WSE 2012 Designated Server Backup Drive?

Question: WSE 2012 Designated Server Backup Drive?

So I installed WSE2012 and stablebits drive pool. Now I installed the connector software on my windows 7 machine. I'm trying to configure backups and it telling me I have no drives and cannot use drives in the storage pool (Well I can use them but it says it will reformat the hard drive). So I need to buy a dedicated hard drive just to do backups?

Preferred Solution: WSE 2012 Designated Server Backup Drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WSE 2012 Designated Server Backup Drive?

The server backup drive has to be non pooled internal drive or external drive. And Server 2012 will reformat it.

Hi all

I have 2012 standard trial and I want to use it to backup my client machines - what WHSv1 does for me at the minute.

Is there a way to add essentials like functionality to standard? I don't want to purchase any licenses as this is for a home testing environment.

Looking to de-comm WHSv1 to free up the extra gig of RAM.

Why am I getting this message?

My server is running WSE 2012, plain, NOT R2, and I'm getting the above message. The server backup drive is a 8 TB USB 3 drive and has 4.6 TB free. My main data partition has 2.6 TB which rarely changes - the only real change being the workstation backup.

I've checked Technet and Google, and I'm obviously not putting in the right search terms.

So why am I getting this message?

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

I have recently a built a new system, but when I installed Windows, it recognized that my
internal USB Card Reader was letters C: through E:, my SATA "DVD-RAM" drive was G: and my local SATA disk was H:. Is there any way around this besides disconnecting my Card Reader from the motherboard and reinstalling XP? I think I connected the HDD and DVD Drive in the right order (SATA 0 for HDD, SATA 1 for DVD) but I want a free way to fix this besides doing what I explained earlier

A friend of mine had some work done on her pc. She does not use her 3-1/2" floppy, up until now. But her pc says it is 5-1/4" floppy drive. How can she change it to the right style floppy, without knowing what make/etc disk drive she has?

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:wrong disk drive designated

It should be a setup option in the bios. When she starts her machine she should see a message press key to enter setup.
Once in setup go to the standard cmos setup menu.

Should have options there to configure the floppy drive, she needs to select 3.5 and 1.44mb, save and exit.

Hope it's that simple.

Does she even have a 5 1/4 drive in the computer???

I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a partition of my 1TB drive. I recently bought a 240GB SSD and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit there. I did a completely fresh install, since I needed to move things around on the original partition anyway. So basically, I put all the drives in (which was probably my first mistake) and fired it up and low and behold, it booted immediately from my original drive, despite the fact that I had set the SSD as the first boot option in BIOS. Grr.. Anyway, I ran the setup for Win 7, hoping that would resolve the issue and I now boot (sort of) exclusively from the new SSD and into the new install of Windows.

EXCEPT... now that I've moved everything off the original drive that I wanted to keep (onto a 3rd drive) I want to delete the old Windows partition and merge it with some other unused space on that drive... but it won't allow me to do that, since the old Windows partition is listed as the System drive, while my new Windows partition is listed as the Boot drive. I can't seem to figure out how to change this.

The other strange issue that I came across... is that I went back into BIOS and removed the option to boot from the old drive completely... and then it wouldn't even boot at all. It kept asking me if I wanted to make a floppy disk of the SATA drivers.

Answer:Need to change the drive designated as the System Drive

I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

Answer:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

My school gives us server 2012 standard for free. I am wondering if it's possible to install it as 2012 essentials with the same features as essentials kind of like how win pro had every thing home had. Or are the features of server essentials not included in standard? (Features like full pc back up and the dashboard like whs 2011)

Answer:can you setup server 2012 standard as 2012 essentials?

Different media for the install, Server Standard and Datacenter use the same media. Essentials has it's own install disk and Foundation and Storage Server share the same media.

How does one install Vista on an already formatted, letter designated hard drive?

Couldn't find an answer or the correct exact forum for this question, so I'll just fire away here and hope for the best....

