Question: More Windows Server Essentials Problems

I keep getting a 153 error on disk 3. How do I determine which disk is 3? I have 3 new 4TB drives, does this mean one of them is bad? I have like 70,000 of these errors now and smart tools etc all say all of my disks are healthy. I'm non longer able to stream most stuff from the server, and writing to this disk seems to be causing this error.

All I could find is this when searching for the error (Same error I am getting only I have it like 70k times over a few days).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Looks like it's time to replace the drive. As for which one it is; this is why when I build a server I label the drives prior to putting it into production ( by the low-tech method of booting up without a drive plugged in, determine which one it is, rinse/repeat for all drives in system ).

So I need to migrate my old windows home server to an OS that can use advanced format hard drives.

I installed WSE just now and was looking for some information on how to configure it.

I I though there was supposed to be a way to connect to the server without joining a domain though?

I notice the server does not how up on the network from my windows 7 PC How do I get to the connector software? Do I have to join the Domain?

Answer:Windows Server Essentials Domain

Define "connect" to it.

I've just purchased a new Dell server with Server2012 Essentials for a work project, and while it is configured for a domain I can US RDP and shared folders from computers that are not attached to the domain. Granted because it's all in development at the moment I am using a admin account on the server for access rights.

So, I am trying to setup Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

I have a new client with one server running Windows SBS 2011and 5 computers
that log into it.  The server is in a very unstable state throwing tons of errors at every angle, so the office has chosen to buy a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

My question is ? can I
setup the new server offsite and domain then when I get to the office completely
back up the old server, create new local accounts on the client computers and copy the data (My Documents, Favorites, Desktop Files and etc.) over to the new local account,
shutdown the old server, bring up and copy all the data to the new server, and then have the new client local accounts join the new domain?  Since this is such a small new domain,
does Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential require a DHCP and DNS server or can the SonicWall handle that?

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I'm running Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials and I started the http://server/connect on a Windows 7 Pro SP1 machine. The problem is that the connection process stopped...
If I manually start "C:\Windows\system32\Essentials\ClientDeploy.exe" -LaunchedFrom:resume -Server:192.168.178.10 the systems says "Your account is not a member of Administrators". The account I'm logged on with is __clientsetup__$.
Below is the log file, in the end it says "Add user to local admin group.". That clearly didn't happen (I checked).
Any suggestions?

I want to choose an OS for a media server, has to be Windows. I have valid keys. The server hw is pretty old, its an old SuperMicro with AMD Opteron, 6GB DDR2 etc.

Which of these is going to have the lowest resource usage? I don't need to use any pc backup features, just run it as a server with the usual tasks like Plex/Emby, downloading etc.

Answer:Server Essentials 2012 R2 vs Windows 10 vs WHS 2011?

2012 Essentials gets my vote but I bet it's less featureful than WHS2011. Based on how many strange happenings I have on my workstation at work with a clean non-OEM install of Win10 TH2, I would not use it for a server at all. Here's to hoping 2016 is better in reliability than the counterpart 10...

I have a WSE I use for backing up and stoaring data. I have like 10 hard drives connected to it 8 of which are running drive pool.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I am a first time windows server essentials user and i recently added my computer into the server but there is a conflict due to some kind of registry error and i can't delete the registry file from my computer since there is no user found on the permission for drop box. How do i gain permission to delete the registry

Answer:Registry Problem in Windows Server 2012 essentials

what do you mean by "added my computer into the server" as it's not clear what you did.
and clarify "there is no user found on the permission for drop box"
it should list local accounts and possibly the SID of a deleted domain user (if you mean you added your computer to the domain that Server 2012 Essentials creates)

Enjoy

Also, I earlier posted a link to a reported work-around for the connector software forcing workstations on the Domain.

Look that over as well if you intend on proceeding with this.

I have not tested this work-around yet, but probably will tonight.

Refresh me again on why you're so adamant about not allowing workstations to join the directory?

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Get it from Microsoft here.

I am trying to add Windows 10 clients to Windows Server essentials 2016. It seem that in order for the server to see the clients I must the clients join the server server Domain. (Currently they are in a workgroup).

