking station. Device Manager: Keyboard: Standard PS/2 keyboard - Microsoft - Driver 6.1.7601.17514 - can provide I/O range and IRQ if needed For efforts to resolve I have attempted:All Lenovo system updatesAll Windows updatesReconnecting keyboard to different USB portUninstalling keyboard from device managerVerifying Sticky Keys is turned off Thank you for your help in advance.John

Hello :-) I have a question (and I should mention that I haven't got much experience with computer stuff ;-) ):I really need the Active Protection System for my notebook (R61i, windows 7), but version 1.71 (the only available one on the support site) just works with 64-bit. Does anybody know, whether or when there is a new version for 32-bit?Thank you very much!Ellen PS: Sorry for my bad English...

Answer:Active Protection System

Hi Ellen and welcome to the forum, You can find the 32 bit version for Windows 7 here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-53150 You could also download and install Lenovo System Update:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-73695.html System Update will check for new drivers and software from Lenovo for your computer and give you a list where you can choose what you want to download and install and it will be installed for you without having to download and install each one of then manually. It should also give you the option to download and install Active Protection System. It's also a nice tool to check for new versions of the drivers and Lenovo software for your computer. -gan

Is it good to be running the APS or is it only needed if I ever drop the computer? Why are there two different beeps, one is louder and longer, the other short and quiet.......... whats the difference between them? Its weird because I only had one of the beeps for about a month and a half. And can I run APS but turn off the beep (dont recall seeing an option for this)? It beeps a LOT on the less sensitive setting even.. even being gentle picking it up...

Answer:Active protection system

The APS parks your hdd head when you accidentally drop it, while the resting hdd can usually take 240 to 400 g shock, a working hdd with the head assembly reading the platter usually can take 50 g, which is equivalent to 1 m fall. However, it depends on the angle of drop so a failure of the hdd is possible even you drop it at 20 cm. The head assembly is only around 0.1 mm from the platter, and any scratches to the platter will cause irreversible damages to the data. Regarding the beep, i am not so sure.

After getting my new Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB drive working with my X60 Thinkpad (1706-M7M) running XP Pro, I noticed that the HDD active protection system has disabled itself. Is it not compatible with my new drive?

Answer:X60 HDD Active Protection System

You have two accelerometers now! Your ThinkPad has one (Active Protection), and so does your new hard drive (Seagate G-Force). I don't have personal experience with this, but it's possible the Seagate G-Force software disabled Active Protection. You may be able to re-enable it and run both in parallel. I have no idea how they interact. Either one should be sufficient to protect the drive. Perhaps someone with experience could chime in?

Hey, I got this problem. I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64-bit on Thinkpad Edge 15 and I downloaded this great tool Active Protection System, which worked perfectly on my Windows 7 before. When I open up the program and shake my laptop it shows that shock is detected and shows that harddrive is stopped and while watching a movie the picture doesn't freeze, which means it isn't stopped. The sensitivity is set high and I disabled "Apatively ignore frequnet shocks". Is this a common problem for Win 8.1 or do I have to install something more?

I'm always weary about third-party software and things extra to windows...specially programs that start themselves during windows boot. So I'm wondering about ThinkVantage Active Protection System...do I really need it on my T440s? I've read it acts like an airbag to protect the HDD incase I drop or bump my machine. but what If its always sitting on my desk and I never drop it or bump it...then do I still need to have it installed?

As long as your machine is runing a conventional hard drive and not a n SSD, I'd keep the APS installed. If you feel that it interferes with the operation of HDD, you can change the settings and make it less sensitive.

Hello! I?m hoping that someone here can answer this question ? is APS running all the time, even if the laptop is at a Windows login box with the lid closed? I work as a tech at a K-12 school district.  In our JH/HS building, we have 18 Bretford carts with 14 Thinkpad laptops on each (a mix of R61 and R400 machines, all running APS).  Once the laptops are started each day, the teachers want to have students log off instead of shut down before placing them back in the cart and taking the cart to its next assigned classroom. The classrooms in this building have a ? lip at the doorway that cart has to traverse when going in and out.  Of course, the teachers have the students take the carts to their next location instead of doing it themselves, so the carts tend to get rough treatment especially when negotiating that doorway lip.  I'm not aware that logging off and closing the lid will park the hard drive head.  If APS isn?t running all the time the laptop is turned on, then there is potential for hard drive head damage during transport, and we would insist that the laptops be shut down for transport to their next destination. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Active Protection System question

APS is NOT running as a service.

