Does a install of Windows 10 Affect Steam or Origin in anyway?

Question: Does a install of Windows 10 Affect Steam or Origin in anyway?

Prying Mind want to know I just installed my Origin games in Windows 8.1 Over again.

Preferred Solution: Does a install of Windows 10 Affect Steam or Origin in anyway?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Does a install of Windows 10 Affect Steam or Origin in anyway?

post makes no sense.
You need to clarify what the issue is and what you did to bring about said issue.

I don't think it's a lack of coffee that's causing me to not understand, as I've just about finished my pot.

I'm having issues steam origin or uplay on secondary hd i have never had this issue on windows 7. I did a full fresh install to windows 10 and i'm having this error were i cant delete or run steam or origin or uplay or run any games from my 2nd hd i am on the administrator account.
Please help me.

Answer:Cant install steam origin or uplay on secondary hd

Exactly what error message are you getting? We need more info other than "I can't delete" and "I can't run"
When you go to install these (Steam, Origin, and Uplay), are you choosing to install them (the game hubs themselves) to the secondary drive? Also, in each service's settings (Steam for example) there's settings to choose where to install the games.
Maybe you could try starting over. Right click on the Start button and choose "Programs and Features" at the top of the list. Then scroll down the list, right click on Steam and uninstall. If it won't uninstall it from here, then you'll have to manually remove the Steam folders. (The default location is c:\program files\steam) Then run the installer again, paying attention during the install process, and choose your secondary HDD for the install location. This applies to Steam, as well as the others (Origin, Uplay, Epic games, etc) I have them all installed as well, with many games installed on different drives and have zero issues.
If you still have problems, there's tons of help to be found on the Steampowered site. Here's an example; moving an existing Steam installation to a different drive location. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7710-tdlc-0426
I hope some of that helps. We're more than happy to help you here, but need more info to work with. Let us know how it goes!

Are they all OK or are they as bad as the other ? I think I rather play w/o them but it is not possible anymore, just too bad.

Answer:windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.

After the first initial attempts with steam i then moved on to trying Origin and UPlay and then discovered that they were also unable to connect to the internet, and not sure if its related to this but superanti spyware is unable to update its definitions, i noticed this happening around the same time as everything else.

Answer:Something blocking Steam/Origin/UPlay internet access

What are your security software install? Did you check your Windows firewall to see if its getting block by connecting? Try them to put on exclusion to see if its working.

just got my yoga pro 2 with the i5 for school and to play some older RTS games like warhammer or CofH i switched the screen res to more normal sizes and it only helped a little.  the games intro titles will display with sound then flicker to cut out and boot me back to the desktop with the app still running. I can click on the app again to somewhat continue where i left off but i can never keep the program running.  is this a directX problem or is it still a screen resolution conflict? ive restarted a few times and still hasnt worked.  has anyone had simliar issues with launching games? im not very experienced with installing pc games since this is my first pc in long time.  any other steps i should troubleshoot? thanks,

Answer:Yoga Pro 2-cant fully launch games from steam/origin

I've bought and downloaded a number of games from Steam. For a while, they worked fine, but now almost all of them start up and almost immediately quit to the desktop, although often the sound continues to play. Sometimes the cursor/pointer is limted to the upper left-hand part of the screen. I've repeatedly asked Steam for help, but they've never answered. I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 that doesn't have this problem. The only other software I loaded onto the Yoga 2 Pro was Kapersky Internet Security, but disabling that doesn't help. I suspect some sort of interaction with the Lenovo system software. Please help!

I fear that the virus on my windows xp affect the other HD that has Ubuntu can a virus move through partitions?

Also another question is:
If I execute a virus on wine can it affect the entire os?

Las question:
If I open an email that's meant to infect my pc just by viewing it can it affect any OS or does it depend on the browser?

Answer:Can a virus that affect Windows affect a linux partition on the same PC

(Admins delete my post if I'm not allowed to respond to this topic)

I don't think it can, unless it's a cross-platform malware like the Boonana trojan. Windows malware downloaded on Ubuntu can affect Windows, though (not sure it it has to be moved to the Windows partition manually or not).

I think since Wine is virtualization, it shouldn't affect Ubuntu, and because Ubuntu is a linux/unix distro, it shouldn't be able to run anyway (but don't take my word on that).

Not sure about the last question.