It looks like one has to change the Windows10 clients to access the WSE-2016 DNS. So in windows 10 I go to networks, bring up the adaptor setting. Bring up "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IvP4) and instead of "Obtain the DNS address automatically" change it to always get the DNS address on the WSE-2016 (found with ipconfig).
Then within Windows I use ?System?, ?about?, and Join the server DOMAIN. It now works. The client can now see the Server domain.
I can then see the Server files and the server can see the Windows 10 shared files.
There are still problems however.
When I reboot the Windows 10 client. I have a brand new user screen with only some of my original desktop icons showing. Do I have to essentially rebuild up everything on my desktop again!
Question: Is there not a way to have my original desktop appear when I am joined to the Domain.
Second, since there will be times when the server is off I used the router static DNS IP address as the alternative address in the above dialog box of the Windows10 clients. Seems to work since the client can access the internet even with the WSE 2016 off.
Here is my second question. I have a few home laptops as well. If I force the DNS to the server what happens when I travel. ... Read more

Answer:Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

When Windows client computers are not joined to a domain they use the local SAM database to authenticate to the client computer. When the computer is domain joined you are using an AD user account to log into the computer. These accounts are going to have different SIDs as well as local profiles on the system. If you log into the computer with an account that has local admin access, you can simply move or copy the data from the local user account folder into the domain account user folder. The user folders inherit permissions from the root C:\Users\<username> so they should automatically gain access to the newly copied data.

I recently replaced our Windows Small Business Server 2003 with a Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials server using the same domain name and same computer name. When I tried to join an existing Windows 7 Professional computer to the new domain,

Hi,

According the issue, I suspect that your machine created a new user profile in this case. The user profile path is stored in registry, here
is the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList(check the picture).  Please check the value of ProfileImagePath.

I have just succeeded in hooking my Windows 10 client to Windows Server Essentials 2016. To do this I had to switch the W10 from a Workgroup to Domain setup.
All works fine except most of the desktop items originally on the client icons disappeared. Worse when I launce things like Outlook, Word etc. I have to initialize it from scratch.
How does one get all the settings, desktop icons etc. to re-appear on this new account that is now chanced from a Workgroup to a Domain setting.
I am an administrator (and only user) on both the W10 and WSE-2016. I see under users my original name on the W10/Workgroup and a new name. The new name does not have many files in it. I assume that?s the problem. But when I copy stuff from the old name folder across the programs are still not initialized correctly.

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Answer:Problems updating Windows Live Essentials 2011

I'm probably off base but my understanding is that the 2011 is HD capable. I ran MS Updates about a week ago and all was well. After installing, having log-in issues and uninstalling, I removed all I could find of Essentials, ran registry Mechanic and, after restart, ran MS Updates, for gigggles, and found updates for both video and audio chip-sets (drivers, I suppose) and a couple of others.

Maybe you could try MS Update and see what you find.

Just a thought from between my ears.

I've had hell of a time install Windows Live Essentials on XP. I have the problem narrowed down to the Photo Gallery Live component. When the PhotoLibary.msi goes it run in gets the "0x80070641 The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I have Windows Installer 4.5 installed and have tried reinstalling it with no help. If I actually run PhotoLibary.msi "Installer Stopped Prematurely" here is the error signature "szAppName : msiexec.exe szAppVer : 4.5.6001.22159 szModName : msi.dll szModVer : 4.5.6002.22362 offset : 0009c35a " I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I have used the Windows Install Clean Up utility. I have tried the hotfix WindowsXP-KB981669-x86-ENU.exe.

Here is what I get in the event viewer:

Hello, I'm going to finally be in-charge of a win 2k3 server that was recently absolutely destroyed by a hacking attempt and trojan download. I'm getting a fresh install and I'm curious on recommendations on basic security I should impliment.

I'm looking at a good software firewall, a good anti-virus program, but I'm curious on what else one should be looking for. I'm very new to this, and I'm learning a lot each and every day, but I hope that I can get a little guidance on this from fellow forumers, thanks

**NOTE - Tracert shows "double NAT", network before 192.168.1.1 is 192.168.254.254, I cannot change this from my current position but can in the future.

I have a domain setup, we'll call it 123.local, server name is WINSVR1. AD promotion was setup which then setup DNS. Router is setup to hand out 1.4 as the DNS server.

DNS queries in the browser seem fast and fine but NSLOOKUP queries have issues and I also cannot locate the local server when I'm trying to join PCs to the domain.

Here's a nslookup I tested from a client, unvisited before.

I can ping 123.local and nslookup 123.local along with winsvr1.123.local FROM THE SERVER but I cannot ping or nslookup either from a client. I can ping WINSVR1 (not FQDN) but that's probably from WINS or something.

Clients should be getting the DNS from the server, especially if you want clients to connect/use the server, especially for logons, policies, etc.
Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info
192.168.1.4 as DNS
192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)
255.255.255.0 as subnet

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

Any ideas?

I'm looking for a solution for a small business here in town, they are getting to the point where they need to have a small server to centrally locate files, printers, and so on. There are only 3 computers in the office so I'm thinking about going with either Server 2012 Foundation or Essentials.

However they need to be able to use the Remote Desktop client on their Windows 7 workstations to connect to the server from time to time. Does either of these versions of Server allow remote desktop connections and if so how many at one time?

Thanks!