Let's say someone has a hard drive that is already formatted, letter designated and tested -

For instance -

A brand new hard drive is purchased and tested -

In order to test it, it must be formatted -

To be formatted, a drive letter must be assigned -

Cannot name it "C", as that is the primary drive that the system's operating system is already on -

So the drive is designated as "X" (or just any other random letter) -

Physically install the above drive in the same physical location as the previous primary drive (that the system's operating system is already on), thus, physically replacing it -

Insert the Vista full version DVD and begin the installation -

Vista asks which drive -

If the new drive, "X" is chosen...

1.) Will Vista automatically change this (above) new drive's letter designation to "C"?

~ or ~

2.) Will Vista just go ahead and install on "X", leaving it's designation as "X", thus, booting, OS, etc. will now all be from from "X"?

~ or ~

3.) Will Vista just go ahead and install on "X", leaving it's designation as "X", thus, booting, OS, etc. will now all be from from "X" ...BUT... The drive letter of the 'boot, OS, primary... Read more

Answer:How does one install Vista on an already formatted, letter designated hard drive?

Hello Joe, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You would just do a clean install of Vista as usual, but select the formatted HDD "X" that you want to install it on during installation.
Clean Install with a Full Version of VistaWhatever OS you startup, it's drive will have the C letter by default. Even if it's not C in another OS.

Hope this helps,

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

I have a server running SBS 2003.

The built in backup software is not playing nice with the tape drive for a few months (see other thread) but when dumping on an external usb hard drive it runs ok.

So i was thinking of getting BackupAssist and an external usb hard drive (regular ide or sata) and use it for daily backups while keeping the tape drive just for monthly backups (1 time per month).

Anyone doing this? Whats your opinion?
I've been trying to avoid using hard drives for backups (because of the whole can-break-any-time thing) but in this case i might do it, specially considering price/capacity when compared to the existing DAT72 solution.

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

Answer:Server 2012 R2 - Internet Explorer Proxy Server Issue

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

What does everyone else use here to backup a server?

Would 5 external USB hard drives not be sufficient enough?

depends on what youre backing up i guess. i use two 1TB external usb drives and ntbackup which works well for me. im going to be picking up backup exec soon though.

So Im finally putting my big boy pants on and setting up a real home server. There are going to be 3 main uses for this server

1) Home server - Mainly for streaming to all my raspberry pi's and other windows devices but also as a network drive for my ssd only pcs

2) Remote server - Grabbing files away from home, remote vnc etc

3) Web server - Been working on a small personal website for a while now that I want to be able to host myself once it goes live. This isn't my main use for the server and if it isnt going to jive well with my primary uses I can always build a seperate pc for that use.

So if cost wasnt a concern between home server 2011 and server 2012 which would you choose based on my planned usage? I plan on using drive pool or drive bender with whatever I choose. So I would also appreciate some recommendations on which application you would choose with your choice of operating systems. Also, I can't seem to find definitive differences between the server 2012
releases (standard, foundation, essentials) It seems to be more of a licensing thing, so furthermore, which version of server 2012 would you go with?

Sorry guys, Im a total noob at this

Answer:Home server 2011 or Server 2012?

Personally, I'm going with WHS2011. I'd rather start with an OS that has most of it's bugs worked out, over an unknown. Since you can get a license for ~$50, why not start there to get your feet wet, then upgrade to Server 2012 once the kinks have been worked out?

I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Hi, just so I don't destroy my setup I Like to ask if anyone else have restored their system from a image made by Acronis true image home plus Livecd 2012?

My setup is the following:

Windows 7 32 bit on 1 HDD with the following NTFS partitions: Partition 1(Reserved for system - Bootloader), partition 2(C: windows), partition 3(E: Data and backup).

Now, I have made one incremental image including Partition 1 and 2 + MBR, but not partition 3 - and backed this up to Partition 3.

What I'm curious about is, if True image without any problems can restore partion 1 and 2 + MBR without destroying Partition 3?