The Startup will be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and will be executed after login.

Hi, I upgraded my IdeaPad U160 to Windows 7 64bit, and the download pages do not show any APS drivers. The driver that was stored in the software partition on the hard drive does not work with 64bit; in fact it prevents Windows from booting even in safe mode, so that I had to use a partition image to restore the system. Hello, I am using P70, and installed M2 SSDs for system partition, and replaced the SATA HDD by SSD.It seems to me that active protection system is no longer necessary for this configuration,However, the active protection system background application is keep running.I consulted Lenovo engineer, he suggested me to go into the device and printer menu, and then turn off the protection.I found that there was no such options inside the menu, and it was not provided at Lenovo settings either. It seems to me that although the resources that the app is taking is not much,if the user feels it no longer necessary, there should be a way to stop running it,in "Official, Supported" way..Is there such a way that I haven't tried? Or is it not yet to be supported? Currently I installed W10 enterprise on the system over W10 Pro, which was preinstalled. If it was the cause of the problem, I am also curious that is it legitimate to me to ask for any patch (or anything...) for this kind of problem. Thank you in advance.

Ok, I have done everything I know how to do and am completely at a loss now. My pc consist of the following parts:

CPU:6700k
GPU: EVGA 980 TI SC.
MB Asus Z170PRO
RAM 16gb DDR4
SSD/HDD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 - WD Black Edition 2TB.

Temps on the pc are amazing they idle around 20-25 and load is about 39-44 on cpu and gpu is around 29-33 Idle and load about 60-70c. I have run SFC Scans I have reinstalled I have run mem test and am clueless on what else to do...Sometimes it will go all week without locking up and others its 2-3x in a day all the parts was bought earlier this year and assembled. The system is NOT over clocked.
I will be playing a game and I will sometimes hear a short quick static sound like ssszzht and bam entire system frozen. I have to hard shut down to get it to come back. I have checked the SSD and HDD health both showing 100% and strong running. I have checked for any driver updates and I am fully up2date. Any ideas?

Could this be from a USB hub maybe? I just thought of this idk if it is possible or not, Normally I can track down just about any problem but when I pull the event viewer or reliability log up it just simply says Windows has shut down unexpectedly... This due to I have to hard shut down cause it locked up.

Answer:System lock ups randomly.

I have also run the PC diagnostics tool from Asus for my board and everything has passed.

My wife received her new Ideapad Y530 40512UU last week.  So far she likes it very well but I have been wondering if it has the Active Protection System included on it.  I have the Thinkpad T400 and like the APS feature.  The specs on the Ideapad seem to indicate that it is included on many models but I can't find anything in the config that would lead me to believe that it is active on her system.  Is there any way that I can check it without the Thinkvantage Active Protection System properties utility that is included on the Thinkpads?

Hi there,I am an X220t owner and my APS doesn't work after an modification. I used to have an HDD in SATA3 slot as boot&system drive and APS works well. Now I have an SDD at mSATA slot as main drive and HDD is set is still connected. When I shake my device, the APS software detected the position of my laptop but it doesn't stop my HDD. I guess APS only protect system disk, and if it does so is there anyway to let APS back to work? Thanks (and sorry for poor English... not an native speaker

Hi all, I have a 500 GB hdd 7200rpm which I purchased from lenovo and a hdd caddy which is the slim one (so there is a slight gap for those that are curious) on the thinkpad t510. what i am wondering is i have dual boot on it (linux on the 500gb) and i am wondering if when I am using windows, does the second hdd still get protected from shocks and other potentially damaging harm from the active protecttion system which is present for the hard drive which came preinstalled on the laptop

VirusScanner McAffee Virus Sheild Corporate

Whenever I visit a site that has a flash player component such as a banner or an add, the whole workstation locks up for 30 to 40 seconds and the virus scanner is pegged out at 99 CPU. Once a site, any site is loaded that has a flash component, opening additional ones does not cause this to happen again, it only happens on the initial loading of Flash, but is repeatable if the browser is closed. Changing the virus scanner is not an option, it is part of the group policy and I would rather not change my browser, since my other alternative is IE6.

Hey everyone,

I've been having a problem the last couple months with my computer. Everytime I install an antivirus, eventually it causes a series of system freeze ups. The antivirus doesn't freeze when I run it, nor does it seem that I have an infection on my computer or anything like that. I've run my antivirus program, malwarebytes, etc., and everything is clean. Though, when the system freezes, I notice that the antivirus icon on the tray is loading/spinning, and because I've had this problem before...I assume it's related.