Hi everyone, My Thinkpad X220 should be delivered today! Correct me if I'm wrong, however I understand these usually have a  partition that stores a recovery image of the OS. I plan to do a clean install of Windows 8 Pro - with earlier versions of Windows I've ususally just deleted any partitions, create a new partition for Windows and a second for files and then let Windows install, however I don't want to inadvertantly wipe the recovery data. Is there a particular way I should go about this? Just format the C drive and install Windows there maybe? Thanks in advance for any advice. Stu.

Answer:Will performing a clean Windows 8 install affect the recovery parition?

From my experience, yes, it will break the recovery capability. E.g. booting into recovery mode with ThinkVantage button will not work anymore. The recovery partition may not be affected, depending on whether you decide to format the whole drive during Windows installation or not. I advice you to make recovery DVDs withing you current Windows 7 installation and wipe of the recovery partition, since there will be no use for it anymore. You should be able to revert the laptop back to factory state using those DVDs, including the recovery partition and re-enabling ThinkVantage button. If you alreadty installed Windows 8 and forgot to make DVDs, there is still a way if you kept the recovery partition with .wim files. Otherwsie you will need to order the recovery DVDs from Lenovo, it costs.

I had found a site that showed me how to remove the login password request from my windows 8 laptop. I don't remember what site I got this information from but now I'm concerned this will affect my windows 10 installation somehow.

Can anyone help with this please? I'm not planning a clean install as I have too many files to back up.

Answer:Removed password on windows 8, will it affect windows 10 install?

Since you can't remember how you removed the password, we can't tell you what affect it will have on the Windows 10 upgrade. What I would do if it were my computer:

Create a new LOCAL user account:
User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8

make sure to change the new local user account to administrator type. Make sure to log on to the new local user account. Then do the upgrade to Windows 10. That way you will ensure that you have an account you can log in to on Windows 10, and if your usual account stays active the way that you want it to, you can just delete the new local user account you created.

Hello Everyone,  I just got Windows 7 beta and looking to do a dual boot to try it out, if i manage my hard drive (allocate space on C) via Vista will it affect One key Recovery button or features? Thank You. Or should i just use the D portion of the hard drive for it?Message Edited by rappadappa77 on 03-19-2009 11:20 AM

Answer:Managing Hard Drive to Install Windows 7, will it affect One Key Recovery Button/Features?

You haven't mention your model but basicly on any Ideapad if you just use D drive to install another OS on, it will not affect OKR if you do not change partitions sizes.

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

i currently have steam and origin hosting most of my games as well as guild wars 2.

With GW2 and steam. i have them on a seperate hdd and can simply run the steam and gw2 app after installing win 8 and it will auto update/setup both ready to play instead of having to redownload all my steam games and gw2 game.

I do not want to redownload all my games again

I have spent all day trying to get my computer to boot up and although it does boot up now it wont run correctly. I have decided to do a clean install of XP on primary hard drive and before I start I just want to make sure that doing this wont effect my slave drive at all. I have transfered all the files I need to my slave drive and I would rather not have to go through the 10 discs of backup if my information is safe on my slave drive but if there is a chance of losing it I will.

Answer:Will a clean install of XP on my master affect my slave?

It won't affect the slave drive. If you want to be 100 % sure, disconnect the slave drive for the duration of the install (just so you won't accidentally install on it or something like that).

Just a basic user here so thought I would ask somewhere on the internet before attempting. Have windows7 installed on drive C:, and have win7 and winxp installed on two other partitions (E: & F: ) on the same hard drive.

Last year I used EasyBCD so that 7 and XP could dual boot as options.

Now the main partition drive C: has way too much crap on it, want to just reinstall windows 7 all over again but leave everything else alone. Will reinstalling windows 7 to drive C: affect the whole drive, i.e. Master Boot Record, special boot loader or anything like that -- do I risk damaging other partitions in any way or any precautions I should take / be aware of?

Answer:OK to do clean re-install windows7 drive C:? Affect other partitions?

Hello and welcome extra mate I am NO expert but if I understand you correctly you have 7 installed ?twice? and will end up with three installs of 7 plus the XP if you go ahead.

I stand to be corrected but I think you can install again on the same drive it will keep the "old" Windows there too.

Any chance of a screen shot of the Disk Management screen? and some system specifications would be real good too.

A quarter century ago, Windows wasn't everywhere. In fact, some were doubtful it would ever ship at all.