Answer:RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I believe Foundation is pretty much like 2008R2 and allows 1 RDP connection for admin purposes
Essentials is more like SBS and allows 1 admin RDP connection as well.
Essentials is limited in certain functions and hardware

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

It sounds like it would be well-suited to a home file server/backup, as it does full backup of client systems. It sounds like it does some of what WHS does, but is meant for a business market.

I think at one time SBS was able to do WHS-like drive pooling. I haven't seen any info, but can SBS 2011 do that?

I am just curious how well it works. Right now I have Server 2008 running with a virtual WHS for backups, but it's not really optimal as backups aren't really backed up. I have the clients doing a SyncToy backup, but it's not as reliable as I would like. I thought SBS could replace the pair working together, and would remove some complications and maybe be a little more dependable.

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

RPC server and Printer Spooler problems
Hi i'm running windows xp professional edition.

i had to wipe my system after a nightmare virus infected my machine. my friend then reloaded xp pro from scratch. its all been working fine but i can't reload my printer onto the machine.

first i got error messages saying 'printer spooler service not running please restart computer to start service'. so i had a look in the services area and restarted the spooler service manually. i then tried to install again and got the same message. so i looked up solutions on the net that included clearing all the printer drivers from the computer and then restarting the computer with the services i needed (RPC server and Printer Spooler) set to automatic. i started the installation again and got the same message.

this time i went down the corrupted files route and replaced the spoolss.dll, spoolsv.exe, winspool.drv and winspool.exe files in the win32 system with fresh new ones off the installation disk. (I can't access winspool.drv as its part of winlogin.)ran the pirinter installation again and this time i got an 'RPC server unavailable' error. i again checked the RPC server and it was running in the services window. also all of its dependents are working fine so it must therefore be running. I tried again this time it said 'Remote Procedure Call unavailable'. By the way the DCOM server is already working.

Every now and then i get a script error when restarting ... Read more

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I just have to say that GFI Mail Essentials is the best damn anti spam program for servers. The Bayesian Analysis works great. The DNS Blacklist works great. I work for this company and before I came they were getting 500 spam e mails in their in-box a day (and GFI was installed) then I set it to learn off the outbound e mails for a while (bayesian filter) and as soon as I got enough HAM e mails I activated it and BAM. 90% of spam stopped. Take note people who work for companies with programs like this : If you have auto whitelist on and you have trend scanmail for MS Exchange it will add all the senders of the virri to your WHITELIST!
The thing to do is :
1. Turn off Auto Whitelist
2. Weed through the whitelist created.
3. Goto the GFI Mail Essential Reporter.
4. Set it to print out domain statistics on the screen, set it to base it on # of e mails and set it to outbound only and BAM you got all the major players that the company e mails.
5. Goto NOTEPAD (old school) and based on how many e mails that people in your company/network send to particular domain addresses add them to the whitelist as *@whatever.com, well first put em in notepad and then transfer em. It really does not take that long but weeding out the bad e mail addys takes a long *** time. Even if you add the bad domains to the blacklist, if they are on the whitelist it bypasses it (which sucks). However, if you are a lazy systems admin and don't have jack **** to do because you did it all it is a g... Read more

Hi All,
Any help appreciated with this one!!
I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials Server with Dell Perc 200 raid controller.
All generally works very well. But i have noticed if i copy files from one location to another location on the same hdd, the transfer rate starts reasonable and drops right down to 1-2mb / sec... or less... and sometimes goes to kb/sec and then sometimes drops to 0...
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed?? Is it windows settings, the raid controller etc???

I don't know if this is buried here on HOCP or not, but here it is just in case.

There is an article on SuperSite that explains how to add a computer to a Server 2012 Essentials machine (i.e. install the connector software) without it taking over the workstation and adding it to the domain.

Article...

Hopefully MS won't put some sort of bullshit block in for this in the final RTM.

Answer:Apparantly you CAN attach to Server 2012 Essentials without Domain

Nice to know. Might allow more people to use it w/o worrying about domain administration.

I have come across an apparently intractable problem.
I am running the latest Insider version of Windows 10 (Build 14352) on my desktop computer. I am running Windows 10 (build 10586) on my Laptop. .. Both my Desktop and my Laptop connect to the internet via a Sky Router. They have both been hardwired and wifi connected. My Laptop evinces no problems..
My Desktop, however, has developed an inability to connect to any internet sites, whether through the Chrome browser or Microsoft Edge. Whether I try when I am connected by cable or wifi I get the problem shown in the attached Adobe Acrobat screenshot file.
I have searched the problem on the internet and in particular I have carried out all of the steps recommended at the URL:
However I have not resolved the problem and cannot use the internet on my desktop.
My desktop differs from my Laptop in that it has more programs installed and has three security programs. Norton's Security with Backup, 360 Total Security and Heimdal Agent. I only have Norton on my Laptop.
I emphasise I can connect with my laptop, but not my desktop. This only happens on the desktop.
I am at a loss to know what to do now.
Can you help resolve the problem please

Hello all.