It's just eventually, every antivirus I install causes my computer to freeze up, and the problem only goes away when I completely uninstall the program...which sucks because then I'm totally unprotected.

I've had this problem with "Avast!" and now with AVG, and even programs like superantispyware.
Any advice on what I can do about this? Why is my computer struggling to run these?

I plan to replace the OEM hard drive on my ThinkPad X60 with a Western Digital Scorpio Black drive. I found a board posting on Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Forum site that seems to indicate that APS will work with this drive. Here is my question: Is there any point in purchasing the drive with the free fall sensor option? (This is more expensive than the drive without the sensor.)  Will this provide any additional protection above and beyond the Active Protection System. Will the internal free fall sensor in the drive be compatible with APS?  In other words, should I buy a Scorpio Black with or without the free fall sensor? Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad X60 Replacement Hard Drive - Will free fall sensor work with Active Protection System?

Welcome to the forum! If I were buying a replacement drive, I'd get one without a sensor, but that's me.Having seen way too many laptops that have gone through a real "free fall" I'll say that a damaged hard drive in such an event is usually the least of one's problems...Good luck.

Hi, I've run into a problem recently with my 2009 x200s running Windows 7 Home edition. Over the last day I noticed that after doing between 5-10 minutes of wireless web browsing, the system freezes.  The exact moment this happens, I also notice that the wireless indicator just below the LCD goes from active to inactive.  Further, while no amount of key-pressing does anything, including ctrl-alt-del, I can, amazingly, turn on/off the thinkpad lcd nightlight!  The only way to recover from this is to press down on the power button for 5 seconds and reboot. Then, 5-10 minutes later, the random freeze repeats.  That is, with the wireless indicator light doing from green to dark. By the third time this occured, I got a hint. I checked the event logs for anything unusual.  Nothing. I'm running a current version of Avast! antivirus and ran a Malwarebytes scan, again, nothing! I'm at my wit's end.  Any ideas from Lenovo gurus? Help! Best, Dave

Answer:X200s Wireless Randomly Turning off Causing System Freeze

Ok, an update. The freezing occurred while working in the library.  That hadn't been a problem previously.  So, why today? I went home and tried it again.  Everything seemed to work fine. So, I guess my question now is this: Why would my x200s wireless connection stop working in a public access point causing a freeze in Win7 while working just fine at home?? Odd....

Hi there I'm Chris, I was redirected here by Broni who was helping with my issue, which was at the time getting random pop ups and redirections...I installed Microsoft Essentials antivirus, downloaded all the necessary programs per Broni and had it working a lot better. My problem is when I'm directed to restart my computer..it will not start up normally anymore. Takes me to the Windows Recovery screen and I have to do a system restore to gain access once again. Once I do a system restore my antivirus disappears and also pretty sure all the other stuff I was directed to do disappears as well. Also when I did my last save point it will not restore from that point. I have to go back a few days and even then it takes atleast 4 tries from my system restore to actually start up Windows. Hey guys

I have a massive drive that I'm afraid is filled with crazy Trojans and stuff.

I want to scan this puppy with as many scanners as possible.

I don't want any "active protection" or any software that will interfere with Windows Defender.

I just want a scanner that will scan a drive.

What I use now:

1) Malewarbytes
2) Emisoft (works GREAT if you haven't tried it)
3) SuperAntiSpyware

Can you guys recommend any light third party scanners to use in addition to this?

Traits I'm looking for:

1) light (no active protection)
2) free

Thanks guys

Hi
I got a new 40Gb hard drive to add to the 10Gb in an Athlon 550Mhz machine(MSI motherboard, haven't looked up exactly what, it was an Advent machine)
So I install the new drive as slave to the old one, the BIOS recognises it but when Windows loads up it doesn't. So I created a startup disk and ran fdisk, which was able to format the new drive and create a partition no problem.
So when I try to get back into windows, it displays a 'General Protection Fault' and shuts down the PC. The computer's booting from the old driv so I don't know how the new drive can stop it from booting. When I go back into Fdisk and delete the partition Windows works again but still doesn't detect the new hard drive...
So any ideas?