At that point Windows was no longer considered the company?s star project, as it had become a bit of an embarrassment. Even internally there were doubts among some in the company that Windows would ever ship. Also, because Ballmer had already burned though four product managers to try to get there?people who now had been either reassigned or were no longer at Microsoft?the product was developing a reputation for career death.

My NE 522 came with Windows 8 64-bit but when I was informed that I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free I jumped on it. I remember having to stair-step to 8.1 then 10 during installation. Everything seemed to be fine for a few months then the BSOD. I managed to get it going again for a short time and now the Laptop is not operational. At startup I get the Gateway logo then a blue screen saying "Default boot device missing..." I get past this using the "recovery" stick I made just after purchase but I get "Choose keyboard layout" then "Troubleshoot or Turn off" as options. I have used the Troubleshoot Path to get to the command prompt. I also can get through POST and access the InsydeH20 startup utility (BIOS) which I use to unfreeze the HDD password (not sure why it keep freezing). Refresh, Reset, Restore and Automatic Repair all fail. From command prompt I access x:\Program Files <x86>> desktop.ini and see one HDD (Boot) with 27.6 MB free of 30.0 MB. I also see the Removable Storage devices.

The top of the command window says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]" Does this mean Windows is installed?
If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

Answer:OS origin for Laptop or Windows 10

AFRet96 said:

No need for Win8, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10. Your successful upgrade from 8 to 10 has recorded a Digital Licence tied to your PC's hardware on Microsoft's activation servers. Do a clean install of 10 (making sure you install the same version as you had before, Home or Pro) and when it asks for a key skip this with the 'I don't have one' or 'register later' option. Once installed your Digital Licence will automatically activate the new install.

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal, except from when I tried a system restore.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.
Real Player has been playing video files slowly, and the picture was all pixelated. (This was the first program I used after res... Read more

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling numerous

OK, I was playing a game yesterday using Steam, and my Hard drive decides to go out, I know it is the hard drive because I have had problems with it before. Of course Steam was installed on that drive, I figured it wouldn't be a problem, figuring I can just re-install it on my working drive, but at first I got the message that referenced the old drive I just took out, as if it is trying to re-install it there. After trying numerous things, I am getting the message "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. contact your support personnel." I have no idea how to fix this, maybe one of you do?Thanks!

Answer:Bwaaa Can't re-install steam!

The best part about the Steam Client is that they have your games referenced to your acct. So you can clean build your system, reinstall Steam Client clean to this build, connect to Steam and redownload your games or install and reassocate say CS source or Portal etc and go on with your gaming. *The only drawback to the clean install of steam is that some games steam does not save the game status of, so for example if you are almost complete with Portal and your drive is corrupt, you will have to start back at level 1, but Steam will work again. Hopefully you are not looking at critical lost game states. I lost game states before and so I backup my games to a 16gb thumb drive by use of a batch file to grab the *.sav files etc, so that if i lost a drive or a system I can restore back to where I left off.

The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal since, even after resetting my computer during my attempts to fix it.

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I am running Vista, and have about 6 Gig of free space on this hard drive. When I try to install a new game from the Steam site, it tells me that I only have 6426MB of disk space available, and it requires more.

An internet search indicates that I'm not the only one with this problem, but I can't find a solution posted anywhere. Anybody have any ideas?

Answer:Steam Gamers? Can't Install Game...

Steam needs more than that amount because it needs to buffer and caches files during download and install, so if you are trying to install a 6GB game, having 6GB free is not nearly enough.

How big is your hard drive and why on earth do you have so little space om it? That can lead to problems in Windows, and is something you need to look at and fix, the sooner the better. Windows needs a certain amount of open space for its own needs.

I'll ask a mod if they think this belongs in the game forum.

Have also posted this in the gaming forum but I'm assuming it could be a Vista problem so thought it'd be a good idea to post here as well.

When I try to install Steam it all seems to be going ok but then a message comes up telling me the system administrator has set policies to prevent the installation. I am the system administrator and there are no other accounts. I read somewhere that right clicking and selecting 'run as administrator' could work but I have no option for that. Another thing is the icon next to it - it shouldn't look like that should it? I really have no idea why it's doing this and would appreciate any help. Also I'm a bit of a computer novice so if you could explain in simple terms! Thanks :)

steam requires you to connect to the internet and it binds some ports to try and configure norton to allow steam or just disable norton untill the install is finished.