Or if I should leave MBR out?

Is there any problems with drive attributtes, like bootable partition?
I have used Norton ghost for years, ever since the first Dos version, and never had any problems - the problems come with Vista and up because of the bootloader partition.

Hope someone already have tried this and can answer my question - Please, I know it should be possible, but I like answers from someone already tried this or seen it done, because theory is one thing and practice another.

With kind regards

I have been using Acronis 2012 for differential backups, but it seems like it's taking them a long time to complete. When I begin the backup, the program may show that is going to take an hour and 40 min. But then, when I checked later the time might have changed to two hours. Sometimes, it takes a backup seven or eight hours to complete. Is this usual? I am thinking that maybe some programs are causing the backup program to restart. Could this be the case? I also thought that maybe my screensaver program was causing the backup program to restart and so I turned off the screensaver during the backup. However, I don't know if this was the cause for the program to take so long. Do you know why and Acronis backup would take five hours to complete? Hi everyone,

I have a big challenge. Our establishment is expanding next month from one location to two locations and on both locations we are going to use Server 2012. The intention is that a number of folders should be available in both locations. Users must login with the same credetials on both locations. Since I'm fairly new to networking, I do not know how to get started. I already searched on google but found nothing useful.

Youtube. When I took my "Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server" course, nearly all the lecture material was on Youtube. I'll try and see if I can dig up the videos today. It sounds like you're going to want a simple domain with two domain controllers, and maybe some caching if the link between the two sites is slow.

Fooling around with a free win2012 r2 server and must have messed something up since I can't see it on the network anymore. I just can access the network shares through typing in its ip address but typing in its name it doesn't come up anymore.

I have it setup as just a simple workgroup and was fooling around with vpn since I wanted to learn that, I installed it and uninstalled it and now I can't see it on any of my computers attached to the network.

I also cannot remote login into it anymore with either the name or the ip address.

Any ideas?

Boy I feel dumb.

Question: Server 2012 R2

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of updating our environment to Server 2012 R2 and I've also added (2) Hyper-V clusters (2-nodes each) and all is going amazingly well honestly.

My one issue however, is that I've re-built our file server but I can't seem to figure out how to re-build the structure that I had for the user home drives.

A brief run-down, I have FILE\HOME\%username% - the file share that is setup for this has Domain User permissions on the file structure (I think, I'm assuming that's the Permissions tab in 2012) and for the Share permissions I have it set to Everyone (full).

I'm not sure what I'm missing although I know it's a permissions thing - I want to set it up so that each user has permissions to their folder only - right now, they are getting permissions to all folders - although they don't know this as they're only seeing their own folders but they could easily navigate to the other users if they knew how.

Can someone run down what permissions needs to be setup for Server 2012 (most of what I can find are for Server 08).

Answer:Server 2012 R2

There may be a few missing details because each environment is different.
Create a folder that will hold the user home drives
Edit the NTFS permissions for that folder (security tab) and go into advanced, disable inherit and convert to explicit.
Remove Users group permissions

Add principal Domain User (or another group all your users are in) and set this folder only then add permissions read, list, read permissions, read extended attributes
Go back to advanced sharing and share the folder and give Full Control to Everyone group
Add DFS Namespaces and Replication (optional) under file and storage services role
Create a domain DFS root named whatever you want then add the share into that root
Select all users in ADDS and edit home profile, then point <drive letter> to \\domain\dfs\share\%username%
When you do this it will automatically assign user permissions when you type in the home drive and hit OK. I add read to the top level folder just so users don't get errors if they try to back out of their folder. They can't read anything just see the folders (you can even set it to they cannot see the folders but it's more complicated).

This system also works good because you can change file servers in the future without having to edit users again. You just add a new share with the same name to DFS and replicate everything over, then remove the old share.