I've had Windows 10 running on my Optiplex 3020 for a while now with no real problems. Recently an automated update is causing the pc to lock during the reboot. I get a black screen with circling dots which stays for hours without changing. I have to turn the pc on and off a few times to get it to recover to the previous version which works fine. I have run the Dell dignostics which updated a few drivers but the problem still occurs. Windows is trying to install the update every few days. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Answer:Windows 10 update causing pc to lock

dfmarshall,It is hard to say what is causing the problem. If all your drivers are updated and the computer was running fine prior to the update then, there is something in the Microsoft Update causing problems. Unplug any devices connected to the computer and disable any anti-virus or utility programs. Once you have done that try the update. If that does not resolve the issue. Contact Microsoft about the update.

Need help. I've got xp without sp's. Went to run windows update. It started it's download, I believe installing sp2. About 3/4's of the way through it locked up. The computer was froze. I ctr-alt-del to get task manager but nothing happened. So I waited awhile longer and still nothing. So I rebooted the comp. Now everytime I go to windows update through help & support or through mc's site, even just clicking on the link windows update help at mc's site locks up the computer. I have to end task to get the comp running again. I've searched high and low over the internet for the answer, ran spybot, virus scan, and even reloaded xp. Which when i did that and it asked for registration info i filled it out and sent it and it too locked up the comp. Again please help. THanks.

XP Pro SP2

This is sorta related to a previous thread of mine..but sorta seperate.

Anyone know of a windows update that causes user accounts to lock up / not allow a password to be entered even though its the right password?

It keeps happening to me, and i know its not software b/c this is the third clean install in 2 weeks with still the same issue...even without installing software other than office 2003 it happens.

Short and sweet... three user accounts (one admin, two poweruser) I log on as admin, lock the desktop (WIN+L), come back a few min later, log on to a poweruser acct., log off the power user acct, try to log on my admin user acct and it wont accept my password even though i was just on it and its is still open and shows me as logged on. It also locks out the poweruser accts.!!

The only thing i can do hard boot it....and this only happens once and a while...very intermitent. im gonna really hurt someone or myself soon....

ERRRRRRRRRR!!!!! All "critcal" windows updates installed, and net framework and WMP10 installed. and updated....and no i have not see a pinpoint pattern of any of the updates that can cause this. I have also used the drivers that worked fine on my previous install..and also the latest...no luck....it must be M$ updates

I have just returned from a client who's Windows XP SP2 station is using IE6.0. When they tried to to use the CTRL+O option to type in a website (any site) when they hit enter the browser would be non responsive for 1 minute or more then finally go to the site. After disabling services in msconfig and reenabling 1 at a time I have determined that the Windows Acquisition Interface was causing IE to lock up. I research and found this service is for digital image acquisition I left it off and all is well - should I be concerned about other items being effected - he has no camera or scanner just uses Internet, Email and printing.

Thanks

In Windows 8.1, after turning on active windows tracking (Focus only) by registry tweak, whenever mouse cursor hovers on the start button the focus gets locked onto the start button. To bring focus back onto something else left/right-click/alt+tab is required.

Is it possible to avoid this with active windows tracking on?
I mean, can the mouse hover on start button, get the focus on the start button and moving the mouse to other window will get the focus on the windows without clicking/alt+tab?

All of the external hardware is the same, one computer was a desktop, one is a laptop.

My PC randomly "crashes". I am using a 5 monitor setup. I have a regular VGA card (which has HDMI and DVI output to 2 monitors), and also have 3 of those USB graphics cards (displaylink).

I have the most up-to-date drivers. About twice a week, the PC will just freeze. There is no BSOD. This "crash" results in my monitor just being stuck in the same state. I can not move my mouse, and can not do anything. CTRL+ALT+DEL is not responsive.

What tools can I use to diagnose the root cause?

Any suggestion appreciated.

Thanks!

With out your system specs it's hard to say. If I was to guess...I would say it would be with you PSU, with all those monitors hooked up.