Okay, first let me say I hate Steam, good Idea, bad execution. Ok now on to the meat of it.

Go to Library on your Steam go to games, and right click, Click Delete Local Content

Next, Go to command prompt (run) or windows key + R now type in C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe assuming that's where steam is installed at, at the end of that should be the install command from the disc drive.

So the whole thing should look like this:

C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe -install D:

Break down:
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe <- Where steam is installed
-install
D: <- Your disc drive
I hope this helps people out. I know I went crazy being I have a download speed of 26kbs damn dial-up

Being Deployed sucks

Have a good day, and play hard

Well, my hard drive locks up when im installing steam games... or at least trying to... Also, it locks up when i use firefox to download a large file. I have formatted and replaced the motherboard. I also ahve logged the psu voltages and temps with th ASUS probe. Nothing seems out of order. The problem started after i moved my computer to a new case. Is the processor damaged? If so, why does it work perfectly when i rum BF2? The temps are all under 60 degrees Celcius under load, and i am running a pentuim 4 prescott HT clocked at 3ghz. It is not my hard drive to my knowledge (i swapped hard drives and nothing happened. all the rest of the info is in the everest log attatched, as i cant be sure of the accuracy of metelling you.

Hi all, I'll be getting a new gaming Desktop PC in a few days time, and I've never had a computer with both a SSD and a HDD (the one I have now is nearly 11 years old! And it's all installed on a single HDD [though a lot of my files are on an External HDD to save room]).

The reason I'm asking this is, as I don't know how modern computers deal with having Windows 10 installed on the SSD, and having programs such as Steam installed on the HDD - or can it be installed on the HDD and still work just as well?

What I mean is, should I install [in particular] Steam - and all my games on Steam - on my 120GB SSD (as it's faster, though it would take up room on there), or do I install Steam + games on my 2TB HDD (where there's loads more room, and it saves space for the SSD to be used purely for Windows 10)?

I know my games will take up most of the room on there (I'm thinking of installing ALL my games and leaving them installed if it's on the HDD - which will take up who knows how many GB), so I guess most of the largest games will be installed wherever Steam is installed..

So is it even possible to install Steam outside of Windows' Program Files?

I'm not sure how it all interacts with each other. I know games like Half Life 2 has its own folder - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods, and the rest goes into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

But can that/Steam be moved out of Program Files and on to my HDD, or is it too interdependant on Windo... Read more

Answer:[new computer] Should I install Steam on smaller SSD or bigger HDD?

I always install Steam on a secondary HDD. The added benefit of this is that if you do this, your games are always there regardless if you are reinstalling Windows. This way only updates are needed for your games as long as you use the same file path for the steam install after reinstalling Windows.

You can also move steam and all games from C to another drive at any time, there are quite a few tutorials out there for that.

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

Hi guys,

I've just started a new job and with it I get a nice shiny new computer. Since my netbook has the computing power of a calculator I haven't been able to play my favorite Steam games for a couple of months. Now I have a job, I wanna start playing these games!

I installed Steam after a fresh reformat and installation of Windows XP Professional SP2. Once installed and self-updated, I get the following popup

Fatal Error: Could not load module bin/vgui2.dllClick to expand...

The first thing I did was check Steam support, where they have the following two solutions (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9672-LWMF-6128):

Multiple installations of Steam said:

1. Browse to the Steam installation folder (C:\Program Files\Steam by default) for the Steam installation you would like to move.
2. Move the steamapps folder from the Steam installation folder to your desktop.
3. Review the Uninstalling Steam topic for instructions to uninstall Steam (this must be done to remove your old Steam installation settings from the Windows Registry).
4. Review the Installing Steam topic for instructions to re-install Steam to the desired location.
5. Move the steamapps folder into the new Steam installation folder to copy all of your downloaded game content, settings, and saved games to the new location.
6. Start Steam and log in to your existing Steam account to confirm that the move was successful.

Not sure if many of you noticed, but post Windows Insider build 14936, the Steam overlay would refuse to work with 64 bit games. Starting with the public beta build of Steam that is available today, that issue is resolved.

You can opt in to Steam beta builds by going to Steam's settings>Account and clicking the "Change" button under the Beta Participation header. Select "Steam Beta Update" from the dropdown menu, hit OK and then hit the button to restart Steam.

As with any beta builds, you may experience bugs. I haven't run into any showstoppers in the time I've been running Steam betas, but your mileage may vary.