I've just started a new job and currently we're using
Win XP Pro as the server (we're upgrading to Win Server 2003 soon),
and the current server PC has a virus

I've downloaded the virus fixes from the Symantec site, as
well as the blaster worm patch for MS, but still get this:

http://www.glasgowbike.fsnet.co.uk/VIRUS.JPG

Also, we only have a 56k connecction at the minute, and the
server keeps wanting to dial up. When it connects, the
"bytes sent" figure is more than triple the amount of the
"bytes recieved" number - as all us 56k users know, this should
virtually never happen.

It's as if a virus is causing the dial up to try and connect and is
then sending something across the net.

I'm not new to PC's at all, but I am new to WinXP - can anyone
offer any hints? When we install the new Win Server 2003 (maybe
tomorrow) I'm going to wipe all the XP machines, but I'd still like to know what this problem is.

Thanks.:

Hi all,

For an unexplained reason, the past three business days when my clinics login thru TS in the morning, I am getting a blue screen. (Kernel_Stack_Inpage_Error). I have a terminal services server that connects to the domain controller and logs them all in. Then they use an application for our medical billing. This has worked fine for some time. I have made little changes on the server that would seem to cause this. I somewhat suspect that a particular login could be corrupt? Any thoughts?

I run on XP that's why I chose to post this here. I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong place.

I recently uninstalled MS Ess. because I figured out that it was causing severe performance issues ( atleast I think it was ). Everytime I ran a scan it would lock my computer up or slow it down to a snails pace. I could never get a full scan out of it. I would always have to restart, and everytime I did so it would take my rig 2 - 3 minutes to connect to the internet ( I run wireless ). So I quickly learned to not use MS Ess. .
Then, one night, it told me that it had detected a threat. I ran Avast, nothing. I ran Immunet, nothing.
I ran Malwarebytes, nothing. Finally, I ran Norton Power Eraser and still nothing was found. But MS Ess. is telling me there's a threat. Against my better judgement I ran a scan. Long story short, my computer locked up before it could even complete a quick scan and it took over a 1/2 hour before I was finally able to get back online because my computer would just lock up before it finished connecting. I'm pretty positive that I've fixed this problem just by uninstalling MS Ess. , has anyone else had these problems or similar?

I have recently joined the IT team at work, me being the other guy to help the guy that did it on his own

Theres a lot of work to do to get things running correctly, the company has grown a lot of the last four years, but still has old equipment

Anyway, to cut to the chase.......................As i came onboard, or reason why, a number of employees couldnt receive or send mail, and they couldnt print

I have resolved all this by, installing, updating and running > Spybot, Adaware 2007, UniBlue and Kaspersky antivirus

The old antivirus programs expired in 06, some 05 The total amount of things found and removed are stagering

Next i turn my attention to the file server, running Windows 2003, and the router, the router is goosed, the net connection runs dead slow, but speeds up if you reboot it, for a while

Its a basic home thing, 6 years old, but we have 15 pc's connected to the network. Now the server................No protection at all !!!!

Installed Kaspersky for windows 2003 server, up-date and ran it, = 10 trojans and 2 hacktools

Things run great for 2 weeks, then 1 employee carnt acsess the server, but can get on the net, day after another, 2 days later another

At the time the first guy had problems, i ran a CMD in run, and i pinged the server, no problem, i did IPCONFIG/ALL nothing wrong there either. No reason at all he should have a problem, not via his desktop settings

We have two main things on the server, Sage, and an Hire program... Read more

Question, I am new to active directory and windows 2003 all together and I need help I have set up the switch, both computers hooked up, set the computer and the user in and I am still getting that the domain is not there, I have a connection but I tried to ping the server to workstation, and visa versa and I am still getting the same message.

Answer:windows 2003 server problems

does the AD server have DNS installed? DNS is required for AD.

You say a ping from the wkst to server failed? this means you have a network config issue. Double check your network connection settings. If you can't ping that server you wont be able to join the domain.

I have a network that works fine with a router in place for the DHCP. I have a new server that I am wanting to put in place for the DHCP and run Active Directory. I set up the server with the same scope for ip address so that I would not have to go and change any static ip systems. The server is able to surf the internet but the clients are not.

The clients are pulling valid IPs from the server, to test this I repaired a systems IP address and it pulls the right IP and shows up in the server DHCP list.

I have sonfigured the DNS forwarding to the ISP ip and still nothing.

Anyone have any ideas

If you need more information just let me know.

Thanks

Try pinging the loopback (127.0.0.1) on each client computer to verify the services needed are running and if those come back good, ping the router. Let me know what happens from there.