Hello, I bought a Lenovo U350 with Vista preinstalled. I installed Windows 7. I noticed that system randomly crashed during hybernation or resume process: after about half an hour of trying to "hybernate" or "resume", the system forces a shutdown. I performed a clean install of Windows and tried to isolate the problematic driver (one driver every 2-4 days, performing lots of sleeps and hybernations in between). The problem occurs ONLY if the Lenovo Energy drivers are installed (IN1EGC02WW5.exe) The issue is that without "energy" drivers, I can't use ambient light sensor and bluetooth, since the Fn+F5 key interface doesn't work. The following is logged in system log:  Log Name:      SystemSource:        Microsoft-Windows-WER-SystemErrorReportingDate:          6.11.2009 21:05:17Event ID:      1001Task Category: NoneLevel:         ErrorKeywords:      ClassicUser:          N/AComputer:      Nix.xxxDescription:The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x00000003, 0x85295030, 0x8078adb0, 0x84d90f00). I have recently begun experiencing this problem after updating to Windows 8.1 (although I'm not sure that it's directly related to the update).  I see that similar questions have been asked on other forums, but I see none for 8.1.
The best way to describe the problem is this: while using a particular window (such as a browser window or word processor window), the window will randomly become inactive. Sometimes it will switch back to being active automatically, other times I have to manually click back into the window to use it again.  This is especially frustrating when trying to type or use drop-down menus.  As I type this question I am constantly clicking back into the browser window to keep it active.  The problem appears not to be specific to any particular program or internet browser, but occurs for any window that I happen to be using.
I don't know if this is relevant, but the activity of one particular background process appears to correlate with the timing of the problem. The process, "HPConnectedRemoteService", is continually appearing and disappearing from the Task Manager. It appears, increases gradually to about 20% CPU, then disappears.  Any given active window will become inactive when "HPConnectedRemoteService" reaches about 20% CPU. Again, I do not know for sure if this process is involved with the problem though. Attached are several screenshots of the processes running, in case they can aid in solving this.
Would really appreci... Read more

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/4e33c8d9-fc3d-434b-8dd0-29965d1aa0a2
Except that it seems to happen at random.  While playing a game, browsing the net or when it's just sitting idle.

Hard drive light goes solid, the blue line (% highest active time) in the resource monitor disk graph stays peaked at 100% but
relatively little or no hard disk activity.

My mouse is also usually still responsive.
Some apps will continue to work, but if I click on them they will usually become unresponsive, same goes if I attempt to click on the Windows Start button.  If I'm playing a game, it will stutter or freeze and a .5-1 second sound clip will continuously loop
until it's done (meaning the hard drive light is no longer solid and blue line is no longer peaking).
It is also the same for me that occasionally the OS will freeze completely and I will need to hold down the power button to reboot, but this is usually more rare.

I've checked the Event Viewer and there are no errors that coincide with the problem.
I've run chkdsk and no errors were returned.  Same when I ran Memtest86+ to check RAM, no errors.

Answer:Windows Randomly Freezes when Resource Monitor Disk Highest Active Time Maxed Out

Your problem is with your HD. 10 bucks says you're using a "green" drive as your MBR drive. Another 10 says it's probably a WD. It's functioning but needs to be replaced. It's fine to use the existing HD as a storage drive, but not as your master boot record
drive.

To fix this issue you're going to install a new drive, create a system image, and restore the system image to the new drive.
•Go buy a non-"green" drive. Make sure it's
at least as large as your existing MBR drive.
•Using Windows Backup, create a system image. When asked if you want to create a repair CD, select YES.
•Copy the system image backup to an external drive or a thumb drive.
•Install and connect the new HD. It
must be at least as large as the existing MBR drive causing the problems.
•Insert the Windows repair CD you just created in your CD tray.
•Power down the PC. Disconnect all internal drives except the new drive.
•Boot the PC and F-12 until you get a prompt.
•Instruct it to boot from CD.
•Once Windows is loaded, select Repair Your Computer. You'll have an option to load drivers. At this point drivers are probably not necessary.
•Select System Image Recovery.
•When completed, shut down and reconnect any other internal drives.
•Reboot. et Voila. Problem gone.

Microsoft allows an image restore to a new drive as long as no other hardware's changed. If you happen to replace your mobo at the same time, y... Read more

I have a Ideapad Y560P that shut down suddenly and when we tried to turn it back on, the Caps Lock and Num Lock (on F8 key) lights go on but the computer does not start. I saw a similar thread from 2010 but there was no resolution. I assume that the two lights on at the same time at attempted start indicate some kind of "fault" condition in the computer. I have not been able to get the bios to start so that I could run diagnostics. I pulled the battery and held down power for 30 seconds, pressed start twice, put the battery back in but still won't start. I pulled memory out, trying to get a POST "beep" error but that didn't occur. I put memory back in one dimm at a time. I pulled the Hard Drive out and put it in an external enclosure and was able to extract the information to another laptop so I'm pretty sure I didn't have a hardware Hard Drive failure. Other than the one reference in this forum I haven't seen any information about this kind of, what I assume is a, hardware failure. I assume that Lenovo has some kind of guide that tells them what the lights mean. The computer was about six months out of warrenty when it failed. I called Lenovo to attempt to extend the warranty but they won't once it is out of warranty. My recent purchase of the above All-in-One PC (running on Windows 10) included the Lenovo SK-8861 keyboard which has no lights for the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK keys. How do I get them to be displayed on the screen when pressed? When I went into Display Settings in Control Panel, I could not find the option to set them on or off.  so, based on the instructions on https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht002122, I installed the Hotkey driver from http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/ds031814.  When I now go into Advanced Settings under Display Settings and click on Screen Configurations, I can see the Enable on-screen display checkbox and the Appearance settiings but the expected Indicator Settings for NUM LOCK and CAPS LOCK aren't being displayed as expected. Can anybody advise what I need to do to enable these settings? Lenovo On-Screen-Display is listed under the Installed Programs in Control Panel. Many thanks.