I recently installed kaspersky to help a friend scan his drive. nothing has happened since i did it a week ago, but recently i looked into the list of vulnerabilites. i tried to fix the msoffice vulnerability by installing SP2 for office, however it said Kaspersky was blocking it and to turn it off, so i did thinking it was temporary, then it said it had to restart, on restart, kaspersky didnt load, so i tried manually loading it, and nothing happened. when i tried to restart it again it said steam was not responding (which is normal for me during shutdown) but i never noticed steam loaded. so on restart, neither program loaded, except for magic jack which loads after startup. then i tried installing malwarebytes, and it downloads, but closes out during install. So i installed Superantispyware and malwarebytes on a flash drive through another computer, i ran SAS, with no results on quick or full scan, and malwarebytes wouldn't load.

I have gone here and done everything listed and looked through the steam forums:

Now I have installed Win7 64 many times, I am new however to installing in raid 0.
I have installed the same copy (Windows 7) with the same components currently in my computer and have not had a problem when installing on a single SATA drive. So I am very dumbfounded at the moment as I have done now 3 fresh installs installing steam FIRST to see if something else was writing to the registry or something. Still no go :/ its 3 am and I am beyond frustrated. Drivers install fine, can download other programs and they install fine. Have yet to install another "game" because most of them are on steam =(..

Can this also be a way for telling me that maybe my raid controller is somehow conflicting with steam in some way I am not aware of???? The only thing that has changed is I upgraded my cooling to H70 and bought 2 new HDs Seagate 1TB 7200.12 32meg cach.

Answer:Steam Error Since New Install Win7 64bit in Raid 0

Have you tried re-installing steam (not using your previous install that you copy-over to the new drive)? And what about drivers, your drivers up to date on everything (chipset, audio, video, network)? Another possibility to try is updating the bios. If you search for "steam c0000005" you might find a few possible fixes for others who have that error that you could try. I saw a few, not sure how useful they are.

Hi !! First time here (as many I think, so Hello again !!)
First of all, I'm French (well, excuse me for my (sadly) bad english ).
I've seen many BSOD marked as answered, so I'm trying here 'cause I've exhausted all my skills .

Bug Description:
Before wiping win 7:
BSOD and freeze time to time on WebBrowsing, log on screen, Steam Description. Always BSOD hal.dll (hal+0x12A3B)

After wiping Win 7 : - BSOD on The Witcher 3 (only game reinstalled ^^) (almost everytime same same moment, same moment). And everytime on Steam in any game description. Clicking on game, video charging 2 sec and freeze or BSOD.

Background: I have performed a new Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 installation 3 days ago, and still nothing.
What I have tried :
- MemTest with solo memory, and with both memory
- OCCT for GPU/CPU/Power Supply
- Hd Tune for SSD/HDD
- Almost all drivers up to date (not all but GPU, SDD Firmware, BIOS, and some others)
- Up to date Win 7
- Tried uplug all component except SSD (OS), and the BSOD was still there but many minutes later as usual
- Change RAM slot and playing with 1 ram only
- no Overcloking performed
- 100% fan speed and heat never go higher than 65? Celsius for GPU and 60 for CPU on stress mode
- Safe Mode and no freeze on Steam (althrough I can test The Witcher 3 on Safe mode ^^)

Config on my description for major components !

hey there,
for a good while now i've been occasionally seeing a spike in my CPU usage, when i opened the performance monitor, it showed that "Xboxstat" is the process that's causes the extra load, after googling, it's a legit process but it's only used to run the Xbox controller for windows and should not under any circumstances hog 25% of my cpu load! (i have i5 3570k quad core process Running @4.4 GHz!)
lately this spike started happening again, but this time the process shows up as "Steam" in the performance monitor, and sure, i do have it installed, but it's not running at the time, and i didn't even set it to run when windows start!
the problem now is p[retty much identical to this thread:
a while back now, my PC was infected with a VBS script that turns every thing into shortcuts on any removable driver, the original script was on my C partition and it was not detected by any antivirus at all! i had to track it down and remove it manually, but i found a program called USBfix that's supposed to remove this particular script,
http://www.en.usbfix.net/
well, it worked, i guess..but i have already removed the original script manually like i said, and this program looks a bit dodgy too, so i thought i would state this as past history of infection, maybe it's related..
went ahead and did a FRST scan, i killed the process manually now, if you want a scan while it's still running i can a... Read more

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6...994-1243064377

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

I am not sure if it's related or not, but I installed the IE9 RC on my laptop a few days ago, and I now notice that the message area info bar with the TO, FROM, Attachment Paperclip, and 'Click here to see images" is now messed up. Instead of the proper fonts, the area now used the vgasys.fon, and the paperclip does not show if an email has an attachment, and the bar that allows you to click if you want to see the images in an email does not show up.