Hey there,

A few days ago I installed windows server 2003 (Enterprise Edition) on my old computer, made a little domain for my house – this is where the problem is… users can log in using the server but when someone tries to log in on another workstation they get the message saying “The local policy of this system does not permit you to login interactively” this happens on every computer except the actual server and on every user account except Administrator.

I have researched this on Google and tried the obvious things but still no luck.

Anyone else had this problem or know anything about?
Cheers

Ok its my turn to ask a question, Windows Server 2003. I just downloaded the trial (as I do with everything, if it works and I like it I'll purchase it.) I acquired an older machine that runs good. P4, 1GB RAM, AGP graphics etc. I want to run WS03 on it, i tried to install it, it gets to the bit of install where down the bottom it says Setup is starting Windows and doesn't go any further. It installs and runs Win XP fine ... any suggestions??

Ok, I've been fighting this RIS all day. I've never had a problem with this on a 2000 Server. I have RIS and DHCP installed on my Domain Controller. My client is on the same subnet as my server. I'm having this problem at work and in my test lab at home. Everything seems to be configured right, the RIS is authorized with DHCP and everything checks out fine. My firewall on my server is turned off. When I boot my PXE client, it seems to time out trying to get DHCP and then states that the boot filename cannot be retrieved. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,
I am running a windows 2003 server.

The server is infected and if connected to the internet keeps sending data to a remote server and slows other workstations internet connection on thew same network.

I installed tcp viewer and noticed a executable by name 5XVREJEW8C2.EXE constantly sending data with atleast 10 simultaneous sessions.

This name keeps on changing and its location according to tcp viewer is c:/windows but could not locate it .

It has hijacked taskmanager, internet options, windows firewall and also does not allow me to log into safe mode.

Have run spybot search & destroy, malware bytes, avast virus removal tool but none seams to fix the problem.

Can any one tell me how to fix it.

Thanks in advance......

I have a desktop and laptop both running Windows 8. Desktop has no problems at all but the laptop is getting very annoying.
I was using the Google Chrome Browser and if I opened a tab or a link a message would come up saying the it was unable to connect to the Proxy Server. I changed the settings in Chrome but if I opened a new window it would do it again. Thinking it was the browser I changed to use Firefox but I have the same problem with that.
Can anyone help on how to sort this out?

Answer:Windows 8 Proxy Server Problems

Check internet options and under the connections tab, settings, untick the 'use a proxy server.....'. If it keeps coming back to use a proxy server then you might have some malware. Run your security scans and try the free Malwarebytes select the free download, update and run a full scan.

Where do I begin.

Our network specialist (who is in another city) advised us to disable the "Remote Access Connection Manager" Service to avoid any intruders from coming in to our webserver.

Well, our technician also disabled the "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager" Service, the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" Service, and the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator" Service.

When we shut down and rebooted, all hell broke loose!

Our websites on the werbserver are now not working, and to makematters worse, we can't open up any "properties" on any services to re-start/enable them. In fact, we can't open property sheets for any program.

Also, when we tried to view contents of our hard drive, the WINNT folder shows 174 items, but no icons are displayed are can be selected (this only hapens to this folder). In the network Places, 4 items are said to exist, but none are shown.

We have tried everything possible. We can't start the services that we disabled because we don't have a property sheet that shows. We know it acknowledges a property sheet because when we try to close the services window, it tells us to close all property boxes.

Any suggestions as to how to reverse this mess?

Thanks a million.

We have just recently upgraded our Windows NT4 Server to two Windows 2003 Standard Servers one for applications and one for User Files, we have around 650-700 users all of which can log on and use the system perfectly fine, we have not changed any settings for any users however one user has a laptop like many other users running Windows XP Professional whenever this user logs on to the network he gets an error message telling him his profile cannot be found but his profile is there and all settings for the user point to his profile. When the user clicks OK the computer loads with the drives which he has mapped appearing in my computer but when he tries to go into the drive he cannot get access it. I have even resorted to wiping the laptop and re-installing XP from afresh but still the problem occurs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi , i need urgent help , here what happens:
I have a server PC on which was installed windows 7 first then on another partition I installed the windows 2008 server , when i boot i usually got 2 options to select.
Now the problem is that i don't want windows 7 partition so i tried to format it from windows 2008 , I could not , so I started with a Windows 2008 DVD and deleted the windows 7 partition successfully . Now when I restarted , it gives a message that there is no operating system at all?
what to do? I am pretty sure that the windows 2008 partition is still existing, i can either see it files through cmd.
how can I fix this , specially that it is the main DC in my company.please help

Answer:Problems when trying to boot windows 2k8 server and deleting windows 7

You did this on the main DC of your company? That could get you terminated in many places.

I'm not sure if it exists for a server OS, but if there is a repair method, such as a start up repair from booting the disc, I would try that.