I do not have an answer for how to enable them via the control plane, but I can point you to a free tool called Keyboard LEDs that I have used in the past that when installed will put an indicator in the system tray, and will sound a tone  and display on screen if so configured in its settings.. Cheers,

Question: Active Protection

Thinkpad 440p Win 10 Pro. I installed Lenovo Active Protection, which shows up in Control Panel as Airbag Protection. Seems to be working as the animation in the Control Panel applet shows motion and protection control. There is no icon in the notification area. As I remember there used to be an icon. Hovering over it would bring up the name TP Shocks, Is the absence of the icon by design?

Question: Active Protection

What active protection are people using and why?For me it's...AVG: Free, low overheads, easy updates, no conflicts, simple to use, has a scary virus alert picture.SYGATE: Free, simple to use, gives good control & information.WINPATROL: Free, simple to use, the barking dog.Needless to say I have all the other anti-everything scanners but only the 3 above are active.

Answer:Active Protection

What is WinPatrol?I make use of the following:Kaspersky Anti Virus 5.0 Personal Warez. Would switch to AVG Free. But works too well for the time being. Sygate Personal Allows for better configuration than the free variant of ZoneAlarm. Program control. Qtec Router filters out everything else.Windows Antispyware Novelty application. Hi there

After clicking on the stupid EU browser choice question my whole computer went into Lock up state -- had to kill IE via task manager.

Removed the Browser choice "thingy" -- but then IE10 would only work in Metro mode until I found the old short cut and parameters for starting IE in "Classic mode".

OK fixed

but every time I do a Windows update the stupid update re-installs the Browser choice question.

I've learned better ==>just delete the thing before running it --but it is a PAIN - especially if IE is already installed.

(I'm running TechNet W8 Enterprise RTM x-64 --probably the US version not the UK / European version (of W8) --not sure if there are different versions but I'm sure it WAS the US version as all defaults at install time were US).

If you are presented with the Browser choice and you have already installed IE you could experience what I had.

I hope anyway to re-install W8 again from scratch after official release as I'm sure a whole slew of fixes will have been prepared by then.

Cheers

jimbo

Answer:EU Browser choice causing IE to lock up after each "Windows Update"

If you were running the US version, you wouldn't have the browser choice.

I went into a web site and it asked me to download Active X. As soon as it started my laptop froze and was informed a worm infiltrated. I ran Norton 2008 and my computer froze at "Security Risk.URLRedir" each time. I contacted Norton and was instructed to run their anti-virus in Safe Mode which did not detect any worm, virus etc. Each time it freezes I have to reboot which happens almost evertime i log on. I have tried running Nortin again in the Safe Mode to no avail.Do I need to clean my registry ? I am told going there is very risky. I am using a Compaq with windoes XP. Any assistance will help. Thank You . Gerbo

So I found this as I was trying to find out how to send a false positive to McAfee Avert Labs and was intrigued so I tried it.

McAfee Active Protection

I was first puzzled by its description so I googled it and found out it was actually the Artemis Technology. Here's the article I read about from McAfee:

McAfee, Inc. Reinvents Computer Security

After reading that I was so impressed and tried it. I was not contented of how McAfee secures my PC so I needed to find a way to boost it's protection. When the installation was completed I downloaded some fresh Malware from the Malwarebytes forum and was surprisingly startled as how McAfee blocked off almost every malware I downloaded. I accept any criticism from anybody who hates McAfee but I was proven that I might stick with this one for a while. I am open to any opinions on what I have found.