About to do a complete wipe of my hard drive and reinstall Windows 7. My concern is being certain that I have Windows Live Mail 2012 backed up. I have five different accounts running through WLM and it is critical I don't lose any emails sent or received.
I took a look at the tutorials and played around but I must be doing something wrong. For example, when I trying exporting and then importing some test messages I wasn't able to find them. The storage folders, where I think the test emails should have been imported, were empty. Tried a few times and always the same result.
Now I'm thinking it might be easier if I just back up all the folders in the Windows Live Mail folder on the C drive. Is this a viable and fool proof way of saving all emails and then being able to restore them?

Answer:Windows Live Mail 2012 Backup Questions

If the accounts are IMAP, the mail will be retained on the remote server no matter what you do with your local client (except for deleting mail from within the client, which will delete it remotely as well). POP is another story, because once downloaded it usually, though not always, is gone from the remote.

I don't see why you couldn't back up the entire WLM folder, which is probably in c:\users\<user name>\appdata\local....

In fact, when I do a reinstall, I always do a file back up of most of the appdata folder. It invariably comes in very handy.

Another way for an independent mail backup, POP or IMAP, is to use MailStore, which is free for private use.

Hi, everybody
Prompt please, MS SQL 2012 on the virtual computer. Backup of all section with bases every day, at 19.00. That is, for every day I have the file copy .MDF and .LDF. Is there a way to recover the database at a certain time? Not 7 hours, but for example at 12.00. If I just attach the base then at the start I get an error about the lack of backup. Because backup wasn't carried out by means of Ms SQL though at start of procedure of restoration it is possible to choose a timeline. Thanks for the help)

Answer:Solved: Restore MSSQL 2012 on some point. (Not backup)

If you have a file backup from 12pm, then I don't know why you can't restore that backup. Maybe the exact error message and process info would help.

Harmlessly browsing the internet last night my computer came down with an infection in the form of a fake antivirus program calling itself "Vista Internet Security 2012". From browsing some recent threads it seems to have been rampantly infecting computers for the last month or so. From what I have read, the prospects of completely purging this thing from my computer permanantely are questionable at best.

Answer:Vista Antivirus 2012 - Backup data before formatting OS?

Hello, Only back up your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml ) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executables inside them as some types of malware can penetrate compressed files and infect the .exe files within them. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by hiding a file extension or adding to the existing extension as shown here (click Figure 1 to enlarge) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. If you cannot see the file extension, you may need to reconfigure Windows to show file name extensions. Then make sure you scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive. If your CD/DVD drive is unusable, another word of caution if you are considering backing up to an external usb hard drive as your only alternative. External drives are more susceptible to infection and can become compromised in the process of backing up data. I'm not saying you should not try using such devices but I want to make you aware of all your options and associated risks so you can make an informed decision if its worth that risk. How and Where to backup your files in XP or VistaHow to Backup and R... Okay I want to go over pros and cons of some of the things that my boss wants done.

First off let me explain what we have. Users are on a domain system. Both laptop and desktop users. No users have admin rights.

Now let me explain what we want to do. We want a backup of their My Documents (and possibly other directories in the future) but we want it to be as invisible to them as possible.

I looked into the Folder redirection GPO and has a good pro - Simple to impelment (I did a test on my own PC did it in about 5 minutes) cons - in order to allow laptops to work they would have to have offline folders enabled and synchrnized and worst of all synchrnization won't accept PST's, MDB's and other key files that we would need synchronized as well gives errors in the synching process.

I then thought about a file sync program letting them seemlessly work on their PCs and just sync the files to the file server - Pros Can install a server side client that just polls for connected PC's and copies the files to the repsective places. Cons costs money, usually does not sync in use files making some of the files be missed.

Lastly I considered a batch file to run at login - Pros easier to setup to copy things out. Cons only runs at login so people could leave their PC up for 15 days and have 15 day old software. As well I do not know how to copy only modified files so some people with large files would copy over a ton of data (unless I can find a solution for this).

Hi there,

Long time lurker. Recently acquired a copy of Server 2012 but I'm unsure what exactly I should be doing with it. NOW I REALIZE THAT SOUNDS CRAZY FROM SOMEONE WHO LURKS ON [H]...but I've never had a need for a server OS in the past.