I thought I'd start a new thread on this since I don't see one anywhere.
This is using the "Official" beta downloaded directly from Microsoft, not the leaked version.

So with that said I'll start off with the first problem I've encountered using it.
It is with the Update function failing when trying to download the update.
With error code: X080240022 (Screenshot)

If this happens to you like it has to me 3 times so far the fix is just restart your computer then update Microsoft Security Essentials & all is fixed & fine.

Can't seem to figure this one out; any help would be appreciated.

We have a network running Windows 2000 servers. We're putting in some Linksys RV042 routers (so some IPs have changed) and creating VPNs. The servers using the newly installed routers are able to talk back and forth, but the problem is with 2 particular servers not being able to communicate, kind of...

We've successfully established a VPN tunnel between 2 servers (let's call them Server A and Server B) but they can't ping each other. I can log into Server A and remotely login to Server C, D, E, etc. and remotely login from that server to Server B, and vice versa (B to another, another to A). When I do a tracert from Server A to Server B using the server's IP address, nothing. Doesn't even hit its own gateway. When I try tracert from Server B to Server A, it hits its gateway (internal address) and the router's default gateway (external address) then cops out.

I'm thinking there's an issue with Server A's settings, probably firewall/permissions or something. Any ideas or suggestions?

I built a server to store all my movies/tv shows on and am running windows home server. I can copy files from my server to my main computer (running xp sp3), which also runs xbmc, at good speeds. When trying to watch HD movies/tv shows there are times when the picture messes up (hard to explain the problem, looks like giant pixels are showing up on the screen) and the network activity when watching shows/movies spikes up and down. i have them both hooked up to a dir-655 router with cat6 cables.

when watching media over xbmc

We unfortunately installed an IBM server (windows server 2003) 2 weeks ago and the guy who installed it is too busy to come back to sort out user access problems that we started to have when we tried to log in the next day! I am the only onsite IT support this non-profit org has and I am a volunteer - studying 1st year degree Computing and IT.

One of the problems we are having is we cannot close down a word template when logged in as a user without getting a whole string of "error" messages ending in Changes have been made to the global template. I can close the document by clicking File then Close however. So everyone is logging in as Administrator which is not good.

I solved the problem on 3 of the XP machines by putting a shared folder on the desktop (when logged in as administrator) and giving full control to all users. However, there are 3 more XP desktops where this doesn't work. When i right click the word doc - properties - I find it is classed as Read Only and the Security properties box shows a different path e.g.

Group or user names:

Administrators (computer name\administrators)
User name ([email protected])
SYSTEM

In the PC where the word doc closes perfectly well the route path is

User name (domainname\username)

I have never had any training on server administration and our Central Telephone Helpdesk cannot help!!!

Any ideas please?

Hey everybody

I'm having some trouble with creating shares and permissions withing Windows Server 2003. I want to have a share on the server that only one user can map a drive to.

I would tell what steps I have taken, but I have done so many things, it might be best to just start from scratch, since nothing is in the folder yet anyway. Can someone give me a quick guide to creating a share, and making it where only one user can access it?

I'm creating it on the C: on the server.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I posted earlier that I needed a solution to my problem, well I found one. I got the eval version of windows server 2003 (180 days to use it), my school is looking into purchasing a license as I type this.

Anyway, onto my problem. I have everything set up and running, DHCP server, DNS server, Active Directory, etc. Plus I have all the users created. Everyone can login (I have mandatory profiles set) and do their work and that's fine. However, here's my problem, I created a share directory called "Users", this directory contains all the user folders (by their full name, so "John Smith" for example). I have set the correct permissions and everything (I believe) but people get an error everytime they try and save, something along the lines of permissions not being set or the disk being read only.

Just to be clear, if person X is logged in, and they try and get into person Z's folder they get access denied (and vice versa )

I have each folder set (under the security tab of the properties box) so that "Administrators" and that particular user have FULL access to that folder, it's subfolder, and it's contents (on the advanced tab I have deselected the inherit permissions thing).

So any ideas on why they can't save in their designated folder?

Answer:Windows Server 2003 permission problems

share permissions take the most resterictive between ntfs permissions and sharing permissions no? make sure you have them configure correctly to allow the onwers to write to their dir.

I am a volunteer network administrator for a small private grade school. I’m running into some problems with a Windows 2000 file server we have had donated to us. I’ve had a lot of experience with NT server but limited experience with W2K. We have all XP pro workstations.

I’m hoping that if I list the symptoms we are having, someone will be able to point me in the right direction to find some answers. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here are the symptoms:

1. Login is very slow. It takes a few minutes for users to login. This happens on every user – even administrator.

2. Network browsing is very slow. After a few hours of being logged in, you cannot browse the file server at all. You have to logoff and login again to get it to work. Even after doing this, network browsing is very very slow.