Answer:McAfee Active Protection

If I can remember correctly, in newer versions of Mcafee Security centre you should already have Artemis preinstalled. And have settings where you configure it (on that install you were talking about, you can't configure it), So there shoulnd't be any need to additionally install it.
But I can't remember clearly. Maybe they have implemented Artemis only for some products.
But I don't think so, I think all McAfee now have Artemis preinstalled eventhough they don;t have configurations.

Artemis is very good addition to McAfee but it's is known for it's relatively high false positives rate.
Basically, Artemis is cloud scanner. If scanner detects something suspicious it will send it to the cloud scan and scan it there.
Detctions from Artemis will be called Artemis! and some new generated number or something like this. So actually you will know that it was detected by Artemis.

Hi, all of this is pretty new to me, so forgive my ignorance.  I gotta explain the back story, so bear with me. Mid-October, suddenly started having issues with Windows 8 updates.  Got caught in this cycle of "Trying to configure Windows, please don't turn computer off" message cycling for hours; tried all the recommended fixes and interruptions to get out of that mode, with no new result .  Couldn't turn computer on or off,  eventually went through customer service at Lenovo who had me try things like take the battery out, hit F6, etc., etc., but never got anywhere, and the customer service person told me the hard drive was shot and I had to pay to get a new one and everything I had on the system would be lost.  Since the computer is less than a year old, I just could not bring myself to accept that.  Read online about ways to interrupt that blue screen cycle and somehow was able to get the thing to knock it off, and brought up a screen to uninstall the new Windows updates.  Did that, computer started fine, has worked fine, as long ever since as I didn't try to update anything.  Went back through looking for anything out of line, ran all the antivirus software (with no results), reinstalled drivers and this morning manually updated all 69 important updates.  Laid hands on the computer and prayed, restarted the thing, and everything updated and was fine.  WHEW.  HOWEVER, I can ... About 3 days ago I was listing an item on eBay. When it came to step3, adding the starting price & picture, I received the following message. "Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."I clicked ok & carried on inputting the info. When I clicked continue, the window appeared telling me that the image was being sent to eBay, as normally happens. But this time the cannot find server page appeared, & I could not progress any further. If I sent the info without the picture the connection is made & I progress on to step 4. I contacted eBay & they told me to set my security settings to default. This I did, but it did not make any difference. They then gave me a link to a web page to try, I followed the advice, but this did not work either. Anyone got any ideas?Pete (eBayer at a lose end ).

Hi I am having trouble mounting and accessing data on my old lenovo r60 thinkpad hdd which had xp before. what happened:1) i decided to disable the fingerprint software because i had been in the garden and my fingers was scratched so it kept failing, but obviously i got in after many retries2) i chose restart computer and it booted up and i had to logon with password. all looked good and i was happy3) next day i started computer, and now it asks for a password i dont have. the password it asks for is illustraded with what looks like a Database icon and has a number 1 shown. Problem is, I do not have that password and i dont even remember setting it4) So i took the old disk out of my R60, putted in a new disk, and installed windows xp on this new disk5) Inside Windows XP, i try to mount the old disk using usb, but xp only see the disk, it sees no partitions6) I used some recovery tools, because i thought all of a sudden the disk had gone bad,.. which would be really bad luck, it has been working fine for a long time. But anyway, when i scan for partitions, software finds no partitions, and the errormessage is a lot of "read error" for cylinders. It is almost as if the disk has been encrypted somehow, but that is not something i know or have done myself. Is this some kind of security setting from Lenovo software that i can undo directly on the disk? Or can i get around the password prompt and just boot back into my old Windows XP installation? Or is the ... Read more

Answer:Disk with Lenovo fingerprint protection cannot be mounted on another Windows XP

It sure sounds like there is an ATA Password set on your hard drive. This requires that a disk password be supplied every time you cold-boot your computer. Your fingerprint scanner must have been supplying the ATA password. The warm restart you did in step 2 didn't require the ATA password (drive only needs to be unlocked once, when it's powered on), so you didn't notice a problem then. The bad news is that the drive itself won't let its data be read unless the password is supplied. There are companies and even some downloadable software that will attempt to bypass the ATA password for ~$100. That doesn't work on all hard drives. And I suspect that we're not supposed to discuss methods for bypassing passwords in these forums. No sense making life easier for thieves. The good news is that your fingerprint may still be stored in your fingerprint reader's nonvolative memory. If you could re-enable your fingerprint scanner at boot time, it could supply your forgotten ATA password. I hope someone with more experience with the fingerprint scanner, ATA passwords and (maybe?) Rescue & Recovery can help here. Good luck!