My home currently consists of a WHS2011 machine, a desktop running W7Pro, wife's laptop on W7HP, and my MacBook Air, as well as a few iOS devices around the house. The WHS stores all my media (approx 11TB worth) as well as handle computer backups of the Windows machines.

I've been debating, and looking, at Synology NAS systems for easy media streaming (i.e. Plex) as well as having an FTP option and iTunes server. Not sure if this is a machine that will really provide me any significant improvement so I've yet to pull the trigger on a NAS.

So, anyone willing to provide some suggestions on what might be my best use for my copy of Server2012? I have an old box lying around with a Q6600(?) and 8GB RAM doing nothing right and I'm hoping that would be a sufficient box to run Server2012 should I find a use for it.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc would be appreciated!

Answer:What to do with my copy of Server 2012?

In all honesty Server 2012 is an overpowered over complicated piece of software for home usage. Unless you want MS cert.

I set up server 2012 this weekend and I'd like to add the VPN role so I can get to my home network from work. I use a pci Intel nic in it for the internal network. Would it be better to use the onboard nic for the vpn and a second ip address? Or does it matter since I have to use port forwarding on my router?

Answer:VPN access w/ server 2012

I would say a single NIC and then let your router handle everything else, unless the server is doing some intense throughput that you need the second NIC for.

I'm looking for a detailed Server 2012 comparison, and I haven't been able to find one.

Specifically, I want to know what versions fully support the following:

Client Backup with Bare Metal Restore
Single Instance Store for the backups
Ability to install non-domain (Essentials = a big no on this one )

They still haven't fully settled down yet. Just today, they announced some different version of 2012 Essentials BETA in response to all the criticism they received last week about no bottom end box replacement for the final products aren't cast in stone yet.

Question should probably hold off and be asked again in October...

That means the final code is complete and we are delivering it to our hardware and software vendor partners this week. We will also make the software available to our volume licensing customers in the next couple of weeks.

Hello all,

I know this is a forum dedicated to Windows 8/8.1, however Im having some issues with Server 2012 R2. I know it is very similar to 8.1 so maybe someone here can help me or at least give me some good ideas. Im having a hard time finding solutions online. If someone knows of a better place or forum to go to for this, please let me know.

Anytime I download software to install on the server I get this error message:

It happens with just about any software I download, doesnt matter what it is. Also, when trying to download something in Firefox, a lot of times it will tell me that the download failed almost immediately. The account Im using is a member of the administrators group. Ive tried restarting, running as administrator, etc. The only thing that seems to work is shift+right click -> run as a different user and running it as the built in admin account. Then most of the time it will allow me to install software or download software with Firefox.

Anyone have any ideas?

Something I forgot to add was if I do get it to download to my own user downloads folder, everytime something is downloaded the permissions are automatically set so I dont have permission to execute the file. This is what Im seeing in the security tab and permissions dialogs:

Hey All - I wrote 3 weeks ago about my Win 8 experience, so I thought I'd share my experience moving my two 2008 R2 test lab boxes to 2012 and my thoughts about this new OS.

First of all I always value the quality in the Server product line. Like any OS keep it simple stupid is the key to success. Don’t get me wrong, each has deficiencies, but you can usually bet the next OS will fill in the gaps.

My 2008 R2 lab was a 2 Standard hosts both with AD and DNS. I decided to take a different route than I could have – instead of transferring the roles, reinstalling one with 2012, transferring the roles back, and then installing the second 2012, I decided to bring up a fresh 2012 VM (in ESX), give it the roles, and then install both 2012’s at the same time.

The Modern UI works as well as it does on 8 – it’s better initially because they don’t clutter the screen with apps. Like I said in my Win 8 experience thread, the simpler the initial Modern UI screen is the more manageable the interface is. Try to use “All Apps” on 8/2012 – it can be a cluster fuck.