Thanks for your help.

Hello all,

I got a question which I hope you all may know the cause and would like some professional opinion too. It will be asked in two topics "Share Problems" and "Server".

Thank you for your time!

{SHARE PROBLEM}
We got 5 computers, 2 is running Windows 7 Professional, the other 3 is running Windows 7 Home Prem.

All of them are under the same "Workgroup" and "Homegroup" as well as the same settings for Network (Advanced + Homegroup). Also all are using Admin account access (Owner Admin settings) for their computer respectively.

Now when I set one of the computer to "Share" a folder (Home Prem), I just gave "Homegroup" with "Read/Write" access.

All computers except for one computer (Win7 Professional) is able to just click on the Network and access the folder, it is just one which will always ask for a "User/Pass".

Considering everyone has the same settings, I don't see why the Win7Pro is having this trouble and always asking for a User/Pass.

The other 2 Home Prem and the other Win7Pro can easily access it without any problems at all (click on Network -> WinHPrem computer -> Shared Folder).

Is there any ideas and troubleshooting I can do to resolve this?

When I try I get this error:

I can move the mouse around and interact with windows, but all applications that need hard drive access will appear to go non-responsive.  About 60 seconds later, everything wakes up and all applications become responsive.  There are no errors or warnings in the Event Viewer.  I worry that I am overtaxing this laptop- it is configured with a SSD and a 7200 rpm drive in the expansion bay and 16GB of memory.  I am using the 135W power supply. There are some drivers that appear to not be installed, including:PCI Simple Communications ControllerBroadcom Bluetooth DeviceBase System DeviceUnknown Device I don't know if this is a hardware issue, a driver issue, or just a general incompatibily issue.  Again, I bought this machine because Lenovo had a great reputation with me before with new OSes and server OSes running on their laptops.  I have to demo using HyperV, so I need to have Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on the laptop - I don't have an option for this. Thanks,Shan

Answer:Problems with Windows Server 2008 R2 on W510

Hi, shan_mcarthur bgI am running Windows Server 2008 R2 too on my W510. Previously I used 2008 R2 Datacenter and it is a bit faster and more responsive than other edition of R2 and Windows 7 (I understand priority setting are different). But the way it uses ram is more aggressive and my W510 has only 4GB, so I am running 2008 R2 Enterprise now. So far no problem. (Dual boot with Win 7 64bit Lenovo Preloaded) Not to worry, the power supply should be able to take your load, a mobile workstation is built to run for high demands. Your W510 should be really a high-end submodel to be that powerful.Does this problem occur when you are running Windows 7 Lenovo-preloaded. If yes, contact Lenovo Service Center, it may be a hardware failure... If no, try to download and install all the latest drivers and BIOS from Lenovo to see if it solves your  problems. For usage of bluetooth, go to www.win2008r2workstation.com for bluetooth support and special made drivers for Server 2008 R2. I also require Hyper-V for learning and preparing for school academics and competitions. I would suggest that dual-boot with Lenovo Windows 7 in case of some major failures (to play safe), the Lenovo Engineer would say it may be caused by unsupported OS. With 2 different OS having the same problem will make the things faster and easier to be diagnosed and resolved. Best RegardsPeter

Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me resolve a problem that i have been having since day 1 with windows 7.

The problem is that my PC will occasionally freeze requiring a hard reset.

The PC itself is solely used as a HTPC with Media Center running on it 24/7. Its running Win7 64 bit. There doesn't seem to be any common tasks that it will freeze up on, although a possible slight propensity for it to happen at 100% CPU use (encoding).

Its not heat on the CPU (it has also happened when at idle), all my drivers are up to date, I thought it might be Catalyst Control Center but it froze without this too, bios was updated the other week and yet i had three freezes in a day today.

The main clue (I think) is that there is always some problem with the time when it reboots after the freeze. A lot of the time it will wake up and think that its 2000, exactly 10 years to the second has been lost from the system clock. obviously this affects the scheduling of tasks, scheduled recordings and so on. Until recently there's been very little detail in the event log, often i have seen the last 1/2 hour to 5 hours missing completely and showing the wrong date when it resumes.