Hello I'm planning to buy a new and larger harddrive (500GB) for my x61 tablet. My Question is: Does the Active Protection System (APS) work with any Harddrive which is able to park heads? In asking because I'm not sure, if the thinkPad recognizes movements with a built in g-sensor inside the laptop (not in the harddrive) or a sensor inside of the harddrive (someone told me, that some drives have a g-sensor built in which APS is using)Can I change the harddrive and APS still works ??  Is there something to think of when changing the harddrive (except copying the system ;-)) Thanks for your helpDitschi

Answer:X61 Tablet - New Harddrive and active Protection

Check the manufacturer's hard drive specifications/data sheet for the support of IDLE IMMEDIATE ATA command which the Active Protection System uses to park the drive head without flushing the cache when the APS is engaged. More information @ http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Active_Protection_System I am personally using a WD scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM drive with free fall sensor which appears to support this feature (I can hear the drive head parking when the APS is engaged and all read/writes are halted). Hope that helps.

I'm looking for a small app that I can install to scan my system for malware.

I do not want "active protection" of any sort.

I don't want new entries appearing in my services configuration.
I don't want any new background processes.
I don't want email, boot sector, memory, etc protection.

I just want a scanner that runs when I tell it to and closes when I'm done.

They don't seem to make anti-virus software like this anymore. Every app I've come across has been loaded with garbage that clogs up your system. You can't even terminate most of these apps without uninstalling them. Not even AdAware works the way it used to.

I've tried AVG, Avast, Norton, NOD32, Kaspersky, and others whose names I've forgotten.

I use Anti-Malware now but that's it. I'm looking for a bona-fide virus scanner of the same sort, but maybe there aren't any?

Hope it helps

Hi,After reading your other topic; I think you are probably fine and this is simply a problem with your anti-virus not communicating with Windows correctly. You can try setting your Windows Security Center service to automatic and this may fix your problem.Start > type services.msc > find the service Security Center > right click > Properties > change the start-up type to AutomaticReboot. I've never posted in this forum before (that I can remember) and if this is in the wrong place, forgive me. I just thought this would be the best place to ask.

Found this link over at SlashDot:
http://www.echannelline.com/usa/story.cfm?item=23681

My take on this is that McAfee would like us to think this is some kind of breakthrough; but, the way I read it, it isn't as much a breakthrough as it is simply a shaving of the response time (and eChannelLine having a slow news day).

So I have taken to watching videos on the bus with my Z60m now, the only issue is that it seems the active shock protection program is kicking in way too much and just ruining my enjoyment.  I turned it to low sensitivity and flicked on the check box for "I ride the bus" and it seemed to help a bit, but only by about 50%. My question is thus: If I just turn it off completely, is the HD inside going to be damaged?  Is this program just extra insureance and not needed for normal things?  I would not mind a bit of insight as to someone one who may have turned it off for a road trip or something.... Thanks !

Ok Admin guru's, im gonna pick your brain and expertise. I work for a local IT firm and alot of our clients are small based businesses and a lot of single customers who simply don't the brain power, time or ability to use indepth spyware removal tools and cleaners other then SpyBot and Adaware.

Those work great, WHEN UPDATED AND USED but my company is really looking for an "invisible" solution to where it will sit byitself, keep most of the basic spyware junk out of a machine, update it self with definitions and be intelligent enough to block bad things and allow good data to flow through without throwing up a damn window every single time asking the customer what to do!

We have been using SunBelts Counterspy as a single client and as a LAN based enterprise active protection on our network for the past few months but there is no way to tell it to shut the hell up. Every single freaking packet that passes through WAN connection it asks the client what to do with it. Hell, half the time I dunno what to do with it, so whats the average consumer going to do? I can't give a seminar to every fricking client on Do's and Don'ts, use Firefox, don't go to bad websites that look like 12 year olds built it, don't use P2P programs.

What have you guys been using/recommending to clients? I could really use some feedback as trying to "teach" people how to use the internet saftely isn't working, especially when it comes to ... Read more

Answer:Net Admins: Active spyware protection. What do you use?

Haven't used Sunbelts version..but most centrally managed packages allow you to create a custom configuration to push out to the clients, making it automatically perform actions based on what you say.

What antivirus are you using? I've seen my clients malware problems take a big drop since moving to NOD32 antivirus..since it's quite strong in ad/spyware detection. Kapersky is also very strong in this area.