True Failover DHCP servers is a nice perk. How many times have you seen 2 servers with split scopes and half of the scopes excluded? Yep, no more of that craziness. I tested this in a lab scenario as well. I had a Win 8 client with an IP assigned from Server1, so I took 1 offline, refreshed the client IP and Server2 showed the IP assignment instead. How many times will DHCP go offline and then a client happen to go ... Read more

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

That's actually not the case. This aspect hasn't changed between 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

You want to talk this two different ways:
1. If you want icons to appear on the desktop, you can place them on the all users desktop.
2. You'll want to create a default profile so when new users log into the machine, they receive the profile that you created for them.

Anybody know of a good, hopefully free, AV that works on Server 2012?

Answer:AV for Windows Server 2012?

Most of the free av doesn't run on server. As far as paid av for the most part you generally need to use the business version of the software which also generally starts in 5 packs.

To my knowledge ms fixed it so you can't run mse on 2012 as it would install on 08.

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.

in the virtual machine setting I have both network adpters set on bridged: connected directly to the physical network.
when I open the dhcp on my server I have a red arrow pointing down on the ipv4 and ipv6 option but since I cannot ping my server at all I dont think its my dhcp but my vmware network.

Hi, some time ago I deployed two servers for a small RDS environment.  They are both physical servers, session-based RDS.
I want to now get USB Redirection to work on them to enable the use of WebCams.  Looking through all the literature and articles, I get the impression that I need Hyper-V installed.  Is this true?  Was my initial deployment setup incorrect
or can I just add the Hyper-V feature now?   I am worried if I install that role that it will change the architecture of my setup.
Can someone please advise.

Hi, I?m having a hellish time with Win7 clients and Server 2012 RDS (and PCI!!)
I have disabled TLS 1.0 on the server;
Win10/8.1 connect (I?m guessing these don't even try TLS 1.0)
Win7 RDP is latest (v8), I have tried KB3140245 but really unsure what a ?DWORD Bitmap? is ?!? i first thought 32-bit DWORD but it doesn?t seem to want to take the value given, either 0x00000A00 or 0x00000200 ? so that I think is my first hurdle?
Do I need to run KB3140245/Reg keys on both Win7 and Server 2012? (that was a little unclear)
I don?t want to make too many changes to the Server 2012, as I need to revert back etc. so the client can work etc. (busy company with little offline time)

Hey everyone,

I am trying to write some scripts to change the zone transfer and notify servers for around 1000 internal zones but the Microsoft technet articles on these commands are lacking a lot on the syntax.

I was hoping that someone could point out how to do the spacing on the IP addresses in these commands so on each zone the zone transfer and notify servers are updated

Set-DnsServerPrimaryZone -Name “” –Notify Notifyservers –notifyservers “" -SecondaryServers “,,,,,”

I have tried spaces, spaces with commas, and commas directly with no results.

This is the article that I am referencing

I've been looking at these little tiny computers, and considering using one for a DNS, DHCP, and AD DC computer running Server 2012 R2. I might want to run other things on it too, as I go along.

What I'm reading though, in reviews, is that they aren't particularly reliable, and some seem to die. Are there any that do better than others that you would recommend for such a purpose? Any particular processor that is better?

Here at work we just spun up a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard machine.
We are trying to install an application and for some reason when we double click the exe nothing happens at all on the screen.

We go to the even viewer and an event_id = 1000 is captured.

At first we tried to install an app made by CA, so we thought it was due to the version not being compatible, as the exe opens in 2008.

Today we attempted to install a different program all together and same exact thing is happening.

The CA tool is packaged using InstallAnywhere
This next exe is packaged using InstallJammer

Is there anything within the Server 2012 OS that could prevent these from launching? Or a workaround?

I've tried to run as Amin, run in compatibility mode, and not success.