The last three freezes it has (seemingly) been able to retain all the even log and i have noticed that there is a event relating to synchronising the system time shortly before the freeze. When it has rebooted on each occasion, if i go through to changing the internet time settings, it tells me that the time server ha... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 Freeze and Possible Time Server Problems

Have exactly the same problem but at least I think I've found out why. The culprit appears to be searchindexer.exe.
My freeze is fairly random except that it will always occur when the tv listing update runs in the early am.
My setup:
- Windows 7 home premium
- Originally an ATI 4300 video card - now it's a Nvidia 430
- Hauppage PVR
- Asus N4L motherboard with 2M memory
- Home Server for pictures, music, etc.
I've gone thru a heck of lot of testing. Here's what I did:
1. Replaced the ATI with Nvidia. I too was seeing a bunch of errors and suspected the flood crippled the system. Didn't fix anything. Nothing in any of the system or media center logs; system just froze and required a reboot.
2. Replaced the hard drive and cable. Denada.
3. Replaced the memory. Denada,
4. Replaced the hard drive. Denada.
5. Double checked and reloaded all the latest drivers. Denada
6. Killed all the services that I could reasonably kill. Denada
7. Cleaned out all of the extraneous autoruns. Denada
8. Rebuilt the entire Windows 7 media center. Turned of aero and only loaded Total Media Player. Set up Home Server. Went thru the autorun and service cleanup. Downloaded all new drivers. Turned on monitors for temperature of CPUs and GPU - all remained fine. Ran memory test for two days with no errors. Denada and still not a single event log error posted - the system just stopped.

OK, well since the guy who usually takes care of our network has left the company, I have been thrust rather abruptly into this position. I'm fairly computer savvy, but I've never done much network administration.

So I've been upgrading a few computers to Windows 7 Ultimate and after a fair bit of wrangling, managed to get them all taken care of (except who knew that Win7 Home couldn't access a simple network... wtf?).

But I've got my boss's brand new rig all set up and loaded with all the software necessary, but for some reason, I can't get it to log in to the server for the life of me.

I have used identical settings as on the old XP box and have double checked net passwords on the server side. I followed the exact same procedure to set up the network as on the other machines. But no dice.

Problem #1 - There is no login window. Actually, it did come up a few times and I'm not sure why, but right now it just automatically logs in and then says that it doesn't have permission, without actually giving me a login window to enter my ID and Password.

I have gone into the credentials, erased them, created them, changed them. Everything under the sun, but right now, I can't even get a simple login.

Unknown factor - when it did give me a login window a couple of times, it showed me the name of the path as <usernamedragon>, which is what I set the computer to so I could access the internet to build the system while the boss was still working with his old box wi... Read more

Answer:Problems logging in to network server with Windows 7

Eschelar, Welcome to the windows 7 forums.
1. Are you trying to logon to the server via Active Directory?
2. Is the boss's computer joined to the domain?
3. Have you setup the network as a work network?
4. Have you setup the network discovery to yes?

Questions..

I am trying to set up for media streaming from my PC to my Sony Blu-Ray player using the
DNLA. I have a good network connection and have set up all permissions with Homeshare.
I get everything done and when I go into Media Player and click on the Stream tab to turn
on media streaming nothing happens. Also on my Blu-Ray player there is a DLNA server
tab should show up but it does not. Does anybody have any ideas on what to do to fix this.
Thanks.

News flash, Windows media player in Windows 8 can not play DVD's or stream them, there is no built in DVD player in Windows 8 so it's not broken, they simply removed the functionality, it can do music but that's about it.

I use Windows Media Center for streaming.

Hi, I just bought 2*2GB Crucial PC5300 667Mhz memory to upgrade my T61 which has 2*1GB installed before. Hardware insallation is smooth and easy, I followed every step in the service manual. Then I reboot the computer, BIOS can recognize that it has 4096MB ram installled. My operation system is Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64bit, which, unlike those 32bit system, I am pretty sure it can manage memories larger than 3GB. In the system, it found and and showed there is 4GB memory, however in other softwares like Everest, CPU-z, or Photoshop, even in task manager they all told me that there is only 2GB of memory. I was confused, and thinking it could be the problem of the new Crucial memory, then I install only ONE 2GB memory each time. They both can enter the system and be recognized as 2GB. So the new Crucial memories dont have any problem. Then I conbined the old 1GB memory and new Crucial 2GB memory to boot the system. Windows also can recognize 3GB of ram but only 2GB of it can be used.  It seems 2GB is the threshold of this system, any combination higher than 2GB can be recognized but cannot be used. However it should not be like this since it is Windows Server 64bit, theratically it can manage more than 512GB of memory. What happened? What should I do to eliminate this threshold? Problems of Windows? Problem of T61. BTW, I have updated the laptop BIOS to the latest version. 07-01-2008 This is the snapshot of the sreen, my Windows is Chinese versi... Read more

I use Windows 2008R2 Server on my X61.  I love the combination. I have been using Hyper V up until about a week ago.  After a recent update of the drivers I am getting errors that HyperVisor is not installed/supported/running. I am forced to use the Windows 7 drivers for everything since I cannot find Windows 2008 server drivers specifically. Now I also notice that the PCI Simple Communications device is missing drivers and another 2. Which are the best drivers to use for the X61's? Can someone please provide a link? Sean