OK. I know, I should be using W Live Mail, but I like the way Windows Mail works as it does not serparate all of the mail from each email address I have, and what the heck, I'm used to it.

So, if anyone knows I'd appreciate it if you could tell me if this can be remedied. I already tried dragging the Windows Mail folder from a Vista PC back to the box and it makes no difference. I figure it's something in the registry.

Here's a jpg of what I'm talking about. The inset with the shadow is what the area should look like. The screen shot is what it actually looks like, with my email address blocked out in both examples.

THANKS FOR LOOKING!!

Answer:Does IE9 affect Windows Mail?

I can get Steam to launch, but only after having the PC be in sleep mode. I can't get Steam to start with Windows 10 either. I've been having trouble finding a solution to this issue all day, seems like I'm one of a very select few experiencing this.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted the blob files and various other things several times. No clue what the issue is.

I just finished developing and shipping this app for pinning your Steam games to the Start menu. Instead of the dreary icon tiles you'll have nice looking wide and square tiles for your games! It's really easy and fast to use too.

More updates are coming soon possibly with friends lists and live tiles.

Please check it out and feedback is very welcome!

I have about eight windows open semi permanently on Firefox, is there any reason why not.
I keep all BBC tabs on one and use others for various distinct topics.
Is there any reason to limit the number of windows open, it doesn't seem to affect the speed or stability.

Answer:Open windows, how many, does it affect performance

Your assumption is not correct, I have eight WINDOWS open with at least ten tabs on each.
I have 400M of RAM memory and a 2Tb disc.
Also running fibre optic at 40Mb which works very quickly, I don't know which of these factors are relevant.
It's just that I don't want to keep pulling things out of Bookmark and it reminds me of what I need to do if I keep them up alive otherwise they get buried and I don't do them.

So, I have my computer set up so that Windows 7 is on my C: partition, and all my programs are installed on my D: partition.

If I was to do a clean install of the C: partition, how would that affect the programs on the D:? Would I have to reinstall them all?

Answer:How does reinstalling windows affect other partitions?

most probably yes, you would have to install most of them.

some programs are 'portable' which means they don't have to be 'installed', they can just run from any folder - but many programs write keys to the registry, install files in other folders etc.

and you'll have to think about shortcuts in your start-menu too.

Shellshock-like Weakness May Affect Windows

As more people dig into the severity and depth of Bash vulnerabilities, it appears that similar Shellshock-like remote code execution is possible on Windows systems, with Windows servers in particular at risk for RCE attacks. The Security Factory, a Belgian security company, reported discovering a command injection vulnerability for Windows command-line shells that takes advantage of environment variables in a similar fashion to Bash exploits.

“What if we told you that a normal user in your network could take over the control of your Windows file-servers by just creating a special (but [not] so complex) directory-name in one of the directories he has access to?” the company wrote on its website. “In order to succeed, all the user has to do is create a folder with a special name and that you regularly run command-shell scripts for management purposes that have a (pretty common) coding vulnerability.”
Aviv Raff, CTO at Seculert, said there are similarities to Shellshock with this issue and that it extends even into the Windows 10 preview.

Win 8 .... stupid question:

I know i will then have to use it to start/load Windows on my PC...but here's the big question:
Will that same password be required to fire up my Kindle that is 'sync'd' with my PC & gets the same mail accounts on it that i get on my PC. (Google/R.R./AOL)
Because my PC will require a ''password' to fire up Windows, do i have to enter the same password when i turn -on the Kindle? in otherwords does the password for the PC affect the function of the Kindle ? thanks so much in advance ! Edythe