This is what i'm getting for both in the event viewer:
Exception Code: 0xc0000005
EventID: 1000
Application Error

At this point now idea what to do

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Question: Server 2012 Bsod

Our Windows Server 2012 is crashing, and our hosting company is telling us it's software and the OS needs to be reloaded. Which I think is bogus, I suspect it either may be a hard drive or a RAID controller. Any insights anyone has would be appreciated. Dump is attached. Thanks.

Answer:Server 2012 Bsod

It's probably a driver/filter but continue your quest as suggested elsewhere, they're much more experienced with Server issues.

so I configured my home server to run Server 2012, I had a few questions before I get to far down this road.

if I set up my home to use AD and my server takes a dump, how hard will it be to access the files and what not, will it just be a matter of starting up a server trial vm in my copy of workstation on my desk top and attaching the storage and taking ownership? or would it be even easier then that.

or might I totaly lock my self out of my own data? I am really new to using AD.

secondly I wanted to know if I could run a hyper-v VM of pfsense on my server? maybe vmware player would be better?

it is a supermicro atom d510 with 4gb ram, pfsense will only be used for 4-8 devices and the server has dual intel nics? I am running storage spaces so there is some cpu overhead, but I figure a 32 bit copy of pfsense should hardly effect my overhead... ( vm will be stored on a mostly dedicated drive not in any storage pool)

Thanks for any info.

Answer:server 2012, AD, and Hyper-V

You want to have 2 ADs, they don't take up much RAM or HD space, like 15GB HD and 1GB RAM is enough and since they need to be the DNS server even with cached credentials that would work just fine with the AD down you'd have to access all your servers by IP which can be a pain, stick one on your server and one on your desktop.

Hi, I would like to connect my Server 2012 machine to a new, second network which will only be used for local file sharing with no internet access passing through this second network. My main network is 192.168.1.x/ The second network will run on a second NIC on the machine with IP

This second network is really just one other Windows Server 2012 machine which also has two NIC's; setup the same as above, but with .1.2 and .2.2 and same masks.

The .1.x network works fine, and I can ping between the two machines in the .2.x network. However, file sharing does not work. I think it is because Windows detects this network as Public and Unidentified.

Can someone help me with a solution to this?

The reason why I am doing this is because the NIC's in the .2.x network are infiniband cards that I would like to utilize for a high speed connection between the two machines for backup purposes.

Much appreciated!

Answer:Second network on same Server 2012

Are the 2012 servers joined to domains?

Hello, I'm looking for some suggestions. I have a Windows Server 2003 File Server which employees use to store data, as of right now everything is being backed up on tape (Every night). I would like to eliminate the tape and backup on to another Windows 2003 machine(everynight), i would also like the restore process (if a file goes missing ..etc) to be somewhat easy if possible. As well the fileserver holds around 500 GB, would that be too much to transfer each night? would i have to compress it?

Answer:Windows Server 2003 File Server - Backup

If you have another server, you can do weekly full backups of the 500gb (maybe on a Sunday?) and then each night back up anything thats changed during the day.
Do you have Shadow Copies enabled? that lets users restore files without having you look through the backups
I had a setup like you want, setup at one customer that didnt want to spring for a tape drive, it worked fine for him and he didnt have any problems. I did make sure to have him put the server being backed up to in the safest location in the building in case of a fire or something. We used KReplicator from karenware, it keeps 2 locations in sync and is easy to setup.

First off, I am not sure this is the right forum. If it's wrong, please move.

I have an Intel BOXDP35DPM that I am trying to put the new RC 2012 Server on and Intel says that there is no support or official drivers for server 2003/2008.

I wanted to try out the RC and the Win7/Vista 64 bit drivers won't work either.

Can anyone help me find a third party that would have made drivers for the prev 2 Server editions that I might try on 2012?

Answer:Intel Board Server 2012 DC

I doubt 2003 drivers would work on 2012
Cant you just find the devices on the board and get the INtel ones for those devices (ie ProLAN, chipset, MEI/SOL/TPM, etc)

So I am aware that a single Server 2012 license is good for a single physical install or two VM installations. What I'm curious about though is the combinations and how they identify themselves as virtual or physical.