I run IE (factory installed and current version updated), as well as the latest "portable" (portableapps.com) versions of Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. All FOUR of these browsers are experiencing the same problem with displaying certain webpages and I am trying to identify the source. When I try these pages on any other computer (even an old XP desktop) everything displays fine so I know the problem is my system. It is an Acer netbook running Windows 7 Starter (it's all I need for my "on-the-go" activities).
The basic display problem is on 2 websites: Gmail and Ymail. Using the "advanced" version of these websites menus don't work and individual emails can take MINUTES to display. Using the Basic/Classic versions was my workaround but now Ymail has eliminated that option and I find I have to work off a different computer for those emails.
I run several well respected antivirus (Avast, Clamwin) and antispyware (Spybot, MBAM) scans all the time, as well as a routine CCLEANER analysis and so far not so much as one blip of a malware item has shown up.
Somehow this "feels" like a java or javascript type issue but even though I eliminated every "JAVA" folder and file on the system I could find the problem persisted. Where else and what else in the system could be a possible culprit in this bizarre bug affecting 4 separate applications?

I own a family 3-pack of Win7 Home Premium. I have installed this OS 6 or 7 times using the 3-pack product key (only 3 PCs ever have it running - old PCs get retired and new PCs get a clean install).

Activation has always gone as expected. The first 3 times were very easy over the internet. The next few times it required a call.

The last 2 installations were made on new systems with UEFI BIOS. I installed using an EFI ready USB stick and in UEFI mode at boot.

The Activation on these two installs was convoluted.

First, trying to activate over the internet returns an error message that basically says I can't use upgrade media to do a clean install. (This message has never appeared before that I recall).

Then, once that method has failed I do not get any option to use telephone activation. I have to type in option 4 in a slui.exe run to get the phone number.

Normal telephone activation does not go as usual. The installation string does not work (as normal), but I eventually get to the operator. But the operator cannot generate a validation key as usually happens.

The operator then checks to see if my product key is valid (it is), then sends me off to an Activation Technician.

The tech then needs to take remote control of my desktop. He tries everything I have already done (same results), then tries typing in an override code (that fails), then after some time finally comes back and types in a new Activation Key in the nine boxes. It takes a restart, and a new override ... Read more

Answer:Does a UEFI Installation affect Windows Activation?

This is perfectly normal
The Family Pack Keys are UPGRADES - and theoretically require a pre-existing installation of an activated Windows before allowing the install.
In fact, Windows will allow an installation without the prior one - BUT there is a tag which tells the Activation request that the machine was Clean-installed. This in combination with the Upgrade Key is what leads to the failure to activate.

There are at least three workarounds to this - the ONLY one which MS support is the double-install method.

No, it does not affect anything in other drives. You try reset first. If it does not solve your problems, then format drive c and reinstall.

Answer:What in Windows 7 can affect page displays in ALL browsers?

Win 7 64 bit Home Prem. on an Acer netbook here. No Java installed on the computer.
I use the Basic version of the <cough cough> new and improved version of Ymail. I have Javascript turned off at Yahoo. I get a message all the time that javascript is not running. I click continue and read my email with no problem.

Press the gear icon near the top right and if I remember one of the options is Basic.
It is limited but at least you get the page numbers back and you do not have to scroll through your entire inbox. You do not have to see the trending junl flashing at the top. I do not do Facebook so I have no interest in that cluttering my email page. I want a basic read, compose and send email.

Gmail: Press the gear
General, scroll down to Button labels. I've selected Text. If I select a message, I get more text displaying than I do with nothing selected.
Inbox, I've turned off all those tabs and only have Primary selected (default in the box above it)

I found the serious BUG which affect wide range of Windows systems, from Vista to 10, including Windows Server.
I've found that standard "defrag.exe" can cause file corruption under some circumstances.
The mentioned file corruption can happen during automatic maintenance (which compresses some files with NTFS compression and runs defrag.exe) and scheduled/manual defragmentation on system volumes
with compressed (NTFS compression) files.

During investigation i've found some interesting facts:
1. The file corruption is always happen with compressed (NTFS compression) files hardlinked to WinSxS file repository
2. The file corruption is always happen only with some specific files
3. This specific files should be fragmented (NTFS compression causes file fragmentation)
4. The file corruption does not change the file size
5. The file corruption is always resides at the end of the file, look like the data and the end of the corrupted files is just overriten with some garbage
6. The data written by the "defrag.exe" to the end of each corrupted file is random, but the data pattern is the same for each particular file

On my test system (Windows 8.1 Enterprise with Update) only those files was corrupted by the "defrag.exe":

Hello,
I've got Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux on different partitions, so if I were to recover windows 7 by the Advanced Recovery Method restoring to factory condition, would this action delete/affect my precious Ubuntu in any way? Is the restoring applying to that partition or the whole computer? Has anyone done this before?
I guess I could reinstall Linux afterwards if it will be deleted, but I'd prefer not to (recustomizing one operating system is enough ).
Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 Reinstall/Restore will affect Linux?

I'm pretty sure that would overwrite grub and replace it with Windows boot loader. but you can reinstall grub via a live CD, Have a look here. Hope this helps.

Edit : Also it would be wise to backup your home folder in Ubuntu before trying anything. This would save a lot of time if disaster were to happen.

Windows Vista is installed in separate hard disk from my games. My games are fully installed at this hard drive and they only have their shortcuts on desktop.

My question is, if i format the hard drive that Windows Vista is in, will my games be affected?
When i install my games at a separate hard drive from Windows do they create files/folders/registers in the hard drive that Windows is installed?

Answer:Formating Windows Vista will affect my games?

Most games rely on the windows registry, which will go when you format Vista, so you'll have to reinstall. HL2 engine games are a notable exception (cs:s, tf2, hl2, etc.), I wish more developers would make their games like that, but alas that is not the case.

On November 10, 2017, a vulnerability called #AVGater was discovered affecting some antivirus products. The vulnerability requires a non-administrator-level account to perform a restore of a quarantined file.

Windows Defender Antivirus is not affected by this vulnerability.

This vulnerability can be exploited to restore files that have been detected and quarantined by an antivirus product. To exploit this, malicious applications, including those launched by user-level accounts without administrator privileges, create an NTFS junction from the %System% folder to folder where the quarantined file is located. This NTFS junction can trigger the antivirus product to attempt to restore the file into the %System% folder.

This is a relatively old attack vector. By design, Windows Defender Antivirus has never been affected by this vulnerability because it does not permit applications launched by user-level accounts to restore files from quarantine. This is part of the built-in protections against this and other known user-account permissions vulnerabilities.

I'm drooling with anticipation to hear what the official comments are from the big OEMs regarding Windows 8 and how it will be affecting their sales of PCs laptops and desktops, and the avalanche of complaints they will have when customers receive their new OEM PCs.

Anyone working for HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba, ect that can give us insight into how these companies are reacting and gearing up for Windows 8?.

Honestly I wonder if some of the OEMs will simply continue to offer the option of Windows 7 until MS no longer supports it. I have a feeling that we WILL be seeing this angle from the more business oriented OEMs like HP, Lenovo, and Dell.

Answer:What are the OEMs official stance on how Windows 8 will affect sales?

I don't work for any of them, but I will offer some speculation to the mix. They are pumped and ready. Even LONG before a release of Windows 8 was announced for beta testing and development, Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and AMD were already building chips just for Windows 8 tablets. It's rumored that by the release of Windows 8 or at least November, there should be at LEAST 30 different tablet offerings running 8. I think Intel will be the main supplier of those chips as well. There is already huge speculation with the Surface tablet, although Acer poshes it. Speaking the business end, HP won't be offering a WinRT tablet and will be sticking with the traditional Windows to please their business partners, they're building tablets for Windows 8. One of their business oriented tablets already has some leaked pictures of it, as does a Dell tablet. Even at the recent PC expo this summer, ASUS, Acer, Samsung and other OEMs showed off their PCs running Windows 8. I would think there is a resounding tone of support and oomph for Windows 8 in the tablet space as well as the tradition PC space.

Although I would LOVE to hear from an insider as well...

I was planning to reinstall Windows 10 on my PC but I heard that the Creator's Update is coming out very soon.

My question was that is it different from the current Windows 10 we all are using? Is the update going to be available to normal desktop and laptop users?

If yes, I wanted to clean install the new update, so are the ISOs of the same going to be available?

Thank you.

I'm in the process of building a new core i7 system. I have all the parts, except the video card gtx 275 (which I'm still waiting to get by courier). My gf's pc has a pci-e ati x600 video card. I'm itching to put this system together and install my academic copy of windows 7 professional. I'm wondering if the change in video card will affect the activation? From what I've read, the serial is tied to the mobo. Is that correct? Barring a change in mobo, I should be ok?

Answer:Will changing video card affect windows 7 activation?

you could be certain it wouldn't by not providing the key & activating until after you have the card installed. You need to pick the correct version for your key however (if it asks) and you should get 30 days before you need to activate, which can be extended ~3 times.