Scenario 1: If I use License A for a physical install, can I then use that license to run two more VMs using Hyper-V installed on License A's physical install or can I use it ONLY for the physical install?

Scenario 2: If I use License A for a physical install, then install two VMs using License B, how does License B operating systems know they are virtual allowing the use of the key twice and can License B be used for two VMs running concurrently?

Scenario 3: If I choose to use a "third party" VM software provider such as VMware's ESXi, will the operating systems properly identify themselves still as being virtual installations and allow two VMs to run, if running two concurrently is possible?
I am currently planning a complete overhaul of a small network that has a single DC, exchange server, and file server hosting roughly 30 concurrent users. The current DC and exchange server are dual core machines that are overtaxed and eating into the page file for normal usage operations. The file server is a monster 12-core, 64GB RAM behemoth with 6 NICs that is doing nothing but file services for the local site. I am wanting to use VMs to utilize those resources but need to understand the VM licensing properly.

Answer:Server 2012 VM License Usage

A lot of this depends on the version of Server you have. It sounds like you have standard so...

Scenario 1: You can only use it for the physical install.

Scenario 2: They don't know they are virtual, it's an honor system (for the most part).

Scenario 3: See Scenario 2.

Typically the most cost effective licensing scheme is buying Datacenter edition. This lets you run unlimited instances of Windows on each host.

So for example, you have three physical hosts, but want to have 120 VM's (running windows server). You would buy three datacenter editions and you're covered.

Activation isn't nearly as smart as you're making it out. It's for the most part an honor system, of course, if you get audited you better be in compliance.

Good day

I recently started at a company where i assist in small IT related tasks.

Recently we have started to experience some trouble with our server, we will all still be working perfectly fine (via Remote Desktop) then all of a sudden we lose our connection to the server and when i go to see what the problem is, I see the blue screen
of death on the screen with the following message:
"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you.
If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (TSFairShare.sys)"
If anyone can please assist me in what this means and how to resolve it i would appreciate it seeing as i don't have
a clue in connection to servers.

So, does anyone know how to get them? I have heard that they are a standalone Operating System then installs on the Hard Drive and run like an OS.

Please also provide a link to Download it and the installation guide.

Thank You................

Heya so I installed hyper-V on my other computer because I wanted to get a program to work on it (googled how to get my Reason to work on windows 8). Since I couldn't find the suggested setting to just turn some hyper-V settings on I thought I dont have it on my computer. After installing Hyper-V though my computer went server mode and I have no experience of that. Now I want to remove it from my comp but dont know how and googling doesn't help :S I dont mind formatting the computer, nothing too important there and after the uninstallation of Hyper-V I will install xp on it too. Didn't like W8 tbh.

Thanks in advance!

I'll have around 10-15 computers plus some media players connecting to it. server hardware isn't a problem as I have that.

Thanks in advance

PS it will be running under Windows Hyper-V Server or ESXi most likely. May have it run on the bare metal instead and use the Hyper-V Role. Not sure yet on that one.

Answer:which version of Windows Server 2012 will I need?

The cheapo ones don't have computer limits but user limits of 15 and 25 but do NOT have the hyper-v role. Essentials supports 1 socket only.

One of the office computers I have running windows 10 Pro stopped connecting to 1 of our 2012Server using remote desktop connection (RDP). It will connect or other 2012 servers at different locations using different IP Addresses I have disabled the Firewall, Turned off Antivirus, and yes, I have rebooted the PC. Also the User account and password do work if I login to the Remote Server from another PC in the Same office, So it is a Problem with the Win10 PC. I Changed the Network group from Public to Private, still no go. It acts like it just wont connect just that one remote IP server address, all the other remote server I try to connect to work just fine. Is there a file that needed to be Updated, or cache that needs flushed? This happened after the w10 update, but again I dont want to remove all updates, as this connection problem is only giving me trouble on 1 server connection.
